Transcript
- 0:00The Boroughs of Berea is a conversational podcast. We study the Bible and we talk about it.
- 0:05Not all of us are of the same faith, and one of us doesn't actually have a faith.
- 0:10And that's wonderful. We all love one another, and we're going to continue to talk about
- 0:14these things.
- 0:15The things we believe in and the things we believe about what we read in the Bible. Not
- 0:19all of these are necessarily true. Some of it is opinion and speculation. Thank you for
- 0:25listening and speculating with us.
- 0:27There you go. That was good. Yes.
- 0:28You are listening to The Boroughs of Berea.
- 0:37Side Studies
- 0:38Welcome back to The Boroughs of Berea. I'm Rick, the rickening, Carter. And to my right,
- 0:50we got Rick, the Jelly Welch.
- 0:52The Jelly.
- 0:53I like it.
- 0:54The sickening rickening.
- 0:55Welch's jelly only, sucker.
- 0:56Sounds like a Dick Tracy character.
- 0:57I'm a smucker's kind of guy. Actually, I make my own jelly.
- 1:01I got you. And across from me, we have Serita, The Edge, Edgerton.
- 1:05Ola.
- 1:06And behind the glass, always the dedicated, Andy Bishop.
- 1:09Kapow.
- 1:10Nice.
- 1:11You just said Kapow. There's going to have a meeting that later.
- 1:16Oh.
- 1:17Good. You'll see.
- 1:18Oh, did I just accidentally do foreshadow?
- 1:20You did a self-fulfilling prophetic move.
- 1:23Oh my gosh.
- 1:24Foreshadow.
- 1:25All right, guys, we're back again for another Side Study. If you've been listening to our
- 1:31Side Studies, there's a couple that Serita done. Hopefully, as a dedicated listener,
- 1:38you've been listening to them. We kind of foreshadowed this podcast. I was pretty excited
- 1:44during one of her episodes or both episodes about this discussion. This Side Study for
- 1:50me has been on my heart for quite some time. It kind of started with me when I was a Sunday
- 1:57School teacher at a local church back in Columbia. I did a lesson on this particular chapter.
- 2:05The chapter is the discussion with Mr. Nicodemus. It's John chapter 3 verses 1 through 21.
- 2:12And when I did the lesson that day on that particular chapter, even though I did it and
- 2:20I was done with it, in my spirit I wasn't done. There just wasn't something right about
- 2:25it for me.
- 2:26Eventually, listening to somebody that you'll probably hear, or you've already heard, a
- 2:34guy named Mr. Len Hiles. We did a podcast with him. And you should have heard that by
- 2:40now.
- 2:41Not yet.
- 2:42There was something that he told, he mentioned in a sermon that I was listening to him that
- 2:49really spun this whole conversation off and got me going down a particular path. And when
- 2:59Rick mentioned to me some time ago about doing Side Studies, this was kind of one of the
- 3:05ones that I really wanted to start on. Except for the fact that one you probably should
- 3:10have heard already, the one that we just did about Adam from me, that one kind of took
- 3:15precedence over this one until I could get through it. So, this one kind of here hopefully
- 3:21is not necessarily my coup de grave of Side Studies, but this one's really, I really wanted
- 3:27to put something into this one.
- 3:30So I said I might ask this question a lot if you want to ask it, about how long have
- 3:35you heard or read these verses, any ones in particular? It may become repetitive, which
- 3:41I promise is a good thing. I hope that as a part of bringing you Side Studies is to
- 3:46give you a perspective of verses or text that you might be able to look at from a different
- 3:51way you haven't before. Also to show my work for you to see it in that way. So with that
- 3:57being said, let's look at John chapter 3, verses 1 through 21.
- 4:01Have you ever heard of Batman? I feel certain you have. Based on your age, you may have
- 4:06a particular favorite version of the character, being that there are so many to date. Whether
- 4:12you're a fan of the TV series that starred the late great actor Adam West, which was
- 4:27just played for you, or the newer version that was played by Christian Bale. Bale was
- 4:32one of my favorite versions along with Michael Keaton.
- 4:35Have you guys seen any Robert Pattinson one though? That one was actually really good.
- 4:40I liked it. He actually fits better with what you're describing here actually.
- 4:46Well funny you should say, my kids are like, mom turn it to MTV. They actually had, I love
- 4:53the 80s videos, you know, show videos. And I turned it on and it was the Prince, Batman,
- 4:59Bad Dance. I had forgotten how incredibly talented, he played every character. Do y'all
- 5:07realize that? They were all Prince. I don't know that I remember that from way back in
- 5:11the day. Like I remember the song, I remember the video, but I never realized that he was
- 5:15every person in the video. I don't remember that. I mean, I know he played every instrument
- 5:19on it. Except for the ladies dancing. But he was literally every, I mean, it was so cool.
- 5:25I had forgotten how cool the Michael Keaton version was.
- 5:27Prince was the-
- 5:29Vicky Vale.
- 5:30Andy, what's that device that they record on and they loop it? Is it a loop back box?
- 5:38That they play an instrument on, record it.
- 5:40You mean just a tape machine? I mean there's a looper.
- 5:43It's a looper, but I think a digital one.
- 5:45Yeah, but it wouldn't have been a digital looper when Prince was doing it. It would
- 5:48have been something else.
- 5:49No, but that's what I meant. Prince was the pioneer to stuff like that because he did
- 5:52every, all of it. All by himself.
- 5:54Anyway, full disclosure, I saw that the other day. I was like, yeah.
- 5:58So tracking back on this one, so not to get sidetracked with Batman, of course. However,
- 6:05the principle core of Batman-
- 6:06The answer is yes. The answer to your question is yes, I've heard of Batman.
- 6:10Yes. You heard of him? You sure?
- 6:11I have.
- 6:12No.
- 6:13Once or twice.
- 6:14Once or twice.
- 6:15Yeah, just a couple of times.
- 6:16Cool. However, the principle core of Batman was in all different versions, they were all
- 6:20the same. He was a detective using all available means to solve a crime or mystery. Part of
- 6:26the storytelling of the show or movie was presented in this way. The good guy was caught
- 6:31by the bad guy. The bad guy tells the good guy the whole plot of the crime because he
- 6:36feels he has all control in the ability to keep the one person that could stop his plans
- 6:42from actually stopping him.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:45Well, how does that work out for the bad guy? For the plot of the story, not too good.
- 6:50It would be such a short story or movie if it did. So, how does this anything this tie
- 6:56into John chapter 3? Let's get into this. As much as we study the Bible, we know how
- 7:02the story of Jesus goes. You should be able to flip through the pages of his story in
- 7:07your mind as if it were a comic book and see the pictures on the pages and know what's
- 7:11going on. From his birth to his miracles, his death, burial, and resurrection without
- 7:18even reading a word. So, is it possible that chapters 3 verses 1 through 21 is the full
- 7:25plot of Jesus spoken at the beginning of John's book? This plot is not spoken of in any way
- 7:32in the other synoptic gospels. However, this conversation is between two of the most interesting
- 7:38people at the time it happens. It's like having the Old Covenant and the New Covenant
- 7:43in the same room together at the same time discussing how things have been and what's
- 7:48coming up. Kind of mind blowing for me.
- 7:51Yeah. I like the way you put that. The Old Covenant and the New Covenant in the same
- 7:55room. It's so true.
- 7:57Again with more analogies, it's like having a room of five generation of family members
- 8:01to take one photograph. So, how does this all tie together do you think? Do you think
- 8:08it, how it could tie up maybe?
- 8:09I don't really understand your question. What do you mean?
- 8:13I know.
- 8:14Just rephrase that. Tell me what you mean.
- 8:16Well, I mean, when you think of…
- 8:17How does it all tie together?
- 8:18Well, how do you think that based on what you understand of John chapter 3…
- 8:24Is that Greg?
- 8:26That's Greg.
- 8:27No, that's Fancy in the other room, pitching yourself.
- 8:30That's hilarious.
- 8:31She's going to the vet Tuesday.
- 8:32So when you think of John chapter 3, most likely what are you going to go to?
- 8:3616.
- 8:37Absolutely. That's a big one to pick up on.
- 8:39So, I mean, can it anything to tie them together? So, let's do flashback time. 88 miles an
- 8:46hour everybody.
- 8:47All right.
- 8:49Do you remember the first Burroughs side study that was a three-part series?
- 8:53I do.
- 8:54I bet you do. And we've recently talked about it.
- 8:57Is it the Who Wrote the Book of John?
- 8:59I'll help you find, I'll help you out if you don't know. It was Who Wrote the Book
- 9:02of John. Do you remember…
- 9:05Oh dang, I turned the page.
