- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I am your host, Scott Brady, and I'm here with
- 0:08Speaker 2: my co host Matt Scott.
- 0:10Speaker 3: I am alive and well, yes.
- 0:11Speaker 2: And we are here with one of the most accomplished
- 0:14Speaker 2: automotive journalists, global Traveler, Adventure and now victor of the
- 0:20Speaker 2: land Rover Trek Challenge for twenty twenty one, Brian Door.
- 0:25Speaker 2: So thanks Brian for being on the podcast. For those
- 0:27Speaker 2: that are listening, we are going to have a full
- 0:29Speaker 2: featured podcast on Brian and his life and his accomplishments
- 0:33Speaker 2: that you're going to hear at a later date, But
- 0:35Speaker 2: for today, we're going to focus on the Overland Expo
- 0:38Speaker 2: and then the Trek Challenge that just happened. I was
- 0:40Speaker 2: also fortunate fortunate to be able to participate in that
- 0:43Speaker 2: event as well. But let's start off by kind of
- 0:46Speaker 2: riffing on the Overland Expo. Matt, what was the thing
- 0:49Speaker 2: that you were like, this was really this felt really
- 0:51Speaker 2: good about this expo over.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The next po is an interesting one. We've all been
- 0:55Speaker 1: going for a long time. In my first Overland Export
- 0:57Speaker 1: forever years ago, you've been going even longer than that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I mean, you helped start the first one a year
- 1:03Speaker 1: and Prescott and now a word from one of the
- 1:05Speaker 1: supporters of our podcast, red Arc at Overland Journal. We
- 1:09Speaker 1: go off grid every chance we get, from the most
- 1:11Speaker 1: technical trails to crossing continents. It's no match for red
- 1:15Speaker 1: arcs toe pro Elite. This brake controller has been torture
- 1:18Speaker 1: tested in the toughest place on the planet, the Australian Outback.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Easy to install, its dash mount remote head makes for
- 1:25Speaker 1: quick calibration and ensures you won't be hitting your knees.
- 1:28Speaker 1: You can seamlessly switch between proportional for the highway and
- 1:31Speaker 1: user controlled for the steepest, most rugged trails out there.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You may not trust the terrain you're on, but you
- 1:36Speaker 1: can always trust red arcs toe pro elite toe with
- 1:39Speaker 1: confidence by visiting red Arc Electronics dot Com.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Overland Next.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Most changed as the industry has over the years. I
- 1:46Speaker 1: mean one of the thing sure I've always struggled with
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the overland industries. I kind of got into it
- 1:51Speaker 1: because I wanted to travel, Like traveling was the main goal.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Vehicles were the tool that allowed it to happen.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And I think this year it became really apparent that
- 2:00Speaker 1: that industry has definitely taken a you know, a backstep
- 2:04Speaker 1: it is. It is more of a consumer show.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I do think that the over and Expo team does
- 2:11Speaker 1: still provide opportunities for training and that kind of stuff,
- 2:14Speaker 1: which is admirable. But yeah, they care about it, Yeah
- 2:16Speaker 1: they care about it, but people are there to buy stuff.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So that was really really apparent to me. Yeah, It's
- 2:22Speaker 1: like it had fully jumped the shark this year. It
- 2:24Speaker 1: had fully jumped this year to where I'm kind of like,
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know, I'm not necessarily you know, I didn't even
- 2:30Speaker 1: Jonathan Hanson and I waved each other like five times,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and we didn't even Like everybody that's kind of been
- 2:35Speaker 1: around the industry is so busy that that community is
- 2:38Speaker 1: maybe not there for the event.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It was work this year. It was consumer trade show now,
- 2:42Speaker 3: so any of us that are in the industry, it's
- 2:44Speaker 3: work getting after it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It felt like it.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I mean, we recorded seven podcasts, we recorded two full
- 2:50Speaker 2: Overland Expo daily video I mean twenty minute video pieces.
- 2:54Speaker 2: We had fourteen people there. I mean, it was a
- 2:57Speaker 2: like compared to the first Overland Expo, which I kind
- 3:00Speaker 2: of left for my garage and drove ten minutes to
- 3:03Speaker 2: the fairgrounds here in Prescott, but.
- 3:04Speaker 3: There's thirty thousand consumers.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's insane that they're they're trying to give their
- 3:09Speaker 1: claiming showed up that there.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's their claim number that.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah, they sold out on day that they told us
- 3:15Speaker 1: during one of the podcasts we were recorded, and there's
- 3:18Speaker 1: what like maybe fifty kind of old guard industry left
- 3:22Speaker 1: that were all at, you know, the Equipped Party.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I think it's cool that the Quick Party is still going.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm grateful for Paul and for that. Yeah, there
- 3:28Speaker 1: was there wasn't that much new stuff at the show
- 3:30Speaker 1: this year, but I guess with the pandemic, it's so
- 3:33Speaker 1: hard to get materials, it's so hard to piece things
- 3:37Speaker 1: together that.
- 3:38Speaker 3: It was about sixteen ish new products. I went to
- 3:42Speaker 3: every vendor and I got a list, and I'm building
- 3:44Speaker 3: some content for a number of websites.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Well, i'd love to hear what you thought, Brian of
- 3:49Speaker 2: like the new products. One of them that stood out
- 3:51Speaker 2: to me, which I'm not a huge fan of the
- 3:54Speaker 2: brand name, but skinny Guy Campers is a different approach.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And it's not like it's a bad name, it's just like,
- 4:00Speaker 2: how do you scale that to a broad audience.
- 4:02Speaker 3: If you're not a skinny guy.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, what happens if he sells it? What
- 4:06Speaker 1: happens if he sells it to somebody who's not a
- 4:08Speaker 1: skinny guy.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I don't know the way it folds out. And the
- 4:12Speaker 3: cantilever part is rated up to six hundred pounds. You
- 4:14Speaker 3: don't have to be a skinny guy to enjoy the
- 4:15Speaker 3: skinny camper.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And I love the fact that it's cab height. It's
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's a very interesting concept. I'm not suggesting that it's
- 4:22Speaker 2: something that I would that would be first on my list,
- 4:24Speaker 2: but I like the fact that it was different.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's really cool. But at the center of gravity is
- 4:28Speaker 3: really high. It is for a lot or the batteries,
- 4:30Speaker 3: everything are way higher than you'd normally.
- 4:33Speaker 1: The side entry is an interesting thing because it does
- 4:35Speaker 1: it does you know? I have one of those truck
- 4:38Speaker 1: camper things of an at summit by design, you you
- 4:41Speaker 1: get in through the tailgate.
- 4:43Speaker 3: It's a totally different setup. So just to you guys
- 4:45Speaker 3: out there that haven't seen this before, the Skinny Guy
- 4:47Speaker 3: camper is a truck topper type camper, but it's an
- 4:51Speaker 3: entire camper system, not just a topper it's a whole module.
- 4:54Speaker 3: It doesn't utilize the entire truck beed. You can still
- 4:56Speaker 3: put a drawer system under it to access through the
- 4:59Speaker 3: rear tailgate. The camper flips open to the back and
- 5:01Speaker 3: candle leads over the back. The entire top is a tent.
- 5:04Speaker 3: There's no hard top to it, and you enter from
- 5:06Speaker 3: the side and step into essentially like a basin. That
- 5:09Speaker 3: is a full camper. So Dinette stove, all that, toilet, shower,
- 5:14Speaker 3: all of it, all of it crazy.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so's I think it's actually for some people it
- 5:18Speaker 2: is going to be a winner. Because you have a
- 5:21Speaker 2: garage and you're right at your limits of height, or
- 5:24Speaker 2: if you go and you work downtown and you're parking
- 5:27Speaker 2: in a parking garage, or if you travel in the
- 5:29Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest on the trails and they're super tight or whatever.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I like the fact that it was. It was different.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It was kind of out of the box. Thinking what
- 5:36Speaker 2: did you find, Brian, that you thought was different? Out
- 5:38Speaker 2: of the box, thinking that that maybe surprised you a little.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Bit, and out of the box is tough. I don't
- 5:43Speaker 3: know there was anything that jumped out of me. That
- 5:45Speaker 3: the one thing I think this industry. A lot of
- 5:48Speaker 3: it is improving on all we already have. That's the thing, right,
- 5:50Speaker 3: So evolutionary or micro adjustments up and somebody kind of
- 5:54Speaker 3: takes another idea and goes with it. So the one
- 5:56Speaker 3: that I saw that kind of stood out as like
- 5:58Speaker 3: a kind of maybe a big leap. I haven't used
- 6:00Speaker 3: it yet, so I don't want to make judgment. But
- 6:02Speaker 3: the i Camper Disco Series, yeah, it was interesting. So
- 6:05Speaker 3: it's essentially most of us know about the Scottle is
- 6:07Speaker 3: that you got to have one as an Overlander, you
- 6:10Speaker 3: got to have a Scott Alder. It's a fun communal
- 6:13Speaker 3: cook system made basically from a plowdisc. So it's not
- 6:16Speaker 3: anything new. They've been doing this all over the world
- 6:18Speaker 3: for years, but it's a commercialized product here in the US,
- 6:21Speaker 3: well made. Jerry and the Tembo test crew are great people.
- 6:25Speaker 3: They got some cool new accessories for theirs this year,
- 6:27Speaker 3: or the table and stuff. But the i Caamper Disco
- 6:29Speaker 3: series is essentially the same thing, but you can also
- 6:32Speaker 3: use it like a normal stove with a pot. You
- 6:34Speaker 3: can hang it over a fire, use the tripod to
- 6:37Speaker 3: do cast iron cooking. It has a threaded insert on
- 6:40Speaker 3: the top, so you can use the tripod as a
- 6:41Speaker 3: camera tripod. Pretty versatile piece of equipment for what it is.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's five hundred bucks, so it's not cheap. And I
- 6:49Speaker 3: don't think it's going to be very light either. I
- 6:50Speaker 3: didn't get a chance to like carry.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But I did carry the tripod super light. The tripod
- 6:55Speaker 1: is it's pretty stout.
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's pretty and I think it's because of the dement
- 7:00Speaker 2: of the legs, you know, you know, it's like a
- 7:02Speaker 2: square in a two inch square, Yeah, exactly. The disc
- 7:04Speaker 2: is fairly heavy, so I think, and each each piece
- 7:07Speaker 2: goes in its own bag, so I thought was kind
- 7:10Speaker 2: of interesting. I think if you travel as a family
- 7:12Speaker 2: or you have travel in a group, it's probably a
- 7:14Speaker 2: great choice for me, you know, just to give me
- 7:17Speaker 2: a single burner stove and it's just a great solution.
- 7:20Speaker 2: But you can see why it would work really well
- 7:22Speaker 2: in a group or with a family setting.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Another thing that I saw that was really cool was
- 7:26Speaker 3: a Rubicon EP. I'm not familiar with their coming in
- 7:29Speaker 3: the past, but actually I've covered them before. They make
- 7:31Speaker 3: a hitch receiver that holds a rooftop tent vertically and
- 7:35Speaker 3: pivots it down behind the vehicle. It's not on your roof.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It hangs off the rear hitch of the vehicle and
- 7:39Speaker 3: then sets up from that interesting concept.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It's been around for around for a while.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, that has Yeah, but their new product is called
- 7:45Speaker 3: the Corral and it's a bike rack for five mountain
- 7:48Speaker 3: bikes off the back on a toe hitch. Not a
- 7:50Speaker 3: new concept, totally been done by a million people. But
- 7:53Speaker 3: their's is like really cool, high end intricate a metalwork,
- 7:57Speaker 3: all aluminum powder coated. They had like orange brack gets
- 8:00Speaker 3: there were like kind of three dimensional with like triangles
- 8:02Speaker 3: cut out, just really nice and it nothing touches the
- 8:06Speaker 3: rack besides the tires, so you're not going to get
- 8:08Speaker 3: any scratches on your thirteen thousand dollars downhill bike or whatever.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But they're eighteen hundred bucks up pricey bike rack.
- 8:14Speaker 1: When you checked it, how about rattling? Did it seem
- 8:16Speaker 1: like it was pretty well?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Really well the mechanism that they have that this' got
- 8:21Speaker 3: this camming mechanism with a latch that's really really nice
- 8:25Speaker 3: and I think well thought out, Like that's that's where
- 8:27Speaker 3: it wins probably is that mechanism for controlling the bikes
- 8:31Speaker 3: they're not swam all over the place, and like so,
- 8:33Speaker 3: I think that's why you pay the money to buy
- 8:35Speaker 3: that thing.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Another thing I saw that I really liked. I did
- 8:38Speaker 1: see it at Mountain West in Colorado is the new
- 8:41Speaker 1: dematic water system.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I thought that was pretty clever. They call a guy
- 8:44Speaker 3: that designed it, who oh and killed it all the
- 8:46Speaker 3: thing for sure.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and I had I did an interview with him,
- 8:50Speaker 2: really thoughtful engineer, and he really spent a lot of
- 8:53Speaker 2: time trying to figure out how do people need to
- 8:55Speaker 2: interact with water? And it comes in at eleven liters.
