- 0:00Hi everybody, welcome to another brand new episode of Did That
- 0:03Age Well? The continuation of the Sex and
- 0:07the City discussion with the Cameron Show.
- 0:10I am here with my dear friend Cameron Tyler.
- 0:14Welcome to Did That Age Well? Thank you, fellow Leo.
- 0:18And before you watch this, pause that video.
- 0:22Pause that episode of your podcast on Apple Podcast where
- 0:26you should write a review, or Spotify where you should write a
- 0:29comment. Hit pause right now.
- 0:31Go to the link in my description to listen to or watch the
- 0:36episode that Cameron and I did on the first Sex in the City
- 0:39movie, because today we're discussing the second Sex in the
- 0:43City movie. Maybe the worst thing to ever
- 0:47happen to Sex in the City, only second to Che Diaz.
- 0:52Who? I haven't, I haven't even
- 0:54watched and just like that. And I know that Che was even
- 0:58worse than the four girls going to wear Abu Dhabi.
- 1:03Abu Dhabi Doo. My God.
- 1:05That's a real line from the movie.
- 1:07That is a real line that that Miranda shouts out a window at
- 1:11the airport. White Lady screams out a car
- 1:13window. Yeah.
- 1:15And she's so satisfied with herself when she does it.
- 1:17She's smiling. It comes to her like Abu Dhabi
- 1:21do. Is there so much to see?
- 1:24So there's a lot to do in Abu Dhabi.
- 1:27You could say Abu Dhabi do and it's all bad.
- 1:32So today we're going to be talking about how Sex and the
- 1:35City two age. So stick around and and strap in
- 1:41babes because. That's another piece of vocab I
- 1:46learned from. I think that means yes, right
- 1:48Hanji? I think so.
- 1:50Yeah, Hanji. It's either yes or Thank you.
- 1:53No, thank you was Oh fuck. Now I can't.
- 1:58Remember, I'll have to brush up on my air band.
- 2:00OK so if Miranda was not still alive as a character I would say
- 2:05RIP Miranda. You would have loved Duolingo.
- 2:09Oh God. You know, because she's reading
- 2:11the books, she's learning the language.
- 2:14She is. She would have had a Duolingo
- 2:16streak like he wouldn't believe. I'm in my mind she's playing it.
- 2:20Good. So, Cameron, tell me about your
- 2:25history with Sex and the City to the movie.
- 2:29Sex and the City 2. I went to go see this in an
- 2:32early screening because I won tickets via Out Front Colorado,
- 2:37the gays taking care of the gays.
- 2:38I went by myself because nobody would watch me or watch it with
- 2:42me and also no one would watch me watch the movie, which is
- 2:45really what I wanted. Yeah, because I'm a Leo, but
- 2:49nobody wanted to go to this movie.
- 2:51And when I walked out of this movie, even though this is
- 2:54widely known as the worst part of the Sex and the City universe
- 2:58is the second movie, I thought it was amazing and brilliant and
- 3:03perfect. And so I literally went on
- 3:05Facebook and was like, I cannot wait for you all to see this
- 3:07movie when it comes out for the general public.
- 3:09But I went early because I'm better than you.
- 3:12And like when you can see it y'all to tell me what you think.
- 3:16And to my surprise, no one thought very highly of it but
- 3:20me. And just like that, you were
- 3:22wrong. Oh, OK.
- 3:24One thing that doesn't age well is that I forgot to give a shout
- 3:27out to the sponsor of this episode when I first opened.
- 3:31Oh my God, do it right now. Oh my gosh, spider moving
- 3:33company. Thank you so much for
- 3:35sponsoring. Did that age well a podcast with
- 3:38dude IDKI. Am so sorry that I forgot to
- 3:42give you a shout out in the first minute of this podcast,
- 3:45but I want to say thank you so much for all that you do the
- 3:50moving cross country, locally, residential, commercial, full
- 3:55service, whatever I need, whatever you need listener.
- 3:59So if you want to get a free quote from spider, that's spider
- 4:02with AY go to spidermoving.com and you can follow them on
- 4:07Instagram as well. I'll put the link in the show
- 4:09notes. Thanks again for sponsoring this
- 4:11episode, and I think that this episode ages a lot better now
- 4:17that we've pay the bills. Yeah, Molly, Abu Dhabi, do your
- 4:22sponsorship. Read out.
- 4:25Damn, I've always said that. And you've always said that.
- 4:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:31So let's pick up where we just left off, which is you learning
- 4:35that you were the only one that liked this movie when it came
- 4:39out. Crazy.
- 4:41And so has anyone like, I mean, when, when other people saw
- 4:48this, were you aware at that time that other people didn't
- 4:52like it? Or was it not until later when
- 4:55you went back and watched this, that you said, oh, actually this
- 4:58is bad? I knew right away people didn't
- 5:01like it. I was like, I don't get it why
- 5:04you feel that way. But like as soon as the movie
- 5:07came out, the reviews were not good.
- 5:10Bad from the beginning. Yeah, On Michael Patrick King's
- 5:14Writers Room podcast Friend Just Like That, there was an episode
- 5:17where he talked about when the second movie came out and how,
- 5:20like, they were doing a press tour in Asia.
- 5:23And he was so stunned that people hated this movie so much
- 5:27and that the reviews were so bad, not just in the US but all
- 5:30over the world, that he, like, had to go to, like, a Japanese
- 5:34Zen garden with Sarah Jessica Parker and, like, cry about it.
- 5:37Oh my God. Like, the reviews were so bad.
- 5:39But at the time, I was just like you guys.
- 5:43We just spent 2 1/2 hours with Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones,
- 5:46Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbs.
- 5:48Why are we complaining? Yeah.
- 5:50And now in my older age, I can say, OK, I kind of I can.
- 5:56I still love it, but I can see why it is the one of the worst
- 5:59movies. Yeah, maybe ever.
- 6:02One of the certainly one of the worst sequels ever.
- 6:06Yeah, for sure. Probably the worst TV to movie
- 6:11transition. Pretty bad.
- 6:13So pretty bad. Now, there's a lot of, there's a
- 6:17lot that makes this movie bad, but I'm going to start with just
- 6:20kind of an overall summary of the plot.
- 6:23Perfect. So so we start at a gay wedding
- 6:28and then. But it's not a gay wedding.
- 6:31It's Stanford's wedding. It's Stanford's wedding, of
- 6:35course, Big's first gay wedding. No surprise there.
- 6:38No. And the girls decide to go to
- 6:44Abu Dhabi because Samantha, oops, sorry, to kick the
- 6:48microphone. Samantha has a client.
- 6:52The. I don't know.
- 6:54The Sheik Shake, that's all I remember.
- 6:56That's what she calls him. He has a name but I always
- 6:58remember him being called the Sheik Shake.
- 7:00There is. If you're a brown person in this
- 7:02movie, you do not have a memorable name.
- 7:05Except for Abdul, Like Paula. OK, Yeah, we'll get there.
- 7:09So true. We'll get there.
- 7:11The only good part of this movie is Abdul.
- 7:13Like Paula. Yeah, Oh my God, the honestly
- 7:17the only like, full character. Oh my God.
- 7:20Well, we'll get there. Yeah.
- 7:21Keep going, Keep going. So Samantha is doing PR for the
- 7:26UAE kind of as a whole it seems, which it's shocking that this
- 7:32movie wasn't bankrolled by UAE because it is basically an
- 7:38advertorial for Abu Dhabi. Until the end.
- 7:43Until the end. Yeah, which is probably why they
- 7:45didn't fund it. Yeah, well, they did not even
- 7:49cosign it. They said you cannot film here.
- 7:51They filmed it in Morocco. Oh, that's right, yeah.
- 7:54Yeah, and I did look it up after it did not screen in the UAE.
- 7:59OK, yeah, 'cause when Molly and I were watching, I was like, I
- 8:02wonder if they were even allowed to play this in Abu Dhabi 'cause
- 8:05they do end up being shown in not a great light.
- 8:08Not great. I mean everyone, everyone comes
- 8:11off bad by the end. There are no heroes except for
- 8:15Abdul like Paula. So the girls go to, it's
- 8:19basically girls trip and they go to experience the culture.
- 8:26They go to stay in a $20,000 a night hotel room.
- 8:32They run into Aiden. They they buy shoes at the
- 8:37market. You know, honestly, they go,
- 8:39they do karaoke. Not that much happens, but
- 8:43somehow they managed to make a movie where nothing happens feel
- 8:48shockingly offensive. There are some offensive things
- 8:56in this movie, yeah. Would you say that that's kind
- 9:00of a, a, a summary of the of the plot?
- 9:04I mean, Samantha gets in trouble because she's a whore.
- 9:08Yeah. I mean, ultimately, it's kind of
- 9:11like in the first movie, they all have their own storylines.
