- 0:02Welcome yet again everybody to Coach's
- 0:04Corner on the Auburn Undercover podcast.
- 0:06I'm your co-host Ronnie Sanders and I'm
- 0:08joined today as always by former Auburn
- 0:10defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.
- 0:12Ellis, good to be with you.
- 0:14>> Good to be here. I didn't know if I was
- 0:16going to be able to get up this morning
- 0:17after that game last night.
- 0:20>> What were your thoughts,
- 0:22>> Rody? [snorts] We I mean this this stuff
- 0:24is really gonna sink in one day. You're
- 0:27not going to ever see this in our
- 0:28lifetime. And of course, I won't live
- 0:30long enough to see another shutout as
- 0:32old as I am, but you'll never see this
- 0:35for again in your lifetime. I mean, what
- 0:37Indiana has done and with what they did
- 0:40it with,
- 0:42>> I mean, I just think it's phenomenal. I
- 0:44I found myself pulling for them and I
- 0:45mean, I didn't care who won the game,
- 0:47frankly, but uh you just sitting there
- 0:50looking at saying, you know, they they
- 0:51got no business winning this game, but
- 0:53they they gonna win it. Uh I think uh
- 0:56some of the bad part of it was more
- 0:59about Miami not doing the things you got
- 1:02to do to win a championship. The second
- 1:05week in a row they've had bad penalties.
- 1:07Now a week ago against or not a week ago
- 1:11previous round against Old Miss they
- 1:14they had a lot of penalties. I think
- 1:16they had 10 that were enforced. They
- 1:18could have declined some of them. Could
- 1:20have had even more than that for all I
- 1:21know. There weren't as many this time
- 1:23and the yardage weren't all that bad
- 1:25when you look at the stat sheet, but
- 1:26boy, two of them were just critical. You
- 1:29know, they the one way got the face
- 1:31mask, it's third and two in and two
- 1:33miles
- 1:34>> and you get a face mask after a five
- 1:36yard gain or something like that
- 1:38>> and so it's automatic first down and
- 1:41that I think may have been the winning
- 1:43drive on that one. And there was another
- 1:45call on that same possum that same
- 1:48drive, but it was just two critical
- 1:49third down penalties just not very
- 1:52smart. And then uh you know penalties,
- 1:55the third down penalties especially and
- 1:58you know third down was just terrible.
- 2:01You know they were 0 for first half and
- 2:04got into you know got behind the chains
- 2:06and everything and then second half you
- 2:08know they got a little better but I
- 2:09finished they finished what three of 11.
- 2:12I it's it's hard to win a championship
- 2:14game when you do that. And then, of
- 2:16course, they only threw one pick, but he
- 2:18threw it at a a critical time. So, a lot
- 2:21of their bad plays were just at times
- 2:24where it was just a back breaker. Now,
- 2:26on the other hand, uh Indiana didn't
- 2:29have a turnover and they didn't have one
- 2:31in the whole playoff.
- 2:33Just think about that.
- 2:34>> I read I think I read that they hadn't
- 2:36had a playoff in I mean, I'm sorry. They
- 2:38I don't think they've had a turnover in
- 2:3915 games. I think that's what I read
- 2:41yesterday. 15 games.
- 2:42>> I think that's what he said. I think I
- 2:44don't think I think he said he hadn't
- 2:45had an interception in it was a
- 2:47quarterback. I guess I think I read he
- 2:49hadn't had an interception since since
- 2:50the first game of the season. I believe
- 2:51that's what I read.
- 2:53>> Gez, basketball.
- 2:54>> Maybe I'm wrong. Don't quote me on that,
- 2:56but I think that's I think that's what I
- 2:57read yesterday.
- 2:58>> But you look at overall statistical
- 3:00performance now. I've never seen a team
- 3:02struggle at the line of scrimmage
- 3:05constantly throughout the game and still
- 3:07win a game like that. And of course they
- 3:09had the block punt. Block punt was huge.
- 3:12>> That was I thought that was a
- 3:13difference. Well, it was a difference in
- 3:14the game.
- 3:15>> No doubt.
- 3:16>> Six-point game. I mean that you know
- 3:18people people talk about you know that
- 3:20that's a special teams plays
- 3:23momentum. Never mind never mind the
- 3:25seven points. It's just takes the air
- 3:27out of you.
