- 0:00Speaker 1: Not just the best, but the best of the best
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the best of the best.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's one more thing. I'm one more.
- 0:13Speaker 3: So.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The folks at the Ringer dot com whatever that is,
- 0:17Speaker 1: came out with a list of the greatest TV episodes
- 0:19Speaker 1: All Time a few years ago. I think it was
- 0:21Speaker 1: as far back as twenty eighteen actually, and they decided
- 0:25Speaker 1: to update that it's the greatest episodes of all time,
- 0:30Speaker 1: not the greatest shows of all time, although obviously it's
- 0:32Speaker 1: a similar.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Question of all time or of like this century, or
- 0:38Speaker 4: of all I'm pretty sure it's going back to I
- 0:40Speaker 4: Love Lucy.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I Well, gosh, I don't you know, I haven't gone
- 0:43Speaker 1: through the entire list because they go at the top
- 0:44Speaker 1: one hundred. Among their rules were only one episode per show,
- 0:50Speaker 1: so you don't have like seventeen different sopranos episodes for instance. Anyway,
- 0:59Speaker 1: you know, I was tim to go off on a tangent,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and I think I will. It's funny how Hansen and
- 1:02Speaker 1: a lot of people say the sopranos. Even though I've
- 1:07Speaker 1: been singing choral music since I was a little kid,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I've never heard anybody refer to the high voice as
- 1:12Speaker 1: the soprano. It's always soprano, and in the show he
- 1:17Speaker 1: fing calls himself Tony soprano.
- 1:19Speaker 2: So why do you say soprano? Are you trying to
- 1:23Speaker 2: sound sophisticated or what? They just explain it to me.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I don't know, but this is a perfectly normal thing
- 1:29Speaker 4: to be angry about. Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I watched a great episode of The Flintsteins last night
- 1:34Speaker 1: where Fred and Bartie we're arguing over this this giant
- 1:37Speaker 1: dinosaur steak Scenefeld. Very funny, right, Jerry Seenfeld, He is
- 1:42Speaker 1: so funny. Yes, All in the Family starring Archie Bounquet,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Oh so groundbreaking, totally reasonably right, right, So we can't
- 1:54Speaker 1: go with all one hundred obviously. The most surprising thing
- 1:57Speaker 1: I will tell you this is, and we will get
- 2:00Speaker 1: to the top ten to a second because we've got
- 2:01Speaker 1: a little audio to go with each one, is the
- 2:04Speaker 1: number of shows I haven't watched at all that made
- 2:07Speaker 1: it into the top twenty.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So we'll just zip through those number two.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Just thinking about that, my son is like obsessed with
- 2:13Speaker 4: House right now?
- 2:15Speaker 5: Now?
- 2:15Speaker 4: When was that quite a few years ago? He loves it,
- 2:18Speaker 4: can't wait to watch the next couple of episodes every night.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It's a great show. You know, there's a quirky doctor drama.
- 2:24Speaker 4: There's time fillers that are still out there that will
- 2:26Speaker 4: take care of the rest of my wife, probably since
- 2:29Speaker 4: I haven't seen most game. Oh, you'll definitely get the
- 2:31Speaker 4: idea by the end of this list, So number twenty
- 2:34Speaker 4: we'll just do the top twenty is an episode called
- 2:36Speaker 4: b An of Atlanta.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The Donald Glover Vehicle.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The most memorial line from this episode the price is
- 2:45Speaker 1: on the can though need illegal context for that. One
- 2:50Speaker 1: nineteen and there's a great deal of commentary explaining why
- 2:54Speaker 1: the series was groundbreaking, or the particular episode was so important,
- 2:58Speaker 1: or change TV is a New Family Jersey Shore season one,
- 3:04Speaker 1: episode one, and it talks about its effect on reality
- 3:09Speaker 1: TV and how the idea of it wasn't bringing a
- 3:13Speaker 1: bunch of different people together. Was bringing a bunch of
- 3:15Speaker 1: people from a subculture together and everybody watching them and
- 3:19Speaker 1: saying I'll be damned.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Right and that. Yeah, that led to so many different
- 3:23Speaker 4: examples of that sort of thing. Sure, I still quote
- 3:26Speaker 4: that show.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You know, I never watched it because I thought it
- 3:29Speaker 1: would drain my IQ from my head. But we all
- 3:34Speaker 1: have our guilty pleasures.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the Paully from the show.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Every time the cabs would show up, he'd.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Go the CAB's here.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Is that anytime a cab would come.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So this is gonna take a long time to get through.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But anyway, what's the most memorable line from the episode.
