- 0:01Dayna Roselli: Welcome to episode 156 of Vegas Revealed.
- 0:04Dayna Roselli: The countdown is on to Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.
- 0:08Dayna Roselli: But before the big game, there's a Super Ball headed our way.
- 0:12Dayna Roselli: We'll explain.
- 0:13Sean McAllister: Tourists from Hawaii may have to pay more for their Vegas fix.
- 0:17Sean McAllister: Find out why.
- 0:19Sean McAllister: Plus, we've talked about it before, but now it's official.
- 0:23Sean McAllister: U2 is set for a residency at the new MSG Sphere.
- 0:27Sean McAllister: We've got the new details.
- 0:29Dayna Roselli: We visit one of the most unique bookstores in all of Las Vegas, and wine angels are flying out of Mandalay Bay.
- 0:36Dayna Roselli: But don't worry, there's a new culinary residency coming in.
- 0:40Dayna Roselli: Huh?
- 0:41Dayna Roselli: Yeah, we're gonna discuss this.
- 0:44Sean McAllister: So much to get to this week on Vegas Revealed.
- 0:49Sean McAllister: But first, have you downloaded the Vegas Near Me app yet?
- 0:53Sean McAllister: That is the big question.
- 0:55Sean McAllister: It is a must-have if you live in Las Vegas or you plan to visit here.

- 1:58Sean McAllister: You watch and listen all inside the app.
- 2:02Sean McAllister: If it's fun to do or see, it's on Vegas Near Me.
- 2:07Dayna Roselli: Let's get to it now and spin that wheel.
- 2:36Sean McAllister: But uh for a certain population of visitors from Hawaii, it's about to be more expensive, possibly for a whole other reason.
- 2:45Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's an interesting topic because I don't know, I feel like this kind of came out of nowhere.
- 2:51Dayna Roselli: Do you feel that way?
- 2:52Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 2:52Dayna Roselli: And we're talking about this new bill that was introduced.
- 2:55Dayna Roselli: Now, let's just go back here.
- 2:57Dayna Roselli: A bill was introduced and then it changed.
- 3:02Dayna Roselli: So the first bill that was introduced, it was introduced by state senator Stanley Chang.
- 3:06Dayna Roselli: And we're saying introduce in Hawaii, okay?
- 3:09Dayna Roselli: It would have originally banned all advertising of gambling-related tours to Las Vegas.
- 3:15Dayna Roselli: That's what they wanted to do.
- 3:16Dayna Roselli: Then apparently that got turned down, and now they have imposed a 30, they're pitching to impose a 30% excise tax on gambling travel from Hawaii.
- 3:32Sean McAllister: And this is a big thing.
- 3:34Sean McAllister: There are a lot of Hawaiians who have who come to Las Vegas for vacations.
- 3:40Sean McAllister: Even I mean, the the California Hotel downtown is one of the hotspots where our Hawaiian tourists stay.
- 3:50Sean McAllister: And in large part, it's because they have these kind of junkets, these travel packages that you can buy to come here to Las Vegas.
- 4:01Sean McAllister: And gambling is a big part of that package.
- 4:04Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 4:04Dayna Roselli: And we yeah, you're right.
- 4:06Dayna Roselli: I think you and I did the numbers one time, and I remember we were astonished at how many people visit Las Vegas from Hawaii every year.
- 4:12Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's a ton.
- 4:13Dayna Roselli: A ton.
- 4:14Dayna Roselli: So apparently, Hawaii is a non-gambling state, but this senator is saying doesn't mean that we don't have a problem with gambling addiction.
- 4:26Dayna Roselli: That's his quote.
- 4:27Dayna Roselli: He says Hawaii is a non-gambling state, but that doesn't mean that we don't have a problem with gambling addiction.
- 4:34Dayna Roselli: So what he's saying is we need to stop promoting trips to Las Vegas to gamble.
- 4:40Sean McAllister: And he's saying that a lot of people who come here to Las Vegas have a gambling problem.
- 4:44Sean McAllister: Right.
- 4:45Sean McAllister: But there's no resources in place to help them out.
- 4:48Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 4:49Dayna Roselli: So I didn't, I, you know, I thought we kind of had this like shared love back and forth.
- 4:54Dayna Roselli: So I guess this was a surprise to me.
- 4:57Dayna Roselli: But I mean, I guess when he's pointing out the gambling side of things, I guess in his world, he's making a point that we shouldn't be promoting gambling in Hawaii and saying go travel Vegas and have advertisements all over.
- 5:11Dayna Roselli: I mean, I guess that's what he's saying.
- 5:13Dayna Roselli: But the packages will be taxed.
- 5:16Dayna Roselli: So you and I were saying, well, like if you go book your own trip to Vegas on Expedia or whatever, that's different.
- 5:23Sean McAllister: Right.
- 5:23Sean McAllister: Like you're free to do whatever you want, but it's these companies that are based in Hawaii that are going to really take the hit.
- 5:33Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 5:33Dayna Roselli: Almost like travel agency type.
- 5:35Dayna Roselli: Exactly.
- 5:36Dayna Roselli: Which, yeah, that's gonna be hard because how do you say come with us?
- 5:40Dayna Roselli: I mean, I guess it's like really if you it's someone you've used over and over and you're happy with, or I don't know, they have to cut some things or really find you a deal to make up for the 30% tax.
- 5:51Sean McAllister: I mean, it hasn't gone through yet, but yeah, this is still all uh proposed.
- 5:55Sean McAllister: Nothing has been voted on.
- 5:58Sean McAllister: But I I certainly hope that there's uh not anything that that essentially penalizes uh our Hawaiian tourists from coming here and enjoying themselves.
- 6:09Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 6:09Dayna Roselli: I mean, I feel like everyone finds a way around something, right?
- 6:12Dayna Roselli: I mean, we like like even Las Vegas doesn't obviously approve of gambling addiction.
