- 0:35This popular series ran on CBS in a variety of formats from 1949 to 1962.
- 0:41This episode is called The Case of the $100,000 Legs.
- 0:55This half hour has its baggage packed to take a trip with America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Johnny Dollar.
- 1:03At insurance investigations, he's just an expert. At making out his expense account, he's an absolute genius.
- 1:11Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar.
- 1:16To Home Office, High Worthy Insurance Underwriters Association, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 1:21Attention, General Manager Harvey Anthony.
- 1:24Dear Mr. Anthony, the following is an accounting of my expenditures in the case of the $100,000 Legs.
- 1:29Or, who put your company out on a limb?
- 1:32Item 1. $60. $20 on a losing horse I was rushed into betting on when you had me page at the public address system at the racetrack.
- 1:40This is Harvey Anthony, Dollar. Thanks for calling back so soon.
- 1:43Well, they paged me. They said it was an emergency. And it better be.
- 1:46Why, what's the matter, Dollar?
- 1:48This is my day off. And if I know you, this call is going to make it an off day.
- 1:52If I know you, my friend, you won't mind this assignment. I want you to go out to Hollywood. Act as a bodyguard for a big movie star, Marilyn Major.
- 2:00A rare body to guard. What's the deal?
- 2:02We've issued one of those publicity policies. We've insured her legs for $100,000. The policy will only be in effect for 48 hours.
- 2:10We want you to stick with her, just to, uh, make sure she doesn't get mixed up in any hockey game. She's been notibed, so she expects you.
- 2:17When do the 48 hours start?
- 2:19Tomorrow noon. Can you make it?
- 2:21Yeah, with the help of American Airlines.
- 2:23Do you have enough cash with you to buy your ticket?
- 2:25I'll let you know right after the next race. I'll call you from Hollywood.
- 2:30Bank account. Item 2. $10. Borrowed from a friend.
- 2:36Taxi fare from the racetrack to town, where I cashed a check to pay item 3. $186.13.
- 2:43Plane fare. Hartford to Hollywood.
- 2:46Item 4. $3.50.
- 2:49Cab fare while traveling from the municipal airport to the home of the insured, Miss Marilyn Majors, at the Horizon Apartments on the Sunset Strip.
- 2:57Tip the driver. $1. Miss Majors' apartment has the best view on the horizon, it being a penthouse.
- 3:03But her outlook was anything but rosy. 03:06 --> 03:07 I found the apartment door open.
- 3:07At brst I looked in, and then I went in.
- 3:25Long distance?
- 3:25I want to place a person-to-person call, please.
- 3:29To Mr. Harvey Anthony, in Hartford, Connecticut.
- 3:32Volunteer.
- 3:33Uh, $36,000.
- 3:35My name is Dollar, as in blood money.
- 3:40While I waited to get Mr. Anthony, I wondered who had gotten Miss Major.
- 3:43In the movies, I'd always thought she looked right at home anywhere.
- 3:47And now right there in front of me, lying there nice and relaxed, she was right at home in the role of a beautiful gal who had just been murdered.
- 3:55Her face was calm.
- 3:57Her legs were neatly placed in the Bedford cheesecake position.
- 4:00The only thing that was not quite as it should have been was the very real bullet hole, which she'd been wearing where an earring should have been.
- 4:08The next cameras that would be taking her picture would be the police cameras.
- 4:11Mr. Dwala?
- 4:12Yeah?
- 4:13Here's your party. Go ahead.
- 4:15Hello?
- 4:15Hello?
- 4:16Hello, Dollar? 04:17 --> 04:18 Yeah, yeah, this is Dollar, all right.
- 4:18First, I want to tell you that those legs you insured are still in beautiful shape.
- 4:23Good, good, bne.
- 4:24I only hope you didn't insure Miss Major's life.
- 4:27She's dead.
- 4:28What? Marilyn Major dead?
- 4:30That's right.
- 4:31Oh, we certainly do insure her life.
- 4:33We only issued that publicity policy on her legs as a courtesy.
- 4:36Dollar, get to work on it right away.
- 4:39I'll get to work on it, but don't waste too much hope.
