- 1:26The. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 1:49Corner podcast. Along with my partners, Brian
- 1:52Sieglen, Jonathan Talley, I am Curtis Wilson.
- 1:55We are part of the College Huddle Network and we are
- 1:58brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts, our favorite pharmacist
- 2:03down at Counts Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood
- 2:05pharmacy, three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 2:08Welcome back, gentlemen, to the new year.
- 2:11New year, everybody. New Year's same me.
- 2:16I'm just here. I don't know if I'm the old me,
- 2:19the new me, somewhere in between.
- 2:22Yeah, it's been. I started a new job the day
- 2:25after New Year's. I guess that.
- 2:27That could. That could.
- 2:27Technically, be fun. That is fun.
- 2:31We I had we had hell week last week down here in Richmond, man
- 2:35Tally got to hear all about power going out, Internet going
- 2:38out. Brian can't take showers.
- 2:40We got bowl water. I had to.
- 2:44Build snow so I could flush my toilets.
- 2:47That's crazy. We got apocalyptic down here for
- 2:49a couple. Days.
- 2:49That's crazy. It was wild, man.
- 2:52I mean, what happens when it snows in the South and then it
- 2:56doesn't warm up the next two days afterwards?
- 2:58Yeah. And your water plant has a
- 3:01catastrophic failure, you know. Yeah.
- 3:04Wow, that happened. We had some snow for one day,
- 3:06but it wasn't, it didn't get bad.
- 3:08So you know, it's like one day and even like it.
- 3:12The day before I walked outside and I had short sleeves on.
- 3:16I was like, it's like 50° out here.
- 3:18This ain't this is going to be crazy.
- 3:21And then the next day, like I go to sleep and wake up, it's like
- 3:246 inches of snow. Oh yeah, well the whole thing
- 3:28is, did y'all have the day after the snow it got warm again.
- 3:31Yeah, then I was going to say the next day it was just like,
- 3:34my wife is in healthcare, so they had already told him like,
- 3:39you can't miss work, It's going to snow.
- 3:41We know for a fact it's snowing. You need to be at work.
- 3:44So this was just say like a Thursday, she had to get a hotel
- 3:47room, her and another lady that she works, we got a hotel room
- 3:50that's close to the hospital. So she had to stay there.
- 3:53And then the next night she works at, she helps out at a
- 3:57retirement home that's close to the home to our house.
- 4:00And I was telling, I was like, Hey, you can come home.
- 4:03I'll come get you. Because we got a, a group around
- 4:05here, a Wrangler group called the rocket City Wranglers.
- 4:08Shout out to them. And during stuff like that, they
- 4:12just get out. It's like, I don't know, maybe
- 4:14fifty of them. And you can book them and
- 4:16they'll come get you and, you know, take you to the store if
- 4:19they need to. But they definitely help with
- 4:21the healthcare workers. So they was getting the, getting
- 4:24the nurses to and from home if they needed to.
- 4:27And I told her I was like, you can come home.
- 4:30It's not going to be bad. She's like, I'm it's, it's a big
- 4:32hill and I'm going to just go ahead and stay.
- 4:34So she ended up staying at the retirement home the next night
- 4:38and woke up and it's nothing. It's like a dust, a dust
- 4:44outside. But you just never know in
- 4:46Alabama, man. When you get some ice and snow,
- 4:49The main thing is these fuckers can't drive.
- 4:52Like I don't try to drive. I'm, I'm these fuckers as well.
- 4:56Like I don't try to drive in it. But you got some people because
- 4:59Huntsville is so crazy and people are from like all over.
- 5:03They come here and they're like, Oh, I grew up in this.
- 5:05And then they, they don't realize that the roads ain't set
- 5:09up the same way as if you came from the north or, you know,
- 5:12they, they, they don't come in ice.
- 5:14I mean, they don't come salt the roads and things like that.
- 5:16So you get people sliding all over the place.
- 5:20Yeah, I like what you said right there.
- 5:23You might have driven it elsewhere, but the roads down
- 5:26here was not made for you to be snowed in and attempting to
- 5:31drive on it. So that's the good pieces, but.
- 5:34They're not treated properly. They're not built that way.
- 5:37It's not. It's not designed for that type
- 5:39of traversal. It is not designed, but you
- 5:42know, we're back to reality. We're back to somewhat normal
- 5:45January now and it has been a little over two weeks since we
- 5:49all got together in person. Obviously we can.
- 5:52We we, we pretty much just talk everyday via message, sometimes
- 5:56phone call here they so we're always communicating.
- 5:59But we got a lot to unload because since that point in
- 6:02time, we had the bowl game, tons of portal stuff.
- 6:06No new coaches let's we won't get into that in a little while.
- 6:10But let's start off with the the news that broke this afternoon.
- 6:14I'm sure y'all all saw it. A huge congratulation as Michael
- 6:17Vick will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame
- 6:21this year. Definitely well worth it.
- 6:25I, I didn't even know he was on the ballot personally so I
- 6:29didn't and it just popped up. I think I saw Andy Bitter and it
- 6:32was like Michael's Hall of Famer.
- 6:33Like, yes, he should be a Hall of Famer without a doubt.
- 6:37Right. It's like when you go and I,
- 6:42I'll talk to my son about some stuff and you got so many
- 6:44different errors and something. If you put somebody in a sports
- 6:47era and you remove them or they, they play in a sports area and
- 6:52you remove them from that era, does it change the game?
- 6:55You know, does it their, you know, their, their career, what
- 7:00they've done? Did it have an impact from the
- 7:03game? It changes the game.
- 7:05And when you think about Michael Vick and what he did in the
- 7:08game, like even outside the game, the culture that he
- 7:11created outside of the game changed everything.
- 7:14You go to basketball, you think about AI like they change rules.
- 7:18There's like, oh, we got to dress up because we don't like
- 7:21the way he dressed on the sidelines.
- 7:22I mean, AI had little white boys with their hair braided.
- 7:25Like it's just when you have somebody that impacts the game
- 7:29like that, like, come on, man. And then they got stats to go
- 7:32with it. You got to be a Hall of Famer.
- 7:35Nothing else to talk about. So don't get no crazy ideas.
- 7:38None of you crazy people out there that say the man don't
- 7:41deserve it because he do. I'm going to leave it at that.
- 7:45Brian, what you think? Yeah.
- 7:47I mean, this has been to me a long time coming.
- 7:49I mean, if we're looking at just the 99 team alone, I mean, it's
- 7:54it's really, yeah, I'm shocked. He's the third induction from
- 7:59the 99 team and not the at least the second.
- 8:03Corey Moore really being the only other one that you could
- 8:05say from a college football impact, might, might have had an
- 8:10equal or greater impact during his time in Blacksburg and
- 8:14during his time playing college football.
- 8:16Obviously, when we talk about Michael Vick's legacy, we're
- 8:19talking about a legacy that does transcend college football.
- 8:22But Tally, to your point, you know, what Mike did at
- 8:27quarterback at Virginia Tech, it definitely had an impact on the
- 8:33game. It changed the way I think a lot
- 8:35of people viewed the quarterback position and what it could be
- 8:40from a combination of athletic ability and arm talent.
- 8:44Right. And so I think it's well
- 8:47deserved. And Curtis, I'm I'm gonna pitch
- 8:49it to you, man. What you think?
- 8:50Well, I mean, like you said, it's it's a long time coming and
- 8:54where you see what Michael Vick is the effects of what we see
- 8:57now take a look this weekend, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson and I
- 9:02know Josh Allen's white, but Josh Allen, big athletic kid,
- 9:06fast, strong arm. They're super athletic
- 9:09quarterbacks. And that was Michael.
- 9:12Before Michael, though, no one had like the arm.
- 9:15And when I say the arm, Michael could make every throw.
- 9:18Michael knew how to do touch. Michael could throw bombs.
- 9:21I'm still the prettiest ball I've ever seen.
- 9:23And this is him in the NFL. Was that bomb to DeSean Jackson
- 9:26from the two skins? Oh my God.
- 9:29Or somebody Andre Davis stuff. He just he flips it his legacy.
- 9:33It's it's now 25 years, 26 years, Lord have mercy later.
- 9:39It is now a direct impact on the entire game of football, the
- 9:43entire game of football. And it's well deserved and so
- 9:48glad for him. You know, huge Congrats, Michael
- 9:52Vick out there. Dwight, I forgot to text you
- 9:55today when I saw it. I'll text you later to say
- 9:58Congrats so you can pass that on and, and good for him with the
- 10:01coaching job. Just, you know, one of those
- 10:03great things. So really happy for him.
- 10:06Real quick, let's flip to something else before we hit the
- 10:09Mayo ball. Do y'all believe we won two
- 10:10basketball games in a row? Pretty good want to get some
- 10:15some solid competition one against, you know, I'd say NC
- 10:18State's kind of a a mid level to kind of low, you know, lower end
- 10:22of the ACC. But at the same time, you know,
- 10:25when we were looking at this roster, we were like two, maybe
- 10:303 ACC wins total. And, you know, you're kind of
- 10:34already hitting that, you know, this early in January and.
- 10:39They hit it. I didn't watch a game tonight.
- 10:42I thought it was. Going to be a very long ACC
- 10:44regular season so. I've only watched one.
- 10:46I've only watched one game and that was enough for me.
- 10:49I said I ain't watching none of this shit.
- 10:52Like I just thought it was going to be super bad.
- 10:54And it again, I go back and forth with people online all the
- 10:59time and I never said Mike Young can't coach because he can't
- 11:03Like, he is a old school coach. He knows what he's doing.
- 11:08He can coach. But my thing on him is the
- 11:12retaining of talent. To get to the top of the ACC,
- 11:18you have to have big guards that can play defense, long guards
- 11:23that can shoot, you know, because when you got to think
- 11:26you're going to get most of the time UNC and Duke, and that's
- 11:31going to be, that's a rough go at it.
- 11:33You know, you can throw other teams in there as well.
- 11:35You know, I know Virginia's coach left, but Virginia always
- 11:38has a good team and you got to be able to have the talent to
- 11:42play with those teams. Just being able to coach a lot
- 11:45of time that can get you to that next level in the ACC.
- 11:49Maybe mid major shirt, but here it's tough.
- 11:52So shout out to Mike Young for his coaching job because he is a
- 11:55hell of a coach. I have to give him his props.
- 11:58I don't know if people think that I think he can't coach.
- 12:01He can coach. I just yeah, I just like I said
- 12:06that the talent in it, he's Got Talent.
- 12:08He has got it and I never said he hadn't got it.
- 12:11I think he can recruit pretty good, but it's the retaining of
- 12:14talent and people say Oh well, it's the NIL or is this this was
- 12:18happening before that. So he was in my opinion, but I
- 12:22didn't mean to go on that rant. No, I wanted to say that I
- 12:26respect Mike Young for what he does.
- 12:29When he gets, hey, he'll put some people out there and he can
- 12:31run some XS and OS and the dude can coach.
- 12:35I got to give him his props. But to your point tally is what
- 12:38you talk about the retaining and that's usually where the old
- 12:40school coaches lose it. It's in the offseason, it's
- 12:43wrong, and I'm sure, I'm sure Mike ain't no slouching the
- 12:46offseason running those guys through drills and shit.
- 12:48I'm sure you probably hammers them.
- 12:51And. We we're in a day and age, kids
- 12:53don't like that shit. It's easy to transfer.
- 12:56And so it's one of those things is for Mike Young because to be
- 13:02honest, he probably ain't going anywhere in the next three or
- 13:04four years. Just the way everything's set
- 13:06up. If, if, if you don't like Mike
- 13:08Young, you got to deal with him. But can he find somebody to
- 13:14bring in to almost smooth a little bit?
- 13:18Like Coach, we know you want to work on more, but you've got to
- 13:21you got to tone it down just a little bit so they don't leave,
- 13:25so you can carry over because as these guys learn your system.
- 13:29Why did he not bump off some people at Wofford?
- 13:32Those guys have been with him four and five years.
- 13:34They it was clockwork. They knew exactly what to do in,
- 13:39you know, you take somebody like Lawal, who's he that, that, that
- 13:42might be one of the most athletic kids that's ever played
- 13:44at Virginia Tech, straight up. Unbelievable.
- 13:47So just let's find my young an offseason guru that can help him
- 13:53not lose people, that's all. But I don't know if it's like,
- 13:57you know, I know his at times the system can be a little rigid
- 14:01for some guys that are a little bit better at creating their own
- 14:05shot and things like that. So I don't know if if some of
- 14:08that is what is chasing folks off.
- 14:11I don't know if to Curtis's point, some of the offseason
- 14:13stuff, I don't know if it's just, you know, new age and
- 14:19opportunities are presenting themselves.
- 14:20And I'm not talking about necessarily NIL, but I mean,
- 14:23with the transfer portal, you, you get to look at opportunities
- 14:27that may not have presented themselves when you committed to
- 14:29Virginia Tech and that may be where you wanted to be to begin
- 14:32with. So I mean, there, there's so
- 14:33many different, you know, things that open up for these kids now
- 14:38that just weren't possible, you know, even looking back 5-6
- 14:41years ago. So it's crazy.
- 14:43I don't know if that that's the biggest piece of it, whether
- 14:46it's the NIL piece or whether it's, you know, something
- 14:48related to, you know, the, the, the, the, the scheme or the
- 14:52offseason regiment that, that, that that team goes through.
- 14:57But we, we seem to turn, especially when it comes to
- 15:02guards. We, we, we turn through guards a
- 15:05lot more than and we shouldn't. I would like to see.
- 15:08And we shouldn't because his system with, with some of the
- 15:12the three-point shots and stuff like that, we, we shouldn't be
- 15:14losing guards. Right.
- 15:17I mean, really shouldn't, right? Let's roll on past that and
- 15:20let's talk about the mayonnaise bowl.
- 15:23Before we get into that, we got some, we got some folks joining
- 15:25us. Let's go ahead and throw some
- 15:26names up. Here.