- 9:08Do you remember who was the one that was speculated that wrote that book? Hint, hint.
- 9:14John Eliezer.
- 9:16Sing it, Andy.
- 9:17Blame Lazarus.
- 9:19It's Lazarus, right?
- 9:23There was something mentioned about Lazarus and his position connection with a certain
- 9:27community. Could you remember that?
- 9:31Rick pointed out that Lazarus was in the priesthood of the Jewish temple because of the writings
- 9:36of John.
- 9:37They pointed out how Lazarus was able to be in certain areas of the temple to be present
- 9:42during his recorded conversation about Jesus.
- 9:45Full disclosure about this book is that I believe that Lazarus is the person that either
- 9:50wrote this book or dictated it to another disciple for it to be written down.
- 9:56The point brought out during that side study pointed to it, and I agree with it.
- 10:04Also supporting material is on the Berean Bible Church website on a past sermon by
- 10:08David Curtis.
- 10:09Yes, it is there. I used those. I used a lot of his notes from that. If you go to our Patreon
- 10:16page and you become a patron, actually you can get them for free. You don't have to
- 10:20be a patron, but I've put all my notes on the Patreon page if people want to read it.
- 10:25Sweet.
- 10:26Yep, they're all out there.
- 10:27You can give money so we can get gas.
- 10:28Yeah, y'all need gas climbing up and down this mountain.
- 10:31Welcome to Mo's.
- 10:32Not that kind of gas.
- 10:34I got you.
- 10:35Well, they get gas money for the crew, right?
- 10:36Yeah, you put the tip in and get gas.
- 10:38She was talking about a different kind of gas. She was right about both.
- 10:41But you can get both there. You can be wrong. Get both there.
- 10:45So my first point in this side study that came to me during this study about the context
- 10:50of this whole conversation, here we go. I believe that Lazarus knew Nicodemus from his
- 10:56time in the temple. Could have even studied under Nicodemus.
- 11:01One of the things that we're not privy to is when did Jesus and Lazarus meet, or of
- 11:07Lazarus and Nicodemus. Jesus loved Lazarus, but we're not given any background to their
- 11:13relationship.
- 11:14But we can speculate.
- 11:15Yeah, which is what he's going to do.
- 11:18This is where we're going.
- 11:19Oh, I want to speculate. I haven't read, I want to speculate.
- 11:23What we also don't really know is what brought Nicodemus to Jesus. Could it have been Lazarus
- 11:29all along? The fact that Nicodemus coming to Jesus during the night hours could have
- 11:35been for the protection of all that were involved in this meeting.
- 11:39Maybe not just covering up Nicodemus' own backside on this one.
- 11:43One thing that we see is that Nicodemus calls Jesus rabbi in verse 2. Nicodemus also says
- 11:51we, which I have always considered that was a reference to the temple priests.
- 11:56However, do we ever see anyone else from the temple referring to Jesus in such words?
- 12:04No.
- 12:06No other priest ever?
- 12:07Only Nicodemus who is a ruler. He's a part of the Sanhedrin.
- 12:11Yes, but he's a Pharisee.
- 12:14He's a Pharisee.
- 12:15Could the we refer to the people that were living in that house? Whose home could that
- 12:22conversation have taken place? First, I don't believe that a teacher of Israel, in quotations,
- 12:30would have just gone to anyone's home, let alone speak to such a controversial person.
- 12:36It would have to have been a home that Nicodemus would have felt safe to be at even if it was
- 12:42at night. Those guys always wore clothing that stuck out as to who they were. It would
- 12:48be like driving a Ferrari in a trailer park. You're not going to miss it.
- 12:53That's a nice ride you got there, buddy.
- 12:57Then to call him rabbi is such a significant term, especially from Nicodemus. It's like
- 13:02a pilot talking to another pilot. It would have been with great respect for Nicodemus
- 13:07to do so. Again, what we're not privy to is how does Nicodemus know Jesus so well?
- 13:15Also in verse 2, Nic says that Jesus has come from God, for no one could perform these signs
- 13:22you do unless you were with him. Did he, being Nicodemus, physically see the signs? If he
- 13:31did, he would have had to be near him or hanging out with Jesus. How would Nic have the time
- 13:37to hang out with a traveling preacher that was preaching to the lowest of people, plus
- 13:43all the sick and the lame that Jesus was healing? I feel Nic would have not been near any of
- 13:49them due to the chance of becoming unclean from one of them. That would have kept Nic
- 13:54from the temple, having to go through all the ceremonies to clean himself, not to mention
- 14:00the blemish it would have put on him with other religious leaders around him. Was it
- 14:07Lazarus all along telling Nicodemus about Jesus? Was he the mediator, the middle man?
- 14:15I know, I know, a lot of speculation here, but this is what side studies are for, remember?
- 14:22Looking at it a whole new way, the context this seems to fit so well. Lazarus was the
- 14:28reason for the season.
- 14:32Verse 3 in the conversation has so much weight to it. Being that it's right at the beginning
- 14:37of the written discussion, Jesus tells Nic right off the bat, truly I tell you, unless
- 14:44someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. What about verse 2 directs us to Jesus
- 14:51making that statement so soon? Could there be more to this context, and we are only given
- 14:58the highlights? I feel there must be. Nothing points to them talking about the kingdom of
- 15:05God to start with. Jesus just hits him with it. Now, I have always been told that this
- 15:11verse is referring to a spiritual rebirth. Is that what you've heard?
- 15:16Oh yeah, I mean, he must be born again, and then he goes on to explain it a little bit,
- 15:21but yeah, that's the way I've heard it.
- 15:24There's a particular – I'm going to say on the side, we're going to get to it – but
- 15:27there's a particular key word that I'm going to come back to, and that's in that particular
- 15:33verse that really ties to something that was in that first side study about who wrote the
- 15:40book of John. There was a purpose that the original writer, that was something that he
- 15:47was doing in that whole book. Do you remember what he was doing?
- 15:53Hiding himself?
- 15:54Boom.
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:56He was hiding.
- 15:57And he's hidden from all of the other synoptic gospels he's never mentioned.
- 16:00Yes.
- 16:01And there's a reason, we believe.
- 16:03There's interesting that Nicodemus is only mentioned in John.
- 16:06Only.
- 16:07Only.
- 16:08That's right.
- 16:09So, there may have been a personal connection, being that he was in a part of the temple,
- 16:16he had a personal connection to him. So, Nick's response is a legit one, I feel. How can a
- 16:22rebirth happen? This was not a discussion on the resurrection, or was it? Being resurrected
- 16:29never said that you would be younger in the process, or was that even the point? At least
- 16:36nothing in the Old Testament says that. You just continue from where you died. In the
- 16:41verse 4, Nick says, how can anyone be born when he's old? Can he enter his mother's
- 16:48womb a second time and be born? I can almost see Nick's face with the amount of puzzlement
- 16:54he would have to have on it.
- 16:55It's like a Shakespearean chuckle line.
- 16:58Yeah, it is.
- 16:59What am I to crawl back into the womb of my mother?
- 17:01Yes. Into the womb of my mother.
- 17:05And thou mother would sayest, no.
- 17:07Not a chance.
- 17:08Yeah, totally.
- 17:09Not a chance.
- 17:10Not a chance.
- 17:11Not going back in there.
- 17:14I mean, it's not far off, Andy.
- 17:17That's the joke he's making, for sure. It sounds Shakespearean to me.
- 17:21You know, he doesn't even leave the conversation or tear his clothes like other leaders had
- 17:27in the Bible based on Jesus' words. So, this must show something about Nick's disposition
- 17:33here, or at least to his state of mind, to still be inquisitive or open to a new perspective.
- 17:40Did Jesus know more about Nicodemus' openness to keep telling Nick what he was going to
- 17:44tell him? There must be more to this than meets the eye.
- 17:49Could it have been Lazarus?
- 17:52Verse 5, Jesus' response is another big one, yet different.
- 17:57Jesus says, truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot
- 18:02enter the kingdom of God.
- 18:05Can you see the difference here?
- 18:07Verse 3 says, you must be born again to see the kingdom.
- 18:12Now he's saying that you must be born of water and Spirit to enter the kingdom.
- 18:18Just seeing the kingdom is not the same as entering the kingdom. Jesus speaks of both
- 18:22so differently.
- 18:24Where was the kingdom of God to be seen and how were you to enter that kingdom?
- 18:30Let's look at the words of Jesus for some answers.
- 18:33Sarita, you want to read these verses?
- 18:35Sure. In relation to seeing the kingdom, let's look at a few verses.
- 18:39Matthew 4, 17, from then on Jesus began to preach, repent because the kingdom of heaven
- 18:45has come near.
