- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. Welcome back into the NFL LA News for
- 0:20Speaker 1: another hour of NFL Now, My Patrick claybod Here in
- 0:22Speaker 1: the aforementioned news We're bringing you what's coming up this hour,
- 0:26Speaker 1: which is we're gonna hear from DeAndre Hopkins, who was
- 0:28Speaker 1: a guest on the Pat McAfee show regarding potentially moving
- 0:32Speaker 1: spots and leaving the Arizona Cardinals. He does possess a
- 0:35Speaker 1: no trade clause and he will be the ultimate decider
- 0:39Speaker 1: if he is able to be moved via trade. We'll
- 0:42Speaker 1: hear from him coming up. But also we will look
- 0:44Speaker 1: at the quarterback position and a few folks and they
- 0:48Speaker 1: trusted area playing get paid attention to Aaron Rodgers as
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Jets had a contentent fly to California to meet
- 0:56Speaker 1: with Aaron Rodgers yesterday. This after the Jets and we're
- 1:00Speaker 1: given permission to speak with Aaron Rodgers by the Packers,
- 1:03Speaker 1: as a potential trade could loom if Aaron Rodgers does
- 1:07Speaker 1: decide that he would like to play football in twenty
- 1:11Speaker 1: twenty three. Earlier today on Good Morning Football, C j
- 1:14Speaker 1: Uzama was talking about the potential and then Kyle Brent
- 1:17Speaker 1: put Aaron Jones in position to debate him regarding the quarterback.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Just just listening in terms of Aaron, then you guys
- 1:26Speaker 1: have someone at the table who's spoken very highly of him.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Um yeah, I mean you ask something like that to
- 1:31Speaker 1: your team, and then you know, you catch touchdown again,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you catch touchdown passes from someone who's future Hall of Famer,
- 1:38Speaker 1: You're you're not going to be upset about that. Aaron's
- 1:42Speaker 1: he's openly hitting on your girl as you sit here
- 1:44Speaker 1: speaking to him and tell him why Aaron's not going anywhere,
- 1:46Speaker 1: speak to that. He's a legacy guy. He's been in
- 1:49Speaker 1: Green Bay for so long. He's gonna stay here. Uh.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He loves it there here everything he needs. He already
- 1:56Speaker 1: has his house, all of that, so it's just too
- 1:59Speaker 1: easy to stay there. He knows the system, knows everything.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Got the like he said, got the young receivers going
- 2:05Speaker 1: way through the season. So I hope he's not over
- 2:07Speaker 1: there for the Jets. Oh no, no, I mean there's
- 2:11Speaker 1: no pitch, but I mean this man was talking about
- 2:13Speaker 1: some stuff. We already have two we got we had
- 2:16Speaker 1: what the uh year of the year, the defensive Rookie
- 2:19Speaker 1: of the Year. Um, you know, we could have, honestly,
- 2:22Speaker 1: we could have honestly had two offensive Rookies of the
- 2:24Speaker 1: Year and we could have split it between g and
- 2:27Speaker 1: and uh and our and our boy real quick. But um, yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean I think, I think our
- 2:34Speaker 1: offense and what we have and what we're going to
- 2:36Speaker 1: bring to the table next year is going to be
- 2:37Speaker 1: no matter what it's gonna be, it's gonna be of course. Well,
- 2:41Speaker 1: the nodding from Aaron Jones behind the sunglasses, I'm trying
- 2:44Speaker 1: to pick out some body language out of that En
- 2:47Speaker 1: Rapp report. Mike gar Fullo our NFL network and Ciders
- 2:49Speaker 1: joining us now they had the conversation in what's next
- 2:53Speaker 1: with the Jets and Aaron Rodgers. That was kind of cool.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I appreciated the awkward just there. And it is interesting,
- 3:00Speaker 1: like if you look at the Jets offense the way
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's constructed, like pretty good for a quarterback just to
- 3:05Speaker 1: drop right in there. Like, for instance, Aaron Rodgers has
- 3:08Speaker 1: loved Randall Cobb for so many years, and perhaps Randall
- 3:10Speaker 1: Cob could follow him to the Jets if he goes there.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But they got Randall Cobb it's his name is Elijah Moore,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and he's a lot younger. Jets have some weapons, would
- 3:17Speaker 1: certainly be a welcome place for him to go. We
- 3:20Speaker 1: do not know whether or not he is going to
- 3:22Speaker 1: go there. We don't know whether he wants to him.
- 3:23Speaker 1: We don't know whether he's going to retire. I guess
- 3:25Speaker 1: presumably going back to the Packers as an option, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: the obviously looking less likely by the day over here,
- 3:31Speaker 1: as Rogers openly weighs other places, this is really on him.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Does he want to go to the Jets. If he does,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Michael tell the Packers go make the trade. Presumably they
- 3:40Speaker 1: would be able to do that, send him to New
- 3:43Speaker 1: York Jets, just like they once sent Bred Parvart to
- 3:45Speaker 1: New York Jets, and they would move forward with Jordan's love.
- 3:47Speaker 1: If Rogers retires, which is certainly possible, then everyone just
- 3:51Speaker 1: kind of goes through separate ways. In Jordan loves the
- 3:53Speaker 1: quarterback anyway. But as we've been the last several weeks,
- 3:56Speaker 1: we were all waiting on Aaron Rodgers, and the feeling
- 4:01Speaker 1: we get from Packers folks, by the way, on love
- 4:03Speaker 1: is just like we didn't know for sure that Aaron
- 4:06Speaker 1: Rodgers was special. When we got rid of Brett Farven
- 4:09Speaker 1: turned it over to Aaron Rodgers. We felt good about that.
