Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles.
- 0:22We're a couple of friends review Korean dramas and we are back
- 0:24for a throwback review of the K drama Queen and Hyun's Man AKA
- 0:30Queen and I because it has two different names.
- 0:33But for this episode, I am so excited to welcome back Grace
- 0:37and Sarah from the Afternoon Asks podcast.
- 0:39How are you guys doing? Good.
- 0:41Thank you. Good to be back.
- 0:42Thank you for having us. I'm really thrilled that you
- 0:46guys chose this drama. I was afraid it would be like
- 0:48the red headed step sister and wouldn't get picked.
- 0:50Nobody would want to touch this drama and do it this season, but
- 0:54because I would have just like not cover it, that I just
- 0:57wouldn't have covered it. But you guys were so thrilled
- 1:01that this was on the docket and you guys both were like, please
- 1:05let us review this one. And I can't wait to share this
- 1:09experience with you guys and chat it over.
- 1:11I rewatched the show and I think you guys watched it for the
- 1:15first time. And I know that we're all full
- 1:18of thoughts. At this moment in time.
- 1:22Before we get started, what have you guys been watching?
- 1:24Maybe just give me one thing that you want to recommend to
- 1:26people that you have been watching lately.
- 1:30Okay, I can go first. I literally just wrapped Idle
- 1:32Eye, which is a 12 episode law mystery romance drama starring
- 1:40Sue Young from Girls' Generation to Chess Young and the male
- 1:44leaders Kim Jong. And he plays an idol very
- 1:47believably and she plays a secret fangirl.
- 1:50So it's a bit her private life like in her, in her day life,
- 1:54she's like this lawyer. She's kick ass and she's really
- 1:56steely and keeps her emotions in check.
- 1:59And then she gets home and she gets into furry slippers.
- 2:01And then we see her room and it's like an idol like room of
- 2:06Kim Jales, pictures of him in his group called Gold Boys.
- 2:10He gets accused of murder and she becomes his lawyers, as one
- 2:14does, and she becomes his lawyer.
- 2:16And actually, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this
- 2:19drummer is. I think anybody who loves K Pop
- 2:23will find it interesting because does touch on topics around
- 2:26mental health around idols not being able to be themselves up
- 2:29from obsessive fans like the sangs and the impact they have
- 2:33on idols and people breaking into their apartment and and
- 2:37controlling CEOs and all of those kind of themes.
- 2:40There are some legals about how it handles that towards the end,
- 2:43but overall it's it's good. The two of them have great
- 2:46chemistry. The mystery's pretty well done.
- 2:49So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed
- 2:52this drama. It was good.
- 2:54Very nice. Yeah, it's on my list of watches
- 2:57to finish for 2026 already. There's a list going.
- 3:01Yes, all right, because you're slow like me, right you're.
- 3:04Yes, we're some how to go in that we're we have no rush.
- 3:07We're on our own timetable and we'll get to it when we get to
- 3:10it, right? Grace?
- 3:12Grace, what have you been watching lately?
- 3:14So the only drama I've watched so far this year is Residents
- 3:19Playbook. I was playing catch up from last
- 3:22year. I was meant to get back to it
- 3:24and I really enjoyed it actually.
- 3:26I actually had low expectations because people didn't seem to
- 3:31like it as much as, you know, Hospital Playlist or Prison
- 3:35Playbook or, you know, the reply series.
- 3:38But you know, it was good. I had fun at the movies.
- 3:41I mean, wait. It's not the movies, but it's
- 3:45like a thing. I had fun watching it.
- 3:47I'd love to hear it, All right, Resident play, resident playbook
- 3:51or residence playbook. Resident Playbook.
- 3:54OK, singular. Yeah, singular, even though it's
- 3:57a ensemble, there's four residents, so in any.
- 4:01Event. I like it.
- 4:02Yeah, I like it, yeah. Yeah, that director and writer
- 4:05duo, I believe work together on all of those famous slice of
- 4:10life series like The Reply Series and The Prison Playbook
- 4:13and all of the hospital playlists.
- 4:16They're not strictly 1 and 2, so they're close as the like
- 4:19originators or creators, but they're not the people that
- 4:22actually wrote. OK.
- 4:23And I think you can talk. OK, so they kind of spielberged
- 4:26it. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 4:27Just not as quite as, because they are pretty amazing at what
- 4:32they do. And I think you can tell that
- 4:34it's just not quite that. I think it's still fun.
- 4:39It's still fun. But I mean, they're just such
- 4:42like, for me anyway, the hospital playlist, prison
- 4:44Playbook, the reply series is like it's top tier and this is
- 4:48really good. It's just not top tier.
- 4:50It's just that different for me anyway.
- 4:52Did you know that it wasn't them going into watching it or did
- 4:56you look that up later? I.
- 4:57Looked it up like a 3rd of the way through when I was like I'm
- 5:01not really. Feeling this?
- 5:04And then you looked into the hood.
- 5:05Yes. Yeah.
- 5:06Yeah, well, I feel like my expectations were sufficiently
- 5:10lowered that I didn't feel any. Like I was just like, OK, no, I.
- 5:16Always enjoy this. Yeah, you're meant, I see.
- 5:19Yeah. Because I had heard, you know,
- 5:22it was. It was.
- 5:22Fine, it was. It was good, not as good.
- 5:26And so like, I was like, OK, don't expect too much.
- 5:28And so I went in there thinking, oh, it's, you know, just going
- 5:32to be OK. And then so I totally enjoyed
- 5:34it, Yeah. All right, well, two wrecks from
- 5:39Sarah and Grace. We have Idle Eye and Resident
- 5:42Playbook if you guys want to give those a watch.
- 5:46Resident Playbook is on Netflix. Idle Idle Eye is also on Netflix
- 5:50and on Vicki. OK, OK, great.

- 6:47All right, so let's get started on this Queen and I Queen and
- 6:50Hensman review. We'll do non spoiler and spoiler
- 6:54section. I'll kick us off with the
- 6:55synopsis which reads. Kim Pundu is a scholar who had
- 7:00supported the reinstatement of Queen and Hyun when Tang Yi
- 7:03Bin's schemes resulted in the Queen being deposed and replaced
- 7:06as Queen Concert. He travels 300 years into the
- 7:10future of modern soul and meets Tit Hee Jin, a no name actress
- 7:14who is expecting a career renaissance through her role as
- 7:17Queen and Hyun in ATV drama. That is the My Drama List
- 7:20synopsis, which I feel like we need to go a little more high
- 7:23level because this is an older drama and I feel like that was a
- 7:27little bit much, the Wikipedia synopsis reads.
- 7:30The story centers around obscure.
- 7:32Actress. Change and in her first leading
- 7:35role, who falls in love with Kimbondo, a time travelling
- 7:38scholar from the Tolson period, 1392 to 1910.
- 7:42That's the entirety. Of the Tolson period.
- 7:45He jumps 300 years into the future to the 21st century.
- 7:49This drama, as I said at the top, aired in 2012 from April to
- 7:52June 2012. Let's go back to the year 2012.
- 7:56Instagram was only two years old, and this was the year that
- 8:00Android users finally got it. It was available in for them to
- 8:05download finally, because it was only an Apple user app.
- 8:09The top five highest grossing movies of the year, according to
- 8:12Box Office Mojo is #1 The Avengers.
- 8:16Of course The Avengers the first one #2 is The Dark Knight rises,
- 8:21then The Hunger Games, the first Hunger Games movie, then Skyfall
- 8:27which is arguably the best Daniel Craig James Bond movie,
- 8:31then Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2.
- 8:33I don't know if you guys were in the theatre for any of these
- 8:36movies, but I vividly remember being in the theatre for all of
- 8:40these movies and watching Breaking Dawn Part 2 after being
- 8:45a Twilight book fan for so long and growing up with that series.
- 8:50Oh my God, I've never seen such electrifying third act in my
- 8:55life because of the change that they made.
- 8:57Do you guys remember this? I I did read Twilight.
- 9:01I got very annoyed by Breaking Dawn so I didn't check out the I
- 9:06watched that's fine the 1st 2 movies and then I checked out.
- 9:09OK, OK. No, I was like a 12 year old
- 9:12when the first book came out and so I was in over my head.
- 9:17I was deep into this. I was following all the forums
- 9:20when they had started casting people and I remember Stephanie
- 9:25Meyer's website and how she had a fan casting of.
- 9:28People that she had. It actors that she had in her
- 9:31head as she was writing the books.
- 9:35Everyone was like, Henry Cavill's going to be, he's going
- 9:38to be Edward Henry Cavill. Anyway, I was there on the
- 9:42ground floor of that and Breaking Dawn Part 2 seared into
- 9:45my memory. If you know, you know, 2012 is
- 9:48the year Whitney Houston and Donna Summer died.
- 9:50I was like, oh damn, that feels like yesterday.
- 9:53Hits like Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me, Maybe we're on the
- 9:56radio. Oh my gosh.
- 9:57Call Me Maybe? Gautier, somebody that I used to
- 10:00know, funds We are young and size.
- 10:03Gangnam Style was the first video to reach 1 billion views
- 10:07on YouTube in this year. I mean, it was a year.
- 10:11It was. A year we had London 2012
- 10:13Olympics. Yes, yes, the Olympics, which I
- 10:17remember vividly watching the opening ceremonies and the Spice
- 10:19Girls coming out. Listen, this was the era.
- 10:24This was the time for this drama to drop.
- 10:28It is 16 episodes long and directed by Kim Pyeong SU.
- 10:33He's directed since the mid 2000s vampire prosecutor.
- 10:38He's in other time travel like 9 times time travel, which is the
- 10:45it's breaking my brain just to say it.
- 10:49I don't know if you guys have had to say that show but say
- 10:52that three times fast. He's also directed 3 Musketeers
- 10:55Bubble Gum, The Bride of Habeck, which I have to credit for the
- 10:58entirety of Tabak at all because I started the Tabak Review blog
- 11:05because I was. So.
- 11:06Pissed after watching The Bride of Habeck in 2017 that I had to
- 11:11create a whole blog just a bitch about that show because I was so
- 11:15mad I was like this. Is the worst show.
- 11:17How can they let this air? So Bride of Habeck, he directed
- 11:21a Korean odyssey. He's directed, which is a Hong
- 11:24Sisters drama. That one also controversial.
- 11:28They got beat to death with plagiarism allegations because
- 11:32it's not a Korean odyssey, it's based on the Chinese folklore.
- 11:36And I mean, what a time he is psychometric and Rookie Cops was
- 11:41the last thing that he did. Have you seen this director's
- 11:45work before? No.
- 11:46From that list, no. OK.
- 11:48Yeah, me neither. None of them.
- 11:51OK Queen and Hyun's Man was written by two screenwriters.
- 11:55Song Jae Chong is the first one listed and she has been writing
- 12:01since the 90s. Like 1998 was the first credit
- 12:04that I see here. She has worked with this
- 12:07director a couple of times, including The Three Musketeers
- 12:11and Nine times Time travel. I have to say that slow so I
- 12:15don't stumble over it, but. It's a tongue twister.
- 12:19It's a tongue twister. This writer has also written W2
- 12:24Worlds Apart, which we've covered on the podcast.
- 12:27And then Memories of the Alhambra, which is such a cool
- 12:30premise. I remember watching that first
- 12:32episode Lego was yesterday and being like, this is amazing.
- 12:35It blew me away the way that show ends it.
- 12:37I don't want to talk about it but like it was very it went the
- 12:40way of bride of Habeck. She also wrote Yumi Cells all of
- 12:45the seasons of Yumi Cells. The Co writer is Kim Yunju.
- 12:49They have written Yumi Cells most recently and they worked
- 12:53with the director and the Co writer before on 9 times time
- 12:59travel. Well done.
- 13:03You do good. Have you?
- 13:04Have you seen any of these works from these writers before?
- 13:08For me, just you myself, but I mean that alone is I love you
- 13:11myself and I'm very much looking forward to Season 3.
- 13:14Awesome. Yes, same, same.
- 13:17Although I did watch the first episode of Memories of the
- 13:20Alhambra and I was like, this hurts my head a little bit,
- 13:24maybe I'll get back to it. And then I never got back to it.
- 13:27It's gonna give you a headache by the end.
- 13:29If the first episode was, I was. Like this is a little too
- 13:32complicated right now and too many things are happening and
- 13:36I'm not in the mood and I just never got.
- 13:38Back to it I. Don't.
- 13:42All I can say is you're not going to be happy.
- 13:44If you continue. Watching that and the mental
- 13:47gymnastics that that one made you do, yeah.
- 13:51Anyway, human looks hot in that, so there's that.
- 13:54Yes. Queen Indians Man stars D Hyunu.
- 13:58He plays Kim Pong Du. He's the male lead and this was
- 14:02the last drama before his military enlistment.
- 14:05He has done 7 movies and 22 TV shows.
- 14:08He's been acting for like 20 years.
- 14:11I have seen him in becoming a billionaire and that's it.
- 14:16I definitely wanted a press play on first lady, which came out
- 14:19last year. That was the one where a
- 14:21politician gets elected to I think be president and he serves
- 14:25his wife divorce papers on the day that he wins the election.
- 14:30And I was like, this sounds like mock drunk heaven.
- 14:32I can't wait to press play on this and I never did.
- 14:33He is the guy that serves his wife divorce papers.
- 14:36I believe he has. If you look through his
- 14:39filmography, he does a lot of those long family dramas and 50
- 14:45plus episode dramas, 40 episodes here and there.
- 14:48And that's his bag. But he has been working
- 14:51consistently for the past 20 years.
- 14:54Have you seen this guy before? Me no.
