- 0:56Speaker 3: Welcome to two Broad Chicks.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Ayer, thanks so much for having me. We're so excited
- 1:01Speaker 4: to be studio. But before we.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Get into the juicy questions, we always ask our guests
- 1:07Speaker 2: their life lesson of the week, So.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Would you like to kick us off?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Sure? Life lesson of the week. Don't wish your time
- 1:14Speaker 4: away I like that, especially today actually, So I'm originally
- 1:20Speaker 4: from the Goldie and I came to Sydney for you guys.
- 1:23Speaker 4: And then also my manager like backed on a lot
- 1:25Speaker 4: of other things, like, for example, I was on Sunrise
- 1:28Speaker 4: this morning and then I have something after and I
- 1:32Speaker 4: don't know, I didn't have the best sleep, and you know,
- 1:35Speaker 4: it's tiring to meet new people and be on TV
- 1:39Speaker 4: and like show up as your best self all the time.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Then I was like, oh, I just want to go
- 1:43Speaker 4: home and I just want to go into bed and
- 1:45Speaker 4: just go back to training. I don't want to do
- 1:47Speaker 4: all this media stuff. But I was like, don't wish
- 1:49Speaker 4: your time away. I'm going to look back on this
- 1:51Speaker 4: experience to be like, why didn't I enjoy this so
- 1:55Speaker 4: much more? Because I would never kind of get this
- 1:58Speaker 4: experience like forever, like sometimes it's going to end at
- 2:01Speaker 4: some point. So that's something that happened today. But also
- 2:06Speaker 4: for racing as well. So there's been times where I
- 2:09Speaker 4: went to a race and you know, I was so
- 2:13Speaker 4: tired of feeling so tired, like scared and like the
- 2:17Speaker 4: anxiety of the pressure and everything like that, and I
- 2:19Speaker 4: was like, I just want this race day to be over,
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like I just I don't care about the results. I
- 2:23Speaker 4: just want to get get it over and done with.
- 2:26Speaker 4: But then what happened was at the end of the day,
- 2:29Speaker 4: the race ended anyway and it didn't like come any
- 2:33Speaker 4: faster or slower, like time is going to pass anyway,
- 2:35Speaker 4: And at the end of the day I had a
- 2:37Speaker 4: sense of regret that I didn't wasn't in the moment
- 2:40Speaker 4: and I didn't give it my all and I had
- 2:42Speaker 4: a bad performance. I didn't have a good result in
- 2:44Speaker 4: the end. So I was like, hey, don't wish your
- 2:46Speaker 4: time away. Be in the present moment and just give
- 2:49Speaker 4: it all you've got because it doesn't it's not going
- 2:51Speaker 4: to change how fast time is going to pass.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I love that.
- 2:55Speaker 5: It reminds me of this thing I read recently and
- 2:58Speaker 5: it was follow your plan and not the mood. So yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 5: so it's like whatever the plan is, just like because
- 3:06Speaker 5: like I think that's honestly so relatable. Like even though
- 3:09Speaker 5: like you know, maybe people couldn't relate to having to
- 3:11Speaker 5: go and do a media day or something like there's
- 3:12Speaker 5: like a day that they're going and they're like, I
- 3:14Speaker 5: do just want to go to fucking bed. Yeah, I
- 3:15Speaker 5: don't want to do this and that it's like, yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 5: just don't wish the time away and follow your plan
- 3:20Speaker 5: not your mood, which is definitely something I need to
- 3:22Speaker 5: do because you know how sometimes you just wake up
- 3:24Speaker 5: and you're like, I don't like it.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you just wake up with that day. I don't
- 3:28Speaker 1: like it. I don't have any reason.
- 3:30Speaker 5: But I'm in a stinky mood, and I just have
- 3:33Speaker 5: to be like, no, you're gonna be you to have fun.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no, that's.
- 3:37Speaker 4: It doesn't have to You don't have to have fun.
- 3:39Speaker 4: If you're not having fun, just don't wish it away.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Like it's still an experience that you're going to add
- 3:45Speaker 4: value to your life later on, you're going to look
- 3:47Speaker 4: back to be like that was actually a really important
- 3:49Speaker 4: time in my life and it was an important experience.
- 3:52Speaker 4: So I think, yeah, never wish your time away, whether
- 3:55Speaker 4: it's good or bad.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I love that.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Mine is a quote from the episode we did in
- 4:00Speaker 5: the Basic Bitch book Club recently, and we did Atomic
- 4:04Speaker 5: Habits in thirty Minutes, like the self help book that
- 4:07Speaker 5: like basically every Basic Bitch has read, hence the book
- 4:10Speaker 5: name and the episode. But there was a quote in it,
- 4:14Speaker 5: and I've been a massive like Suki Laala like this
- 4:16Speaker 5: last week, Like I've just been a bit of a sook,
- 4:18Speaker 5: but like not a bad way, just like if there
- 4:20Speaker 5: was a sad ad on the TV and it was
- 4:22Speaker 5: like about a grandpa.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I mean yeah, like Suki Laala the.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Last week, but one of the quotes in it was
- 4:28Speaker 5: focused on progress, not perfection, and I really like it
- 4:32Speaker 5: because it like I am a perfectionist in the way
- 4:36Speaker 5: that like it's not cool.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And I was saying this like in the.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Episode that like no one actually says it, like once
- 4:42Speaker 5: you get older, you know how when you were younger
- 4:44Speaker 5: and you'd go for a job and you'd be like,
- 4:45Speaker 5: my downfall is that I'm a perfectionist, and you said
- 4:48Speaker 5: it's like a good thing about you, And as you
- 4:50Speaker 5: get older, you realize it's actually just exhausting and wanting
- 4:53Speaker 5: to be perfect everything is just completely unattainable and unreasonable
- 4:57Speaker 5: and exhausting. And I really like this thing where I
- 5:02Speaker 5: like quotes that kind of anchor me back and I'm like, okay, okay,
- 5:05Speaker 5: Like if I get wrapped up trying to make something
- 5:07Speaker 5: perfect or something, I need something that pulls me back.
