- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, he's here, ladies and gentlemen in our studio, live
- 0:02Speaker 1: and direct. Sean Patrick means he's here. He's an editor
- 0:08Speaker 1: and writer at the Salt Lake Tribune sltrib dot com,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and he's a movie reviewer. You can read his movie
- 0:16Speaker 1: criticisms at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good morning, mister, means good morning. What have we got
- 0:21Speaker 2: four movies to talk about? Another Simple Favor? We we'll start.
- 0:25Speaker 2: This is the sequel to A Simple Favor from twenty eighteen.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You remember that at Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Anna
- 0:31Speaker 2: Kenrick was a baking YouTube mom met the mom of
- 0:34Speaker 2: one of her kids friends, and she was very intriguing
- 0:37Speaker 2: and very beautiful, played by Blake Lively. And there was
- 0:39Speaker 2: martinis and murder and Blake Lively and gorgeous outfits. So
- 0:43Speaker 2: this movie has martiniz and murder and Blake Lively and
- 0:46Speaker 2: gorgeous outfits of course, and some of it in Italy,
- 0:50Speaker 2: but the mix is kind of off here. So Anna
- 0:53Speaker 2: Kendrick in the interim she became a true crime internet
- 0:56Speaker 2: star because she put Blake Lively in prison after the
- 0:59Speaker 2: first movie. Well, this one starts Blake is out of
- 1:02Speaker 2: prison and shows up at Anna's book signing, but Blake's
- 1:05Speaker 2: not there for revenge, or is she?
- 1:08Speaker 3: She says that.
- 1:09Speaker 2: She says she's there to ask Anna to be her
- 1:11Speaker 2: maid of honor when she gets.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Married in Capri.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So Capria is beautiful, the costumes are beautiful, but there's
- 1:17Speaker 2: something off and not just not just that. Anna notices
- 1:19Speaker 2: early on that Blake's fiance with the mafia, and then
- 1:23Speaker 2: somebody gets murdered, and then that's where we were there.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We go, okay, so.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, the ingredients are all here, but the recipe is
- 1:29Speaker 2: definitely not gelling this time around. It's got some moments
- 1:33Speaker 2: and I'll watch Anna Kendrick do pretty much anything. Yes, true,
- 1:35Speaker 2: but no, that's not so good. Two and a half
- 1:38Speaker 2: for another simple favorite. It's streaming on Prime. That sounds
- 1:42Speaker 2: very predictable, so you can avoid it in the privacy.
- 1:44Speaker 2: If you're on Home, there you go.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yep, Capri, that's where the pants come from.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We got two movies about summer vacation. Tristess Christess means
- 1:56Speaker 2: Hello sadness. As you can tell, it's French. This is
- 2:00Speaker 2: based on a French and famous French novel and happens
- 2:02Speaker 2: in France. The movie's in English though, so oh okay, Cecil.
- 2:06Speaker 2: She's nineteen. She's with her dad and her dad's current
- 2:08Speaker 2: girlfriend on vacation and this little seaside villa, and she's
- 2:13Speaker 2: also having her first adult romance with a slightly older
- 2:16Speaker 2: boys who's nearby. Then dad announces that somebody is coming
- 2:20Speaker 2: to visit and her name is Ann and she's an
- 2:22Speaker 2: old friend of Dad and of Cecil's dead mother and
- 2:25Speaker 2: back when they were in college. Anne is played by
- 2:27Speaker 2: Chloe seventy, very enigmatic. She's always trouble, yes, and there's
- 2:34Speaker 2: more going on than Cecil realizes here. Like I said,
- 2:37Speaker 2: this is based on classic French novel. The author was
- 2:39Speaker 2: nineteen when she wrote it, and I like the lead
- 2:43Speaker 2: character here, and nineteen year olds at least in this
- 2:46Speaker 2: movie are not to be trusted because everything is so intense.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Everything is life or death. Yes.
- 2:50Speaker 2: The actress playing Cecil, she's really good. Her name is
- 2:53Speaker 2: Lily McInerney. This is only her second movie. Her first
- 2:55Speaker 2: movie was at Sundance a couple of years ago called
- 2:57Speaker 2: Palm Trees and Power Lines. And she's good. You don't
- 3:01Speaker 2: keep an eye on this on this young woman, she's
- 3:03Speaker 2: a check her out. Three stars for a bunch of
- 3:06Speaker 2: TRISTI the.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Surfer, I Sean, I just want you to know I
- 3:11Speaker 4: saw your list for the Surfer, and I thought I
- 3:12Speaker 4: gotta watch the trailer and I just watched.