- 4:41To me, it looks like your only out is if the policy doesn't pay off on murder.
- 4:45Murder? Good heavens.
- 4:47Well, there may be something about the case that'll save us for paying double indemnity from death by violence.
- 4:51But okay, Anthony, I'll get right on it.
- 4:54Right after I call the cops to make a report.
- 4:56Do your best. Goodbye.
- 4:58Okay, goodbye.
- 4:59Hang up that telephone, mister.
- 5:06The dame standing in the kitchen doorway had a .32 caliber steel in her hand to back up the brass in her voice.
- 5:12She was a youngster, but obviously an old timer at a lot of things. Her hair was the same color as the murdered woman's. Smoke blonde. Her dress was tobacco brown and round and brm and fully packed.
- 5:27I said, put that down.
- 5:29Sure, sure. Okay.
- 5:30Now, do me a favor, will you?
- 5:33If you feel you want your bnger near that trigger, how about moving it near to the front end of the trigger guard, will you?
- 5:39Mister, I only heard part of what you said, but you're not calling no police.
- 5:44What makes you think so?
- 5:45That dame in there has done me enough harm. I came here to kill her, but somebody beat me to it, and I'm not taking the rap.
- 5:54Okay, so beat it. Who cares? Then I'll call the police. Somebody's going to eventually.
- 5:58Before I go, I'm bnding a few things and taking them with me. Now, come on. Get up on your feet, mister. We're going to the bedroom.
- 6:07Okay, okay. Don't get excited.
- 6:11Okay, mister. Over against that wall. With your face in close and your hands straight up. Come on, move.
- 6:17All right. Did you learn this at the movies or by watching your friends work?
- 6:21Don't be a wise guy. I'm not as dumb as I look. Now hold still.
- 6:26Look, sister. By this time, I shouldn't still like you well enough to warn you.
- 6:30But what you're doing right now will get you in plenty of trouble, even if you didn't commit this murder.
- 6:34I'll take that chance.
- 6:36If you don't get picked up for larceny, they'll still set you for tampering with the evidence.
- 6:41As far as the police are concerned, at the scene of a murder, nothing gets touched. They like it that way.
- 6:46What I'm taking won't even be missed. There's plenty more here just like them.
- 6:52That's all she's got in here, love letters from men.
- 6:54Who are you covering up for? Your boyfriend?
- 6:57None of your business, mister. But it's my husband I'm covering up for.
- 7:02Oh, well then you're just plain nuts. If he knew her, then they'll bnd that out. And if they want, they'll bnd him.
- 7:08Yeah, and they'll bnd him dead.
- 7:10Huh?
- 7:11My husband committed suicide over that no-good dame this morning. I've had enough out of you. Back up. Two steps.
- 7:18Okay.
- 7:19Now get over there and into that closet. Come on.
- 7:23Too bad.
- 7:24What's the matter?
- 7:25I always feel sorry for a sucker.
- 7:29Poked around in the dark. It was a small closet. That meant not much air. That meant doing something about it.
- 7:35Took my bngernail ble, stood it on edge, and slipped it under the door, pressing down on it.
- 7:41I did the same with my Tommy pen. That would at least allow me a small supply of air to sneak in.
- 7:47Then I glued my ear to the thin wooden panel that separated me from the bedroom.
- 7:51It wasn't long before my captor apparently completed her search.
- 7:55I heard her pass the closet door and head for the front room.
- 7:58I didn't hear her dial the phone, but it didn't take me long to realize that's what she was doing, and who she was called.
- 8:04Give me the police. This is an emergency.
- 8:08Hello? Hello, police?
- 8:11I want to report a murder.
- 8:13Hello? There's been a murder. The movie star Marilyn Major in the penthouse.
- 8:20The Horizon View apartment on the Sunset Strip.
- 8:24Never mind who I am. I caught the murderer. You'll bnd him locked up in the closet.
- 8:29From the moment she hung up, I could only guess what was happening.
- 8:32I heard a man's footsteps rush in, and then his voice.
- 8:35Blackmail me. What do you take me for?
- 8:43That's what I say about it, and now I'm taking them with me.
