- 0:47All right. Well, as you can see all of our
- 0:50faces, look a little rejuvenated.
- 0:53So it's happening like, we're coming back up for happening.
- 0:57I know right? Baby steps.
- 0:58Baby steps. Welcome, once again, for another
- 1:01fun episode of Athletics, LLC, season 3 and Kickin.
- 1:05We're still here. We're still going and We got, we
- 1:08had some fun stuff and as we get ready for world, but I have a
- 1:11little bit of fun before we start making predictions.
- 1:14Once again, you think we've created some point, but no, here
- 1:18we are. We're going to make predictions
- 1:20next week for World Championships.
- 1:21So Clyde. How are you this evening?
- 1:25Sir. Injured this evening but I'm
- 1:28here. Traitor, traitor.
- 1:38The governor. How are you tonight, sir?
- 1:41Pretty good, pretty good. AC issues, but we'll get to the
- 1:47bottom. Oh, really good thing is you
- 1:52don't live someplace. Oh wait.
- 1:54Yes you do. So basically what I heard is the
- 1:58governor's recording with no pants on right now, he's got his
- 2:02shirt. Nope, our car.
- 2:04The car, the car that's actually a great idea.
- 2:07Oh my God. So lucious, how are you tonight?
- 2:17Sir I am absolutely wonderful. I am rolling as usual.
- 2:20My friend love it, love it. What do we expect?
- 2:24Otherwise solutions to any other.
- 2:28I woke up this morning right time to get on the ground.
- 2:31Exactly. Exactly last but not least, let
- 2:34me slow down to this Mariano. Rivera Huffman's.
- 2:37Okay, I got it. I looked a lot harder.
- 2:41Yeah. That looked harder than it was.
- 2:42All right here, that guy. Okay.
- 2:45Yeah. Yeah, I came.
- 2:46I came. I came in.
- 2:47I came in to enter the sandman and I'm planning to save show,
- 2:51and I'm going to call you cutter Huffman's for the show.
- 2:54Yes, absolutely. I will.
- 2:56I will respond to cut her husband's.
- 2:58Alright. Alright.
- 3:01Well After all those Shenanigans, let's do a thing.
- 3:07Call some topics on this sport that we say we love track and
- 3:11field so you know, the topic of contracts professional athletes
- 3:17and I say in quotations professional because that's all
- 3:19up to those who are hearing. Those words said out loud,
- 3:24professional athletes contracts. And should they be disclosed
- 3:29because we saw a tweet from Miss Steiner.
- 3:32We had a whole plethora of people chiming in to sense as to
- 3:35what her contract looks like. And it happens every time we
- 3:38have someone new signs, something big in our sport, but
- 3:42do we think that should check out these contracts be disclosed
- 3:51Okay, Bueller. We're talking about this because
- 4:04of her message. She put out via, you know,
- 4:08social media in reference to this issue as much of a fan as I
- 4:12am of Miss Steiner. And I am what she wrote was a
- 4:15eloquent it was emotional, it was heartfelt, and it was dead
- 4:19wrong. She's just wrong.
- 4:26First of all, let's be clear about this.
- 4:29When you become a professional athlete, in every sport that I
- 4:33can think of Your contracts are public knowledge.
- 4:39Hell, they do whole Extravaganza TV shows of based on, you know
- 4:45how much money in NBA or NFL or even baseball and hockey are
- 4:50getting paid and there's reasons for that.
- 4:54But the biggest reason for me the reason that this particular
- 4:58topic was so sad to watch her be so wrong about is I understand
- 5:03you want. You know you privacy and
- 5:04everything but here's the thing money, attracts money.
- 5:11So one, if you're in the very, you know, small Club of people,
- 5:16who in the sport, actually, make some decent money.
- 5:19Oh, you want that information out there?
- 5:22But it's kind of it's always use the analogy.
- 5:26It's kind of like voting rights, right?
- 5:28There's a reason that certain politicians and certain sects of
- 5:32our population work really really hard to make it difficult
- 5:37to vote because voting matters. Money attracts money.
- 5:41There's a reason why track and field contracts are supposed to
- 5:45be secretive and that they basically make you sign an NDA.
- 5:49So you can't put it out there in the public, it's because they're
- 5:52trying to keep you all broke. Money attracts money.
- 5:57And if everybody's contracts were public knowledge, the
- 6:00public would instantly see how poorly and ill-paid.
- 6:04Our sport, our athletes in the sport are.
- 6:07So the fact that the athlete even go along with this idea of
- 6:11the contracts need to be secretive and no one should know
- 6:14how they work and we don't dare talk about it.
- 6:17You're only working against yourselves and so, you know,
- 6:22It's a completely backwards phenomenon that everybody needs
- 6:24to get past and get over but every other industry also has
- 6:29floors for how much professional athletes, get paid, and of
- 6:34course, track and field doesn't have any floors.
- 6:37So they don't so Nike Adidas wherever they don't want the
- 6:40world to know that they're only paying shoot 20 thousand dollars
- 6:43and they're paying Huff 700k a year.
- 6:46They don't want to know that because the difference in their
- 6:48marks might only be a tenth of a second.
- 6:51They don't want you all to know how this works and that's why
- 6:54it's supposed to be secretive, but it shouldn't be and get over
- 6:58it. Oh, I stick.
- 7:02I will run the back stretch on this one.
- 7:06So, look, this is really simple, folks in track and field.
- 7:08Listen up, please, pay attention track and field athletes in
- 7:13track and field coaches alike. You don't make anywhere near
- 7:16your market value and in the pantheon of Athletics almost
- 7:21solely because you're too secretive about how much money
- 7:24you don't make. Half the reason track and field
- 7:27coach has, as a whole not, all of, and have to reason why track
- 7:31and field athletes as a whole. Not all of our broke is because
- 7:36they keep their salaries secret. If everybody knew what you
- 7:41meant, there would be a whole faction of people who would say,
- 7:45man for, as hard as you guys work, your soul, crazily.
- 7:49Underpaid man, given what you guys do, and what women's
- 7:53basketball does, and what Ken Does.
- 7:56And what golf does man? You guys really don't make any
- 7:59money, so there would actually be Advocates to advocate for
- 8:03track and field athletes to unionize.
- 8:07Have a floor. Have what's it what the
- 8:11insurance have collective bargaining have?
- 8:14Medical have all those things but no, we want to keep the fact
- 8:20that, you know, I make 60 and you know, sir Lucius makes Ian
- 8:26and next year, when when, when the governor comes out, right,
- 8:32you know, his contract is going to be 628.
- 8:34But don't tell anybody because we don't want, we don't want
- 8:37solutions to get met. Listen, listen folks a high tide
- 8:43raises all boats. You can't come out of college
- 8:51having run fast, but didn't run fast enough in the semi to make
- 8:54the final. So they give you, they begrudge
- 8:57you a contract that's, you know, fifteen thousand dollars a year,
- 9:01plus bonuses that you feel are achievable, but aren't because
- 9:06you won't ever get in any of the lanes that necessary to make
- 9:09these things happen, right? Like you would never sign that
- 9:12contract. If that contract never existed
- 9:14in that contract wouldn't exist, if It was public because they
- 9:17would be like you can't pay someone fifteen thousand dollars
- 9:19a year. Plus bonuses.
- 9:22That's not a contract, right? You can't pay somebody $0.00 but
- 9:27we get look, we all know that this is a deal.
- 9:30Hey, gear and bonuses deal. We every one of us on this
- 9:34screen knows that, that is legitimately a contract that is
- 9:36offered gear and bonuses. That is zero dollars and zero
- 9:40cents and kill what you eat. That's what that is.
- 9:45Are you still get taxed? Yes.
- 9:48Sodexo mechanics, you will tax you on the equipment, that's it.
- 9:52So I'm not going to stick in hand off to so lucious.
- 9:55Yeah, because I definitely will run the bend on this one.
- 9:59I mean, this is simple for me and Clyde.
- 10:00You're right. This is a lot more interesting
- 10:02topic than I thought it would be.
- 10:29If you're a football coach experience, okay?
- 10:33You automatically know the ad knows where you go, right for
- 10:37the track and field coach, there's not there.
- 10:40Right. So let's look at the business of
- 10:42track and field, you come to the world championship the Olympic
- 10:46Games, or even some of the bigger Diamond League meets in
- 10:49the stadium is packed, right? And the people that are in the
- 10:55show, are not the ones making the money.
- 10:58We have CEOs of companies, USA Track and Field to begin with.
- 11:02They make a million dollars a year, okay?
- 11:05Very few people in track and field, the athletes themselves,
- 11:09make a million a year. So by that, by salary, oh, it's
- 11:14probably less than five. Exactly.
- 11:16And that's my point. So at the end of the day like
- 11:20it's just it's been skewed horribly.
- 11:22And when it comes to the athlete, just like when it comes
- 11:24to the coaches, if the contracts are made public and you're
- 11:27right, you know, if I find out somebody's making a dollar more
- 11:30than I am, and I'm not the guy going over there, right?
- 11:33Screaming beloved. So that person better than me.
- 11:36Right? I've got this.
- 11:38And they've done that. So like you asked That question.
- 11:41But you can't ask the question if you don't know.
- 11:43So, as long as they're allowed to keep it secret, I mean, we
- 11:45know like the gear deals. You know, like I had a exact
- 11:50from one of the major shoe companies, say to me, we can't
- 11:53give the smaller contracts, meaning the 75,000 dollar
- 11:58contracts, because we're paying everybody else way too much
- 12:02money, you're stunting, the development of track and field.
- 12:05But once again, you know, if the athletes would let people know
- 12:10that This is happening to me, that it wouldn't happen.
- 12:12So you guys are right, you know, it should be public and then if
- 12:16it becomes public because the moment, the track of what
- 12:19athletes stand up and demand that, we're going to have a
- 12:21union and quit, paying you guys follow me on for our efforts.
- 12:26Yeah, and Dennis portal. Get better.
- 12:29Governor, take it home, brother. So I'm I'm, I'm going to take
- 12:38another approach to this and and, You know.
- 12:44We've been dealing with the same issue for decades, right?
- 12:49It's this, I mean, Le Mariano can can can attest to this.
- 12:58Here's kind of a mindset where we almost felt like we had to
- 13:03keep it secret, right? Because God forbid were in a
- 13:08room with our peers, right? And I'm an eight, sixty jumper
- 13:16and I go say, you know hey 820 jumper, what have you made And
- 13:21God forbid, he comes out and says, I'm making a number bigger
- 13:25than you, right? So within the track Community,
- 13:31right? The mindset, you know, there is
- 13:34this mindset where we kind of have to go in there.
- 13:38As, you know, kind of like a trojan horse, you know, like
- 13:41I've got my little piece of the pie and I'm happy with this much
- 13:44this piece of the pie and I'm good, right?
- 13:49But the point, I'm the point I want to get to is, I'll never
- 13:53forget doing my masters in Sports Marketing at Florida
- 13:59State and One of the things that we forgive you for that, by the
- 14:05way, but Mom story, you know, love is love but so I'm taking
- 14:18this class and they talked about the first million-dollar
- 14:23contract in pro sports, right? And I'm going to, I'm going to
- 14:28focus on on baseball here. Okay.
- 14:31Okay. Can anyone guess who the first
- 14:32million-dollar baseball player was?
- 14:38I'll throw you a softball. Use a picture asking, say it's a
- 14:43picture and I can see his face. Humming, you know, we don't have
- 14:48that kind of time. Texas Rangers, why?
- 14:55Four years, four point five million dollars in 1979.
- 15:00Okay. The reaction was are you fucking
- 15:05crazy? Are you paying someone to throw
- 15:10a ball, a million dollars a year, right?
- 15:14Yep. That was the reaction in 1979.
- 15:18You got people trying to put food on their plate.
- 15:21You're going to pay this person. But guess what?
- 15:24Also, When people showed up because they had to see what
- 15:29this looks like. What does someone making a
- 15:34million dollars a year? Look, like I have to see it.
- 15:38I have to be there after see it, right.
- 15:41And where are we at in baseball now?
- 15:44Yeah, that's okay. That's what my point.
- 15:47Yes. Yeah so I mean I meant when
- 15:50Barry when Barry signed his deal to go to the Giants and it was
- 15:52like 7.9 million A year like, literally everybody was like
- 15:56he's gonna break baseball. Yeah. so, so my point is this I
- 16:02remember sitting in the stands. When bolt ran the 4 by 1 at Penn
- 16:07relays. And it was the craziest thing
- 16:11I've ever seen 30 minutes before he was supposed to run the
- 16:16stands were half empty. The gun goes off, the stands are
- 16:21packed, he crosses a line waves to the crowd.
