- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: You get to come on and follow in your sister's first steps.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's footsteps.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: She's been the longest-running, well, she's done the most podcast on this podcast as a girl.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow, that's amazing.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, she holds the record.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay, we'll happy to add to the record.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there you go.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: So what do you just tell us how you're journey began where you're born and how you ended up.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, Simone and I are obviously twins, so we were born in England in 1959, and then it's strange because our paths sort of left England, so Simone came to Canada.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then I came with my husband to Asia, so we started in Hong Kong in the good old years, just before 1997.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it was that we were reverted back to China, which was kind of a sad time.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because was Hong Kong, what was it like?
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's booming, it was amazing, and actually, if I look back, I think, you know, if you look back and say, a pivotal moment in your lifetime, I would say my husband and I enjoyed Hong Kong the best.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: Is that right?
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was because it was just a happening time, it was booming.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: I was 29 hours, 30 Hong Kong, there's a lot of ex-patchets at that time, we were trying to sort of, well, dial in particular for his business, I was just the travelling spouse, but he was trying to make his mark in a career.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people were doing the same thing, but Hong Kong was just alive and what's good
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is that ready?
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then you, the 1997 was coming, so they just wanted to make their mark ahead of time and get into the business and it was just a great.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I look back so affectionately at Hong Kong.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: So what was the business there was doing?
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: How did you guys to Hong Kong?
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: So he basically he was trading in foreign exchange and then when we first got married we always I don't know why you know you look back and you think why was that why was that dream there at that stage and but but both of us had it
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: We always wanted to work, well, just wanted to work overseas, just wanted to go somewhere and experience a different culture and stuff like that.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: So when he got the opportunity, and ironically, we'd been looking for a house, I'd been doing some research in England, and we wanted a 250 year old house that had character and stuff, and we just literally found this place that I'd been doing a lot of a search
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: also been doing and then so we moved to report this house and it was a lovely period property and then literally I think the day before we was due to sign the contracts over he gets some opportunity to go to Hong Kong.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: And of course we wanted that so we you know we both sort of talked about it and we said well we've got the house we can always you know we've got the house now we can rent it and and so he went yeah exactly but it's funny I always knew when like then the night I was flying out I went a month ahead of me so I had to get someone to rent it so I stayed and we literally I was still moving stuff in when we when he left because it was literally
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: But I knew, I always knew, when I closed that gate to go Literally the night before I was due to fly out to Hong Kong.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: He was already there.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I looked back and I looked up the driveway and I thought whenever gonna live here.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and like you know You get a sense sometimes and you don't know where it comes from or why But I just thought when I was gonna come back and we never did and it's gonna be a brawl.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: You life and it was there and we love
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: Asia, and we loved everything about Asia, and it was fresh, it was new people trying to establish themselves, I guess.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: And so when you're that age, you know, that's the dream I suppose.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I kind of worry about this generation now, would they get those opportunities, why you have you have young boys or boys or you wonder will those opportunities ever come together?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to be able to work over there and
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard, yeah, I don't think so either.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then you have to have to drive.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I wonder, just with the way the culture's going and the focus is stuff, I don't think people have that ambition anymore.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think so either.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a shame.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: And it's too easy.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just too easy.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: And if you do anything, I can survive and no ambition.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, a lot of people.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then this is a series of entitlement, right?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: And whereas we never expected anything,
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: have the relative success of the parents' ad, we would have to follow the same rules.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you look back now and you think, yeah, I mean, they were good days.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, I loved Hong Kong.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: And it still has a special place in my heart.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, what year was that?
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: You said 97 was coming, so how many years did you get to spend with?
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: So we went to Hong Kong in 1988.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so you had nine years.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we had nine years.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: We had nine years.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: I knew it was great.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: There was all of X patches there.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: It was booming.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because it wasn't booming.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: Hong Kong used to be like under the British.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: And they were good times.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: There was always, so the English were crafty, you know, they colonized and they got the most out of the countries that they colonized and you saw that with Hong Kong, you saw it with India.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: But with Hong Kong, what was a bit shifting was just before, like five or four or five years before 1997 was coming, England through all the money that it had made in the
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: because they knew that was going to take a lot of the money and the Chinese weren't they were going to leave Chinese the money.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's what Chinese wanted.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oh you mean so so everything that was established I mean all the money that the big companies made they couldn't take it out of there.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they could take, they could take it to a certain degree, but the infrastructure, or everything else.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: So from a government point of view, because in England colonized it, they knew they had to get rid of that money somehow.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: And whatever project came up, they just threw them on.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so that new airport, you had a lot of money went into it.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is that right?
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: So in 1997, did they come along and say it within six months?
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: They say it's coming and when it comes, you and you, you got like three months of it out.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I don't kind of like get out.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think it was fairly, yeah, it was brutal.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, no, well, they, they've been sitting back and watching.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: And they saw the success of Hong Kong.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so they knew we could just walk right in and it's all the style.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's the solid starfish is all done.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be money in the bank.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:25[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: definitely when you look back at all the places that were colonized and I think even more so than the Americans we left and in administration where they could pick up and run with it and I and maybe that's a bias for you.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean I've been in the Philippines I look at the Philippines now and when America left all the infrastructure was in the army basis don't it wasn't it wasn't
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Right, so they were fairly sort of short-minded on that and you were there wanted the money so all the infrastructure in the army bases Great, yeah Putting it back into the Philippine government.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's nothing.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so at least the English set something up Yes, absolutely where they could step in and say okay, so now this is established you can run with it.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and they did
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so so all the businesses did they let any businesses stay and as long as you hire Chinese people now or something like that Or was it like sealator?
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: They put Chinese people in charge of these established businesses or did the business as all just kind of shut down or leave?
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so good question.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: So I can only I can only speak from the point of view that in finance Yeah, because my husband was in the money training business at that time, right, right?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: So basically what they did with with him
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: They actually didn't leave.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't want the Chinese to step in positions.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: What they did was they took a part of the money-making machine and went to Singapore and set up in Singapore.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a bit crafted.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: But which is where we're crafted?