- 15:26All right, Tom, up here then, man.
- 15:28Hey, we got. Andre Andre.
- 15:32Big weekend for him. Go birds.
- 15:34Andre, you still ain't played me in this game man, I've been I've
- 15:37been ready to catch you on this game for a while pop that gaming
- 15:42tag let's figure out what's going on that's.
- 15:44Right. Hey, we got we got Lavar in the
- 15:46house. Lavar, What's up, Lavar?
- 15:48Lavar in the house. Mile High.
- 15:51He said he wouldn't get video for a while.
- 15:53Am I? How you getting video now?
- 15:54You good? I did a check I I was able to
- 15:57pull it through on my end so it looks like everybody else is
- 15:59interacting so I'm guessing. Yeah, I think everybody good
- 16:01and. Everything's looking good, our
- 16:03man Chris. Mr. Lester's in the house.
- 16:08Congratulations to this man. Congratulations to you, got a
- 16:12baby on the way. Baby on the way.
- 16:14Why are y'all telling that man? Congratulations for that baby.
- 16:17You your life about to be healed.
- 16:19You should have left that baby. Where was that?
- 16:21Now I'm just playing, man. That's a blessing.
- 16:23It is a blessing for. Real.
- 16:25It is a blessing we got Jim up in here.
- 16:27Throw Jim's up there. We got Jim, Jim, Jim a couple
- 16:30comments here. That one right there, yeah, it
- 16:32is a hell of a class that he's going in with.
- 16:34And then, yeah, I I think the next one is true, Lee.
- 16:38So it should be in Hall of Fame. Lee.
- 16:41So it's going to elite running back.
- 16:43And that year he scored 2027. All right, 27 touchdowns.
- 16:47That's crazy. It's still crazy.
- 16:50Wow. Crazy.
- 16:51All right, well, let's flip it to the Mayo Bowl.
- 16:54Thank y'all. Keep the comments coming.
- 16:55Anything you want to chime in on 24/10?
- 16:59And I mean, this is the way I felt about it.
- 17:03We knew what it was going to be, right?
- 17:07We knew what it was going to be. You start looking who they had
- 17:11lead, who we had lead. We had a hell of a lot better
- 17:15players leave than they had left.
- 17:17They lost their tackle and their wide receiver and maybe one
- 17:19other offensive line. They had most of their defense
- 17:22intact. They had their quarterback
- 17:23intact. They had their lead running back
- 17:26intact. Not just quarterback intact,
- 17:28multi year starting. Quarterback multi year starting
- 17:30quarterback intact. I thought it was going to be 45
- 17:34to 7. I ain't going to lie to you.
- 17:37I didn't too, I was actually. I think I texted y'all after the
- 17:40game was like we only lost about 14 I think.
- 17:45The the, the problem that I had is that there were still some
- 17:47opportunities that we didn't capitalize on.
- 17:50Yeah. And I mean, I know we're going
- 17:51to talk about that in a little bit, but let's start with what
- 17:53went well, what did y'all like? And I mean, what was it?
- 17:57Was it mostly them, the young bucks showing out a little bit
- 18:01or what was it? Aiden Green or Brody Adams, I
- 18:07mean, you get to see what the next leaders in your in your
- 18:14wide receiver room. I know we bringing into a couple
- 18:16of wide receivers, but when you bring somebody in, you can say I
- 18:20need veteran leadership what you do.
- 18:22But you got to have people there that know what the culture is of
- 18:25what you're trying to build at your school.
- 18:27So even if you bring in a kid that's played football for five
- 18:31years, a college football, that's great, but he had some
- 18:34experience, but he doesn't have Blackbird Blacksburg experience,
- 18:39you know what I'm saying? That's the thing that you need.
- 18:42So when you see some of the young guys get in and I mean,
- 18:47Aiden look good. I don't know, man.
- 18:48Some people was hating on Aiden. Like I always thought Aiden was
- 18:51a baller, but some people was like, oh, Nah, man, he's not
- 18:54going to be that good. You know, you don't he this or
- 18:58he dropped. He has too many drops.
- 18:59That's what it was this year. He has too many drops and I'm
- 19:01like, you got to take some lumps, you know what I'm saying?
- 19:04Like he's he's a young player. He may seem old to us, but what
- 19:08is he? He's going to be a A junior, no?
- 19:11Richer sophomore. Cuz he richer.
- 19:13Sophomore. Yeah.
- 19:14He's richer. Sophomore.
- 19:16He played very little his first year.
- 19:18He played sparingly this year, right?
- 19:21A green, absolutely bald. I mean, you look at his, that's
- 19:24that line. I mean, he was the guy they were
- 19:26looking for. He was getting himself open and
- 19:29all that stuff. I tell you who else impressed
- 19:31me? The stat line isn't there, but
- 19:33we talked about looking for burst and cut.
- 19:37The freshman, Tyler Mason. Y'all see a couple of his runs
- 19:40where like you saw him, he fell in poop.
- 19:42It was just like, and he's the freshman.
- 19:44And he was running behind a ragtag line, he was running
- 19:49behind some, he was running behind me.
- 19:53And that ain't good. I felt.
- 19:55I tried to get up off the couch today, you know?
- 19:59I think some of those holes I could have, I could have opened
- 20:01up a little bit better. Yeah.
- 20:04Brian's like. And I'm 40 and and I'm probably.
- 20:07I ain't no lie to you, it took me a while Brian, to watch that
- 20:11game. I knew about it through y'all
- 20:14and some Twitter interaction. X in action, however you want to
- 20:17say it. I talked to Chris one night and
- 20:21Chris, he said a couple of the other item.
- 20:22I'm going to go watch it. It was late.
- 20:25It was late one night. So I went and watched it late
- 20:28one night and just seeing kind of what was going on.
- 20:31It was what I expected. But yeah, it was.
- 20:34It was some good stuff that went in.
- 20:35But I was like, yeah, that line was bad, man.
- 20:38It was, I think we figured this out.
- 20:40I know Brian probably saw it real quick.
- 20:42Actually, Brian, you put something in one of the chats
- 20:45wearing Johnny Tackle. Johnny Garrett's a right tackle
- 20:49or none, hands down. Johnny, we love you, but you got
- 20:53to play on the right. Side I, I think he's a he's a
- 20:55good tackle, but he doesn't quite have quick enough feet.
- 20:59I think to play left tackle BB he's not your every down left
- 21:04tackle. I think in a pinch you can put
- 21:05him out there, but he doesn't quite have the feet to to play
- 21:10left tackle as being a guy that's going to take, you know,
- 21:1250 plus steps a game at that position.
- 21:16So that is what it is because because the rest of it looked
- 21:19bad. And I mean, and that's what's
- 21:23going to happen when literally probably your three better
- 21:27players aren't there. Say what you want to say.
- 21:30Can somebody get me a birth certificate on Bob?
- 21:33Shit, he's got to be 45 years old.
- 21:36He older than us. I know he older than me.
- 21:39See, I thought he had already used like three years of
- 21:42eligibility before we got him. Nope, he was in a cheat code.
- 21:46He was at a JUCO and he's getting that rule.
- 21:49Bob shit. Crazy, crazy.
- 21:52He needs to go and find Sam Rogers and work with him in with
- 21:56high school students. That's what he need to be doing.
- 21:59I'm just going to say that I ain't going to go too hard on my
- 22:02boy, but I feel like he'd have been in school a long time.
- 22:05I think it's time to go. It's true, it's true, but he
- 22:10comes back next year, so yeah, it's a depth piece.
- 22:13If you're, if you're telling me he's a depth piece, he's a guy
- 22:15that's coming off the bench to, you know.
- 22:17He should, you should. He should quit.
- 22:19Is that what you're about to say?
- 22:22No, he's going to say Brian, probably going to say he's
- 22:24alright as long as he's a depth. Piece, yeah, as long as he's a
- 22:26depth piece, I don't, I don't need, I don't need that, that
- 22:30person being a lynchpin of my offensive line and that.
- 22:34And that's not necessarily, you know, dissing him that much.
- 22:38Like what I'm saying is that I think we've seen the best we're
- 22:42going to see from Bob Schick and we know that that's not enough.
- 22:44So if he's if he's in the front line next year, that's a
- 22:47problem. That is a big problem as he's in
- 22:49the front line next year, especially with some of the
- 22:53young guys coming up. Some of the young guys had
- 22:55already played in front of him this year.
- 22:56I mean, the the reason he was really playing any this year was
- 22:59because Leith got hurt. Robbie's one of them.
- 23:06Going to college for seven years is just fine.
- 23:08Robin. Playing football on my team is
- 23:11not fine. Get your ass off that offensive
- 23:15line and get over there and call some plays or something.
- 23:19Tally, I'm going to throw this to.
- 23:20You real quick man because player coach situation.
- 23:22Yeah, player coach Tally, we talked about this because you I
- 23:27think you mentioned in the chat somewhere or a message to me and
- 23:30maybe best me and Brian and you were like, man, this is going to
- 23:33be like the Pinstripe Bowl again.
- 23:35I don't want to watch and that's the reason.
- 23:36I know you didn't watch it, but what does it say to you when you
- 23:39just went back and watched it where we were in 2021 to where
- 23:44we are now as far as talent level goes?
- 23:47Because to me it it says a lot. No, it was true.
- 23:52I mean, it's exactly what I said.
- 23:54I, I think I put some on the timeline about it too.
- 23:57I just asked the question like how bad did people think we was
- 24:01going to lose And it all of them was bad.
- 24:05You know, I had no doubt we were going to lose, but I thought it
- 24:09was going to get super bad. So I was like, yeah, Pinstripe
- 24:15Bowl 50, two to seven, something like that.
- 24:19But the floor has been raised. I got to give for as much shit
- 24:23as I do give the coaching staff or I do give prior because all
- 24:26of it falls on proud of me. Y'all know how I feel?
- 24:30I do have to give him his props. He has raised the talent level.
- 24:35He took over a shit show. He has raised the talent level
- 24:39in the room and I think you see that when you get people like,
- 24:43you know, Keelan Adams with the ball in his hand.
- 24:46They can make plays, you know what I'm saying?
- 24:49You can see the kid can move a little bit different and a
- 24:52little bit faster than most wide receivers that we had.
- 24:56I don't think that a senior receiver that's graduating.
- 24:58Shout out to all my guys leaving.
- 25:01Hope y'all go tear it up at the combine and you know, in the
- 25:04NFL. But I don't think a wide
- 25:06receiver that we had has the skill set of just say we're just
- 25:10going to say keep. I don't think any of them have
- 25:12that skill set. And I don't think Virginia Tech
- 25:15has had a wide receiver with a skill set like that in a while.
- 25:20Even when you think back to like Isaiah Ford, right?
- 25:23Great wide receiver, different skill set.
- 25:26Cam Phillips. Great wide receiver for us,
- 25:29different skill set. Bucky Hodges, great tight end,
- 25:34wide receiver, whatever you want to call him, but much different
- 25:38skill set. We haven't had that person that
- 25:40could just take the top off of defenses.
- 25:44Jay Lane was able to show us some things in the short passing
- 25:48game where he could get loose. He was a little shifty, but a
- 25:52lot of times we asked a lot of Jay Lane, you know, and we got
- 25:54him hurt. He played hurt most of the year.
- 25:56So we didn't we we we seen him do some things, but I think I
- 26:01think we left a little bit on the table with him.
- 26:04Shout out to Jay Lane for playing Hollows games injured
- 26:06and Steven Gosnell as well. But anyway, like you said,
- 26:10Curtis, just to go back to your point, yeah, I got it.
- 26:14I got to say, you know, the the talent level, the Florida talent
- 26:18level has been raised and that and that's good to see.
- 26:21You know you do want to see that.
- 26:23So the the only position where you can see that really the town
- 26:26level had been raised was the was the position that stood out
- 26:29like a sore thumb, which is the offensive line.
- 26:32Yeah. You took the two best and two
- 26:34most important positions off that offensive line and it was
- 26:38evident that that was a problem. And that's and that's not knock
- 26:41to the other guys. I mean, I think they were put in
- 26:43a position where they're probably not quite ready.
- 26:46They weren't quite prepared enough for that scenario and
- 26:50they got exposed a little bit. But pulling back to Tally's
- 26:54point and especially looking at the wide receiver room and for
- 26:56the young guys, especially a guy like Keelan Adams, what I like
- 27:03and what I see and, and, and Tally, you kind of alluded to
- 27:06it, but I know we've talked before.
- 27:08There's fast and there's quick. And to me, quick is more
- 27:11important on a football field. And Brody is quick.
- 27:16Super quick. And and that that's a product of
- 27:20a couple things. That's a product of being fast
- 27:22with the football. That's also a product of being a
- 27:25very good with your vision and your and precise with your route
- 27:28running. And those are things that he
- 27:31does very well. A lot of times when you see
- 27:34those receivers that are quick like that, it's usually a small
- 27:38guy, you know what I'm saying? Somebody who's 5859, they may be
- 27:42listed at 511. Well, Keelan is probably 62, you
- 27:47know, 6-1 somewhere around now. So to have that and he's putting
- 27:51on weight, I think he's probably up to about 180 now, probably
- 27:55came in at about 170. If he can gain another 10 lbs,
- 28:00it mean 616-2190 with that, with that kind of speed, like that's
- 28:07a different beast than we used to.
- 28:09Then you start seeing then you start seeing talent that
- 28:12somewhere like Ohio State has or LSU or you know, even Alabama,
- 28:19you know the wide receivers has come through Alabama lately.
- 28:21You start seeing that kind of talent level.
- 28:23Not saying we going to see the same production because we don't
- 28:26know. But I'm just saying when you
- 28:27start seeing that type talent level come to Virginia Tech now
- 28:31I want to see what we can do with it and I know we going to
- 28:33talk about it later on even in the portal, you know, the things
- 28:37that prize been able to do and not even fucking having ADC,
- 28:41which we'll talk about as well. But Curtis, I, I, I think you
- 28:45had a point that you about the about the, about the jump in on.
