- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the u con Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike
- 0:02Speaker 1: chris Bano joined by Dan Hurley as we catch up
- 0:05Speaker 1: with the Huskies have been very busy on court playing games. Dan,
- 0:10Speaker 1: three games six days, it's a it's almost like an
- 0:14Speaker 1: NBA kind of schedule. How did you guys handle that
- 0:16Speaker 1: in terms of prepping and recovering and resting to get
- 0:20Speaker 1: ready for the next one this past week?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you do, Uh, you know, Mike, obviously these are
- 0:26Speaker 2: these are finally conditioned, you know, finally conditioned athletes. I
- 0:30Speaker 2: think you know how how hard we practice, you know
- 0:34Speaker 2: how much work we put in in the in the
- 0:36Speaker 2: off season, and you know the intensity of the eleven
- 0:40Speaker 2: month a year program that we run. I think, uh,
- 0:43Speaker 2: you know prepares us for the for the riggers of
- 0:47Speaker 2: conference play.
- 0:49Speaker 3: You know, this is where you know, conference play.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You can you say, you could throw out the numbers
- 0:54Speaker 2: when conference play starts, Uh, you know, truly because everyone
- 0:58Speaker 2: knows each other so well, there's not much prep time
- 1:03Speaker 2: in between games. And the games are you know, extremely
- 1:08Speaker 2: extremely physical, more physical than the non conference games obviously,
- 1:13Speaker 2: so you know, it's it's it's a challenge, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 2: three games in six days, you know, playing against teams
- 1:20Speaker 2: that had less prep time or had excuse me, had
- 1:23Speaker 2: more prep time and more rest. Obviously we wish we
- 1:27Speaker 2: would have had a two and oh week, but to
- 1:29Speaker 2: be able to, you know, to go and and beat
- 1:33Speaker 2: a surging Georgetown team. Obviously, the I don't think the
- 1:37Speaker 2: score was a great indicator of how well we played,
- 1:41Speaker 2: you know, up until in the last several minutes.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotta give you credit. I mean, before the
- 1:46Speaker 1: Villanova game, we were talking about the fact that both
- 1:49Speaker 1: of those teams, you kind of Villanova score a lot
- 1:51Speaker 1: of eighty plus points and you said, well, it's a
- 1:54Speaker 1: big East Conference game, you might not see that. He
- 1:57Speaker 1: could be a slugfest. And I'm like, okay, then the
- 1:59Speaker 1: game in its mid sixties, and then again with Georgetown
- 2:02Speaker 1: it ends up mid sixties. How do you account for that?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Is it is the temple slowed down because you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: teams know each other so well, how does that happen?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it's just you know, the Big East games.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, the teams are so desperate
- 2:19Speaker 2: to win that they're you know, they're they're not giving
- 2:22Speaker 2: up transition baskets. Uh, so you're you're playing in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: half court versus set defense that uh knows you very well,
- 2:31Speaker 2: knows your personnel very well, knows your you're the things
- 2:36Speaker 2: that you do offensively very well, you know. And then
- 2:39Speaker 2: and then for us, obviously, we uh you know, we
- 2:42Speaker 2: we've we've been one of the best teams in the
- 2:45Speaker 2: country at not turning the ball over, you know, this
- 2:48Speaker 2: year and last year. But unfortunately for us, we've we've
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, we've caught the turnover bug unfortunately, and uh,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you know that's led to us not being able to
- 2:59Speaker 2: get into the seventies a higher. You know, you shoot
- 3:01Speaker 2: fifty seven percent from the field against Villanova, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and it's a game that you should win and you
- 3:07Speaker 2: should definitely score, should definitely break seventy.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, but we turned the ball over a lot. Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Same thing with the Georgetown game. You know, we were
- 3:15Speaker 2: playing really really well offensively and then we literally just
- 3:19Speaker 2: stopped scoring, you know, the last several minutes of the game.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I was kind of counting back looking at the play
- 3:25Speaker 1: by play of that game was strange. I mean, I
- 3:27Speaker 1: think I think you miss five or so shots, got
- 3:29Speaker 1: three block, shots, turned over three times. I Mean, that
- 3:33Speaker 1: game was a twenty three point game. With about eight
- 3:35Speaker 1: minutes left, it looked like you were home free as
- 3:38Speaker 1: much as you can be in any of these games.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But it didn't work out. It ended up being an
- 3:42Speaker 1: eight point victory. But does it really matter bottom line
- 3:45Speaker 1: for you and the coaching staff. Winning on the road
- 3:48Speaker 1: is always hard, You've always said that, and beating a
- 3:50Speaker 1: Georgetown team, as you said, has been surging. I thought
- 3:53Speaker 1: that was a pretty impressive win.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we played well and obviously the you know, the
- 3:59Speaker 2: late clock. I think there's always going to be an issue.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I think end of game situations, which you know generally
- 4:07Speaker 2: you know come down to you know, having players, you know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: multiple that can make plays with the ball in their hands,
- 4:14Speaker 2: but you.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Know, the live ball turnover is hurt.
