Transcript
- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? I'm no mere chick, I'm a
- 0:12goddess, and the first thing I'm going to do is sacrifice your
- 0:15balls. Sunny, welcome to What's your
- 0:17least favorite scary movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:19the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd and all of our
- 0:22favorite and least. Favorite.
- 0:23Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:25movie rightfully has his fan base.
- 0:27Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:29My name is Jesse and welcome back to our monthly bonus series
- 0:33To Be or Not to Be. We are live mostly unedited and
- 0:37mostly and drawn. Travis just did a little bit of
- 0:40live editing because he lost his fucking.
- 0:42Mind. Well, I was a little bit caught
- 0:44off guard by that intro there in this room.
- 0:47Like it vibrated off of 1 of the pieces of equipment in here.
- 0:51I just heard it ringing for a little bit like whoa.
- 0:55You know, the entrance we've done 281 Times Now.
- 0:59It's like, wait, was I supposed to say I'm sorry?
- 1:02Yeah, yeah, we're fucked up a little bit today, which is good
- 1:05because this is a good time to be fucked up.
- 1:08So we're doing Tubi or Not to Be.
- 1:10This is our monthly bonus series where we go to free streaming
- 1:13and we check out a movie we have not already seen and may not
- 1:16have already seen because sometimes some movies just end
- 1:19up on the free streaming services and get a little bit
- 1:21lost to time. Yeah, and I feel like Tubi, you
- 1:24can find a lot of the really, I guess not like super widely
- 1:30known stuff. It's just like you can find like
- 1:33these weird little gems in there.
- 1:34Yeah. So that's what we do.
- 1:36We go scouring through all this shit and we find some good shit,
- 1:39I hope. Yes.
- 1:41Yes. OK so today I got to pick for
- 1:44this month's episode and I picked a little movie called
- 1:48Psycho Beach Party. Indeed you did.
- 1:51Yeah, so we don't do any of our normal stuff because this is a
- 1:54bonus episode, so we are going to go right on into this thing.
- 1:58Are you ready? I am OK.
- 2:00So Psycho Beach Party released January 23rd, 2000.
- 2:06It premiered at Sundance, had its at wide release September
- 2:107th, 2001 and days before. Maybe that is a thing that had
- 2:17it probably had that stacked against its release here.
- 2:23Yeah. So anyways, yeah.
- 2:24That's a dramatic, unfortunate time to have any kind of a
- 2:28release. Yeah, there's a lot of things
- 2:30like. There's a lot of things like it
- 2:33kind of suffered like that. The Strokes had their first
- 2:35album come out around that time too.
- 2:37All right, back on track. We watched it on TV.
- 2:39That's where you can watch it. It's written by Charles Bush.
- 2:42He did the play and screenplay. So this is actually a movie
- 2:46based on a play directed by Robert Lee King, music by Ben
- 2:50Vaughn and the special effects. We don't really have a team for
- 2:55that, but I did the visual effects person and that's Rick
- 2:59Kerrigan. So I will cast Warren Ambrose as
- 3:03Florence Chiclet Force, Thomas Gibson as Kanaka, Nicholas
- 3:08Brendan as Star Cat, Kimberly Davies as Bettina Barnes, Matt
- 3:12Keesler as Lars, Charles Bush as Captain Monica Stark, Beth
- 3:18Broderick as Miss Ruth Forrest, Danny Wheeler as Birdine, Nick
- 3:23Cornish as Yo-yo, Andrew La Vitas as Provolone, Amy Adams as
- 3:28Marvel Ann and Buddy Quaid as Junior.
- 3:31It's a heck of a stacked cast. It's a pretty fucking wild cast
- 3:34right here. All right, time for a favorite
- 3:36game on the show. Budget bug Ted.
- 3:40I'm gonna go with Bud Bug Ted. Yeah, I actually do have numbers
- 3:45for this. Surprisingly, it's 1.5 million.
- 3:47OK, Yeah, not not a bad little budget for this thing.
- 3:51Opening box office 21,000 worldwide gross 268,000.
- 3:56OK, IMDb score 6 out of $10 Yes. OK, Yeah, not.
- 4:01Good. I was all nervous.
- 4:03OK, so. I have three other movies that
- 4:05are released in 2000 and I have a theme that I think fits this
- 4:10movie. It's dudes doing drag.
- 4:13OK, yeah, each of these movies feature a little bit of that
- 4:16going on. 1st movie Cherry Falls, so I'm not going to go
- 4:22into detail about where that happens in there because I don't
- 4:24want to spoil the movie for anybody that hasn't seen it, but
- 4:27it does feature that we have an episode on it if anybody wants
- 4:30to listen to that. So go back, it wasn't that long
- 4:32ago that released August 25th, 2000 in the UK.
- 4:37It actually is a 1999 movie, but I had to make this fit.
- 4:41Oh, I do that all the time. Yeah, budget of $14 million,
- 4:45don't have a worldwide gross. If you want to know about that,
- 4:47go to our episode IMDb 5.3 out of 10.
- 4:51OK, that's a, it's a wow. It's it's a fever dream.
- 4:55That's really the only way I can describe it to people.
- 4:57Also, I'm sorry if I sound like I'm lisping.
- 4:59I did that common mistake of overheating something in the
- 5:03microwave and the roof of my mouth is burnt.
- 5:06Yeah, I hate that. So I'm like hearing it in my own
- 5:08head. So I don't know how much is
- 5:10coming through on mic. I don't hear it.
- 5:11OK. You're good. 2nd movie Scary
- 5:14Movie Scary Movie came out July 7th, 2000.
- 5:16Budget of $19 million worldwide gross 278 million IMDb 6.3 on
- 5:23almost set on IMDb. OK and the final movie Citizen
- 5:27Toxic The Toxic Avenger 4. Now I haven't seen this movie
- 5:31but I did see a scene where he goes under disguise in a bikini
- 5:37contest. So he dresses up in a bikini and
- 5:40he puts on a wig and he goes in and infiltrates that way.
- 5:44So that movie came out October 8th 2000.
- 5:46Budget of 500,000. Don't have the gross but the
- 5:49IMDb is 5.9. OK.
- 5:52Tag lines only got one party till you drop dead.
- 5:58Yeah, all right. And I don't have fun facts
- 6:01because we don't do that on to be or not to be people.
- 6:03This is a bonus episode, so we get right into the meat of it.
- 6:07Actually we don't because I have a little bit of information I
- 6:09want to share. So that's why you've been OK.
- 6:11Yeah. So I want to just take this
- 6:15second to remind everybody that during Pride month, we are
- 6:18covering movies that have some tie to some sort of LGBTQ topic,
- 6:23theme, etcetera, what not. It could be a cast, crew member,
- 6:28plot line, something like that. And all of our Patreon.
- 6:36What is the word? I'm looking for profits.
- 6:39Donations. Donations, yeah, whatever.
- 6:42Everything that Patreon sends us for the month of June for
- 6:45subscriptions and episode purchases and whatnot, that is
- 6:49going to be donated to the Trevor Project at the end of the
- 6:51month. So the link to that is at the
- 6:53bottom of the show notes. If you want to go to our
- 6:55Patreon, check it out. If you just want to be a member
- 6:57for a month, just that way you can help donate to the Trevor
- 7:00Project. That is where you can find that.
- 7:02But I did get a little bit curious last night because
- 7:06Charles Bush did portray Captain Stark.
- 7:09And I did a little bit of research on Charles Bush.
- 7:13So first of all, he not only did this as a play.
- 7:18Did you mention that? Yeah.
- 7:19OK. He performed as Chiclet in the
- 7:24original stage production. Yeah.
- 7:26And apparently he consistently, not always, but most of the time
- 7:31does perform in drag. And I've got a little bit of a
- 7:36quote in his plays, but she usually played the leading lady
- 7:39in drag, he said. Drag is being more, more than
- 7:41you can be. When I first started drag, I
- 7:43wasn't a shy young man, but a powerful woman.
- 7:46It liberated within me a whole vocabulary of expression.
- 7:49It was less a political statement than an aesthetic. 1
- 7:53His camp style show simultaneously send up and
- 7:56celebrate classic film genres, which I think we can see inside
- 7:58Kuku's party, Bush has said. However.
- 8:01I'm not sure what campy means, but I guess if my plays have
- 8:03elements of old movies and old fashioned plays and I'm this
- 8:06bigger than lifestyle lady, that's certainly campy.
- 8:08I guess what I rebelled against was the notion that campy means
- 8:10something is so tacky or bad that it's good, and that I just
- 8:13didn't relate to. So yeah, I don't think that's
- 8:16the case. No, no, I don't.