- 18:47Matthew 6, 33, but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these
- 18:56things will be provided for you.
- 18:59Matthew 12, 28, if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has
- 19:04come upon you.
- 19:06Luke 17, 20, being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered
- 19:12them, the kingdom of God is not coming with something observable.
- 19:16Luke 17, 21, no one will say, see here or there for you see the kingdom of God is in
- 19:23your midst.
- 19:24John 21, 7, the disciple, the one Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord.
- 19:32Rick you want to follow up?
- 19:33Sure, in relation to entering the kingdom, Matthew 7, 13, enter through the narrow gate
- 19:38for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction and there are many who
- 19:42go through it.
- 19:44Matthew 7, 14, how narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life and
- 19:48if you find it.
- 19:50Luke 13, 24, make every effort to enter through the narrow door because I tell you many will
- 19:54try to enter and won't be able.
- 19:56John 10, 9, I am the gate, if anyone enters by me he will be saved and will come in and
- 20:01go out and find pasture.
- 20:04Take a moment to rewind this quick and listen to these verses and see if you can hear it.
- 20:08I'll give you a moment.
- 20:12Let's go through where I'm trying to point you to.
- 20:15There are a couple things.
- 20:16Can you see who the kingdom of God is?
- 20:20How about where to enter the kingdom?
- 20:23They are both Jesus.
- 20:26In all those verses Jesus was referring to himself, yet he is telling Nicodemus that
- 20:32you cannot see it unless someone is born, someone, hint, hint Rick, is born again.
- 20:39There is also a change in perspectives by the writers.
- 20:43Did you hear any difference in the way John was saying?
- 20:47Lazarus has a whole different view.
- 20:50Remember why?
- 20:51It even goes back to the beginning of this book.
- 20:55Jesus was raised again.
- 20:58Can you see the difference?
- 21:01In the first synoptic gospels, when you can actually read them, there is a difference
- 21:07in how they write.
- 21:10They're writing about Jesus, but they're not specific.
- 21:15John was deadly specific in who he was writing to.
- 21:20The interesting part in John 21, when the disciples, after the resurrection and how
- 21:25it happened, the disciples went back to doing what they normally did, and they were fishing.
- 21:30Jesus walks to them up on the shore, and he comes up and he talks to them.
- 21:36Nobody notices, but somebody did.
- 21:40Because the disciples…
- 21:41The disciples of Jesus loved it.
- 21:42And who is that?
- 21:43That was Lazarus.
- 21:44That's who I say it is.
- 21:45Lazarus was the one that could see him.
- 21:48So the door, if you look at the synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, they refer to a door,
- 21:55but John's writing is specific.
- 21:58He says that Jesus… because he says, I am the door.
- 22:02There's a completely different narrative in John's book, and I believe it's Lazarus'
- 22:08book.
- 22:09You did a great job in your side study that I really wanted to point to, but I couldn't,
- 22:14because a lot of the IM statements that you were pointing to in your side study was all
- 22:19in John's.
- 22:20They all came from John.
- 22:21They all came from John.
- 22:24Lazarus was the only one that could truly see who Jesus was.
- 22:29The only reason that he had?
- 22:31Why?
- 22:32Because he had been dead and resurrected.
- 22:35He went somewhere that none of us had been and came back.
- 22:38Now, I say us, and that's a misnomer, during his time, he was the only one that had went
- 22:46back and come back.
- 22:47There were other people that had happened, and I'm about to jump a little bit ahead
- 22:51of myself here, but they weren't there for this conversation, and they didn't write
- 22:56anything that we know of.
- 22:59Lazarus was the only one that was writing anything for the purpose of proving who Jesus
- 23:04was.
- 23:06So as we continue on, in verse 6, Jesus says, whatever is born of flesh is flesh, and whatever
- 23:16is born of spirit is spirit.
- 23:18I used to believe this was a continuation of the born-again spirituality context.
- 23:23However, I feel that Paul can help us understand some of the meaning here.
- 23:29Paul wrote in Galatians 4 about Abraham's two sons, Galatians 4, 23, but the one by
- 23:37the slave, which was Hagar, was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the
- 23:43free woman, Sarah, was born through the promise.
- 23:47Verse 29 says, but as then the child born as a result of the flesh persecuted the one
- 23:53born as a result of the spirit as also now.
- 23:57From this we can see that Jesus is telling Nicodemus that there is a major difference
- 24:02in how a person is born.
- 24:04Even Jesus himself was born of the Holy Spirit in Luke 1.35, the Holy Spirit will come upon
- 24:12you, being Mary, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
- 24:17Also in verse 36, Mary's relative Elizabeth in her old age was going to have a son by
- 24:22the same way.
- 24:24Do you see the possible context here?
- 24:27Can you see it?
- 24:28Yeah, I do.
- 24:29What do you mean?
- 24:30Walk me in.
- 24:31She was going to have a son by the same way.
- 24:32Walk my dummy brain in here.
- 24:35Jesus basically in the beginning is telling, the book is written, I feel, by Lazarus, and
- 24:42it's almost written in a, as we brought out in the last side study, it's almost written
- 24:48in a hidden way, because Lazarus is trying to write his story, but he's also trying to
- 24:53hide some factuals in it that doesn't point to him.
- 24:57Yep.
- 24:58Okay.
- 24:59So, that's where, this is where some of the, I feel the confusion of what we're trying
- 25:04to understand of what's written versus what Lazarus is trying to tell.
- 25:10So I think the way that, what Andy's looking for is when he said to walk him in.
- 25:14I'm sorry if I missed it.
- 25:15Huh?
- 25:16I'm sorry if I missed it.
- 25:17No, you're good.
- 25:18Go ahead.
- 25:19So, Lazarus is explaining something that only Lazarus could explain because of the experience
- 25:26that Lazarus had.
- 25:27And because what I had said was that Lazarus was obviously connected to the temple.
- 25:31He was able to get into the innermost sanctum of the Sanhedrin.
- 25:35He was able to get into King Herod.
- 25:37He was able to, all of these places he has access to, which is unusual.
- 25:43That's why I say it can't be the apostle John.
- 25:45He did not have access.
- 25:46He was a fisherman.
- 25:47It was impossible.
- 25:49So in Acts chapter four, we learned they didn't even know who John or Peter were.
- 25:54They didn't know them.
- 25:55So they'd heard of these men that were talking about Jesus, but they didn't know him.
- 25:58They saw that they were unlearned fishermen.
- 26:00So Lazarus is a unique person, but he's so unique that none of the other gospels talk
- 26:04about him.
- 26:05Yeah, he's high and he's educated.
- 26:07He's high, he's educated, but he's also, because he is high and educated, he has access to
- 26:12the man that Jesus is talking to in John chapter three, Nicodemus, the ruler of the Jews.
- 26:17And so Jesus has this opportunity to sit down and talk with this man, Nicodemus, under the
- 26:22cover of night.
- 26:23And we've always been taught because he was trying to hide or whatever.
- 26:25And you know, Rick III is not saying that.
- 26:29He's saying maybe the meeting is a little different.
- 26:32Maybe it was the safe place for them to meet at night because it was Lazarus' house.
- 26:36This is where they went.
- 26:38Sure, that computes.
- 26:39Absolutely possible.
- 26:40That's why John is such a different gospel in regard to the other ones.
- 26:44He has seven miracles that are not mentioned.
- 26:47There are no demonic possessions or, you know, he says, if you see the demons and the spirit
- 26:51of the Lord is coming upon, you know, the kingdom of God has come upon you, but you
- 26:55never see any like demon exorcisms in the gospel of John.
- 26:59Like it's different.
- 27:00It's a completely different book.
- 27:03But Lazarus has seen the other side.
- 27:07He's been, he's crossed that plane of life into death for four days and Jesus brings
- 27:15him back.
- 27:16He's a unique individual.
- 27:18And I think that what, how do I put this?
- 27:27The way that he's actually just driving it home more that Lazarus is the author of this
- 27:31book.
- 27:32He really believes that.
- 27:34The other part that I think is fascinating, that's one thing I've learned from extended
- 27:39podcasts.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:41Anyway.
- 27:42And a lot of people don't even believe this.
- 27:44You know, they don't.
- 27:45They think it's the apostle John the beloved and that's what you hear.
- 27:47And even the Bible, you know, calls it the gospel of John.
- 27:50And that's a good, your question about walking you in is a great question.
- 27:54And I think now I understand why I missed it.
- 27:57I'm coming from a perspective of learning that you didn't have.
- 28:01You got to remember how little I know.
- 28:03I often need the Cliff Notes version in the middle of an episode.
- 28:07You're good.
