- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and Forest powered by the Inside the Birds Podcast
- 0:02is brought to you by BET three sixty five.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Whatever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary. At
- 0:06BET three six five.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Adam Kaplin's here today Eagles training Camp, day five. We're
- 0:13taking a closer look Vick Fangio speaking earlier today, We're
- 0:16gonna update the Eagles can't battle through five practices in
- 0:21where they stand or on offense or on defense with
- 0:25the man Adam Kaplan from the Inside the Birds Podcast,
- 0:29who joined us right now on the Sports bast Live
- 0:33on ninety seven to three ESPN.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Adam, what's going on, my man?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, Look, we've been through five practice. It's super hot,
- 0:39typical summer, and we've got some battles. We want to
- 0:43update the battles for the five practice. Obviously, today's in pads,
- 0:46and it's funny that the Eagles started practicing hour earlier.
- 0:49It didn't really matter to her so the heat because
- 0:51by the time practice Senator was over ninety degrees. But
- 0:54bottom line is, coaches love when guys are in pads
- 0:57and it's super hot because then you see how hard
- 1:00guys compete when it's a little bit more stressful.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Well he did vic fango that has brought that up today.
- 1:05He's like, Ah, we're gonna be playing games that are
- 1:07gonna be hot anyway. So if you can't handle this,
- 1:10no good for you. But let's take a look in
- 1:12and update the listeners on some of the camp battles
- 1:14that we have. Let's start on offense, because everybody seems
- 1:16to think about all the defensive battles, but there are
- 1:19some things emerging on the offensive side of the ball
- 1:22Adam kaplan.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So through five.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Practices, we know this is Saquon Barkley's world and all
- 1:27the other running back are just living in it. But
- 1:30there are other guys who have to touch the ball
- 1:32at running back. And how is that materializing right now?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, aj Dillon is taking more way more of the
- 1:39two's with over Shipley. It doesn't mean Mike that it
- 1:45won't be a situational job. So let me break this
- 1:47down for you. It's what advance what we've been talking
- 1:49about in the offseason. You know, as I said in March,
- 1:53Dylan was signed to help out to be a closer.
- 1:56If they have a big lead, go to Dylan, save Barkley.
- 2:00So sure, that's certainly part of it, and we've seen
- 2:02some of that in training camp in terms of getting
- 2:05in early, giving Barkley a break. But what we're also
- 2:08seen Mike Chickley lately is situationally third down, hurry up,
- 2:13red zone if it's if it's inside the ten, you
- 2:17might at the eight yard line. You'll see Barkley's line
- 2:20I see to meet Shipley lineup off set too, hurts
- 2:24his right not directly behind him, and he catches a
- 2:26swing route, catches an angle route. That's something you're never
- 2:29going to do with aj Dillon or I would say
- 2:31almost never. So yeah, that that's that's where this thing
- 2:35could be interesting. And obviously if Barkley couldn't play for
- 2:37some reason, Dylan comes in in terms of heavy volume
- 2:40because this is what the guy can do. Where Shipley
- 2:42you don't know. He's a little bit later then you'd like.
- 2:45In terms of building, it's not as weight. It's just
- 2:47the way that he's built. You have to you have
- 2:48to see with the way he's built, this is a
- 2:49knock from a scouting standpoint with Shipley. Why he dropped
- 2:52to the fourth to flitey his explosiveness, lower body not
- 2:56not real strong, and that's a knock on him, but man,
- 2:58he has got juice. You watch him just turn up
- 3:01the field. But it's no criticism of Dyllany, just they're
- 3:04completely different players, Mike.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah, And there was some talk about Dylan catching the football,
- 3:08you know, out of the backfield. That could be something
- 3:11that adds to it as well. Right, yeah, absolutely, but
- 3:13it's it's something that we haven't seen them do in
- 3:16this offense a whole heck of a lot.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I don't know why this would be the year, but
- 3:19maybe well, look.
- 3:21Speaker 3: They did with Barkley a little bit last year. You
- 3:22saw Week one the pass that he caught over the
- 3:29linebacker for the Packers, which is a great throw and
- 3:31a great play. Yeah, you know, it's funny. We've talked
- 3:35about what happened two years ago when Jandre Swift seemed
- 3:39like cost fifty passes in training camp and then was
- 3:41barely used in the past game. He became over running
- 3:43back of a runner. Rich. Look, if you want to
- 3:45go by what you see, it sometimes you what you
- 3:49see is not what you get and that was an
- 3:50example of it.