- 9:15But like we discussed in my episode, Charlotte's storyline
- 9:20very reductive, in my opinion. Charlotte's storyline throughout
- 9:24this movie is she has a nanny to help take care of her kids who
- 9:28are driving her crazy, but she doesn't want to admit that her
- 9:30kids are driving her crazy because she wanted kids so bad
- 9:33and now they're crazy. Lily ruins a Valentino vintage
- 9:36skirt. Yeah, traumatizing.
- 9:38That is the most traumatizing thing in the movie Which.
- 9:41The most offensive thing in the movie, frankly.
- 9:43Honestly, yeah. It's like a beautiful cream
- 9:46Valentino. Lily puts her red paint her
- 9:49little hands on it, right on the butt.
- 9:52And Kristin Davis on her podcast talks about how that was a real
- 9:55Valentino skirt. They had a ruin for that scene,
- 9:57but she still has it. Wow.
- 9:59I know. So anyway, that was reductive.
- 10:01It turns out at the end of this movie, the nanny's a lesbian.
- 10:04And so. Oh, I didn't have to worry about
- 10:06it. Anyway.
- 10:07Actually, she didn't have to worry about it because Harry
- 10:09wouldn't cheat on her. Yeah.
- 10:11So the whole thing is kind of dumb because the whole time
- 10:13she's like, Oh my God, my nanny's hot and I have a
- 10:16husband. Right.
- 10:18And The thing is like, yeah, Harry's going to oogle at her
- 10:22her boobies, whether she's a lesbian or not.
- 10:25I ogled at her boobies. She didn't wear a bra.
- 10:27She was. She was bouncing up and down.
- 10:30I mean, how could you look anywhere else?
- 10:32Yeah, anyway. So yeah, that was reductive.
- 10:36Once again, we find Miranda complaining about work.
- 10:40But the nice thing is at the beginning of the movie, she
- 10:42quits her job. So she actually becomes super
- 10:46happy. And like, I'm gonna learn Arabic
- 10:48while we're on this trip to Abu Dhabi.
- 10:50I'm gonna be supportive of Charlotte.
- 10:52She's actually quite enjoyable during this and maybe a little
- 10:55too happy. Yeah.
- 10:58So she. And other than that, Miranda
- 11:00doesn't really have a storyline. Like even her conclusion at the
- 11:03end is like, well at my old job my boss was mean to me so now I
- 11:08found a new job where people are nice to me.
- 11:11That's Miranda's literal storyline.
- 11:13That's the whole thing being cringe in Abu Dhabi, which, to
- 11:16be fair, all of them are. She's the one who tries.
- 11:20She does in her Gen. X feminist way of being.
- 11:23Like I'm going to learn a few words in Arabic and I'm going to
- 11:26learn about the culture. And I will say her being a
- 11:29cringe Gen. Xer translates very well into
- 11:32and just like that if anyone watched the show.
- 11:34And just like that, the whole thing starts for Miranda.
- 11:38And then just like that, with her going back to school and
- 11:40putting her foot in her mouth by saying a bunch of offensive
- 11:43things accidentally, like, I won't even go there.
- 11:48But it it it translates well. But unfortunately, it is her
- 11:51only storyline. So if you're a Miranda Stan, you
- 11:54probably did not love this movie.
- 11:56Or maybe you loved that they painted her in a fun light.
- 12:01That's true. It is one of the only time she
- 12:03has fun. That is so true.
- 12:05Like ever. They had to fly for a day to go
- 12:09to a place where Miranda could have fun.
- 12:12Yeah, Miranda will never have fun in New York, and that stays
- 12:16true. That's honestly so.
- 12:18They were so real for that. They honestly were.
- 12:20And then Samantha's storyline is that she is, well, obviously she
- 12:26is doing PR to make Abu Dhabi more a more desirable travelling
- 12:32vacation destination. But also her storyline is that
- 12:36in the US she's doing a bunch of hormones because she's like,
- 12:40I've discovered the secret to staying young thanks to Suzanne
- 12:43Somers. So she's like, Oh my God, I'm on
- 12:46estrogen, a touch of testosterone and this vitamin,
- 12:49this whatever. Because she's menopausal.
- 12:51Yeah, she goes to Abu Dhabi and she's not allowed to have her
- 12:55supplement, which is a huge problem for her.
- 12:59And also, this means that she doesn't really feel very sexual,
- 13:04so she doesn't feel like she's herself.
- 13:05She feels like she's lost her sense of self.
- 13:08But then riding across the sand dunes on his ATV is Ricard Spurt
- 13:16AKA Richard AKA Dick, meaning his name is Dick Spurt and she
- 13:22has to point that out. He's so fucking hot.
- 13:25It's stupid how hot he is. He's one of the hottest men I've
- 13:28ever seen in my life. And he's also Dutch.
- 13:31He is? Yeah, he is from another white
- 13:35people country. Yeah, thus his name.
- 13:37Ricard. Yeah.
- 13:38Anyway, then she finally does start feeling herself again, and
- 13:43then she has sex with him and gets in trouble and they get
- 13:45kicked out of Abu Dhabi. So that's a pretty important
- 13:47part of the plot. Yeah.
- 13:49But, you know, the crown jewel of this movie was the return of
- 13:53Aiden for Carrie. Of course, Carrie in the
- 13:56beginning of this movie is having all this trouble with Mr.
- 14:00Big because she says the sparkle's gone from our
- 14:03marriage. They've been married for two
- 14:04years. Two years.
- 14:05And we have to have a full discussion about this, by the
- 14:07way. Yes, I'm so sorry to hijack
- 14:09this, I feel like I'm hijacking. Right now, why would I invite
- 14:12you on the podcast if I didn't want you to do most of the work?
- 14:15Okay, great, because I'm like, I realize I'm telling you what we
- 14:19have to talk about. No, of course This is why do you
- 14:22think I would invite you if I wanted a she knows if person.
- 14:26She knows what she asked for. OK, I actually have to tell you
- 14:29something really quick. OK, Please.
- 14:30OK, so my friend Annie, shout out Annie J Cox, friend of the
- 14:33pod. She told me the story that I
- 14:36think is probably like a parable across many religions and
- 14:40cultures, but for her was a part of her Mormon upbringing where
- 14:44there's this man who is about to go hike up a mountain and
- 14:48there's a snake that he meets at the at the base of the mountain.
- 14:51And the snake says, hey, will you carry me up the mountain?
- 14:54And he's like, no, you're going to bite me.
- 14:56And the snake is like, I promise I won't bite you.
- 14:59So he hikes up the mountain. They get to the top.
- 15:02He sets down the snake. The snake bites him.
- 15:04And he says, why did you bite me?
- 15:06You told me you weren't going to.
- 15:08And he said you knew who I was when you picked me up.
- 15:12Oh my God. And I knew who you were when I
- 15:16picked you up. That's so true.
- 15:18OK, great. Then I'm going to go down this
- 15:20rabbit hole and I'm taking you with me.
- 15:22The snake in this movie is Carrie Bradshaw.
- 15:25And Mr. Big knew who he married. OK, so she's upset in the
- 15:30beginning of this movie because Mr. Big wants to go home and
- 15:34relax. This man is in his 50s, by the
- 15:36way. I think he's very justified.
- 15:38He wants to get some take out at the end of the day.
- 15:40He's working the stock market all day.
- 15:41He's so fucking stressed out. He wants to come home.
- 15:44She's like, I'm excuse me, It's a Monday night, we have a movie
- 15:48premiere to go to. We need to have sparkle in our
- 15:50marriage. She ends up going to her old
- 15:55apartment to have a couple days to write and she realizes that
- 16:00after having a couple days apart, this has introduced some
- 16:04sparkle back into their marriage.
- 16:05So before she and the girls go on this trip to Abu Dhabi, this
- 16:08is very important. She and Big have a conversation
- 16:12and Mr. Big goes, hey, remember how you liked having those two
- 16:16days at your old apartment? And like when we re converged,
- 16:21there was sparkle like you wanted.
- 16:23What if we just do that every week, two nights a week?
- 16:27And she's like, you want two nights a week off from our
- 16:29marriage? And he's like, I'm just saying
- 16:31like do what we did last time. And she's like, but that's not
- 16:34how marriage works. This is the theme of the movie.
- 16:37And he goes, I thought you said we were supposed to make our own
- 16:40rules. That's.
- 16:41So true. Now let's talk about this
- 16:43because I think this is really, if they had done this better, it
- 16:49was kind of like a missed opportunity because I actually
- 16:51think this is a great conversation.