- 16:24Okay, 30 minutes later crowds, half-empty people got on the
- 16:28train from New York, people came from all, because guess what?
- 16:33It wasn't just, you know, yes, it was bold, but they also knew
- 16:38this man was me. King multi-millions of dollars.
- 16:42They knew that it was public knowledge, right?
- 16:46Money makes it relevant, it does.
- 16:49I mean, we already makes it relevant what, and what Society
- 16:53do we live in? We live in a society that
- 16:55responds to the outrageous they respond to these things.
- 17:02We remember where we were when MJ and Donovan lined up for a
- 17:07million dollars. We remember that.
- 17:09All right, that was a moment. Okay, so you know for someone in
- 17:17her position in Abby's position, let's just say she's, you know,
- 17:23whatever the contract is, all right?
- 17:27It's supposed to be news. It's supposed to be something,
- 17:32right? Hey, better be here, talking
- 17:34about, right? And it needs to be something
- 17:36that, okay? Somebody else can aspire.
- 17:39To do as well. Absolutely, right.
- 17:42Okay. It's like, so, the Mario and I
- 17:45had this conversation early, right?
- 17:46And we figured out that there was one Collegiate track coach,
- 17:51whose salary was more than the entire staff of another school.
- 17:55You're right, okay. Now and what world is that,
- 17:59right? Especially when the guy whose
- 18:02intent self and his entire staff are making less than that.
- 18:05Guy are expected to beat that guy, right?
- 18:09So where's that? Where's the equity in that
- 18:11situation? But again, if you know, all of
- 18:13this use and here's the sad part, the ades, no trust.
- 18:18No. Absolutely, but nobody talks
- 18:20about it, you know, there's Whispers in the hallways but
- 18:22nobody wants to talk about the fact of the iniquity.
- 18:24So I agree with you guys like if it's public, then it can be
- 18:28bantered about. It can be talked about it.
- 18:31Elevates raises, the floor is Clyde likes to say, right?
- 18:35It makes everybody better. Absolutely.
- 18:37That's so, you know, obviously there's And it's been reported
- 18:40that she's going to get two million dollars.
- 18:42Clearly, that's apparently not the deal anymore, was never the
- 18:45deal. But let's say a b Steiner and
- 18:47some World got two million dollars a year.
- 18:50First of all, great for a be Steiner if that ever happens.
- 18:53Second of all great for track and field because salute member
- 18:57go back and remember this, remember when Candice Hill got
- 19:00her big deal? Yeah, right.
- 19:03And then all of a sudden Rimmel and to grayskin big deal, you
- 19:07know all of a sudden you got highwomen High school athletes
- 19:10sign in to for 250 to 300 thousand dollars out of high
- 19:12school. Yeah.
- 19:14Okay. If those things that were
- 19:15happening, it's not public. Then the following didn't happen
- 19:18either. Absolutely I mean my our sport
- 19:23can't be the only sport where the rules of the rest of the
- 19:26world don't apply right. Like if Abby Steiner or Joe
- 19:31family or whoever in this new class when Sid for whence it
- 19:36came out and got the contract if Contract isn't ESPN worthy, but
- 19:43it becomes knowledge on ESPN, then everybody's going to get
- 19:47more money. Hmm, yes, leaky Dam contract.
- 19:51If you have to, I don't care how you do it, but the see what is
- 19:55not actually. I'm glad you said, because the
- 19:56EP and I talked about this also, you know, Kareem and the
- 19:59governor did a lot people favors when he, when he, when he talked
- 20:02about Lonnie greens contract, right?
- 20:06A lot. He's like, you're talking like
- 20:07it's absolutely out there, brother.
- 20:15Kentucky is doing this. If I need to get my program were
- 20:18Kentucky's is, you know, not even get there.
- 20:22Don't get me wrong. I am in no way.
- 20:24Am I details on the internet, but if it gives their then good
- 20:31for the people that read it, right?
- 20:32I'm not well. Okay, so let's go back to
- 20:38something. Okay?
- 20:39It is funny, you brought up your contract and I was, I was
- 20:42waffling because I didn't want to embarrass you, but I'm going
- 20:44to say it, like this, not this contract, but I know for sure
- 20:48that at least two of you, remember this?
- 20:51When sir, lucious signed his last contract, which I'm
- 20:55assuming this next thing is an extension.
- 20:58Does anybody else remember the seminal moment for moment for
- 21:01track and field because I was watching college baseball, and
- 21:05across the ticker goes University of Florida signs,
- 21:11Mike Holloway to 10-year contract.
- 21:15Didn't even listen, it didn't say the details.
- 21:18That's right. That's right.
- 21:19That's right, buddy. Okay.
- 21:21Listen, a track coach is contract made the ticker, right?
- 21:27Because he signed a 10-year deal.
- 21:30Yeah, it could have been 10 years, three dollars.
- 21:32We obviously, we knew it wasn't right, but the point is, the
- 21:36point is to Clyde's to Clyde's point, right?
- 21:40It was ESPN. Also read as newsworthy.
- 21:47Absolutely. You know why?
- 21:48Because guess what? Somebody in the sport of track
- 21:50and Field's being Treated like an adult.
- 21:52It's a 10-year contract that's not ridiculous.
- 21:54In any other sport it's ridiculous as hell and track,
- 21:57right? But it's listen, if somebody
- 21:58signed Charlie Weis, signed a 10-year contract extension with
- 22:01Notre Dame after a year where they 18 damn games.
- 22:04Yeah, that's right. And that will call it the, or
- 22:14the excitement that ran through the east in the west prelim.
- 22:19When the announcement was made about my contract, Yeah, yeah.
- 22:22Yeah. Like literally for it was
- 22:26announced like right before the meat started it when the East.
- 22:30Yeah. And at least 100 people
- 22:32congratulated me that at least, if not more.
- 22:35And that's that's where I'm at. And this this has to start in
- 22:40the first world problems part of this, right?
- 22:44Yeah, no, I'm gonna say it again.
- 22:46Track athletes until your money becomes news.
- 22:51Worthy. Just understand you're all
- 22:52underpaid. Every last one, all of you are
- 22:56underpaid. So oh, it's not a date.
- 22:58It is underpaid. Shelly-Ann.
- 23:00Fraser prices under pay your Allison, been underpaid.
- 23:03You guys weren't all underpaid and you know, you are because
- 23:06ain't nobody talking about how much money you think so client?
- 23:10This, this gets back to the first point I made.
- 23:14When Nolan Ryan was the first, okay?
- 23:19I mean, I would love for somebody to ask him what his
- 23:23mindset was when he trotted out there to throw that first pitch
- 23:28after that. And out that contract was
- 23:30signed, right? Because he had to feel the
- 23:34stairs. In the back of his neck, he had
- 23:37to feel when he walked out in that Stadium people going.
- 23:41All right. This is going to be the
- 23:43ultimate. This is going to blow up in his
- 23:46face. This is going to be something.
- 23:49That you know Major League Baseball will regret for the
- 23:52rest of time, right? We'll all be here remembering uh
- 23:57remember that do they paid a million dollars look at him now
- 24:00right 44 years four and a half million right?
- 24:04Trout makes four and a half million every four minutes.
- 24:07So so the point is this Who is going to be that so bolt?
- 24:13Was that person next bullet? I mean, but I mean only only
- 24:18kind of though because no one knows bolts contract for real.
- 24:23Well. Exactly.
- 24:24Yeah. Nobody knew what Karl's contract
- 24:26was. Yep.
- 24:27Exactly. So now it's speaking.
- 24:29You're going to my point now. Mr. Rivera so basically we know
- 24:36that both signed a lifetime contract, we don't know what it
- 24:39was for, we don't know. I know that Carl has a lifetime
- 24:42contract, right? We don't know what it's for,
- 24:46right? We know.
- 24:47So these are things that how our young athletes going to Aspire
- 24:53to something if they don't know what it is, what is it?
- 25:00What is the Pinnacle and to your point about the eyes on Nolan
- 25:06Ryan or what? He must have felt like and all
- 25:08that does that. Well, you know what, the fact
- 25:10that he could handle that is what makes him one of the
- 25:12all-time greats. Absolutely.
- 25:14If you're the type of athlete who can't handle everybody
- 25:18knowing what you make as if that's some kind of added
- 25:21pressure will maybe that'll be the reason that you don't have
- 25:24the mentality to become what you could become in this sport like
- 25:29that. You got to The way from the fear
- 25:30of that like, man that can't be it thing that can't be the
- 25:35issue. And so that I would say, the
- 25:37client, the track world makes you feel that everything, the
- 25:43culture it's a cultural thing. Yes.
- 25:46Well, speaking of the cultural thing is kind of the crab in the
- 25:50buckets thing, right? You don't want you to make a lot
- 25:52of money because I'm not making absolutely.
- 25:54I want you to see now here with me and suffer with me.
- 25:57Yeah, you know, and and again, we have to start At the Elder
- 26:00has to be something done to stop with, you know, as cutter calls
- 26:06it. The broke fresh broke, rational
- 26:09side of this, right? We have to stop the gear deals.
- 26:12We have to stop the bonus deals. We have to stop paying people.
- 26:16Twenty five thousand dollars a year to represent your company.
- 26:20Yeah. Right.
- 26:21Because it's just wrong. I mean, $25.
- 26:24You can make that work at McDonald's.
- 26:27Make more Network in the mood. I know, right?
- 26:29So I don't care what disciplinary because we got 21
- 26:32events, right? I don't care.
- 26:33What disciplinary. If you're the tenth best on the
- 26:37globe at whatever it is that you do, right?
- 26:41You're paid extremely well. Except in track and field.
- 26:45Yeah. I give the governor and all of
- 26:48Cowboys Nation a lot of flack. Okay?
- 26:52Yes, you do. A deal where he gets paid forty
- 26:56million dollars a year now. Whether he learns that or not
- 27:02he's not overpaid. He's paid with the market will
- 27:05bear him. Yeah.
- 27:07Because he got 40 million, everybody else is like, hold on.
- 27:11Hold up. Yes.
- 27:13That dude got 40 baby? Yeah, I'll pay me.
- 27:16You're absolutely so. What?
- 27:19Well, that's why, that's why the agents and, and the lawyers who
- 27:23put together and the NBA Players Association.
- 27:27Listen I'm a I'm not going to And up but they get a standing
- 27:30ovation. Okay?
- 27:31Because this is what I need everybody.
- 27:32Understand. The NBA Players Association,
- 27:38they applauded the NBA commissioner and all them to go
- 27:41get bigger and better TV deals. And then they hit them, straight
- 27:45across the face and the collective bargaining agreement,
- 27:47and I need everybody to know this who doesn't know this by
- 27:51collective bargaining agreement, the NBA owners are required to
- 27:57spend 55 percent of the total revenue.
- 28:00What that comes from folks is transparency.
- 28:03Go back, watch the show. Talked about what is missing the
- 28:06most in the sport of track and field is transparency, right?
- 28:09But what that comes from is transparency, they are required
- 28:13to spend 55 percent of the total gross.
- 28:17Revenue on players, that is why there are dudes in the NBA who
- 28:21make 40 million dollars a year, who you don't know, Because look
- 28:26I it happened this year, the Oklahoma City Thunder have a
- 28:30really young team. They did a bunch of tanking,
- 28:32right? And they're preparing to be good
- 28:33again, right? But right now on the roster, the
- 28:37guys they have, they're so young and there's limits to how much
- 28:41you can pay younger players that they had to pay a guy 46 million
- 28:44dollars because he was standing there.
- 28:49They had to pay him 46 million dollars to be in compliance with
- 28:52NBA rules. So if anybody's wondering what
- 28:55we're talking about is true, like hello?
- 28:57This is it when I say again High Tides, raise all boats.
- 29:02If everybody knows what everybody makes and track nobody
- 29:05can be completely broken anymore.
- 29:08No shoe company can come at Clyde and say we're going to
- 29:10give you zero dollars and zero cents but we're going to give
- 29:14you some really nice kit. The bi-level kit at that and
- 29:17we're not going to give you the super spikes because you got to
- 29:20earn that. They can't do that anymore.