- 8:58Speaker 2: You can kind of over fill it a little bit
- 9:00Speaker 2: slightly higher than that, a big fill port that can
- 9:03Speaker 2: also be a cleaning port, so you can actually fit
- 9:05Speaker 2: a hand down in there and clean out the inside.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And then they've got this magnetic mounted basically faucet, which
- 9:11Speaker 2: so for the scout camper that I use, they set
- 9:14Speaker 2: it up with a lifesaver jerry can on its side
- 9:17Speaker 2: and it just leaks it just like I've used lifesavers
- 9:19Speaker 2: a bunch and I've never had them leak because I
- 9:21Speaker 2: always have them standing up.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But on its side, it leaks. It leaks out of
- 9:25Speaker 1: the pressure thing. Yes, yeah, yeah, mine kind of somehow
- 9:28Speaker 1: leaks out of every everywhere, which they don't do when
- 9:30Speaker 1: they're standing up, so that it's an important exception of mind.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Yeah, important distinction. But I think that this demetic system
- 9:39Speaker 2: where you can just have all these little eleven liter
- 9:41Speaker 2: maybe three or four of them that you carry along
- 9:43Speaker 2: on a trip, depending on the length, maybe a few more.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I thought it was really clever. I mean, what did
- 9:48Speaker 2: you think of that, Brian? Is really well built, nicely.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Functionality of that is cool, Like that's that's one of
- 9:53Speaker 3: the only products for my four wheel vehicle that I
- 9:57Speaker 3: saw at the show that I was like, I could
- 9:59Speaker 3: use that. That would fit in my GX, Like that'd
- 10:01Speaker 3: be pretty cool.
- 10:02Speaker 1: That's interesting that you say that, because that for me,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it was the one thing that like, where do I
- 10:06Speaker 1: give you my money? Because like, that's actually going to
- 10:08Speaker 1: solve a whole bunch of problems for me today. So,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and that was one of the few products that were
- 10:12Speaker 1: like that.
- 10:13Speaker 3: And as a battery operated pump system, that's the cool part.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So it as a hose and then like a separate
- 10:17Speaker 3: and you can it's a magnetic base on it. You
- 10:19Speaker 3: have super clever wherever you puck wherever you want, and
- 10:22Speaker 3: you can have it on its side or upright or
- 10:24Speaker 3: however it fits in your system. So I think that
- 10:26Speaker 3: might work on top of my fridge system totally GX
- 10:30Speaker 3: and have it like flowing water and.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You can kind of move it around, or you can
- 10:33Speaker 2: put it up high and use it as I mean,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm sure that they're going to come out of some
- 10:36Speaker 2: kind of shower solution, and I believe that on a
- 10:38Speaker 2: single charge it'll pump one hundred liters, so essentially eight
- 10:42Speaker 2: or nine it does.
- 10:44Speaker 3: It does, so it's super way lighter than I thought
- 10:47Speaker 3: it would be.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's and it's tap start, so if you're
- 10:50Speaker 2: like in the day of COVID and other things, like
- 10:53Speaker 2: if you're just trying to like or you just use
- 10:54Speaker 2: your nature's head or whatever, and you could just like
- 10:56Speaker 2: tap it with your elbow and and it starts pumping.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It'll shut off automatically at a minute, so that it
- 11:02Speaker 1: just in case it gets accidentally bumped, it won't pump
- 11:05Speaker 1: out all your water. So there was a bunch of
- 11:07Speaker 1: really thoughtful pieces around that. I mean, it's Dometic is
- 11:10Speaker 1: a big company. I have to give them credit for
- 11:13Speaker 1: somehow making really great products, like products that you normally
- 11:17Speaker 1: see from small spoke manufacturers, like their new fridges, their
- 11:21Speaker 1: new CFX line of fridges are well. I mean, this
- 11:23Speaker 1: is a I can drop this because it's coming out
- 11:26Speaker 1: and Overland Journal, but it won our Overline Journal test
- 11:28Speaker 1: the first time. It's a country mile yeah, and it's
- 11:30Speaker 1: first time Nationaluna hasn't won. So really good products, so
- 11:35Speaker 1: congrats to Dometic on that for sure. I thought that
- 11:38Speaker 1: at over on a Terra camper was pretty cool. Yep,
- 11:41Speaker 1: you know, it's nice to see. I'm a big fan
- 11:44Speaker 1: of hard sided campers. They have a lot of advantage
- 11:46Speaker 1: advantages for four season travel, for just sleeping comfort, for
- 11:50Speaker 1: a lot of reasons.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Mario did a great job.
- 11:53Speaker 1: And my favorite thing was how the drawer, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: the drawers where you store your clothes, pull out to
- 11:58Speaker 1: become a larger bed surface.
- 12:00Speaker 3: That was very clear.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I thought that the sides, the angled sides, were a
- 12:04Speaker 1: little bit weird at first until Ryan, you and I
- 12:07Speaker 1: were talking about it last night and you said, well,
- 12:09Speaker 1: the footprint of where you stand where the cabinets aren't
- 12:12Speaker 1: means that you don't have to have the height there
- 12:14Speaker 1: and you get the additional aerodynamics.
- 12:15Speaker 3: So I just crawled around the camper all morning doing
- 12:18Speaker 3: a photo shoot on that truck and camper. And it
- 12:20Speaker 3: was interesting because I literally was up in the corners
- 12:22Speaker 3: and stuff, crawling around trying to get interior shots at
- 12:24Speaker 3: the camper. Yes, the sidewalls get in your way when
- 12:26Speaker 3: you're doing weird stuff like that, but functionally standing in
- 12:28Speaker 3: the middle or the way you're the way you should sleep,
- 12:31Speaker 3: totally not an issue like you would think it would be.
- 12:33Speaker 3: But it's even sitting in the dinet. I'm tall. I
- 12:35Speaker 3: had a huge torso, no issues whatsoever.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Super nice, and it makes it very strong. It makes
- 12:39Speaker 1: it extremely strong structure, which means that they can use
- 12:42Speaker 1: lighter materials. And then it also has it. We all
- 12:45Speaker 1: deal with it. When you're on the trails. Trails are
- 12:47Speaker 1: not level, So trails that are at an angle or
- 12:49Speaker 1: trees that are at an angle, you've gained all of that. Yeah,
- 12:52Speaker 1: additional currs a crap out of my earth.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Same with the scout. It's so straight up and down side.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And yeah, the only thing I did care for is
- 13:01Speaker 2: just the rhinal lined exterior. Yeah, they've got they've got
- 13:04Speaker 2: to do something about that. I mean that like, I'm
- 13:06Speaker 2: not trying to it's an amazing product. It's just that
- 13:09Speaker 2: does not.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Some people do like that. I just it works and
- 13:12Speaker 3: it's appropriate, but it just makes it feel cheap.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It makes it feel it's not, but it's it makes
- 13:18Speaker 1: it feel home.
- 13:19Speaker 3: It's home grown.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It's a real high quality product. But it also adds
- 13:23Speaker 1: quite a bit of weight.
- 13:24Speaker 2: So I know that those are they're fairly light spray
- 13:27Speaker 2: on products, but they do add a lot of weight.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Maybe it's even not a lot of weight. They add weight.
- 13:31Speaker 3: They add weight because you got to look at the
- 13:33Speaker 3: alternative to it, right, So the weight versus something that's
- 13:36Speaker 3: as strong that can protect the exterior of the camper
- 13:38Speaker 3: would probably be heavier. Honestly, maybe spray off care for
- 13:41Speaker 3: the durability and impact protection and sticks and everything else,
- 13:45Speaker 3: like aren't going to puncture that you'd have a hailstorm
- 13:46Speaker 3: like you guys had here in Pressingcat that destroyed buildings
- 13:48Speaker 3: and cars and everything.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Destroyed our buildings, Yeah, buildings in my nine to eleven.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And you're nine eleven and the hood of the Gladiator.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Although when Dave Sosa from Turn, who's the designer of
- 13:58Speaker 2: the camper, the structure of the campmper. When he was
- 14:01Speaker 2: in the middle of doing that, he brought me over
- 14:04Speaker 2: and held one of the panels and he said, and
- 14:06Speaker 2: he handed me a giant crescent wrench. He said, hit
- 14:08Speaker 2: it as hard as you want. And I mean I
- 14:10Speaker 2: wailed on this thing and it didn't even leave a mark.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So the panels themselves are very strong. And I know
- 14:16Speaker 2: that there are some proprietary components that are done in
- 14:19Speaker 2: the assembly of the panels, and maybe they're trying to
- 14:21Speaker 2: cover up with the lining, but just cover up those
- 14:23Speaker 2: parts and then make the other parts.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I think.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I think having a gloss finish, Yeah, I mean like
- 14:28Speaker 1: like looks more elegantly, it looks more high. On my
- 14:30Speaker 1: gladiator camper that's you know, the at Summit. One of
- 14:33Speaker 1: the best features about that is it looks integrated and
- 14:37Speaker 1: it looks premium because it looks premium matched.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yep.
- 14:41Speaker 1: If I put that same camper on my gladiator and
- 14:44Speaker 1: it was black rhino ligning, like my problem with it.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And it's not it's not it's not rhino lining, right,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but like it's something like it.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 1: When I see people who bedline their trucks, I generally
- 14:56Speaker 1: don't associate them with premium products.
- 14:58Speaker 3: And that's a shame because you said it is probably
- 15:00Speaker 3: the right way to do that from a functional standpoint,
- 15:03Speaker 3: but it just doesn't have the feel that like we
- 15:05Speaker 3: might want.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And I always it's that stuff is slightly porous, right,
- 15:08Speaker 1: so no, it's fully sealed, no like that. There's there's
- 15:11Speaker 1: little nooks and crannies to it, right, texture to it.
- 15:14Speaker 1: There's texture to it like on the Earth Rummer. It
- 15:16Speaker 1: has beadliner or whatever on the bottom half. I can
- 15:20Speaker 1: never get that clean. It is such a pain to
- 15:22Speaker 1: get clean. And since they also do it on the inside,
- 15:25Speaker 1: like you're not you can't powerwash the inside. But we're
- 15:28Speaker 1: getting into semantics here. I mean the campers. I mean
- 15:30Speaker 1: it's just a fantastic always.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we always try to give both sides of the coin,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and I think that that's that's our duty as journalists
- 15:37Speaker 2: to do that.
- 15:38Speaker 3: So the Terry camper was great and always and I
- 15:40Speaker 3: don't I don't mind that I do mine, but I
- 15:42Speaker 3: don't mind that that's not like it would mean to
- 15:44Speaker 3: buy it stopper. The only thing for me as an
- 15:47Speaker 3: adventure sport person is there's no ability to put a
- 15:49Speaker 3: roof rack on it. That's the dead stop for me,
- 15:52Speaker 3: but we did. I did talk to Mario about that,
- 15:54Speaker 3: and the answer is, especially with someone like myself that
- 15:56Speaker 3: has a third member to the family. Now you buy
- 15:58Speaker 3: the four door and then the cabs sticks out farther
- 16:01Speaker 3: than the overhang. Just put a rack on the front
- 16:03Speaker 3: of the cab and then you're good.
- 16:05Speaker 1: There is a way around that. Yeah, and on the
- 16:06Speaker 1: camper front too. I got to check out the new
- 16:09Speaker 1: V two of the GFC camper. I know they've been
- 16:13Speaker 1: out for a little bit, but this, you know, none
- 16:15Speaker 1: of us have been able to gutta shows or really
- 16:18Speaker 1: see stuff in person. Those are really cool. I mean,
- 16:20Speaker 1: it is a drastic depart I had one of the
- 16:21Speaker 1: first ones. It would have drastic departure.
- 16:25Speaker 3: To dig through the second one. I haven't saying, yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 3: well I don't.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I don't necessarily know how to explain this, but you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: they kind of build it as a square, but if
- 16:30Speaker 1: you look at the shape of most pick up beds,
- 16:33Speaker 1: they're not square. They have a slight curvature to them.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But there's a lot of thoughtful design features where like
- 16:38Speaker 1: the camper will be completely flat and it'll go down
- 16:41Speaker 1: to the bed, but then it will it will follow
- 16:44Speaker 1: that radius with a separate panel that comes out for
- 16:46Speaker 1: better ceiling. They're using a better hinge on their panels.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I was, you know, love ground, but was never really
- 16:54Speaker 1: a huge fan of that rubber seal they used. There
- 16:57Speaker 1: were there were theoretical advantages to it, but you know,
- 16:59Speaker 1: like it water didn't dripped down and stuff. It felt
- 17:02Speaker 1: like a super premium product that was really really well engineered.
