Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Padre Berliever, Mason Miller back on foul territory. Mason, good
- 0:07Speaker 1: to see you, man. How's the off season going for you?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Good?
- 0:10Speaker 3: A cel off season's going great. Snow falling in Pittsburgh
- 0:14Speaker 3: right now, So I'm ready to get back to spring
- 0:16Speaker 3: training here soon. Get some get some sun.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and you happen to be playing for a team
- 0:22Speaker 1: where you'll get a lot of sun the entire season now,
- 0:24Speaker 1: which will be nice for you too. So I wanted
- 0:27Speaker 1: to start, actually Mason with WBC News since it's real hot.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Did you see the news today about Clayton Kershaw?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I did about that one.
- 0:35Speaker 3: What do you think count count me in the surprised boat?
- 0:39Speaker 2: But uh, you know that just adds.
- 0:41Speaker 3: To the uh you.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Know, the further allure of the WBC.
- 0:46Speaker 3: You got guys coming out of the woodwork that you know,
- 0:48Speaker 3: you weren't even expecting to go to an already like
- 0:51Speaker 3: star studded cast of guys, and I'm just so stoked
- 0:55Speaker 3: to go hang out with them, and uh, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 3: try to bring us thing home for for our country.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Do you do you go into it saying yes, you're
- 1:03Speaker 4: playing for Team USA, But do you go into it
- 1:05Speaker 4: saying Okay, Clayton Kershaw's pitching, ah, man, I hope he's
- 1:10Speaker 4: got it. I hope. I hope he's got it because
- 1:13Speaker 4: we're looking to win this thing and you need everybody
- 1:17Speaker 4: hitting on all cylinders because even a team like Brazil
- 1:20Speaker 4: can can get a win, even a team like Great
- 1:23Speaker 4: Britain can get a win, and that could mean you
- 1:26Speaker 4: guys don't win it all.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's early, early in the year for sure, So
- 1:31Speaker 3: I think just having having the ability to treat some
- 1:33Speaker 3: of the games, the exhibition games, getting a couple of
- 1:36Speaker 3: early spring training games is at least how I'm approaching it.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And I think it's it's kind of silly to sit
- 1:42Speaker 3: here and say that guys are going to be in
- 1:43Speaker 3: mid season form in March, but you know, it's just
- 1:47Speaker 3: kind of rising to the occasion, and these guys are
- 1:49Speaker 3: all all competitors. You know, a guy like Kershaw's pitch
- 1:53Speaker 3: you know how many years now and pitches so many
- 1:56Speaker 3: big games, so he's not scared of the big moments.
- 1:58Speaker 3: And you know, he wouldn't be signing up to come
- 2:01Speaker 3: to something like this if he didn't see himself as
- 2:03Speaker 3: being prepared for it.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So I don't think that's something to worry about at all.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yeah, Clayton Kershaw has never not just look at his
- 2:10Speaker 4: baseball reference, He's never not done it. So it'll be fine,
- 2:13Speaker 4: you said not mid season fourm So when you go
- 2:16Speaker 4: out there for your first exhibition game with Team USA,
- 2:20Speaker 4: I don't know who you guys will play, but it'll
- 2:22Speaker 4: be somebody out in Arizona. You guys are training Arizona,
- 2:24Speaker 4: right or Florida?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, Arizona.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Okay. And you are only topping out at ninety eight.
- 2:31Speaker 4: You're fine with that. You're like, I'm good. I know
- 2:33Speaker 4: I got one hundred and four, but I'm totally fine.
- 2:35Speaker 4: And then the first game you're facing Brazil, closing the
- 2:38Speaker 4: game out and it's still just ninety eight. You're fine
- 2:43Speaker 4: with that.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I don't know if the velocity is what I was
- 2:46Speaker 3: referring to. I think that'll be there. The adrenaline, it
- 2:49Speaker 3: will be good. Drenaline will be good. It's just about
- 2:52Speaker 3: harnessing it. And you know how polished are you going
- 2:54Speaker 3: to be in March? You know, for me, I'm throwing
- 2:57Speaker 3: indoors right now, so I'm gonna get some spikes in
- 2:59Speaker 3: the dirt here in a couple of weeks and you know,
- 3:02Speaker 3: let the thing get rolling a little bit.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But you know the way that you're feeling, at least.