- 29:26Right think they wouldn't be able to continue to cut
- 29:29veterans, like like Allyson Felix to sign the new young hot
- 29:33thing, right? But still want, the still want
- 29:35the veteran Allan Felix to go out Allyson Felix to go win us
- 29:38medals, right? They couldn't do those things.
- 29:41If we were professional. But we're not and this is the
- 29:45thing we keep trying to get people to get it's like a floor
- 29:50is required collective bargaining is a is required
- 29:54transparency on both sides. We can't ask for the meat
- 29:57directors to tell us how much money they make if we're not
- 30:01willing to tell the public how much we make.
- 30:07Right there with you. So and putting it in different
- 30:11terms, same concept thing about empowering the athletes to
- 30:15advocate for themselves because if they don't know what to ask
- 30:18for because they don't know. So they think that these gear
- 30:21deals are okay and they get screwed by the taxes and then
- 30:24they still don't make that bonus money.
- 30:27And so you're super duper broke And now you've been running for
- 30:30nothing and you should have just been taking that regular job or
- 30:33whatever it is on top of the, because I had this conversation
- 30:39at the national meet this year was well, coach.
- 30:43I think that if this works the way it's supposed to, I should
- 30:48be able to make this with this agent and then I'll be okay.
- 30:53And I was like, whoa. Hold on, hold on a minute.
- 30:58That's very lofty. And that that was a low number
- 31:01that the student-athlete said already and I said that's lofty.
- 31:05I said you bless you but this isn't going to happen this way.
- 31:10I just need you to know that, you know, and he didn't
- 31:12understand and I was like, we're gonna have a conversation.
- 31:15This is not the right time or other night, right environment.
- 31:18So enjoy the rest of this meet we'll talk later.
- 31:21I'll get you to somebody but it's when we blindfold everybody
- 31:25Now that we have this perception, right?
- 31:27That's why we get these recruiting emails from these.
- 31:3213, s hurdlers. And we don't realize that it
- 31:33says, 100 hurdles, I'm sorry, 15 second hundred meter hurdle or
- 31:39is. And we, yeah, you get where I'm
- 31:40going because there's this blindness to it and man
- 31:46knowledge is power. If I can't say that any louder
- 31:48to everybody regarding this situation, knowledge is power,
- 31:51and don't be ashamed. If you got paid, we're it loud
- 31:55and proud because you're going to roll in it, right?
- 31:58You going to buy a new car stereo car.
- 32:14All right. Well, with that being said,
- 32:17someone who definitely wash it. I shouldn't say definitely cause
- 32:21I don't know, someone who has a contract and is worked.
- 32:23Well, Being prosperous thus far, miss you Lamar Rojas and her
- 32:31name is come up very quickly and very aggressively recently in
- 32:34the news because her triple jump, Mark is not being.
- 32:39Given long jump, long jump bikes, not getting credited
- 32:44because of that. Let's let's grow that
- 32:46conversation. I'm throwing that out there for
- 32:49you all as the basis. I want to start on this one
- 32:55course he said, okay. if it's a rule, it should always be a
- 33:03rule. So when she showed up to the
- 33:06meat too long jump, and triple jump shoes, somebody should have
- 33:10said, well, here's my little thing, and the thickness of
- 33:14these shoes is too high. Therefore, you can't jump in
- 33:17them. When I'm not going to do, and
- 33:19what I'm not going to accept is I jump really far and the meat
- 33:23goes and the meat goes on, and the Mark goes up and I get
- 33:27ballyhooed for it and I get paid for it and I'm qualified for
- 33:31worlds. And then the week before
- 33:33world's, somebody lobs a protest, all of a sudden, and
- 33:40there's a obscure rule about thickness of shoes that nobody
- 33:45has discussed and all of a sudden, now, my mark doesn't
- 33:47count. Yeah, no, we're not doing that.
- 33:50That's not a thing. And again, again, in no, other
- 33:56profession. Is that a thing, right?
- 33:59Look, there are parameters for the skates.
- 34:02You can use in hockey and there's parameters, believe it
- 34:05or not. For the amount of curvature, you
- 34:06allowed that you are allowed to create in your hockey stick,
- 34:10right? So at no point in time can you
- 34:13go out on the water and ice for their legal?
- 34:15Stick score goal and not somebody.
- 34:16Not say hey, that's Sticks illegal.
- 34:19We check it. We throw you out.
- 34:21There's rules about how much pine tar you can have on a bat.
- 34:25There's rules about everything, right, but what ain't ever
- 34:28happened and no other real sport is we go back retroactively and
- 34:31say nah, that didn't count No other real sport no shot.
- 34:38That's like saying the Golden Goal that happened.
- 34:40In the world cup doesn't happen because like you got on illegal
- 34:42boots and the ball was over inflated.
- 34:44I'm sorry what? Like this is insanity and again,
- 34:51only our sport would ever be on board with taking away one of
- 34:56our best shining stars in an event.
- 35:03On some obscure made-up technicality.
- 35:08Are we serious with this one? Like this is not a thing but it
- 35:16isn't track because we love to over officiate ourselves on
- 35:21erroneous and non perfunctory things.
- 35:27We should go next because everything I have to say is
- 35:29petty. Okay, this topic Force me to go
- 35:40find the actual document. There is an athletic shoe
- 35:44regulation document. And I think each one of you need
- 35:50to see this document because there's some rules and
- 35:53regulations in this document it while it was that I say is wild
- 36:00in it. Absolutely.
- 36:02And there's one in particular, there's a, there's a section
- 36:06called availability. And I'm not going to, I'm not
- 36:10even gonna speak on it. Oh no.
- 36:12Yes, you are. You're here to educate.
- 36:16Well, it basically says, if you are wearing a shoe, right?
- 36:20And you shoe that shoe needs to be made available, All right.
- 36:27No, yeah, that was the devil's. A big deal with the Nike shoe
- 36:29last year. Yeah.
- 36:30What's the big deal that started with the Nike marathon?
- 36:33Oh shoot. That's why as a matter of fact,
- 36:35that's where that's where the thickness started to write.
- 36:39So that, that in itself for us, that understand track and field,
- 36:47and that understand the elite side of track and field.
- 36:51That is an absolute joke, okay? So I'll leave it.
- 36:58But this is an issue, okay? In the long jump field events
- 37:06except the triple jump, the maximum thickness can be 20 cm
- 37:13in the triple jump. It can be 25.
- 37:15Wait, mm. Mm.
- 37:18Mm. Happy CM would be awesome.
- 37:23Yeah. Yes.
- 37:27So We're talking about an issue of 5, mm, right?
- 37:34That was the difference between this young lady, getting to
- 37:38compete at the world championships in the long jump.
- 37:42Which anybody? That is a fan of Rojas wants to
- 37:47see that. Okay, well, I want to see the
- 37:50double at a major championship, probably, as bad as I want.
- 37:52See anything. What, what are we doing here?
- 37:58So we're talking about another opportunity.
- 38:02To put seeds in the stands to put, put butts in seats to watch
- 38:08this young lady. Go after the long jump and
- 38:10triple jump, right? I mean, anyone that's watching
- 38:14this young woman knows she's a seven-meter jumper All day every
- 38:19day, does it? Matter long, jump, triple, jump
- 38:22spikes, Sprint, spikes. It doesn't matter if she is that
- 38:25good, okay? And yet, we have a technicality,
- 38:31it's gotten in the way of perhaps.
- 38:35A group and the group of individuals that were thinking
- 38:40about this, that have that follow track and field.
- 38:43And our bought tickets to see this young lady compete.
- 38:48Okay, this is what happens when you make rules.
- 38:55That complicate things you're talking about, the long jump in
- 39:02the triple jump. Okay.
- 39:06I mean, I could compare this to some some of the rules that were
- 39:09try to throw in the horizontal. I remember there was a point in
- 39:13time where the approach couldn't be longer than 40 meters.
- 39:17Yep. And that turned out to be an
- 39:21absolute, the Buckle and absolute debacle.
- 39:26Because there were a few people that complain that their indoor
- 39:31Runway wasn't long enough. Okay, so then you go to meets
- 39:36where the indoor Runway was long enough and you're like, what are
- 39:42we doing here? So, I think it's unfortunate for
- 39:47this young lady. I think it's unfortunate for
- 39:50track fans in general. That they're not going to see
- 39:54her go out there and do what we know that she can do and it's
- 40:00probably going to be a sideshow, it's going to turn out to be a
- 40:02sideshow because somebody is going to complain about it.
- 40:05Somebody's going to bring it up in a press conference or
- 40:07whatever and you're getting away from the sport.
- 40:15Think about what a steals from us, right.
- 40:17We don't get to see Rojas versus mahom bro.
- 40:20Yes, oh, wait, wait, wait, hold on.
- 40:23Okay, hold on for non-metric speaking audience, but we don't
- 40:28speak to those people. Oh my God!
- 40:30Stop it! It is less than two-tenths of a
- 40:34knee. Will bow people alone.
- 40:43Point one, nine seven point, one nine, seven of an inch of an
- 40:50inch. I'm going to make the governor
- 40:52and The Mariano very upset in the beginning but I think I'm
- 40:58going to bring them on home again.
- 41:02In sport, sometimes we have rules.
- 41:07The people don't agree. I don't know if this rule is a
- 41:14rule, I don't know if this rule is backed up by any actual
- 41:19science. I'm going to assume that it is
- 41:22and 5. Mm, could be some dramatic.
- 41:26Competitive Advantage. It's a rule.
- 41:30It's on the books. You're a professional your coach
- 41:35or professionals. Your agents are professionals.
- 41:38Know the rules. Don't let this.
- 41:40Happened to you. That's my first piece of this.
- 41:45Is it a stupid rule? Probably the Tuck Rule was a
- 41:50stupid rule, but it was a rule and because the Tuck Rule was a
- 41:56stupid rule, but in the books, Tom Brady, never fumbled the
- 41:59ball now, it doesn't matter what we think about it. 20 years
- 42:04later, the rule was the rule, the call was accurate, it is
- 42:08what it is now. I'm personally disappointed a
- 42:13little pissed off at. I'm not going to get to watch,
- 42:16Mister Rojas, dude, long jump. Because personally, I think you
- 42:19can put her out there barefoot and she still going to get a
- 42:21medal, okay? So since our sport is famous for
- 42:27making up rules. As we go along from time to time
- 42:30I say you put her out there barefoot, you let her jump a
- 42:34qualification Mark and we go on about our business.
- 42:38But here's the thing, and I don't have any evidence for
- 42:42this. But I'd be willing to put up
- 42:45some money. I want to know where the protest
- 42:50came from, I want to know who filed it.
- 42:53And if it came out of Germany, I'm not going to be surprised.
- 42:57Let's just say that. Because listen, it's real late
- 43:04for us to be finding this out. Because if I'm Rojas in her camp
- 43:09and you told me this 23 months ago or even 30 days ago, I'm
- 43:14pretty certain. I could have found a track and
- 43:16gone and junked what? I need to jump, but you drop
- 43:19this on me now. If the Germans submitted the
- 43:24protest I need to know that feels like a very teddy thing to
- 43:29do and therefore I want Petty exposure whoever's responsible
- 43:34for this because the double was absolutely something.
- 43:39I was going to be in the stands for and now I got to tell you.
- 43:42I'm very disinterested in the women's long time.
- 43:47I have only a very few things to say about this is just wrong on
- 43:52so many levels. And at the end of the day that
- 43:56we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot, we have an absolute
- 43:59superstar in our sport to be going to make sit in the stands
- 44:02or watch him or hotel. Or well, she probably be gone
- 44:05because the triple jump first. So she probably just leave, you
- 44:08know, but to have her not be a part of this competition on such
- 44:11a thing as just not right. So Shame One World Athletics.
- 44:16Again, listen, we have all been to Oregon many many times.
- 44:20A lot of us know our way around that facility since the triple
- 44:23jump is first, I petition that the MS.
- 44:27Rojas goes out there, breaks her own world record in the triple
- 44:30jump, and then some of us somehow some way, slide her out
- 44:34there for a long jump. And just take one, even if they
- 44:38toss her out the stadium. Just take one because this is BS
- 44:43at snare. Going to happen.
- 44:44It can happen to know what can happen.
- 44:46There's a lot of that Stadium, make it happen.
- 44:49So yeah, king of pettiness. Do we remember?
- 44:55I don't know how many of us were on Twitter when a certain coach
- 45:03blurted out that SIDS that race, she ran at the American track
- 45:07League was not legal. Do you remember who did that?
