- 0:00Continuing in chapter 10, God's glory departs from the temple.
- 0:05I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne of lapis lazuli
- 0:10above the vault that was over the heads of the cherubim.
- 0:14The Lord said to the man clothed in linen.
- 0:18Go in among the wheels beneath the cherubim.
- 0:21Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim
- 0:25and scatter them over the city. And as I watched, he went in.
- 0:30Now the cherubim were standing on the South side of the temple
- 0:33when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court.
- 0:38Then the glory of the Lord rose from above the cherubim and
- 0:42moved to the threshold of the temple.
- 0:45The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the
- 0:49radiance of the glory of the Lord.
- 0:52The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far
- 0:56away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when
- 1:00He speaks. When the Lord commanded the man
- 1:02in linen take fire from among the wheels from among the
- 1:06cherubim, the man went in and stood beside a wheel.
- 1:12Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire that
- 1:16was among them. He took up some of it and put it
- 1:20in the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out.
- 1:26Then it says in parentheses under the wings of the cherubim
- 1:30could be seen what looked like human hands.
- 1:34I looked and I saw beside the cherubim 4 wheels, one beside
- 1:39each of the cherubim. The wheels sparkled like Topaz.
- 1:43As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike.
- 1:46Each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel.
- 1:50As they moved. They would go in any one of the
- 1:54four directions the cherubim faced.
- 1:57The wheels did not turn about as the cherubim went.
- 2:02The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced without
- 2:07turning as they went. Their entire bodies, including
- 2:11their backs, their hands, and their wings were completely full
- 2:16of eyes, as were their four wheels.
- 2:20I heard the wheels being called the whirling wheels.
- 2:25Each of the cherubim had four faces.
- 2:28One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human
- 2:33being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of
- 2:38an eagle. Then the cherubim rose upward.
- 2:42These were the living creatures I had seen by the Kiba River.
- 2:47Then the cherubim moved, or when the cherubim moved, the wheels
- 2:51besides them moved, and when the cherubim spread their wings to
- 2:55rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side.
- 3:00When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still, and when
- 3:05the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of
- 3:10the living creatures was in them.
- 3:13Then the the glory of the Lord departed from over the threshold
- 3:17of the temple and stopped above the cherubim.
- 3:21While I watched. The cherubim spread their wings
- 3:24and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with
- 3:29them. They stopped at the entrance of
- 3:31the east gate of the Lord's house, and the glory of the God
- 3:35of Israel was above them. These were the living creatures
- 3:39I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kibar river, and I
- 3:44realized that they were cherubim.
- 3:48Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was
- 3:52what looked like human hands. Their faces had the same
- 3:56appearance as those I had seen by the Khabar River.
- 4:01Each one went straight ahead. So that was Ezekiel's.
- 4:06He was referring back to his first vision where he saw these
- 4:10these beings and he's describing them exactly like he had seen
- 4:14them before. Well, I mean, maybe not exactly
- 4:18like there's some differences that I noticed in here before
- 4:22they had like before he was describing the wheels as having
- 4:27eyes all over them. But then in verse 12, it says
- 4:32their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands, their
- 4:35wings were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels.
- 4:41So that's a little bit different than the way he described.
- 4:43Maybe he left off that detail of them having eyes all over them
- 4:47before. And and again, we don't know if
- 4:53these are literal beings or if they, I mean, if they're, they
- 5:00could be literal beings, they could be symbolic in a vision.
- 5:06But it's interesting. He saw very similar things twice
- 5:10in his vision. So again, or they could be both.
- 5:15They could actually be a literal thing.
- 5:17Just because we haven't seen it doesn't mean that it doesn't
- 5:20exist because these were described in the throne room of
- 5:24God. And it, it could, I mean, who's
- 5:29to say we, we're not going to know until someday when we see
- 5:34it for ourselves. But it kind of, it doesn't
- 5:37really matter except that there's, there's another detail
- 5:42here on the cherubim. They each had different faces.