- 3:06Speaker 3: For me, you know, I feel like I'm hitting my
- 3:08Speaker 3: stride in the summertime and coming down the stretch. And
- 3:12Speaker 3: that's not to say that you're not in a good
- 3:13Speaker 3: place coming into the year, but you know, just just
- 3:16Speaker 3: the different things you've worked on in the offseason, and
- 3:18Speaker 3: you know, trying to roll those out and compete at
- 3:21Speaker 3: the same time is sometimes a fine needle to thread.
- 3:25Speaker 3: But the lights come on, and you know we're competitors,
- 3:29Speaker 3: so you're gonna find a way regardless, even if it's
- 3:31Speaker 3: a spring training game. You know, you know, I have
- 3:33Speaker 3: a hard time going out there and just saying like
- 3:35Speaker 3: I don't care about the results. You know, I'm just
- 3:36Speaker 3: worried about feel. That's what some older guys have said.
- 3:39Speaker 3: But you know, anytime I get a guy in the box,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I'm competing.
- 3:42Speaker 4: So you're saying, adrenaline brings the best out in you,
- 3:46Speaker 4: crazy crazy stat to bring us because we saw you
- 3:50Speaker 4: in the playoffs. Is there any way to duplicate that?
- 3:53Speaker 4: Because we saw what you can bring in the playoffs
- 3:57Speaker 4: from not just velocity, everyone loves to see a hunt
- 4:00Speaker 4: and four fastest pitch of the year or whatever. But
- 4:03Speaker 4: just the location, the fact that you were pretty much
- 4:07Speaker 4: untouchable when you were spotting pitches. Does your adrenaline can
- 4:12Speaker 4: you can you figure out because you experienced the playoffs
- 4:15Speaker 4: last year, can you figure out a way to spike
- 4:18Speaker 4: that same adrenaline to get yourself that superpower and be
- 4:21Speaker 4: like you were in the playoffs the whole season.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Pitching in a bunch of different atmospheres over the course
- 4:28Speaker 3: of my career, I'm going to say, yes, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: I've pitched. I've pitched in stadiums where there has been
- 4:33Speaker 3: much anybody there, and I've pitched in stadiums where it's
- 4:36Speaker 3: buzzing from the first pitch to the last pitch. So
- 4:39Speaker 3: for me, like I said, as a competitor, you get
- 4:43Speaker 3: a guy in the box, whether it's ten am on
- 4:46Speaker 3: a backfield in spring training or you know, the wild
- 4:49Speaker 3: Card Series in Chicago, like I'm bringing my best either way,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and you know, maybe the adrenaline is is kind of
- 4:55Speaker 3: a you can't simulate it, you know, So those situations,
- 5:00Speaker 3: it's kind of how do you get yourself psyched out
- 5:02Speaker 3: and ready to go and a lot of times for me,
- 5:04Speaker 3: it's you know, the team and the other guy that's
- 5:06Speaker 3: in the box, you know, not not the hell loud,
- 5:08Speaker 3: the fans are cheering.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Talk about adrenaline rush, thoughts about maybe being a starter.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I mean, I know there was people talking about that,
- 5:16Speaker 5: maybe you coming in and from the first inning on.
- 5:19Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know what your your thoughts are
- 5:21Speaker 5: on that, what your feelings are where you're at right
- 5:24Speaker 5: now and you're pitching, but I don't know what do
- 5:26Speaker 5: you got on that that kind of thought process.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it seems like everybody's got a lot of thoughts.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I had my money on Kratz being the one to
- 5:34Speaker 3: bring it up. But yeah, it's an exciting It's an
- 5:39Speaker 3: exciting conversation. It's been had year in and year out
- 5:42Speaker 3: since you know, I did transition to the bullpen, and uh,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you know, I've had a lot of success and right
- 5:48Speaker 3: now to go away from that success doesn't make sense
- 5:50Speaker 3: for me. You know, my first year into the art system,
- 5:54Speaker 3: I'm being comped as a as a reliever and a
- 5:58Speaker 3: pretty good reliever at that. So I'm going to keep
- 6:01Speaker 3: that ball rolling right now, and that's I'm never going
- 6:03Speaker 3: to be the guy that rules it out down the line,
- 6:05Speaker 3: but that I will admit it is.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Hard to go away from something you're having a lot
- 6:08Speaker 2: of success with.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And you know, I think my value right now is
- 6:12Speaker 3: that being the lockdown guy in the ninth or late
- 6:16Speaker 3: in games whatever that we need to close a game
- 6:20Speaker 3: out and being a part of a really good bullpen,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and you know, something that I take pride into. And
- 6:26Speaker 3: you know, down the road maybe we'll see, but this
- 6:28Speaker 3: year we're looking at the bullpen.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I appreciate you thinking that I would ask that question,
- 6:32Speaker 4: but Todd is very valid and he's able to ask
- 6:34Speaker 4: that type of question. I'm just looking out for your cash, Mason.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I see it. I see it. But your manager was
- 6:41Speaker 4: on also an ex reliever, and he's exact quote was
- 6:46Speaker 4: he's the best in the entire world coming out of
- 6:48Speaker 4: the bullpen. So I want your reaction to your new
- 6:51Speaker 4: manager saying that, but I also want your your opinion
- 6:56Speaker 4: who is the best closer in the game right now?