- 3:28>> Oh that was a crusher. And especially
- 3:30when it brings points not just field
- 3:33position but it got points too. Uh, so
- 3:36I, you know, it was it was a really when
- 3:39you look at it, it wasn't that great of
- 3:41a football game as far as the execution
- 3:43and everything by each team, but when
- 3:45you look at what Indiana did and the way
- 3:47they win games and so forth. I mean, if
- 3:50you're a professional better, you might
- 3:52not give a crap. If you're a lady who
- 3:54only watch likes to watch halftime
- 3:56shows, you might not give a crap. If
- 3:59you're a coach [clears throat and cough]
- 4:01and you can't appreciate what Indiana's
- 4:03done with that bunch they got, you must
- 4:06be crazy. I mean, it's just something as
- 4:08a football coach when I watch them, it's
- 4:11I admire it. They're winning off of
- 4:14discipline, technique, fundamentals, and
- 4:17just smart football.
- 4:20And of course, that's what coaches
- 4:22always think they can coach. You know,
- 4:24we know we can't coach speed. We know we
- 4:26can't get the best quarterback all the
- 4:28time. you you know we don't know with
- 4:30talent we need talent more than we want
- 4:32to admit because we think we can out
- 4:35coach people and you can't and that's
- 4:37why I thought this is so impressive
- 4:39because it damn sure did out coach
- 4:40people.
- 4:42>> Yeah. I mean I you and if you look at
- 4:45it's it's amazing. I mean, the the the
- 4:47[clears throat] lack of stars on the
- 4:49roster, the uh I mean, the fact that he
- 4:52brought those he brought 10 10 I I'm
- 4:54sorry, 12 or 13 guys with him from from
- 4:56JMU, won 11 games last year and turns
- 4:59around winning a national championship
- 5:00this year to Indiana. And I you I know
- 5:02we're doing an Auburn show. Um but that
- 5:05should that this in this day and age of
- 5:07college football, people are all, you
- 5:09know, they're they're they're clutching
- 5:10pearls because, you know, Cam Coleman
- 5:12left and Duce Knight left. Well, and and
- 5:14all that's true, but you won five games
- 5:16last year. So, I mean, you know what?
- 5:20Uh, you know, it's not working. Um, so I
- 5:25think Auburn's trying to figure out a
- 5:26way to make it work. It's really, it is
- 5:29a different world in college football
- 5:30when you've got Indiana winning a
- 5:32national championship and Old Miss in
- 5:34the playoff and Florida and Auburn can't
- 5:36get out of their own damn way. I mean,
- 5:37it's just [laughter]
- 5:39>> it is it is amazing in some ways. I
- 5:41heard I think it was uh one of the
- 5:44talking heads yesterday on ESPN and he
- 5:46he said uh something about the Blue
- 5:50Bloodoods are back and on his halftime
- 5:53comments. I said, "Dude, what games have
- 5:54you been watching? The Blue Bloods are
- 5:56over there somewhere watching the TV
- 5:59>> in their dorm room or or in their
- 6:01apartment. They they ain't here. And
- 6:03even in even Miami, I mean, their days
- 6:06long gone. They back away, you know. So,
- 6:09their heydays are long gone, but uh you
- 6:13know, we still know recruiting's
- 6:15important. We know that portal's
- 6:17important. We know that talent's
- 6:19important. I mean, that's we're not
- 6:20trying to say that. But, you know, when
- 6:24you're a good football team, it's
- 6:25there's a lot of things that are more
- 6:27important than just the talent because
- 6:29when you get on that level, everybody's
- 6:32got some, you know, everybody's got some
- 6:34talent. You can't just out just get so
- 6:38far away from people in your talent
- 6:40level that you can play donkey ball and
- 6:42still win. You got to be tested. You got
- 6:45to, you know, do things the right way.
- 6:48Well, I think another thing is, you
- 6:50know, the the athletic director, Scott
- 6:52Doulson,
- 6:53I mean, to go out and and take a chance
- 6:56on Signetti, who at the time was 62
- 6:58years old, you know, you got guys, you
- 7:00got guys that that are getting jobs at
- 7:0236, 34, you know, and and go hire a guy
- 7:05who's 62 years old,
- 7:07>> and everybody else, you know, everybody,
- 7:09all these saping assistants getting
- 7:11jobs, nobody took a chance on him. Um,
- 7:15pretty pretty phenomenal. Pretty
- 7:17phenomenal. the age factor, but if you
- 7:19look at his track record, I mean, he won
- 7:20at IUP,
- 7:22>> he won at Elon, I'm pretty familiar with
- 7:24that school, and he won at JMU.
