- 0:41Speaker 1: The f A. Hey, y'all, welcome today's show. Been a
- 1:03few days since I've done one. I had to take
- 1:04a little time off, do some hurricane cleanup and little
- 1:08travel and all kinds of fun stuff, And of course
- 1:12we had the election, woo trump one. All right, So
- 1:17let's just jump right in here, try to get caught
- 1:19back up with where we were. We'll start with the
- 1:22questions and answers from radio replies, and today the person
- 1:26asks why does the Catholic Church? Why is the Catholic
- 1:30Church antagonistic to the Bible? When they answer, she is not.
- 1:34She protects it and defends it. But she does teach
- 1:37that the private reading of the Bible, with reliance solely
- 1:41upon one's own powers of comprehension, is no sure way
- 1:45to arrive at the truth taught by Christ. And experience
- 1:47bears out this teaching. And the question asked, was not
- 1:53the Bible unknown to the people before the Reformation? And
- 1:56they answer no. Beautifully illuminate copies of the script wrought
- 2:00by the monks were in the charge of the clergy
- 2:03in the churches, and from these the Word of God
- 2:05was carefully preached to the people. Before the inventu of
- 2:08the printing press, a wider diffusion was impossible. The asks
- 2:12did not the Catholic Church burn all Bibles and punish
- 2:15those who had copies? And they answered no. The Catholic
- 2:18Church would have been very foolish to have copies multiplied
- 2:21only to destroy them. When the printing press was invented
- 2:24by the German Catholic Gutenberg in fourteen forty five, the
- 2:28first book printed was a Bible before Protestantism had come
- 2:32into existence. And he continues, yet does not the Catholic
- 2:36Church regard the work of the Bible Society as a
- 2:40danger to Christianity and the answer She condemns the principle
- 2:44that Bibles should be distributed indiscriminately to people on the
- 2:48understanding that they will be able to attain the truth
- 2:50without the guidance of the Church and by their own
- 2:53unaided efforts. The wildest absurdities have resulted from the theory
- 2:58of private interpretations. And if it is not dangerous to
- 3:03Christianity to have some new pretended Christian Church arising every
- 3:07ten years from some mad cap reading of an isolated text,
- 3:11I would like to know your idea of what is
- 3:13really dangerous to Christianity and The person then says, does
- 3:18not she herself the Church forbid the reading of scriptures
- 3:22in the vernacular, and the answer no. There are various
- 3:25Catholic societies for the diffusion of the Holy Gospels in
- 3:28the vernacular that's the language of whatever country you happen
- 3:32to be in, such as the Society of Saint Jerome
- 3:34approved by the Church. Pope Pious the tenth granted special
- 3:37blessings to all those who would read scripture daily and
- 3:41recommend others to do so. But it is essential that
- 3:44the teaching of the Living Church be kept in mind
- 3:47as a key to the true sense of the Bible.
- 3:50All right, And you'll hear that kind of stuff a
- 3:54lot from Protestants. They'll say, the Catholic Church doesn't allow
- 3:58people to read the Bible, and that's not true. We
- 4:00actually gain an indulgence from reading the Bible thanks to
- 4:04what was pious the which one was it? You just said,
- 4:08I just said it? Uh, yeah, pious. The Tenth, of course,
- 4:13and the Catechism instructs us to read the Bible, and
- 4:17the Church says that, you know, knowledge of the Bible
- 4:22is knowledge of God, and very often, as a penance,
- 4:25shall be told to read the Bible. I mean we're
- 4:27supposed to read the Bible every day. That the Bible
- 4:31is a work of the Church. The Church wrote the Bible.
- 4:33Jesus didn't leave a book. He left a church that
- 4:37wrote the Bible, propagated the Bible, and has never forbid,
- 4:42forbade anyone knowledge of the Bible. The Bible was read
- 4:45to people before they were literate, and once why it spread.
- 4:49Literacy came about the Church's authorized Catholic Bibles, beginning with
- 4:54the Bibliosacra Vogada. I believe it's in what the four hundreds,
- 4:57And then you know the doing Reims is older than
- 5:01the King James and far more accurate. And you know,
- 5:04most Protestants don't even know that Gutenberg was Catholic. That's truth,
- 5:09all right. Now, let's get into Father Spirago's exhaustive Catechism
- 5:12of the Catholic Church, and today we will talk about
- 5:19the wonderful topic of the forgiveness of sin. There is
- 5:23no man upon earth without sin. Consequently, there is none
- 5:27who does not need forgiveness of sin. If we say
- 5:30we have no sin, the truth is not in us.