- 45:10It was those bowls cups. Okay, so okay, you, you are onto
- 45:23something. If you are
- 45:46You know what? I'm here for.
- 45:47I'm here. For Rojas going to a meet this
- 45:50weekend. Jumping like 710.
- 45:52Just to spite and then declining to enter.
- 45:57I need something appropriately. Betty to match her being tossed
- 46:02out. Absolutely need to see the
- 46:03bullet in America. When we file a protest, you got
- 46:06to sign your name to it. I want to see the protest.
- 46:09I want to see the email. If it's got a at Germany
- 46:13dot-gov. On it.
- 46:14I want to see it. He said that Germany.
- 46:16Dad go. We should have those at lane.
- 46:22Or I'm not going to out the other NCAA institutions.
- 46:27Host a all comers meet. Hey, So so wow.
- 46:36Wow. All right, so a little more, I
- 46:40mean, not even, even more. Another entertaining topic
- 46:45specifically this time of year is the portal.
- 46:49The question is, is the portal good bad or indifferent
- 46:55endeavor? Yeah, I will go first two years
- 47:00because I know Cloud was going to tell me to go first.
- 47:04He was Good in some terms because now
- 47:30the athletes have the freedom to do you not to be you know,
- 47:33strong-armed into staying in places they don't want to be.
- 47:37I think it's bad in that. Now the athlete can just get
- 47:41angry and jump in the portal. Because what coach said you had
- 47:44a bad practice, right? I think it's eventually going to
- 47:48hurt the smaller institutions and two ways one, because the
- 47:53people in the portal, no matter, You know, they'll take a smaller
- 47:58scholarship to go to a bigger School than versus going to one
- 48:01of the smaller schools just because they want to be
- 48:02successful. And it on the other side of the
- 48:05two is if you're at a smaller school it said happy comes to
- 48:09you at 47 seconds and runs 45. They're going in the portal and
- 48:14so it just kind of a catch-22 on both sides, but I think the
- 48:18freedom of the athlete being able to choose where they want
- 48:21to go to school versus, you know, when the password, the
- 48:24coach could would allow them to talk to her.
- 48:26Two dudes that they want to leave.
- 48:29I think that's a good part of the portal, but make no doubt
- 48:33about it. The portal is here, it's alive.
- 48:36It's hot and it's it's here to stay.
- 48:40It is old on, so lucious. Will you please State what your
- 48:43initial feeling was about the portal?
- 48:45So that it done - okay? A lot better and I watch, you
- 49:02know, and we were still good, but I'm like, if I don't play
- 49:05this game, I'm not gonna be able to keep up, so I had to play the
- 49:10game. There was no doubt about that
- 49:12because initially, I thought this is, this is going to be
- 49:13bad. And let's go, we talked about
- 49:15this, the high schoolers are once again screwed here.
- 49:18Yeah, right. Yeah, definitely Boomer.
- 49:21The Late Bloomer. You got?
- 49:22Well, I got this high school kid.
- 49:24Just ran 46 5. He hasn't been Signed yet but
- 49:28the portals about to get hot. So I'm going to wait on the
- 49:30portal and then there's a guy in the port of the runs 45 50, I'm
- 49:33taking him. That's just that's the way it's
- 49:37going to work, but you're right big-league.
- 49:39I wanted nothing to do with the portal, to begin to change my
- 49:42mind quickly. No, yes!
- 49:44That that speaks to Sir lucious's ability to adapt and
- 49:48evolve because that's my point. The portal is A necessary evil
- 49:55portal is Darwinism. The portal is America.
- 50:00It is what it is. You're unhappy and go shop.
- 50:07Is it in your best interest? It might be it.
- 50:09Most definitely is not for most of them, but we celebrate
- 50:12delusional people in America. This is what we do.
- 50:17So I'm I've always been from day one.
- 50:20A huge advocate of the portal. Because he's right, I have the
- 50:26freedom to recruit the best class in school history and then
- 50:31dip out to a new job, then the kid should have the right to do
- 50:35what they want to do. And they feel they need to do
- 50:37it. I wish they were better
- 50:40educated. I wish they were less delusional
- 50:43because the truth of the matter is, the vast majority of them,
- 50:46don't find what they're seeking, they don't find the better coach
- 50:50for more money at the school. They've always wanted to go to
- 50:53Now, you might get one of those three, you might get to school.
- 50:57You always wanted. You may get the coach, you
- 51:01always thought you deserved you damn sure, probably not gonna
- 51:05get the money but, you know, if you want to put yourself in
- 51:09there and Shop your options, it's America.
- 51:13You go right ahead and do that, and hopefully it works out for
- 51:16you. I just think it's a necessary
- 51:18part of the business. It's not going away this year.
- 51:21They've implemented the the, for our sport, at least the rule
- 51:25where you had to be in there by July 1st or there are He
- 51:30consequences than going in there later.
- 51:32I don't even like that. I don't, because last I checked,
- 51:35the, the coaching Carousel is still spinning so, you know, as
- 51:40long as the carousel is spinning, the athlete should be
- 51:42able to do what they want to do that.
- 51:44That part of it is going to get challenged by someone because
- 51:47just going to be happy to stands up and says, and gets a lawyer
- 51:50to say it for them. Well, why is it okay for my
- 51:52coach to announced on July 5th at their?
- 51:55Leave me. But if I'm not in the portal by
- 51:57the first, and I can't compete, if I go to another, Solution.
- 52:01Somebody's going to say speaking from experience obviously let's
- 52:05not I'm not going to be naive to not say this out loud.
- 52:09There is a waiver that can be signed for the athletes to get
- 52:13in. After the first it just has to
- 52:15be approved by the compliance in the and that 80 you would think.
- 52:20And you would hope that that Administration would fully
- 52:23support without wavering that moose.
- 52:26So that is there, that isn't it. Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 52:31And I have a point for that after is The Khan one of the
- 52:37bigger cons and what have the repercussions was?
- 52:39Call it that for the student-athletes to enter the
- 52:42portal is that there's quote unquote retaliation sometimes by
- 52:46the coach, by the adult and situation, right?
- 52:48And you're going to feel some type of way because you do take
- 52:50it personal, okay, whatever. But should the athlete feel the
- 52:53same way when you have applied to a different job, the
- 52:57retaliation I will not expose the coach in the program and all
- 53:06this stuff but here's a real thing that happened coach gets a
- 53:10text message says You know, sir I appreciate, you know, what
- 53:17you're trying to do for me, but me and my family, think it's
- 53:20best. If I go weigh my options in the
- 53:22portal, if I choose to come back, I still get my money
- 53:26right. You want to go shop for a new
- 53:30situation and think that the coach is going to hold your
- 53:33spot. No, sir, no ma'am.
- 53:37That is not a thing, that's bad business.
- 53:39No one would do that. So that's not retaliation.
- 53:43That's a mutually. You know, we divorced.
- 53:46You told me we breaking up. We're breaking up.
- 53:48I'm not gonna hold your spot on the couch which means that like,
- 53:51I'm not gonna let you go hang out with a dude down the street
- 53:54for 10 days. I come back home I doing that
- 53:57right now. You know, so again, it's America
- 54:01go shopping. You want something don't
- 54:03complain. If you buy them, if you buy
- 54:05something bad, like it is what it is.
- 54:10So, I mean, this this has been something that, you know, I know
- 54:17for Clyde and for myself, you know, being on the other side.
- 54:22And when I say the other side, you know, it's one thing when
- 54:26your phone is always ringing. And right, it's another thing,
- 54:33I'm sorry. Now was a back that was a fact.
- 54:42It's a fact, right? Is kids want to win
- 54:46championships. They want Rings, right?
- 54:50They know where to go. Okay, now for us, I what I what
- 54:56I feel like what I feel like Clyde and myself have to do is
- 55:01that we have to understand how to be enterprising.
- 55:08And how to be cunning and how to be smart and more than anything
- 55:14else. My Success is far as a portal is
- 55:18concerned is based on how closely and how deeply I can vet
- 55:25the kids that I'm going after, okay?
- 55:29And I have to listen very, very carefully, okay?
- 55:33When I ask that question. Okay, so why did you get on the
- 55:37portal? Well, you know, my coach my
- 55:40coach and I just didn't see eye to eye and this, and this, and
- 55:44that and old, you know, it just, it just didn't work out for me.
- 55:48I'm sorry, that's not good enough.
- 55:50Okay, that's not good enough. I need to know what I'm dealing
- 55:56with and then not only that, if I know the person in question,
- 56:01I'm going to pick up the phone and say, Hey, What Can you tell
- 56:04me about athlete X. Okay.
- 56:08And I have to get to a point where I feel comfortable.
- 56:13That the kid that just did something or just decided to
- 56:17leave one program isn't going to come here and wreck my program.
- 56:22All right, so all of these things have to be in place, all
- 56:27of these things have to be vetted.
- 56:28I have to be very aware and I have to be very versed on who
- 56:34these individuals are history of the program.
- 56:36There are at what kind of training they did.
- 56:40You know, whether they saw eye-to-eye, I need to know.
- 56:42I need to have document okay on these athletes is your Suma NG
- 56:49they all have baggage you're just assuming that that is fact
- 56:54okay but inside of all that and we're and I'm seeing it
- 56:59happening with our football program right now, is that In,
- 57:05you know, on a lesser level, you can build a championship team in
- 57:10one year, and then that championship team can disappear
- 57:14in one year. Right?
- 57:17So the portal has created a situation where you can get
- 57:22success really quickly and you can be in the dumps, the next
- 57:27year because we're still depending on 18 to 22 year olds,
- 57:36all right? To make the right decisions,
- 57:39right? And we're hoping that okay, this
- 57:43is your second chance, right? This is your Second chance to
- 57:46make things, right? You're going to come here,
- 57:48you're going to be a good citizen.
- 57:50You're going to take care of business, you're going to listen
- 57:52to your coach, right? And that's never a given, it's
- 57:57never a given, you know. So I look at it as something.
- 58:01That is a very useful tool but you better know how to use it,
- 58:06because it can literally destroy your program, you know?
- 58:09And and I would dare say that we're seeing if we're paying
- 58:14attention, right? We're seeing situations play out
- 58:18right in front of us, where the portal has probably been a
- 58:20problem instead of been a, being a solution, okay?
- 58:25So speaking from a coach's perspective, if you know how to
- 58:29use it. It can be great.
- 58:35Well, this is, this is Ben. I actually feel like I hit a
- 58:41home run with this topic. I, you guys are amazing and I
- 58:46went last because I obviously have a by sport perspective and
- 58:52I think it'll be helpful everything that you guys have
- 58:56said, is absolutely 100% true. But here's here's some things
- 59:00that people really, really need to understand about the portal.
- 59:03First of all. You were all raised in the
- 59:06coaching world, where like you put together a daily practice,
- 59:10you put together a weekly practice, you put together a
- 59:12monthly practice, you put together a seasonal practice and
- 59:15then you got a global view of a four-year plan for the kids,
- 59:19right? Yeah.
- 59:20Take that one and don't do that one anymore.
- 59:23Don't don't do the four-year plan for any kid may be having
- 59:26in your head. Don't spit, don't spend the time
- 59:29to actually like write it down and like, get you and that kid
- 59:32to get indoctrinated on it. Because here's the deal with the
- 59:35portal. You guys are together you year
- 59:39by year at best. Everything is going to be real.
- 59:42Like it's like one year renewable scholarships, right?
- 59:45Like, our relationship is going to be renewed, literally every
- 59:49year whether we're going to continue to go together or not.
- 59:55And and to the governor's Point, let me say this about the
- 59:59portal, okay? The the best people in the
- 1:00:02portal are either the ones that came to you as two stars and
- 1:00:08three stars and you've made four or five stars.
- 1:00:11They're not leaving you and the ones who came to will say, Prime
- 1:00:19Steak University as four stars and five stars and their, and
- 1:00:24their disgruntled, right? And so now they're in the portal
- 1:00:28and now you have a shot at them because they're disgruntled
- 1:00:32Right? So the best ones in there,
- 1:00:34they're passing each other, the the newly minted, four and five
- 1:00:38stars. And the I was a foreign 5 Star a
- 1:00:42year and a half ago, but my marks in college, don't say so
- 1:00:46right. Like that's that that's the
- 1:00:48sliding scale and and to the governor's point, right?
