Speaker 1: So here's what we're going to do.
• 0:56
Speaker 1: We're going to start off with our Mars driving destinations and we did this because we ran out of time in a segment that we did.
• 1:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, a little glitch this morning.
• 1:08
  Speaker 1: Well, we didn't.
• 1:09
Speaker 2: One of our guests did.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Well, that's okay, we had a glitch.
• 1:11
  Speaker 1: It worked.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: It did work out okay.
• 1:13
Speaker 1: It kind of added to the suspense of this show like it normally does.
• 1:19
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: Mr Mars driving destinations, sir.
• 1:22
Speaker 3: So I got to thinking Labor Day is coming up and we've started watching the Gulf, looking for the hurricanes, because of the weather, because of where we're located at.
• 1:28
Speaker 3: And I got to thinking well, you know, everybody can go off to San Antonio or Dallas or Waco, any place north.
• 1:34
Speaker 3: Just go find some place.
• 1:35
Speaker 3: And I've done that a couple of times with the wife and the kids and the dogs and the cats loaded up into a Motel 6 because that's the only place that would take the pets, and it was not a lot of fun.
• 1:45
Speaker 3: So I was thinking about what else you could do and then so I thought some of the other places you could go that you might could make a little bit of a road trip in a hurricane out of it, somehow the hurricane blew in, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:58
Speaker 3: So go up into the Lukenbach and the Fredericksburg area.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: You know you can go find you some hill country bed and breakfasts or you can get some cabins.
• 2:06
Speaker 3: Lukenbach actually has cabins on a little creek across from the post office thing.
• 2:11
Speaker 3: You can go to the Lukenbach Dance Hall Been there, yeah, been there.
• 2:17
Speaker 3: And you can also go up to Fredericksburg.
• 2:19
Speaker 3: It's right next door with the wineries, beer gardens, the National Museum of the Pacific War and lots of boutiques.
• 2:26
Speaker 3: Then, if you're looking for something a little bit more to the north, go to Wimberley, which is another artsy small town, and you can stay in the river cabins that they have there or the Wimberley Inn.
• 2:36
Speaker 3: They've got the Wimberley Glassworks Studio.
• 2:39
Speaker 3: You've got places to go swimming, like the Blue Hole or Jacob's Well, and then you could also go through the Wimberley Valley Winery to get wound up at the end of the day.
• 2:49
Speaker 3: The other place a little bit more to the east is Jefferson.
• 2:53
Speaker 3: Now you can stay at the Jefferson Hotel here, and this is famous for being haunted.
• 2:57
Speaker 3: Jefferson's considered one of the most haunted towns in Texas.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: I did not know that, did not Got plenty of antique shopping.
• 3:03
Speaker 3: You've got a train, the Jefferson Railway They'll take you out through the Piney Woods, got a bayou riverboat tour.
• 3:09
Speaker 3: They even have a Gone with the Wind museum there.
• 3:14
Speaker 3: That I did not know.
• 3:15
Speaker 3: Then you can also go a little bit more centralized Go to Tyler.
• 3:21
Speaker 3: It's in East Texas but it's known as the Rose Capital.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: Got a lot of stuff for evacuees.
• 3:28
Speaker 3: You can go to the Tyler Rose Garden.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: They got a zoo.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: They got lakes to go and play, with Plenty of hotels medical facilities and restaurants.
• 3:38
  Speaker 3: I don't believe I've ever played with a lake.
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Have you Well play in.
• 3:40
Speaker 3: I've played a lot of other things.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: A town I really like and my wife loves it, is Nacogdoches.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: Now, it's not really that far north, but it is farther north, got its historic and charming.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: It's actually the oldest town in Texas, nacogdoches.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: Nacogdoches I knew that Got brick paved downtown, got plenty of museums.
• 4:02
Speaker 3: Rick Pave downtown got plenty of museums.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Stephen F Austin is there.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: They got trails to go hiking in if you want to get out and about.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: They don't have that many hotels there because it's not that big of a town.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: It is a college town so you got to make your reservations here.
