Speaker 3: nine three five five zero zero eight. Want to tell
2:22
Speaker 3: you about a musical event happening at West Virginia State
2:25
Speaker 3: University January the thirtieth at the Wilson Student Unions. Let's
2:29
Speaker 3: start about six here to talk about it. We've got
2:31
Speaker 3: to Madeline. Is that when I pronounced that right? Madeline say? Okay,
2:35
Speaker 3: you're on radio, so you have to say something. Okay, yes, okay,
2:38
Speaker 3: big gout, Madeline. And we also have Kylie Yes, and
2:43
Speaker 3: we have Tabby Tabby. All right, So first of all,
2:47
Speaker 3: let everybody to get to know you, introduce yourselves, tell
2:50
Speaker 3: us what you're studying at West Virginia State. How'd you
2:53
Speaker 3: get into this ill thing? Anybody can start go ahead,
2:55
Speaker 3: I think I think they're electing you, so go ahead.
2:58
Speaker 4: I'm Madeline Bailey. I am a double major. I do music,
3:02
Speaker 4: performance and communications with an emphasis in PR.
3:05
Speaker 3: Okay, So I.
3:07
Speaker 4: Started playing the flue when I was ten and I've
3:10
Speaker 4: kept with it ever since. And I chose communications and
3:14
Speaker 4: public relations because I enjoyed that aspect of it when
3:16
Speaker 4: I was in high school. And I just thought that
3:20
Speaker 4: planning this gala for the orchestra would kind of combine
3:23
Speaker 4: the two. So the three of us thought it would
3:24
Speaker 4: be a good idea, and we kind of stuck with
3:26
Speaker 4: it ever since.
3:27
Speaker 3: And that's one of the reasons why you're here, because
3:28
Speaker 3: you folks reached out to me because you want to
3:30
Speaker 3: get into the whole PR thing. And and by the way,
3:33
Speaker 3: and by the way, just I didn't plan this. I'm
3:34
Speaker 3: actually drinking out of my West Virginia State coffee mug today,
3:37
Speaker 3: oh courtesy was my good friend Eric Cage, the president
3:40
Speaker 3: out there when he was on the show one day.
3:41
Speaker 3: I was drinking out of a Marshall coffee mug. And
3:43
Speaker 3: because I'm a well I went to hol On Now
3:45
Speaker 3: I went to Marshall, okay, And so I was drinking
3:47
Speaker 3: and he said, he said, you know, you need a
3:50
Speaker 3: West Virginia State coffee mug. And the next time he
3:52
Speaker 3: came in, lo and behore. He comes in, he hands
3:54
Speaker 3: me a West Virginia State coffee boy, I suck. Yeah,
3:56
Speaker 3: so he brought gifts. You guys didn't bring anything.
3:59
Speaker 6: Right, I wrote my presence.
4:01
Speaker 3: Okay, that's presence, not with a T right. All right,
4:05
Speaker 3: you're cut off. You're not going back on again. Okay,
4:08
Speaker 3: but but but movies, and I wanted to bring up
4:11
Speaker 3: the pr aspect of it because part of what you're
4:13
Speaker 3: doing is is you need to get the word out,
4:14
Speaker 3: so you contact your folks. Contacted me and so we'd
4:16
Speaker 3: like to come on and talk about this big event. So, uh,
4:19
Speaker 3: talk about your and I'll get to the other two.
4:21
Speaker 3: I was just kidding, and talk about your your musical
4:23
Speaker 3: experience when you started playing the flute? At what age I.
4:26
Speaker 4: Started playing the flute to ten? I was blessed because
4:29
Speaker 4: my parents let me have private lessons growing up. And
4:32
Speaker 4: I always just thought the flu was a very cool instrument.
4:34
Speaker 3: Say, what was it about the flute that I don't know?
4:36
Speaker 4: It just I always loved it. I always heard it
4:39
Speaker 4: in movies and things, and you always saw people playing
4:41
Speaker 4: the flute the wrong way. Usually in movies, it's playing
4:44
Speaker 4: it the right way.
4:45
Speaker 3: They always do in movies, whether it's no matter what
4:47
Speaker 3: the instrument is, guitar or whatever. My dad was a
4:50
Speaker 3: pretty good guitarist and it would kill him watching movies
4:52
Speaker 3: when people were playing guitar and they never moved their hands,
4:55
Speaker 3: you know, they just especially on the neck of the guitar,
4:57
Speaker 3: like no, stop that, stop that. So all right, now
5:00
Speaker 3: introduce yourself.
5:01
Speaker 6: Well, my name's Kylie Hannah, and I am a little
5:05
Speaker 6: bit of an underachiever, so I'm just a communication. But
5:10
Speaker 6: I have been involved with music my entire life. I've
5:14
Speaker 6: been singing for as long as I can remember. I
5:17
Speaker 6: play a little guitar, not anything to shake a stick at.
5:21
Speaker 6: But I am a part of our school's jazz band,
5:26
Speaker 6: and our jazz band's going to be performing at our gala.
5:30
Speaker 6: And it's just a really, really amazing.
5:34
Speaker 3: Band.
5:35
Speaker 6: I mean, Scott Woodard puts it together and he absolutely
5:38
Speaker 6: rocks it. I mean, we have people who are students,
5:41
Speaker 6: we have community members, we have professionals all in this band,
5:46
Speaker 6: just like the orchestra, and it's just really an amazing
5:50
Speaker 6: opportunity for people to grow to learn to have fun,
5:54
Speaker 6: let loose a little bit, and it's just a really
5:58
Speaker 6: cool environment and I've enjoyed getting to be a part
6:00
Speaker 6: of it. So I just decided in my free time
6:05
Speaker 6: I was going to be a part of something musical
6:07
Speaker 6: on campus and.
6:08
Speaker 7: That was that.
6:09
Speaker 6: And I've been best friends with Maddie since high school.
6:11
Speaker 3: So would you guys? Where would you guys go to
6:14
Speaker 3: high school?
6:14
Speaker 6: We're both homeschooled.
6:15
Speaker 3: Actually homeschool okay, yeah, yeah, but you got to say
6:19
Speaker 3: so you went to the same room in the same house.
6:23
Speaker 6: No, no, we did this. We did the same curriculum.
6:25
Speaker 6: Not such a yeah, okay, but yeah, I love pr
6:30
Speaker 6: and so I've really really enjoyed getting to put the
6:34
Speaker 6: gala on and do a lot of the social media
6:37
Speaker 6: we have. We're posting currently on two social media sites,
6:41
Speaker 6: Facebook and Instagram, and we just are really enjoying getting
6:46
Speaker 6: to put all of it together. We've been filming interviews
6:49
Speaker 6: with all of the orchestra members and it's just been awesome.
6:52
Speaker 3: All right, and you said you were a singer. What's
6:54
Speaker 3: your favorite genre? What do you sing?
6:56
Speaker 6: I mean, I'm a little biased, but jazz, Okay, that's
6:59
Speaker 6: how I definitely love anything, Ella Fitzgerald, anything that King Cole.
7:07
Speaker 3: The classics, Yeah, the one sent to classic. I just
7:09
Speaker 3: I just got into jazz a couple of years ago.
7:11
Speaker 3: I'm a person that loves music of all kinds and
7:13
Speaker 3: I just got into jazz a couple of years ago.
7:16
Speaker 3: And my favorite is not any of those John Coltrane.
7:19
Speaker 3: I'm a huge Coltrane fan.