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's it L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A-
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: I have several times.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: OK, so you can still go back.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I can still go back.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we can still go back.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: I remember back on business several times, because I was working for a company there.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: But not the same.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so I was going to say, yeah, totally, you could totally sense the difference.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because the Hong Kong Chinese had a fashion sense about them.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: So even the young girls, when they went to the office and stuff like that.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then you see the main and you could pick a mainland Chinese from a Hong Kong Chinese like East.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: He says walking down the street.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Just by the sense of dress.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, really.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: There are more western dressing in Hong Kong.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's more sort of western influence there in the clothing just in the way they handled themselves.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: And everything.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: They were confident in their level of English.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, the mainland Chinese.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: Not confident in English.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: And you could just see.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, that's cool.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's, yeah, it was very, very, very easy to pick on.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no kidding.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: And they came in their drawers, but they didn't have the business document.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, that's it.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to go and hey, look, we got a brand new office building, but if you don't know how to do business.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, exactly.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: And also they don't have the international global Pregnals, yeah, the Englander, the England had the American had.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so they haven't got the strengthen those relations.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they can go from Hong Kong back to mainland China.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we'll be good.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: You could do that anywhere.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to be an
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but it showed horribly, because that's, and of course, English didn't leave any instruction there.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think we'll see you later.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: Close the door.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: We've done this.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: We've bought you to this point.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: You're on your own.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: And also, so was that right?
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: So, so now we're looking at 29 and 30 years later.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: What would you say that difference is, like, just, it should dream.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you watched some of the news, there was a lot of unrest with the younger generation.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: When the change was happening, well, they didn't want to be like, you could see what the realm of the name language was going on.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody was scared of the word communism.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, absolutely.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is going to be restrictions.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to have the freedoms that they had.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a lot of unknowns.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, that young generation was coming up.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Rebellt.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: To some degree you can understand it.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, absolutely.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like you're used to one way life and it's going to be totally drastically different.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: Very different.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, take us with you.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, we can't.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to stay.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that was kind of a blessing and a curse to be born there.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: If you're born there when the good times are on, you love it, wouldn't it?
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: And you're probably like, ah, yeah.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be tough, right?
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, the parents and the grandparents, they've had that time.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: And they've been both, you know, they can revert back.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they started there.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: They started there, exactly.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: And they, you know, not that they'd want to, but you're going to have to.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: But they knew what to expect.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: They knew the devil to, they would knew how to go back to that kind of lifestyle, but the younger generation.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a lot of rebellion, you know, there was a lot of moves.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was on the press, a lot of unrest, you know, and it was sad to see that,
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was such a place where you felt, I can remember in the days when you used to drink heavy and you'd go to parties when you'd come back late at night and you knew if you jumped in a cab, you were going to be fine, there was no crime.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: No crime there.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: No crime.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: Everything was really easy.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: You could walk the streets at night, they felt totally safe.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: Totally safe.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, there were all those kind of things at that time.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: you know you appreciate yeah and then of course the unrest came and then it was a different sadly it was a different Hong Kong and I don't think it will ever go back yeah is I right yeah which is a shame so with the unrest there is like writing there's hate so to speak
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, a lot of writing and it was very violent, I mean people were getting killed.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: No kidding.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: The mainland Chinese were the hard rule of law.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: They were going in.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't, you know, where's the Hong Kong Chinese?
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: They still had, I mean, I remember, ironically enough, even before I was married,
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I was in the police force back then.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember there were some postings.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I even considered not knowing that I would end up going to Hong Kong then.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: There was some programs on the Hong Kong police.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought, actually.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's my way to go.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: I could go to Hong Kong.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: I was a police woman, blah, blah.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then I just decided not to.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: But even back then, it was, you know, I thought about it.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Never, why not?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's your opportunity.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: how long did you where you were caught a police for seven of years oh yeah also he presented did you get not long enough for a pensioner um yeah but you know what i was young and i decided that i would take the pensioner i'd spend it you did bad decision so so what's the pension minimum for over there for police like five years only then
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, I mean, I- Oh, oh, it goes up like you haven't done two years in God.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: I tiny little bit of money.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, you know, people are saying it could become a Muslim state, and as scary as that sounds, I think there could be right.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, all these open orders, you know, they've, of an order, they've let people in, they've let them, they've established their mosque, they've let them.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, when I was young, the Pakistanis were coming in.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: But the Pakistanis worked.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: They worked.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they were hard workers.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they were, they were trying to get ahead.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: They were trying to establish the communities they, but they built the businesses and they worked.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, I don't think so.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you spot the find a lot of the people that come in in are just trying to get on well for a rob and sell and drugs to a new legal stuff.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so what it seems like on programs that I've watched and it's funny because we've talked about this quite a bit on on this.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a lot of these countries are doing it and it seems to be by design.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's like they're trying to ruin their own country almost.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't understand.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know can it that doesn't go that well.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's like with the Liberals run and it almost seems like it is a true.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he let in it was open doors to he didn't hear so much But on the news.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: I like the states, right when he gives on the news all the time like people rush in the border because they knew that they could get in or whatever But yeah, so it seems weird to me that anybody that's supposed to be elected by the people that that in the country wouldn't be doing what's best for the country and I think
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: paying just mass immigration and without vetting and just and just having an open door policy isn't really the way to go.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's such a mystery.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because, you know, and everybody that's coming here, I mean, they get a cell phone and a big stipend and, you know, some welfare every month, you don't really have to work if you get like five roommates, you guys, the between all of you can be doing pretty good.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: And why does that have, why, why would you bring people in that you have to
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hey and support them like you know, I can understand like refugees you're coming from a war torn country But these people were just coming in but then they're getting free ride and it's weird nobody's not only that don't they they're not Accumating to a democratic society.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's so they're so they're bringing this
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: They can't show that they knew and it's not going to work so I mean I don't mind them getting yourself on the stuff but you you fit into the country that you're now coming in and there's a reason why you left that other country not just to get free stuff but I mean it's what we've advertised it's almost like people like just go there they'll give you a free this Germany same you get free this money this money you don't have to work
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: But Germany had its issues, if you've been following it, Germany had a lot of crime, and that's the first thing, that's the finger on the pulse.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: Right, that's the thing that goes up.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, look at England, the rape gangs, it's atrocious.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, unbelievable.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: Even acknowledged.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: And you get somebody like Tommy Robinson,
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: that people don't want to stand behind.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: He lived in Lushen.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: He saw it from the ground first hand.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: A cousin of his was raped.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing it by the rape gang.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: But this guy, they don't want to listen to him.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's telling the truth.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's in it.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's seen it on the ground.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: There are so backwards, not just England, German, all these countries that you get some and that stands, it says, I have enough.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: And all the countrymen that have been there forever, really, yeah, we agree with them.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: And they still, they don't care.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then I've heard of the girls trying to report these rapes, and they're calling them racist.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_01]: You can't do that.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: What do you mean?
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is insanity.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it's crazy that the...