- 1:00:53It's that second group that you can absolutely create a monster
- 1:00:57team at a non power 5 school, if you know how to vet Through
- 1:01:02those kids and find find the right thing for them because
- 1:01:06their talent doesn't go away. Right there, talent doesn't go
- 1:01:11away. Yeah.
- 1:01:12If they want to talk what he/she sure because some of them just
- 1:01:16don't want to talk like that, you know, like they like to go
- 1:01:21from the from the frying pan Into the Fire.
- 1:01:23Like, you know what, they wrote, it wasn't really good for me for
- 1:01:26Prime Steak at Prime Steak. You were so Ima leave and I'm
- 1:01:28gonna go to filet mignon knowledge, right?
- 1:01:32And it's like you're still the seventh best person on the team.
- 1:01:36We're going to be mad and you're still not getting any attention.
- 1:01:39So you're still Going to give you better when if you had just
- 1:01:42gone to the governor's institution, he would have
- 1:01:45treated you like Prime Steak and you might have gotten the
- 1:01:47attention. You needed to actually be good
- 1:01:49enough to one day, get a contract, but that is for them
- 1:01:51to figure out. And, to clients point, it is
- 1:01:53darwinistic. But let me throw up, let me
- 1:01:56throw a wrench in there for y'all that doesn't exist in
- 1:01:59track but does exist in baseball.
- 1:02:03The rule for the date is the same in baseball as it is and
- 1:02:07track July first. Anybody on this panel, want to
- 1:02:10tell the rest of the world. When the draft is after July
- 1:02:131st, July 17, July 17th, 18th and 19th, right?
- 1:02:21So you love your coach, you hit in the three hole, that's the
- 1:02:25best hole for those of you who don't really love baseball.
- 1:02:27You're the best hitter, right? You play shortstop, that's the
- 1:02:30most Prime position, right? And you're at, you know, medium
- 1:02:35level Tech. No better yet.
- 1:02:39You're a Prime Steak University, right?
- 1:02:45And and your school has recruited the best shortstop in
- 1:02:49the country. He is going to be in the draft,
- 1:02:52he's going to get drafted and you don't have to worry about it
- 1:02:56because this is your spot, right?
- 1:03:01Stead young man's agent. Can't Make a Deal.
- 1:03:04The money ain't right. Unbeknownst to everybody else in
- 1:03:08the country because this just wasn't seen now because you
- 1:03:11don't get in the portal because why would you get in the portal?
- 1:03:13You're the starting shortstop, not a power 5 school.
- 1:03:16You're that guy, right? You your spot is most solid of
- 1:03:20anybody on the team now, the super star shortstop from high
- 1:03:24school is now not going to be drafted.
- 1:03:29He's coming to school. You didn't get in the portal.
- 1:03:36Now. Because there is no media
- 1:03:39transfers in baseball you can mid-year transfer and track.
- 1:03:42You can't make your transfer in baseball, be eligible, right?
- 1:03:46So now all of a sudden you have competition for your spot and
- 1:03:52this ain't the NBA where we got Subs in middle of the game.
- 1:03:54If you lose your shortstop, your shortstop job in the fall.
- 1:03:58You're either going to play second base of, you're not
- 1:04:00playing or you can play Left Field, whatever it is.
- 1:04:03You ain't who you used to be and you ain't who you used to be
- 1:04:07because Couldn't get in the portal.
- 1:04:10Right? Because you didn't get in the
- 1:04:11portal, because why would you? But your whole life can change
- 1:04:1516 days after the portal deadline, unbeknownst to you
- 1:04:18have nothing to do with you, right.
- 1:04:22And these are the kind of holes that are still in the Portal
- 1:04:26game problems. Right?
- 1:04:28You know, I agree with Clyde like listen, I don't necessarily
- 1:04:32think the portal was the greatest idea.
- 1:04:34I think it was a better idea to pay the athletes.
- 1:04:36But that's that's neither here, nor there at the end of A, the
- 1:04:40portal is here, we already know, nothing is going backwards.
- 1:04:43The portal is here to stay. If we have the portal and you
- 1:04:46can now transfer from Texas, to Texas Tech to Texas A&M, right?
- 1:04:50So we don't have like the interstate or the inner
- 1:04:53conference bias these anymore, right?
- 1:04:56If all that's true. Why do we have a portal date?
- 1:05:01Like, why, like why? Why?
- 1:05:02Why? Why is July 1st one is because
- 1:05:06it's because of just what you said, the adsr trying to find a
- 1:05:09way to protect the coaches. Yeah, so that that's all that,
- 1:05:12you know, because that was the whole thing with the whole thing
- 1:05:14with the portal was going on the 80s were like we have to put
- 1:05:17something in there, so Kathleen. So, you know, you're starting
- 1:05:22quarterback. Decides on April, on August 15,
- 1:05:27you know, August 1st. I don't want to be here anymore.
- 1:05:30He just jumps in Porton, he's gone.
- 1:05:32They're trying to run away. Scenarios because if you don't
- 1:05:34put the data in there, that's going to happen and maybe you
- 1:05:37should, maybe you should treat that kid better.
- 1:05:40But here's what I'm saying, July different July July 1st, is this
- 1:05:44is my this is my issue July 1st is an arbitrary date.
- 1:05:48Start of school is not. Hey, is that what you see what
- 1:05:50I'm saying? Like I get it, I understand your
- 1:05:54point. I was just best, but but
- 1:05:56wouldn't start of class be better first day of class in the
- 1:06:00fall semester. Okay.
- 1:06:02It be okay for Every other sport but football, right?
- 1:06:07Yeah, because that's all this is about, it's about football.
- 1:06:10Yes, and that's my point if because it's a I don't know what
- 1:06:13the football dates are, but trust me, they're set up so that
- 1:06:16your big-time Superstar cannot jump in the portal and be on
- 1:06:21somebody else's campus at the last minute.
- 1:06:23Mmm, that's that's not that's not an unfair thing to try to
- 1:06:27prevent. I'm okay, I get I get that was
- 1:06:30it? We do have to protect we got to
- 1:06:32protect the cash cow. But my issue is fine.
- 1:06:36Then you know what, spend an extra hour or two and make the
- 1:06:40deadlines make sense for each sport, because start of school
- 1:06:46for my sport makes perfect sense in the world.
- 1:06:50Makes all the sense in the world.
- 1:06:52Last I checked, I had till August first to sign incoming
- 1:06:55freshman. Hmm, so why do my people on my
- 1:06:58roster? Have to make a decision on the
- 1:07:00same day by the way, that their scholarship amounts for the next
- 1:07:04year, do Let's go like first now make no sense.
- 1:07:09Hey coach, just cut my scholarship.
- 1:07:11Well, I bet you're sorry here. How about this one?
- 1:07:17I got I got I got a real life thing that happened.
- 1:07:20USC hired. Their baseball coach on July
- 1:07:22third. I can't make that up.
- 1:07:27They hire that rope. Okay.
- 1:07:29And that is that's where the choose wavered situation comes
- 1:07:34in. Yeah,
- 1:07:57so, Around the May date. There was this big Scurry about
- 1:08:00oh my God, who's going in the portal?
- 1:08:02It did it. Did it hasn't been reported by
- 1:08:04this date and I'm like, I don't know what's going I missed
- 1:08:08because I don't I'm not in the portal but that that was those
- 1:08:10were questions that that are out there naoko.
- 1:08:13Other coaches were saying that, do you have to be in my
- 1:08:16distaste, so that even the coaches aren't sure what the
- 1:08:18dates are, there still a lot of confusion around those days?
- 1:08:22Let me put it that way. And then you and I had a
- 1:08:25conversation about about the July First date, right?
- 1:08:28Because the way it's worded. Did you have to be in by close
- 1:08:33of by close of business on June 30th and July.
- 1:08:36First was the end or was July 1st close of business and I
- 1:08:39didn't know the answer and that's why I asked you if you
- 1:08:41have to request to be in the portal by the end of business on
- 1:08:45the first, you got to actually bring in the portal what you had
- 1:08:48written request to be in the portal by the end of business on
- 1:08:52the first and it's just it's 5 p.m. right standard 5 p.m. where
- 1:08:57were you? And if you think about the
- 1:09:00timeline as it pertains to track, it's actually kind of
- 1:09:02crazy because I mean, let's be real if I'm on Marissa choose
- 1:09:08team and I'm unhappy, but I'm talented.
- 1:09:11I'm probably not going to tell her that.
- 1:09:13I'm going into the portal between conference in the end of
- 1:09:18ncaa's because rationally speaking, if I go into the
- 1:09:22portal, why the hell would she? Let me go compete at Nationals
- 1:09:25to shop my talent to? Anybody else?
- 1:09:28You see what I'm saying? So what Judd?
- 1:09:31June 10th or whatever? You are NCAA, has ended and the
- 1:09:36day the deadline is July 1st. They got three weeks to figure
- 1:09:39it out like right. Ah come on man.
- 1:09:42Like that's not what we'll see you in a speak.
- 1:09:45To be fair, the ones who were going in the portal.
- 1:09:48Probably knew in May, you just didn't get in there for exactly
- 1:09:51the reasons that you said to lose very few athletes out there
- 1:09:55that were making these decisions.
- 1:09:57You know after the NCAA Champions they were made, it
- 1:10:00just didn't go in until that to be champ, right?
- 1:10:03But that means on the flipside of that unless their coats said
- 1:10:06or something to them, after the NCAA me like I'm reducing your
- 1:10:10scholarship, then are jumping in the world for that reason.
- 1:10:13So but most of the people the one in the portal afternoon
- 1:10:15seeing me. They knew they were born in
- 1:10:16there before absolute. So I've got a, I've got a
- 1:10:19hypothetical that you know I mean, there's probably only one
- 1:10:24person qualified to answer this question.
- 1:10:33So I'm just going to throw this out there, okay?
- 1:10:36Because what the portal has done in, you know, again we've
- 1:10:41touched on this again, is that There was a point in time when
- 1:10:48the athlete coach relationship, whether it whether we like to
- 1:10:52admit it or not, it's emotional. We're dealing with human beings.
- 1:10:58There's feelings involved. There is much more of a, there's
- 1:11:02a, it's a connection. You have a situation where
- 1:11:06you're with an athlete for four years, for of their formative
- 1:11:10years, four years, where they're becoming girls Two women Boys to
- 1:11:17Men. You're dealing with a very, very
- 1:11:20specific particular period of their life, right?
- 1:11:26I feel the portal if you're not if as far as I'm concerned, if
- 1:11:31as a coach you are not willing to turn it on and turn it off.
- 1:11:39Meaning if that kid comes to your office or you get an email
- 1:11:43or you get a text message and hey this kid Jo X Y, and Z is
- 1:11:47now in the portal. Right.
- 1:11:51You now have a choice to let that affect you which in turn
- 1:11:56affects the rest of your squad. Because now you're pissed right
- 1:12:02now, you are emotional now, you are, you know, right?
- 1:12:06So I'm going to paint this this picture.
- 1:12:10Athlete ex comes to the coach says hey I was just say I have a
- 1:12:18family issue and I want to go back home and you know I'm
- 1:12:25getting in the portal because I want to go to a school closer to
- 1:12:28home. I'd like to finish the year out
- 1:12:31and oh by the way, this kid is a key to you winning a
- 1:12:35championship. What do you do?
- 1:13:10Situation where the coaches that that because even for me, it's
- 1:13:14not even about them being a key person so I can win a
- 1:13:17championship. Hmm.
- 1:13:18No, you know, if there's a I know that this is a real
- 1:13:22situation, I'm going to help this young person get better.
- 1:13:25Yeah, of course, I'm Alan compete know what?
- 1:13:28Because what, what, what I think.
- 1:13:30And I'm saying this because I feel like too many young men and
- 1:13:36women Feel like they can't come to the coach.
- 1:13:41Exactly, yeah. They feel whatever reason they
- 1:13:44feel like this is such a bad thing, right?
- 1:13:49That because it's my decision, right?
- 1:13:52To, to leave or whatever, then this Co he's going to hate me
- 1:13:57for the rest of my life. So, mmm.
- 1:14:00I'm just going to go ahead and and that and that's the bad of
- 1:14:03the port. Yes, it creates very quickly.
- 1:14:07I think that let's talk about one good thing that the portal
- 1:14:11has done or should do. It should make some of the
- 1:14:15coaches out there due to have not treated athletes.
