- 0:00Hi, everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17All right, welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Happy Monday. I'm going to get right into the
- 0:21stories because I have a lot to cover.
- 0:24The first story that I have for you guys is we need to talk
- 0:27about Hallie Kate's Hamptons house.
- 0:30People are losing their minds over the fact that this Tik
- 0:34toker bought a house in the Hamptons and there is just so
- 0:38much going on. I wasn't even going to cover
- 0:40this. It happened last week, but it
- 0:42has exploded even more. I'll get into that in a minute.
- 0:45But yes, anyways, I'm going to cover it now because there is a
- 0:47lot to be discussed. So last week, New York City Tik
- 0:51Toker Hallie Kate revealed that she bought a house in the
- 0:53Hamptons and she also bought a Land Rover on the same day so
- 0:57she could drive from New York City to the Hamptons.
- 0:59Hallie has been making content on TikTok since 2020.
- 1:02So four years and just part of that kind of New York City
- 1:05lifestyle influencer group with like Kit Keenan and all those
- 1:08girls. She has 1.2 million followers on
- 1:11TikTok and she is 23 years old. OK, so why is this a story?
- 1:16So people immediately lost their minds when they saw that she
- 1:22bought this house. I have a few ideas as to why
- 1:25that happened, but the reason why I wanted to talk about this
- 1:29today is because now she is basically being doxed.
- 1:33So people have found her house listing, I understand like how
- 1:37stuff that's public record, but they found it, they're posting
- 1:40it, they're posting her address, they're posting you know how
- 1:42much she paid for it. And then she shared something
- 1:46over the weekend. So she shared a screenshot on
- 1:48her stories and I did not see this.
- 1:49So grain of salt. I just kind of, I'm reporting on
- 1:52what I've seen people talk about.
- 1:53So she allegedly put this screenshot on her stories of a
- 1:56text message that she received from someone saying like, girl,
- 1:59be careful how much you share online about your house.
- 2:02Like people can find your address or like whatever.
- 2:04People are scary, you know, like warning her.
- 2:06OK, so she put this on her story and she put a screenshot of it
- 2:10and you could see, I guess like in the text message, that it was
- 2:13like a phone number and not someone's name.
- 2:15Anyways, a random person, a random stranger found her phone
- 2:19number online on the Internet and texted her this.
- 2:24They found information about her online and then texted her to
- 2:27say be careful about what people can find about you online.
- 2:31That is so scary. Like imagine being a young woman
- 2:35whose job is to put yourself online.
- 2:37I understand she chose that for herself, but I still think any
- 2:40type of job that you do, you shouldn't be necessarily
- 2:43subjected to this kind of stuff. You know, there always needs to
- 2:46be a layer of protection and security around people.
- 2:48And then you get a message like this from a random stranger to
- 2:52your personal phone that is so scary and so wild.
- 2:56So she put this up and then she kept that girl's number.
- 2:59I think it was a girl that messaged her.
- 3:00She kept that girl's number in her Instagram stories.
- 3:03And that, of course, copped a lot of criticism as well.
- 3:06But people were like, Oh my God, now she's like, now Hallie's
- 3:08doxing this girl. Like she should be covering up
- 3:10that phone number I think. I don't know how I feel about
- 3:14that. Like I don't know if I was in
- 3:15that situation if I would have shared her number or if I would
- 3:17have blocked it out. I understand though like her
- 3:20decision to not block it out. This person has invaded Hallie's
- 3:23privacy in such an extreme way by like personally texting her
- 3:28if you want to reach her like DM her is so invasive.
- 3:32So I understand why she was like well fuck that.
- 3:34Like, you know, if you're going to send me a message like this
- 3:36and text my personal number, even though it was like under
- 3:39the guise of being a nice message, I'm going to share your
- 3:41number on my story. So I don't know, I don't know
- 3:44how I feel about that. I don't know if I would have
- 3:45done the same, but that's what happened.
