[gentle music] 'Twas the night before the office party and all through the studio, all fat bikes were stirring and preps are the minstrel show.
• 0:24
We give you the welcoming to the Weekly Dose of Fat. Here they are, Sven and Gomez. [laughs] Buenos dias, amigos. Good evening, everybody, or good day if you're listening on your car going to work or, or whatever.
• 0:39
You know, Fat Bike Radio is sponsored by Surly Bikes. They take care of us on this here Weekly Dose of Fat, and I sure do like their pants. [laughs] The show's sponsored by Greg's pants. My pants. Made by Surly. Yeah.
• 0:56
They're starting to get real soft after about 30 times of wearing them. I have a pair as well, and, uh, I have to say I'm impressed. I love those pants. You can learn more about them and bikes at surlybikes.com.
• 1:11
Tell us- So not only w- do we, like, have lawn mowers now or pants.com... pants, pantsreview.com. [laughs] Well, we got a, we got some kind of show this week, JK. What do we got going on?
• 1:22
We start the show with the event of the week. We award the first prize in our Becker Sewing and Design bag contest. We take calls from our listeners.
• 1:30
We check in with the Fatty Farm field report brought to you by the Winter Rush Fat Bike series, the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships, and the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships. And finally,
• 1:46
this week's event of the week is brought to you by The Tool Shed. The Tool Shed has lubricants and everything else that you can imagine to scratch that itch. Aye, aye, nudge, nudge. A nod's as good as a wink, aye?
• 2:01
You know what I mean? You know, you know what I mean? You know what I mean? [clicks tongue] Wink, wink, grin, grin, nudge, nudge. Say no more. Say no more. Okay.
• 2:09
The event of the week is Fatter by the Lake in Zion, Illinois. We have the host of Fatter by the Lake on the phone.
• 2:18
He also happens to be our musical director, the host of the Bike Black Death Metal office party, and owner and operator of Zion Cyclery. Welcome to this big shoe, vato. You forgot good-looking man. [laughs] Oh.
• 2:33
[laughs] This is radio. Yeah. You're only as good as, good as your voice is, so. It's radio, you know? You gotta have the, uh, theater of the mind. [laughs] Theater of the mind, indeed.
• 2:45
So, uh, Chris, tell us about your groovy event. Uh, it's along Illinois Beach State Park. Uh, we usually hit the southern unit first. There's some trails. There's some beach riding.
• 2:57
There's some, uh, secret beer drinking perhaps. And, uh, weather permitting, we may, you know, go further and do some single track riding in Beulah Park.
• 3:06
Current conditions are not so great, but maybe we'll get a big old freeze by then. We'll see. We can only hope. Yeah. I thought these were snow bikes. [laughs] So, so Chris, what's the date on the, on the event?
• 3:22
So that's going to be happening this Sunday after Christmas. That's December 27th at 1:00 PM, and you can meet us right behind the shop there at Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois. Right on Sheridan Road there down that way.
• 3:36
Yeah, killer. Yeah. So, uh, you were telling me that you guys have sold more in fat bikes, bikes this year than road bikes, right? Yeah, as far as sale dollars, uh, go.
• 3:49
I mean, units, the road bikes may have sold a little bit more, but, uh, man, explosive growth in the fat bike category for sure. Um- Amazing...
• 3:56
I mean, yeah, geography-wise, we are right on the Great Lakes, and there's a lot of great little trail systems all around us and, uh, usually plenty of snow to be had.
• 4:05
And, uh, you guys have also been doing a great job up at Silver Lake doing up the groomed trails, so, uh, probably no surprise that these things have taken off and, and been so popular. Yeah.
• 4:15
So, uh, just recently, we got word that the Pugsleys and, and some other Surly models have dropped in price. Uh, uh, how, how have you, how have you done with that since the, the sale pricing started?
• 4:26
[laughs] Since the giant drop. Uh, well, we sold the Moonlander, and, uh, we picked up an ice cream truck that a, a couple people are interested in. They're definitely moving fast.
• 4:36
I, the, uh, Quality Bicycle Products site, uh, those numbers are dwindling quick, [laughs] so if you're looking for one, don't hesitate- Yeah, for sure... call one of the shops and, uh, get it, get it going.
• 4:49
Yeah, those are some fantastic prices to clear out some stuff- [laughs]... and make room for some new things. Well, cool. And, uh, we're gonna- Cool. Can't wait to see what's new...