- 5:09Speaker 5: And that's one of the quotes that like, I'm sticking
- 5:12Speaker 5: in my arsen all now not sticking.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Keeping that quote in my ass.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Imagine like yeah, it was usual.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because I was doing the back pocket.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I hate it here, I hated anyway.
- 5:31Speaker 1: That's mine.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Fuck you.
- 5:33Speaker 1: What's your life lesson?
- 5:34Speaker 3: That's good. My life lesson is a reminder to.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Do the things that future you will thank you for,
- 5:41Speaker 2: because at the end of last year, I was just
- 5:43Speaker 2: feeling really frazzled. For the last couple of months, we
- 5:46Speaker 2: had a lot on it was all very exciting, but
- 5:49Speaker 2: I'd let go of a few different routines and just
- 5:52Speaker 2: felt like I was taking every day day by day,
- 5:55Speaker 2: which part of that is good, but also I love
- 5:57Speaker 2: my routine and that makes me feel really together. But
- 6:01Speaker 2: just doing little things like prepping my outfit the night
- 6:04Speaker 2: before and steaming it, doing all my meal prep on
- 6:07Speaker 2: a Sunday night, like packing my bag before I go
- 6:10Speaker 2: to bed, and doing those little things that I know
- 6:12Speaker 2: that when I wake up in the morning, I'm gonna
- 6:14Speaker 2: feel so much more prepared and I can then take
- 6:17Speaker 2: my time doing my skin care and listening to music
- 6:20Speaker 2: and I'm not sort of like rushing.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Around being like, oh, where's this, where's that?
- 6:24Speaker 2: So yeah, whatever that is for you, I think that
- 6:26Speaker 2: looks different for everybody.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But do the things that future you, well, thank.
- 6:30Speaker 4: You for that.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Usually you would put off because it's boring, but really
- 6:34Speaker 2: they take.
- 6:34Speaker 4: To do that absolutely to be like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 6:37Speaker 4: get ready for tomorrow. Like, yeah, it doesn't seem hard,
- 6:40Speaker 4: but at the time when you're doom scrolling, it's hard.
- 6:43Speaker 5: And when you just like want to go to bed,
- 6:45Speaker 5: let sleep and you still have to have a shower, Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 5: and you gotta change bed sheets.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I was singing, I was laying in bed last night
- 6:50Speaker 2: and I was like, no, I know what I can wear, Like,
- 6:52Speaker 2: I'll just get it.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Morning and then I was like.
- 6:55Speaker 2: No, no, and like when I got it and like
- 6:58Speaker 2: folded it and was like your close out.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I think starting with that in terms of a prep
- 7:03Speaker 5: your environment is probably the easiest way people can incorporate
- 7:06Speaker 5: that is just put your clothes out the night before. Okay,
- 7:09Speaker 5: let's get into the episode because we have so many
- 7:11Speaker 5: questions for you. We are literally in awe of you
- 7:14Speaker 5: because you started writing BMX when you were four years old.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I don't even think I could write write.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Like were we riding bikes and we were four years old.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Definitely I had training wheels on them for actually I did,
- 7:26Speaker 2: and I would put my guinea pig in the It's
- 7:28Speaker 2: not about yours, so cute to each other's so cute. Yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 2: say is writing BMX and you're writing with a guinea
- 7:35Speaker 2: pig in your basket.
- 7:36Speaker 3: It's the same thing, honestly, it's the same thing.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But what are your earliest memories of starting to write?
- 7:40Speaker 4: Well, I was born on the Gold Coast, but I
- 7:43Speaker 4: started BMX when we were living in Japan. So my
- 7:47Speaker 4: parents moved back to Japan because their visas ran out
- 7:50Speaker 4: for Australia because they're English and Japanese for context, and yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 4: so my earliest memories of riding bikes is do you
- 7:59Speaker 4: know the Japan have you? Have you guys been to Japan?
- 8:02Speaker 4: I had all, you know, it's enriched in that bicycle culture.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Everyone rides bikes everywhere, but it's just on the roads
- 8:10Speaker 4: with the basket, maybe with a guinea pig in the Yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 4: So I have memories of riding my like town bike
- 8:20Speaker 4: around when I was like six years old, five years old,
- 8:23Speaker 4: and I also have those memories of going to the
- 8:26Speaker 4: BMX track on the weekends and riding on the dirt track.