- 1:14:18Well, treat them better. Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:20Yes, because if they don't, I will say I will say that going
- 1:14:23to be absolutely absolutely. So listen and again, we'll have
- 1:14:33to stop. Let me, let me throw this out
- 1:14:35there. It's funny because what what has
- 1:14:37happened now? A mid-major baseball.
- 1:14:39Is there is literally an acceptance now, that they are
- 1:14:42minor leagues for the, for the power 5, right?
- 1:14:45Like they go, they they develop guys and then they're going to
- 1:14:50lose them. And it's funny and baseball.
- 1:14:52What the loosening to is less. So to power fives and more sort
- 1:14:57of power files, and I hail deals, mmm-hmm right?
- 1:15:01Like, you know, there's a kid who's a Friday night starters,
- 1:15:03like that's the best picture for a very reputable non-power 5
- 1:15:11school and he's probably going to get drafted, right?
- 1:15:13So, but but just in case a very, very prominent SEC, School
- 1:15:22offered a kid, n IL deal for 125 Grand.
- 1:15:28Right. And he's one of several that
- 1:15:30they've they've thrown this money at, right?
- 1:15:32So of course, the kids like, yeah, coach about this portal.
- 1:15:36I'm gonna go ahead and head south.
- 1:15:39Yeah. And isn't that tampering in
- 1:15:42somewhere? because because howdy howdy
- 1:15:45howdy how do you know about the deal if he wasn't important Oh,
- 1:15:50oh no. He is definitely, definitely God
- 1:15:58in the portal. But when there's no question
- 1:16:01about listen tampering is being kind as to what's happening in
- 1:16:06basements, right? Like, you know, how we were
- 1:16:08talking that's a whole other discussion but like like the
- 1:16:11best kids get in the portal and then like, you get all excited.
- 1:16:14But the truth is they already had a destination, but let me
- 1:16:17tell you something, everybody in Small already has a destination,
- 1:16:21right? Like by the time, you see them
- 1:16:25in the portal. They are they've already limited
- 1:16:27themselves to three schools and they're weighing which bag they
- 1:16:30like better. If I gave, if I collected or
- 1:16:36donated to a pot of money, I put fifty to a hundred dollars into
- 1:16:42a pot of money for every time I've typed this text or email, I
- 1:16:47cannot talk to you if you are not in the transfer report,
- 1:16:51right? Okay.
- 1:16:52If I if I put that into a pot of money, we could all go someplace
- 1:16:55in a very nice weekend. I promise you that.
- 1:16:58Yeah, everything would be on me. Trust me.
- 1:17:01And you guys would have a phenomenal because that happens
- 1:17:04way too often. I cannot talk to you.
- 1:17:07I cannot hey, you know that's real because it happens to me.
- 1:17:10I am floored exactly right. Well, and I think that goes to
- 1:17:16like, it was brought up in the very first part of this, with
- 1:17:18the education, about the portal and the things that everything I
- 1:17:21did encompasses. You know, you can limit who you
- 1:17:25talk to because you have a comment box, you can give your
- 1:17:28email but not your phone number. You can give both, you know, you
- 1:17:32can withdraw without quote-unquote penalty to
- 1:17:36whatever parties stated. And it's just Just, you know, it
- 1:17:41can be a good thing because it's put well in theory.
- 1:17:45It was implemented so that when needed when necessary, the
- 1:17:49athletes can make a move but because we are of such a self
- 1:17:56centered self rewarding Society. It's trickled down into this,
- 1:18:01right? I mean, there is a young lady
- 1:18:03that was in the portal this year.
- 1:18:05It said, I only will speak to the school.
- 1:18:08Disc will miss school? Have a Day and I was like oh
- 1:18:12thank you. I don't have to compose an email
- 1:18:14to not have it responded to moving on and I appreciated
- 1:18:19that, you know, I had a parent. I didn't I'm going to assume
- 1:18:24either the phone number that was given was the parents number
- 1:18:27because the parent was going to deal with all of it and not
- 1:18:30overwhelm the student athlete. And the parents said, oh, that
- 1:18:33was a bad idea. I should have never put my phone
- 1:18:36number, never done that, right? And so said, It was like,
- 1:18:40listen, learn and I'm like, well, I hope you never have to
- 1:18:43use them lesson again, you know, with this specific child herbs
- 1:18:47to do not wait. So I mean in, especially in the
- 1:18:51current situation that I'm in, like, I see the good in it, I
- 1:18:56see where it can be bad, but I think with education, I mean,
- 1:19:01there's always gonna be a sneaky snake, right?
- 1:19:03We can't, we can't help that. That's always going to be happen
- 1:19:06or be a thing, but if we educate as to on the student part and on
- 1:19:10Coaches part maybe as Evolution occurs it evolves into a
- 1:19:15prettier thing or more. Congrats thing.
- 1:19:19I feel like the portal is like the internet.
- 1:19:21I said this one time when the show that the internet is one of
- 1:19:23the few things on this planet that's on man's top five
- 1:19:26inventions and man's five worst inventions.
- 1:19:29I think the portal is that way as it pertains to student
- 1:19:32athletes and student-athlete life on campus, right.
- 1:19:35It's definitely one of the top five things that's ever
- 1:19:37happened. Student-athletes, it's also one
- 1:19:39of the five worst There's no question.
- 1:19:42No horse. There's definitely unscrupulous
- 1:19:47coaches out there that are telling kids like that are
- 1:19:50inferring strongly to kids that they should get in the portal.
- 1:19:55Yeah. But the ones who were here,
- 1:19:56don't hear that well for sure. But I'm just saying I'm just
- 1:20:01saying like, hey, you got the opportunity to go anywhere.
- 1:20:03You want to why you want to stay here?
- 1:20:04I don't want you. Right?
- 1:20:07Like, you know, you're not saying that but it's like you
- 1:20:09look, you wouldn't want to stay where you're not wanted.
- 1:20:11I'm telling you you're not want to go somewhere else.
- 1:20:14Of course no of Coaches ever going to say that, right?
- 1:20:17But that's literally the inference that's happening.
- 1:20:20So like it's listen, the II asked the question and I we got
- 1:20:26a spirited debate about it and I thought it was really good
- 1:20:29conversation to have amongst this group, right?
- 1:20:32Because we've got obviously the king of the portal of that, the
- 1:20:36the very, very Pinnacle of the power fives.
- 1:20:39We've got a form of power 5 guy. Who's who's, in a Up-and-coming
- 1:20:45program that has a huge history and we've got a guy who's turned
- 1:20:53a mid-major from a till like, man, that place is pretty sexy,
- 1:20:58right? And that, and then we got the
- 1:21:00new B to the power 5, right? So, like you got you guys for,
- 1:21:04for takes on this. I thought experiences and such
- 1:21:11we're I think we're very good at, and obviously I throw in
- 1:21:13the, like, Hey, just in case you didn't know this.
- 1:21:16It's different in baseball and it's in some ways worse, right?
- 1:21:20It gets everybody hopefully to think.
- 1:21:22So, that's really all I wanted. So, what we got next big league?
- 1:21:28The thing that everybody's talking about the coaching
- 1:21:31Carousel because we haven't talked about it in my two-weeks,
- 1:21:34it ever is like, hello. Are you guys ready?
- 1:21:46Like a heavy metal concert and everybody's in the mosh pit,
- 1:21:50that's what it and I am sure that I am projecting because I'm
- 1:21:53in the middle of the mosh pit myself.
- 1:21:56But like man, Man, this Carousel.
- 1:22:01It's so last year, laddie, on at home
- 1:22:18and I still do think that maybe last year, was the longest I had
- 1:22:22ever seen the carousel spin, but I just want to say this for the
- 1:22:26record. So people are paying attention,
- 1:22:28right? Right, every time there's a
- 1:22:30power, five job. That's open.
- 1:22:32You can add like four to five weeks to the Carousel spinning,
- 1:22:37right? Okay, we now have Oregon hoping
- 1:22:44TCU open Illinois, Houston, open Illinois.
- 1:22:54Open. Right.
- 1:22:56Am I missing another power 5 because member Houston's going
- 1:22:59to the big 12. So then our power 5 school.
- 1:23:02So my missing anybody any power. 5 schools will Oregon might be
- 1:23:05out of the Pac-12 and in the Mountain West.
- 1:23:07So technically you could downgrade that you're not going
- 1:23:10well. Oh my gosh.
- 1:23:12Look at you. it is going to be the last is
- 1:23:27going to be the last kid picked when you play five on five like
- 1:23:32like the the the big 12 in the enemy, like, All right man.
- 1:23:37Come on y'all can come play with us because the Big Ten is
- 1:23:40absolutely positively not taking like they have all but said that
- 1:23:44like the Big Ten is going to take Cal and Stanford and Notre
- 1:23:47Dame and Washington in their next iteration.
- 1:23:50They're going to take those for, you know, why?
- 1:23:52Because they're all of the TV markets, Well, in their
- 1:23:59academic, Footprints footprint model, but that but that's all
- 1:24:05of our coaching coaching coaching carousel.
- 1:24:15Whatever people may think or not?
- 1:24:17Think about the Illinois's job, right?
- 1:24:21When Gary and Tanja, Buford Bailey were there, I think the
- 1:24:25program had a little bit more status than its had recently.
- 1:24:27Right. But when you, if you're paying
- 1:24:30attention to the conference realignment, Illinois is one of
- 1:24:35the school's who's going to be getting 100 million dollars a
- 1:24:37year sent their hundred million dollars that jobs a lot more
- 1:24:42sexy when you know that isn't it?
- 1:24:45If you the football coach and so, yes, I think it's a lot more
- 1:24:48sexy across the board. Assuming that the trickle-down
- 1:24:52actually is exactly. So you talked about you talking
- 1:24:55if track is important. Yes.
- 1:24:58Okay, there's no Escape. You know, we hear this all the
- 1:25:00time, you know, the trickle-down is going to help track and
- 1:25:05field, right? It's not us saying that it's not
- 1:25:08so, so that that it, that it, that it is, so that's it.
- 1:25:10So then it can't help the Illinois track situation be
- 1:25:13better. Because you're getting on a
- 1:25:15million dollars if they're not gonna get any of the hundred
- 1:25:17million, okay. But sir, way man there, I think,
- 1:25:20I know, I know this is real had conversations with other people
- 1:25:23in our profession about this. There is a great fear in our
- 1:25:28sport right now that the conference realignment when the
- 1:25:30dust all settles is going to cause the expulsion of some
- 1:25:36programs in track and field. Well, that was written about in
- 1:25:39that UCLA article. Correct basically their move to
- 1:25:42the Big Ten, helped save and solidify their Olympic sports.
- 1:25:47Exactly what I was saying. So Illinois you would imagine is
- 1:25:53going to be one of these jobs. Where you're going to have an
- 1:25:56Olympic sports job, you're going to have track and field.
- 1:25:58Jobs doesn't mean their salaries are going to go up, I don't
- 1:26:01know, but at least you're going to have the jobs right where
- 1:26:05when the musical chairs stop spinning if you're I don't know
- 1:26:08if you're Washington State and you ain't in the Pac-12, no
- 1:26:12more. Ain't nothing else.
- 1:26:14You might lose those jobs. You see what I'm saying?
- 1:26:17So that's a different conversation than that, making
- 1:26:21that a better job because they're getting a hundred
- 1:26:23billion dollars a year Noah Saying is that the hundred
- 1:26:26million dollars a year is feels like a little bit of insulation
- 1:26:29feels like a little bit of security for coaching positions
- 1:26:33at all at those places I would much rather I think anyone in
- 1:26:37the industry would tell you like the safest place for you to be
- 1:26:40right now. If your track and field coach is
- 1:26:43the big tent Well, I don't know about that, I don't know, but
- 1:26:50but definitely there is if your track and field coach the safest
- 1:26:54place for you to be for sure that a power five conference.
- 1:26:56I will say that. Yes.
- 1:26:57But we don't know what the powerful look like.
- 1:26:59Well the day when it comes to
- 1:27:13security, there can't be any more security.
- 1:27:16Especially when it comes to track feel, right?
- 1:27:18Because tractor feels important in this columns Walt what is
- 1:27:22this? So it's probably happening and
- 1:27:53we end up with four. If the greed continues, trust
- 1:27:56me, when I tell you this, we will never have a power 3.
- 1:28:01If if we go beyond for like if they start cannibalizing the ACC
- 1:28:06we're going to end up with two conferences to 32.
- 1:28:09That's where it's going. We're never going to end up with
- 1:28:12three because it didn't like the math doesn't work.