- 5:32First John one point eight. The just man falls seven
- 5:36times Proverbs. I guess it's twenty four to sixteen. God
- 5:40permits us to fall into venial sin again and again
- 5:43to keep us humble. As we sin daily, we must
- 5:46daily ask for forgiveness of sin in our in the
- 5:49our Father. Only by reason of an exceptional privilege, such
- 5:53as was bestowed upon God to his blessed mother can
- 5:57mortal man pass the period of his soul upon earth
- 6:00without committing venial sin. Nay more, without the succor of
- 6:06special grace. It is impossible to avoid venial sin for
- 6:10any length of time. The highest perfection of which human
- 6:15frailty is capable is this, not to commit any sin,
- 6:19even venial sin, with deliberate intent. We can obtain forgiveness
- 6:23of sin because Christ merited it for us by death
- 6:26on the cross, and because he gave the power to
- 6:29forgive sins to his apostles and their successors. There is
- 6:32nothing more consoling for mankind upon earth than the forgiveness
- 6:36of sins, For nothing causes us more misery than sin.
- 6:40Even in pagan time, Socrates look forward hopefully to the
- 6:43advent of a mediator who would teach mankind in what
- 6:46manner remission of sin was to be obtained. Christ earned
- 6:50the grace of forgiveness for us by his sacred passion
- 6:53and death upon the cross. Christ is the lamb of
- 6:56God who taketh away the sins of the world John
- 6:58one twenty nine. In him we have redemption through his
- 7:02blood and remission of sins Colossians one fourteen. Christ is
- 7:07a propitiation for our sins, and not for our sins only,
- 7:11but also for those of the whole world. First John
- 7:14two two. Christ conferred the power to forgive sins only
- 7:18upon the Apostles and their successors. He himself exercised his
- 7:22power in the case of Mary Magdalen, said Chaus the
- 7:24good thief. When he healed the paralytic, he said expressly
- 7:28that you may know the son of Man hath the
- 7:30power on earth to forgive sins. I say unto thee arise,
- 7:33take up thy bed and go. Matthew nine. This same
- 7:38power which he possessed, our Lord gave to the Holy
- 7:41Apostles when after his resurrection he said to them, receive
- 7:48ye the Holy Ghost, who sends yourself forgive they are
- 7:51forgiven them, and who sends you retain they are retained.
- 7:55John twenty twenty three. And you will find the most proper.
- 8:00Since I have never read that verse, it always amazed you,
- 8:05I mean, people who've been to Bible colleges and such.
- 8:08The way the Bible is taught in Protestant churches and
- 8:11Sunday schools and Bible colleges and all that. It's very
- 8:16out of context and very you know, to take a
- 8:21passage here and explain it, preach on it whatever. If
- 8:25you ever hear a Protestant sermon, this is mainly way
- 8:28it is. So take like two sentences out of the
- 8:30Bible and talk about it for the next thirty minutes.
- 8:33Usually it has very little to do what they've actually
- 8:35just read out of the Bible. It's just like they're
- 8:38they consider it to be an inspired opinion. Well it's not.
- 8:41But when you start taking passages out of the Bible
- 8:45and you don't read things in context, it's really easy
- 8:49to skip over those verses that show the lie of
- 8:52Protestant doctrine. And I mean pretty amazing. Just a few
- 8:58months ago, I got in like a little minor debate
- 9:00online and the person said they had a doctor of
- 9:04divinity and been a minister and a teacher of all that,
- 9:08and they said, you know, a priest has no ability
- 9:11forgive sins. And I stated this verse and they said,
- 9:15where's that in the Bible. And I'm like, get your Bible,
- 9:17go to John. What was it. I'll say it one
- 9:21more time and it's John twenty twenty three. And they said,
- 9:28that doesn't mean that they can actually forgive. I said,
- 9:30but no, Jesus actually said, those who sends you forgive,
- 9:33they are forgiven. Those who sends you retain, they are retained. Well,
- 9:38they're just saying it's like the you know, the Lord's prayer,
- 9:40forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who are
- 9:43trespasses this week, for you those trespass against this, you know,
- 9:45depending on the translation, I'm like, no, no, no, that's
- 9:49asking God to forgive your sins, and you're required to
- 9:54forgive someone who sent against you. This is take the
- 9:59subject of verb. Let's go back to our old you know,
- 10:02English classes from when we're in third grade, and let's
- 10:04diagram this sentence. Jesus is specifically saying you, the apostles
- 10:11have the power to forgive the sins of others, not
- 10:13sins they've committed against you, but their sins that they've
- 10:17committed against anyone and anywhere, in any place, and far
- 10:22beyond that you have the power to retain their sins.
