- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to the twenty twenty three Patriots Unfiltered Draft Show
- 0:14Speaker 2: presented by Aristocrat Gaming.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Is your worth moving up?
- 0:20Speaker 4: For?
- 0:20Speaker 5: They kind of are? And he moved my needle a
- 0:24Speaker 5: little more.
- 0:25Speaker 6: You keep your needle, work your lighthouse. Your lighthouse get bigger.
- 0:28Speaker 5: With this draft. My lighthouse just keeps getting bigger. I
- 0:30Speaker 5: don't know the Patriots set to take linebacker Marty Mapook.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Okay, I don't know that.
- 0:36Speaker 6: Joe says. Evan is doing a great job. He seems
- 0:39Speaker 6: to be on another level of expertise. His nonsense could
- 0:42Speaker 6: use a little word, a little too professional. Can we
- 0:45Speaker 6: fight about tides or something?
- 0:47Speaker 3: I was told Sasta couldn't score goals?
- 0:49Speaker 7: That's your show is that's ridiculous? No one ever says
- 0:54Speaker 7: he can't. A guy with sixty goals can't score a goal?
- 0:56Speaker 7: Where where is he?
- 0:58Speaker 8: Well?
- 0:58Speaker 7: Where is he?
- 0:58Speaker 6: Ben?
- 0:59Speaker 7: He's had a terrible scene. Are they're supposed to pretend
- 1:01Speaker 7: he's played?
- 1:01Speaker 6: Well?
- 1:02Speaker 7: Now you're just making crap up? Sixty goals can't score?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yes, your show said that you're a very defensive brand.
- 1:09Speaker 2: My god, this is the twenty twenty three Patriots Unfiltered
- 1:12Speaker 2: Draft Show presented by Aristocrat Gaming.
- 1:17Speaker 6: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, the twenty twenty three
- 1:20Speaker 6: Draft Extravaganza. It's day three. We're alive at Gillette Stadium.
- 1:25Speaker 6: It's me. It's Mike Dussau, Evan Lazarre, Paul Pirillo, Matt
- 1:30Speaker 6: Lapan and Matt Morrell and the booth. And we'll be
- 1:32Speaker 6: here for two hours until four o'clock Eastern time, catching
- 1:36Speaker 6: you up with everything that the Patriots have done since
- 1:38Speaker 6: we signed off last night and what they're doing today. Uh,
- 1:42Speaker 6: and we do have some picks made today in the
- 1:45Speaker 6: fourth and fifth round. So who wants to be the well,
- 1:48Speaker 6: the bearer of good news.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I mean, I'll set it up for maybe Evan, but
- 1:51Speaker 5: I think everybody would be happy. They've addressed the offense
- 1:53Speaker 5: today a little bit.
- 1:55Speaker 3: That's that's a Joe cram, just like they're.
- 1:59Speaker 5: It was a Joe I'll do it. I'll do it.
- 2:02Speaker 5: So they grabbed a couple offensive linemen, Jake Andrews the center,
- 2:05Speaker 5: and then they grabbed the kicker as well, Chad Ryland
- 2:08Speaker 5: one twelve and City soo was the other offensive lineman
- 2:11Speaker 5: a guard. So I mean, I do think that they
- 2:13Speaker 5: needed some interior depth. And then I'm gonna preface this
- 2:16Speaker 5: with you know, I know everybody was longing for tight
- 2:18Speaker 5: ends and wide receivers and I'm right with you, and
- 2:20Speaker 5: even maybe tackles. But I do think it's worth saying
- 2:22Speaker 5: that they didn't really have any depth behind their interior
- 2:25Speaker 5: offensive line. So I look, we can talk about was
- 2:27Speaker 5: this the right time for these guys, and YadA, YadA, YadA,
- 2:30Speaker 5: but I do think a little bit of a need.
- 2:32Speaker 6: Yeah, are you surprised in the fourth round they picked
- 2:36Speaker 6: a kicker place kicker?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Not really. That's the only thing that didn't surprise me
- 2:41Speaker 3: about their fourth round is that they took a kicker.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I'm gonna go the other way, Mike. I canna allow
- 2:45Speaker 3: you to spend the positive side of it barely. This
- 2:49Speaker 3: fourth round is quite frankly, it's a major disappointment. I'm
- 2:55Speaker 3: gonna put it to people that way. It's a major disappointment.
- 2:58Speaker 3: We can prepare a year or two ahead at center
- 3:02Speaker 3: and guard, but god forbid, we prepare for right now
- 3:05Speaker 3: at any position on the offensive side of the ball.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Not a single one of these players that they drafted
- 3:10Speaker 3: in the fourth round is gonna help the twenty twenty
- 3:11Speaker 3: three offense. And if they have to help the twenty
- 3:13Speaker 3: twenty three offense, then somebody got hurt that you don't
- 3:16Speaker 3: want getting hurt. That means that David Andrews or Mike
- 3:19Speaker 3: on Wenu or Cole Strange is not in the lineup
- 3:22Speaker 3: for some reason. So these guys that they've drafted, I
- 3:25Speaker 3: there's things to like about both players City Sow and
- 3:29Speaker 3: Jake Andrews, but where is the help in the for
- 3:32Speaker 3: twenty twenty three? And if your reasoning is the reasoning
- 3:35Speaker 3: that Bill Belichick gave us last night, which is that
- 3:38Speaker 3: our additions in free agency were on offense, your additions
- 3:42Speaker 3: in free agency that were on offense don't scare anybody.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Nobody's staying up at night thinking about Juju Smith Schuster.
- 3:48Speaker 3: So the additions that they've made on offense in the
- 3:50Speaker 3: draft are for twenty twenty four and beyond. They have
- 3:53Speaker 3: nothing to do with this season. And they're still, for
- 3:56Speaker 3: some reason, allergic to drafting a pass catcher. If you're
- 3:58Speaker 3: gonna draft lineman, fine, at least have to tackle because
- 4:01Speaker 3: that guy might actually be able to beat somebody out
- 4:04Speaker 3: and play this year. But they didn't even do that.
- 4:06Speaker 3: They went in the interior of the offensive line. It's
- 4:08Speaker 3: overly frustrating. I've been wrapping my head around day two,
- 4:14Speaker 3: sold on some of the things that they did yesterday,
- 4:16Speaker 3: maybe a little bit more than I was and we
- 4:17Speaker 3: were on air, but this just put me right back
- 4:20Speaker 3: down to the dumps.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Now.
- 4:21Speaker 6: I hear what you're saying day two. I like what
- 4:26Speaker 6: they did Day two. I think they tried to move
- 4:29Speaker 6: up to get a tackle on Day two and they
- 4:31Speaker 6: couldn't do it. So I think where they settled. I
- 4:34Speaker 6: think those three guys possibly can help the team in
- 4:40Speaker 6: twenty twenty three, the first three guys that they've picked.
- 4:44Speaker 6: So I like what they've done the first two days.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Today is just you know, it's just whatever.
- 4:52Speaker 7: Yeah, I just want to mention that I believe the
- 4:55Speaker 7: Patriots are actually on the club.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Yeah, the Patriots Jets just picked. So the Patriots with
- 5:00Speaker 6: the tenth pick in the fifth round.
- 5:02Speaker 7: The only fifth round pick to their scheduled to have
- 5:04Speaker 7: right now. Now they have a bunch of sitting round hunter. Yeah,
- 5:07Speaker 7: they do have a bunch of sixth rounders, so maybe
- 5:09Speaker 7: there's a you know, a slide up and you get
- 5:11Speaker 7: another pick in the fifth round somewhere here. But I would,
- 5:14Speaker 7: you know, maybe not as strongly as Evan put it,
- 5:16Speaker 7: but I would share his disappointment. I don't think. I don't.
- 5:20Speaker 7: I don't think much was done to help the current
- 5:23Speaker 7: team beyond really Christian McCaffrey and to a lesser extent,
- 5:26Speaker 7: key On White, I think that I mean Christian Gonzales.
- 5:30Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Christian Gonzalees. What happened that news Christian Gonzalez,
- 5:35Speaker 7: I my apologize, but in key On White, but I
- 5:41Speaker 7: think the the other kid, uh Maphu, to me is
- 5:45Speaker 7: a big time projection. I don't see that being a
- 5:50Speaker 7: big part of the team. And then nothing in the
- 5:53Speaker 7: fourth round beyond the kicker. And I agree with Evan
- 5:56Speaker 7: that it's not surprising that they took a kicker, but
- 5:58Speaker 7: to trade up for a kicker, to me and the
- 6:01Speaker 7: second kicker at that.
- 6:03Speaker 5: The kicker was the best pick of the round.
- 6:05Speaker 7: I just, I mean, I just I don't really, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 7: I don't really get it.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I just the Patriots I wanted to see.
- 6:12Speaker 7: I wanted to see at least some help on offense,
- 6:16Speaker 7: and like Evan said, that the players they took on
- 6:20Speaker 7: offense aren't going to be helpful in twenty three.
- 6:23Speaker 6: Yeah, like I said, I think they I'm pretty sure
- 6:26Speaker 6: they did try to move up to get a tackle
- 6:29Speaker 6: and it didn't work out.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Okay, But but can we not let them off the
- 6:32Speaker 3: hook for that? Because if they wouldn't let go of
- 6:34Speaker 3: the one hundred and eighty fourth pick in the draft
- 6:37Speaker 3: to make it work out so they can go get
- 6:39Speaker 3: a tackle that might actually be able to start next
- 6:41Speaker 3: year for this team, then I'm sorry, I'm not going
- 6:43Speaker 3: to let them off the hook for that. Like that,
- 6:45Speaker 3: we can do it. I know you can't include a
- 6:48Speaker 3: sixth round picking the deal to get it done or
- 6:50Speaker 3: to get it over the hump. I don't understand how
- 6:52Speaker 3: that that. How did you not.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Get it done?
- 6:55Speaker 3: Was there no trade partner or did you just not
- 6:58Speaker 3: want to give up what they were ask.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I don't know why, Like you said, were they not
- 7:04Speaker 6: willing to give up what it took, or you know
- 7:08Speaker 6: who they were talking to wasn't willing to make a
- 7:10Speaker 6: trade just period. So I don't know, but I do
- 7:13Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure there was an effort to move up,
- 7:16Speaker 6: but and it didn't work out that said, like I said,
- 7:19Speaker 6: I think days one and two, I think they got
- 7:22Speaker 6: three guys that I know you don't think Mapu. I
- 7:25Speaker 6: think I think they think he's going to be able
- 7:28Speaker 6: to contribute.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Think that yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 6: With his versatility, I think that in today's NFL he
- 7:35Speaker 6: has a role.
- 7:36Speaker 7: I think that's special.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I don't want to jump into this right as they
- 7:40Speaker 5: make Oh I like that pick. Actually yeah, no, this
- 7:43Speaker 5: is that's a good pick.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So what's doing here?
- 7:47Speaker 6: Roy?
- 7:48Speaker 7: That's not who the pay.
- 7:51Speaker 9: Was?
- 7:51Speaker 5: A tribal guy.
- 7:52Speaker 3: A really good week at the Shrine Bowl. On the
- 7:56Speaker 3: Patriots side of things, another guard problem. But you just
- 8:00Speaker 3: took to Now we're taking three interior offensive linemen, three interior.
- 8:05Speaker 5: First round or last year, and you have Michael and
- 8:06Speaker 5: who might be and Mafia's best player on your team.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Mafi is the best one out of all the three
- 8:11Speaker 3: that they've taken, and I think that he's somebody that
- 8:13Speaker 3: could actually start for you down the line. But why,
- 8:17Speaker 3: what are they what is wrong with this with taking
- 8:19Speaker 3: a pass catcher or a tackle Like, I just don't
- 8:23Speaker 3: understand where what the plan is with any of these guys.
- 8:26Speaker 3: If you take three interior offensive lineman, the fourth and
- 8:28Speaker 3: fifth round. At least one of these guys isn't even
- 8:30Speaker 3: making the team now, like how many of them are
- 8:32Speaker 3: going to carry on the on the roster. You already
- 8:35Speaker 3: have what four or five tackles that you're thinking of
- 8:38Speaker 3: carrying on the roster because of the guys they added
- 8:40Speaker 3: in free agency.
- 8:41Speaker 5: So I just, I mean, I'm beside it. It seems
- 8:44Speaker 5: that Michael, and when you's gone right like this, this,
- 8:46Speaker 5: I mean, why would you resign him now at this point?
- 8:48Speaker 5: I mean that's a development you know?
- 8:50Speaker 7: Maybe yeah, and there is he was a Shrine Bowl guy, right?
- 8:53Speaker 7: Did you just mention?
- 8:57Speaker 3: Maybe maybe you're right, Mike.
- 8:58Speaker 7: Maybe they've already sort of sat down with Michael owen
- 9:01Speaker 7: U and they've already in their mind saying, well, we're
- 9:04Speaker 7: not going to design this guy. Yeah, And in some
- 9:07Speaker 7: ways I would respect that because it wouldn't be repeating
- 9:10Speaker 7: what I think was an error from about three or
- 9:12Speaker 7: four years ago when you invested all that money in
- 9:15Speaker 7: Shack Mason and Joe Toney, two really really good players,
- 9:19Speaker 7: Tony and Mason, really really good players. But you'd like
- 9:22Speaker 7: to think you wouldn't have to invest that kind of
- 9:26Speaker 7: capital in your your two guards. And maybe they've looked
- 9:29Speaker 7: out of that and said we don't want to go
- 9:31Speaker 7: down that road again. I don't know, Like I kind
- 9:35Speaker 7: of agree with Evans's point though, like why can't you
- 9:38Speaker 7: have like an extra tight end who might actually get
- 9:42Speaker 7: on the field. It's just, you know, not not due
- 9:44Speaker 7: to injury. He might get on the field because he's
- 9:47Speaker 7: just warrants playing time as opposed to you know, fourth
- 9:50Speaker 7: and fifth round interior offensive lineman's that in a perfect
- 9:53Speaker 7: world won't mean some of these guys won't even be
- 9:56Speaker 7: on the roster. They'll be practice squad guys.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Then that's where're at. And I mean they still got
- 10:00Speaker 5: five more picks to go. I just I mean to
- 10:03Speaker 5: point out what I said before we went on the air.
- 10:05Speaker 5: I mean, you look at twenty twenty four, there's no
- 10:07Speaker 5: starting left tackle, starting right guards, starting right tackle. You're
- 10:10Speaker 5: gonna lose both tight ends. I mean their contracts are up,
- 10:12Speaker 5: and the only receivers on a contractor Thornton and Smith Schuster.
- 10:15Speaker 5: So I mean those are just you know, you talk
- 10:17Speaker 5: about having being forced now to have to go get
- 10:20Speaker 5: guys at certain positions because you're not stocking them long term.
- 10:23Speaker 5: That's multiple very important positions that have no real long
- 10:26Speaker 5: term plan. They're just kind of empty right.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Now and for the after and for twenty three. You're
- 10:30Speaker 7: now saying that Connor McDermott, Riley Reef, Calvin Anderson or Yadneykadus,
- 10:37Speaker 7: is that one of them, one of those guys is
- 10:38Speaker 7: going to be a start.
- 10:39Speaker 5: And the other one is probably the third tackle and
- 10:41Speaker 5: who's probably gonna block because.
- 10:43Speaker 3: End and the other guy is gonna play.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Yep.
- 10:44Speaker 7: Yeah, two of those four are gonna be I would
- 10:48Speaker 7: say key members of your offensive line, because that sixth
- 10:51Speaker 7: offensive lineman is usually a swing tackle. That's generally an
- 10:54Speaker 7: important spot, yep. Because you don't have a lot of
- 10:57Speaker 7: teams that go wire to wire with five guys.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Really well, hey, let me tough.
- 11:02Speaker 7: That's asking a lot.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I think, I just don't I guess my my whole
- 11:07Speaker 3: thing to calmly say it now rationally, why is it
- 11:13Speaker 3: okay to prepare your head in all walks of life
- 11:17Speaker 3: at the interior offensive line positions? Now, you've got three
- 11:19Speaker 3: guys to prepare your head, But we can't prepare your
- 11:23Speaker 3: head at receiver or tight end or tackle like you can't.
- 11:27Speaker 3: So you see that you have a need down the
- 11:29Speaker 3: line at those positions, but the other positions don't matter
- 11:32Speaker 3: when you've made now four picks in this range of
- 11:34Speaker 3: the draft. So I just, I guess I just don't
- 11:38Speaker 3: understand like that. If you're using that school of thought
- 11:42Speaker 3: that these guys are here to potentially replace people in
- 11:44Speaker 3: twenty twenty four and beyond, then how does that not
- 11:47Speaker 3: apply to the other positions on the roster When you
- 11:50Speaker 3: have Hunter Henry and Mike Koseki are under contract just
- 11:53Speaker 3: for this season and you still haven't drafted tight end.
- 11:56Speaker 3: You mentioned that they only have what two receivers under
- 11:58Speaker 3: contract if for twenty twenty four, So where's the depth there?
- 12:03Speaker 6: Where?
- 12:04Speaker 3: Where is the guys under contract there? Because now we
- 12:06Speaker 3: got six interior offensive linemen that we have under contract.
- 12:10Speaker 7: So I was just I'm sorry, Mike. And this is
- 12:13Speaker 7: a year after they took a couple of offensive linemen
- 12:15Speaker 7: at you know, late in the draft for the same reason. Yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 7: you know, guys like Chasing Hines.
- 12:19Speaker 5: How many super interior offensive line over the last three years.
- 12:24Speaker 7: I mean, this is something they've done a lot of
- 12:26Speaker 7: and haven't been overly successful lately. They have some real hits,
- 12:30Speaker 7: you know, like Jack Mason was a fourth round pick
- 12:32Speaker 7: once upon a time. You know, Ted Karris was a
- 12:34Speaker 7: sixth round pick once upon a time. But they've had, ay,
- 12:38Speaker 7: every team drafts backup potential backup offensive lineman in Day three.
- 12:44Speaker 7: But they've done it a lot, and I don't think
- 12:47Speaker 7: that they've hit on as many as people think. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 7: based on what I'm reading on Twitter, and I think.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Before today started, I kind of came to peace with that.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I just didn't think that they were going to be
- 12:56Speaker 5: able to get any offensive weapon type player that could
- 13:00Speaker 5: contribute this year. And you know, so in a way,
- 13:03Speaker 5: it's like, all right, it seems like maybe their philosophy
- 13:05Speaker 5: is that we're just gonna surround Mac with vets and
- 13:08Speaker 5: try to try to do it that way. But when
- 13:10Speaker 5: you look at it through that prism of twenty twenty four,
- 13:14Speaker 5: and you're saying, all right, so now you're telling me,
- 13:16Speaker 5: if Thornton doesn't have a great year and Schuster doesn't
- 13:18Speaker 5: have a great year, you're probably gonna have to start
- 13:21Speaker 5: over at the receiver position for Mac. Like you're gonna
- 13:24Speaker 5: have to like go out there. I mean, I think
- 13:25Speaker 5: everybody could could agree with you must have just start
- 13:28Speaker 5: over at the quarterback position because your quarterback might not
- 13:31Speaker 5: play well enough to sell yourself on him for another year.
- 13:33Speaker 5: But but but, like just to push back a little
- 13:35Speaker 5: bit on that, was there anybody they were going to
- 13:37Speaker 5: take in the last two hours that was gonna change that?
- 13:40Speaker 5: You know, Like I think that ship out of sales
- 13:42Speaker 5: by the time we got here today. You know, I
- 13:44Speaker 5: totally get the point, but not to me. I just
- 13:47Speaker 5: think everybody's ship is not Mac a guy that like
- 13:49Speaker 5: he can grow with. And it just it feels like
- 13:51Speaker 5: the guy he loved most, Jacoby Myers, is gone. It's
- 13:54Speaker 5: hard for him. It's just it's hard to like provide
- 13:57Speaker 5: some kind of continuity for him to say, all right,
- 14:00Speaker 5: this guy's gonna be here.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I the ship is sailed on terms of
- 14:05Speaker 3: game changer, explosive, three level guys. But you just mentioned
- 14:09Speaker 3: Jacoby Myers. There is a slew of Jacoby myers is
- 14:13Speaker 3: that are either still on the board or were on
- 14:15Speaker 3: the board at the time that they've made these last
- 14:17Speaker 3: couple of picks. I've been patting the table for a
- 14:20Speaker 3: guy like Charlie Jones, who went to Cincinnati Shocker. You know,
- 14:22Speaker 3: team that knows good wide receivers took Charlie Jones that
- 14:26Speaker 3: that's a player that I think could come in here.