- 7:27>> And I can't remember if he was there
- 7:28when they made the move from 1A to 1A. I
- 7:32think he got there right after. I don't
- 7:33know. But, uh, a lot of people have won
- 7:36at JMU. So, I I don't think that's his
- 7:39most impressive stop, frankly. Uh, you
- 7:41know, guy just got a job out of there
- 7:43this year. So, there are a lot of guys
- 7:45that have won big there. Mickey kind of
- 7:47started it way back and they've been
- 7:50good for 30 years and and even on both
- 7:53levels, but nobody's ever done it in
- 7:55Indiana consistently.
- 7:57>> No, it's just unbelievable. And uh to do
- 8:00it where he did it and to do it with who
- 8:02he did it and to do it, you know, the
- 8:04way they do it, I it's just I can't quit
- 8:06talking about it.
- 8:08>> Well, I I agree with you. I'm looking
- 8:09up, you know, I've got signetti pulled
- 8:11up here. I mean his his track record as
- 8:13a head coach I mean he was at IUP for 1
- 8:162 3 7 years won 7 12 9 6 9 10. Um Elon 8
- 8:23and four 6 and five and then James
- 8:25Madison won 14 7 12 8 and 11 and then
- 8:29two years in Indiana won 11 and 16. I
- 8:32mean, yeah, I can coach.
- 8:34>> Yep.
- 8:34>> I mean, you know,
- 8:35>> that's phenomenal. And another thing
- 8:36about, you know, a lot of those
- 8:38assistant coaches, he picked up a couple
- 8:40of them at Elon. One of them's been with
- 8:42him ever since IUP, I think. So, and
- 8:44they do a heck of a job. The Shadowan, I
- 8:48assumed he was grandson or something of
- 8:50Mike Shanahan or,
- 8:52>> you know, I'm not sure.
- 8:52>> He's not must not be related. I've never
- 8:54seen it mentioned anywhere on TV nor in
- 8:58articles or anything. Whenever they say
- 9:00his name, they don't mention that he's a
- 9:02nephew or grandson. So, I'm assuming
- 9:04he's not related to them.
- 9:06>> Yeah. I I I when I first saw his name, I
- 9:08thought the same thing, but I haven't
- 9:09been able to find any link. Of course,
- 9:10that doesn't mean there's not one, but I
- 9:12I don't I think there I think it's two
- 9:14different Shanahans.
- 9:15>> Yeah. Well, the portal, I think in the
- 9:18age of the portal, you're not going to
- 9:19see anything like this again. And uh I
- 9:22tell you like my I don't know if you
- 9:24heard but you know Clemson Davo has
- 9:26tried to stay away from the portal as
- 9:27much as he can and not build the program
- 9:30on it. Now the last two years he started
- 9:33taking some two or three and filling in
- 9:36some spots. This year they took more
- 9:38than they have. Okay. And there's some
- 9:41lessons to be learned about this. I
- 9:43don't think you can survive anymore
- 9:45unless you use the portal unless college
- 9:47football changes again. But I think that
- 9:51you better have a good structure in
- 9:52place and you better evaluate the people
- 9:54you get out of the portal as well as you
- 9:57try to evaluate these 17 year olds
- 9:58you're recruiting out of high school
- 10:01[clears throat] because they got a kid
- 10:03from I think either Stanford or Cal and
- 10:06uh linebacker and he was here about four
- 10:08or five days and somebody was tampering
- 10:11with him and he just took off to Old
- 10:13Miss got a bunch of money and what
- 10:16they're saying he got for a linebacker
- 10:18it was Unbelievable.
- 10:20There was millions as a linebacker. So
- 10:24anyhow, my son's on the team. I had not
- 10:27heard about it. That's how out of touch
- 10:28I am. And it happened during this past
- 10:30week. And he just left Friday right
- 10:33before the portal shut. And I asked my
- 10:36son, said, "Charl, did you know about
- 10:37that?" He said, "Yes, sir. I was I was
- 10:39eating breakfast with him the other day,
- 10:41and he was telling me that some guys
- 10:43were were uh tampering with him, and he
- 10:46seemed like it was irritating him." He
- 10:48said he was gone that night, Dad.
- 10:50[laughter]
- 10:52I said, 'Why didn't you tell me about
- 10:53it? He said, 'I don't know. I didn't I
- 10:55didn't think you care.
- 10:57>> That's that's the world we live in.