• 4:57
we're gonna see you tomorrow night- Mm... at the, uh, Christmas party. Uh, no, it's Saturday night. I know, but- Saturday night... but, but- Don't come tomorrow night... but actually- Oh, I see. It's gonna be recorded.
• 5:08
I- Right, right. I thought we're on- Yeah, in radio land- Yeah, yeah, yeah... we record- Sorry, sorry. Radio delay. [laughs] We, we record in the future here at Fat Bike Radio.
• 5:15
[laughs] I forgot we were talking in the future. Yeah, my fault. Yeah. [laughs] Future, future party only one day away. Yes, it's tomorrow, tomorrow. Undisclosed location. [laughs] In the bunker instead.
• 5:27
In the bunker, uh, with, uh- [laughs]... rock and roll and, uh, good times and what did I say, that we were gonna have cage dancers? So you gotta work on that. Bring it on down. Hey, you know what?
• 5:36
We'll- It wouldn't, wouldn't be the first time. [laughs] We, we have to talk.
• 5:39
We have to come up with, uh, maybe some kind of little video booth or something that we can get people to, uh, record some things for the show during the party. Oh, like a confessional- Yeah... like on the, uh- Yeah...
• 5:50
reality TV shows? The Real World confessional. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we could set that up. [laughs] All right. Taxi cab confessional. In the garage. [laughs] We could sit in- The garage. Perfect spot...
• 5:58
we could sit in the, we could sit in the Honda, uh, Element and- Oh, yeah... do Elemental Confessions. [laughs] Dude, that's perfect. The Element. Confessions in the Element. Yes. All right.
• 6:09
I'm glad we had this little meeting. Thanks for being on the show Yeah, thanks for telling us about that ride. We've done several of those, uh, Fatter By The Lake events, and they're a lot of fun.
• 6:17
So if you're in the area the Sunday after Xmas, head on down to Zion, Illinois. Yes. Go ride and- Yes... your fat bike. Yes. Yes, yes. Yes. See you, Chris. All right, Chris. Bye, boys. Thanks for calling in.
• 6:32
No problem, dude. Bye. Bye. Chris from Zion Cyclery. He does put on some nice events down there, and he did one of our, uh, our recent T-shirt designs.
• 6:45
Hey, speaking of T-shirts, if you ordered it and you live in the United States, from our recent, uh, batch of shirts, all apparel has been shipped
• 6:55
as promised on- It's in the capable hands of the United States Postal Service... on Tuesday, [laughs] December 15th. We did get a few people who apparently didn't read the product description very well. That's all right.
• 7:05
Reading- Reading is hard... reading is tough. Long as they buy shirts, that's all right. Speaking of the Engrish language, you have a, you have a humorous anecdote? Yeah.
• 7:18
I'm not sure it's really a frail thing, but I did think it was worth reading 'cause it's so cute.
• 7:22
[laughs] Uh, we got, we get a lot of, uh, we get a lot of email from Chinese suppliers and bike manufacturers and stuff thinking we're somebody that might be in the market for- Right...
• 7:32
buying a bunch of bikes and therefore selling them to other people, but- Which we don't... which we don't. This came from Angelia at a undisclosed Chinese bike manufacturer.
• 7:41
Um, I'm not exactly sure what it means, but at least it rhymes. And here it is, "Christmas should be a time of banked up fines, the scent of flowers and wine. Good talk, good memories, and loyalties renewed.
• 7:57
But if all else is lacking, love will do. Take my and our company all wishes to you." Man, those are some heartfelt sentiments right there. [laughs] I still wanna know what a banked up fine is. That's... What?
• 8:11
And why, why it, it would be good. [laughs] It doesn't, it doesn't sound like good. [laughs] Yes, and I, I'm, I'm not sure anything that is a fine- It's the end of the year, and now all of these are due.
• 8:21
[laughs] Well, all I have to say, boys, is cheers to that. Right. [laughs] Banked up fines and our company all wishes to you. Hey, sp- speaking of banked up stuff- Yeah... y- you just bought a new house.
• 8:34
You can owe some banks some more money. Oh, yeah. It's all, it's all wine and roses until you have to write those checks. [laughs] Sounds fantastic. Right by the bike trail. Oh, yeah.
• 8:44
I'm, I'm pretty psyched about it, man. You know, the, we have to dig the bunker for the R&D facility, but, you know, you never know. It's right by, it's right by an ethanol factory, so never gonna...