- 14:28Speaker 3: They are envisioning him as somebody that replaced Tyler Boyd
- 14:31Speaker 3: in the slot, as an inside guy that would have
- 14:35Speaker 3: came in here and done the same thing in New England.
- 14:37Speaker 3: So I think there are still guys out there that
- 14:39Speaker 3: can do that. Fred, your guy Bryce Ford Wheaton is
- 14:41Speaker 3: now near the top of the board in terms of
- 14:43Speaker 3: athleticism and upside. He certainly has it. But I don't
- 14:47Speaker 3: want to hear that they that you, oh, there's nobody
- 14:50Speaker 3: there anymore, Like, No, that's not true. There are guys
- 14:53Speaker 3: there and you throw the name in the hat on
- 14:55Speaker 3: saying any of them are going to come in and
- 14:57Speaker 3: be day one starters for your team. But they're guys
- 15:00Speaker 3: that have talent, that have skill sets that it can
- 15:02Speaker 3: be NFL players and you throw them in on in
- 15:05Speaker 3: training camp and see what you get out of him.
- 15:07Speaker 3: You still got to take guys even though you know
- 15:09Speaker 3: they're not necessarily going to be day one game changing
- 15:13Speaker 3: impact players. Do you think do you think it's possible?
- 15:15Speaker 5: And when you goes back to right tackle, because that
- 15:17Speaker 5: almost seems to make more sense than any of all
- 15:20Speaker 5: of this it's just a log jam at guard.
- 15:22Speaker 3: It's good, don't It's a good outside the box though.
- 15:24Speaker 6: It's a good thought, ye something to say?
- 15:26Speaker 5: Do you like that that idea? I don't really care
- 15:30Speaker 5: because I just don't think any of like me.
- 15:32Speaker 7: I feel I feel better about one of that group
- 15:36Speaker 7: of tackles playing right tackle, then these guys plugging in
- 15:40Speaker 7: and playing left guard.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Right guy right right right. A rookie fifth rounder is
- 15:44Speaker 5: not going to do it on when you did. I
- 15:46Speaker 5: mean you might be lucky to find that.
- 15:47Speaker 7: Now the uh what's it? Mafi Antonio Mafi right? Yes,
- 15:51Speaker 7: he's a uh a Sarah High School graduate? Oh all right,
- 15:56Speaker 7: Sarah High School? Sure, so what could go wrong? Also
- 16:00Speaker 7: serious rugby player. From what I'm reading on the Twitter machine,
- 16:03Speaker 7: they bill just can't help.
- 16:05Speaker 5: They got a type. They got a type that tackle
- 16:07Speaker 5: to These guys are all built like on one you
- 16:08Speaker 5: you know, they're all just like six to three and
- 16:10Speaker 5: a square.
- 16:11Speaker 7: That's different.
- 16:12Speaker 3: I actually really like it too, Mafe.
- 16:14Speaker 7: Everything I've read about him, this is exactly where everybody
- 16:16Speaker 7: thought he should be drafted. So that makes me.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Like the pick. I know.
- 16:19Speaker 5: I actually really liked him in Vegas too.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I thought he was one of the best offensive lineman
- 16:23Speaker 3: at the Shrine Bowl when Alex and I were out there,
- 16:26Speaker 3: I just didn't need the other two guys on top
- 16:27Speaker 3: of it, like you know, he just yeah, just take
- 16:29Speaker 3: I understand, take one or two of them, don't take three.
- 16:32Speaker 3: I mean it. It doesn't need to be like this,
- 16:34Speaker 3: Like he's the best one out of the group, I think.
- 16:37Speaker 7: And someone you think about right tackle there, dude, somebody's listening.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Someone's listening, nothing like playing.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Well, they're going to upright that.
- 16:46Speaker 5: I mean, I guess they were going to try to
- 16:48Speaker 5: throw it all at the wall here. Apparently on the
- 16:50Speaker 5: offensive line. It really does have to figure it out.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Let's get a bunch of fifth round picks and see
- 16:53Speaker 3: if we can keep him. No, I'm just kidding. I
- 16:56Speaker 3: just odd odd.
- 16:57Speaker 5: I just wanted to to go back though for a second,
- 17:00Speaker 5: because because last night I did kind of jump more
- 17:02Speaker 5: into the two guys that they took yesterday. And I
- 17:06Speaker 5: have to say that.
- 17:07Speaker 6: You actually had a chance to meet them.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I did.
- 17:08Speaker 5: I did, and and I don't want anyone to think.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I know it's my thing that when I meet a
- 17:12Speaker 5: guy and he's nice to me, that I like them.
- 17:13Speaker 5: All of a sudden But but I will say I
- 17:17Speaker 5: I really kind of like this Mampu kid. And I
- 17:19Speaker 5: think what Paul said is right. He's an FCS kid
- 17:21Speaker 5: and it's like with Dugger. But I just he's fun
- 17:24Speaker 5: to watch. He's fun to watch. He's super athletic, he's
- 17:27Speaker 5: super aggressive. He seems like he's completely obsessed with football.
- 17:31Speaker 5: Is he redundant? Maybe a little bit, But if I
- 17:35Speaker 5: can see why they like him, and I'm a little
- 17:37Speaker 5: bit intrigued, where.
- 17:38Speaker 7: Are you playing it?
- 17:39Speaker 4: On?
- 17:39Speaker 6: Playing him?
- 17:40Speaker 5: Maybe linebacker?
- 17:41Speaker 6: I don't think.
- 17:41Speaker 7: I don't think he's redundant. Then I don't think they
- 17:43Speaker 7: have that kind of player. And that's the question.
- 17:46Speaker 6: That's what question, Paul. I think they look at him
- 17:49Speaker 6: and think he's got the tools to be We want
- 17:52Speaker 6: to be versatile, we want to be multiple on defense,
- 17:55Speaker 6: and this is the kind of guy that allows us
- 17:57Speaker 6: to do that.
- 17:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I just don't think he's like it's
- 18:00Speaker 7: I mean, based on the projections, I don't think he's
- 18:02Speaker 7: that good.
- 18:03Speaker 5: It's it's it's totally reasonable to say, you know, he's
- 18:05Speaker 5: a small school kid and this is a big jump,
- 18:07Speaker 5: and to think that he's going to be anything close
- 18:09Speaker 5: to the player he was in the FCS to hear
- 18:12Speaker 5: it might be a stretch, but I mean, I know,
- 18:14Speaker 5: I know Evan has similar thoughts of just that idea
- 18:19Speaker 5: of him, and we talked about it so much, you know,
- 18:22Speaker 5: And and he's just like I used to say all
- 18:24Speaker 5: the time, like this is a place for football nerds,
- 18:26Speaker 5: Like if you're obsessed with football, this is the place
- 18:29Speaker 5: for you.
- 18:29Speaker 3: If that's all.
- 18:29Speaker 5: And you heard him last night, that's what he is.
- 18:32Speaker 5: So I'm just intrigued by him. As for Keon White,
- 18:35Speaker 5: I wanted to go in being like, all right, I
- 18:38Speaker 5: get it now, and and to some extent I do.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I feel like if in success, he's a big, movable
- 18:43Speaker 5: piece on the front of the line that's going to
- 18:44Speaker 5: be more athletic than like a Lawrence guy, maybe a
- 18:46Speaker 5: little bit more powerful than Tetrich wise, But what I
- 18:50Speaker 5: didn't quite see was just those flashes of dominant power
- 18:53Speaker 5: where you're like, oh, boy, this is because he looks
- 18:55Speaker 5: the part. You look at his face and you're like,
- 18:57Speaker 5: this guy looks like he should be messing guys up
- 18:59Speaker 5: on the offensive line. And a lot of times I
- 19:01Speaker 5: felt like ball would have been out. You know, he
- 19:03Speaker 5: bull rushes this guy, but it takes four seconds to
- 19:05Speaker 5: actually get there, so not quite as like swinging.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Oh.
- 19:09Speaker 5: I think this is great to trumpet it, but I
- 19:11Speaker 5: think that there possibly could be something there with Mapoo
- 19:13Speaker 5: if he can make the jump.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Yeah. I didn't even bother watching Mapoo at Sacramento State
- 19:17Speaker 3: because quite frankly, I don't really care what he did
- 19:19Speaker 3: at Sacramento State. But his film at the Senior Bowl
- 19:22Speaker 3: was fantastic, and I think the things that you notice
- 19:24Speaker 3: about him, we were talking about it on the way
- 19:27Speaker 3: down here, Deuce is just he's got those little, quick twitch,
- 19:30Speaker 3: explosive movements where when he moves you can just see
- 19:33Speaker 3: it kind of suddenly changing directions and clicking into things.
- 19:37Speaker 3: He's got great closing bursts going downhill as well. He
- 19:40Speaker 3: made a couple plays at the Senior Bowl, one where
- 19:43Speaker 3: it's a lead play with the full back and he
- 19:45Speaker 3: just takes out the full back. He just goes right
- 19:48Speaker 3: downhill at the full back and blows up the entire
- 19:50Speaker 3: play by taking out the full back. And then you
- 19:52Speaker 3: have some real athleticism and change of direction ability and
- 19:56Speaker 3: coverage as well. He's a linebacker. He's a second level player,
- 20:00Speaker 3: and I think the only concerns that I have about
- 20:02Speaker 3: him are one that the peck like that's gonna be
- 20:05Speaker 3: a thing that is gonna plague him his rookie season
- 20:07Speaker 3: in terms of development. Is he going to be able
- 20:10Speaker 3: to absorb enough information to contribute in twenty twenty three
- 20:13Speaker 3: if he doesn't start camp right away.
- 20:15Speaker 5: The other thing is it's them.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Are they going to play a two hundred and twenty
- 20:18Speaker 3: pound linebacker a lot like? Is he going to be
- 20:21Speaker 3: somebody that they are going to be willing to take
- 20:24Speaker 3: a Jalani to vie off the field and put a
- 20:27Speaker 3: two hundred and twenty pound linebacker on the field. I
- 20:30Speaker 3: am not convinced that they will do that yet until
- 20:33Speaker 3: I see it. If they I see what they see
- 20:36Speaker 3: in Mapu, I see what every A lot of people,
- 20:38Speaker 3: you know, Daniel Jeremiah, smart people than me, have said
- 20:41Speaker 3: this kid is a diamond in the rough. They really
- 20:43Speaker 3: found something here with Mapu, and I agree. But is
- 20:47Speaker 3: Bill a type of coach that's going to put that
- 20:51Speaker 3: skill set?
- 20:51Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 20:52Speaker 3: On first down?
- 20:53Speaker 6: Bill was you know, he talked last night and we
- 20:56Speaker 6: should probably talk about that a little later too. His
- 20:58Speaker 6: comments last tonight, but you know he mentioned, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 6: he was asked about, you know, where do you play
- 21:03Speaker 6: this guy? And you know, Bill said, you know, he's
- 21:05Speaker 6: already thinking ahead, and he's you know, it just depends
- 21:07Speaker 6: on the opponent in the matchup. And I, like I said,
- 21:10Speaker 6: I I do think that there are certain situations and
- 21:13Speaker 6: these guy's not going to be on the field all
- 21:15Speaker 6: the time, that he can help this team this year
- 21:18Speaker 6: on defense, not just special teams. Paul, you know, against
- 21:22Speaker 6: certain opponents and in certain situations.
- 21:25Speaker 7: I think you're arguing with me. I'm not really arguing.
- 21:27Speaker 7: I have no doubt that they think that.
- 21:28Speaker 6: No, but every time I said that, he said, yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 6: that's special teams.
- 21:30Speaker 7: That's what I think he'll be. I know, but but
- 21:32Speaker 7: I don't think that they drafted a guy in the
- 21:34Speaker 7: third round that they think is going to be a
- 21:35Speaker 7: special team So I hope not.
- 21:36Speaker 5: I think they think he can fill a role on defense.
- 21:39Speaker 3: I think I would fill a role on defense based
- 21:41Speaker 3: off of what he did at the Senior Bowl. But
- 21:44Speaker 3: what role is that to them?
- 21:45Speaker 7: They've got the Johns, not any man there as big
- 21:47Speaker 7: on the Senior Bowl as they are, Let's just put
- 21:49Speaker 7: it that way.
- 21:50Speaker 5: What role is that to them?
- 21:52Speaker 3: With a guy like Mac Wilson comes in here last
- 21:54Speaker 3: year and he had inconsistencies in the same way that
- 21:57Speaker 3: I think MAPU will in their system. Map Who's one
- 22:00Speaker 3: big thing, even at the Senior Bowl, is that he's
- 22:03Speaker 3: a little bit raw in terms of his ability to
- 22:06Speaker 3: diagnose plays. He sometimes gets pulled out of the out
- 22:09Speaker 3: of a you know, passing lanes, or is a step late.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But he's quick and fastened so he can recover quickly.
- 22:15Speaker 3: But to them it's you know, like what we saw
- 22:18Speaker 3: last year with Mack Wilson, with Lamar Jackson, right, they
- 22:20Speaker 3: put him in a blender and he didn't know where
- 22:22Speaker 3: he was going and then we never see him again.
- 22:25Speaker 6: See that's where like that kind of worries me. The
- 22:29Speaker 6: slow to diagnose, because I think in my mind, where
- 22:32Speaker 6: he helps you is to be that key reader out
- 22:35Speaker 6: there that he can adjust what he sees and you know,
- 22:39Speaker 6: get to the play quick quickly, whether it's pass run
- 22:42Speaker 6: you know, whether the Patriots are in zon or man
- 22:45Speaker 6: you know. And but he has to be that guy
- 22:48Speaker 6: in the field that covers a lot of ground quickly.
- 22:51Speaker 3: He's the opposite. His his ability is that once he
- 22:55Speaker 3: clicks in, he's shot out of a can into the football,
- 22:58Speaker 3: but it seemed like it took him a couple of seconds. Now, granted,
- 23:01Speaker 3: at jumping speed at the Senior Bowl, you're thrown right
- 23:04Speaker 3: into a brand new defensive system. To you, you're you're
- 23:07Speaker 3: not studying the offense coming into the into the week
- 23:10Speaker 3: that you know what you know their keys are, what
- 23:13Speaker 3: their lineman do and play action and things like that.
- 23:15Speaker 3: So maybe with that coaching behind the scenes they can
- 23:18Speaker 3: help them out in that regard. But the other thing
- 23:21Speaker 3: that you know stood out was there was one rep
- 23:24Speaker 3: or where John Michael Schmid's the center from Minnesota, I
- 23:27Speaker 3: think got drafted last night to screen pass and he
- 23:30Speaker 3: runs them over. And I'm just thinking to myself, if
- 23:34Speaker 3: he gets run over in practice by David Andrews or
- 23:37Speaker 3: Mike on Winno on a screen, they're gonna sit his
- 23:40Speaker 3: butt on the bench. They're gonna say, no, we can't
- 23:42Speaker 3: do this. We can't have a guy that's gonna get
- 23:45Speaker 3: run over in the open field because we're the Patriots
- 23:47Speaker 3: and we like linebackers that are take on guys Juwan Bentley,
- 23:51Speaker 3: Landon Roberts like, that's our skill set, that's not Mapu's
- 23:54Speaker 3: skill set. So I love the player. I actually really am.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Out of all the players that they've picked, he's thrown
- 24:00Speaker 3: on me the most since they've picked him. But the
- 24:02Speaker 3: question is is are they going to Are they going
- 24:05Speaker 3: to conform. They've conformed in the draft by taking a
- 24:07Speaker 3: player like this, but are they gonna conform on the field?
- 24:10Speaker 6: And I wonder, you know what Gerard Mayo's role will
- 24:13Speaker 6: be with this guy? You know, because Gerard Mayo, we
- 24:17Speaker 6: all know, he was one of the smarter guys out there.
- 24:20Speaker 6: You know. Uh, they called him Little Bill. He loved
- 24:23Speaker 6: to watch film. You know, will one of his jobs
- 24:25Speaker 6: this year be to help this guy adjust to the
- 24:29Speaker 6: NFL and learn the defense and to make him a quicker,
- 24:32Speaker 6: you know, quicker out there mentally.
- 24:35Speaker 5: I mean, it's a great question. I mean, and that's
- 24:37Speaker 5: you know, I wish we had a chance to talk
- 24:38Speaker 5: to Gerald. We talked to him yesterday or two days ago.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I've lost track at this point. You know, I'm sure
- 24:44Speaker 5: that will be I I just think it's a big
- 24:46Speaker 5: jump to go from Sacramento State to the Senior Bowl.
- 24:49Speaker 5: You're not getting the coach those guys, so he's gonna
- 24:52Speaker 5: I mean, I think all everything Evan said is is
- 24:54Speaker 5: you know, not all that shocking for a player, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 5: to make that jump. Can he can he take the coaching.
- 25:00Speaker 5: The other point I would just make is, you know,
- 25:01Speaker 5: are the Patriots willing to sacrifice some of that physicality
- 25:06Speaker 5: for some speed and at a certain point, Hey, maybe
- 25:08Speaker 5: he's gonna get run over by a center, but maybe
- 25:09Speaker 5: he's also gonna get Lamar Jackson and beat him to
- 25:12Speaker 5: you know, to the corner and be able to yelling.
- 25:14Speaker 3: They need more speed, they need more His ability to
- 25:18Speaker 3: go downhill to either to run through a blocker or
- 25:21Speaker 3: run through the ball carrier is legit. This guy can
- 25:24Speaker 3: finish on the football. So I really like his game.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And I think the main thing is is that he's explosive.
- 25:30Speaker 3: He's an explosive linebacker. But he's a linebacker. He's not
- 25:33Speaker 3: a safety. I don't want him playing the deep part
- 25:35Speaker 3: of the field that he doesn't have that kind of
- 25:38Speaker 3: a straight line speed. But in terms of that just
- 25:41Speaker 3: what you need to be a linebacker in that phone
- 25:43Speaker 3: booth to make guys miss and then go ahead and
- 25:46Speaker 3: shoot out of the cannon and get the football. He's
- 25:48Speaker 3: got that skill.
- 25:50Speaker 6: I think maybe we also, I think we underplayed a
- 25:53Speaker 6: little bit Keon White. I think this guy is, you know,
- 26:00Speaker 6: nasty smart. I think I think he's another guy that
- 26:05Speaker 6: in this defense where you know, the more you can do.
- 26:09Speaker 6: They like versatile guys no matter where they are. He's
- 26:11Speaker 6: gonna be able to play a few positions up front
- 26:15Speaker 6: at at a fairly high level.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think too. And I made the
- 26:18Speaker 5: point last night, I brought up tight end, and I
- 26:20Speaker 5: think I think it was kind of mistook. It's just
- 26:22Speaker 5: that I think he's a little bit more new to
- 26:24Speaker 5: this side of the ball, and so I do think
- 26:25Speaker 5: that there is a little bit of a learning curve.
- 26:27Speaker 5: I just don't really know what to expect. He checks
- 26:29Speaker 5: a lot of boxes physically, versatility, the mean look on
- 26:34Speaker 5: his face that just comes as advertised. I mean, he
- 26:36Speaker 5: just looks like the guy you want coming off the
- 26:37Speaker 5: bus first. How's it all going to translate to the pros?
- 26:41Speaker 5: I just I don't know. I mean, it could go
- 26:43Speaker 5: kind of anyway for me. There's a lot of traits
- 26:44Speaker 5: to like I just don't see, like the overwhelming consistent
- 26:48Speaker 5: power that that is, you know, jumps off to the
- 26:51Speaker 5: tape when you put it on of him.
- 26:52Speaker 3: That's exactly how I felt watching him the first time
- 26:55Speaker 3: and the second time even before they drafted him, is
- 26:58Speaker 3: it just doesn't pop. It's just not I don't see
- 27:01Speaker 3: anything that's like, oh my goodness, this guy's does this
- 27:04Speaker 3: and it's so good.
- 27:05Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:05Speaker 3: But he's a solid, well rounded player. I think that
- 27:08Speaker 3: has a lot of athletic upside. I think I maybe
- 27:11Speaker 3: understold his his upside. I didn't realize how well he
- 27:14Speaker 3: actually tested at the combine. He tested extremely well for
- 27:18Speaker 3: a defensive lineman. And he does have some upside there
- 27:20Speaker 3: in terms of if he can learn technique, And he
- 27:23Speaker 3: talked about that last night when when the reporters had
- 27:26Speaker 3: him that you know, he is pretty raw still, you know,
- 27:28Speaker 3: in terms of technique and pass rush plan and diagnosing
- 27:32Speaker 3: things and things like that. So maybe they feel like
- 27:35Speaker 3: he just needs some seasoning and then they can maybe
- 27:37Speaker 3: get a little bit more out of him in terms
- 27:39Speaker 3: of splash.
