- 4:40Speaker 2: Yes, I'm sorry cataract. I'm mistakable symplem Oh, it's no
- 4:45Speaker 2: laughing matter, mister Thomas. If you value your eyes.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Houn you almost had me full for a minute. It's
- 4:52Speaker 3: the same old racket, but with new trimmings.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Mister Thomas, cheap little crook.
- 4:58Speaker 3: You think you were handing out this line for.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I was a detective for thirty years before I retired
- 5:03Speaker 2: to this little place.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Sorry, let's get.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Let's see you're rocket sended right now. We ain't got
- 5:09Speaker 2: an eye doctor in a hundred miles, but we got
- 5:12Speaker 2: a fine.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Little jail down in.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Kind of.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Told you.
- 5:32Speaker 3: What's the letter say, Patty?
- 5:33Speaker 5: It says my.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Dear mister Carter, in accordance with the old Wisha's I'm
- 5:37Speaker 4: keeping you in touch with the news.
- 5:38Speaker 5: About your old friend Fred Thomas. I'm very sorry to
- 5:41Speaker 5: tell you that Fred is dead dead.
- 5:46Speaker 4: He committed suicide on his farm sometime yesterday. A note
- 5:50Speaker 4: was done which Fred stated that he had been depressed
- 5:53Speaker 4: for some time owing to failure of his health, and
- 5:56Speaker 4: that he had decided to get up the struggle.
- 5:58Speaker 3: That's impossible.
- 5:59Speaker 5: I can't tell you how sorry I am to give
- 6:01Speaker 5: you this news. He was very sincerely water Bleaker attorney.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I can't believe it, Patsy said.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Thomas was pretty close to seventy names.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Fred could be one hundred and seventy. He'd never commit suicide.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Well, some people when they helped fail.
- 6:15Speaker 3: If Fred Thomas worked with my father. He was my
- 6:17Speaker 3: father's friend and mine. Fred never gave up a fight.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Never, Well, what do you think happened there?
- 6:23Speaker 3: I'm not going to do anything until we've got facts
- 6:25Speaker 3: to go on.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Do you want me to write to the lawyer? Bleachers?
- 6:27Speaker 3: No, got your bag packed. We're driving out to West
- 6:30Speaker 3: Villa at once. All right, Sheriff Park in Flae. Mister,
- 6:46Speaker 3: i'd like to talk to you. My name is Nick Carter,
- 6:48Speaker 3: This is my secretary, Patsy Bourne. Hello, the detective fellow.
- 6:52Speaker 3: What do you want to talk about, Fred Thomas? Nothing
- 6:54Speaker 3: to talk about, Cass clothes. Well, Sheriff, I'm not exactly
- 6:58Speaker 3: satisfied with the facts as they say. You're not. Eh No,
- 7:02Speaker 3: I'm not. I ain't not too bad. Look, lister Nick Carter.
- 7:06Speaker 3: We've got a small police department here, not exactly fancy
- 7:09Speaker 3: like you're a big city outfit. But we know our
- 7:11Speaker 3: way around. I'm sure you do. If you've got any
- 7:14Speaker 3: idea of making a big show down here, excuse me, Sheriff.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I don't like to interrupt, but you don't understand. I've
- 7:20Speaker 3: come down here to cooperate and help. There are any headlines,
- 7:24Speaker 3: you can have them? Ah, look, Sheriff. Patsy and I
- 7:28Speaker 3: just checked in at the Westville Hotel. But you mind
- 7:30Speaker 3: calling the death clerk. Why should I do that? You
- 7:33Speaker 3: prove that I'm sincere call him and ask him to
- 7:34Speaker 3: read you the names of the people who just checked in.
- 7:37Speaker 3: If that doesn't satisfy you, we'll get out of town.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I think you're crazy, but just to get rid of you,
- 7:43Speaker 3: I'll do it. Ellie, get me Sam Woods at the hotel. Yeah, damn,
- 7:58Speaker 3: this is Joe part. I understand. A man and a
- 8:01Speaker 3: woman just checked in. What's their name? Mister Nelson Crane
- 8:07Speaker 3: and miss Paula brown Shoe shalesman. Well, well, well, thanks
- 8:15Speaker 3: Sam Well, Sheriff. I guess maybe I made a mistake,
- 8:20Speaker 3: mister Carter. I apologize you and miss Boone forget a sheriff.
