Transcript
- 0:00Hello again, Joe here, and this is another omnibus, this time
- 0:07from way back at the start of Hamster with Blonde Penknife.
- 0:11It's like 3 years ago, 3 1/2 years ago, the very first
- 0:16recording I did with the glorious Pete Lambert where we
- 0:19discussed Earthshop, which is one of his absolute favourites.
- 0:23Honestly, it was like we'd known each other for years By the end
- 0:26of that call. Absolutely glorious
- 0:29conversation. I will apologise about the sound
- 0:32quality. This is the early days of
- 0:34Hamster where I hadn't quite figured out how to get the sound
- 0:38right. Didn't really care one or the
- 0:41other. I didn't think anyone was going
- 0:42to listen, so I don't think I put too much effort into it.
- 0:46But yeah, so poor Pete does sound like he's in a in a toilet
- 0:52recording, unfortunately, but it's still perfectly like
- 0:56legible and really enjoyable. I hope you enjoy it a lot.
- 1:01Revisiting this one has been an absolute joy.
- 1:03So yeah, all four episodes of Earth Shock.
- 1:06Enjoy. A.
- 1:42Hamster with a blunt penknife for doing.
- 1:43Quicker, quicker, quicker. Quicker.
- 1:48Welcome back to Hamster with a Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who
- 1:51commentary podcast. Yeah, I have got my you know, I
- 1:54can see you laughing. I have got my mouth around that
- 1:56neck. Oh, sorry, that's disgusting.
- 1:59I should start again, but I'm going to keep.
- 2:01Spoken yet, I. Know I'm, I'm going to, I'm
- 2:02going to keep going. I am here today with I'm going
- 2:06to call you a very special guest because I am because two
- 2:12separate people contacted me and said you have got to get this
- 2:15guy on your podcast. Your name is Pete Lambert.
- 2:20Why don't you say hello Pete and introduce yourself.
- 2:22Off you go. Hello, I'm Pete and I've
- 2:25contacted you twice using two of my aliases because I really want
- 2:28to be on this podcast. That's not actually true.
- 2:31I'm not organised enough to do that, but it's yeah, so I'm I'm
- 2:35on Twitter as Prof under score quite a mess.
- 2:38I sometimes go on track one. Podcast.
- 2:40And sometimes go on flight to entirety.
- 2:42And I love Doctor Who, and the story that we're on today is
- 2:46right at my right at the genesis of my Doctor Who found them.
- 2:49This is this is me turning from a kid who likes watching Doctor
- 2:52Who into someone who's spending all of his pocket money on it,
- 2:55basically for the rest of his life.
- 2:56How old were you when you first watched this?
- 3:00I was 7/7 and 1/2, so you know and we've just had we've got a
- 3:06Riddle. So the show's all new.
- 3:08It's the cast's all young and this was the series that really
- 3:12got me into it. I'd watched the five faces
- 3:15repeats before so I knew this show was all about change.
- 3:18But ultimately it's about a happy family and and and they do
- 3:21a bit of bickering but they're exploring universe and there's
- 3:23one character and it's quite a lot like me and it's really fun
- 3:26seeing him going around with his with his stupid hair Decker and
- 3:29his terrible pyjamas and. I bet he's going to have a happy
- 3:33ending, isn't he? Oh, every, every.
- 3:35At the end of every episode. He's always so happy.
- 3:37And at the end of this one, I know he's going to be super
- 3:39happy. He.
- 3:40He. Is because he wants to have more
- 3:42Avengers in space. Although he did enjoy the buffet
- 3:45in Black Orchid's previous story, he was blowing my mind as
- 3:48a 7 year old that that two weeks ago we had terrelep tools
- 3:52causing the plague of London. Then suddenly every next, next
- 3:55week, and this is, you know you're getting two episodes a
- 3:56week. It's your Monday and Tuesday
- 3:58after school at RFT after school and and and suddenly everyone's
- 4:03doing an Agatha Christie. And Andrea's just enjoying his,
- 4:05the best buffet he's ever had. And I'm glad about that, because
- 4:09it might be the last buffet he's.
- 4:10Ever. Oh, bless.
- 4:11You it's Do you know? What is it?
- 4:13Is it's a season? Isn't it which kind of
- 4:16slingshots between genres like dramatically?
- 4:20Yeah. Were you even?
- 4:20Born tell me. What was it, 8081?
- 4:26Yeah, yeah, Spring 82. So I was two.
- 4:28So yeah, I I, I. My first Doctor episode was
- 4:31Battlefield episode 2, so I came in a bit late, so I didn't.
- 4:36I wasn't even have to watch it for.
- 4:37Episode One. Where were you for episode one?
- 4:39The lowest ever ratings of the classic series?
- 4:41If you turned it a week earlier, it might it.
- 4:42May have survived. I know, I know.
- 4:44Do you know what, though? I remember seeing Battlefield 2,
- 4:46and I don't remember seeing any of the rest of that season
- 4:49because that traumatised me so much.
- 4:51I was convinced that the girl, that's all I knew her as had
- 4:54drowned And that was enough, my mum.
- 4:56So when the series end, I knew it had come to an end because my
- 4:59friends were talking about it and I was like, well, I'll
- 5:01start, you know, I'm a year older.
- 5:02The next time it's coming on. Oh wait.
- 5:04Yeah, it's not coming. Back, yeah.
- 5:07Comes back every year. 2005, That was a long, bloody wait.
- 5:11I said no. Sorry, 1996.
- 5:14And they never and they never did explain what happened to
- 5:16her. But I did read those new
- 5:19adventures in between, and I really wish I hadn't.
- 5:22But I at least I found out what happened.
- 5:25To. Her.
- 5:26Oh, you did? Oh, OK, look, before we start,
- 5:28I'd also have to say please, please, please do yourself a
- 5:32favour, send your children out of the room and go and find the
- 5:36Trial of Time Lord podcast episode that Pete was on
- 5:40defending. God rest his soul.
- 5:44Time Lash, which I heard today and laughed my head off.
- 5:48It is extremely X races. So.
- 5:52Yeah, make sure that there is no family around you, but that's
- 5:55that was a lot of fun. I I can only assume.
- 5:58Thank you. Yeah.
- 5:59Who Who Trial is, is sadly no longer with us as a podcast.
- 6:02He has retired. I don't.
- 6:04I think I might have. I might have.
- 6:05Scared him off for good because I defended Time Flash.
- 6:08Time Flash. And then I was determined to go
- 6:09on it and and defend all from 55.
- 6:12That's another podcast. Greatest episode ever.
- 6:14That's another thing that that's not for now, all right.
- 6:17Not the greatest episode. You know what, Pete?
- 6:19No one. No one's chosen a Jody yet, so
- 6:22we will talk. If we're still speaking in 90
- 6:25minutes time, put me on your list.
- 6:27Because I haven't. Offended you.
- 6:28You you could not do that. OK, well, I am queued up and
- 6:32ready to go into shock. Episode one, if you are let's.
- 6:35Do it, Yeah. I'll count as in, then in 54321.
- 6:42Let's go these. Tiles.
- 6:47Anything more 80s than these tiles?
- 6:50I know, and it's so funny that they Davidson they have, they
- 6:54had to come up with something because of his hair not being
- 6:56all curly like Tom Baker's hair was, which was the original
- 6:59inspiration for this title sequence.
- 7:00It was such Tom Baker was like. Such a vivid silhouette, wasn't
- 7:03he that kind of curly hair? Yeah, it's just everything is
- 7:08grown, rising. He's.
- 7:09Too young to be doctor? Yeah, what?
- 7:11Would you think of Peter Davidson as the Doctor?
- 7:14No, at the time it was just perfect.
- 7:15It was like, yeah. His new era, it's the 80s.
- 7:18He's so young. It's awesome.
- 7:20And so I'm never really shaking that off straight away.
- 7:24The music here is just so sinister and foreboding.
- 7:31It's it's Malcolm Clarke, isn't it?
- 7:33And I find his scores go from the Sea Devils to Enlightenment,
- 7:39which is like a huge difference. And yeah, and and just
- 7:44incredible that they span those different eras, because I
- 7:46wouldn't. I remember what, you know what
- 7:47it is as a kid I thought, oh, it's not like, oh, old in the
- 7:4970s old stuff. It's all it's all new now.
- 7:52But actually these people have really got the hang of this.
- 7:55Is this this the helmet, The helmets?
- 7:56The. Helmets.
- 7:57The earth shock helmets. They should be.
- 7:59They should I. I want these in the new series.
- 8:01Why haven't we had earth shock helmets?
- 8:02I. Swear they turn up again though,
- 8:04aren't they in like Frontiers again?
- 8:07And try the Time Lord. And the Dafro's slaves are all
- 8:12there. Oh.
- 8:13Yeah, of course they are. Yeah, there's another.
- 8:15One I. Think there's another one.
- 8:16I mean, they must have shown up in Blake 7 at some point.
- 8:19They were swapping. Flops all the time.
- 8:21I think I'll be too late for Blake Seven with this.
- 8:23Yeah, actually I think you're right.
- 8:26Now let's have a a. Proper, proper big clackety
- 8:29machine with proper clackety keyboards.
- 8:31None. None of this.
- 8:32Waving your hand in the air. This is like the only the only
- 8:36location work in the whole story, isn't it?
- 8:39Yeah, yeah. And it looks so good on the
- 8:41Blu-ray because I don't know if they got the original film still
- 8:44but it, but it just it really takes you there.
- 8:47I'm watching the the SD version, the cranky out version, so it
- 8:51still looks. Good keeping it old school.
- 8:54Oh, this fella. What's his name?
- 8:55James Warwick. Is that his name he plays?
- 8:58With the moustache. Yeah, he's so marvellous.
- 9:00And he's as. Soon as I see him now, I think,
- 9:03oh, he's the Brigadier, he's, he's a future Brigadier, isn't
- 9:06he? I don't know if that was
- 9:07deliberate at the time. Maybe, Maybe.
- 9:09I I love his performance when he's down in The Cave.
- 9:11So he he gives like a stratospheric.
- 9:15With that. Mustache.
- 9:16With that mustache, you could probably appear in some other
- 9:1880s videos as well. I think I've seen a few.
- 9:21Was it if I could? Go to Hollywood Video.
- 9:22Probably in that. Oh, so sorry.
- 9:24I was talking about completely different types of videos there.
- 9:27I'll be quiet. So this woman, Professor Kyle,
- 9:32Yeah, she's very peripheral to this story, isn't she?
- 9:37Yeah, she's. And you think you might think
- 9:40this story is going to be her, her story?
- 9:43But. So spooky things in the dark.
- 9:45Spooky dogs. Spooky robots in the caves, she
- 9:50But they're all there to set this up and to make it real and
- 9:53like. I love all that.
- 9:56I mean, you can tell where it's. All going down again must be
- 9:58hard. That's he realises that going
- 10:00down again must be hard and he should now with that mustache.
- 10:04Have you ever heard that line before?
- 10:06I think we probably both. But with this, all this hardware
- 10:11on display, lots of soldiers. It's got Eric's award stamped
- 10:14all over. It doesn't.
- 10:16It it really has, yeah. You've got but.
- 10:18You know, again, it's not, it's not aliens got to it's it's.
- 10:22But yeah, this is this is a new era, just really finding its
- 10:25feet. You put it in the room that
- 10:28jumps around and you've watched Kinder lately and like, you're
- 10:30saying, you know, black. This is the episode after Part 2
- 10:33of Black. Orchid it just isn't it.
- 10:34Preposterous that it's the same show.
- 10:36What other TV show Fantastic has done this like has jumped about
- 10:40in Toad and style so much? Yeah.
- 10:43And I think for the kids like me who watched the Five Faces
- 10:46season before where it was the repeat where it was like
- 10:49Carnival and monsters and Vadapolis and the the Crotons,
- 10:55they were all really different styles.
- 10:57So that sort of maybe warmed us up ready for a season that was
- 11:00going to be just so different. I'll.
- 11:03Tell you what this is doing as well.
- 11:04It's lots of really short scenes, isn't it like?
- 11:08Yeah. You skip back just like one or
- 11:09two seasons and you've got these really long, talky sort of
- 11:13dialogue scenes. Whereas I think what I was
- 11:16watching the special features Peter Greenway, the infamous
- 11:20Peter Grim Wade, saying, you know, that he had like maybe 150
- 11:25like set ups for one episode. Yeah, yeah, it's it's just
- 11:30inconceivable that they decided to do this and and for for four
- 11:35episodes of of the TV series and they and got away with it and
- 11:39that it that it all lands. Here's your favorite.
- 11:43Yeah, I. Hope he's going to be here for
- 11:45years. He's growing up, you see.
- 11:48Did did you have a star chart on your bedroom wall like that Was
- 11:51Is this like a realistic depiction of your bedroom at the
- 11:53time? Oh God the.
- 11:56Fuck it is. Well he's got a kind of gorge
- 12:02thing behind him left that I don't quite recognise, but and I
- 12:05and I didn't have those. I wish I could have those
- 12:08triangle space walls. Do you know I only got the?
- 12:11Sorry, do you know where those triangles first came from?
- 12:13Do you know the story they first appeared in?
- 12:15Because they they're a regular feature.
- 12:17It's Pertwee. It's season nine.
- 12:20It's the Mutants they first appeared in the Mutants on the
- 12:23Skybase. They are.
- 12:24The legacy of the Mutants, that's fantastic.
- 12:26I knew they've been around forever, but they're on the
- 12:28adventure game as well. I watched a bit of that brick
- 12:30box the other day. What's that?
- 12:31What's the adventure game? So that that's that was a sort
- 12:36of games that we'd the science fiction themed game show Chris
- 12:39Show that was done in the early 80s, around the same time as
- 12:41this where people guests like Maggie Philbin and Keith Chegwin
- 12:45had to do. It was basically like The
- 12:47Crystal Maze, but really, really slow and without The Crystal or
- 12:50The Maze. But that was coming off of it.
- 12:52They had the strong puzzles. It's like an escape room.
- 12:54It was a. Low stakes, escape room.
- 12:56But at the end, you had the thing where you get zapped by
- 12:57lasers and like, oh, we're really sorry, Keith Checkman
- 13:01died this. Week and you?
- 13:02Tune into Saturday Superstore just to check he was really
- 13:05actually you had actually survived his visit to that
- 13:07planet. So maybe a little bit too young
- 13:10for that. Did you see that?
- 13:11That's it okay. That's it.
- 13:13Had running water going down it to kind of show that it was a
- 13:16cave in a cave. Yeah, and it's so dark.
- 13:19People. Got early 80s.
- 13:20It's so overlit, not with a bit of grim waves in charge.
- 13:22And I. Saw an interview with Jana
- 13:25Fielding way back where she was saying that this was recorded a
- 13:29long time ago, but as she was saying she didn't.
- 13:31People asked if she had fond memories of Earth Rock and she
- 13:33said well not really because it was the hardest work we ever
- 13:37had. We haven't didn't have fun
- 13:39making Earth shock because it was just such a mad pace of
- 13:42shooting and I can and that shocks me because I'm like it's
- 13:45amazing, how could that not be the best thing ever to do?
- 13:48But I guess at the time you get to, you realise what what
- 13:50they're meaning. What's interesting because you
- 13:52get. This Doctor Who.
- 13:53This is Doctor Who at 200% maximum.
- 13:56Look at the stories in this season that had a director that
- 13:58went for like the oh, let's all have fun and have a jolly time.
- 14:01Things like The Visitation. There isn't really any
- 14:04atmosphere in that at all. I would gladly sacrifice Janet
- 14:07Fielding's good fun if the end result.
- 14:10Is something as good as this? Yeah, they're to entertain.
- 14:13Me. Sorry, Janet.
- 14:14So I love that line. So I was serious.
- 14:15No, to tear it on you. And it really sounds like it's
- 14:18kind of something at the end, doesn't it?
- 14:21But they are expecting viewers to remember stuff that happened
- 14:23a year ago. And that's.
- 14:25Fine. Soap operas do that.
- 14:26Other dramas do that. It's that's a normal thing for
- 14:30ATV series to do. It's not adding it's it's it's
- 14:35lines through it. But, and you know, people say in
- 14:38the 80s you didn't get plot arcs in Doctor Who.
- 14:43Character arc, Yeah. And I love this kind of, I'm
- 14:47going to say dreadful, but I mean it in the most loving way.