- 3:50Speaker 1: The shock of the Jersey Shore premiere was so profound
- 3:53Speaker 1: that many one line utterances have gone on to live
- 3:56Speaker 1: an infamy. Snooky arrived declaring the potties here, Jenny aka
- 4:02Speaker 1: Jwow explained herself by way of a mission statement, after
- 4:05Speaker 1: I have sex with a guy, I will rip their
- 4:07Speaker 1: heads off. And then the one line that had to
- 4:10Speaker 1: be discussed at nauseum was Mike Sorrentino explaining.
- 4:13Speaker 2: My abs are so ripped. It's called the situation.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Oh Roy, that's where that came from.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Okay, number eighteen, What the hell did I do?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Is the name of the episode from the Jinx That
- 4:26Speaker 1: was the series about that Robert Durst murderer. Oh right,
- 4:31Speaker 1: who was miked up when he admitted I killed them
- 4:35Speaker 1: all of course, Yes, yeah, craziness Number seventeen, episode three
- 4:40Speaker 1: of Adolescents. I read a review that really said it
- 4:45Speaker 1: was kind of woke in Lefty in Illinois. You and
- 4:48Speaker 1: I haven't gone there. It's on Netflix right now. Sixteen
- 4:52Speaker 1: two Cathedrals from The West Wing. Judy and I watched
- 4:56Speaker 1: that show years and years ago, absolutely loved it.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Do you think that would hold up? I never saw
- 5:01Speaker 4: a minute of The West Wing.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah it would. I mean it's yeah, I think it would.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I haven't watched it in a long time. But as they
- 5:11Speaker 1: point out, it's for all the melodrama, Shakespearean expression of doubt, arrogance, guilt,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and anger from one of TV's last great non anti
- 5:20Speaker 1: heroes of the century, Jed Bartlett, who was a sincere man.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I disagreed with this politics on the show, but you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: he seemed to be a decent enough film.
- 5:29Speaker 4: That was Charlie Sheen's old man.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Indeed, yeah, some call him Martin Sheen. Let's see number
- 5:35Speaker 1: thirty to fifteen Losing My Religion from Grey's Anatomy. Interesting.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Never watched that one. Number fourteen One Way Out and.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I had a lot of girlfriends. I love Grey's Anatomy
- 5:46Speaker 4: and that was very popular.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Oh oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Number fourteen one Way Out from Andor, which I'm about
- 5:51Speaker 1: to watch. I think, oh, that's season one, the last
- 5:54Speaker 1: episode of season one. I think I loved and Dora,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm about to watch it for the third time.
- 5:58Speaker 2: It's crazy, flee.
- 5:59Speaker 4: What is that?
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's the Star Wars vehicle about an obscure revolutionary and
- 6:06Speaker 1: common people fighting back against fascism. Actually, I mean it's
- 6:10Speaker 1: all a metaphor for totalitarianism.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And then they end number thirteen the Way we Are
- 6:17Speaker 1: from Severance, which I loved. My wife got tired of.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It was too weird and mind bending, for that was
- 6:26Speaker 1: the your You go into work and you go into
- 6:30Speaker 1: an elevator.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Your mind is blanked and there's work.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You as you come out of work gets blanked again,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and there's not at work you and not at work
- 6:42Speaker 1: you has no awareness nor memory of what happened at work,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and vice versa.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all about the nature of identity and it's
- 6:52Speaker 1: really good. It is a pardon me mind fuck, But
- 6:56Speaker 1: I can't enjoy that Number twelve the pilot from the
- 7:00Speaker 1: OC huh never saw number eleven this extraordinary being from
- 7:08Speaker 1: Watchman season one. I read the graphic novel. I have
- 7:12Speaker 1: not seen the book better than everyone. Yes, thank you
- 7:18Speaker 1: for acknowledging that. Finally, here's your top ten. This is
- 7:23Speaker 1: the final four episode from Survivor season one.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Oh wow, I feel we all went to the island's
- 7:32Speaker 2: spirits that we have learned to come to know. So
- 7:35Speaker 2: let it be in the end the way mother nature
- 7:38Speaker 2: intended it to be.
