- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today we're talking about building bridges.
- 0:32And no, I'm not talking about physically going out and
- 0:34building a bridge. I'm talking about the
- 0:35psychological bridges to help us get along with each other
- 0:38better. And I will say this, this is a
- 0:42very appropriate time to be having conversations about this
- 0:45because of the time of the year, because of all the things that
- 0:47are going on in the world and how they break our heart when we
- 0:50see them. And building a bridge is such an
- 0:55important aspect to. The understanding and the
- 0:58healing and getting things moving in the direction we want
- 1:01them to go. So First things first,
- 1:05understanding where the other person is.
- 1:08How do you actually understand where someone else is?
- 1:11Do you make assumptions? Do you just kind of come to
- 1:15conclusions about where the other person is, or are you
- 1:17actually asking questions that will help the process?
- 1:22Most of us make a lot of assumptions.
- 1:24We will assume certain things based on our filters of intake
- 1:29and while that's fine, it's not complete.
- 1:32Now really hear that it's fine, but not complete.
- 1:37You need to know all the information or as much as you
- 1:40can take in, and the only way that you can do that is by
- 1:44getting curious and asking questions about.
- 1:48Them about what happened, about the challenge, about where they
- 1:52are and how they came to their conclusions or their beliefs,
- 1:58but without the point of arguing back because you're our goal is
- 2:03not to when we're trying to do this work of conflict
- 2:06resolution. It is not about trying to figure
- 2:09out how to convince them that you are right and they are
- 2:12wrong. Ooh, that is like the one of the
- 2:14worst things that you can do. Try to work on figuring out how
- 2:18to convince them that they are wrong.
- 2:21I know when I'm in an argument with my husband, if I take the
- 2:24approach of trying to convince him that he is wrong, I'm
- 2:28screwed right from the beginning because my husband should have
- 2:31been a litigator. He is.
- 2:32He can argue like no one. I know.
- 2:35And he will just stay in it until he wears you down and you
- 2:39can't get past it. So lessons for me with having
- 2:43him in my life have been tremendous because it's.
- 2:47I used to be the person that could do those things.
- 2:49But then the universe said hold my beer and let me give you
- 2:52somebody that can do it even better than you.
- 2:54So you have to change your approach and learn different
- 2:56skills. And boy, does that happen for
- 2:58me. I have had to change my
- 3:00approach. I've had to learn different
- 3:01skills. I've had to let go of certain
- 3:03things. To to get to that point of I can
- 3:07do conflict resolution easier and more efficiently because I'm
- 3:12asking better questions and I'm not asking questions just to get
- 3:16him to go to the line of of answers that I want to give.
- 3:21I'm genuinely curious. I'm genuinely trying to figure
- 3:25things out. And when you do that, all of a
- 3:28sudden you may have something. That's a complete epiphany and
- 3:31awakening in your in your mindset and your soul about how
- 3:34to handle something, because you're not just taking in
- 3:37information to regurgitate your what you've already formulated
- 3:41as a standard answer anyway. So in other words, I don't have
- 3:45my answers already ready sitting there.
- 3:47I have to be completely and totally present with that person
- 3:51in order to hear what they're saying, and then I have to give
- 3:55myself the time, the seconds, the minutes, maybe, maybe the
- 3:58hours or days. To actually say, you know, I
- 4:00have to think about that because I need to go back and process
- 4:04the information rather than run it through the same filter that
- 4:07will give me the same answer and the same problem, and then we go
- 4:10back to the conflict. So it's asking the right
- 4:13questions and being curious without having a frame of giving
- 4:18your answer before you know the answer to their questions.
- 4:23And while that may sound complicated, just sit and
- 4:27listen. Ask questions and just sit and
- 4:29listen and don't try to come up with an answer.
- 4:32Just hear where they are. And sometimes this is the crazy
- 4:36part of this. Sometimes just letting somebody
- 4:38vent and get it all out and you not trying to solve the problem
- 4:43is the best gift you can give another person.
- 4:46Especially if they're upset with you because they just want to be
- 4:49heard, they don't need you to fix it.
- 4:52So I think that. It's it's one of the things that
- 4:55I've learned in being a coach and having friends and family.
- 4:59I can't always be the coach. I have to be the friend.
- 5:02So I have friends that will call me and they're like, oh, listen,
- 5:04I just need my friend right now. OK, great.
- 5:06I'm not fixing it. You want to talk about something
- 5:08great, I'll complain with it right along with you because
- 5:11that's where they are. I don't have to fix everything.
- 5:14But sometimes they'll call and they'll be like, hey, I need my
- 5:16a coach right now. OK, great.
- 5:17I'm. I got my coach head on and I can
- 5:19switch that quickly. Because that's what it means to
- 5:21me, to be able to be there for them and be able to understand
- 5:25what they need. Because I'm really listening.
- 5:28So this listening skill, this piece that I'm heavily touting
- 5:31on today in this conflict resolution is listen, Listen
- 5:34your buns off. Make sure you're hearing
- 5:37everything that they're saying and the things they're not
- 5:39saying. Be the person that somebody can
- 5:41come to and be honest with and open up to, because that's where
- 5:45the key is. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:48you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:50Bye.