- 27:39Speaker 5: Yeah, he doesn't, I mean, and he seems he seems
- 27:41Speaker 5: like a sharp guy too. The other thing, I mean,
- 27:43Speaker 5: he's not Trayvon Walker. Travon Walker was a freak with
- 27:45Speaker 5: freak measurables. But like I just I see him similar
- 27:49Speaker 5: like dreams of what Trayvon Walker would be in this
- 27:52Speaker 5: defense of you know, he would be like a b
- 27:54Speaker 5: version of that potentially like that kind.
- 27:56Speaker 3: I think the biggest a Walker, Trayvon Walker, was loose.
- 28:01Speaker 5: He was like six inch on. I mean, he was
- 28:04Speaker 5: a freak.
- 28:04Speaker 3: He's a flexible guy. This this The biggest thing about
- 28:08Speaker 3: Keon White to me is that he's a linear athlete.
- 28:10Speaker 3: He's stiff like he's he's a downhill player. He's not
- 28:14Speaker 3: somebody that you want moving side to side. If you
- 28:17Speaker 3: have him, you pin his ears back and run through
- 28:20Speaker 3: the pocket.
- 28:21Speaker 5: He can do that.
- 28:21Speaker 3: But if you're asking him to dance out there or
- 28:24Speaker 3: you know, be josh Uja and throw a bunch of
- 28:26Speaker 3: different moves on a guy and go around him, that's
- 28:28Speaker 3: just not really his game.
- 28:30Speaker 7: I thought last night when we talked about White, I
- 28:33Speaker 7: mean I thought we all sort of agreed that we
- 28:35Speaker 7: thought he was a good player. Yeah, I just didn't
- 28:37Speaker 7: know if we understood necessarily the need for the fit.
- 28:41Speaker 7: And we talked a little bit about Dietrich Wise and
- 28:44Speaker 7: you know, Fred had mentioned that he fell off a
- 28:45Speaker 7: little bit. You know, I think that's the kind of player.
- 28:48Speaker 7: But I think he can play. Yeah, I think he's
- 28:50Speaker 7: a good player. I think, yeah, you know it's exactly
- 28:53Speaker 7: where you know, most of the prognosticators, not that they
- 28:55Speaker 7: know it's exactly where that they had them slated. I
- 29:00Speaker 7: like the player. I'm just not sure how much they
- 29:02Speaker 7: needed that.
- 29:02Speaker 6: All Right, we're gonna take a break. When we come back,
- 29:05Speaker 6: get to your phone calls and emails, and we'll also

- 30:15Speaker 2: This is the twenty twenty three Patriots Unfiltered Draft Show,
- 30:19Speaker 2: presented by Aristocrat Gaming.
- 30:25Speaker 6: Right back here, Patriots Unfiltered. The Draft extravaganza will be
- 30:29Speaker 6: here until four o'clock. At three o'clock, we have to
- 30:33Speaker 6: shut off our cameras and go to just audio.
- 30:37Speaker 7: NF cameras were on.
- 30:38Speaker 6: Yeah, oh yeah, well you.
- 30:39Speaker 5: Wear your Sunday's best.
- 30:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:41Speaker 7: No, I didn't care about that, but this way address
- 30:43Speaker 7: every day. But I didn't realize that they were on.
- 30:46Speaker 7: I hope I didn't make any you know, nose pickings.
- 30:49Speaker 7: Well that eye rolls, no more like obscene gestures. Okay,
- 30:53Speaker 7: you know, get in trouble with team analysts.
- 30:56Speaker 6: Nate writes, since so looking through the lens of look
- 30:59Speaker 6: at what they do, not what they say. We are
- 31:01Speaker 6: going to use a committee approach to receiver. I don't
- 31:04Speaker 6: love it, but if we're dinking and dunking, we just
- 31:06Speaker 6: need guys to catch the ball and find soft spots.
- 31:09Speaker 6: We still want to have a run first offense, even
- 31:12Speaker 6: with Billy Oh being here making interior line depth a
- 31:15Speaker 6: little bit more important. BB wants to see if mat
- 31:18Speaker 6: can lift the talent around him like Brady did, to
- 31:20Speaker 6: see if he wants to move on. I don't think
- 31:22Speaker 6: it's fair, but I think his philosophy is just throwing
- 31:25Speaker 6: him in the deep end instead of teaching him to swim.
- 31:28Speaker 6: Defense is gonna be fine. It was fine last year.
- 31:31Speaker 6: I love the secondary as is. They make plays and
- 31:33Speaker 6: Bill will make sure he causes chaos for opposing offenses.
- 31:39Speaker 6: We got a guy similar to Judon, Kean White getting
- 31:42Speaker 6: in to get some new tools from Judon, which I
- 31:45Speaker 6: like a lot. I don't know what that means.
- 31:46Speaker 7: I don't think there's atween.
- 31:48Speaker 6: They have a very pliable defense in terms of formation.
- 31:51Speaker 6: I think they like to have a lot of options
- 31:53Speaker 6: depending on what the other team shows. I think if
- 31:56Speaker 6: we use the draft to phill holes, not give the
- 31:58Speaker 6: team a higher Madden rate. That's just how Bill seems
- 32:02Speaker 6: to draft. Not exciting, But in Bill, we trust.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Okay, I can't believe.
- 32:06Speaker 3: I can't believe we're still doing that.
- 32:07Speaker 7: Can I ask a question? And this is a legit question,
- 32:10Speaker 7: and this is not Paul snark, Why, if you're a
- 32:13Speaker 7: running team, is the need for depth in the interior
- 32:15Speaker 7: offensive line more important?
- 32:18Speaker 5: You got to make sure you can run the ball.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I've got to have some guards that can pull.
- 32:22Speaker 7: Backup, backup guard, right, he said, depth of interior offensive line?
- 32:26Speaker 7: Why is because because I gotta tell you, if I
- 32:29Speaker 7: want to drop back forty five or fifty times, I
- 32:31Speaker 7: want to make sure I have depth at my offensive
- 32:33Speaker 7: line just as much as I if I want to
- 32:35Speaker 7: run it thirty five or forty.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I actually his point about receivers by committee, I don't
- 32:40Speaker 3: necessarily see it that way. I personally think that they
- 32:44Speaker 3: are really banking on a year or two jump from
- 32:47Speaker 3: Taekwon Thornton, and then also that they really feel like
- 32:50Speaker 3: Juju Smith Schuster is a significant upgrade over Jacoby Myers. Again,
- 32:55Speaker 3: we all think I doubt that they think that. We
- 32:57Speaker 3: all think it's marginal. I think that he's a better player,
- 32:59Speaker 3: but marginally better. I think they might think that Juju
- 33:02Speaker 3: is in a different tier that I.
- 33:04Speaker 7: Think they got mad at Jakobe Myers last year. And
- 33:06Speaker 7: I'm dead serious when I say that. I think they
- 33:08Speaker 7: got mad and they got emotional, and that's impossible. I
- 33:12Speaker 7: think it's simple as that they're talking themselves into this
- 33:15Speaker 7: massive upgrade.
- 33:16Speaker 5: And Taekwon.
- 33:17Speaker 7: Now, the Thornton thing, I understand, like that's a second
- 33:20Speaker 7: round pick. Last year, he gets hurt, you know, in
- 33:22Speaker 7: the preseason, gets off to a little bit of a
- 33:24Speaker 7: slow start, never really found his footing. They probably feel
- 33:28Speaker 7: like there's there's some growth there and I can understand that. Yeah,
- 33:31Speaker 7: to me, Juju Smith Schuster is what he is at
- 33:33Speaker 7: this stage of his NFL career, fair like what he
- 33:36Speaker 7: is is what he is.
- 33:37Speaker 3: But the upside in that room is Taekwon, right like that,
- 33:40Speaker 3: because you're not adding upside in the draft.
- 33:43Speaker 7: So I think I might have said it to you
- 33:45Speaker 7: guys off air about that, like you know, next year,
- 33:47Speaker 7: this time, you're going to think a lot differently of Taekwon.
- 33:50Speaker 7: It may be a lot better or it might be
- 33:53Speaker 7: a lot worse.
- 33:54Speaker 3: When I when I was doing some stuff on Billy
- 33:56Speaker 3: Oh when when they brought him back, the immedia thing
- 34:00Speaker 3: that I thought about with Taekwon was, Okay, he's not
- 34:03Speaker 3: as good. But Jamison Williams at Alabama two years ago.
- 34:08Speaker 3: They they're built very, very similarly, and they both have
- 34:11Speaker 3: ridiculous speed. And you're just watching the way that Bill
- 34:14Speaker 3: O'Brien was able to get Jamison Williams off the line
- 34:17Speaker 3: of scrimmage and get him away from contact and just
- 34:20Speaker 3: allow him to outrun people all over the field. You
- 34:23Speaker 3: got to think that they're both six foot one, they're
- 34:26Speaker 3: both not exactly big guys in terms of their frames,
- 34:29Speaker 3: and they both can fly. So even though I think
- 34:31Speaker 3: Jamison Williams is a much better player than Taekwon Thornton,
- 34:35Speaker 3: I think that you can at least have some overlapping
- 34:37Speaker 3: roles and how they're used. And that did get me
- 34:40Speaker 3: a little bit excited about how like, I don't think
- 34:43Speaker 3: it's silly to be to be bullish taw Thorton, no.
- 34:45Speaker 5: But to be but to be fair, I don't think
- 34:47Speaker 5: we really saw much out of him last year to
- 34:49Speaker 5: get we decided you know, maybe maybe you know in
- 34:52Speaker 5: camp there were there were a couple of catches. You know, hey,
- 34:54Speaker 5: he's pretty good actually, you know, tracking the ball and
- 34:57Speaker 5: and you know, spacing and getting it over the shoulder.
- 34:59Speaker 5: But that was kind of you never really saw the
- 35:01Speaker 5: speed on.
- 35:02Speaker 6: One game was a good game for him, but he
- 35:04Speaker 6: had a lot of drops. I just remember going over
- 35:06Speaker 6: the middle in Minnesota and just dropping that he hears footsteps.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, And I mean, and it's worth wondering
- 35:13Speaker 5: what's Billy a gonna do with him? You know, what's
- 35:15Speaker 5: an experienced offensive coordinator going to say that sort.
- 35:18Speaker 7: He won't send him on shallow crosses. So you can
- 35:20Speaker 7: get light.
- 35:22Speaker 3: But that's sort of my point is that the system
- 35:25Speaker 3: that he was in last year, there's no way unless
- 35:28Speaker 3: you were justin Jefferson Good that you were probably going
- 35:31Speaker 3: to succeed as a rookie wide receiver in that system.
- 35:35Speaker 3: And now you're getting put in not only just a sophisticated,
- 35:37Speaker 3: real NFL system, but you're also with the coach that's
- 35:40Speaker 3: had players of your ilk before. I mean, some people
- 35:43Speaker 3: have gone back to like Will Fuller with the Texans
- 35:45Speaker 3: right and looked at how Bill O'Brien schemed him open,
- 35:48Speaker 3: So maybe they can get some opportunities for Taekwon down
- 35:52Speaker 3: the field. But the one time I remember that he
- 35:54Speaker 3: did get open, he dropped the pass. It was I
- 35:57Speaker 3: think it was against down the field, Sincinnattie or Miami.
- 35:59Speaker 7: It was late season.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they in the season or not. I'm not
- 36:02Speaker 3: going to say who it was. But I was in
- 36:03Speaker 3: the locker room and I said, uh, oh, you know,
- 36:06Speaker 3: we're trying to get you, get you loose right in
- 36:09Speaker 3: the open field of Taekwon, And somebody on the Patriots said, well,
- 36:12Speaker 3: we did, but he dropped the ball and I was
- 36:14Speaker 3: just like yikes, Like man, you know, even your you
- 36:18Speaker 3: own teammates saying stuff like that. So I think that
- 36:21Speaker 3: there was a lot of pressure on him last year
- 36:23Speaker 3: to break out, and he really wasn't putting an opportunity
- 36:27Speaker 3: to be able to do that.
- 36:28Speaker 6: Vincent and Wilmington, North Carolina, we are watching Bill and
- 36:31Speaker 6: the success of the Patriots whither away. One special teams
- 36:35Speaker 6: player or guard at a time.
- 36:37Speaker 7: Don't ever change Patriots. It's like back goes, back to
- 36:40Speaker 7: back emails. Say everything you need to.
- 36:41Speaker 6: Try, I do it. In today's NFL, the goal should
- 36:44Speaker 6: be to average twenty seven offensive points a game, which
- 36:47Speaker 6: translates to a top ten offense. The Patriots have the
- 36:50Speaker 6: worst offense in the division. How can it not be
- 36:52Speaker 6: a higher priority. The defense will cushion the embarrassment but
- 36:56Speaker 6: won't win games. I no longer trust in the husk
- 36:59Speaker 6: of thank you Tom Brady for the Super Bowls. Wow.
- 37:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't think it's quite I don't think it
- 37:05Speaker 7: was quite as positive as the previous one. I don't
- 37:07Speaker 7: think it's anywhere near as bad as that. Right, I
- 37:11Speaker 7: respect it though, like some people just have strong opinions
- 37:15Speaker 7: and throw them out there. I think that's great, and
- 37:17Speaker 7: I'm serious sports, So what's about. It's supposed to be fun,
- 37:20Speaker 7: supposed to listen.
- 37:22Speaker 6: That's emotion and it's just sports. Let's go to the
- 37:25Speaker 6: ACE ticket hotline eight five five pass five hundred. We'll
- 37:29Speaker 6: start with Eldred, who says he's mad as hell? What's up? Aldred?
- 37:34Speaker 3: Oh boy, give it to me Aldred?
- 37:36Speaker 12: All right, Hey, Avon, I agree with you. Under their
- 37:39Speaker 12: first picky t is the hell.
- 37:40Speaker 8: Out of us back to field. I know y'all can't
- 37:45Speaker 8: say it because y'all cover the team, but that dinosaur
- 37:48Speaker 8: speaking GM need to be out.
- 37:51Speaker 12: I mean out. I mean if every other team in
- 37:53Speaker 12: GM to add to the offense even though they got
- 37:56Speaker 12: good weapons, ads more, why can't he see it? This
- 38:00Speaker 12: is not nineteen eighty nineteen ninety. And then, like I said,
- 38:04Speaker 12: if it been for Brady, it's been. He's been another
- 38:06Speaker 12: Brown season.
- 38:07Speaker 8: He's been out in three years.
- 38:09Speaker 12: And I mean that that's this is ridiculous.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Okay, It's a great point of excelge adding offensive talent
- 38:15Speaker 3: even when you already have offensive talent, because a lot
- 38:17Speaker 3: of teams did that over the last couple of days.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Just his guy, Quinton Johnson goes to a team that
- 38:24Speaker 3: already has Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on the roster.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Zave Flowers goes to Baltimore, which Odell is still there.
- 38:30Speaker 5: Tim Bateman, h.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Josh Palmer is still there promising Jordan Addison with Justin
- 38:36Speaker 3: Jefferson Paired with Justin Jefferson. I mentioned Charlie Jones gets
- 38:39Speaker 3: drafted by the Bengals when they already have their Plethoro
- 38:42Speaker 3: talent at receivers. So all these other teams they got
- 38:46Speaker 3: receivers up the wazoo, and they're still taking receivers even
- 38:49Speaker 3: in a bad receiver drafts.
- 38:52Speaker 6: Good point. Let's go to Willem and Phillham. What's up William.
- 38:57Speaker 12: Great?
- 38:58Speaker 6: How you doing all right? All right?
- 39:02Speaker 13: Where I'm trying not to cuss and be pissed off
- 39:06Speaker 13: with this game. I swear, okay, uh, let me get
- 39:12Speaker 13: it again because Mike, like I was laughing like to
- 39:15Speaker 13: see like I'm Julie, We're not. No, I'm really pissed
- 39:18Speaker 13: off seriously, So I'll just start with this. This is
- 39:20Speaker 13: I don't care about the linebackers or I don't care
- 39:23Speaker 13: about what the Patriot did back in the past with
- 39:25Speaker 13: guards and tackles. I don't care where's mac Jones' weapons
- 39:29Speaker 13: at man, like where as and where's where's that trade?
- 39:33Speaker 13: Uh of Jerry Judy or or brand a uk or
- 39:36Speaker 13: something like what is Bill doing on defense? And what
- 39:39Speaker 13: and punters and and and guards?
- 39:42Speaker 14: Are you kidding me?
- 39:44Speaker 4: Seriously?
- 39:45Speaker 13: Like I'm ready to be an Eagle fan. You just
- 39:47Speaker 13: see what they just did over it. They got all
- 39:49Speaker 13: Georgia bulldog and touch that I gotten DeAndre swiped seriously
- 39:55Speaker 13: and it still And what last year when they went
- 39:57Speaker 13: and got well ah Brown, I mean last year year
- 39:59Speaker 13: before last. I'm daring, Like that's how you do it? Like,
- 40:02Speaker 13: what is going on?
- 40:03Speaker 8: Man?
- 40:04Speaker 15: You said, mass up the found and have what?
- 40:07Speaker 13: DeAndre?
- 40:08Speaker 4: I'm not young, I'm daring.
- 40:09Speaker 16: I'm you tu I guess and what and my just
- 40:11Speaker 16: sayond I mean.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Who's going when Thurston comes from us?
- 40:14Speaker 13: Who is going to make that place?
- 40:16Speaker 16: What?
- 40:16Speaker 4: W we need that first?
- 40:17Speaker 13: Daance?
- 40:18Speaker 4: Who's gonna do it?
- 40:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll all right, thanks William.
- 40:25Speaker 7: I'm glad he was working hard to try to keep
- 40:27Speaker 7: it under control.
- 40:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:28Speaker 7: I feel like that this is the same thing, though.
- 40:30Speaker 7: I I feel for the people that wanted the offensive weapons.
- 40:35Speaker 7: I don't think it was great. As Evan just said,
- 40:37Speaker 7: you know it wasn't a great receiver class, and then
- 40:40Speaker 7: once you sort of let the better ones go early,
- 40:43Speaker 7: you kind of get.
- 40:45Speaker 5: You missed Evan's run in the twenties, I mean, right
- 40:46Speaker 5: outside of that.
- 40:47Speaker 7: And and here's where, you know, and I agree with
- 40:50Speaker 7: everything Evan said, but I think I sort of interpreted
- 40:52Speaker 7: a little bit different. I think it makes more sense
- 40:55Speaker 7: for teams like Cincinnati in the Chargers and that have
- 41:01Speaker 7: weapons to take a shot on someone else, because if
- 41:04Speaker 7: it doesn't really work, it's nothing, nothing lost. You know,
- 41:07Speaker 7: you still got Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and you still
- 41:11Speaker 7: got Tyler Boyd and you know Jamar Chase and t Higgins.
- 41:15Speaker 7: If the Patriots like put some stock into a receiver
- 41:18Speaker 7: who's kind of iffy and it doesn't work, it's a bust.
- 41:21Speaker 7: It's it's it's it's a disaster.
- 41:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 41:23Speaker 7: Thornton so right, and you know, it's one of those things.
- 41:29Speaker 7: You know, we talk a lot about the cornerbacks, corners,
- 41:31Speaker 7: not quarterbacks. Like so everybody's thrilled about Christian Gonzales and
- 41:35Speaker 7: I am too, and and some you know, I heard
- 41:40Speaker 7: one person sort of play Devil's advocate, intentionally trying to
- 41:43Speaker 7: look at the other side of it. Today, as I
- 41:45Speaker 7: was driving in and they were saying they've had so
- 41:47Speaker 7: much succe, I think was Chris Gasper. They've had so
- 41:49Speaker 7: much success with the Malcolm Butler's and the j. C.
- 41:51Speaker 7: Jackson's of the world. And I would argue that if
- 41:55Speaker 7: Christian Gonzales plays like Malcolm Butler, he's not good, he's
- 41:58Speaker 7: gonna be He's gonna be perceived to be a borderline bust.
- 42:03Speaker 7: You know, bust is probably too strong because Butler was
- 42:05Speaker 7: a good player.
- 42:06Speaker 16: J C.