- 10:59>> But that's how bad it is, Ronnie. And
- 11:00this is a guy, you know, this was a
- 11:02program that hadn't been bringing in 35
- 11:05a year. Okay. So, you're going to get
- 11:07some bad apples. You start bringing 35 a
- 11:09year. I mean, I think they were up to
- 11:11about six or seven this year. I assume
- 11:14they're doing the homework on them, but
- 11:15it's just it's crazy. I I I you can't
- 11:18blame the kid when he's put in that
- 11:20situation.
- 11:21>> What are you going to do? Turn it down.
- 11:23>> I bet none of us would. But if they
- 11:26don't get some kind of structure on this
- 11:28thing, it's not going to last. I just
- 11:30don't see it.
- 11:31>> Well, but I saw an interview with with
- 11:32Charles Barker uh this morning, actually
- 11:34posted on our message board, and he
- 11:36said, "Look," he said, "This model is
- 11:38not sustainable." He said, "I've given a
- 11:40lot of money to Auburn." And he said,
- 11:42"I'm going to continue to give a lot of
- 11:43money to Auburn." He said, "But I'm not
- 11:46giving millions of dollars to pay
- 11:47players every year." He said, ' It's not
- 11:49a sustainable model.' He said, 'You
- 11:51know, I grew up poor and I don't have
- 11:54any interest in going back. He
- 11:56[laughter]
- 11:58So, you know, he said, I'm I'm not going
- 12:01to give money to pay players every year.
- 12:04It's just not sustainable. And he, you
- 12:05know, I think he's right.
- 12:07>> No question. I don't think there's any
- 12:08doubt. And you go you're gonna see a one
- 12:11team jump up and booster gets hot, got a
- 12:13bunch of money, wants to get out of his
- 12:14pockets and they knock it out for two or
- 12:17three years, but like it's not going to
- 12:19sustain itself. And uh I'm really
- 12:22concerned. You said we'd move into some
- 12:23of the other things about the playoff
- 12:25structure. But telling you now, the Big
- 12:2710 to me is pushing things around
- 12:31legally now the way they used to just
- 12:33money everybody back in the 60s and the
- 12:3550s and they're trying to take over
- 12:37college football again. And I I just
- 12:40believe that. And back then, the most
- 12:42wealthy entity in college sports at that
- 12:45time, believe it or not, was the damn
- 12:47Rose Bowl. And that's where all the big
- 12:49money was. And who owned it? Pack in the
- 12:51Big 10. And you know, they had it took
- 12:54them 10 years after beginning the
- 12:56playoffs to keep the Rose Bowl from
- 12:57complaining that they don't have the
- 12:59right game and all that kind of thing.
- 13:01Finally, they realize now they don't
- 13:02mean anything anymore. Just like these
- 13:04basketball coaches are starting to
- 13:05realize they're they need to just sit
- 13:07down over there and watch until they get
- 13:09their money from the football program.
- 13:11That's what happened to the ACC. They
- 13:13learned too late. You can't run it off
- 13:15of basketball.
- 13:16>> Yeah. Well, that that's a pretty good
- 13:18segue into into uh you know Big 10 SEC.
- 13:22I mean that [clears throat] they're
- 13:23still deadlocked on the playoff format.
- 13:25I mean you've got 12 now. Uh, sounds
- 13:29like both conferences want to move to
- 13:3116, but [clears throat and cough] after
- 13:33three years, the Big 10 wants to go to
- 13:3524 and drop the championship games. And
- 13:37I I don't maybe I'm wrong. I don't see
- 13:39the SEC doing unless the money is just
- 13:41so prohibitive that they feel like they
- 13:43don't have a choice. But, I mean,
- 13:45winning the SEC still means something.
- 13:47I'm not sure. I don't know how much
- 13:49maybe maybe winning the Big 10 doesn't,
- 13:51but winning the SEC means something.
- 13:53Now, I'm for having playin games. Like I
- 13:55I don't think that you ought to be
- 13:57necessarily punished for losing the
- 14:00conference championship game, but maybe
- 14:02it's a playin game. I I don't know, but
- 14:04I think you got to have other games that
- 14:05weekend where um
- 14:08you know, if you're sitting at home, you
- 14:11shouldn't you shouldn't get an off week,
- 14:13but for losing,
- 14:15I know. Well, if you look at this this
- 14:17year, and the reason I want 16 or go
- 14:20back to eight, I don't like the buy. And
- 14:24I would really kind of have to correct
- 14:27myself because coming into it when I saw
- 14:29the brackets, I thought, boy, these guys
- 14:32has got to buy. They got a huge
- 14:34advantage. Four games in a row you got
- 14:36to win to get that trophy. These college
- 14:39kids can't take that grind. But I didn't
- 14:41really look at the space in between each
- 14:43round and especially between the first
- 14:45round and the second round. There's a
- 14:47lot of time and there was a lot of time
- 14:49before the playoffs even began.