- 8:18That's not how I would qualify. You can't.
- 8:20Me neither. It's one of those things that
- 8:22it's kind of hard to describe, but you know it when you see it.
- 8:25That's the thing I've, I've always struggled to actually
- 8:27define it. But yeah, it's just like one,
- 8:29it's like a fill, yeah, type thing.
- 8:30You you fill it out. Yeah.
- 8:33So yeah, I just wanted to share that little bit because I
- 8:35thought that was interesting. I wouldn't say I went down a
- 8:38full rabbit hole because we're also recording our main episode
- 8:42this week and I was doing research on that as well.
- 8:44But I did, I did dig a little bit.
- 8:46Charles Bush has a whole website if you want to learn more about
- 8:49him. So just a little fun facts.
- 8:52Cool. All right, so thank you for
- 8:54doing a little bit of extra info for this one.
- 8:57OK, so I guess this is the part where I tell why I chose this
- 9:02movie for this month indeed. So I wanted to try and find
- 9:04something within the theme of our theme this month, which is
- 9:08Pride month. And it's really hard to do that
- 9:12for a movie you don't know anything about because the whole
- 9:15point of this is to, you know, do a movie that we've never seen
- 9:19before. So I just like went on to IMDb
- 9:23and I did like a special search for horror and gay and like, I
- 9:28got a bunch of things there. But The thing is, like, some of
- 9:31that stuff is like, you never know, like what extent it's
- 9:35gonna be. And I honestly didn't know the
- 9:37extent of it in this movie either.
- 9:38But like, I did see that we had somebody like a man playing a
- 9:42woman in this movie. So I was like, OK, that fits.
- 9:46And also I saw Nicholas Brennan and that I was like, that's
- 9:49pretty cool. And then I saw Amy Adams was
- 9:51like, OK, this seems like it's going to be really interesting.
- 9:53I like the name Psycho Beach Party, and it's just like a
- 9:56spoof on, you know, slashers and beach movies.
- 9:59And it seemed like it was going to be a good time.
- 10:01So I was like, fuck it, let's do that.
- 10:02Also a couple of names that I was really excited about, Lauren
- 10:06Ambrose and Thomas Gibson. And Lars is played by, I forget
- 10:10the is Keesler. Yeah, we have previously talked
- 10:15about him Better not on the show in Scream 3.
- 10:19He is the actor that plays the Dewey parallel in the Stab
- 10:25movies. Yeah, yeah, it's a wild, wild
- 10:29cast for this thing. So that's really cool.
- 10:32And yeah, I, you know, that's why I chose this.
- 10:35OK. All right, so let's do our good,
- 10:37bad, ugly and absurd. What you like about it?
- 10:41Oh my God, I think this is so it's so funny and it it it, it's
- 10:46not in an in your face kind of way.
- 10:48It just lets the humor speak for itself.
- 10:51I love the part like there, there are just like a lot of
- 10:54little moments that are really funny and really stand out.
- 10:58I think the cast, performances are all fantastic and this movie
- 11:04knows what it's doing. It knows it's a parody, it knows
- 11:06it's a spoof. And I think that's one of the
- 11:08great things about it, coming from a stage play that has
- 11:10probably been performed, edited, yeah, changed multiple times and
- 11:15then is being brought to the screen.
- 11:16So I think, and it's staying in the hands of the person who
- 11:19wrote it. I think that that's that helps
- 11:22it a lot. Yeah, it felt like the movie
- 11:26honestly played out like a play. Yeah.
- 11:28Like I felt like I was watching more of a play than a movie
- 11:30honestly. And I'm I'm generally OK with
- 11:33that. I think it worked for this style
- 11:35of movie I. Think it worked too, but
- 11:37generally I could take it or leave it type thing with that.
- 11:39Like if it's a play I'll watch a play, if I want to watch a
- 11:43movie, I'll watch a movie. You know what I mean?
- 11:45That's that's how I feel about a lot of Tyler Perry's movies,
- 11:49because he, I think he comes from like a theater background
- 11:52and a lot of his movies feel much more play like to me.
- 11:56And when I learned that he came from a theater background, I was
- 11:58like, oh, that explains it. Yeah.
- 12:00That's pretty. Crazy that that does make sense
- 12:02though. Is that all your goods?
- 12:07Sorry, I got really distracted. Yeah, I just, I had such a good
- 12:12time at this movie. Yeah, I was really surprised
- 12:16with how funny it was to like a lot of moments.
- 12:18I actually was laughing. I can't remember any specific
- 12:22moments. We'll get into those, I'm sure
- 12:23whenever we actually started talking about the movie.
- 12:25But like, they have a lot of funny characters in this.
- 12:29Yeah, everybody does a great job with acting, I think.
- 12:32Shit, what's your name? Warren Ambrose does a really,
- 12:35really good job playing three different people, essentially.
- 12:40Yeah. I don't know, man.
- 12:42Like, I can't really speak to the surf movies.
- 12:44I can't speak to the spoof, like if it's a good spoof or not,
- 12:47because I've never really watched any of those.
- 12:49And, you know, like, I do enjoy that part of this movie because
- 12:54it is really goofy and it's really fun, you know?
- 12:58I like that it doesn't take itself seriously.
- 13:01It's just, yeah, I don't know. It is a good time, All right?
- 13:05What's bad? I didn't love the ending.
- 13:08The ending is kind of harsh, man.
- 13:10The ending's kind of confused, so the whole thing spoilers,
- 13:13obviously. The whole thing is that Patina
- 13:15ends up buying the rights to the story and turns it into a movie,
- 13:20so whatever, we get that. But it ends with we're meant to
- 13:25believe that this is the true story of Florence or Chiclet or
- 13:29whatever name you want to use for her.
- 13:31But we saw how it played out in real time.
- 13:34But then we're meant to believe that the real story is that she
- 13:36was actually in the hospital, which means she wouldn't have
- 13:38met Patina at all. But then she's also in the back
- 13:41seat of the car. It's.
- 13:42Confusing because the the movie, it's like the movie within a
- 13:45movie. So I think we were watching like
- 13:47that was all part of the movie that they were watching because
- 13:52I that's a dream in that movie. That's so confusing.
- 13:54Yeah, I, I mean, honestly, it's, it's a little bit weird.
- 13:58Yeah, I don't like it either. I hate those little cop out
- 14:01endings where it's like, and none of it was real.
- 14:03You know, that I, I just don't, I'm not really a big fan of
- 14:06that. Yeah.
- 14:08Was there anything else? I mean, that was really the big
- 14:10thing for me. I was really grooving with the
- 14:13movie up until that point. And then I was just like, I
- 14:15don't feel like I love the ascending.
- 14:17Yeah. OK, for me, if I'm approaching
- 14:21this from like a horror lens, I think the horror elements are
- 14:24super weak in this. It takes a huge backseat.
- 14:28Even though, you know, Psycho Beach Party.
- 14:31I mean, it kind of it's insinuating that we're going to
- 14:34get some horror in there. But like all of the kills, most
- 14:37of the killers are off screen and we barely have any time with
- 14:41it. The killer shows up once every
- 14:4330 minutes. It feels like we never actually
- 14:46see like the killer until the end.
- 14:48And I don't know, like I just if if I'm wanting to watch like I
- 14:53came to this also wanting a horror movie.
- 14:55So that could be a big part of it, like my expectations.
- 14:58And I didn't really get much of that.
- 15:00I got more of a spoof movie than a horror movie and.
- 15:04I think so you're saying this and I'm thinking as you're
- 15:07talking. So I wonder if part of the
- 15:11Psycho is like a reference to the movie Psycho, you know, And
- 15:14Norman Bates is like, kind of has.
- 15:18Oh, it's what personality. Yeah.
- 15:20Where he's his mom. And that's a whole thing with
- 15:23Florence is her, one of her alter egos is Ann Bowman, her
- 15:28mom's former identity. And I think it would have been
- 15:32great if we had just left it at that.
- 15:34I don't know why we needed that tiling character.
- 15:36Yeah. I didn't really love that.
- 15:38Yeah cuz her playing like a black person.
- 15:41Yeah, and it just, it felt. Awful.
- 15:43It was a little bit weird, Yeah. I mean, I'd also argue like, I
- 15:46mean, Psycho's a horror movie, so it's still like bringing the
- 15:49horror to the to the title. Yeah, but that's what I'm like.
- 15:53That's what got my brain thinking about it so.