- 14:51Soap opera element that runs through like Davidson's time.
- 14:54All the kind of. Bickering in the titles.
- 14:56I'll do. Something different the Doctor
- 14:58Who just hadn't had sort of hidden from before, and for good
- 15:02reason. I mean, it's fine to say we're
- 15:04not going to bother with this, that or the other because we're
- 15:06telling this adventure story, but doesn't mean that they never
- 15:09did it. I think the trouble is when they
- 15:12were doing like these 25 minute sort of action adventure
- 15:15episodes, you've got to get to the point pretty quickly so you
- 15:18can't hang around the TARDIS for too long.
- 15:20And when they did start doing it in like Colin Baker's time in
- 15:23Season 22, you really started to feel it.
- 15:27Yeah, I think I said it is a real shame they didn't do
- 15:30another. I think they would learn that
- 15:31lesson and would have done a second series differently.
- 15:33But they had the idea of making like a episode one twice as long
- 15:38and then telling the rest of the story in 45 minutes.
- 15:40second-half. She's good, right?
- 15:42She's good when she's. She gets sick.
- 15:44I've. Heard people say that that she's
- 15:45a bit wooden. Or.
- 15:46Does not. I don't think she's.
- 15:48Professor Kyle, I think. She's sorry, Professor Kyle.
- 15:50Yeah, Professor Kyle's like. She's just an.
- 15:53Archaeologist Yeah, she's not. She's not super kick ass Laura
- 15:56Croft. She's someone who was down there
- 15:57looking at fossils and suddenly one of her mates are dead.
- 16:00I swear. Later on she picks up a gun and
- 16:02it's like, you know, I'm, I'm heading out.
- 16:03They stop her because she's going to be useless, but.
- 16:08Bless her. Look at the staging here this
- 16:12TARDIS. Okay, I adore this 80s TARDIS,
- 16:16but the few times they turn the lights down it's like 1,000,000%
- 16:20more. Atmospheric, yeah.
- 16:22Yeah, when the Black Guardian turns up, yeah, it.
- 16:24Goes orange. Looks fantastic like next year.
- 16:27But would you remember? The.
- 16:29The four of them, they're never stood still.
- 16:30The four of them are in these TARDIS scenes.
- 16:32They're they're going around and and and you know there's.
- 16:34There's depth and. They're just sort of circling
- 16:36the console to talk to each other.
- 16:38It's all really. You know, why don't you?
- 16:40They're like, we've got to make this set look interesting.
- 16:42Just keep moving. Keep moving.
- 16:43Yeah, yeah. Oh, I love that door, That door
- 16:47control, that massive red knob. Yeah, now people overuse the
- 16:51word iconic, but that's our 80s. TARDIS.
- 16:53Door control is a is absolutely iconic.
- 16:56Oh, it becomes an an iconic knob.
- 16:59Yeah, I've been called that before, you know.
- 17:03The. It becomes like a it's less
- 17:06dramatic when it has its five Doctors reboot.
- 17:10Isn't it? The door control?
- 17:11Oh. Because it won't.
- 17:12Because it's all more. Snazzy and and.
- 17:14And. That actually looks really cool.
- 17:17Is is this how you wanted to spend your?
- 17:18Life. Spending an evening doing a
- 17:20commentary talking about TARDIS door controls.
- 17:28One of. The readings is.
- 17:29Ectopic. What does that mean?
- 17:31What does that even mean? It means.
- 17:34One of the life forms has two hearts and the.
- 17:37Incidental music is. Going to sound a bit like the
- 17:39Doctor Who's theme for a. Moment.
- 17:40Look at the lighting there. With the TARDIS in the back,
- 17:42that is. And that dinosaur, yeah.
- 17:45And this is a corner of a. Small studio and they just put
- 17:49they put so much thought into the there's little pools of
- 17:52light on on Tegan and missus faces and the the Doctor's got
- 17:55his hat on and is in shadow and. That's it.
- 17:58It was only on screen for five. Seconds I've used, I've used
- 18:01Tegan's line here, which is like breathe deeply and relax so many
- 18:05times. Has.
- 18:06It. People look at me like I'm very
- 18:09straight, but there was AI, remember.
- 18:11There was like a Christmas ident of the Doctor, Adrick, Tegan and
- 18:15Nyssa going Merry Christmas in that set.
- 18:19And every time I see her, I think, oh.
- 18:20Yeah, it was that. Wasn't it?
- 18:22Davidson puts his arm out in front of Adrick so he's like,
- 18:25you can't see him. I swear they were bullying that
- 18:28kid on set, you know? Yep.
- 18:30Now then. But all the work that they've
- 18:33been doing so far, establishing the real tension of these gut of
- 18:37these troopers and Professor Kyle means that we're totally on
- 18:41board with with we understand that they are going to think the
- 18:43Doctor and his friends are guilty.
- 18:44That's such a Doctor Who trolled.
- 18:46But if they just turn up and it just happens, it's not so
- 18:48exciting. But we know these people and we
- 18:50understand why they're going to think that these people, the the
- 18:53TARDIS crew are the culprits. It's not just, oh, here, I've
- 18:56been captured again. They've taken.
- 18:58They haven't just assumed it, they've taken the story taste of
- 19:01time to really build it at first.
- 19:02And it's not subtle, but having the dinosaur bones and giving
- 19:07the explanation as to how the dinosaurs went extinct, I know
- 19:11that's like an 80s thing. Bringing up something in episode
- 19:13one, like Hexachromite gas that becomes comes absolutely vital
- 19:17in episode 4. Yeah.
- 19:20And at this point, you don't, of course you don't know that this
- 19:23is we have no idea at this point that this that's going to have
- 19:27any relevance later because Doctor Who's one thing that
- 19:29never happens in Doctor Who around this time recently
- 19:32anyway, all right, no immediately thinking of loads of
- 19:35examples, but time table, you don't get time table in Doctor
- 19:37Who's toys often. You do get it every couple of
- 19:40years. But.
- 19:41Go back five years and that's all we had.
- 19:44Yeah. So the things get really going
- 19:47down. Sorry, in a minute, you sent me.
- 19:49Take a. Drink, she just said.
- 19:50She's going down. Oh, everything right.
- 19:52OK, well I have one here, so yeah, yeah.
- 19:54Have you not been OK? You sent me a GIF, GIF or GIF.
- 19:58I'm keep asking everybody this GIF, GIF.
- 20:01The guy who invented it wanted it to be GIF, but he's wrong.
- 20:04He's too late. He's out of the traps.
- 20:05Is GIF. Well, I'm going to say start.
- 20:06The start of the word GIF just start of a gift.
- 20:09Given that you are a mastery of gifts on Twitter, honestly it's
- 20:13so funny. I'm going to say take you as the
- 20:15authority on this, but you sent me a GIF of something very
- 20:20similar to a gruesome effect in this episode earlier today.
- 20:23Oh. Yeah, yeah, I'll retweet that.
- 20:28It's amazing. The guy who did it is brilliant.
- 20:31Look at the lights and then you see someone fall over and you
- 20:34can't tell which one it is. And then she comes into the
- 20:36light, and you see that it's the.
- 20:36Professor. I mean, it's Doctor Hero.
- 20:38Of course it is the woman, isn't it?
- 20:41But she has a Spain, her ankle and yeah.
- 20:44And there are female. Troopers too so.
- 20:46Again, that. You.
- 20:47Wouldn't have got that. I don't even notice as a 7 year
- 20:52old and there's there's a bit later on as well with with
- 20:55soldiers on the ship dog. He's always meant to pop back
- 20:58and find out. Oh, I wonder.
- 21:03Oh, Snyder. Snyder's wounded party.
- 21:08It's the fact that it's kind of green gunk with like blood in it
- 21:12as well. It's really grim.
- 21:16Hashtag released the Snyder Cut. There should be an extended
- 21:19version of their shot just so that we can use that hashtag.
- 21:21Hashtag, right. At this point, having become a
- 21:25Doctor Who fan the year before and bought my first target
- 21:28novel, which was Carnival Monsters, because I've just seen
- 21:30it on TV. And then I bought the Cybermen,
- 21:33and then I got all the Cybermen ones.
- 21:35It was obvious the Cybermen were the best things ever.
- 21:37And at this point, I'm just sitting there thinking nothing
- 21:41about Cybermen at all. Because the one thing you know
- 21:43about Cybermen is they haven't been in it since the 1970s,
- 21:46which was a million years ago, and it's such a shame that
- 21:48they're never coming back. But these underground robots
- 21:50look cool. So you would have had no clue
- 21:53this first cliffhanger would have blown your mind, yeah.
- 21:56No. And you know, I think I might
- 21:58even have been revenge reading Revenge of the Cybermen around
- 22:02that week because I was powering to it more.
- 22:04It's so annoying because I obviously I came to a classic
- 22:07who with all of this knowledge, so I knew what monsters were.
- 22:11The programme guide was out at that point, so I just knew
- 22:13everything. Snyder, sorry.
- 22:17The the lights going out. So that's that's like an alien
- 22:19influence, isn't it? The, the the scanner with the
- 22:22lights going out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:24Yeah. I don't.
- 22:25Know actually. Because that's more.
- 22:27That's an alien. Oh no, it's an alien, isn't it?
- 22:28Yeah, but it's an Aliens. The sequel More.
- 22:31How do you turn it? Human beings who got a puddle.
- 22:34In reducing robots to stood over a pile of green goo is
- 22:38terrifying. There's such a like a like a
- 22:41simple design that's so effective.
- 22:44Yeah, Android. You can see why they went back
- 22:46for the Rasta Mori robot. Yeah, well, maybe there's a
- 22:51theory in David Banks's Cybermen book he postulates that the
- 22:54Cybermen in the Death Zone and Gallifrey saw the Raston Warrior
- 22:56robot sent and sent plans of it back and copied it, and that's
- 23:00what they built those robots on, based those robots on later.
- 23:03Well, let's be honest though, there are some pretty wild
- 23:05theories in that book. I mean, he tries to tie together
- 23:09the entirety of the Cyberman plot line, doesn't he?
- 23:12It's. Yeah, he does, Yeah.
- 23:13Yeah. Which at that point was up to
- 23:15attack. I think attack had just come
- 23:17out. I mean, I think he updated it
- 23:18for Silver Nemesis as well. Not as many as it's a.
- 23:20Really complicated family tree with loads of dotted lines.
- 23:23What's his name? Lance Parkin, Who tries to plot
- 23:25out the entire History of Doctor Who in the Universe, volume 78,
- 23:30out soon. This guy playing Walters, the
- 23:35guy with the scanner up on the surface he's so good because it
- 23:38hinges on him if he was just unconvincing or or doing over.
- 23:43Nobody is is overacting in this and it's fine.
- 23:46I love it when a dog do act. It goes over the top of the IT
- 23:48and we have a bit of fun with it, but.
- 23:51You kind of need it in this though, don't you?
- 23:52To maintain the atmosphere, the tension, like if you were taken
- 23:55out by like a pants by performance.
- 23:58This week we're doing it dead serious and and next week we'll
- 24:01be having a right old laugh and doing a panto with Anthony
- 24:03Engley and as Alibaba. But this week we're going really
- 24:07going to the. Same league.
- 24:08Don't make me think about colleagues.
- 24:10Alam Shalom. He's actually.
- 24:16He's also super handsome as well, I should point that out.
- 24:19Anthony Ailey. No the the the fellow up above
- 24:22on the. Scanner.
- 24:24I mean, I don't know your. If you like, if you like the
- 24:26satanic type, Anthony Ailey. Very handsome.
- 24:31He's a real character. Listen to his autobiography if
- 24:33you get a chance. No, sorry, it's not
- 24:35autobiography of him on audible. It's really funny.
- 24:37The woman who wrote it had to scrape around because he was so
- 24:40private, but she gets some amazing anxios about him.
- 24:43Very fun with using the C word and often got banned from
- 24:46playing cricket because of it. Do you know this kind of bashing
- 24:49a keyboard, acting and looking like you're doing something that
- 24:52is a real skill, you know? I I bet he workshops that and
- 24:57and he's only on. Location, yeah.
- 25:00He never gets. Even to go in the studio.
- 25:04I think Peter Davidson said, didn't he, That he said to John
- 25:06Nathan Turner, Can you just say every Doctor Who called the
- 25:08story of caves because they're so effective?
- 25:11Let's stop going to space stations.
- 25:13Let's do it in case. But they it's a real and again,
- 25:17full credit to Grim Wade for making these caves look so good.
- 25:21I mean, you're right, you can see a line sometimes, honestly.
- 25:23But they weren't made for that. Oh, this sequence hit.
- 25:26So it's the the troopers coming towards the camera.
- 25:30The camera goes through smoke, the remains and they.
- 25:34Tread in. The slime, oh.
- 25:36Gosh almighty, that is grim. And then don't the don't the
- 25:42androids come up behind them or in front of them?
- 25:46Or do they mistake them for the for For Davidson?
- 25:49I can't remember that. All.
- 25:50No, I I think there we go. Here they go.
- 25:52Yeah. Well, we're still 5 minutes from
- 25:53the end or or three or 4 minutes from the end.
- 25:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:57Yeah, you're right. Yeah.
- 25:58Like, this is exactly the sort of thing the new series can't do
- 26:02anymore. Is it an episode one like this
- 26:04with lots of suspense and tension?
- 26:06Yeah, and and the character. Yeah.
- 26:10Sometimes agonised screen just did you get.
- 26:13That, Yeah. Oh, actually by.
- 26:18Sergeant Mitchell. I just heard jangling, so there
- 26:21was jangling on the on the. Yeah, that's an.
- 26:24Interesting choice of words. But yeah like they all this will
- 26:27be done in like a 5 minute pre credits wouldn't it in the new
- 26:30series and it would lose so much.
- 26:32Yeah, and. You know, at this point we just
- 26:37we. Don't know which of these
- 26:37characters this story is really going to be about.
- 26:40And it's, it's and is it? Oh, is this a story about life
- 26:44in On Earth in the 25th, 26th century?
- 26:47Yeah. So far it seems to be.
- 26:50And even like come episode 3, isn't it when it changes
- 26:53location completely, you still don't really know what this
- 26:56story is about. Yeah.
- 27:00It's actually about Adric and he's the one that's not part of
- 27:03the action at the moment. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:05And and and this is, it's sort of the kind of thing that people
- 27:09always say, oh, they always wasted characters and somebody
- 27:11wasn't doing something one week. But like that's just, that's
- 27:13fine. You watch an episode of Dallas
- 27:15and one week. Bobby.
- 27:16Hasn't got much to do because it's a Jr. episode you watch.
- 27:19Look. At Star Trek.
- 27:20Yeah, yeah, exactly, they say. Oh, I love that line.
- 27:25Too many people have fought for you.
- 27:29Too many people are dead for you to play.
- 27:30That's it. Thank you too.
- 27:32Many people too many. People are fooled now.
- 27:35Look, my misquoting is infamous, yeah.
- 27:40What? Dear boy.
- 27:43OK, so we're heading up to a Punch the Air cliffhanger.
- 27:49And it's so unusual, isn't it? Because I think before this you
- 27:51always would have had the side men in the title in some way or
- 27:55another. The Daleks in the title of they
- 27:56were going to appear so. Oh, and Andrew is getting to do
- 27:59some acting in the TARDIS on his own and some talking music.
- 28:01There's this thing going and he's What's it coming from?
- 28:03What's that noise? It's marvellous, isn't it?
- 28:06Like he can't even walk across the set convincingly sometimes,
- 28:09can he? But how can you not walk
- 28:11convincingly that? Is.
- 28:14I probably couldn't walk across the room convincingly when I was
- 28:177. So, like, like, were you behind
- 28:22Andrew, then seven years old. Was he somebody there?
- 28:25Yeah, you were rooting. For oh God, yeah, I mean when
- 28:28we. Played doctor in the playground
- 28:29at school. I wanted to be Adric.
- 28:31I was like because I want to be a.
- 28:32Mathematical. Genius.
- 28:33Hey, I. Love you.
- 28:34Right now, I just think that's. Wonderful.
- 28:36I. Was going to say can we play
- 28:42Adric in this stuff? But we'll maybe we'll do that
- 28:44off camera and I love the fact that they've got the.
- 28:52And then the robots burst in and and again, you're just looking
- 28:54at you expect. And there's such a good little.
