- 0:18Speaker 3: Well, well, well he's sauntered. No, he's what he's he's
- 0:23Speaker 3: slouched into the studio. Ambled, well, kind of ambled. Yeah,
- 0:27Speaker 3: no gambling, but ambling. I think he ambled into the studio.
- 0:31Speaker 3: He's a Sean Patrick means. He's an editor and writer
- 0:34Speaker 3: at the Salt Lake Tribune. You can read his piece
- 0:38Speaker 3: on Robert Redford in the Sunday Salt Lake Tribune.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Coming up, I've got several pieces on Robert Redford, some
- 0:45Speaker 1: of them are already.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Online, and you can also read Sean's movie reviews movie
- 0:49Speaker 3: cricket dot net. We have only two movies here.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Not a great week for movies, all right, and not
- 0:56Speaker 1: just because Bob left us. So we will start with
- 0:59Speaker 1: a big, bold, beautiful Journey, which is a title that
- 1:03Speaker 1: promises a lot more than it delivers. We start with
- 1:06Speaker 1: Colin Ferrell having to drive from the city to a
- 1:08Speaker 1: wedding four hours away, so he has to run a car,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and the rental place he finds is whimsically weird. It
- 1:15Speaker 1: has a clerk with a curious German accent played by
- 1:18Speaker 1: Phoebe ball or Bridge, which should which should be funny
- 1:22Speaker 1: but isn't, and the mechanics sitting next to her is
- 1:26Speaker 1: Kevin Klein. Well, that should be funny. Again, should be funny,
- 1:30Speaker 1: but it is. He gets the wedding, he meets a
- 1:32Speaker 1: nice woman played by Marcot Robbie and they chat and
- 1:35Speaker 1: make small talk about it. That should be romantic, it
- 1:37Speaker 1: should be. It soon gets it gets a little serious
- 1:40Speaker 1: and she tries to tell him that she's no good
- 1:41Speaker 1: for him. She tends to break men's hearts and so on.
- 1:44Speaker 1: After the wedding, Colin Ferrell's driving back and the magical
- 1:47Speaker 1: GPS on his rental car asks if he wants to
- 1:50Speaker 1: take a big, bold, beautiful journey, and he says yes,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and his first stop involves meeting up with Marco Robbie
- 1:57Speaker 1: again again yes, And at each stop the GPS tells
- 2:01Speaker 1: them to go and go someplace, and they find a door.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Even in the middle of the woods. They find a door,
- 2:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, and the door leads them somewhere,
- 2:12Speaker 1: usually in the past, in a past event of one
- 2:15Speaker 1: of them one or the other. Well, this just sounds
- 2:17Speaker 1: whimsically to like. It starts out very whimsical, which is
- 2:20Speaker 1: not the same as being humorous, and then it turns
- 2:24Speaker 1: quite serious. And because some of some of the events
- 2:28Speaker 1: in the past are not you are not happy ones. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and the tone never quite clicks in either instance. This
- 2:36Speaker 1: reminded me. This reminded me actually a lot of the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Life of Chuck a few months, which was another movie
- 2:42Speaker 1: that used fantasy ideas to tell a story about the
- 2:44Speaker 1: human condition, and that one didn't work either. Two stars
- 2:49Speaker 1: for a big, bold, beautiful journey. It's too bad because
- 2:52Speaker 1: the director here is a guy named Coganata, just one name, Coganada,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and he's brilliant. He's done great works Columbus. His first
- 2:59Speaker 1: movie with John chow As as an architect was just amazing.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And he did one called After Gang which was about
- 3:08Speaker 1: robot with about a family whose robot was dying, played
- 3:12Speaker 1: by and then Colin Farrell was the lead in Then too.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So anyway, good director, but this one just misses completely.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Two stars. Two stars.
- 3:20Speaker 3: All okay, all right, well, then let's move on to
- 3:23Speaker 3: him make for it.