• 4:12
Speaker 3: But it's a real nice place to go visit If you want to do something more with the kids.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: Glen Rose is another small town.
• 4:18
Speaker 3: Now this is home of the Dinosaur Valley State Park.
• 4:22
Speaker 3: There's actually fossilized dinosaur tracks that you can go down through the riverbeds and check out.
• 4:26
Speaker 3: But here if you're an evacuee, you don't have to necessarily stay in a hotel.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: You can camp, you can hike, you can go, do all kinds of things in that area.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: And the last one I wanted to bring up was Bandera.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: Now this is a little more west.
• 4:39
Speaker 3: If you're going out towards San Antonio, you want to go a little more west.
• 4:42
Speaker 3: This is the cowboy capital of the world.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: This is a place for rodeo fans, western culture lovers One of the things that I liked whenever we've been there before along with their museums and the cowboy look to it and everything.
• 4:55
Speaker 3: It's very hilly there, the entrance to the stores and stuff and the bar right behind where these cowboys are riding down Main Street.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: You actually have to go downstairs down the side of the hill and the bar and everything's down below and it's kind of like going to a speakeasy, right.
• 5:11
Speaker 3: So there's just be a few places that you could go if you're going to evacuate and maybe have a little more fun than a Motel 6 in San Antonio.
• 5:19
  Speaker 3: There you go.
• 5:20
  Speaker 2: Nice Evacuate.
• 5:24
Speaker 3: God, I hope we don't ever have to do that again.
• 5:27
  Speaker 2: It's tough.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Our story of the week.
• 5:29

• 5:46
Speaker 1: The number of vehicles shipped with digital key features will almost quadruple to more than 59 million by 2031, up from 15 million in 2023, according to a December 24 report from ABI Research.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: Siemens debuted a precursor to today's digital key in the 1990s.
• 6:08
  Speaker 1: It was a Mercedes-Benz.
• 6:09
Speaker 1: I remember having one back when we used to get Mercedes-Benz in the press fleet.
• 6:15
  Speaker 1: Really cool.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: It looked like this particular thing, looked like a credit card.
• 6:20
Speaker 1: You put it in your wallet.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: That's all you got to do, and it did everything.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: In 2018, bmw launched a smartphone basedbased digital key using near-field communication technology called NFC, near-field communication, allowing drivers to unlock and start their cars without a physical fob.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Since then, the technology has continued to expand across the luxury auto market the luxury auto market, with many luxury brands offering digital key capabilities through apps, smartphone wallets and other connected devices, such as the Apple Watch.
• 6:52
Speaker 1: One feature automakers offer is the ability to share the digital key with friends or family, or even connect the key to a smart home to activate the garage door, the Amazon delivery guy can leave the package in the trunk of the car instead of in the front of the door of your house by getting access to the trunk at the right time, making deliveries a bit more secure.
• 7:16
Speaker 1: Experts say digital keys go beyond the convenience of automatically unlocking a vehicle.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: A digital key radically increases customer loyalty to the vehicle companion app.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: Gartner vice president of research, pedro Pacheco, said Most people don't find the digital devices very useful, but they do understand the benefit of a digital key and they use it.
• 7:39
Speaker 1: He said automakers, including Tesla, bmw and Hyundai, all quickly realized that a digital key was a way to keep the company app installed on drivers' smartphones.
• 7:48
Speaker 1: Some automakers offer expanded digital key functionality.
• 7:52
Speaker 1: For example, tesla's digital key will also automatically open the trunk or the frunk, depending on where you're standing.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: He said Another benefit is cost savings for the automaker and the vehicle owner.
• 8:05
Speaker 1: So, in other words, forget the fob, you just do it on your phone, so you don't have to have two things.
• 8:11
Speaker 1: The update, which simplifies the smartphone-based key setup process, will extend to several additional models in July and August, according to the company.