- 8:29Speaker 4: And also my dad would I'm pretty sure we had
- 8:32Speaker 4: one of those plastic ramps, you know those ones that
- 8:35Speaker 4: kids right right now, I remember doing like jumps off
- 8:37Speaker 4: that in front of our house. And yeah, that's all
- 8:41Speaker 4: I my whole life has There's has always been BMX
- 8:45Speaker 4: in my whole entire life, like there's I don't know
- 8:48Speaker 4: a life without it. And yeah, so that's what we
- 8:51Speaker 4: did on the weekend. And and I was just a
- 8:54Speaker 4: Japanese kid living in Japan, riding bikes with my brother,
- 8:57Speaker 4: traveling all around Japan and for national series. And yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 4: when I was seven years old, we moved back to
- 9:06Speaker 4: Australia and that's where our kind of BMX really took
- 9:09Speaker 4: off from there.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And because of course your brother Kai had a huge
- 9:15Speaker 2: obsession with BMX from a very young age as well.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And I've heard in interviews you said, you know, like
- 9:20Speaker 2: as a little sister, like, well, I just want to
- 9:22Speaker 2: do what he does, which as two younger siblings week
- 9:26Speaker 2: and absolutely yeah late, So how.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Did watching him with BMX inspire you?
- 9:31Speaker 4: Yeah, like, like you said, it was just full whatever
- 9:34Speaker 4: he did, I did you know I didn't. I feel
- 9:37Speaker 4: like I did.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He find that annoying or was he encouraging?
- 9:40Speaker 4: I think at the start, yeah, he found it annoying.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So like every time he put a sticker on his helmet,
- 9:46Speaker 4: I'll be like, I'll put on and he'd be like,
- 9:50Speaker 4: don't copy me. It's so cute. But yeah, so it
- 9:54Speaker 4: was just that's all I ever knew to follow my
- 9:59Speaker 4: brother and do BMX, and I didn't really I don't
- 10:02Speaker 4: remember like thinking for myself because it was always about BMX,
- 10:06Speaker 4: always about going to the track. And then when we're
- 10:09Speaker 4: moved back to Australia, it was like my brother started
- 10:12Speaker 4: training as well, and when he was like twelve, so
- 10:14Speaker 4: I was I was pretty young as well, and I
- 10:17Speaker 4: guess I was like, I guess I'm training, Like I
- 10:20Speaker 4: wasn't like that into it, but because kay I did it,
- 10:23Speaker 4: I did it kind of thing. So he was an
- 10:26Speaker 4: inspiration for every moment of my whole BMX life to
- 10:33Speaker 4: starting to train, taking up seriously like having a dream
- 10:37Speaker 4: together to go to Olympic Games. And originally I didn't
- 10:41Speaker 4: really want to do it professionally as like a job,
- 10:44Speaker 4: but he did so at some point that changed to
- 10:47Speaker 4: something that I wanted to do, and it was just
- 10:50Speaker 4: something that we just did all together as brother and sister,
- 10:54Speaker 4: and you know, it's just.
- 10:57Speaker 1: That's so sweet.
- 10:58Speaker 5: But you've overc a lot of challenges to get where
- 11:01Speaker 5: you are today, including a series of injuries and concussions,
- 11:05Speaker 5: one which led to you nearly quitting the sport, right
- 11:08Speaker 5: and how did you overcome that?
- 11:11Speaker 4: I guess there was a few things that I kind
- 11:14Speaker 4: of did intentionally. I guess though. The first thing was
- 11:20Speaker 4: I found like a motive of like why why So
- 11:24Speaker 4: to give it a bit of a context. So this
- 11:26Speaker 4: was in twenty twenty two where I had a concussion
- 11:30Speaker 4: and I was really at the time, I was really
- 11:32Speaker 4: not enjoying BMX, and I was really fearful of racing.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Kai had in his christ only two years earlier, and
- 11:41Speaker 4: I've seen how much it has affected him and our family,
- 11:46Speaker 4: and I'm like, why am I doing this alone? He's
- 11:50Speaker 4: not even Kai's not even doing BMX anymore, So like
- 11:53Speaker 4: why am I doing it? And it was this whole
- 11:55Speaker 4: I came up with a million reasons why I should quit,
- 11:58Speaker 4: But ultimately I think I was very scared and I
- 12:02Speaker 4: didn't see the need to risk my health for this
- 12:07Speaker 4: sport anyway. So I was like, I'm going to quit,
- 12:10Speaker 4: but then I was like, no, I'm not going to quit. Evidently, Yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 4: I think it was so to find the motive. My
- 12:19Speaker 4: motive was I don't want to feel the feeling of
- 12:24Speaker 4: regret of not trying again because I felt like I
- 12:27Speaker 4: didn't give everything I could to BMX and stopping now
- 12:31Speaker 4: it just felt icky. And some people have a motive
- 12:36Speaker 4: to run towards so I want to make money, I
- 12:38Speaker 4: want to be famous, blah blah blah. Some people have
- 12:42Speaker 4: a motive to run away from something that they want
- 12:44Speaker 4: don't want. So for me, it wasn't I want to
- 12:46Speaker 4: win the gold medal. It was I don't want to
- 12:48Speaker 4: feel regret. So that was my motive.
