- 0:00Hey team, welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:02I'm so glad you're here today. This episode I want to talk
- 0:06about planning for joy, planning your joy.
- 0:09We always talk about how to time block and schedule things into
- 0:13your life. And the main reason we talk
- 0:15about any of that is because being prepared to be impactful,
- 0:21being prepared, being consistent, that is one of the
- 0:24best ways to have a great effect.
- 0:27It's also one of the best ways for you to be the creator of
- 0:29your life and actually get what you want in your life.
- 0:32And so I've been thinking about this a lot, especially in light
- 0:38of what's going on in my family's life, what's going on
- 0:41in the world, what's going on for clients.
- 0:44There is so much on our plates. There's so much that we have to
- 0:47think about, so many responsibilities.
- 0:51And just as we plan for those things, just as they are
- 0:55incredibly important to be time blocking and scheduling, we also
- 0:59have to think about planning joy into our lives because we think
- 1:05that joy is just something that falls into our laps and that's
- 1:08the only way that we really experience it.
- 1:10And it can happen that way, absolutely.
- 1:13And that's part of the beautiful thing about life is unexpected
- 1:17things happen, miracles happen, beautiful things happen, But
- 1:21it's not always like that. And if it's something that we
- 1:25want more of, if we want more joy and peace and fulfillment
- 1:29and fun, couldn't we be intentional about it?
- 1:32Couldn't we be just as intentional about planning for
- 1:35it as we are the other things in our life?
- 1:37Why wouldn't that work? It does.
- 1:40It does work. I was recently working with my
- 1:44mastermind group, group of people that I meet with twice a
- 1:47month and we're all working on our businesses and we always
- 1:51meet and talk about the things that are important to us and the
- 1:54plans and the goals. It's awesome.
- 1:57But what I realized is when we recently met in person, everyone
- 2:02was talking about how they were feeling a little bit burned,
- 2:04just a little bit burned out, a little bit tired because
- 2:09everyone in this group is pushing hard and grinding and
- 2:12trying to create this great business and the structure and,
- 2:17and the dream, everything that they're doing is is worthy and
- 2:21beautiful and awesome. But they're feeling a little
- 2:24burned out. And what I noticed and what came
- 2:25up in our conversation is a lot of it's because they're not
- 2:28planning for the fun and the joy in the play.
- 2:31They're so great and just skilled at time blocking and
- 2:35scheduling all of the things that need to be done for the
- 2:39business, for the work aspect, and then also for family, right?
- 2:44But they leave themselves out of the equation so much.
- 2:47And this is particular to this season because there's, you
- 2:50know, everybody's working really hard on specific things, but I
- 2:54noticed it was kind of across the board and I noticed that in
- 2:58my clients as well, they all are pretty high performers.
- 3:02They work really hard. But that thing that is often
- 3:05missing for people is the joy piece.
- 3:08And so I want to talk a little bit more about how to
- 3:10incorporate that. How do we plan for joy?
- 3:13How do we create a space for the stuff that really makes life
- 3:17worthwhile and beautiful? Because really, that's what it's
- 3:20all about. And you hear me say this all the
- 3:22time. All of our pursuits, almost all
- 3:26of our goals, all of the achievements that we're working
- 3:28towards, they're to experience a feeling.
- 3:31And often we want to experience feelings like pride and
- 3:35confidence and achievement, worthiness, joy, excitement,
- 3:41enthusiasm, creativity. We want to experience those
- 3:44feelings. What is stopping us from
- 3:46experiencing them now? That's the big question.
- 3:49We should be experiencing them now.
- 3:51That is what life is about. And we don't know what life
- 3:55holds for us. We can't say how much time we
- 3:57have left. We don't know if we have 40
- 3:59years or 10 years or a year. And so to delay the stuff that
- 4:04life is all about, it just seems crazy to me.
- 4:07And yet we do it all the time. One of my best friends, his name
- 4:11is Mark. We have this saying that we use
- 4:14together. And it's often us saying we need
- 4:17to get a carrot on the schedule or we'll say I need a carrot or
- 4:21yeah, let's plan this. That's going to be a great
- 4:23carrot. And what we're referencing is
- 4:25that idea of a horse being encouraged to keep moving along
- 4:30because you're hanging a carrot in front of its face.
