Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 156! I can't believe we're this far in. Lucas: I know. And today we're going to do something sweet. We're going to order cake at a café. Luna: Ooh, I love cake. My sweet tooth is ready. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Yeah, it really does make a difference. Every little bit helps us keep making episodes ad-free. Lucas: Absolutely. Alright, let's dive in. First phrase: Nataka keki. Luna: Nataka keki. Lucas: Perfect. 'Nataka' means 'I want'. 'Keki' means 'cake'. So 'Nataka keki' is 'I want cake'. Luna: Nataka keki. I can definitely use that. Lucas: Now let's specify the flavor. Keki ya chokoleti. Luna: Keki ya chokoleti. That's chocolate cake. Lucas: Right. And Keki ya machungwa is orange cake. Luna: Keki ya machungwa. Orange cake. I'd try that. Lucas: Good. Now if you want one slice, say 'Keki moja, tafadhali.' Moja is one, tafadhali is please. Luna: Keki moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Nice. And to ask the price: 'Bei gani ya keki?' — 'How much is the cake?' Luna: Bei gani ya keki? Lucas: Exactly. And a typical answer: 'Keki ni shilingi elfu moja.' The cake is one thousand shillings. Luna: Keki ni shilingi elfu moja. That's about a dollar, pretty reasonable. Lucas: Let's put it together. Imagine you walk into a café. You say: 'Nataka keki. Keki ya chokoleti, tafadhali.' Luna: Nataka keki. Keki ya chokoleti, tafadhali. Lucas: The server says 'Bei gani?' and you ask 'Bei gani ya keki?' They say 'Keki ni shilingi elfu moja.' You say 'Sawa, asante.' Okay, thanks. Luna: So I'd say 'Nataka keki ya chokoleti, tafadhali.' Then 'Bei gani ya keki?' If they say 'Elfu moja,' I say 'Sawa, asante.' Lucas: Flawless. Let's practice the phrases once more. Repeat after me: Nataka keki. Luna: Nataka keki. Lucas: Keki ya chokoleti. Luna: Keki ya chokoleti. Lucas: Keki ya machungwa. Luna: Keki ya machungwa. Lucas: Keki moja, tafadhali. Luna: Keki moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani ya keki? Luna: Bei gani ya keki? Lucas: Keki ni shilingi elfu moja. Luna: Keki ni shilingi elfu moja. Lucas: You've got it. Now you can confidently order cake at a café in Swahili. Practice these phrases, and next time you're out, give them a try. Luna: I'm going to practice ordering cake all week. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. That's it for episode 156. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Swahili with Fexingo.