- 12:51Speaker 1: That's a really strong motive.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's okay. It's okay to have something that
- 12:56Speaker 4: you're running away from, but at some point in your
- 12:59Speaker 4: journey it has to switch to something that you do want.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Because I did feel that as well. I was running
- 13:05Speaker 4: away from not wanting to feel that regret and everything
- 13:10Speaker 4: like that. But then at some point that shifted. Yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 4: it wasn't strong enough, Like I wasn't so fearful of
- 13:16Speaker 4: that anymore after a few months and after almost a year,
- 13:19Speaker 4: so then I had to switch to something that I'm
- 13:21Speaker 4: running towards or something I want Anyway, what did it
- 13:26Speaker 4: switch to when gold medal? To feel proud of myself
- 13:35Speaker 4: probably was the biggest pool in the end, and I
- 13:38Speaker 4: really had to dig deep to find that. Yeah, because
- 13:42Speaker 4: going off on a bit of a tangent here, but
- 13:43Speaker 4: like for the Games, I had to not Literally three
- 13:47Speaker 4: weeks before the Games, I didn't know why I wanted
- 13:49Speaker 4: to win, Like why did I want to win this
- 13:52Speaker 4: gold medal? Like what is it like? It's not to
- 13:55Speaker 4: have this gold Chinese in myself draw, It's like what
- 13:59Speaker 4: is it to me? So I had to really dig
- 14:01Speaker 4: deep to think what is it that I want it for?
- 14:06Speaker 4: And in the end, it was like I want it
- 14:08Speaker 4: to feel proud of myself that I gave it everything. Yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 4: So that in the end that was the thing that
- 14:13Speaker 4: I was running away running towards. So now I wasn't
- 14:17Speaker 4: running away from feeling of regret that I didn't do it.
- 14:20Speaker 4: It was like I want to feel like I did
- 14:22Speaker 4: do it. So I think there's a difference, and in the.
- 14:25Speaker 1: End it's the growth thing.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then in the end, so the
- 14:29Speaker 4: positive thing is a bigger pull than the push away
- 14:33Speaker 4: from Okay.
- 14:34Speaker 5: I feel like that's a really good tip, like for
- 14:37Speaker 5: the chicks that they can apply to themselves that if
- 14:38Speaker 5: they're fearful of something, it's okay for it to be
- 14:42Speaker 5: like a negative motivation, I don't want this, yeah, but
- 14:45Speaker 5: finding something but I do want this is a stronger motivation.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Yeah. And I think if you listen to a lot
- 14:52Speaker 4: of business owners, like you know, Stephen Bartlett, I've listened
- 14:56Speaker 4: to Hip the Diary, listened to his Our Story as well.
- 15:01Speaker 4: I think his original motive was that he didn't want
- 15:04Speaker 4: to be poor, So that was his original driver, and
- 15:07Speaker 4: I think a lot of business owners are like that.
- 15:09Speaker 4: But then at some point it does have to shift
- 15:11Speaker 4: into like I want to be this or I want
- 15:13Speaker 4: to make more money or whatever. It is. So back
- 15:17Speaker 4: to how I overcame, so I find the motive. The
- 15:22Speaker 4: second one was to give myself. I gave myself a
- 15:28Speaker 4: timeframe so I was like, I'm going to give this
- 15:31Speaker 4: another shot for another year. I'm willing to endure feeling
- 15:36Speaker 4: scared and uncertain, and I'm just I'm willing to just
- 15:42Speaker 4: give it all for a year. So now I gave
- 15:44Speaker 4: myself an out for a year, so it's I knew
- 15:46Speaker 4: it wasn't going to be forever, and I'm like, it's okay,
- 15:49Speaker 4: I can do it for a year. So that was
- 15:51Speaker 4: really good. And then the third one was just taking
- 15:54Speaker 4: responsibility for my own actions and doing it the way
- 15:58Speaker 4: that I feel is right. So all this time up
- 16:03Speaker 4: until this point, I did it the way that Ki
- 16:05Speaker 4: and I did it. I did Kay, I did BMX
- 16:08Speaker 4: because of Kai and what We were a really good
- 16:11Speaker 4: team and we worked really well together. But I never
- 16:14Speaker 4: really made decisions for myself in the way that I
- 16:16Speaker 4: want to see myself progress in the sport and how
- 16:19Speaker 4: I want to see myself as an athlete and as
- 16:22Speaker 4: a person. So I think in that moment I was
- 16:25Speaker 4: able to really take responsibility of that and to then
- 16:31Speaker 4: start doing actions that I felt the most aligned with myself.
- 16:36Speaker 4: I was so empowering and those three things. So then
- 16:44Speaker 4: when I was going through all the races and I
- 16:47Speaker 4: didn't want to be there or I was so scared
- 16:49Speaker 4: and uncertain, at least I knew those three things. At
- 16:54Speaker 4: least I knew why I was doing it. I knew
- 16:56Speaker 4: how long I was going to do it for and
- 16:58Speaker 4: I at least I believed in what I was doing,
- 17:01Speaker 4: So that.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Perhaps sounds black, Yeah, as tricky as I'm sure the
- 17:07Speaker 5: physical training is, if not more like, how do you.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Overcome the fear?
- 17:13Speaker 5: Like do you still kind of have those flare ups
- 17:15Speaker 5: of nerves or fear, and how do you kind of
- 17:18Speaker 5: overcome maybe that voice in your head that's like.