- 4:13Speaker 1: We feel good about Jordan Love the same way. We
- 4:15Speaker 1: don't know for sure, but we feel good enough that
- 4:16Speaker 1: if we have to turn it over to him and
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's time, we feel good. From what we saw last
- 4:21Speaker 1: year in that game against the Eagles, he man, he
- 4:23Speaker 1: looked sharp in that one. So that's a big factor
- 4:26Speaker 1: here as well as is the money for Rogers when
- 4:28Speaker 1: he goes to the new team. I had talked to
- 4:30Speaker 1: a Jet source a couple of weeks ago before, long
- 4:33Speaker 1: before this process began, and it was about that sixty
- 4:36Speaker 1: million dollars that Rogers. I mean, that's not a fair comparison.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Come on, now we're looking at there. This is something
- 4:46Speaker 1: the saddest tale of the tape I've ever seen in
- 4:48Speaker 1: my life. I don't even remember what I was gonna
- 4:52Speaker 1: say that. It's just, honestly, because Zach Wilson gets prominently
- 4:58Speaker 1: featured there, but that Patrick that includes everybody, so it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: not all just Zach. Right, dramatic sound effect when it
- 5:08Speaker 1: popped up too, you know, Yeah, sixty million dollars, it's
- 5:14Speaker 1: a lot of money. Regardless of whether it's the Jets
- 5:16Speaker 1: or another team, that's gonna have to be massage. But
- 5:19Speaker 1: Rogers has said in the past that he's open to
- 5:21Speaker 1: massaging that number to make it work. One of the
- 5:24Speaker 1: things that needs to be done in addition to trade
- 5:26Speaker 1: compensation for the Jets, to you know, improve on the
- 5:29Speaker 1: right column. Yeah, maybe we'll the graphical look a little nice,
- 5:32Speaker 1: or we'll keep the sound effect for you though, Mike
- 5:35Speaker 1: also in terms of picks and compensation and maybe massaging numbers.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson got the non exclusive franchise tag yesterday. How
- 5:44Speaker 1: does this process at least theoretically play out here? Well,
- 5:49Speaker 1: next week when free agency starts and players are allowed
- 5:52Speaker 1: to talk to people. Lamar Jackson his own agent as
- 5:54Speaker 1: of now, and I haven't heard that he's hiring an agent,
- 5:57Speaker 1: So I just say as of now, because you ever know,
- 6:00Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson gets to talk to teams, a team presumably
- 6:02Speaker 1: could sign him to an offer sheet, and then the
- 6:04Speaker 1: pact Us would have the opportunity packers. There you go.
- 6:07Speaker 1: The Ravens would have the opportunity to match that offer sheet.
- 6:11Speaker 1: If they don't, it's two first round picks for the Ravens.
- 6:13Speaker 1: They start over with a new quarterback, and Lamar Jackson
- 6:17Speaker 1: goes to the new team. But which really interesting here
- 6:19Speaker 1: is they have tried many different ways, many different contracts,
- 6:23Speaker 1: many different offers to try to get Lamar Jackson engaged
- 6:26Speaker 1: negotiating talking about a new deal. It has not happened
- 6:30Speaker 1: over years. Perhaps a new team coming in and saying
- 6:34Speaker 1: this is your market value, this is where we think
- 6:37Speaker 1: you are. Perhaps that gets Lamar Jackson to agree to
- 6:40Speaker 1: a long term deal with the Ravens, who would then match.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But we don't know. But at least now we're going
- 6:45Speaker 1: to see some sort of market for Lamar Jackson could
- 6:49Speaker 1: get paid. And Lamar Jackson is not the first quarterback
- 6:53Speaker 1: to be tagged and feel insulted by team's attempts to
- 6:56Speaker 1: resign him. I go back to Kirk Cousins when he
- 6:58Speaker 1: was with Washington years ago, and the first offer from
- 7:02Speaker 1: Washington was twelve and a half million dollars per season,
- 7:04Speaker 1: which is amazing to think how far we've come because
- 7:07Speaker 1: backups are almost making that. But it was insulting at
- 7:10Speaker 1: the time, and they made him play out the two
- 7:12Speaker 1: tags and he got to a point where he says,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm so close to unfettered free agency. I'm gonna take it.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna see what's out there. Lamar Jackson may have
- 7:20Speaker 1: to do that. They have to just play out this
- 7:21Speaker 1: tag and play out the next tag and get to
- 7:24Speaker 1: the point where the two first round picks and whatever
- 7:27Speaker 1: compensation coming back is gone, and then it's just about
- 7:30Speaker 1: all right. I'm wide open for business. Everybody could And
- 7:34Speaker 1: in the meantime, by the way, you're gonna make thirty
- 7:36Speaker 1: two million dollars plus one hundred and twenty percent of
- 7:38Speaker 1: that the following it. It's gonna make some good money
- 7:40Speaker 1: along the way. If that's where you want to get
- 7:43Speaker 1: to the point where everybody's at the table and you
- 7:45Speaker 1: can bid one against the other. Kirk Cousins had to
- 7:48Speaker 1: wait to play all that out. Lamar Jackson, maybe if
- 7:51Speaker 1: you want to get to that point where you don't
- 7:53Speaker 1: have to worry about anything in the compensation standpoint, muddling
- 7:56Speaker 1: muddling the waters, then that's where you gotta get. And
- 7:59Speaker 1: perhaps that was the plan, because that's essentially the path
- 8:03Speaker 1: of that work. Fine at this point, guy should do
- 8:05Speaker 1: that can make the case. We'll see how that goes
- 8:09Speaker 1: for Lamar. We'll be back with Ian Rapport and Mike
- 8:11Speaker 1: Garrett follow our NFL Network considers as we continue this
- 8:14Speaker 1: hour of NFL Now. A couple of quarterbacks that we've
- 8:17Speaker 1: just discussed on this list the highest career win percentage.