- 4:17Speaker 2: You know, giving up three point plays like soft fouls
- 4:20Speaker 2: for three point plays, which stops the clock. It allows
- 4:24Speaker 2: Georgetown to set up their pressure. You know, obviously, you
- 4:28Speaker 2: know you're you're trying to It's a fine line because
- 4:31Speaker 2: you've got such a huge lead and burning thirty seconds
- 4:36Speaker 2: off the clock, you know, put you in position where
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know you can't lose the game.
- 4:42Speaker 3: When you play it that way.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Unfortunately, it just becomes ugly to watch but I'll trade
- 4:48Speaker 2: it ugly to watch. And you know, in an eight
- 4:52Speaker 2: point road win versus a team that you know, I
- 4:55Speaker 2: was able to filter Ina or or at least have
- 5:00Speaker 2: you know, pretty close to us as good a crowd
- 5:02Speaker 2: as they've had in a long time, and we're able
- 5:04Speaker 2: to beat somebody that I think really going into the game,
- 5:09Speaker 2: you know, really felt like they were going to get it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah, the Hoya has got everybody in DC excited lately.
- 5:14Speaker 1: They had ten and one record at home, put seventeen
- 5:17Speaker 1: thousand plus in the seats.
- 5:18Speaker 3: The more people that.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Have been dan to a Hooya game and a thirteen years,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I mean that tells you how much Ed Cooley's kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of got the excitement going there. And I watched the
- 5:28Speaker 1: crowd coming in. They were pretty jacked up. Everyone is
- 5:31Speaker 1: to play Yukon obviously back to back defending champs, but
- 5:35Speaker 1: it's kind of nice in a way to see Georgetown
- 5:38Speaker 1: start to turn a corner a little bit and they're
- 5:40Speaker 1: gonna be a tough They're gonna be a tough out
- 5:42Speaker 1: here down the last half of the season.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, you look at you know, the crowds
- 5:47Speaker 2: that you know, even when we play at MSG and
- 5:51Speaker 2: We're not playing a regional opponent. We're playing Gonzaga from
- 5:54Speaker 2: out west, and you know, we packed the garden. You know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: you could see obviously Hinkel is Uh it's part of
- 6:02Speaker 2: the culture of Indiana, you know. But every time that
- 6:05Speaker 2: they play at Hankel, they've got to sell out crowds,
- 6:08Speaker 2: So not much to see there.
- 6:10Speaker 3: But uh, you know, certainly when we go to De
- 6:13Speaker 3: Paul and you have twice as.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Many fans at your game as was there, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: their other Big East games, Uh, even without students on
- 6:24Speaker 2: campus there, and and uh obviously you know, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: it's certainly you know ed what Ed's doing at Georgetown.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He's got the excitement back with the crowd there.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But we uh, you know, I heard some Yukon people
- 6:37Speaker 2: in the stands there, and uh, you know, and also too,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think the Georgetown Yukon you know match up brought
- 6:44Speaker 2: a lot of their fans out, uh, you know to
- 6:46Speaker 2: the game.
- 6:47Speaker 3: It was, uh you felt like the old Big East. Yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 3: it really did.
- 6:51Speaker 1: All right, Dan Hurley is with us. Would be back
- 6:53Speaker 1: in just a moment. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 6:55Speaker 1: Coaches Show on lear Field