- 17:20Speaker 4: This is scary. How do I overcome the fear? I
- 17:23Speaker 4: think it's it's it comes with practice and doing it,
- 17:26Speaker 4: which is the most annoying thing.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Damn it.
- 17:29Speaker 4: You can't listen to podcasts. You can't, well you can.
- 17:32Speaker 4: You can listen to podcasts, podcast read books, listen to
- 17:41Speaker 4: people get a coach like fine, but ultimately you have
- 17:45Speaker 4: to be the one that does it, which is the
- 17:48Speaker 4: annoying thing, And you have to be the one that
- 17:51Speaker 4: puts yourself in that uncomfortable situation, do it anyway, and
- 17:57Speaker 4: then get yourself to the other side. So I think
- 18:01Speaker 4: to get over the fears, it's just about the evidence
- 18:04Speaker 4: that you've built for yourself. So for example, if I'm
- 18:09Speaker 4: at the top of the star Hill doing a final
- 18:11Speaker 4: at the World Championships, I'm nervous. I'm scared. Maybe there's wind.
- 18:16Speaker 4: I'm scared that the wind's going to like take me out.
- 18:19Speaker 4: There's other people, like you know, there's a lot of
- 18:22Speaker 4: unknown simbermex As you can imagine.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yeah, so fast paced, Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Yeah, so scary. But in that moment, I can be like, no, well,
- 18:32Speaker 4: last time I felt this way, I still believed in
- 18:35Speaker 4: myself and I'll still was able to be fine. I
- 18:38Speaker 4: didn't die, it was fine, And then it was just
- 18:41Speaker 4: it's just those little pieces of evidence that you've done
- 18:46Speaker 4: that will help with overcoming the one that's it's.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Been like you did it last time, and yeah, you're okay,
- 18:52Speaker 1: so you can.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Do something similar. So for example, like you jump that
- 18:56Speaker 4: I want to jump and it's like ten eleven meters,
- 18:59Speaker 4: it's scary, need lots of speed. So I can draw
- 19:02Speaker 4: upon smaller jumps that I've done in the past and
- 19:07Speaker 4: other scary things that I thought that I didn't want
- 19:11Speaker 4: to do but I could, and at the end of
- 19:13Speaker 4: the day that you kind of know in your heart
- 19:15Speaker 4: that you have the ability to do so, like usually
- 19:19Speaker 4: you kind of have a sense of like, oh, yeah,
- 19:22Speaker 4: I could probably do this, but I'm just scared. You know,
- 19:24Speaker 4: So it's just kind of believing in yourself, believing in
- 19:28Speaker 4: what you've done in the past, being calm, and in
- 19:35Speaker 4: the end, just going for it, taking the leap of faith,
- 19:38Speaker 4: Like you're you're not going to know everything. You don't
- 19:40Speaker 4: know the future, you don't know how it's going to be,
- 19:43Speaker 4: but most likely you're probably going to succeed even yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 4: you know.
- 19:47Speaker 5: And also like living in fear is just paralyzing. Yeah too,
- 19:52Speaker 5: But I mean, you wouldn't have made a lot of
- 19:54Speaker 5: the achievements that you have made, including winning a gold
- 19:58Speaker 5: fucking medal, which is so cool. I mean, you'd be
- 20:03Speaker 5: an Olympian even if you didn't win gold, but you're
- 20:04Speaker 5: an Olympian that won gold, which like is the biggest
- 20:07Speaker 5: flex in the world.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Yeah, can you take us back?
- 20:10Speaker 4: What was that moment?
- 20:12Speaker 3: Like a well wind?
- 20:14Speaker 4: So many emotions, so many emotions. I don't think I've
- 20:18Speaker 4: been able to articulate what it felt like and what
- 20:24Speaker 4: it really meant in past interviews or even now. I
- 20:28Speaker 4: don't think I can articulate enough because of how much,
- 20:32Speaker 4: you know, almost quitting the sport, the all the fear
- 20:37Speaker 4: that I had to overcome, Like there was so much,
- 20:40Speaker 4: so many races where I stood at the top of
- 20:44Speaker 4: the start heel like fearing, and I'm like, I don't
- 20:47Speaker 4: want to do this, but I know that I can,
- 20:50Speaker 4: you know, but I don't want to. And then I
- 20:53Speaker 4: was I put my brave hat on and I just
- 20:56Speaker 4: went for it anyway, And those moments built up made
- 20:59Speaker 4: me so proud of myself of the journey. And then
- 21:04Speaker 4: not long before the Paris Games day, So ten weeks
- 21:10Speaker 4: before there was the World Championships and I probably could
- 21:15Speaker 4: have won that one, but I had some mental something
- 21:19Speaker 4: wasn't there, and I wasn't able to give it my
- 21:21Speaker 4: best and I got last, and I was like, oh
- 21:25Speaker 4: my god, I've won so many races, but I haven't
- 21:27Speaker 4: been able to win the World Championships, And like, am
- 21:30Speaker 4: I going to be that person that's one multiple world
- 21:33Speaker 4: series like World Cup rounds, but never World champs or
- 21:37Speaker 4: an Olympic final. So that was playing in the back
- 21:40Speaker 4: of my mind. And you know, I came into Paris
- 21:43Speaker 4: rank number one, so I knew that it was I
- 21:47Speaker 4: was expected to win, and I expected myself to win
- 21:50Speaker 4: as well. So to be able to pull it off
- 21:54Speaker 4: in that moment where it counted the most was like
- 21:57Speaker 4: so much relief as well, was like I can't I
- 22:00Speaker 4: just could not believe I want a gold medal?