- 3:14Speaker 3: It with no sound while you're where you were speaking.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Okay, I'm I'm I'm excited.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Okay, it looks like well and and there's one reason
- 3:23Speaker 2: to see this, and we'll get to that in a second.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Here this is this is a psychological drama about a
- 3:28Speaker 2: man who's returned to Australia to buy the house that
- 3:30Speaker 2: overlooks the sea where he grew up and learned how
- 3:32Speaker 2: to surf. Okay, but he gets there with his teen
- 3:34Speaker 2: son to go surfing and like like like his old
- 3:37Speaker 2: man did for with him.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But they get there and the locals start harassing him.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So don't live ahead down south Hia. That's it with
- 3:44Speaker 2: an Australian accent.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So it's har.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And and so this this guy's ready determined to buy
- 3:49Speaker 2: the house. It's already taken a toll on his life
- 3:52Speaker 2: and these these locals are the last straw. So he
- 3:54Speaker 2: does some dumb things on the way to this realization
- 3:56Speaker 2: and ends up without his car, without his phone, without
- 3:58Speaker 2: his shoes, and and the guy who leaves the locals
- 4:04Speaker 2: is like this guru type and becomes a battle Will's now,
- 4:08Speaker 2: not all of this makes a lot of sense. It's
- 4:10Speaker 2: more of a gut feeling. The sun is beating down,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the heat is getting to his brain, and you figure
- 4:17Speaker 2: out very pretty quickly. Making sense does not really the
- 4:19Speaker 2: most important part of this movie, because the guy we
- 4:22Speaker 2: haven't said this yet.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Is Nicholas Cage. Of course, is it?
- 4:26Speaker 2: So you're in a Nicholas Cage movie.
- 4:29Speaker 4: You know, it looks, it looks like and it's it
- 4:32Speaker 4: looks intense and terrifying but on a sunny beach.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah it is. It is all those things.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Uh, very psychedelic sort of psychological drama here. The guru
- 4:41Speaker 2: is played by Julian McMahon, who you'll remember from Nip,
- 4:44Speaker 2: Tuck and Carry will remember as Victor von Doom.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yes, good looking guy. Three stars for the surfer.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's basically you go for Nicholas Cage and and because
- 4:56Speaker 2: you know he he chooses the scenery like nobody's business.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But it's supposed to be really enigmatic. They're saying, don't
- 5:03Speaker 1: buy the house. Did they ever explain.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Why it's it's some things are explaining, some things are
- 5:09Speaker 2: just sort of left there.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Just just based on his facial expressions from the trailer
- 5:14Speaker 4: I watched with no sound.
- 5:15Speaker 3: It'll be worth your yes, all right, so three stars.
- 5:17Speaker 2: That's It's at the Broadway and a few other places,
- 5:19Speaker 2: all right. Thunderbolts. Thunderbolts first weekend of the summer movie season.
- 5:23Speaker 2: It's first, you know, first weekend in May. Uh, Thunderbolts
- 5:26Speaker 2: is It's been called MCU's version of Suicide Squad.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think that does this movie.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Kind of a disservice, because I agree this one has
- 5:34Speaker 2: some depth to it. We we get to see, uh,
- 5:37Speaker 2: some of Marvel's mightiest anti heroes, most of them we've
- 5:41Speaker 2: seen before.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Are we Uh. We got Eulena.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Banova played by uh Florence Lawrence Pugh Blackwood, a sister
- 5:49Speaker 2: Red Guardian who's the Russian Captain America played by David Harbor.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Bucky Barnes is back. He's He's in Congress.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Bucky Barnes is in Congress now, Congressman Congressman Barnes. Sebastian
- 5:59Speaker 2: State mentioned that at the end of the Captain America movie,
- 6:02Speaker 2: we've got John Walker, the fake Captain America played by
- 6:05Speaker 2: Wyatt Russell, US agent, the US agent.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yes, they never actually say that name. They don't know.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I wonder if there's a copyright.