- 42:06Speaker 7: Jackson was a good player, but up and down, I
- 42:09Speaker 7: think that those guys were elevated because they were undrafted
- 42:12Speaker 7: free agents, right and when they played and they started
- 42:15Speaker 7: and they made some plays, you were like, wow, Bill
- 42:17Speaker 7: did it again, And he did because Bill's had immense
- 42:20Speaker 7: success with that position. Jonathan Jones Randall Gay like a
- 42:24Speaker 7: lot of defensive backs undrafted that he's had success with.
- 42:27Speaker 7: But I don't think success for an undrafted rookie is
- 42:30Speaker 7: the same as a first round draft pick.
- 42:32Speaker 6: No, No, this guy has to be a Pro Bowl.
- 42:36Speaker 7: He's same kind of stuff. With the receivers, if they're
- 42:39Speaker 7: not good enough. The Patriots needed like the Patriots needed
- 42:43Speaker 7: a receiver to come in and really help Mac Jones.
- 42:45Speaker 7: So if if they're not good enough and they don't
- 42:47Speaker 7: think that they can do that, maybe they were better
- 42:50Speaker 7: off going another just just a different trying to bring
- 42:56Speaker 7: myself around. What what are they thinking? What's their line
- 42:59Speaker 7: of thought?
- 43:00Speaker 5: I think, I mean, I think that they're thinking, we
- 43:02Speaker 5: want to surround him with veterans. We don't think that
- 43:04Speaker 5: a rookie's going to come in here and work with
- 43:06Speaker 5: Mac and make really much of a difference. So let's
- 43:08Speaker 5: just have Bill O'Brien create a new offense for what
- 43:11Speaker 5: we have, you know, I mean it's I mean, it's
- 43:14Speaker 5: not a terrible, terrible group.
- 43:15Speaker 6: Of Is there a chance that we go out in
- 43:17Speaker 6: training camp and as bad as it looked last year,
- 43:20Speaker 6: we're like, whoa, this looks like I mean, it's a bar,
- 43:24Speaker 6: a low bar offense that that seems to know what
- 43:27Speaker 6: it's doing at least like it.
- 43:30Speaker 3: But that's just the bare minimum. And I think that,
- 43:34Speaker 3: you know, to willman Film's point, like it's third and eight,
- 43:38Speaker 3: where's the ball going? And this whole idea of oh
- 43:41Speaker 3: well could go anywhere like that? That really, now, that's
- 43:45Speaker 3: not going to change the equation. That doesn't do it
- 43:47Speaker 3: for me. Okay, where who is the guy that comes
- 43:51Speaker 3: on Tuesdays when teams get into those game plan meetings
- 43:54Speaker 3: and they say, see the Patriots offense up on the board,
- 43:56Speaker 3: and they say, we absolutely need to shut this guy down,
- 44:00Speaker 3: or we need to devise our entire game plan around
- 44:03Speaker 3: Tyreek Kill, around Stefan Diggs, around Garrett Wilson. And they
- 44:07Speaker 3: don't have that guy on the roster now. They weren't
- 44:09Speaker 3: going to get that guy in this draft, and I
- 44:11Speaker 3: agree with that, unless maybe they went with one of
- 44:14Speaker 3: those first round guys. But I think ultimately what you
- 44:17Speaker 3: look at now at this draft is that there were
- 44:19Speaker 3: guys that fit their prototype that were available at some
- 44:23Speaker 3: of the instances where they picked the sequence that's going
- 44:26Speaker 3: to hant.
- 44:26Speaker 6: They necessarily better than the guys they have now. And
- 44:29Speaker 6: I know twenty twenty four a lot of these guys
- 44:31Speaker 6: will be going, but this year, were they necessarily better
- 44:34Speaker 6: than the stable of pass catchers that they have now?
- 44:38Speaker 3: I don't know if they are going to be better,
- 44:41Speaker 3: but I think that some of the guys that were
- 44:43Speaker 3: available had the potential to be better, because you know what,
- 44:47Speaker 3: Kendrick Bourne is you know that what he is in
- 44:50Speaker 3: the league, but Josh Downs might be he might be worse,
- 44:54Speaker 3: he might be better, but he might be better. Right,
- 44:56Speaker 3: And that's the draft. And as we're looking at the
- 44:59Speaker 3: sequence that's going to kick on me. Marty Mapu had
- 45:01Speaker 3: seventy six at seventy eight Josh Downs or seventy eight
- 45:05Speaker 3: Tucker Craft the tight end from South Dakota State and
- 45:07Speaker 3: had seventy nine Josh Downs. So right in that span
- 45:11Speaker 3: of four picks that those two guys came off the board.
- 45:14Speaker 3: And if either one of those guys Craft or Downs
- 45:17Speaker 3: ends up being an impact player in Green Bay or Indy,
- 45:20Speaker 3: that's gonna be where we're going to look back and
- 45:21Speaker 3: say what do we do here?
- 45:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I was gonna say to your point, Evan, like
- 45:24Speaker 5: you know, with with the ball can go anywhere. Third
- 45:26Speaker 5: and fourteen in Super Bowl forty nine, who to go to?
- 45:30Speaker 5: Julian Edelman? You know, fourth down, twenty fifteen AFC Championship,
- 45:33Speaker 5: Who Rob Gronkowski?
- 45:34Speaker 7: Well, that's Super Bowl for all that Tom Brady's talk
- 45:37Speaker 7: about who's your favorite receiver? The open guy?
- 45:39Speaker 5: When you had you had to have it, you knew,
- 45:41Speaker 5: you generally knew it was.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Going to Welker, it was going to Gronk. Yeah, it
- 45:45Speaker 3: was going to Edelman.
- 45:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:46Speaker 7: And I'm not telling you every single time, but you
- 45:48Speaker 7: knew when and I just listened to Jimmy were down,
- 45:50Speaker 7: you knew where the ball was going.
- 45:51Speaker 6: Sup.
- 45:51Speaker 5: Super Bowl fifty three Gronk that, I mean, the biggest
- 45:54Speaker 5: play of the game to to, you know, to get
- 45:55Speaker 5: that final score. I mean, how many did Edelman have
- 45:57Speaker 5: third downs that you had to? I mean those were
- 45:59Speaker 5: the guys that made the key plays. It's not about well,
- 46:02Speaker 5: you never know where it's gonna go. We might actually
- 46:04Speaker 5: throw it to you know, receiver number six on this play.
- 46:06Speaker 5: It doesn't happen. I mean, when the big moments, the
- 46:08Speaker 5: big games got to have it, you need the good players.
- 46:11Speaker 6: Let's go back to the phones. Mike's in North Carolina.
- 46:13Speaker 17: Hi, Mike, Hey, guys, going good. Great love listening to
- 46:21Speaker 17: you guys. Trying to talk myself off the ledge here
- 46:24Speaker 17: after the Bruins collapse of a Day three. I feel
- 46:33Speaker 17: like for the Patriots, but I just want to talk about,
- 46:36Speaker 17: specifically about the asset management over the past couple of
- 46:40Speaker 17: years with the guards and interior line. So we had
- 46:45Speaker 17: Joe Toney. We know that story. They franchised him, let
- 46:48Speaker 17: them walk, didn't want to pay him. Then we shipped
- 46:52Speaker 17: off Shack Mason last year, who granted it looks like
- 46:55Speaker 17: he declined a little bit in last year, but still
- 46:58Speaker 17: got rid of them. Had to spend a first round
- 47:02Speaker 17: pick on a guard last year, a Strange. We also
- 47:06Speaker 17: drafted Chase some times, I think as well later in
- 47:09Speaker 17: the draft. And then this year we've taken three more
- 47:14Speaker 17: interior alignments. So just I mean, like, I just don't
- 47:19Speaker 17: know what we're doing here really, to be honest.
- 47:21Speaker 7: Do any of you have any concerns about the guards
- 47:25Speaker 7: they took last year? Strange and Hines.
- 47:27Speaker 6: I didn't give him much thought.
- 47:29Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know. I don't know what to
- 47:30Speaker 5: think of Heines. I mean, we didn't see him at all.
- 47:31Speaker 5: He was never really on that.
- 47:32Speaker 3: We already have concerns about Strange. Then they're that they're
- 47:36Speaker 3: in trouble because if that pick doesn't pan out with
- 47:38Speaker 3: where they took them and the position that they and I'm.
- 47:41Speaker 7: Not saying that they do, I'm just I'm just looking.
- 47:44Speaker 7: So so they had so they had struggle in the
- 47:46Speaker 7: interior offensive line last year, like Strange, got benched three
- 47:49Speaker 7: different times, right.
- 47:50Speaker 5: People, every people don't like to talk about it, and.
- 47:52Speaker 7: Everybody, but everybody complained. Everybody, can you know, complained going
- 47:57Speaker 7: in like well right now, I shouldn't say, like then,
- 47:59Speaker 7: now there's a lot. Well, you had James Ferrence was
- 48:02Speaker 7: your backup. He's thirty three years old. I agree, Yet
- 48:06Speaker 7: you should have someone better than that, like a young
- 48:08Speaker 7: guy that you're not paying, you know whatever. But think
- 48:12Speaker 7: about the fact that the coaches knew that that James
- 48:15Speaker 7: Ferrnce was the best option, and yet still three different
- 48:18Speaker 7: times cole Strange was taken out of the game. Healthy
- 48:23Speaker 7: Cole Strange was taken out and they felt like they
- 48:26Speaker 7: didn't have any depth on the So what are they
- 48:29Speaker 7: going to feel if they feel like now we have
- 48:32Speaker 7: Antonio Maffi in City sau Get in the CD city
- 48:36Speaker 7: City City, you know, maybe they feel good about these picks.
- 48:40Speaker 7: Maybe they're at a higher level in chasing Hines and
- 48:44Speaker 7: they're more options. Then what happens, Like my guess is
- 48:49Speaker 7: it's more of an indictment on Chasing Hines, who, as
- 48:51Speaker 7: you said, Mike accurately, didn't really see the field right
- 48:54Speaker 7: than it is Cole Strange. But to Evan's point, we
- 48:57Speaker 7: better see col Strange as a fixture, not coming in
- 49:00Speaker 7: and out of games periodically, well and all this.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Stuff that you thought. You know, hey, we kind of
- 49:05Speaker 5: have to hopefully rely on these guys. Andrews in the
- 49:08Speaker 5: middle at center, Cole Strange at left guard, and Michael
- 49:10Speaker 5: and Win you a right guard. I mean, you don't
- 49:11Speaker 5: have a lot that you can really say, let's hang
- 49:13Speaker 5: our hat on. But like your hope is that you
- 49:15Speaker 5: spend a first round pick on this left guard. Your
- 49:18Speaker 5: right guard is supposedly one of the most promising players
- 49:21Speaker 5: on your roster, you know, coming up for a contract.
- 49:23Speaker 5: And your center is your captain and your leader. I mean,
- 49:25Speaker 5: there's nobody left really of you know, those guys on
- 49:28Speaker 5: the offensive side of the ball. David Andrews kind of
- 49:30Speaker 5: stands alone as far as that, so, you know, you
- 49:32Speaker 5: just you have to wonder what what what's going on?
- 49:34Speaker 5: There are those guys in danger? I mean it is
- 49:36Speaker 5: David Andrew's going to be in a competition, you know,
- 49:39Speaker 5: like legitimate for his job. I can't rule it out.
- 49:42Speaker 6: Right now, Let's go to Butch in Marshall, what's up? Butch?
- 49:47Speaker 15: Hey, you guys, how's it going good?
- 49:49Speaker 6: But where's Marshall Marshfield. Marshfield, My uncle was a butcher
- 49:54Speaker 6: from Marshfield. All right, yeah, I want.
- 49:57Speaker 15: To pause a minute and U you know, I think
- 50:00Speaker 15: if you get the draft, maybe another month or two,
- 50:03Speaker 15: depending on how they fill the holes in free agency.
- 50:07Speaker 15: We know the compic periods about to end, and Bill
- 50:10Speaker 15: loves to kind of, you know, use another spark once
- 50:13Speaker 15: that period ends. And there's still two decent tackles and
- 50:16Speaker 15: some good running backs out there.
- 50:18Speaker 5: But who are the tackle.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Tackles we got?
- 50:23Speaker 15: We got Lewin and Donovan Smith, which you know I would.
- 50:26Speaker 7: You're talking about free agent?
- 50:28Speaker 3: Yeah, not yep, there's no reason to bring either one
- 50:31Speaker 3: of those guys in With Riley Reef and Calvin Anderson.
- 50:34Speaker 5: You have that, Yeah, they're there.
- 50:38Speaker 14: I would argue they're a little bit better starting capability.
- 50:41Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, maybe so. I mean, how many of those
- 50:43Speaker 7: guys you're going to have, though, Like, how many veterans
- 50:47Speaker 7: free agent tackles are you going to sign?
- 50:50Speaker 3: That would be three.
- 50:51Speaker 15: I think they're better than Anderson.
- 50:52Speaker 7: And not okay, but they already signed those guys. I
- 50:55Speaker 7: think I think you're right. I think Donovan Smith is
- 50:57Speaker 7: better than Riley Reef. I agree with you, but they
- 51:00Speaker 7: signed Riley Reef, So how many are you going to sign?
- 51:04Speaker 6: Yeah, you can only have so many on your roster.
- 51:08Speaker 7: Like I just find it. I mean, I'm not telling
- 51:09Speaker 7: you it's impossible. There's plenty of veteran free agent signings
- 51:12Speaker 7: that don't ever make the team. But that's but that's
- 51:15Speaker 7: a fail right, well right.
- 51:16Speaker 5: I mean, just bring up the roster. I mean, right now,
- 51:18Speaker 5: I got them at eighty one on the roster. They
- 51:20Speaker 5: have five more picks. That takes him to eighty six.
- 51:22Speaker 5: I mean, they could have four roster spots by the
- 51:25Speaker 5: end of this and that and that's.
- 51:26Speaker 7: And I'm not positive. I think you're one short based
- 51:29Speaker 7: on what I've been reading. I thought it was I.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Think some people include Devin mccordy in the counting because
- 51:33Speaker 5: he hasn't officially retired.
- 51:34Speaker 7: Yeah, but Mike Reese wouldn't. Mike Reese wouldn't include that.
- 51:38Speaker 7: But you might check. You might have it, so you're
- 51:40Speaker 7: have either way. Yeah, and I agree, Like I who
- 51:43Speaker 7: was that Butcher? I agree with Butch. I mean I
- 51:46Speaker 7: would rather have Donovan Smith, not Lewan. Lwan's might be done.
- 51:50Speaker 7: He might be like Riley Reef done podcasts, but at
- 51:53Speaker 7: least he's he was at a higher level than Riley
- 51:56Speaker 7: Reef when he was when he was healthy. But I
- 51:58Speaker 7: would rather have Donovan Smith. But it's hard for me
- 52:00Speaker 7: to wrap my head around the fact that they're going
- 52:02Speaker 7: to sign another tackle match.
- 52:05Speaker 3: And when we talked to Macro in his pre draft
- 52:08Speaker 3: press conference, he put it out there that they really
- 52:10Speaker 3: like their tackle room. He said that they have one
- 52:13Speaker 3: guy returning in Trent Brown that they like, they have
- 52:16Speaker 3: two new guys. You know they are They've belt it
- 52:20Speaker 3: out for us that they were high on their tackle room.
- 52:22Speaker 3: And you know, when we Alex and I did our
- 52:25Speaker 3: final catch Toining twenty two and mock drafts and all
- 52:28Speaker 3: that stuff, none neither of us took tackles in the
- 52:30Speaker 3: top one hundred. Because of what Macro had to say,
- 52:32Speaker 3: we took it at face value, and that's how the
- 52:34Speaker 3: draft has gone. They they felt they ended up feeling
- 52:37Speaker 3: better about their tackle depths somehow than their interior depth. Clearly,
- 52:41Speaker 3: I mean based off the way that they run the draft.
- 52:43Speaker 7: And this is but part of the reasoning like they
- 52:47Speaker 7: feel better about their tackles. They told you that they
- 52:49Speaker 7: liked their tackles. This is like my point about like
- 52:52Speaker 7: they think that they got a guy who can play
- 52:55Speaker 7: linebacker at two hundred and seventeen pounds. I know, yeah,
- 52:59Speaker 7: I know, Like I this is why I'm not arguing
- 53:01Speaker 7: with the philosophy. I just I wonder if Calvin Anderson
- 53:05Speaker 7: can be a starting tackle in the NFL. They obviously
- 53:08Speaker 7: think he can. Yeah, well, like I don't doubt.
- 53:10Speaker 5: That they think he can.
- 53:11Speaker 7: And I'm not trying to tell you why no more
- 53:13Speaker 7: than they I don't know and you can't.
- 53:15Speaker 3: The problem is that that's all three of those tackles, Reef Anderson,
- 53:19Speaker 3: and Trent Brown. I'm not even confident in Trent Brown,
- 53:23Speaker 3: almost no confidence. I'm not confident that in any one
- 53:27Speaker 3: of those guys that you have a starter right that
- 53:29Speaker 3: you're gonna put him in in camp on day one
- 53:32Speaker 3: and you're not gonna take about until the end of
- 53:34Speaker 3: the season. I don't know that about any of those guys.
- 53:36Speaker 7: The best thing I could say about Trent Brown was recently,
- 53:39Speaker 7: within the past week or so, he was out doing
- 53:42Speaker 7: an event for us with the Charitable Foundation, which I
- 53:45Speaker 7: found to be a very and I'm not being sarcastic,
- 53:47Speaker 7: not at all. I found that to be a very
- 53:49Speaker 7: positive sign that he was here, He was on board
- 53:54Speaker 7: part of the organization. That stuff is important here, and
- 53:56Speaker 7: I'm not trying to be corny, that stuff is important here,
- 53:59Speaker 7: and the fact that he was part of that in
- 54:01Speaker 7: the off season I took as a positive side.
- 54:04Speaker 6: It's all about mindset for Trent, you know what I mean.
- 54:06Speaker 5: The ability, it's just like I know, it's like sometimes
- 54:10Speaker 5: he's absolutely dominant, and I would say that's you know,
- 54:13Speaker 5: I don't even to say sometimes like there's flashes of dominance,
- 54:16Speaker 5: but it's not. It's just not consistent. And then you
- 54:17Speaker 5: mix in the injuries, which I know we last year
- 54:19Speaker 5: he wasn't really injured, but.
- 54:20Speaker 6: Well he was sick. He just a few games, you know,
- 54:23Speaker 6: and I think it affected him and come out until
- 54:26Speaker 6: he didn't even come out for warm ups for a
- 54:27Speaker 6: couple of games, you know.
- 54:29Speaker 7: Thoughts and prayers.
- 54:30Speaker 6: Yeah, but no, I'm serious. I mean, I just think
- 54:33Speaker 6: with him, it's not about ability, it's about want to
- 54:37Speaker 6: you know.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's also about Adrian Clem at this point
- 54:41Speaker 3: with this, Grew could help because we put a lot
- 54:44Speaker 3: on Bill O'Brien's play to make the skill positions in
- 54:47Speaker 3: the passing game better, I think. But I think they
- 54:49Speaker 3: genuinely believe that Adrian Clem is going to also bring
- 54:53Speaker 3: a level of unison, sophistication communication to that group that mentally,
- 54:59Speaker 3: that group is going to be a lot more locked
- 55:01Speaker 3: in than it was last year.
- 55:03Speaker 6: Let's go to Pat Nagawam. What's up? Pat?
- 55:08Speaker 14: I hope you're right Evan, as far as Adrian Klem
- 55:11Speaker 14: goes now, I'll show a little bit of positivity mixed
- 55:16Speaker 14: in with a little bit of negativity. So I do, like,
- 55:20Speaker 14: you know, I do like the Ryland pick. I do
- 55:23Speaker 14: like the Mafi pick, and I think I might be
- 55:25Speaker 14: in the slight minority fans. I like the ke On
- 55:28Speaker 14: White pick. But for the lights of me, I mean, Kevin,
- 55:31Speaker 14: you're talking about Mapu and how you know they've tried
- 55:35Speaker 14: guys like that here. I can't remember the fifth rounders
- 55:38Speaker 14: name who came in injured a couple.
- 55:39Speaker 6: Of years ago.
- 55:40Speaker 14: But to have rather than seen them take a risk
- 55:44Speaker 14: on a guy like Darnell Washington at that point at least,
- 55:47Speaker 14: like that's a guy that you don't have on your
- 55:49Speaker 14: team right now, I wouldn't have a good inline blocking
- 55:52Speaker 14: tight end.
- 55:52Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 3: I think that's the biggest thing with MAPU is what
- 55:55Speaker 3: I mentioned it kind of earlier with with Downs and Craft,
- 55:59Speaker 3: and I know you can't it's hard to play this
- 56:01Speaker 3: game because you don't know how the board's gonna go.
