Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yo bouleg cap podcast man special guests here a legend
- 0:03Speaker 1: man Steve Rifkin is in the building. Good to see you, bro,
- 0:07Speaker 1: you keV Yes, sir, what's going on? Ran into you
- 0:09Speaker 1: at the Wu Tang show show at dinner a few Yeah, Yeah,
- 0:12Speaker 1: for sure, it's good to see you.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You're you're a legend. Like I don't say that like lightly.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I remember like growing up, like reading about you and
- 0:18Speaker 1: like the Source and Double X Ship.
- 0:20Speaker 3: And man, I'm just me, like, you know, just give
- 0:26Speaker 3: me some good music, good basketball game to watch. I'm happy.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, did you did you watch the last
- 0:31Speaker 1: night's game?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Was at the Arena, but I did see it. It
- 0:35Speaker 3: was heartbreaking, man, when Halliburton went down. So you know,
- 0:38Speaker 3: it's it's it's funny. I I told my achilles round six, okay.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And I'm granted I'm a lot older, right right right,
- 0:48Speaker 3: but I'm not in shape. So when he said strain
- 0:55Speaker 3: in his calf, there should be a new like how
- 0:58Speaker 3: they have to they have a concussion, they should the
- 1:00Speaker 3: same thing they should happened Tatum not only well I
- 1:05Speaker 3: don't know if Tatum was hurt, but uh the kid
- 1:08Speaker 3: on Milwaukee Damien, right, he had a blood clot everything
- 1:12Speaker 3: else like that, and then if you have a strained calf,
- 1:16Speaker 3: you should sit out like a month. It should definitely
- 1:18Speaker 3: be a month. And you know, both my son's a
- 1:21Speaker 3: high level ballplayer. One played but number one high school
- 1:25Speaker 3: team in the country. The other one played at the
- 1:28Speaker 3: one basketball And they said, man, like, because I'm playing
- 1:33Speaker 3: game six and seven, like I'd rather sit out of
- 1:35Speaker 3: yet like this is you know, yeah, I think like
- 1:38Speaker 3: in that spot.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean they I think they talked to him before
- 1:41Speaker 1: the game too, and he essentially was like, I understand
- 1:44Speaker 1: the risk, but it's game seven and and imagine if
- 1:47Speaker 1: he didn't play, they lose the season. There's that regret,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but it's like, now you know he's going to be
- 1:54Speaker 1: out a year.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Definitely out of year.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy, And yeah.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I've never met him, but I I've only heard I
- 2:01Speaker 3: love his game and even though they beat the Knicks,
- 2:07Speaker 3: he's a beast.
- 2:08Speaker 1: He is a beast man, and he's like, That's what
- 2:10Speaker 1: I like about like him and Brunson is they're not
- 2:14Speaker 1: like they feel like very very like modest superstars, if
- 2:19Speaker 1: that makes sense.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, I'm Brunson is modest and he's right. I'm
- 2:24Speaker 3: not a fan of his dad's and I'm not a
- 2:26Speaker 3: fan of Brunson's game. Fair, I don't think. I don't
- 2:29Speaker 3: think the Knicks will win a championship with him as
- 2:31Speaker 3: the point guard.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's very It's yeah, it is very. He's all heavy
- 2:34Speaker 1: ball centric.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It's very. It's very James Harden. And as great as
- 2:39Speaker 3: Harden is and as great as Brunson is, he's not
- 2:42Speaker 3: gonna he he dripples the wall too much, he shoots
- 2:44Speaker 3: too much. You know, I'm an old school point guard, right.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So it's though, oh there's no question about because he
- 2:53Speaker 3: thinks about passing.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It's like he can affect the game in so many
- 2:56Speaker 1: different ways, even if he you know, if he has
- 2:58Speaker 1: fourteen points, but he's got all these Yeah, not for sure.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Now that was a sad, sad day.
- 3:04Speaker 3: But no, it was how I when I saw it,
- 3:06Speaker 3: I was like like the first time that you could
- 3:09Speaker 3: actually there was no sound where, but you actually saw
- 3:14Speaker 3: what you saw it, saw it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And then you see him like when you see his
- 3:18Speaker 1: because he knows exactly what happened.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Oh it was heart broad. He was on a tear.
- 3:22Speaker 3: He had he had three three streets yeah, long threes.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was crazy man. So obviously, man, you're somebody
- 3:29Speaker 1: who you know is like one of the few people
- 3:31Speaker 1: who I feel like is responsible for helping shape like
- 3:36Speaker 1: so much of like hip hop history. Like I think
- 3:38Speaker 1: in the eighties, we think like Russell Simmons and Rick
- 3:40Speaker 1: Rubin and Deaf Jam and uh. I think at the nineties,
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think of Loud Records, like you know, what you
- 3:49Speaker 1: would was like kind of get take me back to
- 3:51Speaker 1: your roots, because I know in the eighties you had
- 3:52Speaker 1: worked with New Edition, right.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I started in nineteen seventy nine, seventy nine, my dad
- 4:00Speaker 3: on the label called Spring Record. Okay, so that was
- 4:02Speaker 3: fat back then, which put out the first hip hop record,
- 4:06Speaker 3: King Tim the third they had an artist my name
- 4:09Speaker 3: of Joe Simon, and then an artists but name of
- 4:11Speaker 3: Millie Jackson and another artist I'm sure we all heard
- 4:14Speaker 3: of by the name of James Brown of course. So
- 4:21Speaker 3: and we gave Russell his first record with the Jimmy
- 4:24Speaker 3: Spice Dollar Bill. Y'all. Wow. Crazy, So so hip hop
- 4:32Speaker 3: to me, I've known Russell Sinstem seventeen, oh like your
- 4:38Speaker 3: whole life, Yeah, like he would like I didn't know,
- 4:44Speaker 3: you know, Russell is such a creature of habit, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 3: knowing him now and just you know, my dad would
- 4:52Speaker 3: go to lunch every day from one o'clock to two thirty,
- 4:56Speaker 3: but Russell would call every day. I want. But then
- 4:59Speaker 3: he would come speak to me like so I didn't
- 5:01Speaker 3: know if he was. I didn't want to scared to
- 5:04Speaker 3: talk to my dad and just start screaming at me,
- 5:06Speaker 3: you know, whatever it was. And all he kept on,
- 5:09Speaker 3: like for three weeks. No, he would say, w z
- 5:13Speaker 3: A case playing the record, But w za ca'se playing
- 5:15Speaker 3: the record. W Zak's playing the record, So I said,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know, and then I was about to go on
- 5:20Speaker 3: like my first little run at radio. Yeah, but by
- 5:24Speaker 3: myself with that an artists.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Okay, so you were essentially going to hit the road
- 5:27Speaker 1: and just work your records to stations PD yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah so and eventually that's why I ended up putting
- 5:32Speaker 3: the street team together. I'm like seventeen, eighteen years old.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I don't want to hang out with guys even in
- 5:36Speaker 3: their thirties. I mean I was, I was, I mean
- 5:41Speaker 3: a knucklehead to be honest, To be honest with you,
- 5:44Speaker 3: I was just slexic. I didn't know how to read
- 5:45Speaker 3: till I was fourteen, fifteen years old. So it was
- 5:47Speaker 3: like my grandfather called me one day. He says, get
- 5:51Speaker 3: down to Florida. And that's one person that you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I'm scared of three Like my whole life I was
- 5:58Speaker 3: scared of you know, scared of God. I'm scared my
- 6:00Speaker 3: daughter now and my grandfather like he ran that family,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, with like an impist jumped down. I remember
- 6:09Speaker 3: getting on an Eastern Airlines flight at a JFK landed
- 6:14Speaker 3: in Fort Lauderdale, picked me up. When did Denny said,
- 6:18Speaker 3: you canna end up beater in jail? You picked a choice,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and this is when you're seventeen, might have just turned eighty.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Okay, okay, he goes, it doesn't pay to be a
- 6:29Speaker 4: gangst trust me, right, And but I said, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 4: and I said, look, he goes, don't look at me.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Right, that's crazy. But for you, it was like you
- 6:43Speaker 1: feel like that was like a fork in the road,
- 6:45Speaker 1: like if your grandpa maybe hadn't.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Have I would have been beater in jail.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, because you weren't like would you say that?
- 6:52Speaker 3: The funny thing is kept I didn't need to steal,
- 6:55Speaker 3: like I came like my dad had one of his
- 6:57Speaker 3: most successful independent labels, a vault of all of all time.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I was just doing it to get attention because people
- 7:02Speaker 3: were calling. You know, it's not a great word to
- 7:04Speaker 3: say he's retarded, he's this, he's that. And ball saved
- 7:08Speaker 3: my life as a kid kid, right, basketball basketball, So.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Like that's what you were doing at school to take
- 7:14Speaker 1: your mind off and maybe not being the greatest at.
- 7:16Speaker 3: School, but I really, you know, and like I didn't
- 7:19Speaker 3: know how to read write, you know, I knew how
- 7:21Speaker 3: to write, but I didn't. So it was like nobody
- 7:24Speaker 3: knew what dyslexia was in nineteen seventy eight, right, But no, no,
- 7:30Speaker 3: I was a little bit younger when they found out
- 7:32Speaker 3: that whatever dyslexi.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Is, Like, I got some a couple of family members who.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Nine, yes, seventy eight, I was sixteen, right, So so
- 7:42Speaker 3: you go and see Grandpa in Florida. He goes, he
- 7:45Speaker 3: goes go work, he goes go work for your dad
- 7:47Speaker 3: and uncle Roy, my dad and uncle brothers in your partner.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I was like, when I walk in, they run, he goes,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I'll talk to him, right, So I fly home the
- 7:58Speaker 3: next day to weeks later, the household rings again, but
- 8:01Speaker 3: there's no cell phones, there's nothing. He goes, pick me
- 8:04Speaker 3: up the airport to say, afternoon for thirty Grandpa Grandpa. Okay,
- 8:08Speaker 3: so he flies them. Grandpa flies with an entourage. Okay,
- 8:16Speaker 3: some bodyguards this, right. So it was like, your grandpa's
- 8:19Speaker 3: like a guy. Oh he was a real guy. Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 3: So I picked him, but he only had one guy
- 8:25Speaker 3: with him. Usually three or four, he had one guy
- 8:29Speaker 3: with him. He goes, all right, we're going into the city.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I think, like, I think he forgot about what he
- 8:36Speaker 3: told me, and I think we're doing something. He's picking
- 8:40Speaker 3: you up, I'm picking him up, and I'm thinking, like
- 8:42Speaker 3: we're about to go get into some ship. Yeah, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm happy as a pig, and shit right,
- 8:49Speaker 3: I'm thinking he forgot the conversation Grandpa. Let's go. So
- 8:55Speaker 3: I'm like, where we're going. He goes, We're going to
- 8:57Speaker 3: Daddy's building. A little disappointing for you. Yeah, I was like,
- 9:04Speaker 3: ah fuck, he goes. I go, what are we doing
- 9:06Speaker 3: that for? He goes, we're sitting down with him and
- 9:09Speaker 3: Uncle Rod. Yeah. I remember our talk as much as
- 9:13Speaker 3: you want me to forget it. And you know, my
- 9:18Speaker 3: uncle was older than my dad, and like he said, like,
- 9:22Speaker 3: don't funck this up. Mhm.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It's crazy too, because man, I feel like back then
- 9:28Speaker 1: you saw the music. I mean even in the nineties,
- 9:31Speaker 1: but but then it was very much like I always
- 9:34Speaker 1: hear these stories about like you know, like in the
- 9:38Speaker 1: like seventies and eighties, like sometimes like program directors would
- 9:43Speaker 1: get like like a lot of rock pds would take
- 9:45Speaker 1: like an eight ball of cocaine to add a record.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yeah, or like it was like the wild Wild West
- 9:50Speaker 3: for real, they would get the cleans like you were
- 9:53Speaker 3: payment records sometimes you know, but at the end, at
- 9:57Speaker 3: the end of the day.
- 9:58Speaker 1: But that was like really like though, like the record
- 10:01Speaker 1: business was very like you know, I got in.
- 10:05Speaker 3: It sucks.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I'm thirty eight, and I feel like I got in.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I never got to experience like mix Sure Power Summit
- 10:13Speaker 1: because when it was going on the last few years
- 10:15Speaker 1: that I was relevant, or when I got into the game,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I wasn't relevant enough to even get invited. I was
- 10:21Speaker 1: an intern. So it was like I didn't get to
- 10:24Speaker 1: see before debauchery of like the record industry. I feel
- 10:28Speaker 1: like I got in when it started to kind of
- 10:30Speaker 1: like clean up a little.
- 10:31Speaker 3: So there was a convention called non Convention.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I remember, hey, it still isn't there is?
- 10:35Speaker 3: But then you talk about sex drugs rock and roll? Right,
- 10:39Speaker 3: the sex drugs rock and roll. So before I officially started,
- 10:45Speaker 3: I'm Jewish and norm was always around the Jewish holidays. Okay,
- 10:49Speaker 3: so my grandparents were what lo it and the convention
- 10:55Speaker 3: was always at the Diplomat Hotel Hollywood Flower. Right, So
- 11:00Speaker 3: they take me down and I'm going just setting up
- 11:03Speaker 3: this promotion to off for me to go on this
- 11:05Speaker 3: that whatever. In a few weeks, I was like, wow,
- 11:08Speaker 3: this is like a business, like the most beautiful woman
- 11:10Speaker 3: in the world. And everybody was like I was like,
- 11:15Speaker 3: I was like in heaven, but I you know, I
- 11:16Speaker 3: didn't know, but I was like, all right, you know, yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 1: No, it's it's crazy too because it's like you see
- 11:23Speaker 1: it to exist today and you see even just like
- 11:26Speaker 1: it portrayed like there was that I forget the HBO
- 11:28Speaker 1: show there was Vinyl.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yes, actually that the head of the company. That show
- 11:33Speaker 3: didn't last long, but that character the headed a record
- 11:38Speaker 3: company was based on my dad and two other people,
- 11:41Speaker 3: all all in one, all.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Kind of encapsulated.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Yeah. But the office, how the office looked was exactly
- 11:48Speaker 3: like my dad's office. Did it? Did it? T Wow?
- 11:52Speaker 1: And you So that's so so you're like thrown into
- 11:55Speaker 1: this ship. What do you What is your first job
- 11:58Speaker 1: for your dad's label?