- 3:52Speaker 2: All right, Adam.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It sounds like listening to Nick Sirianni on Monday, that
- 3:56really there isn't much of a competition at right guard. Now,
- 3:59he didn't come out say that, but tyler Stein seemingly
- 4:02has taken almost all of the reps and nobody else
- 4:05is getting any first team reps.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah, the only question Mike is who's the backup right
- 4:09guard right now? It's either gonna be Matt Pryor or
- 4:13Darrin Cannard. Both have got work in there. Trevor Keagan
- 4:17is getting work at center, left guard. Don't know how
- 4:19much we see him at right guard. So yeah, that's you.
- 4:23Breck Tooth is the backup center right now when when
- 4:27Jurgens is not in and which is a lot by
- 4:29the way, they're really he's there, they're limiting his reps
- 4:31with coming up back surgery. I totally get that. And
- 4:33Drew Kennell is the third string center, and I don't
- 4:35see him playing guard at this level. He can do
- 4:38it because he's playing it, but he's he's more of
- 4:40he's more built for center. So yeah, that that's it, Mike.
- 4:44I mean with the offensive line, we kind of it's
- 4:46it's starting to round into shape, O, right, Mike, it's
- 4:48kind of. Kennel Lamb is clearly the backup uh, swing tackle.
- 4:53Miles Hinton has got some work at both left and
- 4:55right tackle. Kenna Lamb is clearly ahead of.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Miles Inton, all right, So Tyler Stein se to be
- 5:00winning that spot. There was a question asked yesterday. I
- 5:02think Jeff Mosher asked the question actually about the backup
- 5:05center spot because last year Steen went to left guard
- 5:09when Dickerson went to center. It sounds like it might
- 5:12be that way again, that Dickerson would be the center,
- 5:15and that there's such a plethora of guards in this
- 5:17mix that somebody would have to go if that ended
- 5:20up happening, that Jurgens miss time again, right, Is that
- 5:22what you're reading?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Sure? I would think that's the way with name because
- 5:26no offense to the other two guys. I mean, look,
- 5:30they got three weeks left plus a preseason proved that
- 5:33that's not the case, Mike. But Lamont Texas is the
- 5:36best backup center. That's just the way it is now.
- 5:39Long term, Mike. The Eagles are really hopeful that Drew
- 5:43Kendall number sixty six, You might remember his dad, Pete.
- 5:45Both went to bus in college. The hope is that
- 5:48Drew Kennel will be Jurgens' long term backup, but we
- 5:50got a ways to go here.
- 5:52Speaker 1: All right, let's go to another battle possibly emerging. I
- 5:55I know about battle, but the depth at wide receiver,
- 5:58we know it's Brown and it is his age. It's
- 6:00a Brown and Smith and then h you know Johann Dotson.
- 6:03But after that anybody else standing out?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:07Speaker 3: John Dodson is the three. But you know it's a shame.
- 6:09Terrace Marshall at a lower body injury. The first TAF
- 6:11for practice will we'll we'll learn more. They're off to
- 6:14I mean they have a walk through to Marshall. We'll
- 6:16learn more Thursday morning. But Terres Marshall has been the
- 6:18story of camp. Really, they're off season. Mike, we've talked
- 6:20about him a lot. This is his fourteen. It's amazing.
- 6:24I totally forgot it is with the Niners very briefly.
- 6:27So this is an wonderful opportunity for him. Let's hope
- 6:30he's not out long. One of the really cool stories
- 6:33Mike is number eighty two Ania Smith and a Nia
- 6:36Smith when and they've they've run a lot eleven personnel,
- 6:39which is three receivers won back one ted end. Nia
- 6:41Smith has pretty much been and we know with DeVante
- 6:45Smith out with the bruce back that Dotson is filling
- 6:50in for Davonte Smith. A nice Smith is the first
- 6:54receiver off the bench when they go eleven. He's in
- 6:56the slot in Dotson's za, So a nice Smith. Now, look,
- 7:00he last year was kind of a red shirt year
- 7:02for him. Let's be honest about he never is really healthy.
- 7:05He's not nursing anything. He's out dropping passes. He's also
- 7:08returning punts in practice. So this guy is he's got
- 7:12a lot of ability. It's a fifth round pick last year. Really,
- 7:15he's what we call power slow was the term we
- 7:17were told, so we'll use that one. He's very strong
- 7:20physically for a slot receiver. And Scott the Eagles are
- 7:23really excited about.
- 7:25Speaker 1: All right, one more at tight end because that was
- 7:27the story of the off season. And then Grant, excuse me,
- 7:31Dallas Goddard came back. You got Grant cal Kutara who's returning.
- 7:34But there's a lot of new faces at tight end.
