- 0:00Up next for the football and Huskies start of a three game homestam FIU Panthers
- 0:04coming to Pratt and Whitney Stadium Saturday afternoon network coverage two o'clock. Bob Joyce,
- 0:09the Heart Little Group countdown a kickoff game on at three thirty here along
- 0:14the Ukon's Sports Network, gonna online via the Varsity Network App and the Varsity
- 0:17Network dot Com. Jim Moore with us, let's talk about FIU now,
- 0:21Jim, just looking at what they've done so far, they're two and one.
- 0:25They got kind of a running back by committee going on there. Kid
- 0:28John Owens had a huge day in their win against North Texas forty six thirty
- 0:33nine. So obviously they've got a pretty good offense. They can run the
- 0:37football. So as you game plan for them, what's number one on your
- 0:41priority list? Defensively, it always starts with stopping the run. And you
- 0:49know the runs that have hurt us this year the quarterback runs. As a
- 0:52matter of fact, last week on first down versus the run game, we're
- 0:55as good as we've been in two years here and against the normal like runs
- 1:00this year we've been outstanding. But there's one of my pauses for you.
- 1:06But however, I should say, however, the quarterback runs are killing us,
- 1:10and they've got a quarterback that can run and killing Jenkins and you know
- 1:15he he's pretty good runners. He's run seventeen times for sixty seven yards,
- 1:21you know, in two games. So you know, we got to make
- 1:23sure that we keep track of the quarterback because that's what's really hurt us.
- 1:27As well as continuing to get better and be better on first and second down,
- 1:33you got to earn your right into some third and longs where you can,
- 1:36you know, you can drop into coverage and make some plays or pen
- 1:40years back and rush the passer a little bit. And so far the quarterback
- 1:44runs. So for us, it always it has to start this week again
- 1:47with how do we stop the designed quarterback runs? Not the scrambles, but
- 1:52the designed quarterback runs. You know, people will will last sometimes. What
- 1:59about a spot? Can you put a spy on a quarterback? Is that
- 2:01something too risky to do or I mean some guys try it. I don't
- 2:06know. Well, in the first game of the year against NC State,
- 2:08we had a guy in the quarterback a number of times, and you know,
- 2:15sometimes he made our guy miss. Sometimes our guy got him on design
- 2:21quarterback runs, which is what hurt us last week. Those were designed quarterback
- 2:25runs. Last week, they weren't scrambles. A scramble got you got a
- 2:30quarterback that scrambles and you spy them, Yeah, but you better have you
- 2:32better be able to rush with three and cover because every time you spy a
- 2:37guy, you're taking a guy out of coverage and out of the or out
- 2:38of the rush. And that wouldn't have helped us a lick last week because
- 2:45he didn't scramble. You know, those were designed quarterback runs. So you
- 2:47have to have a plan for designed quarterback runs that also works against normal runs
- 2:52and works against the past. And so when a team has a quarterback that
- 2:55they can design runs for, essentially what happens is they pick up an extra
- 3:00blocker because now they've got they've got you know, ten, and they've got
- 3:05one run or ten blockers one runner were in typical plays, you know they've
- 3:08got if a quarterback's not the runner and the running backs are running, they
- 3:12got nine with one runner. So they've gained a guy, and you've got
- 3:15to find a way to pick up somebody so you can bring a safety up.
- 3:20And now you're exposing yourself to throw us down the field. So it's
- 3:23kind of a game of cat and mouse, and you have to call the
- 3:24things at the right time. You have to adjust your front a little bit.
- 3:28You have to do things to make sure that the quarterback run you know,
- 3:30isn't going to hurt you. Yeah. I thought the d line did
- 3:34a good job against Marcus Carroll for the most part in the game. He
- 3:38ended up in a one hundred and seven yards for Georgia State, but his
- 3:40first twenty runs fifty seven yards. I mean, I think you'll take that
- 3:44any day. The defensive line is a veteran group, good, good group
- 3:49of players. How do you assess what they did and where they can go
- 3:53this week against Florida or National. How much of an impact must they have?
- 3:58Oh, they have to have a tremendous impact. I think every game
- 4:00starts with you know, what happens up front offensively and defensively, and they
- 4:05played well. I think they'll much like our run offense. People put too
- 4:11much on the offensive line and run. Run offense is a function of all
- 4:15eleven. It's a function of your you know, ability to throw the ball.
- 4:18Run defense is a function of all eleven and your ability to you know,
- 4:23to stop some throws and make them run it. So, you know,
- 4:27but it does always start up in the trenches. And uh, I
- 4:30think our defensive line against the run has been has been good. However,
- 4:34that's sixty five yard run for a touchdown. You know, I was on
- 4:38a defensive alignment. So you know, there's those we talked about this last
- 4:44year when we were struggling a little bit, those kind of those except four
- 4:46plays. You know, hey, we were really good except for this play
- 4:49and except for that play, and except four plays or the plays that beat
- 4:53you. And so we have to find a way again to eliminate those except
- 4:57four plays. And to me, that's being more detailed than our meat and
- 5:00our planning as coaches and the way we present and the notes in our players
- 5:04take and the way that they got in practiced and applying all those things on
- 5:08Saturdays, about a minute Left with Jamore on the Coaches Show. A little
- 5:12bit later on Staying Cross justin Joe Lee with us a coach, Noah Plaque,
- 5:15the grad from Delaware had a pretty nice night the other night. Thirteen
- 5:18tackles and he linebacker. It makes thirteen tackles had a pretty good night.
- 5:23Yeah. I mean he's a good player. He's athletic, he can cover
- 5:27in space, he can run, he's a good tackler. You know,
- 5:30he's kind of converted kind of a rover to a linebacker. And I think
- 5:34what you're seeing is he's becoming more and more comfortable playing closer to the ball.
- 5:38When he was at Delaware, he played about ten yards deep, and
- 5:41now we moved him up into a linebacker position. Things happen a lot quicker
- 5:45as you get closer to the ball, and I think that it's starting to
- 5:48slow down a little bit for him, and he's starting to be able to
- 5:50key and diagnose a lot quicker, which you know, being the athlete that
- 5:56he is, and having that happen, it's gonna mean he's gonna make more.
- 6:00So I'm excited about the direction that he's going as a player for us.
- 6:03Well, let's get more of that on Saturday. That first win.
- 6:06How about that. I'm with it, Mike, Let's we gotta get one,
- 6:11all right, Coach, appreciate it. That's Jim Moore back with more.