- 3:47So what I think has happened here, because I don't know, I
- 3:50don't know if you guys are on the same algorithm as me, but
- 3:52literally for like at least 48 hours, my whole feed, my whole
- 3:56TikTok for you page was just people talking about this.
- 3:58And I also go on Reddit a lot for my job.
- 4:01Obviously, I'm like trying to see what's going on all the time
- 4:04and I follow New York City influencer subreddit.
- 4:07I don't know what it is about her.
- 4:09They post about her more than any influencer.
- 4:12It's actually wild. So my whole feed has just been
- 4:16filled with this. Obviously, Reddit has been going
- 4:18crazy about her buying this house.
- 4:20It's been such a topic of conversation.
- 4:22And it is kind of bizarre because, I mean, you know,
- 4:25influencers buy houses. They make a lot of money.
- 4:28Like, we know this. So I think there's a few reasons
- 4:30why this like hit people so hard.
- 4:32I think the 1st is that, you know, Hallie built her following
- 4:35off of being like relatable and being this girl from Virginia
- 4:39who came to New York to try and like go to school and like make
- 4:41it. And I think that was a really
- 4:43relatable and interesting story to follow.
- 4:46She's very much like girl next door.
- 4:47And we have seen this before, you know, we have seen fan bases
- 4:51turn on their faves once their fave has made it like they are
- 4:56all about supporting them and building them up and feeling
- 4:58like they're part of that success and that growth.
- 5:01And then when that person actually does blow up and it
- 5:04feels kind of in your face, like if they make a big purchase like
- 5:07a home or something, it feels really on the nose.
- 5:10And it reminds people of this disparity between themselves and
- 5:14this person that they follow. One of the most recent examples
- 5:17of this that I can remember is when Hassan Piker bought a house
- 5:21in 2021. He bought a $3,000,000 house and
- 5:24literally everybody was so bad, like the Internet lost its mind.
- 5:29So this kind of reminds me of that.
- 5:31I also think there's an element to the fact that we know how
- 5:34much Hallie pays for her rent in New York City because when she
- 5:37and her boyfriend broke up last year, I think it was last year.
- 5:40Yeah. I think it was like October,
- 5:41November of last year when they broke up last year, You know,
- 5:44she was like crying on TikTok and people were sending her
- 5:47Venmo and, like, gifts and things like that because she was
- 5:50being really open and vulnerable.
- 5:52And then somebody had sent her a Venmo thing for her whole rent.
- 5:57And she, like, shared the screenshot of that so you could
- 5:59see how much she paid for rent. So I think the fact that we know
- 6:01how much she pays for rent, which is a lot of money in New
- 6:03York City, and she's keeping that apartment and then now
- 6:06she's also able to afford this house in the Hamptons.
- 6:09The Hamptons is notoriously a very expensive area.
- 6:12I know there's a lot of mixed opinions on if her house is
- 6:16actually in the Hamptons or not. I'm not really going to comment
- 6:18on that. I'm not even American, so I
- 6:20don't really know that area at all.
- 6:22But it is not cheap to buy a house probably anywhere in New
- 6:25York State now, let alone anywhere close to the Hamptons
- 6:28or New York City. So it's just such an obvious,
- 6:32like in your face realization, I suppose, of how much money
- 6:37influencers are actually making because like, we know in theory,
- 6:41but I think to see it come to fruition like this and really
- 6:45understand the numbers behind it, it's very in your face.
- 6:49Then the other thing that I wanted to point out was a video
- 6:52by Yasmin. Adeline is getting a bit of
- 6:55traction. She's talking about Hallie's, I
- 6:57think she's talking about Hallie's house.
- 6:58She doesn't quite say it, I don't think, but she says, you
- 7:02know, we need to stop like shitting on influencers for
- 7:04making a lot of money because influencing is really one of the
- 7:08only woman dominated industries that is well paid.