- 16:52You and I watched this movie together and we agreed this
- 16:56would actually be amazing. This is after I saw this, it
- 17:00changed my brain chemistry. I said, oh, maybe one day I will
- 17:03get married. Because if I can design it so
- 17:06that I have two nights to myself, if I can have another
- 17:10apartment where I go just to, like, hang out and write and,
- 17:13like, do whatever. Yeah, That sounds incredible.
- 17:16That sounds perfect. And if you are so privileged
- 17:20that you and your partner have a home and you have this vacant
- 17:24apartment, by the way, we did have to chuckle at that.
- 17:27She's in New York City and she just has a vacant apartment at
- 17:30her disposal. But if that's if that were your
- 17:33situation and maybe you know what, if you're married, leave
- 17:37us a comment and tell us what you think about this.
- 17:39But I would suspect if I were married and in this financial
- 17:43situation, I would also be like, wow, yeah, let's have two nights
- 17:48a week. And he describes it as like, you
- 17:52can go do your writing for two nights.
- 17:55And I can do. I can, he says.
- 17:57I can watch sports or I can watch TV and do all the things
- 18:00that annoy you. Totally.
- 18:02And he's like, you can go out with the girls.
- 18:04Yeah, exactly. You can go like, do the things
- 18:06that you like doing without me. And it's like, I think that that
- 18:10makes so much sense because it reserves time in the week for
- 18:14her to do those things so that she doesn't say, you know what,
- 18:17I'm mad at you now, so I'm going to go out with the girls as a
- 18:20punishment. Exactly.
- 18:21It just is naturally interwoven in the relationship.
- 18:26I thought it was ground breaking.
- 18:29I, If I were married, I, no, I wouldn't mind having two days
- 18:33off because you know what distance makes the heart grow
- 18:35fonder. So true.
- 18:37So they have this conversation and then she and the girls fly
- 18:40to Abu Dhabi. And you have to remember,
- 18:42meanwhile, Charlotte is feeling very insecure about her marriage
- 18:46because she's feeling insecure about what kind of mother she is
- 18:50and this nanny and like, she's not enough.
- 18:53And so it kind of creates some tension between Carrie and
- 18:58Charlotte. Now what happens at the
- 19:01marketplace in Abu Dhabi, Mali? OK.
- 19:04So in the marketplace in Abu Dhabi, she sees Aiden, This sees
- 19:10Aiden. Shaw.
- 19:11The laziest way to incorporate a story about It's like fanservice
- 19:17of bringing Aiden back. Why the fuck would Carrie run
- 19:21into Aiden in Abu Dhabi? Molly, that's literally the
- 19:24point is that it's a sign. It's.
- 19:27Like. No, are you kidding?
- 19:29Wait, we have not had this discussion.
- 19:31No, I wanted to have it on the pause.
- 19:32I know you're blindsiding me right now.
- 19:34I can't believe you're doing this to me.
- 19:36I wanted an honest reaction from you.
- 19:38I this is my honest reaction. You're full of shit because her
- 19:44running into Aiden in Abu Dhabi at a marketplace is magical.
- 19:51It was movie magic. I'll tell you this.
- 19:53I remember the moment it happened in the theater and
- 19:56everyone else who was there for that early screening was
- 19:59probably as delulu as me and being like, this is the best
- 20:02movie ever, everyone. I I cheered too.
- 20:05If you remember, I was so happy to see Aiden 'cause I'm an Aiden
- 20:11apologist. How is it lazy?
- 20:14I think that it's lazy because it's like, it's so unrealistic.
- 20:19Even in this world where I am willing to suspend disbelief a
- 20:23little bit. It just was so like, OK, well,
- 20:26how can we complicate her marriage?
- 20:29Oh, she's going to run into Aiden.
- 20:30Where is she going to run into Aiden?
- 20:32Well, the movie takes place in Abu Dhabi, so I guess he has to
- 20:35be there. He does furniture.
- 20:38He's looking at textiles in the Middle East.
- 20:41He's looking at rugs to sell with his furniture, he says,
- 20:44which I'm like, OK, Yeah, Yeah. Also, he's married to Kathy.
- 20:49And because I am so knowledgeable, I will tell you
- 20:51his wife Kathy, sells textiles. Oh, so it's like part of their
- 20:55life is textiles. And he's doing business with
- 21:00some rug makers. Yeah, it makes sense to me.
- 21:03I don't think it's that outlandish.
- 21:06I don't think it's lazy. I think it's movie magic.
- 21:09And he asked Carrie to go to dinner with him, and she accepts
- 21:13the invitation. Charlotte is like Carrie.
- 21:15Oh, my God. You're playing with fire.
- 21:17Yeah. And Carrie goes just because
- 21:20you're insecure about your marriage, everyone's going to
- 21:22cheat. Well, what ends up happening?
- 21:25Well, girl, I mean, Carrie is. Carrie was so rotted for that.
- 21:29She was so rotted for that, for projecting her insecurities onto
- 21:34Charlotte, being so mean. OK, Charlotte was being really
- 21:37annoying though. Well, Charlotte was being
- 21:39annoying, but Charlotte was fucking right.
- 21:42Kind of. So let's talk about this now.
- 21:45So Carrie goes to dinner with Aiden, and at this dinner where
- 21:50they have the best Maha Maha or whatever the hell it's called, I
- 21:54probably butchered that. She and Aiden end the night by
- 22:00sharing a kiss. No one, no, neither of them is
- 22:03completely his fault. It was very mutual, but it was
- 22:06just a kiss. Is that cheating?
- 22:11Yeah, it's, well, it's certainly something to certainly something
- 22:16to be aware of if I would be upset if my partner kissed an ex
- 22:25in Abu Dhabi. In Abu Dhabi, though.
- 22:28On or honestly really anywhere but.
- 22:30No, I get it. I.
- 22:31Think it's because they have history.
- 22:33Again, that doesn't make a difference.
- 22:34If it was a Steve situation. That's what I was going to.
- 22:36Say that's the thing, I would be more OK with my partner having a
- 22:42one night stand with someone who they like don't know than my
- 22:45partner kissing their ex in. Really.
- 22:50And it was just a kiss. They didn't even sleep together.
- 22:53Yeah, I would be like, well, because they have history
- 22:56together. This is someone who she has that
- 22:58does. Make it way more intimate.
- 22:59It makes it more intimate. The emotional part of it, I
- 23:02think, is what I would have. And kissing can totally be more
- 23:05intimate than sex. Absolutely.
- 23:07That's true. OK.
- 23:08I do. I do think that it is worse than
- 23:10Steve's affair in the first movie.
- 23:12Yeah. I do also think, though.
- 23:15So Carrie runs back to the hotel.
- 23:18She makes everything about herself and goes I need
- 23:21everybody. Charlotte and Miranda are in the
- 23:24middle of having a heart to heart about being mothers.
- 23:27Samantha's in the bath getting ready for her date with Dick
- 23:30spurt and Carrie's just like stop what you're doing everyone.
- 23:34I kissed Aiden what should I do what should I do?
- 23:37She's begging for advice. Samantha gives her the advice
- 23:40that she asks for and goes Don't tell him it was just a kiss and
- 23:44it's not going to happen again. What's the point of telling him?
- 23:47Carrie immediately goes I'm. Titling him, girl.
- 23:51Why did you make everyone stop what they were doing when you
- 23:53knew that you weren't going to listen to their advice?
- 23:55Why? And why are you going to tell
- 23:57him? And I think just like when
- 24:00Miranda told Carrie what she had said to beg the night before
- 24:05their wedding, when she said you guys are crazy to get married, I
- 24:09thought that Carrie was only telling Big because she wanted
- 24:13to feel better. It wasn't because she actually
- 24:16wanted to mend something in their marriage.
- 24:18She felt so guilty that she could not sleep that night and
- 24:22she had to tell Big because she had to get it off her chest so
- 24:26that she could move on. I also thought that she should
- 24:29just go ahead and take it to her grave because she said that's
- 24:31like never going to happen again.
- 24:33I don't love Aiden like. Yeah, and also, not only did
- 24:37Samantha tell her not to say anything, but Miranda, who had
- 24:41the experience of Steve cheating on her with the one night stand
- 24:44and then telling her about it, said, you know, now that I know
- 24:47Steve did it one time with someone and it didn't mean
- 24:50anything, was it really better that he told me?
- 24:53Right. So Carrie should have just,
- 24:54like, really taken that if it was really never going to happen
- 24:58again. And it didn't.
- 24:59It didn't. She didn't see Aiden again until
- 25:02like, a year after Big died. Yeah, which you know about Aiden
- 25:06storyline and and just like that.
- 25:07Yeah. OK.
- 25:08So yeah, like he did come back after Big died, but it didn't
- 25:12happen again. So like, why did she have to
- 25:14tell him that? It just made him very upset.
- 25:18And also she should have wait if she was going to tell him, she
- 25:22should have waited until she got back rather than telling him on
- 25:25the phone in the middle of the work day.