- 11:58Speaker 3: Is it promotion? You're doing promo?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Like you're hitting the streets like, hey, son, I need
- 12:04Speaker 1: you to go visit this program director. Yeah, I need
- 12:06Speaker 1: to go on this run. We gotta go see this
- 12:07Speaker 1: college radio station.
- 12:08Speaker 3: It wasn't even college. There was I mean there was
- 12:10Speaker 3: college radio. I would end up going back to college radio.
- 12:13Speaker 3: But it was just literally like starting Mobile Alabama going
- 12:16Speaker 3: to WBLK.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Right, it's crazy, right.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And there's no GPS, there's no anything. And I don't
- 12:22Speaker 3: even really know how to read. There's no cell phone
- 12:24Speaker 3: in a car, in a car by myself with like
- 12:27Speaker 3: fifty hours worth of quarters to call the radio station.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I'm here, Birmingham. How do I get to Mobile Alabama?
- 12:34Speaker 3: Can you?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Oh my? It's so funny because like we're so spoiled
- 12:37Speaker 1: where we think about, like I even think about like
- 12:40Speaker 1: how far away we are from like the map quest days.
- 12:43Speaker 1: We used to be able to print direction. Yeah, but
- 12:44Speaker 1: when I was a little kid, my dad used to
- 12:46Speaker 1: buy a fucking at list from the gas station and
- 12:48Speaker 1: then just try to figure it out, like you know
- 12:50Speaker 1: what I mean, It's damn that's crazy. So you end
- 12:53Speaker 1: up doing promotion. What would you say outside of your
- 12:56Speaker 1: dad's label, what was your first kind of break in
- 12:59Speaker 1: the business where you were able to kind of it
- 13:02Speaker 1: starts to create your own legacy.
- 13:05Speaker 3: So I'm living out here and what year six? Okay,
- 13:14Speaker 3: actually I just told my first apartment I was negative
- 13:16Speaker 3: one years old at the time. So I took a
- 13:18Speaker 3: picture on my way here at the first apartment I
- 13:22Speaker 3: ever had? Was it in the valleys six o five
- 13:24Speaker 3: Kowango Boulevard? Oh yeah, right, but like right off of Riverside.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Hey, want to give a shout out to our newest sponsor.
- 13:31Speaker 1: You know, I don't like to vape unless it is
- 13:34Speaker 1: pure solventless rosin. I want to give a shout out
- 13:37Speaker 1: to Brokencannabis dot Com. Go give them a follow. It's
- 13:41Speaker 1: nothing but that good gas. Check them out at your
- 13:43Speaker 1: local dispensary. Brokencannabis dot Com. Salute to them. Let's get
- 13:48Speaker 1: back to the interview.
- 13:48Speaker 3: So you moved to la in eighty six eighty six
- 13:51Speaker 3: in the valley in the valley Flus six oh five
- 13:53Speaker 3: Cowanngo Boulevard right off for Riverside, there's a seven. There's
- 13:57Speaker 3: a seven to eleven right there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
- 14:00Speaker 3: know exactly where that is. My best friend lived on
- 14:02Speaker 3: the first floor. Me and my girlfriend lived on the
- 14:04Speaker 3: second floor, and she was an actress and somebody on this.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Was the plan. Like when you say I'm going to
- 14:08Speaker 1: move to La, did you already have?
- 14:10Speaker 3: I was. I was managing New Addition, okay, which is
- 14:13Speaker 3: a big deal in eighty six, right, that's fucking huge.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So we were making the any Heartbreak album.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Wow, So it just made sense. Hey, I got to
- 14:22Speaker 1: get out to La. It makes more sense.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Well, I also fell in love for the first time.
- 14:27Speaker 3: It happens, leve will make you move, Yeah, it definitely will,
- 14:30Speaker 3: especially an actress where else you're going to live there,
- 14:33Speaker 3: So you're out here and I guess you know it's
- 14:38Speaker 3: interesting too because in eighty six that's pre n w
- 14:42Speaker 3: A right, it was yeah like two years before NWA right,
- 14:46Speaker 3: So at that time it's like ice Teas out, Ice
- 14:49Speaker 3: Teas out, so two shorts out ish So I started.
- 14:53Speaker 3: So what happened was when I when I moved New
- 14:56Speaker 3: Addition fired us like maybe five months after I got
- 14:59Speaker 3: out here. Oh break, It's all right, And I hook
- 15:03Speaker 3: up with a company called Delicious Final legendary company. Right,
- 15:06Speaker 3: So Young MC tone lok, I guess was that eighty
- 15:10Speaker 3: seven eighty eight?
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah, people always like to pass over tone look like.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Wild Thing and Funky Colemandina, you know.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Starting blank check. Yeah.
- 15:21Speaker 3: And then Young MC would bus to move so I
- 15:24Speaker 3: would promote the records and I would put the little
- 15:28Speaker 3: street team together and go on. So I started making
- 15:32Speaker 3: a name for myself. So I hadn't took three thousand dollars.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I wasn't loaded. I took three thousand dollars and I
- 15:41Speaker 3: made a like a pamphlet and I had to go
- 15:44Speaker 3: to New York for a wedding and I was gonna
- 15:47Speaker 3: stay in New York, and I sent it out to
- 15:48Speaker 3: every head of promotion pop Urban. There was no rap
- 15:51Speaker 3: department in those days, Brian, When did you start, Gavin?
- 15:55Speaker 3: I got around nineteen ninety. I sent at these pamphlets
- 16:02Speaker 3: and and you're sitting in the radio. I'm sending into
- 16:05Speaker 3: record labels to get business, okay, got it? So essentially
- 16:07Speaker 3: because you I'm starting his street team and then set
- 16:11Speaker 3: the promo online, right, so and we're doing heavy Gavin
- 16:16Speaker 3: was it CMJ? Right? It was you? And right it
- 16:20Speaker 3: was Gavin CMJ Street Team Mix Show and I and
- 16:24Speaker 3: I also one of my best friends was to head
- 16:26Speaker 3: a programming at MTV. So YO started well, we gave
- 16:31Speaker 3: YO their first real video that broke out was the
- 16:34Speaker 3: Home Local wild Thing video. But make a long story short,
- 16:39Speaker 3: I come back with two hundred thousand dollars.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Worth of business off of that three thousand dollars investment.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and I hired the guy the name of Malik Levy.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Malik worked with me for like three or four months
- 16:55Speaker 3: and then he wanted to go in more into an
- 16:58Speaker 3: R and he introduced me to guy him with Fae Duvenet. Okay,
- 17:02Speaker 3: and that's when things started to really roll for us.
- 17:04Speaker 3: There was no lawed at the time.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And because I think a lot of people have a
- 17:09Speaker 1: misconception about Loud because it's obviously such a closed label.
- 17:12Speaker 3: It started here, but it started here eighty three sixty Melrows.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And now was was your first artist Aloud? The Licks?
- 17:20Speaker 1: No Twister, Twister, the Twist and the speed not mobsters
- 17:24Speaker 1: right or was it just twisted Twister?
- 17:27Speaker 3: Interesting and we had Tupac at the same time, right
- 17:30Speaker 3: Bryan to Apocalypse.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Well, I wanted to talk to you because you also,
- 17:37Speaker 1: you know, when we were hanging out, I didn't know
- 17:39Speaker 1: that Tupac was your roommate for a short time.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so we would go on the road.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Well, for I wanted the genesis of you and pox relationship.
- 17:49Speaker 3: It was he worked like he wasn't like he was.
- 17:53Speaker 3: He was a true worker. My first office before we
- 17:56Speaker 3: moved to the Big office eighty three sixty Melrows, we
- 17:58Speaker 3: had an office at seven for North Gardner, right across
- 18:02Speaker 3: Nipsey's burger spot as they now. But he used to
- 18:04Speaker 3: be a Johnny Rockets. Yeah, and we used to be
- 18:06Speaker 3: right across the street and the room was half the size,
- 18:10Speaker 3: and it would be me, Fade and Lisa, who ended
- 18:15Speaker 3: up being Fade's wife Crazy and my girl, the girl
- 18:19Speaker 3: who I moved out for a system. Yeah, and then
- 18:22Speaker 3: Park would come to the office. We'd all sit on
- 18:24Speaker 3: the floor, smoke cigarettes and chip out his rackets.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Wow, that's crazy. So you're he was like a client
- 18:33Speaker 1: of yours.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Essentially, Well, in a scope, he was signed to Interscope
- 18:36Speaker 3: directly through a Trian Gregory, but then the Interscope would
- 18:38Speaker 3: hire you to they gave me, they gave us our
- 18:41Speaker 3: first retainer. So your first retainer ever was for two Apocalypse.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Now, yeah, that's so crazy.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Was you know?
- 18:49Speaker 1: What's interesting because Tupac is such a like a I
- 18:53Speaker 1: feel like he has so many errors of he has
- 18:56Speaker 1: short life. But from a fan's perspective, there's so many
- 18:59Speaker 1: like errors of like Tupac and how we kind of
- 19:01Speaker 1: know him right, Like by all accounts I heard, he
- 19:05Speaker 1: was a hard worker and he was a sweet dude
- 19:08Speaker 1: to deal with, like he was a nice guy.
- 19:10Speaker 3: We never had a problem. I mean, Brian, when we
- 19:14Speaker 3: brought him up every time to see you, was there
- 19:16Speaker 3: ever a problem? Oh yeah, yeah, that's crazy.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Tupac was seventeen eighteen.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Yeah damn.
- 19:28Speaker 1: And so how does he end up how do you
- 19:30Speaker 1: guys end up getting close enough to where he he
- 19:32Speaker 1: ends up crashing at your spot?
- 19:33Speaker 3: So we would go on the road from Thursday to
- 19:35Speaker 3: Sunday or Thursday to Monday, just working the record, working
- 19:39Speaker 3: the record, and then we would have to leave again
- 19:43Speaker 3: on Thursday. So instead of him going back home, he
- 19:45Speaker 3: would just crash it at the house. Wow. And I
- 19:48Speaker 3: didn't take him all like fade would take him somebody
- 19:50Speaker 3: would like, but he would always like whenever they landed,
- 19:54Speaker 3: like he would just And.
- 19:55Speaker 1: At that time, your guys is like probably in at
- 19:58Speaker 1: these like when it comes a radio or Whoever's like,
- 20:01Speaker 1: oh no, no, the kid from the Digital Underground record.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Like that was like that was our story.
- 20:06Speaker 1: That was like how you kicked the door, Like no,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you know Humpty, this is the kid from the Humpty record.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Like that's so wild, man. It's interesting. So you work
- 20:14Speaker 1: with Tupac, that's your first retainer. Who's the first like
- 20:19Speaker 1: record contract where when the album comes out Loud Records
- 20:25Speaker 1: is on the back of the album Twist of the
- 20:27Speaker 1: Twist album I'm Twisted, Yeah, And and at that time
- 20:33Speaker 1: it's interesting because there was like a a real I
- 20:37Speaker 1: would say, like the Midwest was known for bone Thugs.
- 20:41Speaker 1: There was like a well there was no bone Thugs.
- 20:43Speaker 1: There wasn't so.
- 20:44Speaker 3: This is this is ninety two. Well that's what I
- 20:46Speaker 3: was gonna say.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It's funny because I feel like people get it fucked
- 20:49Speaker 1: up because there was that like weird like rivalry between
- 20:53Speaker 1: Twist and Bone. But it was like Twist it was
- 20:55Speaker 1: before Bone.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Way before Bone, and I mean to me it was
- 20:58Speaker 3: Twist and Common. Yeah, but they weren't. I don't think
- 21:03Speaker 3: they were competitive. Well, it was very different too.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I mean they were both out of Chicago and Son.
- 21:08Speaker 3: And right around the same time.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Resurrection is one of my favorite ones. Damn. So
- 21:13Speaker 1: you go from Twist and then then.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It's the Licks, then it's a group called Madcap out
- 21:18Speaker 3: of Pasadena, and then the Licks, then will what was uh?
- 21:24Speaker 3: And then East Swift was was he was with me?
- 21:28Speaker 3: He was with me when Riza just showed up out
- 21:30Speaker 3: of Noah. We were in New York getting ready for.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Something breakdown because you know, obviously we just went to
- 21:36Speaker 1: the Wu Tang's Final Chapter tour, which was so amazingly sequenced.
- 21:40Speaker 1: They did such a good job putting that show together
- 21:41Speaker 1: because I was like, damn, two hours, there's so much
- 21:45Speaker 1: records to do. They did such a good job. They
- 21:47Speaker 1: come the beginning of that show out your face off. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you you hear this music. It's unlike anything else, right,
- 21:58Speaker 1: there's nothing. There's nothing that has ever sounded like thirty
- 22:02Speaker 1: six Chambers at that time.
- 22:05Speaker 3: There's nothing that's like it.
- 22:09Speaker 1: What was your initial like, did you have to be
- 22:11Speaker 1: sold on it or why.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Didn't have to be sold on it. Trevor Williams, who
- 22:17Speaker 3: was he would end up doing college radio for US
- 22:21Speaker 3: found found it, gave it to me and I was like,
- 22:24Speaker 3: protect your neck, protect your neck. Yeah, and I'm like,
- 22:26Speaker 3: there's no hook. He was the ship's fire called Jason
- 22:31Speaker 3: Stayton at of whatever he was out of, like Flint, Michigan,
- 22:35Speaker 3: and it's lighting up, it's slighting up the phones like crazy,
- 22:39Speaker 3: and so I was like, all right, cool, I'm trying
- 22:42Speaker 3: to get in touch with Rizzy. He was Prince Raquem
- 22:44Speaker 3: at the time, and he's not picking up the phone.
- 22:46Speaker 3: There's no answering machine. And then I'm in New York
- 22:49Speaker 3: with my thirty first birthday. I think we were having
- 22:51Speaker 3: an album release party for Madcap and they just showed
- 22:54Speaker 3: up and I was introducing Eastwift was up there. I
- 23:00Speaker 3: was introducing everybody at RCAA.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Crazy and then Wu Tang shows up. Do they do
- 23:07Speaker 1: they have the like what's the aura of like that
- 23:12Speaker 1: that that like late like I guess time period of
- 23:16Speaker 1: like do they feel like d own ship?