- 5:46So in the 1st chapter of Ezekiel, his first vision, he
- 5:50said it was an ox, a human, a lion and an eagle.
- 5:54In this chapter 10, he says they have a face of a cherub, human,
- 5:59lion, and eagle. So 3, the human, lion and eagle
- 6:03are all the same. Now the other question is if
- 6:06they are, you know, there's so many unanswered questions that
- 6:10we could have about this, like #1 is, is this to be taken
- 6:16literally? Do they really look like this?
- 6:19Or are all of these things given as a symbolism to something
- 6:24else, Whatever they are or were, they were connected with God and
- 6:32they had a job to do and God commanded them.
- 6:36And they also had like a, they were fiery beings.
- 6:40So they had coals and they had these like they had fire within
- 6:43them. So they are just something
- 6:46something we've probably have never seen before.
- 6:49And with everything that God creates, you know, I'm not going
- 6:53to say that those don't exist because he's, he's seen them
- 6:56twice. You know, maybe they are
- 6:58symbolic or maybe they are real, or maybe they are both.
- 7:03Maybe they are created like so many things that God has within
- 7:08the Bible, and he's revealed that these literal things have
- 7:13symbolic significance. So there could be both a literal
- 7:17little entity and he called them creatures that were surrounding
- 7:22the throne of God. So they could be both.
- 7:25And it's kind of, I don't know, there's nowhere else in the
- 7:29Bible that tells us about this. So it's only speculation of what
- 7:34we would tend to believe for each of these things.
- 7:37But it is interesting and it made me think about when I when
- 7:42I noticed that in chapter 10 it says the faces were cherub,
- 7:47human, lion and eagle. And I remembered from the first
- 7:52chapter that it was an I, an ox, human, lion, and eagle.
- 7:57And so I wondered, is that a translation error?
- 8:00And so I went to blueletterbible.org and I looked
- 8:03up the verse and it shows cherub in the NIV version at least.
- 8:09And I didn't find it listed any other way because I was curious.
- 8:13I was like, was that just a, an error or does the actual Hebrew
- 8:17writing look like the other word?
- 8:20Like does cherub look like ox or something?
- 8:24Why does it why does he describe the, the cherubim that they have
- 8:32a cherub as their face? Like it's just describe.
- 8:35I don't know that that just didn't make a lot of sense.
- 8:38But the first chapter said it was an ox.
- 8:41And then of course, my mind's going to wander and and I just
- 8:46was curious because I do have a theory that some of the these
- 8:52ancient religions actually worshipped fallen angels.
- 8:57And if God created something that looked like the cherubim.
- 9:00OK, so this is speculation. It's just, it's kind of like
- 9:04logic. If then, OK, so if God created
- 9:07these beings and these beings truly did look like this and
- 9:11they were what Ezekiel identified as cherubim, they're
- 9:15something that are in the presence of God and these were
- 9:20obedient to God. But this is speculation.
- 9:25Could there be others who are disobedient to God that actually
- 9:29came to earth and rebelled against God and wanted to be
- 9:34worshipped just like the Bible tells us Satan did.
- 9:37Satan wanted to be worshipped. So out of curiosity, I looked, I
- 9:43just, you know, searched the question.
- 9:45Which ancient gods had the face of a bull?
- 9:49This is kind of interesting. So several ancient gods and
- 9:52figures were depicted with bullheads or strong bull
- 9:56associations, most notably the Phoenician Canaanite deity Baal
- 10:03or Baal or however you say it, or Haddad.
- 10:07There's so many different names for like the same entity,
- 10:10sometimes shown with a bull's head on a man's body.
- 10:14I also saw a depiction of Molech that looked like that too.
- 10:18And so I wonder if there's just a whole bunch of names for the
- 10:21same thing, or if there are these different entities that
- 10:24are being worshipped. It says and the Mesopotamium
- 10:31protective spirit Lamasu, which features a bulls body with the
- 10:36human head and sometimes bullhorns.
- 10:39The famous Minotaur from Greek myth had a bulls head on a man's
- 10:43body but was a monster, not a God.