- 8:25Speaker 3: All I want to do is to find out what
- 8:26Speaker 3: happened to my old Fred. I'll come on, come on,
- 8:30Speaker 3: we'll go out to Fred's farm right now, and by heaven,
- 8:33Speaker 3: if you weren't any headlines, I'll split them with you.
- 8:45Speaker 3: This is where he was found, mister Carter, the day
- 8:47Speaker 3: before yesterday, mister Poler, All right, old missus Jameson found
- 8:52Speaker 3: his body. She used to clean up for him every
- 8:54Speaker 3: few days.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Oh then Fred lived alone.
- 8:56Speaker 3: All alone. This bone. Here's the note we found on
- 8:59Speaker 3: this Fredda was slumped in the chair right from front
- 9:02Speaker 3: of the hood. My health is going fast. I'm seventy
- 9:05Speaker 3: years old. Doesn't seem worth fighting anymore, Sheriff. This doesn't
- 9:10Speaker 3: smell right. No, the notice printed, why wasn't it written?
- 9:14Speaker 3: That bothered me too, But then I remembered Fred's eyes
- 9:18Speaker 3: had been going back on him. Maybe, And how about
- 9:21Speaker 3: the suicide to shoot himself? Yeah? The heart you checked
- 9:25Speaker 3: the gun for prince Yeah, gun down at the courthouse
- 9:28Speaker 3: but I've got photos with me. Yeah, I was showing
- 9:30Speaker 3: to you it was a thirty eight automatic bullet. Checking
- 9:34Speaker 3: the gun all right. We dusted the prince inside, knocked,
- 9:37Speaker 3: found Fred's prince all over it, shot and cleared the crystal,
- 9:40Speaker 3: everyone of them.
- 9:42Speaker 4: You see, I think the Sheriff's right, mate, Fred must
- 9:44Speaker 4: have committed suicide.
- 9:45Speaker 3: No, Petty, these photographs prove I'm right. The fingerprints and
- 9:49Speaker 3: that gun were placed there after Fred was killed. They
- 9:51Speaker 3: were what the simple matter, Cheff. You know that all
- 9:54Speaker 3: the killer had to do was take the dead man's
- 9:56Speaker 3: hand wrap it around the gun.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Of course, but what makes you so sure that's what happened?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Because the prince are too clear and sharp, Patsy, especially
- 10:02Speaker 3: when Fred supposed to have held the gun when he
- 10:03Speaker 3: shot himself. Too clear. Yes, the recall of the gun
- 10:06Speaker 3: and his dying hand would smudge the prince. It couldn't
- 10:09Speaker 3: possibly be sharp. By having you right, I've been a fool.
- 10:13Speaker 3: And the question now is who killed Fred Thomas and why?
- 10:17Speaker 3: That's fine, Let's go back to your office, Sheriff and
- 10:20Speaker 3: start thinking. Jeff, you say Fred has no way he's
- 10:34Speaker 3: at all in Westville, not one. He was a fine man,
- 10:37Speaker 3: and everyone liked it.
- 10:38Speaker 4: And you also say he had nothing worth stealing, No,
- 10:41Speaker 4: nothing wrong the stone.
- 10:43Speaker 3: And it gets down to this, Fred must have come
- 10:45Speaker 3: across something new, something bad here in Westville. Whatever that was,
- 10:50Speaker 3: he was killed as a result. We've got to find
- 10:53Speaker 3: what it was. Well, you name it, mister Carter, and
- 10:55Speaker 3: will will find it. So Cheff, you're the man to
- 10:57Speaker 3: call the turn now, I am ah. Well, have you
- 11:01Speaker 3: noticed anything new or different or unusual about Westville recently?
- 11:05Speaker 3: Suspicious strangers passing through new businesses? Anything? I can't think of, nothing,
- 11:10Speaker 3: at least, nothing suspicious, not even some little thing that's
- 11:14Speaker 3: thought of the ordinary. And the only thing I've noticed
- 11:17Speaker 3: recently is that lots of folks who never wore glasses
- 11:20Speaker 3: and wearing them. Now, wait, say lots of folks have
- 11:23Speaker 3: suddenly taken to wearing glasses when never wore them before.
- 11:26Speaker 3: That's right. Why even though jam Small's got a pair?
- 11:29Speaker 3: Why do you mention gem Small, particularly because he'd be
- 11:32Speaker 3: the last fire I'd expect to see wearing glasses? Why
- 11:36Speaker 3: wear them? I I wonder where Jim got damn spects were?