- 14:57Me neither. And I was like, I was like, oh
- 15:00wow, he must have been one of those people who like was hot,
- 15:03you know, 15 years ago and then just like dropped off.
- 15:05And then I looked at his filmography and I was like, Oh
- 15:07my gosh, he's working. He's working consistently.
- 15:11And I just missed all of this. But now that I know that some of
- 15:14these things are the 50 episode plus kind of family things, I'm
- 15:19like a little bit more interested because it's been a
- 15:21while since I've watched one of those and I have that itch.
- 15:24So I may I may get into one of these afterwards.
- 15:28Yeah, the ones on this list that I have italicized and put a star
- 15:32in front of are I looked up each one of the dramas that he's in
- 15:36and I was like, oh, I totally want to press play on these.
- 15:40So those are the ones that I'm like, this sounds pretty good.
- 15:43Young Lady and a Gentleman is the most recent one that I
- 15:47after. First lady, of course, from last
- 15:49year, 2025, that I would like to watch.
- 15:51Young lady and a gentleman. Bad thief, Good thief, looks
- 15:54good. Wanted from 2016.
- 15:57A Thousand Kisses, which is I think a Nuna romance.
- 16:00Those ones, they got a little something.
- 16:03There's some sauce in there that I'd like to check out.
- 16:06So this is our first time seeing.
- 16:10Yeah, he's just not a traffic star anymore.
- 16:12Yeah. And he's older.
- 16:14Yeah, but he's, I thought he was quite attractive in this drama.
- 16:18So I was like how have I not? Seen him in anything else?
- 16:23I'm so glad you said something because I was like am I going
- 16:26crazy? But like, he's still seducing me
- 16:28all these years later. It is quite a seductive
- 16:33character he's. A great male lead role.
- 16:38Yes I think actors these days would kill for a role like this.
- 16:43Like period. It's so like juicy.
- 16:46His Co star is UE Na and she plays Tahi Jin.
- 16:49She's a female lead and she is a lot more recognizable I think
- 16:54then he is, at least by today's international audience
- 16:57standards. She's done 5 movies, 18 TV
- 17:00shows. We've covered a lot of her
- 17:02dramas on the Tabakvi. There's reviews up for Snowdrop,
- 17:05she's in Snowdrop, She's in of course, Guardian, the Lonely and
- 17:09Great God AKA Goblin from 2016. We also covered My Love From the
- 17:14Star, which is a hysterical rewatch.
- 17:16If you want to go back and listen to that review, all of
- 17:20these are up. She's also been in You Are the
- 17:23Best, which I remember that show, watching that show and I
- 17:26also remember dropping that show.
- 17:29Yeah, I dropped that show too. It was so.
- 17:30Long. It was so long.
- 17:33And the mothers, The mothers were the worst, the worst, the
- 17:38worst mothers ever. Oh my.
- 17:40God I was like I'm over it. I can't I can't do this.
- 17:43I know you are the best. I also dropped the greatest
- 17:46love. She's in that show and don't ask
- 17:48me why. I literally just didn't, I don't
- 17:51know. I didn't vibe with it so I
- 17:52dropped it. But I see the greatest love on a
- 17:55lot of best of lists, even to this day.
- 17:58And I'm like. God.
- 18:00Did I tap out too early? I don't know.
- 18:03I don't know. I've also watched Secret Garden.
- 18:06She's in Secret Garden. Have you guys seen that classic
- 18:082010? Yeah, popping up again.
- 18:13Being a little a little toxic. Yeah, I remember, I remember
- 18:16every time I see Secret Garden comments, it's always, it's
- 18:19always kind of commented afterwards that like it's of its
- 18:23time. It was.
- 18:25Yeah, it's totally, which is code for like, it's really quite
- 18:28toxic right now. But we watched it because that
- 18:31was just, you know, fine back then.
- 18:34So I never fancied and he didn't look great in that shell suit,
- 18:37so none did. I was looking.
- 18:39None of it made me want to like, check it out, you know me.
- 18:42And like older dramas. I don't.
- 18:44I mean, this is like like my oldest drama I've watched in a
- 18:47really long time. Oh my God, You know, I'm just
- 18:50going to cover these two actors and there's really not much else
- 18:54in the way of a cast. There's really four people
- 18:57listed and as main cast members and we covered two of them.
- 19:02It's the male lead and the female lead.
- 19:03I think that's all we need to. Do I love I love you?
- 19:06In our so we also we covered Touch Your Heart as a deep dive
- 19:09on our part. And I actually also really
- 19:11enjoyed her. And so her last drama that she
- 19:14LED in was True to Love, which was a bit patchy, but it also
- 19:17has one of the most realistic portrayals of a breakup.
- 19:21Yeah. And she's amazing.
- 19:23Like she's so she's so good at the comedy, so, so good at the
- 19:27comedy, but also she's really great at the angst.
- 19:30And I think that, you know, like her best roles are the ones
- 19:32which showcase both of those. If she's not crying in a drama,
- 19:35I'm like, that was wasted guys, you know you.
- 19:40You need to Yeah, crying. Yeah.
- 19:43I yeah, I didn't watch True to Love from 2023, but I'm glad you
- 19:46could comment on it and of course, touch your heart, which
- 19:49I don't like office romances and I'm not the biggest fan of Eden
- 19:54Wook. I respect the man, I appreciate
- 19:56the man, but I'm never seeking out Eden Wook.
- 19:59Dramas. He's good.
- 20:00Well, this is like dorky dork. And I like dorky.
- 20:03We haven't had dorky for a while, so there's there's no
- 20:07blood. There's no I'm really cool.
- 20:11He's very dorky. He's very dorky, but adorably
- 20:14dorky. Yeah.
- 20:15So I've kind of like bobbed and weaved out of the way of touch
- 20:19Your heart for many years now because it's that's from 2019
- 20:23again. I have gone through all of her
- 20:25dramas. I'm like, what am I missing?
- 20:26And the ones that I have italicized and starred, I'm
- 20:30like, wait a minute, I think I need to watch this.
- 20:32So the Spies Who Loved Me looked pretty good and the Secret Hotel
- 20:37from 2014 looked pretty good to me.
- 20:39But I'm glad that you guys are fans of you.
- 20:41And I think the last time we covered her, I vaguely remember
- 20:46saying put some respect on her name because most people don't
- 20:50know trafficked and amazing she was, especially now, like in the
- 20:5520 tens era. Yeah.
- 20:57You mentioned that this is the oldest drama that you've seen in
- 21:01a while. So talk to me about the
- 21:03experience of watching Queen and Young's Man.
- 21:07Did you like it? We'll start there with you,
- 21:09Sarah. OK, cool.
- 21:10So. I partly I find it's the
- 21:13production values that kind of bring me out.
- 21:15I'm one of these people. Like conversely, I can be really
- 21:18wowed by dramas that look really good and edited really well and
- 21:22I'm like 6 episodes in and then think this is actually not that
- 21:25good a drama, but I haven't really noticed because I'm
- 21:28sucked into it. So the opposite happens to me
- 21:30for older dramas, but with this one it's just so good from the
- 21:34get go, I think, and the pacing is really good.
- 21:38So I don't have a lot of time to be Oh my God, look at that
- 21:41outfit or Oh my God, like that clunky.
- 21:44They really like splitting the screen up in this drama to the
- 21:48point it kind of gave me a headache.
- 21:50But the, the director of photography or whoever's,
- 21:53whoever's responsible for deciding when the screen splits
- 21:58and how they split was having a very experimental and fun time
- 22:02with this drama. Like we had like really crazy
- 22:06shots from very weird angles, like aerial shots or people
- 22:10like, you know, coming from the other side of the door.
- 22:12And, you know, I was like, I kind of repeat.
- 22:14So my, my mind did wander a little bit, but not a lot.
- 22:17Most of the time I was in the drama in the story and with the
- 22:20leads. And so yeah, it I kind of got
- 22:23used to it after a while, yes. I will jum in and say the
- 22:27cinematography on this is interesting.
- 22:29I think at the time it was seen as really good.
- 22:32Yeah. Now it hasn't aged so well and
- 22:36the moving and sliding split screens is a choice and it's
- 22:41very comic booky in places. The last time that I saw this
- 22:45done in earnest serious as a heart attack was 2003's The
- 22:49Hulk. Have you seen that movie with
- 22:51Eric Bana? Yes they do that in that movie
- 22:53and it cracks me up. It is so funny to re watch that
- 22:58movie and be like, what are they doing?
- 23:00That's how it kind of felt to watch Queen and I and I have no
- 23:05recollection of them doing all of this stuff, you know, with
- 23:10the screens. But I thought it was endearing.
- 23:13At the end of the day. I was like this, you know, you
- 23:15don't get this everyday. It's it's fine.
- 23:18Yeah. Grace what?
- 23:20Did you think about Queen and I slash queen enhance man?
- 23:24OK, so. At first, the first episode, I
- 23:27was like, Oh my gosh, this feels so old.
- 23:29There's like this really dramatic music.
- 23:31There's like this news like a news anchor expositional
- 23:36voiceover at the very beginning, which is super duper old.
- 23:40And then like the vibe and cinematography really reminded
- 23:43me of some of the older dramas like Big or a cunning single
- 23:47Lady. But then that all fell away.
- 23:50Well, actually, I think actually they never did the news anchor
- 23:53exposition, you know, voice again the entire show.
- 23:58I feel like as they moved along, they like it felt a little bit
- 24:02more current and it wasn't just that I was drawn into the story
- 24:07and so I was ignoring the older stuff.
- 24:11So like really very quickly by the second episode, I thought,
- 24:17oh, this is this is a lot of fun and I like the story and it's
- 24:22funny and it's interesting and I I really enjoyed this drama.
- 24:28Like I really, really liked it basically all the way through.
- 24:31I thought the pacing was wonderful.
- 24:34I don't recall there being like a OK, there's this part's slow.
- 24:40They really could have, you know, dropped one or two
- 24:42episodes. I never felt that.
- 24:44So I really had a good time with this one.
- 24:47Yeah. One thing I thought was quite
- 24:49funny that struck me was whenever they shot what was
- 24:52their modern day soul, I just thought it was really funny
- 24:54because it's a modern, it's a time travel drama, right?
- 24:56So he time travels from Tristan to modern day soul.
- 24:59And then you have these shots of like what Saul looked like from
- 25:02Guam and Gate and you're like, Oh my God, it's so odd.
- 25:05Like that's what's so used to. So I just like this just.
- 25:09It's a. Position of like, this is meant
- 25:11to be a time travel drama, but where they time travel to looks
- 25:13like history for me. Like I'm like checking out like
- 25:17oh, that's what cars used to look like in 2020.
- 25:19I was like, oh, right. I.
- 25:23Totally understand. It's not contemporary enough,
- 25:26Yeah, To still pass muster for being, like, so impressive.
- 25:31You're like, like. It was so so.
- 25:32Different. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:36Yeah, look, I forget to love this show.
- 25:39And I knew that I loved it from jump, right?
- 25:42I loved it back when I first watched it around when it aired
- 25:47and coming back to it, I was so worried.
- 25:50You have no idea how worried I was.
- 25:51And I was going to like it. And then I made you guys watch a
- 25:53shitty show. Because I don't know like.
- 25:56I mean. 20. 12 I was a different person.
- 25:59I was going to see Twilight movies in earnest.
- 26:01I was like. I was different.
- 26:04Right, so. How can I?
- 26:06Expect that my taste in dramas is the same all 15 years that
- 26:11I've been watching dramas, so I was genuinely so worried.
- 26:16That this wasn't going to work out.
- 26:18And after episode 1, I was like, bitch, we are back.
- 26:22Like I love this show. It is so well paced.
- 26:25Like you both said, there's no slumps in this.
- 26:28It's just when you think they've gotten over a hurdle, another
- 26:31one appears. But you still get that
- 26:34satisfying bit of they're together, you know they're
- 26:38having good times, and then you know, a.
- 26:41Cute. So cute, So.
- 26:42Sweet the kissing amazing in this show.
- 26:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:47And it truly hit all the highs for me.
- 26:51It was playful, it was funny and mischievous.
- 26:55The leads acted so well. They had wonderful chemistry.
- 26:59And then also there were deeper moments in the show as well
- 27:03where they're dealing with the grief of like losing the other
- 27:07and coming back to each other as well.
- 27:10These emotions that run through the show are so well handled.
- 27:16I think it's those. Moments of deepness in the show
- 27:19as well as beautiful lightheartedness.
- 27:22They balance these tones incredibly well with a deft
- 27:25hand. And that's the lifeblood of the
- 27:27show. And I think that's the lifeblood
- 27:29of K dramas that I miss. When I, when I'm dropping K
- 27:34dramas, I'm like, they didn't, they didn't hit on it right?
- 27:36They didn't tap into that vein, but this one does.
- 27:41And it made me. Miss a well paced 16 episode K
- 27:45drama, you know what I'm saying? Like this thing is moving, yeah.
- 27:49It is totally. I think that's why.
- 27:50It's the test of time. I completely get your
- 27:52apprehension on how you might. And sometimes you think like,
- 27:57I'm not going to rewatch a drama.
- 27:58Just I feel like this way about gobbling.
- 28:00Actually, I feel like I never want to rewatch it because I
- 28:03want to stay with where I was and who I was when I watched
- 28:07that really early in my K drama career.
- 28:10And I kind of don't want to find it and then pick holes at it and
- 28:13then like lose my love for it. You want it to start setting
- 28:16ice. So I totally get your anxiety
- 28:19with, but I think this drama just completely holds up because
- 28:22of everything you just spoke about.
- 28:24And I contend if they did a remake of it now, it would still
- 28:27just work just as well because it's all the core elements.