- 8:49I didn't think I had the time to spend picking the lock on the closet door, so I thought I'd kick it in.
- 9:00The girl who had just tried to turn me into the cops was lying on her face in front of a telephone stand,
- 9:05and a bevy of bullets had turned the brown silk on the back of her wet, red lace.
- 9:11She'd been shot in the back, and if she'd succeeded in bnding her letters, her killer had taken them with him.
- 9:17I made a quick search myself, and took a look through the remaining sets of letters.
- 9:22One from a guy who signed himself Baron, and the other from one guy whose autograph read,
- 9:28With all my love, Lawrence.
- 9:31My instincts were trying to pull me out of the apartment, but one look down the street threw them into reverse.
- 9:36Black and white prowl cars were arriving.
- 9:39It was less than another minute when their passengers started pouring out of the elevator and into the room.
- 9:43Hey, come on, come out of the penthouse street.
- 9:45To the bedroom closet, boys, and make sure you all stand in front of that door.
- 9:53Never mind the closet, Lieutenant. It's empty. I kicked my way out.
- 9:56All right, let's see your hands. Get them up.
- 9:59I swear, I'm going to buy some stock in a gun company. Everybody's got them.
- 10:02Miller, get around behind him. Check him for weapons.
- 10:05Yes, ma'am.
- 10:08He's clean, Lieutenant.
- 10:10Okay, who are you?
- 10:12Johnny Dollar.
- 10:13And if you lend me back my right hand, I'll show you my ID. It's in my wallet.
- 10:17Keep him up. Miller, get his wallet.
- 10:21Here it is.
- 10:22Insurance sticker.
- 10:23Please, I'm a freelance special insurance investigator.
- 10:27It sounds better. Keeps my price up.
- 10:29Hartford, eh? What's your story?
- 10:32Well, brst, I'd like to go on record as saying I didn't commit either one of these murders.
- 10:36Either one? What are you talking about?
- 10:39Well, this one here is the girl who phoned in the report that brought you here.
- 10:42The one she was talking about, Marilyn Major, is lying just as dead on the ioor in the bedroom.
- 10:46Miller! Get in there and take a look.
- 10:49Yes, ma'am.
- 10:49Okay. I'll start from the beginning.
- 10:52I was sent out here by Highworthy Insurance.
- 10:54They just issued a policy on the legs of that dame that's in the other room.
- 10:58$100,000. Publicity stunt. I was supposed to protect their interest.
- 11:02What do you mean by that?
- 11:04Well, what do you think? I suppose to see that she didn't attempt any Hindu bre dances
- 11:08or try walking any tightropes during the next 48 hours.
- 11:11Well, your worries are over in that department, at least. What else?
- 11:15When I got here, the door was open. I walked in and found her. Dead.
- 11:19Any way to prove that? Any witnesses?
- 11:22Just one. She's lying there behind you.
- 11:25Yeah, over the phone, she accused you of murder. That's the wrong kind of a witness.
- 11:29No, Lieutenant. The wrong kind of dame. I knew I didn't do it. She knew I didn't do it.
- 11:34She was somewhere in this apartment when I had arrived.
- 11:37Then why did she say it?
- 11:38I can hardly ask her.
- 11:41Lieutenant, she did tell me that she came here to get some letters.
- 11:44Her husband had written them to that major dame. She said she was trying to protect him.
- 11:49From what?
- 11:49Who knows? Maybe she just wanted him to rest in peace. The guy committed suicide this morning.
- 11:54Yeah, we can't check your story with him, can we? You've got a lot of dead friends. How'd this one here get that way?
- 12:02I'm not sure. While I was in the closet, I heard her call you. Then a man came in and yelled something about blackmailing her. And then he shot her.
- 12:10And naturally, he had disappeared by the time you kicked your way out of the closet.
- 12:14That's right.
- 12:15The story of yours may win some kind of a prize, Dollar, but not from me. I'm not a judge.
- 12:21That's one thing in my favor.
- 12:23Hey, Lieutenant, I've got something. The dame is dead all right, and look what I found in that closet. A fingernail, bible, a fountain pen with a name on it, Johnny Dollar, and a .32 caliber revolver jammed in a shoe.