7:21
Speaker 8: Love.
7:21
Speaker 3: I love Coltrane, all right, and you are I'm Tabby,
7:25
Speaker 3: all right, Tabby, and tell us about you.
7:27
Speaker 9: I'm a music performance major and a communications miner.
7:31
Speaker 3: Okay.
7:32
Speaker 9: I played the trumpet. I started playing the trumpet when
7:34
Speaker 9: I was in fourth grade. And I've always loved music.
7:38
Speaker 9: So getting to put on an event like this and
7:40
Speaker 9: be in college for music it it's really it's been
7:44
Speaker 9: really fun and it's been a really good experience, and
7:47
Speaker 9: I'm excited for this gala. It's gonna be fun, all right.
7:51
Speaker 3: And I will say something about this about the communications program,
7:54
Speaker 3: uh and all of the curriculum. You know that state
7:57
Speaker 3: is amazing, but the communications program is really good. And
7:59
Speaker 3: we've had a lot of folks that have come through
8:01
Speaker 3: here that were part of that program. Hollywood. Jeff Patty,
8:04
Speaker 3: who produced this show for many years. You know, you
8:07
Speaker 3: guys know Jeff well. Jeff, of course he works on
8:10
Speaker 3: our sister station's ninety eight seven of the Mountain and
8:12
Speaker 3: also KWS on the weekends. And Jeff and I have
8:15
Speaker 3: known each other for a number of years. I hope
8:17
Speaker 3: he's not listening right, because I'm gonnaive him a compliment.
8:20
Speaker 3: Jeff's class act. He's a good dude, I was. I'm
8:24
Speaker 3: lucky to have him as a friend and as a
8:25
Speaker 3: coworker too. But don't ever tell him I said that,
8:29
Speaker 3: all right, doing, all right, let's talk about the event.
8:31
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the event. It's January the what thirtieth?
8:34
Speaker 3: January thirtieth, all right, and what are people if they
8:36
Speaker 3: come out for, what are they going to hear? What
8:38
Speaker 3: are they going to experience that night?
8:40
Speaker 4: So we are having a bunch of things. We're having
8:44
Speaker 4: live music by the jazz band. You'll hear her saying
8:46
Speaker 4: she's very modest, but she has a gorgeous voice, and
8:49
Speaker 4: she's not trained, she's she's got a gorgeous voice. So
8:52
Speaker 4: you hear her saying, we have a bunch of people singing.
8:53
Speaker 4: Our jazz band is incredible. We're going to have some
8:57
Speaker 4: orchestra groups perform. This is in celebration of the ten
9:00
Speaker 4: years of orchestra, so we're wanting to honor all the
9:03
Speaker 4: hard work that people have put in. We're going to
9:05
Speaker 4: have food for everybody and a silent auction, and we're
9:08
Speaker 4: going to have live dancing and live music and we'll
9:10
Speaker 4: have some recorded music too, and for you, we'll have
9:13
Speaker 4: a silent auction for people with a bunch of fun things.
9:16
Speaker 4: We can't let people.
9:17
Speaker 3: Know that's part of them have part of the fun.
9:19
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll have a little surprise for some people when
9:21
Speaker 4: they get there. And we just want to have a
9:23
Speaker 4: good time of people.
9:24
Speaker 3: And it says it's a masquerade ball, tell you we're
9:26
Speaker 3: doing the whole Yeah.
9:29
Speaker 6: So you can't come in unless you have a mask.
9:31
Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, and we're just one to get a mask
9:33
Speaker 3: like that.
9:34
Speaker 6: Well Amazon, you can get a mask on Amazon, phon
9:36
Speaker 6: co Bucks. I don't care what kind of mask you show.
9:39
Speaker 3: Up and hardcore about it.
9:40
Speaker 9: Right.
9:41
Speaker 10: Well, we're going to have.
9:43
Speaker 6: A photo booth like a genuine red carpet so that
9:46
Speaker 6: people can take photos. It's not going to be in vain.
9:49
Speaker 6: So you know, show up looking absolutely stellar because your
9:53
Speaker 6: photo is going to.
9:54
Speaker 3: Be taken whether you like, whether you want it or not. Right,
9:56
Speaker 3: So that's what you're saying. Where can people get tickets online?
10:00
Speaker 6: So we have we have links that are being posted
10:03
Speaker 6: on all of those social media's. We have invites being
10:06
Speaker 6: sent out on Facebook. You can register online RSVP.
10:11
Speaker 4: So yeah, we have an event on Facebook. Due to
10:14
Speaker 4: the it's combined with the WVSU Music on Facebook and
10:17
Speaker 4: the West Virginia State Orchestra on Facebook, and then the
10:21
Speaker 4: link is online through the West Vinia State Foundation.
10:25
Speaker 7: Okay, all right, it's listed as the name of the event.
10:27
Speaker 3: All right, all right, hang out with me one second.

11:01
Speaker 3: That's client with aktgmail dot com. You know, part of
11:04
Speaker 3: the show that we do, ladies, is we get text
11:06
Speaker 3: to the show and someone read a text that that
11:08
Speaker 3: somebody texted. Okay, it says kids really should get into
11:11
Speaker 3: music and marching band. Those were the best times I
11:13
Speaker 3: had in junior high. In high school football games, conference parades,
11:17
Speaker 3: field show competitions. They would be surprised at how many
11:19
Speaker 3: of their favorite celebs were band geeks, including our own
11:22
Speaker 3: Jennifer Garner, who played saxophone in the GW Patriots Marching
11:26
Speaker 3: Band and she still plays.
11:28
Speaker 6: Absolutely I totally agree. I think that marching band is
11:32
Speaker 6: a really really cool thing. Ours is kind of small,
11:36
Speaker 6: but we lead it with pride, and we really really
11:40
Speaker 6: show up for our football games. We have a pet
11:44
Speaker 6: band going on for basketball games. I think that's getting started.
11:47
Speaker 6: So we have a relatively small school, and with that
11:50
Speaker 6: comes sometimes not a whole lot of interest in certain
11:55
Speaker 6: aspects because people just don't know that it's going on,
11:58
Speaker 6: and so I think that's why as communication majors, we
12:02
Speaker 6: tend to feel a little like, oh, but there's so
12:06
Speaker 6: many things going on, how do people not know about this?
12:08
Speaker 6: And so we try to create that movement in the
12:12
Speaker 6: student body so that people know that these things are
12:15
Speaker 6: going on, because a lot of people they just don't
12:17
Speaker 6: understand that. We've got a jazz band, we have a
12:20
Speaker 6: pet band, we have a marching band, we have an orchestra,
12:23
Speaker 6: we have we had a show band there for a
12:26
Speaker 6: little bit, and I was a part of that as well,
12:28
Speaker 6: And the only difference between jazz band and show band
12:33
Speaker 6: was that show band had a real, real tall black
12:37
Speaker 6: dude in front of it. And his name is Phil
12:40
Speaker 6: Washington and he swag for days.
12:43
Speaker 3: Everybody knows Phil, Yes, and Phil Washington is he'sa A yeah.
12:48
Speaker 3: You see him on TV doing the lottery numbers all
12:50
Speaker 3: the time, and he's very, very accomplished. What do you
12:52
Speaker 3: guys hope to do? I'm gonna ask him a personal
12:54
Speaker 3: question of all three? What do you hope to do
12:55
Speaker 3: after graduation? Let's start with you. What do you what
12:57
Speaker 3: do you do? You know which we'll do after graduation.