- 6:19Dayna Roselli: We have a lot of signs up.
- 6:21Sean McAllister: There's pamphlets on the side of every ATM on the casino floor that you know it's that slogan, when the fun stops, and then they list all the resources that are available.
- 6:32Sean McAllister: Yeah, but I guess this lawmaker in Hawaii is saying that there aren't resources available in Hawaii for people, and he's proposing this tax in order to raise funds to make that available to people who feel as though they need it.
- 6:50Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 6:51Dayna Roselli: And wasn't there a time where they talked about um building a casino there on a certain piece of land that was sacred or something?
- 7:00Sean McAllister: Yeah, I feel like there was talk about uh a casino there.
- 7:04Sean McAllister: Got turned down, yeah.
- 7:05Dayna Roselli: So all right, well, um, that's what's going on in Hawaii.
- 7:09Dayna Roselli: Um, aloha, and then moving now back to Las Vegas.
- 7:16Dayna Roselli: We got a lot going on here.
- 7:17Dayna Roselli: We just finished up.
- 7:18Dayna Roselli: Well, we didn't just finish up, you know, the country finished up, America finished up its Super Bowl that happened in Arizona close by.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:26Dayna Roselli: But you and I were at a Super Bowl party and we looked at each other and went, it's so crazy that like we're getting the Super Bowl next already.
- 7:32Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 7:32Dayna Roselli: It's already like a year away.
- 7:35Sean McAllister: I mean, it's gonna be nuts.
- 7:36Sean McAllister: The countdown is on, you know, to Super Bowl 58 here in Las Vegas at Allegiance Stadium.
- 7:44Sean McAllister: And aside from the game, I mean, there's always, you know, concerts and fan events that surround uh the Super Bowl.
- 7:53Sean McAllister: And I mean, Las Vegas is just gonna go crazy.
- 7:58Sean McAllister: It is going to be insane here for Super Bowl weekend.
- 8:02Dayna Roselli: It really is.
- 8:03Dayna Roselli: And you and I were chatting with our friend, I think it was Craig, that was telling us, you know, and he puts on a lot of different big uh music festivals around town and covers a lot of events, um, works with a lot of events all across the country, and was saying he was in Arizona for a brief time and like it just the city was like he'd never seen it.
- 8:24Dayna Roselli: Yeah um with the Super Bowl there.
- 8:26Dayna Roselli: And he was saying it's gonna be, and I was like, Oh, well, we're used to big events, it'll be and he was like, No, this is gonna be like times 10.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:34Dayna Roselli: And I'm like, really?
- 8:35Dayna Roselli: Because I just figured, you know, we put on big events all the time.
- 8:38Dayna Roselli: I know it's gonna be huge, but we'll just do it right.
- 8:39Dayna Roselli: And he was like, No, I think it's gonna be something that we have never seen.
- 8:42Dayna Roselli: And I'm like, well, it'll be after F1, so we'll have good experience, true, you know, with a huge event like that.
- 8:50Dayna Roselli: Um, you know, obviously, you know, the world kind of keeps eyes on the Super Bowl, but mostly the country.
- 8:57Dayna Roselli: F1's gonna be the world.
- 8:59Sean McAllister: It is.
- 8:59Sean McAllister: So what's a global event?
- 9:01Dayna Roselli: Get through that first.
- 9:03Sean McAllister: And our uh Las Vegas Super Bowl host committee was down there in Phoenix, kind of surveying all of the all of the events and uh logistically how everything uh was put on.
- 9:17Sean McAllister: There were representatives of Las Vegas law enforcement down there to, you know, work and kind of shadow um the police there in Phoenix and the FBI who come in to to help out um with such a large-scale event.
- 9:34Sean McAllister: So uh Vegas is gonna be ready.
- 9:36Sean McAllister: And then the day after Super Bowl, there was kind of a transition news conference that was held to officially pass the torch to our Las Vegas Super Bowl host committee.
- 9:49Sean McAllister: And um, there's a kind of a big monument that's gonna be showing up around town.
- 9:56Dayna Roselli: Yeah, the Super Ball, it's called.
- 9:59Dayna Roselli: And guess what?
- 9:59Dayna Roselli: They sent us a fact sheet.
- 10:01Dayna Roselli: So I just opened it, took me a minute.
- 10:03Dayna Roselli: The super ball, yeah, it's gonna be making its way right from Arizona to Las Vegas on this truck.
- 10:10Dayna Roselli: It's got the Vegas, you know, logo on it and everything like that.
- 10:15Dayna Roselli: So that's kind of fun.
- 10:16Dayna Roselli: All right, here's some facts, Sean.
- 10:17Dayna Roselli: You haven't seen this.
- 10:18Dayna Roselli: Okay.
- 10:19Dayna Roselli: The super ball that is gonna be there.
- 10:22Dayna Roselli: By the way, it has its own hashtag.
- 10:23Dayna Roselli: Hashtag Vegas Superball.
- 10:25Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 10:26Dayna Roselli: Uh, the superball is 13 feet long and by eight feet in diameter.
- 10:31Dayna Roselli: Once it's on the base, the total height is nine feet.
- 10:34Dayna Roselli: Wow.
- 10:35Dayna Roselli: Its inner is made from carved blocks of beadboard foam.
- 10:41Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 10:43Dayna Roselli: The foam blocks were sculpted using five-axis router machines, and the additional details were sculpted by hand, apparently.
- 10:52Sean McAllister: Exactly how I would have assumed it it would be made.
- 10:55Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 10:55Dayna Roselli: Then it goes into the ball itself weighs close to 1200 pounds, and the base stand is an additional 400 pounds.
- 11:03Sean McAllister: So essentially, this is a giant football that's mounted on the back of a really fancy flatbed truck.
- 11:11Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 11:12Dayna Roselli: And once the hard coat was dry, the texture of the pig skin was painted by hand.
- 11:16Dayna Roselli: Oh.