- 23:19Speaker 3: There's like nine dudes and they all like like how
- 23:21Speaker 3: are they moving? Like there's nine And again I'm in
- 23:23Speaker 3: a guest office. All right, more than nine, by the way,
- 23:25Speaker 3: because it's not just like they're just the nine. There's
- 23:27Speaker 3: no no, there was just it was the group. Oh okay,
- 23:29Speaker 3: they think we play the record, and they performed the
- 23:31Speaker 3: record like in a in a guest office. Somebody comes
- 23:35Speaker 3: right to this day, Me and Riz a joke about
- 23:37Speaker 3: it all the time. Did you set me up? Or
- 23:38Speaker 3: is that somebody from the mail room that I've never
- 23:40Speaker 3: seen ever again? Some guy you know, in a mail room.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Aufid comespodging. He says, that's that ship punches his hand
- 23:48Speaker 3: like that's that ship stormed out. I've never seen this
- 23:51Speaker 3: guy ever again. That's crazy. And they came to the
- 23:57Speaker 3: Madcap Party. They took over the party and in New York,
- 24:02Speaker 3: and I was like, I gotta figure. I just gotta
- 24:04Speaker 3: do whatever it takes to get them. So when riz
- 24:06Speaker 3: Is said, you know, we want to do these solo records,
- 24:10Speaker 3: I went through something like this with new addition, when
- 24:13Speaker 3: Ralph wanted to leave everything else like that, and I
- 24:15Speaker 3: was like, this is perfect, Like I'll get the group.
- 24:20Speaker 3: The group is always bigger than the whole, right, and
- 24:24Speaker 3: even if you're Michael Jackson, Like when the Jacksons went
- 24:27Speaker 3: on tour after the Thriller album. That's that tour was
- 24:31Speaker 3: still bigger than a Michael Jackson thought, right, right, right,
- 24:33Speaker 3: So I was like, I'll take the group. Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So it was already kind of planned, like, look, we're
- 24:40Speaker 1: going to drop the group and then everyone's gonna kind
- 24:43Speaker 1: of yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 3: And I was lucky enough where I still got the best,
- 24:47Speaker 3: the Purple tape. I got the Purple tape. Yeah, for sure.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yo. We got to stop the interview. Shout out to

- 27:26Speaker 1: I didn't even mention the best part I got to

- 27:34Speaker 1: you get for free doesn't work. Find out for yourself
- 27:37Speaker 1: and thank me later. Let's get back to the interview.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I always wondered this as a record executive for the
- 27:45Speaker 1: What was the thoughts running through your head the first
- 27:48Speaker 1: time you heard the torture skit on thirty six Chambers
- 27:52Speaker 1: hard on my life because that shit is wild and
- 27:57Speaker 1: I know it by heart.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah, And it was like one of those things.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Were if I was in the car, I was with
- 28:01Speaker 1: my parents, I just couldn't play that ship loud because
- 28:04Speaker 1: I can't hear have them here here, you know, tell
- 28:06Speaker 1: motherfuckers by their dick off the third story building or whatever.
- 28:10Speaker 3: So you laughed, Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 1: What I can only imagine what that studio session was like,
- 28:15Speaker 1: where these guys are just trying to one at each
- 28:17Speaker 1: other on some crazy You.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Could even hear them laughing. And yeah, I wasn't in
- 28:23Speaker 3: the studio, no, but that's that's so you laughed.
- 28:26Speaker 1: I just you know, you always hear like you know
- 28:27Speaker 1: back then, I'm sure like especially during that time period,
- 28:30Speaker 1: I feel like a lot more labels were like a
- 28:32Speaker 1: little a little more.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Like cautious, a lot more cautious. Even radio is a
- 28:36Speaker 3: lot cautious. Like they were like we had to explain
- 28:39Speaker 3: some what the metha man recon meant because.
- 28:41Speaker 1: They thought it was probably meth.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Well not only they thought it was Meth. They sont,
- 28:45Speaker 3: I'm gonna stick it. They thought he was talking about it,
- 28:47Speaker 3: he was going to stick somebody up, and just like right.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Crazy was for you. You know, you end up with
- 28:56Speaker 1: the Purple tape. I think early on a lot of
- 28:59Speaker 1: people will probably coming out of thirty six Chambers. You know,
- 29:06Speaker 1: Cream is the biggest record on that album, probably right,
- 29:09Speaker 1: if you had to pick one in terms of like
- 29:11Speaker 1: commercial success, et cetera. But Method Man to me comes
- 29:15Speaker 1: out of that album feeling like the star.
- 29:19Speaker 3: He's the snoop of the East Coast.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Right was what did you ever try to work out
- 29:27Speaker 1: onto cow?
- 29:28Speaker 3: I didn't have the money, RCAA said no. So then
- 29:32Speaker 3: when we started talking about like who like Giz was
- 29:35Speaker 3: going to Geffen yep, Meth went to Deaf Jam and
- 29:38Speaker 3: Dirty was that electu. So I told HERZ I want right.
- 29:42Speaker 3: So we start negotiating and RCAA with twenty thousand dollars apart,
- 29:48Speaker 3: and I go to the business fast person. I'm like,
- 29:51Speaker 3: give them the twenty thousand dollars and she says, I'm
- 29:54Speaker 3: tired of your shit. You're supposed to be on my side,
- 29:57Speaker 3: and I take a chair. We're in the thirty sixth
- 29:59Speaker 3: floor conference room and I'm literally facing this way, and
- 30:04Speaker 3: but this way is all glass, right, and if we
- 30:07Speaker 3: went through the window, it would have killed somebody. And
- 30:10Speaker 3: I grabbed the chair like while, like I was a lefty,
- 30:13Speaker 3: I grabbed it with this and then I turned around
- 30:16Speaker 3: and I threw it through the glass door. And I
- 30:19Speaker 3: was just like.
- 30:20Speaker 1: We're talking about twenty grand to get this deal done, yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And not twenty grands to pay for the album. We
- 30:26Speaker 3: were twenty grand apart, twenty grand apart to get the Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 3: But the relationship that me and Rizza had, like we're
- 30:31Speaker 3: supposed to be negotiating against each other, but I was
- 30:34Speaker 3: like from day one, we were always with each other,
- 30:38Speaker 3: like we figure this out. We were always a lot aligned.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And then the cops came there, arrested me at the
- 30:48Speaker 3: RCAA office, at the r s A offices. I got
- 30:52Speaker 3: out immediately, like you know, they gave me a fine
- 30:54Speaker 3: note ball on the right, and then Rizz a call. Hees,
- 30:57Speaker 3: we're going to be with you, but let's torture them
- 31:00Speaker 3: a little bit, let them rate. So the Meth album,
- 31:04Speaker 3: I just found out my girlfriend was pregnant with my
- 31:06Speaker 3: first child, so I was like, I do need to
- 31:09Speaker 3: get this done, no matter what. And then Meth scanned
- 31:13Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty thousand first week, which was crazy,
- 31:17Speaker 3: and then here's the twenty thousand, and I was like, no,
- 31:23Speaker 3: I sent the crazy There were no emails at that time,
- 31:25Speaker 3: but I sent the crazy. No, like, well yeah, whatever,
- 31:30Speaker 3: was like, this is you know, we can have this
- 31:33Speaker 3: fuck you not the Meta Man record, but right, I go, now,
- 31:36Speaker 3: it's going to cost us, so, you know, and it
- 31:39Speaker 3: cost us a lot more than three or four times more,
- 31:42Speaker 3: right than the twenty just what we were actually offering
- 31:46Speaker 3: it at the beginning, and then beginning of the year
- 31:49Speaker 3: presidered let's go, can we get this? And I'm like,
- 31:53Speaker 3: I'll figure out a way how to get it.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Did you have any like when you because I mean again,
- 31:59Speaker 1: nothing sounds like the Purple tape. The Purple Tape is
- 32:02Speaker 1: nothing like thirty six Chambers. Obviously there's the Purple Tape.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Should have really been the second album, the thirty six Chambers.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Right, it felt like, you know, just it's it's almost
- 32:13Speaker 1: like when we think of the Marvel movies. Killer Mike
- 32:16Speaker 1: said this about Run the Jewels and his last album
- 32:19Speaker 1: is this Logan project. But it really felt like like
- 32:22Speaker 1: a its own like branch of like the Wu.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Tang MCU if you will.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But when you when you like first sit with the album,
- 32:31Speaker 1: do you understand like, because this is a pretty complex project,
- 32:34Speaker 1: it's very very like it's just it's different than thirty
- 32:36Speaker 1: six Chambers, but it is, did you understand like, yo,
- 32:39Speaker 1: this is this might rival what we've already done with
- 32:43Speaker 1: the first album.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Yeah. So so my thing was that f GM did
- 32:48Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty on meth. Meth is like a
- 32:51Speaker 3: sun to me. We have the same birthday everything, and.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And the fucking Superstar if you ever watched that movie
- 32:56Speaker 1: the show.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so that well, that's my best friend who
- 33:00Speaker 3: did the movie.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Great fucking movie.
- 33:01Speaker 3: So when I said he was somebody who lived on
- 33:03Speaker 3: the first floor, that was him. Okay, when we moved
- 33:06Speaker 3: four six or five, Cooin had it on VHS, right,
- 33:09Speaker 3: so we all. I said, we got to beat one
- 33:13Speaker 3: hundred twenty, We got to beat a hundred, not against
- 33:15Speaker 3: Smith but against Steph jam And we did one hundred
- 33:17Speaker 3: and thirty.
- 33:17Speaker 1: So you guys got it. That's crazy.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Then I wrote another fuck you letter to r c A.
- 33:24Speaker 1: When the shark the biton nwards uh skid is on there.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Do you try to like talk them out off the
- 33:33Speaker 1: ledge with that sort of thing or is it like,
- 33:36Speaker 1: did you guys feel that way?
- 33:37Speaker 3: Like no, I mean at the end of the only
- 33:39Speaker 3: thing that we had, they wanted to name the album
- 33:42Speaker 3: Wu Gambinos mm hm, And we get a phone call
- 33:46Speaker 3: from the gambat if you get to use that name,
- 33:50Speaker 3: we want half.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean obviously they ended up like loosely using
- 33:55Speaker 1: Wu Gambinos a few.
- 33:56Speaker 3: As as a song, right, but they were cool with
- 33:58Speaker 3: that if you're to name it so destroyer. They reached
- 34:03Speaker 3: out to my dad.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Okay, your dad would be the guy to get that call.
- 34:08Speaker 3: And my dad lived in Long Island, and he says,
- 34:11Speaker 3: I need to see you tonight. I'm saying, like, what
- 34:16Speaker 3: the fuck did I right, like, are you coming? He goes, no,
- 34:20Speaker 3: you come to see me now. I'm just like, what's
- 34:22Speaker 3: going on? What's going on? I said, Am I bringing Nicole? Alex?
- 34:27Speaker 3: Alex is now one old right? He goes no. So
- 34:33Speaker 3: I'm like, right, So I call somebody. I'm like, do
- 34:41Speaker 3: you know anything? Hell, Like, what's going on? He guys,
- 34:46Speaker 3: nobody told me to come to the house too. So
- 34:49Speaker 3: I'm just like there's more than what are you going
- 34:51Speaker 3: to the house? So take a ride to Long Island?
- 35:00Speaker 3: What's up? So and so called you're not honest? Named
- 35:04Speaker 3: Ray Kwan? Name the album game? Yeah? I think we
- 35:08Speaker 3: got named it, Like what's the problem because they want
- 35:11Speaker 3: half I'm like cool, said so and so, And I
- 35:14Speaker 3: was like, you gotta be kidding me, Like I got
- 35:19Speaker 3: pissed at my dad. I was like this you pulling
- 35:21Speaker 3: some ship like so you could eat off this?
- 35:26Speaker 1: Which is this fair question?
- 35:27Speaker 3: Right? And I'm like that's fucking crazy. So all right,
- 35:37Speaker 3: I'm just gonna name it something else.
- 35:40Speaker 1: That's wild.
- 35:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 35:41Speaker 1: It's interesting because it's like back then, like you would
- 35:45Speaker 1: think when everything was like super active with Mafia that
- 35:51Speaker 1: that probably happened more than that.
- 35:54Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, it was like there was
- 35:56Speaker 3: no issue. They didn't like jam oh you got to
- 35:57Speaker 3: keep the name like not.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Like like I know recently, like Burner named the album Gotti.
- 36:02Speaker 1: But he only did it because he cleared he called
- 36:04Speaker 1: the family got the green line, didn't want to do
- 36:08Speaker 1: it without there.
- 36:08Speaker 3: But like I wonder what IRV did true r P.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Yeah that's true because he I mean, I feel like
- 36:17Speaker 1: he didn't necessarily become like a super public face up
- 36:21Speaker 1: until I feel like the Gotti stuff was already kind
- 36:24Speaker 1: of put the rest.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Yeah, So I mean I don't know, like we like
- 36:28Speaker 3: once we called it something else, like we didn't have.
- 36:31Speaker 1: It didn't matter. Yeah, do you know how that like, like,
- 36:35Speaker 1: was there other name contenders besides only built for Cuban
- 36:38Speaker 1: links when you guys had to change it.
- 36:39Speaker 3: No, I was more nervous that I had it t Ray,
- 36:42Speaker 3: and Ray was like the same expression as mees, you
- 36:44Speaker 3: got to be kidding me. I'm like, nah, I'm like,
- 36:47Speaker 3: did he already have the backup name? He came with
- 36:49Speaker 3: the name the next day, So I mean, I'm sure.
- 36:52Speaker 1: It's crazy. Yeah, it's it's wild because I feel like,
- 36:56Speaker 1: you know, there's so many There's like thirty six Chambers
- 37:00Speaker 1: is like the put it on the on the Mantle,
- 37:03Speaker 1: It's like the the Precipice of Wu Tang And to me,
- 37:06Speaker 1: you know, it's one of the greatest albums of all time,
- 37:08Speaker 1: but man.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Only built for Cuban leaks and liquid swords.
- 37:13Speaker 1: They have a lot to say about which which are
- 37:15Speaker 1: those three albums the best? Because they are all incredible.
- 37:19Speaker 1: How hard was it to get Wu Tang forever done.
- 37:25Speaker 1: It was such a long wait.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I remember we had to do all the other records first,
- 37:29Speaker 3: so but then I didn't realize that Leo was like saying,
- 37:33Speaker 3: all right, Beth, we'll give you X y Z, we'll
- 37:36Speaker 3: double it this that or whatever. But you know what,
- 37:38Speaker 3: I take my head off to Rizza and Divine Brother,
- 37:42Speaker 3: you know, for keeping their work.