- 56:03Speaker 3: But at the same time, I can't help but think
- 56:05Speaker 3: you probably could have had both. Like I really feel
- 56:08Speaker 3: like you probably could have had one of those players
- 56:10Speaker 3: that went in that like five to ten pick range
- 56:12Speaker 3: that all of us loved, like a Darnell Washington, like
- 56:15Speaker 3: a Tucker Craft or Josh Downs, and then still gotten
- 56:18Speaker 3: your guy in Mapo, who I think they clearly really
- 56:21Speaker 3: liked the kid that he came in. Bill talked about
- 56:23Speaker 3: his thirty visit last night. I think he blew him
- 56:27Speaker 3: away in the top thirty visit of his knowledge of
- 56:29Speaker 3: the game and his knowledge of multiple roles in the defense.
- 56:32Speaker 3: It made me think of that Devin mccordy story that
- 56:34Speaker 3: he told at mccorty's retirement ceremony that he knew the
- 56:38Speaker 3: roles and the assignments of all three levels of the defense,
- 56:41Speaker 3: and how rare that was for a college player. I
- 56:44Speaker 3: don't know if MAPO, you know, interviewed like that, but
- 56:47Speaker 3: that was sort of the impression that I got from
- 56:49Speaker 3: Belichick that he just loved the kid, you know, meeting
- 56:52Speaker 3: with him and talking with him, which is fine. But
- 56:55Speaker 3: would Mapu have been there at one oh seven or
- 56:57Speaker 3: could a trade up have happened back into the third
- 56:59Speaker 3: round to get Mapu by the end of the night
- 57:01Speaker 3: last night, and then you still get one of those
- 57:03Speaker 3: name brand players at seventy six.
- 57:06Speaker 5: I just think when you boil it down and you've
- 57:08Speaker 5: you've you've kind of said it, I mean, and I'm
- 57:10Speaker 5: just looking at the numbers now where you're now sitting
- 57:12Speaker 5: on ten interior offensive linemen, and you don't really have
- 57:16Speaker 5: a third tight end, you don't have a fifth wide receiver.
- 57:19Speaker 5: And not to make too big of a deal of
- 57:20Speaker 5: what a third, but those are positions that you take
- 57:22Speaker 5: into game day that you might need, you know.
- 57:24Speaker 3: And then can you do me a favorite. Do you
- 57:27Speaker 3: have the name the ten?
- 57:28Speaker 7: No? Do you have the depth chart open in front
- 57:29Speaker 7: of you right there? Yeah?
- 57:30Speaker 3: Can you just name it this interior offensive line?
- 57:33Speaker 18: Yes?
- 57:33Speaker 5: So we have our three starters of talk Strange Andrews,
- 57:35Speaker 5: and then behind them, I've got Chasing Hines, Cody Russi,
- 57:39Speaker 5: and James Ferrence. Then We've got Bill Murray, Jake Andrews,
- 57:43Speaker 5: citisal Antonio Maffi.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Ten ten you needed ten, right, Paul?
- 57:48Speaker 5: And how many are you going to make the team?
- 57:50Speaker 7: And that five? Yeah? Like listen, I I preface this
- 57:54Speaker 7: all the time by saying I don't know anything. No, no,
- 57:58Speaker 7: no, no no no, he just made them all. Tower lads,
- 58:02Speaker 7: Our lads does a great job with the depth.
- 58:03Speaker 6: Charts they do. They have good depth chart step charts
- 58:06Speaker 6: they do.
- 58:06Speaker 7: Actually being seriously, I know we are, I don't I'm
- 58:12Speaker 7: not sure how much better? Like what were we talking
- 58:15Speaker 7: about last year when I was, you know, chasing Hines
- 58:18Speaker 7: and Andrew Stuber as you know, young late day day three,
- 58:23Speaker 7: back up offensive lineman. Perfect, Yeah, that's what you do.
- 58:25Speaker 7: That great, great job. Suddenly this year they've taken three
- 58:28Speaker 7: in a row, and it's like, what you're surprised. I mean,
- 58:32Speaker 7: David Andrews is thirty one. No, I'm not surprised they
- 58:35Speaker 7: took back up off. This is what they do, this
- 58:36Speaker 7: is what you're supposed to do. But three and four picks.
- 58:41Speaker 6: Well, it just after it might be an indictment on
- 58:44Speaker 6: the draft their opinion.
- 58:45Speaker 3: It just that's just the way it went. Paul, but
- 58:47Speaker 3: it's just there.
- 58:49Speaker 5: That's just the way we went, and there was just
- 58:51Speaker 5: nobody else. But I think we all like, at a
- 58:55Speaker 5: certain point, do you worry that we're probably gonna have
- 58:58Speaker 5: to cut this guy? Like you know, that's because you're.
- 59:00Speaker 3: For drafting ten guys. Ten guys. I can't wait for
- 59:04Speaker 3: the backup.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Competition and probably the guys they got well and.
- 59:08Speaker 7: Bill Murray, I mean, I'll put him in a separate Obviously.
- 59:12Speaker 7: They just love this this kid because he's willing to
- 59:14Speaker 7: do whatever they want. But he's not. Uh, I don't
- 59:17Speaker 7: think a candidate really just step into any kind of
- 59:20Speaker 7: a meaningful at this stage. He's been in the practice
- 59:22Speaker 7: squad what three four years.
- 59:24Speaker 5: Defensive defensive, offensive lineman, and and so so the rest
- 59:29Speaker 5: of them, and RUSI's a little undersized, and you know,
- 59:31Speaker 5: probably not And I mean, I I mean, Mafi to
- 59:33Speaker 5: me seems like the one guy on this list base
- 59:36Speaker 5: just I'm just reading draft profiles here.
- 59:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't pretend to know all these guys. Mafi
- 59:40Speaker 7: seems to me to be the most talented guy.
- 59:42Speaker 3: Mafi is my favorite pick out of the three guys.
- 59:45Speaker 3: City Sal's got a lot of talent, but I think
- 59:47Speaker 3: the things that I saw with him were that he
- 59:49Speaker 3: doesn't really react to moving parts very well after the snap,
- 59:52Speaker 3: so like he had a difficult time picking up like
- 59:54Speaker 3: stunts and twists and blits his up front. And and
- 59:58Speaker 3: then the other thing with you know him was he's
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: more of that ball of clay type of guy. But
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: I like Mafia Ton.

- 1:06:17Speaker 3: against Ke White.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: Thank you would have survived that one. Hello, sir, that
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: was nice to meet you last night.
- 1:06:26Speaker 6: Bill Belichick spoke after the draft, and you know it
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: was mostly all draft until uh one of Paul's guys
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: break the.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: Dard that's actually one of Evan's guys.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: Uh asked if you know I'm not taking He apologized
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: ahead of time because you know, the question wasn't draft related,
- 1:06:44Speaker 6: but you know, seeing as how he may not have
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: a chance to talk to Bill for a while after
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: last night you talked about the rumors that mac Jones
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: was on the trade uh you know, trade watch, and
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: also you know what his relationship to what Bill uh was,
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: and you know, Bill, he answered the questions. You know,
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: you may not like the answers, but he did answer
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: the questions. He didn't he didn't duck him, you know.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: And he said that Max our quarterback and he's well,
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: he said, he's been our quarterback for the last two years.
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: And then when Baard followed up and said, you know,
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: you're very complimentary to him. Do you feel the same way,
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: he said, absolutely.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Right, yeah, but I would stop short of saying that
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: he said he's my.
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: Quote, he didn't say those words.
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: You're right, and I'll just you know, I do have
- 1:07:31Speaker 7: the the transcript in front of me, you know, Greg,
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: just like Fred said, prefaced it by sort of apologizing
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: for asking it in the setting that is probably not
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: conducive for that. But he said, you know, is he
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: your quarterback right now? How do you view him going
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: into year three? And the answer, the first answer was well,
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: I'm not going to respond to the anonymous quotes. Greg,
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: So this is why I regarding the trading, pushed back
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: a little bit on you know, well he answered the
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: he was evasive again, is Mac your quarterback as of
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: right now? Yeah? I mean, look, Max's been our quarterback
- 1:08:08Speaker 7: for two years. As I tell the team, every year,
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: each player, each coach, we all have to re establish
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: and prove ourselves every year. That's what this league is.
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: So that's for all of us. Twenty twenty three is
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: twenty twenty three, and we'll see how it goes. So
- 1:08:23Speaker 7: anybody that's saying he said he's our quarterback, that's not
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: what he said.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got to win the job.
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: He's got to win the job, is what he said.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: I just think it's the contrast between how he handled
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: Cam Newton and you know, just that refusal to give
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: Stidham a chance, and just he's our starter, Cam's our start.
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: I mean, he just kept pounding that drum.
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: Of course they're different players, and I think that there's
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: different situations, different situations. Cam Newton was a placeholder. He
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: wasn't your long term answer, and he knew that.
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: And cam Newton needs coddling. I mean he's very fragile,
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: believe it or not, you know, and Bill knew that
- 1:08:57Speaker 6: this is k Newton with I think I think he
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: looks at Mac differently like he looks at Mac. Is
- 1:09:03Speaker 6: if this guy is gonna be our long term answer,
- 1:09:05Speaker 6: he's gonna have to take it and he's gonna have
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: to earn it and nothing can be given to him.
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: And I mean and and I think match Max should
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: be used to that. I think that's for the most
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: part what Mac is known, with last year being the outlier.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Uh But I was I was thinking a little bit.
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: Of just you know, and I can't think of anything
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: off the top of my head, but just going back
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: to Bill's days in Cleveland, obviously we know the Brady
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: Bledsoe and how he handled that, uh you know, with
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: the with the whole Testaverdy thing and and Bernie Kosar
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: how you know, He's just got an interesting way of
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: dealing with that position at various times. And I mean,
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: I don't think I think this situation. It's obvious mac
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: Jones hasn't done enough in his mind to just say
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: he's our he's the established.
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: Starter and he's got enough. And he's also done things
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: that really ruffled his feather too that you know, the
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: all that stuff is real, the you know, going outside
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: to Alabama asking for help, you know, questioning Patricia, the
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: outward signs of frustration, you know during games that did
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: not help Max, you know, standing with Bill and you know,
- 1:10:09Speaker 6: right or wrong, you know, like who's the adult in
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: the room and who's not. You know, like you can
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: disagree with how Bill handle it, but all that stuff
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: is real.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: It's not Fay.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: You know, it's real, and I would fall into that.
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: I think it's all real, and I understand, you know,
- 1:10:23Speaker 7: where Bill would be upset. I also don't think Bill's
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: handling it well right, you know, and you you you
- 1:10:29Speaker 7: said something about you know, with Cam Newton he needed
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: the coddling and he you know, he you know, the
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: fragility there, and he thinks if mac Jones is going
- 1:10:38Speaker 7: to be the guy in the future or he's going
- 1:10:39Speaker 7: to need to handle that, well, I don't think all
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: all people, all players are the same. So if that's
- 1:10:43Speaker 7: the way he's thinking. I think that's a misstep on
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: Bill's part because I don't know Mac Jones well enough
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: to know if that's the way he wants he needs
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: to be coached, or if he is like say Russell Wilson,
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: who was every bit as fragile as any of these
- 1:10:57Speaker 7: big time quarterbacks, Pete Reckor treated him differently and got
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: ten great years out.
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: And got the most out him. You're right, but what
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: if Nick Saban said this is how you need to
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: treat Mac.
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: Well, But what if Pete Carroll said this is how
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: we need to treat Russell Wilson and then he was
- 1:11:13Speaker 7: out of the league in a year and a half.
- 1:11:14Speaker 6: Yeah, No, it's different, you waste.
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: But if I had just adjusted the way I coach
- 1:11:19Speaker 7: and treat different players differently, which is what the best
- 1:11:22Speaker 7: coaches do.
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: No, And I'm just saying, like, if it was Russell Wilson,
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: be different. But maybe Nick told Bill for Mac, you
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: need to coach him hard. He needs, you know, he
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: needs to understand who's boss.
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's how it's usually been for him, going
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: back to you know, to his high school coach. And
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: so I, like I said it shouldn't be anything that
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: he's not used to. But I just I can't get
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: out of my head the fifth year option a year
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: from right now, and what does Mack have to do
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: in this year too? In Bill's mind earn that option
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: being picked up. And it's just there's so much on
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: this season right now for you know, mister Craft saying
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: making the playoffs for for Mac and everything he's going
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: through right now, is he going to really solidify his
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: place or you know, or are we going to get
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: out there? And you know, I'm sure OTAs it's just
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: going to look like it usually does with Mac will
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: take the first rep. But I do wonder if it's
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: kind of you know, if there's just a tinge of
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: it seems like Zappy's getting he's getting a little bit
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: of a reps.
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: And chance that to me is the more fascinating part
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: of this is rather than trying to read into you know,
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: why did he say that? Why didn't he mention his name?
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: But why didn't or why did he? What do you
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: think we're going to see when we get on the field.
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: Do you think it's going to be like that th
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: aue competition? I kind of don't.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: I don't think so at ot as. I don't think
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: we'll come out of O t AS. But I do
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: wonder if as we get into training camp, if if
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: you start noticing Zappy getting just you know, more more
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: snaps than you might have expect.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: I think ZAPPI might get some reps the the one bs.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: You know, some of the guys that are fringe starters,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: fourth or fifth receivers, but not not not the guys
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: that are going to be on the team, but not
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: guys that are.
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: A you know he was there seen in the past,
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: because now he really is the number two. I mean
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: last year you had Hoyer, who you know, depending on
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: the day, got more snaps than Zappy.
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: But you always felt with Hoyer and it was like.
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: To a certain thing. So you know, you bring out
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: Hoyer because you know it's going to get done the
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: way you want it done. But so Zapi will get
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: more snaps and than he did last year, there's no
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: doubt about it. But I agree with Paul. I think
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: from day one it'll be ever Max your started.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: But that's that's a little deceiver, but that can change,
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: you know. I also just say I go back to
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: the all the way to nineteen when Brady and training
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: camp said this team needs a great quarterback, and I think, again,
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: this team needs a great quarterback, and every team needs
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: a great and I really feel like with Mac, you know,
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: I think all what all of us want to see
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: is to have him just go out there and establish
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: himself at a much higher level than what he was
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: at when the first week of camp was over last year,
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: when it was quite frankly an abject disaster for the
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: entire offense. So if he does that, I just find
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: it really hard to believe that that door is going
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: to be a jar for Bailey Zappy if.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: He comes out. And I'm not talking about OTAs.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: And passing camps and things like that where there's no
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: pads and that's a totally different animal. But I think
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: once he that first week of real full contact football,
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: if he comes out and sets a tone, I don't
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: think that they were really going to have a camp
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: competition at that position.
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: And the whole I just you know, semantics thing. But yeah,
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: he's gonna get Zappi's gonna get more reps than he
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: did last year. He's the two this year, right, he
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: was the three last year. So that's kind of not
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: the same, right, Like, that doesn't mean he's like Brian
- 1:14:48Speaker 7: Hoyer was not getting a chance to start last year.
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: He was not in a competition with Mac Jones.
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: I'm just saying, don't let looks deceive you that, oh,
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: Zapy's getting more snaps in the No, he's in number two.
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: He should, right, But that's just like what I'm saying
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: is what Evan's talking about. Is he getting more reps
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: with players that you know Brian Hoyd didn't get a
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: lot of reps with ones in camp last year.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: Well, there are no rookies for him to throw to
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: you right now, so.
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: It all comes back. He's gonna you know what. I
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: gave him a big hug when we left after round one.
- 1:15:21Speaker 7: I was so happy for him. Now I just feel
- 1:15:23Speaker 7: like he needs a hug.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: He congratulated me like in the war room, like all
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: the Eagles war room celebrating their sixth round pick, which,
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: by the way, the lottery.
- 1:15:33Speaker 7: The sixth round is around the corner. Well we didn't
- 1:15:36Speaker 7: do it on video though.
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: Paul.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: Just don't forget that Tom Brady was drafted in the
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: sixth so it does happen. So I do forget that
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: all the.
- 1:15:44Speaker 6: Time he was actually playing chess here, because it's not
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: what he says, it's what he does. And what he's
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: not doing is getting all these new weapons because he
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: believes in Mac. Mac doesn't need.
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: He stole my off your line, right, You said that, well,
- 1:16:00Speaker 7: but I said, it's actually a big show of support
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: from Mac.
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: Right, But I mean maybe it is. But I think
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: like ultimately the end goal for Bill right now and
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: all these things that he's doing of not mentioning Mac
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: and all that, like, it's all I think in purpose
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: to get Mac to hit the next level and to
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: play better. I mean, I I just I don't think
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: that these are all like him just being like I'm
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: just gonna screw this kid over now, make this season
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: miserable for him. I just I can't see him burning
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: a season just to be vindictive to a quarterback.
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: All right, let's get back to the phones. That's the
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: what Bill had to say last night. But let's get
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: back to the draft. Chris is in Scottsdale. What's up, Chris?
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: Hey guys? Hey Fred, Just an interesting points. I remember
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: years ago on PSW you had mentioned, you know, your
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: curiosity about how seeing you guys on the podcast versus
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: just hearing you being l on whether or not you
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: were a big fan of that or whatever. And I
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: gotta tell you, it is awesome being able to see
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: you guys.
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: Okay, so you think it's worth that, all right, Well,
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: thank you, Okay, thanks for these just some feedback, that's.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: Okay. So I'm actually, you know, really really really upset
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: with with how things are, and I think it's predictable,
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: and guys to be to be very honest, and one
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: of the beautiful things about our podcast and our show
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: is that you get the latitude to kind of jump
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: around a little bit. You guys are very patient with
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: us as callers and let us bend, especially in these times, right,
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: so please give me that as well. In this call,
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: I will say this that it's becoming so redundant, these
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: drafts and the disappointments and you know.
- 1:17:37Speaker 17: The whole thing.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: So that's why when when the draft got off to
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: the good start that it got off to with Christian
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: Gonzales and and I kind of figured that that, you know, hey,
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: now more than ever, Bill can't just make a mockery
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: of the draft and thumb's nose to it, and and
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: I'm smarter than everybody, and you know, and be snide,
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: and you know the whole thing that he does right
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: which is just tired and old and completely destroying this
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: organization literally from the ground up. I mean, it really
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: really is. And that's not overstating it. I think the
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: facts are bearing out if you look how barren our
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: roster is in so many ways, not only for now,
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: but you guys brought up earlier, you know, down the
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: road is up. I mean when you trade down to
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: get Christian Gonzales and take up the holier than now
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: fourth round pick and you take a kicker, you know,
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: with it in this that and the other or whichever
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: one it was, you know, the mantis, it doesn't really matter.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: But at this point, I think it's very well known
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: how we feel about you know, Bill and the Bill
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: Wi crust Scout needs to go away and all that.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: But I think we have to pull back the curtain
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: a little bit and look at Robert, you know, mister Kraft,
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: I mean honestly, because it's not like he's stupid and
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: he doesn't see what's going on. At some point you
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: have to wonder to yourself, it is he and Jonathan
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: just okay with what's going on because they make the
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: money that they make off of owning this team, and
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: they got their championships and it is what it is.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: And you know, maybe when Jonathan takes over, maybe because
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: of that, when he wants to put his thumb crind
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: on it. And then that's when we start getting you know,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: a coach and here in a GM and here that
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: that's actually taking the process very well.
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: I can tell you that they know that winning me
- 1:19:17Speaker 6: is everything. Like as much money as you're making now,
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: a lot of that dries up in terms of you know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: tickets and sponsorship revenue if you're not winning. So I mean, yeah,
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: I mean that's why Robert did what he did this offseason.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: The letter that season ticket holders got right after the season,
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: the comments he made at the owners meeting, that's.
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: That's there's never any accountability. Remember this was when he
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: did things well.
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: Well, okay, I mean, do you think that he might
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: have had any push to get bringing Bill O'Brien. Do
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: you think that he might have been part of like
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: maybe that was a not as much an ask as
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: a demand. You know, I don't know.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: Yeah, you know that it's a very good point that
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: you bring up and and I'm not going to say
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: that he didn't, right, but the fact that Bill can constantly,
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: I mean so consistently, year after year, do outlandish things
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: that are a detriment to the team, you know, like hiring,
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: like you said, the coordinators that we had last year,
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: I mean, coaches. Because of his resume, he gets to
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: keep it, but I mean other people, their heads are
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: on the on the chopping block, I mean instantly for
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: stuff like that. I mean, and being so poor for years,
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: I know, but leading to the product that we have now.