- 11:40Speaker 4: They probably brought them at the oculus, same as anyone else.
- 11:44Speaker 3: That's just the point, Miss Varne, there ain't no oculist
- 11:47Speaker 3: in Westville. Well, if that's when anyone wants glasses, they
- 11:50Speaker 3: drive the sixteen miles over to Garrett Town. Gem's then
- 11:54Speaker 3: laid up for the last two months of the lane back.
- 11:56Speaker 3: He couldn't get.
- 11:57Speaker 2: To gary Town neither he brought them by mail or not.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Small. You want to see what he's flying for, Sriff,
- 12:03Speaker 3: I think you've given me the answer. I was looking
- 12:04Speaker 3: for a new glasson. I don't get you. Let's go
- 12:07Speaker 3: ask Jim Small about it. There's just one chance in
- 12:10Speaker 3: a hundred that this is something new that killed Fred Thomas.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Physical condition of farm excellent, best conditions for maintenance of health.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Got an alice. Now about your own condition, mister Owenson,
- 12:32Speaker 2: age four sixty five, recent operations or illnesses ten year ago?
- 12:38Speaker 2: Get appendix taken note nothing serious than that. Now you're
- 12:44Speaker 2: physical conditions. I'm the best I should say I should
- 12:48Speaker 2: one moment.
- 12:49Speaker 5: What is it, Jerry?
- 12:50Speaker 2: You mind if I take a close look at your eyes?
- 12:53Speaker 2: Mister Olson, Yes, yes, I see you having difficulty reading lately.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Prince Blaird, your eyes seemed dim, tendency to squint headaches
- 13:05Speaker 2: sometimes you know that he is right. That's too bad.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I'm sorry, mister Olson. I've got bad news for you.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Take this Alice's condition of eyes dangerous first stages of
- 13:18Speaker 2: cataract cataract. Yes, you mean the go blind. I'm sorry,
- 13:24Speaker 2: but it looks as if you no, no, not blind,
- 13:27Speaker 2: the kind of go blind. Oh, it's not as bad
- 13:31Speaker 2: as all that, mister Olson. Mister you and lady, you
- 13:35Speaker 2: scientific people from Federal Foundation. You know science, you know
- 13:41Speaker 2: about eyes. Maybe maybe you tell me how affection up? Please? Well,
- 13:47Speaker 2: there is a cure, mister Olson.
- 13:49Speaker 5: You are tearing me.
- 13:50Speaker 2: The Federal Foundation elixir. Alice, get a bottle. Now. This treatment,
- 13:55Speaker 2: when taken with a special Foundation glasses, retards.
- 13:57Speaker 5: The progress of cataract.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Unfortunately, it's a difficult formula to prepare, mister Olson. It's
- 14:04Speaker 2: rather expensive.
- 14:05Speaker 5: How much uh?
- 14:07Speaker 2: One undred dollars one? Yeah, sur price is too much
- 14:11Speaker 2: for you? No, no, price too much to pay for
- 14:14Speaker 2: age that you may here? They good money? From whose
- 14:18Speaker 2: I get a pair of the Foundation glasses?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Two when southwest twenty four miles and now parameter twenty
- 14:28Speaker 6: nine point nine one.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And four, pay the one again.
- 14:34Speaker 2: She leaves you.
- 14:36Speaker 6: You bring you a special warning. Sriff part in the
- 14:40Speaker 6: pociation with Nick. Carter warns all citizens to be on
- 14:43Speaker 6: the lookout for two crooks now working in the cataract
- 14:46Speaker 6: reckets Ms Garnet.
- 14:47Speaker 2: That's a right a man and a.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Woman claiming to be representatives that the Federal Foundation are
- 14:52Speaker 6: working through the farms and selling bogus church for imaginary
- 14:55Speaker 6: cases of cataracts. Any information that there whereabouts should be
- 15:00Speaker 6: borne directly to this station. A reward of one thousand
- 15:04Speaker 6: dollars will be paid.