- 8:21Speaker 1: There's Lamar Jackson forty five wins, just sixteen losses, matching
- 8:25Speaker 1: the sixteen from Patrick Mahomesh's got a season and a
- 8:29Speaker 1: few fewer games missed ahead of Lamar and Mahomes at
- 8:32Speaker 1: some of that list with a eight hundred, which is
- 8:34Speaker 1: honestly kind of bananas. As Mark Cross and Judy Batista
- 8:37Speaker 1: are back with us here on NFL Now, Judy, the
- 8:39Speaker 1: Ravens have had all the success with Lamar. He's been
- 8:42Speaker 1: able to accomplish some things despite some lack of personnel
- 8:47Speaker 1: around him in Baltimore. Where do they go if this
- 8:50Speaker 1: doesn't go the way that they want it to? Well,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I think Ian just made an interesting point that perhaps
- 8:56Speaker 1: this is the Baltimore Ravens attempt to create some movement
- 9:00Speaker 1: in these negotiations because they have been at this for
- 9:03Speaker 1: at least a year, maybe even longer, and they just
- 9:06Speaker 1: haven't been able to get to the number. We know
- 9:09Speaker 1: that when Deshaun Watson got the fully guaranteed contract from
- 9:12Speaker 1: Cleveland that Steve Bishotti, the owner of the Ravens, was
- 9:15Speaker 1: not happy about her. He was one of the owners
- 9:17Speaker 1: who actually spoke up publicly about how unhappy he was
- 9:20Speaker 1: about that fully guaranteed contract. So if that's the sticking point,
- 9:24Speaker 1: there's just not been enough movement to close the gap.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And perhaps the Baltimore Ravens are putting this out there
- 9:31Speaker 1: and saying, let's see what your market is. Go see
- 9:34Speaker 1: what your market is, see what other teams can come
- 9:36Speaker 1: up with. The Ravens can always match it and keep
- 9:39Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, which I think ultimately still what they would
- 9:42Speaker 1: like to do. This is one of the best quarterbacks
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the league. I don't think they want to lose
- 9:47Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, but I think they had to figure out
- 9:49Speaker 1: a way to create some movement because there was no movement.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That had to be incredibly frustrating for the Ravens. It's
- 9:56Speaker 1: probably really frustrating for Lamar too. So I think that
- 10:00Speaker 1: this tactic at least creates something will happen here and
- 10:05Speaker 1: will force a decision. Yeah, Jody, you talk about the
- 10:09Speaker 1: lack of movement, and that's been the most shocking part
- 10:11Speaker 1: of this development. Lamar Jackson development for me here. He
- 10:15Speaker 1: is a twenty six year old guy who the former MVP.
- 10:18Speaker 1: We showed how he wins. All this guy does since
- 10:21Speaker 1: he's been there is win and produce. When he's on
- 10:23Speaker 1: the field, they win. You know, you have a chance
- 10:26Speaker 1: in any game that be the favorite. And he is
- 10:29Speaker 1: a top five, top four, top three player in this
- 10:32Speaker 1: league with his impact that he has had and really
- 10:35Speaker 1: has been historic in what he's done. There really is
- 10:38Speaker 1: no comparison to anyone else in history to say this
- 10:41Speaker 1: is what this young man has done at this point
- 10:43Speaker 1: in his career. And you know what, we're not even
- 10:45Speaker 1: interested in talking to him. That's the most shocking part.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It's one thing if teams were actually engaging in conversations
- 10:51Speaker 1: and try to talk to Lamar at least feel it
- 10:53Speaker 1: out and see where it's going. But for teams to
- 10:56Speaker 1: just openly saved Nope. That guy's an impact player who
- 10:59Speaker 1: changes every game that he steps on the field, and
- 11:01Speaker 1: we don't even want to talk to him. That's been
- 11:03Speaker 1: the most shocking development for me and this whole Lamar situation.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Will team start getting in there? Was it attacked by
- 11:10Speaker 1: the Ravens, I don't know. The answers, the behind the
- 11:13Speaker 1: scenes of all that, but just looking at a pure
- 11:16Speaker 1: football standpoint and the impact that Lamar Jackson has had
- 11:19Speaker 1: compared to other quarterbacks who got paid in this cycle
- 11:22Speaker 1: the last few cycles, who had done not even half
- 11:25Speaker 1: of what Lamar has done. I've gotten huge contracts. That's
- 11:28Speaker 1: the most disheartening and shocking thing for me in this development.
- 11:31Speaker 1: You know, I've always loved Lamar Jackson. Hopefully he will
- 11:33Speaker 1: get what he deserves. But we'll see what's happening right now.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Doesn't look great, Yeah, and perhaps I guess the most
- 11:39Speaker 1: charitable view that we could take fingers crossed as teams
- 11:41Speaker 1: are doing some smoke screening, and we'll come out next
- 11:43Speaker 1: week and Lamar will have several offers and he'll eventually
- 11:46Speaker 1: be paid to his level of accomplishment in the NFL.
- 11:49Speaker 1: A's least my personal hope. Thanks to Jude Fatista, Mark
- 11:52Speaker 1: Ross examining the circumstances for one Lamar Jackson news coming
- 11:57Speaker 1: into the newsroom today, team's making inquiries about the availability
- 12:02Speaker 1: of DeAndre Hopkins, who has a couple of years after
- 12:05Speaker 1: on his contract with the Arizona Cardinals. The sourcing on
- 12:08Speaker 1: that DeAndre Hopkins on the Pat McAfee show. I would
- 12:14Speaker 1: love to give you as much information as I can, AJ,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but right now, um, you know, we you know, we've
- 12:20Speaker 1: just been you know, keeping our head down, obviously paying
- 12:23Speaker 1: attention to the headlines and tabloids and stuff like that,
- 12:26Speaker 1: because you got to, uh, you know, when you hear
- 12:28Speaker 1: some of those trade rumors, how you would hate to
- 12:30Speaker 1: think that, you know, all those things are lies. Yea.