- 15:56Yeah, yeah, you could be on to something there.
- 15:59I OK what? What's ugly?
- 16:04I guess just the the time that this was set in like the 60s,
- 16:09Yeah, like. Like women can't surf.
- 16:12Yeah, you should be focused on having babies and also Kanaka
- 16:20using a loophole that she's got a split personality to try and
- 16:26have sex with a teenager. I was gonna that's my ugly.
- 16:28She's 16. Yeah, which he's probably one of
- 16:31those guys like age you consent, age you consent.
- 16:34But like it's really gross when you really think about it cuz
- 16:37he's clearly like a dude in this.
- 16:39I'm gonna guess 30s. He's an older dude in
- 16:43comparison. Thomas Gibson has always been
- 16:45about 37 years old. Well, yeah, he's just.
- 16:50He's definitely an adult and she's definitely not an adult
- 16:53and there's definitely a sexual relationship there.
- 16:56And yeah, I think that that was really kind of fucked up.
- 16:59I. Agree.
- 17:01Yeah, absurd. There are a lot to pick from in
- 17:07this, but I do want to talk about how Kanaka almost
- 17:09exclusively speaks in rhyming couplets.
- 17:12He does doesn't. Yeah.
- 17:13That's another thing that I thought was like, oh, this is
- 17:15totally a stage play type thing because that's a thing that you
- 17:18would see in a play. I think it's, I think it's nice
- 17:21because again, it's some of that subtle humor that I was talking
- 17:24about where like it's never pointed out and it's never like
- 17:28stressed. It's just something that you're
- 17:30like, is this motherfucker just rhyming all the time?
- 17:34So I think that's that's really funny.
- 17:36I love Bettina's character, absolutely loving Berdine like
- 17:43under like having this deep subtextual reading to her
- 17:48characters and she's like, that's what I've been telling my
- 17:50ancient. Yeah, I I like her roles.
- 17:54I like the three headed monster lady thing that was.
- 17:57Yes, I was sex kitten from something there was like a
- 18:00tarantula 1. Like all of the titles are like,
- 18:04Oh yeah, we've all heard of these, like B horror, like, Oh
- 18:07yeah, absurd titles. Yeah, one of my absurd things
- 18:13was Xander's actor. His name?
- 18:16Star Cat. What?
- 18:17They don't elaborate on that at all?
- 18:19Why the fuck is he called Star Cat?
- 18:21Why are any of them called what they like?
- 18:23We get chiclets in the game of Origin, but that's.
- 18:25It all the names provolone had something to do with cheese.
- 18:29He has some kind of provolone incident that definitely
- 18:32happened. yo-yo. I mean, maybe yo-yo was
- 18:36involved. Maybe he went back and forth on
- 18:38a thing one time. Oh you fucking yo-yo Kanaka.
- 18:42I don't know Junior. He could be the second of his
- 18:49family. He could be a junior.
- 18:51What does TJ stand for? Is TJ such an egregious nickname
- 18:55that they have to just shorten it to TJ?
- 18:58Thank Jesus cuz he said that one time like TJI don't know man it
- 19:04was weird. This movie is just fucking
- 19:06absurd throughout honestly. We have a whole dance off with
- 19:10Amy Adams and I. Love those dance.
- 19:13Off the dance off was pretty cool.
- 19:14I I'm not going to lie, I liked it.
- 19:16There was like no ramifications for it though.
- 19:20Like it didn't really matter. Ultimately it.
- 19:21Just humiliated Marvel in. There's just so many weird plot
- 19:26points in this movie. Like we also suddenly have a
- 19:29haunted house on the beach and it's just, I don't know man.
- 19:34Also isn't it weird like how they loop the killer in even
- 19:38though the killer had no relation to anything other than
- 19:40being like what was the motive? It was a motive.
- 19:45So he when he was a child, he lived in that house on the beach
- 19:48and killed his whole family. And then he grew up, pretended
- 19:51to be a Swedish foreign exchange student, and then started
- 19:54killing people with imperfections.
- 19:59OK, it's just, it was a weird motive.
- 20:01Yeah, it was hard to follow a little bit.
- 20:05OK, whatever. I don't really have anything
- 20:07else, I'm sorry to add. So what do you rated?
- 20:11My God, I had so much fucking fun with this movie.
- 20:13I loved it. I'm gonna give it a nine.
- 20:17Damn, when we were watching it, I was like, oh, Jesse's gonna
- 20:19love this. I knew immediately as soon as I
- 20:21start playing like this is a Jesse.
- 20:23Movie. Yeah.
- 20:23I was getting so like emotionally invested in it.
- 20:28You teared up at one point. Guys, I want provolone and yo-yo
- 20:33to just have a happily ever after.
- 20:35It can't be too easy for two gay men in the 60s to just, like,
- 20:38love each other. Yeah, I know it's pretty tough.
- 20:41Yeah, you get it all in your feelings for that.
- 20:44Yeah, and especially because I was like, Oh well, one of them
- 20:46is about to die, for sure, For sure.
- 20:48Yeah, I thought they were going to be split like that too, but
- 20:51thankfully that did not happen. I I enjoyed this movie.
- 20:55I had a good time with it. I'm not, like, in love with it
- 20:58like you are, but I did enjoy it.
- 21:00I'm going to give it a 6 1/2. OK, That's a goofy movie, man.
- 21:07Yeah. 7.75 starting average. OK, solid.
- 21:11All right, cool. Well, let's get on into this
- 21:14then. How about it?
- 21:15All right, so we start off with me taking a ton of notes, trying
- 21:20to keep track of what's happening, and really all it is,
- 21:22is that they're driving. Yeah, man, the movie, like it
- 21:26starts hard and fast with like we're in, we're thrown into like
- 21:30a movie, like a movie that they're watching.
- 21:33It's like one of those 50s horror movies, like a chick with
- 21:36three heads. She grows to be 50 feet tall and
- 21:39starts eating people and shit. And there are a lot of elements
- 21:41going on in that movie, too. Yeah, there are.
- 21:44It seems like a pretty interesting movie, to be honest.
- 21:46And then we cut out and we see a bunch of teenagers watching at
- 21:49the drive in. Well, Florence and Burdine are
- 21:53watching. Everybody else is making out.
- 21:55Yeah, and well, Star Cat's also eating an ice cream cake or Ice
- 21:58Cream Sandwich. Yes, but he's doing it lewdly
- 22:01while making eyes at Marvel Anne, who is eating hers lewdly
- 22:05as well. Yeah.
- 22:06I guess they're like making out in a sense, through extension,
- 22:09through ice cream sandwiches. It's the language of love.
- 22:13That is a love language for some.
- 22:15So forints gets sick of everything, like everybody
- 22:19making out. So she's like fucking I'm going
- 22:20to go get a hot dog. So she goes to the hot dog stand
- 22:23and the hot dog concession dude is distracted with another
- 22:28person there. That's also ordering, which
- 22:29causes Forints to snap. Don't exactly know what's
- 22:33happening yet, but but we can go ahead and say now she's
- 22:36switching over to Anne Bowman here and she starts to flip and
- 22:40then it cuts. It cuts back to Berdine at the
- 22:43car and she looks over and the woman in the car next to her the
- 22:47her make out buddy is gone so she checks on the woman and
- 22:51finds her throat slit. So Florence and Berdine the next
- 22:54day are stopped by the cops who want to ask a bunch of
- 22:57questions, but Florence's mom, who's fucking Aunt Zelda, by the
- 23:01way, like that's Aunt Zelda. As soon as I heard her voice, I
- 23:04was like, Oh my God, that's Aunt Zelda.
- 23:05And I was like, who? And I was like, you're
- 23:07uncultured. I've never, I know now Sabrina.
- 23:10I've just, I've never really. The only thing I remember from
- 23:12Sabrina is Sabrina and the black cat.
- 23:15That's all I need to know, honestly.
- 23:17I'm I'm totally good with. That that's not all you need.
- 23:19To know, that's all I need to know.
- 23:21Well, especially the actress was born in Falmouth, KY, so that's
- 23:25a. Little fun fact.
- 23:26That's right, yeah. You did mention that.
- 23:28Yeah, she's. Close to cops.
- 23:29Yeah, She was like, do you have a subpoena?
- 23:33Is she being detained? She's like, I need to take her
- 23:37to her OBO lesson. She's.
- 23:39A sovereign citizen. I'm traveling as an entity.
- 23:42I'm a corporation. OK, So what is your?
