Latest / Twin Cities Territory / What hitters should the Twins target in free agency? Here's our list
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins have a new pitching coach. Brooks Lee is
- 0:03Speaker 1: a Gold Glove finalist. The Brewers are definitely in the
- 0:06Speaker 1: World Series. Guardians Rays continue their ALCS tonight. All that
- 0:10Speaker 1: coming up today on Twin Cities Territory, your Minnesota Twins podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Here on the Foul Territory Network, Zach Pearson, Dan Hayes
- 0:17Speaker 1: of The Athletic, joined by Tyler Duffy, longtime major leaguer.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We're going to start today, though, continuing our free agent week.
- 0:24Speaker 1: On Monday, we looked at some free agent pitchers that
- 0:26Speaker 1: we thought would fit the Twins. We focused a lot.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We focused entirely, I should say, on the bullpen. I
- 0:34Speaker 1: did want to pause and make a note. We glossed
- 0:37Speaker 1: over the starting rotation, not because it's perfect. I think
- 0:40Speaker 1: everybody could always use more starting pitching and be happy
- 0:42Speaker 1: with that, but I think the assessment in our eyes
- 0:47Speaker 1: is that the Twins are going to look at it
- 0:49Speaker 1: as we like what we have going into spring training.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Is that fair, Dan? It's not the place to spend money.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it is weird. They're in a strange spot with
- 0:58Speaker 2: those four guys having essentially one year left before free agency.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But behind them, you have a bunch of younger guys
- 1:05Speaker 2: with team control, Tosh Bradley, McCable, Connor Prelip. You look
- 1:10Speaker 2: at that group and Debbie Matthews, you look at that
- 1:12Speaker 2: group and could they be better? Yeah, absolutely. They could
- 1:16Speaker 2: be better. There's no question. But because you have Joe Ryan,
- 1:19Speaker 2: Pablo Lopez, Dean Kramer, and Bailey Ober all on four
- 1:23Speaker 2: one-year deals, essentially, you know, I would think they would
- 1:27Speaker 2: have to be creative and look at trading those guys
- 1:30Speaker 2: before they would address it via free agency. Is it possible?
- 1:34Speaker 2: Of course it is. There's no question because we saw
- 1:38Speaker 2: it happen in the 2022 lockout. When we came back,
- 1:43Speaker 2: Sonny Gray got traded with one year left on his
- 1:44Speaker 2: deal from the Reds to the Twins. It's a possibility
- 1:50Speaker 2: without question that they could move some of those guys
- 1:53Speaker 2: and then you would potentially address in free agency. But
- 1:56Speaker 2: Just looking at the big picture and how they're going
- 1:59Speaker 2: to do this, I don't know that they would put
- 2:03Speaker 2: themselves in that spot without having a bunch of trades
- 2:06Speaker 2: lined up. And that's going to have a big, fat,
- 2:10Speaker 2: blocked window when December 1 hits and we go to
- 2:14Speaker 2: a lockout. So then it's like– All of the offseason
- 2:17Speaker 2: essentially happens in March. That's how it happened last time.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It was chaotic. We saw a ton of trades. Tyler
- 2:23Speaker 2: got some new teammates real quick. He lost Josh Donaldson.
- 2:26Speaker 2: He gained Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela overnight. He lost
- 2:30Speaker 2: Mitch Garver.
- 2:32Speaker 3: It's wild times.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they gained Carlos Correa. All in like
- 2:38Speaker 2: a three. Yeah, current free agent Mitch Garver. Um, so,
- 2:44Speaker 2: so yeah, I, I think starting pitching definitely is on
- 2:47Speaker 2: the back burner the way they're looking at the plans
- 2:49Speaker 2: because they got to figure out other ways to address
- 2:51Speaker 2: this that are, don't have as much depth that are, are, um, and,
- 2:57Speaker 2: and are easier to, to address by going out and
- 3:01Speaker 2: spending money or making a trade.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And nothing ever goes to plan of course, but they're,
- 3:07Speaker 1: they're going to go into the season thinking they've got
- 3:09Speaker 1: three all-stars at the top of the rotation. Um, Whether
- 3:12Speaker 1: that turns out to be the case, obviously we shall see.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Pablo coming back from a second Tommy John, the book's
- 3:23Speaker 2: out the window. You trust that he is a workout
- 3:28Speaker 2: machine because that man is so on top of it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: He knows everything about himself and how to prepare, but
- 3:36Speaker 2: he's come back from a second Tommy John. So you
- 3:37Speaker 2: really don't know when's that scar tissue going to break.
- 3:40Speaker 2: How is it going to go pitching through that? I
- 3:43Speaker 2: don't know that you can count on him being maybe
- 3:47Speaker 2: 70 percentile.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Of what he really is. What is he going to
- 3:51Speaker 4: have as a runway? There's just so many what-ifs with
- 3:54Speaker 4: that stuff.
- 3:56Speaker 2: There very much is. You don't know, but you certainly
- 3:59Speaker 2: can feel pretty good about going in with Joe Ryan,
- 4:02Speaker 2: even though he had his second half issues yet again
- 4:05Speaker 2: this year. And Taj Bradley at the top, and then
- 4:08Speaker 2: you saw what Kramer did with the Twins. He had
- 4:11Speaker 2: a 380 ERA in his 9 or 10 starts, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: they think he's the guy that's more like a 380
- 4:16Speaker 2: to 4 ERA than the 6-something that they acquired from
- 4:20Speaker 2: the Orioles. Just look around, and I think there's reason
- 4:24Speaker 2: why they can look at that group and at least
- 4:26Speaker 2: feel pretty stable going in because there's young depth behind
- 4:30Speaker 2: it with Zebby, with Prelip, with Abel who has to
- 4:35Speaker 2: show he's healthy. But, man, he looked really promising yesterday.
- 4:39Speaker 2: going into the, before he got hurt, Mick Abel looked
- 4:42Speaker 2: really promising. It's a solid group, and I can understand
- 4:47Speaker 2: why it wouldn't be a direct focus.
- 4:50Speaker 1: All right. With that, we'll get on to the hitters
- 4:52Speaker 1: portion of the discussion. Just a reminder, as always, if
- 4:56Speaker 1: you like what you hear, please toss us a like,
- 4:58Speaker 1: a subscribe, however you watch or listen. If you're on YouTube,
- 5:01Speaker 1: there's a QR code on the screen to make that
- 5:03Speaker 1: super easy for you right there. When you look at
- 5:08Speaker 1: The twins in the field, or just the position players,
- 5:14Speaker 1: the outfield is crowded. We've got Byron Buxton. We've got
- 5:18Speaker 1: Walker Jenkins, Manuel Rodriguez. Trevor Larnik is still here. Matt
- 5:22Speaker 1: Walters in AAA.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Who am I forgetting?
- 5:24Speaker 1: Luke Kieschel, of course, in right field. Obviously, there are
- 5:32Speaker 1: players out there who are better than those players who
- 5:34Speaker 1: will be available, but I think the Twins' future is
- 5:36Speaker 1: obviously pretty well set in developing those youngsters there. Across
- 5:40Speaker 1: the infield, you have Brooks Lee, who is now a
- 5:42Speaker 1: Gold Glove finalist at third base. We'll talk about that
- 5:44Speaker 1: a little bit later. Kaelin Culpepper at shortstop. Second base
- 5:49Speaker 1: and first base are maybe a little bit in flex.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Cody Clemons, Royce Lewis sharing some time there along with
- 5:55Speaker 1: some others. The big spots where there seem to be needs.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Urgent needs.
- 6:02Speaker 1: To address our first base, where Royce Lewis just did
- 6:05Speaker 1: not produce enough to be the everyday first baseman going forward,
- 6:09Speaker 1: at least unless he can find another gear. DH, where
- 6:14Speaker 1: Josh Bell carries a $ 10 million mutual option, I believe
- 6:17Speaker 1: it is, for this year and doesn't seem likely to
- 6:19Speaker 1: be back. And Ketcher, where unless you're going to re-sign
- 6:22Speaker 1: Ryan Jeffers, there's going to be a hole there because
- 6:25Speaker 1: Von Lackey's not going to be ready on March 1st
- 6:29Speaker 1: or whenever the season starts. gets going. I guess March
- 6:31Speaker 1: 1st wouldn't be the date that the first game would happen,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but you know what I mean?
- 6:34Speaker 3: Optimistic, right?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Optimistic, right?