- 22:02Speaker 1: Like did you feel like you had left your body?
- 22:04Speaker 5: Like everything was happening around you and you're just like what, yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 5: going on?
- 22:08Speaker 4: It was crazy because like I've visualized so much of
- 22:13Speaker 4: that moment. Yeah, and I'm sure you've had people on
- 22:17Speaker 4: here or talked about visualizations before of how powerful it is.
- 22:23Speaker 4: It costs nothing, just a little bit of your time
- 22:27Speaker 4: to really believe or just visualize what you want to achieve.
- 22:34Speaker 4: How do you want to feel in that moment? Really
- 22:36Speaker 4: visualize what you're hearing? Like I visualized standing at the
- 22:40Speaker 4: top of the podium, feeling the feeling the gold medal
- 22:43Speaker 4: around my neck, listening to the national anthem and crying.
- 22:47Speaker 4: I visualized all that and it literally happened. And I
- 22:50Speaker 4: was just like this moment of is this don't be
- 22:59Speaker 4: a dream?
- 23:00Speaker 5: Having your family there as well just would have been
- 23:02Speaker 5: the cherry on top of the cake.
- 23:04Speaker 4: It really was. It really was, And you know you
- 23:07Speaker 4: had have you heard of people talk about best things
- 23:10Speaker 4: that never happened to them? Some people who talk about
- 23:13Speaker 4: how like they wanted to achieve something and they didn't
- 23:17Speaker 4: get it, but then it led them down a different path,
- 23:21Speaker 4: which is even better than what they could have achieved.
- 23:24Speaker 4: So for Tokyo Games, that was the best thing that
- 23:29Speaker 4: never happened to me. Back in twenty twenty one, where
- 23:34Speaker 4: you know, there was a lot of media around my
- 23:38Speaker 4: debut at the Olympic Games. KaiA only had that crash
- 23:41Speaker 4: only a year before. There was a lot of pressure
- 23:45Speaker 4: I wanted to like finish the story, like how co
- 23:49Speaker 4: would it be.
- 23:50Speaker 5: So much pressure to put on yourself and like obviously
- 23:54Speaker 5: there's a lot of external pressure as well.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I was just so devastated, But but I'm so glad
- 24:02Speaker 4: it happened that way because winning Paris is just beyond
- 24:07Speaker 4: what I could have imagined. So having my parents and
- 24:11Speaker 4: my family their track side, like they weren't able to
- 24:14Speaker 4: be there in Tokyo, So if I won there, there
- 24:16Speaker 4: wouldn't have been this special moment where we were like
- 24:19Speaker 4: hugging as a circle after the podium and I'm crying
- 24:23Speaker 4: and h and I just want to relive that moment.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Yeah, put it in a bottle and just keep it.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so beautiful and your post race interview is,
- 24:35Speaker 2: oh my god, I just feel like every Australian was
- 24:39Speaker 2: like crying, like laughing along with you, like.
- 24:41Speaker 3: It was just amazing, Like what a special moment.
- 24:45Speaker 4: I'm still it's still like a pinch yourself moment. Yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Of how everything just came together at the right time.
- 24:56Speaker 4: It was almost like fate. I don't know, there had.
- 25:00Speaker 1: To be something, Yes, one hundred.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Percent, there has to be something that everything like everything, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 25:07Speaker 4: I'm still like did that even happen? There was just
- 25:10Speaker 4: like little things that like you know, for example, my
- 25:13Speaker 4: race number is seventy seven and I have that because
- 25:17Speaker 4: it was Kai's number. So a race with that number,
- 25:21Speaker 4: and the next day there was a newspaper article with
- 25:26Speaker 4: so there was three gold medals won by an Australian
- 25:31Speaker 4: on that day. And then i was the seventy seventh
- 25:33Speaker 4: minute and I'm like.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Oh, what my god, what is it like because obviously BAMX,
- 25:41Speaker 5: the race is like thirty to forty.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Seconds correct me if I'm wrong.
- 25:45Speaker 5: What is going through your brain during thirty to forty seconds?
- 25:49Speaker 4: No thinking? Really, it's all instinctual. So the hours we
- 25:55Speaker 4: spend on the bike and training is so when you're
- 25:59Speaker 4: at the top of the start, heell like you don't
- 26:01Speaker 4: think about anything but just going.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Yeah, how do you shut it down? Like what's like
- 26:06Speaker 5: the mantra? Because obviously you get to a point you're
- 26:09Speaker 5: going up there, you're thinking or thinking, how do you
- 26:12Speaker 5: quiet your brain into getting into the zone.
- 26:17Speaker 4: It was practice, Yeah, I practiced getting into the zone.
- 26:22Speaker 4: I practiced what am I going to be saying to
- 26:25Speaker 4: myself as I was walking up to the start heill,
- 26:27Speaker 4: and what am I going to be saying to myself
- 26:30Speaker 4: when So at the start of the race, there's a
- 26:33Speaker 4: camera that comes to if they introduce each rider, they
- 26:37Speaker 4: come to you, your wave, whatever, and then there was
- 26:40Speaker 4: a big, like twenty second gap between they when they
- 26:44Speaker 4: called out my name and then when they started the call.