- 12:36Speaker 1: You know, so you know, I've been traded before and
- 12:39Speaker 1: you know, heard speculation about it, and I kind of
- 12:41Speaker 1: shoot it off and I was like, Nah, the Texans
- 12:43Speaker 1: would never trade me. And then next thing, you know, here,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I'm going to the Cardinals. So you know, we keep
- 12:47Speaker 1: we keep close attention to the tabloids, but we don't
- 12:50Speaker 1: put anything out in the tabloids ourselves. You know, we
- 12:52Speaker 1: just you know, we you know, DeAndre Hopkins gonna do
- 12:55Speaker 1: what DeAndre Hopkins doing them on the field, and that's
- 12:57Speaker 1: all that mattered. All that matters on the field, but
- 13:00Speaker 1: it matters to us. Is eing and micro back with
- 13:03Speaker 1: us about the future of DeAndre Hopkins. Of the better
- 13:05Speaker 1: receivers in the NFL, one of better vets Ian Your
- 13:09Speaker 1: takeaway from what he had to say compared to what
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know about the market for one new Copkins. First
- 13:14Speaker 1: of all, that hat is amazing. I'm jealous. I can't
- 13:16Speaker 1: pull it off really awesome, especially post workout. I thought
- 13:20Speaker 1: he really brought it. Anyway. As far as the market,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I mean there is the rumors are true. There is
- 13:26Speaker 1: some interest. I know some teams have inquired with the
- 13:28Speaker 1: Arizona Cardinals about potentially trading for DeAndre Hopkins. This has
- 13:31Speaker 1: been going on since around the time of the trade
- 13:34Speaker 1: deadline last year, which really shouldn't be any surprise. He
- 13:37Speaker 1: is a excellent receiver, still plenty left on a team
- 13:40Speaker 1: that maybe looking to reset a little bit. I think
- 13:42Speaker 1: that would probably make some sense. I hope that's a
- 13:45Speaker 1: fair way to sort of describe it. So yeah, I
- 13:48Speaker 1: think things some teams are interested. And here's what's kind
- 13:50Speaker 1: of fascinating. You look at his contract. He's got nineteen
- 13:53Speaker 1: and a half million due this year. He's got fourteen
- 13:55Speaker 1: nine do next year. My understanding is he is going
- 13:59Speaker 1: to be flexible if he has traded, flexible as far
- 14:02Speaker 1: as those two years go, not shooting for a top
- 14:06Speaker 1: of the market deal. I'll certainly be willing to work
- 14:09Speaker 1: with any potential team, I would say, and that makes
- 14:12Speaker 1: just a little more interesting. Oh, definitely an offensive weapon
- 14:16Speaker 1: that has a lot of value. The Giants get their
- 14:18Speaker 1: quarterback signed yesterday. Daniel Jones acknowledging today meeting with the
- 14:23Speaker 1: media that there's going to be some expectations that come
- 14:25Speaker 1: with the salary. What's the road ahead for the Giants?
- 14:29Speaker 1: Mark Yes Patrick, I remember asking Joe Shane about that,
- 14:32Speaker 1: the Giants general manager at the combine, saying, this negotiation,
- 14:36Speaker 1: it's got to be like, you've been good, but if
- 14:39Speaker 1: you're gonna hit this number that we're gonna give you,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you got to be better. And he said yeah. And
- 14:42Speaker 1: Daniel Jones would admit to you that there's, as he
- 14:45Speaker 1: put it, more meat on that bone for him to improve. Well,
- 14:47Speaker 1: if he improves, the contracts going to improve with him
- 14:50Speaker 1: as well. We talked about four years, one hundred and
- 14:53Speaker 1: sixty million. That's forty million dollars per season over the
- 14:56Speaker 1: life of the contract. It's actually forty one average over
- 14:59Speaker 1: the first two years. Then it dips down, which was
- 15:01Speaker 1: to the advantage of the Giants for a three year
- 15:03Speaker 1: cash flow. But here's what I'm gonna try to say
- 15:06Speaker 1: about this. If Daniel Jones plays all four years, he's
- 15:09Speaker 1: gonna make more than one hundred and sixty million, and
- 15:11Speaker 1: that average of forty is going to be higher because
- 15:13Speaker 1: these incentives are reachable if he's a good quarterback, if
- 15:17Speaker 1: he's ranked in the top fifteen, ten five, it continues
- 15:20Speaker 1: to go off. As he gets hired these incentives, he's
- 15:23Speaker 1: gonna make millions on top of that one six, he's
- 15:25Speaker 1: probably gonna get to an average of like forty two,
- 15:27Speaker 1: forty three, which is where he wanted to get anyway.
- 15:29Speaker 1: So the structure of this deal I think was fair
- 15:33Speaker 1: for both sides, and I think it was really smart
- 15:35Speaker 1: because Jones can kind of earn his way into that
- 15:37Speaker 1: bracket that he was talking about, which was close to
- 15:40Speaker 1: the mid forties on that contract. It's a good structure,
- 15:43Speaker 1: and I think he's going to earn more than the
- 15:44Speaker 1: forty patrick the structure that they came down to the wire,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but they were able to pull it off after being
- 15:48Speaker 1: in the bunkers and maybe and by the way that
- 15:51Speaker 1: was done in the last twenty five minutes, like that
- 15:53Speaker 1: was lightning quick for a complicated incentive package like that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Credit to both sides forgetting it done. Well, the culmination
- 16:00Speaker 1: is stressful. Weeks of four vessful, coming down to the
- 16:03Speaker 1: final moments. Thanks to NFL networking side the Rappaport five
- 16:05Speaker 1: Gerald follow as we continue on here, giants have their guy,
- 16:09Speaker 1: Justin Fields is the guy in Chicago. How do they
- 16:13Speaker 1: feel around him? The Fields Building? It's coming up next
- 16:19Speaker 1: on NFL. We're back here, live on NFL Network and
- 16:29Speaker 1: live on NFL dot com. Greg Rosenthal's Top one hundred
- 16:33Speaker 1: and one available free Agents. It's a living document, constantly
- 16:37Speaker 1: changing because guys are signed in Javon Hargrave right now,
- 16:42Speaker 1: number one Orlando Brown, and then Hargrave's teammate CJ. Gardner
- 16:46Speaker 1: Johnson and then James Bradberry. A lot of Eagles featured
- 16:49Speaker 1: prominently in the top ten available free agents, a lot
- 16:53Speaker 1: of teams in need of acquiring talent. If you want
- 16:55Speaker 1: to see who should go and make big splashes and
- 16:58Speaker 1: free agency, check out Jeff Jdia's article on NFL dot
- 17:01Speaker 1: com slash Jedia. So let's start with the Chicago b Jeff,
- 17:06Speaker 1: A team that needed talent. But what do they do
- 17:08Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three. Well, they're in a great position.