- 28:08Absolutely right.
- 28:09And we've been taught all of the other things that we're trying to unlearn.
- 28:11Yes.
- 28:12And a lot of this is coming from, and I know Sarita understands where I'm coming from,
- 28:17because maybe some of the stuff I'm coming from.
- 28:20A lot of the things that I used to believe, these verses meant something different to
- 28:25me.
- 28:26Because the narrative was given to you.
- 28:28Yes.
- 28:29The narrative was given to me that this meant something completely different, that it meant
- 28:33a spiritual rebirth, that we're born again.
- 28:36We have to be, because John says so in the book of John, because Jesus told us that we
- 28:41must be born again.
- 28:43Now…
- 28:44Which is true.
- 28:45You have to be born again.
- 28:46What were you trying to say, Sarita?
- 28:48Okay, so I have a question about the end of what you just said about Elizabeth.
- 28:55You said the Holy Spirit will come upon you, Mary, and the power of the Most High will
- 28:58overshadow you.
- 28:59I understand that.
- 29:00Yes.
- 29:01Mary's relative, Elizabeth, in her old age was going to have a son the same way?
- 29:06It was a… because of her old age, the Holy Spirit enabled that birth.
- 29:13She was barren.
- 29:14She was able to have the child, but he also had the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb,
- 29:17which is unusual.
- 29:18There's only two people that that ever happened to.
- 29:20Correct.
- 29:21But I just want to make sure that we're clear that she was impregnated by her husband.
- 29:26No, no, not the Holy Spirit.
- 29:27Yeah, man.
- 29:28I just want to be sure.
- 29:29It was kind of…
- 29:30And some of this may help.
- 29:31Like, overshadowed her womb.
- 29:32No.
- 29:33No.
- 29:34But it made it possible.
- 29:35Yes.
- 29:36God made it possible through the Holy Spirit.
- 29:37I get where you're going now.
- 29:38Yes.
- 29:39Perfect.
- 29:40Yes.
- 29:41Good question.
- 29:42Plus, it's a great pro-life scripture when the baby jumps in the womb, embryo, fetus
- 29:47Jesus.
- 29:48All right.
- 29:49Now, we'll get back to the born-again part.
- 29:50It was John the Baptist that leapt in the womb.
- 29:53Yes.
- 29:54Yes, yes.
- 29:55Perfect.
- 29:56With fetus baby Jesus.
- 29:57Yeah.
- 29:58So, in verse 7, Jesus says, do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again.
- 30:04Because this verse seemed to fit the context of the verse before it and after it.
- 30:08Seems to jump around for a second.
- 30:11Why would Jesus tell him not to be amazed?
- 30:15Was Nick supposed to know something about what Jesus had already said?
- 30:20Paul knew it writing Galatians.
- 30:23In verse 9 and 10, we see more here.
- 30:26Nick is exactly amazed saying in verse 9, how can these things be?
- 30:33In which Jesus says, are you a teacher of Israel and don't know these things?
- 30:39So before I get too far, let's get back to verse 8 because verses 11 and 12 will help
- 30:45us more here.
- 30:47Verse 8 says, the wind blows where it pleases.
- 30:51You hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it's going.
- 30:55So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
- 30:58Man, I hope I'm not losing you here with jumping around.
- 31:01However, it's not me.
- 31:02Jesus is telling Nick that the Holy Spirit could not be seen like the wind.
- 31:09He couldn't possibly know who could be born of the Spirit, which makes this such an amazing
- 31:16statement.
- 31:17Jesus was sitting right in front of him.
- 31:20He was born of the Spirit.
- 31:22Nick couldn't see it at all.
- 31:24It's crazy, right?
- 31:25It's a good way to look at it if you think about it.
- 31:27Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit and Nicodemus did not recognize that.
- 31:34He couldn't see it.
- 31:35But he says, we know that you're a man that comes from God because you couldn't do all
- 31:38of the things that you're doing unless you were from Him or with Him.
- 31:43He doesn't see Him as the physical representation.
- 31:48He didn't see or really know who Jesus was.
- 31:51Which was almost what I referred to back when we read in the verses about the first synoptic
- 31:57gospels how they wrote about Jesus and how John wrote about Jesus.
- 32:02They saw Jesus, but they didn't see Jesus.
- 32:07The disciples really figured out who He was when the Holy Spirit came.
- 32:12That's when it really set into them who Jesus really was.
- 32:17In verses all the different things, because you mentioned Thomas in the upper room.
- 32:21He touched Jesus and then he, boom, right then and there, he knew without a doubt.
- 32:26So now back to Nic in his amazement.
- 32:28Jesus tells Nic in verse 11, truly I tell you, now if anybody's been in church a long
- 32:34time when he says truly I tell you, he's really meaning something.
- 32:37We speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you do not accept our
- 32:44testimony.
- 32:45That's interesting.
- 32:46Who is we here?
- 32:48I was taught that Jesus referring to the disciples.
- 32:52However, none of the other disciples write anything about this stuff to testify about
- 32:57it.
- 32:59Could it be that the we here was actually Jesus and Lazarus?
- 33:04The only two that were possibly in the room that had any experience with being born again,
- 33:11aka reference to the resurrection, would be Lazarus and Jesus.
- 33:18The others that Jesus raised from the dead were not there.
- 33:22They were not in the room.
- 33:24This makes a direct example of Luke 16.31, but he told them if they don't listen to
- 33:31Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.
- 33:39Jesus already experienced Nic's response, so he knew they would not believe either.
- 33:46The interesting part about this book, and I guess Sarita, I have to ask a general question.
- 33:54Based on it being in chapter three in the book of John, do you think that was in Jesus'
- 34:01early ministry part, chronologically?
- 34:04I would say chronologically, yes.
- 34:09It feels like it would be because it's so early, right?
- 34:12It feels like he's just made this prophetic for God to live the world, this whole thing.
- 34:19It seems new.
- 34:21However, and I'm speculating here, and I was going to wait until the end, but I'm
- 34:28going to jump in right here.
- 34:31What if when Jesus stayed backwards at the back of the temple, and Mary and Joseph were
- 34:39there, he said, didn't you know I was in my father's house doing my father's business?
- 34:45What if he and Nicodemus and Lazarus struck up a friendship there?
- 34:50We're speculating.
- 34:51Oh, it's very possible.
- 34:52Let's speculate.
- 34:53Very possible.
- 34:54Let's speculate all the way out.
- 34:55Let's go.
- 34:56What if they, and so it was such a long way for them to go, what if they stayed with,
- 35:01like the family stayed with Mary and Martha?
- 35:03And Bethany.
- 35:04And Bethany, when they had to come, we don't know what he did other than 12 years old.
- 35:09Do we have any idea what the age difference between Jesus and?
- 35:13No, not really.
- 35:14No.
- 35:15Okay.
- 35:16Just curious.
- 35:17But I mean, if you look at the chosen, they're pretty close in age.
- 35:20Yeah.
- 35:21They were like, I mean, that's Dallas Jenkins.
- 35:23Lazarus.
- 35:24Lazarus and Jesus.
- 35:25You actually meet them there.
- 35:26They're very close to the same age.
- 35:27It's like they were childhood friends.
- 35:29But I would say that they knew each other for quite a while because of the familiarity
- 35:36of Mary and Martha.
- 35:38None of that time would not have been familiar with men like that.
- 35:43They run up and throw their arms around Jesus.
- 35:46They wash his feet with her hair, spend all that money.
- 35:50Judas gets all over her about it, the alabaster bottle and whatever.
- 35:55There's a familiarity.
- 35:56They've known him longer than the three years he was doing ministry on the earth.
- 36:02They've known him longer than that.
- 36:05I think Lazarus studied under Nicodemus.
- 36:10This is my speculation.
- 36:13And when Jesus went to the temple at 12, he was probably with him, maybe as friends, maybe
- 36:18they went, whatever.
- 36:20And when Jesus was preaching, teaching in the synagogue that day and they had to go
- 36:24back and find him, or how many other days it was until Mary and Joseph got back.
- 36:27It was three days.
- 36:28So yeah, three days, right?
- 36:32I think Nicodemus saw this young upstart and he might've even been the one that said,
- 36:38who is this?
- 36:39He's a kid.
- 36:40They marveled.
- 36:41They marveled at him.
- 36:43And I think it could have been Nicodemus then told, if we go with Lazarus wrote this, Nicodemus
- 36:49told Lazarus what the Pharisees or the Sanhedrin thought that day and then all the way through.
- 36:57Who knows how many times he did it again?
- 36:59He could have done it every time they went back to the temple for it because they had
- 37:02to go to Jerusalem once a year, right?