- 14:52[cough and clears throat]
- 14:52So the buy, if you go back and think
- 14:55now, Indiana's the only one that
- 14:57survived that had a buy. The rest of
- 14:59them got beat. So the buy really hadn't
- 15:01meant much to the team that has it. And
- 15:04I looked at those home games that first
- 15:06round and I tell you, man, to get a home
- 15:10game on your campus, you know, as a
- 15:11playoff game, that's a big deal with
- 15:14fans, I think. I don't like the fact
- 15:16they're trying to push out the
- 15:18championship games. I agree with you
- 15:20100% on that. You SEC was out front on
- 15:23that, as you well know. we played in the
- 15:25first one, first two and Roy Kramer, you
- 15:29know, the way he's had the vision and
- 15:31all of that and they just don't want to
- 15:32let go of it. I'm not sure it's not
- 15:35going to be sort of like this portal and
- 15:36NIL stuff. I mean, if it if it just
- 15:38keeps pushing and pushing, that's not
- 15:41going to be something they're going to
- 15:43be able to, you know, get anybody else
- 15:44to argue with them about. They're going
- 15:46to say, "Hell, we don't care. You know,
- 15:47y'all are making all the money off of
- 15:49it. We ain't getting any of it." And so,
- 15:51I don't know where it's going either.
- 15:53And I think Sanki got rolled by Patini
- 15:55on one of the things early about going
- 15:58to nine games. I wanted the SEC to play
- 16:00nine games because I just thought there
- 16:02was some meaningless games on a lot of
- 16:04their schedules
- 16:05>> and it looked like to me the weaker
- 16:07teams in the conference were the ones
- 16:08that were fighting and I thought, you
- 16:10know, if you don't want to play in the
- 16:11conference, get out. But now I'm looking
- 16:14at it and uh Pete Cordelli is on one of
- 16:18our podcast. Pete, you know, coach for
- 16:20Hulks. They won the national
- 16:21championship at Notre Dame. He's coached
- 16:23a bunch of different places with coach
- 16:24Holtz and everywhere. He was saying the
- 16:27other day that if you got as many teams
- 16:30as the Big 10 has now, you need to play
- 16:32nine games.
- 16:34>> You might not ever see any of them dudes
- 16:36for five years if you don't play nine
- 16:37games.
- 16:38>> Well, doesn't have that many schools.
- 16:40They don't need to be playing nine
- 16:42games. And I thought, you know, you're
- 16:43right. They don't.
- 16:44>> Not
- 16:46you got 16 versus 20. [clears throat]
- 16:48And of those 20 in the Big 10, you've
- 16:50got five what would be considered
- 16:52premier programs. You know, uh Michigan,
- 16:55Ohio State, Penn State, USC,
- 16:57[clears throat]
- 16:57throw in Oregon if you want to. That's
- 16:59it.
- 17:00>> In the in the you've got nine.
- 17:04>> I mean, you got the traditional the
- 17:06traditional big six plus, Texas A&M, and
- 17:08Oklahoma. I mean, but playing playing
- 17:11eight in the SEC versus lining up in the
- 17:13Big 10 playing Maryland and Ruckers and
- 17:16UCLA and
- 17:19>> you know, you can get
- 17:21>> they better stand the ground on this
- 17:23playoff thing because unless there's
- 17:25something I haven't seen about the money
- 17:27on it that will make it a no-brainer,
- 17:30if they let the Big 10 push them into
- 17:32nine games as they already have and then
- 17:35they let them push them into the 20some
- 17:36in the playoffs, I just telling you now
- 17:39they're trying to take the whole thing
- 17:40back over like they did when I was a
- 17:42kid. Okay, you ain't you're not that
- 17:44old. You didn't see it. I watched it as
- 17:46a kid. You know, you're at that age
- 17:48where you first kind of realize you're
- 17:50into sports as a little boy and you
- 17:52watching that stuff and you and I
- 17:54remember one time going over one of my
- 17:56kid friends houses, you know, both our
- 17:58dads went to Clemson. We were Clemson
- 18:00fans and all that good stuff. And Mr.
- 18:02Jim sitting there watching Washington
- 18:04and Wisconsin on TV
- 18:07and we I was like, "Mr. Praise, why are
- 18:09you watching them?" He said, "Well,
- 18:10that's the only ones on."