- 17:06Speaker 3: There's a lot of scen C components, and it was
- 17:09Speaker 3: always had the good shiny look that's but this takes
- 17:12Speaker 3: it to another level. I look forward to seeing this
- 17:14Speaker 3: segment I haven't seen. Yeah, really cool.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They think you in their tents are made in America now,
- 17:18Speaker 1: so yeah, yeah, that was cool. You know, I think
- 17:22Speaker 1: I think if there's any like negative trend I saw
- 17:24Speaker 1: on the industry at this is there is there is
- 17:26Speaker 1: like a metric crap.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Ton of rebranded Alley Baba stuff.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I always have to like remind the consumer that, like,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, you are paying twenty two hundred dollars for
- 17:36Speaker 1: a three hundred dollars tent that somebody didn't even manufacture.
- 17:39Speaker 1: There are entire brands now that shall remain nameless, but
- 17:43Speaker 1: we're next to aev that specialize in just we're just
- 17:46Speaker 1: going to order this stuff. It's nothing that they've engineered,
- 17:49Speaker 1: nothing that they've manufactured. You know, they're they're pulling off
- 17:52Speaker 1: of the you know, innovations of the rest of the
- 17:55Speaker 1: industry and they're just they're just rebranding it and putting
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know, some kind of throwing over land on Ali
- 18:01Speaker 1: Baba crap.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Let's get back to some really cool stuff we saw
- 18:04Speaker 3: there that people are innovating. Right one, we're all motorcycle
- 18:06Speaker 3: guys as well. So one thing I thought that was
- 18:08Speaker 3: really cool was Moscow Moto had a new Woodsman pant.
- 18:12Speaker 3: It's so cool. It's their second generation of it, I
- 18:14Speaker 3: believe so, but the first gend sold amazing. So they
- 18:16Speaker 3: have an in boot and an overboot. I'm an overboot guy.
- 18:19Speaker 3: It's just I don't know. In boot seems a little
- 18:20Speaker 3: weird to me. But they're not inexpensive. They're three hundred
- 18:23Speaker 3: and three hundred free bucks depending on over or underboot.
- 18:26Speaker 3: But it's made of a shoulder fabric. It's completely waterproof
- 18:29Speaker 3: to just above the pocket legs and then above that
- 18:31Speaker 3: in the end on the back, so if you're going
- 18:33Speaker 3: through a puddle or something you're not gonna get wet,
- 18:35Speaker 3: but in the top, like where the top of your
- 18:37Speaker 3: legs are, it's completely breathable, so it's really good for
- 18:40Speaker 3: riding in a variety of temperatures. They look good. They're
- 18:42Speaker 3: four way stretch and it's a shoulder fabric that's completely
- 18:45Speaker 3: abrazing resist so even if you go down on pavement,
- 18:47Speaker 3: you're protected.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and you could see some of their new colorways
- 18:50Speaker 1: of like their jacket pant combo looked really really good.
- 18:54Speaker 2: They've got mid layers now Peter's doing Pete's doing a
- 18:57Speaker 2: great job. Him and his team are doing a great jobs.
- 19:00Speaker 3: All it's all about not looking like a spaceman. I
- 19:02Speaker 3: mean the gear that I wear right now, I look
- 19:04Speaker 3: like a spaceman. The Moscow stuff. You could wear those
- 19:07Speaker 3: woodsman's pants out of the outs of the bar after
- 19:09Speaker 3: riding normal shoes and people wouldn't flinch. I really like
- 19:12Speaker 3: their bags, you know, with most things. I ride with
- 19:15Speaker 3: all their bags, bags, clothing, most exhibition gear.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm on the Scott Ready hand me down program and
- 19:22Speaker 1: I've got to send his Moscow bags and I like them.
- 19:25Speaker 1: They're just really well thought totally.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I like the company.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I like what they stand for, like that they're innovating,
- 19:31Speaker 1: you know, I think they just have a unique look
- 19:33Speaker 1: on things. The direct to consumer thing. You know, there's
- 19:35Speaker 1: stuff is it's not cheap, but it's not as expensive
- 19:38Speaker 1: as it could be.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Any competitors product that's anywhere near as good is considerably
- 19:43Speaker 3: more money. Yeah, and they do it by selling it
- 19:45Speaker 3: direct and not through retailers. That's just the way that
- 19:47Speaker 3: they've decided to go. But they're a very core team
- 19:49Speaker 3: of people. Every single I don't know why you.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Sell through most power sports shops like they're they're incredibly depressing,
- 19:56Speaker 1: Like they just want to shove credit cards and financing
- 19:59Speaker 1: down your threat and sell you a UTV.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think you got to get away from the ones
- 20:03Speaker 3: in Arizona, buddy. Yeah, there are some good power sports
- 20:05Speaker 3: shops out there, but I know what you're saying.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I mean, like there's some good like dirt bike shops specifically,
- 20:09Speaker 1: but some great core motorcycle shops that the guys ride.
- 20:13Speaker 3: That's the thing, right, Like, Yeah, and they're not they're
- 20:16Speaker 3: not about selling your product. They're like, this is a lifestyle.
- 20:18Speaker 3: This is what it's all about. Like it's pretty cool.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Well, all of our motorcycle shops in Arizona are owned
- 20:22Speaker 1: by GoDaddy and they'll finance that perfect.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I mean that can buy a fancy or bike for
- 20:26Speaker 3: a lesson or for less money a month. Yeah. Anyway,
- 20:29Speaker 3: one other product that I saw that just is a
- 20:31Speaker 3: slight update that was cool that I've used a little
- 20:33Speaker 3: bit in the past and now I want to use
- 20:35Speaker 3: a lot more is the Onyx off road mapping system
- 20:38Speaker 3: three D thing was super cool. It's amazing because they
- 20:41Speaker 3: have a new three D view mobile view, so you
- 20:43Speaker 3: used to be able to do this on laptop, but
- 20:45Speaker 3: now you can do it on your phone, and it's
- 20:46Speaker 3: like you can like Credi arch in the desert, you
- 20:48Speaker 3: can like I was looking at area fifty one. He was,
- 20:51Speaker 3: I saw that this morning. Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really the Rebel Rally route. It's really good.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Now it shows also active wildfires, which I think is
- 20:59Speaker 2: really interest sting. And then by the time this podcast
- 21:02Speaker 2: hit you're going to be able to have access to
- 21:05Speaker 2: it through Apple car Play and Android Auto. Big innovations
- 21:09Speaker 2: are coming out from on X that are extremely exciting
- 21:13Speaker 2: and encouraging, so that platform continues to improve. So that's
- 21:16Speaker 2: a good one.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Did you see the photographer angle on that. But the
- 21:19Speaker 3: moon rise and sunrise and all we all the weather stuff.
- 21:22Speaker 3: We just really much anywhere on the map and it
- 21:24Speaker 3: gives you instantaneous like what's going on? Like as a photographer,
- 21:27Speaker 3: that's so invaluable. Yeah, it's really, really, really good.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Let me ask you guys a couple more questions, because
- 21:31Speaker 2: I think that these are interesting thoughts. What vehicle that
- 21:34Speaker 2: was there would you want to take home and have
- 21:37Speaker 2: in your own garage. Let's pick out a small company
- 21:40Speaker 2: like Mom and Pop that we'd love to get give
- 21:43Speaker 2: a shout out to that we think are doing cool stuff.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Do you want me to play marketing mat or do
- 21:46Speaker 1: you want me to be like actually honest as to
- 21:48Speaker 1: what FIAICLA would take home? Honest Matt, Yeah, Mike mcmod's
- 21:51Speaker 1: earthrum Er LTI. Okay, well I want Mike mcmod's brute.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So now Mike has no cars, thermal thermal camera carbon
- 22:00Speaker 1: every body. Yeah, some really thoughtful additions. Is the first
- 22:02Speaker 1: time I've been in an lt I? Yeah, Avantana?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's broadband internet anywhere in the world for
- 22:09Speaker 2: those that are listening.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, uh, you know, small company, it's it's maybe
- 22:13Speaker 1: more of a well known company. You know, I bought
- 22:16Speaker 1: another demo shovel when I was there, I was kind
- 22:18Speaker 1: of like anti demos for one's pretty bairly. The one
- 22:22Speaker 1: they fixed, They fixed the problems and now they're like
- 22:25Speaker 1: Susan's fantastic, always has been fantastic.
- 22:27Speaker 3: It took me a while to kind of like that's
- 22:29Speaker 3: a lot of money for a shovel.
- 22:31Speaker 1: The one great, new one's great. The mounts, the mount's
- 22:33Speaker 1: really nice and and you know, she hustles, and there's
- 22:36Speaker 1: a good product and they really stand behind it, you know,
- 22:39Speaker 1: and they have this little tiny booth that that was
- 22:42Speaker 1: for me.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I loved that new shovel. So yeah, I use one.
- 22:46Speaker 2: That's my shovel that I carry with me. They work
- 22:49Speaker 2: great all the time. Yeah yeah cool. Uh what about
- 22:53Speaker 2: you vehicle and demos? Is your product?
- 22:56Speaker 3: All right? Product for me? Small company? I'm gonna throw
- 22:59Speaker 3: out stuff twenty two? Yeah, I was thinking of that.
- 23:01Speaker 1: They had some really really innovative stuff and how they're
- 23:05Speaker 1: working with the materials, like pretty decent price points on
- 23:09Speaker 1: some of the stuff.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Some of the bags really don't work for me. And
- 23:12Speaker 3: I've used a bunch of their stuff, but some of
- 23:14Speaker 3: their new stuff. They're just really well thought out and
- 23:16Speaker 3: they all have a versatile angle. They're new. Like I'm
- 23:20Speaker 3: not a big Malley guy, like just not. I don't know,
- 23:22Speaker 3: it's a little it's a little tactic cool for me.
- 23:26Speaker 3: But they have a bell crow mall a system that
- 23:29Speaker 3: I hadn't seen before, so it's like it's even more
- 23:32Speaker 3: versatile than Malay doesn't and it looks cool. They have
- 23:34Speaker 3: a new like chameleon bag that's like a kitchen type
- 23:37Speaker 3: bag they can use for other things as well, but
- 23:38Speaker 3: it's kind of hard shell clamshell thing you hang.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know what they're doing with that hardshell
- 23:42Speaker 1: soft shell kind of stuff on a lot of their
- 23:44Speaker 1: I love bags. Adam was kind of walking me through
- 23:46Speaker 1: a few of them, and I'm gonna have to pick
- 23:48Speaker 1: a few up, like really good stuff.
- 23:49Speaker 3: He's got a new bag for the name of it,
- 23:51Speaker 3: but it's like this huge Duffel like thing and it
- 23:54Speaker 3: has these crazy zippers that zip down to the bottom
- 23:56Speaker 3: and it flops really open like a flower. It kind
- 23:59Speaker 3: of opens up and you just like pile stuff in
- 24:01Speaker 3: there and zip it up and then roll the top
- 24:02Speaker 3: and it's completely sealed. So wet recovery year and stuff
- 24:05Speaker 3: like that, and you can sense it as small as possible.
- 24:08Speaker 3: That kind of innovation is cool, Like he's definitely he's
- 24:10Speaker 3: not knocking anything off, like he's just doing it's his
- 24:13Speaker 3: own angle. Some of the stuff I don't think works perfect,
- 24:16Speaker 3: but a lot of.
- 24:16Speaker 1: There's there's almost nothing that he makes that is like
- 24:19Speaker 1: super similar no to anything else in the Monk. Some
- 24:22Speaker 1: of his tools are really thoughtful because again there's so
- 24:25Speaker 1: much like monkey c Monkey do.
- 24:27Speaker 3: And he has his own little like not his own,
- 24:30Speaker 3: but he's the only one in this industry using some
- 24:32Speaker 3: of the little zipper poles, different things, the parts and pieces.
- 24:35Speaker 3: If you look at one of those really closely, they're
- 24:37Speaker 3: well thought out in me, like it's all every piece
- 24:39Speaker 3: on it is purposeful and made for overla and not
- 24:42Speaker 3: like repurposed for yeah, totally over and travel. Some of
- 24:46Speaker 3: the stuff is like great because you can use.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Some of the dp kits and stuff were great for that.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So which which truck?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:51Speaker 1: Which one do you want to steal and drive home?
- 24:53Speaker 2: So?
- 24:53Speaker 3: Yeah, man, there was there was kind of two and
- 24:56Speaker 3: I flip flopped between the two. One was in the
- 24:59Speaker 3: stuff twenty booth actually was the multie too, so amazing.
- 25:02Speaker 3: That's not new, We've all seen it before. So how
- 25:05Speaker 3: was that in the country? Is that like based on
- 25:07Speaker 3: the US truck? It is?
- 25:08Speaker 2: It's a US truck, Isn't that's a US that specific
- 25:10Speaker 2: one is. Yeah, you just ship your two hundred over.
- 25:13Speaker 2: They cut it up and cool, send it back.
- 25:14Speaker 3: In harbon box on the back. You ate power.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And I keep looking at their troopies and I'm like,
- 25:19Speaker 1: drill constantly on the drill.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Constantly, eighty series underneath a seventy series troopy body.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And then I realized that that's a less comfortable version
- 25:27Speaker 1: of exactly what I used to drive them. It was
- 25:29Speaker 1: entirely you know, there's the there's the romance. I mean
- 25:33Speaker 1: you can't it's okay, It's like that was like the
- 25:37Speaker 1: formative years for me and Laura, like driving around Australia
- 25:39Speaker 1: and our Troopee. But yeah, yeah, slowly, slowly, Well you
- 25:43Speaker 1: get the get the Troopie with the V eight then
- 25:45Speaker 1: it's it's faster, but it's like still dangerous, still super dangerous.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Just eighty series frame with coils on that like.