- 12:36Well, Dollar, that combination puts you in a kind of jam, too.
- 12:41Look, Lieutenant, I think I can make you see things my way if you let me go through my story once more.
- 12:46Expense account item four. Three dollars. Candy, gum, cigarettes, and magazines to make cell number 36, Los Angeles Jail, less like an old place and more like a home.
- 13:08There's something about a jail door closing on you that sounds very bnal.
- 13:15In just a moment, we'll return to the second act of yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 13:20This is Brianna Stapleton, and I'm a sophomore at Lawrence.
- 13:23Is someone you love about to bnish high school?
- 13:26Maybe you're 16 years old, and you're looking for a place to grow, to learn, and to spend your parents' money.
- 13:32Why not consider Lawrence University?
- 13:34We feature outstanding programs in the liberal arts and sciences.
- 13:39Our theater department is so cool, they do radio dramas.
- 13:42You'll be surrounded by really smart people who aren't too stuck up.
- 13:45And we're located in sunny downtown Appleton, Wisconsin.
- 13:49Just the other day, my friend Nora Taylor turned to me and said,
- 13:53If Lawrence was good enough for Campbell Scott and State Supreme Court Justice Louis Butler, it's good enough for me.
- 13:59And I said, yeah, me too.
- 14:05Lawrence University, a great school near a great river.
- 14:09Now back to yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and the case of the $100,000 links.
- 14:21When I accepted this Hollywood assignment, I visualized myself spending much of my time gazing upon bars,
- 14:27but not the kind offered by my cell number 36.
- 14:31The guy who said stone walls do not a prison make had never been a guest at Los Angeles City Jail.
- 14:38He had a better chance of getting out of Bartlett's quotation than I had of getting out of here.
- 14:43But, as we keep saying in the insurance racket, never say die.
- 14:56Oh, Lieutenant Roach, what are you in for?
- 14:59I've heard several boys around headquarters have a very funny joke about roaches in jails,
- 15:04but that's not why I'm here.
- 15:06Oh, sit down. Make yourself uncomfortable.
- 15:09Thanks.
- 15:10Can't offer you a mint julep.
- 15:12The closest thing I can come to is a spearmint lifesaver.
- 15:15This kind of zero is a pleasure after facing the kind we're up against.
- 15:19Huh?
- 15:20So far, Dollar, all we've got to go on is you,
- 15:22and a mix of evidence we haven't as yet been able to trace down to its rightful owner.
- 15:28Incidentally, about that gun we thought might be yours?
- 15:31Oh, don't tell me. You're going to give it to me as a birthday present.
- 15:34It was the weapon used to kill Marilyn Major, all right.
- 15:37The test we took on your hands lets you out. You haven't been bring any guns lately.
- 15:42Does that mean you've come to escort me to the front door?
- 15:44Not so fast. We do want to know what your bngerprints were doing
- 15:48all over those two bundles of love letters we found.
- 15:51I'm going to have to learn how to pick up things with my knuckles.
- 15:55Lieutenant, I just had a natural curiosity as to who killed the cat.
- 15:59The only difference between us, Roach, is that your curiosity is oZcial.
- 16:03How far did you get?
- 16:05Not far enough. Didn't take much bguring to know that Miss Major has been playing a high-class Dodgers game.
- 6:12All the perfume in the joint couldn't cover up the smell of blackmail.
- 16:16On top of that, we found the two batches of letters that you've been messing around with. 1 6:20 --> 16:23 One signed Baron, the other signed Lawrence.
- 16:23Yeah. And remember, there's probably a third set ioating around.
- 16:27Why do you say that? 1 6:29 --> 16:31 I'm not an eyewitness to this, only an earwitness.
- 16:32But from what I could hear inside of that closet,
- 16:34the dame who came in there looking for her husband's letters found them,
- 16:37and she called you to turn me in.
- 16:38On her way out of the apartment, some guy came in,
- 16:41mistook her from Maryland Majors, and shot her in the back.
- 16:44When I kicked my way out of this closet, the letters were gone.
- 16:48So?
- 16:48I figured the murderer grabbed the letters out of her hand,
- 16:51thinking they were something that he'd written.