- 28:56Jump moment because you're expecting some of the bomb to do
- 28:59something and suddenly the the robots are there and.
- 29:02Did you see that? Car straight to the remains and
- 29:04then swooping across to the action like he's trying to make
- 29:08this so dynamic. Yeah, yeah, and really good gun
- 29:12sounds. Androids.
- 29:14Oh, who's could these androids be?
- 29:15Are you watching with the new effects or the original?
- 29:19No original. So you've got the you've got the
- 29:24candy cane stripes, yes. Yes, but I'm not.
- 29:29I don't object to your face being done and I watch them once
- 29:32and think that's quite creative and then I'll never watch them
- 29:34again. Well, I've had.
- 29:34A conversation about this recently.
- 29:36You know, I think. I think the overall opinion is,
- 29:38whoa, I'm going to shut up. It's all gone red.
- 29:41Why is it all gone red? Whoa.
- 29:47Destroy them. Destroy them at once.
- 29:52At once. That's because that's what
- 29:54Cybermen. Cybermen.
- 29:56Say. At once, say would.
- 29:59Say when or soured. I still don't know.
- 30:01He's really done his homework and he's, he's.
- 30:04And he said he just, he was, he knew he was writing Cybermen's
- 30:07Greatest hits here. He wanted to do eggs.
- 30:08He wanted to take all the ingredients of classic
- 30:10Cybermen's stories of them all into one.
- 30:13And because really, the visitation was his, his personal
- 30:17story that he'd spent ages doing and then he was asked to do
- 30:20another one. So he's like, OK, I'll, I'll do
- 30:22a sub Man story exactly as they always were.
- 30:24Darling, I mean, you would think it would be the the no.
- 30:26There's a good. Word to say about him these
- 30:28days. He was sort no.
- 30:30Well, I I would. I would have thought that.
- 30:31I I mean, I know that that's true, but I would have thought
- 30:33this was the one he put all of his time and effort into and the
- 30:36visitation that he like, jotted out over a weekend.
- 30:39Because. Because he'd done the The
- 30:40Visitation he'd done as a as a radio play a few years before
- 30:44them with just about Richard Mace and and without Terra
- 30:48Lectors. So that basically was just a
- 30:50play about Richard Mace. But nevertheless, it was that he
- 30:52had that that setting up up and then just and then did a Doctor
- 30:55Who meets Richard Mace's story. Well, that's two massive
- 30:58subjects to talk about in Episode 2, Eric's award and the
- 31:01design of the Cybermen. Can't wait?
- 31:29The. Hamster with a blunt penknife
- 31:41for doing. Quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 31:46Quicker Welcome back to Hamster with a blunt penknife.
- 31:49I am still here after a delightful first episode of
- 31:52Earth Shock with my good friend Pete.
- 31:54Say hello, Pete. Yeah, hello.
- 31:56It's fantastic to still be here with you.
- 31:58And amazingly, unlike in 1982, we haven't got away a horrible
- 32:0323 1/2 hours to see Episode 2. Can you imagine?
- 32:07That happened? And then you've got away till
- 32:09Tuesday after school to find out that you're definitely right
- 32:13that it was a side man. Because I think I was screaming
- 32:14so loud during the opening during the closing credits.
- 32:17I didn't actually read it. And this afterwards.
- 32:21Was it? Did I imagine?
- 32:22It was it all in my imagination. Yeah.
- 32:25Yeah, and someone at school was going.
- 32:28No, it's just a. Robot thing you don't get side
- 32:30men anymore. I'm.
- 32:31Like, that's a side man. Like, Can you imagine Look you.
- 32:34Can imagine. That prepared me for Twitter,
- 32:35basically, because that's pretty much exactly what debate is.
- 32:37Like, you know, I have to steer clear of Twitter because I I'm
- 32:41always working when the episodes go out now.
- 32:43So I I just can't go anywhere near it.
- 32:44And frankly, after most episodes, it's so appalling
- 32:48anyway that I. But like.
- 32:51What on? Earth.
- 32:52Was it like, OK, just give me a brief insight into having just
- 32:5623 1/2 minutes of Doctor Who a week?
- 33:02Well, like you got it was twice a week in these days, so that
- 33:05was. That was.
- 33:05That was pretty thrilling, and I used to think exactly that was
- 33:09it. I have people in the old days
- 33:11when it was only on on Saturdays and you had to wait a whole week
- 33:14to see the next episode. And then that happened
- 33:17eventually. Yeah and like and like the
- 33:18Monday the Monday episode was over in a flash because because
- 33:21it was always it was the Part 2 episode was the one that
- 33:24actuating nearly a week till till Part 3.
- 33:27So it just gave it so much Case was the temple of it.
- 33:31Was Monday, Tuesday, Monday, Tuesday.
- 33:32Is that right? Yeah, this year it was, it
- 33:36swapped around in subsequent years a bit, but yeah, it was
- 33:38Mondays and Tuesdays. This year I think I said we're
- 33:39experimenting Angels which is like a pre casualty type
- 33:44hospital soap was doing the same thing and they were testing, out
- 33:47testing the waters for EastEnders.
- 33:48When that launched in a couple of years, they were already
- 33:50experimented with twice really. Dramas basically.
- 33:53So I can almost test a case willing to bet that that Tuesday
- 33:56at school you were unbearable. Then you only have to wait a
- 33:59day. I can't.
- 34:02Yeah, I mean, but I know. I mean, I had my little, my
- 34:04little geeky friends. There was like three or four of
- 34:06us who just just played Doctor Who at lunchtime and stuff.
- 34:10And yeah, I was at Rick. Yeah, the only thing I can see
- 34:13now when I look at you this is. Going to be his best story ever.
- 34:16Oh. No, all I can say when I look at
- 34:19you now is a 7 year old Pete like dressed as Adrian going.
- 34:24Why isn't he here? Why is he never around when we
- 34:26want him or something? I.
- 34:27Didn't have. The beard.
- 34:28Sorry. I didn't have no.
- 34:29I was doing a terrible line of Adrian from The Visitation, and
- 34:32no one wants to hear that. I'm.
- 34:35Queued up. I'm ready to go, if you are.
- 34:38Let's do it Part 2. Gosh, it's all happening in this
- 34:42one we. Have the countdown.
- 34:44Yeah, in 54321. Let's go.
- 34:55Thank you. The subtitles say Doctor Who
- 34:57theme. So I have.
- 35:04The radio. Sorry just to say the Radio
- 35:06Times. I've got the production
- 35:08subtitles on and it just says the Radio Times billing to this
- 35:10episode was what's behind the Hatch.
- 35:14Which? Is the most.
- 35:15Amazing. Underselling of a document said
- 35:17ever. But they couldn't do it.
- 35:18They could not say. Wasn't it?
- 35:22Like extreme secrecy behind this.
- 35:24Like they they closed down the gallery that fans could go and
- 35:26watch the recording. But really, there was no way to
- 35:29find out. You know, if you're a 7 year
- 35:31old, there is no way that a rumour could reach you.
- 35:34Yeah, not, not today. Everything's spoiled today,
- 35:37isn't it? But.
- 35:39Yeah, although I think so. I mean, so much of modernism is
- 35:41about Russell V Davis, Moffat and Chipnall trying to recreate
- 35:46that precise moment because it had the same.
- 35:48Even if if they're not old, fans of 82 do.
- 35:51You know who I think does it best?
- 35:53I think Chipnall does it best. I think he hid the Spyful Master
- 35:56and he hid the Joe Martin Dr. Like.
- 36:02Yeah, yeah, yeah. And and and through tricks and
- 36:05through making the Captain Jack reveal the big thing.
- 36:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:10Yeah, that that giving that loads of publicity was a really
- 36:15smart move to distract people. And that shock was also the
- 36:18first story I properly watched twice, because it was repeated
- 36:21the following year without this cliffhanger.
- 36:24It was shown in 245 minute episodes, I think.
- 36:26Were you like a VHS family at this time?
- 36:28Could you record or was it watching video for me?
- 36:32We got video quite early, actually.
- 36:35Was one of the first people I knew to get a video, but even
- 36:37then that was like season 21 or the repeat after it.
- 36:39The first thing I ever taped was The Awakening.
- 36:42And then a few weeks later, I only had one videotape.
- 36:44And a few weeks later, Star Wars had his TV premiere.
- 36:47And I had to. I had.
- 36:48This once I had my watch. Of The Awakening before I taped
- 36:52something else on the tape. 3 like and I watched The Awakening
- 36:54three times in one day because the next day I was going to have
- 36:57to take over it with Star Wars. How did that?
- 37:00Work though, did you have to just keep recording over each
- 37:02time but. I it was.
- 37:05But then, once I could afford to buy more videotapes, it was
- 37:08fine. Season 22 onwards.
- 37:11There was some slow MO there. I just have to say, every time
- 37:13Doctor Who does slow MO, I'm in love.
- 37:17Sparkles Exploding robot Slow MO is probably one of the very best
- 37:21forms slow MO. So I need to talk to you about
- 37:23this design of Cybermen, because I have recently watched Revenge
- 37:27of the Cybermen for one of these commentaries and I had a lot to
- 37:30say about the Padded Suits Camp Cyber Leader with his glitter
- 37:36helmet this. He does the thing of.
- 37:39Sorry. Go on, it's him who introduces.
- 37:41The idea of the cyber leader being being a villain rather
- 37:44than just them being completely robotic like they are in the in
- 37:47the Trouton years and there's no need address with the doorknob
- 37:52action. He's got the hang of that now,
- 37:53you see. Just as he's doing.
- 37:56But these these kind of militaristic streamlines
- 38:00sidemen, I think they look fantastic.
- 38:03Yeah so 80s and there was a there's a picture I will share
- 38:07it with you that was in a Doctor Who magazine at some point of
- 38:09the guy who did the plastic mouldings and he's holding the
- 38:12Cyberman head and. He's wearing.
- 38:14These. He's.
- 38:14Wearing these denim shorts that barely cover his, his, his it.
- 38:20Was not the helmet you were obsessed with in that picture?
- 38:23Formative. To an early teenage.
- 38:26I I realised the point where I was no longer looking at the
- 38:28Cyberman. I was looking at the shorts.
- 38:30And interestingly, you asked me in our first sort of back and
- 38:34forth conversation what's the most frivolous purchase I've
- 38:37ever bought. And just before Christmas I
- 38:40spent money I did not have on a 80s sideman figure, which is
- 38:46gorgeous in like in like I thought you were going.
- 38:50To say some really short denim shorts, but you're.
- 38:52Disappointed. Oh, so I have some of those too.
- 38:54But you know that that's for another time.
- 38:57The rifles are almost. Finished.
- 38:58So. Are we?
- 39:00You know, that's that's such a soured line and and I love it.
- 39:04Well, you were. Talking.
- 39:05You were talking about Eric's award and how people don't
- 39:07really have a good word to say, and I think that's true.
- 39:09I think his name's been kind of muddied a lot in in recent
- 39:14years. And he left under very a lot of
- 39:16bitterness, obviously, which kind of has coloured it,
- 39:19coloured it. His comments about his
- 39:21colleagues were really hard to to take and you shouldn't.
- 39:24It was really unprofessional. But but at the same time he was
- 39:27obviously having a a breakdown. I mean, if you've ever had a if
- 39:29you've ever been in charge of a project and your boss's boss's
- 39:32boss decides that your project is terrible but won't tell you
- 39:35why and and yet doesn't sack you, I can't even imagine that.
- 39:38And and that that was easily. They brought it back, didn't
- 39:42they? They brought it back and they
- 39:43didn't even give them any pointers to say right, we want
- 39:45you to change things. It's just like, no, just start
- 39:47making it again. You.
- 39:49Said it. Was terrible.
- 39:50It's too silly and it's too violent.
- 39:52That was basically what they were told about Doctor Andrew
- 39:55with the block of Paula's diary on to the distract the robots.
- 39:58But I would say in Eric Shaw's defence, I think he wrote some
- 40:03of the most dynamic, classic Doctor Who, certainly some of
- 40:07the most exciting. Like in terms of.
- 40:09In terms of. Action.
- 40:11And you know he he went over the like and then stuff like, I mean
- 40:14resurrection isn't it is obviously an attempt to do an
- 40:16Earth swap with the Daleks. And yes, it sort of tries to
- 40:19cram A6 parter into into into four episodes and it doesn't all
- 40:24add up. There's.
- 40:24A lot going on there, isn't there?
- 40:26A lot of lots. Yeah.
- 40:30I did a commentary on resurrection and.
- 40:32I love it, sorry, but the side must say we must.
- 40:34Act. Quickly, I always love it when
- 40:36they say they must act. It's like, yeah, that was the
- 40:38director was saying that to you. That wasn't the script.
- 40:41You think they? Learn from that line as well,
- 40:42but I seem to remember like King Peledon was saying that as well
- 40:45at one point we. Must I know?
- 40:46Yeah. Probably.
- 40:48Doing it deliberately, Yeah, all the I love how individual the
- 40:52four characters are. Like this is looking at the
- 40:54Android and saying how primitive it is, but not in a disdainful
- 40:58way, just because from her point of view it is.
- 41:00And then Tegan being the actual ordinary person among them all.
- 41:06And this is like a a really nice, it's basic threat, it's a
- 41:09bomb. But I think they they play it
- 41:12for real. They play this like like a
- 41:13procedural drama. You know, we play diffusing a
- 41:16bomb. Absolutely.
- 41:18And and we don't know what are some men behind that hatch?
- 41:21We don't know. At this point, it's so hard to
- 41:24remind yourself to to park the stuff that you already know
- 41:27about this story because you're breaking it.
- 41:29You're you're spoiling the story, literally spoilering it
- 41:32by watching it from the point of view of someone who already
- 41:34knows that these guys, these side men, are not down there, I
- 41:37mean. Jesus, what was the what?
- 41:41Was the and cameraman breaking the cameraman?
- 41:44The cyber leader breaking the 4th wall, turning to the camera
- 41:47to say explode the bomb when he's actually he's supposed to
- 41:50be giving the audience order to his bitch Lieutenant?
- 41:55I tend to call him the bitch Lieutenant.
- 41:57I always love the Lieutenant. He's.
- 41:58The cyber leader's bitch. That's his job.
- 42:00And it just gets worse every time they come back the the
- 42:03lieutenant's always whipped, isn't he?
- 42:05Yeah. They are a bit like Captain
- 42:09Mannering and Sergeant was his name from Dad's Army, aren't
- 42:14they? The trouble is.
- 42:15When you hit Tim's. Attack.
- 42:17For the cyber are. You quite sure that's why he's a
- 42:20cyber leader? In in a second assignment, they
- 42:25they suddenly start like behaving like robots, don't
- 42:28they? And doing these like jerky
- 42:29actions and talking like that, it's very odd.
- 42:33It is because, and that's because, yeah, because they
- 42:35gave, we've got Michael, Paul, Gareth back to be the cyber
- 42:37controller, 20 years, odd years old, teens of years after he'd
- 42:41originally. Done it.
- 42:41A few pies they didn't. Get they never gave them the
- 42:44memo that they'd slightly changed it since then.
- 42:47This is nice though, to see Davidson and Adrick working
- 42:51together, given what comes, you know, they they work together
- 42:54really well, yeah. Yeah.
- 42:56And and. And and they flip it and this is
- 43:01a good story where that gets flipped around.
- 43:03You know through in episode one it's Davison and and and the two
- 43:07two women and in the second episode he he pairs up with with
- 43:10Adric. And that's not failing.
- 43:12That's that's that's making use of having four central
- 43:16characters, and it's really unusual for any series to have
- 43:19as few as 4. Central characters, people.
- 43:21Talk about it in Doctor Who terms as being some aberration
- 43:24and oh, terrible decision, but there aren't many series that
- 43:26only have 4 central characters or or don't even have that many.
- 43:30I think the trouble is, isn't it?
- 43:31Most stories there's like a formula.
- 43:33There's one location and it's a running storyline so you you can
- 43:37afford to like dip in and out. Whereas in Doctor Who it's a
- 43:40single story where you have to try and give everyone a slice of
- 43:43the pie. Yeah, and it's.
- 43:45And The thing is, if if a writer isn't up to it, and if a
- 43:48writer's writing not all that well and he's got 4 characters,
- 43:53it'll be the fact that the four that will be really obvious with
- 43:55the four characters dynamic. What would you say is like the
- 43:57worst that? Means that script wasn't that
- 43:59writer, wasn't up to it anyway, and they probably would have
- 44:01written the shonky script with only two characters.