• 8:18
Speaker 1: Revised system introduces a setup card which allows users to initiate the digital key pairing process by scanning a QR code or tapping the card to a supported smartphone.
• 8:30
Speaker 1: Once activated, the digital key can be shared with up to 18 devices.
• 8:34
Speaker 1: Owners can assign different levels of access and permissions to each user, including restrictions on acceleration and top speed, features aimed at use cases such as novice drivers, kids going off to school, et cetera.
• 8:47
Speaker 1: For all vehicles underpinned by BMW's forthcoming new class architecture, the company's Digital Key Plus will be standard.
• 8:56
Speaker 1: The vehicle automatically opens, starts and closes without the need for the customer to pull out a phone.
• 9:02
Speaker 1: The key can be shared with friends and family via messaging applications such as WhatsApp, so if you don't have one, it's coming and it will be in your future soon, and I think it is.
• 9:18
Speaker 2: How do I say this?
• 9:19
Speaker 2: It's already been out there.
• 9:20
Speaker 1: Well, it has it's already out there, yeah not to this level.

• 9:26
Speaker 1: You don't have to do anything, Just have your phone on you and it does it all automatically.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: You set it up ahead of time, you know when we were on the Hot Rod Tour, everybody had a key to their room.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: All you had to do was touch the door.
• 9:36
Speaker 2: Yep, and it's the same thing.
• 9:37
Speaker 2: You can actually program that In the Disney resorts.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: You can program that key onto your phone.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: There you go, so it's already out there.
• 9:44
Speaker 2: It's just a matter of they took their time.
• 9:51
Speaker 3: But, once you get it on your phone.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: your phone goes dead, oh no, I'm sure that there's some way around that.
• 9:56
Speaker 1: Somebody's thought of that.
• 9:57
Speaker 1: You don't let your phone go dead, only you do that.
• 10:02
  Speaker 2: Mars.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: I know a person very close to me that loses her phone all the time or forgets it.
• 10:07
Speaker 2: Can you call my phone so I can find it Halfway to work and coming back in the house I forgot my phone.
• 10:13
  Speaker 2: Stuff like that.
• 10:16
Speaker 3: This solves that, though.
• 10:16
  Speaker 3: What about theft?
• 10:17
Speaker 3: Because they can't go out and get their car started?
• 10:19
  Speaker 3: That's true.

Speaker 1: Why did you select this one?
• 13:58
Speaker 1: This is a 1969 Chevrolet Caprice.
• 14:01
Speaker 1: Notice that it's got wheel rim trim on it, and it's got I thought it had red striped tires, but it looks stock, doesn't it?
• 14:12
  Speaker 1: Well, it is.
• 14:13
Speaker 1: This car has 6,474 miles on it.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: Nothing is driving it there.
• 14:19
Speaker 1: However, it does have a 427 in it.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: I was going to say I don't see the emblems on it With an automatic transmission.
• 14:28
  Speaker 1: It's a coupe blue.
• 14:30
Speaker 1: Look at the Medium blue cloth and vinyl interior, the dual exhaust.

• 14:46
  Speaker 1: 335 horsepower, 427 V8 with a turbo-hydromatic transmission.
• 14:52
Speaker 1: Sutter believes that the engine in the car is original to it.

• 15:53
Speaker 1: The 427 is the lower horsepower, not the 435 horse.

Speaker 2: There you go, okay.
• 22:02
Speaker 3: All right, mr Mars mars, this week in auto history.
• 22:03
Speaker 3: Sir, yeah, I found a lot of interesting things this week in auto history.
• 22:05
Speaker 3: Um, this week in 1897, ransom olds got his patent for his motor carriage.
• 22:11
Speaker 3: Now this is what led to the development of the curved dash osmobile.
• 22:15
Speaker 3: That's famous for being the first mass-produced American car that was ever set up, even before Henry Ford.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: But one of the things I found out about while I was looking at this was that he actually built 11 prototype vehicles and he included one each of every power motor available at the time.