13:00
Speaker 3: I like to go into music marketing, okay, all right,
13:02
Speaker 3: all right, what about you?
13:04
Speaker 6: Honestly I want to dabble and just about anything I
13:08
Speaker 6: can get my hands in that's communications related. So I
13:11
Speaker 6: really love broadcasting.
13:12
Speaker 3: Okay, I'm taking notes here, by the way, just so
13:15
Speaker 3: you know, because we're always looking for people.
13:17
Speaker 6: I'm a senior.
13:18
Speaker 3: All right, all right, Jeff Jenkins, if you're listening upstairs
13:22
Speaker 3: in the news department, come down and talk to this
13:23
Speaker 3: young lady or talk to all three of them. But
13:25
Speaker 3: go ahead, and I'm.
13:25
Speaker 6: Sorry, yeah, no, you're fine. I but broadcasting radio. I genuinely,
13:31
Speaker 6: really really love anything PR related. So I think it
13:34
Speaker 6: would be so fun to project manage and to put
13:39
Speaker 6: my hands into something that I can really feel good
13:41
Speaker 6: about and you know, bigger causes and stuff like that.
13:45
Speaker 3: So what about you.
13:47
Speaker 4: I am on the same lay as these too. I've
13:50
Speaker 4: looked into music marketing as well, but I love doing
13:53
Speaker 4: all of the aspects of communications. I work for sports
13:56
Speaker 4: information right now and I'm learning broadcasting and how to
14:00
Speaker 4: do the audio and journalistic aspects of it.
14:04
Speaker 3: Stephanie Poly is our producer and uh and she can
14:07
Speaker 3: help with that too, just so you know.
14:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, I enjoy all of it.
14:10
Speaker 3: But she went to marshall, is that okay?
14:13
Speaker 4: You?
14:13
Speaker 3: I guess all right, all right, what are you gonna do?
14:16
Speaker 3: I let it slide all right again? I thought I
14:19
Speaker 3: turned your microphone off. All right. So appreciate all three
14:22
Speaker 3: of you been there. Give us the dates of the
14:23
Speaker 3: concert again. We'll have you on before then, but give
14:25
Speaker 3: us dates of the big event again January thirtieth, twenty
14:29
Speaker 3: twenty six and ticket ser available on your social media. Yeah,
14:33
Speaker 3: appreciate all three of you being here. Thanks a lot,
14:35
Speaker 3: Thank you, And I'm serious. I think Jenkins is going
14:38
Speaker 3: to come down and talk to you three about about
14:39
Speaker 3: hiring today. So you may or not be at the concert.
14:42
Speaker 3: You may be working that night, just so you know.
14:44
Speaker 3: All right, all right, guys, hang out with me here
14:46
Speaker 3: just one second a day. Violand Show on five eighty

17:36
Speaker 3: How you doing man, Good morning, happy thanksgiving him. Dave
17:38
Speaker 3: backed that microphone down a little bit because I you know,
17:41
Speaker 3: a couple of those communications major we're a little soft speaking.
17:44
Speaker 3: We'll work on that, but not.
17:45
Speaker 7: You, not me, not ye spoken.
17:48
Speaker 3: He heard you, you know, coming up out of South
17:50
Speaker 3: Hills a minute ago. All right, So Small Business Saturday
17:54
Speaker 3: and listeners know my opinions on this. We should always
17:56
Speaker 3: shop small and locally when possible. But we'll get in
18:01
Speaker 3: that a little bit later on. Tony, you have been
18:03
Speaker 3: a big part of Small Business Saturday for some time.
18:06
Speaker 3: You were telling me a story on the phone yesterday
18:08
Speaker 3: twenty ten.
18:08
Speaker 7: We were the only store in West Virginia to participate
18:12
Speaker 7: in Small Business Saturday. And it's an augur year of
18:14
Speaker 7: twenty ten, and then it's slowly picked up and then
18:18
Speaker 7: it's become a big thing. Like Black Friday. We don't
18:21
Speaker 7: participate in Black Friday. We give our employees that day off,
18:24
Speaker 7: give them a today rest because from Black from Small
18:28
Speaker 7: Business Saturday until Christmas Eve, it's full throttle to.
18:31
Speaker 3: Let the roll aids kick in on the day after. Well,
18:33
Speaker 3: and let's be honest, I mean, Black Friday is not
18:35
Speaker 3: the big deal that it used to be like twenty
18:37
Speaker 3: years ago. Right, There's no.
18:41
Speaker 7: When I was Cabbage Patch kids and you know all
18:44
Speaker 7: there's different crazy toys that I bought when my kids
18:46
Speaker 7: were young. Yeah, but yeah, so there's nothing really like that,
18:50
Speaker 7: and there's no more. I mean, one hundred dollars television
18:52
Speaker 7: is like a normal price now.
18:54
Speaker 12: Yeah.
18:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, but but I mean I just remember, you know,
18:57
Speaker 3: what it used to be like. And I was always working,
19:00
Speaker 3: so I you know, doing it all on Doring in
19:02
Speaker 3: the morning show. My Black Friday was me being on
19:04
Speaker 3: the air at you know, five point thirty in the morning.
19:06
Speaker 3: But I can remember, you know, the news reports of
19:08
Speaker 3: how it used to be wild, and it's not that
19:10
Speaker 3: way anymore. But small business Saturday has just continued to
19:13
Speaker 3: get bigger and big. I had the mayor of Hurricane
19:15
Speaker 3: on the show on Monday, and then Hurricane is a
19:18
Speaker 3: very very small town. Okay, they go all out for it.
19:21
Speaker 3: I mean, you can't walk down the streets of Hurricane
19:23
Speaker 3: for their you know, eight nine businesses that they have.
19:26
Speaker 3: And of course the valley parks got stuff going on
19:28
Speaker 3: and throughout Day's valley. I know South Charleston saying everybody's
19:30
Speaker 3: got stuff a big deal.
19:32
Speaker 7: And it's the second largest volume day in the Christmas season.
19:36
Speaker 7: The biggest is always and always has been the Saturday
19:40
Speaker 7: before Christmas, no matter where it falls with Christmas. Sometimes
19:43
Speaker 7: it's Christmas Eve that still be the biggest retail day.
19:47
Speaker 7: And the Christmas season again, it's a short window this year.
19:50
Speaker 7: We only have four Saturdays to get it done this year,
19:55
Speaker 7: two years back to back, so retail sales will reflect
19:58
Speaker 7: that when they report. Then sometimes we get five weeks.
20:02
Speaker 7: Generally it depends just when Thanksgiving falls.
20:04
Speaker 3: And here's here's one of the knocks that I hear
20:08
Speaker 3: about Charleston. There's nowhere to shop.
20:12
Speaker 7: There's nowhere to those are the people who never come
20:14
Speaker 7: to Charleston. They I mean, they obviously don't on my street.
20:17
Speaker 7: I'm on a corner of Haile in Virginia. If you
20:20
Speaker 7: walk two blocks north, there's every storefront is filled and
20:24
Speaker 7: full of great little shops and restaurants. Capitol Street is
20:28
Speaker 7: not a big retail center, but there's some great eateries there.