- 37:46Speaker 1: And like, was it always the because because back then
- 37:48Speaker 1: when you would sell a double album, it would count
- 37:49Speaker 1: as two. Yeah, was that always the plan?
- 37:52Speaker 3: No, they asked for a lot of money, which I
- 37:54Speaker 3: got them, and then.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Like, well, if we're gonna do this, I need to
- 37:59Speaker 1: to discord the And it was such a different album too.
- 38:03Speaker 3: You know what, if they made it into just one album,
- 38:07Speaker 3: it would have been ridiculous. But this is where and
- 38:09Speaker 3: we talk about it all the time, and I'll take
- 38:12Speaker 3: some of the blame. We had this rage against the
- 38:16Speaker 3: machine talk. I mean, I got that there, and they
- 38:22Speaker 3: weren't getting paid a lot of money. And I'll tell
- 38:28Speaker 3: you a crazy story about this date a few seconds. Okay,
- 38:36Speaker 3: they weren't getting paid a lot of money. Rages the headliner,
- 38:40Speaker 3: rages the headliner, and they weren't getting paid but you
- 38:44Speaker 3: see that where it says Illinois. If we did the Midwest,
- 38:49Speaker 3: we would have sold twenty million albums. This it was
- 38:53Speaker 3: all like Nebraska, like the whitest of white. And even
- 38:58Speaker 3: when you went to the show this past Friday was
- 39:00Speaker 3: eighty five percent. Who would have been the biggest hip
- 39:03Speaker 3: hop album of all time? Guarantee?
- 39:06Speaker 1: And they quit because they talk.
- 39:10Speaker 3: So this day. Two things happened on this day. My
- 39:18Speaker 3: grandfather passed, not that year, but on August twenty nine.
- 39:24Speaker 3: And then I just get home from my honeymoon, right
- 39:28Speaker 3: and I get a phone call and they beat shit
- 39:33Speaker 3: out of one of my employees at the show, Wu
- 39:37Speaker 3: Tang okay, and he was he was wrong. What Wu
- 39:43Speaker 3: Tang wasn't actually wrong?
- 39:45Speaker 1: So your employee fucked up.
- 39:47Speaker 3: He went on the air on the radio and says,
- 39:49Speaker 3: come to my after party. I'm the original after party,
- 39:52Speaker 3: not Ray Kwan, somebody who's not in the group.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, that's a problem.
- 39:59Speaker 3: So that was the first call I got on that
- 40:02Speaker 3: day on that show.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I remember seeing like as a kid, you know, MTV
- 40:11Speaker 1: News and Kurt Loder talking about this tour and and
- 40:14Speaker 1: you know, Wu Tank forever it felt like such a
- 40:18Speaker 1: like a just huge event.
- 40:20Speaker 3: It was like.
- 40:22Speaker 1: You know it was it was such a big deal,
- 40:24Speaker 1: and then you know, Triumph ends up being the I mean,
- 40:26Speaker 1: it's a song they closed the tour out with.
- 40:28Speaker 3: And how expensive was that video? That was the first
- 40:31Speaker 3: million dollars hip hop video of all time?
- 40:33Speaker 1: It felt like it because at that time, that was
- 40:35Speaker 1: before the Victory video. That felt like the craziest video
- 40:39Speaker 1: I'd ever seen in my life when I was a kid,
- 40:40Speaker 1: I'm like, this is fucking it is seven minute song.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Brett Rattner, who just kind of a rush out and
- 40:46Speaker 3: money Talks, directed the video million dollars. Well do you
- 40:51Speaker 3: do you were?
- 40:51Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if you remember the specifics
- 40:53Speaker 1: or care to share, but what the total budget was
- 40:55Speaker 1: for marketing alone for that album.
- 41:00Speaker 3: To be close to him? I mean a million, not
- 41:02Speaker 3: the video is the video is only a million. Video
- 41:04Speaker 3: is a millillion. It's probably probably another million.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Jaz that's crazy. Two million dors two million dollars.
- 41:11Speaker 3: We scanned eight hundred thousand week one week one debut
- 41:18Speaker 3: number one around the world, like in ninety five percent
- 41:21Speaker 3: of the world, So eight hundred thousand times ten dollars
- 41:25Speaker 3: times twenty dollars because was a double album.
- 41:28Speaker 1: So yeah, it's.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Interesting twenty so twenty it was like sixteen million dollars
- 41:33Speaker 3: that we didn't.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean those double albums used to hit you. You'd
- 41:36Speaker 1: hit that Sam Goodie like oh damn yes, or you'd
- 41:42Speaker 1: wait for that shit to get used, do you know.
- 41:44Speaker 3: I mean at the.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Warehouse, you'd be all right, it's used. I could get it.
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's crazy. Triumph was that. I can just imagine, like
- 41:52Speaker 1: you guys probably did. You guys put too like much
- 41:55Speaker 1: of an effort into pushing that record to radio. It's
- 41:57Speaker 1: a it's there's like you said, no hook seven minutes long.
- 41:59Speaker 3: No, we didn't do. The other thing we did was
- 42:03Speaker 3: college radio. Brow were you still a gabinet ninety seven?
- 42:08Speaker 3: You in New York were Virgin Mercury? Well we cand
- 42:14Speaker 3: about was college radio? Mike sure?
- 42:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean who replaced your Kelly right right? She
- 42:20Speaker 1: did probably did a much better job, he said it. Yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 1: just Triumph is one of them. I would I would say,
- 42:29Speaker 1: you know, there's this fifty U fifty New York list
- 42:32Speaker 1: that has gone viral again two years old. But it's like,
- 42:37Speaker 1: how does inspected deck? Who's got arguably two of the
- 42:40Speaker 1: greatest verses of all time, Triumph and Cream. I also
- 42:45Speaker 1: think the above the Clouds verse on the Gangster album
- 42:48Speaker 1: is up. It's up in the rafters. How do you
- 42:50Speaker 1: not have fun? And then this is our face? Shit,
- 42:52Speaker 1: He's like, God, do you not have expected deck on it?
- 42:55Speaker 1: It's crazy, It's it's wild. I'm gonna talk a little
- 42:59Speaker 1: bit about you know, Loud as a whole has been
- 43:03Speaker 1: there's just so we talked a little bit about the licks.
- 43:07Speaker 1: You know, you guys. You also end up sign an
- 43:09Speaker 1: exhibit I Have forty Days, forty Nights out there, which
- 43:13Speaker 1: is his second album, At.
- 43:17Speaker 3: The Speed of Life.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Obviously the first project was incredible. Was did you have
- 43:22Speaker 1: a real because you put effort into trying to break
- 43:26Speaker 1: West Coast artists? Was that something that because you lived
- 43:29Speaker 1: here that you had like a like you felt like
- 43:33Speaker 1: you needed to do or was it.
- 43:34Speaker 3: I mean no, I mean, I mean, I think Exhibit is.
- 43:39Speaker 3: I mean he is, he's a superstar and he's one
- 43:42Speaker 3: of the greats. I mean, what are we talking about?
- 43:43Speaker 3: I mean lyrically, he was incredible money.
- 43:47Speaker 1: He's got three personal classics. To me, like, I think
- 43:49Speaker 1: his first three albums.
- 43:51Speaker 3: So what do you I'll tell you my three what
- 43:53Speaker 3: are you three?
- 43:54Speaker 1: I think it's at the speed of life, forty days,
- 43:55Speaker 1: forty nights, and oh you talk about you talked about
- 43:57Speaker 1: sing no no albums. I think, I mean, I know
- 44:01Speaker 1: everyone loves restless, but I think you go he's got
- 44:05Speaker 1: chamber music. Three Card, Oh my god, three Card Molly
- 44:09Speaker 1: was rest in Peace to spear Man. But that song
- 44:14Speaker 1: I told Exhibit I just ran into him at his
- 44:17Speaker 1: his his release show. He did a show at the Peppermint
- 44:19Speaker 1: Club and I was like, he's doing this show called
- 44:22Speaker 1: Rhyme Fest and it's like him dilated people's I said, buddy, please,
- 44:27Speaker 1: that is the boom back backpack wraps. Please do three
- 44:30Speaker 1: Card mom bring out ras please.
- 44:33Speaker 3: But yeah, no, I mean what you see is what
- 44:36Speaker 3: you get.
- 44:36Speaker 1: That video was game changing, right, it was.
- 44:39Speaker 3: It was well all his videos, even even his first
- 44:41Speaker 3: single of all time, Paparazzi, well off the first album.
- 44:44Speaker 3: It was a game, I mean with an orchestra and
- 44:46Speaker 3: a cello player on the beach Ian.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy. Was there like like when Exhibit starts
- 44:52Speaker 1: to get you know, I think he's he gets put
- 44:55Speaker 1: on the top Dog album right, the Snoop album The Bitch,
- 45:01Speaker 1: which I felt like introduced him to such a a
- 45:03Speaker 1: new audience. Right, Snoop Dog at that time is the
- 45:05Speaker 1: biggest and one of the biggest rappers on the planet.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Well, that record turned Snoop's career around too.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Because the first Snoop No Limit album was a dud
- 45:13Speaker 1: and it didn't really have anything redeeming about it in
- 45:15Speaker 1: my opinion, But that album had some ship on it.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Bitch Please was like his first like real I think
- 45:21Speaker 1: hit after death Row. But then he then exhibit gets
- 45:25Speaker 1: kind of put into the crew, right, he goes out
- 45:28Speaker 1: on tour with the Up and Smoke Tour and he's
- 45:31Speaker 1: on two thousand and one and and all that. Like,
- 45:35Speaker 1: it feels like the creation of Restless was like an
- 45:38Speaker 1: important moment for you.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Guys and just for his career. What was it?
- 45:42Speaker 1: What was it like? Just kind of being behind the
- 45:44Speaker 1: scenes and watching that.
- 45:47Speaker 3: He was like he was intense and he was like
- 45:53Speaker 3: I want off. I'm like, I'm not letting you off, because.
- 45:56Speaker 1: At that time, I'm sure he had pressure to sign
- 45:58Speaker 1: with Interscope.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm like, let's just do it, you know.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I don't know if he said if I said it,
- 46:05Speaker 3: but we both agreed, let's just do a JV between
- 46:08Speaker 3: after Math and Loud. Right then the scope can't distribute it,
- 46:13Speaker 3: but they could see fifty percent of the profit mm,
- 46:16Speaker 3: which is a fair Yeah, and dre still got paid whatever.
- 46:19Speaker 3: I don't remember what Drake got paid, but at the end,
- 46:22Speaker 3: and that's what it was. It was a Loud after
- 46:26Speaker 3: MAK was that.
- 46:28Speaker 1: The only type of it was that the first time
- 46:29Speaker 1: you did a deal.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Like that, the only time I've ever did a deal
- 46:32Speaker 3: like that, rack out.
- 46:33Speaker 1: You know, it makes sense to let dray in on it. Yeah,
- 46:37Speaker 1: and I remember seeing him come out with the with
- 46:40Speaker 1: that that that tour was insane. Yeah, it's crazy too
- 46:44Speaker 1: because you also had uh thug mentality, which was crazy.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Bone solo album was that because Bone Thugs is coming
- 46:56Speaker 1: up the same time Loud's coming up. It's kind of like,
- 46:58Speaker 1: you know, similar trajectories at that time, like they're doing
- 47:02Speaker 1: the Grammys there. I mean at a certain point in
- 47:04Speaker 1: time in Bone Thugs is they were the ship, the
- 47:06Speaker 1: biggest group.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Yeah world and they you know, they were on Relativity,
- 47:10Speaker 3: which was a Sony owned company, so they had the
- 47:12Speaker 3: Sony machine. So when I sold loud to Sony, it
- 47:16Speaker 3: was easier. I took over relativity and relativity relativity turned
- 47:20Speaker 3: into loud. Ah. So so anything that was not relativesitivity
- 47:25Speaker 3: we kept at loud.
- 47:26Speaker 1: What A was what?
- 47:27Speaker 3: Because there's a lot of stuff on relative. So if
- 47:30Speaker 3: I remember again, if I remember correctly, I think Ruthless
- 47:35Speaker 3: was a P and D deal through relativity. Okay, so
- 47:40Speaker 3: we had if there were still the Bone Thugs, but
- 47:42Speaker 3: all the solo members, you know, we had Three six
- 47:48Speaker 3: was putting out mixtapes, yes, And I went master P
- 47:54Speaker 3: was blowing up and I said, I understand what he's doing.
- 47:58Speaker 3: I just want to understand how he's doing it, Like
- 48:01Speaker 3: how is he putting out these records so quick? And
- 48:03Speaker 3: I did this tour. I went on a tour bus
- 48:05Speaker 3: by myself, like with when I'm taking about myself, no artists,
- 48:09Speaker 3: just a few other street team guys and I and
- 48:15Speaker 3: we only did the South and everybody had said the
- 48:18Speaker 3: next one to come out of the South. There is
- 48:19Speaker 3: this group called three six Mafia. Now I'm already and
- 48:23Speaker 3: I'm like, what label. They said, It's weird that it's relativity,
- 48:26Speaker 3: but only through mixtapes, and they have a special deal
- 48:28Speaker 3: with Selector Hits, which was a one stop yeah yeah
- 48:33Speaker 3: in Memphis. So me and Tommy started talking quietly about
- 48:42Speaker 3: me leaving BMG to go to RCA. I really wanted
- 48:46Speaker 3: to be at Enniscope, Okay, But at the end of
- 48:52Speaker 3: the day, when Thomy says, are we going to do this?
- 48:56Speaker 3: I did it. It was a three six Mafia.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Wow.
- 49:00Speaker 3: I didn't do it for no other reason. And Timer said,
- 49:02Speaker 3: do you want to be a Columbia epic? I said, no,
- 49:03Speaker 3: I want this label that you have club Relativity, And
- 49:06Speaker 3: he's looking at you, guys, that's actually a brilliant idea.
- 49:09Speaker 3: You'll be the third major inside the Sony system.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Wow, that's crazy. Three six man yeah, other mixed. I
- 49:19Speaker 1: always as a fan, I was always confused because they'd
- 49:21Speaker 1: be like the mixtape Ship.