- 28:32And you were saying it is a small cast because they really
- 28:36just center on that main couple. There's no extraneous like
- 28:41serial. There's like just some court
- 28:43stuff going on. But there's no serial kidding.
- 28:45There's no like amnesia plots. There's no terminal illness.
- 28:49It's like they're not relying on all this on external stuff.
- 28:52They're just like, but they've got this time travel thing.
- 28:55They do it really innovatively. They kept me guessing the whole
- 29:00way through, like how they were going to handle it.
- 29:02Because that's always the thing with time travel.
- 29:04It's like, how are you going to resolve it?
- 29:06Who, where are you going to end up?
- 29:08Like who's going to be in whose timeline?
- 29:10Are they even going to be in each other's timeline?
- 29:12And that's what keeps you guessing.
- 29:14And I think this drama did it so, so well.
- 29:17I agree. Grace, did you have anything to
- 29:19add before I go off on time travel stuff?
- 29:22No, no, I, I. Totally.
- 29:23I completely agree with both of you on that.
- 29:27Like, I think that we had an extended conversation, Sarah and
- 29:29I, and I think we had a guest when we did Touch Your Heart or
- 29:33it was our third host. But this was one of our big
- 29:38anxieties because we each remembered having really, really
- 29:41enjoyed Touch Your Heart. And then we were coming back to
- 29:44it like five years later and we were like, Oh my God, is it
- 29:47going to be bad now? And then we all loved it more
- 29:51the second OK. Perfect.
- 29:54Yeah, it's the best. Case in best Skype.
- 29:56Yeah, yeah. So totally get that.
- 29:59And I, I agree they they did such a good job with the show.
- 30:02So really, I mean, it feels timeless, yes.
- 30:07In a lot of ways, it feels timeless because the story is so
- 30:09well done, the writing is so tight, and one thing I'll talk
- 30:13about before we get into the time travel aspect of the show
- 30:15is that I've noticed people were talking on the phone so much.
- 30:20In the show like a. Lot of conversations between
- 30:22characters are not happening face to face or happening over
- 30:24the phone. And that's where you get all
- 30:26these crazy split screens from 50 different angles.
- 30:28And you're like, what? For what?
- 30:30But anyway, you can see how cheap it was to make this show.
- 30:35In a lot of ways, this show is a relic of the time in which K
- 30:39dramas were being written almost simultaneously as they were
- 30:42being aired. And it's a lot of the same sets,
- 30:45the same hospital room every time someone's been
- 30:47hospitalized. Like there's nothing expensive
- 30:50about these locations. They're not going to Canada.
- 30:52For instance, I know we brought up Goblin like they didn't go to
- 30:54Canada for this to shoot anything, right?
- 30:57This is. The time in K dramas.
- 30:59Where you really had to double down on your concept, on your
- 31:02characters and the writing. And that's what people are going
- 31:05to stick around for. It's not because it's flashy.
- 31:08It's not because the budget is super expensive and they've
- 31:12dumped all of the CGI in it and it looks incredible and it's all
- 31:16of this glitz and glamour. I said this before on the
- 31:18podcast. I'm really forgiving if the
- 31:21budget is lower because if the story is there, you're not going
- 31:24to notice. In the best case scenario, just
- 31:26like this show, you're not going to mind.
- 31:28Yeah. Totally we.
- 31:31Talked a little. Bit about the time travel.
- 31:34The time travel in this show is so tight and simple.
- 31:40That's not the case all the. Time for time travel shows.
- 31:43They really get into. The weeds on time travel.
- 31:45I've said this before as well. The best time travel is simple,
- 31:50Simple rules. And if they break them,
- 31:54something happens and then they're constant.
- 31:56They're picking at this thing until something else happens and
- 31:58have to figure it out. And that's exactly what they do
- 32:01in this show. I would like to throw this out
- 32:05there, feel free to disagree. This show is in the top five
- 32:09time travel K dramas. I think so.
- 32:12I agree. Yeah, it.
- 32:15Broke into my. Top five.
- 32:17Time travel K dramas, Yeah. Do you care to share?
- 32:21If you have your top five, please feel free to share.
- 32:24What are some great time travel K dramas for people who maybe
- 32:28are not willing to dip back into the archives and watch Queen and
- 32:31I on? For me it was Toby.
- 32:33Yeah, I. Wanted to me too at the VPN to
- 32:36the States TV which was fun. Yeah.
- 32:39Which I love Toby, by the way. Yeah, Toby sponsor me, but.
- 32:44For those people who. Might want some other wrecks and
- 32:47they want to hear the best. What are some of your top fives?
- 32:50OK, so. My top are go back couple
- 32:54twinkling watermelon, Mr. Queen Queen and Young's man.
- 32:59Splash, splash. Love.
- 33:00And lovely runner and I do not know how to rank at least so
- 33:05like I know go back couple is my top.
- 33:08And. Probably twinkling watermelon is
- 33:11second but like the next 4 might be tied.
- 33:14I got you. They're not right.
- 33:16Yeah, yeah. OK, Yeah.
- 33:18Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love Splash.
- 33:21Splash love, yes. So much passion.
- 33:24And I, I'm also scared to revisit it.
- 33:26It's only two episodes, right? But it's up there.
- 33:30It's Don't ask me. I've still not seen it even.
- 33:32Though it's only two episodes, it's one of those things that's
- 33:34great. I don't know why I don't pick it
- 33:36up like, and those times are I don't want to watch.
- 33:39I need to do that. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:42Definitely watch flash. Flash Love and then you
- 33:45mentioned Go Back Couple. We've covered Go Back Couple on
- 33:47the podcast. There's a full review for Go
- 33:49Back Couple and that one was very good.
- 33:52Remember really liking that show as well.
- 33:54Sarah. Would you care to share your Yes
- 33:57I? I share some with Grace,
- 33:59unsurprisingly. So I've got again, unranked Mr.
- 34:02Queen Twinkling watermelon 18 again.
- 34:06And I also count still 17, even though it's not technically a
- 34:10time travel. It has those elements to it
- 34:13because she is in a coma at 17 and wakes when she's 30.
- 34:17Yeah. And then so probably my fifth
- 34:19favorite, which is probably not being usurped by Queen.
- 34:21And I was signal. I thought that they use time
- 34:24travel in a really clever way. And obviously it's not a
- 34:27romance. So yeah, that was that was a
- 34:30great, was it a great time travel?
- 34:31Time travel. I, I watched it so recently that
- 34:34I'm like, I didn't like enter into my rankings at all, but was
- 34:38that, is it time travel or is it speaking through time?
- 34:42So it's a time slip. And I think it's all kind of
- 34:45relatively in the same family, OK, OK.
- 34:48Versus someone like is getting picked up and back to the
- 34:51future, right, right, right. In a different time, yeah, which
- 34:55is fine. Like, that's traditional time,
- 34:56time travel if we're splitting hairs here, but yeah, yeah.
- 35:00Yeah, yeah. But it is, it is a time slip.
- 35:02You're right. You're right cuz they're just.
- 35:04Communicating. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:08I love Signal. Signal has its own podcast
- 35:10review as well. Signal's amazing.
- 35:13And a couple other ones that I have on my cuz.
- 35:17I pulled up some time travel. This has nothing.
- 35:20This wasn't prepared in advance for this review.
- 35:22It's just I happen to have a list of time travel on my phone,
- 35:26time travel K dramas. So I have tomorrow with you on
- 35:29there. I have one more time, which I
- 35:32don't know if you've seen that. It's like an 8 episode Netflix
- 35:34drama from back in 2019 ish era. One of the first Netflix
- 35:39original that popped up. That's not a time travel, that's
- 35:42a time loop drama like Groundhogs Day.
- 35:46Exactly. Just like Groundhog Day signals
- 35:49on here. Splash splash, love queen and
- 35:50hands man. Perfect marriage revenge is on
- 35:53here. The atypical.
- 35:55Family is on here. And then?
- 35:59I have a couple of oldies on here which leads me to my next
- 36:02point, which is there were a metric ton of time travel dramas
- 36:07between 2010 and 2015 specifically.
- 36:11Queen Indians, man is. One of them.
- 36:13So with Rooftop Prince, which came out in 2012, the chosen
- 36:17Crown Prince and his entourage wind up in present day soul
- 36:21while trying to solve the mystery of his wife's death.
- 36:24Really funny show if you liked all of the shenanigans of fish
- 36:27out of water scenarios. Present day versus I'm from the
- 36:31chosen era. I don't know what's going on.
- 36:33I talk funny that is rooftop prints just like Queen and Hands
- 36:37Man, so you'll like that one as well.
- 36:39Faith is also from 2012. The alternate name is The Great
- 36:44Doctor and that one just landed on Netflix recently and I was
- 36:48caught up because I was like, Oh my God, I have not thought of
- 36:52this drama in all these years and even ho is on my screen
- 36:56right now in period dress. The synopsis for that one is a
- 37:00coreo warrior brought to modern times grabs a doctor female
- 37:05doctor and brings her back into time with him to heal somebody
- 37:10of importance. Yeah, so that's even though
- 37:12being the the warrior from back in the day, that's three right
- 37:16there. Operation proposals also from
- 37:182012. That's he tries to fix the
- 37:21wrongs that he did in a relationship and re experience
- 37:26his past choices. So it's almost like a Groundhog
- 37:28Day, but it's more like butterfly effect.
- 37:30He keeps going back in time and like hopes that the future is
- 37:34better and like it never fixes the situation.
- 37:37I have to tell you, I dropped that.
- 37:38One because he went back in time one too many times for me and it
- 37:42was just get it, I was. Like over the.
- 37:44Gag at that point. So that's Operation proposal.
- 37:47The last time you guys were here, it was for a review of I'm
- 37:50Not a Robot. The male lead from I'm Not a
- 37:52Robot is the lead in operation Proposal.
- 37:56Oh. Yes, so we're.
- 37:57Still in the year 2012, that's all those dramas, 4 dramas and
- 38:01then the next year we already talked about this one.
- 38:03I'm gonna say it one more time. 9 times Time Travel came out in
- 38:072013 by the same director and writers an.
- 38:10Anchorman. Uses mysterious incense to go
- 38:13back 20 years to try to save family and change his fate.
- 38:16So that's the synopsis of that drama.
- 38:18Have you seen? Have you seen that one?
- 38:20No, I haven't seen. I think you need to.
- 38:21Watch it just for like, it's also for like saying this.
- 38:25I know. And then?
- 38:28I have here marry him if you dare from 2013.
- 38:31This is one of the worst dramas I've ever seen.
- 38:34But a woman? 'S future self travels back to
- 38:37prevent her past self from marrying the wrong person and
- 38:40chase her dreams. And then of course, Splash
- 38:42Splash Love, which we just talked about from 2015 high
- 38:47school students suddenly journeys to the chosen dynasty
- 38:49and falls for the king in this cute compact time slip drama.
- 38:53I can't say enough good things about Splash Splash Love.
- 38:55Anyway, I don't know if you guys had thoughts about the fact that
- 39:00time travel was so prevalent and sort of is still prevalent in K
- 39:05dramas. It is almost like a genre or sub
- 39:08genre into its own I. Don't have any deep thoughts on
- 39:12it, I just love it as a sub genre.
- 39:15I really, because I think I really enjoy the idea of
- 39:20revisiting things that you would like to change.
- 39:23You know, everyone has, I feel like everyone has the those, you
- 39:26know, pivotal moments, pivotal cringe moments in their life
- 39:31where it's like all of a sudden comes snowballing back to you
- 39:35and you're in that moment again. And you're like, I wish I didn't
- 39:38do this, that time, this awkward, terrible thing that I
- 39:41did or, you know, very uncomfortable situation.
- 39:44And so I always really enjoy this, the thought that like, oh,
- 39:48we could go back and fix it. You know, I'm not sure why it
- 39:52was such a big thing back in the day.
- 39:54I think it's really hilarious that the same writer, director,
- 39:57team had two time travel dramas in the same year.
- 40:01Yeah. Yeah, back-to-back, I mean.
- 40:04Maybe that's when it like really started taking off.
- 40:08I don't know what happened before then, but it was like
- 40:11they've they've now discovered this thing and so they're going
- 40:13to do a whole lot of it. And then over the years, you
- 40:17know, people still play with this because it's such an
- 40:19interesting concept. I feel like playing with time,
- 40:23like playing with, you know, the idea of like changing history or
- 40:27fixing mistakes or being unable to do those things despite
- 40:33having the ability to travel in time or whatever.
- 40:36I just think, you know, it's always going to be interesting
- 40:39because our lives are linear and finite.
- 40:42And so you know. Yeah, so.
- 40:47It's always interesting, I feel like.
- 40:50I feel like it's a trope. That's kind of obviously was
- 40:53really popular and I feel like K drums, you could probably chop
- 40:55peaks and troughs of like particular tropes, you know,
- 40:58that were like fashionable and like I feel like we had a lot of
- 41:01terminal illness in 2025. This is not something we need to
- 41:04revisit, I think. But time travel is is like
- 41:08obviously really popular during those dramas that you just
- 41:11highlighted in the 202012 and 2013.
- 41:14But it keeps kind of coming back because it does really work.
- 41:17And I think that there are so many different dramas that do it
- 41:19and use it in a different way and that we as an audience as
- 41:23well, like we're used to seeing it now.
- 41:25So I think you also need less explainers, you know, like if
- 41:29it's a time loop or if it's a time slip or it's true time
- 41:32travel, you kind of on board and then it's like a vessel is like
- 41:35a wristwatch or you know, it's like a charm or whatever.
- 41:39You're like, it's very quick for your audience to to get on board
- 41:42with it and you don't need to over explain stuff because it's
- 41:46such a common a common trope. I think for me, I like the
- 41:50second chance romance option for time travel.