- 23:48Chips. OK, so we now see Marvel and she
- 23:51invites Florence and Berdine to go to the beach do some man
- 23:55hunting. Yeah, and they're kind of
- 23:57shocked because we're like, oh, we thought you wrote us off as
- 23:59nerds. And we found out later the only
- 24:01reason she invited them is because she lost her car
- 24:03privileges and Berdine has a car.
- 24:05Yeah, she's like, oh, man, it was the silliest thing.
- 24:06Like I just like I killed like an old woman.
- 24:08Like, you know, like I. Ran over an old.
- 24:10Lady dentist thing, man, Yeah. She was old.
- 24:14She's over there, she's trying to, you know, give the boys a
- 24:17show to entice them to get them to come over, but they're more
- 24:20interested in roughhousing amongst themselves until she
- 24:24undoes her top and makes Starcat come over there and help her tie
- 24:27it up. Yeah.
- 24:30So let's see. Florence is super interested in
- 24:35the surfing abilities of the dudes though, and she's really,
- 24:38really wanting to participate. But anytime she tries to ask
- 24:41about it, they're like, dude, you don't need to be fucking
- 24:44worrying about it. You're a chick, you can't do
- 24:46that. Shit, I love how sensitive these
- 24:48guys are because she is like, wow, it's so amazing.
- 24:54It has to be so much hard work, but you make it look really easy
- 24:57and he goes, it's so much hard work.
- 24:58I'm like, she's not that. Yeah, it's super.
- 25:02Fucking dramatic. Like the camera like rotates
- 25:04around. All the dudes are like, Oh my
- 25:06God. It's like it's tubular, it's
- 25:07cowabunga. It's like rad, you know, there's
- 25:09like hoops and shit. Like it's, it's tough, man.
- 25:13It's man's job. I and Nicholas Brennan is so
- 25:16much playing is so much playing Xander.
- 25:24I find that he does that in anything I've seen him in.
- 25:27To be fair, I've only seen him in three things, but it's all
- 25:29been Xander. Yeah.
- 25:31The other movie. What was the other movie that he
- 25:32was in? That we were, Yeah.
- 25:33Demon Island. Yes.
- 25:35Demon Island. Yep.
- 25:37So Florence decides to be a tricky little thing and she
- 25:42trips junior and then offers some food as a replacement.
- 25:47And while he's eating the food she starts asking about great
- 25:51Kanaka wanted to know where he lives, etcetera and so on.
- 25:54So I wish she can go down there and ask questions and he's like
- 25:58denying her. But then she, like, sees some
- 26:02circles on his shirt and they start spinning in visual effects
- 26:05away, and she becomes Anne Bowman.
- 26:09And she's being very dominatrixy.
- 26:15Yeah. Yeah, very aggressive.
- 26:17It's a really weird shift. He's into it.
- 26:23It's upsetting cuz I'm like she's still 16.
- 26:26I like those shots though, where you get the pieces of fabric
- 26:30that are spinning whenever she has that transformation.
- 26:33Those are really cool, really well done anyways, he agrees.
- 26:37Yeah, well, he agrees. While she's Anne and then all of
- 26:39a sudden she's Florence again and he's very confused.
- 26:41But whatever, she's got lessons. Yeah.
- 26:43So we get like a little montage of them doing some surfing.
- 26:46He's doing like belly rolls. Whenever he's doing his surfing
- 26:49bit. It's like one of those.
- 26:50It's those scenes that you've seen with old movies where
- 26:54they're surfing, but it's just like.
- 26:55It's a green screen, yeah. There's like a display in the
- 26:57background of waves crashing, but they're just standing there
- 27:00and they're just, like, acting like they're balancing, yeah,
- 27:02but they're like, goofing around up there too, which is kind of
- 27:05funny. Yeah, and I told Travis, cuz
- 27:06Thomas Gibson tends to play very, very serious characters,
- 27:10and so it was just funny watching him just like cutting
- 27:12up and doing the little Billy rolls and.
- 27:14Yeah, yeah, it was really funny. I like that he was having fun
- 27:16with himself. All right, so the boys are
- 27:19giving Kanaka a hard time because he's teaching a girl
- 27:23and. Then then they're like, she's
- 27:25not even a chick. She's like half a chick.
- 27:27She's a chicklet. Yeah, and this is where she gets
- 27:30her nickname. Yeah.
- 27:31So they start to embrace her here.
- 27:33She starts to roughhouse with the boys a little bit on the
- 27:35beach. I like this little game they're
- 27:36playing where Yo-yo runs over with his head and tickles her
- 27:39like with her with his hair. So one of them, tji think it's
- 27:46TJ gets concerned about something and he trusts his gut
- 27:51because he says I've had a man's hairy balls since I was 8.
- 27:54Yeah, yeah, because it's like it gives him this ability to see
- 27:59what's going on in the world. He also like details like crash
- 28:02that happened on I-64 and all kinds of other shit.
- 28:05And I, and I love it because they all have these like things
- 28:08going on with them and they declare them in such poetic,
- 28:13flowery ways. Because it's a play, basically.
- 28:16Yeah, let's see, Junior. He suffers from the heartbreak
- 28:20of psoriasis. God damn it, you know what
- 28:22happened. When I heard that, I just played
- 28:25that fucking commercial. Somebody has psoriasis and it's
- 28:30like the commercial where like the dudes go into the movie, be
- 28:32like, oh shit, I got psoriasis. And then this woman going
- 28:35grocery shopping, she's like, Oh no, I got psoriasis.
- 28:37Yeah, put down the storage, please.
- 28:38Yeah, yeah. And then Star Cat, I'm trying
- 28:42really hard not to call him Xander.
- 28:43Star Cat studies that. He's taken 3 semesters of
- 28:46psychology, so he knows what he's talking about.
- 28:49Yeah, Northwestern. Yeah, so like he he gets that
- 28:54little itch from his balls. They're basically ball.
- 28:56Excuse me. And he notices that somebody's
- 29:00walking out of the haunted Elkins house, which they give
- 29:04the whole story about it being haunted.
- 29:06And why not We then we're. Going to cut over to a diner
- 29:10real quick. The server there she actually
- 29:13is. Also in legally blunt too.
- 29:16She was one of the senators. Oh yeah, and we get this girl.
- 29:20I can't remember her name, but she's super fucking mean.
- 29:23Rhonda. Rhonda.
- 29:24Yeah, Rhonda is. Oh my God, She's not even like a
- 29:27fun movie bitch. She's just a bitch.
- 29:29Yeah, man, she just goes over and every line in this movie,
- 29:33she goes over there to just fucking tear people down.
- 29:36She's like Pat, that's the server's name.
- 29:39She's like Pat. I'm really sorry for your female
- 29:41patterned hair loss, but I don't need all of that hair in my
- 29:44chicken Alfredo. God damn, Rhonda.
- 29:47Yeah, she also picks on Berdine because Berdine's over there
- 29:50waiting for Florence to show up for the lunch that they
- 29:53scheduled. Then she's a no show.
- 29:54And then she was like basically making her feel bad for having
- 29:56no friends. Yeah, so Florence is out on the
- 30:01beach and they are. They're out on the beach, and a
- 30:08bunch of the guys decide they're going to go down to Kanaka
- 30:12Shack, but not birding. Florence and Junior stay back,
- 30:17and then she sees some sand whirls on his detox.
- 30:21Yeah, they're, they see some girls walk by and they're like,
- 30:23let's invite them to the luau. That's what it is.
- 30:25Yeah, and Florence is really wanting to be a part of the
- 30:27luau, but they're really not wanting her to be a part of the
- 30:29luau. They're wanting to get some
- 30:31other girls to go. So yeah, they go follow.
- 30:33Junior's left alone on the beach and Florence is left behind with
- 30:37him. So then we cut and it is now
- 30:41Anne Bowman. She's back or she's she switches
- 30:44to Anne Bowman after they leave and she's mad at the boys for
- 30:46leaving. So we cut to the next day, we
- 30:48see a heart on the beach. Junior's missing and the boys
- 30:52are over there at Kanaka's place.
- 30:54They're just kind of roughhousing around.
- 30:56Yo-yo and provolone I believe are.
- 30:59Out there oily fight. That's really funny the way that
- 31:03plays out because like somebody just takes like a bottle and
- 31:06starts spraying it on them and then they just start like
- 31:08wrestling and getting super, super sensual with each other
- 31:11and I. My head cannon is that they
- 31:13actually support them as a couple and they're just waiting
- 31:16for them to come out. This right here, I think.