• 8:57
[laughs] Maybe I'll run a shine business out of the back of the house. Yeah, you should just... And, and maybe run a, maybe run a pipe from the still over to your house. You never know.
• 9:04
Little Everclear in the, uh, in the Gomez- I'd have-... bar area. [laughs] Well, that was the top of the hill. We need, uh, we went from just a, a can of beer or Sunkist, Diet Sunkist, to [laughs] a giant...
• 9:19
They, 10 million tons of ethanol they create there every year, so- Wow... you know. That's a lot. How... Are, are they gonna miss a few, you know, 10 gallons a month? No. No. No.
• 9:29
And you just blend that with some, uh, something else and you make- Kool-Aid... yourself some... Yeah. [laughs] Kool-Aid. And then you got, you know, have a little ice, maybe some citrus, Parasol.
• 9:41
And, uh, why don't we just take a break right here? When we come back from the show, to the show, our show- From the show... we- In the show [laughs]... from the break.
• 9:52
Within, from our- We'll take a break, and when we come back we'll, uh, slide into the Fatty Farm Field Report. [upbeat music] So I heard you need a fat bike. Mm-hmm. Come to Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois.
• 10:03
We have all brands, Trek, Borealis, Salsa, Felt, Surly, and more. Yo, we have all the cold weather gears by 45NRTH and Bontrager. Keep those fingers and toes nice and toasty.
• 10:18

• 10:34
You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, welcome back to the show. You've entered the Fatty Farm Field Report. This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is presented by the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series.
• 10:52
Winter Rush is the home of the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships and will be your hosts of the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships.
• 11:01
For more information, click on the Winter Rush banner in the show notes or visit winterrush.com. That's quite a mouthful, that USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships- Tell me... business.
• 11:13
[laughs] You kill, you killed that, though- Yeah... man. You did a good job, JK. You're like, you're a, you're a word assassin.
• 11:20
Uh, speaking of assassins, we have a weekly contest with a 40 Below bag from the world's most dangerous bag maker, Tupper Becker, from Becker Sewing and Design.
• 11:31
Uh, this week we awarded the bag to the best photo from Global Fat Bike Day. Who's our winner, JK? Colby Wright from Salt Lake is our winner. That is a really cool photo. Yeah, that is very nice.
• 11:44
And I'm, I'm missing snow. We don't have snow yet. You know it's coming. All you people that think, "Man, when is that coming?" Guess what? It's gonna come, man. Comes every year. It was 56 degrees the other day. I...
• 11:58
It was 50 degrees today. 50 degrees today. Yeah, it bumped up there. [laughs] Not tomorrow, though. I rode my damn bike outside today. It was lovely.
• 12:06
Well, it's gonna be cold just in time for, uh, Andy from Head to come down and go riding with us. I know. Andy sent us one of those Cake bikes.
• 12:15
We're gonna do a little video, uh, with some more of our, uh, campy video, uh, product mick thinger with, uh, Andy from HED. 'Cause Andy- Mm...
• 12:25
actually, like, kinda inspired at least me, I don't know about you, but they do some tech videos that are really kinda funny, and, uh, Andy's a funny cat. I think- I heard he's bringing his lab coat.
• 12:36
[laughs] He's gotta bring the lab coat. I mean, he's, like, the science guy. So we got that to look forward to. And this little Cake bike, you, you've ridden it. Yep. And, uh, he says it's 27 pounds.
• 12:49
And it's got, like, you know, inexpensive parts on it, too, as far as the cockpit and whatnot go, and- Right. You put the Raleigh sport package on that thing and, uh- Yeah, you're gonna lighten up pretty good...
• 13:00
you might be able to have-- well, you, you were saying 21 pounds with carbon wheels, though, right? Yeah, maybe.
• 13:06
Yeah, which don't exist yet, but we'll talk more with Andy about that, about what exists, what don't exist, and what, uh, what's been, what, what's been my wheel set for the last 12 months, those 100-millimeter carbon HED rims.
• 13:24
And, uh, I am no tiny sack of potatoes, ladies and gentlemen, and those wheels have just held up like crazy. Yeah, I'm on. Yeah. Just about ready to get put back on Mr. McPurple. I know.
• 13:36
I was just over there petting Otis. [laughs] When do you think you'll have him behaving for me? Maybe he'll just stroke your hand.