- 3:25Speaker 1: No no, no, no, I actually watched these back to back.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I watched him and then they watched a big, old,
- 3:30Speaker 1: beautiful journey last night over at megaplex. This one starts
- 3:34Speaker 1: with a football player college superstar quarterback named Cameron Kid
- 3:37Speaker 1: played by Tyreek Withers, who's a pretty cool young actor.
- 3:41Speaker 1: He was in the I Know You Did last Summer
- 3:45Speaker 1: movie earlier this year. He's destined to go to the
- 3:47Speaker 1: San Antonio Saviors and be the successor to their star
- 3:51Speaker 1: quarterback Isaiah White played by Marlon Wayans. And and with
- 3:56Speaker 1: with with a team name like San Antonio Savers, you
- 3:58Speaker 1: you you learned very quickly the NFL had absolutely nothing
- 4:01Speaker 1: to do with this movie. For reasons. To become blatantly obvious,
- 4:06Speaker 1: Cameron gets an invite to work out at Isaiah's compound
- 4:08Speaker 1: out in the desert, and he gets there and he
- 4:10Speaker 1: finds it very isolating and very tough, with Isaiah doing
- 4:14Speaker 1: things in training that are sometimes brutal and very bloody.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But Cameron wants to be the best, and Isaiah says frequently,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you know, being the best means sacrifice, and if you
- 4:25Speaker 1: want to be the goat, you got to sacrifice. So yes,
- 4:28Speaker 1: we are sacrificing a goat. And and that's and that's
- 4:32Speaker 1: the that's the level of the dialogue here. Wow, that's
- 4:35Speaker 1: it's kind of bad obvious at some points. Uh, as
- 4:39Speaker 1: as we get going with figuring out whether what what
- 4:43Speaker 1: what what Cameron is seeing, whether it's real or something
- 4:46Speaker 1: he's hallucinating because he had a brain injury earlier. Early
- 4:50Speaker 1: in the movie, uh it gets very dark and very weird,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and not in a good way. The one good thing, though,
- 4:55Speaker 1: is that Marlon Wayas gives a pretty good performances as
- 4:59Speaker 1: the as this veteran quarterback, quarterback who has who may
- 5:02Speaker 1: have some secrets about his longevity. Two and a half
- 5:06Speaker 1: stars for him. So and it's playing.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Everywhere before you sound dispirited about the whole.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But it was not a good It was not good
- 5:14Speaker 1: at night. It was not a good night at the movies.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Can I Pollyanna this a little bit please? Okay, So
- 5:18Speaker 2: there's nothing really to go see in the movies. Not
- 5:20Speaker 2: so this weekend. If you were to catch up on
- 5:24Speaker 2: or revisit Robert Redford, what would you suggest.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I have a stack of DVDs at home. I just
- 5:30Speaker 1: pulled off my shelf. I haven't gone all the way
- 5:32Speaker 1: through my shelves, but I've just pulled off about half
- 5:34Speaker 1: a dozen. Start with I would say, start with Butch
- 5:38Speaker 1: Cassidy in the Sunnetts Kid, Bill's never seen it? Bill
- 5:41Speaker 1: you need Will you watch that this weekend? Maybe? Yeah?
- 5:45Speaker 1: I never had no I will. I will be someplace
- 5:47Speaker 1: without entertainment. Oh okay, okay, uh yeah, start with Butcher
- 5:52Speaker 1: Sundance is a good place to start. The sting The
- 5:56Speaker 1: Candidate is a great one. I love that movie. He
- 5:59Speaker 1: talked for years about wanting to do a sequel to
- 6:01Speaker 1: The Candidate, show Bill McKay as a as an old
- 6:04Speaker 1: veteran having having to you know, years of years of
- 6:08Speaker 1: compromise and being sort of you know, confronted with that
- 6:11Speaker 1: and having to force to get back to his ideals. Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'd watched that. That would have been a great One.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Thing is he never made a movie. He never played
- 6:19Speaker 1: the same role in a movie twice with one exception,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and that was in an Avengers endgame. Yes, when he
- 6:25Speaker 1: came out, when when he came out of retirement and
- 6:28Speaker 1: played out Secretary of Pierce again, at which he played
- 6:32Speaker 1: in Captain America The Winter Soldier. I would recommend Captain
- 6:35Speaker 1: America The Winter Soldier. He's very good. He's very good
- 6:38Speaker 1: in that it's it's a great I mean, he's he's
- 6:40Speaker 1: a straight up villain, which he never really did as
- 6:42Speaker 1: a movie star, and it and it works because the
- 6:47Speaker 1: last human on Earth you would expect to say Hail
- 6:49Speaker 1: Hydra is Robert freaking Redford. Yeah. So how about All
- 6:54Speaker 1: is Lost? I really liked that was a great one
- 6:56Speaker 1: from twenty thirteen, great one man performances. He's out on
- 6:59Speaker 1: a boat solo and having to survive when when something
- 7:04Speaker 1: hits the boat and starts taking on water.