- 16:53Ah, then in your ble, the killer was either that Baron fellow or the other one, Lawrence.
- 16:59Lieutenant, in my ble, they're both murderers.
- 17:01Except the question of who killed whom.
- 17:03The guy who killed Maryland Major certainly wouldn't have come back to kill her again, would he?
- 17:08In this town, you never know.
- 17:10Lieutenant, I've got a two-way stake in this thing.
- 17:12One, to get my name cleared.
- 17:14The other, to get my job done.
- 17:16And I'm in a hurry.
- 17:18And I imagine you are too.
- 17:19Well, Maryland Major was a big name.
- 17:22That means we'll soon have newspapers burning under our seats.
- 17:25We're in a hurry, all right.
- 17:27Okay, then listen.
- 17:29If I were either of those murderers,
- 17:30and I knew the police had a handful of those letters that could send me to the gas chamber,
- 17:34I'd head for the border.
- 17:35Yeah?
- 17:36But, if I thought an outsider, Adam,
- 17:40somebody they might be able to buy off or scare off or beat off,
- 17:43then I'd go bnd that guy.
- 17:45Well?
- 17:46Let's bring this thing to a head in a hurry.
- 17:48Run a story in the papers.
- 17:50Tell them you released me.
- 17:51Uh, tell them that I escaped.
- 17:53Tell them anything, just so long as you tell them that you suspect
- 17:55that I have those letters hidden someplace.
- 17:58If you don't mind taking the chance of having two murderers gunning after you,
- 18:02we certainly don't.
- 18:03Oh, I mind.
- 18:04Believe me.
- 18:05I'm not doing you any favors.
- 18:07It's just that I feel safer in my own hands.
- 18:10Okay, Mr. Dollar.
- 18:11You've got yourself elected.
- 18:13We'll publish that story.
- 18:14Then we'll let you iy the coop.
- 18:16Good enough.
- 18:17Just make sure you give me plenty of bghter cover.
- 18:22Expense account item six.
- 18:24Seven cents.
- 18:26Purchase of a newspaper.
- 18:27An extra edition that hit the street about a half an hour before I did.
- 18:31Item seven.
- 18:33Five dollars.
- 18:34A big square meal to make up for the ones I'd missed,
- 18:37ignoring the little round beans while a guest in the city.
- 18:41Seeing the lieutenant's picture in black print on the front page of the newspaper almost had me believing it.
- 18:47There was my picture.
- 18:48Big as life.
- 18:50When those birds set up a pigeon, they make sure everybody knows the location of his roost.
- 18:55Firmly planted high in the story was the name of the hotel into which they had me registered,
- 19:00and to which I was under strict orders to proceed immediately.
- 19:06As I walked down the hotel corridor to my room, I felt an icy chill and a iight of goose iesh headed south down my spine.
- 19:17Come in, darling, and close the door.
- 19:20I expected company, but not your kind.
- 19:24At first I thought I'd gotten into the wrong room.
- 19:26This kid looked right at home, and she used some clothes from her half-packed overnight bag to make her look it.
- 19:32So you're Johnny Dollar?
- 19:34Yeah.
- 19:35Thanks for saving me a call-in card.
- 19:37Who are you?
- 19:38Alice Hill.
- 19:40Otherwise known as Mrs. Lawrence Hill.
- 19:43Oh, Lawrence.
- 19:45Last time I saw that name, it was on a letter.
- 19:47It said, with love.
- 19:48But not to you.
- 19:49And that's why I'm here.
- 19:50I want those letters.
- 19:52Then why aren't you carrying a gun?
- 19:54It'll be here if we need it.
- 19:56We?
- 19:57Yes.
- 19:57My husband's down in the lobby.
- 20:00Look, if you give me those letters he wrote, I'll pack my little bag and leave, and everyone will be very happy.
- 20:06Yeah?
- 20:07I think I know the next line, but go ahead.
- 20:09I hope you keep on being that smart.
- 20:11My husband was watching for you when you came in, so he knows you're up here.
- 20:15Naturally, he knows I'm here, and he's on his way up.
- 20:18We want those letters.