- 41:53Like I that's why partly why I really love 18 again.
- 41:56I love the thought of someone kind of drifting through a
- 41:59relationship and suddenly thinking like, what, where did
- 42:02it all go wrong? You know, what happened to us?
- 42:05And, you know, maybe I regret doing this and maybe I regret
- 42:08doing that. Like what would it feel like if
- 42:09I could start over again with with my partner and yeah.
- 42:15I have to say for my. Part I really enjoy star crossed
- 42:17lovers and you cannot get more star crossed then you're not in
- 42:21the same time period. Yeah, you know what if your.
- 42:26Soul mate, What if your fated mate is in the a different time
- 42:30period right? What if your soul mates in the
- 42:32past? What if your soul mates in the
- 42:33future? I love that concept.
- 42:35I think it works nearly every time.
- 42:37For me, it's always the execution that kind of like bogs
- 42:40it down and messes up whether it's on pitch for me.
- 42:44But yeah, for the most part, I really like the concept and the
- 42:50premise of time travel. And as I said before, the
- 42:53simpler you keep it, the better. If you get into like, what's one
- 42:58that I was like, you did too much.
- 43:00This is confusing. It's the King, Eternal Monarch,
- 43:03which did. Time travel and.
- 43:05Parallel worlds. And I was like, yo.
- 43:09I loved it though a lot of questions.
- 43:12Versus answers on that one? It's very like Marvel multiverse
- 43:18type of situation and I gotta tell you.
- 43:21I am the biggest MCU hater. And I've seen all those.
- 43:26Multiverse movies. I've seen the Loki series and
- 43:29all that stuff and my head that did my head in.
- 43:32Exactly it. Does your head in?
- 43:33I don't like the multiverse. The only multiverse movie that
- 43:36I'm like this was amazing Was Everything Everywhere All Out.
- 43:40That's the only one that. I left the theatre and I was
- 43:41like on a high. I was like, yes, they nailed it.
- 43:44Yeah, yeah, that was good. Mine was a.
- 43:47Time called you, which is obviously the the Korean remake
- 43:51of Someday or one day that one just right like that.
- 43:54Just it just took me out. I just got so annoyed with what
- 43:58they were doing and I got very excited.
- 44:00I think. We all go into shows with the
- 44:03level of I have to suspend my disbelief if it goes too far
- 44:07into this is crazy. Like they've doubled down,
- 44:11they've doubled back. Why is this happening?
- 44:14I thought they couldn't do this and what is happening?
- 44:19All of that, if it compounds, I hate it personally.
- 44:24Some people. Just get through it and they're
- 44:26like, that was amazing. I love that love story and I
- 44:29applaud them for it. But anyway, Long story short,
- 44:32time travel is still big. I don't think it's going
- 44:35anywhere. Queen and Hun's Man did pretty
- 44:38well for its time slot. Because I looked up the time
- 44:41slot and I was like, what were they thinking?
- 44:43This aired at 11:00 PM. Wow.
- 44:47Super late. The ratings of 1.21.61 point 4%
- 44:53for these episodes, with the finale of peaking at like 2.1.
- 44:58That's good for that time slot because most people are in bed
- 45:01by 11:00. They're not watching television.
- 45:04You're not going to see double. Digit ratings for a show that's
- 45:07airing at 11:00 PM. Sarah and I were like, uh huh.
- 45:10Even though I like went to bed at 2:00 AM last night and she
- 45:14she did worse. Yeah, I was up at 3:00.
- 45:16I was up at 3:00. This was airing.
- 45:19On regular cable. And if you didn't catch it, you
- 45:23didn't catch it. Yeah.
- 45:26I have a fun fact to share, please.
- 45:28So I thought that I think we've all mentioned it the the main
- 45:33leads have great chemistry. So after the show I kind of just
- 45:36did a little bit of Googling. Turns out they dated.
- 45:40Yeah. So and he he confessed his love
- 45:44during a press conference. Was it.
- 45:46I was just like, this is cool. I did not know this.
- 45:50And it kind of I wish I had in a way, because I was like also all
- 45:53those liquidy eyes that he had, they were like for real for.
- 45:57Real they were. For real.
- 45:59Maybe that's. What caught my I was really
- 46:01like, these guys, they're just so good, you know?
- 46:04They've really got such good damage.
- 46:05I feel like she's got great chemistry with her, who she
- 46:08acts. I think she's a bit of a
- 46:10chemistry, but he was really smitten and I was like, I really
- 46:15feel like how smitten you are. Liquid Eyes is such a.
- 46:19Great way of putting it too. Speaking of liquid, I have.
- 46:22No tear about the food because now this might be taking us in a
- 46:25different direction but I had someone comment on a TikTok and
- 46:29I don't know when this was. I don't know who it was but they
- 46:32commented and said K dramas nowadays are just a vehicle to
- 46:36promote traditional Korean food and diet.
- 46:39And I was like, whoa. Whoa, whoa.
- 46:42I genuinely had never gave two thoughts about what kind of food
- 46:46is shown on K dramas and if there's been a change, you know?
- 46:51But watching this show, I was like, wait, they may be on to
- 46:54something because there was no Korean food at all in this show.
- 47:00All the food they were eating was Western food.
- 47:03They go to an Italian restaurant.
- 47:05You know, the managers for these Haliu stars in the show are
- 47:09eating table service bread, pasta.
- 47:12The manager in the show, the BFF slash manager, is eating cereal
- 47:17for breakfast. And I'm like cereal.
- 47:19Whoa. And then the female lead has the
- 47:23male lead pickup, Curry Caddick. Caddick.
- 47:28CARRE. And then they have more.
- 47:34Italian food later in the show, spaghetti and meatballs and
- 47:37mushroom fettuccine Alfredo, which he does not like.
- 47:41He did take to the spaghetti and meatballs that she was having.
- 47:44And it was at that point that I was like, we need to bring up
- 47:47the food in K dramas. Do you have any thoughts?
- 47:50Yeah. We actually did an episode on
- 47:53food. Actually we did 2A2 part.
- 47:55We ended up speaking about it so much, and I remember similarly.
- 47:59So I think the oldest drummer I've watched previously to this
- 48:01was Master Son, which I know that you watch too, Jess.
- 48:05And I noticed it in that they ate a lot of Japanese food.
- 48:08And then I suddenly thought, I don't think I've ever seen a
- 48:11contemporary K drama where they're slurping udon and eating
- 48:16a lot of very solidly Japanese food.
- 48:19Like they'll have to see sashima.
- 48:20Obviously Koreans eat sashimi, so that's the closest I see.
- 48:24But no, I absolutely think that part of the K dramas now is
- 48:28selling the whole K, the whole K culture and food is definitely
- 48:33part. I mean, idle Eye, they did not
- 48:35stop eating Korean fried chicken.
- 48:37So it's definitely not traditional Korean food that
- 48:39they're trying to highlight. It's just Korean food.
- 48:42Yeah, non-stop chicken eating. I was so hungry.
- 48:47It completely worked. And the shots of the food are
- 48:52like, beautiful, yes, you know, they're like ground worthy.
- 48:55Exactly. They're taking care in
- 48:58presenting it in an appetizing way.
- 49:00It wasn't unlike. This you know.
- 49:03Microwave. Exactly.
- 49:07Like I say, it's. So cheap because they don't need
- 49:08a food stylist. They don't need anybody to come
- 49:11here and babysit this food and make sure that a shot looks
- 49:14good, let alone nothing I think was sponsored as far as the food
- 49:18in this show there was. No, I can go.
- 49:20There was no subway, you know, So it was just like.
- 49:24Blessedly simple, and you know the food wasn't the thing of it
- 49:29at all. But if you stop to think you are
- 49:33kind of assaulted with the Korean food when that wasn't the
- 49:37case just a few years ago, you know, we.
- 49:41Have to mention the fashion. Because this is 2012.
- 49:45Listen the. Chunky early 2010's heels, the
- 49:49block heels. I was a victim of this.
- 49:52I had these kind of heels and I was wearing these heels.
- 49:56I don't know if you guys ever had this style of heel before,
- 49:59but it was a vibe. It was of a time.
- 50:02The scarves. With the casual T-shirts, I
- 50:07totally was wearing scarves. Listen, I've lived in Florida my
- 50:09whole life. What need have I of scarves?
- 50:13This was for aesthetics, OK? I was wearing scarves in this
- 50:17era. Yeah, I thought his.
- 50:19Beanies was so his Beanies were so *NSYNC boy band and double
- 50:26denim as well. So I kept going like I kept like
- 50:30I was like, this is boy band era.
- 50:32This is like that, that era of boy band for you and I.
- 50:35It was colored tights. I was like, colored tights must
- 50:37have been big in Korea in 2012. I don't think they were ever big
- 50:42inland. I'm not sure that colored tights
- 50:43ever caught on here. But yeah, obviously colored
- 50:45tights are a big thing. Colored denim.
- 50:48As well was big, I had like bright red denim pants.
- 50:54That I was wearing out. So a lot of things to ponder
- 50:58when it comes to the fashion on this show.
- 51:01What was the most 2012 thing about this show?
- 51:04That's a good question. I think it has to be the.
- 51:07Phones honestly like that, you know, because the phone
- 51:11technology has changed so much over, you know, the course of
- 51:15the last 25 years or so. And so, like, I imagine that was
- 51:20the hot phone, you know, that year, because I feel like the
- 51:23phones they showed them enough where like maybe that it was an
- 51:27ad. And same with the Audi cars.
- 51:30Yeah, the Audi. Cars definitely, yeah, yeah.
- 51:33I thought particularly with the fun, it was basically that we
- 51:36had lots and lots of shots where she is ringing him and there's a
- 51:41shot of her like in shadow silhouette.
- 51:43That was the look I think. I guess Samsung like when your
- 51:47when your profile pic comes up, it like you look like a criminal
- 51:50like it's not that yes. I was like.
- 51:55That's interesting, I think because phones are just like you
- 51:57said, grace, they've just moved on so much so it dates.
- 51:59So for me, definitely that and the fashion was the thing that
- 52:02really. Yeah, felt 2012.
- 52:04Gotcha. All right, we're going.
- 52:06To do our ratings and then I get into the spoiler section.
- 52:09What would you give this drama out of fives hold you bottles?
- 52:13I would probably. Give it like 4.5 or like 4.75.
- 52:20I mean it's. Very.
- 52:21Close to perfect. It's very close to perfect in my
- 52:26book. Yeah, Yeah.
- 52:28I'm the same as Grace. I'm gonna take a .5 surgery
- 52:30bottle, like half a surgery bottle just to see you through
- 52:32the night. So 4.5 for meeting.
- 52:34Oh my God. 4 point fives across the board because I just have
- 52:38like tiny if I have anything, it's like the tiniest little
- 52:40quibble, but like it's so good. I really had a great time
- 52:45revisiting the show. And if you want to watch it,
- 52:47it's on Tubi, so watch it on on UST.
- 52:51VUSTVUS in the. US.
- 52:53Yes, absolutely. We're going to get into the
- 52:55spoiler section right after this.
- 52:59Excuse me, I can't turn. I can't turn.
- 53:02You know. I have no tingles.
- 53:06Oh, sorry, swear. Discussing.
- 53:08Shares what? All right, we're on the.
- 53:14Other side of spoilers. So we are going to tell you
- 53:16exactly what happens in Queen and Hun's Man and why we love it
- 53:19so much. I think Sarah, you want to talk
- 53:21about the time travel and maybe some of the mechanics that
- 53:24really worked for us and the choices that they made that made
- 53:27this show really stand out and break our top five time travel K
- 53:32dramas list. Where would you like to start?
- 53:35I think there's one. Technicality on this that I
- 53:37wrote down, but that's. It it was.
- 53:40Very easy. Easy to understand because he's
- 53:44dealing with a charm that he got from a friend who picked it up
- 53:49from the chief monk at a temple do.
- 53:53You want to pick it up. From there, Sarah and then I
- 53:55think. What I really liked was that he
- 53:57could control the mechanism. So I think he I mean, he's a
- 54:00very smart male lead is our hero.
- 54:03So he figures out that he time travels at exactly the time when
- 54:06he's at threat of dying, which is a very novel and unique and
- 54:11makes for super dramatic like Zop, he's gone and then people
- 54:15are like, my God, where's he disappeared to?
- 54:17And then suddenly, you know he'd buy this like faux English phone
- 54:20box and right, right. And I really.
- 54:24Like that and then at the other end, he can choose when he
- 54:28leaves Modern soul that he can choose when he disappears.
- 54:31So there's again, dramatic moments when he's like locked in
- 54:34a shower that he decides, OK, now's my time to leave and.
- 54:38I quite like. That because I think a lot of
- 54:40time travel is kind of, you know, it's outside the person's
- 54:42control and they don't have such a neat way of doing it.
- 54:46And so I just thought I was super clever of the drama.
- 54:50And then once we got used to it, then they throw another spanner
- 54:54in the works, right, with the charm, because then you're just
- 54:57like, Oh my God, what's happened to the charm?
- 55:00Because then they first they slice it in half and that causes
- 55:04a whole timeline change, which I thought was really interesting.
- 55:09Yeah, that was really. Smart When the when the charm
- 55:12gets damaged, it gets sliced. Everybody.
- 55:15In her timeline in present day forgets it sort of like resets
- 55:20as if he was never there, but she remembers.
- 55:24She still remembers. Him and it's frustrating because
- 55:27they think she's a mental case because she remembers this man
- 55:31and nobody around her remembers. It's very, it almost feels like
- 55:34gaslighting, but it's not gaslighting because nobody.