- 15:13Speaker 2: missus short, I want to call radio station right away.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Sure I hear announce, but I think hiden rewards. You
- 15:20Speaker 2: get radio station tick bleach. I think crooks is here
- 15:23Speaker 2: on my farm. Now, many, it's that I take one
- 15:27Speaker 2: hundred dollars from me. Now I take one thousand dollars
- 15:30Speaker 2: from them. I totally cut a roll of puties. By
- 15:37Speaker 2: good work, Jerry, he's our call. Hang up that receiver quick, Okay,
- 15:42Speaker 2: doing a jam. But there's one ray of sunshine. At
- 15:45Speaker 2: least this big mouse didn't get through the neck. Carter,
- 15:53Speaker 2: the two crooked stand over Olsen's body, and Nick is
- 15:56Speaker 2: seventy miles away. We'll see what happens next in just
- 15:58Speaker 2: a moment. Well, back to the case of the Failing Eyes.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by new
- 16:10Speaker 2: post war old Dutch cleanser. It's four o'clock in the afternoon,
- 16:14Speaker 2: heavy thunderclouds just slowly covering the sky as Nick's long
- 16:18Speaker 2: black convertibles scorches down the roads, eating up the mile
- 16:20Speaker 2: to Olsen's bark.
- 16:22Speaker 3: How much further sheriff just mis boarne.
- 16:25Speaker 5: You know, Nick, I keep thinking about that phone called
- 16:28Speaker 5: the radio station. People kind of make fun of the
- 16:30Speaker 5: way local phone.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Operates in the country, gossip and listening to local conversation. Yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 4: but if that missus choke, you know, the local operator
- 16:38Speaker 4: hadn't been in the habit of listening in or what
- 16:40Speaker 4: people were saying, he wouldn't have been able to relay
- 16:42Speaker 4: mister Olsen's message to us.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Well, I'm still worried about Olsen's What do you think
- 16:46Speaker 3: happened to him? But print the crook's overheard his call
- 16:48Speaker 3: and shut him up. He's off, mister Carter. Here's Olsen's place.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Golly, thank having that's over.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Several miles, seventy two minutes. That's traveling is this is
- 17:04Speaker 3: our head lar local? Please all right?

- 17:23Speaker 2: he's disappeared.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Well, Nick, We've checked the house, the barns, shedding, the
- 17:47Speaker 3: chicken coops, all the buildings on the farm, and.
- 17:49Speaker 2: He ain't many of them.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Mister Cotter, he must be here somewhere.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I'll tell you what, mister Lara. Suppose you have your
- 17:55Speaker 3: men check the rest of the farm, search all the ditches, gullies,
- 17:58Speaker 3: the brook, back of the orchard and so on. Okay,
- 18:00Speaker 3: we'll do that.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Let's go. Man.
- 18:01Speaker 3: If Austin's murdered, and as a throne chance he was,
- 18:04Speaker 3: the killer may have buried his body. To be on
- 18:06Speaker 3: the lookout for fresh turned earth. We'll keep our eyes open,
- 18:08Speaker 3: miss Cutters. Right, Sheriff, will you come out to the
- 18:13Speaker 3: driveway that turns off the road. What's on your mind?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Tire tread oh rained last night, just enough to make
- 18:19Speaker 3: all the tire marks made today plainly visible. Ook here
- 18:23Speaker 3: quite a massive tracks in this drive, mister Carr think
- 18:27Speaker 3: you can make anything out of them? And maybe let's
- 18:29Speaker 3: see This diamond pattern tread belongs to wet Laro's car,
- 18:33Speaker 3: Miss India. Balloon is from Osin's truck.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Well, how do you know that Nike?
- 18:36Speaker 3: I checked him on the sheriff and his men were
- 18:37Speaker 3: looking for Osen.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Oh, so that's why I didn't go with them.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, and these are the marks of my tires, these
- 18:43Speaker 3: triangular treads and from the other officer's car. Also the
- 18:46Speaker 3: ones of the straight boarded band. Yes, those are from
- 18:49Speaker 3: Tom Adams car and that accounts for all our cars. Right,
- 18:52Speaker 3: How look, your Sheriff, here's one tire track unaccounted for.
- 18:57Speaker 5: It's a half moon pattern.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Funny looking too, and an easy pattern to identify. Sheriff.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Let's have another look at those pictures you took at
- 19:04Speaker 3: the time of Fred Thomas's murder. Yeah, I'm right here
- 19:07Speaker 3: you want, am I remember one in particular close up
- 19:10Speaker 3: of the DA Here it.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Is, it's the picture some tire marks. How'd you happen
- 19:15Speaker 5: take that one, Sheriff?