• 13:45
[laughs] Jim, I, I, I, I brought Jim a nice, uh, one of those nice clay bottles of Delirium Tremens. It's like a sweet beer buzz in, in a bottle. And it's, yeah, it's 12% or 9%.
• 13:58
Oh, it's, it's- It's got a lot of tremens... it's, like, eight, 8%. [laughs] Okay. Well- So, but it's tasty... put, put a little bit of that ethanol in there and that'll bump it right up.
• 14:05
[laughs] That's right, fortified beer. And with that, I think perhaps we should get Tupper Becker on the phone. What do you think, guys? Call up the Tupper. Do-do-do-do-do.
• 14:19
[laughs] I just texted him four times. In the morn. That all said, "Call now." [laughs] What do you bet he texts me back and says, "Do you want me to call now?" [laughs] I'll bet you a dollar. I'm not a betting man.
• 14:36
That's what I would do, since he's, you know, the regional smart-alecky champion of, of Alaska. Regional smart-alecky champion [laughs] Of Alaska. [laughs] Welcome. You must be talking about me.
• 14:51
[laughs] I thought for sure you would text me back a message that said, "Do you want me to call now?" [laughs] Or, or, or is it now? Do you mean, like, right now? Like, right now. [laughs] Or right now right now?
• 15:03
Oh, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our humble radio program, the most dangerous bag maker in the entire galaxy, Mr. Tupper Becker. Well, don't forget the precision beer-drinking part, too.
• 15:17
Like, I, I, I really enjoy that title. Yes, my lord, he is also a precision beer drinker. [laughs] Uh, view, I, now I know you have chosen a winner. Actually, we've already announced it, so. Oh, awesome.
• 15:33
That's the kinda- I'm looking at the show. Okay... that's the kinda crack organization we turned out to be, but it's Colby Wright- Yeah... from Salt Lake City that, uh, you chose- I know him...
• 15:43
his portrait of a lone deer drinking from a stream, but the deer is a fat bike and the stream is surrounded by snow. So you'll be able- You know, like, we should've told people-... to see that on the show notes...
• 15:56
we should've told people, like, they were guaranteed a win if they took a photo of gnomes, you know? Like, they would just automatically win. Oh, well, now the cat's out of the bag. And next week's- Yeah...
• 16:05
contest, or it's actually not next week's contest, 'cause we go on holiday hiatus. I think Sven, he- Right... goes down to Florida. [laughs] Ain't never going to no Florida. They got, they got big bugs down there.
• 16:17
JK, JK goes to, uh, Hatlantic City. [laughs] Hatlanta, baby. Hatlanta. H- Hatlanta City. And I'm thinking about going to, I don't know, the Mormon stronghold of Hercan, Utah. Word. Word. Word. Word.
• 16:34
So we're actually all just hanging out here. I'm, w- I'm, I'm looking for people to come, come up to Brainerd and [laughs] spend New Year's in a yurt with me.
• 16:43
[laughs] He wants people to take their, off their shirt in the yurt. [laughs] It's shirtless yurtless- Yeah, you-... dude. Come on. They come hang out with me in a yurt, just with me. And Mike. No, it's me.
• 16:55
And another Mike. It's, no, it's, it's, it's Adam, Blake, and me, so I mean, come on. It's, don't, don't make us spend the whole weekend braiding each other's beards. [laughs] Weird beards. Weird beards.
• 17:09
So in three weeks- Yeah, we'll be, we'll be back from the hiatus on January 8th with more fresh content in your fat bike ear hole. Yeah, and we'll be giving away the second of these fantastic 40 Below bags.
• 17:25
And Tupper, what do you want people to do to win this bag? I think we decided on some kind of, it was either video essay or video for this one, a short video clip, and then we'll say it on the next one.
• 17:37
All right, essay, it's gonna be a video. Yeah. And the, here's the rules. Yeah, yeah.
• 17:42
Is you have to send a hosted video to, the link to a hosted video to gomez@fatbike.com with "Becker Bag Contest" in the subject matter.
• 17:56
You have until, uh, you have until 5:00 PM on January 8th, 2016 to get that in. January 8th is a Friday, though. Oh, shit. [laughs] So you're talking January 6th, I would think. January 6th at 5:00 PM.
• 18:11
Let's no make it noon on January 6th. Wait a second. I don't even know what we're talking about here. Yeah. We're talking about contest, right? Right. Yeah. Okay. [laughs] [laughs] At least you know what day it is.