- 55:37Genuinely doesn't remember yet. Yeah, that's legit.
- 55:40Like nobody remembers he didn't exist there and then in his
- 55:43timeline he forgets, but everybody else remembers that
- 55:47there was something that he was going to another place.
- 55:51Right. Yeah, right.
- 55:52Right, right. And meeting someone.
- 55:54And there was a woman, a mysterious woman that he was
- 55:56talking about. And I love that flip that they
- 56:00do in the show. I thought that was super smart.
- 56:03So they do that for the charm at first and then, you know, you
- 56:08kind of get a little more info about the charm and the monks
- 56:11like you really can't control like how this thing is going to
- 56:13behave. You think you have?
- 56:15Control. Over it.
- 56:16But you don't. And I love that aspect because
- 56:18they introduced that very early on when he's chatting with the
- 56:21monk, you know? There's a.
- 56:23Danger associated with using this charm.
- 56:25You don't know how things are going to turn out right?
- 56:29And I love that they throw. That in there.
- 56:30Yeah, totally. But then you.
- 56:31Forget that there's that danger until something weird happens,
- 56:35you know? And I like that they like, just
- 56:37sprinkle it in like a little bit here, a little bit there.
- 56:41And then towards the end there's a little bit more.
- 56:43But like, it's not like a constant like, Oh no, what's
- 56:45gonna happen next? It lulls you into this false
- 56:48sense of security in between each of the times when it does
- 56:52something weird, you know? And so you're like happily
- 56:56grinning away at them being cute and lovey dovey.
- 56:59And then you have like, no idea. You're like, OK, there's two
- 57:02episodes left. I wonder what's gonna.
- 57:07Happen and then you're like Oh my God.
- 57:09Oh shit, what are the Yeah, right, because.
- 57:13It was 2 folds the girl that gave him the charm, which was a
- 57:17servant of his late wife's because he had a whole life and
- 57:21children that like we don't even get it to.
- 57:23But his wife died and this servant is down bad for him and
- 57:28wants him to be protected throughout all of this, this
- 57:30political upheaval. She gets in this charm, she dies
- 57:34and the charm acts up. Also the original monk who made
- 57:37it for her to give to him also died.
- 57:40So when this happens, it set us off this chain reaction.
- 57:43He cannot return to the present day.
- 57:46And you're like, how the hell are we going to?
- 57:48And I love how they reveal it that, like, first she dies and
- 57:51he's, you know, fighting the last villain of this Lord Minam.
- 57:55Yeah, he's like. It's familiar.
- 57:57Face, by the way, that actor's like in so many things in
- 58:00Mookie. So that the.
- 58:02Remnant of that guy is crew that assassin.
- 58:05He offs him and it's this great one-on-one fight and you're
- 58:08like, Oh my God. So that villain dies and
- 58:11unfortunately that girl dies and then he has to figure out how to
- 58:14get back. So he's trying on this mission
- 58:17to find the monk. And then you find out the monk
- 58:20died, and you're like, yeah. And then you're like.
- 58:22Oh, that's why there were two shades of black.
- 58:25Like it was like mostly black when Uno died and then it it
- 58:29turned all the way all the way black.
- 58:31And that must have happened when the, you know, the the monk died
- 58:35and you're like amazing the. Magic is gone.
- 58:38I know. How can he get back to her?
- 58:40It's so devastating. Yeah.
- 58:42And I have to say that the mechanism for Puncto's time
- 58:46popping is that he has to just like utter a few words, an
- 58:50incantation and come back to the past.
- 58:53But when he goes to her, it's this life or death situation.
- 58:56He's basically killing himself to get back to her.
- 59:00And it's a true sacrifice. Like it's a sacrifice to go to
- 59:04the present because he does have to trust this charm and trust
- 59:08that this thing is going to work every time and he's not actually
- 59:11going to die in perish. It is high.
- 59:13Stakes in that respect, and I respect those mechanics heavily.
- 59:19And it means so much when he goes to visit her because he's
- 59:23killing himself to do it, putting himself in those.
- 59:26Dangerous situations. Yeah.
- 59:27Yeah. And I think the most crucial one
- 59:29was I was similar to Grace in that I was lulled into this
- 59:32false sense of security because I absolutely.
- 59:34I thought that the last battle was like, he's shot with three
- 59:38arrows, Right. Really.
- 59:39Well done. They're like, Oh yes.
- 59:41Shot with three arrows and then he's.
- 59:42Taken away by his servant and put near the charm like just in
- 59:46the nick of time for him to time travel, luckily directly to a
- 59:50hospital and he say and then you're like, OK, he's made it.
- 59:55He's chosen to sacrifice himself.
- 59:57He's he's double crossed. You know the villain.
- 1:00:01He's got the king on his side. He's he's left his like life
- 1:00:05behind. He's chosen to go like it's all
- 1:00:07good. And I'm like great.
- 1:00:09We get like 2 episodes of fluffy stuff.
- 1:00:12I'm like, great, right? I was like there was a little
- 1:00:17bit, I mean there was like 2% is a lot like 2.
- 1:00:19But maybe because it's a six episode, 16 episode drama, we're
- 1:00:22going to get like, you know, maybe it's going to be like,
- 1:00:25what's that drama that was just like full of fluff, the
- 1:00:29secretary pathogen and. Oh.
- 1:00:33What's wrong with Secretary? I thought it was going to be
- 1:00:35like. What's wrong with Secretary UK,
- 1:00:37which is just basically full of fluff and then more fluff and
- 1:00:40then two episodes of final fluff?
- 1:00:42So I was thinking maybe like older dramas, like they give us
- 1:00:44more fluff and then like Bam, he's just about to reach it and
- 1:00:48then I love. I love it.
- 1:00:51I love how they built up everything.
- 1:00:53You know, like you're talking about the three arrows thing
- 1:00:55that's in episode 14 where he gets shot with three arrows
- 1:00:58while he's on trial against Lord Minam and he produces A copycat
- 1:01:02charm in this whole thing and he's like, you didn't think I
- 1:01:04would really get it. That was.
- 1:01:06Amazing. Oh my God.
- 1:01:08It's so good, it's. So good.
- 1:01:10And you can like they do the quick flashback too, him telling
- 1:01:14the king the truth and he's like, yeah, I really am going
- 1:01:17back in time. This charm is real.
- 1:01:18It's magical. How do we get out of this?
- 1:01:20Because I, I want you to kill me and this is how you're going to
- 1:01:24get back the legitimacy and the political power that you need
- 1:01:27from this other faction. And it just like works out so
- 1:01:30well. But he has to take 3 arrows to
- 1:01:33the chest and you're like oh shit if.
- 1:01:35He could die the mysterious. ICU patient.
- 1:01:39Yeah, I know. You know, like disappears and
- 1:01:42I'm. Like, Oh my God, he made it,
- 1:01:44Yeah. It's fantastic.
- 1:01:45That I feel. Like a huge part of what made
- 1:01:49this drama good was just how smart he was and how quick he
- 1:01:53was like because you know that I see like he was like, OK, he he
- 1:01:57like planned it with his servant.
- 1:01:59He's like, come to this spot. Bring my.
- 1:02:02Clerk this spot. Because he was like, OK, this is
- 1:02:07where the ICU entrance is. And so like, when I'm about to
- 1:02:11die, these people can bring me back.
- 1:02:14It's just like. Wow, like you just like it's.
- 1:02:16Such a smart. Gamble.
- 1:02:17Oh my gosh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, fantastic.
- 1:02:21It's so good, I thought there. Was a visual.
- 1:02:23In that episode where he's going back after he's healed up, he
- 1:02:26had gone back since past and then he's going back to the
- 1:02:28future and this is the final time he expects never to come
- 1:02:31back again. He stabs his sword through the
- 1:02:33top of the the GAT his hat. I was like.
- 1:02:36This is hard. This is this visual is so hard
- 1:02:38to me. It looks so good.
- 1:02:39It's so sexy. It's such a symbolic.
- 1:02:42I'm never coming back here. We're done with the past.
- 1:02:44We're done with the humbug. We're done with everything.
- 1:02:47And then in this episode, he goes through and the emotional
- 1:02:50journey of these characters is so great because he does go
- 1:02:52through this moment when he's finally with her.
- 1:02:55And you think everyone thinks the audience thinks this is it.
- 1:02:58We're going to get 2 episodes of fluff, like you said.
- 1:03:00He tells her. Since I don't have a place to go
- 1:03:03back to, I feel like I've been orphaned.
- 1:03:05Yes, and. Then he tells her I love.
- 1:03:07You for the first time so he's still like going through these
- 1:03:09crazy emotions of like I have to leave everything that I've known
- 1:03:13the world that I know the status that I had the money that I had
- 1:03:17the servants that were loyal to me everything behind but I want
- 1:03:21you I want I want to be here with you and I love you I was
- 1:03:24like. Yeah, it's so good.
- 1:03:27I thought it was so powerful and the emotions were were valid and
- 1:03:32I I loved that journey that they go through totally.
- 1:03:36We talked about the. Kisses being so good in this
- 1:03:39show. Did you have a favorite kiss in
- 1:03:42this show? I did.
- 1:03:43I. Think for me it was a really, I
- 1:03:45mean, I have a lot watched a lot of K drama kisses by this point
- 1:03:48and actually it's really interesting to note that these
- 1:03:51kiss scenes are pretty steamy, right?
- 1:03:54This is how little social progression we've had. 2012.
- 1:03:59Kisses look almost steamier than some 2026 kisses that we have.
- 1:04:04But anyway, the one that was really unique to me was the case
- 1:04:06where she we have a shot of her toes and then she stands on her
- 1:04:11feet and I really, because they have a lovely K drama height
- 1:04:15difference, right? Because she's so dinky and he's
- 1:04:17like so nice and tall. And so when they're kissing,
- 1:04:20it's like she wants to just get closer to him.
- 1:04:23So she stands on his feet. I was like, that's good.
- 1:04:26I like that. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:04:28That's a really strong kiss, I think.
- 1:04:30That's an episode. 11 it's he finally comes back and he
- 1:04:33remembers her. This is post Charm Slice or
- 1:04:37whatever. And this was like their whole
- 1:04:41reunion episode where he like is there at the premiere of this
- 1:04:44event thing. I don't even know.
- 1:04:46And he's there on the red carpet and she spots him.
- 1:04:49Mind you, nobody in this world in the present day knows who he
- 1:04:53is at all. They think he's a just a
- 1:04:55phantasm of her mind and he's there and they end up back at
- 1:05:01like an Airbnb situation. He she's so smart bro, because
- 1:05:07he like guilts her into staying. She was initially going to
- 1:05:10leave. She was like, I got you this air
- 1:05:12baby, you could stay here and anyway, I'm going back home And
- 1:05:15he was like, how can you bear to leave me alone here at this
- 1:05:21house that I have? No, I don't know any but he
- 1:05:23guilts her so dirty and she's like, OK, fine.
- 1:05:27So they kiss and he's. Got.
- 1:05:29Impeccable kissing for him, by the way, because he's got like
- 1:05:32his hand on like the side of her cheek.
- 1:05:34And I think there's a line in here.
- 1:05:37But she says I thought my passionate temperament was the
- 1:05:40problem because she's been like kissing him this whole time,
- 1:05:45just. Initiating these.
- 1:05:46Kisses and he's doesn't know any better.
- 1:05:49He's thinking like, oh, is this how you guys say hello and
- 1:05:53goodbye stuff in the present day?
- 1:05:55And she's like absolutely like she's all over him.
- 1:05:58She tells him this because he's like, you're so forward, you're
- 1:06:01you're so passionate or whatever.
- 1:06:03And he says I. Forgot to tell you something how
- 1:06:06attractive that temperament is and she has been calling him
- 1:06:10player this whole show and she goes player she calls him player
- 1:06:14one more time he's like I totally admit that that I am
- 1:06:18playing you and that's. When she steps.
- 1:06:21On his feet to get at him better for this kids.
- 1:06:24They have an incredible height difference so if that's your
- 1:06:27thing, watch the show. And they like sway together in
- 1:06:31this kissing dance that's again super steamy.
- 1:06:34Like the quality of kissing in the show cannot be understated.
- 1:06:39I love that kiss as well. Grace, did you have a favorite
- 1:06:42kissy? Yeah, well, I.
- 1:06:44I love that. Obviously I love that one as
- 1:06:46well. But I thought their kissing got
- 1:06:49even better throughout, like because it's, you know, started
- 1:06:52out a little bit with the fish eyed, oh, I'm surprised type of
- 1:06:55thing. And then as the show progressed,
- 1:06:58their kissing got steamier and like more intimate.
- 1:07:02It was like there was the steamy hot kisses and then there were
- 1:07:05the like, oh, I just love being around you.
- 1:07:07I'm just gonna like, nibble all over you and like.
- 1:07:11Get up in there. And then I really loved when he
- 1:07:14was like, what are neckties for? And and she was.
- 1:07:19Like, Oh, I thought of what neckties are for.
- 1:07:22And then she's like, you know, well, a wife, you know, it's,
- 1:07:25it's a thing that, you know, sometimes wives will put on
- 1:07:29their husband's neckties for them in the morning.
- 1:07:31And then when you're like holding the necktie like this,
- 1:07:34you kind of and looking up at your lover's face, you just like
- 1:07:38it's romantic. So then you and then they kiss
- 1:07:41and she's all giggly and stuff. But I, I really thought that was
- 1:07:45very cute. And I loved his reaction.
- 1:07:47Like, I feel like you're teaching me things about, quote
- 1:07:50UN quote, the modern world, but all of these things are things
- 1:07:54that you're making up so that you can kiss me.
- 1:07:56And I love. I love that, Yeah.