- 11:18Dayna Roselli: And um it took approximately 30 crew members to fabricate the ball.
- 11:24Dayna Roselli: So there's your fact sheet.
- 11:25Dayna Roselli: This ball is one of a kind.
- 11:27Sean McAllister: So now the this super ball is being driven from Phoenix, as Dana mentioned, to Las Vegas.
- 11:34Sean McAllister: And over the course of the next year, it's going to be making appearances at different events to promote the fact that we've got Super Bowl next year.
- 11:44Dayna Roselli: I'm excited.
- 11:45Dayna Roselli: I want a picture with the Super Bowl.
- 11:47Dayna Roselli: Coming up on our tips, you'll want to stick around because we have a way that you can participate as a volunteer.
- 11:53Dayna Roselli: There is a way, and you'll want to get signed up soon.
- 11:56Dayna Roselli: So stick around for our tips.
- 11:58Sean McAllister: And kind of something that happened in conjunction with uh this year's Super Bowl is that U2 made it official.
- 12:08Sean McAllister: Their Vegas residency is happening.
- 12:11Sean McAllister: We've talked about this that U2 was that they were going to be performing at the MSG sphere.
- 12:17Dayna Roselli: It's like rumored but never denied.
- 12:19Sean McAllister: Exactly.
- 12:20Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 12:21Dayna Roselli: So they uh put on a Super Bowl commercial, and you could tell by the end and when the words came up that they are going to be performing at the MSG sphere.
- 12:32Dayna Roselli: So uh the sphere's opening this fall before F1.
- 12:35Dayna Roselli: I think this show even I don't know if it's gonna be in November.
- 12:39Dayna Roselli: I thought somebody mentioned in October.
- 12:40Dayna Roselli: I think it's supposed to open in October, but U2's doing what, three shows at least locked in.
- 12:45Dayna Roselli: And I don't think they've been actually on tour uh for four years, according to the press release.
- 12:50Dayna Roselli: So it's a big thing for U2 to get out there and be out there and do this.
- 12:56Dayna Roselli: But they said the sphere is the perfect place for them to be able to show and tell this story of music.
- 13:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, and uh it's funny.
- 13:05Sean McAllister: The the ad that they put out, the the video to announce these shows, it was I was laughing to myself because it was very reminiscent of uh that big Chinese spy balloon that was shot down.
- 13:20Dayna Roselli: And you almost wonder, was it meant to be or was the timing like were we?
- 13:24Sean McAllister: I was thinking that.
- 13:24Sean McAllister: I was like, man, did they do that after these floating objects were you know spotted and shot down over North America?
- 13:34Sean McAllister: I think it was probably planned ahead of time because it is the it looks like the sphere, it looks like the MSG sphere is floating all over the world.
- 13:44Dayna Roselli: It does, it does.
- 13:45Dayna Roselli: So so maybe we shot down the wrong thing.
- 13:47Dayna Roselli: Maybe it was just a YouTube promotion the whole time.
- 13:55Dayna Roselli: It's an interesting ad for sure, and it looks like when you know, when you think about the MSG sphere and what it's going to be able to do and show and how it's gonna be done, you and I were both saying it's very like, I don't even want to compare it to Epcot Center because I'm sure it's like times 1000 with the technology and stuff, but very reminiscent of back in the day, the glimpse of technology that we that was a big deal to us was going to something like Epcot Center and sitting in that globe and watching that whole was it, the Michael Jackson experience and forgot what it was called.
- 14:30Sean McAllister: Uh spaceship.
- 14:31Sean McAllister: Oh well, Michael the ball is Spaceship Earth.
- 14:34Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 14:34Sean McAllister: But what was inside Captain EO.
- 14:36Sean McAllister: Oh, Captain EOS Michael Jackson movie.
- 14:38Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 14:38Dayna Roselli: I know it's like way, way far, but I'm just saying, like back when we were young, that was like a big deal, right?
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:44Dayna Roselli: So we knew it was gonna be something absolutely spectacular.
- 14:47Dayna Roselli: This looks great.
- 14:48Dayna Roselli: Um, and it's gonna probably blow our mind.
- 14:50Dayna Roselli: But yeah, I love that you two said, you know what, this is the perfect spot.
- 14:54Dayna Roselli: Um, we're ready, and nobody can tell the story, no venue.
- 15:00Dayna Roselli: And actually, I'm gonna quote them the sphere is more than just a venue, it's a gallery, and you two's music is going to be all over the walls.
- 15:07Dayna Roselli: And that comes from a statement that came from Bono, The Edge, and Adam.
- 15:14Dayna Roselli: Who's Adam?
- 15:15Dayna Roselli: I don't know why I'd have to go back.
- 15:16Dayna Roselli: They put out a statement saying this is the perfect spot.
- 15:19Dayna Roselli: So we're excited to see what they do with it.
- 15:20Sean McAllister: Uh, Adam Clayton, he's one of the band members.
- 15:22Dayna Roselli: Oh, perfect.
- 15:23Dayna Roselli: Got it.
- 15:23Sean McAllister: Um, so U2 is going to be performing their 1991 album, Etch Tongue Baby, um, which has a lot of their hits on it.
- 15:32Sean McAllister: Um, and that is the music that we're going to be hearing during these Las Vegas shows.
- 15:37Sean McAllister: And according to one of the renderings that was put out, it looks like that baby's face is going to be kind of projected on the outside of the sphere because you know, the sphere is made up of a whole bunch of video panels.
- 15:54Sean McAllister: And I don't I don't know about having a giant baby's face up there.
- 16:00Dayna Roselli: It's like uh Ellie McBeal, the dancing baby.
- 16:03Sean McAllister: Yes, it's kind of like that.
- 16:04Sean McAllister: Oh my god, I forgot about that.
- 16:07Dayna Roselli: I keep going in the past, everyone's like this Roselli.
- 16:11Dayna Roselli: She's old.