- 31:18Was there a way of trying to get them to like heroes, Like make
- 31:20them oily, like, you know? It's like when you take your
- 31:23your Barbie dolls together and me go and kiss.
- 31:26That's what they're trying to do with yo-yo and provolone.
- 31:29But in the process of all that rough house and one of them
- 31:31actually picks up a dismembered hand.
- 31:34A psoriatic A psoriatic hand. Man, I was so ready to pronounce
- 31:39that word correctly and I fucked it up.
- 31:42And you know what? It's still impressive the fact
- 31:44that I didn't even know psoriatic was a word.
- 31:46I only know it from all the commercials about psoriatic
- 31:48arthritis. Oh God damn it.
- 31:50There's too many commercials about that shit out there.
- 31:52Yeah, so they find the hand and they start freaking out.
- 31:56So the. Police are back.
- 31:57Yeah, they're a question in everybody.
- 31:59Everybody's got Air Thai alibis except performance, but.
- 32:02Kanaka vouches for her. Yeah, and we see here that
- 32:09Kanaka and the detective had a history, Stark.
- 32:12Yeah, they have a history together.
- 32:14So Florence talks to I can't read this word Lars, she talks
- 32:24to Lars. She she is having like moments
- 32:27that she can't remember and Lars and sis.
- 32:32Oh this is one of my favorite parts.
- 32:33Right here, as my mother used to say, get your Hefian Lefian.
- 32:38Yeah, it's just like fucking Swedish and gibberish.
- 32:41Yeah, but he says it was such sincerity that it's just so
- 32:44funny. He delivers that line perfectly.
- 32:46And she's like, oh, that's what they say over.
- 32:48Here, drive us. At the beginning of this movie
- 32:49he was like, part of me thought this was a Scars guard.
- 32:51He kind of did seem like a Scars guard.
- 32:53He's tall and blonde and does a convincing Swedish accent.
- 32:57He really does. He's pretty good at it.
- 32:59So we now see the boys confront the woman that came from the
- 33:04Elkins house on the beach. And wouldn't you know, it's the
- 33:07actress from the movie they saw the drive in the other night,
- 33:09The three headed pizza waitress. I love the way that like you
- 33:12look familiar. Wait, Provolani, put your head
- 33:15on one shoulder, Chicly put your head on her other shoulder and
- 33:18they're like. Yeah, it's.
- 33:21Funny. And so they're all freaking out.
- 33:22She's been hiding out until the studio agrees to to her terms.
- 33:26Yeah, give her more control, let her do more serious roles.
- 33:31And then this is where Berdine shows up and she completely
- 33:33fangirls and she, she's got like, again, like I said, she's
- 33:38got a really deep, like some textual reading of her
- 33:40characters. And Berdine's like, that's what
- 33:42I've been my agent. Do you want to be my secretary?
- 33:45She's also really mad at Florence.
- 33:47She's calling Florence out for ghosting her on their lunch that
- 33:50they were supposed to have. Which is fair.
- 33:51Yeah, and then she's also just realizing that Florence really
- 33:54doesn't want anything to do with it anymore, so she agrees to be
- 33:57the assistant because of that. Chiclet is out and I'm just.
- 34:02I switched between calling her Chiclet and Flow in my notes.
- 34:05But she is out there surfing and Star Cat watches her and she
- 34:08crashes and he's concerned. So he goes out and he rescues
- 34:12her and he gets the water out of her lungs.
- 34:16And then she's like, what'd you do that for?
- 34:19And they're fighting and she's like, Oh yeah, sure.
- 34:21It's so easy for you, Mr. Perfect.
- 34:23He's like, don't call me that. Do you know how hard it is being
- 34:26perfect? Expectations of being perfect.
- 34:29And then she's just really hammering the perfectness of
- 34:32him. And then it's like she's
- 34:34complimenting him. He's like don't do that, stop
- 34:37it. He like goes running away and
- 34:39she. So my little sister, when she
- 34:41was like 3 years old, the worst thing in the world you could
- 34:44sell her was that she's cute. She.
- 34:47Hated being called cute. She's like.
- 34:50Which of course, was always adorable when she did it.
- 34:53She's playing into it. Yeah.
- 34:56So we now see the boys they've bring, or they're bringing
- 34:59Misses Byrne. I can't fucking remember her
- 35:02name. Just call her Bettina.
- 35:03Bettina, they're bringing Bettina some flowers.
- 35:06Yeah, they're they show. She shows them the picture that
- 35:10she found of the Elkins family. Yeah, Berdine found the Elkins
- 35:13family photo. And then they tell her the story
- 35:15about the murder, and then they're like, oh, hey, let's
- 35:18have a slumber party. Berdine's got a spell book on
- 35:21how to exercise spirit, so they're just all going to get
- 35:24together and do that. Yeah, and Mom's not too happy
- 35:27with Florence for wanting to go do that, because that's all
- 35:29going to end up in some sex words.
- 35:31You type shit. I mean, maybe.
- 35:34That, I mean, yeah, I mean it was, it was going in that
- 35:36direction. Later on it goes in that.
- 35:37Direction. We can't say for sure it won't.
- 35:39Yeah. And then Anne, no, not Anne
- 35:42emerges. It's actually Tyree.
- 35:44Tylene. Tylene who emerges and.
- 35:47Slaps her mom. Yeah.
- 35:49And then she turns back. Really.
- 35:50And she's like, mom, are you OK? Just like, you really don't know
- 35:53when that happens to you. You can go to your slumber party
- 35:58as long as there are no boys there.
- 36:00I don't understand why she doesn't just have this
- 36:02conversation with her daughter about this shit.
- 36:05Like it's clearly affecting everybody's lives.
- 36:08I think she is very much of the school of thought that if you
- 36:11don't talk about it and don't remember it, that it's just
- 36:14better. Yeah.
- 36:16And yeah, I guess so. This was the 60s, All right, so
- 36:20we're at the Exorcism Sleepover. That would have been a good
- 36:23title for this movie, too. Exorcism.
- 36:24Sleepover. I would watch that movie.
- 36:26Chicklett talks about the Black House with Star Cat and she's
- 36:30like she does the friend of a friend type thing here and she's
- 36:33like he's like Berdine's having this shit and.
- 36:36She's like, I didn't say it was Berdine, he goes.
- 36:38Yeah, but you only have one friend.
- 36:39Yeah, and then she's. So like she sees a painting
- 36:42behind him and the spirals yeah, the eyes are which part of me
- 36:47wondered if this was meant to be like a big eyes type painting,
- 36:49which I think is just funny because later on a.
- 36:52Big eyes painting. It's, I forget the artist's
- 36:55name, but it was like her style was to do like, extra big eyes.
- 36:58And there's a movie called Big Eyes starring Christoph Waltz
- 37:01and Amy Adams. Interesting.
- 37:04So I was like, oh, that's a fun little tie.
- 37:06And it could have been intentional, but yeah.
- 37:08Because it was before that, Yeah.
- 37:09Yeah, had to have been. Yeah.
- 37:12OK, so fuck man, this movie goes to many places.
- 37:15It's hard to like get your when you go on a tantrum, it's hard
- 37:17to like collect yourself to go back to it.
- 37:20They hug it out. They make a.
- 37:20Truce. Yeah, and as they're hugging
- 37:23Marvel, Ann comes around the corner and Ann mouths fuck.
- 37:27Yeah, she's like they're, they're wearing matching shirts
- 37:31too. And and Starcat.
- 37:35Yeah, yeah, it's really cool. Marvel, Ann.
- 37:37Now Ann Bowman I. Said Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, she is
- 37:40Ann Bowman. God, this movie's confusing.
- 37:43Yeah. What kind of name is Marvel in?
- 37:45I don't know it's. Also, I feel like we need to
- 37:47talk about that. That is a weird name.
- 37:49Yeah. It's like a fucking Marvel
- 37:50superhero. All right, So it's like.
- 37:53The daughter of a Marvel superhero?
- 37:55Yeah. You're right, yeah, Miss
- 37:57Marvel's daughter. Martian boy hunter.
- 38:01Yeah. All right.
- 38:03So boy gets knocked at the door and gets stabbed.
- 38:07I think this is TJ. This is TJ.
- 38:09Yeah, he was supposed to be meeting Burnett.
- 38:11Bernadette. The fucking names in this movie.
- 38:17Bernadette. Bernadette.
- 38:18Let's see. I'm gonna just keep referring
- 38:19Bettina Burns. There we go, Barnes.