- 1:07:59Like he clocks. Everything that she's doing very
- 1:08:02quickly, you know, she doesn't, she doesn't have the jump on him
- 1:08:06the whole show. Like he's not totally ignorant.
- 1:08:08Like you said, Sarah, he's very, very competent.
- 1:08:11He's extremely intelligent. There's moments where he's like
- 1:08:15figuring out what the clock is like, oh, every 5 minutes, you
- 1:08:19know, And then this whole thing represents 12 hours.
- 1:08:22And I was like, I would never, like, even a child can't figure
- 1:08:26out what a clock I know. I'm saying, like, that's
- 1:08:30impressive. He's so, so smart.
- 1:08:32Yeah. I love that he learns how to
- 1:08:35drive for her and buys her a car at one point and hackles.
- 1:08:39Ever. Sold twice, Yes.
- 1:08:42Yeah. He sells his.
- 1:08:43Family heirloom sword that he they got from the founder of
- 1:08:46Jolson and like he. Sells it the first.
- 1:08:49Time buys her car and as he's telling her, oh, I bought you
- 1:08:52this car. And they're chatting.
- 1:08:54He goes, I think they scammed me out of money.
- 1:08:58And then he sells it a second time because, like I said, they
- 1:09:00reset the timeline basically with the slicing of the charm.
- 1:09:03And he comes back with the sword again.
- 1:09:05And he's like, this time we can buy a house.
- 1:09:08We can buy all this stuff. Cell phone.
- 1:09:11It set me up. Yeah.
- 1:09:14That first time. That he sold it and got the car.
- 1:09:16And he was like, I don't know that this car is worth my
- 1:09:19heirloom sword. I mean, it was pretty valuable
- 1:09:21even back in my day. Yeah.
- 1:09:23And then, and then she like, she's like, well, let me show
- 1:09:26you something else that you can do with the car.
- 1:09:27And she's like, get in, get into the car.
- 1:09:30And they start making out in there.
- 1:09:32And he was like. Yes, I love that his.
- 1:09:34Reaction was like, ah, I see, Oh yeah, this is totally worth the
- 1:09:39price of my sword. Bro like we're all.
- 1:09:43Blushing so hard, like these scenes are cheez tastic and I'm
- 1:09:48lapping it up. Yeah, amazingly cheesy and.
- 1:09:52Wonderful. And they and they call.
- 1:09:54Themselves out on it right because she she says at some
- 1:09:57point she really likes cheesy things like that and he's like,
- 1:10:01what's cheesy He's like yeah, he goes and asked like the first
- 1:10:05friend slash manager like what does cheesy mean?
- 1:10:08Like how can I be cheesy? Like I also to love.
- 1:10:12I mean, you know time travel is always fun when it's fish out of
- 1:10:15water and I do think that they do a really great job of
- 1:10:18deliberately giving her very modern dialogue so she doesn't
- 1:10:23in any way try to make her language a bit anachronistic so
- 1:10:27that he'd understand She's like, I'm going to use like every
- 1:10:31modern day jargon that I'm going to like I've been using and I'm
- 1:10:34not going to dumb it down for you and you're just going to
- 1:10:35have to figure out what all these words.
- 1:10:37So that's like a lot of the fun of time travel dramas, I think
- 1:10:40when he's trying to say what is this, this and how does that
- 1:10:43work? That was really good.
- 1:10:45I like that. I think my favorite kiss.
- 1:10:47Is the library kiss but the second one that happens because
- 1:10:50he trespasses again at the library after the part ways the
- 1:10:54first time. Her and her manager go back to
- 1:10:57scrub the CCTV footage because she's an up and coming star.
- 1:11:00She can't have some kind of scandal come out with this rando
- 1:11:02in the library or her kissing him and stuff and he's still
- 1:11:05there. She goes to leave after meeting
- 1:11:08up with him again in the stacks. And he?
- 1:11:11Kisses her like he is learning very fast as we said through
- 1:11:15this whole show, and he has to know at this point that this is
- 1:11:19not how people say hello and goodbye.
- 1:11:22He goes around the. Stack as she's walking out and
- 1:11:25like grabs her and kisses her and I'm like.
- 1:11:31I think that's the first time. She calls him player because
- 1:11:33he's he's got the most so charming.
- 1:11:36Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And I love.
- 1:11:39That actually that that they made him experienced right.
- 1:11:41So at no point you're thinking like this is some show some
- 1:11:44virgin who suddenly knows what he's doing.
- 1:11:47He's not no, he's like he's been married before.
- 1:11:50So let us tell you this, you know, And do you know when I
- 1:11:52was? Watching this second time I
- 1:11:55thought for sure that the wife that died was her, that she's
- 1:12:01maybe like a reincarnation of his wife which I feel like if
- 1:12:04they wrote it today. That would be.
- 1:12:07Ankle that they would take for sure because they never show the
- 1:12:10pregnant wife's face at all in any flashbacks.
- 1:12:15And I was like, oh. They're totally going to take.
- 1:12:17And who knows if that's something that the writers
- 1:12:19contemplated. And because, you know, they were
- 1:12:22having such success with what they were doing already, they
- 1:12:26were like, I don't think we need to sub that in and go down that
- 1:12:29route of he's into her because that's his wife in the present
- 1:12:33day. But yeah, I always that thought
- 1:12:35did cross my mind that they would do that.
- 1:12:37There was a coffee shop scene where he wipes cappuccino foam
- 1:12:41off of her lips. This is a thing that was in
- 1:12:45older K dramas. There was always some sort of
- 1:12:48food or something stuck to her face.
- 1:12:51They would either kiss it off or take it off with their hands.
- 1:12:54Either way, super intimate. They were obsessed with this
- 1:12:57trick in the early thoughts and 2010.
- 1:13:01Were there any points? In the show that really
- 1:13:03surprised you? Well, you know.
- 1:13:05Because of the way the show started, I kept thinking it was
- 1:13:10going to circle back. So I, you know, even though
- 1:13:12there's ups and downs throughout the whole show, I was like, this
- 1:13:15is going to be a happily ever after.
- 1:13:17I'm sure it's going to end on the very first scene.
- 1:13:21The very first scene, yes, I agree.
- 1:13:24Because they throw you. In to it and you're like what is
- 1:13:27this? And then it feels like they're
- 1:13:29going back and explaining it and then they're working their way
- 1:13:32through to that. So I kept I kept like looking
- 1:13:35forward to that scene and I'm actually ultimately really glad
- 1:13:39that they didn't end it on that. Oh really?
- 1:13:41OK, Yeah. Because.
- 1:13:42It kind of didn't fit. It didn't fit with the story in
- 1:13:45the end. And I loved the way they
- 1:13:47reunited in the at the end, but we'll talk about that later.
- 1:13:51And so so that was a surprise for me.
- 1:13:54I kept thinking this scene is gonna show up later on in this
- 1:13:57show, and it just never did. Right.
- 1:14:00Yeah. Yes, that was a very, I mean, we
- 1:14:02talked about King Eternal Monarch.
- 1:14:03This is a very King Eternal Monarch moment where he
- 1:14:08basically pops out of the past on this road in front of the
- 1:14:12palace. He's on a horse in Hamburg in
- 1:14:15the middle of the street, and she's pulled over her car and
- 1:14:18she steps out of the car like super emotional and obviously
- 1:14:21glad to see him. And then he's looking kind of
- 1:14:23like dapper up on the horse. And we never get that scene
- 1:14:28played out in real time. And it's not that I miss it, but
- 1:14:32like, they could have wrapped it up.
- 1:14:33They could have done it. Yeah, they just.
- 1:14:36Didn't feel the need. To Yeah, they could have.
- 1:14:37They didn't I I think the. Surprises were when, you know,
- 1:14:41the charm broke, everything reset but kind of didn't reset.
- 1:14:44And then again, yeah, at the end it reset in.
- 1:14:47Interesting. Ways so that you know there was
- 1:14:50always someone suffering. Basically there was.
- 1:14:54It's always someone. That has the memory of their
- 1:14:56relationship and that person is suffering because they can't get
- 1:15:01back to the other. Yeah, but I.
- 1:15:02Loved that he, you know, in the end he chose that suffering for
- 1:15:07himself. He was like, I hope that you
- 1:15:09forget so that you can live your life.
- 1:15:12But like right now, my memories of you are all I have left and I
- 1:15:16want to keep those. That's a man.
- 1:15:23Yeah, I don't. There's a couple of things that
- 1:15:26I want to chat about, but yeah, we'll skip to the end in like a
- 1:15:28second. The two technicality things that
- 1:15:32I thought were interesting about the time travel was that they
- 1:15:35don't show him actively sort of trying to commit suicide every
- 1:15:38time he goes back to her, which I thought was smart because then
- 1:15:41he just kind of shows up and you're like, hey, they're.
- 1:15:44Back together and it's never unless.
- 1:15:47It was he was being chased down. There was assassins some sort of
- 1:15:50attempt on his life, legitimate attempt on his life.
- 1:15:53Then they showed that. But as far as like he comes back
- 1:15:56and forth like a bunch of times and it's just on his timing
- 1:16:00whenever he wants. They don't show him like sitting
- 1:16:03there like about to. Slit his throat.
- 1:16:05Or fall on his sword, whatever it is.
- 1:16:08I thought that was smart. But he chops his hair off in
- 1:16:11this show very early on. He has like the Bieber haircut.
- 1:16:15Which I was like. Yes, absolutely of the time.
- 1:16:19It looks really good on this man.
- 1:16:20Whenever he went back in time, he had the top knot, he had his
- 1:16:24little bun and I was like, wait a minute, what's going on?
- 1:16:28And they actually explained it, the servant that he, the
- 1:16:30manservant was like, you can't tell anyone that you cut your
- 1:16:33hair and don't tell anyone that this headpiece is real.
- 1:16:36Like it's he basically has some sort of wig or or sewing or
- 1:16:40something. That's on his.
- 1:16:42Head yeah, that the servant gave him or required for him, and he
- 1:16:46wears that every time he goes back to the past.
- 1:16:49It got. Me thinking about, oh, you know,
- 1:16:52what did men who were balding do back in Joseon and this was
- 1:16:56probably it. Yeah, that's.
- 1:17:00Kind of hard. To fabricate, Oh my God, you
- 1:17:03chopped off your hair like, let's make this from scratch.
- 1:17:07So they must have had them like at the marketplace, right?
- 1:17:11It must have been mass. Produced in a sense, yeah, some
- 1:17:14slaves. Just like, literally just
- 1:17:16glaring their hair for fake top knots, yeah.
- 1:17:19Right, toupee? Yeah.
- 1:17:21Exactly. But there's a one point where he
- 1:17:28doesn't seem fazed. He's talking to the man server.
- 1:17:30This is the same conversation and he doesn't seem fazed that
- 1:17:32he cut off all of his hair. And I thought, oh, this might be
- 1:17:35different if this was made today and they would learn more
- 1:17:38heavily into the Confucian aspect of the hair and keeping
- 1:17:43it long back in the day versus he seems like he's already
- 1:17:47adopted modern day thinking about it.
- 1:17:49And he's like, whatever, I chopped my hair.
- 1:17:52But I feel like that was an opportunity.
- 1:17:54They don't hand hold you in this show at all, which I really
- 1:17:59appreciate. They just give you.
- 1:18:00It's not for us, right? Like it's for the Koreans.
- 1:18:02And that's the thing that I love about watching older K dramas is
- 1:18:06that there's really not a lot of explanation for why.
- 1:18:10Why would people be fazed in the chosen era that he chopped off
- 1:18:15all his hair? You just kind of have to
- 1:18:16understand inherently the big deal that it is right the. 2nd.
- 1:18:21Technicality. That I was going to bring up is
- 1:18:23that in one of the early episodes one or two he brings
- 1:18:26his horse through the time travel as well as an assassin
- 1:18:31from the chosen era follows him. I mean he kills him in front of
- 1:18:36her which causes her to freak out and pass out from the shock
- 1:18:40of the entire thing of this time traveller coming out of nowhere
- 1:18:43and killing someone in front of her.
- 1:18:44But then the assassin sort of disintegrates in front of her as
- 1:18:47well. And I was like is it cause the
- 1:18:50charm is not for him? And then that was the only thing
- 1:18:54that I thought was. I totally forgot about that,
- 1:18:58yeah. I I.
- 1:18:59Figured he disintegrated because his body is now in the present
- 1:19:04day and it's 300 years old, so his corpse would have
- 1:19:08decomposed. Yes.
- 1:19:10Which also begs the. Question when our Mae Lily dies,
- 1:19:15does that mean his corpse is going to disintegrate because
- 1:19:18he's not from that era and suddenly at the physics of a 300
- 1:19:22year corpse is going to take hold of his body or like I have
- 1:19:27questions about this weird technicality so that they.
- 1:19:30Introduced. What this?
- 1:19:32Reminded me because actually I remember thinking in that scene,
- 1:19:35ah, so you can bring someone over with you.
- 1:19:38And then I thought this is another one of those.
- 1:19:40I thought this was going to happen in the plot at some
- 1:19:43point. His his maid who has now become
- 1:19:45a how'd you say it? Grace Ki Seng Ki Seng.
- 1:19:50Says, you know, says wouldn't it be?
- 1:19:51Amazing. I would love to live in a world
- 1:19:54where it was possible to be myself or something along those
- 1:19:59lines. And I thought that was
- 1:20:01foreshadowing how at some point in the future, she was going to
- 1:20:05time travel with him, and then she'd be able to live in modern
- 1:20:08soul and live her life that she just wanted to live instead of
- 1:20:11be, you know, just playing the chin, like, really, really
- 1:20:14sadly. And yeah.