- 10:47Surprise surprise though tied to bull worship in Crete, Egyptian
- 10:52gods like APIs and Buchus were sacred bulls, embodying deities
- 10:58like TA, Armant, and even the Greek God Dionysus was sometimes
- 11:05depicted with bull horns. So you have Baal, often depicted
- 11:10as a powerful man with the bull's head symbolizing strength
- 11:13and kingship linked to the storm God Haddad.
- 11:18And then La Masu is Mesopotamium and its protective deities, with
- 11:24a human head, bulls body and eagles wings, sometimes with
- 11:28bulls horns guarding entrances. And then the Minotaur Greek, a
- 11:33creature, a man's body, bull's head borne from Crete, a monster
- 11:39hidden in a labyrinth representing potent bull
- 11:43symbolism. Then you have Dionysus, Greek
- 11:46associated with the bulls, sometimes shown with bull horns
- 11:49representing fertility and wild power, and APIs and Buchus,
- 11:54Egyptian sacred bulls revered as living embodiments of the gods
- 12:00TA and Mont and other bull related deities or concept
- 12:05Molech. Later portrayals influenced by
- 12:08the Minotaur legend often show this deity as a bull headed idol
- 12:12for child sacrifice. Then Lamu and Sulabha, Sumerian
- 12:18cattle gods, though not always depicted with bull hands in
- 12:22iconic in iconography. So there is something about the
- 12:29bull and whether it's literal or just is it just a coincidence
- 12:34that all of these different ancient areas started
- 12:39worshipping something that looked like a bull?
- 12:42It's just, I don't know, I don't have the answer, but it just
- 12:46brings about that question. So then the other question I had
- 12:53was when we talk about cherubs, a lot of times we'll see cherubs
- 12:57or, you know, people will describe the things like that
- 13:00are associated with Valentine's Day as cherubs, these little
- 13:04chubby little angels that, you know, have these arrows and
- 13:08wings and they, you know, it's all about love.
- 13:12And so I, I was just curious like if, if we know the biblical
- 13:18description of a cherub, Cherubim, plural from Ezekiel's
- 13:22vision, they have four faces, a human, a lion, an ox and an
- 13:28eagle. And they have 4 wings, 2 wings
- 13:31stretch upwards while the other two cover their bodies.
- 13:35They have a a body. They have human hands under the
- 13:38wing. They have straight legs with
- 13:40feet like polished brass calves and are full of eyes and their
- 13:47movement are like flashes of lightning with wheels within
- 13:51wheels that move with them. They are powerful, fiery and
- 13:56fearsome, guarding sacred places like Eden.
- 14:02And so then when you get into artistic and popular cherubs,
- 14:07their appearance, they are depicted as plump infants are
- 14:10toddlers like babies with wings, and they represent innocence,
- 14:14purity and love often associated with Cupid.
- 14:19The childlike image comes from a folk etymology linking cherub to
- 14:25like a child, a concept later challenged by biblical
- 14:30descriptions. So it I, I just wondered like
- 14:35who started illustrating cherubs like babies?
- 14:39That's what I was wondering because like the Bible, this was
- 14:43written in, you know, the what, 500 something BC when Ezekiel
- 14:49was written. So this has been around for
- 14:51quite a while. And where did we ever who
- 14:53started this? Actually it looks like the book
- 14:57The Book of Ezekiel was written 571 BC.
- 15:01So I was wondering who came up with this depiction of cherubs
- 15:05that are what we see today as Valentine's Day and how did that
- 15:08all happen? So I just searched who started
- 15:13illustrating cherubs like babies?
- 15:15Italian Renaissance artist Raphael Rafaelo Sanzio
- 15:21popularized the iconic image of cherubs as chubby baby like
- 15:26figures called puti in paintings like the Sistine Madonna around
- 15:331512 to 1514. This is AD SO15-O gosh, no, 2000
- 15:42years later, they are portraying these beings with the same name.
- 15:47Like why not just give them a different name?