- 49:22Speaker 3: And they'd be like Triple six month, Fiat three six miles,
- 49:26Speaker 3: the cub up Thugs. Yeah, so that's fucking crazy.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Man. Hey, you gotta stop the interview. You want to
- 49:33Speaker 1: give a shout out.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Man. The only thing we smoke ladies and gentlemen is
- 49:36Speaker 3: slap Woods.
- 49:37Speaker 1: That's right. Make sure you follow them at slap Woods.
- 49:40Speaker 1: And you know the reason why we smoked flap Woods.
- 49:43Speaker 1: It's literally because they slap you can't smoke a slapoos.
- 49:47Speaker 1: What the fuck are you doing?
- 49:48Speaker 3: Hey, don't forget to go to bootleg cav dot com.
- 49:50Speaker 1: You know, we had to celebrate the two year anniversary
- 49:52Speaker 1: of the most viral interview of all time.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Throw the shirt up so you could see it. I
- 49:56Speaker 3: turned it down.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Shout out to that boy, Big Boogie, a big college
- 49:59Speaker 1: in Jacksonville. And we just threw these on sale half
- 50:02Speaker 1: off for the five hundred episode t Bootleg cab dot com.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Go get you a shirt. Let's get back to the interview.
- 50:08Speaker 1: What when you sold? Because how much did you sell?
- 50:11Speaker 3: All allowed? I sold seventy.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Percent and that's seventy percent of the master seventy percent
- 50:17Speaker 1: of everything at the time.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I kept thirty percent, so I owned still
- 50:21Speaker 3: thirty percent. So two thousand going into two thousand and one.
- 50:28Speaker 3: At the end of two thousand, we had a one
- 50:31Speaker 3: hundred and eighty six million dollars fourth quarter. We had
- 50:37Speaker 3: a three to six month Favorite record. We had a
- 50:39Speaker 3: Project Pet record, we had the MP record, we had
- 50:41Speaker 3: the Restless record, we had a Wu Tang record, we
- 50:43Speaker 3: had a Prodigy solo record. Was it the w.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Two doesn't win. The W might have been n iron flag,
- 50:51Speaker 1: no iron flag. The W was first. I think that
- 50:53Speaker 1: was the W. Maybe maybe I'm not Damn Jack Pat
- 51:00Speaker 1: had fucking Chicken, Don't don't Save. Yeah, I mean that's crazy.
- 51:07Speaker 3: M P had Annie that preys like.
- 51:10Speaker 1: You know, it's it's it's at what point in time
- 51:14Speaker 1: is is Warriors the first album you work with m
- 51:17Speaker 1: op on?
- 51:18Speaker 3: Is that the record? Yeah?
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, fucking classic album.
- 51:23Speaker 3: I can't hear.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I love the remix obviously, Remy mas I just the
- 51:27Speaker 1: original was funk Flex.
- 51:29Speaker 3: That's not even that's not even the original. But I'm
- 51:32Speaker 3: saying like, look, if you bought the album, here flex.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Get ready to go down big Flex SI for Annie
- 51:38Speaker 1: up in the fucking background. Man, so good. Those guys
- 51:42Speaker 1: were like, you know, when I was a kid, I
- 51:45Speaker 1: bought a double XL around the time that album dropped,
- 51:47Speaker 1: and I remember they were talking about how they used
- 51:50Speaker 1: to like shoot people off the top of their project buildings,
- 51:53Speaker 1: and I remember the first time in my life I.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Was like, oh, these guys are like, no, I believe
- 51:58Speaker 3: these guys. And they had a woman but the name
- 52:00Speaker 3: of Fox, who is their bodyguard? Yes? She she she
- 52:04Speaker 3: just passed, but she was to this day one of
- 52:08Speaker 3: my favorite people of all time.
- 52:10Speaker 1: I saw Fox beat the ship out of a sound
- 52:13Speaker 1: man at scott there's a venue of Scottsdale in Arizona.
- 52:18Speaker 1: MP had a show. The sound man kept fucking with
- 52:22Speaker 1: their sound. She fucked this dude up in the middle
- 52:25Speaker 1: of their set. They killed the music and and Mop
- 52:29Speaker 1: jumps into the crowd and does any a cappella at
- 52:32Speaker 1: the top of their fucking lungs in the crowd, and
- 52:36Speaker 1: then I don't know what happens after that, but it
- 52:37Speaker 1: was fucking to see this giant lady beat the ship
- 52:41Speaker 1: out of this little white sound dude who kept it
- 52:44Speaker 1: was amazing. And she's also you know, she's on four
- 52:46Speaker 1: alarm blaze, you know, talking that ship with jay Z.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Shout out to rest in peace to Fox. I didn't
- 52:50Speaker 1: know you passed away. YEA, that's crazy. MP. Were they
- 52:53Speaker 1: like cool to deal with because you're dealing with some
- 52:55Speaker 1: like serious Brownsville gentleman like at that point.
- 52:59Speaker 2: I mean, there was definitely, like I've always repeated, all
- 53:03Speaker 2: the artists with respect, like I think most of them
- 53:07Speaker 2: knew what my background was, right, but I wasn't trying to.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Flex or anything like that, Like I never had a
- 53:18Speaker 3: I'm sure they've got they've gotten upset with me, not them,
- 53:21Speaker 3: you know all you know, but I mean, it happens.
- 53:24Speaker 3: But I won't fight over money. I'll fight over principal.
- 53:29Speaker 3: And if you're not working hard, it's like I can't
- 53:31Speaker 3: want this more than you.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Or if you go on the radio and promote after party,
- 53:36Speaker 1: well he was like that that was what was was
- 53:41Speaker 1: like MLP though for you? Was that like because you
- 53:45Speaker 1: would work with so many artists and I feel like
- 53:47Speaker 1: I don't feel like they don't get enough flowers.
- 53:49Speaker 3: That's a classic. That's definitely a classic. I mean, but
- 53:53Speaker 3: at the end of the day, it's like every one
- 53:56Speaker 3: of them, like yeah, who I mean, who held their own?
- 54:00Speaker 3: Everywhere mob held their own? Joe and punt Hell, It's
- 54:04Speaker 3: like I just was attracted to, you know, when me
- 54:09Speaker 3: and Joe spoke for the first time, we spoke on
- 54:12Speaker 3: a Thursday, and I remember this like it was an
- 54:14Speaker 3: hour ago. I was in Chicago with Quincy Jones and
- 54:18Speaker 3: Oprah winfree Crazy and I get this call. He goes,
- 54:22Speaker 3: FATCHO wants to talk to you? He was, I got
- 54:24Speaker 3: this artist boom boom, boom boom. I said, I'm in
- 54:27Speaker 3: Chicago and I'll be back in New York on Tuesdays.
- 54:31Speaker 3: Let's meet. So from Thursday to Tuesday, I must have
- 54:35Speaker 3: gotten eight calls don't do business with Joe. He's this,
- 54:38Speaker 3: he's that, everything. And Joe comes in on Tuesday and
- 54:46Speaker 3: I tell him this is what I said. I said,
- 54:50Speaker 3: but there's something about even though we're meeting now first
- 54:53Speaker 3: time face to face, I'm going to tell you two stories. Joe.
- 54:59Speaker 3: I was with Chris he let him rest in peace,
- 55:01Speaker 3: and Chrit he was signed to Chris and we were
- 55:03Speaker 3: on our way to play basketball, but he had to
- 55:05Speaker 3: stop off give something to Joe, and Joe cracked a
- 55:10Speaker 3: joke like and he just made me laugh. I'm in
- 55:13Speaker 3: the car, we haven't even met. I'm just laughing. I said,
- 55:17Speaker 3: whatever the joke was, just you know, you had me
- 55:20Speaker 3: on the floor in the car and had he handled
- 55:23Speaker 3: yourself on the phone. The fuck what everybody says.
- 55:27Speaker 1: MM, because I mean, you always hear some crazy stories
- 55:30Speaker 1: about back then, fat Joe, yeah, sos and all kind
- 55:35Speaker 1: of crazy shit.
- 55:35Speaker 3: So then he said, let's meet Thursday. I'm going back
- 55:42Speaker 3: to LA. This was my wife and kids. Yeah, lived
- 55:45Speaker 3: in LA and my head of A and R guy
- 55:48Speaker 3: my name of Maddie c who discovered Biggie actually Wow,
- 55:52Speaker 3: was in the office and he never showed up to
- 55:54Speaker 3: be in the office. I'm like, what are you doing here,
- 55:57Speaker 3: especially at ten thirty in the morning. He goes, don't
- 55:59Speaker 3: you haven't pun? And I'm like, you're here for this meeting.
- 56:03Speaker 3: He says yeah. So the second they walked in, I said,
- 56:07Speaker 3: who's your lawyer? They said Tim Al Tim represented whom
- 56:11Speaker 3: I called Tim, and his office was maybe five blocks
- 56:13Speaker 3: I said, Tim, get it here as soon as possible.
- 56:15Speaker 3: We're doing a deal. They said, you haven't heard any music.
- 56:17Speaker 3: I said, Maddi's here. You guys can make the music.
- 56:20Speaker 3: If Maddie s here, that means he's a superstar. They
- 56:23Speaker 3: looked at me like I was fucking crazy. We shook hands.
- 56:28Speaker 3: Tim came and said, this is what I could afford.
- 56:29Speaker 3: Boom your job to make the records now.
- 56:33Speaker 1: So you signed Pun without hearing anything. Yeah, just based
- 56:38Speaker 1: off of your guy, Maddie's he's here.
- 56:40Speaker 3: I know that this is he and I had a
- 56:43Speaker 3: trust in Joe, Like to this day, me and Joe
- 56:45Speaker 3: are still brothers. And everything that he's going through right
- 56:48Speaker 3: now with all the bullshit. I like technology it, yeah.
- 56:51Speaker 1: I mean, but it's like it's it's it's I went
- 56:55Speaker 1: on that dude's Instagram page and I realized, Yo, that
- 56:56Speaker 1: guy's been trying to troll Joe for fucking the last
- 57:00Speaker 1: two years straight because he's probably a fucking nobody, loser
- 57:02Speaker 1: who's just trying to stir up ship.
- 57:05Speaker 3: And it's just like, it's fucking crazy, man, And it's
- 57:08Speaker 3: just like it's wild. Joe's one of the best dads
- 57:11Speaker 3: I know, and it's just like everything that he's gone
- 57:13Speaker 3: through in the past two months, losing a dad, losing
- 57:15Speaker 3: his mom, you know, within a two months radius. I mean,
- 57:19Speaker 3: it's just like.
- 57:20Speaker 1: I love the podcast man. I shot him and I
- 57:22Speaker 1: was like, Yo, you got you. And I don't know
- 57:24Speaker 1: way out into this sooner.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Like dis Lawyer should be this bar that. That's how
- 57:28Speaker 3: I honestly feel.
- 57:29Speaker 1: I do feel like there should be some sort of
- 57:32Speaker 1: there should be a gratifications when you're like Tony Busby
- 57:35Speaker 1: or you're one of these guys who are like ambulance
- 57:37Speaker 1: chasers and you're just gonna take something because you hope
- 57:39Speaker 1: to get a settlement, check out of it, because.
- 57:40Speaker 3: That's really all it is.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Right, you'll take it like a lot of these lawyers
- 57:44Speaker 1: will take a case knowing it's bullshit, but they're all
- 57:46Speaker 1: hopefully they settle. Fuck that. That's crazy, man, that's crazy.
- 57:51Speaker 1: So what do you remember the first song you heard
- 57:53Speaker 1: from pun then if you didn't sign him?
- 57:55Speaker 3: Here in the music the first song I ever heard
- 57:58Speaker 3: Mojo Nick Sea? Who was I became co head of
- 58:04Speaker 3: promotion with my brother. He goes, if you heard this,
- 58:07Speaker 3: you ain't a killer record? And I'm like nah. He goes,
- 58:11Speaker 3: he goes, where are I said, I'm in. I was
- 58:13Speaker 3: in a meeting somewhere. He goes, you got to hear
- 58:15Speaker 3: this fucking record you go with dropping it as a
- 58:17Speaker 3: white label. I'm like when he was like, now, that's crazy, man,
- 58:24Speaker 3: that is wild.
- 58:25Speaker 1: What about you? So you know Mob Deep, who's one
- 58:29Speaker 1: of my favorite groups ever. They had a juvenile hell
- 58:33Speaker 1: album before they were with Loud right yep, And so
- 58:37Speaker 1: their kids during that album like actual like kids. What
- 58:42Speaker 1: was that the album that put them on the map
- 58:44Speaker 1: for you to be like, yo, what.
- 58:46Speaker 3: What is now? I mean? I know? I mean Hid
- 58:47Speaker 3: from the Back was a was a cool record. I
- 58:51Speaker 3: just got too many calls and WU now was blowing
- 58:54Speaker 3: up and I need to follow up with something right, right,
- 58:58Speaker 3: So the pressure is on, right. I used to don't
- 59:00Speaker 3: want to be like a one hit one though, right.
- 59:03Speaker 3: So Prodigy was sick and have comes and he comes
- 59:11Speaker 3: with the Mob crew and I just knew some again.
- 59:19Speaker 3: I heard one song I think it was called Patty Shop.
- 59:23Speaker 3: I was like, wow, this is this is really cool.
- 59:27Speaker 3: And I got a phone call from a woman who
- 59:29Speaker 3: worked with distribution who was like, like managing him. Then
- 59:33Speaker 3: I had an assistant by the name of Scott Free
- 59:34Speaker 3: who had just started. He goes, these guys are incredible.
- 59:37Speaker 3: Then there was a big DJ in New York called
- 59:39Speaker 3: Stretcher Armstrong stretched Man Right, so Maddie wasn't working for
- 59:45Speaker 3: us yet, and then I meet Maddie. He goes, these
- 59:51Speaker 3: guys are incredible and like we did the deal. That album,
- 59:54Speaker 3: to me, Wu Tang was thirty six Chambers. That album
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: was the start of the tree and then you get
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: the infamity, but then we get with the infamous, and
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: to me, that's the most important album. I'm not thinking
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: the best album for your label. It gave us real
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: credibility and it gave.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Us Yeah, because look we put we put two on
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: the board at that point.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Yeah, within two years, do you like?
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: I can only imagine because that album is such a
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: and we.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Had a Flex album that did everybody was like, what
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: the fuck you're doing?