- 19:16Speaker 3: Well, well, I'll tell you. I've been reading a book
- 19:19Speaker 3: on deteking and it's said to never overlook a thing.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Oh when I saw these marks and knew that there
- 19:24Speaker 3: wasn't Fred's car, I took the picture just in case
- 19:27Speaker 3: something might come up later, and it has sheriff look
- 19:30Speaker 3: closely at this shot.
- 19:32Speaker 5: That's the same tread.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that same half moon pattern. And since that tread
- 19:38Speaker 3: appears in both places where we know the cataract crooks
- 19:40Speaker 3: have been at tender one up, it's the thread of
- 19:42Speaker 3: their car. I'll buy that. Now, what we do, well,
- 19:45Speaker 3: this is mostly a backcountry district, bactically, all the roads
- 19:47Speaker 3: at dirt. Maybe we can follow this tire mark and
- 19:49Speaker 3: catch up with those crooks. Maybe if the rain holds off. Yeah,
- 19:54Speaker 3: gotta work, beast, want to beat the rain. Let's see
- 19:56Speaker 3: the tire marks here from the right are over the
- 19:59Speaker 3: left by those going out to the left. That means
- 20:01Speaker 3: the once of the left are more recent. Then the
- 20:03Speaker 3: killers drove out and turned south on the road right,
- 20:06Speaker 3: So let's get in my current follow the track.
- 20:07Speaker 5: You really think you've got a chance, Nike, Yes, Betsy.
- 20:09Speaker 3: If they stick to the dirt road, and if the
- 20:11Speaker 3: rain holds off, trade ahead and miss Garna straight ahead,
- 20:25Speaker 3: I can still make out the half moon cutter it's
- 20:27Speaker 3: turn to have been weaving in and out of the back road.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Probably hasn't marriage and get credits for that. How so
- 20:32Speaker 3: he throw up roadblocks in the ten miles circle right
- 20:35Speaker 3: after I spoke to him on the phone. Good man,
- 20:37Speaker 3: it means our friends are running in circles trying to
- 20:39Speaker 3: find a place to break Thanks. Oh dog Garne smetter
- 20:45Speaker 3: shift the rain, start show what has we don't ever
- 20:52Speaker 3: take them before the next pork or cross run them
- 20:53Speaker 3: afraid they'll get away unless the roadblocks stop him. It's carna,
- 20:57Speaker 3: Look up their head.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Why there's smoke, black smoke?
- 21:02Speaker 3: What does that remind you of? Sheriff? I burn an
- 21:04Speaker 3: oil and gasolene them crooks. Couldn't a cracked up running away?
- 21:09Speaker 3: Good day. We'll see in a moment.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Hold up, it's a.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Car down in the covert.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Come out, good grief.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Look at him pretty.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Well burned off the christ at least an hour ago. Yeah,
- 21:27Speaker 3: watch your step pass all right? Hey, Look two bodies
- 21:32Speaker 3: inside badly burns. Looks like a man and a woman.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Oh two doors to dance churchlight on real fog, lights
- 21:40Speaker 3: of a bumper, last two numbers of license type five
- 21:43Speaker 3: nine not to kill his car without any questions. Yeah,
- 21:48Speaker 3: it looks like that's cut him before a week. Give
- 21:54Speaker 3: me a hand of this job with the shirt force
- 21:56Speaker 3: it open. A man and a woman about all they
- 22:04Speaker 3: can say. Now I have to check further for identification.
- 22:07Speaker 3: It looks like the remainiers of books and bottles here
- 22:09Speaker 3: in the backseat, and what's less a lot of spectacles too.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Well.
- 22:12Speaker 5: I guess nobody'll ever driving this car again.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You don't know that anybody in the water drive. The
- 22:16Speaker 3: two crooks don't need a car no more, not that
- 22:19Speaker 3: they're both dead. I wonder whether they are this water?
- 22:23Speaker 3: Do you mean, batsy? I've got a job for you.
- 22:25Speaker 3: This case isn't finished yet. What you crazy, mister Carr.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Don't death finish The case depends on who's dead, Cheff,
- 22:31Speaker 3: I listen, both of you. Here's what I want to do.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Somewhere up there far.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Hi's getting the job and getting all mixed up. Make
- 22:44Speaker 4: sid to cover all these sad roads. But I don't
- 22:46Speaker 4: know where I've been and where I haven't. The John
- 22:50Speaker 4: Rose twist and turn like a like a labyrinth. I
- 22:54Speaker 4: wish Nick were here.