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was the Canadian Jordan Peterson was him and his wife that first tapped into that on a social economical level and saw Tommy Robinson what he was trying to do and I really respect that they gave him airtime.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: But they were one of the first ones that gave him airtime just looking
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and seeing that there's the sort of social aspect of what's happening and you know, he's he saw it He lived it.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, so why would people turn around and go well, that's not true.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's not happening He actually witnessed it on so many different levels that he actually was the one that spoke out Yeah, and it was kind of that actually gave him that first recognition Oh, that was pressed the British press won't give nothing.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because of course the politicians and
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, they don't want to say well actually we've opened the doors we don't we got no control We're gonna just let them get on it.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: It was Tommy Robinson that took a stand Yeah, did it have any effect there was it still going on or no?
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's got a good following Oh, that's great.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: I hope it.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: I hope it it builds.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I think that's what he's of a lot of how people are feeling yeah
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: But as usual, the politicians don't have the finger on the pulse.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: They don't know what's happening in their community.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's insane.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: They don't understand what their constituents and the people of their whole country are feeling.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: They just keep letting this happen.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_01]: They can see that it's problem.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's a huge problem.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you have a whole section of London where the police won't even go in there.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's a win.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: And you definitely don't go in.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm an ex-police woman.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: Were we ever told not to go into an area that was in England?
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: No, no.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: It would go in.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: And basically, we used sorting out.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: And we would arrest people, and it would be dealt with.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the fact that police, I mean, it's horrible that the fact that police are told that they can't go into an area.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's insane.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: with a different culture it's supposed to be England man and they're here but you say they you have to simulate there's a reason why you leave a country and it used to be you left for a better life in the United States England Canada Germany yeah you went there because you wanted to try and get ahead now it's just like because it's a free ride and they know all our all our legal systems especially Canada
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a revolving door so you go there doesn't matter you can do what we want We're gonna break gangs we can just go and just break into stores on mass and just steal what we want You know, and you can't get charged if you keep it under a thousand bucks and all this stupid stuff
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: you're just inviting, you're not looking to get the cream of the crop like doctors and lawyers and just hard workers.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: You're getting a fuck drink.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: You're getting the criminal drink.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: The people, and that people that those other countries don't want, when there was open borders in the States when Biden was down the President, they were letting the jails out and say you can go as long as you go up there.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: So they're you're getting the worst of everything and then you wonder what's going on and people get in
- 21:40[SPEAKER_01]: Robbed and it's like, oh, what's happening?
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think's happening?
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you've done this to yourself to your own country It's insanity and even going back to the Hong Kong days Because because China was gonna be so limited with its communism.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: All those highly educated surgeons doctors They got the hell out
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: They went the kid to Canada.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was all right.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: It took up a lot of people came.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the Hong Kong Chinese came to Canada.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: And it was called the Brain Drain.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if you look back in the history, it's there.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: They left because they knew that they were not going to be able to survive in the same way.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Under your communist regime.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, absolutely.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: And lucky they survived.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, back in Mao days, all the intellectuals, the doctors, and all the, they're, you're gone.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: You're dead.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: This is the people's place now.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have the line.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so what they put this peasant over said now he's my doctor.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, I have book.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'll figure it over you.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it's crazy, right?
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: So the history history repeats itself.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, absolutely.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what it's like.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: You see it.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: And yet we don't learn for a lesson story.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I've said it before.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: We're head in the same exact same as communist Russia.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's happening.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's with all this socialism and this and that and the halves and how not to now all these people are like oh Charge wealth tax to the to the 1% well the 1% next could becomes the 10% and then the 50% and that is like anybody that's got more than me Right and and and that's not the way to do things You're not teaching people how to have it strive and work it to me capitalism might not be the best system But it's the best thing you got it's a hell of a lot better in communism
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, it was so telling to me when the war sort of in Iraq and Saddam Hussein and they basically shot his two sons and what was in the sons' possessions.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: by Agra and U.S.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: Dollars.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's all right.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that for me, that says it all.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: So they're spoused that they want a culture that's been so harsh in controlling and limiting its people's lives.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: And yet they want the democracies.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: Everything that comes with the democracy, they just don't want it in their country.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's it.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the thing.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you have...
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: That's like communism in a nutshell like they it looks good on paper.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's the problem.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'll everybody's equal all this But it's not it's never everybody's equal.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's them that bring it in.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna have all the money and all the meat and all the good stuff They want and then everybody else and that's what these young people don't understand
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: And part of that when the Canada was saying, everybody's a living wage, you're going to give $28,000 a year, whatever for free.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you're not building someone that's going to want to go and do something.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's better than $28,000, like $56,000, you know, places much.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: And you can do that by working, but you get this little stipend, and the young people, they're willing to take it, not see in the ramifications from it.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, and even when you go to places like I've been to China and you go and you see the architecture it was of course the the wealthy in China, which is pretty much it was they kept it to a small group of people That's what I mean, but so they built these cities within cities within cities that were barricaded by these walls.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: Okay
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, the people on the street don't see.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: They don't know.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: They don't know where the office, right?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so you look at it and you go, okay, why would you want a communist regime to have an influence and have people coming from that?
- 25:20[SPEAKER_00]: That want to just propagate
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: of all the wrongs of communism into a society that's become a democratic society and and okay for me I look at the politicians and I think that's your job you stop that you don't let it happen to it to people and communities and the welfare and stuff like that but they don't.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: So there is this you know this repetition in a history of all the things that have
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, totally not.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, and that's like part of it's in Canada anyway is the school system Yeah, everybody I think that every school should have the Gulag archipelago I've said this a million times.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: Al was down to a soldier kitchen, right?
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: He was in the Gulag and he was one of these velucky viewheads like a photographic or a really good memory Yeah, so he remembered everybody's names everybody's story and he puts it in this three vault I've got all three volumes.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: Got a braged version.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's easier to read
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: because the three volumes, you read all their court cases, which was just a joke.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, you know, there was one of the big Communisms, it was like, show me the man, I'll tell you the crime.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: Just give me somebody, because they make this shit up and then they tortured you until you sign, blah, blah, blah, and off to the good ones.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: You go.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how they built it, you know, I remember as a kid, the propaganda, you know, Russia they hide everything so if they let Western people in it was just beautiful and everybody's happy and ever, you know, but behind the scenes it was nothing like that and then of course or of course the time we learn that it is, but yeah.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's not one country in the world that communism has worked out for the people.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't work, but even everybody knows.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: Even in our generation, oh, not our generation, but maybe your kid generation now, you're young men.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: What's your step into Ukraine?
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, oh yeah, I mean it's like, and you know, you think you would learn the lessons of the wars you think they're over Yeah, but they're not you look at you look at Iraq you look what happened there you look at Russia you look at UK and you look now around Yeah, and I remember I was when I was in the police force.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and there was Muslims there.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's sort of shouting, homily, and all this guys, and at the time you're in the police force, do you think, who are these people?
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: Where are they from?