- 44:03What would you say is the worst, the worst example of like
- 44:06writing out one of the characters?
- 44:08I think maybe like Tegan and Turlo in Terminus, that's pretty
- 44:11bad where they're just shoved under the grating.
- 44:13That's. Just like a tube.
- 44:14Yes. Yes, that does, yeah.
- 44:16And they're not given anything to do and it's, but at the same
- 44:18time, they are the conversation. They have a good conversation.
- 44:21But they're not. Doing anything while they have
- 44:23it. They just sat there.
- 44:25Oh, hiding or I can't remember. But yeah.
- 44:29But I've got no problem with, you know, Mr. having a having a
- 44:31nap during kinder you. Know.
- 44:33Like, it's just that we gave taken a chance to Trek, Yeah, to
- 44:36take the limelight and actually, you know, have some beefy
- 44:40material for once. And of course, now we're used to
- 44:42having Doctor Light episodes. The companion light episode, you
- 44:46know, like you get two of the best.
- 44:48Probably, yeah, I'd say the two best episodes of the Ross and T
- 44:51Davis area, in my opinion, are Midnight and Turn Left and And
- 44:55that that's that. They're both episodes with one
- 44:58of the characters written out. Back-to-back.
- 45:00They're almost written out, yeah.
- 45:03Sorry, I'd really like such a little chair up there.
- 45:05Oh, he's so sweet. So now we're just using the bomb
- 45:08now, and the Doctor's very carefully opening the little
- 45:10hatches. Already got a shock of it.
- 45:12I get that. I get static electric shocks a
- 45:14lot, and I do that exactly like. You talk about static shocks.
- 45:19Once Upon a time I actually there was a back that fell off a
- 45:22plug and I pushed it into the wall and had the shock of my
- 45:25life when I flew across the room on camera.
- 45:28Oh my God, that was played back in slow motion.
- 45:32I probably could. You know, I've got the footage.
- 45:34Now. Hooray the Doctor hasn't got a
- 45:36fucking magic sport screwdriver to just wave at it.
- 45:39He's got to get his tool kit because Hooray the Terra Laptils
- 45:42blew it up. I.
- 45:43Say what happened to that It it turned to two.
- 45:48But no, he's got his tool kit and Adrian's got to go and get
- 45:50the right tool. And no, that's the wrong tool,
- 45:52and it all just adds to it. There's a great little tug of
- 45:55war between the Simon and them as well.
- 45:57Is it like the way? Yeah.
- 45:58And the Cybermen around their six sided console.
- 46:01Yeah. And we still don't quite know
- 46:07why do we don't know why this bomb is there, what they're
- 46:11trying to do. And it's not even.
- 46:12Been asked yet? Yeah, because because and before
- 46:17we know these troopers could be evil Nazis and the bomb could
- 46:20have been planted by freedom fighters.
- 46:21I love these, these emotionless Cybermen.
- 46:24We have been betrayed. Yes, they must be destroyed.
- 46:29At once. Not later.
- 46:31Let me be clear about this at. Once he has in the episode four,
- 46:35he has such fruity dialogue like Eric Sword was not interested in
- 46:38writing an emotionless Cybermen at all.
- 46:41No, no. But.
- 46:43Logic, it just doesn't mean not have I'm going to go there have
- 46:48been completely about logic, doesn't mean not having a
- 46:51personality and not having wants and needs sort of that.
- 46:56This is the case that David Banks makes in that book, the
- 46:59Ciderman book. I mean, I could make a case it's
- 47:02more interesting to watch as well.
- 47:05Completely because otherwise I mean in the invasion you've got
- 47:07Tobias Vaughan who is who totally came that one of the.
- 47:10Best. Villain performances in anything
- 47:13in Doctor Who. Can you even?
- 47:15Remember the Cybermen in Wheeling Space?
- 47:18Can you remember them? I can't.
- 47:19No, I can't. No, I mean, I can remember the
- 47:24ones from Revenge of the Cybermen because he was
- 47:26strutting around like a panto villain, you know?
- 47:29Yes, Doctor. Turned you down a bit for.
- 47:31This you will be. Pragmatised.
- 47:33Yeah, with an American accent as well, which is just unseemly.
- 47:37Have American aliens or Doctor Who they have.
- 47:40Them say. How dare you go Continental.
- 47:44I know Doctor Who. It was far too woke in the
- 47:47classic series, I'm telling you. Oh.
- 47:50Here we go, Simon have got their Internet fired up.
- 47:54They're going onto YouTube. It's not YouTube is it?
- 47:56It's Dailymotion. They're getting those videos are
- 47:58hacked. Yeah, there were What?
- 48:00Quality is terrible. But.
- 48:02Again, for a fan, this must have been really exciting to see the
- 48:05old Doctors. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:11And knowing them as well, I'll get an address as the 2nd
- 48:13Doctor, I'm thinking and I think I I wonder if now at this point
- 48:17I might not have been certain that there hadn't been a Third
- 48:19Doctor story with the cyber in it properly.
- 48:22Why they don't have, well, the 3rd Doctor doesn't feature
- 48:25possibly sat there going, Oh, they missed the 3rd Doctor.
- 48:27That's a mistake. And it's only like, complete,
- 48:30Forgive me, cunts that would sit here afterwards and watch this
- 48:33and go, Oh well, he was talking about two of the Cybermen, and
- 48:37that was a Wheeling space clip. Get over yourself, all right?
- 48:41Yeah, it all got uploaded into the time.
- 48:44Thingy. The time YouTube No Watch week
- 48:48or something like that. Oh, let's have a lovely moment
- 48:52now, Adrick and the Doctor. Adrick's hungry, you see.
- 48:57He had that lovely buffet in the 1920s with that lovely posh
- 49:01family who murdered their son and.
- 49:03They. Didn't mind because it was a.
- 49:04Nice party bloody face, wasn't he?
- 49:06He never stopped eating. No, no.
- 49:09Again, this is still worth to my own heart.
- 49:12Yeah, it's just not the match. Oh, I see that it's so nice that
- 49:17they're burying the hatchet here, and the doctrine advocate
- 49:19are agreeing that actually they do want to travel together.
- 49:23I. Just think their adventures are
- 49:24going to go. On sorted out their adventures.
- 49:25Are going to go on forever and ever.
- 49:28I can't wait to see those. The CVE, the gateway through E
- 49:35space. Which is?
- 49:36I can. That's a hilarious line.
- 49:39In many ways. Well, it.
- 49:40Is a reference to something a year ago.
- 49:43Doctor has this amazing ability, doesn't it?
- 49:45To have two characters stand in there speaking exposition to
- 49:49each other, things that they would already know, but they're
- 49:51saying it for the. Benefit of the audience?
- 49:54Yes, Shakespeare. Does this, I'm sure, yeah.
- 49:57I'm not sure if I can make a direct link between Eric Sword
- 49:59and Shakespeare, but go ahead, I'll.
- 50:04Get back from that one. So the silos behind the side
- 50:09men, are they the ones with like the side men in them?
- 50:13Yeah. We don't.
- 50:14We do not know that until later. But yeah, at the moment it just
- 50:17where are we? Just Are they on Tellus?
- 50:19My night is about to be made sorry.
- 50:22Go on, did. You.
- 50:24Yeah, no did. You oh, sorry, Mr. Ringworm.
- 50:25Mr. Now this. Is.
- 50:28This is where this is where he's so acidic.
- 50:31Cute. One of the one of the.
- 50:34Books. Is it the about time ones?
- 50:35There's amazing ones by Tat. Wood and Coach are the best
- 50:38doctor reference books, I think, because they're so funny and
- 50:41insightful and opinionated, but not enough.
- 50:43But they know the difference between an opinion and a fact.
- 50:45I think it's one of them that points out the relationship that
- 50:48he has with Beryl Reed is is just an amazing sort of gay some
- 50:54archetype situation of a of an older matriarch lesbian who is
- 50:59so annoyed by this pissy, uptight little queen who's
- 51:02working with her. And if you if you read it that.
- 51:04Way it just it just. Yeah, I love.
- 51:07It all the more because we haven't mentioned yet captain is
- 51:13on board who's. This going to be.
- 51:14Well, it's going to be a man with a moustache and grey hair.
- 51:18This is Doctor Who. So Captains of bases Under
- 51:22siege. We don't know this is a base
- 51:23under siege yet, but it is. I'm with.
- 51:24JNT OK and I'm with Steven Moffett on this one really, But
- 51:30I am with him on this one. If you can cast somebody that's
- 51:33going to get people watching, do it.
- 51:36And you know what? She's marvelous.
- 51:39Like, she totally is she's. Playing She knows she's playing
- 51:42the captain of a ship like a tanker.
- 51:44She's an oil tanker, Captain. And people the thing that.
- 51:47Infuriates me is when people say about this, oh, she didn't
- 51:49understand what was happening. She didn't know what an
- 51:51antimatic containment field is. Peter Davison, the.
- 51:54Actor doesn't know what an antimatic containment film is.
- 51:58Just say it with. Convictions.
- 52:00Did you ever see the behind the scenes footage of her having
- 52:03like a complete diva hissy thing on the Blu-ray?
- 52:06Yeah, it's wonderful. I've been waiting here all day
- 52:10on the. Bridge.
- 52:12I I always feel like like she's had like two or three cocktails
- 52:15before she's on any scene because she just later on she's
- 52:18like position. The men on the walkway Mr.
- 52:20Ringway. Yeah.
- 52:23And and she's. So.
- 52:24Experienced. But one thing she's not done
- 52:26before is this kind of rapid fire doing filming an action
- 52:31movie and well, none of them have done it before film and
- 52:33action movie in a in a few weeks in a small studio.
- 52:36BBCTV Centre. And she's.
- 52:39She's. She won.
- 52:40She won a Bafta. This year, the Year of this for.
- 52:43Her role in Smiley's People, also the other one, one of the
- 52:46smiley, I think it was Smiley's people as his his his former
- 52:49colleague who's become an alcoholic and is utterly
- 52:52whirling in despair. And she gives this tearful
- 52:54performance and it's amazing. This woman is famous as a
- 52:57comedian, but she knows how to act.
- 52:59She she's got the battle for the wrong role.
- 53:01She should have got it for this one.
- 53:03Yeah, absolutely. She should have got it for this.
- 53:06That's the only injustice. Pity I've just what I've just
- 53:10written a particularly nasty epital for it.
- 53:12She's just. She.
- 53:16Hates him and he hates her and you beginning to bore me.
- 53:20And you hear like. On on the.
- 53:22DVD. On the.
- 53:24Special feature on dates back in the day.
- 53:26Oh, I'm sorry, this sounded juicy.
- 53:28Go on. What was?
- 53:30You beginning to bore. Me.
- 53:32Oh, that's. All.
- 53:33Plenty. Loud because I'm much too nice.
- 53:35Oh, I would. Lovely is that a matte painting
- 53:42shop where they look down into the whole of the ship and it
- 53:44just recedes off into the distance.
- 53:46That's as good as the shot in in Indiana Jones of the of the case
- 53:50being put away in the in the hangar.
- 53:52It's just totally believable there's nothing fake about that.
- 53:58I like. I like this character as well,
- 54:02hopefully. Is it June?
- 54:03Bland. Berger.
- 54:04Yeah. Berger.
- 54:06She turns up again in Jim Bland passing forward, doesn't she?
- 54:08Yeah, that's that's the blind, blind woman.
- 54:12And this is what we're doing now, fast.
- 54:14It's interesting. This is another episode.
- 54:16One we've had, one really good episode, one really tense.
- 54:19What's happening? Where are we?
- 54:20Who are these people? Which one's the goodie?
- 54:22Which is the baddie? Suddenly we're having another
- 54:24one do. You know what that means?
- 54:26It's almost like. So we'd look to the.
- 54:28You know when they do. 6 parters.
- 54:29Sometimes they do A4 parter and then write a two-part ecological
- 54:33prologue like Seeds of Death. You've got two episodes of the
- 54:36in the North Pole and then four episodes back in England.
- 54:39It's. Kind of don't I did.
- 54:42The thing. I did at least.
- 54:43No, at least it's not being recorded.
- 54:44I did the thing, yeah, that and season and that has and this is
- 54:50a bit like that, but it's A1 parter followed by a three
- 54:52parter. Well, I would always say because
- 54:55you've got 21 passes. Sorry, two episode ones.
- 54:58You're almost like skipping episode three.
- 55:00That boring exposition episode. And you'll.
- 55:03Put your own straight into two episode fours there Are.
- 55:06Some good episode threes out there.
- 55:08There are in. Fact episode that is easiest to
- 55:10get wrong. I was watching Horror Fang Rock
- 55:13the other day and Horror Fang Rock has a fantastic episode 3.
- 55:17Sit your death as well. That's the kind of thing that
- 55:18lifts, because it's all more and more and more death and more
- 55:22scariness. I saw City of Death earlier and
- 55:24the episode 3 and that the the exposition was so cleverly
- 55:28delivered with like those scenes of the overlapping scare offs
- 55:33and things like that. It was really creatively done,
- 55:35and sometimes it can just be people standing in a room, you
- 55:39know, explaining the plot to this point.
- 55:43Capturing and getting escaped again.
- 55:45Did you see how many silos there were there?
- 55:47Capturing and getting escaped again.
- 55:48Escaping and getting captured again, That's correct.
- 55:51Having temporal problems due to this being my third glass of
- 55:53wine. I'm still on my first man.
- 55:57I need to catch up. You. 2.
- 56:02I actually think Davidson looks looks great in the house
- 56:04Creeping. Around the hold.
- 56:05Yeah, I'm sorry. I just got that, that silhouette
- 56:07of Davidson there. I think he looks great it.
- 56:11Really works. Yeah, it's like, now we look at
- 56:14it. And again, the fashionable thing
- 56:15to say now is, oh, they made them too cartoony, with each one
- 56:18having their own look. But all right, it was sort of
- 56:20cartoony. Anything I can kind of object to
- 56:23is from having the same like clothes every week.
- 56:26Like, you know, I can wear clothes over a couple of.
- 56:28Days those Andrea's pyjamas must be.
- 56:31Honky, stinky. Oh, there's the rarest of things
- 56:35in a minute. Like 2 almighty masculine
- 56:37screams. I've heard a few in my time.
- 56:44I hadn't thought of it like that.
- 56:52Be well back on the bridge. We should stop drinking.
- 57:01And it's always nice when characters and doctors who are
- 57:03being watched on TV by someone and here they've been burgers
- 57:05watching the Berger is watching them on TV just like we are.
- 57:08There's, there's those scripts. Now, there's one thing I will
- 57:12say about an Ericsson Ward script that is troubling and
- 57:14that is the dialogue. Well, sometimes it Well, Pete
- 57:20complaints. About.
- 57:22This on this ship, we execute murderers.
- 57:26Well, yeah. I want them caught.
- 57:31This is this is the bed. This this shot.
- 57:33Paxson is the bed line of the bedrock of the Ben Jackson
- 57:36class. Oh, do you?
- 57:38Know I. Sometimes deploy to people.
- 57:39That was Conrad's idea. And then realised by me he was
- 57:43he was Ron Graner. I was Delia, Derbyshire The.
- 57:46The worst thing about that Ben Jackson Claxson thing is I could
- 57:49name everyone from every story and I'm like, I've wasted my
- 57:53life. No, you have.
- 57:55Passed the test. What do they do to murderers?
- 57:59On this ship. I think they execute.
- 58:02Oh no, they execute them. Do you know what?
- 58:05I love the fight as well. There was a whopping close up of
- 58:07their bodies there. Like this.
- 58:08This is pulling its punctures. You know it's not holding back.
- 58:13Just going for it. Oh my, this is such a marvellous
- 58:16story. It.
- 58:19Is. And.
- 58:19And you know. The Doctor is a patchwork.
- 58:22That's the whole point. That's why it's lasted this
- 58:24long. It has different chops and
- 58:25changes completely different style in a couple of years and
- 58:28in a couple of years either direction.
- 58:29But this is the best one. In.
- 58:32My. Opinion Is this Is this your
- 58:33favorite Doctor Who story of? All.
- 58:35Time Adams, the witty, jolly adventure style Doctor Who seems
- 58:40to be the more popular one, but it just it comes and goes.