- 28:48Well, the one thing that the the Brody play where he made that
- 28:51big, that big run, it was short sighted and he when he made that
- 28:56cut, he was near the sideline. He knew it's like I got to go
- 29:00now when he made that cut and it was the explosiveness, because
- 29:04y'all talk about quick. I always like to, I, I watch it
- 29:07close now, guys who are explosive, when I say explosive,
- 29:10it's 123 boom. He's gone where sometimes it
- 29:14takes guys 6-7 steps before they hit stride.
- 29:18Brody, it was, he made that a, the cut was impressive.
- 29:21And then 1-2 boom. And the next thing you know,
- 29:23it's 58 yards. Somebody angles him and gets
- 29:26him. And I'm sure people gave Chris
- 29:29grief. I'm sure Keelan got grief.
- 29:32But that's what we're talking about.
- 29:34We're talking about those elite traits.
- 29:36You start putting those on the football field, that's how you
- 29:39get better. So I love that.
- 29:42I'm going to tell you one more elite trait.
- 29:44And while we wrap this up, John loves foot.
- 29:48Jesus Christ. Jesus, that's the one you want?
- 29:51See, people like that is why I want to play college football
- 29:54for nine years. Yep, Robbie, you know, not Bob.
- 29:57John Love. John Love, can we keep him in
- 30:00college for seven years? I'll be all right with it.
- 30:03I'll be all right with that. But I mean.
- 30:06When he lines up the kick. When he lines up the kick, it
- 30:09doesn't matter where he is on the field.
- 30:11It never crosses my mind that he's going to miss.
- 30:15He just, it just seems like, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:19He don't miss, man. I'm always confident whenever he
- 30:23gets back there. Just so you know, Tally, he has
- 30:26two years of eligibility left, two years of.
- 30:30Eligibility money. I mean, if you're kidding, when
- 30:32you go to college you ain't looking at getting money and
- 30:34pussy like giving both of them go man, what?
- 30:40Let's go. The man happy she's been happy
- 30:43man the. Man in his college career is 88%
- 30:52from field gold range in the last two years.
- 30:56He is 38 of 42. And we've been running.
- 30:59It ain't, it ain't all been short, you know, We're all been
- 31:02running. We running about to kick 60
- 31:05yards, 50 yard field goals. I think one game he had the most
- 31:09points on the game on the team. He did.
- 31:11He might have kicked. He did, yeah.
- 31:13By the way, I noticed for you, Charlie, that was for you right
- 31:16there. Had to be.
- 31:18Yeah, JT in the name. Had to be.
- 31:21All right, so there's the Mayo Bowl season over, You know, is
- 31:26what it is. Let's roll.
- 31:27Let's talk to staff changes because the last time we spoke,
- 31:32the Matt Moore hire had been made, but it was state of the
- 31:37program. So we were talking 10,000
- 31:40things, everything liquor was flowing, bruises were flowing,
- 31:44fun was happening. But let's let's take a little
- 31:46bit deep at Matt Moore, a little bit more because I think, I
- 31:54don't think anybody's going to deny this.
- 31:56It's not only an upgrade, it's a significant upgrade from Ron.
- 32:01No disrespect to Ron, but is a significant upgrade.
- 32:04We disrespect to Ron, but go ahead.
- 32:08Try to be cordial here man. I tried to be cordial.
- 32:10They said Ron Crook was zooming calling people that.
- 32:17If this was happening, I don't know Chad, if y'all know let me
- 32:20know. They said my man was zooming
- 32:24coaching, so he didn't even have a house in Blacksburg.
- 32:28Can't do that. We can't do that, man.
- 32:30We'll we'll figure that out one day.
- 32:31But I think overall I want to hear y'all's viewpoints because
- 32:35obviously now we have gotten to the point where we've read more
- 32:39about Matt Moore. We see what if offensive lines
- 32:41done. Brian, you played online when
- 32:44you saw the hire and when you started reading, and I know you
- 32:48got your points, but what, what's, what's, what's, what are
- 32:52you most excited about with the Matt Moore hire?
- 32:56A toughness, I think that's that's a big thing and an
- 32:59ability to recruit quality talent and develop that talent
- 33:03and get that talent to the NFLI think that's something Matt
- 33:07Moore has shown those offenses at West Virginia have been up
- 33:12and down. The one consistent thing that we
- 33:15saw through that era was the offensive line play was pretty
- 33:20consistent and there was nothing really to complain about from
- 33:25their play from from from that standpoint on that offense.
- 33:28So I think that's the big thing for me is that you know, you're
- 33:31going to get a consistent level of play.
- 33:32You're going to get some good development of the players that
- 33:35are on the roster. So I think by default, you're
- 33:38going to get a level of play increase before you even start
- 33:42talking about the guys that he's bringing with him or the guys
- 33:44that he can recruit to play in Blacksburg.
- 33:48So that's why I'm excited. And again, I mean, we talked
- 33:50about the guys I wanted. I, I was, I was big Marcus
- 33:53Johnson. But I, I, I said Matt Moore was
- 33:56probably my, my, my 1B. If I had to pick up guys that I
- 33:59thought were going to be available, you know, would have
- 34:01some opportunities to get hired by the team.
- 34:04So the fact that we got that one, I'm good with it.
- 34:07Let's rock, baby. Callie, what about you, man?
- 34:12If y'all need to know anything about Matt Moore, I I ain't got
- 34:16to look at that nails. Besides, he coached at Hoover
- 34:19High School in the early 2000s. Them motherfuckers was cheating.
- 34:25Rush Pros was cheating. They was doing anything that
- 34:29could be Rush Pros had. He was living a double life.
- 34:32He had a wife on this side of town and a wife on that side of
- 34:35town. And guess what?
- 34:37He's still cheating now. He's still cheating right now in
- 34:41Alabama. Rush Pros is still cheating.
- 34:43I ain't saying Matt Moore cheating.
- 34:45I hope he cheating. I hope that he cheating.
- 34:48But if you don't believe me, you go back and you look up Hoover
- 34:51High School in the early 2000. They was the first high school
- 34:55team to have a show. He I think he was a offensive
- 34:59coordinator and maybe I know he's offensive line because I
- 35:02think he was offensive coordinator.
- 35:04They had ATV show. It's called 2A days.
- 35:06Go look up two a days and see how Hoover High School, which
- 35:09was probably 20 minutes from where I grew up, it was like
- 35:13celebrities, man, like everybody.
- 35:15MTV Show. If Matt Moore can make it
- 35:18through an MTV show with no scandals, I mean, I know he can.
- 35:22Go to Blacksburg and cheat Matt. We going to help you cheat,
- 35:26Matt. You tell us what you need.
- 35:28Tell us what you need. We tell us what you need to get
- 35:31a tackle in there right now. If Matt was in there, he seen
- 35:34#70 Matt would have, Matt would have had to tell #70 to go to
- 35:41Walmart and start bagging grocers.
- 35:43And they don't even bag groceries at Walmart no more.
- 35:45You bag them yourself. But he would have made them go
- 35:47down there and do that. Hey, Matt going to be all right.
- 35:49But besides that, looking at his, looking at what he's got,
- 35:55he got people. He's putting people in the NFL,
- 35:57which is great. You know, he took some recruits
- 35:59from us, which was not great for us, but great for him.
- 36:03And he was coaching in West Virginia.
- 36:05Like come on man, how you get somebody to come to West
- 36:10Virginia? They throwing batteries at
- 36:14people, burning couches. This man is getting people to
- 36:18come over there and they kicking our ass.
- 36:21Thank you. Thank you, Matt for finally
- 36:23coming in here to help right this ship, man.
- 36:25We just need somebody to get some big ass country boys.
- 36:30I don't care where they come from.
- 36:32And we just need them to not let the other team get to our
- 36:35quarterback and don't and tell them to don't sack their own
- 36:38quarterback. Don't step on his feet, you
- 36:42know, don't pull his pants down, None of that.
- 36:44We need you to protect him. That's what we need.
- 36:47That's what you're getting paid for.
- 36:49I think it's what y'all said. Just to kind of cap this off
- 36:51about more, it's it's the development because he got there
- 36:55in 2019 Colt Mckibbitt, who's now starting right tackle for my
- 37:0049ers. I wish he wasn't.
- 37:02He is definitely a great college player and not a good NFL player
- 37:05or he is a serviceable NFL player.
- 37:08All American, that's 2019 Zach Frazier.
- 37:12God, if Zach Frazier, two time all American what, 50th pickers
- 37:19in the center somewhere like that for the Steelers and he's
- 37:22and he's never been he's he's he's he's going to be their next
- 37:25grade center. Yeah.
- 37:27Mike Webster. You got Germante Dawson, you had
- 37:29the Pouncey kid. They nailed him.
- 37:31That kid is unbelievable. And now you got Wyatt Mallam,
- 37:35who's likely going to be high pick.
- 37:37He had this other kid down in the sunbelt.
- 37:39He got picked like in the 80's. The guy takes it and develops it
- 37:44and it doesn't. It doesn't seem like it matters
- 37:46where it is. Because to me you turned 3 out
- 37:49of West Virginia in a five year period for all Americans.
- 37:53High picks, good NFL players y'all.
- 37:57That man knows what he's doing. To your point to Brian, go look
- 38:01at the run games. Even they did not have a good
- 38:03season this year at all. Still they got more rushing
- 38:07yards than us. They didn't have a backlight to
- 38:10they still were doing 193 a game.
- 38:13Yep, that's insane and. We we haven't talked about the
- 38:16fact that, you know, Doug Nestor finished his time at West
- 38:20Virginia and is now on a practice reserve squad, so.
- 38:24Still making him he's. He's out there playing in the
- 38:27NFL. He's not necessarily on a game
- 38:30day roster, but that's not making some moves.
- 38:32So if the guy is getting talent into the league.
- 38:35He's getting talent and he knows how to recruit because we'll
- 38:38talk about the guys later that are coming over these these
- 38:41weren't 7-8 hundred ranked guys. These guys were a lot higher.
- 38:46Let's talk about the other three positions real quick that are
- 38:49not filled. Strength and conditioning
- 38:54director of high school relations and defensive
- 38:56coordinator. Curtis Curtis prompt a scare
- 39:00earlier today. Well, it still is a question
- 39:04mark. Why?
- 39:05If you did not know now David Cunningham, our buddy over at
- 39:09Tech Sideline, Jared Ferguson, still on the school website for
- 39:13strength and conditioning, but as of like 2:00 this afternoon
- 39:16he was not listening. Only football staff.
- 39:20Fortunately. Throw us off for a minute,
- 39:21Curtis. Well, still though, why isn't he
- 39:24there? But why isn't he there?
- 39:27He was part of that staff this year.
- 39:29But let's let's just kind of go into it because I mean, some got
- 39:33a break within the next week, right?
- 39:36Hopefully we thank you dude. Word on the street is it's
- 39:43breaking sometime later this week or next week.
- 39:46Everyone here we were, we were hoping it would break before we
- 39:50pressed record tonight so we could have a little bit more to
- 39:53to chew on from a, you know, new coach perspective.
- 39:57But now we're we're we're we're still going to be in speculation
- 40:00mode just like we were, you know, a little over two weeks
- 40:03ago. So.
- 40:06We don't know who's been interviewed.
- 40:08What's everyone's feeling? What's which way is the wind
- 40:13blowing for you guys? Well, y'all go ahead Curtis, you
- 40:16start us off start us. Off and I've set on this for
- 40:20about 3 weeks now. I think it's Tim Walton.
- 40:24I think it's Tim Walton out of Ohio State.
- 40:27Curtis, before you finish. So before you finish, I'm gonna
- 40:30let you go back. But when you say it, what you
- 40:33said at the beginning of when we first started looking and you
- 40:37said you defensive coordinator. Hemphill Yeah.
- 40:42I don't know, man, that kind of. And then I did a little
- 40:44research. I would be happy with that.
- 40:46I would be too I. Don't know.
- 40:48I've heard that name come around a little bit.
- 40:50Me myself, I just don't know if we go that be with somebody like
- 40:56a Tim Walton. But go ahead, answer me this.
- 41:01Why isn't Hemphill here then? They ain't played in a month.
- 41:06Because we lie too much, you know, we, we lie.
- 41:11That's what we good at. I don't know.
- 41:13I'm, I'm trying to figure it out.
- 41:15You know, I'm just hoping that if we do have AB or C that it is
- 41:21someone like Hemphill. Yeah.
- 41:23You know what I'm saying? I would be fine with that.
- 41:27I just don't want them to come out and say, hey, we're going to
- 41:29promote da da, da, and I'm going to be like, no, that ain't going
- 41:32to work. That's not going to work.
- 41:34We took this long to do this. What are we doing you?
- 41:37Better make it. If we go through over a month of
- 41:39speculating and we end up with a Sean Quinn or we for whatever
- 41:43reason, bring Bud Foster out of retirement, I know we've said
- 41:46they've said they're not doing that.
- 41:47God no. I know they said we're not doing
- 41:49that, but you know, I'd, I'd be, obviously I'd be great with Tim
- 41:53Walton. I mean, I know there's words
- 41:56that we at least had some conversation with banks.
- 41:58I mean, there's words that that, you know, there's.
- 42:00I don't. Can I say something real quick?
- 42:04Everybody put that bullshit out there.
- 42:06Tim Banks was making 1.5 million at Tennessee.
- 42:09We that's pretty much our top is 1.5.
- 42:13He was not coming. I mean, I, I basically heard
- 42:16that the conversation was had probably put 1.5 on the table
- 42:20because he essentially matched what Tennessee was paying now
- 42:23and they obviously cleared it. They you know, it's the better
- 42:27play. I mean, no bullshit to us.
- 42:30I mean, right now that's that's a better place, that's a better
- 42:32job. It's a significantly better job.