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: What are they doing?
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: Why are they coming here?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: What are they trying to achieve?
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: Even back then, when I was 18 and I was in the police force then, you were having these people.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: They wore different clothes, you weren't familiar with.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are again.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I don't know it, like, I'm all for an immigration, but like, control immigration.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: Control immigration, but people that will, will apply whatever, whatever they have, whatever their belief system is, they adapt to the place that they're coming, they appreciate the laws of that country.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's the thing.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: And they follow those laws.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: You can't leave a place where there'd be heading people and expect that we're still going to do that here.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then your daughters have to wear this burka, which is the most, I mean, you know, they're just, just the history of women, just horrific.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: And yet you think you can come into a democracy and bring that.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to work.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think so.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think what's wrong is, not enough people.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I like Tommy Robinson.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody goes, he was a thug.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, maybe he needs something to do with it.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: We've all made mistakes, we've all made mistakes, we've all thought we knew what we were doing and we knew what was best, we didn't, but then maturity comes with that.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you see the maturity in him, what he's hit is a nerve, and whether or not people want to say that nerves to roar is up to them, but it's a nerve.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's gotten so bad that people do have to take the country back.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: If it gets that bad or it's going to be like where they come from.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to be your country anymore.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, just.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I think England, I mean, even the US, and I don't know if Donald Trump and the Republican party are trying to sort of wind up England that used to be in Alabama, like Ally that was respected from being an ally, right?
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know whether that's sort of trying to say, well, you already, you already are Muslim country.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know yet, you're a Muslim country, and I don't know whether it's a wind up or, but you know, it's something that people should be waking up and thinking, okay, if that's what, you know, an ally is thinking about our country.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: Shouldn't we be waking up to the fact that it's ugly?
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: And seeing, really, that's kind of normal.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: not understanding.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're not realizing that kind of stuff's going on.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: It should be on the news all the time.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: These rape gangs, and these guys get should be thrown in jail or sent back home.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: Wherever you come from, you can go if you think you can do get away with that there, but not here.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: But it's like, it's nothing.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh no, you can't do anything to them because they're immigrants.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: So just like, what happened here?
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: All of a sudden you let these people in the country, they run and, you know, rough shot over every rule and law.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then you tie the hands of your police force that are supposed to enforce the laws of the land.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: You tie their hands behind them.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: You rest them then you're racist.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's insane.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: It is crazy.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I like the game world.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that's right.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we got to get to.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: So real quick.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: We got to finish up.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: So then you guys end up going to Singapore still trading money.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so he was running his running phoenix change in Singapore.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: And again, sort of on the travelling spouse, it wasn't actually until we came to the Philippines.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: and then by that time Dahl was just jaded with the banking and also it wasn't so much about money the foreign exchange then it became derivatives that was the hot hot thing that was going on at that time and Dahl wasn't a derivative see he knew about currencies I mean you know you could win it in his day in Hong Kong a very rich
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: Saudi Arabian family could move a money market by just wanting certain emphasis on a certain currency.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh really, so you sell or buy?
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: So a buy and it would change the market.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: So those days, I mean it was scary, but it happened a lot.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: So he kind of got out of that and you know, we were looking to, we didn't want to go back to England because Asia didn't become home then.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: had you already sold your cool old 250 year house we saw that 10 years after we yeah just actually when we were leaving Hong Kong I think we sold it because I did they're with you we're not going back and actually I had that sense as I said earlier yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: Um, someone came first and then I think we was still in Hong Kong when they decided to come They said okay, we're gonna.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I was shocked.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't never thought my dad would leave England Yeah, yeah, you know even now.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: I was so glad the mom and dad left England because it wasn't the England It was starting to change even that yeah To change not as horrible as it is now, but it was all on its way it was on it.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was happening.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was sort of yeah It was
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: No, wasn't your mum born in India?
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: She was, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: So my grandfather was a, he worked for the telegraph.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: So when England went over and they were doing communications and stuff, my grandfather worked for the telegraph then, saying, I'm telegraph poles and doing, doing the communication side of it.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: But then he became a missionary.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: And he stayed on.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: He stayed on.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Was it it was still the British Empire that's still a British Empire.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then he met a lady from Burma.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: They'd come to injure and they got married and then, you know, my mom was, some of the middle of a,
- 33:33[SPEAKER_00]: six children.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: And my mum was, I think, one of the, at that time, after the war ended, a lot of the battleships became cruise liners.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: They converted them.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so my mum came over on the HMS battery ship.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: So it now is a cruise.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't a military ship.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: And she was one of the first ones.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: She came over to England, which was 18.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, oh, so she spent a lot of time in India.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't realize that.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'll tell her.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then basically, I think things are, again, start winding out of danger.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then if the India wanted to kind of handle this, yeah.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they didn't want the initial anymore.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: And not that did the many good when they reverted back.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's kind of a, yeah.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's some of the kids were there.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_01]: They went through India.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: They spent two months in India, traveling both the boys.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: They liked it.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: But it takes a bit of getting used to this.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no, I mean, I remember ironically enough, you know, it comes full circle, so I remember I was sent on a business trip back to India and I said to Mum, okay, actually I think I'm going to Bangalore and my mom's.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's where she was.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: She was born and she was born actually, I don't think she was born in Bangalore, but anyway, I can't remember, but I remember they ended up in Bangalore and my grandfather had been responsible for building a church there.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so I said to Mom, I think I'm going to Bangalore, and it's grandest church still standing.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I wanted to go back and see it.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was still standing, and it was the irony, but it was, it was a Monday, I think.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd gone in to look for it, found it eventually.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_00]: and then there was a little sort of pastor's house behind the church and I just want to rank the doorbell and said, and the pastor came out and he must be in these eighties days.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, look, you're not going to know me, but my grandfather was one of the founders of this church and helped build it and he goes, who was he and so I said his name.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_00]: And that guy was a youth pastor.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: When you can't, yeah.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_00]: And actually, ironically, liked my mum back then.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really?
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I spent the whole afternoon there.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: No kidding.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: With the, and it was just just caught up and completely on it.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: So it was just, you know, those pivotal times that you think back and you think, wow, that was meant to be.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no totally man, that's really cool.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: So it was cool, and my mum, you know, took photos and stuff like that.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, my mum left when she was 18.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, see I thought I remember someone saying that was she was born in India.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, and I was kind of shocked But I don't remember her.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: I in my mind.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: I guess I just thought oh she was born there Maybe five or five day left and came home.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: way back then I guess you're still just a British subject and you would just have British passports or did you know so that time they opened the doors and you could come because I think some like my grandfather was English yeah yeah he would have been English but my grandmother wasn't so but basically they got the
- 36:35[SPEAKER_01]: The way to go.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_01]: So when your mom was born like what she does she have an Indian passport, but she was pretty pretty Yeah, because Interesting.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's cool.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: So back to this.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, there else he's fed up.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's had enough and we were actually going to actually build a golf course
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: in Singapore?