- 7:12And that is so true. And we did have a conversation
- 7:16similar to that in 2018 when the beauty YouTube community started
- 7:20to get really dramatic. And there was just I mean,
- 7:23obviously, as we know, for years after that, the beauty YouTube
- 7:25community basically imploded on itself because of all the drama
- 7:29that was going on. And it got a really bad
- 7:32reputation for being really dramatic, really caddy the space
- 7:36that was not safe for creators. And there was a discussion about
- 7:40the fact that the creators who for the most part, who were like
- 7:43fostering that environment were white men at the top.
- 7:46It was Jeffrey Star, Shane Dawson, James Charles.
- 7:48Obviously there was, you know, Tati and like all these other
- 7:50things involved. But for the most part, it was
- 7:53these men in powerful positions at the top who were making it
- 7:58this really hostile negative place, this really dramatic
- 8:01place when really beauty YouTube started as a community for women
- 8:07and it's a woman dominated corner of the Internet.
- 8:09And it got this really toxic reputation largely because of
- 8:13men at the top, but also because it's like associated with being
- 8:17a woman dominated industry, if that makes sense.
- 8:20So it's interesting to look at it now from the TikTok
- 8:22perspective because completely agree.
- 8:24Like if you consider how much athletes, for example, are paid,
- 8:27and this is one of the points that Yasmin makes.
- 8:29Like nobody bats an eye if a sports player signs a multi
- 8:32$1,000,000 deal with like a protein shake or, you know, with
- 8:35like Nike or whatever. But everyone gets all up in arms
- 8:38when Halle Kate can afford to buy a cottage in the Hamptons.
- 8:41I don't know if this is like a hot take, but in my opinion, I
- 8:44don't see much difference between what a professional
- 8:46sports player is doing versus what you know, a reality star or
- 8:51an influencer is doing. I think when it comes to like
- 8:54what they are providing society, it is very similar.
- 8:59I'm not saying that the talent and the work behind it is
- 9:02similar. I understand that influencing is
- 9:05an objectively easy job. It's not easy in the sense that
- 9:08like you have so much public scrutiny and you know, you're
- 9:12always on 24/7 and it would be very difficult on your mental
- 9:15health. Like I'm not discounting that at
- 9:16all. But in terms of like the output
- 9:18of what you actually have to do day-to-day, it is, we all know,
- 9:20much easier than working most jobs.
- 9:23And I don't think being a professional athlete is much
- 9:25easier than most jobs. But to me, athletes and
- 9:29influencers are in the same category as entertainment,
- 9:32right? Like, if you think about what
- 9:34they're providing society, they are giving us entertainment,
- 9:37they're giving us community. Like, at the end of the day, a
- 9:39sports player is what? Like kicking a ball, hitting a
- 9:42ball for what? And it's kind of the same as
- 9:44what people say about influencers.
- 9:47And both of these industries, both of these careers are
- 9:49helping. At the end of the day, the
- 9:51country make money and corporations make money.
- 9:53And that is why they are paid so much.
- 9:56That is why influencers are paid so much money because at the end
- 9:59of the day, they have attention and attention equals money for
- 10:04corporations. So corporations are paying them.
- 10:06They're helping corporations make money.
- 10:08And it is just capitalism. That is just how it works.
- 10:11And I think it is much easier for us when we are feeling
- 10:15frustrated about the cost of living.
- 10:16And just like everything in life is so hard right now.
- 10:19I think it's much easier for us to project that anger on like
- 10:23individuals and have almost like a representative, like a talking
- 10:27head of like who we're angry at in the influencer, capitalist,
- 10:30like hellscape that we live in than it is for us to be like
- 10:33angry at like the system because that's always, of course, the
- 10:36counter argument. It's like, well, if you're mad
- 10:37about this, like it's not Halle's fault, It's not this
- 10:39influencer's fault, It's the system.
- 10:41Of course it is. Like if you told me that I could
- 10:43post X amount of tik Toks a day and make all of that money, I
- 10:48would do it. I'm sure there's most people
- 10:50would say yes to that, right? But it's much easier to be angry
- 10:53at a person than the system because first of all, what is
- 10:56being angry at the system? What does that even mean?