- 42:35And I mean it's an easier job because you the recruiting is a
- 42:39whole lot fucking easier if you're Tennessee.
- 42:43It just is that that that's just that's, that's the fact of the
- 42:45matter. So I.
- 42:46Mean the girls. I, I think, I think if you know,
- 42:48even if we were able to beat whatever Tennessee could fucking
- 42:51do, it would still have been a questionable decision as far as
- 42:54whether he would have taken the job all.
- 42:56Right back to my guy Tim Walton, current associate head coach,
- 43:01secondary coach for Ohio State, playing the national title game
- 43:05on Monday night. If you look back, there's ties
- 43:10to Pride. He was defensive coordinator at
- 43:12Memphis when Pride was AD line coach there.
- 43:14So there is a relationship there.
- 43:16And I know everybody says, well, that's stupid.
- 43:18You should never do that. Y'all people don't work in the
- 43:21real world. Y'all people work in fictitious
- 43:23CFB 25. I can go hire this guy.
- 43:26You ain't gonna hire anybody you don't know that, You don't
- 43:29trust, you can't have a conversation with trust me on
- 43:33that, especially when you're basically putting your, your
- 43:38life, your, your coaching life on the line.
- 43:41So if somebody he knows, I keep paying that picture.
- 43:43You look at Walden's history, JTM putting it up on there.
- 43:48He was offensive coordinator, not only in college, defensive
- 43:50coordinator league, coached several all pro corners in in
- 43:55the NFLI, think it's a fit too. And everybody's like, well, he's
- 43:59home at Ohio State. Like Jim Knowles ain't going
- 44:02nowhere. He ain't getting the DC job
- 44:04there. So for his career at 52 years
- 44:07old, this is probably his last opportunity to get a coordinator
- 44:11job. I think it's Walton.
- 44:15I would love it Like somebody put it in the chat that said,
- 44:17like, that's probably as as close to a slam dunk as you can
- 44:20get, so sort. Of banks, yeah.
- 44:24Yeah, for real. So I mean, I get it, it gives
- 44:27you everything that you're looking for, but I'm just like,
- 44:31it can't be, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:32Like until I see it, I'm I'm one of them people that is like, no,
- 44:36it got to be. It's got to be some kind of bull
- 44:38crap, you know, it's not going to be something that good, but.
- 44:42Yeah. We're going to see.
- 44:44We're going to see hopefully soon.
- 44:45Because like you said, a lot of the people who we talking about,
- 44:48like why aren't they here? Like they ain't played in over a
- 44:50month. What are we waiting on?
- 44:52I mean, the, the two people that you know make sense why they're
- 44:55not here right now is Dex and Walton.
- 45:00I mean the the of the of the people that are kind of been
- 45:02floated for this job that actually makes sense from a
- 45:06relationship standpoint, history standpoint, what they bring to
- 45:10the table from a footprint standpoint.
- 45:14You know that that's really all we're talking about at this
- 45:17point is, you know, Dex and and maybe Walton there, there may be
- 45:22one or two other guys out there. Now if now if we wanted to
- 45:25really throw our nuts on the table just go take him Bill from
- 45:29JMU and give him like 750,000 because they ain't paying that
- 45:34and and that's what you should do.
- 45:35But I think what will happen. This is my opinion and y'all,
- 45:38I've told you all this and you know, per sources, sources,
- 45:44right, Brian, per sources, apparently Quinn impressed with
- 45:49what he did for linebacker in the last month.
- 45:52I think Sean Quinn's going to be the linebacker coach of this
- 45:55unit of this team next year. The entire linebacker coach, all
- 45:59of them. Now that does give some openings
- 46:02elsewhere. We figure that out as it goes
- 46:04on. I'm sure some of y'all read
- 46:06message boards and stuff and things that are happening, but
- 46:09that's my feel is Sean Quinn is the linebacker coach.
- 46:15No title. So if in that scenario, So what
- 46:18it sounds like to me if is if we're we're targeting what seems
- 46:21to be ADB or probably safety coach from a position standpoint
- 46:27for DC, whether it be Dex, whether it be Walton.
- 46:32So you look at moving Quinn to a full time full, full unit
- 46:37linebacker coach is is that when you look at a defensive end
- 46:42specific the line coach, do you bring in somebody to work
- 46:49specifically with the DNS? Maybe and, and somebody said
- 46:53today they thought I was crazy thinking like that, that they
- 46:56might give JCA Co DC title. I don't think that's crazy at
- 46:59all. Everybody knows the way code DC
- 47:01sits work. There is the head code DC and
- 47:04then there's the below code DC. You don't call plays, you ain't,
- 47:07you ain't DC you doing shit. I think the way JC, his line,
- 47:12the way his line, his work, the way he's recruited, the face he
- 47:17is, the honest truth is he's making $500,000 right now.
- 47:21He's worth a lot more. You put a code DC title on and
- 47:24give him an extra 250. And then another thing too is
- 47:28because, yeah, we talked about like, can they recruit?
- 47:30Can they do this? A lot of times the DC and the
- 47:34OC, don't they? They don't do as much recruiting
- 47:37as we think, you know, like your name can bring people to us.
- 47:41But like you got so many other things that you do.
- 47:44It's not a lot of recruiting that they do, you know, that
- 47:48they may go with the big fish, but the groundwork is laid by
- 47:51some of those other guys. So I can understand why you said
- 47:54that. You know how I feel about it.
- 47:56I don't know yet. I want to know who that DC is
- 47:58first before I start talking about colds and everything else.
- 48:01But I don't know, man. I'm just excited to hear the
- 48:06news. I want to know.
- 48:07I want to know like what, who and what we're doing moving
- 48:12forward. You know what I'm saying y'all?
- 48:14Don't flip freak out. This light back here keep
- 48:16flickering making me feel like I'm in a scary movie.
- 48:19So if I get up and start running, that's why.
- 48:22If a Demogorgon shows up behind you, I'll let you know.
- 48:25Yeah, exactly. All right.
- 48:28So there all that is you still got those positions.
- 48:30I think probably the first Domino's got to fall right with
- 48:35the DC. Once DC falls, everything else
- 48:37will fall into place. Some of it will make sense, some
- 48:40of it won't, and we'll be back here talking about it whenever
- 48:43that happens. Trust me.
- 48:46We assume it's next week, so we may go back-to-back week, which
- 48:48is something we normally don't do in the offseason.
- 48:50All right, let's flip real quick.
- 48:51Talk about a couple of recruits here.
- 48:54One actually 2025 class Aaron Sparks.
- 49:01What? What are you laughing at?
- 49:02That would hit me Tally, hey. Hey man, I will tell you this.
- 49:08I've upgraded. I talked to the guys before I
- 49:11had to switch my office out. My son, we're going to be nice
- 49:16to him today, but he wanted to switch his rooms around.
- 49:18So we had to switch my office in his room and he actually, I got
- 49:22more space in here. So I'm happy about that.
- 49:24And I went from AT&T to Google Fiber.
- 49:27And hey, man, I'm telling you, I'm going to give the
- 49:30endorsement to Google Fiber. Those guys do not play.
- 49:35They got us set up good. You know, I haven't had no
- 49:38problems. You know, knock on some wood,
- 49:41knock on some wood. We didn't had no problems with
- 49:43the Internet since they've been here and I'm excited about it.
- 49:46So yeah, I'm glad y'all noticed it, man.
- 49:49I did this for y'all. 70 bucks a month.
- 49:52I'm good to go. He ain't.
- 49:56He ain't going to tell y'all that.
- 49:57He also did it so he didn't have to drive across town and work in
- 50:00the office every day either. Oh yeah, yeah, multiple reasons.
- 50:04If I'd have been using that other Internet, trying to work
- 50:06from home and I got fired, I've been dropping calls, you know,
- 50:10trying to get on Zoom calls. It'd have been choppy.
- 50:12Y'all know what it looked like? They would have fired me.
- 50:15They would have thought I was playing around.
- 50:16So yeah, it was something, it was something that had to
- 50:18happen. So I'm I'm feeling good about
- 50:20the new Internet. Good to hear, good to hear.
- 50:23Well, let's talk about these recruits real quick.
- 50:26The 1st 2025 Cameron Sparks top 400 player, top 15 in the state
- 50:31of Tennessee went to Baylor School, which I know Tally, you
- 50:35had mentioned. That's a pretty damn good
- 50:37school. At one point, and this is I knew
- 50:40this because Tally paid attention to it.
- 50:43At one point. This kid was a five star.
- 50:46I'm trying to figure out he's 63, he's 205.
- 50:49He's classified as an athlete. I mean, it's a great land.
- 50:54We got national publicity out of it because he did it at one of
- 50:57the one of the All Star Games. Oh, I mean, yay.
- 51:03You never know. You never know when you're
- 51:05dealing with recruiting. It could be a coach passing
- 51:07something along to somebody about a character trait, just
- 51:11something they don't like. You know, it could be that they
- 51:15didn't pick a certain school that that coach or that
- 51:19recruiter wanted. So they, you know, dropped them
- 51:21it again, you know how those rankings work.
- 51:24We, we know how those go. But at the same time, you know,
- 51:27I heard this kid was, and it could just be he had a bad year,
- 51:32could have been an injury, I don't know.
- 51:33But I know that they at for a while, this kid was high on
- 51:37Mississippi State's board or he was high on their board and they
- 51:41was high on his board. And I don't know what happened.
- 51:43I just know they said that Virginia Tech was his first
- 51:46offer and they circled back around and they got back.
- 51:50They they stayed the course and I got to give.
- 51:52And again, I know everybody who follows us and follows me knows
- 51:56like I'm hard on the coaches. I'm not a coach, no coach I like
- 52:01I'm not a coach lover. Like I love the school.
- 52:05You know, I want my team to win. Now I can like some of the
- 52:09things that the coaches do. So I'm always going to be hard
- 52:11on the coaches because they get paid to do this.
- 52:13So whenever I say certain stuff, I just expect them to win.
- 52:16I expect them to put a better product on them.
- 52:19But I got to give props where props is due.
- 52:21Like pride knows what he's doing when it comes to relationships.
- 52:24Like he shows that over and over again in recruiting and you
- 52:29know, when you talk to some of the parents and even the players
- 52:33and they talk about the whole coaching staff, you know,
- 52:35Fantail Pry, you know, the list goes on and on of the recruiters
- 52:41that we have. Like they, they know what
- 52:42they're doing when it comes to that.
- 52:44I think the just the frustration is we want to see that passion
- 52:50that we put into recruiting on the field.
- 52:52That's just it. And that's really it.
- 52:56I mean, think about Cameron Sparks.
- 52:57I mean, you know, looking at that ranking, Josh said it here
- 53:03in the comments, you sometimes it's, you know, a guy that's
- 53:08really good out the gate and sometimes competition catches up
- 53:11as you kind of age up. Still, he's still getting solid
- 53:14great. Like he's a he's a very high
- 53:15three star on all three and and 24/7 still a composite 4 star
- 53:22overall. I mean, so he's a, he's a guy
- 53:25that is still considered a, a pretty high recruit in the week.
- 53:28When you look at his offers, it's an interesting offer list
- 53:31because she's got some, some really good offers when you when
- 53:34you look at those. And then it's like, but it's not
- 53:36the it's not the usual like murderer's row that you would
- 53:41expect from a guy that had a five star label on him at one
- 53:43point. So that's interesting.
- 53:46It, it does look more like in that high 3 low 4 range.
- 53:50So I think he ultimately got to about where his talent level
- 53:54probably dictates over the course of time.
- 53:58It just he got there a little bit of a different route than
- 54:00most folks go. Yeah, let's talk about the other
- 54:05kid. Got 26 the second, but the only
- 54:09commit for 26. Cornell Warren, 6 Four and a
- 54:12half, 195 lbs. Bluffton, SC Top five player in
- 54:17the state of South Carolina, top 60 player nationally, 4 star.
- 54:25How long do we hold on to him? I don't know.
- 54:27We know how everything goes with all this stuff.
- 54:29But again Tally, I didn't even know he was I think you threw it
- 54:33out there. Hey, y'all know this kid's
- 54:34probably going to go to us. And he again, it's a it's the
- 54:37it's the Under Armour game. It's one of those big game where
- 54:40a lot of people are watching and pretty good offer list out here,
- 54:45you know, But it's so early. He'd get excited about 26 until
- 54:52after we talk with Mattie in March.
- 54:54Right, right. Well, I mean, with this kid, and
- 54:59again, I'm just a fan, you know, just snooping around boards and
- 55:04hearing certain stuff. I mean, this kid has been high
- 55:06on Virginia Tech for a while. From what I heard, family loves
- 55:10Virginia Tech. I think, you know, he loves
- 55:12Virginia Tech. So I think it had been in the
- 55:15works for a while. He wanted to announce it there.
- 55:17So sometimes that's a good and a bad thing.
- 55:20You know, like I know what I want.
- 55:23From what I heard, he's not like super high on the recruiting
- 55:25process. He just wants to lock in and
- 55:27focus on football. So that could be good.
- 55:30But again, you never know what happens if you go and put a
- 55:33shitty, you know, shitty product in the field and somebody lose
- 55:38their job or something. What happens?
- 55:39You know, whatever. But at the same time, like I
- 55:43said, to get in that early, it's it's cool.
- 55:47But then you, you get turn around on the on the other hand,
- 55:50and the quarterback, whatever his name was, Falzon Falco,
- 55:54whatever his name is, yeah, you get him.
- 55:57Yeah, you get him to commit early.
- 55:59And the next thing you know, you seeing the the, the, the I, the
- 56:03iPhone notes come out. I just want to thank Virginia
- 56:06Tech. Get that shit out of here.
- 56:10Just don't commit that early if you don't want to go there.
- 56:12You want to. Exactly.
- 56:13Yeah, don't use a placeholder, but you know that happens.
- 56:16That's what it does. It's part of the process now.