- 1:20:16So then when it turned out that she was dead, I was like, is she
- 1:20:21dead? Dead because she's supposed to
- 1:20:22go back. That was what I had because.
- 1:20:26She was so. She was so sad.
- 1:20:28She was so in love with him, like just so in love with him.
- 1:20:31And she, but she was his, you know, she was really standing by
- 1:20:34him. She was so loyal to him.
- 1:20:36And I thought that was going to be her gift for all of that
- 1:20:39loyalty and giving him the charm was that she was going to get to
- 1:20:42live her own life. And then it didn't happen.
- 1:20:45I know. That's a really good point.
- 1:20:47I think it. Crossed my mind.
- 1:20:50That someone would travel back and forth with him.
- 1:20:52It didn't cross my mind that, you know, would.
- 1:20:55But yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
- 1:20:57That like, they threw that little singer in there, that she
- 1:20:59wanted that world. She craved that world.
- 1:21:02And she never. Got it.
- 1:21:03She died. Because she when?
- 1:21:06He lost his memories of Hejin after the thing got sliced.
- 1:21:11This charm slice. Yeah.
- 1:21:12Yeah, the charm. Slice.
- 1:21:14He offered to take her as his concubine.
- 1:21:17Yeah. And she was like, no.
- 1:21:19And I was like, what do you mean no?
- 1:21:21This is your opportunity, girl. Yeah.
- 1:21:23I forgot that bit. Yeah, that's right, she did.
- 1:21:26Say no. Yeah, but she.
- 1:21:28Said no, I would rather go and live in that other world that
- 1:21:31you told me about. And so I also, Sarah was way
- 1:21:35waiting for this to happen. And then as the drama continued,
- 1:21:41I started thinking, oh, I forgot about the whole horse assassin
- 1:21:45thing at the very beginning. Yeah.
- 1:21:47And I started thinking, oh, maybe he can't take anyone.
- 1:21:50Oh, he can't take anyone. That doesn't work because it's
- 1:21:53not for them. Because the that was after they
- 1:21:56described, oh, the charm only works for him, right, Right.
- 1:22:00And so once they describe, they explained that I was like, oh, I
- 1:22:02guess he can't take anyone. And so I kind of gave up hope in
- 1:22:06that. But I definitely had a few
- 1:22:09episodes where I was thinking, yes, she's gonna get to move to
- 1:22:14modern. Day.
- 1:22:15Soul, I agree and then. I also thought maybe, and this
- 1:22:20was my original, like when I was originally watching the show in
- 1:22:2220/12/2013, whatever, I thought she, the male, the female lead,
- 1:22:27was going to go back in time at some point in the show, and it
- 1:22:30never happened. Yeah.
- 1:22:32So this little technicality about the assassin making it
- 1:22:35through whatever portal opens up for this man when he disappears,
- 1:22:40it just didn't manifest in any way in the show.
- 1:22:43They just kind of leave it be. And that's the best way to do
- 1:22:47it, I guess, is to like, not overcomplicate it and try and
- 1:22:51like, fix it. They're just like anyway, even
- 1:22:54if there's a. Few plot holes, you know, we'll
- 1:22:56just move on, right? It's very.
- 1:22:58Like, OK, and we're moving on because it really doesn't serve
- 1:23:01any larger function in the story.
- 1:23:03It could. Have as we.
- 1:23:04Said like, he could have taken, you know, to the present.
- 1:23:07They could have maybe had her go back in time or maybe Lord Menem
- 1:23:11could have like ended up in the present day.
- 1:23:13Like something could have come through that had more sway over
- 1:23:19the plot, but nothing really did and I think that was good.
- 1:23:22Yes, I think that was good. How?
- 1:23:23Annoying was the BFF manager. There was a lot of shrieking.
- 1:23:29I feel like, I feel like there's always a character just a lot of
- 1:23:32shrieking in all the K dramas. I actually kind of.
- 1:23:36Liked her character in the I think you needed to have someone
- 1:23:39that was constantly questioning her and looking out for her and
- 1:23:43pointing out that she's a celebrity and she can't behave
- 1:23:45this way. And I think it created that
- 1:23:48conflict and that tension because as we've said already,
- 1:23:50this is a really tight cast. So I think she did really good
- 1:23:54on role and you know, she got used to block them at certain
- 1:23:58points and stuff. But yeah, I just needed her to
- 1:24:01be like a notch down volume wise.
- 1:24:03And yeah, just be, I mean, because she's like, she's at the
- 1:24:07same time presented as his characters being like, I'm the
- 1:24:09manager, I'm the sensible one. I'm thinking things through.
- 1:24:13But she was also like hysterical a lot.
- 1:24:15So I was like, yeah, choose which one you want to be.
- 1:24:19Choose Elaine. Yeah, I found her so
- 1:24:21insufferable for most of the show, especially when you're the
- 1:24:25audience and you're rooting for these two, the male lead and the
- 1:24:27female lead to be together and she's constantly cock watching
- 1:24:30them, especially after the the slice of the charm.
- 1:24:34And he's trying desperately to get back to her after he
- 1:24:36remembers what's gone on and like.
- 1:24:40He meets with. The BFF and the BFF is not
- 1:24:42putting them together. She's actively telling her to
- 1:24:46avoid phone calls from him like it's Oh my God, cannot be more
- 1:24:50annoying. But that's her.
- 1:24:51That's her function. That she was written.
- 1:24:53That way. So it's just yeah.
- 1:24:55But it's so and in some. Ways it's also her character's
- 1:24:59job. Yes, you know, and so I actually
- 1:25:02didn't get too annoyed with her because they also did they did
- 1:25:05that in little chunks here and there.
- 1:25:07They didn't like do it in an extended way where I got really
- 1:25:11frustrated. And so I ended up not being that
- 1:25:15annoyed with her. And I did think that the
- 1:25:17recurring gag of her interrogating and being like,
- 1:25:21what school do you go to? How much money do you have?
- 1:25:25What about your family? Exactly.
- 1:25:27Yeah. Sunkung Kuan.
- 1:25:28Funny enough, he. Says he went to Sunkung Kuan
- 1:25:31University. That actor did go to Sunkun
- 1:25:34Kuan. Yeah.
- 1:25:34Really. He.
- 1:25:35Actually went there. He went there.
- 1:25:37Did he live in Bokung too? Well, you know.
- 1:25:42Tongungan is like just like North East of Puchon.
- 1:25:47So maybe he did like. Oh my God, you know I.
- 1:25:53Have a scene here that I really liked and it was in episode 11
- 1:25:57when the ex-boyfriend comes over and he's being really handsy
- 1:26:03with her and he is avoiding the breakup that he knows is coming
- 1:26:07because she's never been the same after she woke up from this
- 1:26:11coma. She got in a car accident when
- 1:26:13the charm slice happened and ever since then she's not been
- 1:26:17the same. And they got this water bottle
- 1:26:19scene of the male like spraying this guy in the face.
- 1:26:23It's so great and he's like. Oh, you have a leak in this
- 1:26:25house? It's so.
- 1:26:26Funny. And he accuses her of basically
- 1:26:292 timing when she finally gets the words out and says, like, we
- 1:26:32need to break up. Yeah, the male lead finally
- 1:26:35says, I'll be responsible for you.
- 1:26:38And he's looking at her so tenderly.
- 1:26:40And it this weird loft situation is in this this mezzanine level.
- 1:26:44Yeah, House, I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:26:47It's a very like. This would never exist in real
- 1:26:49life. It was built.
- 1:26:50For a 2012 K drama exactly it was.
- 1:26:52Built for a 2012 K drama. So he's up where the bed is in
- 1:26:56this loft area, looking down on them, like fighting and trying
- 1:26:59to break up and whatever. I thought this scene reminded me
- 1:27:03of Romeo and Juliet kind of because she's like down below
- 1:27:06and looking up and he's looking down and I don't know.
- 1:27:09It was very emotional and cute and stuff because up until this
- 1:27:14point he had never said he was going to try and stay here in
- 1:27:17this timeline and be with her and take responsibility for her,
- 1:27:21even though they've been kissing every episode.
- 1:27:23Saying goodbye, Jess. That was saying goodbye, yes,
- 1:27:26and. Hello.
- 1:27:27Yes, that's just what you do. Oh God.
- 1:27:31Alright. To be polite, yeah.
- 1:27:32Something else that I want to. Talk to you guys about was
- 1:27:34episode 12. It starts with I think they have
- 1:27:37sex after that kiss that she's standing on his feet.
- 1:27:41So it's presumed. That they have sex, yes.
- 1:27:43OK, presumed that they have sex. What did you guys think of this
- 1:27:48in a 2012 K drama? My first thought was.
- 1:27:51Does he know what birth control is?
- 1:27:53And like condoms, that was your. 1st I loved.
- 1:27:56That's your first thought? No, I was like is.
- 1:27:59This the direction that this show is.
- 1:28:01Going it's like a oops, I now. Have the child though.
- 1:28:07That is your old man funny. I mean, they could have.
- 1:28:10Gone with that. Like I'm sure that.
- 1:28:11They brought it up in their little writers room, these two,
- 1:28:15these two screenwriters and they were like, well, should she be
- 1:28:19pregnant by the end of the show? Because they.
- 1:28:21Had sex this one. Time and it's typing.
- 1:28:25Very. Iffy if they had any.
- 1:28:26Sort of birth control or condom situation, yeah.
- 1:28:30Wow. I do like the gag.
- 1:28:33That the next morning she sees a note by the bed and he's not
- 1:28:36there and she can't read it because it's all in Chinese.
- 1:28:39Yeah, that. Is.
- 1:28:42Funny and actually all it. Says is something for mine,
- 1:28:44right? Like yes, it's her dress.
- 1:28:46Yeah, I was wondering. Sarah Actually, when she picks
- 1:28:50up that note, I was like, oh, I wonder if Sarah could read this.
- 1:28:53Oh, I didn't try. Actually.
- 1:28:54Oh, OK. I've got really.
- 1:28:56Bad. I struggled.
- 1:28:58Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, she. Struggles so much.
- 1:29:01She's like, OK, this one's my name.
- 1:29:04And everything else I don't. Know maybe this is the number
- 1:29:08you know. It's really cute.
- 1:29:11All right, so let's talk about the.
- 1:29:12Last two episodes and then we'll get out of here Oh Jess, sorry
- 1:29:14I. Wanted to before we would get
- 1:29:16there. I wanted to talk about the angst
- 1:29:18in this drama because I think we talked about it, yeah.
- 1:29:20Talk about it so it. Is, I mean, I, I think I've been
- 1:29:24on record before on saying this, like I really like my fluffy
- 1:29:27Romicans, but I love them when they come with a back end of
- 1:29:29angst. And I think they do a lot of
- 1:29:31that. And I think part of the beauty
- 1:29:34of this construct that is when she loses him, when we have the
- 1:29:37charm slice and she resets. But then she kind of knows it's
- 1:29:41that that goblin thing of like, I know that I had a great love
- 1:29:45at one point, but I can't really remember him.
- 1:29:47Why am I so emotional? Why am I so emotional?
- 1:29:49Why? Do I keep?
- 1:29:49Yeah, exactly. All of that stuff.
- 1:29:51But I really, really love every single time.
- 1:29:54She's the only one who really knows what's going on.
- 1:29:57She has no one else to confide in.
- 1:29:59Her best friend is bugging her the whole time, like saying like
- 1:30:02who is this guy? Like what's going on?
- 1:30:05Get a grip. You need to be in your drama.
- 1:30:07And she's just like, you know, I have a love and I can't tell him
- 1:30:12about, I can't tell anyone about him because everyone thinks I'm
- 1:30:15freaking nuts because he comes. From.
- 1:30:18Just in like 300 years ago, but I really love him and I just
- 1:30:22started saying it out loud. This is.
- 1:30:24Just the best. Angst ever and you and that does
- 1:30:27like she just does. As I said, such good cry scenes.
- 1:30:31So she does. I really.
- 1:30:32Really. Felt for her and then flip side
- 1:30:35for him when he has his one year without her, he pens that letter
- 1:30:40Like I always love a letter in a drama so.
- 1:30:44Oh my God, we'll we'll get to it in the.
- 1:30:46End but like he has his like crying scene as well and I'm
- 1:30:50just like all of those scenes were the bits where my heart was
- 1:30:52like I really like it when it feels like a bit broken and then
- 1:30:56I can kind of hope that it'll be healed again.
- 1:30:58They did it so well. I agree.
- 1:31:00They did. I mean, 300 years is a really
- 1:31:03good reason for angst and yearning.
- 1:31:06It's like we're separated by three centuries of time.
- 1:31:11We don't. Know if we'll.
- 1:31:12Ever see each other again? And they did it in such dramatic
- 1:31:15ways, especially toward the end. So yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:20And then also. The I really like the trope of
- 1:31:21like, she kept having to read the history and everyone was
- 1:31:25like, wow, you're such a dedicated actress that you keep
- 1:31:28researching. Like.
- 1:31:30Queen Indians like history and she's just like reading it going
- 1:31:34like he died, he died and like she's crying her eyes out and
- 1:31:38they all think that she's being really empathetic as an actress.
- 1:31:40I just like that whole running gag was just so it was both
- 1:31:44funny and also we obviously felt really, really sad for her.
- 1:31:47Do you know you brought up a great.
- 1:31:49Point because she's starring in this historical, this Haggu
- 1:31:53within the show, she's acting as Queen and Hyun and the script
- 1:31:57keeps changing every time he changes something in the past.
- 1:32:01And that just goes to show that in the confines of the show,
- 1:32:04they are presenting a very real genre, which is the saga genre.
- 1:32:10And they are obsessed with accuracy, right?