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: No mean thanks for the you know, we allow a
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: little latitude.
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: But Fred would like to speak.
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: But you know, but when Robert says, you know, our
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: head coach often does things that are unauthored ox you know,
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: he's earned the latitude to do so, it's not like
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: those things are unrecognized. They see that. You know he's
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: doing that, and he's he's earned a certain amount of latitude.
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: But it's running out. It's running out, and Robert Craft
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: has made that clear, at least to me he has.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I also just know this is not the draft for
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: the all They're ruining the team. Look, I'm upset about
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: the fourth round. I think the interior offensive linemann As
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: poul says he can do those on your own time. Okay,
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: But Christian Gonzalez is a good pick, Like, that's a
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: good player that they got. Kean White is a good
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: consensus draft pick. So I think they got two guys
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: at the top of the draft that are going to
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: help this this team. And maybe they're not at the
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: positions that you wanted them to pick.
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: But but here's here's something.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: But if those two guys are really good, it's going
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: to be a good draft.
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: Oh yeah, But I want to I want to go
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: back to something that was said after the Gonzales pick
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: by Mayo. I'm just glad the coach let us make
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: the pick or something. I'm just glad coach made the pick.
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: Say I don't think he said that.
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: Yeah, he said, I'm just glad coach made the pick.
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: So in Mayo mind, there's a chance that he wasn't
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: gonna make that pick.
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: And well, that's not how that's not how I took it.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: And I talked and I talked to Steve Belichick about
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: it too. They were I just thought they were happy
- 1:22:08Speaker 7: that they went. They got a good defensive player with
- 1:22:11Speaker 7: the first round pick because there's no guarantees of that.
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: I know that can that can go either way, and
- 1:22:16Speaker 7: you know, and the other part of it that that
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: sort of bugs me. And this gets back to what
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: Chris was talking about Chris in Arizona. And look, it
- 1:22:27Speaker 7: was he overstating some of the things. Of course he was.
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: We all speaking hyperbole when we get wound up, right,
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: But so on one hand, Bill can say that, you know,
- 1:22:37Speaker 7: Mac Jones has been the quarterback for the last two years,
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: but we all start with a clean slate and then
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: you know, was it six weeks ago, Mike, you were
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: out in Arizona when Bill's telling us here. So so
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: why why should the fans you know, believe that better
- 1:22:49Speaker 7: times a last the last twenty five years. So it's
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: okay for you to fall back on your resume, but
- 1:22:55Speaker 7: poor Mac Jones can't, Yeah, or anybody else.
- 1:22:59Speaker 6: No, that was that was like, that's so hypocritical. That
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: was a departure of the patriot way and what Bill
- 1:23:04Speaker 6: usually does. Absolutely he got called out by Teddy Bruski
- 1:23:08Speaker 6: on that, right, right, you know, uh, let's get back
- 1:23:12Speaker 6: to the phones. We'll go to Sean and Rochester, New York.
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: What's up Sean my birthplace.
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: Really, you were born in Rochester, New York. Learn something
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: about him. Every show I.
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: Moved it was a rest stop, wasn't.
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: My dad delivered me?
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: Uh?
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: My dad worked for Wilson Sporting Goods up there for
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: just like a few years when I was born. Then
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: we moved back here when I was like.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: One, wait, what's up, Sewan, you're there?
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: You were born?
- 1:23:38Speaker 16: Well?
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: No, no, no, no, Well they lived there for a few
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: years I was born, and then about a bravat here,
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: so they've been there a.
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: Couple of years.
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: But he actually, Sean is get up at a and
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: w I don't know. I was only seven months my dad,
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: did you know? We worked for Wilson Sporting Goods. He
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: used to do a lot of stuff with the bills
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: and uh he actually my uncle uncovered in the basement
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: assigned O. J. Simpson football that my dad had gotten
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: in recent really, which is kind of a spooky fine
- 1:24:01Speaker 5: not I don't know, That's exactly what I'm wondering, Like,
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: what do I do? Is is this Bill's ring of honors?
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: Bill's a glove down there?
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: Hey, what's kind of cool? Question? What's up with the sign?
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: You know?
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: The signing where they usually put like Bill's fans of
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: the year. There's like a big sign right next to
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: the stadium that's like this billboard can be rented by
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: any NFL team or fans. I saw that. It's like,
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: so that's actively recruiting trolls to come, like put something
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: right to Patriot playoffs every year. Now that you don't
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: have a sign right, sorry.
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: Shrewsbury writes in sorry, but I had to turn you
- 1:24:32Speaker 6: guys off, same old stuff. Could have, would have should have.
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: I'm sorry BB didn't solicit your draft input. I'm sorry
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: he won't let you rework the offense and these callers.
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: First off, as Fred says, it's only football. Second, as
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: a fan, I look for positive play and potential improvement.
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: I don't need to wallow in this stuff. I'm okay
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: with the draft and I'm looking forward to improvement.
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: Okay, I'm okay with the draft.
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: I'm okay with the draft.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: I mean, I just could have done without the three
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: interior offensive linemen. But like other than that, I think,
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: like I think they got some fun though, Evan, I mean,
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: I think though what we're I am.
- 1:25:05Speaker 7: I'm okay with the draft.
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: I'm okay with it, but I think that this this
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: is a critical draft that they had to nail, and
- 1:25:11Speaker 5: I don't know if they nailed it, I'm okay with it,
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: but I think that that the bar is higher, and
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: then if they don't get three plus contributors.
- 1:25:19Speaker 7: Out of this class, it's It's like I like to try,
- 1:25:22Speaker 7: and I know I don't always do it because we're
- 1:25:24Speaker 7: all kind of we all fall into traps. But I
- 1:25:27Speaker 7: try to stay consistent with mindsets, and I generally, you know,
- 1:25:32Speaker 7: don't feel like you know the day three stuff.
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: You're you're you're consistent with that. You never get worked
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: up either way about Day three.
- 1:25:40Speaker 7: To me, it's all gravy. If you get something out
- 1:25:42Speaker 7: of a Day three pick, that's awesome. I don't kill
- 1:25:44Speaker 7: teams for not nailing Day three picks. Now, I totally
- 1:25:47Speaker 7: understand where ever it's coming from in terms of mindsets
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: and things like that, and everything that Evan is railed
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: against today, I would one hundred percent agree with. But
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: this is gonna come down to me, Like most drafts,
- 1:25:58Speaker 7: if you get a really good player in the first
- 1:26:00Speaker 7: round and you get a really good player in the
- 1:26:02Speaker 7: second round, that's a pretty good draft. Like if you
- 1:26:05Speaker 7: get impact, guys, now, don't confuse starters with impact. Like
- 1:26:10Speaker 7: I read something that Daniel Jeremiah was one of his
- 1:26:12Speaker 7: conference calls. You know, my my feeling is if you
- 1:26:15Speaker 7: get three starters out of a draft, that's a successful draft,
- 1:26:18Speaker 7: sure on paper, But who are the starters?
- 1:26:21Speaker 26: Right?
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: And what starters?
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: Bill?
- 1:26:23Speaker 7: You know, is it Kyle Duggar that's a good draft pick?
- 1:26:26Speaker 6: What was the base line?
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: You know, Cole Strange so far that's the starter? That's
- 1:26:31Speaker 7: an okay draft pick?
- 1:26:32Speaker 16: Right?
- 1:26:33Speaker 25: Right?
- 1:26:34Speaker 7: Like there's there's a there's a difference there, you know.
- 1:26:38Speaker 7: And yeah, and and like you know, three starters on
- 1:26:41Speaker 7: like the Chicago Bears isn't the same as three starters
- 1:26:45Speaker 7: out of the draft for the Kansas City Chiefs, right, Like,
- 1:26:47Speaker 7: how many opportunities are there for you know, a really good,
- 1:26:51Speaker 7: you know, perennial playoff team. How many openings they have
- 1:26:54Speaker 7: legit starting starting lineup? That's and that's in Tavan's point.
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: You feel like that there are still these kind of
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: open roster spots that don't really have much competition, and
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: and and they're in very important positions. They feel like
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: it's like the.
- 1:27:08Speaker 7: Thing I reel against all the time. Everybody thinks it, right,
- 1:27:11Speaker 7: where'd you go with a safe pick? What's that offs
- 1:27:16Speaker 7: round tackle? Safe pick? It's just because those guys play
- 1:27:20Speaker 7: and you can't rip them apart like you can Nikhil Harry.
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure grow will get that question tonight. It
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: seems like you guys really are stacked up on the
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: interior line. Do you have any concern that you might
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: have too many and that you're gonna end up having
- 1:27:32Speaker 5: to cut some guys that.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: You've recent I think that's a good question. I also
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: think the good question is too, is Matt it looks like,
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: based off your draft that you really like your offense,
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: like you like your ones on the offensive side of
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: the football.
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: You got to paint them into the corner. So you
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: really like it.
- 1:27:48Speaker 18: Huh?
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: You like the offense right?
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: Pumping up for us?
- 1:27:51Speaker 7: I think the biggest offense, Yeah, I like my offense comment.
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing is is that by going
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: defense with the first three picks at the top of
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: the draft, you did kind of miss the boat and
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: getting an impact offensive player at any position, tackle, tight end, wide, receiver, whatever.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: So because you did that, now we're in the part
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: of the draft where we're really just throwing darts and
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: taking flyers on players with some upside dude to probably trades,
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: athletic profiles, things like that, and you kind of missed
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: that boat. So that that's the tough part I think
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: for me is that you know that Day two pass
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: catcher didn't come, that Day two tight end didn't come.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: So I'm not necessarily railing up against These picks are
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: a result of the fact that you just missed the
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: wave on, you know, in the first three rounds of
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: the draft. So now you're at a point where, yeah,
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: the receiver you're going to take in the sixth round
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: is no different than the receiver you're going to take
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: in the fourth.
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: Let's go to Ken in Louisiana. Hey, Ken, Kenny, Ken,
- 1:28:51Speaker 6: you killed Ken in Louisiana? Is not there? How about
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: Mike and Braintree? What's up? Mike Forward?
- 1:29:01Speaker 16: I'm a long time listener, third time caler.
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: Okay, and I had.
- 1:29:05Speaker 16: One point to address and two questions about the defense.
- 1:29:08Speaker 16: I hope that's not too greedy.
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: Okay, go ahead, I'd like to.
- 1:29:11Speaker 16: Address I think it was Paul that made the point
- 1:29:13Speaker 16: that we are kind of testing Mac Jones to see
- 1:29:17Speaker 16: what we really have in him by not assisting him
- 1:29:20Speaker 16: in the passing game, by not picking up a pass
- 1:29:22Speaker 16: catcher pretty much at all. And I'm wondering, do you
- 1:29:26Speaker 16: think he will pass that test this year with the
- 1:29:29Speaker 16: new options offensive coordinator or how do you feel about that?
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: It's a good question. I don't think anyone knows that.
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: I think it's a great question of this year. I mean,
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: that's that's you know, how much of an impact and
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: difference is Bill O'Brien make with Mac Jones and and
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: and the weapons that they clearly are ready to answer.
- 1:29:45Speaker 6: He's got to look better than last year. It's not
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: a high.
- 1:29:50Speaker 7: Will look better than last year?
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: Right, that's the big thing. Will he be better than
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: he was?
- 1:29:55Speaker 6: And it has to look better than his rookie year.
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: Does tread and water at best?
- 1:30:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I'm not saying it will. But in
- 1:30:04Speaker 6: order for me to say, oh, Mac Jones is a
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: good quarterback, it has to look better than his rookie year.
- 1:30:10Speaker 17: Do you have any absolutely agree?
- 1:30:13Speaker 16: I have two questions about the defense. One of them
- 1:30:15Speaker 16: is kind of basic with the loss of Devin mccordy,
- 1:30:18Speaker 16: but the addition of Christian Gonzalez and Kean White. Do
- 1:30:21Speaker 16: you think they have improved, stayed the same, or gotten
- 1:30:24Speaker 16: a little worse.
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: I think they've improved.
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so. I just I mean, I always
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: think they're going to be pretty good. So it's hard
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: for me to say.
- 1:30:34Speaker 6: Dallas, who always think he's going to be then that
- 1:30:37Speaker 6: trickle effect for the cornerback.
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: That should make the secondary better.
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: It should, but it's hard to project that.
- 1:30:43Speaker 7: That's hard.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: I'm saying it's a huge but he should get them.
- 1:30:48Speaker 7: It's hard to say that on day one, But yeah,
- 1:30:50Speaker 7: I think I think he should make the rest of
- 1:30:52Speaker 7: the cornerback.
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: Group everybody else falls into a place where they should
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: more be playing. I like, I'm talking about Jonathan Jones
- 1:31:00Speaker 6: and all those guys moved to places where they should be.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: You know, I wouldn't put like Sauce Gardner level expectations
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: on him, but I think like the tier below that
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: of rookie impact players is in play for Christian Gonzales.
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: I think comparing anybody to Sauce and expecting him to
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: win Defensive Rookie of the Year is extremely lofty, But
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: you take that next step down, I think he can
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: be a high end starter as a rookie.
- 1:31:22Speaker 6: Thanks Mike, appreciate the call.
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: Uh do you do you have How do you view
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: the difference between Mac Jones Mac Jones with Josh McDaniels
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: Mac Jones versus Bill O'Brien. I mean not saying, oh,
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: I'm one's better or the other, but just I'm wondering
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: what the difference is.
- 1:31:37Speaker 18: Now.
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: The question is, how would Mac Jones be in his
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: third year with Josh McDaniels. Because Josh McDaniels got Mac
- 1:31:42Speaker 6: when he was a rookie, you know.
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean he should be really hit his stride,
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: you would think. And that's you know, I just I
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: wonder if Bill O'Brien can pick up where he left
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: off last year with you know, Maddy p and and
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: build on it.
- 1:31:53Speaker 6: I think he got to a race last year. You
- 1:31:55Speaker 6: got to pick up where he left off with Josh McDaniels.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: Yeah, And what is the influence of the college of
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: what Bill.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: That's what I'm excited about is that I think people
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: assume that Bill O'Brien has the same exact playbook as
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: Josh McDaniels, just because once upon a time he was
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: the Patriots offensive coordinator too. It's a pretty sign. It's
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: not significantly different in terms of terminology, but they they
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: go about things differently. They're not exactly the same coach.
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: I don't think so. I think you're gonna see some
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: college wrinkles. I do think you're gonna see a little
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: bit more of an RBO package. I think you're gonna
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: see more empty Bill O'Brien loves to go empty five wide,
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: empty host juke. That's that's his staple, right, So I
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: think you're gonna see some of that. I think that
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: there is a little bit of a more uh, you know,
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: Josh mcthio is very old school, full back in the backfield,
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: under center, power plays and then play action off of it.
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: Bill O'Brien's got a little bit of a different twist
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: on things.
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: That's what he learned at Carol O'Connor High School back then.
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: You know, is that where he went John Carroll University?
- 1:32:56Speaker 6: Oh was it John Carroll? Wasn't Carol O'Connor. No, do
- 1:32:58Speaker 6: you know who Carol?
- 1:33:00Speaker 7: We get idea.
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: You don't know who he is.
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: He was Archie, I know.
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: Sorry, sorry guy, you forget what you're talking.
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: Forgot how wicked, hands.
- 1:33:15Speaker 5: Wicked handsome I got coffee.
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: I'll tell you one thing I'm excited about that Evan
- 1:33:23Speaker 7: talks about with Billy Oh, is that you know that
- 1:33:25Speaker 7: story you told about Jameson Williams earlier, Like that that
- 1:33:28Speaker 7: kind of stuff to me, like maybe he does have
- 1:33:31Speaker 7: some different looks that he has to find to to
- 1:33:35Speaker 7: get guys off the line, get guys in the clear.
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: Utilize athleticism, you utilize.
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: Yeah, he uses a lot of like different splits and
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: bunches and and uh pick plays and rub routes and
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: things like that to get those guys off the line
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: of scrimmage and and really allow them to open up
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: their strides. And with a guy like Taekwon who's rail thin,
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: like you don't want him to have to get off
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: press man by himself too often. And I think Billy
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: O will help him in that regard.
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: Let's see Anthony says, oh, I hate this draft after
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: the second round? Is it possible? Bill and company think
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: keeping on when you and moving him to tackle is
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: a future plan. And that's the reason to throw darts
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: at the inside O line.
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: It's it's you.
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: I can't roll it out now. I just I think
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: with on Wnu and he's talked about it a little
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: bit as well. You just got to find a spot
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: for him and let him stick there and let him
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: develop as a player. I continuing to move him inside
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: and outside. You're playing mind games with him, and it's
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: one thing that you have that's that's a good player,
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: that you can really hang your hat on that you
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: have this really good guard. I just would hate to
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: all then kick him back outside and then all of
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: a sudden, it's a whole other can of worms for him.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: And I would also just mention that you know, when
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: they flip flop Trent Brown and Isaiah Win, those two
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: guys showed up to Mini caamp and had no idea
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: that that was going on. So if they're gonna kick
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: on outside and that's the plan, then I really hope
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: that they've communicated that with him.
- 1:35:00Speaker 6: Ben and Florida says, I'm someone who believed that Bill
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: needed to be fired, not because he can't win games
- 1:35:07Speaker 6: as a coach, but because he can no longer build
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: a team that competes in today's NFL. When Bill leads
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: the Patriots, he will leave behind a team in far
- 1:35:15Speaker 6: worse shape than when he became the head coach.
- 1:35:18Speaker 7: Will have it that is not true.
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: Yeah, mister Kraft will have a tough decision to make
- 1:35:22Speaker 6: when the Patriots missed the playoff.
- 1:35:23Speaker 7: They didn't even have fifty three players when he took over. Yeah,
- 1:35:27Speaker 7: that's I mean, that's not true. Yeah, that's a gross exaggeration.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: I would also say it's not true that the players
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: that they drafted on defense at the top of the
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: draft is archaic. Click Christian Gonzalez is exactly what the
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: league wants nowadays, a four to three eight six foot
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: one outside corner, and Mapu is like the total opposite
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: of dinosaur, you know, two hundred and sixty pound plotting linebacker.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: You know, he's the total antithesis of that. So that
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: does give me some hope a little bit that some
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: of these guys are that new age pro. Gonzalez is
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: what every single team wants at that corner position, long, fast,
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: outside corner.
- 1:36:06Speaker 6: Rick writes in they're thirty one teams every year that lose,
- 1:36:09Speaker 6: thirty one teams that don't win the Super Bowl. Great drafts.
- 1:36:12Speaker 6: So far, We've lost the plot drafts from twenty sixteen
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: to twenty twenty, but the last three have been solid.
- 1:36:19Speaker 6: Building a team inside and out.
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: I thought twenty twenty was solid up the middle.
- 1:36:23Speaker 7: Twenty twenty was better than last year.
- 1:36:25Speaker 6: Yeah, we're zigging without getting two off the plot? Okay,
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: all right?
- 1:36:32Speaker 7: Like what what is like? You know, forgive me for
- 1:36:35Speaker 7: not being hip with the lingo, but what is off
- 1:36:37Speaker 7: the plot?
- 1:36:38Speaker 18: Need?
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: It might be the reservation might be the same thing
- 1:36:40Speaker 6: as off the result.
- 1:36:42Speaker 7: So taking a guy from Sacramento State in the third
- 1:36:45Speaker 7: round is on the reservation.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: It's the opposite of chock Paul correct.
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: Let's see. Matt writes in really surprised that three interior
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: o line have been taken so far, even though it
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: was in need. Are there any tight ends that could
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: be targeted in the sixth round to be a blocker
- 1:37:03Speaker 6: that maybe some future receiving. I really like to see
- 1:37:07Speaker 6: two taken, as I think this is a spot that
- 1:37:09Speaker 6: could lead to playing time this year. Also, do you
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: believe a punter is inevitable in the sixth round? And
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: are there any developmental quarterbacks we're taking?
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: So Coons is still on the board, which tells me
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: that there's something going on with mister Kons. He did
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: he was injured last year, and maybe that injury is
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: significant and maybe a long term concern for teams. I
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: really do like Brandon Willis from Oklahoma as well, but
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: he's more of like h back full back type of
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: tight end, not a real true tight end. Other than that,
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: we're really were in that straws at that position wide
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: receiver though. I still think there's some guys that can
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: play at Perry Xavier Hutchinson, Parker Washington, Ronnie Bell, Bryce
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: Ford Wheaton to Mario Douglas, Keishaon, Butte is still hanging
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: on there after that combine.