- 10:58Like who are you mad at? And how do you direct that
- 11:01anger? And how do you make change?
- 11:04And I think that's why I cancel culture.
- 11:05This is just a whole tangent now, but I think that's why
- 11:07cancel culture got so prominent in 2020.
- 11:11We were going through so much collectively, like around the
- 11:13world, and it became much easier for us to say, well, you know
- 11:17what? We can at least direct our anger
- 11:19towards these celebrities and these influencers that we feel
- 11:22are acting not in our best, best interest when it comes to the
- 11:25pandemic, for example. And that feels like tangible
- 11:29change that we can make. Like we can quote UN quote,
- 11:31cancel them. And I'm not saying people are
- 11:33trying to cancel Hallie at all, but I see a similar reaction to
- 11:37this because we are going through a very difficult time
- 11:40right now with the cost of living around the world and the
- 11:42genocide going on. And there's just like a lot.
- 11:44So that's why I don't like when people blame it on like jealousy
- 11:48from a fan base perspective. I think that's a gross
- 11:52oversimplification of what is going on, the dynamic between an
- 11:56influencer and a fan base. And I think being able to just
- 11:59like slap a label like jealousy on it, it also shuts down any
- 12:03critical discussion about what is going on in the creator
- 12:07economy and the world right now with the cost of living and kind
- 12:12of our social media consumption and what watching these people
- 12:17parade around with their wealth, what that's doing to the general
- 12:20public and like all the different nuances related to
- 12:22that, right. So I don't like saying, oh,
- 12:25these people are just jealous. I mean, first of all, yes, I am.
- 12:28I am definitely jealous and I'm sure lots of people are jealous,
- 12:31but there's so much more to that than just jealousy.
- 12:35All right, the next story that I have for you guys after that
- 12:38giant ass tangent is that Speaking of influencer finances,
- 12:44I have a fun little tidbit for you guys.
- 12:45Stassi Baby has revealed who pays when she and Kylie Jenner
- 12:49go out. So in a new TikTok posted this
- 12:52weekend, Stassi Baby and her BFF Kylie Jenner went to Erawan.
- 12:57And in the video, Stassi revealed that she actually pays
- 13:01when she and Kylie go out because Kylie almost always
- 13:04forgets her wallet. So obviously Stassi is rich, but
- 13:07it's interesting to consider like when your best friend, when
- 13:10someone this close to you is an actual billionaire and is
- 13:13significantly more wealthy than your, the rest of your group of
- 13:17friends, like who pays? And like, what's the dynamic
- 13:19there? You like splitting bills,
- 13:20whatever. So I think this actually makes
- 13:22sense when you think about it, because if you think about like
- 13:24how much Kylie seems to treat her friends around her, you know
- 13:28what, they're going on vacations and she buys some lavish gifts
- 13:31and all these things. I think it makes sense that
- 13:33Kylie foots those like big bills.
- 13:35I don't think she's asking Sassy to kick in for like the private
- 13:38jet fuel when they're going to Turks and Caicos or whatever.
- 13:41And she's probably not asking her to, like, Venmo her for, you
- 13:44know, the resort or whatever she's booked.
- 13:46But, yeah, when they go out and they're just, you know, going
- 13:48out for dinner or, like, going to Arowan to get smoothies or
- 13:51like, whatever Stassi's paying. I think that's just such an
- 13:54interesting dynamic. And I don't really have anything
- 13:57else to say about that except for just telling you guys that
- 13:59because I thought it was cool. All right.
- 14:00And the last three that I have for you guys, I feel like this
- 14:03episode is going to piss people off.
- 14:05The pop girlies are copying some backlash for taking advantage of
- 14:09their fans yet again. So this is an ongoing
- 14:12conversation. But music analysis TikTok is
- 14:15expressing increased frustration with pop stars this week, namely
- 14:19Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish for essentially like, feuding
- 14:23publicly over the top spots on the charts and by doing so
- 14:26making their fans collateral damage.