- 37:07So it could be that he went back and forth.
- 37:09I don't know.
- 37:10I'm speculating.
- 37:11I hope I didn't.
- 37:12His initial question was, do you think that this meeting was early in the chronological
- 37:15order?
- 37:16I say early-ish.
- 37:17Maybe more than a year in.
- 37:18But for him to be able to say, he's had to have heard because he's seen signs and
- 37:23wonders.
- 37:24We're only in chapter three, but he's already seen a bunch of signs and wonders.
- 37:26He's heard enough about them.
- 37:28Maybe if he's talking to Lazarus or whomever it was, maybe it was, you know, we know that
- 37:34you are someone come from God.
- 37:38I mean, let's see where he's going with this, but I don't necessarily believe it's too
- 37:46early.
- 37:47I think it might be ish.
- 37:48I think it might be later than we think.
- 37:50Not at the three years, but maybe not at the one year.
- 37:52It's at one day.
- 37:53Yeah, I definitely don't think it's in his first year.
- 37:55It's way past the water turning into wine thing.
- 37:59It's probably past.
- 38:00Yeah, because that happened in chapter two.
- 38:02It's probably past where he raises the widow's son.
- 38:06Because he's seen some kind of power that has made him stop and take notice that he's
- 38:12wanting to meet him in the dark and talk to him and really say, are you the Messiah?
- 38:17I have read about my whole life.
- 38:20Are you this guy?
- 38:22I've seen the signs and wonders.
- 38:24I'm going to say that I agree with you based on my old understanding that if you read the
- 38:30first three books, the first three synoptic gospels, they were written almost in a chronological
- 38:36order.
- 38:37So when you get to the fourth book, which is John, I took the assumption that the things
- 38:44that happened in John were almost in the same way.
- 38:47They were chronologically written.
- 38:50But if you look at verse 11, in order for Jesus to tell Nicodemus, he said, I truly
- 38:56tell you, we speak of what we know.
- 38:58And he's saying we, he's not saying I.
- 39:02We testify to what we have seen.
- 39:05That's not I, that's a we.
- 39:08But you do not accept our testimony in the you being Nicodemus.
- 39:12So in order for those we's to be included.
- 39:15Only Lazarus was Thomas's twin.
- 39:20Is that the conversation happened after Lazarus was raised again.
- 39:28It had to be later.
- 39:29It wasn't at the beginning.
- 39:32The only way that I know that we could do that is.
- 39:34I'll accept that.
- 39:35Okay.
- 39:36The only way that I would be able to accept it is if I could look at what feasts that
- 39:39they had, that they were going to, what was happening around the temple.
- 39:43And I think we're going to get into that, aren't we?
- 39:45I don't know if you do or not, but I know he does something at the temple, which is
- 39:49unusual.
- 39:50Now that's good enough to date something.
- 39:52It does.
- 39:53You date it.
- 39:54When he does this unusual thing at the temple, when you go back to the other chronological
- 39:57orders of when he did it, it sort of gives you the placement of where he's at in his
- 40:00ministry, because he's getting ready to do that.
- 40:03Yeah.
- 40:04Right?
- 40:05Yeah.
- 40:06He goes into.
- 40:07Well, we're not with John's books.
- 40:08I mean, I guess we can find it by looking at the other synoptics.
- 40:13But this conversation in itself is just not necessarily an anomaly, but based on what
- 40:20you have to dig what's in it.
- 40:22So I originally thought that it was in the beginning of his ministry, that as he was
- 40:28an upstart, young ministry guy starting off, he was starting to hit it off, that that's
- 40:35when this conversation happened.
- 40:37But based on that verse 11, it changes my thinking to think that it happened after Lazarus
- 40:44was raised again.
- 40:45So verse 12, for me, almost is like the last line in Act 1 before you go to intermission
- 40:51and a performance.
- 40:53Jesus says, if I have told you about earthly things and you don't believe, how will you
- 40:59believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
- 41:03The key word of this statement is what can throw you off the whole trail.
- 41:07The word if.
- 41:09Remember what Jesus said about parables?
- 41:13That he was blinding the people with his stories.
- 41:15However, I'm not sure if he's really doing this here with Nicodemus.
- 41:20I feel he was being very serious about what he was saying to him.
- 41:25I believe that everything that Jesus was telling him was about earthly things.
- 41:30He, being Jesus, was the kingdom and the door to the kingdom in the flesh.
- 41:36And he was telling him why he couldn't see it or what it could take or what it would
- 41:41take to see it.
- 41:43Then the second half of the statement kicks in.
- 41:46If Nicodemus was so amazed at how the start or at the start, how would he be able to understand
- 41:54what was coming?
- 41:56Because if he's amazed now, he's definitely going to be amazed now.
- 42:01I can completely understand that too.
- 42:04But all that Jesus says from this point should not have been a shock to a teacher of Nicodemus'
- 42:10stature.
- 42:11The next nine verses go directly to what Jesus said Nicodemus would possibly have difficulty
- 42:17in understanding.
- 42:18I see Jesus explaining the whole plot like we were in a comic book.
- 42:23The great thing about this one is that Jesus wasn't a villain.
- 42:27However, he was a power to be reckoned with.
- 42:31Jesus begins to reveal himself as the hidden figure that was spoken of so much in the Old
- 42:36Testament.
- 42:37Verse 13, No one has ascended to heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son
- 42:44of Man.
- 42:45Jesus is telling him that he's gone where no man has gone before.
- 42:50That alone could be a possible study.
- 42:54In verses 14 and 15, as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man
- 43:00must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
- 43:05Jesus is continuing to reveal himself as the antitype of the Old Testament.
- 43:11He is connecting to the book of Numbers, chapters 21, verses 4 through 9, which is just a six-verse
- 43:19event.
- 43:20Does anybody want to read that real quick?
- 43:22From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom,
- 43:27and the people became impatient on the way, and the people spoke against God and against
- 43:31Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?
- 43:35For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.
- 43:39Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many
- 43:43people of Israel died.
- 43:45And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the
- 43:49Lord and against you.
- 43:51Pray to the Lord that he take away the serpents from us.
- 43:54So Moses prayed for the people, and the Lord said to Moses, Make a fiery serpent and set
- 43:58it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.
- 44:03So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole, and if a serpent bit anyone, he
- 44:07would look at the bronze serpent and live.
- 44:09Thank you, sir.
- 44:10Remember that, Andy?
- 44:11We went through that one before in the past.
- 44:14The things that happened during this event seem to follow along with what Jesus is saying.
- 44:20The Jews spoke against God and Moses, a man that was a shadow of Jesus.
- 44:25Then judgment was sent against them.
- 44:27However, there was salvation for those that believed.
- 44:31Can you see it too?
- 44:33Yet now the salvation this time would come through him.
- 44:37Let us read the rest of this conversation through verse 21.
- 44:39Sarity, do you mind reading that if you could?
- 44:43For God loved the world in this way.
- 44:45He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have
- 44:49eternal life.
- 44:51For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
- 44:56through Him.
- 44:58Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already
- 45:03condemned because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
- 45:09This is the judgment.
- 45:11The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because
- 45:16their deeds were evil.
- 45:18For everyone who does evil hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be
- 45:23exposed.
- 45:24But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown
- 45:28to be accomplished by God.
- 45:31Did you hear the connection between numbers in here?
- 45:38It was almost like the Exodus again when the feeding of the 5,000 was explained as another
- 45:44Exodus.
- 45:46You can hear the connection.
- 45:48He says that in just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man
- 45:51should be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.
- 45:54The connection is similar in that the serpent that's on the pole, they have to look at it
- 46:00in order to not die from the bite.
- 46:03So when the Son of Man is lifted up, they have to look at it so they not die because
- 46:08of the sin.
- 46:10That's the connection.
- 46:11Excellent. So Nicodemus should not whatsoever be amazed by the statements of Jesus.
- 46:20Now I may be amazed that it's referring to him himself that's going to be raised up
- 46:25instead of another symbol, another entity, but it was actually going to be a person this
- 46:33time.
- 46:35That may have amazed him, but it should ring almost fresh in his ears if he was as studied
- 46:39of a man as he was.
- 46:43Much of this has a natural and spiritual reality.
- 46:47How much more did they talk about that we didn't even get to see?
- 46:52What did Jesus say to Nic about heavenly things, if any?
- 46:56Did they ever talk more than once?
- 46:59We don't know.
- 47:01Jesus and Nicodemus?
- 47:02Yes.
- 47:03No.
- 47:04We don't know.
- 47:05We don't know.
- 47:06It doesn't state it.
- 47:07What we do know is that in John 7 Nicodemus defends Jesus to the chief priests.