- 6:37Speaker 1: So those seem to be the areas of focus. It's
- 6:41Speaker 1: where I think all three of us were drawn to
- 6:43Speaker 1: as we were looking at some of these options. First
- 6:47Speaker 1: base and DH most clearing. I think DH is, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 1: keep in mind that I'm sure part of the plan
- 6:53Speaker 1: is to keep some at-bats there warm for Buxton when
- 6:57Speaker 1: they want to give him a break in the field, ideally.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But certainly those are the three spots we're looking at
- 7:02Speaker 1: the most. And Dan, we'll start with you. Who's a
- 7:05Speaker 1: name that jumps out?
- 7:07Speaker 2: My number one target would be Ryan Jeffers. So he's
- 7:10Speaker 2: a 29-year-old catcher. I've heard of him. He's been out there.
- 7:14Speaker 2: He had a pretty good year. But I think a
- 7:17Speaker 2: lot of teams targeting and catching will think Ryan Jeffers
- 7:20Speaker 2: is their number one target. I just don't see the Twins–
- 7:25Speaker 2: Getting in the five-year game for him, he's 29, he
- 7:29Speaker 2: turns 30 in June, and I think five years is
- 7:32Speaker 2: a realistic option for him. Somebody will do it. We've
- 7:35Speaker 2: seen other teams go after JT, Real Muto, Will Smith
- 7:39Speaker 2: got a 10-year contract extension from the Dodgers. Teams are
- 7:45Speaker 2: not afraid to go five years when the catcher is
- 7:49Speaker 2: an offensive upside guy, and that's what Ryan Jeffers is.
- 7:53Speaker 2: You look at what he's done the last couple of
- 7:54Speaker 2: years and He really seemed to put it together this
- 7:57Speaker 2: year after going more for contact last year and putting
- 8:01Speaker 2: together a really nice 2025 season. But he definitely just
- 8:05Speaker 2: took it up a level in 2026, heading into free agency.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I just don't see the Twins competing in that market.
- 8:13Speaker 2: But I don't know where you go. I mean, do
- 8:16Speaker 2: you slide Royce Lewis to second where he would be
- 8:18Speaker 2: probably a better defensive fit for a full season than
- 8:21Speaker 2: Cody Clemens and then get a first baseman? That ideally
- 8:26Speaker 2: to me is the spot. I like Jake Bowers. The
- 8:29Speaker 2: problem is that's another left-handed bat. And I really think
- 8:33Speaker 2: this team needs right-handed dump. But Jake Bowers, when you
- 8:39Speaker 2: look at everything that's out there, is probably the guy
- 8:42Speaker 2: that is the youngest that can come in and play
- 8:48Speaker 2: significant enough playing time. Because I know you guys are
- 8:50Speaker 2: going to bring up an older guy who can be
- 8:52Speaker 2: a very good fit for this team. in a minute,
- 8:55Speaker 2: but Bowers is 30. He runs. He runs well. I
- 8:59Speaker 2: think he's been running the last three years. I think
- 9:02Speaker 2: he had 52 stolen bases over the three years for
- 9:07Speaker 2: the Brewers. It may have been 30. I can't look
- 9:11Speaker 2: it up in a minute here, but Bowers clearly can
- 9:16Speaker 2: have good at bats. Okay, so his career was 50-something,
- 9:21Speaker 2: and he's had 30-plus of them with the Brewers. You
- 9:24Speaker 2: could just mix him in. He fits in that mold
- 9:26Speaker 2: where you're looking for athletic guys. He's got pop. We've
- 9:29Speaker 2: seen it the last couple of days. He puts together
- 9:31Speaker 2: good at bats. Great at bats. You know, he's going
- 9:33Speaker 2: to be the name that everybody talks about because of
- 9:37Speaker 2: this postseason he's putting together. He was a good fit
- 9:39Speaker 2: at the end of the year. Problem is, is definitely
- 9:42Speaker 2: he is a durability issue guy. I think when the
- 9:44Speaker 2: twins played them in August, he was dealing with a
- 9:47Speaker 2: whole bunch of stuff this year. It's limited his time
- 9:49Speaker 2: in the field, but you know, That's not really who
- 9:53Speaker 2: I want. My real target's a trade target. We'll jump
- 9:55Speaker 2: in that in a minute. But uh as a free
- 9:57Speaker 2: agent goes i i think that jake bowers would be
- 10:01Speaker 2: um a pretty solid uh get for this.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Lineup be a big swing for sure uh can't imagine
- 10:08Speaker 1: that'll be cheap especially after that at bat Last night,
- 10:11Speaker 1: Mickey had one. Didn't he have a great one in
- 10:12Speaker 1: game two, too, where it went like 12 pitches?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, both 11-pitcher bats. He pimped that, too, last night.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Any ball that far back in that stadium, that ball
- 10:23Speaker 4: was hit.
- 10:24Speaker 3: That's way back.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I think we can do a show on places that
- 10:31Speaker 2: it feels the best to hit a home run in
- 10:33Speaker 2: to quiet that opposing crowd. I would have to think
- 10:36Speaker 2: Dodger Stadium. To hit it that far up the bleachers
- 10:39Speaker 2: at Dodger Stadium, which is hard to get it out in,
- 10:43Speaker 2: that might be one of the top places because that
- 10:45Speaker 2: crowd is loud at all times. Their stadium production team
- 10:51Speaker 2: makes it obnoxious with constant noise. But it creates this
- 10:55Speaker 2: incredible environment and a place that is one of those,
- 10:59Speaker 2: when you do it there, you know you can do
- 11:01Speaker 2: it anywhere kind of thing. That was a great moment.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that was sick.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Another reminder, please toss us a like and subscribe. However
- 11:10Speaker 1: you watch or listen, if you're on YouTube, there's a
- 11:11Speaker 1: QR code on the screen right there to make it
- 11:14Speaker 1: super easy for you. More free agent targets in just
- 11:17Speaker 1: a minute.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Hey, everybody. It's the best time of the year for
- 11:23Speaker 5: sports right now. You got the NFL. You got the
- 11:26Speaker 5: NBA about to start. You got college football. You got
- 11:29Speaker 5: hockey going on here. And the best part of all,
- 11:32Speaker 5: you got the MLB playoffs. So if you want great seats...
- 11:35Speaker 5: to the LCS, and then the World Series, wherever that is,
- 11:38Speaker 5: go to SeatGeek. I've used SeatGeek many times for college
- 11:41Speaker 5: football tickets, concert tickets. I don't really need it for baseball.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I got that gold card. But for you out there,
- 11:47Speaker 5: use SeatGeek for any playoff needs that you might have.

- 12:21Speaker 1: So Dan went for the big fish right off the
- 12:23Speaker 1: bat with Jake Bowers.
- 12:26Speaker 2: That would be great.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I also, I think I set my sights lower going
- 12:33Speaker 1: through this exercise, but Since we ended up at first base,
- 12:36Speaker 1: let's stick there.
- 12:38Speaker 2: You're right.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And we'll come back to Ketcher at the end. But Tyler,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I guess, let's hear from you. Who do you think
- 12:46Speaker 1: in that first base DH category?
- 12:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I threw out some. And to Dan's point, there's
- 12:53Speaker 4: a lot of lefties. But the guy whose photo is
- 12:55Speaker 4: right up there– sorry, over there. Did it twice wrong.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Paul Goldschmidt, he's a guy– his name didn't immediately register,
- 13:04Speaker 4: but then once I heard it, I said, that's the,
- 13:07Speaker 4: that's the Josh Bell replacement. Kind of like Dan mentioned,
- 13:11Speaker 4: he's got a, you know, Josh has got, I think
- 13:13Speaker 4: he said $ 10 million option, which is very expensive for
- 13:16Speaker 4: a DH who can't really do anything on the field
- 13:21Speaker 4: for you. And Goldie's a guy who he's proven he's
- 13:25Speaker 4: the literal, the ultimate veteran, you know, hall of fame
- 13:28Speaker 4: candidate type player. And he's serviceable at first base and,
- 13:33Speaker 4: He can help these young guys that are coming into
- 13:35Speaker 4: their own and learn the game and how he attacks hitters.
- 13:38Speaker 4: I mean, the guy, you know, he won an MVP.