• 18:22
So J- So- So January 6th, 2016 at noon, you gotta have your content in, and that night Tupper will watch all these videos and choose a winner, and then we ship you out this fabulous bag.
• 18:35
Yeah, don't send me anything like crazy disgusting. Yeah, so that's a long time from now. Yeah. Does it have to be- Yeah... time-stamped within this period- So that time's gonna come up again...
• 18:43
or can it be something that they made back in 1906? Let's, uh- Yeah, sure, why not? Let's just make sure it's not something that's been around the internet a million times. All right, so something- And- Something fresh.
• 18:55
And with a- Freshness counts. Yeah. It's gotta have fat bike action in it. Yeah, so a fat bike video. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Not, not your, you know, not a ping pong tournament or anything weird.
• 19:05
And, and if you're- It has to be very bike specific... and if you're professionally sponsored like Pat Smage, professionals, I don't know, can they enter, too? Pat needs a bag. I don't know, can he?
• 19:16
[laughs] Pat's a good dude. Well, Pat's pro, but he's not, like, super paid like Kobe Bryant pro.
• 19:19
I mean, he's a pro biker for, you know, not to poo poo on Pat, but, like, he's not making millions, so I think, I think Pat should be able to enter. Right on. All right, Pat's in.
• 19:28
So everybody except for the three people in this room and Tupper. Yeah. Yeah. And, and, and, and also Chris Stewart since he's already won twice. Oh. [laughs] I thought we said he could win one more time.
• 19:39
Oh, yeah, but- Oh, he can win one more time after three you're out? After three. Three strikes, or three wins and you're out. It's like, come on, three wins in one year. All right, Chris, make a video. Yeah.
• 19:48
From Park City. So it's a video. Video contest. I'm having that guy pick my Powerball numbers. Best one wins. Yeah, that's a good idea, Powerball numbers. So Tupper- Well, thanks, guys.
• 19:58
Well, yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll pick out winners. All right. Sounds good. Hey, you got any black camo there, dude? You know the real dark camo- I-... like the camo that's so dark? Mm-hmm.
• 20:09
It's like camo for nighttime. [laughs] Yeah, I, I could prob- [laughs] It's, it's, it's... Yeah, yeah. I could, I can make something special for you guys.
• 20:19
We'll, we'll get, we'll get something super fun for you guys when we make the bags for you guys next time. 'Cause I'd like a matching jumpsuit. [laughs] Oh. And- Ooh...
• 20:29
and maybe some, some hot pants made of- Do you wanna show off your weight loss? You're just like, you're, like, full on spandex now, huh? Spandex. [laughs] No, this is, uh, this is, uh, this is not for me.
• 20:41
  [laughs] Oh, okay. It's for, it's, it's for a friend. It's for a friend. [laughs] It's for a friend.
• 20:46
[laughs] Hey, uh, so Tupper, do you, do you use all, uh, n- new material or do you ever use recycled, like, sail cloth or anything? Not really.
• 20:55
Um, I get, people send me scraps and stuff, remnants from their, like, old companies going out of business, but, uh, I usually use that for just repairs if... But all my stuff is new construction- Yeah...
• 21:07
new material, and, um- We just-... it's all pretty current, like, relevant materials for what we're doing.
• 21:12
We just had a guy drop off about, I dunno, seven or eight sails from some 28-foot racing boat that's like, "What are you gonna do with all this stuff?" I said, "We should send Tupper a sail." [laughs] They're huge. Yeah.
• 21:24
Yeah. [laughs] Wow. Yeah, we- Dang, Tupper... we do repairs with some of that stuff, with scrap stuff. Yeah, I'm telling you, the sail cloth material is pretty cool. I have a bag made, uh, from sail cloth material, so
• 21:35
you know. Yeah, it's fantastic. It's nice. I had no idea that sails actually change enough where you need to buy them regularly. I'm like, "What, 1940 was the last time I bought a sail? It's still working."
• 21:46
No, they gotta get- Yeah, it's still working... new ones just about every year. Yeah, especially- Yeah, no, yeah, you replace them like helmets... and these things are thousands of dollars for a sail. Yeah.
• 21:52
Yeah, if you think bikes- Oh, yeah. Oh, man... are expensive. Even more so. Even more so, like upwards to, like, you know, $80,000 for some of these huge sailboats that Mercedes builds, you know?