- 7:39Speaker 1: For the snake to eat.
- 7:40Speaker 2: The wrap.
- 7:48Speaker 4: And then they hurled them into a volcano. What happened?
- 7:50Speaker 2: Then? That's my recollection of it.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yes, number nine, I think a Survivor kicked off lots
- 7:55Speaker 1: of that kind of shows. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: that was an US hit back in the day.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Do they give a year for that? I don't remember
- 8:04Speaker 2: the year.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Because I remember our old news person long before Katy Green,
- 8:08Speaker 4: Jamie Coffee was trying to get on that show way
- 8:10Speaker 4: back in the day.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Oh that's right, I'd forgotten about that.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, number nine the episode middle Ground from the third
- 8:17Speaker 1: season of The Wire.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You still don't get it too, huh? Seen a bounch
- 8:24Speaker 3: of money, bro, the boy gave you up, that's right,
- 8:31Speaker 3: and we had to touch his asthlee though.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I would definitely want to watch a wire. So many
- 8:37Speaker 4: people I like loved The Wire. That's about what h
- 8:44Speaker 4: catching drug kingpins or whatever.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's about the drug trade and uh and
- 8:50Speaker 1: gritty urban life in Baltimore.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, uh.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Number eight Connor's wedding from the fourth season of Succession
- 9:00Speaker 1: is dead.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Okay, so we're gonna go see him?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Do you want to?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Shouldn't we?
- 9:12Speaker 2: I mean, it's not gonna get angry if we don't.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Some fine atmospheric sound there. Wow, that was really compelling.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Is that the show that's about Ruper Burndock's family?
- 9:31Speaker 2: Kind of yes?
- 9:33Speaker 1: Loosely yes, indeed. Number seven greatest TV episode of all time?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Episode two point four of Chappelle's show, season two.
- 9:44Speaker 2: What are the five fingers side of the face? What?
- 9:56Speaker 5: I great?
- 10:02Speaker 2: That's right? The fire? What did the fingers say to
- 10:07Speaker 2: the face?
- 10:08Speaker 1: Slap, followed by Chappelle cementing his legend by declaring, for
- 10:12Speaker 1: the tenth time of the skit, I'm Rick James bitch.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Chappelle is such a weird dude. That's before he went
- 10:18Speaker 4: crazy right and disappeared to another country and then came
- 10:21Speaker 4: back and went on Oprah and stuff. He is a strange, strange,
- 10:24Speaker 4: creative dude.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And just when I thought he was a hero of
- 10:27Speaker 1: truth telling him the rest of it, he went off
- 10:29Speaker 1: with his go to Saudi Arabia saying you can tell
- 10:32Speaker 1: him she was more here than in the US Jackass
- 10:36Speaker 1: episode number six, the awesome Mandius episode of Breaking Bad.
- 10:43Speaker 2: He want me to beg the smartest guy I ever met.
- 10:51Speaker 5: You're too stupid to see.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He made up his mind ten minutes ago.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Did everybody here watch Breaking That?
- 11:02Speaker 2: But me?
- 11:03Speaker 4: I'm watching it again right now. Oh, it's such a
- 11:07Speaker 4: good show. I watched the finale first saw when the
- 11:10Speaker 4: finale are right, I'll watch that. I had no idea
- 11:12Speaker 4: what was going on because I've never seen it botally, And.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Then I know I know the one person on earth
- 11:18Speaker 1: any trailer.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Then years later, when my wife dump me, I started
- 11:22Speaker 4: watching the show because I needed something to do, and
- 11:25Speaker 4: I got about halfway through the first season.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 11:27Speaker 4: I just don't have time as a father to.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Get into it.