- 13:40Speaker 4: He's played in New York now. He's done it under
- 13:42Speaker 4: the brightest of lights. Like, he's kind of checked every
- 13:45Speaker 4: box you can, and he's not going to carry that
- 13:48Speaker 4: huge premium price tag, I would think. And that's right
- 13:53Speaker 4: up the twin's alley. It's an easy addition. You know
- 13:56Speaker 4: you're going to get no issues with him. Um, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 4: you're just saying to keep them on the field is
- 14:00Speaker 4: going to be all you're really going to have to do.
- 14:02Speaker 3: You know, he's, I think he's 39. Um, you know,
- 14:04Speaker 3: he's getting.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Up there and like you said, uh, you know, it's
- 14:10Speaker 4: maybe we'll have a Jim Tomey run 2.0 here and
- 14:12Speaker 4: then he can show up and, you know, bring back
- 14:15Speaker 4: that 35 Homer season.
- 14:17Speaker 3: For us and, uh, right.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Some right-handed slug. I, you know, he had a, I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 1: he had a fine year for being 38 years old. Um,
- 14:25Speaker 1: 111 OPS plus but do you know who else had
- 14:30Speaker 1: a had a pretty decent age 38 season and then
- 14:34Speaker 1: an amazing age 39 season was Jim Tomey when the
- 14:37Speaker 1: twins signed him at the same age and he uh
- 14:41Speaker 1: lit up that first season at in target field at
- 14:43Speaker 1: 2010 must.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Have been the hot dish must have been the hot
- 14:46Speaker 2: dish but here's here's the thing I like about Goldschmidt
- 14:50Speaker 2: 623 innings at first base this year and he was
- 14:52Speaker 2: valued at two defensive runs saved, which is, that's.
- 14:56Speaker 3: That's the one thing that Josh Bell was missing.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Like, I feel like you, you kind of take care
- 15:03Speaker 1: of both first base and DH with that one move,
- 15:06Speaker 1: like him and Buxton splitting DH and him and whoever
- 15:10Speaker 1: playing at first when he needs a day off from that.
- 15:12Speaker 1: So that could be a way to kind of two birds,
- 15:15Speaker 1: one stone. He was a lot cheaper than Josh Bell
- 15:18Speaker 1: last year. Didn't produce quite as much as Bell did, but,
- 15:21Speaker 1: Is he worth a chance that, you know, like he
- 15:24Speaker 1: finds the same target field magic as Jim.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Toney, which I know. Does he want to play in Minnesota?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Does he want to play? Hey, the, the way you
- 15:33Speaker 2: solve that, the guy I like, if, okay, look, all
- 15:38Speaker 2: the checkbook has been thrown out the window.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:41Speaker 2: We're, we're in law.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I noticed that earlier in the show.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I want, I want Raphael Devers. I want, I want
- 15:50Speaker 2: a consistent run producer for this lineup. Rafael Devers, unfortunately,
- 15:54Speaker 2: is owed seven years and $ 211 million from San Francisco.
- 15:59Speaker 2: He turns 30 in about nine days. I think it's
- 16:02Speaker 2: October 24th is his 30th birthday. So that contract runs
- 16:05Speaker 2: until he's 35, 36, and 37 years old, which is
- 16:09Speaker 2: not ideal. I'm not going to sit there and say, oh,
- 16:13Speaker 2: by the way, I guess he'll be 34, 35, and
- 16:14Speaker 2: 36 in those last three years. of his contract, but
- 16:20Speaker 2: still not ideal that you'd be giving him $ 29. 5 million
- 16:25Speaker 2: in those last three years. But he is the run
- 16:27Speaker 2: producer that is potentially the kind of guy that you
- 16:32Speaker 2: put in the middle lineup, you pencil him in, you
- 16:36Speaker 2: see like a Pete Alonzo type, what he got and
- 16:39Speaker 2: what he did for Baltimore this year. Those guys– I
- 16:45Speaker 2: think the RBI has been devalued by analytics. There's no
- 16:49Speaker 2: question about it. It's still a skill. Driving runs in
- 16:53Speaker 2: is a skill. Devers is good at it. The kind
- 16:56Speaker 2: of year he did, I think he ended up with
- 16:58Speaker 2: 33 home runs this year in San Francisco. He did
- 17:01Speaker 2: that in San Francisco. It's a tough place to hit
- 17:03Speaker 2: home runs. He became the Giants' first 30 home run hitter,
- 17:06Speaker 2: I believe. I'm almost positive that it was since Barry Bonds.
- 17:11Speaker 3: It had been a long time.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know, he, I'm sorry, he hit 37.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Now the thing you're trying to capitalize on is San
- 17:20Speaker 2: Francisco is an absolute mess. They have a bunch of
- 17:23Speaker 2: bloated contracts on the books between Willie Adamas, Matt Chapman, Devers,
- 17:30Speaker 2: you know, there's, there's more out there and they're trying
- 17:32Speaker 2: to move on from some of those guys. Can you
- 17:35Speaker 2: convince San Francisco to eat a decent amount of that money,
- 17:39Speaker 2: you know, and, and, and then trade for him. Um,
- 17:43Speaker 2: I mean, I would think that San Francisco is– the
- 17:46Speaker 2: way he finished, I think they're less inclined to move him.
- 17:49Speaker 2: He had a really strong finish this season, and there
- 17:52Speaker 2: was a lot of talk about his leadership. But they
- 17:54Speaker 2: do have Bryce Eldridge ready to step in at first
- 17:56Speaker 2: base right now, and he looks like he is an
- 17:58Speaker 2: everyday stud, a future MVP guy. They'll find other spots
- 18:01Speaker 2: for Eldridge, but Eldridge could fit very easily at first
- 18:04Speaker 2: base for them. Can you convince them with a nice
- 18:08Speaker 2: prospect and willing to take 70% of that money? I
- 18:12Speaker 2: don't know how much. I don't know realistically what it
- 18:16Speaker 2: looks like because, man, it's a big contract, $ 211 million
- 18:20Speaker 2: for seven years.
- 18:22Speaker 1: As you're watching these playoffs unfold and three of the
- 18:26Speaker 1: four final teams in it are not teams that are
- 18:31Speaker 1: sitting on a ton of killer contracts down the line.
- 18:35Speaker 1: It's been an eye-opening postseason for that reason. I know
- 18:40Speaker 1: everyone is frustrated because With the lack of spending, but
- 18:44Speaker 1: don't do it in the wrong way either.
- 18:46Speaker 2: You can end up like a giant. Devers, you're bringing
- 18:52Speaker 2: in a guy who is postseason experienced. If you can
- 18:54Speaker 2: do that, you know, got 303 postseason career average, hit
- 19:00Speaker 2: a few home runs in that. Again, this is just like,
- 19:03Speaker 2: this is spitballing. There's no, this is not, we've had
- 19:07Speaker 2: discussions with the twins about this. I'm just saying, if
- 19:10Speaker 2: I was looking at the twins, that's, I want that
- 19:13Speaker 2: run producer. I just, I feel like I look at
- 19:16Speaker 2: what Nelson Cruz was able to do and what the
- 19:19Speaker 2: twins were able to accomplish with Nelson Cruz.
- 19:21Speaker 4: And that's a benchmark that everyone has. It's like Nelly
- 19:25Speaker 4: showed up, got paid to hit and did it. And
- 19:28Speaker 4: it's like, that's kind of the litmus, the bar that's
- 19:31Speaker 4: been set for those guys now.
- 19:33Speaker 2: It was incredible. No, it was.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 19:39Speaker 2: No, no, it wasn't. It was on an affordable contract.
- 19:43Speaker 2: That's the thing. When they got Nelson Cruz, they got
- 19:45Speaker 2: him on the two-year deal or the one year plus
- 19:49Speaker 2: an option and then re-signed him for a third year
- 19:53Speaker 2: and traded him at the end of that third year
- 19:55Speaker 2: for Joe Ryan. So, I mean, that went about as
- 19:58Speaker 2: perfectly as anything can go. But I don't know that
- 20:03Speaker 2: that's in the cards here. It's just the name I
- 20:05Speaker 2: look at and go, man, I'd really love that. You
- 20:09Speaker 2: had one like that, Duff. You had a suggestion similar,
- 20:11Speaker 2: like make a trade.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Oh, Mr.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Naylor out in Seattle?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I love.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Well, one, I was misled by someone's article or whatever
- 20:25Speaker 4: I read telling me he was a free agent.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Got my hopes up.
- 20:30Speaker 4: But then, no, he's under contract, which means that money
- 20:35Speaker 4: is staying where it is, can manipulate it however such,
- 20:38Speaker 4: but I see him as.