- 17:11Speaker 1: They've got a ton of money, almost one hundred million
- 17:13Speaker 1: dollars in salary, cats space to work with. And I
- 17:16Speaker 1: know Matt eber Flews, their head coach with the combine
- 17:18Speaker 1: talking about wanting to bring in players who love football
- 17:20Speaker 1: and are passionate about football. And you guys who can block,
- 17:23Speaker 1: Guys who can rush the passer, guys who can tackle.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And so it starts with that offensive line has been
- 17:28Speaker 1: bad for a while. You see Mike mcglinch you here
- 17:31Speaker 1: right tackle for San Francisco. He could help them out
- 17:33Speaker 1: right away. Ben Powers, a really strong guard from the
- 17:36Speaker 1: Baltimore Ravens, another guy who could help them up front.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Their general manager, Ryan Poles, has been a part of
- 17:41Speaker 1: the Kansasy Chiefs, saw the way they rebuilt their offensive
- 17:44Speaker 1: line a couple of years ago, so he knows how
- 17:45Speaker 1: this works. On defense, they gotta find playmakers. They had
- 17:48Speaker 1: twenty sacks last year, worst defensive football. They got to
- 17:51Speaker 1: need to help on the defensive line and that linebacker
- 17:54Speaker 1: mark them. Yeah, well, Jeff, you mentioned some positions. You
- 17:57Speaker 1: could pretty much put any position there with the Bears.
- 17:59Speaker 1: They are and help and improvement with. And look, they
- 18:02Speaker 1: are in an unbelievable position, not just in free agency,
- 18:05Speaker 1: but sitting at the top of the draft and having
- 18:06Speaker 1: their franchise quarterback and being able to manipulate that to
- 18:10Speaker 1: get more picks. But for me, this is all about
- 18:13Speaker 1: Justin Fields. Like we list a bunch of positions, but
- 18:16Speaker 1: how do we support him and get the talent around
- 18:19Speaker 1: him so he does not have to be a one
- 18:21Speaker 1: man show. When I looked at that offense last year
- 18:23Speaker 1: in Justin Fields, maybe they had the least amount of
- 18:27Speaker 1: talent around Justin Fields, which made him have to win
- 18:30Speaker 1: every game on his own. So when you put talent
- 18:33Speaker 1: around him, it just makes it easier. So Justin doesn't
- 18:37Speaker 1: have to make every play and he can just maximize
- 18:40Speaker 1: his potential of Okay, I'm not getting rushed every play.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't have to run out of here. We've got
- 18:44Speaker 1: a run game that I can rely on for play action.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I've got receivers who can bail me out and make plays.
- 18:49Speaker 1: So when they attack this free agency and draft period,
- 18:52Speaker 1: if Ryan Poles, it's all about how do we put
- 18:55Speaker 1: talent around Justin Fields so that he can be the
- 18:58Speaker 1: best version of himself and see what we have. Of course,
- 19:01Speaker 1: other positions on the defensive side of the ball they
- 19:03Speaker 1: need to improve as well, But it's all about justin
- 19:05Speaker 1: field and making because I see the Pro Bowl talent
- 19:08Speaker 1: in him. I believe in him coming out. He saw
- 19:10Speaker 1: flashes last year. So let's get this young man right now.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Let's go elsewhere in the division. In the Detroit Lions,
- 19:17Speaker 1: Jeff a team that was in the top five in
- 19:19Speaker 1: offense for significant stretches of the season, at one point
- 19:23Speaker 1: had the number one scoring offense in the entire NFL.
- 19:26Speaker 1: What did they do in free agency this year? Well,
- 19:29Speaker 1: if they played better defense, might have been the playoffs
- 19:31Speaker 1: because that was the big issue they had all year.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And you look at the back end of that defense,
- 19:35Speaker 1: that's what they need to make some moves. They don't
- 19:37Speaker 1: have as much salary cap space as the Bears have
- 19:39Speaker 1: there around the twenty two million mark. But again, you
- 19:42Speaker 1: look at the safety market with guys like Jesse Bates,
- 19:45Speaker 1: kinds like C. J. Gardner, Johnson, even a Jordan Ployer,
- 19:49Speaker 1: that would make sense for them. At corner. You're talking
- 19:51Speaker 1: about Jamal Dean, You're talking about James brad Berry. I
- 19:54Speaker 1: wrote my column that a sexy trade could be Jayla
- 19:57Speaker 1: Ramsey Brad Holmes, the Lion Genrod manager with the Rams,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and no Kid and Ramsey really well it be it
- 20:03Speaker 1: would go against what they want to do because they're
- 20:05Speaker 1: we're draft oriented, but again, I mean more playmakers on
- 20:08Speaker 1: that backg in to make this team more complete, Martin.