- 25:54Speaker 1: The eighty series frame now, isn't it's still so it's
- 25:57Speaker 1: so yeah, absolutely, But.
- 25:59Speaker 3: The one, the one I probably would have driven away
- 26:01Speaker 3: with if somebody like all right, pick one and take
- 26:03Speaker 3: the keys for my wife and my young kid and
- 26:06Speaker 3: being able to put like gear on it, kayaks and stuff.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Is the new Terra Nova camper from Earth looks really Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 3: it's it's a one done truck with a full featured
- 26:17Speaker 3: quality system, pop top camper that has tons of sleeping
- 26:21Speaker 3: area for easily for a family of three or four
- 26:24Speaker 3: and they can there's enough room in there to like
- 26:26Speaker 3: move around and do stuff every system one draw it
- 26:28Speaker 3: out in the world. Yeah, because you'd be comfortable in
- 26:30Speaker 3: the cab, you'd have plenty of room.
- 26:33Speaker 1: And it has a pass through. It has a passed
- 26:35Speaker 1: through with a pop up. I mean to me, it's
- 26:38Speaker 1: like an evolution of the bread Van one, the Fuso
- 26:42Speaker 1: based the Fuso one. Like like love everything that Earth
- 26:45Speaker 1: Cruiser has done. I'm never going to want to drive
- 26:48Speaker 1: a bread van around the world.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Like I don't care.
- 26:51Speaker 1: If you put an LS in it, but like it's
- 26:54Speaker 1: super practical. But I'm not a super practical person, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 1: Like yeah, like I will, I will take an extra
- 27:00Speaker 1: couple of feet to have a six point seven liter
- 27:03Speaker 1: turbocharged V eight and a ten speed transmission, and like
- 27:07Speaker 1: air conditioned seats and stuff instead of a Fozo that
- 27:11Speaker 1: costs more with lass room.
- 27:13Speaker 3: And they'll do it on any one ton Us truck,
- 27:16Speaker 3: So like word Chevy or a new Ram thirty interior.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I mean imagine the whole av catalog thrown at it.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Plus that camper would be.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Sick forties prospestered XL with a turnover sick with a
- 27:28Speaker 3: customer rack on the roof for my kayaks, I'm in.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I think I'm with you.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I think I think like I'm not like a super
- 27:34Speaker 1: huge fan of the pop up like for me, I
- 27:38Speaker 1: don't know.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I just I wanted to be a pop up so
- 27:40Speaker 3: I can put kayaks on the roof and still fit
- 27:41Speaker 3: through holes like under bridges and stuff. Yeah.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it totally makes it the only thing I would
- 27:46Speaker 1: drive other than my earth Ruamber on the market right now.
- 27:49Speaker 3: And it's half the price I can put it. It's
- 27:51Speaker 3: about the same price as a used earth Roamer. Yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 3: it's about the same price as I use a brand
- 27:54Speaker 3: is a brand new truck with a warranty.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Almost three undred grand yeah yeah, just under three hundred Yeah,
- 27:59Speaker 1: and the prospector exel it's gonna be a little.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Yeah, they did it.
- 28:02Speaker 1: They did a great job, like a full prospector conversions
- 28:05Speaker 1: depending on how it's outfitted. It's twenty to thirty which
- 28:08Speaker 1: I know, which I'm not trying to say that that
- 28:10Speaker 1: is not a significant amount of money. You know, you
- 28:12Speaker 1: could travel around the world with that, And that's the
- 28:15Speaker 1: most important thing for this podcast is that is about travel.
- 28:18Speaker 1: We can't get distracted with the shiny things, but.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Expos about the shiny things over expose about the shiny
- 28:23Speaker 3: things and like to have a turnkey solution from a
- 28:26Speaker 3: company like av for twenty twenty five maybe thirty if
- 28:30Speaker 3: you're going like every your ticking, every light bar and whatever,
- 28:33Speaker 3: and it's OEM quality testing and that's the key and
- 28:36Speaker 3: it's done, it's turnkey, and that's labor.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Like I'm convinced that, like, if you're trying to put
- 28:40Speaker 1: a truck on thirty sevens or forties and you want
- 28:43Speaker 1: to do bumpers front and rear, any money, it's probably
- 28:46Speaker 1: cheaper you can go and you can spend seven thousand
- 28:48Speaker 1: dollars on an icon kit for your truck, and it
- 28:51Speaker 1: was it's arguably not going to perform as good, like
- 28:55Speaker 1: they're solving issues differently, they're they're doing issues. Yeah, they
- 29:00Speaker 1: still have geometry issues where AV is correcting the geometry,
- 29:03Speaker 1: which on a heavy vehicle is super important.
- 29:05Speaker 3: So AV wins on the geometry and getting that all correct.
- 29:08Speaker 3: I don't think they're as good as these crazy systems
- 29:11Speaker 3: in terms of.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Shock shocks and yeah, but you can always add those
- 29:14Speaker 1: shocks if that's something that.
- 29:15Speaker 3: You But also when you're over any probably should be
- 29:17Speaker 3: going anyway.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Totally publicself, Brian, these are public roads.
- 29:23Speaker 3: I know you do drive it to RS, but no,
- 29:28Speaker 3: but you're right. It's like you don't need all the
- 29:29Speaker 3: lights like I have on my g X. There's if
- 29:31Speaker 3: I get anywhere near out running those lights, I'm going
- 29:35Speaker 3: way too fast. Yeah, it's not there's public roads.
- 29:37Speaker 1: There's grandparents out there trying to get to their grandkids.
- 29:40Speaker 3: You know. So in this country and every other country,
- 29:42Speaker 3: they were trying to.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Drave to nighttimes, beard drinking time for the campsite. Never
- 29:46Speaker 1: drink and drive. Thanks to this week's sponsor, GCI Outdoor,

- 30:32Speaker 3: Let's transition to track and chat about that. Scott's got
- 30:35Speaker 3: to give us a company and a company company and
- 30:38Speaker 3: a product from Expo. Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I think I think we'll get. The vehicle that I
- 30:41Speaker 2: would drive home is Mike Spruit. I mean, it's just
- 30:44Speaker 2: there's just something about it. There's just something about it
- 30:47Speaker 2: that I it's.
- 30:47Speaker 3: A brout pickup rent. Yeah, I just really appreciate it.
- 30:49Speaker 3: I mean I'm unfortunate two door.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I'm fortunate that I do get to
- 30:53Speaker 2: drive it regularly to keep it running. It in service.
- 30:57Speaker 2: So but yeah, it's I think that. Yeah, the vehicle
- 31:01Speaker 2: thing is becoming less interesting. You know what the other
- 31:03Speaker 2: option I would pick there was a twelve hundred x
- 31:05Speaker 2: Scrambler Triumph Scrambler. I'll take that because that's actually want
- 31:09Speaker 2: to stipping in the truck house camper, like I picked
- 31:11Speaker 2: out it a little bit and it's.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Really well made. There.
- 31:14Speaker 2: They have done a wonderful job with the wrong chassis,
- 31:16Speaker 2: with a chassis that cannot be legally driven, So I
- 31:20Speaker 2: don't know how you do it.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I talked to him a bunch about that because I
- 31:23Speaker 3: wrote one of the original stories on that. Yeah, and
- 31:26Speaker 3: it still gets a lot of traffic, but it's the
- 31:28Speaker 3: wrong chassis period of according to that. But so they
- 31:32Speaker 3: they are saying that it's because they didn't want the
- 31:35Speaker 3: vehicle super high, which it would be an eight inches
- 31:37Speaker 3: shorter than my earth Rum, but it would be tall
- 31:39Speaker 3: if it was on a smaller, taller chassis, probably because
- 31:42Speaker 3: of the height of the camper. It's amazingly built. The
- 31:45Speaker 3: quality looks really really good. I know that cials towards
- 31:48Speaker 3: it across they reinforced. They did everything that.
- 31:50Speaker 1: You you are supposed to do to theoretically increase but
- 31:54Speaker 1: as GVW. But there's no legal provision to increase the
- 31:58Speaker 1: GVW and.
- 31:59Speaker 3: They're not the testing to do that. And it is
- 32:02Speaker 3: you registered as a Tacoma and you ensure it as
- 32:05Speaker 3: a custom RV. That's what they told me directly. It
- 32:08Speaker 3: doesn't add up. If you get in an accident, you
- 32:09Speaker 3: are so screwed.
- 32:10Speaker 1: But here, like, I get the sentimentality to the Tacoma, absolutely,
- 32:14Speaker 1: you know people like that. I get the sun Raider
- 32:17Speaker 1: or whatever way better. But so what's a price we
- 32:20Speaker 1: could agree on for a Tacoma TIERREDI pro Because people
- 32:23Speaker 1: are selling them oversticker. They're in the high forties. They're
- 32:27Speaker 1: in the high forties. Okay, so let's take that high forties.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And then they're putting a Curry rear axle, so they're
- 32:33Speaker 1: regearing the entire truck, so extending the frame, extending the frames,
- 32:37Speaker 1: forcing the frame, new drive shaft. They're offering an option
- 32:41Speaker 1: of a supercharger, which I just to a backle of
- 32:44Speaker 1: supercharging my Gladiator, and I'm ripping it off because like
- 32:48Speaker 1: it was terrible. So you're ruining, potentially ruining the reliability
- 32:53Speaker 1: of the motor. You're putting a non oe drive line
- 32:56Speaker 1: in the rear but.
- 32:59Speaker 3: More front, so you CV angles are really tall.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Well, I mean in theory that the farther you stretch
- 33:04Speaker 1: that control arm, the lower the angle is.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And get that.
- 33:06Speaker 1: But then you're doing bodywork to accommodate that that that
- 33:10Speaker 1: so at the end of this you're you're building a
- 33:13Speaker 1: full Tacoma. I'm just going to go out and say
- 33:15Speaker 1: that you're spending seventy to eighty thousand dollars on the
- 33:18Speaker 1: truck more probably, yeah.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Probably more.
- 33:19Speaker 1: So I can go and buy a thirty tremor, a
- 33:23Speaker 1: Tremor loaded, I can buy. I can buy any American
- 33:27Speaker 1: pickup truck I want.
- 33:29Speaker 3: You can buy a Tradesman prospect Or Excel.
- 33:31Speaker 1: No, no, dude, you can buy a you can buy
- 33:33Speaker 1: a Laramie prospect Or Excel for that, like a Laramie
- 33:39Speaker 1: twenty five hundred or a Laramie thirty five hundred. Starts
- 33:42Speaker 1: in the sixties and you're talking, you're talking twenty ish
- 33:46Speaker 1: to put.
- 33:46Speaker 3: It on there.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I want these guys to be so successful because
- 33:49Speaker 2: they are so talented, but super here's the challenge. It's
- 33:53Speaker 2: a it's going to be a three hundred thousand dollars
- 33:55Speaker 2: trucking camper. So someone who can afford a three hundred
- 33:57Speaker 2: thousand dollars trucking camper is going to have a network
- 34:00Speaker 2: worth that. If you get in an accident, if you
- 34:02Speaker 2: lose control with that truck and you run into a
- 34:04Speaker 2: school bus or anything else for that matter, they're gonna
- 34:08Speaker 2: go They're going to go after truck you know, they're
- 34:10Speaker 2: going to go after truck house first, and they're going
- 34:12Speaker 2: to realize, like, these guys have five cents to scrub together,
- 34:16Speaker 2: and then they come back to the person who has
- 34:18Speaker 2: enough money to spend three hundred thousand dollars on a camper.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Your your insurance is good. As soon as that happens,
- 34:23Speaker 2: your insurance is going to be like, oh, this vehicle
- 34:24Speaker 2: is modified, and like there's just there's no legal way
- 34:28Speaker 2: around it. It's just like it's super cool. As a
- 34:31Speaker 2: home build. They still love six of them with a
- 34:34Speaker 2: fifty thousand dollars non funnel deposit.
- 34:36Speaker 3: I wish them the absolutest. They're beautiful and they're beautiful
- 34:39Speaker 3: and they're gorgeous well built too. I mean, let's put
- 34:43Speaker 3: it out there. Yeah, right, they did they did wrong.
- 34:45Speaker 1: There's just no way around it legally, people that used
- 34:48Speaker 1: to work for Earth Roamer were complementing their quality.
- 34:51Speaker 3: That's that's a compliment in the sun Raider thing, because
- 34:54Speaker 3: that's where they come from. Right, they wanted that Toyota.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Well they've already got all six people who are sentimental
- 35:01Speaker 1: enough for a sun for a camper that sells for
- 35:05Speaker 1: fifteen grand, right now.
- 35:06Speaker 3: To drop people love this Tacoma Right, that's the bottom line.