- 7:07Speaker 3: As I recall, there's one line of one word fifty
- 7:10Speaker 3: one words to fifty one.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I only remember one yeah, when yeah, something goes wrong
- 7:16Speaker 1: and he swears yeah, but yeah, fifty one words of
- 7:19Speaker 1: dialogue throughout in a one hundred minute movie. And it
- 7:22Speaker 1: is really just really effective and great performance. And he
- 7:25Speaker 1: did he did his own stunts. He lost hearing in
- 7:28Speaker 1: one ear because of because of a water hose really
- 7:31Speaker 1: hit him during one of the during one of the stunts,
- 7:36Speaker 1: he and some of those I noticed you're not mentioning
- 7:39Speaker 1: the Electric Cords. Okay. I I have a soft spot
- 7:42Speaker 1: for the elect because because it is because it is
- 7:45Speaker 1: a great reunion of Bob and Jane Fonda. That's right. Nelson,
- 7:50Speaker 1: Willie Nelson's in it. It's very it's very it's it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: a hangout movie. Yeah, because you're with Willie and you're
- 7:56Speaker 1: probably getting at contact high the natural in the eighties,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I remember watching Jeremiah Johnson with my dad. Yeah, I've
- 8:06Speaker 1: never Okay, that's one I've never seen. There is a
- 8:08Speaker 1: Robert Redford movie. You have seen a couple, couple. Down
- 8:13Speaker 1: Hill Racer is great, uh, Dan Hill Racer is is
- 8:16Speaker 1: historically significant too, because, first off, it was the first
- 8:19Speaker 1: movie he produced, and it was part of it. He
- 8:22Speaker 1: had this idea of making a series of movies about
- 8:24Speaker 1: the concept of winning and why winning is important in
- 8:28Speaker 1: American society. Uh. And he made that with with down
- 8:31Speaker 1: Hill Racer in the Canada and even Quish Show. But
- 8:35Speaker 1: it but the movie bombed and he blamed the studio
- 8:37Speaker 1: for it and lack of support from the studio, And
- 8:40Speaker 1: that's what started him on the on the thoughts of
- 8:43Speaker 1: how can I get these movies made outside the studio system.
- 8:45Speaker 1: And that's what and that's and that eventually turned into
- 8:49Speaker 1: Sun Dan's Institute. I hated it out of Africa. I
- 8:53Speaker 1: will credit Bob on out of Africa that he was
- 8:55Speaker 1: willing to take second field to Meryl in that movie,
- 8:59Speaker 1: which some stars we're not due. I need to watch
- 9:02Speaker 1: it again. It's been a long time and but uh
- 9:06Speaker 1: I have that. I have that disc on my stack too,
- 9:08Speaker 1: so all right, well there we go.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Robert Rodford eighty nine years old. He was pissed at
- 9:13Speaker 3: the studio for not promoting all his loss too.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It was an interesting conversation at the festival opening day
- 9:21Speaker 1: press conference, and I moderated it and and somebody had
- 9:24Speaker 1: to ask and I got there first.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Thank you, Shaw Means sltrib dot commoviecricket dot net.