- 7:00Speaker 3: Well, the reaction to Stay I'm saying that is awesome
- 7:03Speaker 3: to hear. We got to know him a little bit
- 7:05Speaker 3: these past couple of months, but I'm really looking forward
- 7:07Speaker 3: to not only building that relationship, with him this year,
- 7:10Speaker 3: but also just a full season with the guys, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and seeing seeing this thing through from opening day till
- 7:16Speaker 3: till whenever we played that last game, which which hopefully
- 7:19Speaker 3: is late late into the postseason. But yeah, best best
- 7:24Speaker 3: reliever for me looking through this year. Obviously I put
- 7:28Speaker 3: myself up there, but I'm never one to say that,
- 7:31Speaker 3: you know, I'm the best. I always think there's guys
- 7:32Speaker 3: that you're chasing and and things you're looking to emulate
- 7:35Speaker 3: from others. I thought Duran with the Phillies this year
- 7:38Speaker 3: was awesome. Chapman obviously had an incredible year, and he's
- 7:43Speaker 3: been doing that for so many years. But to do
- 7:45Speaker 3: it at the point of career that he's at and
- 7:49Speaker 3: you know, being the guy up there in Boston is
- 7:52Speaker 3: really fun to watch and it always has been since
- 7:54Speaker 3: I was a Pirates fan growing up watching him do
- 7:56Speaker 3: it against the Buckus.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So that's fair like that. And he's Jack and if
- 8:01Speaker 4: you didn't say Chappie, I'm pretty sure pretty much people
- 8:05Speaker 4: think he would kill you. So it's just he's a scary,
- 8:09Speaker 4: nice little teddy bear. Your manager is an ex reliever,
- 8:14Speaker 4: do you think that that's going to be an advantage
- 8:16Speaker 4: for you guys down in the pen. There's managers that
- 8:20Speaker 4: really know how to use their bullpen and really take
- 8:23Speaker 4: care of guys. But do you feel like that's an
- 8:25Speaker 4: advantage for a team like you guys who have on
- 8:29Speaker 4: paper right now, I think it's the best bullpen starting
- 8:32Speaker 4: the season, because I get it you lost to Robert Suarez,
- 8:35Speaker 4: but at the end of the year last year you
- 8:37Speaker 4: were the best bullpen in the game, and I feel
- 8:40Speaker 4: like you're starting out the season that way. So is
- 8:42Speaker 4: that an advantage to have Craig being an ex reliever?
- 8:49Speaker 3: Are doue imagine a way that it's not going to be?
- 8:51Speaker 3: You know, I think just the awareness that Rubin and
- 8:54Speaker 3: Fritz already bring from the pitching.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Side, and then you throw in the stand.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Also, you know, spent a lot of time down there,
- 9:02Speaker 3: knows the conversations we're having, knows how to read between
- 9:04Speaker 3: the lines of a guy saying like, yeah, I'm good
- 9:06Speaker 3: to go, or yeah I feel good, but you know
- 9:09Speaker 3: they've thrown back to back days or things like that.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I think Worke leg management has been the furthest thing
- 9:14Speaker 3: from my worry with with the Padres.
- 9:16Speaker 2: They've been very good about that. Since the day I
- 9:18Speaker 2: walked in the door.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But I think just matching up those situations and talking
- 9:23Speaker 3: to guys about where they find their success and hearing
- 9:27Speaker 3: it from the players, because I think that's something that's
- 9:29Speaker 3: important to the way the team's heading is you know
- 9:32Speaker 3: what players think, and you know, having those honest conversations
- 9:35Speaker 3: and not so many of those conversations where you know
- 9:38Speaker 3: it's kind of worried about somebody's feelings or anything like that.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I don't think anybody's worried about that.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You put it out there and you know, get your
- 9:45Speaker 3: opinion heard and you know it doesn't matter about being
- 9:49Speaker 3: right or wrong necessarily, But having a conversation and working
- 9:51Speaker 3: into to a mutual agreement I think is going to
- 9:53Speaker 3: be key.