- 47:12Another conversation that in first you must ask who was there so that it could be written
- 47:18about.
- 47:19I feel Lazarus is the best fit due to his connections.
- 47:23Then in John 19 we see Nicodemus aids in the burial of Jesus with 75 pounds of spices,
- 47:30which is normally used in such amounts for royalty and leadership.
- 47:36So how do you feel?
- 47:37And he was with Joseph of Arimathea.
- 47:40So there were other Pharisees and Sadducees who believed Jesus was who he said he was
- 47:46or at least wanted to.
- 47:49And Joseph of Arimathea steps up and helps as well.
- 47:52So that's at least maybe three if you're counting Lazarus.
- 47:57We're not privy to how many actual religious leaders actually believe Jesus.
- 48:02Sure, and probably any of them that were at the time were trying their, I know a lot of
- 48:07cases to hide that fact.
- 48:08Guilty by association.
- 48:09We don't want any of that stuff now.
- 48:12No, yeah, sure.
- 48:13Yeah.
- 48:14I think that if we use, much like we did in our Adam study when we read the Bible and
- 48:18we see like, you know, I say that Adam was formed on the third day and everybody, you
- 48:25know, can agree or disagree, whatever.
- 48:26I just, I'm reading it like the Bible says it.
- 48:29But I think that Rick III has picked up on something is that the writer of the Gospel
- 48:35of John jumps around.
- 48:38He doesn't stick necessarily to a chronological order.
- 48:41I think that you have to take it within the context of the synoptics.
- 48:45This was the last gospel that was written in time.
- 48:48We know of it, Mark, Matthew, Luke, then John.
- 48:51At best we know he didn't really want to write one and he was heavily encouraged to do so.
- 48:57And I think that it's interesting because in John chapter 2 verse 15, he's cleansing
- 49:04the temple.
- 49:05Are you going to get into that here a little bit or are we?
- 49:07No, we're closing down.
- 49:09Good.
- 49:10So, in John chapter 2 verse 15, he's cleansing the temple.
- 49:12Do you know when Jesus cleanses the temple?
- 49:15Right before he's…
- 49:16At the triumphal entry.
- 49:18Yes.
- 49:19Why, what's happening at the triumphal entry?
- 49:20Remember…
- 49:21He's riding on a donkey.
- 49:22The synoptic gospels are not describing the fact that all of the people that were there
- 49:27were there to see Lazarus.
- 49:29In the book of John, it tells you that they're there to see Lazarus, the man who had been
- 49:34raised from the dead and that the Pharisees were going to kill him.
- 49:37So, it is quite possible, and this is going to be nuts, it is quite possible that the
- 49:45gospel of John the writer, if it is Lazarus, that what is happening on this very night
- 49:53is that the good man of the house who owned the house that was in Jerusalem could have
- 50:00been Lazarus or it could have been Nicodemus, but it's on the same night when he's in
- 50:05Jerusalem at the triumphal entry.
- 50:07I would say that it's very possible that when he's talking to Nicodemus, it's honestly
- 50:13the same night that he's about to have Passover because it is Passover.
- 50:21That's when he comes into the city.
- 50:22Could it have been Joseph of Arimathea's house?
- 50:24It could have been.
- 50:25It's speculative, but I think that the fact that Nicodemus came and that Jesus sent the
- 50:31disciples to this place, they knew who Lazarus was.
- 50:36Lazarus is their friend.
- 50:38They knew him.
- 50:39So let me get, there was something that you said about being born again, and we referenced
- 50:46these, and I referred to going back to the study of John where being that Lazarus wrote
- 50:53this book, he did his best to hide himself because he was becoming, just as you stated,
- 50:59so famous that they were wanting to kill him.
- 51:01Not only that, but he's going to be the one that's going to take care of his mother.
- 51:04Yes, right.
- 51:05So…
- 51:06Because it says in the Bible, in the synoptics, all of the other disciples ran away, they
- 51:10fled, but yet the disciple whom Jesus loved was at the foot of the cross.
- 51:14So that makes him a very unique person because he can't have your cake and eat it too.
- 51:19Either the disciples fled or they didn't.
- 51:22In other words, the disciple whom Jesus loved wasn't one of the twelve.
- 51:26He longed to be with the twelve on that night when he had that last supper Passover.
- 51:31He even says that, I've longed to have this private time with you, right?
- 51:36But that doesn't mean that that's the only ones that are there because you've got the
- 51:40man with the water pot and the good man of the house who owns the house.
- 51:45It's probably Lazarus.
- 51:46Martha owns the other house in Bethany.
- 51:49Lazarus is part of the priest line.
- 51:51He's in Jerusalem.
- 51:53So I think that what's happening is that you're getting a first eyewitness account
- 51:57that's been given to someone else to write.
- 52:00It could have been the apostle John, but I doubt it.
- 52:02He didn't write in Ko-ni Greek, like really high Ko-ni Greek.
- 52:05He was a fisherman, guys.
- 52:06Now maybe he learned it and he got better at it.
- 52:08I don't know.
- 52:09I don't see how.
- 52:10He was watching the apostle John all the time, you know, and he technically the apostle John
- 52:13was watching after the mother.
- 52:15That's not true.
- 52:16He couldn't have been.
- 52:17He was at Ephesus.
- 52:19He was in Ephesus.
- 52:20We know that historically he was in Ephesus.
- 52:23So I think, I think you nailed it.
- 52:25I think that John three is nothing more than a story that is giving you the plot line like
- 52:32a comic book.
- 52:33Yes.
- 52:34It's almost like a Quentin Tarantino film.
- 52:36He's using this out is a pulp fiction.
- 52:39He's using this out of order discussion and don't go watch that movie.
- 52:42Please don't watch it.
- 52:44What are you talking about?
- 52:45It's an amazing movie.
- 52:46It's a great movie, but just make sure if you have it beep all the words, you'll never
- 52:49hear any language.
- 52:50Oh yeah.
- 52:51It's awful that way.
- 52:52But it's like telling a story non-linear.
- 52:54Never seen it.
- 52:55Really?
- 52:56Look at his face.
- 52:57It's an amazing movie, but if a Joe Rogan episode frequently has too much swearing for
- 53:03you, then it might not be your thing.
- 53:04You're not going to like Quentin Tarantino, but Quentin Tarantino does a lot in pulp fiction.
- 53:08It is non-linear storytelling, which is what I did in Stillwater.
- 53:12I don't know if you guys knew that or not, but it was a test of non-linear writing.
- 53:17I think that the Gospel of John is a non-linear book.
- 53:21That's why people can't rectify it.
- 53:22They think, what's going on in John chapter two?
- 53:25It's happening really early in the ministry that he's in there whipping the people in
- 53:29the temple.
- 53:30That doesn't match the other synoptics.
- 53:31Yes, it does.
- 53:32If you put it in its time, then you understand how the author is writing the story.
- 53:37He's telling you much later what's actually happening.
- 53:43And then it makes sense that Nicodemus is very aware of what's happening to Jesus.
- 53:47He's already heard about the signs and wonders.
- 53:50We hear about it again in chapter seven, which actually happened before what happens in chapter
- 53:54three.
- 53:55Do you see it's non-linear?
- 53:56Yes.
- 53:57But then if you do that, you can actually reconcile all of these verses.
- 54:01It's not contradicting itself whatsoever.
- 54:04It's like when you tell a story.
- 54:07They'll be telling the story and then, oh, you know what?
- 54:10I need to go back to this or gosh, four days later, I mean, I really need to talk about
- 54:15this.
- 54:16We don't necessarily tell stories like always in a linear fashion.
- 54:21If I'm telling my testimony, I typically do, but I might be telling my testimony and something
- 54:26pops into my mind and I'm like, oh, but did I mention this?
- 54:31And I go backwards for a few years where I had gone, I was 21 versus 16.
- 54:36And then I go back to 30.
- 54:38That's just how we speak and whoever either wrote it down for him or himself didn't fix
- 54:48the timeline, if you will.
- 54:50I mean, you know it's a different book.
- 54:51He comes right out and says it right at the beginning.
- 54:54In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.
- 54:58Well, all the other synoptics don't get anywhere near that.
- 55:01It's a very high Christological book.
- 55:02He knows something about this Jesus that the other ones didn't because he's seen something
- 55:08that the other ones didn't.
- 55:10John the Baptist was not that light.
- 55:13Jesus Christ in him was the light and his light was the light of men.
- 55:18What is he talking about?
- 55:20Well, where was Lazarus when he was dead?
- 55:23He wasn't in the light, but he was brought back to the light because Christ is the light
- 55:28of the world.
- 55:30And where do you learn that?
- 55:31In the Gospel of John.