- 56:19And I mean, I think that's that's one thing to to think
- 56:23about is that I think overall, I mean, you look at the the last
- 56:27few years, I mean, probably done a pretty good job of when guys
- 56:30commit, he does a good job of holding on to him.
- 56:33You know, there there are those, you know, examples that kind of
- 56:38go against that rule. But generally he's done a good
- 56:41job. If guys get in the boat, they
- 56:43stay in the boat. So you feel a little bit better
- 56:47that you know that that commit came the early January versus,
- 56:52you know, a little bit earlier in the process like it was with
- 56:55the with the quarterback. But I'm excited for this one.
- 56:59I think it's going to be he's got he's got some good, some
- 57:01really good potential, obviously.
- 57:04And you know, another, you know, chip of the cap there for
- 57:09fantail mines. So.
- 57:11As always man, as always. All right, let's flip over.
- 57:14I got one more thing before we jump onto the portal stuff and I
- 57:18don't know if y'all saw this, I think I sent you all the
- 57:20article, but about the basically in unison, all the coaches of
- 57:27the FBS level are saying they want one portal starting the day
- 57:31after New Year's through the 12th 10 days when you can jump
- 57:35in the portal. First of all, I'll ask Brian A
- 57:39do you like it? Boo, do you think it will stick?
- 57:45I, I, I have less of a problem with the time of the window more
- 57:49than the placement in the calendar, I think.
- 57:55I think that I wish they would just back everything up,
- 57:59including spring ball and started the semester and all
- 58:04that stuff and get kind of this ironed out between the 15th and
- 58:10the end of January. I think a 15 day window is
- 58:14probably OK. OK.
- 58:19That issues with that. Spring ball to May.
- 58:22And so there's there's a lot of trickle down here because you
- 58:24have to move spring ball to May in terms of academic eligibility
- 58:28and all that other stuff. But that would give you the
- 58:31opportunity to have a window after everything's finished in
- 58:35terms of the sport, you know, the regular season, the
- 58:39postseason, the sport is done for the year.
- 58:42You have your transfer portal window immediately after that.
- 58:46And then those guys are eligible for spring ball.
- 58:48When that kicks off in May, you have a May spring ball.
- 58:52You have, you know, your two, their two-month offseason, Then
- 58:55you get into camp. Tally anything from this on you.
- 59:03Man, I don't. I don't never know what these
- 59:04people doing. I just know I feel like they let
- 59:08it get bad so they can come in and regulate stuff.
- 59:11That's what I feel. I feel like they going to come
- 59:13in with some stuff next year. Portal windows, I ain't going to
- 59:18say capping NIL, but paying attention to NIL, knowing about
- 59:22it, all of this stuff that they're incorporating, I feel
- 59:24like they wanted it to be kind of the wild, Wild West to be
- 59:26like, see, we told you, you need us.
- 59:29You know what I'm saying? Because now you got coaches
- 59:31quitting and things are getting crazy.
- 59:34So yeah, I do think it needs to be some stipulations on it.
- 59:38I still don't like them. Like, I don't know how that
- 59:42works with what we're doing out with the placement, but I feel
- 59:46like, yeah, stipulations definitely are have to be that.
- 59:50And like Robbie said, I mean, there's going to be more changes
- 59:52coming. It has to.
- 59:54Oh yeah, there's, there's got to be more changes, but the whole
- 59:57thing about the the why it has to be at some point before like
- 1:00:01mid January around to your point, yes, the last 10 days of
- 1:00:06the month, early February would be great, but school starts in
- 1:00:10most time middle of January. Kids have to be.
- 1:00:12Spring balls. So they're eligible for spring
- 1:00:14ball. They don't necessarily have to
- 1:00:15transfer in the the spring window.
- 1:00:19You mean spring? Ball I got OK, I got a summer.
- 1:00:21Session they can transfer OK, officially enroll start of the
- 1:00:25first summer session. OK.
- 1:00:27So I got what you're saying. So you're basically saying
- 1:00:29spring ball is no longer there in school?
- 1:00:32No longer during spring semester.
- 1:00:34Yeah. Well, that's what that's what
- 1:00:35I'm saying. No longer.
- 1:00:36In spring, there's no longer there in school.
- 1:00:38It's the first summer term. Yeah.
- 1:00:41I think I could get along with that right there.
- 1:00:46I think this is better than what it was.
- 1:00:48Is it perfect? No they shouldn't.
- 1:00:50In December that shit has to go away one way or the other.
- 1:00:54That has to go away if they stay January the mid you're.
- 1:00:58Fucking up your product? You're fucking.
- 1:01:00Up Exactly. You're fucking up your product.
- 1:01:02Well, you're fucking up a lot of shit because at that point
- 1:01:05there's a ton going on. What You're trying to get high
- 1:01:06school kids in, you're trying to get bold prep and you're trying
- 1:01:09to figure out what's going on in the portal.
- 1:01:12I would take this over. Now, obviously, Brian, you have
- 1:01:15the perfect plan, but you could go present that to him.
- 1:01:17And you know, a bunch of idiots at the NCAA, they just like piss
- 1:01:21it away. All right, let's roll on.
- 1:01:23As you all know, we are brought to you by the Counts Family
- 1:01:26Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy down at
- 1:01:29301 S Main St. in Blacksburg. Also, do not forget to check out
- 1:01:34Jeremy Tuesday nights at 8:00 Blacksburg on the Rock with Paul
- 1:01:38Van Wagner. I think he was actually live
- 1:01:40tonight, so he actually he matched.
- 1:01:41With us this week. He matched with us this week.
- 1:01:43Usually he's on Tuesday. He must have been doing
- 1:01:46something with the PBMS on Tuesday then you know.
- 1:01:49Hey, y'all know Jeremy got a? Hand rid Lena Khan Note now that
- 1:01:53man is untouchable. All happy man.
- 1:01:55All right well let's talk about the portal and let's talk about
- 1:01:59and if y'all did not count or have not counted 1717 in through
- 1:02:07the portal. This is clearly the biggest
- 1:02:09portal class we've ever had. I do pay attention to on three,
- 1:02:13more than 247 for some reason. On three is absolutely plugged
- 1:02:16into it and they know who's in and who's out right now.
- 1:02:20Virginia Tech, 14th in the country in portal, ranking
- 1:02:23second in the ACC, only behind Miami.
- 1:02:26And I want to start on the offensive side of the ball
- 1:02:28because obviously lot to replace over there.
- 1:02:33And I want to start with the skill players.
- 1:02:36And I'm going to pitch this to tally first tally of the four
- 1:02:39skill players we picked up. As you started looking at stats,
- 1:02:42maybe watching their games highlights, who are you most
- 1:02:46excited about coming in? I'll probably say the running
- 1:02:52back from Bowling Green, Stewart, he's probably the guy
- 1:02:56that I've been the most excited about just because we're going
- 1:02:58to have such a huge, huge hole to fill with with Tooting
- 1:03:01leaving. And he does put you in the mind
- 1:03:04of of a Tooting body size and how he runs, his ability to
- 1:03:08break tackles and things like that.
- 1:03:11And I just feel like he had a lot of production.
- 1:03:13You know, some of the other guys that we're getting, they're
- 1:03:16more, you know, potential guys. This guy has a product that he's
- 1:03:21showed and it's you can go and watch and you are going to get
- 1:03:25excited about it. So yeah, I'd say him.
- 1:03:27I'd probably say Stewart. If y'all are worrying about
- 1:03:30Stewart, if you haven't looked him up right at 900 yards this
- 1:03:34year on the ground over 5, four carry and tally, you're right.
- 1:03:38He runs a ton like Tune and he breaks a shit ton of tackles.
- 1:03:42He's got that. He's a little bit shorter, a
- 1:03:44little bit more compact, but it ain't, it ain't much.
- 1:03:47It doesn't change him there, Brian, what about you?
- 1:03:51He like Stewart? Are you on that boat or is there
- 1:03:53somebody else that's caught your eye?
- 1:03:55You're looking at just the offensive side.
- 1:03:57Offensive skill players. I'm getting to the big boys
- 1:04:00next. Skill players all.
- 1:04:02Right. If we're looking at just the
- 1:04:04skill players, the the the one that has kind of caught my eye
- 1:04:08is I'm interested to see what Cam Selden can do, because I'm
- 1:04:14interested to see how we use his versatility in this offense,
- 1:04:17because I feel like he does bring a little bit of that J
- 1:04:20lane type energy. You know, he's going to you
- 1:04:26know, we we've got a bit wide out.
- 1:04:28He's going to play wide out like a running back, right.
- 1:04:30So he's going to be a guy that is going to run through you a
- 1:04:34little bit, run by it some. The question is going to be with
- 1:04:38him being a full time wide receiver, which it which it
- 1:04:40seems like is what we're going to use him with, with some kind
- 1:04:44of hybrid backfield opportunities there, can he kind
- 1:04:49of ramp up his production as a receiver?
- 1:04:52Is he going to be a guy that you can count on, you know, getting
- 1:04:55a handful of catches every game, or is he more of a gadget type
- 1:05:00player that you can kind of use situationally and scheme up
- 1:05:03against a defense to to get some big plays?
- 1:05:06I don't know which one that's going to be.
- 1:05:07I'd rather see the the former. I'd rather see him be more of a
- 1:05:10dynamic player than necessarily a gadget player.
- 1:05:14OK, I hear you on that. Yeah, I mean, obviously the big
- 1:05:16thing about him that everybody's been talking about is he was a
- 1:05:20Virginia kid. He got recruited hard.
- 1:05:22He went to Tennessee as all story with all Virginia kids
- 1:05:25that leave you go elsewhere, they gone screw you.
- 1:05:27They don't care about you. You got to come back home.
- 1:05:30Y'all know that I'm going to go a little bit different than
- 1:05:34y'all and I know I'm not doing this at all to go out here and
- 1:05:37say, are you just trying to be different?
- 1:05:40I like Marcellus Hawkins and it's for one reason.
- 1:05:43He's coming from D2. He's coming from the Mules out
- 1:05:47in Central Missouri. Yes, that is their nickname.
- 1:05:50It's the Mules. It's a giant red mule.
- 1:05:52Go look at the thing, it looks funnier and Hee Haw.
- 1:05:55And if you don't know what Hee Haw is, I'm aging myself
- 1:05:58significantly and where I grew up significantly.
- 1:06:00But if we look at this kid, he is truly a dual threat running
- 1:06:03back with what he did not last year, because last year he
- 1:06:09effectively got in the portal early what he did two years ago
- 1:06:14down there. But what I think this does more
- 1:06:17than anything is Hawkins is a junior, a true junior.
- 1:06:22Stewart's a senior. We are not having to throw a ton
- 1:06:26on Jeremiah Kony and or Tyler Mason this year.
- 1:06:31That's what I love about it. You're putting it now, if they
- 1:06:33go out in spring ball, they whip ass, they jump him.
- 1:06:36That is what it is. But it's not that pressure
- 1:06:39because we saw both those guys and I like the way they set that
- 1:06:43up. That room is now sort of set up
- 1:06:45to say this is when it's going to be your turn.
- 1:06:48You jump on them, you jump these guys, oh, these guys jump you.
- 1:06:52That is what it is. That's football.
- 1:06:53But I love the way they've got that set up now.
- 1:06:56All righty, let's go ahead somebody.
- 1:06:59Nope, thought I heard tomorrow about to say so.
- 1:07:01All right, let's now talk about the offensive line because we
- 1:07:04didn't stole all the West Virginia shit Brian be excited
- 1:07:09about if not all. Give me Thomas Remack baby.
- 1:07:16So I'm excited for having a guy that can come in immediately
- 1:07:22solidify the interior offensive line, be a leader, which I feel
- 1:07:27like has kind of been a little bit of a void.
- 1:07:30I mean, we had we had Kade Moore and we're we're losing him
- 1:07:35obviously. So I think this is going to be
- 1:07:37an opportunity to get some leadership in that room.
- 1:07:40I think there's some other guys that you know could play a big
- 1:07:44role in this offensive line as well, but Remack is definitely
- 1:07:46the guy that I'm looking for from a leadership standpoint,
- 1:07:48from an ability standpoint, to really solidify this room and
- 1:07:52kind of set the culture of what Matt Moore is bringing in.
- 1:07:54Because Matt Moore is bringing his own brand of toughness as a
- 1:07:58coach and Remack is going to be the guy in the room that's going
- 1:08:02to kind of filter that down to the rest of that unit.
- 1:08:05I'm excited to see what he can bring to the table there.
- 1:08:12You're on mute there, Kurt. Yes, I mean, Brian pretty much
- 1:08:17hit the nail on the head when he talks about Remack because it's
- 1:08:20like we need stuff now, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:08:23You want to know the other two guys are young that he's brought
- 1:08:26with him, which is good. We want some youth and we have
- 1:08:30some youth, but Reback is going to be the guy who is, he's like,
- 1:08:35I've been with him. I know you know what he expects
- 1:08:39when he's talking to the other players.
- 1:08:41Hey, I know he may have didn't pay attention to you when you
- 1:08:45ask him a question, but that's just how he is.
- 1:08:48Hey, I know he may have yelled at you, but he does that because
- 1:08:51of this. This is what he wants.
- 1:08:54You need a player like that to kind of be a, a, a coach in that
- 1:08:57room with you to get the other guys on board.
- 1:09:00Because I mean, when you think about Virginia Tech, those guys
- 1:09:03have been through what, 3 coaches in four years, something
- 1:09:07like that? Three coaches in three years, 3
- 1:09:09coaches. There's no, no stability there.
- 1:09:13So when you have a guy that comes with the coach and he's
- 1:09:17able to tell him like, hey, I've been with coach for three years,
- 1:09:21four years, whatever it's been. And man, he's helped me a ton do
- 1:09:25this. And you can go back and look at
- 1:09:28his tape. You know, the other guys,
- 1:09:30they've been with him. He recruited them.
- 1:09:31But you can go and look at this guy and say he's done it.
- 1:09:35You know what I'm saying? He's played at a high level.