- 38:21I don't fucking know, Bettina. So Bettina had set up this like
- 38:27they they were going to hook up in the bathroom and he's waiting
- 38:32for her to do the hook up, but we see somebody with Jolo gloves
- 38:35knock on the door and he answers it and gets stabbed in the head.
- 38:38And this movie does get Jolo Y at times but.
- 38:40Yeah, yeah, they they kind of have a Jolo killer going.
- 38:44So then we hear a scream whenever Burdine and Florence
- 38:52are talking about the split personality thing, and everybody
- 38:55screams because somebody found the body and they all go and
- 38:58they check it out, and then this gets the cops to come to the
- 39:01party. Yeah, so they're interviewing
- 39:04everyone and Stark has a flashback to when she was a
- 39:07younger cop and she was with Kanaka and they're making out
- 39:11and he's like, we got to plan the wedding.
- 39:12They're. Doing a little bit more making
- 39:14now they're full on fucking in the backseat of a car.
- 39:18Anyway, he's like, we've got to plan the wedding real quick.
- 39:22And she goes, well, I'm sitting for the sergeant's test and he's
- 39:24like, you don't need to worry about that.
- 39:25You need to be worrying about having babies.
- 39:27And that's when she dumps him. So Stark realizes that all of
- 39:32the victims have some sort of imperfection.
- 39:34So the woman at the drive in had a hair lip, the so junior had
- 39:43the heartbreak of psoriasis, and TJ only had one nut.
- 39:48Yep. I could not read the word
- 39:50heartbreak there. So Mom is in the kitchen and
- 39:54she's sharpening a knife. And she was like, I can't stand
- 39:56imperfection. Yeah, you know, we're starting
- 40:00to get a little science and might be her.
- 40:03So the group is The surfing group is mourning the loss of
- 40:06their friends and they discuss canceling the luau.
- 40:08But you know, Kanaka's like, no, we need to, we need to honor
- 40:13Neptune. And Florence is like, besides,
- 40:16they wouldn't want us to cancel the luau.
- 40:18And somehow that winds up with her being invited to the luau,
- 40:21even though nobody really wanted her to come.
- 40:24Yeah. And then Kanaka realizes that
- 40:27it's the circles that bring out Anne.
- 40:29So he's like trying to bring out Anne, except he brings out
- 40:33tylene on accident and then brings out Anne.
- 40:36Yeah, so we cut over to the mean girl who is at the diner.
- 40:42She approaches the table of fuck, what's her name, Bettina
- 40:48and all of them. And she's doing her best to try
- 40:51and insult everybody there. She makes Bertine very
- 40:56self-conscious about herself, her age, and why not?
- 40:59Bettina. She makes Bettina
- 41:01self-conscious, saying that she's got lines on her face, so
- 41:03she's like, I'll be back. Yeah, and then we see you later
- 41:06on. Fuck.
- 41:09What's the Rhonda? She's outside of the diner and
- 41:12the killer with the the gloves gets her wheelchair and pushes
- 41:17her into something. I don't know, it's an off screen
- 41:20killer. We don't exactly see what
- 41:21happens, but we see a wrecked wheelchair later on and a dead
- 41:25body after the fact. This is when Anne Bowman walks
- 41:29into the diner. She's got a feather boa and a
- 41:31cigarette holder, darling, and she's talking to them as like an
- 41:35old style film actress. And Pat, the server comes and
- 41:40takes the cigarette away and says you're not even old enough
- 41:42to smoke. And then all of a sudden she is
- 41:45Florence again and Prevaloni and yo-yo are confused and Bernie is
- 41:49trying to cover for her and be like, she does great
- 41:51impressions, doesn't she? And then I hear Patina scream.
- 41:54Yeah, and that is that where they found the body?
- 41:56Yes, physical will. The wheelchair's turned over to
- 41:59heads removed and it's spinning on the wheel of the wheelchair.
- 42:03Yeah, and then of course the cops are there because they're
- 42:05there all the time. A question Bernie and then the
- 42:09detective questions the boys start getting.
- 42:13The boys fuck with her though. Do they question Bertine or
- 42:16Bettina? Because you said Bernie.
- 42:19Man I I'm so fucked up. I'm not saying names anymore in
- 42:23this movie. I'm saying friend she's friend.
- 42:26So they question friend, friend gives as much information as
- 42:30possible. Then boys are also questioned
- 42:33after the fact and cop detective asks them if there's anything
- 42:39different about them because they are suspecting that the
- 42:43killer's going after somebody or people that are different than
- 42:46other people. Star Cat is missing a nail on
- 42:50his big toe and Provolone hasn't pooped for 64 days.
- 42:53I'm pretty sure you actually die at that point.
- 42:56Probably, yeah. And.
- 42:57No, I'm being like actual literal.
- 42:59I'm being actual literal too. Probably provolone, though.
- 43:03He's like, yeah, you know, actually there's something
- 43:05different about me. I don't really know.
- 43:07I feel different inside. No, that's yo-yo, and he's
- 43:10looking. At yo-yo and he's like I.
- 43:11Feel different inside, like when I look at provolone.
- 43:16Yeah, he kind of comes out here to Provolone and it kind of
- 43:18freaks Provolone out and he runs out of the room.
- 43:21So Berdine is sitting with Florence in her room and they're
- 43:24talking. She's like, I just, I miss us
- 43:27being really close, we're best friends.
- 43:28Then she starts leaning like she's going to kiss, but Lars
- 43:31interrupts because he every time he puts his hand into his pocket
- 43:35he feels a small prick. He needs all his pants fixed.
- 43:42And then they are gonna like, Florence is really worried about
- 43:49going to the luau because she's really worried, like, what if
- 43:51she blacks out and berdine just like is telling her like, you've
- 43:55got to go, you've got to go. We cut to Marvel Ann and she
- 43:58dumped Star Cat. And then that leads to Florence,
- 44:04like, comforting him, and she tries to talk to him about SEX.
- 44:11And it's this whole funny scene because she was like, well, what
- 44:13kind of stuff did you do with Marvel, Ann?
- 44:17I'd be like, well, I might put my arm around her and nuzzle her
- 44:21neck and she might kiss my chest.
- 44:26And then he gets into very like in the same tone, gets into very
- 44:29graphic sexual details. Well, yeah, yeah, it it gets
- 44:33pretty, pretty heavy there and it freaks chick lit out and she
- 44:37goes running away from the whole thing.
- 44:39Well, and she runs off to Kanaka Shack and he is like, oh hell
- 44:44no, Kanaka is twice your age. So he's trying to tell Kanaka
- 44:47off and Kanaka's like, no, no, no, but wait, watch what I can
- 44:50do with the circles. It's going to bring out a
- 44:52totally different person. It's fine, it's great.
- 44:54And then of course, once chick like gets there, they're like,
- 44:59there's a bunch of arguing going on and it ends up with Kanaka
- 45:02accidentally punching her, trying to punch star cats.
- 45:05She passed out. Ruth shows up and she was like,
- 45:07you missed your, you missed your outbound recital.
- 45:12She's very distressed about all of this.
- 45:14Ruth is her mom. So that night she's drunk and
- 45:18Lars comes in to ask to use the car.
- 45:21And she's like, I don't use it. Anyway, Florence is not to go to
- 45:24the luau. Will you please change the light
- 45:27bulb? Here.
- 45:29Yeah, she gets a little handsy with Lars here.
- 45:31And he becomes very uncomfortable and again, ugly
- 45:34ugly. I forgot about this in the midst
- 45:36of talking about, yeah, Kanaka and Florence, but this is just
- 45:41as bad, especially because at this time, what we assume Large
- 45:45to be is a foreign exchange student.
- 45:48Yeah. And that's like she's in a
- 45:50position of power over him because he's staying in her
- 45:51house. Yeah, not only that, also
- 45:53presumably, you know, he's a not adult.
- 45:56Yeah, he's still in high school. So anyways, we're at the Luau
- 46:00Luau starting. We get a big old dance off that
- 46:03goes on here. With the live music being
- 46:05performed by luchadors. Yeah, it seems like a Halloween
- 46:08party. Seems pretty awesome to be
- 46:09honest. So you said a Halloween party
- 46:12and I'm how is it a Halloween party?
- 46:14Because you said this last night too.
- 46:16Because they're dressed up in masks.
- 46:19But they're like luchador masks. Yeah, it just seemed like a
- 46:22Halloween vibe, not any deeper than that.
- 46:25Well I just nobody else was in masks so that's why I was
- 46:28confused. Yeah, it's just people in masks.
- 46:30Made me think Halloween OK. Yeah.
- 46:33OK, we're back at the house. Florence's house.