- 35:09Speaker 1: I think, and I think I heard four thirty for
- 35:13Speaker 1: how you actually wanted to quit. So we we are
- 35:15Speaker 1: going to talk about Trek. Yeah, and I'm just going
- 35:18Speaker 1: to interject witty remarks.
- 35:20Speaker 3: I like this. This is great.
- 35:21Speaker 2: So we just talked about Overland Expo. Now we're going
- 35:23Speaker 2: to talk about the Trek event, which Ryan Door, who's
- 35:26Speaker 2: with us today one with along with his team and
- 35:29Speaker 2: who was on your team?
- 35:30Speaker 3: Absolutely we had Jeff from Hooniverse and we had Tommy
- 35:32Speaker 3: from TfL off Road. Awesome.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Well, you guys did an amazing job. It was so
- 35:36Speaker 2: fun to be along on that adventure with you. I
- 35:40Speaker 2: had a team as well. I had Kristin Canning and
- 35:42Speaker 2: I had Kristin Shaw on my team and they were
- 35:44Speaker 2: both amazing. We had an incredible adventure as well. But
- 35:47Speaker 2: for one of the team exercises we had, all of
- 35:50Speaker 2: us were there together and I was able to watch
- 35:52Speaker 2: you guys do your things and you crushed it.
- 35:55Speaker 3: So thanks, really impressive. It was super fun. It was
- 35:57Speaker 3: cool because, as you know, all the teams were put
- 35:59Speaker 3: together without our knowledge. We kind of knew maybe a
- 36:02Speaker 3: couple of days before, who our team was going to be,
- 36:05Speaker 3: so some of us knew of people or a little bit,
- 36:08Speaker 3: but almost all the teams. I mean, I'd met Tommy
- 36:10Speaker 3: at some events, but I've never met Jeff, and we
- 36:13Speaker 3: all got along really well and it worked out great.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I think your team was very similar, like worked together well, so,
- 36:18Speaker 3: which is really fun. So I think we're getting ahead
- 36:19Speaker 3: of ourselves here. I don't think most people know what
- 36:21Speaker 3: trek is well good call. Yeah yeah, unless.
- 36:24Speaker 1: You're like you're our resident Trek.
- 36:26Speaker 3: You to read it. So yeah, I mean you you
- 36:28Speaker 3: drove a truk truck for years. We only drove it
- 36:30Speaker 3: for a day, so yeah, well it's.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I guess it's it's it's the intersection of adventure sports
- 36:36Speaker 1: and you know the things where you move your legs
- 36:39Speaker 1: or the athletic sports, human power, human powered things without
- 36:43Speaker 1: engines and engines and four wheel driving and four wheel
- 36:46Speaker 1: drive tasks and technical driving. It's kind of a condensed,
- 36:49Speaker 1: more realistic version of I guess what Camel Trophy is
- 36:53Speaker 1: for modern days, you know, as we kind of you know,
- 36:55Speaker 1: interviewed Duncan Barbour. Yeah, you couldn't really replicate cameil truck
- 37:00Speaker 1: of these, but I think like Track, well first Trek
- 37:03Speaker 1: was started out. I guess as that it was, you know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: an inter dealer competition meant meant to meant to promote,
- 37:10Speaker 1: you know, that the lifestyle that is the land River brand.
- 37:13Speaker 3: And what it's supposed to be and not just like
- 37:15Speaker 3: the whole idea behind Drover releases to soccer moms, the
- 37:18Speaker 3: whole idea behind Track is to keep dealer employees and
- 37:21Speaker 3: dealerships motivated and oocused on the land River experience, not
- 37:26Speaker 3: just selling trucks, but what the what the truck should
- 37:30Speaker 3: be used for and what land River hopes that people
- 37:33Speaker 3: aspire to use the trucks for.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so you guys are on the media leg they
- 37:37Speaker 1: kind of put on, you know, there was the dealer.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Leg right, so we went first. Yeah, that went first,
- 37:42Speaker 3: the media went first. Pigs. Yeah, totally. Well.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I think they did like a little test the day before.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Tests with some of the suppliers the day before. Yeah, oh,
- 37:49Speaker 3: that's kind of cool. And then they had how many
- 37:52Speaker 3: teams were there this year? It was seven something like
- 37:55Speaker 3: that was it in Ashville Media teams in Ashville at
- 37:58Speaker 3: the Biltmore and there was six media teams and seventy
- 38:02Speaker 3: dealer teams. This year is the largest trek ever, so
- 38:05Speaker 3: I believe it was the sixth trek event in the US.
- 38:09Speaker 3: It was three or four in the nineties, and then
- 38:11Speaker 3: there was a couple in the early two thousands, and
- 38:14Speaker 3: then twenty nineteen and then this one. Awesome.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and we all, many of us know Sean Gorman.
- 38:20Speaker 2: He is he does a lot of special events for
- 38:23Speaker 2: land Rover, and he was the event coordinator. He's the
- 38:26Speaker 2: one who came up with many of the crazy tasks
- 38:29Speaker 2: that we had to complete. He also does do some
- 38:32Speaker 2: writing for Overland Journal as well, so it was really
- 38:35Speaker 2: cool to see him there. And I think he and
- 38:37Speaker 2: his team did such an amazing job. I mean, the
- 38:40Speaker 2: tasks were highly varied, which I think was really fun
- 38:44Speaker 2: and like for me, I literally felt like I was
- 38:48Speaker 2: a kid. I felt like the same energy, the same
- 38:51Speaker 2: energy that I felt when I picked up that first
- 38:53Speaker 2: Role Drive magazine with a camel trophy on the cover,
- 38:56Speaker 2: and it brought me back to all of those things
- 38:58Speaker 2: that I was so excited about. They didn't give us
- 39:00Speaker 2: a lot of warning before we were going, just a
- 39:02Speaker 2: couple of weeks. So I got right into doing two
- 39:05Speaker 2: a days and you exercised.
- 39:07Speaker 3: I did. I did.
- 39:08Speaker 2: I was running like miles and miles a day to
- 39:11Speaker 2: get ready for it, so it was really fun.
- 39:13Speaker 3: I did the opposite. I knew that the physical challenges.
- 39:16Speaker 3: I had some back issues recently, so I didn't want
- 39:18Speaker 3: to work out that way. But the physical challenge would
- 39:20Speaker 3: be tough, but I know I could hold my own
- 39:21Speaker 3: even if I got to grit it out and make
- 39:22Speaker 3: it happen. But the technical challenge, they kind of gave
- 39:25Speaker 3: us a hint as to a few of the things,
- 39:27Speaker 3: the same information I believe they gave the dealers. It
- 39:29Speaker 3: was stuff like, you need to know how to use
- 39:31Speaker 3: a high lift to lift things and to winch things
- 39:32Speaker 3: as it come along. You need to know how to
- 39:35Speaker 3: use sand ladders, You need to know how what the
- 39:39Speaker 3: how a land rover defender works and off road in
- 39:42Speaker 3: the different modes, you need to know some land rover history,
- 39:45Speaker 3: you need to be physically fit. That was kind of
- 39:47Speaker 3: about it. And I was at a map, a compass,
- 39:49Speaker 3: and a handheld GPS, a very specific unit. So they
- 39:52Speaker 3: gave us some little YouTube links to some tutorials through
- 39:56Speaker 3: like ARII and some other online stuff. Some of them
- 39:58Speaker 3: weren't great, but they were easy to find other ones
- 40:00Speaker 3: that were quite good at giving that information. So I
- 40:03Speaker 3: just kind of watched a bunch of YouTube channels to
- 40:05Speaker 3: get I've touched and done all those things in the past,
- 40:08Speaker 3: but hadn't touched a highlift in four or five years.
- 40:10Speaker 3: I sold my HIGHLFT with my last truck.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like the day. It was the day
- 40:14Speaker 1: before I left and Matt. Matt sees me out there, like,
- 40:17Speaker 1: I mean, I've done so much high lifting in my life,
- 40:19Speaker 1: but not for years, Like I haven't done it four years,
- 40:22Speaker 1: and so I'm like.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I think I remember all of that, and they're like.
- 40:25Speaker 1: A really useful tool for four wheel drive trainers to
- 40:28Speaker 1: scare their students.
- 40:31Speaker 3: That that is an accurate little skewer, but view on that.
- 40:35Speaker 3: But yeah, I learned how to use a highlift jack.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Okay, cool, you'll never use it. Both they're actually not useful.
- 40:40Speaker 1: They're very a four wheel drive.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Trainer out there that's roy Lean on the internet. But
- 40:44Speaker 3: they are useful.
- 40:45Speaker 1: But they're actually getting more and more specific in their
- 40:47Speaker 1: use in the fact that most modern vehicles are actually
- 40:50Speaker 1: using with them like a long travel wrangler.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Like, good luck with that. I mean, they just don't
- 40:54Speaker 3: have enough. How about it? How about the defender we
- 40:56Speaker 3: were in. How many points could you actually highlft off
- 40:59Speaker 3: of them? Yeah, only reverse it.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Other than well, you could down it as a down
- 41:03Speaker 2: low on the this as a win that's different.
- 41:05Speaker 3: But lift points on a.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Vehicle, yeah, I guess you can use them on the
- 41:08Speaker 1: wheels with the little adapter.
- 41:10Speaker 3: We didn't have a company.
- 41:12Speaker 1: You could use them in the rear on the lou nets,
- 41:14Speaker 1: use it.
- 41:14Speaker 3: With the little extension piece on the lift points under
- 41:17Speaker 3: the vehicle, like there's the regular scissor jack. Correct, And
- 41:20Speaker 3: you can use them on the recovery points if it's
- 41:22Speaker 3: on the front or back.
- 41:23Speaker 1: If the truck's at the right angle and the right situation,
- 41:26Speaker 1: you might be able to use the ninety pounds of
- 41:28Speaker 1: steel strapped to your roof rack.
- 41:30Speaker 3: So one of the we'll go right into a little bit.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I think, well before we'll get ahead of ourselves on that.
- 41:34Speaker 3: What trek is itself is a you get a map
- 41:37Speaker 3: and there's a number. There's like there was sixteen different
- 41:40Speaker 3: stations on the map, and the map is very loose
- 41:44Speaker 3: in its accuracy, but there were GPS coordinates for each
- 41:48Speaker 3: of these numbered things, and they each had a name.
- 41:51Speaker 3: So one was named like rat trap. And there's different
- 41:53Speaker 3: things that you have no clue what they are. You
- 41:55Speaker 3: can guess, but you don't really know what they are,
- 41:57Speaker 3: and they have a point value. And the idea is
- 41:59Speaker 3: you have X amount of hours you have to be
- 42:02Speaker 3: back by a certain time. For us, so I think
- 42:04Speaker 3: it was three thirty you had to be back, and
- 42:06Speaker 3: any any minute over that time you lost three points.
- 42:09Speaker 3: I think it was even one thirty, wasn't it. Maybe
- 42:10Speaker 3: it was one thirty. It was a specific time right now, Yeah, yeah,
- 42:15Speaker 3: but you lost three points every minute you were back,
- 42:17Speaker 3: which is really that's a lot. It would hurt a
- 42:20Speaker 3: lot to come back late. So I think I think
- 42:23Speaker 3: everybody made it back, just it looked like, yeah, we
- 42:26Speaker 3: were like twelve minutes early, just in case. But you
- 42:29Speaker 3: go around and the idea is you get this map
- 42:31Speaker 3: with this information on it and no more information than
- 42:34Speaker 3: that the night before you had out on the trail.
- 42:37Speaker 3: You really don't know. You know there's a start time,
- 42:39Speaker 3: you know there's an end time, and you have this
- 42:40Speaker 3: map and you're trying to get the most amount of
- 42:42Speaker 3: points possible in that. All the challenges are your single
- 42:44Speaker 3: team has to go in and accomplish it, or there
- 42:47Speaker 3: were two challenges where multiple teams work together to complete it.
- 42:51Speaker 3: But the deal is, if anybody's in the challenge when
- 42:53Speaker 3: you get there, you either have to wait far enough
- 42:55Speaker 3: away where you can't see what they're doing, or you
- 42:57Speaker 3: move on to a different one and hope that it's
- 42:59Speaker 3: not busy and find it. But they're really spread out
- 43:01Speaker 3: all over the biltmore they were so long, there's some
- 43:04Speaker 3: decent travel times between each one, so it really mattered
- 43:07Speaker 3: as to how you strategize to make all that happen.
- 43:09Speaker 3: So that's the basic outline of what Trek is as
- 43:12Speaker 3: a competition and the challenge ahead of you. Noted on
- 43:14Speaker 3: the high Lift, I want to get into that a
- 43:16Speaker 3: little bit. For one of the challenges, I think we
- 43:18Speaker 3: were only one of two or three teams that did it.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Is changing the tire, and you had to change the tire,
- 43:23Speaker 3: roll it or take the tire off, roll it all
- 43:25Speaker 3: the way around the vehicle, and then put it back on.