- 18:12You know, is that where we're going
- 18:15back? I don't know. But, uh, you know,
- 18:18it's just I think that they need to I
- 18:21don't like buys, so I hope they can get
- 18:24to 16, but to get to 16, if they've got
- 18:27to agree that two years later, we're
- 18:29going to what? 20 what?
- 18:31>> 24. 24.
- 18:32>> Well, if you do that, you back into the
- 18:33buys in first round either. Some kind of
- 18:35play in
- 18:36>> and they gonna run the damn conference
- 18:39championships out and I'm not for that
- 18:41either. College game is a regional game.
- 18:46It's not like the NFL. There people
- 18:48watch the NFL. If their teams knocked
- 18:50out the first round, they'll still watch
- 18:53the last rounds of the football just
- 18:55because they watched pro football. It's
- 18:57not that way in college.
- 18:59>> No. And and look, you know, the the the
- 19:01old saying in the SEC, it just means
- 19:03more. And we you and I have talked about
- 19:05this. Eight of the top 10 most watched
- 19:08college football programs in America,
- 19:10SEC,
- 19:11>> right?
- 19:12>> And and you look at the media markets,
- 19:15you know, I mean,
- 19:17Auburn, Alabama and Gainesville and and
- 19:19and some of these other places are not
- 19:21near are not nearly as big as, you know,
- 19:23some of those Big 10 markets. And no,
- 19:26>> people continue to watch. I mean, the
- 19:28difference in the atmosphere. I was at
- 19:30Ohio State a couple years ago and and it
- 19:33was for the Indiana game when, you know,
- 19:36just before Indiana the last two years,
- 19:38but three years ago, I think I was up
- 19:40there and and the the environment is
- 19:43just not even in the same world. I mean,
- 19:45go to Ohio go to Ohio State game and and
- 19:47go to a game at Auburn, go to a game at
- 19:49LSU or it's there just not a comparison.
- 19:52It's just not even in the same world.
- 19:54>> It's just a it's a whole different
- 19:55approach, whole different culture. It's
- 19:57a whole different I mean, they like
- 19:59their football and they support it, but
- 20:00they're just not as into it. You know,
- 20:03it's just not a big thing to them
- 20:05socially and it is in the South. But I I
- 20:08don't know. I I guess to sum it up, I I
- 20:11hope they can get to 16. I hope they can
- 20:14have a home game, all eight top seeds
- 20:16get a home game that first round and
- 20:19just play it on down. I don't want to
- 20:21see it get past past 16. wouldn't bother
- 20:24me at all if it went back to eight, but
- 20:27I don't like the buys and I don't like
- 20:2920some teams getting in.
- 20:31>> I'm not for 24. I I've always been for
- 20:33more access. Uh I mean considering
- 20:36considering the crew job Auburn's had
- 20:38over the years and you know 83 and you
- 20:40know 93 was probation, but 83 2004 I
- 20:43mean uh you know on and on. I've always
- 20:46been for expanded access. I'm not for
- 20:48expanded access of 24 teams. I just
- 20:50think if if you're doing that, what what
- 20:53are we doing? I mean that's
- 20:55>> right.
- 20:56>> Yeah. I mean that's that's you know
- 20:57anybody can win on a given day. You let
- 21:00everybody in, somebody's going to get
- 21:02beat because on that particular day they
- 21:04had a really good player out and they
- 21:07and they did something stupid and the
- 21:08other team got lucky and now they're
- 21:10gone and the other team didn't even
- 21:12deserve to be there. So yeah, the
- 21:14season's got to mean something. It's
- 21:16like the NFL, you know, you got teams
- 21:19that 500, but they win their division
- 21:23>> or the conference. Yeah. Division, and
- 21:25so they get to go. You got a team
- 21:27sitting over there, won 10 games, they
- 21:29don't even get in, you know.
- 21:30>> Or or they're playing, we don't need to
- 21:33be the NFL.
- 21:34>> Or or you got you got a team that's
- 21:36eight and eight or nine and seven, they
- 21:37won a division and they're hoping
- 21:39playoff game against a team that won 11
- 21:40or 12.