- 16:12Dayna Roselli: She's talking Epcot Center, Captain Eo, and Ellie McBeal.
- 16:16Dayna Roselli: Get a life.
- 16:18Dayna Roselli: It's 2023, lady.
- 16:22Sean McAllister: That dancing baby was popular for a while, though.
- 16:25Dayna Roselli: It really was.
- 16:26Dayna Roselli: Um, anyway, so yeah, it looks like it's gonna be very interesting.
- 16:30Dayna Roselli: We'll see.
- 16:31Dayna Roselli: We might have to drive by and see the baby's face for a while, but um, that's life and it's Vegas, and nothing is ever very normal, is it?
- 16:40Sean McAllister: But no, it's unexpected, larger than life.
- 16:44Sean McAllister: And what else would you expect from Las Vegas?
- 16:47Dayna Roselli: Um, here's something else that you and I questioned or went, huh, about.
- 16:53Dayna Roselli: Um, well, first of all, let's just tell you what's going on over at Mandalay Bay.
- 16:58Dayna Roselli: A very popular restaurant is gonna be closing.
- 17:01Dayna Roselli: It's been there for a long time.
- 17:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, I mean, from as long as I can remember, it's called Oriole by uh Chef Charlie Palmer, a longtime uh staple here in Las Vegas.
- 17:14Sean McAllister: And the centerpiece of Oriole is this massive glass wine tower that requires the use of what are called wine angels to go and retrieve bottles.
- 17:31Sean McAllister: So basically, it's these servers who are strapped into a harness and they're they're on like this pulley system to take them up to the level of whichever bottle of wine they're going to serve.
- 17:46Sean McAllister: And it it really is a spectacle.
- 17:48Dayna Roselli: Well, and I remember when I first moved here how everyone talked about that.
- 17:52Dayna Roselli: It was like everyone wanted to go there and they're like, well, saving up their money for their big night out dinner, you know, because they knew it was like, you know, expensive, but nice, but the meal was good, but they wanted the wine angel experience.
- 18:04Dayna Roselli: It was huge.
- 18:05Sean McAllister: I used to go over and just watch the wine angels going up and down.
- 18:10Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's been around for a while.
- 18:12Dayna Roselli: I don't know exactly how many years, but I think since you and I got here.
- 18:15Sean McAllister: I mean, I I don't remember it not being here, so yeah, it's got to be close to 20 years.
- 18:21Dayna Roselli: Yeah, because you got here what, 2005, six five.
- 18:24Dayna Roselli: Okay, me four, so 2004.
- 18:25Dayna Roselli: So yeah.
- 18:26Dayna Roselli: Um, oh, and see, now I stare at the article and it's right in my face.
- 18:30Dayna Roselli: 20 years.
- 18:33Sean McAllister: So it has been close to 20 years.
- 18:35Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 18:36Dayna Roselli: Uh okay, so we were right.
- 18:37Dayna Roselli: See, it was like bum ba-da.
- 18:39Dayna Roselli: Results revealed.
- 18:40Dayna Roselli: Um, I like when we quiz ourselves and then we're right.
- 18:42Dayna Roselli: Okay, well, anyway, it is closing.
- 18:44Dayna Roselli: And so sad to see that go.
- 18:46Dayna Roselli: But two brothers are coming in to take over, and they're calling it a culinary residency for a year.
- 18:54Dayna Roselli: And you and I went, wait, we have culinary residencies?
- 18:57Dayna Roselli: What is this?
- 18:57Dayna Roselli: Is this a new thing?
- 18:58Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 18:59Dayna Roselli: So I'm not sure.
- 19:00Dayna Roselli: And the brothers, I I'm not a big food channel watcher, a top chef watcher, but um, I know you were familiar with who they are, and I know that they're very famous in that world.
- 19:10Dayna Roselli: So excuse me for not knowing who they are.
- 19:12Sean McAllister: Yeah, the Voltagio Brothers, they're um, you know, uh people got to know them on early seasons of Top Chef on when it used to be on the maybe it still is on the Bravo Network.
- 19:25Sean McAllister: I haven't watched recent seasons.
- 19:27Sean McAllister: Um, but the Voltagio Brothers, they rose to fame on that show and then have had really astronomical culinary careers ever since then, and they have done a lot of kind of pop-up uh restaurant experiences here in Las Vegas over the years as well.
- 19:49Sean McAllister: So they're no stranger to the strip.
- 19:52Dayna Roselli: Okay, yeah.
- 19:52Dayna Roselli: And it looks like, yeah, it's like Charlie Palmer's just like passing the torch.
- 19:56Dayna Roselli: Um, so yeah, it looks like they've spent many years with the Charlie Palmer Collective, like you just said.
- 20:04Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 20:04Dayna Roselli: And they are debuting this spot.
- 20:08Dayna Roselli: It's called Retro by Voltagio.
- 20:11Dayna Roselli: I like that.
- 20:12Dayna Roselli: Like I mentioned, they're calling it a one-year culinary residency.
- 20:16Dayna Roselli: And it's gonna happen this spring over at Mandalay Bay, and it's gonna occupy that space, which is gonna close, and we'll have to see what they turn it into, if they put their own twist on it, if it's just gonna be their kind of menu, what changes, or if they're just gonna kind of move into that spot and keep it the same.
- 20:36Dayna Roselli: I don't know.
- 20:37Sean McAllister: I think it's a really interesting concept, this culinary residency idea, though, because it does keep uh it keeps the restaurant fresh and evolving, and it's a new reason for people to go back there.
- 20:54Dayna Roselli: No, I agree.
- 20:55Dayna Roselli: And you wonder like, do they try it out and then if it works, they just stay on?
- 20:58Dayna Roselli: Is it more like a, you know, hey, let's see how this goes?
- 21:01Dayna Roselli: It's a good idea instead of like, you know, gutting the whole place and doing all that.