- 43:27Speaker 3: And then everybody get in the car and buckle up
- 43:29Speaker 3: and have all the tools put back away. And that's
- 43:31Speaker 3: when the time stopped. And it was a timed event,
- 43:33Speaker 3: and I think all the other teams used the high lift.
- 43:35Speaker 3: We dove in the back. It was a flat It
- 43:40Speaker 3: wasn't a bottle of the scissor scissor jack it comes
- 43:42Speaker 3: with it, but it's a factor. It was in a
- 43:44Speaker 3: flat field that they made us do this in. So
- 43:46Speaker 3: we looked at it for two seconds and we're like, okay,
- 43:48Speaker 3: scissor jack now. And we use as a team, and.
- 43:50Speaker 1: They gave us the base plate to put it on
- 43:52Speaker 1: to you.
- 43:53Speaker 3: We put it on the airbjack base plate. So apparently
- 43:55Speaker 3: one of the other teams we found out later, didn't
- 43:57Speaker 3: put it on the base plate, but that raised it
- 43:59Speaker 3: up a couple of inches. So you're faster that way,
- 44:01Speaker 3: no doubt, and it's way more stable and doesn't push
- 44:03Speaker 3: into the soft ground. You're out. So yeah, we crushed that.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I think we beat everybody by a couple of minutes
- 44:08Speaker 3: on that one. Sure, But again it's just the biggest
- 44:11Speaker 3: thing about trek in any of these type of competitions
- 44:13Speaker 3: is using your head and thinking critically and then enacting
- 44:16Speaker 3: and executing well. But a lot of the time there's
- 44:19Speaker 3: little tricks that you can do that are well within
- 44:21Speaker 3: the rules to do that. I mean, Scott, you might
- 44:23Speaker 3: want to talk about like what we did in the
- 44:25Speaker 3: challenge that we worked together on that was kind of
- 44:26Speaker 3: a little trick that apparently nobody else has done yet
- 44:28Speaker 3: or hadn't done, or what I was playing with the
- 44:30Speaker 3: rope line.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, so we were, and this was really
- 44:34Speaker 2: bright on Brian's part.
- 44:35Speaker 3: You had to get this.
- 44:36Speaker 1: This tire was in a channel and it needed to
- 44:39Speaker 1: line up with three different levels of difficulty on an
- 44:41Speaker 1: overhead beam, and so it was like winching in. Each
- 44:46Speaker 1: vehicle had a winch. You had to winch in on
- 44:47Speaker 1: one and winch.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Out on the other or whatever you had to do
- 44:50Speaker 2: to get it to roll and then lock in place precisely.
- 44:52Speaker 2: If it didn't lock in place precisely, then you had
- 44:55Speaker 2: to lower it all the way to the bottom start
- 44:56Speaker 2: over again. But Brian figured out that if you just
- 44:59Speaker 2: grab the winch line and you pull on it. You
- 45:01Speaker 2: could get the tire to kind of wiggle a little bit,
- 45:04Speaker 2: just that skosch that you needed to do a.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Vector pull off the winch line. It was a synthetic
- 45:09Speaker 3: winch line. You use gloves. There was much tension on it,
- 45:13Speaker 3: no weight on it yet right on it. For me,
- 45:15Speaker 3: it was straight up from kayaking. So when you do
- 45:18Speaker 3: z drags and different recoveries with ropes and pulleys and
- 45:21Speaker 3: things in a kayak, by grabbing the middle of the line,
- 45:23Speaker 3: you're doing a vector pole and you're doubling your pull
- 45:26Speaker 3: so and you have great control over it. And that
- 45:28Speaker 3: was what we needed instead of doing a winch which
- 45:31Speaker 3: had a delay because it was on a remote of
- 45:34Speaker 3: wireless remote, so it had a delay when you hit
- 45:36Speaker 3: it. It would still spool a couple turns between when you
- 45:38Speaker 3: let off the button. So it was just a fun
- 45:40Speaker 3: way to like get it wiggled and we are two
- 45:42Speaker 3: teams work together perfectly. We met there at a really
- 45:45Speaker 3: good time right towards the end of the competition and
- 45:47Speaker 3: we got maximum points and beat everybody on that one,
- 45:50Speaker 3: which is great.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they were all super fun, like building
- 45:53Speaker 1: the bridge.
- 45:54Speaker 3: The bridge was a bridge. It was a puzzle and
- 45:56Speaker 3: bridge a bridge. Pro really had wet, heavy oak beams,
- 46:01Speaker 3: so it was it was a workout.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it was very It was a very they were
- 46:04Speaker 2: many of the challenges were very physical. But there was
- 46:07Speaker 2: at one point one of the like we just could
- 46:10Speaker 2: not get these two things to work it the spacing
- 46:12Speaker 2: wasn't right in your bridge in our bridge. And then
- 46:15Speaker 2: Kristin Shaw was like, hey, let's put it up at
- 46:18Speaker 2: it at it in like a triangle and then jump
- 46:20Speaker 2: on it.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Like so that's like perfect for me. You take the
- 46:23Speaker 1: two hundred pound guy, just have them. So she put
- 46:25Speaker 1: it the two Christens. They got it lined up and
- 46:27Speaker 1: then I just jumped on top of it and it
- 46:29Speaker 1: smacked in place, and the guys like time done. You know,
- 46:32Speaker 1: actually you weren't really quite done because you said that
- 46:35Speaker 1: you're done. You got the puzzle right, but then you
- 46:37Speaker 1: had to disassemble the whole thing.
- 46:39Speaker 3: To drive across the bridge with your with your land
- 46:41Speaker 3: river and then to disassemble it and that's when your
- 46:43Speaker 3: time ended. Lots of very heavy giant logs. So that
- 46:47Speaker 3: was a lot of work. Yeah, that was the second
- 46:49Speaker 3: most laborious challenge in the whole thing. High lift jack
- 46:52Speaker 3: one was winching or using a high lift jack as
- 46:55Speaker 3: it come along. By far was the most physically demanding.
- 46:59Speaker 3: I might still be heard a little.
- 47:00Speaker 1: It was two car lenks of a defender winching it
- 47:03Speaker 1: uphill in reverse. I still have forty degree angle, like
- 47:06Speaker 1: I literally camera. I still have the blister on my hand.
- 47:10Speaker 1: So that was pretty tough. And it's it's like, you
- 47:13Speaker 1: have to be strong enough to be able to operate
- 47:15Speaker 1: the jack.
- 47:15Speaker 3: Especially once it gets vertical on the hill side. It's yeah,
- 47:18Speaker 3: that's a challenge and resetting and knowing how to do it,
- 47:20Speaker 3: and totally they were really good about staying on top
- 47:23Speaker 3: of it, and yeah, they were making sure you were
- 47:25Speaker 3: safety because yeah, that one could go wrong pretty quick,
- 47:28Speaker 3: super wrong, really quick. Yeah, Yeah, super fun. There was
- 47:31Speaker 3: so many different challenges. I think the fun part was
- 47:34Speaker 3: it was with five media teams and one team that
- 47:37Speaker 3: was that had Lindsay Vaughn on it and kind of
- 47:40Speaker 3: two ringers.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Yeah, to help out. Even the editor that was with
- 47:43Speaker 1: them was a ringer.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Yeah. They were super physically fit. Yeah, they knew their stuff.
- 47:48Speaker 3: They'd done the Rebel Rally of the Gazelle rally stuff like
- 47:50Speaker 3: that in the past, so they knew navigation they to drive.
- 47:53Speaker 3: That team was for sure the one to beat. We
- 47:55Speaker 3: all knew it. And they had a three or four
- 47:57Speaker 3: car entourage following them around with video cameras, so they
- 48:00Speaker 3: were shooting for I think outside TV correct understanding correct.
- 48:03Speaker 3: So I think Lindsay has been a land Rover ambassador
- 48:06Speaker 3: in the past, and she's still finding her way in
- 48:08Speaker 3: after her retirement from professional skiing and finding what's what
- 48:12Speaker 3: and working with Lennard, I think working towards being an
- 48:14Speaker 3: ambassador again in a different capacity.
- 48:16Speaker 1: No, that was it was so fun to have and
- 48:18Speaker 1: they were all great. It was fun to have them there.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Our team's like little personal victory was we were pretty
- 48:23Speaker 2: good at getting to the to the first truck, so
- 48:25Speaker 2: this was really cool. We start the event, they say,
- 48:28Speaker 2: all the navigators come up here, they give a horn
- 48:30Speaker 2: off and then all the navigators need to run to
- 48:32Speaker 2: this point. So I'm running and I've got a backpack,
- 48:34Speaker 2: and then a minute later they do the horn again
- 48:37Speaker 2: and then the rest of the team's run down. So
- 48:39Speaker 2: do a navigation something that I'm okay at so and
- 48:42Speaker 2: I'm good, very good at and I'm good with the
- 48:44Speaker 2: GPS and everything. So I get down there and we
- 48:47Speaker 2: were quick. My team had not even arrived, and I
- 48:50Speaker 2: was already like, let's go. So we started running through
- 48:53Speaker 2: the four When you.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Got to that first point, like so the navigat one
- 48:56Speaker 3: person from each team ran to that point. You were
- 48:58Speaker 3: that selected person, and that we called the navigator. We
- 49:00Speaker 3: just picked somebody and that person ran down. They got
- 49:02Speaker 3: a clue that had some navigational information on it, right,
- 49:05Speaker 3: which allowed us to go find the trucks.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Yeah, because the trucks were not they were hidden, they.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Weren't there, which we didn't know the night before. It
- 49:11Speaker 3: was just like, you're going to be at the start
- 49:12Speaker 3: line at this time, and it was a couple of
- 49:14Speaker 3: miles away.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it was yeah, go ahead, you finished the Yeah,
- 49:18Speaker 2: So we start running. We just start running and and
- 49:20Speaker 2: it was interesting because on my team and I can
- 49:23Speaker 2: understand it, they're saying, well, it's it's faster to go
- 49:25Speaker 2: this one direction. I said, but we don't know what's there.
- 49:28Speaker 2: How dense is the forest? Are there are there going
- 49:30Speaker 2: to be fences or whatever? I said, So let's stay
- 49:33Speaker 2: on any traveled track that heads us in the right direction.
- 49:37Speaker 2: And and that's and that saved us a ton of time.
- 49:39Speaker 2: And we were actually we were actually almost at the trucks,
- 49:42Speaker 2: and then here comes Tommy.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Is it Tommy?
- 49:44Speaker 2: Uh, Tommy in the front. So Tommy was there and
- 49:47Speaker 2: I was in the front. So we ran it. But
- 49:49Speaker 2: it was it was awesome. So we were minutes ahead
- 49:51Speaker 2: of anybody else.
- 49:52Speaker 3: First two teams at the trucks within a second of
- 49:55Speaker 3: each other was for our two teams. Yeah, and then
- 49:57Speaker 3: we came from different ways totally. Our team went way long.
- 50:00Speaker 3: We stayed on main roads like gravel roads. I picked
- 50:03Speaker 3: that on purpose based on the navigational direction we were
- 50:06Speaker 3: trying to figure out. And I think you took the
- 50:08Speaker 3: forest trail that went through the middle, but it was
- 50:09Speaker 3: a two track we did. Yeah, And I looked at
- 50:11Speaker 3: that of the map and I was like, oh, that's shorter,
- 50:13Speaker 3: but I'm not sure what's the deal is with that?
- 50:14Speaker 1: Who knows if it was a good idea or not.
- 50:16Speaker 1: And then we're still on foot. Yeah, we were running
- 50:20Speaker 1: with us.
- 50:20Speaker 3: We were all had like full backpacks for like camera
- 50:22Speaker 3: gear and stuff. So that was the worst part. Yeah,
- 50:24Speaker 3: I had like giant backpack. I'm running with. What was
- 50:27Speaker 3: so fun though, is as we get to the trucks
- 50:29Speaker 3: and the Christians jumped in and we were gone. We
- 50:33Speaker 3: were off on the road and probably still ten minutes
- 50:36Speaker 3: out is Lindsay and her team and they see us
- 50:38Speaker 3: come around the corner and one of the trucks and
- 50:39Speaker 3: all of their eyes are this big and they're standing
- 50:42Speaker 3: there with their hands out going well because they were
- 50:45Speaker 3: still ten minutes away from the trucks.
- 50:46Speaker 1: They were so far away. But then they of course
- 50:48Speaker 1: they crushed it after that.
- 50:49Speaker 3: They you know, they did really well on all of
- 50:52Speaker 3: the challenges. I took a photo of the final numbers
- 50:55Speaker 3: at the end, like the score sheet and after they
- 50:57Speaker 3: announced all the winners and stuff, and they beat us
- 51:01Speaker 3: at one or two challenges one handily. I forget what
- 51:04Speaker 3: they did was, but they beat us. All that lot
- 51:06Speaker 3: is its skiing. They definitely would have because it's skiing.
- 51:09Speaker 1: If that was an option.