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: You know, Booty, I think you're down for a quarterback
- 1:38:04Speaker 7: Tanner McKey, who I don't really like. I don't know
- 1:38:07Speaker 7: how you guys are. Yeah, and Max Duggan.
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Max Duggan if
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: they had to take a quarterback. I'm glad that Tanner
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: McKee is here because I did not see it with
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: him at all, and we agreed on a lot of players.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: I was like, what is a surprise? You know, why
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: is it? Why is he the consensus second rated quarterback
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: in this draft? You know, in that like next tier
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: of quarterbacks, right, it was like a fucker and Tanner
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: and Tanner McKee and I'm just like what why Like,
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: I would much rather Jake Hayner than this kid.
- 1:38:37Speaker 7: I liked j Cayner a little bit, a little small,
- 1:38:39Speaker 7: but I liked him.
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: We are onto the sixth round, and yes we are
- 1:38:44Speaker 6: already made their first pick. The Patriots are sitting at
- 1:38:48Speaker 6: ten in the sixth round. They also have fifteen. They've
- 1:38:53Speaker 6: got a choice at thirty three and thirty seven. Four
- 1:39:00Speaker 6: he picks in this round.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: Oh so they're also just to mention, not past catching this.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: But running backs still has some running There's still some
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: running backs on the board. That would be Juice fawn
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: is still on the board. Dwayne McBride from UA B
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: is still on the board. Sean Tucker from Syracuse is decent,
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: Kenny McIntosh, Chris Rodriguez, Zach Evans. Yeah, there's still some
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: The running backs are not gone yet.
- 1:39:22Speaker 7: My Syracuse source says, don't sleep on that.
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: Sean Tucker is a decent player. I know you.
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: It is not Aaron no Robin Robin san Diego via Connecticut.
- 1:39:37Speaker 6: I'd like to push back a bit on the Day
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: three messaging that if the first two picks pan out,
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: then this was a good draft. I agree with Paul's
- 1:39:45Speaker 6: initial take on Day one that Bill kind of lucked
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: out with Gonzales falling. If you like him, just pick
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: him at fourteen, especially if you're not trading up later.
- 1:39:54Speaker 5: Can we move on.
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: I'm not sure how any of the other picks helped
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: the Patriots this year or couldn't have been f later
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: in the draft, freeing up space for at least one
- 1:40:02Speaker 6: offensive skill position player. The team is constituted today after
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: free agency and the draft cannot compete with the Bills
- 1:40:09Speaker 6: on paper and are up for debate with the Dolphins
- 1:40:12Speaker 6: and Jets. I agree with the callers that mister Krafts
- 1:40:15Speaker 6: words are ringing hollow as Bill does the same thing
- 1:40:18Speaker 6: and the team is not becoming more competitive.
- 1:40:21Speaker 7: Before I let the guys go in with the real analysis,
- 1:40:24Speaker 7: I would just ask give me the five guys they
- 1:40:27Speaker 7: should have taken in Day three that would have allowed
- 1:40:29Speaker 7: them to be on par on paper with Buffalo.
- 1:40:33Speaker 3: I don't think that they could have really done anything
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: in this offseason other than changing the quarterback. I could
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: have given it in the first I could get Jerry
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: Juti Higgins to compete with Buffalo.
- 1:40:45Speaker 7: I could give you the first ten picks today, first
- 1:40:48Speaker 7: ten picks of the fourth round are all yours. You're
- 1:40:50Speaker 7: not going to be on paper competitive with Kansas City
- 1:40:54Speaker 7: or Buffalo. You don't do it with you know, the
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: hundredth to the one hundred and tenth player in a draft. Disagree,
- 1:41:01Speaker 7: That's not how it works.
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 1:41:03Speaker 7: That's why I look at it, like, I think they
- 1:41:05Speaker 7: got good players with the first two picks. And if
- 1:41:08Speaker 7: those two guys are really good players, you're not gonna
- 1:41:10Speaker 7: sit there and say, yeah, it was a pretty good draft.
- 1:41:12Speaker 7: But like we missed out on. Now, somebody that got
- 1:41:16Speaker 7: taken today is going to turn out to be a
- 1:41:18Speaker 7: really good player, right, it always.
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: Happens, Charlie Jones.
- 1:41:23Speaker 7: But you don't know, Like, no, it's just hard to
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: sit there and say, wow, they really dropped the ball,
- 1:41:29Speaker 7: Like they didn't, Charlie Jones.
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: I'm not saying they dropped the ball, but they missed
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: the boat in the top one hundred that if they
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: wanted to add an impact playmaker on the offensive side
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: of the ball, it had to happen in the first
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: two nights of the draft, and by going defense with
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: those first three picks, they missed the boat then. And
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: now you're getting into a point where I agree to
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: that with them to an extent that I don't think
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: that there is a difference between the receiver you're going
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: to get in the fourth round besides Charlie Jones, because
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: that's my guy, but the receiver you're gonna get in
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: the fourth round and the receiver they if they do
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: draft a receiver with one of these sixth round picks,
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: it's it's a diamond dozen at this point. So I'm
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: not going to argue with them too much on that.
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: But I think what go back to my point at
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: the beginning is that they essentially did not add any
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: twenty twenty three talent to the offense via the draft.
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: They didn't add a single offensive player that's going to
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: help the twenty twenty three Patriots, and I think that
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: that is a big indictment on this class, regardless of
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: how Christian Gonzales and Kean White and Mapu and those
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: guys work out.
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: It's funny you say that, because when we talked to
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien yesterday, it almost sounds like he kind of
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: acknowledged it to a way, like, you know, in his response,
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: he's just like he's like, look, I'm concerned with the
- 1:42:40Speaker 5: guys that are here. You know, just one point I'd
- 1:42:43Speaker 5: like to make though, and I kind of touched on
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: it last night. It's like, are people really happy with
- 1:42:47Speaker 5: like the defensive front? Like I mean, is everyone just
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: ready to run it back with Guy and Godshaw and
- 1:42:52Speaker 5: Barmore and Dietrich Wise and you know, like like you
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: think that that's that group's going to get you over
- 1:42:57Speaker 5: the hump against Buffalo as far as that specific position group.
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: So like, I just personally, I think that you've seen
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: those guys you talk about, we know what we're getting
- 1:43:06Speaker 5: out of those guys. You need it to add some
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: kind of thing in there to maybe offer a potential
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: ceiling burster that you know, And I think that I
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: don't know if White's going to be that guy, but
- 1:43:15Speaker 5: at least now I feel like they've got a guy
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: that can fill multiple roles. And if one of these
- 1:43:18Speaker 5: guys starts to fade and they say, hey, Lawrence, guy,
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: you just don't got it anymore, Like maybe you actually
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: have something that can make an impact against Buffalo on
- 1:43:26Speaker 5: that side of the ball. I know it's not offense
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: and we're not gonna be able to keep paced with
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: thirty five whatever, but a good player.
- 1:43:30Speaker 7: But you make it as long as you as long
- 1:43:33Speaker 7: as you took a good player, Like.
- 1:43:35Speaker 5: Yeah, that's and he is. I mean, he's a good player.
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: I don't know if he's going to be as good
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: as they need him to be, but I think he
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: should be.
- 1:43:41Speaker 7: I just don't know, like if he turns out to
- 1:43:42Speaker 7: be a really, really good player, how much that impacts
- 1:43:44Speaker 7: wins and losses? You know, if he's not a guy
- 1:43:47Speaker 7: who impacks the passing game, right, And that's a question. Yeah,
- 1:43:51Speaker 7: I'll see him play and I'll.
- 1:43:52Speaker 6: Say, oh no.
- 1:43:53Speaker 7: But like I mean the obvious example and not apples
- 1:43:56Speaker 7: to oranges here, I mean not apples to apples. Everybody
- 1:43:59Speaker 7: in the said Tom Brady. He has all the you know,
- 1:44:02Speaker 7: all the intangibles, but he doesn't really have like the
- 1:44:06Speaker 7: arm strength is in question. The first day Fred Bryan
- 1:44:09Speaker 7: and I went out to rookie Mannie Camp, I was like,
- 1:44:12Speaker 7: he throws the ball. Fine, what are they talking about? Yeah,
- 1:44:14Speaker 7: Like it was clearly apparent that he could throw the
- 1:44:18Speaker 7: ball just as well as a lot of other guys
- 1:44:21Speaker 7: that played in the National Football League. Yeah, like maybe
- 1:44:24Speaker 7: I'll watch keyon White. Now what are they talking about?
- 1:44:28Speaker 7: This guy has potential to be an impact player in
- 1:44:31Speaker 7: the passing game. He can he can get after the passer.
- 1:44:33Speaker 6: We won't know until preseason.
- 1:44:35Speaker 7: No, no, no, well you won't know until the season season, right,
- 1:44:38Speaker 7: But like Dan Klecko was a stud pass rusher in
- 1:44:40Speaker 7: the preseason.
- 1:44:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean they didn't trade up for him. But
- 1:44:43Speaker 5: it reminds me a bit of bar Moore, you know.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: And it wasn't that like glaring need. But you're in
- 1:44:47Speaker 5: the second round and you say, hey, we got a
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: potential impact front seven guy that you know, and to
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: Paul's point in success, he's an every down player. He's
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: a guy that's gonna be able to set the edge
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: and be heavy against the run. And then when it
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: comes to passing downs you put with the speed on
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: the outside, you got Jude on coming off the other
- 1:45:04Speaker 5: and then you got him and Barmore in the middle
- 1:45:06Speaker 5: causing chaos. I mean, that's the that's the dream scenario
- 1:45:09Speaker 5: that he's a three down guy that impacts the.
- 1:45:11Speaker 7: Run in but at the same time, the other guy
- 1:45:12Speaker 7: needs to do that too. Barmore Yeah, oh yeah, because
- 1:45:15Speaker 7: even though he's my crush, you remember this before you
- 1:45:17Speaker 7: were here, V I mean, yeah, he was bounce back
- 1:45:20Speaker 7: for sure. Yeah, but a little disappointed. Maybe it's because
- 1:45:22Speaker 7: of my mind because I had him at a level
- 1:45:25Speaker 7: maybe that was too high and he hasn't reached it.
- 1:45:28Speaker 7: But if those two guys could do what you just said,
- 1:45:30Speaker 7: Mike again, you're gonna look back at this draft and say,
- 1:45:32Speaker 7: I got a corner who can cover and I don't
- 1:45:35Speaker 7: have to hide him when we played the good receivers
- 1:45:38Speaker 7: and I have a you know, these two guys that
- 1:45:41Speaker 7: really like not using words like Aaron Donald or anything
- 1:45:44Speaker 7: like that, but I had these two guys on the
- 1:45:46Speaker 7: inside that can be disrupted right right to come out ways.
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: I think that's the key word is both Barmore and
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: Keon Wide are really similar to the fact that they're disruptive,
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: but they're not the guys that are going to get
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: the sacks right right and adds Jude On and that
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: and that's the idea.
- 1:46:01Speaker 5: That right they eat the block gets the exactly.
- 1:46:05Speaker 6: I'm good with that. Sam in Toronto writes in does
- 1:46:08Speaker 6: anyone find it curious that Bill puts so much stock
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: in player character, maturity and culture fit over talent when
- 1:46:14Speaker 6: his favorite player of all time is Lawrence Taylor. Hypothetically,
- 1:46:18Speaker 6: if Lawrence Taylor was coming out of college today and
- 1:46:20Speaker 6: was on the board. Does anyone believe Bill would draft?
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: I like this question, and I've actually been putting some
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: thought into that, and I think that there's two things.
- 1:46:28Speaker 7: I think.
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: I think that there are certain players that are just
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: freaks that he can't stay away from. They're so good
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: at football. He's got to overlook some stuff. But I
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: would say generally, I think he knows how things go here,
- 1:46:39Speaker 5: and if you're not like one of those guys like
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: I mentioned earlier that's a football nerd and lives eats,
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: breathed football, you're not going to be set up for
- 1:46:46Speaker 5: success here. So I think that that that's somewhat of
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: a degree because you know, because of him, like I
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: know a lot of guys that have been successful without
- 1:46:53Speaker 5: that trait. Oh yeah, but because of what he does.
- 1:46:57Speaker 7: He knows he's not going to pick you. He knows,
- 1:46:59Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: It's funny. I was talking to Matt Light about the
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: thing I'm doing on Dante Scarnekia, and he said something
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: to me that really didn't stand out for this piece
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: and necessarily but standed out about his career with the
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: draft coming up, and he said that he hated watching film,
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: He hated football.
- 1:47:14Speaker 7: He never saw a game.
- 1:47:16Speaker 5: Yeah, he was kind of one of the guys that
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: popped up.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: He hated watching film, he hated meetings, He couldn't stay awake.
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: He said he walked in his first day getting here
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: after the draft, and he walked up to Dante and
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: he said he was trying to convince Dante that he
- 1:47:33Speaker 3: could sleep during meetings and and everything would be fine
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: if he didn't pay attention during the meetings. And then
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: he also told him some great stories about how he
- 1:47:41Speaker 3: would just you know, mess with Dante, you know, and
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: play pranks on him, like, you know, replacing the remote
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: with the remote that will zap you instead of one
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: that you know, stuff like that.
- 1:47:51Speaker 5: And I'm thinking to myself, this is.
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: A Red Jacket player, this is a Patriot Hall of Famer,
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: and we're talking about a guy. But then when we
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: get to the draft, we get emails like that, and
- 1:48:03Speaker 3: there's some merit to it that they want these football guys.
- 1:48:06Speaker 3: It's like Matt Light was the total opposite of that.
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: He was just good at football and he just made
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: it work.
- 1:48:11Speaker 7: It's just Lawrence Tail, you know, to the email, like
- 1:48:16Speaker 7: I think that he would rather have, Like listen, I
- 1:48:19Speaker 7: don't remember what the talk of with Lawrence tail off
- 1:48:22Speaker 7: the field was when he was coming out whatever, but
- 1:48:26Speaker 7: I think he would rather have guys like Lawrence Taylor
- 1:48:30Speaker 7: the second go around. That's when he lost the talent,
- 1:48:34Speaker 7: like you know. But now but now they've flamed out.
- 1:48:38Speaker 7: Well for whatever reason, they're available and now I get
- 1:48:41Speaker 7: them on my terms. I think he'd rather have that situation.
- 1:48:44Speaker 7: Then I'm taking this guy number two, because everybody loves
- 1:48:47Speaker 7: this guy. I mean everybody like he's a can't miss.
- 1:48:50Speaker 7: I think you'd rather have it. Well, he missed and
- 1:48:52Speaker 7: now I'm going to fix them.
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: Yeah, there's some guys in this draft, like just talking
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: about Mapou and some of the linebackers that went around there,
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: like Tomorrio over from Texas was a guy has a
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: very very similar skill set like this hybrid safety linebacker
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: two hundred and twenty pounds, really athletic. But Overshown has
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: been hyped in the draft for two straight years now
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: because he might have come out as a junior. He's
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: a five star recruit, he played football at Texas. He
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: just my guess is that he's that type of guy
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: that just thinks he's s doesn't stink and like already
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: knows that he's a big man on campus. Whereas this
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: Mapu kid from Sacramento State's gonna come here with a
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: chip on his shoulder, a work ethic, a guy that
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: you know, Mike, you were talking about how he grinds
- 1:49:34Speaker 3: tape and all this kind of stuff like that. In
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: the third round, like, yeah, I think they would rather
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: have the culture fit. Maybe at the top of the
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: draft they wouldn't care as much, but I think in
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: the third round it does matter to them.
- 1:49:46Speaker 6: Richard in Ohio says, I want to make one thing clear. First,
- 1:49:50Speaker 6: we are not winning the Super Bowl this season. I
- 1:49:52Speaker 6: don't see why people are going around like chicken little
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: screaming the sky is falling. With these Day three picks,
- 1:49:58Speaker 6: rounds one through three, all three players will start, that's
- 1:50:01Speaker 6: my prediction. But these Day three guys are for the future.
- 1:50:05Speaker 6: We always have this draft grief every year. I don't
- 1:50:08Speaker 6: understand it.
- 1:50:10Speaker 7: Well, it's just it's the it's the We don't always
- 1:50:12Speaker 7: have this draft grief.
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: It's the sum of the parts of the last few seasons.
- 1:50:16Speaker 5: And you know, you're just you're getting to the point.
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: As I said before, where you can't afford to miss
- 1:50:20Speaker 5: on these guys. They have to find some blue chip
- 1:50:22Speaker 5: players that change games. And you know, maybe you're right
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: those first three picks, they picked, what three guys on
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: each level of the defense, Maybe they do all pan
- 1:50:29Speaker 5: out and maybe those three guys form a new core
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: of a defense that fits more into the modern game
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: because it didn't fit the offensive needs that you know,
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: we're so desperate for after last season, and it's such
- 1:50:39Speaker 5: a triggering thing after watching that offense and how inept
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: they were. But I do think that there's something there
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: of you know, maybe maybe there are some some pieces
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: on defense that you know, can carry you into that
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: next kind of level, that different kind of football that
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: we feel like they need to play.
- 1:50:53Speaker 7: Yeah, and I know that it's like a little snappy
- 1:50:55Speaker 7: thing like they're not going to win the super Bowl
- 1:50:56Speaker 7: this year? Okay. I mean I would probably agree that
- 1:50:59Speaker 7: no matter what happened this draft, they weren't going to
- 1:51:01Speaker 7: be a Super Bowl contender. Can I expect to be
- 1:51:03Speaker 7: closer to.
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: That goal after a draft against the good teams?
- 1:51:07Speaker 7: You know, That's what I'm saying, Like, Can I? And
- 1:51:10Speaker 7: what I'm hoping is, as we've been talking about Christian
- 1:51:14Speaker 7: Gonzales makes you a little bit more prepared to go
- 1:51:16Speaker 7: against some of these high powered passing games, and that
- 1:51:18Speaker 7: helps you. And we just talked about key on White
- 1:51:21Speaker 7: like kind of the last segment about how him and
- 1:51:23Speaker 7: Barmore could help you be a little bit more disruptive
- 1:51:26Speaker 7: in the front seven. And if that happens, then I
- 1:51:29Speaker 7: think you are a little bit closer because now instead
- 1:51:31Speaker 7: of having a defense that's let's face it, let's let's
- 1:51:34Speaker 7: be honest, is paper tigers. They beat up on a
- 1:51:37Speaker 7: lot of bad teams and they struggle against good ones.
- 1:51:39Speaker 7: Now you have a team that beats up on bad
- 1:51:42Speaker 7: teams and is competitive against the good ones possible. So
- 1:51:44Speaker 7: that makes you closer to where you want to be.
- 1:51:47Speaker 7: What's wrong with that?
- 1:51:48Speaker 3: I do wonder if they looked at the thing along
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: those same lines. I do wonder if they looked at
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: their roster and they said, in order to get one
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: side of the ball to that point where we're competitive
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: with the really good teams in the league, we don't
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: have the draft capital to do it on both sides
- 1:52:06Speaker 3: of the football in this draft the way that the
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: board was shaking out, so instead they really attack defense
- 1:52:12Speaker 3: early in the draft and now maybe they feel like
- 1:52:15Speaker 3: they have the defense settled, and yeah, we still need
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: to worry about the offense and that still has glaring needs.
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: But I don't know if they did what we could right. Yeah,
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: I don't know if they felt like they could do
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: it all right in this draft. It's not like they're
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: the Texans that had they had two first round picks.
- 1:52:31Speaker 7: You just got to hope that they find a way
- 1:52:32Speaker 7: to retain the guys that you deem worthy of retention.
- 1:52:36Speaker 5: I mean, you know, on the flip side, just looking
- 1:52:38Speaker 5: at the defense's depth start right now, like it's intriguing
- 1:52:41Speaker 5: to me. I mean, you know, I know, I know
- 1:52:42Speaker 5: they have some questions with you know, mccordy on the
- 1:52:44Speaker 5: back end, but you look at Mills, maybe he can
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: slide into that role. But with all the strong safeties,
- 1:52:49Speaker 5: with bringing Peppers back, with having Marcus Jones and Jack Jones,
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: you know, what are they going to be like in
- 1:52:53Speaker 5: their second seasons? There's some pieces here. And I would
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: just say, lastly, like if I looked at that front seven,
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: you know, more of the defense line guys without Keyon White,
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: I would be underwhelm right now. I'd be like, it's
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: the same group. If Barmore gets hurt again, it's the
- 1:53:06Speaker 5: same group, the same kind of problems. There's nothing there
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: that played reasonably well last year, wouldn't you say? I
- 1:53:11Speaker 5: thought they did a decent I thought they were improved
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: against the run, and I thought that they did a
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: great job of I mean, maybe you could argue that
- 1:53:17Speaker 5: they schemed up the pressure, but I mean they were
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: among the league leaders in sacks, right.
