- 0:09thank you Megan
- 0:10I'm here with my pink ice cream cone toy named Pinky
- 0:17oh I love it
- 0:19alright tell us about
- 0:21first of all it's National Ice Cream Day on the 20th
- 0:23so we thought
- 0:24this was a great time to check back in with Sharlene
- 0:26and see what she's got going on
- 0:28so tell us a little bit about your journey
- 0:30and where the pink ice cream comes in
- 0:33okay so first of all
- 0:35I'm celebrating 10 years out from having
- 0:38been diagnosed with ocular melanoma congratulations
- 0:42in April 2015 I was diagnosed to the shock of my life
- 0:47didn't know something I could get
- 0:49and I had a proton beam radiation up at Davis
- 0:52California and um
- 0:54since then I've been monitored and
- 0:57and I have the good fortune that so far
- 0:59do not have any metastases
- 1:00and I can see pretty well
- 1:02um the story about ice cream
- 1:05I wanna talk to you about my mother
- 1:07my mother Edna Carlson
- 1:09and um
- 1:10she was a tough Swede and I should say Yay Sweden
- 1:16um anyway
- 1:17we grew up in the
- 1:18I grew up in the Midwest and my mom lived to be 103
- 1:22she just knew how to survive
- 1:25and so when she was 100
- 1:28shortly after her hundredth birthday
- 1:29um two doctors called me and told me she would
- 1:31be dead in 48 hours
- 1:33because she had had a perforated ulcer
- 1:35so of course
- 1:36I put her on hospice rushed back to Moline
- 1:38Illinois and um
- 1:40you know prepare for her funeral
- 1:42except she didn't die when she woke up
- 1:46the doctors you know she
- 1:47a couple days later they
- 1:49they she woke up and
- 1:51and nobody could explain why
- 1:54and I asked her if she wanted something to eat
- 1:56cause she'd not had anything for a while
- 1:58and she said I want some pink ice cream
- 2:00cause she loved strawberry ice cream
- 2:02and um
- 2:03the DOC said well
- 2:05she'll probably die within a few weeks
- 2:06something will happen it'll burst open
- 2:08she flunked out of hospice six months later
- 2:10and lived for three years
- 2:13so the you know
- 2:14and every day we gave her pink ice cream
- 2:16so this was kind of this joke
- 2:18but when I got um
- 2:20diagnosed with my cancer I'm like
- 2:23how do I kick into survival skills and stay positive
- 2:27so I started eating pink ice cream
- 2:30it's like it works for my mom
- 2:31it's gotta work for me I get a pink ice cream toy
- 2:34of course you know this
- 2:35as I said this is pinky
- 2:37and the other thing I realized it's
- 2:39it's my resilience color
- 2:41so I put a pink streak in the side of my hair
- 2:45some people have wondered if I'm trying to be Barbie
- 2:47but no I'm just trying to stay alive and be fabulous
- 2:51so it's kind of like um
- 2:53it's my way of
- 2:54I figured it's a genetic resilience color
- 2:57they kept my mother alive
- 2:58when she was supposed to be dead
- 2:59so I think
- 3:00it has something to do with why I'm still alive
- 3:0310 years after diagnosis
- 3:05oh and we're so glad you are
- 3:07that's an amazing story I love that
- 3:09you know
- 3:10all these crazy diets we try to do to be healthy
- 3:12and she's like I just want pink ice cream
- 3:14like that's amazing
- 3:16I mean she wasn't a heavy person
- 3:18but she just you know
- 3:19sort of like my grandma used to say
- 3:21a little of what you like does you good
- 3:23you know what I mean it's sort of that
- 3:24so

- 3:47I eat pink and it's just
- 3:48so far it's been working for me
- 3:50and on National Ice Cream Day
- 3:52it seems like a good time to celebrate that and say hey
- 3:55pick a color that's your favorite color
- 3:57that's maybe a resilience color for you
- 3:59put it in your hair or put it in your mouth
- 4:02one way or another oh
- 4:03I love it I love it
- 4:05and I love that it can be pink
- 4:06it doesn't have to be blue
- 4:07it doesn't have to be anything
- 4:08be whatever you want whatever it works for you
- 4:10yeah that's amazing
- 4:12so how are you doing now you said you're 10 years out
- 4:15how are you feeling
- 4:16are you doing any kind of treatments
- 4:18what are you up to
- 4:19well I
- 4:20I just had my 77th birthday