- 46:35Berdine climbs up into her window and busts Florence out to
- 46:39go to the luau. Yes.
- 46:41We then cut back over to the luau.
- 46:42Stargat's wandering around. He's asking Marvel, Ann and
- 46:46everybody else where Chiclet is. Provolone is so stressed about
- 46:51the luau. His spread didn't work out the
- 46:54way he wanted it to. Things are missing.
- 46:56They're not set up the way he wants to.
- 46:57And yo-yo says listen, it's going to be OK.
- 47:00And then they kiss. Yeah, and this is where Jesse
- 47:03teared up at right here. Because I just knew one of them
- 47:05was going to die after that. Yeah, I mean, they really are
- 47:08making it seem like somebody's about to die.
- 47:09And I thought it was going to be yo-yo because yo-yo.
- 47:12Like he was the most reluctant to talk about anything
- 47:15different, although I guess now he was just thinking about being
- 47:18gay. Yeah, which I'm glad that they
- 47:20they didn't house it as gay being an imperfection.
- 47:23Yeah, but in the 60s, I guess I could see that.
- 47:25Having been. Like a thing that would have
- 47:27been a reason for this, but yeah it so anyways.
- 47:31Star cat finds Florence. And at the same time, Kanaka
- 47:36sees Lars talking to Wedge Riley, who just got out of the
- 47:40big house, and he confronts him. And Wedge Riley is like, well,
- 47:43if you want this to be a real honor to Neptune, we need to
- 47:47sacrifice a virgin. And there's no virgins around
- 47:50here. And Florence is like I.
- 47:52Am, yeah, and I've never seen anybody willingly be a virgin
- 47:56sacrifice before, but Florence is all for it.
- 47:59You have to, because we've watched House Bunny together
- 48:02multiple times. The virgin sacrifice I'm
- 48:06thinking here is like a killing. One, I don't think they were
- 48:09playing any killer. Probably not, but I never know
- 48:11what these things. That's the thing.
- 48:12Like, I don't think you should willingly like volunteer to be a
- 48:16sacrifice for anything because you never know what that means.
- 48:18OK, so the ritual begins. They have her up on this throne
- 48:25thing, they're carrying her, and she snaps to Anne.
- 48:29Because they're doing like a circle around her.
- 48:32And she orders them to drop her and put them on the ground.
- 48:36The mom and the cops all arrive and they bust the party.
- 48:41And Star Cat like because they want to arrest Florence and Star
- 48:45Cat's like, no, wait, hold on, I'm going to hypnotize her.
- 48:49And Ruth is like, don't let don't let him do this to her.
- 48:53And Stark is like, I'll do the better.
- 48:56And I speak lobotomy. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:58Which I think was actually a thing back then too.
- 49:01So he successfully does the hypnotization of her and.
- 49:05She first goes through like she's a bunch of radio stations,
- 49:08and then she's 7 1/2 again and she sees her mom, who is Anne
- 49:13Bowman, and she's not going to take Florence and Frankie to the
- 49:17movies because she's busy with a sailor man.
- 49:19So Florence and Frankie go to the park and he wants to be
- 49:22pushed really high on the swing. He wants to go over the top.
- 49:26And she pushes him so hard and he just whoops and he dies.
- 49:31So I was confused about this. Was Anne Bowman like a other
- 49:35personality of the mom too? No.
- 49:37So what happened was after this happened, Ruth realized her mom
- 49:42realized that she that Florence didn't remember anything.
- 49:47So she took it as an opportunity to move.
- 49:49She changed her name to Ruth Forest.
- 49:53OK. And then she just, you know, she
- 49:57looks like Florence didn't seem to remember anything.
- 50:00So I just took it as a blessing. Bettina wants to buy the rights
- 50:04to this story so that way she can make it a movie.
- 50:08And Stark says not so fast. We've got to arrest Ruth for
- 50:11murder. One of the things that they had
- 50:13was a clue was the license plate of the car that drove past.
- 50:18I think Rhonda's murder was an anagram for Ruth Forest.
- 50:23And that scene was so funny with Stark like being like put the H
- 50:28before the T. Yeah, yeah, it kind of it goes
- 50:30on for a little bit just like different names.
- 50:34Florence and start cat. They share a moment they're
- 50:37about to hook up, but Wires is like hey, I'll drive you home
- 50:40Florence. So she goes home with Wires and.
- 50:43Then the car goes like. I was really surprised to learn
- 50:45of your problems. Meanwhile, the others are
- 50:49cleaning up and they take another look at the Elkins
- 50:52family photo and they draw a pair of glasses on the little
- 50:56boy and they're like, it's large.
- 51:01So we come back over to the car. Florence has managed to hop out
- 51:05the passenger door. The old tuck and roll.
- 51:07Yeah, and she's running into the house and Lars is chasing after
- 51:11her. No, she's running into the drive
- 51:13in. Oh, yeah.
- 51:13Yeah. Yeah, that's right.
- 51:14Yeah. Yeah, and Lars, he's dropped the
- 51:17accent, he's just Larry now. And she she's changing between
- 51:22her different personas as they're fighting and they
- 51:26managed to climb up like to the screen as the pals and cops
- 51:29arrive. The marquee, I love that
- 51:31setting. That's cool.
- 51:32Yeah, it's it's actually like really tense because whoo,
- 51:35that's big fall. Yeah.
- 51:37So Larry's closing in on her and she becomes Anne and she like.
- 51:42Becomes tylene I think actually. Well, she becomes Tylene at one
- 51:44point, but when they're up on the marquee, she becomes Anne
- 51:47and she fights and then start gets up there just in time to
- 51:50shoot. And Larry falls and they're
- 51:53climbing down and Florence just jumps into Star Cat's arms and
- 51:59Star jumps into Kanaka's arms and Star Cat pins Florence.
- 52:04And it seems like everything's happy.
- 52:06And she wakes up in the hospital and she's got to go to shock
- 52:12treatment. And all of the workers there are
- 52:15people from the movie, so Junior's one of the attendants
- 52:18there, and I can't remember who the other person was.
- 52:21Yeah, I don't remember either. But it's the boys.
- 52:25They're they're doing that. Yeah, and Rhonda and Rhonda's
- 52:27still a bitch. Yeah, I can see why she would
- 52:29weed over to be a mean person in the dream too.
- 52:33And then it cuts out from there to it being a drive in movie
- 52:37that teenagers are watching and they're just kind of commenting
- 52:41about. It Yeah.
- 52:42And the girl is like, oh, no, this is based on a true story.
- 52:45I'm personally very glad that Anne Bowman's in prison.
- 52:47And then all of a sudden we have Lauren Ambrose jumping out for
- 52:49the backseat going, Yeah. And that's how it ends.
- 52:53That's how it ends. Yeah, I'm with you on that, man.
- 52:55That ending is kind of weird. Yeah, I just, I don't know, I'm
- 52:59I didn't need the twist ending. I would have been fine with it
- 53:04ending cheesily. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:07I mean, I guess you could kind of call that a cheesy ending if
- 53:10you want to, but it's just, I don't know, I just hate the fake
- 53:13out aspect to that. Just let it in naturally.
- 53:18OK? So yeah, that's that movie right
- 53:20there. Indeed.
- 53:21Did you change your rating after talking about it?
- 53:24No, I still love this movie. OK, yeah, I'm not changing money
- 53:27either. I'm gonna keep it at 6 1/2 all.
- 53:29Right. What would you want more from
- 53:31it? I'd like to update horror
- 53:33aspects of it. OK, yeah.
- 53:35Have the killer be more present, have it be more of a factor of
- 53:38the movie here because it takes a major backseat.
- 53:41Like if we count screen time of actual like killing and seeing
- 53:45killer on here, I would I'd say it's under a minute if I'm being
- 53:50realistic, other than like when Lars comes out in this chase and
- 53:53after which I, you know, I don't even know if I even really count
- 53:58that. I didn't really feel like a
- 53:59killer moment, OK. It was just weird.
- 54:01Yeah, it was a lacking. OK, Yep.
- 54:05Dream sequel. Well, do you want it to take
- 54:14place in real time or like, do we do a sequel to the movie that
- 54:18was within the movie here? It would be fun to see it kind
- 54:22of like updated for modern times and sensibilities, you know,
- 54:25kind of see how to play with like today's movie tropes since
- 54:30it is like a parody type movie. That's true.
- 54:32Yeah, that. Yeah.
- 54:33Take different genres other than like the surf stuff of the time.