- 58:43It's like flared trousers. Can you think of anything more
- 58:45patchwork than the 80s though, like they were peaks and troughs
- 58:49in the 80s? Of the Doctor Who specifically,
- 58:53yeah. Or just generally.
- 58:54No, no. Just just the stories.
- 58:55Yeah, just the stories and you And you can go from a Peak to a
- 58:58through within a story like Andrezarni to Twin Dilemma. 2
- 59:02rolls of the same. The same.
- 59:03And that that's because of the freedom and and the yeah and the
- 59:08pressures. You can roll the same dice twice
- 59:10and you get a case of Andrezarni, one where you can
- 59:11twin dile into the next. Although I'm sure there is
- 59:14somebody out there who will make the case for the twin dilemma
- 59:17and not for the case of Andrezarni.
- 59:20Yeah, yeah. And you can.
- 59:21That's fine. A hamster with a blunt penknife
- 59:59for doing quicker. Quicker, quicker welcome.
- 1:00:04Back to a hamster with a blunt penknife.
- 1:00:07The Doctor Who Commentary Podcast.
- 1:00:09I am still here with the wonderful Pete Lambert.
- 1:00:12Say hello, Pete. Hello, Pete.
- 1:00:15Does everyone say that? I think everyone's.
- 1:00:16That by this point in the evening, one point just one
- 1:00:19point in in all. OK, OK, yeah.
- 1:00:21Well, you tell me, what are we watching today?
- 1:00:25It's been 6 days since Earth Shock episode two was on last
- 1:00:29Tuesday, and now it's Monday and it's time for.
- 1:00:31Earth shock episode. 3. I want to find out they are.
- 1:00:34They are. They are Sider.
- 1:00:36Men, I think we've we've we've settled that the arguments are
- 1:00:38now over. They are definitely Sider men.
- 1:00:41But I'm going to. I want to find out whether they
- 1:00:43genuinely do execute murderers on this ship.
- 1:00:46So let's go. I will count this inland in
- 1:00:49five. 4. 321 let's go. We're rolling.
- 1:00:58As you said before Episode 3's have a bad Rep and a story
- 1:01:02that's not well written is an episode three that it's most
- 1:01:05obvious because right it can be treading water.
- 1:01:07Now in my mind's eye that's not the case at all with Earth
- 1:01:11shock. But we'll find out I'm going to
- 1:01:13cut I I Revere this story so I'm going to I'm going to try and
- 1:01:16come at it with an open mind on the Captain.
- 1:01:19Sorry. The ratings are up by a million
- 1:01:20on the previous week. The the production most what?
- 1:01:22Are they What are? They 9.8 million for episode 3.
- 1:01:27It's 18, yeah. Remember, in season 18, the
- 1:01:31ratings plummeted as low as 3 million at one point.
- 1:01:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:37And to be fair, I was watching Buck Rogers back then as.
- 1:01:40Well. Because it was so good.
- 1:01:46Oh, they've given her, like, this battered leather jacket,
- 1:01:48haven't they? Beryl Wade.
- 1:01:49She just makes. The part.
- 1:01:51With the massive collar and it's just and this is only 81, so the
- 1:01:5580s don't. This is going to sound stupid,
- 1:01:57but the 80s don't really know what the 80s are going to be
- 1:02:00like yet. Now we can watch it and go, oh,
- 1:02:02that's so 80s, but actually at the time and.
- 1:02:05And. Like right now in 2021, we don't
- 1:02:07really know what the twenty 20s are going to look like in
- 1:02:10history. They.
- 1:02:11Don't think this is particularly 80s though, not in the same way
- 1:02:15something like Time Lash or War is the deep, you know, bright
- 1:02:18and garish and colourful. Years later.
- 1:02:20And then, yeah, there's not so much, you know, the set is neon
- 1:02:24that that they're, they're leather uniforms.
- 1:02:28Yeah, they've got shoulder pads, but they're grey with shoulder
- 1:02:30pads. But she does not like that is a
- 1:02:33proper vampire color. She's so grumpy, isn't she?
- 1:02:37I love her. And of course, so you won't know
- 1:02:41this but she had a kids show at this time which was everyone
- 1:02:45knows Rainbow with John Uncle and Zippy and everything.
- 1:02:48And when Rainbow wasn't on one of its and replacements was a
- 1:02:51show called Get Up and Go which starred Beryl.
- 1:02:53Reed has Beryl as herself, but she lived with a green puppet
- 1:02:57cat called Moon Cat who flew from the moon at the start of
- 1:03:00every episode. I kind of know what I did.
- 1:03:02It was they say I'm the shop. It was a bit vague, slightly
- 1:03:05camp and some men came round occasionally.
- 1:03:07That often happens at Beryl Reed and and so she was as well as
- 1:03:11her always, but she's always on quiz shows like Blankety Bank
- 1:03:14and Celebrity Squares. But that was because she was so
- 1:03:17famous as a comedian, the comedy actress more and.
- 1:03:20But you're saying at the same time she was still getting like
- 1:03:23roles that, you know she could potentially win a BAFTA for.
- 1:03:25So it wasn't like she was, she was only getting like kids shows
- 1:03:30and things like that. Is there a reason, then, why we
- 1:03:32all remember Rainbow but we don't remember Beryl Reed's kids
- 1:03:36show? Basically, it wasn't that good.
- 1:03:41The cat was funny. The cat was a bit like his.
- 1:03:43Personality was sort of like a. It was.
- 1:03:44It was. Uppity and posh, but also
- 1:03:47slightly stoned. Oh, basically.
- 1:03:49And it was disdainful, and she was.
- 1:03:51She brought it down to earth by by explaining to how things
- 1:03:54worked around around the house, that sort of thing.
- 1:03:57I really like the fact that they set a lot of the action on this
- 1:04:01stairwell because it allows him to do split level action and
- 1:04:05direct it a bit more interestingly than, I don't
- 1:04:08know, say, do you remember Warriors of the Deep where
- 1:04:10everyone just stood in a line and got shot down?
- 1:04:13Yeah. Yeah, this I It's such a shame
- 1:04:16that Moffett died so young, relatively young and and didn't
- 1:04:21go on to great because he was. He was absolutely up there as as
- 1:04:25the best, one of the best directors that the show ever had
- 1:04:29and he could have come back. It would be a bit old by by the
- 1:04:33time that the series came back, but.
- 1:04:35You said the Moffett then. Did you mean Grim Wade?
- 1:04:38I do mean grim Wade. I thank.
- 1:04:41You. How many of you had?
- 1:04:42I get my, I do that all the time, but normally it doesn't
- 1:04:48matter. It's very rare that I no, no,
- 1:04:49it's. Just shit or no?
- 1:04:50It's. Not I'm doing this.
- 1:04:52When you've got a particularly pissy geek here in front.
- 1:04:54Of you, the two doctors is not directed quite as well as this
- 1:04:58by by other Moffett. But it does have charms of its
- 1:05:01own, I think. It does.
- 1:05:03And yeah, and. People, It gets a harder rap
- 1:05:06than it than it deserves. Do you think about this?
- 1:05:08This the irresponsibility of? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:12Didn't someone make a complaint? I didn't put a passive bag over
- 1:05:16my head because I'm not stupid. And if it's?
- 1:05:19A number of stupid, stupid. Children in the world then, you
- 1:05:21know it's doing the species a favour.
- 1:05:26I love all that piping in their in their leather.
- 1:05:29I just think it's such a clever design.
- 1:05:31Yeah, and again, that's how you do.
- 1:05:33Beryl Reid knows how to deliver exposition.
- 1:05:35A bomb on Earth, my. Ship It's like.
- 1:05:40That's how you do it. It doesn't fall as a.
- 1:05:42Conspirator. They're on my ship.
- 1:05:45It's hard for me now to remember, but there was a period
- 1:05:48in the 90s when I first started talking to other, discovering
- 1:05:51there were other Doctor Who fans, particularly who got
- 1:05:53older. One of my friends, Brothers was
- 1:05:55like 10 years older and had been a fan in the 70s and he was
- 1:05:58about generation of who fans who absolutely just smeared at earth
- 1:06:02shotguns like a stupid time. They've got that stupid
- 1:06:04comedian. And.
- 1:06:06In the Doctor Who story and it was just so silly and.
- 1:06:10You've got to remember, though, and that.
- 1:06:12Was what a lot of people? Thought for a long time.
- 1:06:14You've got to remember we've all had that period of our lives
- 1:06:17where we were kind of that person.
- 1:06:18Maybe you didn't. I think I had.
- 1:06:20Oh my God, I did. I had 10 years.
- 1:06:22Well, you know, I would like write off entire eras.
- 1:06:26And you know, I couldn't watch any embarrassing effect.
- 1:06:29I've been that person. I grew up.
- 1:06:31Thank goodness. It's all part of of becoming the
- 1:06:38adult fan. It's marvelous when you see the
- 1:06:39outcome. It's in episode 3 and the Doctor
- 1:06:42does not know what this story is actually about yet.
- 1:06:45He gets the best ever. You know, when the Doctor goes
- 1:06:50Cybermen, he gets the best. He gets a whopping great close
- 1:06:53up. And this I just remember there's
- 1:06:56a real parallel here with horror Fang rock which I did a thing on
- 1:07:00on track one podcast that's just would have come out a couple of
- 1:07:02weeks ago by the time you listening to this and I was
- 1:07:05saying on Bat that that has one of the best episode threes as
- 1:07:07well and it and it's the same it's in episode.
- 1:07:09It's only in episode 3 the Doctor realizes exactly what the
- 1:07:13routine is and what it's actually up to and what it can
- 1:07:15do. And just as here in Earth Shock,
- 1:07:18this is, this is the episode where the Doctor realizes we're
- 1:07:20ahead of it. We know what he's What is it in
- 1:07:22for? So I'd say in episode 3 of
- 1:07:25Horror Fan Rock is when, like, lots of people start dying.
- 1:07:27But people have been dying throughout this story like this
- 1:07:30is this is a massacre. I won't refuse losing my bonus
- 1:07:35for a few miserable Stow. I see she's pissed.
- 1:07:38I'm telling you, she's drunk. And she's the she's the the
- 1:07:46manager, the team manager and and Berger is the one who
- 1:07:49actually knows what the antimatic containment field is
- 1:07:51and actually knows how to do it all and.
- 1:07:53As. As a youngster I might have
- 1:07:55thought, well that's completely unrealistic, but obviously the
- 1:07:57manager knows everything. There's a more wise person now
- 1:08:00who's actually seeing the world, although I know that is exactly
- 1:08:02how it. Is Pete.
- 1:08:03I'm a manager and I will tell you, yeah, but you're right
- 1:08:06entirely. I think I could say that from
- 1:08:08both both perspectives. I love the fact there's work.
- 1:08:11She is playing it with utter conviction.
- 1:08:13Like there are guest actors in the ACS, Richard Bryant, say
- 1:08:18Tony Selby. They're kind of playing, playing
- 1:08:22out the roles where she is just playing it straight.
- 1:08:25Yeah, and and there's playing out because it's fun.
- 1:08:28I mean, no one would criticise Helena in the in the Happiness
- 1:08:32Patrol for going over the top. My name's Maya's gone blank.
- 1:08:37She, of course. She's not.
- 1:08:39Ellen. Ellen played by Really famous.
- 1:08:42Sheila Hancock, me. Sheila.
- 1:08:43Hancock, thank you. Yeah, obviously she goes,
- 1:08:46because it's the happiness with all everything.
- 1:08:48That's the tone of the whole thing.
- 1:08:50But that wouldn't work in this, and Beryl Reid knows that.
- 1:08:54Because she. Because she is a she.
- 1:08:55Can She? Could have.
- 1:08:56She could have made this funnier if she wanted to, but she
- 1:09:01hasn't. Like that line she has about the
- 1:09:02Terrified. Peter Grimm, Wade, do you?
- 1:09:04Remember the line about the epital?
- 1:09:05Like she could play that up. Yeah.
- 1:09:07But she. But she doesn't.
- 1:09:09Yeah, you could easily hang that up.
- 1:09:11There's a wonderful moment. Though it's funny anyway.
- 1:09:13You don't need to hang it up, but it is funny obviously.
- 1:09:15There's a wonderful bit where she's being manhandled by the
- 1:09:18cyber men and you can see Beryl read this.
- 1:09:20This is not what I signed up for.
- 1:09:29Oh, that was the famous line, wasn't it?
- 1:09:30Can we hold Warp's breathe? Is that is that?
- 1:09:32Next to. And is what the latest?
- 1:09:34She says. We're coming out of warp, Dr.
- 1:09:36And that was the one. Or is that just off, just off
- 1:09:39the High Street warp? Drive.
- 1:09:40You can see in the outtakes as well, she's just baffled by all
- 1:09:43of this. So the fact that.
- 1:09:45She Davidson. Look at Davidson doing.
- 1:09:47The Trout in the hands. He's doing the thing with his
- 1:09:48fingers, drumming his fingers against each other.
- 1:09:51That's the word for it. That's straight out of Patrick
- 1:09:53and Trout. I love Tegan just running around
- 1:09:56with a gun. Yeah, she's she's Ripley.
- 1:09:59That's the thing, people. Used to say.
- 1:10:01Only Caspar or Reader's Ripley's like, no, they tegan's Ripley.
- 1:10:04Obviously she hasn't got time to do all that much about it.
- 1:10:07But, and it's great again, it's not taken for granted in 1981
- 1:10:12that you've got women in both of the military groups.
- 1:10:14You've got a woman with the the troopers.
- 1:10:16Who's. Coming along, coming along there
- 1:10:18with Tegan and you've got a grey haired woman among the security
- 1:10:20guards packing, packing a weapon too on on the freighter.
- 1:10:27I wonder if that was in the script or if it was a Grimoire
- 1:10:29choice. I mean, resurrection has its
- 1:10:34fair share of like female representation as well.
- 1:10:38So in fact, so does Revelation. Revelation does too.
- 1:10:42So maybe Eric's award is is just a prominent for writing strong
- 1:10:46women. And now it's a battle on the
- 1:10:49staircase, hiding behind some boxes.
- 1:10:51I mean, that is, if you're playing Doctor Who at home with
- 1:10:54your siblings. That is exactly the kind of
- 1:10:56situation you get into. Some boxes on, some stairs to
- 1:10:58hide behind. I love this.
- 1:11:01I love this. The March of the cyber music.
- 1:11:05Yeah, when this came out on the album The Doctor Who, the music
- 1:11:10came out a few months after this, I think.
- 1:11:12Did you know the way, the way he positioned that camera, you just
- 1:11:16saw some hella cyber crotches and in a minute you're going to
- 1:11:20see some hella cyber arse as well?
- 1:11:23Grim Wade knew where to put his camera.
- 1:11:25There we go, yes. There you.
- 1:11:33Go. Here we go.
- 1:11:34This zoom in and they. Emerge out the darkness again.
- 1:11:38It's just are these your friends?
- 1:11:42It's like how your mother would tell you when some drunk people
- 1:11:44turn up, put your parts are. These friends of yours?
- 1:11:53Oh, he plays that so well. The only thing about the design
- 1:11:56I don't think quite works is the moon boots.
- 1:11:59Suddenly. You're going to say.
- 1:12:01That I mean. Yes.
- 1:12:04We don't see much of them to be fair he he often shoots load
- 1:12:07like up to make them more. Medicine.
- 1:12:11And it's it's a really good idea that the side men and the
- 1:12:13troopers have both got different sound effects for their guns,
- 1:12:17You can see. You can hear.
- 1:12:18Who's shooting him as well as seeing it which?
- 1:12:24Jesus bodies. Everywhere just.
- 1:12:26Bodies everywhere, yeah, and I'll bless them.
- 1:12:29The side of men are really strong sidemen.
- 1:12:30Actors are really struggling to find somewhere to put their feet
- 1:12:32on the staircases. Wouldn't you in?
- 1:12:35Those boots. Piles of corpses.
- 1:12:40No, this is nice. Him going set your weapons for
- 1:12:42kill because that was like Captain Kirk's famous.
- 1:12:44One of Captain Kirk's catchphrases was set your
- 1:12:48weapons for stun. That was being lit.
- 1:12:50Did you notice that was being lit from below?
- 1:12:52Like that's so rare in this time.
- 1:12:55Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like his ring ring way
- 1:12:57creeping up on someone. You just get a shot of his feet
- 1:12:59walking into camera 1st and then the camera up, hands up.