• 22:01
Like, yeah, just ridiculously expensive. Oh, that's well out of my stratosphere. Well, riding lawn mowers- Yeah, it's-... yachts- [laughs]... and fat bikes. We got it all, bitches. Yeah, yachts, lawn mowers.
• 22:14
Hey, hey, are you working on getting me a polar bear, uh, for, to walk with a gold chain up there, 'cause you got polar bears there? I, I am. I'm working on it right now. I'm at a recent bonfire- [laughs]...
• 22:24
in interior Alaska. I'm keeping my eye out for polar bears. We don't have a lot of them here- Mm-hmm... like any at all, but if I come across one- [laughs] Like- Oh, I'll see what I can do.
• 22:36
And that's why you're the- And, and it's very windy here right now. I probably- That's why you're the regional smartass champion of all of Alaska, the Brooks Range and beyond, the Yukon Territory- Yeah...
• 22:48
other places, the Aleutian Islands. Yeah. It, isn't he about where the- Yeah, we're-... the jet stream ought to start turning south to make us cold? He's probably forgot to turn the switch and point it down towards us.
• 22:59
Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's cold here. Well, it's warm right now. It's, like, it's two above zero, so it's pretty warm. You gotta go check out the tires that we just, uh, sent to K Bear. K Bear? Oh, Care Bear? Care Bear.
• 23:13
Care Bear Box? Yeah. Yeah. What, what'd you guys send him? We just sent him some Rogues. Some really tiny, super bristly race tires. Oh, yeah. Gonna make him even faster. Gotta get him off the couch and onto the bike.
• 23:28
That'll make him faster. [laughs] Oh, dear. Tupper Beck, Tupper Becker talking smack in his backyard. Oh, I am, yeah.
• 23:37
[laughs] I was using, uh, that was what Josh Spice posted on, uh, today on the Facebook of, uh, somehow an, an old episode of the radio show got blasted up [laughs] on the Facebook. Was that your good works there, Spice?
• 23:50
Not my problem. [laughs] A little encore? Maybe. I dunno. I dunno. We could encore from way back when. Yeah. So that's what we got coming up next.
• 23:59
Oh, yeah, there was, like, a episode 76 was posted or something like that recently. Right. Oh, yeah. With K Bear on it. Yeah. How does that happen? That's, uh, the- I dunno... the magic of the interwebs. Yeah.
• 24:11
People fucking up. I don't know. [laughs] Uh-oh, there's that word again. Oh, I dropped the F-bomb? That's all right- Oh, all right... 'cause we're, we're ex- Yeah, we're already an explicit rating at iTunes, so...
• 24:21
we're explicit. I already called somebody a MF-er, so- Oh, sorry, Dad... yeah. You'd be such a, you'd make me such a proud papa, Tupper. [laughs] Aw. So dude, I guess, uh, we're gonna roll on and, uh, talk about links.
• 24:39
All right. You wanna hang out or do you want to, uh, do you wanna hang up? I, I'm, I'm ready. I'm gonna hang up.
• 24:45
I got about 20 people here at Bonfire tonight, so I'm gonna go drink beer and talk bikes and skis and snow and bitch about the world. It'll be great. [laughs] All right. [laughs] Sounds fun. If, uh, Jeff is- Yep...
• 24:56
if Jeff Gilmore is there, give him a big hug from me. High five. Oh, I'll give him a big man hug for you. There you go. All right, bro. Thank you, gentlemen. It was a pleasure. Have fun.
• 25:06
Thanks for your support- Enjoy the podcast... on these contests, Tupper. It's great. Thanks very much. Hey, right back at you guys. I, I owe you big time. Thanks, guys. All right, man. Happy holidays. See ya. La, da.
• 25:16
Happy holidays. Indeed, and merry Christmas and happy Kwanzaa, and we got Hanukkah coming up here. We got, uh- Tupper Becker, ladies and gentlemen... uh From the old, uh, Becker Sewing and Design. It's the, uh, it's the
• 25:30
winter solstice coming up here- Coming up... pretty soon. Hey, before the winter solstice gets here- Yeah... why don't we take a break? Uh, I feel like a break. You look like a break.
• 25:41
One taste and you'll agree, you can't find a more fresh, flavorful, first-quality product than Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Texas Pete makes history with every batch.
• 25:52
Try mixing Texas Pete with melted butter as a dipping sauce for your next order of shrimp and you'll agree, nothing wakes up food like Texas Pete. TexasPete.com. Will Ross? Will Ross listens to Fat Bike Radio.