- 9:55Speaker 4: As a guy who's not going into free agency, is
- 9:57Speaker 4: you know, you know where you're going, you have your
- 9:59Speaker 4: arbitrations off. Do you watch free agency? I got you know,
- 10:03Speaker 4: you can't watch. You can't do much outside, so it's
- 10:06Speaker 4: either video games or free agency in my mind, But
- 10:08Speaker 4: do you watch what happens in free agency? And what's
- 10:11Speaker 4: your what's the storyline that you're like, I'm really excited
- 10:15Speaker 4: to see this. Obviously anything padres, but I think the
- 10:18Speaker 4: Padres are probably done with the moves that they've made.
- 10:21Speaker 4: But do you watch it?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Of course? I mean I'm a baseball fan. Baseball player
- 10:27Speaker 3: player first, but fan second. I like to know what's
- 10:30Speaker 3: going on. And I think just as much as fans do,
- 10:33Speaker 3: you know, we're interested to see where guys end up
- 10:34Speaker 3: falling and having those conversations at the gym and amongst.
- 10:38Speaker 2: The guys you're working out with.
- 10:41Speaker 3: You know, I think it's fun to theorize and you know,
- 10:44Speaker 3: be surprised like everybody else when something happens, or say like, hey,
- 10:47Speaker 3: I predicted this months ago. But I always like following,
- 10:51Speaker 3: following the pitching markets of course, seeing where guys are headed,
- 10:54Speaker 3: seeing what's important to them. But yeah, like the big
- 10:57Speaker 3: ticket guys every year, it's always exciting to see where
- 10:59Speaker 3: they gonna end up falling.
- 11:02Speaker 5: My last question here from a fan, Neil Katz six.
- 11:05Speaker 5: He asked how much how much have you picked the
- 11:09Speaker 5: excuse me? How much have you talked to Trevor Hoffman
- 11:12Speaker 5: about closing? Have you picked his brain a lot at all?
- 11:15Speaker 5: You know, the big San Diego reliever.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we we spoke a little bit last year.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Actually before the trade even through through Katts's relationship with him.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Uh and you know, just.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Being able to lean on a guy like that a
- 11:28Speaker 3: little bit and think about some mentality stuff, which you
- 11:31Speaker 3: know sometimes is just you know, turning the page. That
- 11:35Speaker 3: was the biggest conversation we had was how do you
- 11:37Speaker 3: turn the page from a bad one and go back
- 11:39Speaker 3: out there the next night to get the job done.
- 11:42Speaker 3: So I'm always excited and eager to pick guy's brains,
- 11:47Speaker 3: especially you know grades like that.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Mason question for you.
- 11:54Speaker 1: The way the season ended for the Padres obviously wasn't
- 11:57Speaker 1: a title, so you know, this is a team that
- 11:59Speaker 1: has high xpectations you'd fan based the whole deal, right,
- 12:02Speaker 1: You've been able to get a taste of this. They
- 12:04Speaker 1: were bounced by the Cubs. There were definitely some controversial
- 12:08Speaker 1: calls umpire wise, it's leading to pushing forward. How excited
- 12:13Speaker 1: do you think the team will be that they'll have
- 12:16Speaker 1: the ability to challenge missed calls coming up this season?
- 12:21Speaker 3: I'm extremely interested to see how it goes. I mean,
- 12:23Speaker 3: we've had a little bit of experience in the minor
- 12:25Speaker 3: leagues are on a rehab assignment, but seeing it.
- 12:28Speaker 2: At the big league level, I think will be really
- 12:29Speaker 2: really interesting.
- 12:31Speaker 3: You know, as a closer, I'm kind of hoping the
- 12:33Speaker 3: other team burns up all their challenges before they get
- 12:36Speaker 3: to me, because I can already see the game ends,
- 12:39Speaker 3: and you know it's they got one challenge left, and
- 12:42Speaker 3: it's like, well, we're just going to challenge it just
- 12:43Speaker 3: because we have it.
- 12:45Speaker 2: But we'll see.