- 1:09:38He's produced at a high level. And this is the coach that
- 1:09:41helped him got there. So I'm excited about it.
- 1:09:44But also, you know, if I just had to throw somebody else.
- 1:09:47Al Turner, is it Al Turner? Yeah, he.
- 1:09:50Yeah. Al Turner.
- 1:09:50Yeah. He his, his upside is, is nice.
- 1:09:54You know, you know, much different when you go look at
- 1:09:57offense alignment in high school, because most of the time
- 1:09:59they're bigger and faster than people that are playing.
- 1:10:01So it's hard to take take from high school.
- 1:10:04But he seems to have a high ceiling when you just go look at
- 1:10:07what he was able to do and you know, his ranking and things
- 1:10:11like that. And plus, I've seen him in the
- 1:10:13I've seen him in the in the, in the recruiting when he was out
- 1:10:19in his recruiting pictures. Hey, the man had on some retro
- 1:10:22fours. If I got an offense, a white
- 1:10:24offensive lineman that's got some retro 4 Jordan zone that
- 1:10:27mean he'd have been around some black people.
- 1:10:30So he understands how this world works and he ain't scared.
- 1:10:33He don't get in here. He got a little style about
- 1:10:35himself. His daddy already been getting
- 1:10:38involved with with hokey Twitter as well.
- 1:10:41We need him to do that because we crazy.
- 1:10:43We like crazy people. We hope he crazy.
- 1:10:46So yeah, man, I'm, I'm excited about the I'm excited that a
- 1:10:49coach came in and he brought some shit with it.
- 1:10:52You know what I'm saying? Like I'm used to people taking
- 1:10:55shit with them leaving. I'm glad he brought some, some
- 1:10:58players with him and brought an attitude.
- 1:11:00And I'll say this, I got, I do got to give a shout out to, I
- 1:11:03won't say no names, but I'll just say a source that I trust.
- 1:11:08I was in the room with Matt Moore on a recruiting trip and
- 1:11:14he was very impressed with what he's seen and heard from Matt
- 1:11:18Moore, his recruiting tactics, how he talks to the high school
- 1:11:23kids, how he's already talking about Virginia Tech.
- 1:11:27So I didn't see it first hand. But again, the person that I
- 1:11:32trust, my family told me that he seen it first hand and gave me a
- 1:11:39kind of a breakdown on on what he's seen and what he heard.
- 1:11:42And from what he said. Like I'm excited about it
- 1:11:46because when you get a lot of time offensive line coaches, I
- 1:11:49mean, most people just conceive. It was like meatheads, you know
- 1:11:53what I'm saying, you know, cut off sleeves, shirt, spit
- 1:11:55tobacco, you know, get out there and block somebody.
- 1:11:58But when you got somebody who has it was told to me can break
- 1:12:02stuff down like, Hey, when I get you in as a as a senior, you
- 1:12:06know, now you're a senior in high school.
- 1:12:09This is what what you need to do this year.
- 1:12:11This is what I expect you to do this year.
- 1:12:13And then when you come in as a freshman, you'll be doing this,
- 1:12:16breaking it down like that to a lineman, because a lot of times
- 1:12:20lineman are overlooked by a lot of people.
- 1:12:23But when you have somebody who will pour into them because I
- 1:12:27mean, who's the who's the highest paid people in the NFL?
- 1:12:34The guy who's throwing the ball, guy who's catching the ball, guy
- 1:12:37who's stopping the dude from catching the ball and the guy
- 1:12:39who was protecting the guy from throwing the ball, that's
- 1:12:42throwing the ball. And probably the guy who's
- 1:12:44rushing the guy throwing the ball.
- 1:12:45So when you start talking about offensive lineman, they're very
- 1:12:49important. And as fans, we don't really pay
- 1:12:53attention to that until you get in something like we was in this
- 1:12:56year and you're like, damn, we need sponsors line.
- 1:12:57And so I'm excited about Matt Moore being there and bringing
- 1:13:02some, bringing some kids with it.
- 1:13:04If you don't have at least a good offensive line, you are
- 1:13:07lowering the ceiling on the talent of the rest of the
- 1:13:10offense. You are that.
- 1:13:11You are that on a show. Look at this.
- 1:13:13I'm sorry. I was, I was just going to
- 1:13:15piggyback a little bit on on totally there.
- 1:13:21You know, you talk about the importance of the offensive line
- 1:13:23and I think you know, what we've had a problem with and what I'm
- 1:13:27hoping that, you know, Matt Moore can help us solve is the
- 1:13:33development piece. And the, you know, Tally, you
- 1:13:38talked about it bringing some talent with you.
- 1:13:40So if, if we had a big criticism of this staff on the recruiting
- 1:13:45side, they've done pretty well recruiting overall, I feel.
- 1:13:49But the coaches that came in didn't bring a whole lot with
- 1:13:52them from wherever they came from previously.
- 1:13:55They they didn't bring a whole lot with them, right.
- 1:13:57This hire, he's bringing some with him.
- 1:14:01So I think that speaks to the culture.
- 1:14:03And as as you pointed out, Tally, you're getting some, some
- 1:14:05good initial feedback from folks on the road as well.
- 1:14:09So that that bodes well for the future as well all.
- 1:14:13Right. I'm going to ask you this real
- 1:14:14quick. First of all, Al Tuner love.
- 1:14:16Get him good counsel, kid. Good counsel up in Maryland,
- 1:14:19kid. That's, that's it.
- 1:14:21That's a good football program. Second, Brian and Ali, y'all,
- 1:14:25y'all watch a little bit of Remack.
- 1:14:29Can he play left tackle? Because he didn't have the
- 1:14:30opportunity to play left tackle because Wyatt Malin's been
- 1:14:33there. And Wyatt Malin's getting taken
- 1:14:35very high in the draft somewhere in the first 3 rounds because he
- 1:14:38had the capability to kick outside.
- 1:14:40He's 6/6, so he's already got the height.
- 1:14:43He's got the physical tool. I mean, he's, he's, you know,
- 1:14:466/6, 3:15-ish. So I mean, he's got the, the
- 1:14:50size and the, the physicals. I haven't watched enough tape
- 1:14:53on, on his foot speed to tell you whether he can handle that,
- 1:14:58that level of step outside. And you know, like you said with
- 1:15:02Mylan there, there wasn't really a a big opportunity for anybody
- 1:15:06else to get a bunch of run, especially when you were already
- 1:15:08good enough to get on the field elsewhere.
- 1:15:11So I'm, I think it would, it wouldn't hurt to try them out
- 1:15:17there, especially if you don't get another guy that has seen
- 1:15:21some significant snaps that left tackle at the collegiate level,
- 1:15:25you know, before the start of spring ball.
- 1:15:27So it couldn't hurt. And, and I don't, I don't know
- 1:15:31if that's something Matt Moore explores or if, you know, he's
- 1:15:33going to keep him where he's comfortable because he knows
- 1:15:35what that level of play looks like.
- 1:15:38I just hope he goes and gives somebody another tackle.
- 1:15:41Yeah. You know, I think that he has
- 1:15:44yeah, I think that he's got the the prowess and the and the
- 1:15:49recruiting skills to go get one. You know, I I just hope that he
- 1:15:53can. I know that this getting few and
- 1:15:56far between, but hell, with the way this portal stuff works, you
- 1:15:59never know who's going to jump in the portal next.
- 1:16:00So I I hope we go get another tackle or like you said,
- 1:16:06somebody who can at least have some have some significant
- 1:16:10snaps. So we're not pushing somebody to
- 1:16:13do something and we're letting them go with a comfortable hood.
- 1:16:17So. You're on mute, Curtis.
- 1:16:25All right. Let's look over to the ball now
- 1:16:26and kind of pull you out with that talk about the secondary,
- 1:16:32Callie, what we had conversations to become.
- 1:16:36Hey, Curtis, can't, Can't hear you, bud.
- 1:16:37You're still. Sound like you're in a fishbowl.
- 1:16:39How about now? Oh.
- 1:16:40Yeah, that's good. Yeah, you're good.
- 1:16:42Callie, me and you were talking and we were talking to some
- 1:16:45people out there was like, why are we getting so many secondary
- 1:16:47guys and all this bullshit? Because they all was gone, we
- 1:16:51have none. Two corners left.
- 1:16:54Yeah, you had Q reddish in the room by itself.
- 1:16:57Pretty much. That's it.
- 1:17:00Who else you got? You got?
- 1:17:02Yeah, you had. Jaylen Jones is gone.
- 1:17:05Gone. Stroman is gone.
- 1:17:07Stroke is going to Notre Dame. He was hurt all last year.
- 1:17:11We still been saying Phillips is gone.
- 1:17:15Who else? Delane's at LSU.
- 1:17:18Delane's at LSU. Wrongs going to be getting
- 1:17:20drafted. I'm gone.
- 1:17:22We got some young talent, you know, we got some young guys,
- 1:17:25but I think the coaches know they have to win next year.
- 1:17:29They got to find a way to put a good product on the on the field
- 1:17:33next year when it's not going to be, oh, let's develop these
- 1:17:35guys. You know, like I ain't saying
- 1:17:38nobody's getting fired. I'm just saying you can't keep
- 1:17:40losing games by 1 score. You can't, you got to win and
- 1:17:44they can't say, well, you know, we had an injury.
- 1:17:47So that's what happened. You got to have enough.
- 1:17:50And I just know that I feel like they're like, well, we can't put
- 1:17:53our eggs in one basket. You know, I now I feel like, and
- 1:17:59this is going to get off topic a little bit, but I definitely
- 1:18:05wish we still had Chaplin. Definitely wish we had Chaplin,
- 1:18:12but at the same time, for what they needed to pay Chaplin, what
- 1:18:17he got paid, we needed so much stuff on that line.
- 1:18:21I don't know that we could have did it to give one person this
- 1:18:25amount or two people that amount, but we need 5, you know,
- 1:18:30so we got to kind of divvy that up over five to six people.
- 1:18:33I mean, on that offensive line, we need eight people to go.
- 1:18:38We need eight people to be ready to go that can protect the
- 1:18:41quarterback. So sometimes it's a committee
- 1:18:44thing. And I feel like what they looked
- 1:18:46at in the portal was we might have to do it by committee.
- 1:18:52You know, even when you start looking at like wide receivers,
- 1:18:55oh, we got a lot of wide receivers or why we recruiting
- 1:18:58this? I mean, we had we were throwing
- 1:19:01feet. Jennings was hurt, Jay Lane was
- 1:19:05hurt. If y'all don't know, Gosnell was
- 1:19:08hurt, I don't know if Kwan got banged up, but it's a football.
- 1:19:11It's a football season. You know, we got to have people
- 1:19:14that we can plug into different places because that's why you
- 1:19:18lose those games, because you're playing people that's hurt.
- 1:19:20You don't have enough depth and then the depth that you have
- 1:19:23behind it is really young and inexperienced or they just don't
- 1:19:27have the talent level to really be playing it.
- 1:19:31The powerful level, you know, some of the people that we may
- 1:19:34have had on the team. So with that, if I'm a coach,
- 1:19:38I'm going out and I'm getting everything I can.
- 1:19:41If you can play, come in here and try to get you a spot
- 1:19:45because like we had Ground Zero. Like nobody has anything
- 1:19:50guaranteed. You got to go out and you got to
- 1:19:52earn it. The coaches mindset was, and it
- 1:19:57should be. You know, the coaches got to
- 1:19:58earn it. I'd be telling them that if I
- 1:20:00was proud, I'd be like, hey man, y'all ain't guaranteed nothing
- 1:20:05unless you're fine tell because you keep on fucking recruiting
- 1:20:08your ass off. We just ain't going to say
- 1:20:09nothing to you. I got a too, but it's like come
- 1:20:13on, dog, you got to you got to six and seven is not good.
- 1:20:17Nobody should be comfortable. That's why in.
- 1:20:20Between, you know, when we look at the inconsistency that we had
- 1:20:24at that, at that position, we look at a Stroman that had some
- 1:20:29struggles staying on the field, whether it was injuries, whether
- 1:20:32it was targeting dismissals, you know, whatever it may be,
- 1:20:38Stroban played what, a handful of games in two years like.
- 1:20:44At some point you got to be. Available if you're going to
- 1:20:46contribute. Stroman played 1/4 this year.
- 1:20:49Yeah, so so. 1/4 at Vanderbilt and we never got to see him this
- 1:20:52year so at some. Point you got to be available if
- 1:20:55you want to be an asset. Yeah, Jaylen Jones was a
- 1:20:58converted wide receiver. Yep.
- 1:21:01And did a great job for us, you know, did what he could do.
- 1:21:05Did what he could do. But at the same time, it's like,
- 1:21:09what's his level at the level of the guys we're bringing in?
- 1:21:11I don't think so, you know. I mean, he he the attempt was
- 1:21:17like the ceiling was is he, you know, divine Diablo, but like he
- 1:21:21never got, he never got past serviceable safety.
- 1:21:25Like he's a guy that you wouldn't mind having and you're
- 1:21:28too deep, but he's not a guy. And unfortunately we had to be a
- 1:21:32front line player for a lot of snaps game to game.
- 1:21:37And so that that was the problem.
- 1:21:39You know, you, you throw in most Phillips who's a, who's a
- 1:21:42talented player, but was young and still learning a lot and,
- 1:21:47and made a bunch of mistakes and we we saw those out there.
- 1:21:50So I mean there was and, and those guys are no longer with
- 1:21:54us. You got a, you got a backfield
- 1:21:56and you got a backfield with guys that have seen it and done
- 1:21:58it and that you got enough tape. Or you can say I can rely on
- 1:22:02these guys at this position because that's one thing that
- 1:22:06this secondary, you know, it was, we considered that
- 1:22:10cornerback room a big asset. We considered the safety room a
- 1:22:13big liability at the start of 2024.
- 1:22:15Everybody talked about it. We talked about it.