- 25:27Yeah, by the way, he's at work because one in the morning in
- 25:29Abu Dhabi is during the work day for Mr. Bitt and she truly, I do
- 25:33not think that she even thought of that.
- 25:35It would be like Kerry to think of that and do it anyway.
- 25:38But I literally think that she is so self-centered that she
- 25:41didn't even think, oh, I wonder what time it is in the US, in
- 25:44New York. No.
- 25:46And that is very Carrie. Yeah, which I don't hate her for
- 25:49that. OK, so.
- 25:52The eye roll. OK, so let's go back to the
- 25:58beginning of this film. Is that?
- 25:59OK, to the game, to the gay wedding.
- 26:01Yeah, so it's wild that this movie was before marriage
- 26:06equality and the boys had to go to Connecticut to get married.
- 26:10Yeah, 'cause it wasn't even legal in New York yet.
- 26:12Yeah, to think this movie, despite the fact that it ages
- 26:16horribly, it was born bad and it wasn't that long ago.
- 26:19This is a contemporary movie. No, it's movie is 15 years old.
- 26:22Yeah, and the fact that they weren't allowed to get married
- 26:26in New York? Wild it.
- 26:28Is absolutely wild. So Carrie dresses in a suit for
- 26:33their wedding and it's this whole thing.
- 26:36I feel like it's so like her being a performative Gen.
- 26:41X feminist, being like, I'm so progressive because I'm wearing
- 26:44this like hot pantsuit too. It is, and also like in Carrie
- 26:51Bradshaw fashion, she has to get this very unique headpiece that
- 26:56had to be delivered to the wedding venue.
- 26:59And she says the suit is Dior, but the hat is Carrie Bradshaw.
- 27:06Something like that. And the headpiece is horrific.
- 27:10It makes her look like a knock off Disney villain.
- 27:13Not even like in Disney villain, just a knock off villain.
- 27:16Yeah, like on PBS or something. No shade to PBSI.
- 27:20Love you but like your villains are not very comfy.
- 27:23No, not at. All it wasn't good.
- 27:26Her outfit. I mean.
- 27:27Honestly though, Stanford's outfit wasn't great.
- 27:30I agree. So it's almost like wearing
- 27:32something ugly is paying homage to Stanford because I hate his
- 27:35clothes all the time. Oh yeah, he is not.
- 27:38I mean, yeah, they don't. They do him pretty dirty I would
- 27:41say. Oh yeah.
- 27:42Fashion wise and somebody says here come the gays.
- 27:49I can't remember who said that. Probably Charlotte and the the
- 27:56men in this movie, one of them says, OK, OK, so I'm sorry, I'm
- 28:04getting, I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 28:06It's easy to do when you're talking about the sweating
- 28:08because it's crazy. It is crazy.
- 28:10So we have basically like the entire San Francisco Gay Men's
- 28:13Chorus up there with top hats. They've got, they've got Swans,
- 28:17they've got everything. They've got Liza fucking
- 28:20Minnelli. Liza Minnelli did a cameo in
- 28:24this movie. That is honestly one of the
- 28:27things that you have to admit is redeeming about this movie
- 28:31because it is an iconic appearance in which she, for
- 28:34some reason, has chosen to perform a rendition of Single
- 28:39Ladies. Yeah at Stanford and Anthony's
- 28:42wedding. Yeah, the song is crazy.
- 28:45Who are neither single nor ladies.
- 28:48Yeah, exactly. And and Miranda even makes a
- 28:52joke like, oh, now we know why people get married so they don't
- 28:54have to dance to this song at weddings anymore.
- 28:58Liza. Oh, and she's also the officiant
- 29:00of the wedding. Liza Minnelli also officiates
- 29:03this wedding, and she is just amazing in this role, even
- 29:09though at the time, let's see, this movie was filmed in 2009,
- 29:14Liza Minnelli was born, and I want to say 1945.
- 29:18Yeah. So she was about 64.
- 29:23Yeah, mid 60s. And she does the choreography
- 29:27for Single Ladies and she gives a very spirited performance.
- 29:31And also I believe her rendition of Single Ladies is on
- 29:34streaming. You can listen to it.
- 29:36Absolutely. And honestly like watch the 1st
- 29:3915 minutes of this film for Eliza.
- 29:43Yeah, I think that if if you can do it.
- 29:47You can talk a lot of shit about Sex and the City too, but it's
- 29:50the only piece of the Sex and the City universe in which Judy
- 29:54Garland, or a descendant of Judy Garland makes an appearance.
- 29:58Other than when Carrie is watching Meet Me in Saint Louis,
- 30:02but she's watching the trolley song and she turns it off
- 30:05halfway through. Yeah, this is the only time we
- 30:08see someone show up with Judy Garland's jeans.
- 30:12Incredible. And perform.
- 30:13So. So watch it for that.
- 30:15It is the gayest. I mean, I think someone refers
- 30:18to Stanford and Anthony's wedding as it's like looking
- 30:21into the sun. Yeah.
- 30:23Which is how I want people to talk about me.
- 30:26Anytime. Anytime it's like looking into
- 30:28the sun. The Cameron Show, it's like
- 30:30looking into the sun. Oh.
- 30:31That's my tagline for Season 3. Absolutely a huge shout out to
- 30:37sponsor of Dude IDK spider moving and storage.
- 30:40I recently used them to move into my new place and couldn't
- 30:44be happier with how efficient they were.
- 30:47They were so kind, they made it look so easy, and it was just
- 30:50top notch experience. So definitely recommend that you
- 30:53check them out if you've got a move coming up.
- 30:55Residential, commercial, local, cross country, anything in
- 30:59between. You can get a free quote at
- 31:01spidermoving.com and you can give him a follow on social
- 31:05media at Spider Moving and Storage.
- 31:09So Stanford gets the wedding of his dreams and Anthony gets to
- 31:13cheat and they say because you're gay.
- 31:15And he says no because I'm Italian and I loved that.
- 31:18I loved that too. I think like, I think it's very
- 31:23true to their relationship. Yeah.
- 31:26And Anthony is like an old school gay.
- 31:28I do just like I'm this is one way.
- 31:32I'm like, am I a closeted fucking Republican?
- 31:36I hate the trope of gays relationships having to be open
- 31:41relationships. I feel like it's so true in real
- 31:44life, which is also the annoying part.
- 31:46I don't. Know.
- 31:47Of why I'm borderline homophobic at this point where I'm just
- 31:49like these fucking gays. And that's probably a vapid take
- 31:53on my part, but I think it's and I'm all about do whatever you
- 31:56want to do. I just think it's annoying.
- 31:59I just think it's annoying just like it's I am a Charlotte.
- 32:05This is my Charlotte moon coming out.
- 32:07It is. I'm like, I'm sorry, if you have
- 32:09an open relationship, is it really a marriage?
- 32:13I know, I know, I know and I logically don't believe that.
- 32:18But in my Charlotte Moon soul. In your soul, your deepest.
- 32:22Self it cheapens their marriage to me.
- 32:23I'm gonna Yeah, I'm gonna say it.
- 32:26It does cheapen their marriage to me.
- 32:29And that's my hot take. I'm so sorry.
- 32:31Some of you will agree with me, and some of you will think that
- 32:34I'm the worst backwards person for saying that.
- 32:39Probably someone will accuse me of like, going down Republican
- 32:43lane here, but it did make me take Anthony and Stanford's
- 32:49marriage a little less seriously.
- 32:51Wow. But you know what?
- 32:52That's a quality because you're holding their marriage to the
- 32:55same standard as straight people.
- 32:58Actually, would you what? First, if someone was in a
- 33:00hetero relationship and they had an open marriage, would you be
- 33:03less annoyed? Equally annoyed.
- 33:06Equally annoyed? OK, but I am a Charlotte in this
- 33:09way. Again, I want to be very clear
- 33:11that logically and my on the record stances, this isn't the
- 33:16politician in me coming out. You have the right to do
- 33:19whatever you want to do. Said you.
- 33:21And I support that right? Also, personally, it's a little
- 33:27less legit to me. I'm sorry.
- 33:29It is sorry to all my Poly friends, but wow.
- 33:34The Poly cool is coming after. Let me just say it's not for me.
- 33:38Love it if it's for you. And and then here's the thing, I
- 33:41love Anthony. Anthony is one of my favorite
- 33:44characters ever created. What?
- 33:46He's a bitchy Italian gay and he's best friends with Charlotte
- 33:49York. He ends up with a bread company
- 33:52and then just like that called Hot Fellas.
- 33:56That's so funny. And he ends up married to a very
- 34:00hot young Italian man named Giuseppe with a huge loaf.
- 34:07With a huge Italian sausage. Oh, my God.