• 22:32
Speaker 3: That was the steam electric gasoline, and in 1934, he got a patent for a diesel engine.
• 22:37
Speaker 3: So he became the only American automotive pioneer to produce and sell at least one vehicle of every mode transportation that was available.
• 22:46
Speaker 3: I thought that was really cool.
• 22:48
Speaker 3: Even before Henry Ford this week, in 1902, I did not know.
• 22:52
Speaker 3: Henry Ford's first company.
• 22:54
Speaker 3: The Henry Ford Company was a failure, his first attempt at building vehicles.
• 22:58
Speaker 3: The Henry Ford Company was a failure, his first attempt at building vehicles.
• 23:00
Speaker 3: And so while he was in the process of going through and getting rid of all that, he got, them all recalled Well.
• 23:07
Speaker 3: So the guys that came out to look at the plants and all the facilities that he had and he was selling it off, and they ended up being investors, and that included Henry Leland, and that's what led to the actual development of the Cadillac automobile company and it became known for its precision engineering and luxury because of all the engineers that started it and that carried on to its long-term standard of the world quality.
• 23:32
Speaker 3: This week, in 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opens.
• 23:39
Speaker 3: Now this I did not know, but they actually had balloon races while it was still under construction and I thought it was so weird.
• 23:45
Speaker 3: So all these people come out to watch these balloons, they lift up and they go three or four hundred miles and the race is over.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: Nobody sees the ending.
• 23:51
Speaker 3: But when it actually opened, it actually opened originally with motorcycle races, and then they had a three-day racing schedule that 15 automakers signed up for and showed up with their vehicles.
• 24:02
Speaker 3: Now, the first day of racing there was 15,000 to 20,000 spectators.
• 24:06
Speaker 3: They watched the 250-mile race and they had a car flip because of a broken rear axle, went end over end, killed the driver and the ride-along mechanic Wasn't a Ford, was it?
• 24:17
Speaker 3: Didn't say Now, after some overnight surface repairs, the second day there was 20,000 people that showed up and they had no major accidents.
• 24:25
Speaker 3: So the third day, 35,000 spectators watched the 300-mile race and at mile 175, a car blew a tire, causing him to go into the fence.
• 24:36
Speaker 3: No wall, this is pre-wall but it went into the fence, mowed down the fence and took out a dozen spectators.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: Two of them died and a mechanic was killed.
• 24:44
Speaker 3: Ten laps later, they had a car hit a pothole because of all this going on on the track because this is pre-brick and caused it to crash into the bridge.
• 24:55
Speaker 3: The race was halted and all the remaining drivers were given certificates of completion.
• 24:59
  Speaker 3: Oh God.
• 25:01
Speaker 2: Blue ribbons for every kid that plays, everybody got a trophy, oh Lord.
• 25:05
Speaker 1: Two years and 3.
• 25:06
Speaker 3: That's where that crap started Exactly, indy.
• 25:09
Speaker 3: Two years and 3.2 million bricks later, they actually held the first real Indy 500, and so it changed from a crushed stone oval and became the Brickyard.
• 25:20
  Speaker 1: Thank you, sir.
• 25:20
Speaker 1: One sentence in the United States-European Union's Framework for Trade Agreement could usher in some of the biggest changes in the auto industry it has seen in a century.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: With respect to automobiles, the US and the European Union intend to accept and provide mutual recognition to each other's standards.
• 25:38
Speaker 1: According to a joint statement a couple of days ago, the commission said it wants to identify and develop standards with the US with a view of making trade across the Atlantic easier, because, you know, there's standards for Europe and there's standards for us, and so they're going to try to meld the two together so we don't have to go through all this rigmarole and they don't have to build extra parts and all that stuff.
• 25:59
Speaker 1: The potential changes could allow vehicles to be certified for sale in the EU or in the US Exactly as built US automakers could ship vehicles to Europe without meeting European pedestrian crash standards and other rules that differ from those of the EPA, nhtsa or the Department of Transportation.
• 26:18