- 20:40Speaker 3: A guy, like an Eddie Rosario-esque.
- 20:45Speaker 4: The other teams cannot stand to see the guy do well.
- 20:49Speaker 4: He gets the boys fired up. He's having fun. This year,
- 20:53Speaker 4: I guess he's figured something out. Maybe he's been a
- 20:57Speaker 4: speedy guy the whole time. We just didn't know it.
- 20:59Speaker 4: He's stealing bags. He's hitting homers. He's letting the other
- 21:03Speaker 4: guy know he got him. And I think that's something that,
- 21:06Speaker 4: Whether you like it or not, it's great to have
- 21:09Speaker 4: in a locker room. Like I said, it brings an
- 21:12Speaker 4: energy that you can't fake, frankly. Some guys try to
- 21:17Speaker 4: rah-rah and get themselves going and things like that, and
- 21:20Speaker 4: he is full tilt. We used to have a coach
- 21:24Speaker 4: that called it white line fever. Once you get on
- 21:26Speaker 4: that baseball field, some of these guys switch flips, and
- 21:30Speaker 4: I think he's one of those guys. I've always loved
- 21:32Speaker 4: competing against him. When he gets you, it sucks. But
- 21:36Speaker 4: at the same time, it's like, dude, he's out there
- 21:38Speaker 4: having a ball trying to win baseball games.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And I've never played with him. I played against him
- 21:43Speaker 3: a lot in Cleveland, obviously.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I remember when he came up and the first time
- 21:48Speaker 4: when he got hurt, it was one of those horrible things.
- 21:51Speaker 4: And to see him, he's had to work to get
- 21:53Speaker 4: back to it, had a decent year this year. And again,
- 21:56Speaker 4: it's the slug, it's the energy, it's the things like that.
- 22:01Speaker 4: He's a guy, I think, that could somehow come to us,
- 22:04Speaker 4: you know, instead of Dan's pipe dream of Devers, um,
- 22:07Speaker 4: you know, and, um, I think he's a little more tangible, um,
- 22:13Speaker 4: you know, between him and I, the other guy I
- 22:14Speaker 4: like is, uh, Ty France. Granted, he's having a great
- 22:18Speaker 4: year and it's going to be hard to get him
- 22:20Speaker 4: to leave San Diego.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Um, assuming they give him some sort of, I do
- 22:25Speaker 3: want to say it again, but, um, Yeah, you know,
- 22:28Speaker 3: it's fun.
- 22:30Speaker 4: But he was a guy they had in-house already. You know,
- 22:32Speaker 4: he had a good season with us.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Was it two years?
- 22:36Speaker 4: I can't remember exactly how long he was there. But,
- 22:38Speaker 4: you know, he's another guy. And I liked France because
- 22:42Speaker 4: he's the righty. I keep in my head, it's like,
- 22:44Speaker 4: we need the righty bats. We've got a dozen lefties.
- 22:47Speaker 4: We've got to mix it up a little bit. And
- 22:49Speaker 4: that's the big thing. It's going to be the righty
- 22:51Speaker 4: that's available that I think will make the most impact,
- 22:54Speaker 4: whoever that ends up being.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Naylor had a little bit of a down offensive season,
- 22:59Speaker 2: but he's hitting in a place where lefties go to
- 23:02Speaker 2: die in Seattle at T-Mobile Park. That's just the hardest
- 23:06Speaker 2: right field. He performed well for them the year before
- 23:09Speaker 2: during their run. He had that story come out this year.
- 23:13Speaker 2: He had that story where he played a prank on
- 23:15Speaker 2: a minor leaguer teammate and it was like a stone Garrett.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And it was like a prank with a steak knife
- 23:22Speaker 2: and the pitcher got a hand or something.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:28Speaker 2: So, so like given how Seattle finished the year and
- 23:33Speaker 2: Seattle had such an ugly season and disappointing season, Maybe
- 23:37Speaker 2: they would break it up. He's got four years and
- 23:40Speaker 2: $ 81. 5 million left on his contract. So that definitely fits.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Maybe if Seattle's looking to shake things up. Because I
- 23:48Speaker 2: wouldn't be afraid of him coming to Target Field and
- 23:51Speaker 2: hitting there. He's familiar with the division. He's from Toronto.
- 23:56Speaker 2: He's a cold weather guy. He grew up in cold weather.
- 24:00Speaker 2: I love that. I love guys that have experienced the
- 24:03Speaker 2: climate and aren't afraid of it. He certainly isn't. He
- 24:05Speaker 2: played in Cleveland. If you can convince them, yeah, that's
- 24:11Speaker 2: not bad.
- 24:12Speaker 3: You can survive that.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Cleveland's very nice.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'm kidding.
- 24:19Speaker 1: If you bring in a first baseman, sign, trade, however,
- 24:24Speaker 1: it seems like it creates a problem for either Royce
- 24:29Speaker 1: Lewis or Cody Clemens getting playing time.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Cody Clemens could be a utility guy. Cody Clemens plays outfield.
- 24:36Speaker 2: He plays second base. He plays first base. I don't
- 24:39Speaker 2: think a left-handed first baseman would create some issues, I think,
- 24:43Speaker 2: for Cody Clemens.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Because Royce Lewis is then playing second base every day,
- 24:53Speaker 2: which I think maybe he's probably a better fit defensively
- 24:55Speaker 2: at second base than Cody Clemens was. He's definitely a
- 24:58Speaker 2: little more athletic, but he looked pretty good at first.
- 25:02Speaker 2: it really is a quandary what they're going to do
- 25:04Speaker 2: over there. Like Cody Clemens has some leadership qualities that
- 25:08Speaker 2: the twins do love. And he had a lot of
- 25:11Speaker 2: big home runs at the right time. So he also
- 25:14Speaker 2: slowed down. Like he ended up being right around a average,
- 25:18Speaker 2: just a tick above average offensively this season. But he's,
- 25:23Speaker 2: you know, shown you a lot for a guy that
- 25:25Speaker 2: you basically claimed ended up at 109 OPS plus Cody Clemens.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Like he, You wish that Royce Lewis' bat was more
- 25:34Speaker 2: like Cody Clemens, and then you could just say, hey,
- 25:37Speaker 2: we're going to make Royce Lewis our second baseman. It
- 25:40Speaker 2: really is not an easy answer, like what you were saying, Zach.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But it seems like first base, second base catchers, the
- 25:47Speaker 2: places where they do try to fix this team.
- 25:50Speaker 1: The first baseman and DH free agent lists are not
- 25:54Speaker 1: very long. So there's going to be competition for Bowers,
- 25:57Speaker 1: for France, for Goldschmidt. Really the only DH... who has
- 26:02Speaker 1: popped in recent years, George Springer. Luis Uriah is also
- 26:09Speaker 1: a free agent to be, yes. And as much as
- 26:11Speaker 1: Twins fans would love to see that, with his defensive limitations,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I just don't know.
- 26:15Speaker 2: And he had a good year working with Ron Washington
- 26:19Speaker 2: at second base. But he does get hurt. That's a
- 26:22Speaker 2: constant for him. He got hurt again at the end
- 26:25Speaker 2: of this season. He always seems to have an ankle problem.
- 26:29Speaker 2: foot issue towards the end of the year that's happened
- 26:31Speaker 2: at least three times I can think of. And the
- 26:35Speaker 2: slug is not there, but he would be a pretty
- 26:37Speaker 2: fantastic guy to put in front of or right after.
- 26:41Speaker 3: What if you went Keishel Buxton?
- 26:43Speaker 4: Put him behind the power guy, I think would be
- 26:47Speaker 4: the move.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yeah, he'd be certainly someone that would catch... the attention
- 26:53Speaker 2: of twins fans. I don't know if it would fix
- 26:56Speaker 2: what they're looking for, but it would just be adding
- 26:58Speaker 2: another good hitter to the lineup. So I don't, these
- 27:01Speaker 2: are decisions. I'm really glad that I don't have to make.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I just get to talk about it.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Tyler always says it like this.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 3: It's fun to play GM. It's not fun to be GM.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Uh, I don't know. I don't know if it's fun
- 27:14Speaker 2: to play GM. I've stressed about picking out these stupid,
- 27:17Speaker 2: like the damn free agent names. The last two shows, uh,
- 27:21Speaker 2: I have not enjoyed this at all. It's like been
- 27:24Speaker 2: like last minute, like, Hey, I got to look at
- 27:26Speaker 2: like 60 names real quick and try to get excited.