- 11:29Speaker 4: But it's fantastic. Absolutely loved it. Same with Better Call Saul.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Just both those shows fantastic. I'll get to them someday.
- 11:36Speaker 1: All right, here's a question that's way out of date,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but the episodes that focused on their domestic domestics drive
- 11:43Speaker 1: Do you eat that like your vegetables or do you
- 11:45Speaker 1: skip it? Do you push it to the side of
- 11:47Speaker 1: the plate and go to the next episode. Oh maybe,
- 11:52Speaker 1: maybe exactly, it's eating your vigtuals. All right, here's your
- 11:56Speaker 1: top five number five, fab weird, quirky The Pine Barons
- 12:04Speaker 1: episode of The Sopranos.
- 12:06Speaker 4: The guy you're looking for is an ex command though
- 12:08Speaker 4: he killed sixteen chech and rebel single handed. Get the
- 12:11Speaker 4: fuck out of here. Nice. He was with the Interior Ministry. Guys,
- 12:16Speaker 4: so I've got a Russian greenbow.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Ray.
- 12:19Speaker 3: This guy cannot come back to tell this story, do
- 12:23Speaker 3: you understand?
- 12:26Speaker 4: Oh, now he doesn't get to the next best line
- 12:29Speaker 4: where he tells he tells him. Yeah, he's some sort
- 12:33Speaker 4: of interior decorator or something.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, oh god, that was funny.
- 12:41Speaker 4: The Sopranos is so freaking good. I mean, it's just
- 12:44Speaker 4: mind boggling how good that show was.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah, direct you that direct episode directed by Steve Buscemi,
- 12:52Speaker 1: by the way, Yeah, yeah, it was wild and offbeat
- 12:58Speaker 1: in the different pace at the time.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I'm kind of controversial, but.
- 13:01Speaker 4: So Chris Christopher, So Pollie says to Christopher when Polly
- 13:04Speaker 4: gets off the phone. There, he says to Christopher, Yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 4: you won't believe this. He was a Green Beret. He's
- 13:09Speaker 4: an interior decorator or something, and Christopher says that's something.
- 13:12Speaker 4: His house looked like shit.
- 13:18Speaker 2: He s what the interior department.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Oh never, oh fu interior decorated His.
- 13:26Speaker 4: House looked like shit.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Oh.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And then they mentioned the Soprano's Funniest Hour wasn't directed
- 13:34Speaker 1: by the Coen Brothers, but feels like it could have been.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And it was actually Steve be sent me as I mentioned,
- 13:38Speaker 2: uh four who goes there?
- 13:40Speaker 1: From True Detective season one, which a lot of my
- 13:45Speaker 1: friends raved about.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Tell so.
- 13:58Speaker 1: It was a long tracking shot that's quite a second
- 14:02Speaker 1: scene or storm through the Stash house raids sequence staged
- 14:10Speaker 1: in a single wandering take by Kerrie Fukaga and a cinematographer. Anyway, Uh, yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 1: I've heard over and over again the True Detective season
- 14:20Speaker 1: one was really really good.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll watch that someday too.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Hanson says, you got to see that scene. It's amazing.
- 14:27Speaker 4: I believe it.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to what was the True Detective? Which
- 14:34Speaker 1: was the show with Woody Harrelson and uh.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Who the hecke wasn't it? Michael shut up? No, Woody Harrelson.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Oh and uh all right, all right, all right, that's
- 14:50Speaker 1: the show, right.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Oh it was okay, I did see that, all right,
- 14:54Speaker 2: that's funny. Oh, let's well it did. It was just
- 14:58Speaker 2: years ago. Let's see all right.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Number three, Uh, the Reins of Castamir came a throne
- 15:06Speaker 1: season three.
- 15:07Speaker 5: My king has married and I owe my new queen
- 15:10Speaker 5: and wedding gift.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that's your red wedding episode. Ooh o bloody, it's
- 15:30Speaker 1: so shocking.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I never saw a moment of Game of Thrones either,
- 15:33Speaker 4: but I look forward to that watching that someday.