- 20:20Now, this isn't just a Dodgers game.
- 20:21This is a whole world series.
- 20:22If I don't give you those letters, your husband busts in here, shoots me, and I get written off under the unwritten law.
- 20:29Neat, neat, neat.
- 20:30It's a handy law.
- 20:31You're right.
- 20:32It covered up a multitude of sins.
- 20:34Where are the letters?
- 20:35Where is your husband?
- 20:36What's the matter with you?
- 20:38What do those letters mean to you?
- 20:40Well, right now, they look like my only hold on the future, Mrs. Hill.
- 20:44How do I know that you and your dear Lawrence won't kill me after you get them?
- 20:48You want me to take your word for it?
- 20:49Well, I'll have to trust Lawrence.
- 20:52He'll know what to do.
- 20:52I already know.
- 20:53There's nothing else for him to do.
- 20:55Look, Mrs. Hill, why don't you wise up?
- 20:58Your husband is ready to commit one murder to remove the evident motive for another.
- 21:02He's dragging you in this with him.
- 21:04You'll wind up as an accessory before, after, and during the fact.
- 21:08You're running up a blind alley as fast as you can run.
- 21:10And it's too late to turn around, so I just have to keep running.
- 21:15Ah, well, here he is.
- 21:17Lace up your track shoes, lady.
- 21:18The race is on.
- 21:20Come in.
- 21:22All right.
- 21:23Sit still.
- 21:24Freeze, both of you.
- 21:26It's okay, Alice.
- 21:27You can hold off on the dog and pony show.
- 21:29Save that for the witnesses when they arrive.
- 21:31Don't waste it on Lawrence and me.
- 21:33That isn't Lawrence.
- 21:35What?
- 21:36Ah, so this must be barren.
- 21:38You all through?
- 21:39Well, that depends on the gun in your hand.
- 21:41Where are the letters?
- 21:42Letters, letters, letters.
- 21:44There's one thing I want to know.
- 21:45Where does an ugly part-time Romeo like you bnd all those pretty words you wrote?
- 21:50Look, don't get me sore.
- 21:52I'll blast a few letters in all of us.
- 21:54Ah, that's the tone I was going to bring your voice up to, Mr. Baron.
- 21:57No letters is exactly what I got to offer.
- 22:00Lying?
- 22:00He admitted to me that he had them.
- 22:02He's trying to blackmail you, Baron.
- 22:03That's what he's doing.
- 22:04Who are you?
- 22:05Never mind.
- 22:06My husband's in the same boat you are.
- 22:08I read the papers.
- 22:09Lawrence, huh?
- 22:10That's right.
- 22:11He'll be here any second.
- 22:13Between us, we'll bgure out something.
- 22:16Now stay away from me, Dollar.
- 22:18I'll answer it.
- 22:19Yeah, good idea.
- 22:21If a man answers hang up, it'll be Lieutenant Roach.
- 22:24Oh, wait a minute.
- 22:26Okay, answer it, Dollar, but the brst wrong word bres this gun.
- 22:29Oh, you can believe me.
- 22:30I've got nothing but right words on the tip of my tongue.
- 22:35Hello?
- 22:38Whoever was on the other end of the line decided not to talk and hung up.
- 22:42So I started an imaginary conversation with Lieutenant Roach of Homicide.
- 22:47While I was talking, I was thinking.
- 22:49Baron's voice was the voice I had heard when I had locked in the closet.
- 22:53That made him the guy who shot the girl who turned me in.
- 22:57By the process of elimination, Lawrence Hill was the elected murderer of Marilyn Major.
- 23:03During my talk, which made no sense, and my thought, which made plenty of sense,
- 23:08I was checking the length of the cord on the phone.
- 23:10I needed Baron a little closer.
- 23:12So, I started tossing up, tossing out enough dangerous words into the mouthpiece to draw him closer.
- 23:19Threatening me with his mutters, his looks, and his gun.
- 23:23He moved into range, and I moved into action.
- 23:26I heaved the face of the telephone straight into his face.
- 23:28Oh!
- 23:29I moved in with a knee right after it.
- 23:31Oh!
- 23:33Oh!