- 14:29So the conversation was triggered by Taylor releasing
- 14:32new versions of the Tortured Poets department that include
- 14:35three live recordings from her recent pair shows only available
- 14:39for 24 hours. But she has put these three
- 14:43songs on three different like editions of the album.
- 14:46So you have to buy all three albums to get all three songs.
- 14:50So this has been looked at as a move to basically knock Billie
- 14:56Eilish, who just released Hit Me Hard and Soft, out of the top
- 14:59spots in the Billboard 200 charts.
- 15:02And first of all, this is open a lot of discussions about how the
- 15:05charts work, that the charts need to start, like basically
- 15:08changing the way that they analyze songs and albums and
- 15:11things like that. Because if artists can just keep
- 15:14doing this, like maintain that top spot, that's not really
- 15:17fair. And it's just hurting the fans
- 15:19at the end of the day. But all of this comes after
- 15:22Billy has been taking some shots, seemingly taking some
- 15:25shots at Taylor in the press. So she appeared in an interview
- 15:29on Station Head this week where she was asked if she planned to
- 15:32put every Hit Me Hard and soft track on her performance set
- 15:35list. And she said she couldn't do
- 15:37that, explaining that her show would, quote, be a million years
- 15:39long and she'd have to cut other songs in her discography.
- 15:43She also called having a three hour long show psychotic.
- 15:46She said nobody wants that. You guys don't want that.
- 15:49I don't even want that as a fan, My favorite artist in the world.
- 15:51I'm not trying to hear them for three hours.
- 15:53You know what I mean? Far too long.
- 15:55And obviously, as we know, the Aris tour is over three hours
- 15:58long. And then in March, I don't know
- 16:00if you guys remember this. I think I reported, I guess I
- 16:03wasn't doing mini scroll in March.
- 16:05I feel like I did report on this.
- 16:06I don't know what some maybe on TikTok.
- 16:08But anyways, in March, Billy spoke with Billboard about
- 16:11sustainability and she called out quote some of the biggest
- 16:13artists in the world for making multiple vinyl packagings to
- 16:17boost their own sales. And she basically said it's so
- 16:19wasteful. So that was also considered like
- 16:22a shot at Taylor Swift. However, Billy has also released
- 16:25several versions of her new album.
- 16:27So it's just like a big mess. But I think it's interesting.
- 16:30It's starting a really good, I think and hopefully productive
- 16:33discussion. And I know there's a lot of
- 16:36people who are like, it's the record labels that make them do
- 16:40this, that make them release all these different versions.
- 16:42I am sure there is a part of that for sure.
- 16:45Like there is a marketing team behind that, but I would argue
- 16:49that when you are at the level of Taylor Swift and even Billie
- 16:52Eilish, who are two of the biggest artists, most well
- 16:55known, famous, successful money making artists in the world, I
- 16:59think they have much more control over their marketing
- 17:02strategy then we're probably giving them credit for.
- 17:05I think it's really convenient to be like Taylor Swift.
- 17:08She's this marketing genius. But then when it suits us as
- 17:12fans of Taylor Swift or any artist to be like, oh, no,
- 17:16actually, you know, it's just her label.
- 17:17She actually has no control over that.
- 17:19Like, you can't have it both ways.
- 17:20I think there's a lot of greed right now when it comes to
- 17:24attention. And my friend Crystal said that
- 17:26she actually commented on a video.
- 17:28I wish I had the screenshots, right, Crystal.
- 17:31She commented that on a video that was like talking about this
- 17:33whole thing. She said, like, the biggest
- 17:35artist in the world right now seems so greedy for attention
- 17:38and it's going to backfire on them.
- 17:40And I completely agree. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 17:44Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 17:47Please remember to rate, review and subscribe if you like this
- 17:49episode, if you like my daily podcast, and I will talk to you
- 17:52guys tomorrow. Bye.