- 55:32Yes, and the cook your noodle just a tiny bit longer.
- 55:37In verse 3 and in verse 5, two of the biggest verses that we consider spiritual rebirth
- 55:44are being born again.
- 55:47But John writes that Jesus says, truly I tell you, unless someone is born again, he cannot
- 55:52see the kingdom of God.
- 55:54That's right.
- 55:55I have speculation highly here because I feel that the someone that he's referring to in
- 56:03that moment in that statement is Lazarus taking his name out of that.
- 56:08Yeah, and that's fair.
- 56:12So you also have to remember the time frame here.
- 56:14This is prior to the crucifixion.
- 56:16This is prior to the burial, the resurrection.
- 56:20At the crucifixion, Nicodemus comes and helps after the fact and takes his body down.
- 56:25Same day, within minutes of his death, same day, before the sun goes down, Nicodemus is
- 56:30there.
- 56:31Him and Joseph of Arimathea are taking the body down and then the burial spices for a
- 56:35king are given to him by Nicodemus.
- 56:37All of this is happening within just a few hours, a few hours from the time that he's
- 56:42been crucified.
- 56:44So Lazarus is there.
- 56:47He's the one that's giving the eyewitness account of all of this stuff.
- 56:50Lazarus never left.
- 56:52He's been there the whole time.
- 56:54It's not the Apostle John.
- 56:56No.
- 56:57And don't let that hurt you.
- 56:59Why, oh, why would you let it hurt you?
- 57:01Because you've heard of John the Beloved, he was the sons of thunder, and so now Christ
- 57:05did a work in his heart and he became loving.
- 57:07Yeah, that's what Christ does to all of us.
- 57:10He takes and we become a work of Jesus' art.
- 57:14That's what happens.
- 57:15And spiritual rebirth is something that happens.
- 57:19You won't know the kingdom of God.
- 57:20Remember the round table when I asked Gary DeMar, I said, are we in the kingdom of God
- 57:23now?
- 57:24Yes.
- 57:25The answer was yes.
- 57:26How do you know?
- 57:28Well, because he's been born again and he believes the word of God.
- 57:32We have a spiritual rebirth.
- 57:34We were dead in trespasses and sins, but we have the ability to see the kingdom of God
- 57:38even today because of our rebirth.
- 57:39We understand it and we all speak to it.
- 57:44So I think that it's not a problem that it's not John the Apostle.
- 57:49It doesn't bother me.
- 57:51I don't know why it bothers some people.
- 57:52It does.
- 57:53People get all bent out of shape.
- 57:54Did you get a lot of hate mail for that one?
- 57:56Yeah, because it messes up the narrative.
- 57:58You have this narrative, the gospel according to John is the beloved.
- 58:02It messes up the Last Supper picture.
- 58:05It does because it makes you think that it's John.
- 58:08But John does not have inner access.
- 58:09He doesn't have any of that.
- 58:12John didn't set up the meeting in Jerusalem between Nicodemus and them.
- 58:14There's no way.
- 58:15He didn't have any access.
- 58:17John was a fisherman.
- 58:19John worked on the Sea of Galilee.
- 58:21He had nothing to do with the temple other than when it was time to go and do his sacrifice.
- 58:25That's it.
- 58:26Any other time he was working and probably on Shabbat, you know, onto the Sabbath.
- 58:33But he shouldn't have been, but he was, I'm sure just like Peter and all of them were.
- 58:36But they had this narrative that's been passed down from generation to generation to generation.
- 58:43And they say, you know, this is was John the beloved.
- 58:47But guys, it doesn't work in the text.
- 58:50It just doesn't.
- 58:51I would much rather believe what the Bible says than what history says.
- 58:56I just would.
- 58:57I think it's fascinating.
- 58:59It doesn't change what I believe about Jesus.
- 59:02What he did is sacrifice his death on the cross, his resurrection.
- 59:05That doesn't change anything.
- 59:06No matter if John Martin the 14th wrote it, I don't know.
- 59:14To me, it makes sense the way you explain it.
- 59:16Not everything that, you know, like we say, we don't always believe everything that other
- 59:22people say in here.
- 59:24But it's at least worth having the discussion.
- 59:26I mean, we've just gotten so far down church tradition that heaven forbid you challenge
- 59:33the narrative.
- 59:34Yep.
- 59:35Challenging the narrative.
- 59:36And you have to be born of the Spirit.
- 59:38And Jesus made it very clear.
- 59:40It's like the wind.
- 59:41You don't know.
- 59:42You just don't know.
- 59:43We live in a time where people can be born of the Spirit.
- 59:47We live in that time.
- 59:49This was not the case prior to.
- 59:52It was after the fact, after Pentecost, when the Spirit came.
- 59:56That's when it began.
- 59:57And they were baptizing people.
- 59:59And just remember what happened to John the Baptist's disciples.
- 1:00:02Remember, there were people who had been baptized, but they never received the Holy Spirit.
- 1:00:05And Paul happens across them.
- 1:00:07And then he was like, oh, so they do the laying off hands and they baptize them in the name
- 1:00:10of Jesus.
- 1:00:11And then suddenly they begin to speak in tongues and prophecy and do all these things.
- 1:00:14They were born of the Spirit.
- 1:00:15Do you remember that?
- 1:00:16Yes, but I didn't get no speaking.
- 1:00:19I didn't either.
- 1:00:20I don't have the gift.
- 1:00:21I can speak Spanish.
- 1:00:22Well, you can speak a tongue then.
- 1:00:23Okay.
- 1:00:24There you go.
- 1:00:25I can speak German.
- 1:00:27So you can speak in tongues.
- 1:00:28Ik habe engrossed kopf.
- 1:00:31You have a big head.
- 1:00:34I can speak in ob a little bit.
- 1:00:36Yeah.
- 1:00:37Yeah.
- 1:00:38Where are you?
- 1:00:39I can speak in piglet.
- 1:00:40Yeah, I'm like piglet.
- 1:00:41Okay.
- 1:00:42Yeah.
- 1:00:43I said dabo.
- 1:00:44You are wawak thrabu daba dabo.
- 1:00:47That sounds like something on Star Wars.
- 1:00:49It does kind of.
- 1:00:50Jawa-waki.
- 1:00:51Yeah.
- 1:00:52I don't even know how to say Jabawaki.
- 1:00:55So everybody.
- 1:00:56That was good, man.
- 1:00:57Oh, but maybe we should title this one, Who Wrote the Gospel of John, episode four or
- 1:01:02five, whatever we were.
- 1:01:04Holy moly, Nicodemus.
- 1:01:05It could do that too, yeah.
- 1:01:07Yeah, just a continuation.
- 1:01:09Yeah.
- 1:01:10I don't know why it's a threat, but it makes total sense to me that they hid his identity
- 1:01:16for who he was and what was going on.
- 1:01:18And the fact that everybody, all the disciples, remember, whenever he says that the rocks
- 1:01:24would cry out if you make them quiet, it wasn't just random people.
- 1:01:27It was Jesus' disciples that he was talking about.
- 1:01:30All of the, not 12, but the thousands.
- 1:01:33All of them.
- 1:01:34All of them that were coming.
- 1:01:35Waving.
- 1:01:36Yes.
- 1:01:37And they were there to see the dead man that had been raised.
- 1:01:42So that's why the Gospel of John is telling you all of these things.
- 1:01:45This is the greatest show on earth.
- 1:01:48With some hidden elements to it, that Lazarus is trying to hide himself, hide names in a
- 1:01:55way so that the people at their time, it would kind of obscure him.
- 1:02:01Yeah.
- 1:02:02And it makes perfect sense too when you get into the end of the Gospel of John that it
- 1:02:06actually names James and John, the sons of thunder, in the boat and two other disciples.
- 1:02:13And then you find out that one of those other disciples was the disciple whom Jesus loved.
- 1:02:18I just want to say that it is the crime against humanity that the sons of thunder is not a
- 1:02:23tag team group, a wrestling group.
- 1:02:26It sounds like a couple of guys that drive for like children's racing or something, you
- 1:02:30know?
- 1:02:31Yeah.
- 1:02:32The days of thunder, son.
- 1:02:33Sons of thunder.
- 1:02:34Sons of thunder.
- 1:02:35Very good, man.
- 1:02:36Well, I'm glad you all enjoyed it.
- 1:02:37I enjoyed that study.
- 1:02:38Thank you, sir.
- 1:02:39You?
- 1:02:40Hope it was a-
- 1:02:41Yes, sir.
- 1:02:42And well, guys, and we'll see you next time on the Boroughs of Berea.
- 1:02:48Peace out.
- 1:02:49Bye, y'all.
- 1:02:50Later.