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Yeah the first Yeah, I still have that. I actually
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: think I have that on vinyl shot the Flex Crazy.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: I forgot that was, But did you guys have the
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: Tunnel album?
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: The Infamous is an album that is like, you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: there's such a vulnerability about parts of the album. There's
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: so there. It's just it's just such a dynamic.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: But it's making a second life like chook Ones. The
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: beat was voted the best hip hop beat of all time, right,
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: and then an I for an Eye for Me is
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: one of my favorite records of all time.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Yes, I think dude, give up the goods?
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: Yeah, one understand. But I remember, like I said, I
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: was a basketball junkie, right, so I'd be in the city.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: But on Sundays there was this one game in Long
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Island where I grew up with and even though I'm
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: in my thirties now, yeah, everybody would still go to
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: this park. So I'd wake up at seven thirty in
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: the morning, get in a car, go to the park
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: and play the album and I would for forty five minutes.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: I would keep it on repeat an I for an eye.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, I mean it's one of the and
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: it was like fighting music for me, like I would
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: get to that fucking park of like ready, yeah, no,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: for sure. It's crazy. Like do you guys, do you
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: recall when you heard Shook.
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: Ones for the first time? The original or yeah, I
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: mean or part two, part two? Yeah, I'll tell you
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: exactly where I heard it. I just found out my
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: girlfriend was pregnant. Okay, found out around one o'clock. Comes
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: to the office with a bunch of cookies. Okay, she
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: tells me she's pregnant. Big deal.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Two thirty Maddie and free Walking is we got to
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: play something. What the fuck is it? Man? And I'm
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: like wow. And then two days later we had to
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: go down to Florida for how can I be That?
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Which was another conference?
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: It was it was a conference and I guess Maddie
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: already played the record for Stretch and Barbido.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: They probably loved it.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: And there was a basketball game at you know, one
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: of the parks, pick up.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: And I'm good.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: You gotta fucking smash on and it's not to bubble
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: like just you know in New York boat go way
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: for Christmas break and when we come back, the thing
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: is through the roof.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Like it's crazy too, because I mean, like you said,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: the Second Life, I think there was a generation that
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: found that song through the eight Mile movie, which is rang.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: Yeah, but no, but now there's another there's like a
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: it's just like my youngest son now even though he's
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: twenty four, it's like it just keeps getting new legs.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy, Like is it platinum at this point?
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: It's gotta be, oh yeah, definitely platum.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: It's funny because you'll see certain songs that you would
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: assume were platinum already. Sometimes you'll see an ri like,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: oh wait, that's barely like that's gold, Like damn, it
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: feels like that should be fucking diamond.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: I think this album has more streams than thirty six Chambers.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: That might make sense because the streaming era. How do
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: we you could look it up, if we could go
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: to if we go to Spotify and see what my
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: deep monthly listeners on what who Things Monthly listen as a.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Group just go mob Deep, go whute. That's interesting. Five
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: point four million from mob Deep, So it's close. It's close.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: That's fucking Do me a favorite.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: What's that kind of.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna say fourteen.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: That's the that.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: He doesn't put out a record in fucking I mean,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: he's had a couple of new singles, but but they
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: but they haven't.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: They're not big streaming hits. They've been doing it a radio.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: But that ship's fucked.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: You know, I have nineteen billion streams with him, and
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: I haven't.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Seen I want to get I haven't seen it get
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: to the sea.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: I haven't seen it. I haven't seen a penny from
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: it because there was no streaming when I sold. We
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: got it. You're gonna get to the src.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Shit, Hey, we gotta wrap up this interview another one
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: presented by hard Dan. Baby, you already know what it is.

- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Mob Deep gets into it with Tupac. Now I think.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: I told you the story, though didn't but we didn't
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: do it on camera.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Okay, this is a podcast, all right, so obviously drop
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a gem on him comes out.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: But this even before I drop a gem come from Well, yeah,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I want to know, Like, wait, can it break down?
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Because you're you have a perspective, You're living in LA
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: You're cool with Tupac. There's the East coast, West coast
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: shit happening.
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: Mob Deep gets involved. So remember Tony Rich, Yes, I
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: told you the story, so I'm just claiming again. So
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: Tony Rich is performing at the House of Blues on
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: wherever the Pendry Hotel is now last and I got
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: rendered and I get a smack. We got bald heads
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: even though, like, well love right, So I don't know
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: and I see and it's Pac and I don't know
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: if it's a love slap or if it's a real smack.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Be which the ship still burns, no matter, right, So
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: I look at him. He looks at me. He goes,
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: you don't say hello to an end, and I'm like, man,
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: I don't know where I stand with you. He was
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: You're my brother for life. What are you talking about?
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: You know what I'm talking about. You talk about the
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: two little Guys. I'm like, man, I love them. That's
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: my favorite record in the world, not Drop a Gem.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: This is just shook Ones and you know whatever, I go,
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: I'm just trying to be relevant. He goes. I'm like,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: he was the biggest pop star in the world at
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: the time, so there was beef, but there was really
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: no beef. It wasn't anything serious. It was more some.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: And he did the same thing with Exhibit both West
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Coast and he loved Paparazzi. I didn't know him, and
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Exhibit had a thing. Yeah, he he answered. He goes,
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I forget which record, he goes, and for the new guy.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Exhibit like, when are you think it's about Paparazzi. It's
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: the thing, you know whatever, No, he goes, it's about
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: the money.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: That's interesting. Yeah, it's it's it's crazy because you think
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: about like, yeah, drop a jam on The Most Crazy Man.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: That's one of my favorite like that album too. When
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: he when he got shot, I found out Sunday morning. Well,
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: pe and Have I had a promotion my head of
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: We had a dinner at my house in New York,
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: and I said I would like us to the record's exploding,
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: and then Prodigy said, don't go any further for the record.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: They wanted to pull it. We did, like pull it
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: from like just being on MTV, BTV.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: We didn't we didn't shoot a video yet, but we
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: pulled it from radio.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: So because that was that ninety seven I think at
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: the time I was playing the record seventy times a week.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: The record was maybe.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Because that record was made in regards to his shooting
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: in New York.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Yeah, so when he got shot.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: In Vegas, they were like, yeo, we got to pull
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the record. I mean, it's a good call by them.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: That's that's crazy.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: No, there was respect. I mean, like you can't punk Prodigy.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Well, I have and Park had is such a great
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: relationship with meth Man, Like meth Man's on fucking all
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: eyes on me, like, yeah, it's wild, dude. Do you
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: where do you put uh? Because I think Keep It
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Thorough is also one of the greatest feats of all time.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: So now didn't we speak about it again the other night?
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Probably the Kendrick record. Yeah, I mean to me, it's
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: the same beat. I think it has the same sample
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: in it for sure.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's such a fucking oh my goodness, rest in
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: peace of Prodigy man. Just one of the all time greats.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: And you know, Kendrick has said that if it wasn't
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: a Prodigy, he really wouldn't be rapping.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: That makes sense because you hear it back in the day.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Would you guys get mad because there are albums that
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: didn't get I used to look at the source like
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: a bible, and the fact that some of these albums
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: that came, I mean, I don't think did you guys
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: ever have a five mic album?
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: I was pissed on you. Thirty six Shams, Cuban Leaks, Infamous,
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: and we go on and on. But like I was
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: just Dave Mays was one of my I still love
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Dave that he was one of my best friends. And
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I was like, I'm like, Dave, what the fuck you
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: got four and a half? Four and a half, Oh
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: my god, they got a lot of shit wrong over there. Yeah,
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: I mean it's safe to say so. Yeah.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: So I want to kind of get to you have
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: another era of your career because SRC is its own monster.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: David Banner a con. We go on and on and on.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: There's so much it's like a I would say, you
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: kind of came onto the scene with SRC with a
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: different approach with it.
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: But no, it wasn't. It was supposed to be a
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: loud point two point h it's so loud, right, so loud,
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: and I had to work so Sony wanted me to
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: become chairman okay of Columbia. It just didn't work out.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: But I've left. I couldn't work for them, right. So
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: the original SRC was Stephen Rifkin Company, which was the
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: marketing company, right. We were the independent promotion company.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: That that that that Hadvando lips now and I mean
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: what I mean what we worked pretty much from those years.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Let's say, from the time you started at Cavan and
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: when did you go to Mercury. Everybody, this is Brian Sampton,
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: the media, so ninety would you say we worked probably
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: eighty percent of ball hip hop records.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: That's crazy. So the original SRC was that Stephen Rifting Company.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: So when I couldn't bring the Loud name, I said,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: you know what, I'm gonna call it SRC, but it's
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: not gonna be Stephen Rifking Company. It's gonna be Street
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: Records Corporation. So I signed this art s out of Orlando,
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: Florida by Naven Granddaddy's South, and he had a record
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: called fuck the Law I'm on and I signed him
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: to Loud. Okay, and we're in Orlando when we're in
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: this fucking backwards club, like and the DJ plays this
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: fucking record and I never saw it like five hundred
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: the club only maybe help a hundred people. Everybody knew
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: the fucking word to the t. And I'm like, all right,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: I'm signing this guy, but how the funk am I
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: going to convince the new company university behind the law.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: So bannacoms and like a pan. But the great thing
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: is little Flip was less Our. I signed to Loud.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: Interesting, that was the last Loud Records artist that I signed,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: So the underground legends Loud, right, Yeah.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: So I was like, this is meant to be whips
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: on the record. I fly Banner and Wendy Day out
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: to l a. I wouldn't let him leave.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and he had such an independent thing going himself,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: like David Banner was such an incredible producer too, right.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: And then when I hear a com it's like the
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: beginning of the year, literally the beginning year. And it's
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: the first meeting at Universal. I said, I just found
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: the biggest orders in my career. And everybody left in
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: my face like, oh, bigger than Wu Tang. And I
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: have a temper those days. I had a temper. Yeah,
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: it's like, fuck you motherfuckers. You won't see me for
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: a year. And I don't know if you know Gobby.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: I know that.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, with French and everything. Ye, he's lost a
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: lot of weight, God bless him. Yes, so God's wife
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: was pregnant. I said, God, you do the East coast,
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: I'll do the West coast. Take a Kon. I'll take
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: his brother who looks just like him. And there was
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: no video, so you were running around with boot. I
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: had Boot.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: So you guys were doubling up on the promo. This
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: before YouTube, before social media, before any So you're you
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: have Akon's brother on the West coast all these stations.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: No, but it's me and Boo and and Gotta be
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: an Akon Like that's fucking insane, and the record broke.
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: I don't know, I don't even remember the station in
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: fucking two markets, Utah, which is the white of White
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: in Albuquerque, New Mexico, locked Up, locked Up, styles P
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: and we started bringing it, you know, and they were
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: such a research company they didn't understand what the fuck
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: we were doing. So now comes I want to say,
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: it's Father's Day, who you're talking about? I'm still talking
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: about the say Conrada locked Up. So we still haven't
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: got in New York, but we're getting marked by market
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: and the record is going up each week. And it
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: was the lowest selling album I've ever had in my
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: life first week. First week sales were low first week,
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: and we're going up thirty forty percent every week.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: So it's like truly like you're seeing the correlation between
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: radio and then the sales.
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: And the sales. So Sunday, Father's Day, get out a show.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: I get a phone call, what the fuck did you do?
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: In Brooklyn? Like what are you talking about? Because I
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: just left King plasm Mall. Every car is playing this
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: fucking record. I'm like, I didn't do anything. The only
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: thing I did was I kept New York out of it.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: I just covered Connecticut, I covered the Boston, I covered
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Philly and it just would leak in.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Tetrick. It was a dope album too.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: Hebro calls Monday on my way to New York, says
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: the number one phone so and research was the new
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: word for me, right, And I'm like, well, what's the research?
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: He goes quite back and a half hour I said him,
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: I have a flight. I don't know if like I
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: don't know if I could pick up a right. And
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: I called him literally right before he goes your top
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: three call out m hm. And I was like, he's
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: just in brand new in New York. He just came
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: to New York maybe like a month or two right
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: before that. And then they also have lean back. So
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: I the second I land, I'm calling Manty Litman, who's
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: the president of Republic. Before I could even call him,
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: his brother calls me. He goes, how are you doing this?
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: I'm like, I go, this is why you brought me in.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: There was no secret sauce like right, and like I
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: sent an email like saying, hey, this is what's going
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: on with these records? They said no fucking way, and
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: I'm like, and when they realized that it was top three,
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: call out lean Back.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Was the number one song. I mean it was insane, dude,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: the lean Back moment.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: That whole fucking summer man between Locked Up, Exploding and
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: lean Back, I don't know if.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I will love it. I mean, yeah, I mean those
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: are I mean, I don't. I don't think people understand
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: like the gravity of how big lean Back was during
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: that summer. I mean it was.
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: It was so fucking big. We couldn't even come with
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: another record.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I remember because there were some other joints on that album.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a record. The second single, there was.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Some shit like that was a that was a solid
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: project and it was funny because like.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: Oh and again I didn't hear any music on that either.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: Joe said, hey, I want to do a Terros Squad
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: album and the first album, what's the first album online?
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: The first album was on Atlantic, which was a dud.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Yeah it was a dud. Yes, and pun was on
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: that right. Yes, that's fucking crazy. So it's like you
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: have locked like a. Kon was such an unconventional voice
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: and an unconventional artist, obviously with his background and shit, like,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's that. I mean, obviously you hear
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: it and you're like, this is different, but at the
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: time it's like it's kind of hip hop but it's not.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: And then after that it's just to pop. It's over right.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Yeah, but we became a pop label. Yes, from that,
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: I signed this girl Chantelle g had two massive top
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: ten pop record wow ell Fiona had two.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's crazy. So Akon ends up also becoming
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: his own executive.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: You know, you think about t Pain Lady Guy, it's
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: it's it's it's kind of crazy, like damn the Lane
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: back and locked up in the same summer. I remember
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: when Green Lantern had a ghetto remix for the Acon
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Ghetto record. I think he put Tupac.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: That fucking killed me that I thought I was gonna
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: win a fucking Grammy on that record. That record, to
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: me is still one of my favorite, one of my
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: favorite songs ever. Right, and they put this fucking remix together.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: Whatever I'm like was on it, Tupac and Biggie, and
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: I was like, what the fuck, Like you were not
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: a fan of it? No, because it's like like and
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: the and the record was dead right now, where are
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: a million albums? Now? Okay, album's platinum albums platinum? Where at?