- 1:13:02And then look at this going up the stair.
- 1:13:04Oh, it's the direction is so good.
- 1:13:06OK and the the production note subtitles, they just told me
- 1:13:09that the the the dead woman at the time men are stepping over
- 1:13:11is Val Mccrimmon. Who was a?
- 1:13:13Production assistant usually, but in this she got cast as a as
- 1:13:16an extra. As well.
- 1:13:17She's seen at some point in this.
- 1:13:19I know, I know there's a scene where she's in the shadows and
- 1:13:23you can see her turning a script, and it's actually in the
- 1:13:26story. I don't know where it is though.
- 1:13:28I've never been able to see her pointing.
- 1:13:31Your gun in the room, did you? Gun in the room.
- 1:13:36Even the reveal of this with him, he stood there for a minute
- 1:13:40and none of them see him. We we see him first.
- 1:13:43I'm having too much fun with this one and.
- 1:13:50Then there's this little corridor.
- 1:13:51It is a corridor just outside the oh, I'm wrong, I'm a
- 1:13:55criminal. Isn't that?
- 1:13:56She's still there with her, with her little.
- 1:13:57I'm going to. Try and preserve her.
- 1:13:59I'm going to see if I can see her with her.
- 1:14:00She's not got. She's nearly gone now.
- 1:14:04Your crew is redundant. You.
- 1:14:09Traitor. Oh, wonderful.
- 1:14:19A nice doctor drop. So this is the doctor announcing
- 1:14:21that the site men are allergic to gold.
- 1:14:22Gold because he's posh the people.
- 1:14:25Does anyone say gold? Still, but and because there was
- 1:14:30a fairly growing list at this point of things that the side
- 1:14:33men can be killed by like guns, gold, Gold that had a problem
- 1:14:38with gravity, radiation. Although they kind of settled on
- 1:14:42gold, didn't they? They settled on gold in the 80s.
- 1:14:44That was kind of like a de facto side man weakness.
- 1:14:48Yeah. A little bit of exposition about
- 1:14:51tomb and the side men and. Here we go.
- 1:14:53So yeah, the. Doctor's in for.
- 1:14:54Dumping the side, men. History to us, but pointedly
- 1:14:57he's doing it so that Andrew will overhear him.
- 1:14:58So it that that's a logical rational info dump and.
- 1:15:03Finally, he. Doesn't know.
- 1:15:04That bloody badge has got a use. Oh, look at her.
- 1:15:11Chop him. Yeah, karate job that I've got a
- 1:15:14gift. There's a gift of that the guys
- 1:15:16who do the old Doctor Who show podcast.
- 1:15:19Some American guys who were leaping around in old Doctor Who
- 1:15:22and having a great time with it. Sorry, that is an amazing gift.
- 1:15:26Here's the bit with the doors where you see the side of the
- 1:15:28silhouette of the side of man. The doctor leaps his hand on the
- 1:15:31door and it's on the door switch and and the door closes and it's
- 1:15:35just so fast cut. It's it deserves all the awards.
- 1:15:40It's it's 2 seconds and it's like 4 shots in two seconds.
- 1:15:44Silhouette Cyberman hand on switch door slams.
- 1:15:47Do you know something this story does really, really well?
- 1:15:49The Doctor Who doesn't do very often and that is like jump
- 1:15:52shocks. So there were a couple there
- 1:15:54when they realised they were coming in the door and he's
- 1:15:55like, you know, shut the door in a minute.
- 1:15:58There's a bit where there's a woman coming out of the TARDIS
- 1:16:00and one of the sidemen just grabs her and she screams her
- 1:16:03head off like this is, this is like.
- 1:16:08We just missed because we were enthusing.
- 1:16:09About something else, the bit where the Doctor asks how many
- 1:16:12crates there are in the hold and she goes, oh, there's about
- 1:16:1510,000 of them. And then there's just that close
- 1:16:18up on her and she goes that's. That's not possible.
- 1:16:21And if she was having that, If she was.
- 1:16:22Doing a Graham. Crowd and.
- 1:16:24And going, that's not possible. Like in it was a nine month.
- 1:16:29It would be funnier we'd be having.
- 1:16:31We would have laughed. She could have said three.
- 1:16:34I've seen 3. Yeah.
- 1:16:38Yeah, she does. She does play it well.
- 1:16:40Oh, now there is OK. I've got a slight criticism here
- 1:16:43that is a bit where they're reacting.
- 1:16:45Reacting to the door is incredible.
- 1:16:49Yeah. But the Simon?
- 1:16:50'S got that thing that looks like an amazing 80s electric
- 1:16:52guitar. They're about to start blasting,
- 1:16:55but I'm not the epitaph. I'll forgive it, you know, for
- 1:16:58that that shot of the Simon stuck in the door.
- 1:17:01Yes, we're coming up to that is one of the best about and and
- 1:17:05see having that flash on your screen.
- 1:17:07When you're 7 1/2. And then that's it.
- 1:17:09It's gone. You're probably never going to
- 1:17:10see it again. It stays in your mind and you're
- 1:17:12describing it to your friends afterwards.
- 1:17:15And then when it was repeated the next summer, I guess it was
- 1:17:18the summer of the following year.
- 1:17:20You were just. Waiting for that bit to come and
- 1:17:22thinking maybe it wasn't as good as I remembered.
- 1:17:24And it. Just is our.
- 1:17:26Other side of the guards having a chit chat.
- 1:17:29Why? Are you doing these like gossipy
- 1:17:31hand gestures? And to be fair, the only one
- 1:17:38who's not convincing is Matthew Waterhouse going.
- 1:17:40You know, Doctor? Oh no.
- 1:17:42Barrel Reed has a goat. Barrel Reed has a goat as well.
- 1:17:45OK, well, listen, OK we're going to rate their reactions now to
- 1:17:48to OK being to be you know they can't see what that what it
- 1:17:53actually looks like. So I'm going to and.
- 1:17:59The, so the. Doctor is slotting into them
- 1:18:00with with the two of them. He's getting burger to show him
- 1:18:03the burger to show him the equipment.
- 1:18:06The Captain doesn't actually know how it works.
- 1:18:07Neither does Bell or Eat. That doesn't matter.
- 1:18:10And this is. Just to remind us that she
- 1:18:13actually exists. Yeah, it's disappointing for
- 1:18:16Sarah Sutton, but again, all right in this one, she's being a
- 1:18:18hurrah on on on the Enterprise. But don't worry Pete, She gets
- 1:18:22loads to do in time. Time flight.
- 1:18:25She gets to be possessing time, flight.
- 1:18:27Run around, she does loads. Yeah, it's just this isn't her
- 1:18:31week. That's all.
- 1:18:31Right. Wait.
- 1:18:32Till after Infinity, she's running around with a bloody
- 1:18:34gun. Knocking everyone out.
- 1:18:38Oh. There's lots of technobabble
- 1:18:42here. This is the Can you deliver
- 1:18:44technobabble convincingly because none of it makes sense.
- 1:18:46Yeah, yeah. And and Davidson does it by
- 1:18:50acting that he finds it frustrating that he's got to do
- 1:18:53it, but at the same time, he knows it's his.
- 1:18:55You've got to tell it to Addrick.
- 1:18:57So he does. Now he also does like the David
- 1:18:59Tennant thing of just talking really fast.
- 1:19:02Yes, yeah. So by the time he's at the.
- 1:19:04End I'm only noticing. Right now in big.
- 1:19:07Red letters above Davidson's head is a sign at the back of
- 1:19:09the room that says ESCAPE POD. I wonder if that is going to
- 1:19:12come. Into force, into force.
- 1:19:14Into action. Come on, lad.
- 1:19:18Sorry, I can't stop. Quit.
- 1:19:19Barry Oh, here we go. Barry's reaction.
- 1:19:22Oh, it's amazing. She's a pro because she's
- 1:19:27pretending it's really hot, so her whole body is back, right?
- 1:19:31Yeah, yeah. And they only get one take.
- 1:19:33You watch Tegan well, Warrior. Is coming up on the.
- 1:19:37Production of subtitles that they did have to do lots of
- 1:19:39retakes, but it was because of stuff like Boom Mike's Getting
- 1:19:42into shot and things like that. Look at this, the accent.
- 1:19:45Oh. Tegan.
- 1:19:45Get out of a gun. What?
- 1:19:47Do you warrior? Woman.
- 1:19:48Cyber bastard. This is just like Leela's
- 1:19:50killing the Rooten. Yeah.
- 1:19:54Did you know I've been hard on Tegan's right there?
- 1:19:56Well, no. Do you still peanuts on her
- 1:20:00flight or lit up a cigarette in her in her toilet on her flight?
- 1:20:04You'll get that treatment. Oh, did you see the the the big
- 1:20:07moon booths were really easy there for them to pull him away
- 1:20:09then that's that's what that's what they're there for.
- 1:20:14Now, by all accounts, David Banks is quite a camp man, but
- 1:20:18he he carries himself so Butch in his yeah, Oh yeah, there we
- 1:20:24go, Simon and the. Doctor Unfortunately, the Doctor
- 1:20:29can't count to 2 and has forgotten that that is the
- 1:20:31number of doors that there are. Can I can I tell you quickly, my
- 1:20:35dream companion cast So I would have had Amelia Ducat stay on
- 1:20:41from season 2, I would have had Amelia Rumford stay on from
- 1:20:46Stones of Blood and then I would have had Barrel Reef.
- 1:20:49Imagine the three of them and Peter Davidson.
- 1:20:52They did a British remake of Golden Girls and it was dismal,
- 1:20:56it was dreadful and they didn't even show all the episodes.
- 1:20:58They only filmed about six with Wendy Craig, Jean Bot from Bread
- 1:21:03and a couple of other people, and you've just given a much
- 1:21:06better cast of it than that. If they may remade The Golden
- 1:21:08Girls in Britain with With Those and Peter, Peter.
- 1:21:11Davidson. As as Rose.
- 1:21:14Well, because he was. He was in everything in the 80s,
- 1:21:16wasn't he? So he.
- 1:21:17Was in. Every programme he was on, every
- 1:21:19single night, It's hard to understand.
- 1:21:22Do you know I'd love it when they make a door out of balsa
- 1:21:25wood like? Yeah.
- 1:21:27OK. That it does flap a little bit.
- 1:21:29But that's just because the. Cybermen are so damn Butch that
- 1:21:32when they hit iron, it crumbles and turns to balsa wood.
- 1:21:36They're already doing some great staring up, frightened at the
- 1:21:39Cybermen acting. Matthew Ball has not do it too
- 1:21:41badly either, you know. Yeah.
- 1:21:43No, it's. Difficult giving a bit like side
- 1:21:45eye there. Look, frightened.
- 1:21:52Anything that they're going to kill the doctor.
- 1:21:55But. They've got something else in
- 1:21:57plan. They kill the Ringway because
- 1:22:00it's only a four part story and we haven't got time for him to
- 1:22:03have a longer path. You know, I don't know.
- 1:22:05This is the wine talking. I'm going to be really shallow
- 1:22:08now. I think I'm quite hot for the
- 1:22:1080s side men, you know I. Thought you were going to say
- 1:22:13Ringway? It's the voice.
- 1:22:17Yeah, the leather. Jeez, so this poor woman who's
- 1:22:22been trapped in the TARDIS is about to be Mr. Kyle.
- 1:22:25Executing. Fucking PhD.
- 1:22:27She just wants to get it written up and submitted for approval.
- 1:22:30I now know PhD students. I now think, yeah, that's pretty
- 1:22:33much what she's like. She's probably working
- 1:22:34three-part time jobs and all this shit's going on.
- 1:22:37All of my friends have been nurturing.
- 1:22:39She's had a. She's on a bloody spaceship.
- 1:22:41Like Wonderful Life. And she's going to die on the
- 1:22:44periphery of a Doctor Who story. But what a way to go if you're
- 1:22:49going to go down and go down in Flames pirouette.
- 1:22:54Now you will see strange oh. My God.
- 1:23:00Amazing. And and what's his name?
- 1:23:07He did the music, you said. Earlier Malcolm.
- 1:23:09Didn't see that Michael Malcolm Clark.
- 1:23:10Yeah, he does that thing where the the.
- 1:23:13Music. Is so close to being a sound
- 1:23:16effect, you're not entirely sure quite where the line is there,
- 1:23:19but there is a line, just like in the Sea Devils look at.
- 1:23:22The direction. Here the sidemen covered in
- 1:23:24foil, covered in plastic. And just really.
- 1:23:29And it's such a shame in attack of the cyber men when they come
- 1:23:32out of the tombs they. Didn't.
- 1:23:34They didn't have this direction. They tried to do it in the
- 1:23:38sewers, didn't they? With like the wall coming out,
- 1:23:40but it was nowhere did it. It had this moment, yeah, it had
- 1:23:42this moment. But the but the bit with the
- 1:23:44Tombs, they just didn't. Get to.
- 1:23:46Do it like this. The thing with this though, it
- 1:23:48had three episodes of build up and this is like the payoff.
- 1:23:53Yeah, and there are thousands of them.
- 1:23:56His army 08 weeks. Doctor.
- 1:24:02I'll even forgive the fact that they've like tripled.
- 1:24:04That's the. Split stream and they do.
- 1:24:06It does cut away just before they start going into each
- 1:24:09other, but. Yeah, that And now that's not.
- 1:24:13That's what. I'm trying to do in episode
- 1:24:15three. Yeah, that is I like, like that
- 1:24:17is memorable material. That is, like, is that like, the
- 1:24:22most memorable set piece involving the side men?
- 1:24:26Yeah, I mean that and that and my waking up in 2.
- 1:24:30Originally. Which, of course, is a story
- 1:24:32that we'll never, ever get to see.
- 1:24:34We'll only ever see a handful of photos of it, and there's no
- 1:24:36imaginable way that we the. Soundtrack is amazing though.
- 1:24:39Have you not heard the soundtrack of the Colin Baker
- 1:24:41narration? The Cyber Controller was
- 1:24:46hideous. Fabulous, though.
- 1:24:52I mean, I can't imagine how this story could get more exciting.
- 1:24:56No, this is the thing so as to receive Episode 3.
- 1:24:59Is that good? That means episode 4 is probably
- 1:25:00a bit of a comes out of interesting.
- 1:25:02I bet I've watched all two a lot.
- 1:25:04There's going to be a reset switch, and also now that none
- 1:25:06of this really happened. They'll all survive, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:11We know how it goes. We.
- 1:25:13Know how it goes. God bless you, Peter Grimley.
- 1:25:39The hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 1:25:50We're doing quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 1:25:55Welcome back to Hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 1:25:59I am still here. It's day four for you guys.
- 1:26:02It's the same evening for us. I'm still here with the
- 1:26:04wonderful Pete Lambert. Say hello, Pete.
- 1:26:08Hello Pete. It is nice to be here still with
- 1:26:11you, Joe, after and and yeah, as people who are, if you're just
- 1:26:14listening to this as the first episode, you might want to
- 1:26:17rewind and go back two or three episodes ago to find some sober
- 1:26:21people reviewing a shock episode one, because what's about to
- 1:26:24happen now is different from that in many.
- 1:26:27Ways I was. Just saying off off camera, that
- 1:26:34off camera, I can't stop saying that off mic that I usually have
- 1:26:38one drink a night and this is my third now.
- 1:26:40So let's let's pray that we can get through this.
- 1:26:45I am queued up and ready to go if you are.
- 1:26:48Absolutely. I'm raring to go.
- 1:26:50We're having great fun and Andrea has never seemed happier.
- 1:26:54Do. You know, yeah, I feel like.
- 1:26:56I feel like when his tardish travels end, he's feeling like
- 1:26:59falling in love like Leela did, or something wonderful like
- 1:27:01that. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:04It's completely, convincingly fall in love like Leela did.
- 1:27:07Or like like he should have. He could have like hopped off
- 1:27:10and Lugopolis like the Planet of Maths.
- 1:27:12That would have been perfect for him.
- 1:27:14Well, actually. And what time flight has an
- 1:27:19alien that desperately needs to merge?
- 1:27:21With a with his. Brain with a Mathematical Genius
- 1:27:24Professor Hayter A times that ends with a mathematical genius
- 1:27:27going off to have an amazing transdimensional experience of
- 1:27:31existence on a new realm by merging with the the Xerophins,
- 1:27:35I think Xerophins, yeah. So maybe you'll have a.