- 4:22and I'm still walking this earth
- 4:24so that's something to celebrate
- 4:26I have the good fortune of being treated by
- 4:29Dr. Prithvi Mruthyunjaya at Stanford who follows me
- 4:34he didn't do my initial treatment
- 4:35but he follows me and I have retinopathy in my eye
- 4:39I have some um
- 4:41vision losses and I had swollen retina
- 4:44um it distorts your vision
- 4:45so I I see him every um
- 4:48uh now it's about every 6 weeks
- 4:50and I actually get a
- 4:51a shot in my eye to preserve vision
- 4:54so I'm I'm being monitored all the time
- 4:56you know
- 4:57annually I get scans to see if there are metastases and
- 5:00and uh
- 5:01you know my vision is better
- 5:02my my joke was always well
- 5:04if I have if I have um
- 5:06you know distorted vision
- 5:07I'm okay with that if it makes my boobs look bigger
- 5:10and my butt look smaller but that wasn't the case
- 5:13and so I get the eye shots
- 5:15and get to hang out with Doctor Mruthyunjaya
- 5:17once in a while and he's lovely
- 5:19I mean you know
- 5:21not that it's something you want to do
- 5:23but if you have to do at least
- 5:24you get somebody like him to hang out with
- 5:26for a little bit yeah
- 5:28he is yeah
- 5:29we love him
- 5:31alright and you just went to the Palo Alto 5K
- 5:33how was that tell us about your sign
- 5:35I did I went to Palo Alto just had its race
- 5:38a 5K race that was race for a cure
- 5:41and we had I think
- 5:42the largest number of people
- 5:43attending this Palo Alto race
- 5:45and it was a lot of fun and I kind of disrupted by um
- 5:49carrying a sign that said
- 5:51run if you think I am hot with an eye in it
- 5:53but I had a lot of fun so wherever I go
- 5:55I try to you know
- 5:57bring a little joy when I can
- 5:59oh I love it so much
- 6:01and your sign was amazing
- 6:02I wish everybody had the kind of like energy
- 6:05and I say that about myself too
- 6:06I wish I had your energy too
- 6:08like oh
- 6:08what a fun world we'd have
- 6:11yeah I mean it's I you
- 6:12you do what you can you know
- 6:13I mean I
- 6:14I just I try to stay positive and stay alive
- 6:17and I think
- 6:18I think the combination of eating pink ice cream
- 6:21and keeping you know
- 6:22believing that you are a survivor
- 6:24and that's why every morning
- 6:26when I get up and look in the mirror
- 6:27and I look at my hair I know I'm a survivor and that's
- 6:31that keeps me going
- 6:33very important and I do a lot of
- 6:35of you know
- 6:35I raised
- 6:36I have helped with various fundraising efforts for A Cure
- 6:38In Sight my favorite organization
- 6:40a wonderful non profit that has um
- 6:43you know does a lot for fun
- 6:45funding research and and funding patients
- 6:48who need help to get to appointments
- 6:50this disease is is not an easy disease to have because
- 6:54you know I'm
- 6:54I'm fortunate now
- 6:55because I live in an area where my doctor is nearby
- 6:58but that is certainly not the truth
- 6:59not the case for everyone
- 7:01so um
- 7:03you know
- 7:03I try to give where I can to help those who are
- 7:06or in have a much more difficult time
- 7:09accessing treatment than I do
- 7:11absolutely
- 7:12and we very much appreciate everything that you do
- 7:14and all of your support
- 7:46so for anyone who's maybe recently diagnosed
- 7:49and they're just finding this podcast
- 7:51do you have any words of wisdom
- 7:53I mean you've already given some
- 7:54but is there anything else that you'd want to leave on
- 7:56before we wrap up a final message
- 7:59I think I would say um
- 8:01you know this is one of the it's
- 8:03it's
- 8:03one of the most bizarre experiences I've had in life
- 8:06because you know
- 8:06I didn't even realize I could have this happen to me
- 8:09and you know you it
- 8:11I've had to learn to stay positive
- 8:15to figure out how to manage my own care
- 8:16and make sure people are talking to each other
- 8:18when they need to so it's complex when you
- 8:20when you have a rare disease um
- 8:22but just stay positive stay on top of it
- 8:25never give up look for what our options are out there
- 8:28and of course