- 1:22:18You know, linebacker room was probably the only other room
- 1:22:20that, you know, was a bigger concern, right?
- 1:22:22So when we look at safety, I feel a lot better about safety
- 1:22:29right now than I felt at any point heading into 2024 or for
- 1:22:34the duration of the 2024 season, especially once you had a
- 1:22:37Strowman go down in the first game and and found out pretty
- 1:22:40quickly that you probably weren't going to get him back at
- 1:22:42any point during the season. So I feel a lot better about
- 1:22:46what we've done here. And, and when it comes to
- 1:22:48secondary, you can never have too many of those guys because
- 1:22:51those guys play a lot of snaps. They're running a lot, they're
- 1:22:53all over the field safety wise. You got a lot of big collisions.
- 1:22:56So I mean, you can't have too many of those guys back there
- 1:22:59that you think you can, can trust and rely on.
- 1:23:04So do you have a, do y'all have a particular favorite or like
- 1:23:07who's the guy that stuck out? Whether you read stats, looked
- 1:23:10at tape and said that's the guy right there.
- 1:23:14Talk about it in the the defensive backfield.
- 1:23:16Yeah, DB because we got 6. Yeah, I'm going to tell you who
- 1:23:19my favorite was, and not for the reason.
- 1:23:21Well, I'm going to tell you the reason.
- 1:23:23Q Reddish's brother. That's who my favorite is.
- 1:23:26Let me tell you why you got to play the game within the
- 1:23:31football game. There's another reddish brother
- 1:23:33that's still in high school. You.
- 1:23:35May try to go get you got to play the game, man.
- 1:23:38You got to play the game. So he's at AD 2.
- 1:23:42You know, I don't I don't even watch film.
- 1:23:44I don't know what he can do. I don't care what he can do.
- 1:23:46You just get him. But you got people coming at Q
- 1:23:49Reddish because Reddish can play Reddish is the future for us in
- 1:23:53that defensive backfield. And why don't you shut
- 1:23:57everything down and you go talk to the parents and say, what if
- 1:23:59I can get all of your boys together?
- 1:24:01So you're just going to watch one game?
- 1:24:04Y'all are just coming here. You're just going to watch
- 1:24:06Virginia Tech. We going to take care of your
- 1:24:08boys. We going to take care of you.
- 1:24:10So we go and we get his brother and we bring his brother in and
- 1:24:14then I see if the brothers tweet and all we still got one more to
- 1:24:16bring. We still got one more out here.
- 1:24:18And then, you know, I don't know how that works out that if the
- 1:24:21younger brother comes, but I mean, you got to you got to be
- 1:24:25able to do things like that. And I feel like we've missed the
- 1:24:28marks on in the past, especially with the last regime of taking
- 1:24:33the layups, you know, because when you go get his brother, you
- 1:24:36keep you potentially with that signing.
- 1:24:39It shows me that you ain't you ain't fucking around like you,
- 1:24:42you taking it serious. But it also keeps Q here and
- 1:24:47engaged and brothers can talk to each other different, you know
- 1:24:51what I'm saying? They they seem like a talented
- 1:24:53family. So and the older brother has
- 1:24:55seen some stuff that probably the young brother hadn't.
- 1:24:58So he's like, hey, man, even if Q is starting or he's getting
- 1:25:01more snaps, like I can see you're not doing this right.
- 1:25:05You know you going to listen to your brother a little bit
- 1:25:07different than you listen to any other any other teammate because
- 1:25:11y'all got that bond like that. So and it falls along with what
- 1:25:15Virginia Tech is. How many brothers have we had
- 1:25:18like if there's a brother out there, go get them.
- 1:25:20I'm mad at them because they didn't get Woodson's brother get
- 1:25:23him too. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:25:24If there's a brother out there, bring him to Virginia Tech Look
- 1:25:27at the gods nail brothers. You put them on the field
- 1:25:30together. They play good together like I
- 1:25:31just I was excited to see them play the game within the game.
- 1:25:35You know, even if I don't, even if the older or reddish brother
- 1:25:39then log a ton of snaps, like I said, I haven't did a lot of
- 1:25:43tape on him. I was just excited that our
- 1:25:44coaches, are they getting in the fight, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:25:48Taking it serious. Yeah, and, and the the youngest
- 1:25:51reddish is effectively the highest rated out of them coming
- 1:25:55out of school. I'll tell you who I like in
- 1:25:58Tally Me. And you talked about it and you
- 1:25:59watched a little tape on them and then you sold me about an
- 1:26:03hour ago. Isaiah Brown maybe screw his
- 1:26:08name up. Probably screw his name up.
- 1:26:09Y'all know I can do that. I'm.
- 1:26:10Good Brown Murray. Brown.
- 1:26:11Because I have Brown Murray. Because you said it and you said
- 1:26:14it perfectly this year we have to have a nickel cornerback.
- 1:26:18They have to be specifically made for that.
- 1:26:20Derek Canteen was that he unfortunately left because he
- 1:26:23wanted to play a little bit more Brown Murray basically is that
- 1:26:28and he's got two years of eligibility left.
- 1:26:31You probably, you probably sold that to him.
- 1:26:34You're going to start at nickel and we rotate nickel in that
- 1:26:37that star position all the time. And I think cuz that solidifies
- 1:26:41right there. You know, we know Lovett can
- 1:26:42play and now you drop him in. It's like we got a nickel, we
- 1:26:47got a corner. We got to figure out the other
- 1:26:49side between Reddish or one of these other guys.
- 1:26:53That's who I'm excited about. What about you, Brian?
- 1:26:55What about these guys? Anybody just like?
- 1:26:58Yep. You know what I like?
- 1:27:01I like both Tyson Flowers and Christian Ellis.
- 1:27:07Yeah, I think maybe Flowers just by a a hair here.
- 1:27:11I like his size, you know, just, you know, about two 11/6 foot.
- 1:27:17I mean, I think I think that's a guy that's going to be a big
- 1:27:20asset back there for us and the safety and you're looking at his
- 1:27:24tape and and things like that. I think he's going to give us a
- 1:27:27consistency of play and a, a discipline, a controlled chaos
- 1:27:33that we haven't really had at that position in a while.
- 1:27:37And, and probably Stroman came the closest to that when he was
- 1:27:40healthy and eligible. But I, I, I think we're, we're
- 1:27:45going to see some big things from him.
- 1:27:46I think he's going to definitely make a big impact in 2025.
- 1:27:52And you know the other big part about getting it?
- 1:27:54And again, Charlie, this is the game within a game we continue
- 1:27:57to talk about. You now do not have to put the
- 1:28:01middle Reddish in probably a bad position for his career because
- 1:28:05he played solid this year. But we know it's like you're a
- 1:28:10sophomore, you're very still young to the college game.
- 1:28:13We saw with most Phillips last year, we saw with his freshman
- 1:28:15year. He's still making a ton of
- 1:28:17mistakes where we know as a safety, if you fuck up, it's
- 1:28:24over. Yeah, you laugh at the fence.
- 1:28:26You you blow a coverage, you missed a tackle, you missed a
- 1:28:29gap. It's done and I think to me like
- 1:28:33that's the game within a game. That's also talking to the
- 1:28:35parents, right talent saying, hey, listen, we're not going to
- 1:28:37put Q in a situation where he's going to screw up his career
- 1:28:41where I could put him out there because we're bringing all these
- 1:28:44other guys. We're getting everything ready.
- 1:28:46Not so much this year, but next year he's going to be our dog as
- 1:28:51a safety. So anything else on the
- 1:28:54secondary room which is completely remade.
- 1:28:56If you've got your favorite, throw it in the chat.
- 1:28:58We'd love to hear it. Love seeing Kogel come back
- 1:29:00home. Should have came here to begin
- 1:29:02with. It's all I'm going to say.
- 1:29:05Let's go to the front 7 now and four guys there.
- 1:29:10I still can't figure out what they're doing with one of them,
- 1:29:12but any any favorites on that Bass Priest or Nash?
- 1:29:18The outcome? Obviously Jordan Bass is a big
- 1:29:22fucking name and a big deal in a room that needs some consistency
- 1:29:28and some experience. And you know, you know, Bass is
- 1:29:33now a player that has had a little bit of run and I think
- 1:29:37it's kind of ready to take the next step.
- 1:29:39And I think we're going to give him a good opportunity to to be
- 1:29:42a big time player in the middle of that defense.
- 1:29:48Kylie, you got anybody? And yeah, of course you want to
- 1:29:53say bass. I was preaching that from the
- 1:29:54beginning just because it gives you so much athleticism.
- 1:29:58They are like Brian said in that in that linebacker rule.
- 1:30:01But anytime you get somebody, you know, on the defensive line
- 1:30:06that has some production because I feel like you got to be built
- 1:30:09in the trenches. Haven't watched a ton of tape on
- 1:30:12Nash, but watched a little bit Nash's.
- 1:30:18Nash's from what I've seen, serviceable and we ain't even.
- 1:30:22Are we talking about? Are we talking about what's his
- 1:30:25name the ginger guy yet? Have we talked about?
- 1:30:27Him. I said junk them I I know I
- 1:30:29butchered the poor guy's name. Yeah, junk them I.
- 1:30:32I don't even, I don't know how to pronounce it.
- 1:30:34I just know he calls himself the ginger freak or something like
- 1:30:36that and he was suflexing somebody and smiling in a
- 1:30:40picture. I need him on my team.
- 1:30:42You know what I'm saying? Like, yeah, let me see.
- 1:30:44Let me let me see what he doing because I I got a feeling that I
- 1:30:47mean, he's got a lot of production from what him coming
- 1:30:50from like Eastern Michigan or wherever he came from.
- 1:30:53And I feel like he's around that same size as as Lord have mercy.
- 1:31:01Come on, Brian, help me out with a name.
- 1:31:03I'm doing the Curtis. Oh man. 16 sack man.
- 1:31:07Oh APR. APR APR There we go.
- 1:31:09Damn Sally Tally. Really blinking?
- 1:31:12Yeah, same size. Not saying it's going to be the
- 1:31:15same production because I don't want to put that on the kid, but
- 1:31:20him coming off the edge is going to be scary.
- 1:31:22So I'll be excited to see what he does and how he progresses in
- 1:31:28the defense. But again, I still think we need
- 1:31:33need a little help there in the trenches because like I said
- 1:31:35that it's built in the trenches, offensive line, defensive line,
- 1:31:39everything else doesn't matter. You got Woodson back there, you
- 1:31:42got Bass back there. You get these safeties in, you
- 1:31:44got to have somebody that keeps them off of them.
- 1:31:47You know, you got to have some guys that are going to require
- 1:31:50some double team to keep them offline linebacker.
- 1:31:53So I'll be interested to see what they do in that room.
- 1:31:55But I do like Nash and I do like the the champion for you.
- 1:32:00Yeah, John could definitely, but brings a lot of upside.
- 1:32:04You know, he's kind of one of those guys where you based on
- 1:32:08his production already much like APR you do that he was going to
- 1:32:12be able to come in and at worst kind of rate raise the the level
- 1:32:16of play based on what you already got on your roster.
- 1:32:19You know, the question is going to be can he pop and have that
- 1:32:22that high ceiling that we saw from an APR, What's that ceiling
- 1:32:26going to look like? I mean, this is a guy that you
- 1:32:29know a bunch of tackles for loss, you know, all Max
- 1:32:33selection. He's a guy that I think can can
- 1:32:37make some plays. We've we've seen his ability
- 1:32:39there when he ramps up the level of play to the power forward
- 1:32:45level, are we going to see a drop off?
- 1:32:47I think that's the only thing that you would maybe be
- 1:32:49concerned about with him is that, you know, is, is a step up
- 1:32:52and level play. And he he played some talented
- 1:32:54competition. Obviously he's a guy that was
- 1:32:55AP4 recruit out of high school. So I mean he's seen he's seen
- 1:32:59the competition level before. You know, is he going to be able
- 1:33:03to to level up that play as a kind of a full time, you know,
- 1:33:06starter or rotational player in this defense?
- 1:33:08Brian, let me ask something quick because I again, I didn't
- 1:33:11watch the full game. I know y'all did and Chad, I
- 1:33:14know some of y'all was at the game and watch the game.
- 1:33:17A lot of people like what they say from Emmett Laws in the in
- 1:33:21the Mayo Bowl. Did y'all get to watch him in
- 1:33:23here Curtis? Y'all know I can't, I, I'm not
- 1:33:26like y'all, I can't just watch the line like I have to sit
- 1:33:29there with y'all and watch it. So.
- 1:33:32But from what I heard, people were giving him kudos, the way
- 1:33:35he held leverage, the way he shot gaps quick.
- 1:33:37Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the, the, the
- 1:33:39quickness jumps out real, real quick.
- 1:33:43And, you know, you combine that with a, with a good amount of
- 1:33:46power, especially for a kid that, you know, hadn't really
- 1:33:48been in a weight program like that for a while.
- 1:33:53The the fact that he's able to pop that quick, I think is very,
- 1:33:56very encouraging for the interior, that defensive line.
- 1:34:00Right. Yeah.
- 1:34:01So I don't know. I just thought about that
- 1:34:03because I'm looking at looking at Nash and his size and just
- 1:34:08the things he done because thank Josh for putting in the chat.
- 1:34:11Nash had a good year. You know, a lot of people said
- 1:34:13he could have been like he said, first team, but he just had
- 1:34:17somebody else that was playing with him that was good as well.
- 1:34:20So it'll be interesting to see because it did you.
- 1:34:24This is what this is what blows my mind sometimes, Curtis, when
- 1:34:27you have people that they'll see somebody recruit, recruit, go
- 1:34:32somewhere and they go, oh, he came from this school.
- 1:34:34He's got to suck or he can't be. But then when you go look at
- 1:34:37just say like what two years ago, Florida State had Jared
- 1:34:40Verse, right? We go look when we when we when
- 1:34:43we did our our show on them, Jared Verse didn't come out of
- 1:34:46school and go straight to Florida State.