- 1:27:38Lot of it's been as a memorable ending as this, though.
- 1:27:43I don't know what even you're referring to.
- 1:27:45Oh, yeah, sorry. No, we don't know what's.
- 1:27:47Leaving it doesn't say anything. In the Radio Times about Attic
- 1:27:49leaving. In fact, I could have sworn I
- 1:27:50read in the Radio Times that he's in time Fly.
- 1:27:54Oh, well, there we go then. Yeah, I mean, he's the main one.
- 1:27:56Obviously he's the main, the. Main man, I mean he's he's the
- 1:27:58longest running regular. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 1:28:02He he is the the senior member of the cast at this point.
- 1:28:05Skillfully active. Seven and. 1/2 year old who's
- 1:28:08moderately good at maths. We'll we'll tell you that he's
- 1:28:10the most realistic and convincing character in it.
- 1:28:12Certainly more convincing than any air Hostess I've ever met.
- 1:28:15Oh, good grief. Yes, honestly, she's just
- 1:28:18walking around with a gun shooting side men.
- 1:28:21All right, OK, so I'm queued up. Are you queued up?
- 1:28:24I am. What?
- 1:28:25What does that even mean? I don't know why I say that I'm
- 1:28:28going to count as in though in five. 4. 3.
- 1:28:32Two. Let's go.
- 1:28:36Rocket This doesn't feel like a Tuesday night kind of thing, but
- 1:28:43it is a Tuesday night as we. Record.
- 1:28:45So that's entirely appropriate. So our episode 2 and our episode
- 1:28:50four were recorded on precisely the right evening.
- 1:28:54It just popped up on the on the on the information subtitles
- 1:28:58that the the Radio Times and this billing for this was.
- 1:29:01Can the doctor say Badrick? That's a question, of course he.
- 1:29:07Can he's in bloody time Flight. Of course he can.
- 1:29:10Yeah. You know Peter Davidson's hair
- 1:29:13is very long. It is.
- 1:29:16And Peter Davidson. Hair envy is a real thing, on
- 1:29:20Twitter particularly. Oh look, Paul Bearer already
- 1:29:24being manhandled. This the ship is in.
- 1:29:27Warp Dr. That's the line. Oh God, yeah.
- 1:29:31David Banks chucks her across the room.
- 1:29:33Man doesn't. He.
- 1:29:35Tegan's hiding under the stairs with a gun.
- 1:29:38She trained to do that at Qantas.
- 1:29:39Look, she's really critical of this Look like her hair in this
- 1:29:43story. I was listening to a bit of
- 1:29:44commentary earlier. I actually think this is her
- 1:29:46best look. Yeah, and it's often I don't
- 1:29:49know. It's funny when you see, you
- 1:29:50hear. A commentary or something Alison
- 1:29:51Moyet off of singing. Did a DVD.
- 1:29:55Of all of her videos and did. A commentary.
- 1:29:57And all the way through it all the. 80s ones you.
- 1:29:59Just go Oh, I look so awful. Here, why did I let them make me
- 1:30:02put that dress on? I don't.
- 1:30:04Know and it's. Like all of her most famous
- 1:30:05videos, and she just thinks she looks dreadful.
- 1:30:07And it's like, no, it's not. I mean, it's the 80s, there were
- 1:30:11far worse sins committed there. Is an innuendo edit to be done
- 1:30:15at this job, but it's just the lines of people commenting on
- 1:30:17how huge things are. Oh, Pete, there's an innuendo
- 1:30:20edit, ironically, of every Doctor Who story, I think,
- 1:30:24actually. Yes.
- 1:30:26Whatever sucks can be blown. I think that's a line.
- 1:30:35So they've locked off the coordinates.
- 1:30:36They're turning. Their tongues into a.
- 1:30:38Flying Bomb. People say Earth sock has plot
- 1:30:40holes. And I've never, really.
- 1:30:41Pinned them down because I just. No it doesn't.
- 1:30:45It's just like. If you have a if you have a
- 1:30:46failure of imagination so that you can't imagine that
- 1:30:50obviously. When when for example later when
- 1:30:52it does the time travel bit, obviously the earth has moved.
- 1:30:54The earth is always moving. Whatever is, the time travel
- 1:30:57override thing is going to factor that in.
- 1:30:59They don't need to spell it out. That's not a prop hole.
- 1:31:02But do you know what I think? And I'm speaking as an online
- 1:31:05reviewer here. I think you can overanalyse
- 1:31:07these things and forget that this is just supposed to be
- 1:31:10enjoyable, you know? Yeah, and and.
- 1:31:16Here we go. The conference.
- 1:31:17The reason for the red alert? It's all time back to episode
- 1:31:19one. This is how you do an.
- 1:31:21Episode So what is it? It's a conference of all, like
- 1:31:23the great space races coming together against the Cybermen.
- 1:31:28I love the fact that the one thing the side of them really
- 1:31:30hate is conferences. Really.
- 1:31:33Me too. Conferences are illogical.
- 1:31:36We shall destroy them all. Oh.
- 1:31:37Yes. Lovely bit of silver chin going
- 1:31:41on here as David Manks addresses the camera again.
- 1:31:43I've only. Really.
- 1:31:44Really noticing this time how much he talks to the camera.
- 1:31:48Yes, Doctor, despite your interference, we will still
- 1:31:54triumph. And I think he's watched Synth
- 1:31:59Planet. Because.
- 1:32:00He's doing with his voice cadences, the up and down thing
- 1:32:03at only a tiny bit, but in a way that that even was it.
- 1:32:07Christopher, Robbie and Revenge Didn't, didn't, wasn't doing.
- 1:32:10I think, I think he's watched. Be confirmed it It's that sing
- 1:32:14song thing that's discordant and unsettling.
- 1:32:17He has watched Revenge of the Assignment as well and seen how
- 1:32:19far over the top he can go. Yeah.
- 1:32:22Yeah. The The hold is crawling with
- 1:32:27robots, crawling with is a thing in Doctor Who.
- 1:32:31The line The Place is crawling with Daleks turns up in about 6
- 1:32:35Dalek stories. I think they're probably all
- 1:32:37Eric's award stories. I mean, the dialogue is a bit
- 1:32:40clunky. I just saw that woman a minute
- 1:32:43ago, the woman who's about to get jumped on by a side mode
- 1:32:45which comes out of the TARDIS. She's in every scene with with
- 1:32:49James Warwick looking really like apprehensive and and I'm
- 1:32:53scared and with good reason. She's about to die, yes.
- 1:32:59And there's a little bit of humour.
- 1:33:00From Dave though there. As compared to some, this one is
- 1:33:03positively flippant. This is a story that I could not
- 1:33:06imagine Tom Baker in. Just no, not at all the.
- 1:33:10Feeling of panic, The fact that the Doctor gets panicked about
- 1:33:16how this is all going out of his control.
- 1:33:18Oh, I think he. Tries to shoot the Cyberman and
- 1:33:19the gun doesn't work when he gets grabbed.
- 1:33:21Do you know I can't imagine Tom Baker losing like this other
- 1:33:24season? 19 stories.
- 1:33:26Like. Kinder Kinder would be very
- 1:33:29different with Tom Baker, but it would still work.
- 1:33:30He would totally be there with Mary Morris.
- 1:33:33Wouldn't he try and dominate that like he he would?
- 1:33:37Oh. That's a point.
- 1:33:38And when What's his names doing going mad?
- 1:33:40Tom would try to outact him and that wouldn't work, whereas when
- 1:33:44he goes, when Hindle goes back, oh hang on, here we go.
- 1:33:46Sorry, that woman just got jumped on that gets.
- 1:33:49Me everywhere. Oh, IP.
- 1:33:51That woman. Action in the TARDIS?
- 1:33:53Is this the first time we've seen serious action?
- 1:33:56Gunfire in the TARDIS. Imagine imagine little 7 year
- 1:34:00old P watching this like oh this is my safe space, the TARDIS.
- 1:34:05Yeah, a battle inside the TARDIS.
- 1:34:08This is reaching for the door control and you and and it.
- 1:34:11And because they took the effort of establishing an episode one,
- 1:34:14in case you didn't already know that the big red one is the door
- 1:34:17when this is desperately reaching for it.
- 1:34:20If this was the first episode of Doctor here.
- 1:34:22Oh no, Professor. Kyle She's dead and.
- 1:34:24She never got to do anything interesting.
- 1:34:27Never mind this, Sir. Everyone you've ever met is
- 1:34:30dead, Nessa. Don't worry.
- 1:34:31It's just one more. Yeah, Planet.
- 1:34:32Yeah. Sorry, that's not me.
- 1:34:33But it's true. I mean, I'm sorry.
- 1:34:36OK, you bring up a good point there we must address.
- 1:34:39This the lack. Of Well, I mean, sorry,
- 1:34:43something happens to Adric at the end of this story, which I
- 1:34:45won't tell you about. But in the next story, I guess I
- 1:34:47see they deal with that in like, a two-minute scene, Yeah?
- 1:34:51Yeah, Nice. Yeah.
- 1:34:52OK, I'm done. But anyway, let's go on holiday.
- 1:34:56I just. Think.
- 1:34:58Good, that's what you do. Paul, listen, You're right.
- 1:35:02Listen. Howard locked in a bloody
- 1:35:04castle, headbutting a crystal to.
- 1:35:06Dig his out the tunnel. At the end of it.
- 1:35:09Oh, I love you. Oh.
- 1:35:13God, people think that episode is so fucking profound, man.
- 1:35:17Headbutting a crystal for an hour.
- 1:35:18We're all to bring an annoying woman back to life anyway, we're
- 1:35:21not really doing that. We're doing, yes.
- 1:35:23No, but it gets me terribly excited for your appearance on
- 1:35:26another podcast we're doing. Now emotion is a weakness.
- 1:35:35Oh, Dave's so fab. Here look.
- 1:35:36At and Davidson is actually weighing up whether or not to
- 1:35:38let them shoot Tegan, but he decides against it.
- 1:35:40He made the wrong choice. Oh yeah, you're right.
- 1:35:50That sort of thing. You see this a lot and this get
- 1:35:53this when the dog. When when Jodie Whittaker does
- 1:35:55this kind of thing, everyone goes ape shit for it against it
- 1:35:59on Twitter. Oh, she's not being a.
- 1:36:01Hero why isn't she saved in the day and it's.
- 1:36:03Like. You haven't ever watched Doctor
- 1:36:05Who before. Or Doctor Who before 2007.
- 1:36:09Say if you think that the Doctor is someone who always does
- 1:36:12something heroic and brave and points a magic spork at
- 1:36:15something and fixes it. But let's be honest, Pete.
- 1:36:17They're just looking for anything to bitch about.
- 1:36:20Anything at all. Whereas I would only have a
- 1:36:24picture about other people who bitch.
- 1:36:25Which is superior bitch, That's. Way more fun.
- 1:36:32The ultimate in my emotional response.
- 1:36:40He's gloating, but it's logical to gloat.
- 1:36:47Oh, he's being sarcastic now. Well, I love the way that
- 1:36:50there's no way of really making those heads not look ungainly
- 1:36:54when they're like going into short, you know?
- 1:36:57Yeah, but they are. It's only 1981, and yet they are
- 1:37:00so 80s. It's just it's.
- 1:37:04Amazing. And at this point you can go.
- 1:37:08OK, here he is, moustache guy from the caves.
- 1:37:11He's still creeping around. But you're forgetting this is
- 1:37:14not a 90 minute long movie. This is 425 minute long
- 1:37:18episodes. It's and and having someone
- 1:37:22doing something a couple of times or more within that
- 1:37:25period. So there's really cute one.
- 1:37:27Behind them both, if you notice that the guy behind Scott and I.
- 1:37:30Shall keep an eye out. I shall keep an eye out.
- 1:37:32Cute boy. Watch I.
- 1:37:33Can't remind we're doing a commentary.
- 1:37:35Oh. Yeah, we're live, are we?
- 1:37:36God damn it. Yeah, yeah, this is.
- 1:37:39What it was like in the 80s, you couldn't rewind TV just because
- 1:37:41there's a hot extra in the back. I cannot.
- 1:37:43Imagine just watching this and never being able to see it
- 1:37:46again, like. That one.
- 1:37:52Anyway, that's not the thing to say on the commentary, I know.
- 1:37:58The. Name.
- 1:37:59Is. Tegan.
- 1:38:08The side of my nose that it only requires one person to find the
- 1:38:10titanus. See, now this is the point where
- 1:38:13you kind of get that bit in the pit of your stomach, thinking
- 1:38:17this isn't how it usually goes. And.
- 1:38:22There's a moment this is odd. Why is this happening?
- 1:38:26Yeah I'm I'm 7 1/2 and I'm thinking, hang on, this isn't
- 1:38:30how they normally do it. And oh, the little Adric theme
- 1:38:35plays. The bit where he's like, oh,
- 1:38:36I'll see you soon. No you won't.
- 1:38:40And why are they shaking hands? There was a couple of things.
- 1:38:43You occasionally get things in NUU where they fake out on this.
- 1:38:48Oh really? They they give you they hint.
- 1:38:51Oh yeah, someone. 'S.
- 1:38:53Mind, there's a goodbye scene, and there's with a companion
- 1:38:57that's given an air of finality, and then it turns out to just be
- 1:39:00a, you know, the. Funniest one is the one with
- 1:39:02Donna in the same horrid 1. Where?
- 1:39:04Where she's like, yeah, no, I'm just going home.
- 1:39:06I'll be back. Yeah, yeah, so right.
- 1:39:10OK, I'm going to do it now. I'm going to reveal spoilers.
- 1:39:12Adric. Spoiler Adric guys.
- 1:39:14OK. What stays dead and it's real
- 1:39:17and it matters. When I was when I was not much
- 1:39:20younger than 7 1/2, someone got me a version, a book version of
- 1:39:25Little Red Riding Hood where she goes to her granny and grannies
- 1:39:28house isn't there and there's a wolf.
- 1:39:30She kills the wolf and then opens up the the there's a clock
- 1:39:34and she opens the grandfather clock and it turned out granny
- 1:39:37was just hiding in the grandfather clock and I was
- 1:39:39outraged. My 7 1/2 year old self went this
- 1:39:42is ridiculous. I felt sad that Granny had died
- 1:39:45and it turned out she was fine after all.
- 1:39:47And that 7 1/2 year old feeling is how I spent a long period of
- 1:39:52of the 20 teens watching Doctor Who as everyone kept emerging
- 1:39:55from that bloody clock and it turned out they weren't really
- 1:39:58dead and it didn't really matter as to why it feels sad.
- 1:40:01And just when some when when something happens that really
- 1:40:04upsets you, that's that is drama.
- 1:40:07That's the whole point of it. If you then flick a switch and
- 1:40:10say, oh it didn't really happen. It's, it's.
- 1:40:12Worse than disappointing, it's just it's a crime.
- 1:40:17So I've heard. I've heard.
- 1:40:18Now now, yeah that's a good argument.
- 1:40:20I've heard the other side as well on a different commentary I
- 1:40:22did that you shouldn't kill companions that that is
- 1:40:25irresponsible to kill companions.
- 1:40:28I'm I actually fall on your side of this argument.
- 1:40:31I think occasionally it is good to remind the audience that.
- 1:40:36These. You know, there are stakes to
- 1:40:38this, yeah. Yeah, this isn't.
- 1:40:41This isn't an episode of Muppet Babies.
- 1:40:44It's Doctor Who. It's a drama for children, but
- 1:40:47they're in peril. And and and.
- 1:40:50Stephen. Muffet has been really clear
- 1:40:52that he thinks killing a companions are terrible.
- 1:40:54He shouldn't. Upset children by killing a
- 1:40:56companion. Why does he and?
- 1:40:57Why does he keep killing companions then and then?
- 1:40:59Bringing them back. I would.
- 1:41:00You would not get through to the second round of interviews to be
- 1:41:03Doctor Who producer. If you said that to me, the the
- 1:41:07kids have got to believe that there's danger.
- 1:41:10Yeah, but like like, why does he kill Clara then?
- 1:41:13Just to bring her back? Why does he kill Rory just to
- 1:41:15bring him back? Because.
- 1:41:16He thinks. He's God, and he can and I can.
- 1:41:19He can make everything fine by bringing all these dead people
- 1:41:21back. There's I've man in the Titus
- 1:41:23again. Lookout Lisa.