- 36:57[SPEAKER_00]: No, in the Philippines.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, when you kept first came to the Philippines, it was to build a goal.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: And when we both played golf, we thought this would be amazing.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that was the goal.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then we came back and then I think there was some issue over the land where we wanted to build a golf.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: And so the partners, Dahl became a partner in a company, and so there was a big dispute and then instead they decided to do a commercial building instead.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because you guys have a big tower there, right?
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so we have shareholders in a building.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: In a great a building in one of the core business districts.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, so that's cool.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that was cool.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: So, um, then I, you know, again, travelling spouse.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then I started...
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: So what year is this real quick, say, roughly?
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: That was 1995, I don't know.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: We came in 88, we left in 95, then we went to Singapore for two years, so 97.98, okay.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: Then we went to, yeah.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's never been back since.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: No, it was so, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: But it was just funny, because of course we liked the idea of a golf course.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: So when you went there that we had the states pulled out of where they stole their and the army barracks and stuff.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, they pulled out.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: They've been gone.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe is it something with private land and big tracks a land has to stay?
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, so basically what happened was you had the military bases.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, the US picked the prime spot and built, you know, around that and built their army bases.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_00]: So of course, then they have to give it back.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is that what you guys were looking at by as an old army based and turning into all of course?
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: No, but it was but most of the core business districts that now exist today are in X army bases, so they picked prime property stuff.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: But no, the golf course we wanted was actually in the north and most of the golf course is for someone a reason we're built.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean at that particular.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: And you guys are in the south, right?
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: But then at that time, they were trying to boost, because there's not many industries in the Philippines.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: You've got diving.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: They wanted a really promote golf and ratio and stuff like that.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I think they were trying to build 20 new golf courses when we arrived.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a big expansion plan, but of course, corruption.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, but it doesn't cost the rate on the silver good.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you never, you know, never actually go Where should you go isn't come out and it's still the same.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so gave up on that dream But they you had some business partners.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the business partners you guys all decide let's just build did you guys build the builder or just buy the building?
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, we built.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they'll build it.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_01]: How long did that take?
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: How many stories is it?
- 39:51[SPEAKER_01]: One of them grilled tall things?
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's really tall, so I should not have any stories, but it's big, so it's like over 20.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, over 20.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it was in a core business district that was up and coming at that particular time, because you had
- 40:07[SPEAKER_00]: Macarty, which is sort of around the capital of Manila, and then there was this two other core business districts that were building at that time, which was, well, there was three, there was Fort Bonifacio, which was the army base.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: There was Passig, and then there was another place called Alabang.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: And then they were expanding and trying to promote business, and trying to attract new businesses.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_01]: So where is your guys' building?
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: in Passeg, which is literally a little bit south of Macarce.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so I've only been there once and thank God for you.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've probably told this story on this thing, but be a trist and we're coming down.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_01]: We had like a 16 hour layover, Manila.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: Just so anybody that hasn't been to Manila.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_01]: That airport has a fast food chicken joint at one end and that's it.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then hopeless.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_01]: So thankfully, Simone, we told Simone that we were going to talk to you.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well Marion, cool, Simone.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: And because it was that on that day, I said, I said, how long can they get out of the airport?
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: I said, no, no, they can't be six and out of the airport.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: We can't leave them at night.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, get them, just tell them I'll go and pick them up.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which was awesome.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: So, nice, we got to use your shower and stay at the place and then you tour it us around.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: And now.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: uh... there was some you know like not nice places uh... but then but that one day i think we went for lunch or breakfast and that was in a business district now what's that called no so that that was actually in capital here where we went to eat which actually don't want to take you to the golf course which actually what that's what we should have done yeah you should have gone to southwards could you'd have enjoyed that with some and it's beautiful and is that what you guys are members yeah we should have gone that yeah
- 41:53[SPEAKER_00]: But then we were sort of driving around and thinking, you know, how to tell them, then I wasn't sure if you guys needed to catch up on sleep or you know, stuff like that.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we should have gone there on reflection.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, we did what we know.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: So not really a core business district.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: No, that wasn't.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's not all.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like, because that was like a really nice, felt safe area.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was good.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just sort of like more of a eating.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: So we should have went and looked at your building.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so I could say, yeah, I've seen this call.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: So how far away from that place?
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: A word, how far away from that golf course that with as a fold forward around it, just the only kind of thing.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: So the the foot is actually in going down just past McCarty.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the capital.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: So from from where down building is?
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're probably on a good day.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: You're probably looking at just on the
- 42:53[SPEAKER_01]: So from you guys' house, about an hour?
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, okay.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_01]: There's a big place.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I was shocked.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: But you've got 10 million people or something.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: There's 12 million people.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's 12 million people.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just Metro Minola alone, which is just unbelievable.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it was a cool place to see.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care to go back there.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: I would go there and then just take off to some of the things.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you went, if you were diving and you wanted to go off, you wanted to do a golf trip.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_00]: You should ever, you want to do, or I'll plan for you.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: That'd be awesome.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to go, of course, this.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think you'd probably want to go to the outer islands for the diving, because they've got some great diving spots for steam, beautiful oceans that are on spoil, so they've been very good on the conservation on those places.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: All the golf courses are on the big island though, like North and North and North.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: No, you still got someone sort of some of the outer islands as well, but it's just like you.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: the money comes in initially and then it gets funneled out and so do they care about the maintenance as much as they should do probably not.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got to go for the main golf courses because you know then they're going to maintain the greens and the fairways and the money's because back at that particular time if you wanted to run a golf course 18 holes it would cost you
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: just in just to do the greens the fairways to maintain everything in terms of just how golf course is.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Everything gross so fast down here.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_01]: Goes a membership and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: So now you guys are in the Philippines.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: Did you buy the house where you live right away there?