- 34:10And he's beautiful. So he gets, he has a great arc.
- 34:14Yeah, but I don't like that. I don't like that part.
- 34:19I kind of thought that it was like in jest, you know?
- 34:23I didn't think like he's actually going to cheat.
- 34:25Okay, well there's the Charlotte in you, because right after they
- 34:28talk about this, the group has a little conversation and
- 34:31Charlotte goes, well, he doesn't say he's going to cheat, he just
- 34:35says he can cheat. And I'm like, yeah, he's
- 34:40cheating. They're gay.
- 34:41He's cheating and then Stanford goes well he's only allowed to
- 34:45cheat in the 46 states were not legally married.
- 34:48And I laughed out loud. I thought that was so funny.
- 34:50That was a sign of the times. It was 2009 slash 10.
- 34:55Crazy. OK, so at the wedding, people
- 35:02start inquiring about whether Carrie and Big are going to have
- 35:07kids. And people say, oh, so it's just
- 35:10going to be you 2. And they were so real for that,
- 35:15for setting that up. She's like, yeah, it's not like
- 35:17that feeling of being asked why you're not having kids.
- 35:22I think they really, they really did that for the girls when they
- 35:27wrote that, they said we need, we need to give a little shout
- 35:32out to every person who has been asked this question.
- 35:35I do agree with that. I'm glad it happened.
- 35:37I will say the woman who asked it gave a terrible performance.
- 35:40Oh, I absolutely agree. And she's like a Broadway star.
- 35:42I don't even remember her name. She said I need to be on the
- 35:45stage. And she should take it to the
- 35:47stage 'cause it wasn't good in the movie.
- 35:49No, it was not OK. So then we have the introduction
- 35:56to the Irish braless nanny. Yeah, I don't even remember her
- 36:03name. There's a wet T-shirt contest
- 36:05with the baby Aaron. I think her name's Aaron.
- 36:07I think her name's Aaron. Aaron.
- 36:09Aaron. I mean, we already talked about
- 36:14that. It's really not that important.
- 36:17But I love her, for the record. Oh yeah, of course she does
- 36:19nothing wrong. She's super helpful.
- 36:21She is so good at her job. When Charlotte does get her
- 36:26Valentino skirt ruined and I have to bring it up more than
- 36:29once, of course it, I mean, it hurts me to this day to watch
- 36:32that scene. Charlotte goes in the pantry and
- 36:35starts crying and then there's like jiggling on the door handle
- 36:38and you think the kids are trying to get in, but it's
- 36:39really Aaron coming to save her and take the kids away so she
- 36:42can decompress. So I love Aaron.
- 36:46Aaron is great. Aaron, a consummate
- 36:49professional. Aaron is a classic example of
- 36:51like, the girl you never needed to hate, and that's your own
- 36:55internalized misogyny. Totally.
- 36:57And Charlotte does say later that when she realized that she
- 37:02had the hot nanny who didn't wear a bra and that, you know,
- 37:07and that maybe people would be looking, that she was like, Oh
- 37:11my God, I don't want to lose my nanny.
- 37:12Yeah, she goes. When I thought about Harry
- 37:15leaving me, all I could think is I can't lose the nanny.
- 37:19So she loves Erin. She does love her, despite her
- 37:22insecurities. I think deep down she does love
- 37:24her. She does.
- 37:25Now we really got to get into the meat of it.
- 37:28The girls are at, they're at lunch and Samantha's like, look,
- 37:34the girls we got to go to Abu Dhabi and, and everyone's like,
- 37:41and she says I go to children's birthday parties for you.
- 37:45You can go to Abu Dhabi for me. Infamous in my heart.
- 37:49And I want to say that to any of my friends who have kids, when I
- 37:54ask you to do something, remember that I go to children's
- 37:59birthday parties, I go to baby showers, I go to weddings.
- 38:02You can you can cough up a few bucks to come hang out with me
- 38:08in Denver without your kids. Feel that on a spiritual level
- 38:13it is the representation that I admire in this movie.
- 38:17And I will say yeah, it goes both ways.
- 38:20Because if I do go to your kids birthday parties, which I've
- 38:25gone to a lot, Yeah. And actually I'm getting better
- 38:28just being like, I don't wanna go to your kids birthday party.
- 38:30And I have fabulous friends who are like, of course you don't
- 38:32and that's OK. Yeah, totally.
- 38:34But yeah, if I am going to your kids birthday parties and I ask
- 38:37you to go to dinner with me every once in a while, Yeah, go
- 38:40to the damn dinner. Absolutely.
- 38:42Let me ask you this. This is a throwback question,
- 38:44OK. In the original Sex and the City
- 38:47series, do you remember the episode where Carrie Bradshaw's
- 38:51like, I've gone to bridal showers, Bachelorette parties?
- 38:56Oh, yeah. I don't ever get to register for
- 38:59anything. Why?
- 39:00Because I'm not married and don't have kids.
- 39:02So she sets up a registry and she says I'm marrying myself.
- 39:05Yeah. As someone who did marry
- 39:07himself, I find this very admirable.
- 39:09What do you think about that? Have you ever thought about
- 39:11doing it? Oh, of course, when I turned 30,
- 39:13I thought, should I just make a registry for myself?
- 39:17I might do that for 35. I think you should because OK,
- 39:22here's what I also think. I think that, and this is very
- 39:24much like a like person of privilege thing to say, assuming
- 39:29that people in their 30s are buying a home.
- 39:31But when you get married, you get to set up a registry.
- 39:35You get all new stuff for your kitchen, for your living room,
- 39:38for everything. And The thing is that today most
- 39:42people who are getting married, they already live together.
- 39:45They already have stuff together.
- 39:47This is not the age where like you're you're going from being
- 39:52bankrolled by your dad to being bankrolled by your husband.
- 39:56You are not being transferred from one home to another.
- 40:00Unless you're lucky. Just kidding.
- 40:03That's the Republican. And that's the Republican.
- 40:05And that's the Charlotte and me again.
- 40:06Absolutely. Today.
- 40:10Now it's just like, oh, OK, so you found love, so now you get
- 40:13free stuff. I think that the tradition
- 40:17should be that when you move into your first home, either,
- 40:22you know, I was going to say it like when you buy a home, you
- 40:25should be able to set up a registry so people can buy stuff
- 40:27for you, Especially because when you buy a house, you're
- 40:30typically cash poor, you know? Yeah.
- 40:33But I think it actually should just be when you move into your
- 40:36own place, doesn't matter if you're renting or buying, when
- 40:38you move in to a place that is yours, have a house warming and
- 40:42that's when you should get the registry.
- 40:44Because let's be honest, a wedding registry is going to be
- 40:49all HomeGoods. Oh I have to say this is how I
- 40:52feel about baby showers when someone's on like their 4th kid.
- 40:56It's like pass. But I will say my friends have
- 40:58also been really great about this and now they don't call
- 41:00that a baby shower, they call it a baby sprinkle.
- 41:02Have you heard that term? You.
- 41:03Yeah. I love that.
- 41:04Yeah, where they're like, wow, this is like my third kid.
- 41:06I don't need the. Don't need the gifts.
- 41:08You honestly don't need to bring gifts.
- 41:10We're just celebrating that another kid is coming and I'm
- 41:12like that I can get behind. Absolutely.
- 41:14Now we're celebrating. Yeah.
- 41:15But I think that it's so like, it's just so backwards that the
- 41:21time in life when we get people gifts is when they get married
- 41:25because marriage is not the same like tradition and timeline in
- 41:31life that it used to be. No one.
- 41:33Also, like, honestly, as far as registries and getting gifts,
- 41:37I'm fully on board with you. It's like when people need
- 41:40stuff, that's when you should buy them gifts.
- 41:43To be clear, I have no problem celebrating the milestones in my
- 41:47friend's life. Exactly what you're saying.
- 41:50Why do we need to get gifts for this?
- 41:52We. The other thing that's changed
- 41:54in our culture is that we live in a culture of stuff now.
- 41:58Yeah. In 1940, you kind of Amazon a
- 42:01blender to your house because you need it on a Tuesday the way
- 42:03you can now. Exactly.
- 42:05Registries are dumb. It's for you marrying yourself.
- 42:10Yeah, well, exactly, exactly. And there's stuff you need.
- 42:14Yeah, that you don't feel like buying for yourself.
- 42:16I will also say, so my friends don't think I'm talking shit
- 42:19about them, they're very good at celebrating me, which you have
- 42:23to be if you're going to be my friend.
- 42:24Duh. I'm a Leo, I celebrate my
- 42:26birthday the month of July. July is birthday month, babe.
- 42:30Yeah, July is my birthday. I always say that.
- 42:33Oh, and you've always said that. Mm Hmm.