• 26:08
[upbeat music] This is what it sounds like on break here at Fat Bike Radio. [laughs] Hey. The fish is empty. I was trying to gouge stuff out of here.
• 26:22
I was not [laughs] having a great deal of, uh, of, uh, luck there getting it all, uh, out of there. The wine and the women.
• 26:40
And we're back. How about that break? [laughs] Guys, nothing like a little Don Dokken when we're, when we're taking a little break. Uh, what do we got going on? Hey, Fat Camp Show number nine.
• 26:55
Number nine, can you believe it? It's gonna drop on Saturday, D- December 26th. That's during our hiatus when, uh, we're gonna lay some, uh, some blasts from the past on you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What is your plan?
• 27:08
You had some great plan, and I, I, I- We have four interviews, all of super fast fat bike racers who also happen to be women. That's the first hiatus episode.
• 27:19
And the second one is the same thing, but for the men's elite race division. So, uh, these are all from last year, and big names, dude. Ned Overend, Will Ross. Big ups to those guys. John Lackey. You know? Uh, the, uh,
• 27:36
we, we get the superstars. Heather Bexton on the ladies' side. Yeah, Heather Bexton. Yeah, I remember- Sonja Alt-... some of those were great interviews.
• 27:42
These, the nice, the, I think the reason that this is worth doing for sure, aside from the fact that we know you still wanna listen to us even when we're not there, is that
• 27:51
I don't wanna let these things get lost in the past, so- Right... if you haven't gone back and listened to all the shows, these are some of the, the good parts.
• 27:58
Right, yeah, and it's a, it's a full show of interviews, so not a lot of yammering and giggling by, uh- [laughs]... by our crew there, um, yours truly.
• 28:08
Uh, it's mainly the, the guests talking and talking about racing and their careers and the current events of the day, so it will be, uh, an interesting listen.
• 28:19
I'm gonna listen, 'cause I always put them on the headphones and go for a ride on Friday morning. So I'm always like, "Come on, Sven, post that thing, man."
• 28:29
You know how many times I've gone back and watched that Gary Fisher video that we caught- [laughs]... at Interbike a couple of years ago?
• 28:34
It's like, just gems like that, you wanna, you wanna listen to them more than once, and I, I really think these interviews with these, these, uh, these athletes are worth hearing more than one time.
• 28:44
I usually get something more out of it when I listen to it. It's like in, in the heat of the moment, I might ask a question and listen to the answer, but I'm more worried, like, "Are we doing this right or wrong?"
• 28:54
Or whatever. Yeah. So when I go back and listen to it, especially when it, I'm editing it, it's like, "Oh, that's what they're talking about." Indeed. So, uh- So anyway, that's coming up on Saturday. Right.
• 29:05
So the, I think the, I don't know if I made the full point to this, that Fat Camp Show nine is gonna come in the middle there on December 26th, which is the day after Christmas, obviously. Mm-hmm.
• 29:15
And that's a Saturday, and that's fresh content. That's brand-new stuff. That's like everybody's- It just, we just keep coming at you with new stuff even when we're not here...
• 29:22
you could dress up in all your new fat biking accessories and your fat bike perfume and your fat bike eye makeup and go for a ride and listen to, uh, Fat Camp. Yeah. It's gonna be about grooming.
• 29:38
Maybe go ride some groomed trails, or maybe go groom some trails. Hey, you got, uh, the, the thing that, uh, I like out of that nine, uh, your e- your e-bike. What is, what is... S- The Surface 604... 604. Yeah.
• 29:54
It's, it's, uh... [laughs] Anyway, um, that story, I like the whole idea about the grooming. Yeah. Well, it's got- You gotta get some snow. That, that's such a great idea... it's got Dillinger fives on it right now.
• 30:03
Uh-huh. And I've got, it's some that I had studded up last year and took them out, but I'm putting them st- back in there. What are you gonna do, what are you gonna pull for a sled? What are you gonna use for grooming?
• 30:11
Don't know yet. Uh, we have that one from, uh, uh, Peter out in Vermont that is a pull behind for a person. Mm-hmm. It's a white Delrin one- Mm-hmm... that you put weights in.
• 30:20
I'm thinking of maybe doing your kind of, uh, with the, with the stabilizing poles on it like you did with the, with just the sled. Yeah, right, that pole, those pole, the poles.