- 15:50Why call them something that's in the Bible already that's
- 15:53already documented? Or in the, you know, the book of
- 15:55Ezekiel, it's already documented what they look like.
- 15:58Why use the same name but make them look something different
- 16:03than the way they're described in the Bible?
- 16:05Because the way they were described in the Bible was the
- 16:07way they were described first. So what would make someone do
- 16:11that? It said, though the sculptor
- 16:14Donatello had reintroduced the Pluto motive into Christian art
- 16:21earlier, blending classical figures with religious themes
- 16:25leading to this common visual tradition, the classic roots.
- 16:30The idea comes from the Greco Roman figures like Eros or
- 16:34Cupid, often depicted as winged infants representing love or
- 16:39spirits. Well, maybe the spirit part is
- 16:41right, but I don't know. Donatello early 15th century
- 16:46reintroduced these winged children puti into Christian
- 16:50context, associating them with playful spirits or Spiritelli,
- 16:55setting the stage for later artist.
- 16:57And then Rafael, early 16th century, famous for the two
- 17:01iconic cherubs at the bottom of the Sistine Madonna, inspired by
- 17:06children he saw making the chubby winged baby image
- 17:10ubiquitous in Western art. And then Raphael's immense
- 17:16popularity spread this depiction, and artists like
- 17:19Andre Montanaga, Paglio Vernosi and Anthony Van Dyke continued
- 17:26to use them, often as background elements or Halos, linking them
- 17:31to divinity. Divinity In essence Raphael
- 17:36solidified the image, but the groundwork for blending
- 17:38classical Pootie with cherubic rolls was laid by Donatello and
- 17:46other Renaissance artists. So it essentially 2000 years
- 17:52after they were documented they became very different looking.
- 17:56Which then brings me to question, why not?
- 18:01Why? But God made 10 commandments and
- 18:06in Exodus 20 verse four he said you shall not make for yourself
- 18:12an image in the form of anything in heaven above or in the earth
- 18:17beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them
- 18:21or worship them. For I the Lord your God, am a
- 18:24jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of their
- 18:27parents to the third and 4th generation of those who hate me,
- 18:31but showing love to 1000 generations of those who love me
- 18:35and keep my commandments. So that was like the second
- 18:42commandment that God gave. And when I think about these
- 18:48idols that were created, I mean that that is like one of the
- 18:52top, the first things that God said.
- 18:54I mean, the first thing he said was you have no, you shall have
- 18:57no other gods before me. And then he says, don't even
- 18:59make an image of anything that you're going to worship.
- 19:02Not that these cherubs were being worshipped, but these
- 19:07other gods, these deities that had these bull faces or bull
- 19:11bodies or something that all these different ancient
- 19:16civilizations did worship and they had depictions of them on
- 19:20walls. And so they were creating images
- 19:23of these things. And we know that in the very end
- 19:26times, there's also going to be some image that the false
- 19:30prophet is going to give the ability to speak to and that is
- 19:35going to enforce this mark of the beast.
- 19:38We were talking about marks in Chapter 9.
- 19:41The mark, you know, sometimes God did it, but then God's enemy
- 19:45does it too. And so I, I just, you know, it's
- 19:50like if we would read the Bible, if we would study the Bible and
- 19:54we would have obeyed the Bible. You know, all these years ago,
- 19:59God said, you know, you shall not do this.
- 20:03And I don't think it was to limit us as much.
- 20:07It was to protect us, protect us from harm, because.
- 20:13If we are worshipping other things or entities other than
- 20:17God, it's going to lead us to destruction.
- 20:20That's how God's protecting us. He doesn't want us to be led to
- 20:24destruction. But if we are doing that, we are
- 20:27going to be led to destruction. So the only one that we should
- 20:30worship is God. And and then that brings about
- 20:34like what is really considered worship?
- 20:37What does that mean? And so I just like, What does
- 20:41worship mean? Worship means showing deep
- 20:44reverence, honor, and devotion to someone or something
- 20:49considered divine, sacred, or worthy, often involving acts of
- 20:54praise, prayer, and ritual, but also extending to everyday
- 20:59actions that express profound respect or adoration, like
- 21:04bowing down or dedicating one's life to a higher power or ideal.