- 21:41>> Yeah. And you know, I mean, it is what
- 21:44it is, but I I'm like you. I I college
- 21:47football is more regional and I, you
- 21:50know, and that's I'm not a big fan of
- 21:52and Auburn has done it. I guess
- 21:54everybody's doing it now, but you know,
- 21:56Auburn's going out and like everybody
- 21:58else, uh, this portal signing kids from
- 22:00California and Arizona and, you know,
- 22:03and I get it. It's that's that's the way
- 22:05of college football. But I I just think
- 22:06if you can sign kids that grew up that,
- 22:09you know, they want to play for Clemson,
- 22:11they want to play for Auburn, they want
- 22:12to play for Alabama or LSU, I think that
- 22:14ma I think that matters. I think it's I
- 22:17think if you get a kid that wants to
- 22:18play uh for your school versus
- 22:22bringing in a hired gun from Oregon
- 22:26[laughter]
- 22:26or New York. Um I I think I'll take the,
- 22:30you know, all things being equal, I
- 22:31think I'll take the kid right down the
- 22:32road here.
- 22:33>> I wish we could still do it that way. I
- 22:35just,
- 22:37you know, when you you look at how it
- 22:38all came to be, okay, you had schools
- 22:41first and then they started playing the
- 22:44game some and then they finally said,
- 22:46you know, it' be a heck of a lot better
- 22:47if we'd form a conference and we all
- 22:50play each other and so we're not every
- 22:52other year traveling over to Oklahoma to
- 22:55find some school to play us because the
- 22:57rest of the people don't. Then it then
- 22:58it kind of you know it went on from
- 23:00there you know they had to tell them hey
- 23:01if you're going to be in this conference
- 23:03you got to have these number of sports
- 23:06you know and then conference becomes
- 23:08really the focus then you get to go to a
- 23:10bowl game if you have a good season now
- 23:13here we are we're trying to be the NFL
- 23:15and it's just not workable it ain't 36
- 23:17teams it's 150 teams I think I don't
- 23:20know about something like that some of
- 23:22them are a lot bigger got a whole lot
- 23:24more money than others and you and you
- 23:26got to have governing bodies to keep the
- 23:28damn parody in it or it's going to
- 23:30destroy it. I just believe that if they
- 23:32keep letting money be the factor and
- 23:36right now you're going to have a hard
- 23:37time convincing me that make any other
- 23:39decisions based on anything other than
- 23:42how much money you gonna give me.
- 23:44>> Look around the kid is the kid in the
- 23:46portal. How much money you gonna give
- 23:48me? The kid in high school, how much
- 23:50money you gonna give me? The coach is
- 23:52taking the job, how much money you gonna
- 23:54give me? how much how much how long my
- 23:57contract then and even it goes right on
- 24:00up when the ads get the phone call from
- 24:03the commissioner and we want you to do
- 24:05this do that how much they gonna pay us
- 24:08>> how much is Disney gonna give us to do
- 24:10that
- 24:11>> and it's just that's what that's all
- 24:13it's about anymore
- 24:15>> well and you look I mean just and this
- 24:16is what's what I'm about to read here I
- 24:18mean Duke sues quarterback Daren Mensah
- 24:21for alleged violation of NIL deal in
- 24:24effort to stop him from entering
- 24:25transfer portal. There's a lot more of
- 24:27that coming.
- 24:29>> Yeah, they ain't going to win. I mean,
- 24:30but under the present circumstances, the
- 24:32kid's going to win. Now, I was I was
- 24:35told that whoever got him is going to
- 24:37have to pay the money back to Duke that
- 24:40the kid didn't earn. In other words, I
- 24:42don't know what I I don't know how these
- 24:44contracts are being written. Some damn
- 24:46fools are signing them on the side of
- 24:48the schools.
- 24:49>> Yes,
- 24:50>> we got some idiots doing contracts from
- 24:52these collectives, I guess. I don't
- 24:54know. But but you you you got to have it
- 24:56paid by a period of time and and hell if
- 24:59you leave it stops.
- 25:00>> Yeah.
- 25:01>> I mean that's just common sense. And
- 25:03just like the suit that who's who suing
- 25:05uh who was a kid that went out is it
- 25:09somebody was suing one of the players
- 25:11last year because they they gave him the
- 25:13money to lump some agreement and the kid
- 25:16didn't stay the whole year.
- 25:17>> Yeah. I forget who it was. But no,
- 25:19you're right. I mean
- 25:19>> I think it's Georgia. I think Georgia.
- 25:21>> It was Georgia. It was Georgia. But
- 25:23these, you know, you got to have legal,
- 25:26you got to have your attorneys look at
- 25:27it and you gota and now you got you got
- 25:31[laughter]
- 25:31>> half of them got attorneys running the
- 25:33collectives.
- 25:34>> That's what
- 25:35>> damn law schools today. I don't know. I
- 25:38don't know if I'd hire them lawyers.