20:30
Speaker 7: There's a couple of retail stores there. There are still
20:34
Speaker 7: a couple of stores left in the mall here. But
20:36
Speaker 7: then also you go just right up the hill there
20:39
Speaker 7: and you have Bridge Road Shopping are great specialty stores
20:42
Speaker 7: up there, fantastic. It's the way of retailing nowadays. There's
20:46
Speaker 7: a mixture of online, small shopping areas and then larger
20:50
Speaker 7: retail areas like South Ridge, which is huge. Everybody talks
20:54
Speaker 7: you know, the hold the mall in Huntington. Well, Huntington
20:56
Speaker 7: Mall wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the five times
20:59
Speaker 7: as many stores that are on out parcels and are
21:02
Speaker 7: surrounding it. It's just the way it is. People just
21:04
Speaker 7: don't shop at enclosed malls anymore.
21:06
Speaker 3: Just this fact and the interesting thing about that, to mean,
21:09
Speaker 3: we're talking to Tony the Taylor Parnzino about small business Saturday.
21:13
Speaker 3: The interesting thing about that is is that you know,
21:15
Speaker 3: you and I are roughly we Okay, no, you're a
21:17
Speaker 3: lot older than me. But but we remember the heydays
21:21
Speaker 3: of the malls, and it didn't have to be the town,
21:23
Speaker 3: so it could be any mall across America and going
21:25
Speaker 3: to the mall. Fast times at Ridgemont High, you know
21:27
Speaker 3: which the movie that changed my life by the way,
21:29
Speaker 3: Uh I was cool act Yeah, yeah, well bb Kate's
21:33
Speaker 3: pool scene. That's all I got to say about that
21:35
Speaker 3: single handedly propelled me into puberty.
21:37
Speaker 8: Uh.
21:38
Speaker 3: But but I but I will say that the days
21:40
Speaker 3: of going people still go to malls. Okay, they still do. However, Uh,
21:45
Speaker 3: the bigger we've gotten, the smaller we've gotten, because there's
21:49
Speaker 3: people that still love to go to these small shops,
21:52
Speaker 3: just like the ones you mentioned in Charleston. And you
21:54
Speaker 3: do incredible business down there, but you're still considered small
21:57
Speaker 3: business obviously, but you but you're one though, and there
22:00
Speaker 3: are several others that have kind of bridged that gap
22:03
Speaker 3: between Okay, you can still come in and just look around,
22:06
Speaker 3: but you also do things online. You also do things
22:10
Speaker 3: you can do trunk shows and things of that nature.
22:12
Speaker 3: So I think the successful business in twenties twenty five
22:15
Speaker 3: Tony had about to be twenty twenty six has got
22:17
Speaker 3: to kind of be a marriage of all of them.
22:19
Speaker 7: You have to be omni channel if you're in retail,
22:21
Speaker 7: no matter what size, I'm small to large. If you
22:23
Speaker 7: have no Internet presence, you're not in business. We have
22:27
Speaker 7: a very robust online store and ship all over the
22:30
Speaker 7: country eight or nine packages a day. We're one of
22:35
Speaker 7: the larger, probably single store online retailers in the country
22:39
Speaker 7: for men's clothing. I sold three Oxford suits online ship
22:43
Speaker 7: to Massachusetts. One went to Pennsylvania.
22:45
Speaker 3: And these are people that people you need to realize.
22:47
Speaker 3: These are people that in many cases don't have any
22:49
Speaker 3: ties to this area. They're not from Charleston and said, well,
22:52
Speaker 3: I still want to shop with Tony or whatever. The
22:54
Speaker 3: people that just did the the Google machine search engine
22:57
Speaker 3: and found you, you know.
22:58
Speaker 7: And what's amusing to me sometimes is I recognize some
23:00
Speaker 7: of the names I'm sending to. Uh, there'll be celebrities,
23:04
Speaker 7: there'll be business type I mean other than me, other
23:06
Speaker 7: than well, yeah, well you you walk in the store.
23:09
Speaker 3: Okay, that's truely true with your entourage. But yeah, yeah,
23:12
Speaker 3: but so.
23:13
Speaker 7: It's just fascinating to me. But that's that's the way
23:15
Speaker 7: it is, and it's it's fun and it keeps us going.
23:18
Speaker 7: I mean, it really does. But again, it used to
23:21
Speaker 7: be more than our own, than our in store business,
23:24
Speaker 7: and now our in store business has surpass because Charleston again,
23:28
Speaker 7: people are coming here. We have to collect your data.
23:31
Speaker 7: I have people moving here all the time, and these
23:33
Speaker 7: are the people you want moving here, professionals and it's
23:36
Speaker 7: fantastic and people can say no. But the housing situation
23:40
Speaker 7: reflects that there's a shortage of houses. There's a reason
23:43
Speaker 7: there's a shortage of house. Yeah, and people are moving here.
23:46
Speaker 7: And it's not just Charleston. I mean it goes on
23:47
Speaker 7: down through the valley. Well, the whole thing is Charleston. Yeah, people,
23:51
Speaker 7: this border thing, you're going across the board, you know,
23:53
Speaker 7: I mean Charleston has forty eight thousand people. Then you
23:56
Speaker 7: cross over the river and you got another thirty thousand
23:58
Speaker 7: added to they're really are trading area is about six
24:02
Speaker 7: hundred and fifty thousand people. Is our trading right now,
24:05
Speaker 7: which is the Metro Valley and Logan we go to Pikeville.
24:09
Speaker 7: That's that's pretty much. If you're in retail, that's you're trading, right.
24:11
Speaker 3: We talked to Tony the Taylor appearing Zino about small
24:15
Speaker 3: Business Saturday to Dave Allen showing five a d Live
24:17
Speaker 3: broad to you part by Live Healthy West Virginia presented
24:19
Speaker 3: by WVU Madison, a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles. Check avalate
24:23
Speaker 3: this episode's wv Metronews dot com under the podcast menu.
24:26
Speaker 3: So what small Business Saturday look like for Tony the Taylor.
24:29
Speaker 7: We have great promotions again. Quarter zips are hot. That's
24:32
Speaker 7: the hot item. That's the that's the cabbage patch kid
24:35
Speaker 7: apparently of Christmas twenty twenty.
24:37
Speaker 3: But you're not gonna get a kidney injured trying to
24:39
Speaker 3: find one.
24:41
Speaker 7: We're doing a buy one, get one free on all
24:43
Speaker 7: sweaters that day in store only on that but we
24:46
Speaker 7: have outerwear at half price. We have great selection of shoes,
24:49
Speaker 7: got a special selection of Johnson and Murphy's that are
24:51
Speaker 7: seventy nine ninety nine for a dress roof, you need
24:54
Speaker 7: a nice banner black dress, jew some other great deals
24:59
Speaker 7: going on. You can check our website at Bestmaster Taylor
25:01
Speaker 7: dot com for that and then we're ready to go.
25:05
Speaker 7: Don't forget to come downtown for Holly Jolly Bray on
25:08
Speaker 7: Friday of Art Walk. We are not open for this,
25:10
Speaker 7: but so I can go out and actually enjoy it.
25:13
Speaker 7: Some great events we have the Holiday Shopping Village going
25:17
Speaker 7: on Slack Plaza, and you know, don't forget to stop
25:21
Speaker 7: in my buddy at Sam's Uptown for a nice great
25:23
Speaker 7: meal and a cocktail and walk around pod. It will
25:26
Speaker 7: be an effect and it would be a great time.