- 21:11The term comes from worth ship, meaning to ascribe worth or
- 21:16value. So the key aspects of worship,
- 21:20and I think these are good just to think about so that we don't
- 21:25worship things other than God. But here are the key aspects of
- 21:29worship. Honoring a divine being.
- 21:32The most common meaning involves revering a deity, God, or gods
- 21:38through prayer, hymns, offerings, and sacred
- 21:41ceremonies. So if we're doing sacred
- 21:44ceremonies for anything other than God, then we're worshipping
- 21:49something else, showing extreme respect.
- 21:53It can also describe intense admiration or devotion to a
- 21:58person or thing like a celebrity worshipped by by fans.
- 22:04So that is also something that people today could do.
- 22:08There's a lot of celebrities that people do worship.
- 22:15I mean, they, they just, they kind of lose their minds around
- 22:19these people and think of them as something greater than what
- 22:22they are. Just like realizing that they're
- 22:24human beings just like all of us.
- 22:26They do have talent, but that's about, you know, the difference
- 22:31that they, you know, have a talent that God gave them.
- 22:34So but just I guess that's another thing that is a
- 22:41checkpoint with us that we're not, you know, it could be
- 22:44athletes too. We could worship an athlete
- 22:47because of their ability, but we have to be careful that we don't
- 22:51put them on. They don't becomes like so
- 22:55important to us where they're more important than than God.
- 23:01Even even a relationship, even a family member, it can be all
- 23:06sorts of different people or things that we could start
- 23:12giving more reverence to than we give reverence to God.
- 23:15We have to make sure that we're giving God the ultimate
- 23:18reverence. And I think that's something
- 23:20that we can all check ourselves on because I don't know if we
- 23:23all give God enough credit for and, and worship for all that he
- 23:29has done. Because I don't know how often
- 23:31we really think about what God has done for us.
- 23:34Like what that truly means that God saved us from that God saved
- 23:40us from eternal separation from him.
- 23:42And not only that, but he promised us an inheritance.
- 23:46And with, with his Son Jesus, I mean that we are going to be in
- 23:51the presence of God, living and interacting and, you know,
- 23:54sharing life together in person with God.
- 24:00And we could never make it there by ourselves.
- 24:03And, and if we just like just stop and think about that, like
- 24:07how, how much love that was for God.
- 24:11And it says the greatest, there's no greater love than to
- 24:15lay one's life down for another. And that's what Jesus did for
- 24:18us. He laid his life down so that we
- 24:21could enjoy the Kingdom, the Kingdom of God.
- 24:27And that just gives some time to think about that.
- 24:31And, and it you just realize, like anything else that we
- 24:34worship, are they going to be giving us the Kingdom of God?
- 24:38Are they going to be giving us eternal life?
- 24:41Are they going to wipe away all of our tears?
- 24:44Are they going to be bringing us together with others that love
- 24:50God? I mean, they're they're it's
- 24:52just incomparable. There's no way that anything
- 24:55else can do what God can do. And maybe because we don't see
- 25:01feel or we don't like, he's not like present that we don't have
- 25:11that ongoing thought of him because it is something like he
- 25:17is in the heavenly realms and he is, although he is present, he's
- 25:22not physically present right now.
- 25:24And I think sometimes when we physically see someone, it does
- 25:27make a difference. You can still love someone from
- 25:29a distance, but it does, it makes it easier to love somebody
- 25:34that you actually see. But we just, so I think that's
- 25:39why we all have to keep ourselves in check, you know,
- 25:43just to keep reminding ourselves of who God is and what he's done
- 25:47for us and not to forget him. That's often when he tells the
- 25:49people of Israel, you know, that they're going to forget him and,
- 25:53and it shows that that really did happen.
- 25:57So there's other things about worship.
- 25:58It says actions and intent. Worship encompasses both
- 26:01internal feelings, love, awe, submission, and external acts,
- 26:08bowing, easing, serving that express, express this
- 26:14worthiness. So are we doing that for God?