- 27:30Speaker 4: You see one, you're like, Ooh, him. And then it's like, wait,
- 27:32Speaker 4: everyone else also wants that guy.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I like Brandon Lowe also second baseman with 31
- 27:38Speaker 2: homers in Pittsburgh. He's hit 39 before he's a really,
- 27:42Speaker 2: he's been a really consistent performer throughout his career. Um,
- 27:46Speaker 2: he's a guy, but he's left-handed too. Like I, it
- 27:49Speaker 2: just feels like everybody's left.
- 27:50Speaker 3: It's like everyone is.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 3: How did that happen? How did it happen?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Going back to catcher, um, Ryan Jeffers, the top catcher
- 28:00Speaker 1: on the market by far. If we, if we assume, yep.
- 28:04Speaker 1: If we assume the twins aren't going to pay up, uh,
- 28:07Speaker 1: for five years of, and by the way, not just
- 28:10Speaker 1: assuming they're not going to pay up. I don't know
- 28:11Speaker 1: if it makes sense for them to pay up as
- 28:12Speaker 1: we've talked about given, um, you know, the cost that
- 28:16Speaker 1: it will take, the term it'll take, and the fact
- 28:17Speaker 1: that Von Lackey, they hope, is the future at the
- 28:20Speaker 1: position in a couple of years. So obviously it wouldn't
- 28:25Speaker 1: make sense for them to give the same kind of
- 28:26Speaker 1: deal to another catcher either. You have Victor Caratini, who
- 28:30Speaker 1: defensively is every bit as good as Jeffers, a bit
- 28:34Speaker 1: of an offensive downgrade. What do you think, Dan, makes
- 28:38Speaker 1: sense to address what is likely to be a hole
- 28:41Speaker 1: after Jeffers leaves?
- 28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, the next best catcher that's out there is Tyler Stevenson,
- 28:46Speaker 2: and he's in that same ilk as Jeffers where he's 29.
- 28:50Speaker 2: He's going to get five years or he'll get a
- 28:53Speaker 2: longer contract because he is– on his career, he's been
- 28:57Speaker 2: a little bit above average offensively. So he's going to
- 29:00Speaker 2: be an attractive option number two for whatever team doesn't
- 29:04Speaker 2: get Jeffers. He's good at blocking, not great with caught stealing. Framing,
- 29:10Speaker 2: not great. His throw to second is not great. When
- 29:15Speaker 2: I looked at it, the name I like, and it's
- 29:18Speaker 2: not going to be anybody that gets you offense, but
- 29:20Speaker 2: I like Austin Hedges a lot. I like a guy
- 29:22Speaker 2: like that who has handled Cleveland staff and thrived in
- 29:27Speaker 2: Cleveland since going over there. He's older. He's 34. He
- 29:32Speaker 2: would definitely be a guy that could split time, but
- 29:35Speaker 2: he is your catcher, leader behind the dish and brings
- 29:39Speaker 2: you the value that way. You look for offense in
- 29:42Speaker 2: other spots. He had a decent year offensively. He was
- 29:45Speaker 2: a little bit below average on the season, but Austin
- 29:49Speaker 2: Hedges to me would be a guy that could step
- 29:51Speaker 2: in and provide leadership qualities at catcher and pair, know
- 29:56Speaker 2: that he comes in and pairs nicely with Victor Caratini. But,
- 30:00Speaker 2: you know, that 702 OPS was just a tick below
- 30:03Speaker 2: the league average. I think he was like a 99
- 30:04Speaker 2: OPS plus guy. Clearly it's one of his best seasons,
- 30:08Speaker 2: and it happens right as he's going into free agency.
- 30:10Speaker 3: He's 34.
- 30:10Speaker 2: It wouldn't be a long-term deal, but I just think
- 30:14Speaker 2: the value he brings as a guy who knows the
- 30:17Speaker 2: division would be very good.
- 30:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that one. That reminds me of when
- 30:24Speaker 3: we got Jimenez.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Just come in, wrangle all the young guys, play your
- 30:31Speaker 4: day games, whatever, but it's having those brains around the
- 30:34Speaker 4: clubhouse and the energy. Sometimes it's just something you can't teach,
- 30:39Speaker 4: and he's definitely got it.
- 30:43Speaker 1: There's always Mitch Garber. 36 years old.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:48Speaker 3: He's got power games in Mitch Garber's.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Very far removed from his, uh, his, his best times
- 30:54Speaker 1: with the twins. But, uh, certainly, uh, we love a
- 30:58Speaker 1: good homecoming, don't we?
- 31:02Speaker 2: Power hitting. He's not, he only caught, Garver only caught
- 31:06Speaker 2: 36 games this year. He just hasn't been able to
- 31:10Speaker 2: handle workload behind the dish the way he used to.
- 31:14Speaker 2: It's funny because, yeah, yeah, he's, he's caught, uh, a
- 31:20Speaker 2: hundred games over the last three seasons. Yeah. So it's,
- 31:24Speaker 2: you know, we're, we're long removed from his days of
- 31:27Speaker 2: being an effective.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Reaching a little bit there.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Fair enough.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Well, he was behind Cal Raleigh. So like he was
- 31:34Speaker 4: basically the backup.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Right.
- 31:36Speaker 4: You know, he wasn't their starter. So it's like a
- 31:39Speaker 4: grain of salt.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Well, there you have it. I can't wait to see
- 31:45Speaker 1: how all of those predictions turn out to not. actually
- 31:47Speaker 1: happen but if any of them do we will not
- 31:49Speaker 1: let you hear the end of it i'm sure but
- 31:52Speaker 1: um we had some news this week which is nice
- 31:55Speaker 1: uh brian reef aimed the new twins pitching coach dan
- 32:00Speaker 1: uh wrote all about it on the athletic he comes
- 32:03Speaker 1: to us from tampa bay where he was their minor
- 32:07Speaker 1: league pitching coach uh and he will now be the
- 32:12Speaker 1: uh the twins pitching coach guy i went to uh
- 32:15Speaker 1: I'd never heard of him, I have to admit. I
- 32:16Speaker 1: went to Google to try to find out more. And
- 32:20Speaker 1: when I Googled him, I learned that he is also
- 32:24Speaker 1: better known as B-Reef and is a Christian hip-hop pop
- 32:27Speaker 1: singer and rapper, a Christian hip-hop sensation, who began his
- 32:31Speaker 1: musical career with the release of his first album, Urgent Message,
- 32:33Speaker 1: in 2003. That is obviously not the Twins pitching coach.
- 32:37Speaker 1: That is a different Brian Reif who... Are we sure?
- 32:41Speaker 2: It's true.
- 32:42Speaker 1: We have never seen them in the same... place at
- 32:45Speaker 1: the same time.
- 32:45Speaker 2: It's crazy. They're only a year apart in age. He
- 32:48Speaker 2: reached there at 47 and Brian Reith, the pitching coach,
- 32:53Speaker 2: is 48.
- 32:53Speaker 1: But safe to say that if by the end of
- 32:56Speaker 1: his Twins tenure, whenever that is, if he replaces that
- 32:59Speaker 1: Brian Reith as the new primary Brian Reith on Google,
- 33:03Speaker 1: it will either be very good or very bad for
- 33:05Speaker 1: the Twins. But anyway, since Google was of little help, Dan,
- 33:10Speaker 1: tell us more about Brian Reith.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Played for the Cincinnati Reds, about 73 appearances over the
- 33:19Speaker 2: 2001 to 2004 seasons. Sixth round pick in 1996. So
- 33:23Speaker 2: he's got the playing experience. I feel like that was
- 33:26Speaker 2: something that Derek Shelton was kind of aiming for, was
- 33:28Speaker 2: a guy who's been out there and at least knows
- 33:30Speaker 2: what it's like to take a mound. And then went
- 33:34Speaker 2: and spent the last 12 seasons with the Rays. He
- 33:38Speaker 2: joined the Rays in 2015 as a short A player.
- 33:43Speaker 2: season pitching coach. He did three years of that, moved
- 33:46Speaker 2: up to single A, was supposed to go to double
- 33:48Speaker 2: A in the pandemic year, obviously that got wiped out.