25:28
Speaker 3: And again, you know, I had you on to talk
25:31
Speaker 3: about your business because you're, you know, kind of up
25:32
Speaker 3: sponsored this show, but I also wanted you to hit
25:35
Speaker 3: on the other businesses, which you've done, because it's not
25:37
Speaker 3: just it's not just the Tony the Taylor Show. I
25:39
Speaker 3: mean everybody else is everybody. Everybody's taking part of it.
25:43
Speaker 3: And again, that vibrant downtown and I think people kind
25:46
Speaker 3: of you know, and Holly Jolly Bray has been such
25:48
Speaker 3: a big part of that over the last you know,
25:50
Speaker 3: the last holiday seas.
25:51
Speaker 7: I have to tell you Kevin Madison and Morgan Morrison
25:53
Speaker 7: they work their tails off year round for this event
25:58
Speaker 7: and every year they make it better and better and better.
26:00
Speaker 7: And I'm pumped for the drone show that last year
26:03
Speaker 7: was good, this year it's going to be spectacular.
26:05
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, we had a text here for you and
26:07
Speaker 3: that says, uh, how do you know measurements are accurate
26:10
Speaker 3: if you're going by what someone posts on an online order.
26:14
Speaker 7: Well, most things we sell online are belts, shoes, sports wear.
26:20
Speaker 7: Very rarely we get things that we were don't do
26:23
Speaker 7: anything custom made online except for belts. We have custom
26:25
Speaker 7: belts online and we call them and that's the way
26:29
Speaker 7: it is, or I will go visit them. Most we
26:31
Speaker 7: don't really sell custom shirts online or that's it's impossible
26:35
Speaker 7: to do accurately.
26:38
Speaker 3: Well, And the great thing I think about about your
26:40
Speaker 3: store is is people can go in there and they
26:45
Speaker 3: can shop and not you know, you guys are experts.
26:48
Speaker 3: You and Ryan, you know you do a great job.
26:50
Speaker 3: And you go in and you know, okay, I gotta
26:53
Speaker 3: I got a formal event coming up. Help me. And
26:56
Speaker 3: I know I've hung out at your store enough to
26:59
Speaker 3: know that that you get a lot of that people
27:01
Speaker 3: coming in or put somebody bringing a kid in for
27:03
Speaker 3: a Christmas formal or something like that, and and and
27:06
Speaker 3: they don't know. What they don't know is that they.
27:07
Speaker 7: Don't even weddings. You know, we do three or four
27:10
Speaker 7: weddings weekend, which which is a huge business. We're probably
27:14
Speaker 7: the largest tuxied to rental place in the thing. Well
27:17
Speaker 7: we're cheaper than everybody else and we do it better
27:19
Speaker 7: than everybody else. So it's it's uh, you know, it's
27:23
Speaker 7: just fun. And we interview you first. We just want
27:26
Speaker 7: to give you something. We want to make sure you
27:27
Speaker 7: look good and feel good when you leave. And AM
27:29
Speaker 7: sure event that's important, look good and feel good.
27:33
Speaker 3: Now you're a Charleston guy, I mean, born, born in bred,
27:36
Speaker 3: and like what I always said, you're born and bred.
27:38
Speaker 3: When you die, you'll be Charleston dead. But uh, talk
27:42
Speaker 3: about people always want to look back on any town
27:45
Speaker 3: Tony and they all want to say, well this I
27:47
Speaker 3: remember how it how it used to be, and that's okay.
27:50
Speaker 3: People have a tendency to look back through rose colored
27:53
Speaker 3: glasses sometimes, you know, and it's not always like It's
27:55
Speaker 3: like with music. You know, all the music of the
27:57
Speaker 3: eighties was the best of all. It really was. It
28:00
Speaker 3: really was. I mean, but we look about it and
28:02
Speaker 3: you know, but but talk about what it was like
28:05
Speaker 3: and there's still a lot of positive things going on,
28:07
Speaker 3: But talk about growing up in Charleston East End kid
28:09
Speaker 3: and what Charleston was like. And my point is not
28:13
Speaker 3: to say it was better then than it is now.
28:15
Speaker 3: I'm just saying it's just different.
28:17
Speaker 7: It's just different. It's just the way it is. I
28:18
Speaker 7: mean again, And my dad started the store in nineteen
28:22
Speaker 7: seventy four and I had to go to work. I
28:24
Speaker 7: was nine years old, and downtown was thriving. It was busy,
28:28
Speaker 7: and it's where everything wasn't Its like every downtown in
28:30
Speaker 7: America was like that. And then the mall was built,
28:33
Speaker 7: and Charleston was kind of on the forefront of building
28:36
Speaker 7: the mall downtown rather than out in the outskirts, which
28:39
Speaker 7: sucked down life out of downtown. Well, this mall did
28:42
Speaker 7: suck the life out of downtown just four or five
28:45
Speaker 7: blocks away. However, it we stayed downtown because we're downtown.
28:51
Speaker 7: Store men don't go to shopping malls. And we thrived
28:55
Speaker 7: and thrived and grew and grew and grew, and then
28:58
Speaker 7: investment came downtown professionals building these buildings rehaving them, which
29:03
Speaker 7: puts people down there. And then what happens. Restaurants open
29:07
Speaker 7: up and service stores open up and it's just a
29:10
Speaker 7: part of retailing. Then mall started to decline in the
29:13
Speaker 7: late nineties. It's just the reality of it all over America,
29:17
Speaker 7: not just in Charleston. And then strips shopping centers started
29:21
Speaker 7: opening up on the outskirts. If you go to Columbus,
29:24
Speaker 7: you're right, Oh, I go to go to Easton and
29:26
Speaker 7: go to Columbus. That's not an indoor mall. It's an
29:28
Speaker 7: outdoor mall. And the people who owned the Town Center
29:32
Speaker 7: when they sold their portfolio, except for the Town Center
29:35
Speaker 7: because it was heavily in debt. The group of the
29:37
Speaker 7: Australian Big Mall group, every mall they bought of the
29:40
Speaker 7: twenty four that twenty five malls of twenty four they bought,
29:43
Speaker 7: they tore them all down and turned them into outdoor
29:46
Speaker 7: shopping many downtowns basically, And that's just the way it is.
29:50
Speaker 7: It's all over the country. The Internet really, you know,
29:54
Speaker 7: I might have hurt malls a little bit. However, what
29:58
Speaker 7: we see now is people will shop on our store
30:03
Speaker 7: locally on the internet and then come and pick it
30:05
Speaker 7: up in the store and then augment their purchase and
30:09
Speaker 7: a lot of a lot of larger retailers are seeing
30:12
Speaker 7: that if you're paying attention and reading like the Wall
30:14
Speaker 7: Street Journal about retailing and well, and.
30:16
Speaker 3: You're a person that is never shy to give opinions.
30:19
Speaker 3: So I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you your opinion of
30:22
Speaker 3: the town Center, the current State town Center.
30:26
Speaker 7: It is sad to me what the other way it
30:30
Speaker 7: will ever work. It just needs to be leveled and
30:32
Speaker 7: rebuilt into an entertainment and arts district. You're right beside
30:36
Speaker 7: one hundred million dollar facility. You need restaurants, you need
30:41
Speaker 7: entertainment style stores. That's the only way I work. People
30:45
Speaker 7: who want to buy and have all these ideas, they're
30:47
Speaker 7: just clueless to retail. They have zero idea what they're
30:50
Speaker 7: doing we're thinking about. I like people who think about it,
30:52
Speaker 7: but again their ideas are just shot.