- 15:35Speaker 2: There's dragons in it.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Uh.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Number two episodes.
- 15:40Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of blues clues during that period.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Mmm, couple of little kids. What's your greatest episode of
- 15:46Speaker 2: blues clues when the.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Male shows up? Always liked that.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Oh, those are always good.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Katie spit, Katie spit or coffee god.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Let's see episode number two the Suitcase from another show
- 16:04Speaker 1: I was acutely aware of, but never watch more than
- 16:06Speaker 1: like twenty minutes of Mad Men season four.
- 16:09Speaker 2: That's the way it works. There are no credits on commercials.
- 16:12Speaker 2: You got the klio. It's your job. I give you money,
- 16:16Speaker 2: you give me ideas. You never say thank you. That's
- 16:19Speaker 2: what the money is for. You're young, you will get
- 16:23Speaker 2: your recognition. Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 4: I never really got into that show. I saw the
- 16:28Speaker 4: first episode though, and I remember what a great hook
- 16:30Speaker 4: that was. Like the opening part of the first episode.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I don't know if you remember it, but it's it
- 16:35Speaker 4: starts basically with him having this sex scene with this
- 16:37Speaker 4: hot chicken everything like that, and you're making all these
- 16:39Speaker 4: assumptions about what this show is about. And then he
- 16:42Speaker 4: walks into his house with a different woman who is
- 16:44Speaker 4: his wife, and his kids and everything like that, and
- 16:46Speaker 4: you're like, Okay, what's going on here? That was one
- 16:48Speaker 4: of the great hook pull you in, make you wonder
- 16:52Speaker 4: what's coming next openings I've ever seen.
- 16:56Speaker 1: That's number two, number one. The name of the episodisode
- 17:00Speaker 1: is the Constant, And they had lost me as a
- 17:04Speaker 1: hardcore fan by now. It's from the fourth season of Lost.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I've been on an island. That copenny? Is that really cute? Yeah?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yes, it's me.
- 17:23Speaker 2: You believe me, You still care about me? Large trying
- 17:31Speaker 2: to hear those two are back together.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Unfortunately, you'd reach me easier with like the fourth episode
- 17:36Speaker 4: from two thousand and two, s Face the Nation would
- 17:38Speaker 4: be more likely if I watched it, but so everybody
- 17:41Speaker 4: loved Lost. Everybody I know didn't like the way it ended.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Did they write themselves into a corner on Lost? Like,
- 17:47Speaker 4: did they start with an idea and then didn't know
- 17:49Speaker 4: how to end it?
- 17:50Speaker 1: Or interestingly, well yes, interestingly they make the point that
- 17:55Speaker 1: most of the main characters were shoved way to the side,
- 17:58Speaker 1: and it was about those two character in the final season.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I didn't get there because it was the sort of tantalizing,
- 18:06Speaker 1: just out of reach, weird mystery, what's really going on here?
- 18:10Speaker 5: What?
- 18:11Speaker 2: Episode after episode after episode? They were never pay it
- 18:13Speaker 2: off it like it at all.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Yeah. I think the best TV shows of all time
- 18:18Speaker 4: have tended to be where they've got the whole arc
- 18:21Speaker 4: of the story figured out ahead of time, an as
- 18:24Speaker 4: opposed to you get picked up for a season and
- 18:26Speaker 4: you think, what are we gonna do next year?
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:29Speaker 1: For as screwed up as Britain is in a lot
- 18:31Speaker 1: of ways, that's that's really the model is they will
- 18:34Speaker 1: have a limited run series and it will be eight episodes,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and maybe they will do another season, but it will
- 18:42Speaker 1: be an eight episode arc, as opposed to the never
- 18:46Speaker 1: ending Hey we.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Got renewed again?
- 18:47Speaker 1: We ought to string along the dumb bastards for other
- 18:50Speaker 1: twelve episodes.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Well, well, and you can understand why, you know, why
- 18:53Speaker 4: would you want to give up the money the original
- 18:55Speaker 4: Office which became however, many seasons of the Office we
- 18:57Speaker 4: had in the United States. It was only two seasons