- 1:41:25There's only one God. Amazing close up of Sarah Sutton
- 1:41:29there as her eyes have to dart and she looks at false argument
- 1:41:32and their guns. Do you know?
- 1:41:33Well, you said it in episode one.
- 1:41:34I think Sarah Sutton does pretty good with Lisa, even when she
- 1:41:40doesn't have a lot to do, and she's finally given some action
- 1:41:44to play against in this episode. And she's awesome.
- 1:41:47Yeah, she's and and yeah, you. You could tweet if this was
- 1:41:50Sarah Sun's last story. Put her in Andre's shoes and it
- 1:41:53would be fantastic. She'd be.
- 1:41:54She'd be. Really good too.
- 1:41:55It should. It would be just the.
- 1:41:57Same thing if they decided. To lose, lose her instead of him
- 1:41:59do. You think she would tentatively
- 1:42:02touch that console the same way that Matthew Ward?
- 1:42:04Has does right people make so much too much of that?
- 1:42:07I mean, yes, he's clearly showing away from when you watch
- 1:42:10it back, but but it's in one second.
- 1:42:13I'm sorry, if I was an actor, I would not want a console blowing
- 1:42:16up in my face. OK.
- 1:42:17And it. Was probably the 5th take.
- 1:42:20His fingers were probably. Oh, there we go.
- 1:42:22More cyber men bums. There's like so much cyber arse
- 1:42:25in this. I'm sorry.
- 1:42:26It's it's, yeah. Really.
- 1:42:27There's a lot of cyber arse, yeah?
- 1:42:29That's incredible. Oh, Tegan giving away all the
- 1:42:35cliffs. And it's addressing it because
- 1:42:42it's it's it's like same with you that in 40 years time people
- 1:42:45watching this and saying but surely Earth radar would pick up
- 1:42:48the TARDIS. So Tegan explains why not.
- 1:42:51That's the thing people will. Complain when there's a line
- 1:42:53like that explaining something, and then if that line wasn't
- 1:42:56there. Then they're going to, Yeah,
- 1:42:58about how? Earth's script didn't even
- 1:42:59address the fact that obviously the TARDIS would be picked up
- 1:43:01can. You know, though, there's a
- 1:43:03contingent of Doctor Who fans that just don't want to have
- 1:43:05fun. They're there literally, to pick
- 1:43:08holes. I want.
- 1:43:10I just want although. I'm loving the action and the
- 1:43:13and the and the drama and the peril it ultimately is about.
- 1:43:16These you've got to. Care who these people are.
- 1:43:18You'd have to like them. But you've got.
- 1:43:20I mean, I wouldn't hold on, Barrel Reid, to be my line
- 1:43:23manager. No, Captain Don Briggs to be my
- 1:43:26line. Manager I wouldn't want Adrick
- 1:43:27to be my companion, but. Because she's so good.
- 1:43:30She's. Not a two-dimensional bully.
- 1:43:33I mean, she is a bully, but she's not a two-dimensional
- 1:43:35bully. So you you nevertheless you sort
- 1:43:37of want you want her to end up all you're on her side.
- 1:43:40So I'm saying. I think there's a, there's a
- 1:43:42level of threat in this which is unusual even for the time that
- 1:43:46they've put the the regulars into, you know, and so you
- 1:43:49really care because the regulars are in this like extreme peril,
- 1:43:52yeah. And you know how many days ago
- 1:43:567, like like 15 days ago, these guys were all just doing the
- 1:44:00Charleston together on on TV and now they're in this battle.
- 1:44:05Have your last dance, Adric. As it's Tegan had launched
- 1:44:11herself with the target console that actually instigates, I
- 1:44:14think the. That bit there where he holds
- 1:44:18her elbows and screams at her on the commentary.
- 1:44:21Her and Peter Davidson are roaring with laughter at that
- 1:44:24bit. The Adric Adric's actually been
- 1:44:30given something to do. Lovely.
- 1:44:31Flip here. You notice Adric and Berger are
- 1:44:34the ones who are saving the day here or trying to save the day
- 1:44:36here, and Briggs is the captain is just having to run backwards
- 1:44:40and forwards, giving them updates and telling them, you
- 1:44:42know we're running. Out of time.
- 1:44:43That's a great line. You get great lines like that in
- 1:44:46in who Monster Pentagon is full of it.
- 1:44:48Like Monster Pentagon Three. And I watched it the other week
- 1:44:50and it's. Fine, It's so much.
- 1:44:51It's all right. Don't you watch it as?
- 1:44:53When did you watch Monster? I don't watch Monster Pentagon.
- 1:44:55This week, yeah, it was a couple.
- 1:44:58Of weeks ago, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:45:00Just a week ago, yeah. You know.
- 1:45:02But in it like. One of the most boring classes
- 1:45:04that people keep saying we haven't much time and it's like
- 1:45:07obviously love. You've got four more episodes.
- 1:45:09You really have got much time. Do you know the bit that made me
- 1:45:12raw was when Queen Phaleris looking at all those bodies in
- 1:45:16the mind and she's like, look at what you've done and Echoes is
- 1:45:20like never mind, wow. And it just grabs the heart.
- 1:45:23It's just wonderful. I I I have a lot of affection
- 1:45:26for that. Story Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:31But why are we talking about the monster of peloton when we have
- 1:45:34a shock in front? Of us I.
- 1:45:36Know Davidson, The coordinates are constantly changing.
- 1:45:39He's. He's in.
- 1:45:40Town. Be 200% DROWN mode.
- 1:45:43I think I adore the fact that Adric is actually being given
- 1:45:46something useful to do as well. So you so there's like this race
- 1:45:49against time. Will he be able to crack this
- 1:45:51thing to save himself? And then, and he still could
- 1:45:55have got out. He still could have.
- 1:45:57Escaped like he could have gone with them in that escape pole.
- 1:45:59Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:46:00Yeah. And it's been a succession.
- 1:46:02Of of ticking bomb. You know, right?
- 1:46:04Go go back to the ticking bomb in episode 2.
- 1:46:07Of. The remaining episode one it's
- 1:46:09that's that is the pace of this and the structure of this and
- 1:46:12and it's just one after the other all escalating.
- 1:46:15Yeah. But the and the music is when
- 1:46:18this damaged silent man starts crawling up the stairs and the.
- 1:46:22Music. Is all distorted and.
- 1:46:24Well, I can't. I kind of call that music like
- 1:46:26the farts of doom because it if you listen to it carefully, it
- 1:46:29does sound like someone farting into a mic.
- 1:46:35Now people complain that the Earth is seen there, and you get
- 1:46:41this moment where it's just occurred to the Doctor, but it's
- 1:46:44all links back to that scene in episode one.
- 1:46:47People complain that this is the Earth, this is not the Earth of
- 1:46:4965,000,000 years ago, but I think that's deliberate because
- 1:46:53they must have weighed up. People are going to think it's a
- 1:46:55different planet. Or what the actual the actual
- 1:46:56the visual of the earth? Yeah, because this is travelled
- 1:46:59back to 65,000,000 years, the earth shouldn't look the same
- 1:47:03scientifically. I'm sorry, but oh Beryl, save
- 1:47:06him. Andrik's doing typing.
- 1:47:08This is just what I'm like when it's.
- 1:47:09Time on large? Yes, when I don't want to go to
- 1:47:17work. That's what my other half says
- 1:47:18to me, and that is an old joke. And they get into the escape
- 1:47:22pod. Oh, at Rick.
- 1:47:24What are you doing? He knows, mind you, this is this
- 1:47:31is good because he's been an arrogant, precocious little shit
- 1:47:33throughout. He thinks he's very smart and
- 1:47:36this is the one time it bites him in the ass and.
- 1:47:42This is the moment when there's a viewer and I'm thinking in
- 1:47:461982, I'm thinking, wait, the escape?
- 1:47:49What has left? And the space.
- 1:47:52And we know and at this point at school.
- 1:47:53They were still teaching you. The idea that the dinosaurs.
- 1:47:55Were killed by a meteorite was only a theory.
- 1:47:57You at school you were being taught there were all sorts of
- 1:47:59theories as to how the dinosaurs died out.
- 1:48:01No one had found the crater, or if they had found the crater,
- 1:48:04they weren't sure. And whether they're now sure.
- 1:48:07And seeing all this happen in real time in Doctor Who was just
- 1:48:13so weird. It's exciting, though.
- 1:48:15You're seeing, you're seeing, like, massive history take
- 1:48:18place. Yeah, and it's doing that thing
- 1:48:21of they're teasing the audience. They're hoping that the average
- 1:48:257 or 8 year old has just figured this out at the same point that
- 1:48:28the plot's telling it to you. It's got the TARDIS.
- 1:48:32Oh man. Oh my word, Adric's still on.
- 1:48:39Board. More sad Adric music, but the
- 1:48:45Doctor's got his. So you're like, you know, if
- 1:48:46you're like a typical doctor and you're like, OK, so Andrew, it's
- 1:48:49going to unplug the thing, it's all going to be fine, you know?
- 1:48:53Yeah, because then the one thing that would never cross your mind
- 1:48:56would be the Doctor travelling back in time to loop and get out
- 1:48:59of it and pick him up before it exploded.
- 1:49:00Because you. Just know that that does not
- 1:49:02happen in Doctor Who in exactly the same way that, you know the
- 1:49:05Jr. Ewing isn't going to pull the
- 1:49:07laser gun out of his pocket and shoot people in Dallas.
- 1:49:09It's just Doctor Who does not do that look.
- 1:49:11It doesn't cross. Your mind.
- 1:49:13This is great. Tegan's leaping under the he.
- 1:49:16Starts blasting the shit out of that console now.
- 1:49:22That's the only way to get the budget for a new one.
- 1:49:25Yeah. And.
- 1:49:29Who screams? Is it Tegan?
- 1:49:31Honestly, who screams? I think it's Tegan.
- 1:49:32You can't tell. I think it's Tegan.
- 1:49:34I think she something actually called Janet Fielding.
- 1:49:38People say that Davidson doesn't pick up a gun.
- 1:49:40Like, really. Yeah.
- 1:49:44And the dogs are using the gun on the side of my neck.
- 1:49:46I mean, of course, you know, on Adrick's Forgotten.
- 1:49:53So yes, Adrick, you've forgotten to get into the flipping escape
- 1:49:56pod, you plonker. Do you know as well there's no,
- 1:49:58right? So.
- 1:49:58At this point is now still possible.
- 1:50:00We're thinking this is we've got so little time and and this is
- 1:50:05pushing the here we go, OK, he's doing his.
- 1:50:07Typing. That's how I type.
- 1:50:09If I'm it's. It's.
- 1:50:13Perfectly sensible kind of typing.
- 1:50:15Totally. And look at that side.
- 1:50:17Man in the dark. Behind them.
- 1:50:19There's no light on it at all, but you can see it.
- 1:50:22I actually really like his line delivery here.
- 1:50:24Do you know Attrick often gave terrible line deliveries, but
- 1:50:26his oh now I never know if I was right.
- 1:50:28It's such a great part in line. Yeah.
- 1:50:32And if you were. Looking at the time writer
- 1:50:34during that scene, you're not watching it, no.
- 1:50:37And he does a little tilt of. His head shall I.
- 1:50:40He's saying something funny. Hey, do you know I don't think
- 1:50:42this is going to work well. Well.
- 1:50:44No, because look, the doctors at the controls and the doctors
- 1:50:46just said that he must say, Patrick, I'm like, yes, doctor,
- 1:50:49you must. No, I think.
- 1:50:51I think his time's up if time's up.
- 1:50:53Looking at the screen and chatting and Rick.
- 1:50:55Matt finished. He's got his bit of string and
- 1:51:00he's flying towards II's probably nice.
- 1:51:05And Oh my word. And just the hum of the TARDIS.
- 1:51:11And then what's some sad music? What?
- 1:51:13What? What?
- 1:51:14What's happened? Tegan is pissed.
- 1:51:23Adrick. A lot of the the silent credits
- 1:51:27just killed me in In Memory of Adrick at. 1st.
- 1:51:34I need and it's like, OK, what's going to happen?
- 1:51:36And then nothing. And then you've got the badge
- 1:51:38and I'm I can. It's all the subtitles.
- 1:51:41Silence. Silence.
- 1:51:42No thing. I just.
- 1:51:44It still doesn't get top billing.
- 1:51:45It's Bell Reed. I guess the next billing after
- 1:51:47the doctor, then Adrick. But I kind of I understand the
- 1:51:51reasoning of this, like the this kind of soap opera silent
- 1:51:55credits to make. The crumbled thing.
- 1:51:58And at this precise moment my mum walked in and said, why is
- 1:52:02there no sound on? Have you broken it?
- 1:52:04My mum had me. In bed?
- 1:52:06Did she read what? Did you cry?
- 1:52:07Can I ask, Did you cry? I didn't.
- 1:52:11I know I didn't cry. It's Doctor Who.
- 1:52:14It's like. But I was stunned and shocked.
- 1:52:17I was upset and like, Oh my God, really?
- 1:52:19What happens next? When I when I spoke with Comrade
- 1:52:23Westmass the other week, he he told me that he went up to his
- 1:52:26room very quietly and burst into tears for most of the evening.
- 1:52:31I thought was so he. Does that most he does that most
- 1:52:33evening. Yeah.
- 1:52:37Usually I have to do one of these commentaries, I think, OK,
- 1:52:42so that's that's that's the end of earth shock.
- 1:52:46If you could summarize in 3 minutes please, because that's
- 1:52:50how long we have left. Yes.
- 1:52:53What is fantastic about of Shock?
- 1:52:56Why is this the best story? Doctor Who is an amazingly
- 1:53:00flexible format. It can do 1000 different things,
- 1:53:03and it in this instance it does a science fiction action movie
- 1:53:10unbelievably well for a show that's being made to be shown
- 1:53:14twice a week on BBC in a regular BBC studio with no special
- 1:53:19resources beyond above and beyond what a normal show would
- 1:53:23get. Peter Grimwade worked miracles
- 1:53:26and got his cast to achieve things that are just
- 1:53:30inconceivably good, and they tried the same thing many times,
- 1:53:33and it doesn't always happen as successfully as it does in Earth
- 1:53:36Shock. And every time they try it, it's
- 1:53:38still worth doing. Earth Shock is the one where it
- 1:53:41lands and they've got someone who is a star of light
- 1:53:43entertainment in comedy but can do so much more.
- 1:53:46And she does so much more in Barrel Reed and and the little
- 1:53:50the actors who haven't got big parts still just take it totally
- 1:53:54seriously and it's got funny moments and but it's not.
- 1:53:59This isn't one of the funny ones, obviously, but it it's
- 1:54:02full of good humour and it matters and it's full of
- 1:54:05consequences. And it's educational.
- 1:54:07And it teaches you about the dinosaurs being wiped out, and
- 1:54:11it teaches you about how evil evil can be and that good
- 1:54:17doesn't always win, and that there isn't a magic reset
- 1:54:20switch, but you just carry on. And that's why I think Earth
- 1:54:25Shock is the best dog to his story.
- 1:54:29I am convinced, OK, that was that was that was the most
- 1:54:33compelling evidence I have ever heard for why a shock is the
- 1:54:38best dog to his story ever. That just.
- 1:54:41If I'm ever, if I'm ever on trial, I have.
- 1:54:43The judges hadn't as much to drink as you have.
- 1:54:50Yeah, yeah. My, my, my faculties are
- 1:54:52completely blurred, so anything you say, it's just that.
- 1:54:54Incredible. But just what about you?
- 1:54:57Come on, What? About you?
- 1:54:58What about you? Oh, God, I've only got like 50
- 1:55:00seconds. OK, well, Adric dies.
- 1:55:03There you go. That's why Earth Shock is the
- 1:55:05best story ever. No, I what?
- 1:55:09But what I would like to say is thank you very much for joining
- 1:55:12me today. It has been a absolute blast.
- 1:55:16I've had a hoot. You've been really fun to to
- 1:55:19chat to watching this. I hope I haven't blathered on
- 1:55:22too annoyingly. It's been really.
- 1:55:24Fun, I think. People are going to love this
- 1:55:25and I hope what I will, I will ask you off Mike.
- 1:55:28I will hope that we will see you again on this podcast that I
- 1:55:31will try and twist your arm away from this.
- 1:55:34Thank you very much. Twist away.