- 6:11Speaker 2: They mentioned it in the in the TV series Ghost
- 6:15Speaker 2: who shifts through Walls. She was in the Anna or
- 6:18Speaker 2: the Wats played by Hanna John Cayman, so on. And
- 6:20Speaker 2: so they're working off the books for the chief of
- 6:23Speaker 2: the c I A who we've also met before. That's
- 6:26Speaker 2: Valentina Allegra Dafontaine played by Julia Luis Dreyfus.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Who's very who does bad guy really well excellent? Uh
- 6:34Speaker 3: she she she.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Is in the middle of destroyed. She's in the middle
- 6:37Speaker 2: of of impeachment hearings. So she's busy having all the
- 6:40Speaker 2: evidence destroyed for black Ops. And of course some of
- 6:42Speaker 2: that evidence is our guy, our people, yes, especially US
- 6:46Speaker 2: agents especially.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So they they they are all sent to the same
- 6:49Speaker 2: spot to uh on orders to kill somebody else in
- 6:53Speaker 2: the group and then also get locked in. And you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: they figure this out and they figure they have to
- 6:59Speaker 2: sort of work together to save their own next and
- 7:02Speaker 2: then stop Valentina. They also meet another character called Bob
- 7:07Speaker 2: played by Lewis Pullman.
- 7:08Speaker 3: We are going we are going to discuss spop.
- 7:10Speaker 4: We're not.
- 7:10Speaker 3: We're not going to discuss because things things happen with.
- 7:13Speaker 2: He is in the comics, Yes he is, but but
- 7:15Speaker 2: we don't we don't know that yet, okay, and we're
- 7:18Speaker 2: not going to spoil it.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Deeply psychological stuff.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, this is one of the better MC movies in
- 7:25Speaker 2: a while. It's it's because it's got some flashes of
- 7:27Speaker 2: darkness to it because.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Of that deeply psychological stuff.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Also deeply the the since we're dealing you know, it
- 7:35Speaker 2: can get kind of boring listening to Captain America talking
- 7:38Speaker 2: about his problems because he doesn't have any. Uh, these guys,
- 7:43Speaker 2: these guys got problems, they got they got issues, and
- 7:46Speaker 2: so they get into this movie gets into that some
- 7:50Speaker 2: and and as these bad guys figure out maybe they're
- 7:52Speaker 2: not so bad after all that, they can you know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: maybe maybe you know, redeem themselves somehow. Great cast Florence
- 8:01Speaker 2: Pugh especially, and she takes and she takes it, takes
- 8:04Speaker 2: pretty much the lead in this thing. Yes, she I
- 8:06Speaker 2: love her, She's she's great and she really carries the
- 8:10Speaker 2: emotional emotional line here. Three and a half. All right,
- 8:14Speaker 2: And and you notice that the title Thunderbolts with an asterisk.
- 8:19Speaker 3: That's explained.
- 8:21Speaker 2: We get that at the end, we get the explanation
- 8:23Speaker 2: of what that's about.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And there are cutscenes there. There's there's a couple of
- 8:26Speaker 3: cut scenes. Yeah, all right, okay, stay through the credits.
- 8:29Speaker 2: But but remember cut scenes have I I've decided cut
- 8:32Speaker 2: scenes are the worst things about these movies now because
- 8:35Speaker 2: they don't let you actually enjoy the movie you just saw,
- 8:38Speaker 2: but make you think about the next movie. And it's
- 8:41Speaker 2: the Stanley philosophy of that last page has to hook
- 8:43Speaker 2: you to buy the next comic. Yeah, but but but
- 8:47Speaker 2: then you've forgotten about how good the movie was you
- 8:48Speaker 2: just saw.
- 8:49Speaker 1: So all right, all right, so that's for a half
- 8:53Speaker 1: and a half, three and a half and explaining everywhere
- 8:55Speaker 1: it is everywhere you can't avoid it. Yeah, And what
- 8:58Speaker 1: what is next week?
- 8:59Speaker 3: Next week?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Not a lot because nobody wants to compete with the
- 9:03Speaker 2: second weekend the Thunderbolts. Yeah, uh, there is there is
- 9:06Speaker 2: a there is a movie with Kerrie Washington, The Shadow Force,
- 9:12Speaker 2: that's really about it there, and there might be a
- 9:14Speaker 2: couple of small, small art house things.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But there's not a lot going on next week, all.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Right, Sean means you can find his reviews at moviecricket
- 9:23Speaker 1: dot net and of course his work at the Salt
- 9:26Speaker 1: Lake Tribune sltrib dot com.
- 9:28Speaker 3: All right, thank you very much, Sean