- 20:14Speaker 1: We'll have an opportunity to see just what they do
- 20:16Speaker 1: coming up here with free agency starting free agency Frienzy
- 20:19Speaker 1: kicking off here on NFL Network on Sunday thanks to
- 20:22Speaker 1: jeffre Chidia and Mark Ross so that the Lions and
- 20:25Speaker 1: the Bears also We got a new play caller in Dallas.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy says he's in the shower thinking of calling
- 20:34Speaker 1: plays in the final drive of the Super Bowl. What's
- 20:37Speaker 1: he having store for twenty twenty three? How Boys offense
- 20:41Speaker 1: looked like that's coming up next? Dance Dak Prescott missed
- 20:52Speaker 1: a huge chunk of twenty twenty two, but still was
- 20:54Speaker 1: able to come back and throw twenty three touchdowns for
- 20:57Speaker 1: the Cowboys in the top five passing offense yet again
- 21:00Speaker 1: twenty one and twelve in three seasons. With Mike McCarthy
- 21:04Speaker 1: now is the head coach, he will now have Mike
- 21:06Speaker 1: McCarthy calling the plays after the departure of Kellen Moore.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Dak's thoughts on that this week. Oh God, that's that's
- 21:14Speaker 1: excited for for what's next. Always optimistic, No, No, Mike's
- 21:18Speaker 1: history and calling the plays has had a lot of success,
- 21:21Speaker 1: So excited for that. I know he's excited to get
- 21:23Speaker 1: back into it, to dive into it, to be able
- 21:27Speaker 1: to call the plays and just to be so engaged
- 21:29Speaker 1: and so um. It's a change, but it's gonna be
- 21:31Speaker 1: good back now with Mark Rawson, Brian Balden or Mark.
- 21:35Speaker 1: So Mike McCarthy's calling the plays. Now, how much does
- 21:39Speaker 1: that change the offense in Dallas? You know, I don't
- 21:42Speaker 1: think it'll change drastically. You know, Mike McCarthy has been
- 21:46Speaker 1: a part of that. Kelly Moore was the offensive coordinator,
- 21:48Speaker 1: but Mike McCarthy definitely had his blueprints on it and
- 21:51Speaker 1: is advising on what was going on with with the offense,
- 21:55Speaker 1: which is lost in them losing Kelly Moore eight or
- 21:58Speaker 1: fourth in scoring this year and first lastly, So this
- 22:02Speaker 1: is a prolific offense in the regular season. So it's
- 22:05Speaker 1: not as if they were a boor offense and you're
- 22:07Speaker 1: switching coordinators or play callers that make it make it better.
- 22:12Speaker 1: They were a prolific offense. What's really important for me
- 22:15Speaker 1: is that Mike McCarty has to get Dak Prescott better
- 22:18Speaker 1: in key situations, in big games and in the playoff games.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And the Cowboys really have to find another playmaker outside
- 22:25Speaker 1: of CD Lamb in the pass game. That's what really
- 22:28Speaker 1: what happened to them at the end of the season
- 22:30Speaker 1: when they lost, was they didn't have answers outside of
- 22:33Speaker 1: CD Lamb and Dak Prescott once again unfortunately did not
- 22:36Speaker 1: step his game up to raise the level of everyone else.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So yes, on the outside, I'm looking at it as look,
- 22:42Speaker 1: if Mike McCarthy says this might be my last shot here,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I'm going to take it all on my own hands,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and I'm going to run the show because this is
- 22:50Speaker 1: all on my hands now. Baldy as opposed to it
- 22:52Speaker 1: really being a super drastic change in what's going on there,
- 22:57Speaker 1: I don't know if this is a drastic change or not, Mark,
- 23:00Speaker 1: But I mean, in Mike's words, from Mike's mouth, he
- 23:03Speaker 1: said he wants to run the ball more, and if
- 23:06Speaker 1: they can, it certainly takes the load off of what
- 23:10Speaker 1: Dak has to do. And it's interesting, Mark, when I
- 23:12Speaker 1: go back and I just review the season of the
- 23:15Speaker 1: Cowboys when Cooper Rush took over Week two against the Bengals,
- 23:18Speaker 1: and for the next five weeks, all the way up
- 23:20Speaker 1: until the Laws against Eagles where they were four and one,
- 23:23Speaker 1: they were an absolutely even fifty fifty run pass offense.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And you know at that time in those five games,
- 23:31Speaker 1: Cooper Rush was sacked three times, so the sacks were down,
- 23:34Speaker 1: the production was up, and the protection of the quarterback
- 23:38Speaker 1: was up, and all those things could help Dak. Now,
- 23:40Speaker 1: I don't expect them to be a fifty fifty run
- 23:43Speaker 1: pass team. I don't. Almost nobody is in this league anymore.
- 23:46Speaker 1: But if Mike says I'm going to run the ball more,
- 23:49Speaker 1: there's gonna be a thirty percent change in this offense.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I think we might see it a little bit, Mark Baby,
- 23:55Speaker 1: in those bigger games when you get to January where
- 23:57Speaker 1: Dak has to step it up, Like you said, Grandson
- 24:01Speaker 1: to be saying how things are going to go. Mark,
- 24:03Speaker 1: We're also will be back with you shortly, Brian. Stick
- 24:06Speaker 1: around because we're going to talk another NFC East quarterback,
- 24:09Speaker 1: a guy who just got paid this week, Daniel Jones
- 24:12Speaker 1: signed a contract four years could be worth up to
- 24:15Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty million dollars on Mike Garofolo reported
- 24:17Speaker 1: today it could be worth even more if he hits
- 24:20Speaker 1: all of those incentives over the course of those four years,
- 24:23Speaker 1: with ninety four million dollars impossible. I guarantees as he
- 24:27Speaker 1: signed that contract and after that. The day after he
- 24:31Speaker 1: signed that deal, with Daniel Jones meeting with the media
- 24:33Speaker 1: acknowledging his responsibility. You know, I've always felt that responsibility,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and um, you know, playing this position, you know, especially
- 24:44Speaker 1: for a team like the like the New York Giants
- 24:46Speaker 1: in the city, you know, you have that responsibility. And
- 24:49Speaker 1: I take that very seriously and it certainly doesn't change
- 24:53Speaker 1: and um yeah, I certainly do feel that, and it's
- 24:57Speaker 1: my goal to earn that, you know, every day, and
- 25:00Speaker 1: you know, in the off season while we're preparing for
- 25:02Speaker 1: the season, and then when we get to the season,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you know, doing my best and preparing this team to
- 25:09Speaker 1: win games and to me to put us in a
- 25:12Speaker 1: position to do that. So yeah, I take their responsibility
- 25:15Speaker 1: very seriously. Jete Batista back with us along with Brian
- 25:18Speaker 1: Balldecker Judy. We heard Daniel Jones talk about that responsibility.