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: We know, so we were in a house that the partner zone that we became partner in the partnership.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: So they had a few properties.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_00]: So we started off living in one of their properties.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: And you're in a gated community there.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: But then we sort of when we felt like we weren't we didn't want to go about England at that time.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: And because we couldn't because there was not working for the bank.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: So basically we got this business.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to see.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: We can live wherever.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and then you know, so so things are going good when we first went the the pace so against the dollar was really strong.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_00]: Not more cost wasn't in power.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think there was another guy and the next military guy who was named off for getting right now.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: and their economy was doing really well and it was booming and then the Asian currency crisis hit and then a lot of people lost like we did a lot of money because we'd invested in in Asian businesses and stuff so of course the US had impacted that right so like a lot of people we'd lost all the collateral in in sort of money deals that I was doing and probably deals and stuff like that
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, because the property value is ended up going down.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Everything just dropped.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, everything in the payso just weakened horribly against the dealer.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was the time when you first went, the payso was strong.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: Very strong.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: A strongest it's ever been.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it'll ever get back to that.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: It seems to be that way.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: Things have those really good thing.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then they come up a bit, but they never make it back.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: No, not back to the Hades, and I think it's because of, I think the politics, have a lot to play at that particular time and stuff.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it was never going to go back.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was Ramos at that time.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_00]: He was ex-military.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: He controlled with a really anion fist.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: stuff and you know crime is down and so that that time in the Philippines was great.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean it's one of the one of the Asian tigers right now it's a pussycat I mean I don't even think it's pussycat it's probably a kitten yeah I mean it's just you know it's just gone just lost it yeah completely the momentum they built up at that time yeah so just yeah but you know it's it's interesting because you go to these countries you live in these different cultures and
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: And the social impact of decisions that politicians make can either bring that country up, or they drag it out, and the Philippines got dragged down.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: Markos was great.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, I mean,
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: probably as they all are corrupt, but it was a controlled corrupt.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I think not that that's a great thing, but it made a difference.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: It helped the country.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: And he was investing back.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Markos robbed it blind.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Markos just and he's wife and the way they spent and they, you know, just the...
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: They were there just to take.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't Markos the guy before I'm a suit.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, so he was Ramos.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Ramos, yeah, Ramos was good.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Ramos was a good boy.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_00]: Markos was before I think Ramos, that was in the early days, but they, I don't know why the people are very forgiving there, but they, I mean, a milder, Markos, and I mean, she's still walks around, I mean, I think she's still alive, and she's still walks around as if she owns the Philippines.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's just they, although they took the money for their own personal lifestyles.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I used to go to a golf course, and it's called...
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so it's kind of in the South.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_00]: But on one of the, a couple of the holes on this, it's got two golf courses, so it's 36 holes.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: On one of the golf courses, you look up to this sort of hill.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: And there are two houses that are joined by this walkway.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_00]: And that house was built for a party, a one night party.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: You can't eat it.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: And we're basically the women were in one house.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_00]: And the men were in another.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: And this was all built for the archbishop in one party.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: And Melda and Markos, that was houses just built for that party so that they could entertain on wine and dye their goods.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, with the golf course here.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's ironic because when you go there and you can still drive this a little dirt track that goes past it, the occupants now are goats.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's it goes live in the house.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a bar because once they have that party dead so many properties they never went back and they abandoned it And now it's just derelict and go to live in that house.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's insane.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's like it's actually the the golf course is canle bang and so you go up these sort of like You know, it's canle bang is beautiful there and the golf course is beautiful It's one of my favorite it still is one of my favorite golf courses there and if you come I would take you to canle bang Yeah, yeah, and it's Yeah, and then you see this place
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: You think the golf course would have taken it over.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_01]: They probably couldn't get it over.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: No, they couldn't get it over.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly right.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly right, Donnie.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of their properties.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, no.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_00]: We'll let it rocks.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_00]: You can't touch it.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: Don't even think of doing it.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: Don't even go there.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: So these are like wild goats.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, go.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: Coming out in the balconies.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: Going through the walkway.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a true story.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's indicative of the Philippines.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_00]: Just the opulence that was there.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_00]: Just in a collective of doing what they should have been doing for the people.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they put a few like they built there.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a few sort of monuments.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: Just to make it look like they're doing their bit.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: Which they really want.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_01]: Not running the country properly.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_01]: Just using it like they're free money or free back.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then it was ironic because I heard there was some...
- 50:39[SPEAKER_00]: a story where as a meld and rock horse okay and i'm just saying that you know i don't know if this is all true that there were rumors going round so i'll just be careful what i'm saying so she she has an affair with jewel chamilton the the american actor
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: they buy a house, so they were in a relationship, she buys a house for him, and then suddenly the relationship ends, it's just one of her affairs, the husband was having a face, she thought she'd have a few things, and then suddenly she says she wants a house back, and she also tells him, no, no, that's my house,
- 51:21[SPEAKER_01]: So he's kept it.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: So he's kept it.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: So he's kept it.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: He's like they pump you off.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so basically.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that's yeah.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know if that's my house Oh, so yeah, so those were the point right here.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I could be I could be.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so Yeah, we're almost out of an hour already really.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, but if it goes longer.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we can go longer I could do a two-part or people who just hate that I did a two-part of last week.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay
- 51:46[SPEAKER_01]: So, now we're in the Philippines, we're into the building, we got building and a few other properties on doing some investing.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm getting bored.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting bored.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to get down to a 10-handed cap I didn't.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, now I'm holding on to the fourth.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: So now, so a guy that I knew in Hong Kong has come to live in the Philippines, he wants to sell up a business.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: And so that particular business of that time.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: We were doing sort of presentations for interior design work, and everybody was using PowerPoint.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: I hated PowerPoint, and I remember talking to my business partner then and saying, is that anything else we can use is I hate PowerPoint, because you know they're reading the text quicker than you, or you're talking the text, they're reading that text quicker than you can talk it.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_00]: There's only thing else, and we had this one very talented designer.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_00]: who then introduces us to this software called 3D Max.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: And basically it's a software that can build a virtual property.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so you don't have to do sort of image boards and stuff and say this is what the office would look like.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_00]: You can actually do a floor plan and you could animate the floor plan and then you could fill that in from a 2D concept to a 3D environment.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_00]: And so I said to Terry at the time, oh my gosh, this is the way forward, this is the future totally.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry Terry, we should be doing this.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: So then we hired a few more people that had that skill set.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so we got into that business, we pioneered it in the Philippines.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody else was doing it, there was still doing the hand-drawn floor plans with a heavy material boards of what the tiles are going to look like, what the furniture, what the cabin tree is going to look like.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, you want a different color tile, click, and they can see it later on.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly so we thought you know this and of course when these people come from overseas companies They don't want to carry these heavy boards back and then I get you Yeah, yeah, so we just thought saying we'll put it on a disk Yeah, you say you go back and you show it to your board of directors The sea's the sea people in a sea level people
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: and it took off.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: And we built this business and it literally just took off.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: So you would do this for all sorts of different companies.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: They'd say, here's the floor plans and we put it into the system.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: We'd get these guys to do the plans and we were the first ones that did it.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: We've got so much business.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: We have more business than we knew what to do.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: But then I got in.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: That was a good thing.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you hit that, but people are always going to copy, right?