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: I mean, I thought this record was gonna take us
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: to three right, and we still had the Money record,
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: which was lonely yep. And now that this record was dead,
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: I think there goes the perfect I think Universe is
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: going to pull the plug, like we went to a million,
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: let's not spend any more money. So I think it
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: was Shaggy am I saying yes, probably right, here's a record.
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: Thought it was me but breaks out Hawaii. No, these
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: are facts. I fly to Hawaii, did the station cook
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: was a k I w I? Yeah, k I k
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: I And they put the record on have five phones lonely?
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, lonely. That sample is right.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: So I land back in l A and Avery Manci's
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: brother says, what the fuck were you just in a while.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: It's like no, why, He goes, well, it's really I was,
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: you know, And it was like the record's exploding. They said,
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: somebody from SRC came out there, and I was like,
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: I have Avery, I have no idea what the fuck
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: you're talking about. So I'm living in Miami now with
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: my wife and kids. There's the station in Miami called
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: Power ninety six. Yeah yeah, well yeah, so at that
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: time it was Tony the Tiger, who I guess was
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: the program director.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: Yeah still there, station's still there.
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: Yeah yeah. So I land from LA to Miami and
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: I go straight to see Tony the Tiger said, if
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: you like this record and play this record right now,
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: I'll take it to this restaurant called Maderanos, which was
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: like this spot, but this Italian spot. It was really
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: puts the record on top five phones again. Monday comes
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: request retail like now hitting three four million, like the
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: ship like, so I'm living. I'm splitting my time between
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: New York, Floria and La.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Crazy and.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: Montecle was when he come to New York tonight. He
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: goes me and Avery needs to talk to you, and
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: I'm like, what's the matter. He goes, we need to
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: know your secret, sauce. And I'm like, it's called hitting
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: the streets once you started.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Crazy, you're at that point in time in your
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: career and you're not above I'm gonna fly to fucking
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Hawaii and hand this record to a radio station, so.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: You know, and I came clean. I said, yeah, I
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: went to Hawaii. I was like, you guys weren't going
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: to spend any more money, and I promised Akon that
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: we would come with this record.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: It's so crazy, man. It's interesting too because you fast
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: forward to today. I wonder we were talking a little
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: bit about the streams earlier. Do you ever have fomo
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: that you might have.
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: Sold to early with with s r C with the
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: I don't want to get into it, but I should
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: never I should never have sold s r C. I
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: would probably still be there, mm hmm, and the company
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: would be worth notth of a billion dollars right what?
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: At what what point in time? Let's say they wanted
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: to fire somebody in my staff and I said, if
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: you fire him, that means you want to cut my
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: legs off. So just buy me out now. And I
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: don't know if anybody else would have done that, but
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: I should have said, you know what, so and so
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: they want to get rid of you. You still have this,
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: and but I still got to support a family. But
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: I'm so loyal to my to my people.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: And you you made it work with your people. So
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: it's like here, you're not going to take away my this,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: my sauce, my people, your people, your stand is a
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: part of your sauce.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: Like you said, Hey real.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: Quick, want to tell you about our sponsors at odds Socks.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: That's our day one family. Make sure you follow them

- 1:23:13Speaker 1: comfortable socks in the entire world, plus the underwear, all
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: of it. Get twenty percent off. Go to odd socksofficial
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: dot com. Use that promo code bootleg right now or
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: bootleg keV. I forget which one it is. I think
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: it's both. I think both work. Anyway, let's get back
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: to the interview. Can you break down the economics back
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: then of an album sale?
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: Album sell, you would get ten dollars.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: Do you get ten bucks if you're the label? Yeah,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: so the retailer probably gets whatever's on top of the
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: ten dollars.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: They would charge how much?
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: So yeah, whatever it is, right, but whatever it is,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: so the label would take ten bucks and then that
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: would get broken down.
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: Ye artists manufacturing stuff.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Like that, right right right right?
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Damn today it's so that was the crazy thing about
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: the record. It So before the CD came, you would
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: sell that album for four dollars. CD coms yourself to
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: ten dollars. You're still spending the same amount of money
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: on marketing, you're still spending the same amount of money
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: on radio, but.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: It goes up your profitabilities.
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: All of a sudden, there's six extra fucking dollars, which
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: changes everything. So on a million, right on a million records,
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: I'm just saying, it's a do easy math right on
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: a platinum record. Before there was a CD. Four million
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: dollars off of.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: A vinyl or a tape, Yeah, okay, because those cost
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it more to make.
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: Us on the On the CD, you do a million,
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: that's ten million dollars. All of a sudd there's an
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: extra six million dollars. So that that's when everybody do
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: the deals change with that? Also, now the deals start
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: changing and all and all the motherfuckers care about if
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: you take uh Teddy Riley's not the Back the Blackstreet, right,
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: So no diggity right.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Great album by the way, that whole album, but.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: That one single really turned it into I think whatever
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: it did a million two million records so everybody only
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: gave a fuck about was that one hit. Wonder, Let's
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: get some Teddy Riley records, Let's get some rizz of
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: records for ll Come, Let's get some FOREL records. And
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: the executives, the A and R executives, got fucking lazy
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: because they started getting so fucking rich because of the bonuses,
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: because all of a sudden, you do a million records,
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: if you do two million, twenty million dollars, So they
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: were chasing.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I mean that kind of explains a lot because back
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: then you would always see if there was a hot producer.
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: And the next you know, the radio radio was like
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: also the producer became the star.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like everybody had to get a Kanye beat.
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: Or a Swiss speed you know, yes or whatever. It
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: was so and nobody and they didn't work anymore to
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: develop a writer or to develop a producer. Like everybody
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: that I ever signed, and it wasn't intentionally, but they
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: were all self contained. Rizak right, self contained, East Swift,
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: self contained, Joe and Punn self contained.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: But you also also did real artist development, like you
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: weren't signing.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know how many artists you signed
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: at the top of their Like, I never signed an
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: artist at the top of their career ever in my life.
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: It's like Akon was, Like I didn't know who Akon
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: was prior to No No, No.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: You might have knew Banner was, but Banner wasn't having great,
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: great success. But Banner was self contained. Everybody was self contained.
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: So I'm just like this, this is how I'm gonna go.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: I never considered myself an an R guy. Like He'll
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: tell you, I spoke to him every day. I was
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: a promotion guy. Tell me like, you know, I'm sorry,
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: I to keep on bringing you on.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: Brian, this is Brian's he's over there, he's this is
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: the best day of his month right now. So and
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: his kid graduated this month.
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: Congratulation.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: Was there ever any artists that you almost signed in
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the nineties that just.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: It for me? There was a few, There was them.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: There was Jay. BMG. Wouldn't let me sign Jay? Why
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: because we we were throwing so much weight up there,
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: and what they wanted was a little bit different.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: We've already done this, We've already seen this. This No Jay,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: j Jay, wont it was different? Okay, and Dame and
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: they were like not like and they didn't want a
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: lot of money. That's crazy.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: They just wanted their independence.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: Eminem too, huh yeah, because it's crazy because you think
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: about Eminem.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: He had like, I guess there's a tape that's somebody
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: said when he went to visit Pow, I don't know
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: who was interviewing him, and they said what label do
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: you want to be? And he said low.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: I don't doubt that at that time, of course, I
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: mean with what he was into.
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: And Paul interned for my partner Rich Isaacs.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Did you guys have any sort of loud records and
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: Raucous records?
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Did you ever we consulted Ruckus records. I never consider
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: Ruckus records competition.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: It wasn't even a competition, but I just because you
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: guys were much bigger. Raucus was very much like kind
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: of the backpack they were.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: They were owned by Marvel, not Margaret Rupert Murdoch's son
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: James Murdoch. They hired they would they hired us to
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: consult them.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: But that whole movement tale black Star most now, was
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: that ever anything where you were like, you know, maybe
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: we can kind of make this like, go a little
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: more mainstream this sound and should we start.
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: I never looked at them. I never. I never looked
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: at them that way. I never looked at it. I mean,
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: I knew James Murdoch was gonna run fox one.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: That's pretty crazy that Rupert Murdoch's kid owned Raucus, by
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: the way, for people who don't know that, that's a
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: that's a that's an insane.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: Little and what Ruckus said Raucus did. But I never
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: I never, you know, I never worried about I didn't
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: worry about def Jam. I didn't worry about Babe. I
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: didn't worry about that throw like. I just did what
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: I had. You know, if you're running a race and
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: if you look over your shoulder, see what you can
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: get this you get past so you could trip, like
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: just focus on the fish line man for all us
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: that that's what it was. I remember a Mob Deep
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: second album. We didn't have a smash like suck On
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: right Drop a gym was supposed to be but we
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: pulled it. But we were coming the same thing that
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: Foxy was coming mm hmm. And that was the only
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: time I had a huge argument with my cousin who
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: was my GM methodism, and I was like, I need
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: to know every fucking and I'm not even saying in
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: a bad way, of course, but yeah, and he was,
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: what are you so worried about?
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: I'm like, we got a beater.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: It wasn't even hard. I just I didn't like how
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: LEYO did that hmmm. And I knew he was good
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: like and we were so authentic and ethical and.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: You feel do you?
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: Did you and Leo have a bit of a rivalry
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: at that time. We came out of Noah and we
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: smacked him.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: I mean, listen, I don't even mean like, I just
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: mean like from an executive to executive.
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: No, because I looked at it like we we we
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: when we came, We came, and at the end of
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: the day, Wu tang Or met the man saved their ass.
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: I had an Warren g Right and I had Gotti.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Before they did interesting.
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: I was gonna sign Mike Geronima.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Shout out to Mike Geramia, Man, that's that's.
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: We couldn't get to sample Clinton and just didn't work out.
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: And he says a nerve call. He was, let me
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: just bring it to godlieb right, you know, so like
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: we were always with that jam one step ahead.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: So crazy. Yeah, you always hear things about you, obviously,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: I've never I've never I met Leord once and I
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: was like, I know your brother, Madi, what's up, bro?
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: The tallest Jewish guy in the world. That's fucking nuts.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: Can you share a couple of just like, give me
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: you have a random mop story you could share.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: They were in Vegas for magic.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Okay, they're clothing convention, right, And I was in.
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: Vegas and I had to show them what I was
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: built that of. So my family owned the umber An
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: Italian restaurant okay in Vegas, which which it's called Heiroes
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: Okay Okay. It's the longest free standing and I mean
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: there was not I mean there was never no beef,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: but like I was always aware of, like you know,
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: and like their manager I truly loved, but like I
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: had to show them that you come, I'm coming. But
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: there was We never had a beef. I know. They
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: went on me at record one time, led us off
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: the label. I was already gone from the label, you'd
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: already sold it. Yeah, But I'm closer to them today
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: than I was.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: It feels like they've aught that, each of them guys
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: are like, you know, obviously they're fucking older now. Yeah,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: you know, but yeah, that's shout to MP Man. You
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: also had a point in TI where you were working
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: with Mariah.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you that I thought everybody knew that.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Was that out there.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: I tried to keep it quiet. I always thought that
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: was I've known that.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: I thought I thought people knew that that.
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: You were like like helping her, you were managing her.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: So I was, yeah, I was like whatever, My thought
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: was like a management wrong?
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: What what era of.
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: If I went to Sony in ninety nine, I want
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: to say, night that's peak.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: Holy shit, that's like ninety's like uh uh fucking honey
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and and and I.
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: Think it was right after Honey she did director with
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: Whitney with that movie.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. You just I mean, dude, your your
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: your jacket is pretty stacked at this point. Do you
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: feel like do you like like cause you you seem
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: like a guy who hasn't lost that fire, the motivation
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: you're you're a guy who likes to work. What is
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: the current like, what are you what are you currently
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: working on? What drives you currently? And and and what
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: is kind of like current situation for Steve.
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: What I'm doing? You know I got sick in twenty thirteen. Yeah,
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: I had a heart attack. I really thought I was
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: going to die. I mean I did die. I died
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: three times, but I thought I was gonna have another one.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: And when you got kids, man, it's like, yeah, so
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: I stopped working, got the Boss and then.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: Two thousand and eighteen at the Kanye at a restaurant,
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: and how did you? I never worked anybody in my life.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: In my life, I mean you were you were present.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: I want to say you were present when he had
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: that Drink Champs interview. Weren't you? Were you there for
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: the crazy dream.
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: Change which when he said when he yeah, so that's
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: a funny story. I wasn't supposed to be there, but
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: you were there. I'm going to tell you. I'm going
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: to tell you. I'm going to tell you what. So
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: Norway's family, you know that, right. So my fiance nawn
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: So Glori had somebody who worked for him. Every time
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: I would come into town. You can get me a
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: car Miami in Miami. Yeah, so I'm dropping the car
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: off and we're on our way today. When she was
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: let me have to go to the bathroom. So we
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: go in and I'm like, why is he filming now?
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: Why is there so much security? And they said, jays here,
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: and I'm like, what the fuck? And this is when
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: he first started going after the Jews. And even though
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: I'm Jewish, I had every Jew in the world call
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: me people that I didn't know, they said, and like
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: the most powerful people like that I've never met. And
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: I'm getting bombarded, like you got. I'm like, I haven't
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: spoken to him in a year, and the last time
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: I spoke to me, he told me to go fuck
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: myself crazy, not over religiouship, just on. So she's walking
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: straight to the set like I don't know if she's lost,
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: like I don't know right or and then she said
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: she saw a guy with a bald head, so she
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: thought that was And I'm trying to grant and you
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: can't scream. I'm like, so I go and he sees me, Yeah,
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: he sees you. And what I think he said, my
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: favorite Jew. And I do believe I am his favorite Jew.
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: And I said, if you play What I said was
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: if you play nice, the world still loves you, I
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: mean for sure, And that was the thing. And then
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: he goes fly home with me. I said, I'm going
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: to down. He goes, I'll drop you off, and she
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: was like, he saw what I went through. I just
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: got the Lifetime Achievement Award with B E T. And
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: I went to Miami to see my moum. So went
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: to Miami for a few days just that whatever, and
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: then I was going to meet her family in Dallas.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: So I guess that that interview is probably four years
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: ago now half something like that. Yeah. Yeah, So so
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: twenty eighteen, Kanye, that is Daytona, that is the YA album,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: That's Kids.