- 42:37OK, well I'm glad that we covered this.
- 42:39I am too. That's really important ground
- 42:40to cover, and I know you at home needed to hear it.
- 42:43Yeah, because you either agree with us or you never thought
- 42:46about it. Because you're privileged and
- 42:47you got married at 21 and had a baby at 23 and bought a house at
- 42:5124 and fuck you if that's you. And if that's you, stop
- 42:56listening. Yeah, if that's.
- 42:57You. You're not my friend.
- 42:59Just kidding. I love you at night.
- 43:02So the girls go to Abu Dhabi, which is framed as this very
- 43:06like modern, progressive, beautiful place.
- 43:10And let's not, you know, let's not forget the human rights
- 43:15violations, the like the wealth discrepancy, the, you know,
- 43:21there's all of these things that are really messed up in that
- 43:25area. But what's not scandalizing to
- 43:29me is like women wearing veils. And that is the most
- 43:33scandalizing thing to the four women, the most.
- 43:38The problem with Abu Dhabi is that women wear burqas and that
- 43:43is the thing that they need to save people from.
- 43:47It's not the fact that like they're staying in a $20,000 a
- 43:51night hotel room that was probably built on like
- 43:54completely exploited labor because, well, and they don't
- 43:58have rights. They literally each have their
- 44:00own servants. Who I'm sure is being paid
- 44:04basically not. They're like truly indentured
- 44:06servants. No, they are because Goro or
- 44:09whatever carries guy is called, he tells her he has to save up
- 44:14money to visit his wife in India and it takes him six months to
- 44:18save up enough to visit his wife in India from Abu Dhabi.
- 44:22And so, you know, these people are, Oh, my gosh.
- 44:24Maybe big and I can spend time apart, That's what she thinks.
- 44:28That is her take away, she. Does eventually she does leave
- 44:31him airfare? For all I think is his name.
- 44:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, she does. I mean she's she's a well
- 44:37meaning white woman. But what I love most about this
- 44:41cast of characters is meeting the man Abdul, like Paula.
- 44:47Samantha is Butler. Yeah, and he is a homo.
- 44:52Oh, for sure. But he's an Abu Dhabi.
- 44:55And so there is the scene where she says, I think my Butler
- 44:59might be gay. I asked him about his personal
- 45:03life and he said it's private. And I then I asked if he was in
- 45:07a relationship and he said that was private.
- 45:10And then I asked his name and he said Abdul, like Paula.
- 45:14And it's like, yeah, that's the joke.
- 45:16He also has makes eyes when Ricard leaves.
- 45:20He has like a little. Reaction.
- 45:21And that was so cute. When Samantha calls Ricard
- 45:25Lawrence of my labia. Girl.
- 45:30I mean, I hope you have a running list of things they say
- 45:33that are borderline offensive. I do OK, I'm sorry.
- 45:35Do you want me to? Do you want me to run through
- 45:38them? I mean I just want to make sure
- 45:39loose rubies is on there. You got any loose rubies?
- 45:43I know. I should have packed my burka.
- 45:45Oh yeah. Lawrence of my labia.
- 45:48Yep. Thank Allah.
- 45:55Abu Dhabi do, obviously, yeah. And they're countless more, but
- 45:59those are kind of the ones that really.
- 46:01Well, OK, lots of. Oh, magic carpet, did I say?
- 46:06That no, you didn't, which I was going to say lots of references
- 46:09to magic carpets cause like that's Kerry's first reaction to
- 46:12them going to the Middle East is like, I've always fantasized
- 46:16about being in the Middle East Jahara nights or something like
- 46:20that. And flying carpets.
- 46:23And they're all just like, oh, yeah.
- 46:25Oh. My God, same girl.
- 46:27I mean, I will say my favorite is Hanji Hanji and I always hear
- 46:32it in Samantha Samantha's voice. Of course, Hanji.
- 46:36Oh my God, kill me. But loose rubies, Got any loose
- 46:40rubies? Because she says, yeah, how do
- 46:42we tip in Abu Dhabi? And Carrie goes, got any loose
- 46:44rubies? Do you know Rubies is our
- 46:47birthstone? I did know that.
- 46:49So I thought that was like a nice little July thing.
- 46:53I'm going to start saying it. Yeah, I'm going to start saying
- 46:56it. But I'm not talking about the
- 46:58Middle East. I'm talking about July.
- 47:02Yeah, absolutely. So OK, they take they take
- 47:05Samantha's hormones away from her and she is just a sweaty
- 47:08mess the whole time. I thought like part of me was
- 47:11like, yeah, of course. They're like, they're doing a
- 47:12little fan service that a lot of people who are watching this are
- 47:15going to be Gen. X women who are of a certain
- 47:19age. They're going through menopause
- 47:20and they're like, oh, same girl. But but I did think that it was
- 47:24a little bit, it was just setting up the absolute cringe
- 47:34of Samantha not being able to keep any clothes on, which is,
- 47:37of course, like, you know, offensive to the people
- 47:41surrounding her. And she was.
- 47:43Having hot flashes and understood that she doesn't want
- 47:46to be wearing a lot of layers. But I was like, girl, just wear
- 47:49a linen, you know, that's kind of what I was thinking.
- 47:52So. But of course, again, they make
- 47:55that the central point of like, Abu Dhabi is so backwards
- 47:59because like, there's hostility toward her, like not respecting,
- 48:05like the modesty culture, rather than like, again, the literal
- 48:11servants I know assigned to each of them.
- 48:14And they're like, Oh my God, don't you love that?
- 48:17I mean, I will say it's a little refreshing that at least the
- 48:20servants are men. So true, but we still don't
- 48:24endorse indentured service. Or I want to say that very
- 48:30clearly. Yeah, but I am happy that it
- 48:32wasn't like you each have a woman assigned to you.
- 48:36Yeah, give them up 1 little plus for that.
- 48:40I like to see men working. Make them work.
- 48:45No, but yeah, you're totally right.
- 48:47And and it also gets so ridiculous, Samantha Jones
- 48:52resorts to coating her body in smashed yams to try to get the
- 48:57estrogen out of them. And I'm like, OK.
- 49:02Yeah, I mean, I understand that when you, when you bring like
- 49:08skin care products and things like that on a plane and TSA
- 49:13takes it away from you, it's tragic 'cause they have no, they
- 49:17don't understand how much a tiny little bottle of serum cost.
- 49:22They don't understand what you have to go through to get that.
- 49:26And so I was like, Samantha, I get it.
- 49:30But also, it was a tired storyline.
- 49:33This is a woman who is now back in New York, living her best
- 49:38life once again. She's she's booked and blessed
- 49:42at work. She's single again.
- 49:45She's, this is supposed to be a renaissance for Samantha.
- 49:48And instead we spend the entire movie seeing her, you know, in
- 49:52the bath, covered in yams and taking her clothes off 'cause
- 49:56she has hot flashes. Yeah, it, it's not a great look.
- 50:00And honestly, as far as like behind the scenes Kim Cattrall,
- 50:05the reason that she said no to a third movie is because she's
- 50:08like, I'm so sorry, but you cannot come up with good
- 50:11stories. Like the stories have run out.
- 50:14And to this I have to say, you know, there was a long time
- 50:17where I was angry cause Kim Cattrall in my opinion had
- 50:21ruined. There was supposed to be 3
- 50:23movies and they didn't do the third one because they were
- 50:26like, if all four of them don't sign on, we're not doing it.
- 50:30Which is why they didn't call the new series Sex and the City
- 50:34because without Samantha it's a new show.
- 50:37And so for a long time I was bitter.
- 50:38But when I watch this back now I think about Kim Cattrall and the
- 50:43really groundbreaking stuff she did on this series Sex and the
- 50:47City. I mean, up until the end with
- 50:49her breast cancer storyline. And it was again reductive to
- 50:54the character, kind of like Charlotte in the first movie.
- 50:57It was reductive. It was really reductive.
- 50:59And also I think it just plays on the trope that when a woman
- 51:02turns 50, she's expired and all she can do is complain about her
- 51:05hot flashes. It's like I.
- 51:08Heard a rumor and I want to tell you if I want to ask if you've
- 51:11ever heard this. OK, tell me.
- 51:13I have heard that in the original script, that was going
- 51:17to be the third Sex in the City movie, Samantha's storyline was
- 51:21going to be that she had sex with a barely legal Brady,
- 51:26Miranda's son. And that was when she was like,
- 51:31I'm not doing that. Oh my God, I've never heard
- 51:36that. And I kind of believed that they
- 51:39would try and make her do it. That is so fucking dark.
- 51:45Yeah. And when I heard that, that was
- 51:47the, that was when I was like, OK, if that's true, then IA
- 51:521000% don't blame her. Of course.