- 25:22Speaker 1: A lot of that responsibility has included, through a large
- 25:24Speaker 1: portuit of his career, handing the ball off to say
- 25:27Speaker 1: Quon Barkley. And now say Quon's back back on this
- 25:29Speaker 1: franchise tag. It looks like they will get a chance
- 25:31Speaker 1: to do just that. Yeah, And actually, Daniel Jones spent
- 25:35Speaker 1: some time on that zoom talking about how important sa
- 25:37Speaker 1: Quon Barkley is to him, not as not just as
- 25:40Speaker 1: a teammate, but also just as a personal friend, and
- 25:43Speaker 1: how happy he was that they would be together going forward.
- 25:47Speaker 1: As for the Giants point of view, they would like
- 25:49Speaker 1: to get sa Quon under a multi year deal. He
- 25:53Speaker 1: is on the franchise tag. They had had talks during
- 25:56Speaker 1: the season that didn't really go anywhere. The feeling at
- 25:59Speaker 1: that time was that the Giants were probably offering something
- 26:03Speaker 1: a fall of twelve million dollars year and that was
- 26:06Speaker 1: turned down. So we'll see where they go from here.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But certainly the intention of the Giants is to keep
- 26:12Speaker 1: talking to Saquon Barkley. Joe Shane said on his zoom
- 26:15Speaker 1: this morning that that's what he was headed to do next,
- 26:18Speaker 1: was to talk to se Quon. They want to keep
- 26:20Speaker 1: him around, not just for what he can contribute on
- 26:23Speaker 1: the field, but for what he contributes in the locker room.
- 26:26Speaker 1: He is very much one of the faces of this
- 26:28Speaker 1: franchise and very valued by upper management of the New
- 26:32Speaker 1: York Giants, and then they can turn their attention. Part
- 26:35Speaker 1: of why they want to get sa Quan done also
- 26:37Speaker 1: is to reduce his salary cap hit for this year,
- 26:40Speaker 1: because then they can turn their attention to free agency,
- 26:42Speaker 1: which Joe Shane said they have not been able to
- 26:44Speaker 1: spend a whole lot of time on, and they are
- 26:46Speaker 1: going to turn their attention that way in the next
- 26:48Speaker 1: few hours. Today we'll leave He's Rutherford and go over
- 26:51Speaker 1: to Floren Park where they were physically zooming to California
- 26:54Speaker 1: to meet with Aaron Rodgers and those discussions obviously a
- 26:59Speaker 1: big part of their off season. How much attention in
- 27:01Speaker 1: this offseason is directly going to Aaron Rodgers from the
- 27:04Speaker 1: folks in New Jersey. Yeah, they're in a holding pattern
- 27:08Speaker 1: like pretty much everybody else in the NFL. They are
- 27:11Speaker 1: waiting for Aaron Rodgers decision. It is clear that he
- 27:15Speaker 1: is their number one choice. Their plan B was Derek Carr,
- 27:19Speaker 1: so he's already out of the picture, but it is
- 27:21Speaker 1: all in on Plan A for Aaron Rodgers, and until then,
- 27:25Speaker 1: the Jets are really in a holding pattern. They have
- 27:28Speaker 1: to wait for this decision. And certainly, if they don't
- 27:31Speaker 1: land Aaron Rodgers, they're going to have to turn to
- 27:33Speaker 1: Plan C and D, because the number one priority of
- 27:36Speaker 1: the offseason for the New York Jets is to get
- 27:39Speaker 1: a vetteran quarterback in there. You put up that chart
- 27:41Speaker 1: before about the difference between Aaron Rodgers performance and the
- 27:45Speaker 1: performance of Jets quarterbacks in recent years, and it ain't pretty.
- 27:49Speaker 1: They need to land somebody. If it's not Aaron Rodgers,
- 27:52Speaker 1: they need to land somebody who is certainly better than
- 27:55Speaker 1: what they've had in recent years. You know, Judy, when
- 27:59Speaker 1: the Jets released Mike Lafleur, their offensive coordinator last year
- 28:03Speaker 1: and they hired Nathaniel Hackett, you just wonder if part
- 28:07Speaker 1: of the hiring of Nathaniel Hackett was his association and
- 28:12Speaker 1: his working relationship with Aaron Rodgers, because I gotta believe
- 28:16Speaker 1: when they all meet or yesterday today, that Nathaniel Hackett
- 28:20Speaker 1: is going to be prominently involved in the discussions. Joe
- 28:24Speaker 1: Douglas can talk to Aaron Rodgers about McKay Beckton and
- 28:27Speaker 1: Olie Vera Tucker and what they're gonna do with the
- 28:29Speaker 1: thirteenth pick, and they're gonna mild a massive wall in
- 28:32Speaker 1: front of Aaron Rodgers to protect him. And I'm sure
- 28:35Speaker 1: Robert Salos talking about Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore, Breece Hall
- 28:38Speaker 1: and all the young talent and all. By the way,
- 28:40Speaker 1: on the other side of the ball is Sauce Gardner,
- 28:42Speaker 1: the defensive rookie of the year. You get to go
- 28:44Speaker 1: against him every day. I can imagine this. Nathaniel Hackett
- 28:48Speaker 1: signing can't hurt these discussions with Aaron Rodgers in trying
- 28:54Speaker 1: to get him to come to be the quarterback for
- 28:57Speaker 1: the New York Jets this year. I gotta believe that
- 28:58Speaker 1: that is enticing. As much as Aaron talked about how
- 29:02Speaker 1: important Nathaniel was and his in his progress in Green
- 29:07Speaker 1: Bay and part of his back to back MVP performances,
- 29:10Speaker 1: that he had yeah able to facilitate the relationship there
- 29:13Speaker 1: with it at the time a new head coach, and
- 29:16Speaker 1: perhaps Nathaniel Hacker could serve that same role again if
- 29:18Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers decide he does want to play football here
- 29:22Speaker 1: in the twenty twenty three season, thanks to Jude Bautista
- 29:24Speaker 1: and Brian Baldinger examining that situation. Let's get to another
- 29:28Speaker 1: free agent. It is the safety Jesse Bates who is
- 29:31Speaker 1: set to become an unrestricted free agents such a huge
- 29:34Speaker 1: part of these back to back postseason runs by the
- 29:38Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals, the question is just how much is he
- 29:44Speaker 1: set to get and what kind of impact might it
- 29:46Speaker 1: have on the Cincinnati Bengals. To discuss this, let's bring
- 29:49Speaker 1: in James Palmer and get back with Jeffrey Chidia. James,
- 29:52Speaker 1: you first, how big of a loss would it be
- 29:55Speaker 1: if there's no Jesse Bates? And since well, I would
- 30:00Speaker 1: go back to what the face of the franchise said
- 30:02Speaker 1: last offseason and Joe Burrows saying, you cannot a price
- 30:05Speaker 1: tag on what Jesse Bates does for our locker room.