- 1:28:14It doesn't work with that to composite 32 is not going to
- 1:28:17work either. So yes it does because you got
- 1:28:20to it's look it's the NFL model right into my age. 32 with my
- 1:28:24work with two divisions of 16 who are all of the make you
- 1:28:28okay, we'll see. So for some my my two cents in
- 1:28:33this and into Clyde's point. We're still talking about
- 1:28:40whether Are not the ad actually values track.
- 1:28:44And field is Clemson is any example, okay?
- 1:28:52Minnesota like they're getting a hundred million dollars to,
- 1:28:56okay? And they have tried and failed
- 1:29:01to get rid of Men's Track, right?
- 1:29:04And Clemson, tried to get rid of Men's Track and, and failed as
- 1:29:10well. But they still tried, right?
- 1:29:14So if anything the you know, they've already put them, put
- 1:29:20their biases. They've already put it out
- 1:29:23there. Okay.
- 1:29:24So You know, the I will be curious and I will be very
- 1:29:33interested to see now that these coaches are, you know, have been
- 1:29:38let go right? Does does the is a bar raised
- 1:29:44right? Are they going to swing for the
- 1:29:46fences to get someone massive and end up paying them double
- 1:29:53what they were paying the other coach that was there before?
- 1:29:56Are they going to try and put together a super staff?
- 1:29:59Like those are the things that you know that that would be the
- 1:30:02real litmus test as far as I'm concerned.
- 1:30:05And I'm talking about from programs that have probably
- 1:30:08been, you know, they've had one or two years there.
- 1:30:10They've had success here, but for the most part have not been
- 1:30:14consistently at the national level, right?
- 1:30:17Look, look at look at what Tennessee did you learn
- 1:30:19together? Incredible staff.
- 1:30:21Absolutely not, you know, and kudos to what Leroy did it /?
- 1:30:24Yes, put together very, very good staff, incredible staff as
- 1:30:26well. So there's no moon day.
- 1:30:28Clearly they're vested in track and field exact, and and there
- 1:30:32and there's nobody on the planet.
- 1:30:33That doesn't believe Oregon's going to put a break staff
- 1:30:35together. Absolute least, you know, it's I
- 1:30:37am Thomas, I'm going to hire somebody.
- 1:30:43I will question whether Illinois backward because it's at this
- 1:30:49point it hasn't been. It doesn't seem that it's been a
- 1:30:52priority. I don't know.
- 1:30:53Yeah. 100. 100 million or not? Yeah.
- 1:30:57And we got to say the same thing about, you know, the TCU
- 1:31:00situation, TCU has a storied tradition there.
- 1:31:05And so let's see if they step up their game.
- 1:31:06They step up to the plate or they try to go status quo.
- 1:31:09Yeah. Jon Drummond the TCU.
- 1:31:16Come on. No one likes my idea.
- 1:31:18No one likes it. So, how about if we have the
- 1:31:21spawn of Jon Drummond? Because he will be on campus.
- 1:31:26Does that count? Oh, man.
- 1:31:31Yeah, I mean, so to address that I think was the most valuable
- 1:31:36one of the most valuable coaching Carousel topic
- 1:31:38discussions that we've had in a while.
- 1:31:42But definitely, I lost about the jobs that are still out there.
- 1:31:47Ohio, State's looking for a spring coach, Kansas is looking
- 1:31:52for a Sprint code, Kansas looking for a Sprint coach.
- 1:31:59Arizona State's looking for half a staff.
- 1:32:01Yeah. Wasn't even a say that why the
- 1:32:05people need to know that there's a throws job?
- 1:32:06Open is a jumps job open just shop, open at Arizona State,
- 1:32:09those are facts. That's not, it's not shade.
- 1:32:11I'm not throwing any shake, those are facts.
- 1:32:13Okay? So then, Illinois, also you
- 1:32:16Carbondale Illinois, state is named named Drake just named.
- 1:32:25I can't say his name. Okay Yukon.
- 1:32:35Yep. Didn't set, didn't Central
- 1:32:41Arkansas, I'll make name their coach.
- 1:32:45I didn't see that one. Okay, Townsend, J mu needs a
- 1:32:52distance coach. Brian Johnson has how many jobs
- 1:32:57open at at La Tech at least one he just posted that.
- 1:33:02He just got on campus and this is personal for media so I have
- 1:33:06no clue. I don't even know who this man
- 1:33:07is but there was no announcement of filling of positions there.
- 1:33:13I mean there are quite a few and and definitely ones that you and
- 1:33:18L job is open. Yeah, Ryan Johnson left there.
- 1:33:21So there's a hole is a hole staff open. yeah, and then all
- 1:33:28of ya, just all over the place and ones that haven't been
- 1:33:32publicized yet to so, Who here? Feels like there's more to come.
- 1:33:43Can I just can I just throw this in there?
- 1:33:45Just to be just such a jack wad. Let's not even discuss the fact
- 1:33:51that more than likely before school starts.
- 1:33:55The NCAA coaching limitations are going to be lifted.
- 1:33:58And the scholarship limitations are going to be increased.
- 1:34:02And so if schools now can give 24 and 34 and the Scout and the
- 1:34:08Staffing limitations are not six.
- 1:34:12Oh my not. Now, it's not a coaching
- 1:34:14Carousel. Now, it's a coaching circus like
- 1:34:17that. Now.
- 1:34:17It's literally like yeah. Well and so, you know, I'll just
- 1:34:23say this out loud. I'm not speaking to my specific
- 1:34:26situation at all some of these coaching decisions or Coke ad
- 1:34:31Administration decisions. Could they be rooted in that?
- 1:34:36The anticipation of these of these changes, you know, can can
- 1:34:40X Coach B. Properly.
- 1:34:47Suited for what's to come. You know, and I mean, those are
- 1:34:51like active covers. I'm having these conversations
- 1:34:53in my head quite literally, at this point, trying to not figure
- 1:34:58things out, but kind of get an understanding and have a
- 1:35:00landscape, not because of anything else besides being in
- 1:35:04the, in the seats and in the environment that I'm in
- 1:35:06specifically right now, like how to best, prepare myself, how to
- 1:35:10best arm myself, how to best. Make sense of things.
- 1:35:14I guess is the best way to say it.
- 1:35:16I don't know. So yeah, that's one thing that I
- 1:35:20was thinking about tossed in the air and my clothes off is today
- 1:35:23is you know If not right now how is this going to change the
- 1:35:31landscape and the way that it's used that position is you?
- 1:35:36So yeah so yeah we even touched really much of the D2 D3 NAIA or
- 1:35:47and jccc a an extensive list. It's a lot know if it's this is
- 1:35:53not necessarily the time to be super picky because Obviously
- 1:35:56you want to have standards and and desires of what you're
- 1:35:59trying to fulfill but lat like that's really.
- 1:36:02We've seen success on all the levels and what do you define as
- 1:36:06success and what are you willing to tolerate, right?
- 1:36:10Yeah for me you know the craziest part of the head coach
- 1:36:14positions and get the headlines and they should right but it's
- 1:36:18when the staffs get filled all the changing around really
- 1:36:21happens. Yeah that's because you got to
- 1:36:24staff a 64 right. So that everybody talks about
- 1:36:27the head coach job getting filled, right?
- 1:36:29He or she could fill those other five positions but five
- 1:36:32different schools, right? It's easy to happen.
- 1:36:37Hmm. All right.
- 1:36:40Well, let's blow off steam because I feel like the little
- 1:36:45created there. But would you rather the
- 1:36:51governor? I'm going to say, if you want to
- 1:36:54play or not because you have to play.
- 1:36:55So, would you rather play or not play or play again?
- 1:37:00All right. Are you ready, sir?
- 1:37:02I'm ready. All right, so similar question
- 1:37:04but definitely were two different.
- 1:37:06Would you rather not about your future or alter your past?
- 1:37:12I'll turn my past. Would you rather write an
- 1:37:15elephant or a donkey to work? I thought it was funny.
- 1:37:22Oh, come on. That is that's, that's a
- 1:37:24no-brainer. Now, give me the elephant, man.
- 1:37:27Oh man, let's go. This question came up just
- 1:37:31because I had kids on the line. So part in this question, would
- 1:37:35you rather fart out loud every time or have an SB D?
- 1:37:42Every time I would say that's all I can.
- 1:37:45SB, d stands for silent but deadly if you don't know this.
- 1:37:51Good thing you clarified. That yeah.
- 1:37:57A fart out loud every time or a salad?
- 1:37:59That deadly every time almost I'm mr.
- 1:38:01Pillai do I'll fart out loud. All right.
- 1:38:06Sorry. Sorry.
- 1:38:09Would you rather always wear a hat or sunglasses?
- 1:38:14Sunglasses. I would like what would you
- 1:38:19rather live in a cave or in a treehouse?
- 1:38:24Cave. Would you rather have forever
- 1:38:27gas or a self-driving car? Our.
- 1:38:33Forever gasps hmm or a self-driving car?
- 1:38:38Hmm Zaman is electric I don't know.
- 1:38:45No gasps, Where'd I go? Would you rather throw in a
- 1:38:51shotput competition or run a 10K?
- 1:38:55Chocolate. Oh my God what's happened?
- 1:38:59Hey nobody picking the tenge ever see look we're going to get
- 1:39:03responses to take 10K all day. Anyways gentlemen, the questions
- 1:39:09are yours. If you assuming that you are not
- 1:39:14working. You got no official duties.
- 1:39:18Would you rather watch World Championships from the warm-up
- 1:39:23track or from the stands? Woman track.
- 1:39:41Okay. I mean story behind the story of
- 1:39:44always, that's me. Could I just go to say, would
- 1:39:49you rather be the head coach at a non power 5?
- 1:39:53Making 92,000 dollars? What would you rather?
- 1:39:56Or would you rather be the seventh assistant at an SEC
- 1:40:00School making 160,000? - these are real conversations
- 1:40:08that are going to happen. So absolutely I might as well
- 1:40:12ask it out there you're not going to be the seventh
- 1:40:15assistant, you're not going to be the seventh assistant making
- 1:40:18160,000 dollars. Okay.
- 1:40:35Give us the people false hope out there man.
- 1:40:37Come on, I'm not giving people false, hope look, it might be
- 1:40:40false, hope right? This second today and track but
- 1:40:43I believe there's a world where people will actually like
- 1:40:46discuss how much they make and don't make it, then maybe
- 1:40:48they'll actually make real money because I'm telling us right
- 1:40:50now, there's going to be a seventh assistant in the SEC in
- 1:40:53baseball, that makes a hundred sixty thousand dollars because I
- 1:40:55am someone, I know someone who tomorrow is going to have a
- 1:41:00conversation for a Interior job, that is going to make almost
- 1:41:05200,000 dollars. So anyway the question answer,
- 1:41:10the question answer, thank you. There's only one way, there's
- 1:41:23only one way that I'm doing the 160 and that would be that
- 1:41:28power. 5 job has to be a championship team.
- 1:41:34Okay, good answer sir. Yes sir.
- 1:41:41Hey. So, would you rather?
- 1:41:49In your next venture, as a coach, would you rather
- 1:41:54immediately go to a job where you're going to challenge for
- 1:41:57the title immediately or be putting charge at a position
- 1:42:02where you can build to be a contender in, to the readings?
- 1:42:25I have two answers to that question, but at this stage of
- 1:42:28my career, I'd like to win a championship.
- 1:42:32Period. Right my.
- 1:42:37Here he comes. My nature is to death.
- 1:42:46My nature is why is why I asked? That's why I asked the question
- 1:42:48was. I know your nature is to do.
- 1:42:50Yes, I am. Absolutely.
- 1:42:52I absolutely love the, the building process like this.
- 1:42:58What we're going through and that sort of thing.
- 1:43:03And I have experienced, you know, that walk right into the
- 1:43:06situation and the trains already left the station.
- 1:43:08So yeah. And I want to say this, I made a
- 1:43:13comment earlier in the show, when you said, You got your
- 1:43:19Masters at Florida State and the comment was not a Florida
- 1:43:23Florida, State dealer was, Kareem went there and we wanted
- 1:43:25him here with us. That's what battle to do with
- 1:43:28the Florida border state. He came here and made an
- 1:43:32impression. He's like, oh gosh, sorry can't
- 1:43:39fight. Love, Love Is Love.
- 1:43:48Kill it at all. My campus is like coach, I'm
- 1:43:51out. No, you remember all those young
- 1:43:54kids relate to where's Chris Curry?