• 30:27
But it's got, it, it does have some teeth that stick down and stuff like that, and, um, that would be my first thing to try. Cool.
• 30:34
I think what we learned about using that as human power last year is you wanna get out there right away with it. Yeah.
• 30:40
You don't wanna wait for a day or two or three, and especially f- through, you know, cycles of warm and cold.
• 30:46
Uh, so hopefully the day it snows, we can [laughs] hitch that thing up, so probably oughta engineer it all up before. Cool. River trails aren't far from here, right? Right. Yeah.
• 30:56
The, you know, the thing about the river trails is there's so much traffic in the city here, dog walkers, and hikers, and snowshoers, and even the occasional cross-country ski person gets lost down there.
• 31:05
Um, but when the river's frozen, cross country down that river is badass. Oh, cool. And we've ridden on the river on fat bikes. So, uh, but point is that the trails are, um...
• 31:14
They get packed down pretty good, but I think running that thing through there will knock the edges of the trail down, because you get that, like, eight-inch wide footpath. Mm-hmm.
• 31:23
And this would just, this is probably, uh, 20 inches, 24 inches wide. Gotcha. So I'm looking forward to that. I think it's gonna be a good thing. Right on.
• 31:33
Well, uh, speaking of grooming, you have a whole list of places that have started to- Mm... uh, open their doors and are grooming for fat bikes. Yep.
• 31:43
Yeah, it just, like, every time you turn around there's a story about some area that is, uh, opening up a golf club.
• 31:49
Who, who's doing one in Ketchum, Idaho, so they're gonna be able to use their golf course in the winter for fat bikers.
• 31:55
Uh, county parks in Michigan, uh, and, uh, there's a Nordic center in Alberta, Canada, that's doing it.
• 32:01
So it's like people are recognizing that folks wanna be outside, they wanna be riding their fat bikes, and I think they want kind of a, they want a good experience with it. Not everybody is, like, a super adventurer.
• 32:11
Right. Um, you know, those are great, uh, once or twice a year for me. Uh, but more often I wanna go for a couple hours and on something that I'm gonna enjoy, and that there's some amenities around it, too.
• 32:24
It's kind of a, it's a happening for me, man. [laughs] Not everybody can sit under a bridge and have a fire twice a year, you know? [laughs] That's like every, that's like every week under a bridge with a fire.
• 32:35
So this is something new, a nice experience. There you go. Around here, I don't know, county parks out, uh, or state parks definitely groom. County parks groom. Right.
• 32:46
The county park that is just four miles from my current house- Right, and but I'm just-... grooms... trying to think of some- I do the grooming...
• 32:52
some commercial places that are doing specifically grooming for fat bikes. I can't think of anybody, like a ski hill or a golf course or anything in Wisconsin off the top of my head. Alpine Valley. Oh, there you go.
• 33:03
Do they do it in the winter? I don't know. I know we've, I know we've played on that hill in the snow with Jameson before. Right. [laughs] Right, right. And there's the, uh, Sunnyvale that grooms specifically for...
• 33:15
But that's, but that's- Right, but that's in a park. Right. Park range. And it's, yeah. That's, uh, and that one's great. I've ridden that one before. That's what I'm talking about. That's a great experience there. Yeah.
• 33:23
Uh, they have the Badger State Game race there that, uh... Hmm, I'd like to go to that. I'm, I'd like to bring a live badger there. [laughs] Along with the polar bear? Are those guys gonna get along?
• 33:35
Um, I'm, I'm striking out on the, on the polar bear. Plus, I probably would get eaten, you know. Polar bears actually eat people, so. No. Right. Probably a bad idea. But a badger, on the other hand, what could go wrong?
• 33:49
Yeah. [laughs] Could, you could approve something. Stamp of approval. Ca-coosh. [laughs] Badger approved. Are you the badger from that Badger Bike Company? [growls] Right on, man.
• 34:04
Well, I think this is that, uh, that time in the show where we say, "Thanks, Surly. You guys make good bikes and stuff." Muchas gracias, amigos. Go ahead and check 'em- Surly bikes... out there. Yeah.
• 34:18
It's- Go to your local, uh, bike establishment and, uh, check out that pricing, dude... on those fat bikes. Ice cream truck, moon lander, and- Make your mom slap your mama... Pugsley Something like that.
• 34:30
Pugsley single speed. Indeed. Uh, surlybikes.com. [upbeat music] Ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka. You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's weekly dose of fat.