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I don't think Maybe they always, you know,
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: they always scheme up pressure. I'm not going to say
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: that they didn't, but I think josh U j really
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: took that next step as a pass rusher and became
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: a real force for them.
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: I'm really anxious if he takes another step and White
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: kind of integrates into the pass rush a little bit,
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: maybe if he's able to get some push and you know,
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: upgrade whatever they got from a quality last year. You know,
- 1:53:43Speaker 5: I mean, there's there's there's some pieces here, for sure.
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: Paul and Arkansas says, I cannot believe the absolute crying
- 1:53:49Speaker 6: and moaning. Did the writer really say Bill doesn't know
- 1:53:52Speaker 6: how to build a team. We just drafted a lockdown
- 1:53:54Speaker 6: corner and all American linebacker slash safety hybrid and stocked
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: up on lineman depth. Would we desperately needed replaced our
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: forty year old kicker who doesn't have a leg. Come on, people,
- 1:54:04Speaker 6: we're beholding.
- 1:54:06Speaker 7: An a linebacker from Sacramento.
- 1:54:09Speaker 6: Defense as of right now on paper is one of
- 1:54:11Speaker 6: the best in the league.
- 1:54:12Speaker 5: Defensive player of the year too.
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: The what writers, Okay, yeah it was the email. I
- 1:54:22Speaker 3: just want to make sure that everybody knows we didn't
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: We didn't say anything.
- 1:54:25Speaker 7: You know, But I mean, can you talk about a
- 1:54:27Speaker 7: ridiculously overly optimistic view of the I mean, if if
- 1:54:32Speaker 7: Marpoo works out and I'm wrong, great, fine, an All
- 1:54:35Speaker 7: American linebacker they draft safe safety linebacker hybrid from Zacrimento State.
- 1:54:41Speaker 7: Like to Evans's point, if they took the same pick
- 1:54:45Speaker 7: with Overshan, I at least would be able to say
- 1:54:49Speaker 7: he did it at the highest level. The size wasn't
- 1:54:51Speaker 7: a problem.
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:54:53Speaker 7: About an hour ago we talked at length about Gerard
- 1:54:56Speaker 7: Mayo working with this guy and trying to get out
- 1:54:58Speaker 7: just I don't worry about him mentally at all. I
- 1:55:00Speaker 7: worry about whether or not he's physically gifted enough to
- 1:55:02Speaker 7: make a jump from Sacramento State to the NFL. That's
- 1:55:06Speaker 7: the only thing I have concerns about.
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: I don't. I don't.
- 1:55:10Speaker 7: He's a film junkie. Great, I don't worry about him
- 1:55:13Speaker 7: being prepared. Yeah, I worry about him being able to
- 1:55:15Speaker 7: play at this level.
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: And as good as he was at the senior boy there,
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: I mean, I mentioned the screen where he got flattened
- 1:55:21Speaker 3: by the Minnesota Center, but there are he's he's gonna
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: get blocked if he gets caught right like he's he's
- 1:55:26Speaker 3: one of those guys that needs to win with his
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: explosiveness and with his athleticism. The second that he gets
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: caught by an offensive lineman, he's gonna end up in
- 1:55:34Speaker 3: the ground.
- 1:55:36Speaker 7: Might have been able to play like a hybrid role
- 1:55:39Speaker 7: at that size because of the level he was playing at.
- 1:55:42Speaker 7: Like I mean, Matt Milano is not that much bigger
- 1:55:45Speaker 7: than that, right right, Evan. I think it might have
- 1:55:48Speaker 7: been off air, but Evan brought up Matt Milano a
- 1:55:50Speaker 7: long time ago, and he's not that much bigger. But again,
- 1:55:54Speaker 7: you know, Boston College is not Sacramento State. He played
- 1:55:57Speaker 7: in the ACC.
- 1:55:59Speaker 6: Let's go to Tyler and Marylyn, one of our last
- 1:56:01Speaker 6: callers of the show, what's up, Tyler.
- 1:56:04Speaker 26: But going on, guys, hey, seeing how the draft played out,
- 1:56:09Speaker 26: if party all wondering should we have taken maybe Za
- 1:56:13Speaker 26: Flyers or Christian Goan Zaliz just seeing how it's played out,
- 1:56:17Speaker 26: I'm glad they like that.
- 1:56:19Speaker 7: No, I would have been okay with that. I mean,
- 1:56:21Speaker 7: I like, I like Gonzalas. I'm fine with.
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I would I choose Gonzales over over.
- 1:56:27Speaker 7: Okay, I like Gonzaldies. That was my dream.
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: The two second guesses I'm going to have from this
- 1:56:32Speaker 3: draft at the receiver position are not maybe not Jonathan Mingo,
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: like because I think he got drafted at thirty eight
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: or thirty nine, so you could have packaged some picket
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: picks to move up and draft a guy like Jonathan Mingo.
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: And then Downs like those are going to be the two.
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: If Downs ends up being a good player in Indianapolis,
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: that's gonna be. That's gonna be the one that's gonna stay.
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: Assume here this year.
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: Patriots are two picks away, so we're going on for
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: that pick close to four. But we'll stay on the air.
- 1:57:02Speaker 6: That Patriots pick always given you more. Yeah, we'll stay
- 1:57:07Speaker 6: in the air till that tenth pick of the sixth round,
- 1:57:10Speaker 6: number one eighty seven overall.
- 1:57:12Speaker 7: Three again pick you're out, Yeah.
- 1:57:15Speaker 6: The Jags, the Jaguars, pick is in, It's then it's
- 1:57:19Speaker 6: the Titans, then it's the Patriots.
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: Nothing and like it.
- 1:57:22Speaker 6: So while we're waiting for that, Connor in Boston says,
- 1:57:25Speaker 6: not sure if you guys have mentioned it yet, but
- 1:57:27Speaker 6: fifth round pick Antonio Maffi has two Patriots connections. He's
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: Devin Asiassi's cousin and went to the same high school
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: as Brady and San Matteo.
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: Grow up of Patriots fans.
- 1:57:38Speaker 7: We did mention the high school I didn't know about.
- 1:57:43Speaker 6: Okay, let's see. Colin writes in love the coverage. I
- 1:57:48Speaker 6: was almost as excited that Deuce and Evan had Gonzales
- 1:57:51Speaker 6: on their big boards as they was that we drafted him.
- 1:57:54Speaker 6: I'm really let down we passed on all the wide
- 1:57:56Speaker 6: receivers and tight ends in the second and third round.
- 1:57:58Speaker 6: My question interior o line picks, is there any chance
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: they are thinking of bumping on when you or strange
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: to tackle?
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: Not strange?
- 1:58:08Speaker 5: I actually, I mean we did talk about that already
- 1:58:09Speaker 5: a little bit. I mean, what about it when you
- 1:58:11Speaker 5: trade and everybody wants to trade somebody going into the
- 1:58:13Speaker 5: last year of their deal.
- 1:58:15Speaker 3: Let's trade one of the good players we have.
- 1:58:17Speaker 7: I really don't like that.
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: I understand why you're thinking.
- 1:58:21Speaker 7: No, I do too. I get the why. I just
- 1:58:23Speaker 7: don't want it. If you could get a player, you know,
- 1:58:25Speaker 7: what is that? What are you getting from Michael?
- 1:58:27Speaker 5: Well, you package him in a pick next year, maybe get.
- 1:58:32Speaker 7: You You're not getting Jerry Judy for a guard. Well
- 1:58:37Speaker 7: I shouldn't. I shouldn't say you're not because I never
- 1:58:39Speaker 7: dismissed the abject stupidity of the remainder of the league.
- 1:58:42Speaker 5: I wish someone could talk me out of it, because
- 1:58:44Speaker 5: I just and I and this all came about because
- 1:58:46Speaker 5: of the cold strange thing. It's like with a guard.
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: I don't mean to disrespect the position, but it's just like,
- 1:58:51Speaker 5: even if you get the two absolute best guards in
- 1:58:54Speaker 5: the whole league, does it make that much of a difference.
- 1:58:57Speaker 5: That's like, is it that much of a difference then
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: if you had the two most average guards in the league.
- 1:59:02Speaker 7: Much lesser extent. That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:59:04Speaker 3: With like bar More and White, I think that the
- 1:59:07Speaker 3: the other because I'm going I'm going more positive I'm
- 1:59:10Speaker 3: trying to be a little bit more sunshiny because I
- 1:59:12Speaker 3: agree that getting all hot and bothered by fourth round
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: picks is probably not the right thing to do. I
- 1:59:17Speaker 3: do think that you can take some solace from this
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: draft that they hit at the top of the draft
- 1:59:23Speaker 3: on what I do really believe is a premium position
- 1:59:26Speaker 3: in corner. And I think they would argue that defensive
- 1:59:29Speaker 3: end is a premium position on their on their in
- 1:59:31Speaker 3: their system, on their defense. So this is not a guard, right,
- 1:59:35Speaker 3: And I think that you're just talking about all these guards.
- 1:59:37Speaker 3: It's like that that was the problem with with a
- 1:59:40Speaker 3: pick like Cole Strange, was that that position just inherently
- 1:59:44Speaker 3: doesn't move the needle. Yeah, it just isn't a premium
- 1:59:47Speaker 3: position that is going to make a difference in your team.
- 1:59:51Speaker 3: So they got they got some players in here at
- 1:59:53Speaker 3: the top of the draft that at least are at
- 1:59:55Speaker 3: positions that you can say that's a number one corner,
- 1:59:58Speaker 3: that's maybe another wrecker on the defensive line, and that
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: matters against a good team.
- 2:00:03Speaker 6: Jake and Chicago says, somebody get Evan off the ledge.
- 2:00:07Speaker 6: I'm thrilled to have some depth. We have a pocket
- 2:00:09Speaker 6: passer in mac Jones, and he had zero time last year.
- 2:00:12Speaker 6: It starts with the old line. They have plenty of
- 2:00:14Speaker 6: pass catchers. Even Born commented last season that Mac needed
- 2:00:18Speaker 6: more time.
- 2:00:19Speaker 5: So why does depth at the offensive line help that?
- 2:00:22Speaker 18: That's what I don't understand that I was thinking the
- 2:00:24Speaker 18: whole thing, unless you're gonna tell me that that the
- 2:00:27Speaker 18: competition between all ten of those guys is going to
- 2:00:29Speaker 18: produce an unknown result that is far, will far surpass
- 2:00:32Speaker 18: what we've seen.
- 2:00:33Speaker 7: Because no matter what happened, like, it's not a good sign. Like,
- 2:00:38Speaker 7: if you're trying to tell me they need better than
- 2:00:40Speaker 7: what they had last year, then that's not good because
- 2:00:43Speaker 7: they drafted the guy last year.
- 2:00:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but I would also just say that my whole
- 2:00:47Speaker 3: point is not Okay, fine, great, you got your depth
- 2:00:50Speaker 3: offensive lineman.
- 2:00:52Speaker 5: Oh why can I say it out loud?
- 2:00:55Speaker 7: Are you excited?
- 2:00:56Speaker 5: I'm excited?
- 2:00:57Speaker 6: Oh? Good for the Patriots.
- 2:00:59Speaker 3: For the Patriots a receiver.
- 2:01:00Speaker 5: The Patriots have drafted Kaishawn Boute from LSU.
- 2:01:05Speaker 3: He got a receiver.
- 2:01:06Speaker 5: Baby.
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: You like him?
- 2:01:08Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 2:01:09Speaker 5: Y I don't.
- 2:01:10Speaker 7: But here's what I do like about it? Where they
- 2:01:14Speaker 7: picked him. Yes, because this is a guy who should
- 2:01:17Speaker 7: have gone like heading into the year, he would have
- 2:01:20Speaker 7: gone like five rounds earlier.
- 2:01:21Speaker 3: Okay, so this is the thing.
- 2:01:23Speaker 7: So that's what I do like about them.
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: This receiver class had a lot of concerns and question
- 2:01:27Speaker 3: marks around the league. This is a player that if
- 2:01:30Speaker 3: you if our lads had made their guide a year ago, yes,
- 2:01:35Speaker 3: the number one receiver in this class would have been Kashan.
- 2:01:38Speaker 5: They have been him absolutely, and going into.
- 2:01:40Speaker 3: The combine, both Sparta and I were extremely high on
- 2:01:44Speaker 3: the player because you see a lot of explosiveness and
- 2:01:47Speaker 3: contact balance after the catch especially, and he went to
- 2:01:50Speaker 3: the combine and he bombed, like there's no doubt about it.
- 2:01:53Speaker 3: He absolutely bombed the combine and that brought up questions
- 2:01:58Speaker 3: not only about his athletic profile, his work ethic as well.
- 2:02:01Speaker 3: One hundred percent exactly where I was going. But he's
- 2:02:05Speaker 3: an ultra talented receiver. There's definitely some upside with this
- 2:02:09Speaker 3: pick and some real optimism that he could be something
- 2:02:12Speaker 3: if you can get that twenty twenty one version out
- 2:02:14Speaker 3: of him. I really wonder if they met with him
- 2:02:17Speaker 3: in this process, if it's a secret thirty visit we
- 2:02:20Speaker 3: didn't know about or something like that, because there's some
- 2:02:22Speaker 3: there's some character concerns with the player. I mean, you
- 2:02:26Speaker 3: talk about what he did at the combine, you talk
- 2:02:28Speaker 3: about how his career at LSU ended. I don't want
- 2:02:30Speaker 3: to get too much into it on air about how
- 2:02:32Speaker 3: it ended at LSU, but it wasn't pretty, I'll put
- 2:02:35Speaker 3: it to you that way. And you got to make
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: sure that he's screwed in tight, right. You got to
- 2:02:41Speaker 3: make sure that his head's on straight. But there's no
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: doubt about it that the kids talented. He can play football.
- 2:02:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean our LATS has him as a third
- 2:02:49Speaker 6: or fourth round pick.
- 2:02:50Speaker 7: Yeah, this is one where I'll take it because I
- 2:02:56Speaker 7: deserve it, because it's hypocritical. You can absolutely could a
- 2:03:00Speaker 7: size me for being a fraud. I love this pick.
- 2:03:03Speaker 7: I don't love this player, but I love the pick
- 2:03:05Speaker 7: and I understand how hypocritical that is. And I'll take
- 2:03:08Speaker 7: all the criticism that the you know, the listeners want
- 2:03:11Speaker 7: to give me. This is a guy. Is exactly what
- 2:03:13Speaker 7: Evan said. I remember the first game of the season,
- 2:03:16Speaker 7: I believe LSU and Florida State played. It was like
- 2:03:20Speaker 7: Labor Day weekend and everything was boote, boot Te boot Te.
- 2:03:25Speaker 7: This kid was like the second Coming and I'm watching
- 2:03:28Speaker 7: and I'm like, I'm part of the family, and he
- 2:03:30Speaker 7: was and he was really he was really quiet in
- 2:03:32Speaker 7: the game, and they were talking about getting him, you know,
- 2:03:34Speaker 7: on track, and I was like, Oh, this guy's really good.
- 2:03:37Speaker 7: This guy's really good. And then his stock jass went
- 2:03:39Speaker 7: down and down and down. And there's a lot of reasons,
- 2:03:42Speaker 7: but there's talent there.
- 2:03:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:03:44Speaker 7: So when you get a guy like that in the
- 2:03:46Speaker 7: sixth round, I love that pick. If they took this
- 2:03:49Speaker 7: guy in the second round, I would have hated it.
- 2:03:51Speaker 6: Yeah, this is this guy's a project, you know, he's
- 2:03:55Speaker 6: He was called out by Brian Kelly to get back
- 2:03:58Speaker 6: on track publicly, like Evan said, he didn't leave LSU
- 2:04:02Speaker 6: on the best of terms. That's going to be an issue.
- 2:04:05Speaker 6: But Dane Brugler says he's a confounding evaluation because he
- 2:04:10Speaker 6: shows the athletic talent to be an NFL weapon, but
- 2:04:14Speaker 6: his effort level doesn't always match his ability, and most
- 2:04:16Speaker 6: scouts view him as a slot only prospect. Though he
- 2:04:20Speaker 6: has NFL starting skills, the unpredictable nature of his game
- 2:04:24Speaker 6: complicates his pro projection. He's got him in the fourth round, though.
- 2:04:27Speaker 7: Fourth fourth round. NFL dot Com too. This is a
- 2:04:29Speaker 7: good like talent's not going to be why he doesn't
- 2:04:32Speaker 7: make it.
- 2:04:33Speaker 6: So he had red flags on a lot of boards
- 2:04:34Speaker 6: and that's why he slipped.
- 2:04:36Speaker 7: So that's why I love the pick.
- 2:04:37Speaker 6: So, Bill O'Brien, here's a guy for you.
- 2:04:40Speaker 7: Him straight.
- 2:04:41Speaker 3: So he's the thing that stands out to him with
- 2:04:44Speaker 3: him immediately is his ability to run with the football.
- 2:04:47Speaker 3: This guy has that you know, contact balance and explosiveness
- 2:04:52Speaker 3: with the football in his hands to really pick up
- 2:04:54Speaker 3: yards after the catch in bunches. I think a guy
- 2:04:57Speaker 3: that people really compared him to a before it all
- 2:05:00Speaker 3: went off the tracks for him was Deebo Samuel And
- 2:05:02Speaker 3: I'm not kidding like that was the guy that a
- 2:05:04Speaker 3: lot of people thought that he was going to be
- 2:05:06Speaker 3: and then it just completely the you know, the earth
- 2:05:09Speaker 3: kind of fell apart for him. I don't think he's
- 2:05:11Speaker 3: gonna be Deebo Samuel good. I think we can all
- 2:05:13Speaker 3: agree in that. But that's the sort of you know,
- 2:05:16Speaker 3: a stout frame, compact build, good explosiveness, can run through
- 2:05:21Speaker 3: arm tackles, and he's got some really flashy college tape.
- 2:05:24Speaker 3: There's I am excited. This is a pick that at
- 2:05:28Speaker 3: least they got one of these guys in this draft
- 2:05:30Speaker 3: that you can say brand name player, Kai sham Boute,
- 2:05:34Speaker 3: somebody that we all knew I was in the draft
- 2:05:36Speaker 3: guide like all that kind of stuff, And we'll see
- 2:05:39Speaker 3: what happens if they can get him screwed on and
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: this is gonna be somebody that can make an impact.
- 2:05:44Speaker 5: I just wonder what the last year's been like for him,
- 2:05:46Speaker 5: Like you know, was he was he kind of flying
- 2:05:47Speaker 5: high and now he's been humbled a bit or you know,
- 2:05:49Speaker 5: or is he just kind of a loose can and
- 2:05:51Speaker 5: then they're gonna say, hey, we get him in the
- 2:05:52Speaker 5: building and get him on the he'll be okay.
- 2:05:54Speaker 7: And it's gonna be a second I think it's the
- 2:05:56Speaker 7: second one based on the combine, Like you think that
- 2:05:58Speaker 7: would have been a humbling experience to come out that season.
- 2:06:01Speaker 7: You would get himself ready to go. But like I said,
- 2:06:04Speaker 7: sixth round talent won't be why he doesn't make it.
- 2:06:09Speaker 7: Everybody was really really high in this kid after his
- 2:06:12Speaker 7: first two years and then it didn't come together, you know,
- 2:06:15Speaker 7: you know last year. I just I love the idea
- 2:06:20Speaker 7: of this kind of a pick.
- 2:06:21Speaker 6: You know, Paul's a big LSU guy, So this you know,
- 2:06:24Speaker 6: I know you're making fun of me, but you wear
- 2:06:25Speaker 6: their stuff.
- 2:06:26Speaker 3: This was just all that we wanted. Yeah, it wasn't
- 2:06:28Speaker 3: too much to ask for. No, all we wanted was
- 2:06:30Speaker 3: a receiver, sodside. Yeah, and I'm excited. Take your guards.
- 2:06:34Speaker 3: You got your guards. I got my receivers. We can
- 2:06:36Speaker 3: all be happy. You still got four picks.
- 2:06:38Speaker 6: Left, all right, they're still time to turn out a week.
- 2:06:40Speaker 6: We ended the show on a high note. The Patriots
- 2:06:43Speaker 6: have another pick coming up in a few picks there
- 2:06:46Speaker 6: number fifteen one ninety two overall, and obviously picks after that,
- 2:06:50Speaker 6: so Patriots dot Com will keep you informed of all