- 33:51Speaker 2: But then in 2021, got a really cool opportunity to
- 33:55Speaker 2: go to the majors as a pitching development, they call
- 33:58Speaker 2: it pitching development fellow, which meant he was part of
- 34:00Speaker 2: the major league staff. And what I liked hearing from
- 34:03Speaker 2: him about that specifically was what that experience showed him,
- 34:06Speaker 2: because he got to be around Kyle Snyder, who is
- 34:09Speaker 2: obviously the legendary Rays pitching coach at this point. He's
- 34:12Speaker 2: been there for a long time and done a lot
- 34:14Speaker 2: of great things for that organization over the years. But
- 34:17Speaker 2: he said he learned by watching that staff and how
- 34:22Speaker 2: it interacts with players. And it gave him a lot
- 34:24Speaker 2: more confidence in how to handle guys himself. And he
- 34:27Speaker 2: took it back to AAA the last five years and
- 34:30Speaker 2: really learned how to connect with guys across the entire spectrum.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And I think he said when he started being a
- 34:38Speaker 2: pitching coach, at first it was guys like him he
- 34:41Speaker 2: could connect with and he wasn't sure how to do
- 34:43Speaker 2: it with others. And he's learned that and he's gotten
- 34:45Speaker 2: better at it over the years. But mostly, you know,
- 34:50Speaker 2: you think about, and Duffy, you can talk about it,
- 34:52Speaker 2: but stealing from the organizations that do it best. And
- 34:57Speaker 2: he's been in Tampa Bay. He's been immersed in that culture.
- 35:00Speaker 2: for 12 years. He worked with Josh Koch, one of
- 35:02Speaker 2: the twins assistant general managers, who is the pitching guru
- 35:06Speaker 2: for the organization. He worked with him for three years,
- 35:09Speaker 2: said that that work opened up his eyes to all
- 35:12Speaker 2: kinds of things about pitch shapes and data and technology
- 35:15Speaker 2: and how to use it all. And he's had five
- 35:17Speaker 2: years to implement that along with having learned how to
- 35:22Speaker 2: kind of deal with major league guys. And he said,
- 35:24Speaker 2: honesty is one of the best things he said, regardless of,
- 35:28Speaker 2: if the player wants to hear it or not, I'm
- 35:30Speaker 2: honest with them. And he thinks that's what's helped him.
- 35:33Speaker 2: I think a lot of that came from 2021, also
- 35:35Speaker 2: his own playing career, just knowing what works for him.
- 35:38Speaker 2: And here he is ready to kind of take that leap.
- 35:41Speaker 2: He's 48 and you never know with these things, but
- 35:45Speaker 2: I think, you know, that pedigree coming from the Rays
- 35:47Speaker 2: and a dozen years there is not a bad place
- 35:50Speaker 2: to start.
- 35:52Speaker 1: It was very fast. It's been like two weeks since
- 35:56Speaker 1: they announced Mackey.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Like, I'm not kidding. I checked with somebody on Thursday
- 36:02Speaker 2: last week, or maybe it was during one of the
- 36:06Speaker 2: two White Sox playoff games I was covering. I checked
- 36:10Speaker 2: in just to see how the process was going, and
- 36:12Speaker 2: there had not been a lot of movement. Obviously, it's
- 36:17Speaker 2: one of the few things that was going to happen
- 36:18Speaker 2: in October or November, and it did come along very quickly.
- 36:23Speaker 1: It takes us twice as long to hire an intern here.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I'm surprised they got that done in two weeks but
- 36:30Speaker 1: like there's no i don't know that there is any
- 36:32Speaker 1: such thing as a sexy pitching coach hire um i
- 36:37Speaker 1: mean no but like do you do you do we
- 36:42Speaker 1: have any sense of like was there did they have
- 36:45Speaker 1: him picked out already kind of do we think or.
- 36:48Speaker 4: I think they had a list they always have a
- 36:51Speaker 4: list yeah they they.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Have a target list i mean you have josh caulk
- 36:55Speaker 2: um you have this group that wants to get better
- 36:59Speaker 2: at pitching and knows kind of guys who ideally would
- 37:02Speaker 2: fit within their, you know, their belief system, their philosophy.
- 37:08Speaker 2: And so there's no way they had just one guy
- 37:11Speaker 2: and went after one guy. That's not how it works.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I mean, especially, but I do think familiarity with guys helps.
- 37:17Speaker 2: He worked with Taj Bradley a lot at AAA.
- 37:20Speaker 3: And, you know, I checked people. Did he work with
- 37:23Speaker 3: Joe for that matter too?
- 37:25Speaker 6: No.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Briefly at Bowling Green, it looked like four starts for
- 37:28Speaker 2: Joe Bowling Green in 2019. So different Joe Ryan, different him.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Younger guy for himself. But when you go out there
- 37:39Speaker 2: and you start with the list and you just vet
- 37:41Speaker 2: and vet and vet. And I'm sure he was at
- 37:43Speaker 2: the top of their list. I wouldn't be shocked if
- 37:45Speaker 2: that was the case. He's AAA pitching coach for the Rays.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I think we're top five in over the last five
- 37:53Speaker 2: years and whip strikeouts, um, ERA and something else. Another stat. They,
- 38:00Speaker 2: they were solid. I wrote that in my story. So
- 38:04Speaker 2: good stuff. Wow.
- 38:08Speaker 3: They were good at stuff.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Uh, but hashtag, uh, like I think the.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Philosophy stuff, plus lining their stuff.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Plus what, what are you like? like what, what do
- 38:22Speaker 2: you think? Um, cause I, I, by the way, I
- 38:26Speaker 2: even texted Kyle Gibson who got four starts with him
- 38:31Speaker 2: and that it was the end of career. Kyle Gibson,
- 38:33Speaker 2: you've been released by Baltimore and his direct quote was.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Um, let me find it.
- 38:40Speaker 2: He said, he basically said, here, let me find it here.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 38:44Speaker 2: He said, uh, he's the first class individual, but he said, um, he's,
- 38:50Speaker 2: he has an incredible understanding of how to see analytics, uh,
- 38:55Speaker 2: how to use analytics, the best set up a picture
- 38:58Speaker 2: for success. He understands delivery well also, and will be
- 39:02Speaker 2: a huge asset as the twins keep developing pitching. So
- 39:07Speaker 2: the twins identified him as a guy that connects well
- 39:09Speaker 2: with players. Taj Bradley came from Tampa Bay.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Tampa Bay clearly was willing to move on from Taj Bradley,
- 39:18Speaker 2: even though we saw how good he is this year.
- 39:20Speaker 2: So that probably didn't end as well. I know that
- 39:25Speaker 2: with Griffin Jacks, it didn't end as well as the
- 39:27Speaker 2: Twins wanted. It was sort of like a, we'll swap
- 39:29Speaker 2: our guy. for your guy, both talented, but we need
- 39:31Speaker 2: to move on and get them new changes of scenery.
- 39:34Speaker 2: And I know for a fact, the twins dove into
- 39:37Speaker 2: it to find out, Hey, how did you work with
- 39:39Speaker 2: Taj Bradley? And, and checked with Taj Bradley checked with,
- 39:43Speaker 2: there were a bunch of pitchers that are with the
- 39:45Speaker 2: twins now that were with the Rays and Garrett Acton, uh,
- 39:49Speaker 2: Eric Orsi, um, you know, Anders Gomez was briefly there,
- 39:52Speaker 2: but Joe Ryan, and I know they did their, their
- 39:54Speaker 2: homework and checked and got good reports that, that Brian Reese, um, was,
- 40:00Speaker 2: is a good fit and someone that they can work with. And,
- 40:02Speaker 2: and he said he has a good mature relationship with
- 40:06Speaker 2: Bradley and looks forward to working with him again. So I,
- 40:09Speaker 2: I think, you know, that familiarity helps too, but like,
- 40:12Speaker 2: what do you think Duff, um, with the Rays, just
- 40:16Speaker 2: guys that you've talked to over the years that have
- 40:19Speaker 2: come from there, like what, what does that organization do
- 40:23Speaker 2: well from what you've heard from other pitchers?
