The Ars Goetia: The 72 Spirits Solomon Was Said to Command
The Ars Goetia is the best-known section of the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis, often called The Lesser Key of Solomon. In its surviving form, it is a seventeenth-century grimoire catalogue of seventy-two spirits, each assigned a rank, a name, an appearance, an office, subordinate legions, and often a distinctive seal. The book claims the authority of King Solomon, the biblical ruler famed for wisdom and, in later legend, command over demons or jinn. Yet the surviving manuscripts were copied more than two thousand years after Solomon’s traditional lifetime.