- 21:05Dayna Roselli: Um, I went into the article a little further and I noticed it's got the name retro.
- 21:10Dayna Roselli: So apparently, according to the review journal, um, also revealed is the inspiration for retro.
- 21:17Dayna Roselli: And it's it's gonna take you back to the 80s and 90s.
- 21:20Dayna Roselli: And they say the 80s and 90s saw unforgettable moments in music, fashion, movies, TV shows, food, and countless trends that like the dancing baby.
- 21:29Dayna Roselli: Yes, like the dancing baby.
- 21:31Dayna Roselli: See, everyone else wants to go back to the 80s and 90s.
- 21:34Dayna Roselli: Um, you know, it obviously swept the nation, and Retro's gonna celebrate that nostalgia in every element of the experience while putting their own spin on the beloved dishes from that era.
- 21:47Dayna Roselli: So this sounds interesting.
- 21:48Sean McAllister: It does.
- 21:49Sean McAllister: I'm liking this a lot.
- 21:50Dayna Roselli: I like it too.
- 21:52Dayna Roselli: Yeah, like to go back.
- 21:54Dayna Roselli: It's just like we were saying in our last podcast everyone's coming back.
- 21:58Dayna Roselli: Duran Duran's coming and Depeche mode and you know, people from Boy George is right now at the win.
- 22:04Dayna Roselli: And it's like it people are visiting the past.
- 22:08Sean McAllister: Everything old is new again.
- 22:10Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 22:10Dayna Roselli: Sometimes when the new again stuff is kind of not really taking off as much as maybe it should, or people aren't loving it as much, we just bring back the past.
- 22:20Dayna Roselli: And we're like, you know what?
- 22:21Dayna Roselli: If it worked and people are willing to do it and participate and come back, then why not?
- 22:26Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 22:26Sean McAllister: So it'll be interesting to see a retro by Voltagio uh culinary residency.
- 22:34unknown: Yep.
- 22:35Dayna Roselli: So I can't wait for that.
- 22:36Dayna Roselli: Anyway, uh, wonder if we'll see more culinary residencies too.
- 22:40Dayna Roselli: So I hope we'll have to keep our eye out for that.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:43Dayna Roselli: Hey, um, you and I wanted to talk movies for a minute.
- 22:46Dayna Roselli: We've been wanting to talk about this actually for several months, but we never have time.
- 22:50Dayna Roselli: And it's a perfect time to talk about it because not only did we go to Magic Mike and see Magic Mike um the screening, which was an event very different than just a regular walk up and buy your ticket experience.
- 23:02Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 23:02Dayna Roselli: You also went to see Titanic when they released it over the weekend.
- 23:06Dayna Roselli: Because it's the what 28th?
- 23:08Sean McAllister: 25th anniversary.
- 23:10Dayna Roselli: 25th anniversary.
- 23:11Sean McAllister: And so it's been remastered and re-released in 3D.
- 23:15Dayna Roselli: How was it?
- 23:16Sean McAllister: It was, I mean, listen, I have always loved Titanic.
- 23:20Sean McAllister: I think I've seen it probably a hundred times.
- 23:23Sean McAllister: And any chance that I I get to sit down and watch it, I still do.
- 23:29Sean McAllister: And it was great.
- 23:30Sean McAllister: I thought it was really it was cool, especially the underwater scenes where it actually takes you to the wreckage.
- 23:37Sean McAllister: That was really cool to see in 3D.
- 23:40Sean McAllister: And like you know, there's a few times when like eels are swimming around in the wreckage, and it it felt like you were down there.
- 23:49Sean McAllister: That's cool.
- 23:50Sean McAllister: It really was.
- 23:50Dayna Roselli: So is it in and out like it's gone now?
- 23:53Sean McAllister: Uh no, I think it's doing a uh it's gonna be in theaters for you know an actual extended release period.
- 24:01Sean McAllister: Um and it was good.
- 24:04Sean McAllister: I highly recommend it.
- 24:05Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 24:06Sean McAllister: But uh it's not necessarily movies that uh we've been wanting to talk about, it's the whole movie going experience.
- 24:17Sean McAllister: And I don't know, judging uh based off of the uh past experiences that I've had recently, it has just deteriorated.
- 24:29Sean McAllister: People have gotten so rude, like coming in late, disrupting the people in the in the row.
- 24:37Sean McAllister: I've on two separate occasions, people have come in late, sat down next to us, and proceeded to ask us what they missed.
- 24:47Sean McAllister: And I'm like, you know what?
- 24:49Sean McAllister: Screw off.
- 24:51Sean McAllister: Like, you're the one who was late.
- 24:53Sean McAllister: It's not my responsibility to catch you up on what's been going on.
- 24:57Sean McAllister: Show up on time and uh take this in for yourself.
- 25:01Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 25:01Dayna Roselli: I I remember we've been talking about this for months and months and months, and there was another time that you went to another movie, and I think you said it was a little messy too, wasn't it?
- 25:12Dayna Roselli: A lot of trash on the ground or something like that.
- 25:15Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I remember you talking about that.
- 25:16Sean McAllister: And not a lot of theater staff, right?
- 25:19Sean McAllister: Which I know, you know, there is a worker shortage in just about every industry that you look at.
- 25:25Dayna Roselli: Well, and that's the thing.
- 25:26Dayna Roselli: So we wait to talk about things when it starts to add up.
- 25:29Dayna Roselli: So basically, you had that experience once, twice, and then I went um a couple times to the movies and I had a similar experience.
- 25:37Dayna Roselli: Then I had another one.
- 25:38Dayna Roselli: We're like, okay, so it's not just a one-off.
- 25:41Dayna Roselli: There is definitely an issue.
- 25:43Dayna Roselli: It's a trend.
- 25:44Dayna Roselli: There's an issue with the movie theater experience now.
- 25:48Dayna Roselli: Um, I went to one recently in Summerlin, and the line for popcorn and a drink was six deep.