- 40:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's, they've, and it's become the trend,
- 40:31Speaker 4: you know, everyone's trying to copy everyone's mix, you know,
- 40:35Speaker 4: the recipe, but their big thing is when they really
- 40:39Speaker 4: hit the stride, you have this stuff, we think if
- 40:43Speaker 4: you just attack hitters with your best stuff, don't try to,
- 40:47Speaker 4: cause it was like the glass now approach to, Hey,
- 40:50Speaker 4: you're great. Just throw it over the plate and guys
- 40:53Speaker 4: will get out. And then with that comes the freeness
- 40:56Speaker 4: of starting to let it fly a little bit, not
- 40:59Speaker 4: worrying about so much about hitting the corners. And then
- 41:01Speaker 4: you get ahead of guys and then the strikeouts come
- 41:04Speaker 4: because the hitters have to be more aggressive and it
- 41:06Speaker 4: keeps going that way. And then their big thing, I
- 41:09Speaker 4: remember hearing, one of the first times is like their lanes,
- 41:13Speaker 4: you know, and teams have emulated that, you know, guys
- 41:16Speaker 4: know when they're facing righties and whatnot, but down to
- 41:18Speaker 4: where the analytics now tell these teams, Hey, this guy
- 41:23Speaker 4: faces these three guys with nobody on base.
- 41:26Speaker 3: You have the best chance of getting them out. And
- 41:28Speaker 3: they relayed that before.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Games and before series, like guys knew going into every
- 41:33Speaker 4: single outing. If Jose Ramirez is coming up in the sixth,
- 41:37Speaker 4: I'm facing him today. And it makes it a lot
- 41:40Speaker 4: easier to get up for those spots. And then if
- 41:43Speaker 4: the moment's passed, it's passed. Like you're just not that
- 41:45Speaker 4: guy anymore. And so I think that's what it created.
- 41:49Speaker 4: You know, the closer by committee stuff has kind of
- 41:52Speaker 4: had its successes and not. I think teams have gotten
- 41:56Speaker 4: away from that part of it because the ninth inning
- 41:59Speaker 4: is different. But the Rays have implemented it so well,
- 42:03Speaker 4: you know, and it's tinkering with shapes and vert and,
- 42:07Speaker 4: arm slots and things like that.
- 42:08Speaker 3: You know, it's, if you're unique, you're unique.
- 42:11Speaker 4: You can't, you know, everybody throws their throw individually, but
- 42:15Speaker 4: the Rays in particular, you know, and the guardians for
- 42:17Speaker 4: that matter, they've both got their cocktail that they they've got.
- 42:22Speaker 3: And it's Josh.
- 42:23Speaker 4: I mean, Josh caulk was a big part of it
- 42:25Speaker 4: with Tampa and they let him go, but he came
- 42:27Speaker 4: to us and we all got a lot better. And,
- 42:30Speaker 4: and to see him grab a guy that obviously he's
- 42:32Speaker 4: comfortable with, I think says a lot as well, because
- 42:35Speaker 4: he's making a lot of the pitching decisions and for
- 42:39Speaker 4: him to, obviously I'm going to assume he was in
- 42:41Speaker 4: on that mix of hiring. If he trusts him and
- 42:46Speaker 4: obviously Shelty's probably had some conversation with him and the players,
- 42:49Speaker 4: like it sounds like he's going to be a great fit.
- 42:51Speaker 4: And I think the honesty thing, you know, I think
- 42:54Speaker 4: it was in the quote or maybe on our bottom
- 42:56Speaker 4: line here, but you know, that, that.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Is the big one.
- 42:58Speaker 4: It's being honest with yourself as a player, as a
- 43:01Speaker 4: coach and, and, having the game plan and the ability
- 43:04Speaker 4: to have, like you just said, the mature conversations, that's
- 43:07Speaker 4: the stuff that really matters at the end of the day.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Like we talked about last week, he's been there, he's
- 43:13Speaker 4: done it, he's put his time in. Now he's getting
- 43:16Speaker 4: his shot to be the head cheese, and hopefully it
- 43:20Speaker 4: goes smoothly as possible.
- 43:23Speaker 1: We shall see. We'll move on now to the next topic.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Brooks Lee. Our ham and eggy winner for defensive player
- 43:34Speaker 1: of the year has been recognized as a gold glove
- 43:39Speaker 1: finalist in the American League at third base. Not a
- 43:41Speaker 1: surprise at all, of course. It's right in line with
- 43:47Speaker 1: the analytics and the metrics. He ranked as one of
- 43:49Speaker 1: the best defensive third basemen. Obviously, a position switch earlier
- 43:54Speaker 1: this season that he embraced. But for a season that
- 43:57Speaker 1: began and throughout, we were talking about how lousy the
- 44:01Speaker 1: defense and how big a problem it is it's uh
- 44:04Speaker 1: cool to see at least one area on the field
- 44:06Speaker 1: where that that seems pretty well set dan.
- 44:11Speaker 2: It was a kind of a big move when they
- 44:13Speaker 2: asked him to go in may the the twins he
- 44:15Speaker 2: thought himself at a short stop and he wanted to
- 44:18Speaker 2: prove he could do it and look brooksley got to
- 44:22Speaker 2: the place he could get to he did make but
- 44:24Speaker 2: then when um They just saw too many balls to
- 44:26Speaker 2: get in through. And especially early on when the Twins
- 44:30Speaker 2: were having trouble striking guys out, there just wasn't a
- 44:33Speaker 2: lot of velocity in that bullpen, which resulted in a
- 44:36Speaker 2: lot of balls in play, which resulted in a lot
- 44:37Speaker 2: of base hits up the middle against relievers and put
- 44:40Speaker 2: them in a tough spot. And they asked him to
- 44:42Speaker 2: go to third. And he was a little reluctant at first.
- 44:45Speaker 2: He did it because he's that kind of guy. But
- 44:48Speaker 2: he thought, hey, I'm a shortstop. At the end of
- 44:50Speaker 2: the year, Brooks Lee was saying, hey, I'm a third baseman.
- 44:52Speaker 2: And this was the right move. And he said kudos
- 44:55Speaker 2: to them because they saw this. He's like, my range
- 44:57Speaker 2: plays at third. And we saw a guy go from
- 45:00Speaker 2: a subpar shortstop. In fact, metrically, he was one of
- 45:05Speaker 2: the worst shortstops in baseball at the time they made
- 45:07Speaker 2: the switch to a guy that in the same season
- 45:10Speaker 2: became a gold glove finalist at third base. And look,
- 45:12Speaker 2: the gold glove is subjective. It's not always perfect. I
- 45:16Speaker 2: don't think Fernando Tatis is amongst the finalists in the
- 45:19Speaker 2: National League. And that's a crime. because, man, that guy–
- 45:22Speaker 2: I just think of those catches he made. That grand
- 45:26Speaker 2: slam he robbed in New York where he faked like
- 45:28Speaker 2: he didn't have the ball for a minute. Look, I'm
- 45:31Speaker 2: not going to say that the way that they line
- 45:34Speaker 2: up the gold glove is perfect, but I do think
- 45:37Speaker 2: Brooks Lee was worthy of it. I think he was
- 45:39Speaker 2: like plus nine at third base. He almost caught up
- 45:42Speaker 2: to be an even defender overall in the season because
- 45:45Speaker 2: he was so good at third. where he was so
- 45:47Speaker 2: bad at shortstop and it looks like a home for him.
- 45:51Speaker 2: He just, he has the, he, he has the arm
- 45:54Speaker 2: angles because he's played shortstop. That doesn't mess with him.
- 45:57Speaker 2: He can go low, throw off balance. He's got enough
- 46:01Speaker 2: arm to get the ball over there. At the end
- 46:03Speaker 2: of the year, there were plays where you could tell
- 46:05Speaker 2: he was pissed that he didn't make the play. Like
- 46:08Speaker 2: it was a really impossible, like nine and a half
- 46:11Speaker 2: out of 10 difficulty throwing across his body and, in
- 46:15Speaker 2: the air and there was, it was against the Yankees.
- 46:17Speaker 2: He was pissed that he didn't make it. And I
- 46:19Speaker 2: was like, no dude, that, that nobody makes that play.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Don't worry. Like Nolan Arenado at his prime, maybe makes
- 46:24Speaker 2: that play, but that's the level of.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Expectation he pushed himself to.
- 46:27Speaker 2: And it was a very big development for this team
- 46:30Speaker 2: to afford because you look at him and he is
- 46:32Speaker 2: their third baseman.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Pretty cool stuff for Brooks Lee for sure. Regardless of
- 46:37Speaker 1: how that award goes, loud noises in my house, apologies. Um,
- 46:44Speaker 1: In other news, the Brewers, congratulations. They've made it to
- 46:48Speaker 1: the World Series. They are leading the Dodgers three games
- 46:52Speaker 1: to none. It is impossible to blow that lead, as
- 46:54Speaker 1: we all know. It's never happened before in the history
- 46:56Speaker 1: of sports.