- 51:56Now she also has the feud with Sarah Jessica Parker.
- 51:58Famously. Course I don't.
- 52:00I've, I don't know well enough to pick sides.
- 52:03A lot of people ask me. So who do you think is right?
- 52:05I bet it's both of them. Yeah, they're both Divas, I'm
- 52:08sure. I was just going to say neither
- 52:09of them are like nice people. Yeah, I doubt it.
- 52:12I wouldn't. If I was a movie star, I
- 52:14wouldn't be. I'd be a monster.
- 52:16I'm not a movie. Star, I'd lose all my friends.
- 52:19We're Leo's. Yeah, we're monsters.
- 52:21Anyway, so yeah, for a long time I didn't get what she meant by
- 52:27saying that. But now upon watching this, I'm
- 52:29like, it is kind of a bummer that this movie is Samantha
- 52:33Jones final act other than her cameo.
- 52:36And then just like that, which again, is very short and kind of
- 52:40reductive, it's kind of sad that that's how she went out.
- 52:44And like, this is one thing that I don't love that Michael
- 52:48Patrick King did. He's a great man who's done a
- 52:50lot of great things. But this is one of the decisions
- 52:53that I am like, oof. You kind of come up with a
- 52:56better storyline for Samantha A A a leader in the depiction of
- 53:03women's liberation on screen couldn't have a better storyline
- 53:08as she travels to the Middle East.
- 53:10Yeah, like helping. I would.
- 53:11I would have loved to see a storyline where she meets a
- 53:16young woman who she empowers. Yeah.
- 53:19That would have been great it. Would have been great if she had
- 53:21her own Saint Louise of Saint Louis.
- 53:25That would have been amazing because I think in the series
- 53:29especially, Samantha's role was like very big sisterly.
- 53:33And even if it became because of her age, if it became more of
- 53:37like a maternal vibe, I would have loved that.
- 53:40Me too. Or even if she had done that
- 53:43with Abdul, yeah, she had the opportunity to be like, I want
- 53:48you to feel empowered. You're in this culture.
- 53:51But instead it was about her and her hormones.
- 53:53Yeah, and about her being completely oblivious to the fact
- 53:59that, like, she was drawing attention to herself.
- 54:03She was like, oh, who cares? Yeah, and Miranda's like you're
- 54:06being disrespectful. Yeah, she's like, we're going to
- 54:09get in trouble for this. Like, I really don't believe
- 54:12that Samantha, the Samantha that we know, the Samantha from the
- 54:16Sex and the City show, would have sex on the beach in Abu
- 54:20Dhabi knowing that she could get arrested.
- 54:24Yeah, I don't. Think, I think that she cares
- 54:25too much about her career. She knows that it would
- 54:28compromise her career and I think that she would prioritize
- 54:31that. She loves sex, but she loves her
- 54:33career more. Yeah, she would not have let her
- 54:36reputation dwindle like that to the sheep shake.
- 54:39Absolutely. So.
- 54:43So like really, All in all the it's a pretty reductive and
- 54:49racist depiction of people from the Middle East.
- 54:53It is cringe when the women go to the karaoke bar and they sing
- 55:00I Am Woman Hear Me Roar. It is, first of all, so funny,
- 55:05and it's not supposed to be funny, but it is.
- 55:08Yeah, it's funny for the wrong reasons.
- 55:10Exactly. And it's very much like like
- 55:14girl power, you know what I mean?
- 55:16Very Gen. X again.
- 55:17Exactly, and if you're Gen. X, we do love you but.
- 55:21But God. You're brand of feminism.
- 55:24Yeah, Jesus Christ. Girl, and you know, the the ways
- 55:29in which they're so like oblivious to the culture and
- 55:34embody all the reasons why people hate American tourists is
- 55:37just like it's right in your face.
- 55:40I feel embarrassed on their behalf.
- 55:41I have second hand embarrassment thinking, Oh my God, if I
- 55:45somehow ended up in Abu Dhabi, would people think I'm going to
- 55:50be like Carrie? You know what I'm saying?
- 55:51Or or Samantha, because actually that is a line that Ricard says
- 55:56to Samantha when she says, oh, Ricard, like Richard, so your
- 56:00name is Dick Spurt. And he goes, Could she be any
- 56:04more American? Such a read?
- 56:06I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 56:08It is such a read. And he says it like a little
- 56:11joke, but I'm like, he means it. Oh, he means it.
- 56:14I'm going to start saying that to people.
- 56:16Could you be anymore American? You're a little Dutch.
- 56:20I've never been off this continent, but I will say that
- 56:24to people from now on. Yeah, I mean, it's like you've
- 56:27been to Abu Dhabi because you've seen it on.
- 56:29TV. Well, I basically have been to
- 56:30Abu Dhabi. Basically just like the women at
- 56:33the end of the movie who they meet in the basically like
- 56:37women's empowerment circle. It's so bad where they shed.
- 56:40And there was no point to that by.
- 56:41The shed their veils. They say, we've never been to
- 56:44New York, but we appreciate the fashion.
- 56:47They're like, oh, how sad these women that can't leave.
- 56:50They can't leave their home country, but they love our
- 56:54fashion and they and they realize that they have more in
- 56:58common than they do differences from these women in burkas who
- 57:02worship them because they're from New York.
- 57:05Yeah, and for some reason are hanging out in like a shed in
- 57:09120 degree heat wearing their burqas over their fashion.
- 57:15Yeah, it was a very bad plot point.
- 57:18It was. It was gratuitous in the worst
- 57:20way. It.
- 57:21Captured the the like American nationalism of it all.
- 57:27Of being like we are what everyone wants to be.
- 57:32Everyone wants to be a New Yorker.
- 57:34Everyone wants to dress like us. Everyone wants to be like us.
- 57:38Everyone wants to live where we live.
- 57:40They want to be us because we are superior.
- 57:43That's what it, that's what it felt like.
- 57:45And they were like, Oh my God, how cute these women.
- 57:49They do their hair underneath their burkas.
- 57:51Yeah, and how lucky we are. And then the women to sneak out
- 57:56of the market. My God.
- 57:59Borrow some burkas. Yeah, if you ever want to see
- 58:05Kristen Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica
- 58:08Parker in burkas, you get to win this movie.
- 58:12Should they have done it? Probably not.
- 58:13Absolutely not. Should they have done the call
- 58:16back to the movie from the 1930s where the woman hikes her skirt
- 58:21up a little bit to show her leg? It happened one night.
- 58:24Yeah, it. Happened one night.
- 58:25So again, it's suggesting that in Abu Dhabi they're living in
- 58:30the 1930s, that they're so backwards that they are like
- 58:34treat women so badly and like, yes, there are a lot of, there
- 58:38are a lot of like women's rights violations in Abu Dhabi, but.
- 58:46Showing your It's not treated as a problem, it's treated as
- 58:50something they can make a caricature out of.
- 58:53It's like, Oh my gosh, it's so cute.
- 58:54These men, they never see women's bodies, so they're going
- 58:57to go crazy over a leg like they're some fucking wacko in
- 59:01the 1930s. Yeah, like the cartoon wolf with
- 59:04his eyes popping out. Ooga.
- 59:06Exactly. There's one more thing I think
- 59:09we really need to cover. Yeah.
- 59:11Which is that when Carrie comes back home.
- 59:15And I'm so sorry if this was already in your notes, but no.
- 59:17That the last thing in my notes was not Carrie flashing her leg.
- 59:20Oh, great. OK, so yeah, this this is the
- 59:23conclusion of the movie. The girls fly home.
- 59:27Charlotte realizes, Oh, the nanny's a lesbian.
- 59:31Anyway, Harry's not going to cheat with her, because she
- 59:33wouldn't even want Harry. Never mind the fact that Harry
- 59:36just wouldn't do that, right? Of course, Miranda joins a firm
- 59:41where she can be an appreciated lawyer and people are nice to
- 59:45her and she has a seat at the table.
- 59:48Yay. That's her whole story.
- 59:50That's the whole story. And then Samantha has sex on the
- 59:53beach in the good old US of A where she can have sex on the
- 59:57beach with the. Land of the Free.
- 59:58The Land of the Free The last shot besides her cameo in And
- 1:00:01Just like That of Samantha Jones in this universe, is having sex
- 1:00:05on the beach, which I kind of love.
- 1:00:08Really. I do.
- 1:00:10I mean, yes, career. Yeah, but like, yes, like her
- 1:00:15being sexually liberated. Yes, it's about the liberation
- 1:00:18to me. Yeah, it is a little MAGA Y that
- 1:00:21it's like a under. It's on the 4th of July under
- 1:00:24red, white and blue fireworks. I did laugh out loud.
- 1:00:27I could live without that. Yeah.