- 7:36What is the battle who would be the guy behind
- 7:40Dallas Goddard?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Right now, Calcultar is clearly the two. Now this is
- 7:45the first full week of practice, so we're not running
- 7:47with this yet, but he clearly is in the lead.
- 7:51And Harrison Brian I know the Eagles were excited about
- 7:54kind of Grants. It's a little different from both of
- 7:55those other guys. Grant is more like Calcuterra than Harrison
- 7:59Brian is. And Eh Penkins second verted receiver who's been
- 8:02here a while. Mike, uh, and you know he's put
- 8:05weight on. I know Andrew Decheco had told us that
- 8:09I'm just talks with Jenkins that he puts some weight on.
- 8:11So we'll see what happens with Jenkins. But the hope
- 8:14is that one of these guys really pushes Calcatarra, but
- 8:17it hasn't happened yet.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Let's go to the defense, Adam kaplan here football at four,
- 8:21looking at the five excuse me, five practices so far,
- 8:25looking at some of the position battles. Let's go to
- 8:28edge where everybody's intrigued by this because apparently they have
- 8:31Lawrence Taylor in Jale's Hunt over there.
- 8:35Speaker 2: But who's he's holding off?
- 8:36Speaker 1: Aziz O Zallari and Josh how did they factor in
- 8:40right now?
- 8:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really not a battle. Mike Hunt is clearly starting.
- 8:45It's the question, is of course less something changes. The
- 8:49question is now, and this has happened in the last
- 8:51couple of days. Josh Ucha after o Jalari. The first
- 8:55three practices was clearly the three was. It was just
- 8:59a matter of Ojelari and how and how they're going
- 9:01to rotate hunt. And now josh Ucha is getting reps
- 9:05over Ojelari. So this is something to watch here. Joshua
- 9:09had it. You know, it's been three years since he
- 9:10was really a relevant player. Last two were not very good.
- 9:13So he's on his thirteen and three years. But this
- 9:15guy's got talent. Mike, he's not sound like he's old.
- 9:18And O Jelari he goes like this table last year.
- 9:20That's why they sign him and guaranteed his entire one
- 9:22year contract. But he's got to prove it. I mean,
- 9:24he's got to prove that he's got juice left. So
- 9:26we'll have to see what happens. But that one has
- 9:28got a little bit more interesting. And then the Obo
- 9:31Conker he's there too. He's look pretty good so far
- 9:34from what I understand.
- 9:34Speaker 1: All right, I like ojeluris signing, by the way, so
- 9:37I think that one will be one to keep an
- 9:40eye on. Let's go to inside linebacker where you know
- 9:42Dean is out, So then what we've got the rookie
- 9:45Johide Campbell. Jeremiah Trotter's name has been coming up a
- 9:48lot here recently. So how does that inside linebacker spot
- 9:51next to Zach Bond who did not practice today.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Look, yeah, with Bond dealing with an injury. So what
- 9:57they what they had done previously previously today to to
- 10:01today was Dean when barnwo need arrest, Dean would go
- 10:06to the mic position and Campbell would go to the
- 10:09will and that's exactly what they did today. Trotter's having
- 10:12a very good camf. You know, here's the thing that
- 10:13he makes up for. You know, he's not a great athlete,
- 10:16but he's so instinctual for the position more than John
- 10:18Campbell is, to be honest with you, John Campbell's splash player.
- 10:22He's made some really interesting place the first first four
- 10:25or five practices. But Trotter juniors ahead clearly from understanding
- 10:30the defense. And that's what Campbell's got to learn. And
- 10:32smile MONI, he didn't practice yesterday, he'd practice today and
- 10:36look they're down. You know, they were down on depth
- 10:38at inside back or so a lot of guys were
- 10:41rolling in.
- 10:41Speaker 1: There all right, probably one of the higher profile ones
- 10:46in terms of this one's wide open. A lot of
- 10:48these other ones seem like they're either for backup spots
- 10:51or you know, fill ins. This one's a big one.
- 10:54Ringo and Adri Jackson and Ringo got first team reps.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Today. A lot of people say, Jackson's look good. Where's
- 11:00this one stand?
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and Jackson's got better versustially because he could play nickel,
- 11:05he could play inside, he could play outside. So it's
- 11:08very even, Mike. One thing I don't read into from
- 11:11going to practice for nearly twenty seven years. I don't
- 11:13care it takes the first rep. It's sometimes ceremonial, but
- 11:17it's very even, Mike. It would be hard to it
- 11:20would be hard to say one guy's clearly ahead. Reinos
- 11:23had some moments where he didn't make the player got beat,
- 11:28you know, but you love us length. He's got to
- 11:30do better with a ball on the air in the air, Mike.