- 25:58Dayna Roselli: Um, but we had to wait a half hour.
- 26:00Dayna Roselli: What?
- 26:01Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and it's like you really you go in and it and we went a half hour, like, well, I'd say about 20 minutes before the movie starts, which is some enough time you'd think to get your drink and soda.
- 26:11Dayna Roselli: Um, but we started talking, got in line, and then we were there for, I think in line for 30, had to wait five minutes for everything.
- 26:19Dayna Roselli: We were so frustrated, and I thought, gosh, I mean, this is just ruining my experience.
- 26:25Dayna Roselli: But I love my soda and my popcorn during the movie.
- 26:28Dayna Roselli: So I thought I left enough time.
- 26:30Dayna Roselli: What was frustrating to us is that there was one worker behind the counter, and I kind of felt like when we got up there, uh, my friend was like, what is the issue?
- 26:37Dayna Roselli: And she's like, um, everyone called in sick today, and I'm the only one here.
- 26:42Dayna Roselli: I think it was a holiday too.
- 26:44Dayna Roselli: I want to say it was a Monday holiday, maybe maybe it was like MLK day or something.
- 26:50Dayna Roselli: Anyway, um, and we thought, I feel like you need to kind of announce that.
- 26:53Dayna Roselli: Like, hey, everyone, it's just me today.
- 26:56Dayna Roselli: Be patient.
- 26:57Dayna Roselli: If you want your food and drink, um, it's gonna take a little bit.
- 27:02Dayna Roselli: If not, like go sit down and come back during the movie, something.
- 27:06Dayna Roselli: I don't know, it just felt like what is the situation?
- 27:10Dayna Roselli: It was frustrating.
- 27:11Dayna Roselli: Another time I went to a different movie theater, more in the central uh part of town, and it just was dirty.
- 27:18Dayna Roselli: It just trash everywhere, the bathrooms were dirty, it was hard to find like where you get this or where you pay for that.
- 27:26Dayna Roselli: It just was complicated.
- 27:27Dayna Roselli: Um, and I know you and I actually went to the Top Gun Maverick Preview, too.
- 27:31Dayna Roselli: Yes, and that day was too.
- 27:33Dayna Roselli: That was a there were a lot of people there, and it just was not clean.
- 27:38Sean McAllister: No, and you know what?
- 27:39Sean McAllister: I mean, there it is, uh a big uh customer service experience.
- 27:46Sean McAllister: When you go to the movies, you want to have a good movie theater experience, and especially now in a time when when movies are going straight to streaming services.
- 27:59Sean McAllister: You know, I I've been so off put by a lot of my recent experience that I would rather just wait for movies to come out and watch it at home.
- 28:07Sean McAllister: I know I'm not interrupted, I'm you know, in a in the comfort of you know, our reclining sofa.
- 28:15Dayna Roselli: And no, I know, and I think that's the thing.
- 28:18Dayna Roselli: It's like this is a time for movie theaters to kind of up their game, step it up, yeah.
- 28:21Dayna Roselli: Yeah, instead, you know, I worry this is going to ruin the movies for everyone.
- 28:26Dayna Roselli: And it's people aren't gonna continue to go.
- 28:29Dayna Roselli: You and I have both said when we've gone to these movies, besides probably Top Gun, because it was a preview and people bought tickets for a long time.
- 28:36Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 28:36Dayna Roselli: Ahead that was pretty busy.
- 28:38Dayna Roselli: There's been about, I don't know, 10 people in the movie theater when I've been there.
- 28:43unknown: Yeah.
- 28:43Sean McAllister: How about you?
- 28:44Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's I mean, definitely not packed for sure.
- 28:48Dayna Roselli: I went to see the Whitney Houston movie, and then before that, I went to see the Julia Roberts and George Clooney romantic comedy.
- 28:53Dayna Roselli: So you know, pretty popular movies.
- 28:56Sean McAllister: I will say though, this most recent time when we went to see uh Titanic, uh, we went to the Galaxy Luxury Theater, and I was pleasantly surprised by that experience.
- 29:11Sean McAllister: There, there was plenty of staff.
- 29:13Sean McAllister: There was a theater attendant that came in uh partway through the movie to just check on things.
- 29:19Sean McAllister: Um you know, it it was overall, it it renewed my my faith in the movie going process.
- 29:27Dayna Roselli: Jack and Rose did not disappoint.
- 29:29Sean McAllister: They did not.
- 29:30Sean McAllister: I would have been so sad if Titanic was ruined by some by a nasty experience.
- 29:36Sean McAllister: But I'm curious, you know, for any of you listening, if you're in other parts of the country or even other parts of Las Vegas, you know, send us messages on um on social media, on Twitter, Instagram.
- 29:49Sean McAllister: Uh let us know what what the you know movie theater experience has been like where you are.
- 29:56Dayna Roselli: And if you've had a good one, let us know, and then we can try and you know head that head that that way.
- 30:02Sean McAllister: Because good service, I I think it's important to call out good service as much as it is to call out poor service.
- 30:10Dayna Roselli: I agree.
- 30:11Dayna Roselli: Definitely, definitely.
- 30:12Dayna Roselli: And I try and do that on Twitter when something real goes really, really well to say, hey, shout out to so and so.
- 30:17Dayna Roselli: Because I think you're right, that is important.
- 30:19Dayna Roselli: Um, side note, Titanic.
- 30:22Dayna Roselli: I saw a segment that they did with Steven Spielberg where they tested if Jack would have also gotten on the little piece of raft or wood.
- 30:32Sean McAllister: It was a door.
- 30:33Sean McAllister: Door, yeah.
- 30:33Dayna Roselli: If Jack would have also got on the door, would he have survived?
- 30:38Dayna Roselli: They had they then like Steven Spielberg participated as they did like this whole recreation to see because apparently people for years and years and years have talked about this.