30:56
Speaker 3: Well. I mean, it was originally, you know, and this
30:59
Speaker 3: has gone back and forth. We've had a commissioner Silango
31:01
Speaker 3: and the mayor and others on to talk about this
31:03
Speaker 3: that originally we talked about taking the town Center and
31:06
Speaker 3: you know, making it into an aquatic center, and then
31:09
Speaker 3: the funding you know, kind of went away. And that's
31:12
Speaker 3: still it's still got something's still going to happen. Uh there,
31:14
Speaker 3: But you got to understand that that mall is owned
31:17
Speaker 3: by a private company as it stands right now, and
31:20
Speaker 3: that private company, as long as they're paying their taxes
31:24
Speaker 3: and as long as they're not, there's no you know,
31:26
Speaker 3: there's not any major issues there. Not really a lot
31:29
Speaker 3: of people can do. I don't understand their business model.
31:31
Speaker 3: They've done this in other places. The whole group is
31:33
Speaker 3: purchased malls and and let them and just let them decline.
31:36
Speaker 3: That's what they do for tax reasons. I suppose. I
31:38
Speaker 3: don't know, and I say that to say I agree
31:42
Speaker 3: with you one hundred percent. I am a supporter of
31:44
Speaker 3: something for that mall. That's not I mean. And to
31:46
Speaker 3: these people that say, Tony, well, if we just put
31:48
Speaker 3: a blank in there, it was David Busters. Uh you know,
31:51
Speaker 3: God Blest, one of my former producers. If they just
31:53
Speaker 3: put a David Busters, they saved them all. If we
31:55
Speaker 3: just put a you know whatever, No, not one store
31:58
Speaker 3: is not going to save them all. It's not about
32:00
Speaker 3: it needs to be an entire, an entire entertainment complex.
32:04
Speaker 3: What needs to be leveled. Okay, but when you have
32:07
Speaker 3: these people that come in for these big events like
32:09
Speaker 3: at it, Shiney and whatever. They may play a game
32:13
Speaker 3: at six o'clock on a Friday night and not play
32:16
Speaker 3: another one till one o'clock on Sunday. What are they
32:18
Speaker 3: gonna do. They're not gonna sit in a hotel room.
32:19
Speaker 3: They got to have something. Come down to Tony the
32:21
Speaker 3: Taylor we do. We get tons, exactly tons of direct
32:25
Speaker 3: business from these soccer tournaments and softball tournaments in these
32:29
Speaker 3: large youth sports. If I may talk about the sports
32:32
Speaker 3: complex real quick, we're we're just waiting on a federal funding.
32:35
Speaker 3: We are waiting Shelley Moore and at the time Senator Mansion.
32:39
Speaker 3: We have an ear mark, and these guys in Washington
32:41
Speaker 3: can't get their stuff together and to get a budget done.
32:45
Speaker 3: And when it's done, the earmark will pop up and
32:47
Speaker 3: we will get it and then we can finish. We've
32:49
Speaker 3: done our part. The city of Charleston in the county
32:51
Speaker 3: has done their part, and we're just waiting for your
32:54
Speaker 3: congress people who are douless to do their part and
32:59
Speaker 3: that and then we'll move forward. These things just aren't
33:02
Speaker 3: built overnight. In the Aquatic Center, there's a reason they're
33:08
Speaker 3: all nonprofit because they are abhorribly expensive and the maintenance
33:11
Speaker 3: on them is out of control.
33:12
Speaker 7: I can see that, and every private one has obviously.
33:15
Speaker 7: I mean, just just do a little reading and research.
33:20
Speaker 7: There's money pits because again they're dealing with water. I
33:22
Speaker 7: think it'd be great, but who's going to pay for it?
33:24
Speaker 7: Are you willing to pay? Are you willing to pay
33:27
Speaker 7: more taxes to have that? And nobody is they're not.
33:32
Speaker 3: He's never shied with opinions. That's one of the reason
33:34
Speaker 3: why you and I get along so well. I think,
33:36
Speaker 3: all right, tell us, let's recap the small business Saturday again.
33:39
Speaker 3: Your business is going to be closed tomorrow and Friday.
33:42
Speaker 3: You'll open up on Saturday. But there's a lot of
33:43
Speaker 3: activities going on downtown. Just final forty five seconds, forty

34:10
Speaker 7: and I appreciate you having me on here day.
34:12
Speaker 3: So what you're saying is you're going to suck more
34:15
Speaker 3: of my money out of my pocket?
34:17
Speaker 7: Right, Actually stopped by payroll and there's four year check
34:20
Speaker 7: to me.
34:22
Speaker 3: Well you know you all right, I appreciate it. Text
34:28
Speaker 3: says Weight. You both said people are coming here to shop,
34:30
Speaker 3: but we can't support them all.
34:32
Speaker 7: Correct because stores don't are especially stores don't located in malls.
34:37
Speaker 7: That's right.
34:39
Speaker 3: But your business is good, that's huge.
34:41

Speaker 3: they do, and we appreciate that Tony was talking about
38:05

38:41
Speaker 3: I'm going to say within two hundred miles of Charleston,

38:54

38:55

39:30
Speaker 3: but give those who may not know who you are.
39:32
Speaker 3: Give us your background.
39:33
Speaker 15: Sure, born and raised in Charleston. Grew up, I guess
39:36
Speaker 15: the first in South Charleston, then the West side, and
39:39
Speaker 15: then I'm an Eastern Connall County product. Roots duke, last
39:42
Speaker 15: class of DuPont High School. We shut it down.
39:45
Speaker 3: Okay, they said, we're done afteress.
39:47
Speaker 10: That's it.
39:48
Speaker 15: So yeah, So I've my roots are in Charleston. We
39:51
Speaker 15: came back in two thousand and nine. My wife is
39:53
Speaker 15: from Pittsburgh and she came back with you. We had
39:55
Speaker 15: our son here. Worked at the Charleston Daily Mel then
39:58
Speaker 15: when the Gazette and Daily Mail emerged, was the sports
40:02
Speaker 15: editor there, and then spent my last ten years in
40:05
Speaker 15: collegiate athletics, first at Marshall University and for the past
40:08
Speaker 15: fifteen months at the Mountain East Conference. So I've been
40:10
Speaker 15: at the Division one, Division two level of college athletics,
40:12
Speaker 15: so very non linear journey here. But I'm back to
40:16
Speaker 15: you know, back home, you know. And I grew up
40:19
Speaker 15: running around Plaza East and going to Capital Market when
40:23
Speaker 15: it was still a recycling facility, like you know, so
40:26
Speaker 15: you know, I understand the history there and the tradition
40:29
Speaker 15: and the nostalgia that comes with it. And when I
40:31
Speaker 15: saw it, you know, I just I went after it
40:34
Speaker 15: with gusto.
40:34
Speaker 3: What was it that made that made it appealing to you?
40:37
Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean the the the you know, we we
40:40
Speaker 15: took my son there when he was you know, when
40:43
Speaker 15: he was a toddler. And you know, I think, you know,
40:48
Speaker 15: convincing people that I'm not just a sports guy was
40:50
Speaker 15: a thing that I was at least concerned about. The
40:53
Speaker 15: the hiring committee seemed less concerned about it as I
40:56
Speaker 15: went through. But you know, I'm a music guy, I'm
40:59
Speaker 15: an arts guy. I love museums, I love food. You know,
41:03
Speaker 15: my interests are varied. And you know, Capital Market for
41:06
Speaker 15: us was you know, uh, you know, a cornerstone of
41:09
Speaker 15: Charleston and it's where we took you know, out of town,
41:11
Speaker 15: visited outse That's where we you know, it's it's what
41:14
Speaker 15: we wanted when we wanted to showcase Charleston, what we
41:16
Speaker 15: were about.