- 30:08Speaker 1: He is the one who built all of this. That's
- 30:11Speaker 1: pretty high praise from Joe Burrow. Now, the last two
- 30:13Speaker 1: seasons they've been unable to get a contract extension done.
- 30:17Speaker 1: They've had multiple negotiations, ended up tagging him last year,
- 30:20Speaker 1: and if you remember last offseason, their first round pick
- 30:23Speaker 1: on Das Hill, a safety. So it looks like the
- 30:26Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals could sense that this was on the horizon,
- 30:29Speaker 1: But Jeff, the interesting part is what this offense will
- 30:32Speaker 1: look the defense will look like without Jesse Bates. Because
- 30:35Speaker 1: of the football IQ, he has the ability for Luanna Remote,
- 30:38Speaker 1: their defensive coordinator, to change things week to week, add
- 30:41Speaker 1: different things, change things within a game, change things within
- 30:45Speaker 1: a play. A lot of that funnels through the IQ
- 30:48Speaker 1: in the play of Jesse Bates leading this defense along
- 30:50Speaker 1: with his running mate in Vaughan Bell, who's also a
- 30:54Speaker 1: free agent. So it may look with the loss of
- 30:56Speaker 1: Jesse Bates, you try to bring back Vaughan Bell Jeff
- 30:59Speaker 1: on the backside of that defense, because you're going to
- 31:01Speaker 1: be pretty young back there in the secondary, and you
- 31:04Speaker 1: know you have a window right now. It's going to
- 31:06Speaker 1: be interesting to see the loss of him and potentially
- 31:09Speaker 1: bon Bell as well, could change what Lou in a
- 31:11Speaker 1: Room can do, which makes him so special as a
- 31:13Speaker 1: defensive coordinating. Yeah, it's a huge challenge for the Bengals
- 31:16Speaker 1: and for Lou and Room what they lose both those guys.
- 31:19Speaker 1: But the Bengals also might lose Jermaine Pratt, a really
- 31:22Speaker 1: talented linebacker the middle of their defense to Eli Apple
- 31:25Speaker 1: at corner he is a free agent. They still have
- 31:28Speaker 1: to work out some things with Logan Wilson with an extension.
- 31:31Speaker 1: He's up for that now, so he's still gonna be around,
- 31:33Speaker 1: but they got to pay him big money. These our
- 31:35Speaker 1: first world problem now for the Bengals, James and this
- 31:38Speaker 1: is a defense was really underrated last year. You know,
- 31:40Speaker 1: people you talk about Bond Bell and Jesse Bates, one
- 31:43Speaker 1: of the best safety tammas in the league. But this
- 31:45Speaker 1: defense got it done. They ran sixth in the NFL
- 31:48Speaker 1: and points allowed. They were a big reason for this
- 31:50Speaker 1: team's success over the last two seasons. But they lose
- 31:53Speaker 1: these kind of players, you know, it's gonna be tough
- 31:55Speaker 1: on them. In Duke Tobin their player. Of course, no
- 31:57Speaker 1: director talked about that at the combine, saying, we want
- 32:00Speaker 1: to keep these guys together. This is a great group,
- 32:02Speaker 1: a great culture. We know these guys are a big
- 32:04Speaker 1: part of what we've been able to do for the
- 32:06Speaker 1: last couple of years. Yeah, they got some of these
- 32:09Speaker 1: guys in a myriad of different ways. They do have
- 32:11Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three Draft coming up pretty soon. Picks
- 32:14Speaker 1: twenty eight, sixty and ninety two in those first three
- 32:18Speaker 1: rounds for the Bengals. What are we expecting to try
- 32:20Speaker 1: to do with those picks, James. It's a different approach
- 32:23Speaker 1: this offseason, Patrick, compared to last year when you saw
- 32:26Speaker 1: them making those big splashes right at the start of
- 32:28Speaker 1: free agency to revamp that offensive line. You don't think
- 32:30Speaker 1: you're really going to see that at the front end
- 32:32Speaker 1: of free agency with that Joe Burrow contract on the
- 32:35Speaker 1: horizon and where things stand as an organization heading into
- 32:37Speaker 1: this season. When you look at the draft, we showed
- 32:40Speaker 1: some of the needs down there early and those are
- 32:42Speaker 1: the ones I'm looking at. At twenty eight, they look
- 32:44Speaker 1: at the offensive line. Remember they had three Jeff, you
- 32:47Speaker 1: and I were sitting next to each other at the game.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Three guys out on that offensive line because of injury,