- 46:57Speaker 2: What did they do to harm you as a child?
- 47:00Speaker 4: What did your neighbor do to upset you?
- 47:03Speaker 1: Well, I'll give you an example.
- 47:04Speaker 3: What did your neighbor do to you?
- 47:06Speaker 1: I came home after Monday's show. I had to run out,
- 47:09Speaker 1: and I came back and found this staring at me
- 47:12Speaker 1: across the street from my neighbor. who painted i will
- 47:16Speaker 1: say he did a great job that that looks that
- 47:19Speaker 1: looks like a professional went out there and painted the
- 47:21Speaker 1: brewers logo sorry it's a bad angle i should have
- 47:23Speaker 1: taken a better picture of it but uh.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Do you know him well yeah yeah does is he
- 47:29Speaker 2: a viewer is he gonna be is he gonna tune
- 47:32Speaker 2: in to see his.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Uh he did not know that i had a twins
- 47:34Speaker 1: podcast but i told him Well, first I told him
- 47:37Speaker 1: that I was reporting him to the HOA, the police,
- 47:39Speaker 1: and the FBI.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I'm grabbing something. I'm coming back.
- 47:42Speaker 1: There's no way he got approval from the HOA to
- 47:44Speaker 1: do that, which we should look into that. It could
- 47:47Speaker 1: be a crime.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I like that they've won 109 times and you've tried
- 47:51Speaker 2: to jinx them 108. Just about. Yeah, they have 109
- 47:55Speaker 2: wins this season.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe I should stop. Maybe I'm fueling the fire
- 47:59Speaker 1: for them.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Yeah. One of the.
- 48:02Speaker 3: Few items I have– In my house since I got signed.
- 48:08Speaker 2: That's sweet.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Had to get it to hurt your feelings a little more.
- 48:11Speaker 4: And he signed it twice because he didn't like the
- 48:13Speaker 4: first one.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Nice.
- 48:16Speaker 1: If that wasn't clear to our listening audience, my neighbor
- 48:18Speaker 1: has painted the Brewers logo into his yard, which stings.
- 48:23Speaker 1: But seriously, impressive stuff from the Brewers again last night
- 48:26Speaker 1: in Game 3. That got behind 2-1. The Dodgers seemed
- 48:32Speaker 1: to finally maybe be showing a pulse and then Just
- 48:35Speaker 1: another fantastic at-bat.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Hall came in and shut down that route. First, the
- 48:40Speaker 2: Dodgers were primed. It's 2-1. The bases are loaded. Or
- 48:44Speaker 2: maybe it was 2nd and 3rd.
- 48:45Speaker 3: It was 2nd and 3rd after the 2nd run double.
- 48:49Speaker 2: And the Dodgers were primed to blow it open like
- 48:51Speaker 2: they always do. And Hall comes in and shuts it down.
- 48:55Speaker 2: It's still 2-1. One, that's a gut punch back on
- 48:58Speaker 2: the Dodgers. That's that feeling like, man, it should at
- 49:02Speaker 2: least be 3-1 right now. Just a ground ball. Gets
- 49:06Speaker 2: it to 3-1. And then to come back was... Man,
- 49:10Speaker 2: that Bowers to bat was sick.
- 49:13Speaker 1: They will go for the sweep tonight. That one's tonight, right, Dan?
- 49:18Speaker 2: That is tonight, yes.
- 49:18Speaker 3: That is tonight.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Got flip-flopped. Yeah, Dan pointed out to me that the
- 49:23Speaker 2: Guardians race.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Cleveland's like in an hour.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I said the game was tonight in that graphic
- 49:29Speaker 1: on the screen initially at the beginning, but it is
- 49:31Speaker 1: this afternoon. Old friend Griffin Jacks taking on Gavin Williams
- 49:35Speaker 1: in a big game three. Who you got, Tyler?
- 49:38Speaker 4: I don't know, what do they call him, the big rig?
- 49:41Speaker 4: Gavin Williams, he's freaking impressive, man. And at that point,
- 49:46Speaker 4: I was actually wondering, I was like, when's Griff going
- 49:48Speaker 4: to throw? I'd be interested to see how long they
- 49:51Speaker 4: let him go because they're so familiar with him, Cleveland,
- 49:54Speaker 4: for that. So it'll be interesting to see, but I
- 49:57Speaker 4: don't know, man. Gavin Williams, I bet you he's going
- 49:59Speaker 4: to be sitting 98 to 100 today.
- 50:00Speaker 3: It's going to be tough sledding, especially, I can't remember
- 50:04Speaker 3: the sun playing the day game.
- 50:05Speaker 4: There might be a little as Mourney always talks about
- 50:08Speaker 4: on the broadcast, little shadows depending on where the sun's at.
- 50:13Speaker 4: So it could be a tough day for it to
- 50:15Speaker 4: be a hitter in the land.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Jax has been a full-blown starter since like May for.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Tampa.
- 50:24Speaker 1: So this is not a.
- 50:25Speaker 2: He's good.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:27Speaker 2: He's good. If you're a Twins fan, you probably look
- 50:30Speaker 2: at that going, man, that sucks. But also you get
- 50:32Speaker 2: Taj Bradley for three more years and the Rays get
- 50:35Speaker 2: Griffin Jax for one more year. So, and Taj Bradley
- 50:38Speaker 2: did get named team pitcher of the year and had
- 50:41Speaker 2: a hell of a year. Ham and Aggie winner.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 50:46Speaker 1: One of the first ever. What an honor. We don't
- 50:50Speaker 1: really have it on this day in 1991 today because
- 50:53Speaker 1: the twins were in between the ALCS and the world
- 50:55Speaker 1: series on this day.
- 50:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:56Speaker 2: They clinched yesterday, right?
- 50:58Speaker 3: Yes. They were hung over.
- 51:00Speaker 6: Yes.
- 51:02Speaker 1: But we will, we'll use this space for a programming note.
- 51:07Speaker 1: we mentioned the possibility of doing a little live show,
- 51:10Speaker 1: kind of rewatching, uh, some key moments from the twins
- 51:14Speaker 1: 91 world series. When we're going to do that, it'll
- 51:16Speaker 1: be on October 26. That's the plan. I'll, I'll have
- 51:19Speaker 1: a specific time for it, uh, at some point next week,
- 51:22Speaker 1: but it'll be a live show. Obviously, if you can't
- 51:25Speaker 1: watch it live, you can watch it back later and still, um,
- 51:28Speaker 1: and still see it. Just won't be able to participate
- 51:30Speaker 1: in the live discussion going on at the same time. But, um,
- 51:34Speaker 1: The logistics of it are still being worked out. We're
- 51:35Speaker 1: hoping we can actually show you the game on the screen,
- 51:38Speaker 1: trying to figure out how that all works out. But
- 51:41Speaker 1: if not, we'll have a backup plan. And even if
- 51:43Speaker 1: you're just listening to us, we will have plenty of
- 51:46Speaker 1: chatter to make it hopefully still a good experience.
- 51:49Speaker 2: You know what's cool about that? That will be on
- 51:51Speaker 2: October 26th. That's that Monday, correct?
- 51:54Speaker 3: Correct.
- 51:56Speaker 2: That is the 35-year anniversary of the Jack Buck. Yeah,
- 52:01Speaker 2: the Jack Buck, the famous call. We'll see you tomorrow night.
- 52:06Speaker 2: We'll see you tomorrow night.
- 52:08Speaker 1: We'll probably watch that clip, I would think, on the show.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I said just Game 7 there, but we might sneak
- 52:15Speaker 1: in a little Game 6 too. If there is major
- 52:20Speaker 1: Twins news, that'll be our show for that Monday. If
- 52:22Speaker 1: there is Twins news that we need to talk about,
- 52:24Speaker 1: we'll cover it off and figure that out. That's the
- 52:28Speaker 1: plan for a week from Monday. Thanks, everybody, for listening.
- 52:30Speaker 1: As always, we appreciate it. And one more time, if
- 52:34Speaker 1: you would toss us a like or subscribe, however you
- 52:36Speaker 1: watch or listen, it will be most appreciated. And if
- 52:39Speaker 1: you're on YouTube, there's a QR code on the screen
- 52:42Speaker 1: to make it super easy. We will catch you next time,
- 52:45Speaker 1: next Monday on Twin Cities Territory. Thanks again for listening, everybody.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Have a good weekend and bye-bye.