- 26:47Speaker 4: So twenty seconds doesn't sound like much, but if you're right,
- 26:52Speaker 4: if you're at the top of the start hell and
- 26:55Speaker 4: you know you're about to do an Olympic final, you
- 26:58Speaker 4: have a million thoughts going through you ahead. So I
- 27:01Speaker 4: had to really focus on like what am I gonna
- 27:04Speaker 4: be thinking during that time, and most most of it
- 27:07Speaker 4: was just like just effing go just eff I'm just
- 27:09Speaker 4: gonnaff I'm just gonna go stuff these girls. I'm just
- 27:12Speaker 4: gonna go it was just literally just bringing myself to like,
- 27:17Speaker 4: I don't care what happens. I'm just gonna go. I'm
- 27:19Speaker 4: not gonna walk away here like having pulled the brakes
- 27:23Speaker 4: or not having hesitated for some reason. I'm like, I'm
- 27:27Speaker 4: just gonna go. If I crash, I don't care. I'm
- 27:29Speaker 4: just gonna he's gonna go. So that was my internal monologue.
- 27:36Speaker 4: But then once the race starts, it's all instinctual. I've
- 27:40Speaker 4: done that lap so many times in my head and
- 27:43Speaker 4: as writing as well physically, so my body knew what
- 27:46Speaker 4: to do. When you start thinking is when you're in trouble.
- 27:52Speaker 4: When so I started thinking going into like the last corner,
- 27:57Speaker 4: like the last straight, I was like, oh, gold medal,
- 28:00Speaker 4: Oh don't stuff up, Just don't stuff up, because I
- 28:07Speaker 4: knew that I had a little bit of I could
- 28:09Speaker 4: sense that I had a bit of room between myself
- 28:12Speaker 4: and the girl and second, so I was like, just
- 28:14Speaker 4: don't stuff up. But that was probably the like the
- 28:18Speaker 4: slowest last strait that I'd done that whole campaign, because
- 28:21Speaker 4: I was thinking, Yeah, it's just about getting out of
- 28:26Speaker 4: your own head, getting out of your own way, and
- 28:29Speaker 4: just letting what you trained your body to do I
- 28:32Speaker 4: love that you can. Also, this is where the visualization
- 28:36Speaker 4: kind of comes in. You can almost visualize like the
- 28:38Speaker 4: work room that you're going to present in and be like, Okay,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I know that there's an air con in here. Every
- 28:44Speaker 4: time I look at the air con, I'm going to
- 28:45Speaker 4: be like, yeah, I can do this. I love the
- 28:49Speaker 4: games too.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Well.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I knew that there was like a telegraph pole just
- 28:54Speaker 4: I was as I was walking up, and like, every
- 28:56Speaker 4: time I see that telegraph pole, I'm gonna smile and
- 28:59Speaker 4: be like, how cool it is that I'm here. How
- 29:03Speaker 4: cool is it that I get to be at the
- 29:06Speaker 4: Olympic Games and I get to race?
- 29:09Speaker 1: That is an amazing tip.
- 29:11Speaker 3: I love that.
- 29:12Speaker 4: But you have to be intentional. Yeah, but you have
- 29:14Speaker 4: to do it.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Prepare these things.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:17Speaker 1: It doesn't going to do that in my day to
- 29:18Speaker 1: day life. Yeah.
- 29:20Speaker 2: So a popular question that we got from the Chicks
- 29:23Speaker 2: was around consistency. Do you have any tips for staying
- 29:27Speaker 2: consistent and being disciplined?
- 29:29Speaker 4: Don't rely on motivation, I would say would be the
- 29:31Speaker 4: biggest one. Motivation I think is a scam because it's
- 29:38Speaker 4: just a feeling, just like happiness, sadness, anger, and it's
- 29:42Speaker 4: just going to pass. At some point you have this
- 29:44Speaker 4: spark of motivation, you feel motivated, and then it's going
- 29:47Speaker 4: to go. So if you keep relying on motivation, sometimes
- 29:52Speaker 4: it will be here and sometimes it won't, so it
- 29:54Speaker 4: will never be consistent. So number one is, don't rely
- 29:59Speaker 4: on motivation. But so and then the first thing is
- 30:03Speaker 4: to decide what you want when you want to go,
- 30:06Speaker 4: what do you want to achieve, and then you decide
- 30:09Speaker 4: on how you're going to get there every day, So
- 30:11Speaker 4: for me, I want to win the Olympic Games. Second
- 30:15Speaker 4: is I'm going to train, do this, this, this, make
- 30:18Speaker 4: a plan of how to get there. And then the
- 30:20Speaker 4: third one is every day you wake up and you
- 30:24Speaker 4: decide that you're going to do it, no matter how
- 30:27Speaker 4: how motivated or not you feel, you just do it.
- 30:31Speaker 5: I love that motivation is how often do you train?
- 30:36Speaker 1: What's it look like?
- 30:37Speaker 4: So train usually five days a week, so I get
- 30:40Speaker 4: two days of rest and one to two times a
- 30:43Speaker 4: day and it arranges around one to two hours per session.