- 54:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you're going to jump on the badmack, and then that's what happened, and that's fine.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: But it kind of got me into sort of animation and doing stuff.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then I said to Terry, well, you know, there was some other architectural companies doing the same thing.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, well, surely, if we've done this for building work, why can't we do it for...
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: other companies, other industries, like we take that step and for tourists, right timing, I'm going into Singapore, that particular time I was going back and forth, and I'm walking through this place near one of the CBDs in Singapore, and I think it was
- 55:12[SPEAKER_00]: It was Cathay Pacific and they were trying to do a demonstration of their new business class seat.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: So they had the whole seat.
- 55:20[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_00]: I understand.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: I guess what the humidity of Singapore completely bogged up the mechanics.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: So they could show how that scene went.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not like that.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I just walked up and I said, you know, I've got some animators.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_00]: We can animate that seat for you.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so the goal just took my details and I said, just, you know, we could do an animation.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: You don't need to, what, what you're going to pay to do a prime location in Singapore.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_00]: What that's going to cost you to bring that seat there, fly it in.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's probably what we're going to cost a minute, because it's an airline.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: But if setting it up and getting the people here and paying for their hotel, we could do a presentation that would be far cheaper than that.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_00]: So again, just an opportune moment.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_01]: So did they call you?
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: They call me Two weeks later.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like telling Terry.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if there's any coming.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_00]: I gave my business on it.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I talked to them.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got an email.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_00]: I actually got an email.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and so suddenly Terry and I are being flown to to Kathy Pacific in Hong Kong.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: In front of this board of directors.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, shit.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_00]: And then basically we're on the fly, winging it, saying, well, you know, we could do this and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 56:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's just one of those opportunities, you know, you just ran with it, you just ran, I just ran with it, I'll wind it.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then, so anyway, we get call Terry and I go in our suits, you know, we go for all the sport of directors, that's funny.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then they say, well, yes, we want, we want an animation of this new business for our seat.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_00]: So we said, okay, so we can produce that.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: And then they said, but we wanted to be below the line marketing.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't want, because of course, if you're going on TV and you're an ad on TV, oh, that gets more money.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: They want it.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_00]: So they just said, if it comes under a figure of this, you can get that money straight away.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's just more money than we were getting for the
- 57:29[SPEAKER_00]: We'll take that money and then so that started.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_00]: So basically we went back, we did a brief and then more than that because I kind of was more into sort of marketing and sales.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_00]: I built round a sales thing about around this presentation.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: So we actually did a presentation that actually had the animators see it in it.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_00]: So now they go to a regional, like they go to an Asia somewhere, Kathai Pacifica going with all their, you know, through an air, China air, Singapore Airlines, and they go and these marketing goals were brilliant.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to say these young girls were smart business savvy young girls.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_00]: I spent time with them in Hong Kong, told them this is how you should pitch it, this is what you should do but they go to this regional sales conference and completely everybody's like totally so now now we're getting more business, commercial business, yeah, yeah
- 58:29[SPEAKER_01]: more airlines, like more airlines, more airlines, more money, going really good.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: So then I said to Terry my business partner, because he suffered with migraines.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so he'd gone, I had to pick him up and he'd gone to a doctor's appointments and I was, because I'd never had a migraine.
- 58:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I was just saying, well, what happens with the migraine?
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, then I can't remember how it happened.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_00]: The girls that worked for Cathy Pacific in Hong Kong have got invited to a dinner party, and there's an executive from Mark Sharp and Dome, the pharmaceutical company.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_00]: I was telling him, they introduced us and said, this is what they helped us with and gave us a really nice introduction.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_00]: Then we were talking about drugs and they were saying they need marketing materials.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_00]: So then Terry, my business partner, who basically unfortunately has migraines.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think you'd probably had one or two glasses of wine too many, says that we could simulate Well, I great, no, one of my grain is like, visually, visually What?
- 59:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yes So I'm just like, what?
- 59:48[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, all right, because I know I've experienced it stuff like this, and it, because they were trying to promote, you know, new sort of Johnson stuff.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: And Terry was saying about the migraine that he'd heard about this, and he thought it didn't know it was Mark Chopin dome.
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, again, right place, right timing.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: So now Mark Chopin dome won another more marketing materials.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_00]: And we did, we're simulated a migraine somehow.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no, apparently it's just like flushing lights.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes, that's it.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, that was easy.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, that was easy.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: This is a piece of dance.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_00]: Don't worry about it.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: There he goes.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: I can do this.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_00]: Starting on my head when I was closed.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's so epic.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, flushing lights.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_01]: I guess so.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_00]: I get some black background.
- 1:00:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm easy.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_00]: a true story so then we suddenly got pharmaceutical work so we just took off and then and then we were just promoting this this medium this software called 3D Max which is a software which was ostensibly being used for 3D walkflies or sort of walk walk walk sort of walkthroughs and building flybys so as our potential but we were sort of like
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_00]: So we just took off and so so then we did that for a few years very successfully built the business and then Terry was English
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_00]: But he had an Australian, he was still English, but he had married an Australian, but he had to go back to Australia because he had to get his residency and he had an English passport.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_00]: And so then I decided that I didn't sort of want to be in the business anymore.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, that was the first time I was going to retire.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just said to Terry, we don't like got the money out of you know the partnership Yeah, and Terry ran with it.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then Cathay Pacific Toby got about to Australia years later.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_01]: So you guys were going to shout it down here.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because we got money, we did great.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_01]: We loved it.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_01]: Show them.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_00]: So we didn't shut it down.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_00]: I let Terry Ron with it.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you knew step back, but Terry was still sort of- He was still doing it, but he wanted to go back to Australia and so in the end, I think he showed it down.
- 1:02:12[SPEAKER_00]: But like Wolf Ford for a couple of years, Cathay Pacific.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_00]: never forgot you never forgot me and I'm reached back out and I don't know obviously I've given my personal I think I'd given my personal email because I said I was pulling out the business block so one of those bogs down to the emails you send yeah yeah yeah and suddenly reached out so by this time I'm not in the business anymore but I'm actually just going on a trip to Singapore to play golf actually
- 1:02:42[SPEAKER_00]: And they said, look, you know, do you know anybody?
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, there's a couple of Singaporean studios that we talked to, so let me go and talk to them.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_00]: I said otherwise, I said, I don't know if there's anybody in the Philippines, I can do some research, right?
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, so nothing is to do the same thing you were doing for that.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_00]: But if I don't, if people notice they've been flying, but suddenly instead of these real sort of like,
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, well, like when you do the safety on the plane.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, suddenly it all went turn animated.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: We were part of that.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_00]: So, we actually brought that instead of just using it.