- 1:32:14The script. Wouldn't change if they were
- 1:32:15doing some sort of riff off of history.
- 1:32:18They're doing a one for one, yeah.
- 1:32:21And I thought that was. Important to note that was very
- 1:32:24standard for his Hog books for a very long time, is that they
- 1:32:28were historical fiction, but it was based on something real,
- 1:32:32something tangible. I love that she is constantly
- 1:32:36trying to catch up with him because he's moving very fast
- 1:32:40and changing things, big things. She's.
- 1:32:43Only finding out. Because of the show that she's
- 1:32:45in. And it's a long show, long
- 1:32:48action, totally. And I love that it it's always
- 1:32:51big enough that it would cause a script change because there's
- 1:32:55these conversations, you know, that the second male lead has
- 1:32:59with the director when he's mad at her, like, let's just kill
- 1:33:01off Queen Ignon. And the director's like, you
- 1:33:04can't just kill her off. This is like based on real
- 1:33:07history. And then, like the next episode,
- 1:33:10they're like, OK, And then so she dies.
- 1:33:12And then she gets mad because she thinks that the second male
- 1:33:16lead changed the script, but it's actually the history had
- 1:33:19changed. Yeah.
- 1:33:20I thought that was really cleverly done.
- 1:33:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:33:23I agree. We covered a lot of what happens
- 1:33:25in these last two episodes already, but you talked about
- 1:33:28the love letter that he writes her and this beautiful scene of
- 1:33:31him just devastated and crying. And, you know, he's effectively
- 1:33:36never going to see her again, never going to get back to the
- 1:33:39present. And he's already lost everything
- 1:33:42that meant anything to him. You know, earlier in the show
- 1:33:45when he was wrapping things up in the past, in the chosen era.
- 1:33:49And he writes this love letter. They've got this line in here.
- 1:33:52He says a pointless life without even memories would be hell.
- 1:33:55He hopes that she forgets him if he burns the charm, destroys the
- 1:34:01charm. But he hopes that he remembers
- 1:34:04her. And it's so raw and so painful
- 1:34:07and so angsty. And he just looks so sad.
- 1:34:11Oh my God. I loved it.
- 1:34:13I loved everything about that. Simon.
- 1:34:15Yeah. I think also for me, like he is,
- 1:34:18I mean, he is, you know, competency porn, right?
- 1:34:21He is really great male lead. He's So what I really love about
- 1:34:25him as well, like he's so calm and he's so every obstacle he's
- 1:34:30thinking it through. I love this actor's smile as
- 1:34:33well. Like he obviously I love the
- 1:34:35thing where she's I mean, you and I always does this really
- 1:34:37well, but she's kind of bit scatty and a bit like crazy and
- 1:34:41and bright and sparkly and he just loves all of that about
- 1:34:45her. So he's always looking at her
- 1:34:47quite indulgently in a bit like, you know, you are really cute
- 1:34:50kind of thing. But everything that obstacle and
- 1:34:53thing that he comes up against, like, you know, everything he
- 1:34:55doesn't understand, obviously there's a lot of it.
- 1:34:57He just deals with it so calmly. And when he really breaks, I
- 1:35:02think then that even feels like more more painful because you're
- 1:35:06like, suddenly this this guy that was like, I can fix this.
- 1:35:10I can sort this. I've got solutions for this.
- 1:35:13Suddenly he has to face up to the fact that he's run out of
- 1:35:16solutions and road now the monk died and he just can't work out
- 1:35:22how to get back to her. Like he can't solve for it.
- 1:35:24And then, you know, the enemies for him are coming to get him as
- 1:35:28well. So he is slowly walking towards
- 1:35:31what he thinks is his, his final days as well.
- 1:35:34And we finally see him break. And that's really powerful.
- 1:35:37Yeah. Because.
- 1:35:38He's had it together pretty much this whole time.
- 1:35:42He's been really good at controlling his emotions.
- 1:35:46And that moment when he breaks as he's writing this letter,
- 1:35:50he's like, I hope you'd find it and think it's written about
- 1:35:53somebody else and like, it's so and.
- 1:35:56Then it's. Prophetic, isn't it?
- 1:35:59They do it so well. They use this letter so well.
- 1:36:02They use that because. In the final episode, she gets
- 1:36:06called up to narrate this historical documentary called
- 1:36:10Queen and Hyun's Man. The name of the show in the
- 1:36:14show, and they found this letter amongst this official's
- 1:36:19belongings. And if they think it was written
- 1:36:22to Queen and Hyun, it's evidence that she had this affair, this
- 1:36:26man that was actually might have been in love with her and all
- 1:36:28this stuff, right? Just like a show that maybe
- 1:36:31you'd watch today that's, you know, on The History Channel or
- 1:36:35whatever this program that comes on.
- 1:36:37She forgot. She forgot him completely, but
- 1:36:40he remembers. And that's just what he wished
- 1:36:43when he burned the charm. Oh my.
- 1:36:47God when she's. Filming at the palace and
- 1:36:48crying, and she just doesn't know why she's crying, why she's
- 1:36:51so emotional. Yeah.
- 1:36:54I love that so much because it was like her body remembered,
- 1:36:58yeah. Her.
- 1:36:59Minded. I love that one.
- 1:37:01It's like that. The single tear falls down your
- 1:37:04face and you're like, wait, what is this?
- 1:37:06What's going on you? Know and then like and.
- 1:37:09Then she's like, more and more overcome by this visceral
- 1:37:12emotion. Yeah, like she's grieving.
- 1:37:14Something she doesn't know what the hell she's grieving.
- 1:37:17I love her. She's like, what the hell is
- 1:37:18going on? Yeah, I love this reaction.
- 1:37:21From her and she just can't get through through it, can't work
- 1:37:24through it. And in the past simultaneously,
- 1:37:27he has been captured, he's in prison, he still has those
- 1:37:31modern day clothes, the final outfit that he had when he left
- 1:37:34her. And he takes the necktie.
- 1:37:36The necktie. The necktie.
- 1:37:40He uses it to make a. Noose to commit suicide and I
- 1:37:44was like oh. I'm.
- 1:37:48Going to keel over? And as he is hanging from a
- 1:37:52beam, she finally gets a glimpse of the past that she's forgotten
- 1:37:58and remembers his phone number, dials the phone number.
- 1:38:03His phone lights up in the past. The call is connected.
- 1:38:09Amazing the new charm. It's a phone.
- 1:38:13It's a phone, she fully. Remembers him and he comes down
- 1:38:19from the beam doesn't finish dying and you know he answers
- 1:38:25her call and gets. Transported.
- 1:38:29Back to the present. Day I loved.
- 1:38:32It I. Loved it 2 technicalities that
- 1:38:35it doesn't ruin it for me but it's just like OK how the hell
- 1:38:39was that phone on for a year? Miss same that's.
- 1:38:43I like this is a. 2012 phone. I mean my one barely lasts a
- 1:38:47day. How is that one lasting a year?
- 1:38:50I was like, I don't. Remember my phone lasting that
- 1:38:53long a year? Without.
- 1:38:55Charging all right maybe he shut it off and turned it on whatever
- 1:39:00yeah but totally, you know you can work around it that maybe he
- 1:39:04turned it on recently and he still had some juice in it but
- 1:39:07anyway there was that it was the best model in. 2025, yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:10He bought they're really. Selling this well, he had a lot
- 1:39:13of sword money. So he was, he was able to avoid
- 1:39:15like it's like today's equivalent of the iPhone 17 Pro
- 1:39:18he bought top of the range. And then the second
- 1:39:22technicality. That I loved was how the hell
- 1:39:25did he find her after he came back to the present day?
- 1:39:28Yeah, how did? He find her in that.
- 1:39:31Studio. Yeah, cuz she's not.
- 1:39:33Like, you know, by the faux English phone box, right?
- 1:39:35She's not old or in her apartment.
- 1:39:39She's. Just not in the usual spots.
- 1:39:42So how did he find her? No, no answers there.
- 1:39:44But their memories brought them back together and.
- 1:39:48It ends. With like a make out session in
- 1:39:51this studio as she's re watching the footage of this documentary
- 1:39:54that has yet to be finalized. And she's like, Oh my God, he
- 1:39:59wrote this letter for me. Oh my.
- 1:40:02God. It's so amazing, it's so good.
- 1:40:06I think you said you really liked this ending and and that
- 1:40:08they didn't ever return to that initial hook.
- 1:40:13Of him in. The street on the horse and her
- 1:40:17getting out of the car. Yeah, because I think.
- 1:40:19It was much more meaningful this way.
- 1:40:21Like to tie in his love letter and the whole necktie scene and
- 1:40:25he like cracks a joke about the like, you know, I really missed
- 1:40:30what you did with the necktie. I missed it to death.
- 1:40:32Like basically it's like it's like.
- 1:40:34Oh. That's really hitting the nail
- 1:40:36on the head there. You really did, Although the
- 1:40:39previous watcher of lots of procedurals like bones, I was
- 1:40:43like, oh, he would have died. He would have died his neck.
- 1:40:46Would have cracked, yeah, because.
- 1:40:48It's a yeah, it's a the weight of his body.
- 1:40:51On the neck, yeah, that's. What would have happened?
- 1:40:54But I was like, we'll just let that pass.
- 1:40:57Right. Like there's like.
- 1:40:58Technicalities in here that I don't think necessarily derail
- 1:41:02this thing at all, right? No it doesn't.
- 1:41:04You can suspend your, you know, disbelief or whatever for those
- 1:41:08small things because they're not huge things.
- 1:41:10They're like little things, like, even like her.
- 1:41:13How did he find her? Like, they were both in the kind
- 1:41:16of same area, and it was pouring down rain.
- 1:41:18And maybe as he was answering the phone, he was looking around
- 1:41:21and he saw her, like, enter the building or something like that.
- 1:41:24I don't know. Right.
- 1:41:25And then he darted. Into the bathroom to put on a
- 1:41:26suit, Yeah. That's right.
- 1:41:29And then came back out. Oh my God.
- 1:41:30He looked so good in that he done that was.
- 1:41:33Like especially. Especially when he was just
- 1:41:36wearing like the pants and the white shirt.
- 1:41:38The white shirt look, yes. Oh my gosh.
- 1:41:43Oh my. Gosh.
- 1:41:44I agree. I think.
- 1:41:45I know this is late to do this, but I think he's so fine.
- 1:41:48Like this guy. Yeah, does it for me.
- 1:41:51I think he has a unique face. I think if this was made today
- 1:41:54he would never get cast simply because because he doesn't look
- 1:41:58like today's stars, if that makes any sense.
- 1:42:02Yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 1:42:04It was nice to see. No veneers on anybody.
- 1:42:08Well. Except for that.
- 1:42:09Other guy, I think maybe he has had second melody.
- 1:42:12Second melody. Second melody, I thought.
- 1:42:15He did a really good job with his character.
- 1:42:17Also I agree, very convincing. Egotistical like selfish
- 1:42:22manchild, so unlike. But then at the end.
- 1:42:26When they're joking, like during the part where she forgets about
- 1:42:31Kimbundo and there's like this banter where he's like, oh, do
- 1:42:35you want to go out with me? I'm so lonely.
- 1:42:37They like joke with each other. I'm like, let's see, this is the
- 1:42:40right vibe. Because honestly, that part
- 1:42:42where the the leak in the ceiling and he's like, doesn't
- 1:42:45want to get broken up with and stuff.
- 1:42:46I was like feeling, I was feeling lots of feelings about
- 1:42:50like, oh, this, you know, it's like dangerous.
- 1:42:52Yeah. I don't like it.
- 1:42:53And then when, you know, the male lead swoops in and, like,
- 1:42:56intervenes and then he's like, don't you know men?
- 1:43:00Yeah. I was like, yes.
- 1:43:02Yes, she was like, I thought you left.
- 1:43:04I thought you left, she goes. And then he's like, why would I
- 1:43:07leave? Men are off.
- 1:43:08You don't know men at all. Like he was gonna go off the.
- 1:43:11Deep end. He was getting very aggressive
- 1:43:12with her. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:43:14Totally. Anyway, very convincingly
- 1:43:17played, though I felt very. Convincing that jawline could
- 1:43:20cut glass. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:43:22No, he was very believable as being the hottest K drama actor.
- 1:43:27Of the time, yeah. Yeah, I believe it.
- 1:43:30Lots of things that we unpacked in the show and the ending
- 1:43:33really stuck the landing. Do you have anything else you'd
- 1:43:36like to add about Queen and Hun's?
- 1:43:38Man, this was so much fun. It was so.
- 1:43:41Much fun. Thank you all.
- 1:43:43I have to say is this was totally not on my radar until
- 1:43:46you until you said, hey, what are the, you know, shows you
- 1:43:49want to do you have interest in? And then Sarah said that one.
- 1:43:52I was like, I have never heard of this, but yeah, I'll go for
- 1:43:55it. But I loved it.
- 1:43:57Yeah. I really.
- 1:43:58Loved it, been on my watch this for a while.
- 1:44:00I've because I really love you and I really love time travel,
- 1:44:03but I was always, I think it's an also hard for me to find
- 1:44:07because I don't enjoy having to do VPN because then I can't
- 1:44:10watch it on my big TV and I have to go do something else.
- 1:44:12But I was like, oh, this is a sign.
- 1:44:15Like, this is my push to watch it.
- 1:44:17And it was. It was great. 16 episodes zipped
- 1:44:20by and I loved it. I really, really loved it.
- 1:44:24Yeah, I'm so glad. And.
- 1:44:25I loved it too. I had a really great time.
- 1:44:28So easy pressing play on the next episode.
- 1:44:30There was no pushback from anything about it.