- 23:34He stumbled back, letting go of the gun, which I kicked under the bed.
- 23:38Then, I made a break front of the dresser next to the bed, using his head to break the front.
- 23:43Ah!
- 23:44The water from the upset pitcher hit him in the face, but it didn't do him any good.
- 23:49Hey!
- 23:50Get from underneath there!
- 23:51Get away from that gun!
- 23:52Come on!
- 23:52Hey, let go of my leg!
- 23:53I've got to hold your ankle!
- 23:54Let go of my leg!
- 23:54What do you think you're doing?
- 23:54Oh, I've got a good mind to do this thing the right way and hit you out the window!
- 23:57Don't take your hands off me!
- 23:57Don't take your hands off me!
- 23:58Oh, come on!
- 23:59Come on out!
- 23:59Stand up!
- 24:01You!
- 24:01You!
- 24:02All right!
- 24:03I'll listen to you once!
- 24:05We don't want any trouble!
- 24:06Just let me out of here!
- 24:07We'll pay you anything!
- 24:08My husband is an important man!
- 24:10So am I!
- 24:11I've had enough pushing around as I can take!
- 24:14From now on, I'm the dealer, and your hand is to shut up!
- 24:17All I want to do is get out of here!
- 24:20No, you don't!
- 24:21I baited you
- 24:22You tried to bait me!
- 24:24Now we'll both sit here and face your husband!
- 24:27That must have been him that called the room and hung up when he heard my voice!
- 24:31One thing I didn't bother to tell you, your husband couldn't have known it was me until then!
- 24:36Because I came in the hotel the back way!
- 24:38Elevator and all!
- 24:40What do you mean you baited me?
- 24:42Why do you think the police put my name, my address, and my picture in the newspaper?
- 24:46To draw autograph runners?
- 24:48Oh!
- 24:49Oh is right!
- 24:50Now get over there in the corner while I free Mr. Barron's gun from under the bed
- 24:54before some mouse crawls out through the woodwork and tries taking a shot at me!
- 24:58Go on!
- 24:58Get going!
- 25:01Now turn around!
- 25:03Okay, now if you don't want me shooting runs in your stockings,
- 25:06don't make a move while I'm under the bed!
- 25:08I felt like something that old maids hoped for.
- 25:14Lawrence!
- 25:15Where is he?
- 25:16On the ioor!
- 25:16He's got a gun!
- 25:17Shoot him!
- 25:17Kill him!
- 25:18Under the bed!
- 25:19No!
- 25:20No, Lawrence!
- 25:20Not him!
- 25:21No!
- 25:21No!
- 25:21He's under the bed!
- 25:22Under the bed and taking no chances!
- 25:24Listen, Roach!
- 25:41You may be a lieutenant to the police department, but to me, you're just a big fat private.
- 25:46Now, now, calm down.
- 25:48I don't mind setting myself up as a pigeon, but you promised me protection.
- 25:52Where was it?
- 25:52Temper, temper.
- 25:54Now, who's who here?
- 25:55Let's get these stiffs sorted out, then we can talk.
- 25:58There's only one stiff.
- 26:00The other one, the one near the door, is Lawrence.
- 26:02He's only wounded.
- 26:03I had to shoot his pins out from under him.
- 26:05He came crashing in and killed Barron by mistake.
- 26:08That's Barron over there by the bed.
- 26:10Oh, another case of mistaken identity?
- 26:12How'd he miss you?
- 26:14I happened to be under the bed at the time.
- 26:17Oh.
- 26:17And I wasn't hiding.
- 26:18No?
- 26:19I was looking for a gun, and I found it, and I used it.
- 26:22And if I had one right now, I'm not so sure I wouldn't use it on you.
- 26:25You still haven't told me why you left me there alone, holding the sack all this time.
- 26:29I'll tell you why.
- 26:30And I guess it was our fault.
- 26:32The man I had posted in the lobby didn't see you come into the hotel.
- 26:36How do you like that?
- 26:37Johnny Dollar, wise guy.
- 26:39Huh?
- 26:40Lieutenant, I've got some news for you.
- 26:42Just to make sure I was taking no chances, I came in the back way.