- 51:11Speaker 3: It was chilli that morning, but it got warm, quite
- 51:14Speaker 3: warm there skiing on grass. That would have been fun
- 51:18Speaker 3: of grass. That was the one disappointment I think with
- 51:20Speaker 3: trek for me was that there wasn't a lot of
- 51:23Speaker 3: that physical stuff. Apparently that had some issues sourcing the
- 51:25Speaker 3: kayaks or bikes or something. Yeah, so there was running,
- 51:28Speaker 3: but there was no kayaking or biking, which is usually
- 51:30Speaker 3: a part of the track competition.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I think that would have been helpful. I was looking
- 51:33Speaker 1: forward to that too. Yeah, and I think it could.
- 51:36Speaker 3: Have won more if there was kayaks. Brian. Probably.
- 51:39Speaker 1: The other thing that's interesting too is they have like
- 51:41Speaker 1: this honor system about you can't go over twenty miles
- 51:43Speaker 1: an hour, and I just I made it just. I said, look,
- 51:46Speaker 1: I want to this is an exciting thing for me.
- 51:48Speaker 1: I've never been able to do track. I may never
- 51:50Speaker 1: be able to do it again. I want to finish
- 51:52Speaker 1: this thing and never have any regrets. So I we
- 51:55Speaker 1: just held a hard and fast rule on twenty miles
- 51:57Speaker 1: an hour, and we could see other teams doing which
- 52:00Speaker 1: is too bad. It's just really too bad. So but
- 52:03Speaker 1: that's how things get. Brian looks guiltily.
- 52:05Speaker 3: I don't think we got over twenty six. We did
- 52:07Speaker 3: twenty two to twenty six miles places, and really but
- 52:10Speaker 3: all the places where it was like you were protecting
- 52:13Speaker 3: the grapes and stuff. There's vineyards there and you don't
- 52:15Speaker 3: want dust on the grapes. So we do ten mile
- 52:17Speaker 3: an hour through those sections like, we're really really careful
- 52:19Speaker 3: about it, but we did not hold steady at twenty grass.
- 52:22Speaker 3: It was well under thirty version. Yes, that rose. I
- 52:26Speaker 3: don't think they had rose though they didn't have good
- 52:28Speaker 3: wine at the Biltmore actually depressed it was.
- 52:31Speaker 2: It was such a beautiful property and the Defenders did.
- 52:35Speaker 2: They did well as we have all experienced driving them.
- 52:38Speaker 2: They're so capable of the new four cylinder Defenders. Yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 2: it's so so capable, and the ride quality is so
- 52:44Speaker 2: exceptional and Terrier is amazing because one of my team
- 52:48Speaker 2: members had never driven off road and just to give
- 52:51Speaker 2: them the keys, to put them in the driver's seat
- 52:53Speaker 2: and have them feel so confident doing that, it was
- 52:55Speaker 2: so perfect.
- 52:56Speaker 3: It was a perfect vehicle for that. Yeah. Absolutely, the
- 52:59Speaker 3: Defenders held their own. They were fully outfitted with all
- 53:02Speaker 3: kinds of They were orange, which I love everything orange,
- 53:04Speaker 3: and it knows me tangiers orange orange colors they should be.
- 53:08Speaker 3: Is that's the color they were. I don't believe it was.
- 53:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Maybe it looked pretty similar to them. It looked it
- 53:13Speaker 1: looked prouder, Yeah, I think it was.
- 53:15Speaker 3: It looked right. Yeah, we'll call it that. It was
- 53:17Speaker 3: a really good orange like it was an orange brand
- 53:20Speaker 3: new Defender one ten with the four cylinder engine, I think,
- 53:23Speaker 3: stocked stock tire size, but good good year ats on it.
- 53:27Speaker 3: They had. They put seelies on it, but they were
- 53:29Speaker 3: painted black instead of I like white that comes on
- 53:32Speaker 3: the on the normal trucks.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I like that roofs they did have, they did have
- 53:36Speaker 1: black and yeah, and then had way too much stuff
- 53:40Speaker 1: on the racks.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Any criticisms I could have of the builds was why
- 53:44Speaker 1: are their two field cans on the top.
- 53:47Speaker 3: It looked like I guess they don't historically have that. Yeah. Yeah,
- 53:50Speaker 3: for camel Trophy, you needed that, so maybe that's maybe. Yeah,
- 53:53Speaker 3: I know. Lucky eight off Road did a bunch of
- 53:56Speaker 3: the modifications and build on it with their Proud Rhino brands.
- 53:59Speaker 3: So they did it, built sliders, but they were not
- 54:01Speaker 3: on our trucks, which I was surprised. But that was
- 54:02Speaker 3: the one thing that I thought they could have used
- 54:04Speaker 3: for some of the stuff, but we didn't really need
- 54:05Speaker 3: it on most of our challenges. But they had a
- 54:07Speaker 3: hidden winch up front, worn Winch factory five row hook. Yeah,
- 54:13Speaker 3: and then they had a full the land rover roof
- 54:16Speaker 3: rack with two jerry cans a spare tire. So the
- 54:19Speaker 3: vehicles had two spars onenerneath and one on the roof.
- 54:22Speaker 3: They had a high one on the back door. Oh sorry,
- 54:24Speaker 3: you're right back door in the roof. Yeah, and then
- 54:27Speaker 3: they had a high left on the roof and a
- 54:29Speaker 3: shovel on the roof. That was all it was on
- 54:31Speaker 3: the or No, and then a set of tread pros
- 54:34Speaker 3: on the roof on a mount for them. And they
- 54:37Speaker 3: had two recovery points on the back, had the dog
- 54:40Speaker 3: cage in it from land rover which they hung a
- 54:42Speaker 3: bunch of the soft shackles and first aid kid and
- 54:45Speaker 3: fire extinguisher and a number of those things. In the
- 54:47Speaker 3: back they had the factory air compressor built in and
- 54:52Speaker 3: that was wrapped in a Trek logo and like orange print,
- 54:56Speaker 3: which is really neat. I thought the dash plaque was
- 54:59Speaker 3: cool too. Yeah, so the plaques on these are really so.
- 55:01Speaker 3: There's only seventy of these they are ever going to
- 55:03Speaker 3: be built. Each dealership that enters the competition orders one
- 55:06Speaker 3: for their dealership. They get him fully outfitted with all
- 55:09Speaker 3: this stuff, and they pay for all that and they
- 55:11Speaker 3: get to keep that at the end of the competition.
- 55:12Speaker 3: So they compete in their truck. We got to borrow
- 55:14Speaker 3: some trucks from a number of the dealers before they
- 55:16Speaker 3: used them, and then those deal then the dealers either
- 55:19Speaker 3: keep them or sell them off as special limited editions.
- 55:21Speaker 3: But each one had a number of plaques that were numbered.
- 55:24Speaker 3: So it was one through seventy the seventy trucks, and
- 55:27Speaker 3: there was a plaque under the hood. There was a plaque.
- 55:29Speaker 3: I didn't see that one. Yeah, there's a numbered plaque.
- 55:31Speaker 3: I was distracted trying to get the breakfast burrito out
- 55:34Speaker 3: from the breakfast sandwich. They told us burrito and sandwich.
- 55:37Speaker 3: The sandwiches were quite good, but it was not a
- 55:38Speaker 3: burrito as promised.
- 55:40Speaker 2: They were nice and hot. So when you got to
- 55:42Speaker 2: your first time they had to wait for an event,
- 55:44Speaker 2: you popped the hood and grabbed the food.
- 55:46Speaker 3: Got a breakfast sanwich that was a super good fuel.
- 55:48Speaker 1: It was perfect. They were just added to the fun
- 55:50Speaker 1: of it.
- 55:50Speaker 3: I thought, yeah. And so they had like a classic
- 55:53Speaker 3: looking Defender badge on the rear tailgate and that was numbered,
- 55:56Speaker 3: and then under the hood around the gear selector on
- 55:59Speaker 3: the dashboard, and there was a hologram that was not numbered.
- 56:03Speaker 3: I don't think there's a Treck Limit Edition hologram in
- 56:05Speaker 3: each of the B pillars. When you open both doors,
- 56:07Speaker 3: you could find it. And I believe those are all
- 56:08Speaker 3: the badges and had a If you look behind the
- 56:11Speaker 3: glove box, there is a signature there. Oh okay, cool,
- 56:14Speaker 3: that's a that's a little tip for anybody looking at
- 56:15Speaker 3: a Trek truck if they have it. If they wanted
- 56:17Speaker 3: to know, how did they put the four cylinder in?
- 56:19Speaker 3: There are going to be one hundred thousand dollars vehicles.
- 56:21Speaker 3: That's why they didn't want it to be one hundred
- 56:23Speaker 3: and forty thousand vehicle. They literally wanted to keat the
- 56:25Speaker 3: price down. That is what I understood. There's a big
- 56:27Speaker 3: price in between the four cylinder and the V eight.
- 56:28Speaker 3: I don't know that, not the V eight, but just
- 56:31Speaker 3: like the six hybrid gen em Yeah.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Are they doing away with the six and they're just
- 56:34Speaker 1: going to have this new thing?
- 56:36Speaker 3: So I think there's three options. The four is that
- 56:38Speaker 3: much just hitting our markets. Ten was available and then
- 56:40Speaker 3: it goes like stink. Remember that one we were at
- 56:42Speaker 3: in England and the Range.
- 56:43Speaker 1: River sport ripped it ripped rip, but an electrically supercharged
- 56:47Speaker 1: turbocharged hybrid Land River engine keeps me up at night.
- 56:50Speaker 3: There's a lot of tech in that, but little frightening. Yeah,
- 56:54Speaker 3: that's why they're four cylinders.
- 56:55Speaker 2: I guess that's why a lot of the owners either
- 56:57Speaker 2: lease them or pay cash for them and then trade
- 56:59Speaker 2: them in out for a couple of years.
- 57:00Speaker 3: The four cylinder had plenty of power. I thought it
- 57:02Speaker 3: was fine. I had no problem with that. It's turbo four,
- 57:05Speaker 3: right it is. Yeah. It had an interesting power cut
- 57:08Speaker 3: off computer thing in low range when I tried to
- 57:10Speaker 3: give it power and I don't I replicated a number
- 57:13Speaker 3: of times in a number of situations, and I couldn't
- 57:15Speaker 3: figure out how to get it not to do it.
- 57:16Speaker 3: I don't know if that's just the four cylinder what
- 57:18Speaker 3: the deal was. But in four low trying to do
- 57:20Speaker 3: twenty mile an hour down a.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Two track, were you in rock mode? Possibly at times
- 57:24Speaker 1: the rock the rock model do that and it holds
- 57:26Speaker 1: the gear for too long.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're if you're in the raw power like
- 57:30Speaker 3: it was like a traction controlled killing it killing exactly.
- 57:33Speaker 3: So Yeah, we found that mud mode was a little better. Yeah,
- 57:36Speaker 3: we played with the roads a little bit, but we
- 57:38Speaker 3: were rolled in low range the entire time they made it.
- 57:41Speaker 1: We had to go well, and they required I mean
- 57:43Speaker 1: they we started off in low range.
- 57:45Speaker 3: We started off in lorange, but you could do whatever
- 57:46Speaker 3: you wanted to. Truck should make it work, but you
- 57:48Speaker 3: had to go you know, slow anyway, So it was like, okay,
- 57:51Speaker 3: why mess with this. Yeah, we just stayed in low
- 57:52Speaker 3: range and on that truck. It really doesn't affect the
- 57:55Speaker 3: turning areas too much, so it's not really a thing. Yeah,
- 57:57Speaker 3: but the trucks were great. They handled well. I don't
- 57:59Speaker 3: think anybody had to Nobody had an actual flat.
- 58:01Speaker 1: It didn't see any it didn't seem like it.
- 58:03Speaker 3: No, there wasn't any super extreme off roading. There was
- 58:06Speaker 3: definitely one challenge that we didn't get to do that
- 58:08Speaker 3: looked really fun. Did you get to the one where
- 58:10Speaker 3: you you put like a they hang a little tag
- 58:13Speaker 3: from your bumper or your tire, that one you're the
- 58:15Speaker 3: most challenging. That looked awesome and that we just didn't
- 58:18Speaker 3: get to that one. There's no way to get to
- 58:20Speaker 3: every challenge in the time allotted, so you really got
- 58:22Speaker 3: to be choosy about what you do and try to
- 58:24Speaker 3: optimize your points. But yeah, so what happened with that one,
- 58:27Speaker 3: because that one looked awesome. That was kind of like
- 58:29Speaker 3: a tank mini tank trap. And then there was a
- 58:31Speaker 3: rock crawling section that you had to get up to
- 58:33Speaker 3: one of the tags with and that was the most
- 58:36Speaker 3: difficult to get the tag near an obstacle while driving
- 58:39Speaker 3: off road close enough that you could punch it with
- 58:41Speaker 3: like a whole punch from an orienteering thing, right exactly.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Yeah, So and it was on a very and a
- 58:46Speaker 2: very short lead, so you'd be like off camera work. Yeah,
- 58:50Speaker 2: Sean did a great Shan did a grazing job great,
- 58:52Speaker 2: and his team did a great job, so that one
- 58:55Speaker 2: of them was at the top of this rock crawling field.