- 1:34:48He came from yeah, small schools then transfers in different
- 1:34:55things like that. In this in this climate, people
- 1:34:58are going to transfer and when kids go to a small school,
- 1:35:01they're looking for the, the they're looking to go bigger so
- 1:35:05they can get to their ultimate goal, you know, either a bigger
- 1:35:08NIL or ultimately the NFL. So I've never discount a kid
- 1:35:13just because he came from a smaller school.
- 1:35:16You know, production is production.
- 1:35:18I just hope when they get here they can progress that
- 1:35:21production. Yep, I think the the big thing
- 1:35:23with that is that a lot of times, you know, kids that get
- 1:35:27recruited out of high school, sometimes the fit and the
- 1:35:29opportunity aren't there. So they go to a place where they
- 1:35:32have some fit and some opportunity and get to showcase
- 1:35:35their ability. And then you're like, OK, well,
- 1:35:39they've they've shown what they can do.
- 1:35:41You got some tape. That's something that these
- 1:35:42other schools that may fit that mold a little bit better and
- 1:35:45have seen what they can do in that similar style of of system.
- 1:35:49They can say, all right, well, I can I can see that leveling up
- 1:35:52here. I can see that working here.
- 1:35:53You know, I, I think he feels a need that we that we have, you
- 1:35:57know, when think about like a defensive line, like all right,
- 1:35:59well, you got a you got a big in, but you want a guy that can
- 1:36:02really get after the passer or, you know, you got that guy to
- 1:36:05get after the passer. But we need a big in that can,
- 1:36:07you know, be good against the run.
- 1:36:08You know you got guys that have shown that in a similar type of
- 1:36:12system and that's where where you can get those comps and you
- 1:36:14can get those guys from the FCS is the.
- 1:36:18D Twos. The the G5, even the D twos.
- 1:36:20Yeah, it's true. Kind of, you know, level up and
- 1:36:23and and we've seen some success. I mean, you even look at, you
- 1:36:27know, what Manny Diaz did with Duke and bring in a bunch of,
- 1:36:31you know, FCS and division two offensive lineman and turning
- 1:36:35that team around in one year. I mean it, it's, it's not
- 1:36:39something that, you know, these, these guys.
- 1:36:41Play at these different levels. You got to be talent everywhere,
- 1:36:44just like Josh. Yeah, just like Josh said, I
- 1:36:47mean first came from. Albany.
- 1:36:49It was Buffalo. I'm sorry, I was a slightly.
- 1:36:51No, no, you're good. But then if that's too far back,
- 1:36:55if y'all too young and that's too far back.
- 1:36:58If you watched any of the college football playoffs this
- 1:37:01year, who probably jumped out to you was Cam Scatterball?
- 1:37:05Yep. You know, we started his college
- 1:37:07career. Sacramento State.
- 1:37:12DDFCS. Sacramento State.
- 1:37:15So I don't want to hear about well, this just because we got
- 1:37:19this. He must do this man, sometimes.
- 1:37:21Sometimes a kid needs, sometimes they just need the opportunity
- 1:37:25so. It's all play.
- 1:37:26I think what we're seeing nowadays is like you've got kids
- 1:37:29with talent and what you have to be able to do is you've got to
- 1:37:33start playing because if you don't get the opportunity to
- 1:37:36play, ain't nobody looking at you.
- 1:37:37Nobody can tell. Well, he's a five star.
- 1:37:40He ain't seen the field. I don't know what he can do, and
- 1:37:42you're seeing the blue bloods do it as well as every other school
- 1:37:46do it. Now.
- 1:37:47I need somebody I know that can step on that field and play
- 1:37:50well. He played D2 competition.
- 1:37:52I don't care if he played D2 competition.
- 1:37:54He had 21 sacks. He was killing everybody down
- 1:37:57there. He has A63 frame, he's 260 lbs.
- 1:38:02He can bend. He's got explosion.
- 1:38:06That doesn't matter. That doesn't matter if it's D2
- 1:38:09or wherever it is. He's got those things.
- 1:38:11You can bring him here and and that's why you're seeing it.
- 1:38:14It's actually one of the better things that's happened in
- 1:38:16college football because you're seeing guys who would never, you
- 1:38:20never hear the names. You never hear the names, and
- 1:38:24the next thing you know you are hearing the names because
- 1:38:26they're taking flash. Those guys you get.
- 1:38:28To hope get a a combine offer and pop at the combine now.
- 1:38:32Now you actually get some college tape with them and they
- 1:38:34get that combine invite by default because they played at
- 1:38:36those other schools as they were kind of trending up throughout
- 1:38:39their career. We're calling all these names
- 1:38:41out and all we. I should have just started with
- 1:38:43this name. Basil Tooton.
- 1:38:46Basil Tooton. North Carolina A&T.
- 1:38:48Basil Tooton, man. I mean, who?
- 1:38:51Who would have thought? Well, I mean I'm sure he did,
- 1:38:55but as far as the college Lancet goes, even some Virginia Tech
- 1:38:58fans, who would have thought this kid comes in to Virginia
- 1:39:01Tech plays two years here, breaks the record for the most
- 1:39:05yards in the game. Like it just wasn't stood man,
- 1:39:07you know what I'm saying? Playing behind a shitty
- 1:39:09offensive line to be able to do what he did to get 1000 yards,
- 1:39:14like he had a decent off in line.
- 1:39:17He made a ran for two and he was hurt.
- 1:39:18How many games did he miss? Like even that, you know what
- 1:39:21I'm saying? In other landscapes, as much as
- 1:39:24people say, well, I hate the portal.
- 1:39:26Well, I hate the way that college football is now.
- 1:39:29You know, we would have never had the and I told somebody this
- 1:39:32on the timeline and we, I said the portal has done a lot of
- 1:39:35stuff for us that we didn't have.
- 1:39:37Our best defensive player came through the portal.
- 1:39:40Our best offensive players came through the portal.
- 1:39:42That's just what it is. Not a lot.
- 1:39:45Our three best running backs in this coaching regime and the
- 1:39:48last came from the portal. Yeah, so you can hate the portal
- 1:39:53all you want, you just, you just hate that you, you feel like
- 1:39:56your coach isn't using it to correct.
- 1:39:58But I'm going to go back to giving kudos again.
- 1:40:02This coaching staff has not missed much on evals.
- 1:40:05They know how to eval. The portal, the port, their
- 1:40:09portal evals have been good. So I'm on, I'm on, I'm gonna let
- 1:40:13them cook. Let them.
- 1:40:15Their high school evals have been pretty good too, because
- 1:40:17the guys that have seen significant playing time have
- 1:40:19popped, even if they haven't necessarily been consistent and
- 1:40:22settled. They pop.
- 1:40:23They've shown the talent is there.
- 1:40:27All right. Well, that's going to wrap up
- 1:40:29the portal. And yes, Josh, it gives and it
- 1:40:31takes away. We know all about that because
- 1:40:35if we look at where our guys who left went, only one went down
- 1:40:39significantly. And when I say that 9 to D1 like
- 1:40:446 to G5, only one to an FCS school.
- 1:40:48Yeah, and I mean, and, and, and shockingly, we've somehow, you
- 1:40:52know, flipped that in a way where rankings wise, we got more
- 1:40:58in than we than we sent out and we were worried about how much
- 1:41:00we sent out, right. So I I think that that shows
- 1:41:03that that we're doing pretty good with the portal between the
- 1:41:07guys we landed between where we sit, I think was with some of
- 1:41:11this some of the guys that are still out there is this this
- 1:41:13cycle kind of wraps up here, but.
- 1:41:15We don't, we know we need, we need one more defensive lineman.
- 1:41:18We need one more offensive lineman.
- 1:41:20If they were to get those in the next week along with making one
- 1:41:25more exceptional hire. They won the offseason again.
- 1:41:28They go have a saying stupid shit between now and August.
- 1:41:32Yep, Yep. I'll say this, the moves they
- 1:41:37made this offseason have made the roster deeper.
- 1:41:44We'll see whether the talent level is raised, but the roster
- 1:41:48is deeper and it's deeper at the positions that we were poor at
- 1:41:52last year. 100% All right. Real quick, Brian, as we start
- 1:41:57wrapping this thing up, did you get a chance to do your thing or
- 1:42:01were you busy at work? Too busy man.
- 1:42:03It's been I've been drinking from a fire hose this whole.
- 1:42:05Week all right all right I just asked all right real quick if
- 1:42:08y'all don't know national championship game Monday night
- 1:42:11stupidest thing they can do let's put it on a Monday night
- 1:42:14let's kill all these working people who like college football
- 1:42:18names stay up till midnight on the.
- 1:42:19Monday. It's on Monday.
- 1:42:22That's Martin Luther King Day, ain't it?
- 1:42:24Yes, it is. Oh.
- 1:42:25Yeah, people aren't working. Black folks will be off, we
- 1:42:28take. But you got to work the next
- 1:42:29day. The game kicks off at 8:00.
- 1:42:31Tonight we don't worry about that.
- 1:42:32We barbecuing that day, we got that.
- 1:42:35Funny tally. All right, real quick for us who
- 1:42:37are not here. I never heard anything from
- 1:42:38Sheldon Sheldon's busy y'all. But our music man, Jason, he's
- 1:42:43got actually a few things right. He made a bet for the Irish to
- 1:42:47win the national championship about two months ago at 20 to
- 1:42:50one. He has not told us how much he
- 1:42:52put on that. I'm going to find out that in
- 1:42:55the next couple days. But he's got Irish cover to win.
- 1:42:57I write a Miranda Ohio State with the win, but the Irish
- 1:43:01cover Jonathan Talley. What was the question?
- 1:43:06I'm sorry. Who's one of the national title
- 1:43:08and is? It.
- 1:43:09Oh yeah, I thought y'all already knew that.
- 1:43:10It's Ohio State, man. Ohio State.
- 1:43:12How much 2121? Wanted to make sure you stuck on
- 1:43:17it because you texted me 21. He said.
- 1:43:19He said 3 touchdowns. 3 touchdowns.
- 1:43:20He said he said uninstered testing game.
- 1:43:23Do you BBQ celebrate MLK day prime?
- 1:43:29I've got So with that, with that modest 8, I got the Irish to
- 1:43:31cover Ohio State to win. And I'm LeBron.
- 1:43:35I think Ohio State wins the Irish to cover.
- 1:43:40I mean, all they're going to do is lean on the Virginia boys.
- 1:43:45Man, don't talk about it. Don't.
- 1:43:47Talk I mean it just pisses me off when I see 91 and 30 when I
- 1:43:50thought 32 do what he did on Friday night.
- 1:43:52That made me so fucking mad when he took that little screen out
- 1:43:56just. Yeah.
- 1:43:58Why? Anyway, anything else before we
- 1:44:01wrap it up tonight, boys? You know what, just sitting here
- 1:44:07watching some of the the, the way that game against NC State
- 1:44:10wrapped up, just going to give a little bit more kudos to the
- 1:44:12basketball team for, for gutting one out, especially being down
- 1:44:1515 early in the second-half there.
- 1:44:18So that was a that was a gutsy win.
- 1:44:23I don't think this is a a very talented team, but I think it's
- 1:44:26a very gritty team. I'm trying to look up a stat for
- 1:44:31you, Curtis, before we get off here, All right?
- 1:44:33This is why I say it's going to be a blowout.
- 1:44:36Why you say it's going to be a blowout?
- 1:44:37Last five years 2024 or last year 34 to 13. 21 points. 202365
- 1:44:48to seven. That's the ugly one. 202233 to
- 1:44:5218. 15. Kind of close, right, 15/20/21.
- 1:44:57That's an interesting game. 5224.
- 1:45:00That ain't interesting. 20204225 you can go back to 20194416.
- 1:45:10These guys ain't close, man. People keep arguing about, oh, I
- 1:45:14can't believe they messed up college football and these games
- 1:45:17aren't interesting, I said. When has the national
- 1:45:20championship game been interested in the last five
- 1:45:23years? Might want to go back.
- 1:45:26It might have been 2018. I had it pulled up.
- 1:45:30I think you're right. I think 2018 was the last 18.
- 1:45:33Was the last interesting one. Yeah.
- 1:45:35Is it right? Was that Batman, Clemson?
- 1:45:37They have Batman, Clemson 20. That was George, that was the
- 1:45:42two, the two when they beat the guy on the cover 2 on the
- 1:45:47corner. Yeah, I mean come on man, like
- 1:45:49y'all people be for. People 17.
- 1:45:51Years ago, what have you done for the game?
- 1:45:54These people be in their own worlds.
- 1:45:57I was like, man, I'm enjoying the games.
- 1:45:58I don't care who, losing who. What about, you know, everybody
- 1:46:01kept telling us we won't get good games.
- 1:46:03The games Thursday and Friday were good.
- 1:46:06We stayed up playing poker and literally till the last of those
- 1:46:09games and then Friday night. If Steve Sarkeesian gets get his
- 1:46:13head out of his ass, why are you running a pistol toss 9 yards
- 1:46:16behind the loud scrimmage against Ohio State?
- 1:46:19He didn't want to win, man. He was drunk.
- 1:46:21He was already. All right, don't joke about that
- 1:46:23because he might have been drunk.
- 1:46:24We know the history there. We know the history there.
- 1:46:28Anything else y'all want to say? We didn't win an hour 45?
- 1:46:32Hey, listen, we'll say this. If there is a coaching
- 1:46:35announcement for Wednesday next week, we will be here live
- 1:46:39probably on Wednesday, depending on basketball schedules.
- 1:46:43But anything else, boys, before we go?
- 1:46:45I think we get to punch you, brother.
- 1:46:46I think we're good to go, man. Shout out to everybody who came
- 1:46:49and hung out with us. We know we go a little long.
- 1:46:52We know it's a weekday. Y'all always come in and give us

- 1:47:04saying. So appreciate y'all for coming

- 1:47:20of pieces in through the portal and we going to start back in