- 1:00:29Carrie's conclusion? She comes home big, did not pick
- 1:00:34her up from the airport like he promised.
- 1:00:36Probably because he's mad because she kissed her ex.
- 1:00:38And called him in the middle of a work day to tell him.
- 1:00:41Yeah, and was a selfish bitch about it.
- 1:00:44And I love her and I'm a selfish bitch.
- 1:00:46So I'm saying that not out of judgement, but out of.
- 1:00:48Love and look, you can say that because some of your best
- 1:00:51friends are selfish bitches. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:54And again, I'm. I am one.
- 1:00:55Yeah. So she comes home.
- 1:00:58She's stunned for some reason that he's not waiting for her.
- 1:01:01He eventually comes home and he tells her what her punishment
- 1:01:05is. And her punishment is that even
- 1:01:08though at first she didn't wear a ring, now she has to wear a
- 1:01:11ring so that she can remember that she's married and she
- 1:01:15doesn't want a traditional diamond.
- 1:01:17So what's on it? A black diamond.
- 1:01:19And he, she goes, why is it a black diamond?
- 1:01:23And he goes, because you're one-of-a-kind.
- 1:01:25Because you're not like. You're not like other girls,
- 1:01:28which is her favorite thing to hear, which I kind of got it
- 1:01:31saying I'm not like other girls too.
- 1:01:34And she goes, oh, I thought you were going to say, because it's
- 1:01:36the color of my soul. Oh my God.
- 1:01:38Her punishment is that she has to wear a diamond ring and
- 1:01:41that's her punishment for kissing Aiden.
- 1:01:43And honestly, like the fact that he was like, OK, I walked around
- 1:01:47all day. I was really upset.
- 1:01:49And then he comes home and realizes like, OK, he's Aiden is
- 1:01:53not a real threat. No.
- 1:01:55It was a mistake and like, we're going to be fine.
- 1:01:58I was like, thank God I didn't need them to make this another
- 1:02:02Stephen Miranda. No.
- 1:02:04From the first movie, no. I was so glad that they just
- 1:02:08wrapped it up. Yeah, they had to at that point
- 1:02:11because, by the way, this movie's 2 1/2 hours, and this
- 1:02:14was at the end where you're kind of just like, all right, Yeah,
- 1:02:17Even me. Yeah.
- 1:02:18And I honestly would probably watch 2 1/2 hours of Carrie
- 1:02:21flipping through Vogue magazine. But like, even I at the end of
- 1:02:24this movie, I'm like, OK. Yeah.
- 1:02:27That's enough. I was good for 11 years to learn
- 1:02:29just like that. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:32So yeah, that's the T. And just like that, they ruined
- 1:02:37Sex and the City for a short time.
- 1:02:40Yeah, yeah, I feel OK saying that if.
- 1:02:43OK, I know that a lot of people, a lot of your haters really
- 1:02:49didn't like and just like that, but if they had ended Sex and
- 1:02:54the City on Sex and the City 2. Which they did for a long time.
- 1:02:59Which? They did for a while.
- 1:03:00I feel like the the universe was still out of whack and I feel
- 1:03:08like the fact that they hadn't just like that, even if it was
- 1:03:11not that good, it was better than Sex and the City 2 and I
- 1:03:16can say that without having seen it.
- 1:03:18Because what 1000? Because truly, what could be
- 1:03:22worse than Sex and the City 2? No and just like that, honestly,
- 1:03:26if you watch the whole series of Sex and the City and you watch
- 1:03:29the 2 movies, don't end with the second movie.
- 1:03:33Either stop after the first movie or go all the way till the
- 1:03:37end of and just like That. And honestly go to the end of
- 1:03:40And just like That. Because the way I look at this
- 1:03:43universe, the series is act one, the movies are act 2, and then
- 1:03:48just like That is act 3. Really.
- 1:03:50Yes, OK. And you will see a full-fledged
- 1:03:52Carrie Bradshaw development in the three acts.
- 1:03:55If I watched the first episode of And Just Like That and I
- 1:04:00watched the finale of And Just Like That, could I do that?
- 1:04:06Honestly, you probably could because they kind of call back
- 1:04:12to the beginning of the first season of And just Like That at
- 1:04:14the very end, yeah. But everyone gets a happy
- 1:04:18ending. Yeah.
- 1:04:20It was not a planned series finale, but I think they kind of
- 1:04:23knew. So there are not cliffhangers,
- 1:04:24which is good, thank God. But it could have been a better
- 1:04:27series finale. But the most important thing is
- 1:04:30Carrie Bradshaw becomes fully realized as a post big woman.
- 1:04:35Yeah. So it is worth it.
- 1:04:37I, this is, I'm telling you, watching just like that.
- 1:04:40Don't let Sex and the City 2 be the final thing you watch from
- 1:04:43this universe. That's all I got to say.
- 1:04:45At least just like go back to your favorite episode from the
- 1:04:48series as a palate cleanser to remember what you what you may
- 1:04:53have loved about it. Or if you haven't seen the
- 1:04:56series, just pick an episode from the series.
- 1:05:00True. OK.
- 1:05:01True, Luna. Is it about time that we wrap it
- 1:05:04up? She's saying excuse me, excuse.
- 1:05:06Me. Wow.
- 1:05:07We got through this whole episode without plugging your
- 1:05:09book. A mural in space.
- 1:05:11A gay boy's memoir. Oh my God.
- 1:05:13And just like that, I remembered so Luna.
- 1:05:19Come here. It's OK, we're we're wrapping
- 1:05:22up. Luna can stay here for the
- 1:05:23conclusion. She just loves talking about my
- 1:05:25book. She is a reader, and so if you
- 1:05:29haven't gotten a copy of Cameron's book or if you haven't
- 1:05:32listened to it on audiobook, what are you waiting for?
- 1:05:36Yeah, a mural in space. A gay boys memoir.
- 1:05:39By Cameron Tyler By Cameron Tyler with AK.
- 1:05:42That's Cameron with AK. My first book's called Lucas
- 1:05:45with AK. You can also listen to that
- 1:05:46because I'm like Carrie Bradshaw.
- 1:05:48I write books. He writes books.
- 1:05:51And by the way, in And just like that, she switches to fiction.
- 1:05:55Really. So like Carrie Bradshaw, I write
- 1:05:57fiction, non fiction. I have a podcast, I live in the
- 1:06:00city, I have fabulous friends and I'm a mess and I'm selfish.
- 1:06:05And just like that. And just like that, he became
- 1:06:07Carrie. That's me in a nutshell.
- 1:06:09Oh my God, Carrie with AK. Carrie, with AK, like John
- 1:06:19Cameron, is there anything else that you think the listener
- 1:06:21should know or anything else from this train wreck that we
- 1:06:24didn't cover? I think that we covered all of
- 1:06:27the important things. I just like.
- 1:06:29I want to go on the record and say this movie is horrible and I
- 1:06:33love it and I'll never not love it.
- 1:06:35It has a special place in my heart.
- 1:06:37Even though it is the worst part of this universe, I would still
- 1:06:41choose it a million times over 'cause I am that devoted.
- 1:06:47Yikes, I wouldn't and I do. I really enjoy the series, don't
- 1:06:53get me wrong, and the first movie has its shortcomings, but
- 1:06:56overall still a pleasant experience.
- 1:06:59I love the first movie. 5 stars for me.
- 1:07:02This was the second time that I had watched Sex and the City 2,
- 1:07:07and I did it for homework, of course, and I'm I don't imagine
- 1:07:10that I'll ever watch it again. Never say never, OK?
- 1:07:16All right. Listeners, thank you so much for
- 1:07:18tuning in. Or if you're watching this on
- 1:07:20YouTube, please subscribe to the channel so that, you know, every
- 1:07:25week you're gonna get a fresh did that age well in your
- 1:07:29YouTube feed. It's typically every week, but
- 1:07:32sometimes it's every other week because bitch is busy.
- 1:07:35I have a job. I'm like Miranda.
- 1:07:37I'm like Miranda. Oh my God, some of us have a
- 1:07:39job. Yeah.
- 1:07:42And thank you to Luna the dog for being here and for being
- 1:07:45cute and perfect. And thank you, Cameron.
- 1:07:48Oh my God, thank you for having me and thanks for coming on my
- 1:07:53show. You're.
- 1:07:53So welcome. Yes, again, listener, go back
- 1:07:56and listen to the crossover episode on the Cameron Show
- 1:08:00where we talk about the first Sex in the City.
- 1:08:03Yeah, you got to listen to both of these.
- 1:08:05Obviously. If you don't watch the Cameron
- 1:08:07show, you're only getting half the story literally today.
- 1:08:12And today that is so true. Today, that's literally true.
- 1:08:15OK, love you all. Bye.
- 1:08:17Love you. Bye.