- 4:32And so we're calling these moments of fun and joy and play.
- 4:36We we refer to it as the carrot. And so we'll often be texting
- 4:40with each other and saying like, hey dude, we got to get a carrot
- 4:44on the schedule. And it's our language for how we
- 4:47plan for joy. And it's silly, but we know
- 4:50exactly what we mean when we're texting back and forth about it.
- 4:54Mark is one of the hardest working guys I know.
- 4:56He's gotten a million projects happening at once and he
- 4:59recognizes the importance of having a carrot on the schedule.
- 5:03And same for me. It's something that we
- 5:05intentionally try to plan. There's a lot of power to that
- 5:10and it speaks to the fact that we don't want to be working all
- 5:12the time. We can't always be in the
- 5:15structured, levelled framework of the world where we produce
- 5:19and we create and we follow a plan.
- 5:21We have to have these infusions of joy and play and fun.
- 5:25You know, people always like to call it work life balance.
- 5:27I don't know if there ever is a true balance, and I'm actually
- 5:32really OK with that now. I just think we have to find the
- 5:35right mix for us in every season of our life, for our family, for
- 5:41what fills us up, what makes us feel purposeful and allows us to
- 5:46feel like we're the creators of our lives.
- 5:49So how do you plan for joy? That's often the question that
- 5:51people ask me. It's not difficult.
- 5:54It's the same way that you would time block or schedule anything
- 5:57in your life. The first thing I would say is
- 5:59to identify what brings you joy. What is important to you in this
- 6:03season of your life? What is it that makes you feel
- 6:07light, makes you feel like the best version of yourself, makes
- 6:12you feel like you are operating in a high frequency?
- 6:15When you can figure that out, then you can start to identify
- 6:19where to plug it into your schedule.
- 6:21So the first step is figure out what brings you joy.
- 6:23Second step, communicate that. Communicate it to your spouse,
- 6:28your kids, whoever you need to tell so that you can be on the
- 6:32same page about, hey, this is really worthy to me right now.
- 6:35This is important to me. We need to prioritize these
- 6:38things. You know, there's times in, in
- 6:42my life where Leanne and I have looked at each other and we just
- 6:45say, you know what, we need to have a little bit more fun.
- 6:48Even recently she was like, I need to have more fun.
- 6:50And it's true because we've been working at a pace that's really
- 6:55fast and hard. We're dealing with, you know,
- 6:58breast cancer treatment and all this stuff that's really heavy
- 7:01and we need to be infusing more of the joy and more of the fun
- 7:05into our life. And she's right.
- 7:07We got to schedule it. So this is just another reminder
- 7:09for us that we need to prioritize that kind of work.
- 7:13And then the third thing, really simple, put it on the damn
- 7:16calendar. Put it on the calendar.
- 7:19It doesn't have to be a big trip.
- 7:21It doesn't have to be a big getaway.
- 7:23It can just be the little things.
- 7:25But if you schedule them, they're much more likely to
- 7:28happen, like 80% more likely to happen when you put them on the
- 7:32calendar. This stuff works, guys.
- 7:35It really does. We just have to be intentional
- 7:37and thoughtful about what it is that's important to us.
- 7:40And I know that the work and the progress and the pursuits, I
- 7:45know how important those are, but I also know how important it
- 7:47is to be present and enjoy in your life.
- 7:53And we just have to prioritize it.
- 7:55So I would say my challenge to you this week is to discover
- 8:00what is the carrot for you. Can you schedule and plan to
- 8:05have a few carrots on your calendar for yourself, for your
- 8:08family, so that you don't get that burned out feeling and you
- 8:12can really enjoy every day of your life and not just the days
- 8:16where you feel like you've done enough or you've hit that
- 8:18milestone. That's not what a life is about
- 8:21really. You can mine it out every single
- 8:23day, feel the joy, experience a little bit of fun, and it's just
- 8:27a matter of being intentional about it.
- 8:29So I hope that's helpful today, find the carrots, figure out
- 8:33what brings you joy and put them on the calendar, See what
- 8:36happens. I'm really excited.
- 8:38I'm so glad you're here. Thank you for listening.
- 8:40And as always, thank you for being ready to impact.