- 11:32That's that's really his challenge with technique also, but he's
- 11:37also made some play so it's it's very even. He
- 11:40goes like Drurry, Jackson's taping up because they went out
- 11:42of signed him and they brought him in on the
- 11:44low end deal, no doubt about it. But right now
- 11:46it's even and again we've only had five practices. What
- 11:49I like to do is because they five practices this
- 11:51week and it'll be total of eight for two weeks,
- 11:54that's when we're really going to get a better feel
- 11:56for this.
- 11:57Speaker 1: When they asked him about Jackson, did you see him?
- 12:00I didn't really see him. How he signs guys and
- 12:03I just trust him and we'll go with that. So
- 12:06Dori Jackson, Kaylee Ringo. Another one to keep an eye on, obviously,
- 12:10will be the safety spot that is Drew mccouba, the rookie,
- 12:14and Sidney Brown. He was asked about Vic Fangiel was
- 12:17asked about Sidney Brown today, he said, look, he couldn't
- 12:19do anything last year, was way behind the terminology.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Not the same this year.
- 12:23Speaker 1: He's getting to start from Jump Street, So that makes
- 12:25that safety spot very interesting.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and Mike with Macuba's injuries shoulder injury, because he
- 12:33can't take contact right now, once it gets clear for contact,
- 12:35he'll be out there.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Brown's clearly working on the ones and with blanket hip
- 12:39of course, and lewis seen is there Andre SAMs ahead
- 12:43of Lewis Scene, Tristan McCollum, who's now with his third
- 12:46year with the Eagles. So yeah, they're kind of light there,
- 12:49Mike a little bit. It really does look different without
- 12:52one guy being out there. So Andre Samson, guy you know,
- 12:56number thirty one, who was signed US at unterrector free
- 12:58agent last year. The Eagles really like they've kind of
- 13:00developed a little bit behind the scenes. He's kind of
- 13:02a guy that we're gonna watch the rest of training
- 13:04camp here.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I know that's a guy that Andrew likes.
- 13:06Speaker 1: He's been on kind of touting him during his segments
- 13:09on Football at four. That will be on Thursday. This
- 13:11is Adam kaplan.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Of course.
- 13:13Speaker 1: The Eagles open up on Thursday, August the seventh, and
- 13:17they will be right here on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 13:19One other guy, when I ask you about that, wasn't
- 13:21a part of the guys in these battles here, but Marrow.
- 13:24Ojomo has been talked about a lot. He got the
- 13:25first question today. Everybody seems to think, hey, this could
- 13:29be a seamless transition from Milton Williams over tomorrow.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Ojomo.
- 13:34Speaker 3: He's just a different player. Mikey. He's got really good lands.
- 13:37He's explosive, but the only concern really here is how
- 13:42does he hold up against the run because he's just
- 13:44not as powerfully built as Williams. Is a better player.
- 13:47I'm not saying he's not. Williams was good every year
- 13:50with the Eagles, and he became exceptional in the last
- 13:52couple of years. That's why I got a huge deal.
- 13:54That's why three teams are in it for him. But
- 13:57Maro Jomas, a guy the eaglestick, has a really big upside,
- 14:00done a really good job of development. This is his
- 14:02third year, really came into his own last year in
- 14:05his role, playing around third of the snap. So that's
- 14:09a guy, Mike that has really come on here. He seven.
- 14:12He's probably having one of the best camps of any
- 14:13defensive player, to be honest.
- 14:14Speaker 2: With you, keep an eye on that.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I do like what he talked about Jordan Davis today
- 14:18as well, about losing the weight and that should help him,
- 14:21you know, be a lot more effective there. He's lost
- 14:23almost thirty pounds, did Jordan Davis something that Vic Fangio
- 14:27did comment on earlier today?
- 14:29Speaker 2: All right, there you go.
- 14:30Speaker 1: A couple of looks at the battles on both the
- 14:31offense and defensive side of the ball from Adam Kaplan
- 14:34from the Inside of the Birds podcast, and those guys
- 14:36have plenty more coverage on these first five days of
- 14:39training camp.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Thanks Adam, Mike.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Real quick, we've got our daily to check go up
- 14:44on Inside the Birds right now on our podcast version
- 14:46of it, so you can hear Andrews not ites from
- 14:48today's practice.
- 14:49Speaker 1: All right, man, we'll everybody go check that out over
- 14:51at Inside the Birds dot com, available on all podcasting platforms.
- 14:55Speaker 2: There's Adam. He'll be back on Friday.
- 14:56Speaker 1: See you man, all right, Adam Kaplan here on the
- 14:58Sports batt Live on ninety seven three ESPN.