- 30:50Speaker 4: The track sessions could be two to three hours actually
- 30:53Speaker 4: depending But yeah, I think what a lot of people
- 30:57Speaker 4: don't understand is the rest compose as well. And that's
- 31:01Speaker 4: something I'm also starting to understand how important it is
- 31:06Speaker 4: to rest so I can be the best that I
- 31:10Speaker 4: can be in training, so I get the most out
- 31:14Speaker 4: of my time. And I think that's probably a good
- 31:19Speaker 4: message to everyone really, like you do need to rest.
- 31:22Speaker 4: You can't be doing all this stuff all the time
- 31:25Speaker 4: because the quality of work that you're outputting is is
- 31:29Speaker 4: decreasing each time you show up tired, each time you
- 31:33Speaker 4: show up burnt out. Rest, I think is just as
- 31:37Speaker 4: important as the work that you put out.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Yeah, you said that, it's something that you're adjusting to.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Do you ever feel like you feel bad for resting.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Sometimes?
- 31:50Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 31:51Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 31:51Speaker 5: How do you overcome that because it's obviously not rest
- 31:54Speaker 5: if you feel bad about.
- 31:55Speaker 4: It, Yeah, exactly. I think it's the shift in mindset.
- 31:59Speaker 4: So when I feel bad about resting, I think about
- 32:04Speaker 4: why I'm resting.
- 32:06Speaker 1: That's a great reason.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I love that.
- 32:11Speaker 4: And for example, if I had an opportunity to go
- 32:14Speaker 4: to the markets with my friend, which is quite tiring,
- 32:17Speaker 4: and I could do it, I could do it on
- 32:19Speaker 4: my rest day. I don't have training, but I'm doing
- 32:23Speaker 4: something tiring rather than resting, which makes me a bit
- 32:28Speaker 4: like it makes me but it's like quality time with friends.
- 32:32Speaker 4: So it makes me feel bad, but I'm like, well,
- 32:35Speaker 4: what's my priority. I'm trying to win gold medal, so
- 32:39Speaker 4: I'm putting my energy into that and I'm resting for that.
- 32:44Speaker 4: You have you can't have it with everything.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Damn your rest can have purpose.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Oh that's amazing.
- 32:51Speaker 5: And our final question, so with our guests, we always
- 32:55Speaker 5: wrap up with the same question, and it's what has
- 32:58Speaker 5: been your biggest life lessons so far.
- 33:01Speaker 4: There's a few ways of saying it, I guess, but
- 33:03Speaker 4: it's like you can't you need to do you need
- 33:05Speaker 4: to do hard things to achieve great things, or you
- 33:10Speaker 4: can't be comfortable and grow at the same time. It's like,
- 33:15Speaker 4: damn it. Yeah that's true. Yeah, but yeah, like the
- 33:22Speaker 4: harder the thing, the bigger the reward. You know, Like,
- 33:26Speaker 4: what do I mean by hard things? It means like
- 33:30Speaker 4: physically pushing your body, It means sacrificing on friend time
- 33:36Speaker 4: or family time. It means you know, feeling scared. It
- 33:41Speaker 4: means you know, feeling desperate or feeling uncertain. I don't
- 33:44Speaker 4: want to do this, blah blah blah. But you need
- 33:47Speaker 4: to go through those things to achieve amazing things.
- 33:51Speaker 5: Yeah, you're so amazing. I'm honestly in awe of you.
- 33:55Speaker 5: Like your story and everything you've achieved and the wisdom
- 33:59Speaker 5: you have to share is just so inspiring. And obviously
- 34:03Speaker 5: I'm sure you've heard this so many times, but you
- 34:05Speaker 5: should just be so incredibly proud of yourself because I
- 34:08Speaker 5: know there are people that have never even met you
- 34:11Speaker 5: that feel that way. And Yeah, you're just incredible, and
- 34:15Speaker 5: thank you so much for joining us today.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Thank you, and we actually got I loved it.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah, chat in person, And obviously you have a lot
- 34:24Speaker 2: to look forward to.
- 34:25Speaker 3: So where can we see you next? What's coming up?
- 34:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm actually writing a book.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Oh my god, A little.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Bit of an announcement, I guess writing a book coming
- 34:37Speaker 4: out in November, just about basically what we've talked about,
- 34:42Speaker 4: a bit more in depth of like how like what
- 34:45Speaker 4: it really took to win that gold medal, why it
- 34:47Speaker 4: meant so much to me while I was bawling my
- 34:50Speaker 4: eyes out uncontrollably, and also a little bit of context
- 34:54Speaker 4: of like why like how I grew up and you know,
- 34:58Speaker 4: a bit of the store with me and Kai, And
- 35:03Speaker 4: I think I really hope that this book would be
- 35:07Speaker 4: just like something that people can take little nuggets of
- 35:12Speaker 4: wisdom and lessons out of my story of what I
- 35:17Speaker 4: learned a long way. It's definitely not a five step
- 35:19Speaker 4: plan of becoming the best in the world or being
- 35:22Speaker 4: an Olympic champion, unfortunately, and then kind of also understanding
- 35:27Speaker 4: that there is no secret. You just have to put
- 35:31Speaker 4: one step in front of the other and just do