41:16
Speaker 3: That's where we went. I was going to say, because
41:18
Speaker 3: whenever people come to Charleston, my experience has been and
41:21
Speaker 3: my wife's company would say the same thing. When they
41:23
Speaker 3: came to Charleston, they'd say, well, you know, we have
41:26
Speaker 3: time in the evening, where do we need to go?
41:27
Speaker 3: That was always number one. You got to go to
41:29
Speaker 3: Capitol Market one hundred percent.
41:30
Speaker 15: So there's established brand there and I have an appreciation
41:34
Speaker 15: for that nostalgia, the memories that people make, you know,
41:37
Speaker 15: sorting through through pictures, I can see my son with pumpkins.
41:40
Speaker 15: We went there and picked out our Christmas trees. You know,
41:43
Speaker 15: when we lived in South Hills in Charleston, it was
41:45
Speaker 15: always a big thing for me to have the hanging flowers,
41:48
Speaker 15: you know, So my wife and I would go and
41:50
Speaker 15: pick out the flowers, and you know, we'd go into
41:53
Speaker 15: inside the Capital Market. We were there for an event
41:55
Speaker 15: a few weeks ago, and my son wanted to go
41:56
Speaker 15: in and get something from the sushi garden, you know,
41:59
Speaker 15: so like it's just it has everything, and it's everything
42:03
Speaker 15: that I want Charleston to be and so to kind
42:06
Speaker 15: of be a caretaker of it, like it's a really
42:08
Speaker 15: big deal to me.
42:09
Speaker 3: What is your vision for Capitol Market?
42:10
Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean we want to grow.
42:12
Speaker 3: There's challenges there.
42:14
Speaker 15: There's built in challenges as far as it being kind
42:16
Speaker 15: of landlocked on all four sides with parking lots or
42:20
Speaker 15: Smith Street. But we want to grow, find ways to grow,
42:23
Speaker 15: find ways to engage the community more and create that
42:28
Speaker 15: next generation of people who care about the market. You know,
42:31
Speaker 15: that's you know, my son's thirteen years old, so I
42:34
Speaker 15: want him to grow up and have children and that's
42:37
Speaker 15: their destination on the weekends or the evenings or whatever.
42:41
Speaker 15: So I want it to be a really family friendly
42:43
Speaker 15: place and you know, a place where everybody goes like
42:46
Speaker 15: you're saying, and kind of be that that gem of Charleston.
42:50
Speaker 3: Can you hang out with me here one second? Yeah,
42:52
Speaker 3: because here's a shocker. We went a little bit long
42:54
Speaker 3: with Tony the Taylor. That's fine, imagine that Tony's worth it. No,
42:57
Speaker 3: he's not all right. I want to take a break.

Speaker 3: Ley Pickley Weekly Hotline three zero four three four five
45:20
Speaker 3: fifty eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor Text three zero
45:23
Speaker 3: four nine three five five zero zero, and I knew
45:25
Speaker 3: that Tony would be listening. We had a question about
45:27
Speaker 3: how many men shops were there in a two hundred
45:29
Speaker 3: miles radius that he says independent stores within a two
45:32
Speaker 3: hundred mile radius about nine. I was a little high
45:34
Speaker 3: on that, so they're about nine or so within a
45:37
Speaker 3: two hundred mile radius. Chuck McGill is here, the new
45:40
Speaker 3: director of Capital Market. So we're getting into Thanksgiving and Christmas.
45:44
Speaker 3: Always a big time at the Capitol Markets. Give us
45:47
Speaker 3: an idea of some things that are playing for holidays.
45:49
Speaker 15: Sure, yeah, I'm coming in at the right time. The
45:51
Speaker 15: bur months are.
45:52
Speaker 3: Right or the wrong time, No, I want to look
45:54
Speaker 3: at it.
45:54
Speaker 15: That's always my favorite time of the year. So I'm
45:57
Speaker 15: an October baby, So I'm a fall guy. I'm a
45:59
Speaker 15: winner guy. But we have the Feasts of the Seven Fishes.
46:02
Speaker 15: My first day is Monday, and we have an event
46:05
Speaker 15: that night that's already sold out, Feasts of the Seven Fishes.
46:08
Speaker 15: That's a that's a huge deal. And then on the
46:11
Speaker 15: tenth is the Market Mingle, the Merry Market Mingle, So
46:14
Speaker 15: that's the next big thing. You can go on Capitol
46:16
Speaker 15: Market dot net and get tickets stills for that one.
46:18
Speaker 15: So those are our big events, and then you know
46:21
Speaker 15: we're just getting you know, getting the market all festive.
46:24
Speaker 15: I mean there's there's been people painting windows, and the
46:27
Speaker 15: Christmas trees are there, and there's you know, lights everywhere,
46:30
Speaker 15: and of course, uh you know we're gonna go judge
46:33
Speaker 15: Christmas trees after this, you know at Holly Jolly Braley.
46:36
Speaker 15: So we're involved with that and it's just a really
46:39
Speaker 15: exciting time to you know, dive in with with two feet.
46:42
Speaker 3: And you talk about and this is what Tony and
46:44
Speaker 3: I we're talking about a little earlier about Charleston really
46:47
Speaker 3: becoming a holiday Christmas destination. I mean between Holly Jolly
46:53
Speaker 3: Brawley and the Light the night and just everything else
46:58
Speaker 3: through the largest Christmas parade around that'll be next week,
47:01
Speaker 3: and what's going on at Capital Market, and just I
47:04
Speaker 3: mean there's so many things going on in Charleston at
47:07
Speaker 3: one time. For Christmas.
47:08
Speaker 15: Yeah, I got my market email set up and the calendar. Candice,
47:13
Speaker 15: the director of Market and Communications at the Capital Market,
47:16
Speaker 15: started adding things to my calendar and I was like
47:18
Speaker 15: flipping through and I was like, Okay, this event's that night,
47:20
Speaker 15: this of the parades, this night the market mingles, this night,
47:24
Speaker 15: it's loaded. And I think that speaks well of Charleston
47:27
Speaker 15: that there's always something going on and the synergy that
47:30
Speaker 15: the market has with downtown and you know, there's there's
47:33
Speaker 15: your trolley's going around taking you from place to place,
47:36
Speaker 15: and there's vendors and there's music, and there's something to
47:40
Speaker 15: do every night, you know, this weekend with the tree
47:42
Speaker 15: lighting ceremony. So I think it's really cool the vibe
47:45
Speaker 15: and the momentum that Charleston has, especially around the holidays.
47:47
Speaker 3: Talking to Chuck mcgild again, who is the new director
47:50
Speaker 3: of a Capital Market, I want to throw this in here,
47:52
Speaker 3: this little promotion that we're going to be doing starting
47:54
Speaker 3: next week. You can save up to sixty percent off.