- 58:58Speaker 2: And that one was really interesting because that was one
- 59:01Speaker 2: of the few times and it was the only time
- 59:03Speaker 2: I drove all day, but it was it was really
- 59:06Speaker 2: fun for me because it was difficult. I mean, it
- 59:09Speaker 2: was like I was thinking, I'm really having to pay
- 59:12Speaker 2: attention to how to get this car right up to
- 59:14Speaker 2: this tree without hitting the tree. But if you didn't
- 59:16Speaker 2: have enough momentum, you'd spin out and it could not
- 59:18Speaker 2: climb it because it was all wet from the rain.
- 59:20Speaker 2: So it was just the right amount of like bouncing
- 59:22Speaker 2: momentum to get I asked the guy, I said, how
- 59:25Speaker 2: many people have hit the trees?
- 59:26Speaker 3: Like most It poured overnight in the night before, so
- 59:30Speaker 3: we all everyone camped on the field the night before,
- 59:33Speaker 3: so you get your info, You have dinner with everybody,
- 59:36Speaker 3: they kind of tell you the rules, and then you
- 59:38Speaker 3: sleep in a tent in a field. And it poured
- 59:40Speaker 3: rain on the kind of the back nine of the
- 59:42Speaker 3: builtmore estate poor, a lot of people poor, I mean
- 59:45Speaker 3: torrential downpour. And what everybody always asked, Yes, Lindsay Vaughn
- 59:48Speaker 3: did sleep in a tent in the field with the
- 59:50Speaker 3: rest of us. She did. She was great, was the
- 59:52Speaker 3: first thing everybody asked online, and like, yeah, absolutely she was.
- 59:54Speaker 3: I mean she was on her own, and you know,
- 59:56Speaker 3: I was worried about was worried about the journalists. Are
- 59:59Speaker 3: you tough seasons?
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I think I think land Rover did a pretty good job.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: I mean, we stayed at the biltmore like hotel the
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: night before and after the tent, so it wasn't awful.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: They didn't know it was.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: It was just a simple, little two person tent. I
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: thought it was kind of neat. The rain cover had
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the logo on it, so like I wanted to keep
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: it because it was special to me, and it was
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: plenty warm and comfortable and.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Just an ri I two person backpacking tent with a
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: ari I thirty degree sleeping bag and an Arii airpad.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: It was an air mattress. So it's a three pack.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: They sell it ari I as a kit and it
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: comes in a single bag, and then they're all orange,
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: which is convenient. And the tents they had screen printed
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: with the track logo for this year, so it's a
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: kind of a limited edition cool tent. I think it
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: was sup yeah, super cool.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: And I didn't I didn't hear any journalists complaining when
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I was joking, well, no, you make a valid point.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: You you literally make a valid point.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: It was a variety of journalists there, like all ages
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: and abilities and you know, all the above. So I know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: I talked a few of them and this was the
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: first time they'd ever since they were a kid, slept
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: in a tent, like since they were like seventeen, And
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: I was like, whoa, really, I don't sleep in a
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: tent very often these days. I got a nice Lexus
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: that I can sleep inside of when I'm on the road.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: But you know, every year or two, a couple of
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: nights in a tent happens, for sure, on various things.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I love the fact that that it was raining and
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: great like the fun it was so it was so fun.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: It made it more serious for me. It was like,
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: all right, it's raining, it's.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: That horn going that horn going off, and we're all
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: running to go get our way points. And it was
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: and then I don't know if you guys felt this way,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: but getting to the trucks, like I didn't know if
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I had made any of the right choices, like I was,
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I was very quick to make decisions and to get
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: the waypoint in the in the device, we're all alone, there's.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Nobody around, and I'm like, we're gonna be this could
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: be the last truck. I'm thinking, I'm starting to doubt myself,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and we run the wrong directions.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: You don't run two miles in the wrong direction over
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: hill the train. I'm not going to make up that
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: it was. It was great, that it was super fun,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: super fun. We second guessed ourselves like three times on that,
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: like nab to the first truck not as easy as
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: it should have been. The information they gave us was
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: not clean information navigational information. We'll just leave it at that. Yeah.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Well, and even even one of the one of the events,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: they had the waypoint completely wrong on the and I
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: told Sean, I'm like, Chay, Sean, you might want to
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: fix this for the next one.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: It's totally wrong. Yeah. So yeah, like it's great. I
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: loved it. Just a variety of everything. It was great. Yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: And there was stuff that that beat us too, Like
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: we talked about a few that we did really well at,
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: but the reality is, like we did one called rat trap,
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: And what that involves is this like octagon that you
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: drive into with the truck and it's really small, like
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: one and a quarter of the length of the vehicle essentially,
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: and you have to drive in forward and you have
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: to drive out forward, and you have so you have
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: to get this thing turned around within this little thing
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: without touching vertical poles on the octagon that are covered
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: in pool noodles like these poles. Sure, I won't say impossible,
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: but we failed, like full on failed. I did it
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: first as a driver, and there is a trick to it.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: I don't even want to give it away, but it's
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: really hard and I'm not even sure the trick that
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: I found out later afterwards would have helped us any
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: Like that's how hard it was. It seems really simple,
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: like just turn a car around in a box or
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: in an octagon thing. Every time we would end up
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: in a corner, like right next to the post without
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: touching any but get right up to it and no
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: way to exit except going back the exact same way
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: we were, and we ended up right back in the
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: middle facing the wrong direction. It was the most frustrating
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: thing I've ever done. So we those situations you also
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: have to cut your losses. Our team were like a
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: ton of time trying to get me through it because
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: I was a driver and you had to get all
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: three drivers to do this. Oh wow. It was like,
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: oh man, this is going to take ages, and you
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: only have an hour max to do any of the competition, right,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: So we we basically gave up. We took three penalties
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: on me to get me out of the thing, got out,
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: drove out, and then each person drove in and out,
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: just forward and back, and then we took off. So
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: we're like, we did the cut. We did it. We
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: tried and hopefully got max. Like I don't know if
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: theod else is going to complete it, but at least
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: we tried, and we found out later nobody else had
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: made it to that one. It was one of the
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: furthest away from all the other big point ones. Sure
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: nobody had actually gone there, so we got max points
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: even though we completely failed. Well, so that's part of strategy.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: It was huge. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: One of the ones they had was you had a
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: tow a vehicle trailer and it was very tight.
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Yeah, just like trailer.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you had to you had to go Yeah, it
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: was offered.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: You had to go around a loop this way and
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: then back it up into a spot and then go
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: forward and then go around the other way and the loop.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: It was very but it's not a circle in it.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: It was very It was very It was a wide
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: car trailer, empty car trailer, but like a wide aluminum
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: double axle trailer off road.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: But this is how clever, This is how clever they are.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: This is what made it so fun is you go in,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: you have to hook up the the defender to the trailer.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: The defender the trailer is too low. How do you
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: solve that with a defender?
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Suspense?
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Exactly but nobody knew that.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: So like, as I'm backing up Kristin, I'm like, because
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: you had to have two drivers do the same thing.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: So Christin Shaw was one and I was the other
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: driver for that, and I said, I said back up,
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: lower the air suspension. And again the guy was like,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: oh you figured that out quick, but he said most
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: some people just couldn't.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: So then they're trying to lift it themselves, like as
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: a team and it's too heavy, but yeah, or they
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: would use the high lift jack to try to get
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: it higher. Really yeah, but just they didn't to waste
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: some time. But they didn't know.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: Well, that's the part of this competition, because it is
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: for dealers. It's all about knowing the trucks. That's a
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: big party. They even told us beforehand, you really got
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: to know how the modes were, what's what the air ride,
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: how to make the truck work the way you need
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: it to work. And the night before they did give
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: us a little refresher on like what was in the vehicle.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: They let us ask questions and they would answer anything
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: about it with the buttons. They had one vehicle there
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: at camp in the rain, and they showed us how
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: to use the winch and their real control for it
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: and everything else because a number of people hadn't used
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: that setup on that rig.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: So it was it was super fun. All of it
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: was just like I was so stoked the whole day. Yeah,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I mean we had such a great time. I could
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: not have asked for a better team. We laughed and
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: we never raised our voices and we did our very
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: best and we had just an awesome time doing it.
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: So I don't know how that happened. Like on our
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: team was the same. It was like we all clicked,
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: we all worked together really well. We hadn't really known
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: each other at all, and it just flowed all day long.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: We never really had a tomic. Jeff awesome people. They're awesome.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: I'm so stoked out of them, you know, as new friends.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Like it was just amazing.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: I really like, Yeah, I don't know Jeff well, but
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Tommy I know well, and he's always been great to
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: deal with.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Absolutely. Yeah, the team. The team work was a huge
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: part of it. Like there's no way to win that
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: without good teamwork. But it's impossible. And that's always been
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: the motto of land Rover and especially Camel Trophy, Like
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: winning Cambell Trophy is a big deal, right, but winning
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: the Team Spirit Award is what goes down in the
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: record books. That's really the important thing to win at
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: Cameil Trophy back in the day. So that's kind of
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I know. I brought that concept with me into this event,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: is like, even if we don't win, I'm going to
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: try to win. I'm a competitor. I'm going to go
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: out there, but I don't know my teammates. I don't
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: really know what's going on. Like I'm going to show
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: up and I'm just going to give it whatever I can.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: But I'm going to go it with a smile and
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: with helping other teams and doing whatever we can to
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: do it the right way, Like you said, keeping the
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: speeds down and that kind of thing that you could
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: kind of cut those corners if you were like being
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: overly competitive and didn't go to those rules.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I remember I got the invite, I get just like
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: butterfly in my stomach and I'm and I'm sitting there
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: and I'm thinking like, oh no, I can't.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: I can't do it.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I said, I got to ask Matt first, because it's
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: like very gracious.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Like Matt, Matt I mean that was that was my thing.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Like if someone said, hey can you can you We're
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: doing the Camel Trophy again, I would be like burning
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Overland International down.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: I'm going.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: But but it was it was track and like that,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: like you drove that was your company car when you
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: work here. Is like the Trek, you know, it was
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: super disco too, So twenty one and have a two
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: thousand and three disco with I think it had no
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: miles on.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: It when we got it. So so Matt's Disco, the
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Trek edition that they had here at over the International
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: for a couple of years back in the early over there.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: It still had the stickers on and so they had
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: it at the event. It was at the event at
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: the event and they had some photos with it right
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: next to a brand new Defender which was really pretty slick. Yeah,
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: so I could.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: I go up to Matt and I'm like, Matt, I
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: got an invite to you gotta go. I'm like, you
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: gotta do it.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: You've always wanted to do it, and you're looking at
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: the dates and you're like, I can't do it. I'll
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: only be back from my honeymoon for one day. I
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: was so jet lagged yeah, I mean I was in
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Africa for two weeks.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Yeah, when you drank eight gallons of rose, so like
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you weren't you were ready to run? You were ready
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: to run. Yeah, yeah running, I mean I was.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I was not fit, but I was, as the Australians say,
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: very piss fit. That is fitting.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Well, congratulations Brian, you did such a I was so
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: proud of your performance and the whole team, and you
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: guys were gracious victors and I think it's a testament
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: to you and your team members for all of your skills.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: It's nice to see journalists with that level of competency
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: out competing and you guys did a great job.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: It was fun. We did it with a smile and
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: you know, uh Lindsay Von team, the stacked team. Definitely.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: They came in second and gave us a run for money.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: We knew, we knew the target, and yeah, I think
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: it was a surprise to a lot of people that
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: we pulled it up off. We did well. It was
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: like two hundred and twenty one points our team got
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: and we beat the second place team by fifty seven points. Yeah,
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: you guys crushed a little bit of a margin. It
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: was really, really fun you guys did. We played a tactic.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: We had a really good strategy in the night before
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: that we came up with and we kind of went
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: the opposite way that we knew everybody else would go,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: and we went big early. It worked and we were
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: fortunate to be with like, not with you, but get
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: to the trucks right at the beginning with you. I
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: mean we're the very first teams, Like your team was
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: first of the trucks by like a second, I mean
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: like ten feet, and we came from opposite directions, which
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: is crazy that it worked out like that, and then
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: finished the day together doing the team the team exercise
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: that everybody probably did early in the day. Our two
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: teams decided to meet there later in the day, right
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: before the end.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: And we coordinated it well. We're texting back and forth
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Brian and I was perfect. We did it and we
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: made it work.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like sweating on a high lift trying to
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: get a defender up a hill with a winching a
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: high lift with a texting in one hands. Got like,
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: we'll be there in five minutes. I got one more length.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: We're gonna make it.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: That's so awesome. It was so good. So thanks to
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: land Rover for inviting us. It was a total joy
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: to do that, so awesome.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: And also thanks to my teammates Kristen's Kristin Shaw and
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Kristin Canning. You were both fantastic and I'll go race
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: any race with you too anytime. So and we thank
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: you all for listening and we'll talk to you next time.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: Peace,