- 30:47Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 30:48Dayna Roselli: Like, why didn't Jack stay on the door?
- 30:51Dayna Roselli: And you know, he could have lived too.
- 30:53Sean McAllister: People have done their own their own tests to try and prove that Jack could have.
- 30:59Sean McAllister: I I believe this is all part of um a special on Discovery Plus.
- 31:05Sean McAllister: It could have been uh where James Cameron kind of goes back.
- 31:08Sean McAllister: I started watching it, um, and he recreated kind of and revisited the theories about the sinking of the ship and said, Yeah, we got this right.
- 31:21Sean McAllister: This part maybe wasn't so accurate.
- 31:25unknown: Right.
- 31:25Dayna Roselli: So it wasn't Steven Spielberg, it was James Cameron.
- 31:27Sean McAllister: James Cameron.
- 31:28Dayna Roselli: Okay, well, so like I'm not even gonna go back and correct that.
- 31:30Dayna Roselli: Uh hopefully everyone, yeah.
- 31:32Dayna Roselli: They're both great.
- 31:33Dayna Roselli: They are they remind me of each other's some of the best movies out there.
- 31:37Dayna Roselli: So whoops, it wasn't Steven Spielberg, it was James Cameron.
- 31:39Dayna Roselli: Okay, James Cameron went through this process.
- 31:42Dayna Roselli: Um, and here's the deal I have the result.
- 31:44Dayna Roselli: You don't aren't you dying to know?
- 31:46Dayna Roselli: I am, or living to know.
- 31:49Dayna Roselli: Um, the result was possibly.
- 31:53Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 31:54Dayna Roselli: They said there's a chance he could have.
- 31:57Dayna Roselli: There's a chance he could not have.
- 31:59Dayna Roselli: So it wasn't clear cut.
- 32:01Sean McAllister: There's a chance he could have taken Rose down with him.
- 32:03Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 32:04Sean McAllister: So thank goodness he didn't.
- 32:06Dayna Roselli: No result.
- 32:06Dayna Roselli: They were like, possibly.
- 32:09Dayna Roselli: Anyway, okay, that's our soapbox on the movie theaters.
- 32:12Dayna Roselli: Um, let's do some tips.
- 32:14Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 32:19Dayna Roselli: All right, my tip this week has to do with a project that we were working on.
- 32:23Dayna Roselli: We were doing a shoot and we wanted to get warm, so we dipped inside a bookstore that has been on the corner of Sixth and Bonneville in that area for a long time, but I've actually never walked inside.
- 32:36Dayna Roselli: And you said I haven't either.
- 32:37Sean McAllister: Right.
- 32:38Dayna Roselli: So we're like, well, let's go check it out.
- 32:39Dayna Roselli: And oh my gosh, cutest bookstore ever.
- 32:42Sean McAllister: It really is.
- 32:43Sean McAllister: I mean, it's like walking into a literary wonderland.
- 32:47Dayna Roselli: It is, right?
- 32:48Dayna Roselli: I was like, oh my gosh, and I feel like, you know, we don't walk into stores like that anymore.
- 32:52Dayna Roselli: It's called the writer's block.
- 32:53Dayna Roselli: Uh, people know about it that love books and are, you know, even frequent downtown a lot.
- 32:59Dayna Roselli: Um, I had just never walked inside.
- 33:01Dayna Roselli: I had heard about it, but all different sections with different categories, everything from nonfiction to fiction to cooking to you name it.
- 33:11Dayna Roselli: Um cute decor, things hanging from the ceiling.
- 33:16Dayna Roselli: Just, I don't even know.
- 33:17Dayna Roselli: There were like cardinals hanging.
- 33:19Dayna Roselli: There was a real live bunny rabbit in a cage.
- 33:21Sean McAllister: There was, and it was so cute.
- 33:23Dayna Roselli: It was so cute, right?
- 33:24Dayna Roselli: And just really pretty.
- 33:26Dayna Roselli: Each section kind of had its own theme.
- 33:28Dayna Roselli: You could just get lost in there, sit in a corner, read a book, and go through the books for hours.
- 33:33Dayna Roselli: They sell new books.
- 33:34Sean McAllister: Yep.
- 33:35Dayna Roselli: Um, we saw Spare.
- 33:37Sean McAllister: Oh, yeah.
- 33:38Sean McAllister: Harry's, yeah, we saw Harry's book, his memoir.
- 33:41Dayna Roselli: Yeah, we saw his memoir over there.
- 33:43Dayna Roselli: We what we kept walking.
- 33:45Dayna Roselli: Um we didn't buy it.
- 33:48Dayna Roselli: But you know what?
- 33:49Dayna Roselli: Um, tons of so what I'm basically getting at is it's it's it's current books.
- 33:54Sean McAllister: Yeah, and there's I was blown away at it kind of how big it was inside.
- 34:01Sean McAllister: Like it kept going.
- 34:02Dayna Roselli: Yes, we thought it was like a teeny little bookstore.
- 34:04Dayna Roselli: No, it kept winding and curving, and yeah, it was great.
- 34:07Dayna Roselli: Um, they also have a little coffee shop with some food items and smoothies, too.
- 34:12Dayna Roselli: I had a violet honey latte.
- 34:15Dayna Roselli: It was delicious.
- 34:16Dayna Roselli: Or violet or was it lavender honey?
- 34:18Sean McAllister: Uh lavender.
- 34:19Dayna Roselli: Sorry, lavender honey.
- 34:20Dayna Roselli: I can't get anything right today.
- 34:21Dayna Roselli: You guys, I woke up very early.
- 34:23Dayna Roselli: I did a morning show today.
- 34:27Dayna Roselli: First of all, I had a Super Bowl party.
- 34:29Dayna Roselli: Then I had to wake up very early.
- 34:32Dayna Roselli: I had to do my hair and makeup and go shoot a show.
- 34:35Dayna Roselli: So that's my excuse.