47:58
Speaker 3: This is wv Bargains won't be caught. Save up to
48:00
Speaker 3: sixty percent off on items like certificates to Eddie's Tyron Service,
48:02
Speaker 3: pest control services from Spotlight Pest Control, gas fireplaces from Fireside,
48:07
Speaker 3: and patio tent rentals from Quantum, sixty percent off car
48:10
Speaker 3: detailing services from Oak Citiado, Spa, jewelry certificates from pettit
48:13
Speaker 3: jwelry tax services from Penny Pincher, certificates to Dunbar Furniture,
48:16
Speaker 3: and more items all across the valley and across the state,
48:19
Speaker 3: really across state lines too in our surrounding states where
48:23
Speaker 3: we have WVRC media properties. And again it's going to
48:26
Speaker 3: kick off next Monday. It'll run through the fifth wv
48:28
Speaker 3: Bargains dot Com. Wv Bargains is a WVRC media promotion,
48:32
Speaker 3: all right. So we talked about some of the struggles
48:35
Speaker 3: of capital market, mainly not of your own doing but
48:38
Speaker 3: or the market's under end, but just because you are
48:40
Speaker 3: kind of landlocked there. But on your wish list and
48:43
Speaker 3: I'm not saying these are going to be promises from
48:45
Speaker 3: Chuck McGill, okay, but on your wish list, what would
48:49
Speaker 3: you like to see?
48:50
Speaker 15: I think I've been really encouraged. So I've been in
48:53
Speaker 15: Huntington for nine years, but we've come back all the
48:55
Speaker 15: time because Charleston is my home. My mom and dad
48:57
Speaker 15: are here, my aunts and uncles are here, cousins are here,
49:00
Speaker 15: and what I've seen from the downtown and how you know,
49:04
Speaker 15: a rising tide lists all boats situation, so you get
49:07
Speaker 15: five Street and then you get short Story for example.
49:10
Speaker 15: I think having the area around the market also lifted
49:15
Speaker 15: up would benefit the market. Yeah, so I think that's
49:17
Speaker 15: a very long term, ambitious goal. But with the ballpark
49:21
Speaker 15: there and the light the night and all that brings
49:24
Speaker 15: and kind of the the natural flow to the market,
49:28
Speaker 15: if if, if the area around the market was also enhanced,
49:32
Speaker 15: I think that would benefit the market a lot. With
49:34
Speaker 15: its proximity to the interstate and the you know, the
49:37
Speaker 15: interchanges there and the easy on and off. I would
49:40
Speaker 15: love to see that area kind of lifted up, like
49:43
Speaker 15: the downtown's been listed lifted up. But that's a you know,
49:45
Speaker 15: very long way. It's outside of my control exactly exactly.
49:48
Speaker 3: But that's that's why we call it a wish list. Yeah,
49:50
Speaker 3: you know, absolutely, And you're talking about being in Huntington,
49:53
Speaker 3: I think it's amazing what they have done with Pullman
49:55
Speaker 3: Square in Huntington because I was a student at Marshall
49:57
Speaker 3: in the early nineteen nineties and we all remember or
50:00
Speaker 3: the super Block. We've been talked about going back to
50:02
Speaker 3: the eighties. They're gonna build this big thing down and
50:04
Speaker 3: it was just promise after promise, broke it and then
50:07
Speaker 3: lo and behold, one day Pullman Square pops up and
50:09
Speaker 3: it has totally revitalized that area absolutely, And that's a
50:13
Speaker 3: great blueprint for us to follow. And I've watched that,
50:16
Speaker 3: you know, I went to Huntington in twenty sixteen and
50:18
Speaker 3: was able to watch that kind of evolve over the years.
50:21
Speaker 3: So that's that's, you know, in in game, that would
50:24
Speaker 3: be my top goal. All right, well, Chuck, I appreciate
50:28
Speaker 3: you stopping by the show, and I know you're going
50:30
Speaker 3: to do great things over there. You've got a great
50:32
Speaker 3: marketing director and Candaice, but you also got a great
50:34
Speaker 3: board of directors over there. Big shout out to my
50:36
Speaker 3: man Steve Keith and then he gu us over there.
50:38
Speaker 3: So we'll let you get out of here and let
50:39
Speaker 3: you go downtown and judge from Christmas trees and we'll
50:42
Speaker 3: have you on a few more times between now and Christmas,
50:44
Speaker 3: and of course you're always welcome here throughout not the year.
50:46
Speaker 3: Appreciate you man. All right, thank you, Dave, all right,
50:48
Speaker 3: thanks a lot. We're gonna transition over talking to my
50:50
Speaker 3: man TJ. Meadows coming up in talk line at the top.
50:53
Speaker 3: Hang out with me just once. Can you give me
50:55
Speaker 3: like two or three minutes because I need to talk
50:56
Speaker 3: to you a little bit. Okay, but I'm gonna turn
50:58
Speaker 3: your microphone off now. How's that all right? DJ Meadows
51:02
Speaker 3: is here? What you got on talking? It's the after show, buddy,
51:04
Speaker 3: that's what you stayed around for, the after show, the
51:07
Speaker 3: after party.
51:09
Speaker 16: A ten oh six E. Gordon Ghee joins us today.
51:12
Speaker 16: You know, doctor Gee penned another commentary that was in
51:15
Speaker 16: the Hill talking about college athletics.
51:17
Speaker 3: He's been talking more.
51:19
Speaker 16: Now that he's not a president, which I really enjoy.
51:22
Speaker 3: So we're gonna get into that with Gordon.
51:23
Speaker 16: We'll probably talk Thanksgiving in a host of other things
51:26
Speaker 16: as well with him. Bridget Lambert of the West Virginia
51:28
Speaker 16: Retailers Association on Black Friday joins us at ten thirty.
51:31
Speaker 16: Hobby's in at eleven six. He's got issues with what
51:34
Speaker 16: the CDC has done about Vaccine Mornings courtesy of Robert
51:38
Speaker 16: Kennedy Junior. So we'll talk about that and I'm sure
51:42
Speaker 16: other you know, top like, there's nothing to talk about now,
51:45
Speaker 16: there's nothing going on that Hobby would want to opine about.
51:48
Speaker 16: My buddy Mike McKenna has a great piece out. He's
51:51
Speaker 16: a columnist for the Washington Times talking about Thanksgiving. We'll
51:55
Speaker 16: speak with him on that. I want to pick his
51:57
Speaker 16: brain on a few things Trump. You know, he used
51:59
Speaker 16: to be he was in the Trump administration during the
52:01
Speaker 16: first term, and so he's got that unique perspective as well.
52:05
Speaker 16: I want to talk about about tariffs, I want to
52:07
Speaker 16: talk about going after Comy and several other things with
52:12
Speaker 16: Mike as well.
52:12
Speaker 3: All right now, Programming note, there will be no local
52:15
Speaker 3: show of mine tomorrow and Friday. I'll be back on Monday,
52:18
Speaker 3: but Metro News Midday is coming up later today. We'll
52:20
Speaker 3: have a best of Metro News Midday tomorrow and then
52:22
Speaker 3: a live show on Friday. No Amanda Baron on Friday
52:25
Speaker 3: for Metro News Midday. I will be here. Speedy Bevans
52:28
Speaker 3: Broadcasting Legend will be my guest.
52:31
Speaker 16: Yeah.
52:31
Speaker 3: Pretty cool, pretty cool. I might to stick around and
52:33
Speaker 3: just listen to a well come on in, come on in, man.
52:36
Speaker 3: All right, we gotta go. I'll see you later today
52:38
Speaker 3: on Metro News Midday. Until later I had to thank
52:42
Speaker 3: for a minute. I have fun and love somebody.