- 25:40>> Well, you got you got quote unquote
- 25:41agents that that are running around and
- 25:43they're charging these kids anywhere
- 25:45from 3% to 20%. and and it's just, you
- 25:49know, there's there's no there's and
- 25:51these guys, a lot of them have some of
- 25:52them have most of them don't have law
- 25:53degrees. They're just runners. And
- 25:56>> well, I just saw something in the news
- 25:59and I didn't read through it. I just
- 26:00read the headline and bounced on down. A
- 26:03lot of kids now are trying to sue their
- 26:06agents because they talked them into
- 26:08getting in the portal and they said,
- 26:09"We've already found out where you can
- 26:10get it get $2 million. We can get
- 26:14$30,000 or whatever amount it is."
- 26:16they're telling them and they get in the
- 26:18portal and they ain't got crap and the
- 26:20agent's the one that talked them into
- 26:22it. So, you got all kind of stuff going
- 26:24on which somebody should have known
- 26:27three years ago. This is not going to
- 26:29work. You can't handle a bunch of 17,
- 26:3218, 19 year olds and have all these
- 26:34adults and these rats hanging around.
- 26:37They're going to end up cor corrupting
- 26:39the whole thing.
- 26:41>> Yep. And and the calendar screwed up. I
- 26:43mean, you're we're killing the goose
- 26:45that laid the golden egg. And I
- 26:46understand that college football was
- 26:49undermonetized and undervalued for years
- 26:51like like, you know, the brands were
- 26:53were under undervalued. And I I again, I
- 26:55get all that and that's 100% right. But
- 26:57now you've gone from from undervalued
- 27:00and undermonetized to now everything's
- 27:03hypermonetized. You've got you've got
- 27:06advertisements painted on the field.
- 27:08Every every it seems like every decision
- 27:09is made by okay, how can we make the
- 27:11most money?
- 27:12>> Um They have they got to chase those
- 27:16dollars.
- 27:17>> Well, and now you got NIL dollars. You
- 27:19know, Auburn Auburn just signed a deal
- 27:20next year to to play Baylor in the in
- 27:22the in Atlanta versus playing them in
- 27:24Jordan Air. And a lot of it is, you
- 27:26know, NIL money built in. New Nike deal,
- 27:28NIL money built in. Um, it's just a
- 27:31different world. Every everything that
- 27:33used to be not legal is now legal.
- 27:37>> Yep. And some of it needed to be
- 27:39changed. But when they castrated the
- 27:41NCAA
- 27:42before they, you know, worked through
- 27:45it. Of course, it was their fault for
- 27:47delaying, delaying, delaying. But you
- 27:49got no governing body now. And if you
- 27:52do, and they try to rule on something,
- 27:54the lawyers just go shopping one of
- 27:56these progressive liberal judges and
- 27:58they side with the kid.
- 28:00It's a mess. It's a mess.
- 28:04Wells, it's been it's been great doing
- 28:07this season with you and uh appreciate
- 28:10your time. It's been I know that that
- 28:11everybody on the message board has has
- 28:13enjoyed you all year.
- 28:14>> Well, I hope so. But it's been fun and
- 28:17you know I look back on this year and
- 28:18like the last 5 10 minutes we've been
- 28:21criticizing everything wrong college
- 28:22football and I heard heard a statement
- 28:25the other day it's it's foolproof or
- 28:28it's something proof that it's such a
- 28:30great sport environment and and
- 28:34I mean it just I think they said it was
- 28:36idiot proof. So all these idiots chasing
- 28:39the money that are doing things they
- 28:41think they're helping they about to tear
- 28:42this whole dang thing down. When you
- 28:44look back over this season, it's pretty
- 28:46damn entertaining. It so it doesn't
- 28:48matter where the kids play as long as
- 28:50the kids are playing college football
- 28:52and we've got the playoffs. We got this,
- 28:54got that. A lot of things along with it,
- 28:56but the game itself
- 28:58is
- 28:59>> feel pretty good.
- 29:00>> Yeah, the game itself is as good as it's
- 29:02ever been. Now, all the all the window
- 29:04dressing that goes around it and all the
- 29:06drama and the the calendar and the this
- 29:08and that and the other is is is a mess.
- 29:10But the on the field, it's as good as
- 29:13it's ever been.
- 29:15Yep.
- 29:16>> Well, thanks to everybody for listening
- 29:17and click like and subscribe below and
- 29:20uh it really helps us out and I guess
- 29:22we'll see you next year.