- 22:55Speaker 5: I'd like to ask him whether, hey, hey, get off
- 23:03Speaker 5: the road you want to get knocked down.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Let's drove the door in the world's a gun, sister,
- 23:09Speaker 2: Get out of the car. I've been waiting two hours
- 23:12Speaker 2: for an easy mark to come along, and you're it.
- 23:15Speaker 2: The car belongs to me now, lady, you won't be
- 23:19Speaker 2: needing it anymore. Patsy stares at the wild eyed man,
- 23:28Speaker 2: who fingers his revolver nervously and motions herround of Nick's car.
- 23:31Speaker 2: We'll see what she does in just a moment. Now
- 23:38Speaker 2: for the conclusion of the Case of the Failing Eyes.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Today's adventure with Nick Carter rought to you by new
- 23:45Speaker 2: post war old Dutch cleanser. On the lonely country road,
- 23:48Speaker 2: Patsy crouches behind the wheel of Nick's convertible.
- 23:51Speaker 3: The armed man who has.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Stopped the car, ships his gun to his left hand,
- 23:54Speaker 2: reaches through the open door and grabs Patsy. Come on,
- 23:57Speaker 2: you heard me, get out. I'd just as soon let
- 24:01Speaker 2: you have an office a man, aren't you? How do
- 24:04Speaker 2: you know from the description? Here's it, lady. If you
- 24:07Speaker 2: ever had a chance, it's gone.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Now.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Come on. He can't help you.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Now, come on, let's get off the road.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I don't want them to find you right away. Just
- 24:18Speaker 2: a couple of hours in your cars all I need.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Don't be a pool sister. Yelling won't help none. It's
- 24:28Speaker 2: fine enough. I'm not gonna waste time, says here, this
- 24:33Speaker 2: is it?
- 24:38Speaker 3: Looking for that? It'd probably a bur and poison. You
- 24:41Speaker 3: heard your pappy.
- 24:42Speaker 5: No, no, no, it's just my heart a boon. Start again.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I got all Thank you. I love trying
- 24:47Speaker 3: to get out of pluggage compartment. Well, my friend, the
- 24:50Speaker 3: racket's finished, and you, dude, no names please. After all,
- 24:54Speaker 3: I could call you a three time killer, swindler, thief
- 24:57Speaker 3: and all around crook, but I won't. I'll just call
- 24:59Speaker 3: you a jail bird. Feeling better enough, I guess so.
- 25:11Speaker 5: But golly, I was scared stiff.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Nick, What even though we planned everything in that band?
- 25:16Speaker 5: I know?
- 25:17Speaker 4: But Nick, how did Jerry Lake get away with that
- 25:20Speaker 4: cataract racket?
- 25:21Speaker 5: How do you manage to scare people in the Falling Point?
- 25:24Speaker 3: Well, they only picked on the older folks, people who
- 25:26Speaker 3: were suffering from the natural short sightedness of old age.
- 25:28Speaker 3: All he did was describe the symptoms of failing eyesight.
- 25:31Speaker 5: And they thought he was describing the symptoms of cataracts.
- 25:34Speaker 3: That's about it.
- 25:35Speaker 5: What a dirty wrecking.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Oh well another thing, Nick, Yeah, you say it was
- 25:40Speaker 4: Olson's body that was burning Jerry Lake's car.
- 25:42Speaker 3: That's right. You see, Jerry murdered the girl he worked with,
- 25:45Speaker 3: left her body and Olson's body in the car when
- 25:48Speaker 3: he burned it. Yeah, he figured I'm making us think
- 25:50Speaker 3: he was the one who was who died in the
- 25:52Speaker 3: phony wreck that he could get clear.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Well, you said you knew it was a phony accident
- 25:56Speaker 4: because the car was still in low gears.
- 25:59Speaker 3: I shouldainly did. If the wreck had been on the
- 26:01Speaker 3: level and they had gone off the road while they
- 26:02Speaker 3: were driving along, the car would have been a high gear.
- 26:05Speaker 5: I didn't notice what Geared was in. I just saw
- 26:08Speaker 5: the dead body and that was that.
- 26:10Speaker 3: That's what most people think. They look, but they don't see.
- 26:13Speaker 3: That's like Jerry Lake. What about Jerry He couldn't see
- 26:17Speaker 3: that when he put Red's fingerprints on the gun, he
- 26:19Speaker 3: was really putting the finger on himself. As a result,
- 26:22Speaker 3: he's going to get well acquainted with the electric chair,
- 26:24Speaker 3: which is as it should be. Well, Nick, what about
- 26:37Speaker 3: the adventure that new post war old Dutch cleanser will
- 26:39Speaker 3: bring us next week. It's a story about women's fashions, Mike,
- 26:43Speaker 3: women's fashions.