- 1:02:51Hey guys, this is Rick from the Boroughs of Berea.
- 1:02:54Do you know how much blood, sweat, and tears it takes to make a podcast?
- 1:02:59None.
- 1:03:01But that doesn't mean that it doesn't cost a lot.
- 1:03:02And so if you guys don't mind, if you'd like to give to help us with these episodes, it
- 1:03:06would be great.

- 1:03:17A dollar gets you a lot.
- 1:03:19Thanks guys.
- 1:03:22Nicodemus, Nicodemus.
- 1:03:26Nicodemus, Nicodemus.
- 1:03:29That means I don't have to go to the grocery store.
- 1:03:34I'm so good at song craft.
- 1:03:37You are.
- 1:03:38You should be in a band.
- 1:03:39Well, that's all you do.
- 1:03:40That's all you do is talk about songs.
- 1:03:41How many instruments do you play?
- 1:03:44Oh, I mean a lot of them, mediocrely.
- 1:03:46It's not important that I'm particularly good at instruments.
- 1:03:52What's important is that I know how they should be played, honestly.
- 1:03:55This is one of those things.
- 1:03:56Definitely have an ear for it, for sure.
- 1:03:58I know when somebody has bad guitar technique and I can tell them how to correct it, whether
- 1:04:04they're doing things that are more complicated than what I can actually do, I can still instruct
- 1:04:08them how to do that better.
- 1:04:10Wow.
- 1:04:11Even though I don't need to be able to play a really fast sweep solo, but I need to be
- 1:04:14able to know what somebody's doing wrong when they're doing it wrong and be able to instruct
- 1:04:18them on how to not do that.
- 1:04:21Awesome.
- 1:04:24I'm going to have these dogs flown to space.
- 1:04:27They keep going in and out.
- 1:04:29Call Elon Musk.
- 1:04:30I'm sure he put him up there.
- 1:04:31Yeah, right?
- 1:04:32He's got the means.
- 1:04:33Sir, can I borrow a rocket?
- 1:04:35What's his name?
- 1:04:36Cooper?
- 1:04:37The virgin guy?
- 1:04:38Oh, God.
- 1:04:39Ste...
- 1:04:40Yeah, I can't remember.
- 1:04:41He's got that big blonde floopy hair.
- 1:04:45Fluffy hair, yeah.
- 1:04:46He also owns those boats.
- 1:04:48He has the adult only cruises.
- 1:04:50Is that what he does?
- 1:04:51I didn't know that one.
- 1:04:53Richard.
- 1:04:54Is that it, Richard?
- 1:04:55Richard.
- 1:04:56I'm going to go to Google.
- 1:05:00To Google.
- 1:05:01You got the chills because it is getting cold.
- 1:05:07You getting cold?
- 1:05:08I turned the air on.
- 1:05:09That was hot.
- 1:05:10Oh, did you?
- 1:05:11Okay.
- 1:05:12Yeah.
- 1:05:13Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:14Yeah, it's starting to chill down in here.
- 1:05:15This melts the mind.
- 1:05:16Are you ready?
- 1:05:17Yeah, I worked.
- 1:05:18Richard Branson.
- 1:05:19Richard Branson.
- 1:05:20There it is.
- 1:05:21Oh, okay.
- 1:05:22The virgin guy?
- 1:05:23Yeah, the virgin guy.
- 1:05:24I was just saying that.
- 1:05:25Richard, I couldn't think of the last name.
- 1:05:26I was like, Richard something.
- 1:05:27We ought to take a GoFundMe for David Curtis to get on Virgin and see the curvature of the
- 1:05:34earth.
- 1:05:35You can't go high enough in a plane to see the curvature of the earth.
- 1:05:40You have to go higher than that.
- 1:05:41That's what Neil Greisen, Neil, what's his name?
- 1:05:45Gosh.
- 1:05:46DeGrasse Tyson.
- 1:05:47DeGrasse Tyson, yes.
- 1:05:48You have to go real high to start seeing the curvature.
- 1:05:51The earth is big.
- 1:05:52Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:53I get you.
- 1:05:54I still see enough of it.
- 1:05:55It's a jack-and-it-ball-of-glass.
- 1:05:56You might be able to see it a little bit if it's from the top of one of those planes.
- 1:06:01They actually get to space in that rocket when they launch it from a plane and then
- 1:06:06it rockets up.
- 1:06:07Do they?
- 1:06:08Do they actually get all the way out of the atmosphere?
- 1:06:09Does Jeff Space's penis rocket get up there?
- 1:06:11Yes.
- 1:06:12I thought the plane just skimmed the top of the...
- 1:06:17Well, it gets to that point.
- 1:06:18It has to because then the air breaks itself down.
- 1:06:21I would almost feel that you would be able to see it.
- 1:06:24See the curvature?
- 1:06:25Yeah.
- 1:06:26You know what?
- 1:06:27That's a legit question.
- 1:06:28How high do you need to be to see the curvature of the earth?
- 1:06:30There's got to be an answer to that question.
- 1:06:31It's an answerable question.
- 1:06:32Did that white balloon that got shot down in South Carolina, did that one see the curvature
- 1:06:36of the earth?
- 1:06:37Yeah, South Carolina.
- 1:06:38That's right.
- 1:06:39Yeah.
- 1:06:40And we just had a hovercraft land on the beach this week.
- 1:06:45Yes.
- 1:06:46It was awesome.
- 1:06:47That's cool.
- 1:06:48Like a military hovercraft?
- 1:06:49Yeah.
- 1:06:50It landed on the Navy, landed on North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, resupplied.
- 1:06:55I don't know what they got.
- 1:06:56They must have needed a margarita or something.
- 1:06:58They went back out to sea.
- 1:07:00People were standing there filming it and this thing's like...
- 1:07:04It sounded just like that too.
- 1:07:05It did really do.
- 1:07:06It was got to go.
- 1:07:08I had an uncle when I was a kid.
- 1:07:10He built a personal hovercraft out of two vacuum cleaner motors.
- 1:07:14Oh, wow.
- 1:07:15Downforce and a skirt.
- 1:07:16Nice.
- 1:07:17It could go over hills and stuff, but a single not big person could sit in it and you could
- 1:07:22push it around and just float around.
- 1:07:24That's cool.
- 1:07:25I've always wanted one of those hovercraft things.
- 1:07:27You could just buy the silly things.
- 1:07:30They're dangerous because they don't turn like a car.
- 1:07:34So you have to be very careful because the whole momentum thing will get you.
- 1:07:38But you can just buy the things and they look fun.
- 1:07:41They make racing versions.
- 1:07:42Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:43That would be cool.
- 1:07:44That have...
- 1:07:45All right.
- 1:07:46I'm going to go ahead and put it down here.
- 1:07:47All right.
- 1:07:48Yeah.
- 1:07:49Not you, Rick.
- 1:07:50The other way.
- 1:07:51Let's get Rick.
- 1:07:52I'd like them both to leave.
- 1:07:53He has...
- 1:07:54Can I stay?
- 1:07:55Yeah, of course you can stay.
- 1:07:56I can stay?
- 1:07:57Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:58Absolutely.
- 1:07:59How did you like how Billy said cherry and serena and I said the hotties and TZN?
- 1:08:04I was like, I'm in the room.
- 1:08:06If you can play this, I'm not allowed to say it, but TZN is so fine.
- 1:08:11Let's just be real.
- 1:08:12She's so fine and we're just saying it.
- 1:08:14My wife is going to punch me in the throat when I get home.
- 1:08:15I'll cut it out.
- 1:08:16I'll save your...
- 1:08:17Don't cut it out.
- 1:08:18Leave it in there for her.
- 1:08:19All right.
- 1:08:20All right.
- 1:08:21My wife is hot.
- 1:08:22I have no opinion on that.
- 1:08:23My wife is crazy hot.
- 1:08:24I chased after her for a long time.
- 1:08:25Your wife is very pretty.
- 1:08:26She is.
- 1:08:27Congratulations.
- 1:08:28Thank you.
- 1:08:29Cherry is very pretty and TZN is very pretty.
- 1:08:30I think I'm starting to lose my mind.
- 1:08:31I think my temperature is elevating.
- 1:08:32Can you tell?
- 1:08:33And Rick the third is very pretty.
- 1:08:34I mean, I can hear it in your... Oh, that's the dip.
- 1:08:37I was going to say I can hear it in your voice, but that's the dip.
- 1:08:40I'm going to leave it in too.
- 1:08:42Go for it.
- 1:08:43Go for it.
- 1:08:44Go for your sufferance, suffer how you'd please.
- 1:08:46That's right.
- 1:08:47I'm going to leave it in too.