- 26:17Are we showing Him love? Are we, you know, in awe of
- 26:21everything that he's created and are we submitted to him?
- 26:24Is he our Lord? That's how we worship Him And
- 26:29external do we bow and praise and serve Him?
- 26:32Are our lives, Are we serving God in our life?
- 26:36I mean, that's a form of worship.
- 26:38And if we're not serving God, who are we serving?
- 26:42In biblical roots in Hebrew and Greek, words for worship often
- 26:46mean to bow down, to prostate oneself, or to kiss the ground,
- 26:50signifying humility and homage beyond ritual.
- 26:56Modern understanding often includes living a life that
- 26:59reflects this devotion, such as showing love to others or
- 27:03appreciating nature as acts of worship.
- 27:06Now that's where we have to be careful is we can appreciate
- 27:10nature because nature is beautiful, but we don't worship
- 27:14it. And there are some people in the
- 27:17world who do worship nature and they even talk like Mother earth
- 27:22and stuff like that, like give personification to the creation
- 27:27that God has created. We have to remember that, you
- 27:29know, this, all of this, it is beautiful, but God created it.
- 27:34There's a creator behind that. It's not you don't worship the
- 27:39the you know the book, but you worship the author and of you
- 27:44know meaning God God's word. So in different contexts,
- 27:48Christianity attributing honor to God expressed through
- 27:52scripture, praise, prayer and obedience.
- 27:56In Islam on internal and external deeds pleasing to
- 28:01Allah, including rituals and obedience to his will.
- 28:05And Hinduism, devotional love, Bakati or bhakti directed
- 28:11towards deities, often through rituals and prayers.
- 28:14So there's a lot of different ways that people worship, but it
- 28:18does seem like obedience is there, prayer is there and
- 28:21there's a reverence and we just have to make sure that it's to
- 28:26God, to the one true God, the the God of Abraham, Isaac and
- 28:34Jacob and his son Jesus who has given us salvation.
- 28:40So anyway, that is about, oh, actually in verse, not verse,
- 28:46but chapter 10. I did not read the questions and
- 28:50answers from the study Bible. So I'll read that and then I
- 28:53will wrap this chapter up. So why did God want burning
- 28:57coals scattered over the city? Fire is usually a symbol of
- 29:00God's judgement against evil. The burning coals represent
- 29:05divine judgement against Jerusalem.
- 29:09What would a wheel intersecting a wheel look like?
- 29:11This was Ezekiel's description of God's royal chariot with all
- 29:16of his attending angels. It was quite a sight, as one
- 29:20might expect. The description of a wheel
- 29:23within a wheel mostly has to do with the ability of the chariot
- 29:26to go neither forward, backward or sideways with no need to turn
- 29:30the chariot so the wheels intersect one another at 90°
- 29:34angles. Why were the cherubim covered
- 29:37with eyes? As with the first vision, the
- 29:41numerous eyes represent the all seeing nature of God.
- 29:45Nothing, even those done those things done in secret, can be
- 29:49hidden from God. Why were the wheels called the
- 29:53whirling wheels? This name, as well as the
- 29:55depiction of a wheel intersecting a wheel, suggests
- 29:58God's constant motion. He is active and moving.
- 30:03Why did Ezekiel call these creatures cherubim?
- 30:06Ezekiel called the creatures cherubim to draw the association
- 30:09between them to the presence of God.
- 30:12God's throne was above and between the cherubim on the ark
- 30:17from Exodus chapter 25. The temple was filled with
- 30:20carvings of cherubim in First Kings chapter 6 and God is
- 30:25frequently seen in the Old Testament as being carried by
- 30:29cherubim in Psalm 18 verse 10. The message is this, God is on
- 30:35the move and that's the end of chapter 10.
- 30:39So if you have not subscribed to this channel, please do so and
- 30:44come back. I try to do a chapter a day from
- 30:46the Bible to stay in the Word and stay close to God.
- 30:49So hope you join again. Thank you.