- 1:43:57He's a doll as one of my favorite pictures was when we
- 1:44:04had we went to Florida State when I was at on a squad.
- 1:44:10And I have Jackie like on my back and she's got her full
- 1:44:14Florida State on. I've got my Florida gear on and
- 1:44:17there's a Yeah. I mean anyway.
- 1:44:23To did you have one for me? She asked all the mother.
- 1:44:27Yes, okay, yeah. Remember the CSU of plethora as
- 1:44:33well. Oh goodness.
- 1:44:42All right, well, let's run the show with heartbeat props just
- 1:44:45giving people a shout out flowers roses lifting up all
- 1:44:50that stuff while we can while they're still around.
- 1:44:55I want to get, I want to, I want to just make a statement I
- 1:44:57guess. You know, mental health folks is
- 1:45:02real, I've dealt with some situations over the past.
- 1:45:08Four to five weeks with people that are dealing with mental
- 1:45:12health, issues at the struggles, with life, the struggles with
- 1:45:15careers. And I'm just asking everybody to
- 1:45:18be cognizant of people around you that are having issues.
- 1:45:22Don't push him away. Don't just assume that they're
- 1:45:26going to be okay. No.
- 1:45:28Allow people to lean on you before they fall and it's a lot
- 1:45:33easier to prop them up to pick them up.
- 1:45:35So that's just want to say that Peak please.
- 1:45:38Attention to people around you. There's a lot of people in this
- 1:45:42world that are struggling and struggling badly right now.
- 1:45:44So just asking everybody to be aware of that.
- 1:45:52You're going to do stuff that make people cry and let not, you
- 1:45:55should do it at the end. Sir ruin things, no, well said,
- 1:46:01well said, my heartbeat props tonight and I'm not trying to be
- 1:46:08funny. I'm actually serious about this.
- 1:46:12I'm a. I hope I'm premature.
- 1:46:13I hope I'm wrong. But my heartbeat props go to the
- 1:46:16Pac-12 because I think it's over.
- 1:46:20I, I just I can't imagine a landscape where it survives and,
- 1:46:29you know, I was having this conversation earlier today, when
- 1:46:32the Pac-12 lost Los Angeles, that was pretty much it.
- 1:46:37And listen, depending on where you are in the country, depend
- 1:46:40on, where you've grown up, depending on what kind of fan
- 1:46:42of, what kind of sports you are, you either love the Pac-12 or
- 1:46:46you spend a lot of time talking trash about it, but the Pac-12
- 1:46:50is the conference champions for a reason.
- 1:46:52And it has an unbelievably storied past just so much
- 1:47:00history there. And this is most definitely a
- 1:47:02nun ceremonial way to die and it's ugly.
- 1:47:07And You know, I don't know if we're I don't know if this
- 1:47:11Reckoning is the evolution of college sports or the D
- 1:47:14evolution of cost reports but whatever it is, it seems that it
- 1:47:18is devouring. One of the cornerstones of
- 1:47:21Collegiate Sport and you couldn't have, most people would
- 1:47:26have never imagined Universe where college, sports moves
- 1:47:28forward, and there is no Pac-12 Conference and we are right
- 1:47:32there on the precipice of that. So if it's to be saved in some
- 1:47:37form Bravo, To whatever genius figures out how to do that.
- 1:47:40But all signs point to the it's over and as a West Coast kid
- 1:47:45that grew up, you know, following those athletes and
- 1:47:49paying attention to those schools and attended one of them
- 1:47:52for a period of time. I can't say I'm, I can't say I'm
- 1:47:56happy to watch it. It's it feels very sad, but
- 1:48:01business is business. Survival of the fittest is what
- 1:48:04it is. And you know, you're responsible
- 1:48:07for the choices you make and Secuence has happened.
- 1:48:09So. Here we are and it just might be
- 1:48:14the end of it and very short order.
- 1:48:16So Props to Everybody, the alumni, the history, the
- 1:48:23storylines, the, all the things that make the Pac-12, what it
- 1:48:26is, it's been amazing. And I don't wish to see it die
- 1:48:32this way, but it looks like it's dead.
- 1:48:36I'll go behind you but I will say I just want to jump in on
- 1:48:39your heartbeat prop. Like I think you are 100%,
- 1:48:42right? Like there was no one on this
- 1:48:44planet that would ever predicted if one of the power 5 went down,
- 1:48:48it was packed well because the Pac-12 has Los Angeles.
- 1:48:51The Pac-12 has the Bay Area and it is all about TV markets and
- 1:48:55you would never in your life. Thought they would have lost
- 1:48:58anything to the Big 12 which has one TV Market in it.
- 1:49:03And the big, The Big Ten, which barely has to.
- 1:49:08But here we are at the end at the end of the day, the the, I
- 1:49:13think there were some arrogance involved in the leadership of
- 1:49:16the Pac-12, and they fumbled the bag tremendously and they never
- 1:49:18really Foster. The kind of relationship if
- 1:49:20necessary out there. And so they never really unify,
- 1:49:23the TV markets in the nla and, and the unified and the TV
- 1:49:27markets, in San Diego and the TV markets in the bay, because had
- 1:49:30they done that? You take those three markets and
- 1:49:32you add the Phoenix market and and the Seattle market like they
- 1:49:35win. So yeah, that's a bag.
- 1:49:38That is a bag that is completely been fumbled my a lot of
- 1:49:48thoughts going on my head. My heartbeat props.
- 1:49:59Wait stuff, sometimes look like, but my my heartbeat props.
- 1:50:10Go out to we talked about them earlier but young people in the
- 1:50:18portal, I think some I think at least half the people in the
- 1:50:24portal or they're in the portal begrudgingly.
- 1:50:28I think the other the other half are in the portal and of that
- 1:50:32half, I think 85% of them are in the portal delusionally and, you
- 1:50:40know, This is like wishing that every kid gets what they want
- 1:50:45for Christmas but if I could have it if I could have my
- 1:50:49druthers every kid that's in the portal would get from the portal
- 1:50:52what they hope to get. I know that's not going to
- 1:50:55happen. I noticed I'm going to be close
- 1:50:56to happen and so my heart be props actually go out to the
- 1:50:59kids in the portal because there's There's a great number
- 1:51:04of people who were in the portal with, with Great Hopes and
- 1:51:07aspirations. And I've actually seen it
- 1:51:09already already play itself out on two occasions already this
- 1:51:14year, in the portal, where a kid gets in the portal, and they
- 1:51:17find out that not only the there's not another power 5
- 1:51:21school, want to give them the money that they were on but I'm
- 1:51:26in major school. Doesn't want to give them what?
- 1:51:28They're on division to school. Doesn't want to give them the
- 1:51:31what the money they were. Iran and they were offered like
- 1:51:35some level of offer from an Naia And, you know, that's
- 1:51:40depressing. And I realized from that
- 1:51:44conversation, that these kids who go in the portal, like I
- 1:51:52really wish them all the best because I know why they're in
- 1:51:55there, they're in the portal. Trying to catch lightning in a
- 1:51:59bottle. They're in the portal, trying to
- 1:52:01better their lives because everybody who gets the pour Les,
- 1:52:04why they get in to get in the portal because they want better
- 1:52:07for themselves. And I wish them all the very,
- 1:52:12very best. If I could give any, if I could
- 1:52:16give any advice to the folks, going to the portal, it would
- 1:52:18just If you take a deep breath and have a real sense of self
- 1:52:23before you go in, I know that's unrealistic.
- 1:52:26But I think if you have a sense of self, the portal can only be
- 1:52:30good for you. It's when you don't have a real
- 1:52:33sense of who you are and what your real value is out there
- 1:52:36that you jump in the portal. And unfortunately the portal
- 1:52:38tells you what your value is. And for a lot of people that's
- 1:52:41brutal. For a lot of people that's like
- 1:52:45when you find out, I mean you're basically like throwing yourself
- 1:52:48out there like hey I'm available.
- 1:52:49Anybody want me and when you find out that the people who
- 1:52:52want you or nobody wants you but if the people who want you are
- 1:52:55just their lesser than where you're at.
- 1:52:59That's a tough pill to swallow for a lot of kids and this is a
- 1:53:02tough tough mental health time of the year that nobody really
- 1:53:06is talking about. Because you know, there's
- 1:53:09there's those people out there who like, what was it, why why?
- 1:53:11Why kids cuckoo, why could kids complain.
- 1:53:14Like they got the portal, they could have the freedom to go
- 1:53:16wherever they want to. Well the unfortunate part is
- 1:53:18like look. There's another side to that
- 1:53:20coin. Right?
- 1:53:22Like you can jump in the portal and think you're going to go to
- 1:53:26you know, Prime Steak you like I said and you come to come to
- 1:53:32find out. You're at green green beans, and
- 1:53:34coleslaw Tech, right? And on a partial And you know,
- 1:53:42that's a tough pill to swallow and not everybody is really
- 1:53:46prepared for that. And Yeah, I know my heartbeat
- 1:53:52probably seems a little weird but I do, I do send my heartbeat
- 1:53:56props out to all the kids. All the young people males and
- 1:53:59females were in the portal and I really do wish that you find
- 1:54:03Salvation and betterment because I know that's why you're in the
- 1:54:07portal. Evan, are you with me, huh?
- 1:54:16You are me? My heart.
- 1:54:20Be props. Go out to The Collegiate
- 1:54:25athletes that are about to. Compete at the world
- 1:54:31championships. Next year, next week. and, you
- 1:54:42know, if there is a If there's any, any advice that I mean,
- 1:54:51there really isn't any advice that I can give these these
- 1:54:54young men and young women. But what I will say is that The
- 1:55:00feeling will be different. The, the air will be a little
- 1:55:05thicker. The intensity will be higher.
- 1:55:11And a lot of your Idols are going to become rivals.
- 1:55:17This is a moment where you are going to be exposed to the very
- 1:55:22best in the world and you know, in terms of my, you know, me
- 1:55:31viewing and watching the World Championships, you know, next
- 1:55:34week and the week after I'm very curious to see how many of those
- 1:55:39young men and young women Accept that challenge and go and
- 1:55:45compete their hearts out. You know what we do here year
- 1:55:51after year? I mean obviously is that, you
- 1:55:54know, we trumpet, the accomplishments of Collegiate
- 1:55:59athletes and year after year. After year the results, speak
- 1:56:04for themselves. We see world-class athlete
- 1:56:07world-class results at the NCAA meat.
- 1:56:12And the true litmus test comes right.
- 1:56:16Okay. You did that amongst your peers.
- 1:56:20Now, you got to do it against the best.
- 1:56:23And, you know, I am really looking forward to next week and
- 1:56:28we do the preview because, you know, I'm curious to see who who
- 1:56:36has who on their radar and but yeah, heart be props to you
- 1:56:41young men and young women, it's going to be exciting.
- 1:56:48Going last, wrapping it up. I wanted to give Harvey props to
- 1:56:51the women's Coach running coaches Collective.
- 1:56:55It's an organization organization who is re, I don't
- 1:56:59know if repurposed regroups realigns repurpose themselves
- 1:57:03and just stand for something that's notable.
- 1:57:08They've got Karan, Sheila, Melissa, Julia, Helene, and I
- 1:57:15feel like I'm missing a name, so, And I apologize, but they've
- 1:57:19got an event coming up soon, so take a look at that but they
- 1:57:23just its support for women athletes, female athletes, as
- 1:57:26well as women coaches. And so not that we don't have
- 1:57:32support but there's never enough support right?
- 1:57:34And for males and females alike, but specifically, the females in
- 1:57:36a coaching profession aren't profession of which is male
- 1:57:39dominant. So shout-out, Harvey.
- 1:57:42Props to you all, keep doing what you're doing.
- 1:57:44Don't get discouraged, and let's keep That boat moving forward.
- 1:57:48So with that being said, I said I was going to try to keep us to
- 1:57:52a shorter time period this week and I failed so sorry, but that
- 1:57:56just means that you all get to exercise a little bit longer,
- 1:57:58keep walking a little bit longer and get that workout in so we're
- 1:58:02done. So with that said, thank you
- 1:58:05everyone. See you again next week and
- 1:58:07we'll talk to you soon. Bye, everyone.
- 1:58:10Grab two W's. When the lights come on.
- 1:59:12The are small. We put it in slow-mo.
- 1:59:15What you fast for athletics. Pamela?
- 1:59:17See the task force.