- 26:44Speaker 2: They've always been a mystery to me. Don't tell me.
- 26:46Speaker 3: On this case, they're more than a mystery. There are
- 26:48Speaker 3: calls for plenty of violence.
- 26:49Speaker 5: You see, the.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Fashions were being stolen, and Mary Daniel said she knew
- 26:53Speaker 4: who was stealing them.
- 26:54Speaker 3: And when we went to see her, she walked out
- 26:56Speaker 3: of her apartment without saying a.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Word, and a moment later we found her murdered and
- 27:00Speaker 4: bedroom in that same apartment.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Hey, wait, this is confusing enough without going any further,
- 27:05Speaker 2: what do you call this adventure?
- 27:06Speaker 5: Nick?
- 27:06Speaker 3: I call it the Case of the Quiet Roommate.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Nick. Carter Master Detective is presented each week at this
- 27:26Speaker 2: time by the Cutter Heatacking Company. It is produced and
- 27:29Speaker 2: directed by Jack McGregor and is copyrighted by Street and
- 27:32Speaker 2: Smith's Publications, Incorporated. Charlotte Manson is featured as Petsy. Today's
- 27:36Speaker 2: script was written by Alfred Bester. Original music is played
- 27:40Speaker 2: by Henry Silvern. This program is fictional and any resemblance
- 27:43Speaker 2: to actual persons living or dead is purely coincidental. This
- 27:48Speaker 2: is Michael Fitzmorris saying, when minutes count, use new post
- 27:52Speaker 2: war old Dutch cleansers. This was a mutual broadcasting.
- 28:05Speaker 1: System welcome back well a good step to ensure that
- 28:11Speaker 1: Nick got cooperation with him registering anonymously or I should say,
- 28:17Speaker 1: under a pseudonym. And we have heard episodes where Nick
- 28:20Speaker 1: has gone into a more rural community and has really
- 28:23Speaker 1: kind of run roughshod over the local law enforcement. But
- 28:28Speaker 1: clearly this was a case it was important for him
- 28:30Speaker 1: to solve, and he wanted to be sure that just
- 28:33Speaker 1: in case, he wouldn't be seen as stepping on toes
- 28:37Speaker 1: so that he would have a free hand to investigate it. Overall,
- 28:41Speaker 1: a very interesting tale bit of an inverted mystery, though
- 28:45Speaker 1: not entirely as we didn't know quite what had happened
- 28:48Speaker 1: with a few details. Though, I think his plan of
- 28:53Speaker 1: killing the farmer and hoping that the police and Nick
- 28:57Speaker 1: Carter would buy that it was him was a bit
- 29:00Speaker 1: far fetch because the farmer was missing and the farmer
- 29:05Speaker 1: definitely wasn't the one to do any sort of killing.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Still an interesting case, and this is a bit of
- 29:12Speaker 1: a ongoing sort of scam that hit a lot of
- 29:17Speaker 1: rural areas, the Cataract scam. There was also phony stock
- 29:23Speaker 1: and phony oil wells that often were concocted in big
- 29:28Speaker 1: cities to take advantage of people living in rural areas.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And this is something that you will find a lot
- 29:35Speaker 1: of old time radio and even early television educating people
- 29:41Speaker 1: about these sort of scams that people concocted. Probably one
- 29:47Speaker 1: of the more prominent examples Lamon Abner. They did a
- 29:51Speaker 1: cereal where everybody got roped into buying these sort of
- 29:56Speaker 1: glasses and were just stumbling around and able to see anything.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Were when they removed it, they saw fine and were
- 30:04Speaker 1: not quite have they thought that they were doing something
- 30:07Speaker 1: wrong by taking off the glasses. A very funny routine,
- 30:10Speaker 1: but it also did serve to educate about this sort
- 30:14Speaker 1: of skim if people came down the road with that
- 30:16Speaker 1: sort of thing, all right, well, that will do it
- 30:19Speaker 1: for today. Join us back here next Thursday, another episode
- 30:22Speaker 1: of Nick Carter. Next Tuesday, the Crime Files of Flamond
- 30:27Speaker 1: and tomorrow yours truly, Johnny Doller. In the meantime, send