- 34:37Dayna Roselli: Okay.
- 34:37Dayna Roselli: It wasn't a violent honey, it was a lavender honey latte.
- 34:43Dayna Roselli: Similar.
- 34:44Dayna Roselli: It was delicious.
- 34:45Sean McAllister: It was and I had a uh just a vanilla latte and it was so good.
- 34:51Sean McAllister: Right?
- 34:51Sean McAllister: It was one of the best lattes I've ever had.
- 34:53Dayna Roselli: I feel the same.
- 34:54Dayna Roselli: We were both like, wow, this was like uh just like happiness in our mouth.
- 34:58Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 34:58Dayna Roselli: So I I want to try, you know, they had like um bagels and toasts and things like that there, very limited food, but the smoothies look good too.
- 35:05Dayna Roselli: But what a gem.
- 35:07Dayna Roselli: I just want to give a shout out and a tip that if you are in Vegas and you want to go visit a cool bookstore, have a coffee, check out the writer's block.
- 35:16Sean McAllister: It is a really neat vibe.
- 35:18Sean McAllister: And you mentioned the cardinal that was uh hanging from the ceiling.
- 35:22Sean McAllister: Um, the writer's block actually uh dubs itself partially as an artificial bird sanctuary.
- 35:29Dayna Roselli: Okay, that's why then.
- 35:30Sean McAllister: So that so it all makes sense.
- 35:32Dayna Roselli: Yeah, because I even saw a little owl in the corner.
- 35:34Sean McAllister: Right.
- 35:35Dayna Roselli: Now it does make sense.
- 35:37Sean McAllister: See, it it is a literary wonderland.
- 35:41Dayna Roselli: The things you learn.
- 35:43Dayna Roselli: It's right next to the brand new Beverly Theater that'll officially be opening on March 3rd.
- 35:47Dayna Roselli: We were down there doing a project for them.
- 35:49Dayna Roselli: So that's when we we popped inside.
- 35:51Dayna Roselli: Um, check it out.
- 35:52Dayna Roselli: The writer's block, highly recommend it.
- 35:54Dayna Roselli: Um, even just to visit if you're not interested.
- 35:56Dayna Roselli: They had cute journals too, like little gift ideas in there.
- 35:59Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 36:00Sean McAllister: Journals, pens and the socks, a package of socks that looked like pancakes.
- 36:05Dayna Roselli: Oh, yeah, that was cute.
- 36:06Sean McAllister: It was really cute.
- 36:07Dayna Roselli: Good gift ideas as well.
- 36:09Sean McAllister: So that's a uh good tip, Dana, the writer's block in downtown Las Vegas.
- 36:14Sean McAllister: Um, our other tip, which you mentioned uh earlier in the show, uh, is about how people can become involved in Super Bowl 58 right here in Las Vegas.
- 36:28Sean McAllister: They're because of the sheer volume of events that are going to be put on surrounding the game, uh, they're looking for volunteers to help uh staff everything.
- 36:40Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 36:41Dayna Roselli: We mentioned we got a press release on all the activities.
- 36:44Dayna Roselli: We did the the factoids about the Super Bowl earlier.
- 36:48Dayna Roselli: Well, also on that release, it said for more information on Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas and opportunities to participate, click here.
- 36:55Dayna Roselli: So I did.
- 36:56Dayna Roselli: And what it is, like is like you mentioned, it looks like you you submit things about yourself and they are gonna send you opportunities.
- 37:07Dayna Roselli: We need volunteers for this, or maybe you know, you'd be a perfect fit for that.
- 37:11Dayna Roselli: Um, so it's a really cool sign-up sheet, and you know, it does ask you things like are you multilingual?
- 37:16Dayna Roselli: You know, which is important for something that they might be doing.
- 37:20Dayna Roselli: And so um, it talks about, you know, your name, your obviously how to how to contact you, um, if you're interested in the marketing emails that they want to send out, um, that kind of thing.
- 37:31Dayna Roselli: So um, and it says on one of the categories, how did you hear about the LVCVA volunteer program?
- 37:37Dayna Roselli: So you can say Vegas Revealed.
- 37:39Sean McAllister: Absolutely.
- 37:39Sean McAllister: We'd appreciate it.
- 37:40Dayna Roselli: We're gonna put the link in our show notes.
- 37:42Dayna Roselli: The actual link, I was trying to see if it was like a website.
- 37:45Dayna Roselli: It though it's a little bit long and confusing.
- 37:46Dayna Roselli: So we figure, you know what, let's just link it right up in our show notes.
- 37:50Dayna Roselli: You can click it to find the sign-up for the volunteer opportunities.
- 37:53Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 37:54Sean McAllister: And listen, if you have never been a part of uh Super Bowl events, this is a really cool opportunity.
- 38:02Sean McAllister: So, you know, why not just sign up and get your name in the running?
- 38:06Sean McAllister: And and who knows, you could be part of Super Bowl 58, yeah, right here in Las Vegas.
- 38:12Sean McAllister: Again, go to the link down in our show notes to apply.
- 38:15Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and it gets it also asks you for your event shirt size.
- 38:19Dayna Roselli: So it sounds like you'll get a shirt.
- 38:20Dayna Roselli: Oh, I like it.
- 38:21Dayna Roselli: A volunteer shirt, yeah.
- 38:22Dayna Roselli: Because you and I have been saying, like, we aren't watching this thing at home.
- 38:25Dayna Roselli: I don't care if I'm not working it, I don't care if I'm not invited as press.
- 38:28Dayna Roselli: I don't we have to find a way to be there.
- 38:31Dayna Roselli: And so if I have to volunteer, I will volunteer because that would be really fun.
- 38:34Sean McAllister: Absolutely.
- 38:35Dayna Roselli: So I think a lot of people are gonna sign up for this.
- 38:38Dayna Roselli: So uh we all put our names in before we gave you the link.