- 54:36Like, yeah, what? What would be a thing to parody
- 54:40you in this day and age? Maybe if you want to get like
- 54:49more horror elements to it, maybe like have it parody.
- 54:52Like I know you hate the same elevated horror.
- 54:56OK. So you'd have some fun playing
- 54:59around with some of that, like maybe you make it like overly
- 55:03obvious imagery and metaphors. Grieving.
- 55:08Yeah, lots of grieving. Muted colors.
- 55:12Muted colors. Yeah.
- 55:13More grieving. Yeah.
- 55:15Yeah. OK.
- 55:16Sure. Yeah.
- 55:16I think that that would probably be good.
- 55:19OK. OK.
- 55:20That sounds good to me. Yeah.
- 55:21All right. How do you relate to?
- 55:30I think I related to Junior because he just seemed happy to
- 55:32be there and I would have just been happy to be there.
- 55:36OK, I also relate to Junior because while I don't suffer
- 55:40from the heartbreak of psoriasis, I do suffer from the
- 55:43heartbreak of eczema and it is, I don't love it so.
- 55:50Man, that's sad. It's heartbreak.
- 55:53It is heartbreak, yeah. It's heartbreak.
- 55:55I'm being open here and I feel like you're mocking me.
- 55:57I was being vulnerable with you and all of our listeners.
- 56:01I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 56:03OK. Laugh at me.
- 56:04So on Tubi, we do Scouts favorite part, right?
- 56:08Yes. So Scouts favorite part.
- 56:12What would that have been? I am going to say whenever the
- 56:26like Rhonda gets killed in the wheelchair.
- 56:28No, obviously Scott's favorite part was when Florence slapped
- 56:35her mother. Oh God, we got that on joking.
- 56:38Because like, she like perked up when that happened.
- 56:41She was like, yeah, she was like, oh, oh, we, we slap and
- 56:44mom's here. And then she kind of like slide
- 56:46at me. We got video of her slapping you
- 56:47too doing the Judy scene from Sweep way.
- 56:50Camp, Yeah. Yeah, that's fair.
- 56:53That's actually a perfect moment for Scout.
- 56:56OK, well I guess it's time to do some reviews.
- 57:00All right. So I have pulled 2 reviews, one
- 57:02good, one bad. So we're starting off with the
- 57:05bad. A dissenting opinion.
- 57:09How do you parody movies that are already parodies?
- 57:11I've noticed that Psycho Beach Party has good reviews from
- 57:14everyone. Well, sorry to buck the trend,
- 57:16but I did not enjoy the film. I think much of it could be my
- 57:19age. After all, I remember the beach
- 57:21movies of the 60s because I grew up in the 60s and the films were
- 57:24already parodies of themselves. The original beach movies were
- 57:28terrible and they made no bones about it and were meant to be
- 57:31dopey. So making a newer film that
- 57:33makes fun of them really cannot hit the mark, simply because
- 57:36making a bad movie about bad movies isn't really all that
- 57:39funny, at least if you're familiar with the genre.
- 57:42If I wanted to see incredibly broad acting, bad riding in a
- 57:45dopey putt, I'd just watch Beach Blanket Bingo or How to Stuff a
- 57:49Wild Bikini. The only real difference is that
- 57:52Psycho Beach Party has more sexual innuendo and some
- 57:54killing, but for me that just isn't enough to recommend it.
- 58:00I'm kind of disagree. I don't think parody is always
- 58:02making fun of something. It could be kind of like a like
- 58:05a love letter to a genre or sub genre.
- 58:09Yeah, I just, I can kind of see the argument of like parodying a
- 58:12parody. Yeah, that could be tough.
- 58:15But that's one of those things like I can't really speak to
- 58:17that cuz I'm not familiar with the movies that this is
- 58:19parodying. Yeah, and I think I'm trying to
- 58:23remember. I think it said online Charles
- 58:26Bush was born in the 50s, so he'd be familiar with the beach
- 58:31movies as well. It would have been something
- 58:33that he would have grown up with.
- 58:34So I don't think it was like I. Don't think you write this if
- 58:37you're not familiar with that. Like, who chooses to write about
- 58:40this if you don't really know or weren't really watching that
- 58:43shit? Yeah, I don't know.
- 58:45Like, I mean, I think it couldn't work.
- 58:47I think it did work. I think maybe it helps to not be
- 58:49familiar with that stuff. Maybe it might actually help.
- 58:52I think the writing was good though.
- 58:53I saw I just kind. Of disagree with it.
- 58:56Yeah, I thought it was pretty good too.
- 58:57I saw a lot of opinions of people, like positive opinions
- 59:00saying because they were familiar with those movies that
- 59:03they liked this movie. So I think like the parody
- 59:05worked for most people. And it is a type of humor that
- 59:08like, isn't universe. It's a more dry humor and I
- 59:12think that's fine, but I understand why that doesn't
- 59:16appeal to some people as much. Yeah, I can understand it too.
- 59:19Yeah, this movie is absolutely like, I could see it being
- 59:23divisive. Yeah, I was going to say it's, I
- 59:24can understand how it's not for everybody.
- 59:26It's definitely for me, but I can see how it's not for
- 59:29everybody, yeah. OK, let's move to a positive.
- 59:33What is wrong with most of these people?
- 59:36I have no idea what people were expecting when they saw this
- 59:38movie, but it was great. I do not think it was ever
- 59:42supposed to be taken seriously. Everyone in the film is
- 59:45fantastic. I was even surprised to see
- 59:47Kimberly Davies put in a good performance.
- 59:50This will definitely become one of those cult films that people
- 59:53will discover years from now and love Above all things.
- 59:56It shows us that cinema does not have to be curious or serious to
- 59:59be good one. Oh I was checking what year this
- 1:00:02was written in because I was like cult film discovered later
- 1:00:05that they love. And yes, this review was written
- 1:00:07in 2004. Then for the record, the last
- 1:00:10one is 2018. Oh wow, yeah.
- 1:00:13So different stuff there. Anyone who loves to watch 60s
- 1:00:17beach movies because of how bad they are.
- 1:00:19Anyone who likes schwalk teenage horror flicks, old and new.
- 1:00:22Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its content, not just Sarah
- 1:00:25Michelle Gaylor's content. You will love this. 8 1/2 out of
- 1:00:2910. Yeah, I I can see some of the
- 1:00:33like, not just the Nicholas Brennan of it all, but like the
- 1:00:36Buffy, like we're going to be a little cheesy and have.
- 1:00:40Buffy's kind of can't be there, yeah.
- 1:00:42It is, and it's fun with itself. It's got a different kind of
- 1:00:46humor written into it, but it is like for all of the problems
- 1:00:48which are sweet and it is really well written.
- 1:00:50Yeah, yeah, bad people can be good at things.
- 1:00:54Yeah, unfortunately, yeah. But yeah, no, that's one of
- 1:00:58those things too. Like I, I, I did enjoy the
- 1:01:01writing of this movie. I thought it was pretty funny,
- 1:01:02honestly. Like the characters are really
- 1:01:04interesting. Like, I don't know, it's a, it's
- 1:01:07a wild ride, man. So I guess that brings us to the
- 1:01:11titular question. To be or not to be?
- 1:01:15Oh, fuck yeah. Yeah, I'm going to say yeah,
- 1:01:16definitely. I think people should check this
- 1:01:18out. I agree.
- 1:01:19I think this is I've never seen anybody talk about this movie.
- 1:01:23I did look it up and I saw where there were some discussions on
- 1:01:26Reddit, but it's mostly people being like, why are people not
- 1:01:29talking about this movie? So maybe this one just needs
- 1:01:32some time to build that student. Like it's still, I mean, it's 25
- 1:01:36years old now, you know, But that's still like, I mean, 2000s
- 1:01:42movies, I think they're now having their like retro, like
- 1:01:45when we were in the 90s and 2000s, like movies from the 70s
- 1:01:48and 80s. And also like this cast is just
- 1:01:51like, again, it's studded. It is, yeah.
- 1:01:55It's a pretty great cast. It's kind of surprising to be
- 1:01:58familiar with so many actors in a movie and never have heard of
- 1:02:01it. I know, right?
- 1:02:03Yeah, man, yeah. It's a weird movie, so check it
- 1:02:06out if you can or if you want to if it sounded interesting to
- 1:02:09you, yeah. Give it a shot.
- 1:02:10Absolutely recommend. Give it a little taste.
- 1:02:12Yeah, Like Baskin-robbins little sample spoon.
- 1:02:16OK. So I believe that that does it
- 1:02:18for this month's to be or not to be.