- 10:28They argued for a couple hours and basically gave up
- 10:32and that was the end of it. Absolutely unable to
- 10:36make them realize that the words of the Bible are
- 10:40in direct contradiction with what they were taught in their
- 10:43Bible college. Because the person has a PhD in Divinity
- 10:46studies or something, you know, and they can't accept that
- 10:50what they were taught was wrong. It would literally undermine
- 10:53everything for them, undermine their belief their doctrine, their theology,
- 10:58their credentials, their rear, they're standing in their community. If
- 11:03they had to admit that the Catholic Church was right
- 11:05and they're wrong, that's I mean, it's pride is the
- 11:10biggest obstacle. Human stubbornness based on pride is the biggest obstacle,
- 11:16all right. So anyway, he therefore, who would have his
- 11:19sins forgiven, must address himself to the bishop or the priest,
- 11:22whom in Christ has appointed. In the Catholic Church alone
- 11:25is the remission of sins, for she alone has received
- 11:28the Holy Ghost as a pledge of this grace. It's
- 11:31a reference to Saint Augustine. Something Saint Augustine wrote, he
- 11:34didn't give the exact verse on that may have been
- 11:37a direct quote. I'm not sure. Mortal sin is remitted
- 11:40by baptism and penance. Venial sin and the temporal penalties
- 11:45do it by good works done in a state of grace.
- 11:48These good works are prayer, fasting, almsgiving, hearing holy masks,
- 11:52receiving holy communion, use of the sacramentos, gaining indulgences, and
- 11:56forgiving offenses. Baptism is the ship in which we embark
- 12:00on our voyage to heaven. If we commit mortal sin,
- 12:02we are like men who are shipwrecked. The only hope
- 12:05for them of being saved is laying hold of a
- 12:07plank and clinging firmly to it. So for the Christian,
- 12:10the only means of reaching the port of eternal salvation
- 12:13is through the sacrament of penance. Not prayer, fasting, nor
- 12:17almsgiving in itself can procure for man the forgiveness of
- 12:20mortal sin. These can only lead to penance, by which
- 12:24sin is washed away. Angels and archangels have no power
- 12:27to alter this. Nay, the Redeemer himself does not forgive sin.
- 12:30Without penance, and that's says a direct Saint Augustine quote.
- 12:35Good works do, however, avail for the expiation of venial sin.
- 12:39Thus Saint Augustine declares a single pattern noster or our
- 12:43Father said from the heart, will obliterate the venial sin
- 12:46of a whole day. Venial sins can also be remitted
- 12:50by the use of holy water, indulgences, prayers, communion, the
- 12:53blessing of the bishop, etc. There is no sin too
- 12:57great for God to forgive here below, if it be
- 12:59sincerely repented of and humbly confessed. God makes his promise
- 13:03to the contrite sinner. If your sins be as scarlet,
- 13:06they shall be made as white as snow, And if
- 13:09they be as red as crimson, they should be as
- 13:11white as wool Isaiah one p. Eighteen. God makes no
- 13:15distinction between sinners. He permits the priest to forgive every
- 13:19sin without exception. Therefore, no man is so godless and wicked,
- 13:23but that he may yet hope to obtain forgiveness, provided
- 13:27he be sincerely sorry for his transgressions. In fact, God
- 13:31receives the sinner more graciously the greater his sin has been,
- 13:35just as the fisherman pursues his work more gladly the
- 13:37bigger fish he catches. The sin against the Holy Ghost
- 13:42is the only one which admits of no forgiveness, because
- 13:45the man who sins against the Holy Ghost is the
- 13:47man who will not amend. The fault does not rest
- 13:50with God but with the man. For even if he
- 13:52acknowledges his sin, he will not abandon it, and consequently
- 13:57does not bewail it without contrition and change of heart,
- 14:00there is no forgiveness. A sin once forgiven is a
- 14:04face forever, even if the sinner falls again into mortal sin.
- 14:08This is not the case with good works. They are
- 14:10reckoned again to a man's account if he makes his
- 14:13peace with God. See how merciful is God Almighty. All right,
- 14:17we will wrap it up there. It's a short one.
- 14:20Maybe I can do another one tomorrow, but it was
- 14:22a short passage. So y'all, I hope you enjoyed this one.
- 14:27Have a good one, and I will ohe never forget
- 14:29the word of Saint Padre Pio. Pray, hope and don't worry,
- 14:32and I'll talk to you next time.