- 12:46Speaker 3: I think it'll be something something, really. I guess different
- 12:51Speaker 3: teams will manage it different ways, so you know, if
- 12:53Speaker 3: there's guys that aren't allowed the challenge or guys that
- 12:57Speaker 3: are allowed to challenge, you know, how does that get
- 12:59Speaker 3: filtered out? As a pitcher, I'm always just gonna rely
- 13:02Speaker 3: on the catcher because I'm gonna get too emotional with it.
- 13:04Speaker 2: So I don't think you'll see me challenge a single
- 13:06Speaker 2: pitch all year. That's fair.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I like that you talked about ending the games the
- 13:11Speaker 4: game's over. Are you gonna or have you thought about
- 13:15Speaker 4: having a different walkout song music? Because now you're in
- 13:18Speaker 4: a different city, you have, you know, kind of a
- 13:21Speaker 4: starting a new chapter. I obviously played for the Padres
- 13:24Speaker 4: last year, but if you're the closer, if you're designated
- 13:28Speaker 4: the closer, I'm not sure what they're gonna do with that?
- 13:32Speaker 4: Do you do you try to change your walkout music?
- 13:36Speaker 3: Potentially there there's been conversations and you know, I guess
- 13:39Speaker 3: I'll put you guys in the same boat as everybody else.
- 13:41Speaker 3: We'll find out when I come out of the bullpen
- 13:44Speaker 3: from my first selling this year.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Is it a tough decision? Is it tough to side
- 13:49Speaker 4: between do you have? I mean if you narrowed it
- 13:51Speaker 4: down to like because some guys are like, ah, man,
- 13:53Speaker 4: I got four songs I'm really loving with Meek Mill's
- 13:56Speaker 4: putting now, with Drake's putting now, like what Breaking Benjamin's putting?
- 13:59Speaker 2: It?
- 13:59Speaker 4: Like, can you give us a genre? And is it
- 14:03Speaker 4: down to like two songs?
- 14:05Speaker 3: It's definitely down to a few songs, but kind of
- 14:08Speaker 3: encapsulating that energy coming out and then you know, obviously
- 14:13Speaker 3: with an electric stadium and fan base, you kind of
- 14:16Speaker 3: see how they respond to it. Nickelback seem to be
- 14:19Speaker 3: so so last year. So I think we're gonna go
- 14:22Speaker 3: different round.
- 14:25Speaker 5: And I'm gonna finish with this. I want to go
- 14:27Speaker 5: back to comedy. So you said you're gonna take the
- 14:29Speaker 5: You're too emotional, You're not gonna challenge any of the pitches.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So I have a hard time believe in that three
- 14:37Speaker 5: two count. You gotta run around. You're up one a
- 14:40Speaker 5: pitch that could end the game. You're not gonna go
- 14:43Speaker 5: crazy and go hold on, hold on, I gotta I'm
- 14:46Speaker 5: calling I'm calling bullshit. I'm just being I know it's
- 14:51Speaker 5: gonna happen one or two times and you're gonna scream
- 14:53Speaker 5: your head off.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I just I'm taking I'm taking this move, this moves
- 14:59Speaker 3: out out of these, I might go, I might go
- 15:02Speaker 3: palms up or something, but yeah, I got my My
- 15:06Speaker 3: entire trust is in Freddie back there and decisions he's
- 15:10Speaker 3: gonna make.
- 15:10Speaker 2: He's seeing it. You know.
- 15:12Speaker 3: If we get to a point of the year and
- 15:14Speaker 3: he tells me, like, I want you to challenge one
- 15:17Speaker 3: just to just to try it, I mean, I guess
- 15:19Speaker 3: it's the same situation I said about the hitters. If
- 15:21Speaker 3: we're at the end of the game and we have
- 15:22Speaker 3: a couple left, you may as well use them.
- 15:23Speaker 4: But uh, you know, go ahead one and a half.
- 15:27Speaker 5: I'm calling the over. You're gonna do it more than
- 15:29Speaker 5: one and a half.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Time put over under and a half.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, right, if Freddy convinced it, because really
- 15:41Speaker 1: the thing is, I mean, Mason, you could go like
- 15:43Speaker 1: this like whoa, and then Freddy's reading you, Freddie forming
- 15:46Speaker 1: your catcher here for the Padres coming up this season,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and then be like, all right, I got your back.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I'm doing it.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Maybe, I think fred Freddie will if I throw my