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: He goes, that's the five albums, So that five album era,
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: that was hout we Will and you're with him at
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: that time Wyoming era. Yeah, and you and him, I'm
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: me and we just say. He goes, I'm gonna put
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: out these five albums, and he came with these states
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: like this. And I wasn't his manager, but I was running.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: I guess there's a whole bunch of people running good music.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: But you know, with Paul being at def Jam, Rich Isaacson,
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: who is my partner in loud as the number two
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: with theft Jam, it was like I pretty much and
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: I and Scooter. I gave his first deal to so
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: you know so, and at that time, Scooter's like the
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: manager on manager, the Scooter's the manager. And it was
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: just but it was he was relying on me to know,
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: you got to do what I do right, and it
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: worked the perfection.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean, look, I think kids, he
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: goes my favorite album out of the dad and ya
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: and then Daytona is a fucking classic.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: But it's crazy.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: So were you around when Drake comes to Wyoming? I was.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: He didn't look at me as an A and R guy.
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: He looked at me just run run the business. I
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: wasn't in Wyoming, So you.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Didn't do the Wyoming thing or nothing like that because
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: the Wyoming shit seemed crazy because he remember he flew
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: all the people out there.
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: Yeah, he flew everybody in the mom out there, Travis Drake.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: What resulted in you him telling you to go fuck yourself?
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: And was this in twenty eighteen? Like how long did
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: that last? Was it more than a year?
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: Less than a year? It was? I was only I said,
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: I'm only doing this for a year was if I could.
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: I was the only reason why I did it, to
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: see if I was strong enough mentally not to deal
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: with him, but with my heart, I thought I was dying.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: I was dying. So this is five years after you
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: have that scare at three thirteen, and so now he
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: wants to figure out not to how to get off
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: Universal somehow, and like, I really love the guy, I
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: really like. My heart breaks fro him sometimes and like,
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: and I always think how I could help him? Right,
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: So he was going through some shit and I remember
- 1:38:16Speaker 3: he was. I was talking to Biggs and Big says, yeah,
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: I think I think they said they were going to Jamaica.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: I don't know where where they were going. So when
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: you see him and you have him, call me because
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: I have an idea how I could get this.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: Thing done from get him off Universal, not get.
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: Him off but the partner really partner up with him
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: and let him do what he does best. And falls me.
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: We speak. He goes, call me tomorrow. Now it's a
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: Jewish holitay. It's the funniest thing. And he goes, I'm
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: going to land and meet with this lawyer and joelcats
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: like Joel's my attorney. He goes, if I send you
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: a plane, will you come? Will you come to Alanta?
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: I said I supposed to have dinner with I didn't
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: say the Jewish Holliday, but I said, suppost have dinner
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: with my mom tonight. Let me just see if I
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: could just move it. When don't we back? We're back whatever.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: And the plan was for Universal to give him a fund,
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: not to make an album, creation fund to create and
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: do whatever the fuck he wants to do. And I
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: had Universal say yes.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: To an amount.
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: I don't want to say the amount, but it was
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: brasy amount, okay. And I told Joel because Joel was
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: also my attorney, because this is the most brilliant thing
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: I've ever heard. And We're flying back home and I'm
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: looking at his p and L I was like, why
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: is he still on payroll? I should never have said it,
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: but I was trying to get I was trying to
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: spark him on something.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: And that's when when you say why he's on payroll?
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: Why?
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Like why is Kanye pain?
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: No, not Kanye some I don't want to say someone
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: a random name, like hey, why is this person getting it? Yeah?
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: And I did it to get a reaction, and the
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: reaction was min drone fucking business, go fuck your and
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: I shouldn't And the truth is I was looking to
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: start something just and see the reaction, so that he
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: probably forgot.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: It does feel like yay, during that time, had a
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: lot of random people eating off of them.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: Still it does.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: No, I'm sure he does now, but even then, you
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: would see the people who'd be around.
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: Him, and and that's what and that's really what. That
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: that broke my heart, like be like nobody gave a
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: fuck about him.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Like yeah, it feels like, you know, I feel like
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: he is a guy who's who's hurt, you know, and
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: I feel like he's turned his hurt into you know,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: whatever point he's trying to make, he's communicating in a very.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: Hurtful way, So he's trying to hurt everybody in it.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it's like there's a difference between like,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: you know, having a conversation about his grand point that
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: he might be trying to make without it being hateful,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: without it ostracizing so many people have supported you without
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: being like it you know, it's it's just it's sad man.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: And then like that, now the music just feels so sloppy.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: It's like, wait, how where do I gotta go? Feels
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: all undone, It feels like he's just dropping demos now
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: and would you if he called you today, would you
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: pick up the call.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: I would pick up the call. And but I don't
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: know what the call. I don't know how I would
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: act on. He made my mom cry. Yeah, so that's
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: it is interesting. My mom is what, she's ninety one
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: years old. She wanted the toughest. She was married to
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: my dad, so she had to be tough.
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: I wonder for you man, like being Jewish right now?
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: I see there's a lot of things that are going
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: on with the government of Israel that are you know,
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: a lot of people don't agree with, a lot of
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: people don't like it's conflated into like the extreme on
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: both sides, right where if you do criticize Israel, you know,
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: a lot of things people do to shut you ups,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: called you anti Semitic. But on the other side, it
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: has also resulted in a ton of true anti Semitism.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: And then you got the Kanye thing going on. It
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: just feels like, you know, it for you somebody who's
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: done so much in the music industry, and like you said,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: your mom, it hurts your mom the stuff Kanye said,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: like where do you feel like the world is right
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: now because we're in a fucked up place.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: World War threes. I mean, I'm not even worried about
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: World War three, to be honest with you. Yeah, I'm
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: more worried about the civil war here.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very possible.
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: Right. My kids are black, right, right, so you got
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: black white My sons have black. Yeah.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: So it's like it just feels especially with like disconnect
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: from the geopolitical shit and just connect to what's going
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: on here. It feels like with the ice ship, it's
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: the beginning of something really dark, because if it's if
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: it's it starts with the ice raids, does it then
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: go to like people who don't agree with you? Does it?
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: You know, are they gonna start like they're gonna cut
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: off funding the states based on who they voted for?
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: And yeah, so like the mother of my children, she's
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: from training that one and raised or granted she has
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: a citizenship now, right, but she really well what does
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: that mean? Yeah? So like granted she has a US passport, right,
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: does that mean like I don't trust anything? So I'm
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: just like I don't like, I don't know, man, I'm
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: just like I'm not you know, I'm more worried about.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it makes sense, man, it doesn't make sense.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: Are you currently I know we were talking a little bit.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: I know, you know, I don't want to get into
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: what you were talking about, but I know you're at
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: least listening to a new artist, checking out new artists.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: You sign an artist or like what is what is
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: I mean?
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: I signed? I helped. I found an artist that was
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: already was signed to a label, an independent, and I
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: brought the independent over to Sony and I think this
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: kid is gonna be as like my next Acon.
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: That's big.
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: I'll played a record as soon as Yeah. And you know,
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: Sony said, you know you wanted like a first look deal,
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: and I really don't know what I want right I
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: have a hot time talking these new artists.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: It's a different time, huh.
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: I mean you saw when we at the hotel.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: Oh ye Jesus Christ. I don't even want to get
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: into the details of that. That was a fucking ship show.
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: But what so I was. I just came back from
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: Atlanta and I'm going back tomorrow. One of the girls
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: could really spit developing fan base, a fan base, and
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: you know, and she's selling some lip gloss.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: I mean, hell, that's great.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the other girl is really sing you
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: just needs records, right, So is somebody really going to
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: take the time and the patient.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's artist development again. Yeah, it's most
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: most people want to get on board when the records
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: already happened.
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: And the reason why and the reason why I left
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: so early was there was just too many people talking.
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: There was a lot. Yeah, yeah, it was a lot.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: And I was like, at then, I like, you know,
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: I understood. I heard both stories. I was like, all right,
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: I get this. This is yeah cool. And so you
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: know Magic is a partner of mine, right and you know,
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: big bro that was great. So it's just like, yeah,
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: I mean they yeah.
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: I mean I feel like nowadays it's like you have
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: to figure out how to monetize so much outside of
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: the music because the music is like we said, it's
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: like a million streams is thirty eight hundred dollars. What
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: the fuck are we doing if?
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: But you got ten million streams it's thirty eight grand?
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: But fuck yeah. But at the end of the day,
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: I want to raise money and I want to stop
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: buying catalog in the right way. I don't like I
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: don't want to buy your kind of I want to buy.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: And let me just get in and out, get some pieces.
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: And and help and help you grow it. Partner her
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: up with an advertising where things could you know? So
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: those are the things I don't know if I have
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: the patience to really run a label.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: My youngest run through some loud nerd stuff. When you
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: guys did the rock album with the blue dude on
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: the cover, that.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: Was my favorite. I thought that woulda be the biggest
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: album in my career.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: This was like during the time when I mean it
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: was like the kid rock living but you had like
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: that press on there.
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: Present system is downright crazy time? Did it only went
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: on drunk with your yeah ye yea give like how
- 1:46:49Speaker 3: fun was that to put together? And I mean I
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: hired somebody to do it. But I really thought that
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: that was literally my idea And I really thought this
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: is before the jay Z Lincoln Park. Yeah, I thought
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: this was gonna be the biggest album, like I really did.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: Was it an expensive album to make? It was an
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: expensive problems. We couldn't get fucking clearance anyway.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: From the other artist labels. System of a down on
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: that album at that time. It is crazy. That's early
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: for them. That's fucking nuts. Jesus. What was the biggest
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: band on that? It was System of Down the big
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: it was. There was a pun record, du sounds about right.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Was it hard to get those guys, the rappers to
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: sign on to do it? No?
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: They did it in two seconds, that's for you.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: In Dangered Species has a pun album right came out
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: after he passes away? Was that Is there a lot
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: of unreleased pun left?
- 1:47:50Speaker 3: Or was that that? I don't know. I think that
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: was more of like a fell in just like I
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: don't know where the fuck that even? Mm hmm that album? Yeah?
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: This, yeah, baby, yeah, baby was obviously he was he was,
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: he was alive for that, making, the making of it, the.
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: Making of it.
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's crazy. Yeah, because in Dangerus Species comes
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: out and I'm like, oh shit, this is obviously a
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: lot of unrelease shit people hopping up.
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: But I don't I don't think we ever really did
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: anything with it. No, you didn't, But I just wondered,
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: was there more that you guys pulled from from then?
- 1:48:21Speaker 3: Or that?
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: Interesting? Interesting? What is your personal most slept on Loud
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: Records release of all time? Slept On Alcoholics damn ooh,
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: great album. Do you feel like the Links get enough
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: credit for because I just had Tash on because I
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: think rap life is to me, rap life is, Yeah.
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: That's it was an incredible album. But I feel like,
- 1:48:45Speaker 3: but I'm talking about the song damn right Coast to Coast.
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: I think it was Coast to Coast the album.
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: Yeah, they re I think they re recorded it. Did
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: they They just re recorded an alcoholics album. It was
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: either Coast to Coast or twenty one and over when.
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: It went over was the first album? Yeah?
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: They re recorded an album them like Taylor Swift style
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: if I talked to about y know you guys, but
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: you know, I think, yeah, the shouts of the licks uh,
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: rap life, Tash.
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: Though I got put it up there.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: And then for you, what was you know, in your
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: opinion man, an artist who you felt like was on loud,
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: but maybe you don't think it hit their full potential.
- 1:49:30Speaker 6: Press that bras albums if there was trust? What do
- 1:49:41Speaker 6: you mean by that?
- 1:49:41Speaker 3: They were so militant and they were anti the establishment that.
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: They almost didn't trust the establishment to like, let us
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: do what we're gonna do. You feel like hip hop
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: could have been bigger, should have been bigger. You want
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: to talk about one of the greatest beats of all time.
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: Any of it might be my two, my two favorite
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: records such so when I got that Last Time Achievement award,
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: we started off with about mm hmm.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: Fake fake records, right, oh man, that was such a
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: good album. Mind sex was crazy. I feel like even
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: the the second album though, was that RBG their second
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: album with that had uh hell yeah.
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: That whole song that.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: By the way, if you guys are all the scammers
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: out there, if you want to listen to how to
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: og Crack the System, go listen to hell Yeah by
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: Dead Press and One and stick Man Man.
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: If there was trust, they could have been the biggest album,
- 1:50:42Speaker 3: not the biggest album, they could have been the biggest
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: artist on that was it that they just didn't trust,
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: Like they didn't trust the system and they didn't trust me,
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: and you know, and I would say, if you didn't
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: trust me, then why did you sign it? You know,
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: I get along great with them now and everything else
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: But at the time you guys were at it was
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: like an artist at odds with the label situation. That's crazy.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: Were you with Loud when they dropped the second album.
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: I don't think so, yeah, because that's when jay Z
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: got on the remix. Yeah, that is a big what
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: if it's dead press man, because that first album ridiculous, incredible,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: and Drey was a big I always heard Dre was
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: a big fan of that. Scenes. That's crazy, man. Well listen,
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: you're a fucking legend. You gotta write a book. We're
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: gonna we're talking about it. You gotta get a book together,
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: or I'll tell you would be fire like a Loud
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: Records fucking TV series, but with like actors and shit,
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: like a mini series based loosely around your your life.
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: There are things we're talking about. Me and Rizz are
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: cooking up some things right now.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: Shout to Riza, man. I just told him. I saw
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: him the other night and I was like, I was
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: cleaning out my one of my boxes in my garage
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: and I found the Domestic Violence VHS tape, which is
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: his first movie he ever made. It was like a
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: fifteen minute short film and he's like, Yo, I can't
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: find that. Can you send that to me? I was like,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: of course, fuck, yeah, no, that'd be crazy exactly.
- 1:52:15Speaker 3: No, No, we're talking about. There's a lot of things
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: we're talking about. We're gonna be making some announcements a
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: few weeks.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: Were you a part of the Wu Tang video game
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: at all?
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: I was a part of the Wu Tang documentary. I
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: wasn't part of any of that stuff. But I'm bringing
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: ris of a part of me, just from a director
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: and a producer.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: Got to, got to got to. I love it, man,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: I appreciate thanks, thanks for coming. Thank you, yes, sir, well,
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: thank you for coming. My God, I appreciate it. Boom