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_01]: Still a military, like back then.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_00]: We started it.
- 1:03:25[SPEAKER_00]: New stuff now started saying we can do to the animation.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have to use.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have to use real people.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: So it kind of started the train.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_01]: Why see instead of them standing up, you just look at you for a screen and they'll get a job.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a 2D show you how you put the seat belts on.
- 1:03:41[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what they want you to do.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_00]: So basically, so anyway, so I went to Singapore couldn't find anybody came back.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_00]: Added in a party as you do.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_00]: Got introduced to a guy that had
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_00]: a game production studio okay an American ex-sonic well we know you actually that's I'm used to the Sony executive behind building PlayStation when it first came in right so I'm going to use to him and I said so what what what if you what talent have you got if you got to the artist he said you we got animators to the artist with the artist yeah and I said you know what I think I can bring you some business
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, from cafe Pacific because I've been looking at Singapore's finding it and both are working on a video game To fill in the gap.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_01]: They'd quickly do this to make money Yeah, just been breadmutter.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so I went to see him and Got the business.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, took it to him.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: Don't a percentage of the business and said you wrong with it Yeah, all over sea on project manager.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because that's what I did You get like 25% or something or 20 or whatever Little bit more man So yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you're selling that
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, so did that.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then went to lunch with the owner of this studio called the studio of Secret Sex on the Philippines.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_01]: So the different guy than the Sony guy you already talked about.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: No no, same guy.
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_01]: Same guy.
- 1:05:06[SPEAKER_00]: So then he was chatting and he said, you know, if ever you want to get back into doing something, he said, it would be great to have somebody running, because I, I mean, he likes you, I could see that you're getting harder.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_01]: I got the client.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:05:20[SPEAKER_00]: So he said, if ever you want to get back into work, he said, you know, I'd like somebody on the ground because I live in California.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I have a studio here, but I don't want to be on the ground if he's back home.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_00]: So here's this studio.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, said, yeah, fine.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_00]: So don't try to get my handicap down to 10, failing miserably, right?
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then suddenly I'm like, I'm getting old.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so much, yeah.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm bored.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's not working.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to get my handicap down to 10.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_00]: Be realistic.
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then suddenly I thought, so then he tells me, I met him up for lunch because he kept gone down.
- 1:05:55[SPEAKER_00]: So this is now year two later, I met him for lunch.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_00]: And now I've been introduced, I've been introduced, I've got Gondon Center Health Center Pistudio, so I've skipped.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_00]: I was actually then one of his and Singapore got introduced some of the else and got offered a job in Singapore, which I did for
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_01]: nearly two years, set up for two different, back and forth, so I was saying it's close, I guess, right?
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's close, yes, well, no, no, so from Singapore to Minnesota, it's three hours, but where they set up the studio, so I had contacts then I got involved in that and helped set up two different video games too, or so basically I started out in short-form animation, I guess, that's what you term it, which was the commercial stuff.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_00]: Then again, took one client to the Philippine studio, took another client to a Singapore studio.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_00]: And the guy in Singapore, same as the guy in the Philippine said, Look, we're setting up a studio.
- 1:06:58[SPEAKER_00]: At that time, I thought it was in Singapore.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_00]: And we were just going, we just left Singapore.
- 1:07:03[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:07:03[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_00]: And at that time, you said, you know, if you can bring commercial business into this studio in Batam, which is in the rural islands, which is a 30-minute ferry ride from Singapore.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_00]: So it's Indonesian, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:15[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, if you can help me bring sort of that business, I'm interested.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I went beautiful resort in Batam.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_00]: Great golf courses.
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_00]: Which I don't know what's around golf with you.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it's all about the golf.
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then he said, okay, can you help me bring some talent?
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_00]: Can you help me sell up the studio?
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_00]: Because I built studios to help build, could be in the talents in blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, based on a very famous book in the Singaporean curriculum called Sing to the Dawn, fully animated movie, Sing to the Dawn.
- 1:08:03[SPEAKER_00]: So then he wants me to help set up the studio in Batam and bring on the talent.
- 1:08:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I said, I would do that, I'd help do that.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I was based in Batam in Indonesia.
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_00]: Got to know, and it's relevant now, because that's another jump.
- 1:08:22[SPEAKER_00]: The timing, the guy a young technical supervisor, British guy called Steve Reed, had just come off the success of happy feet.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_00]: The animated movie that was done by an Australian studio, while I think, and he was flying through Singapore, and we put some adverts out for, we needed technical people, blah, blah,
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: and so I met him, he was British, lovely young guy, introduced him to the owners of the studio, and he got the job.
- 1:08:58[SPEAKER_00]: So that made that introduction.
- 1:09:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then after that work, before I went to work for the guy in the Philippines at the present studio,
- 1:09:12[SPEAKER_00]: I was asked to set up another animation studio in Singapore for an Indian guy and Steve was not happy.
- 1:09:22[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, that movie had been released and Steve was looking for his next job.
- 1:09:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I got introduced somebody else and I said Steve you know this guy's looking you're the right age Yeah, I said, but you know, I think you need to Ask for shares in the company because you've got that talent.
- 1:09:40[SPEAKER_00]: He hasn't got it.
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so you should do that.
- 1:09:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so then I I became Co-founders Steve became a co-founder and we bought some talent One from the UK one from Canada.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_00]: We're right up from Canada.
- 1:09:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so we set up a studio called one animation
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_01]: One animation, this is back in the Philippines now.
- 1:09:57[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, this isn't Singapore.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is the one before I come.
- 1:10:01[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 1:10:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_00]: Long story.
- 1:10:04[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, fast forward, we set that studio up.
- 1:10:06[SPEAKER_00]: I then want to come back to the Philippines if I didn't have going to Singapore.
- 1:10:09[SPEAKER_00]: It was getting very political then.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I mean, at that particular time, it was Singapore.
- 1:10:14[SPEAKER_00]: Amazing.
- 1:10:15[SPEAKER_00]: You set up a studio.
- 1:10:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_00]: If you, because it's a very small community, I mean Singapore, I think there was less than a that particular time, less than a million people than Singapore.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh wow, okay, yeah.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: And they were trying to build up the animation industry before you get Lucas coming and build a his studio then, this is all before that happened.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so they want to invest in that particular industry.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_00]: So they would pay you.
- 1:10:45[SPEAKER_00]: So I got Steve to come and join that studio as we were building it.
- 1:10:51[SPEAKER_00]: The Media Development Authority of Singapore paid 50% of his salary.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Holy cow, just if you're going to set up, they just wanted people, they just wanted, they wanted people that can set up and build that industry.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_00]: They paid 50% of his salary and not only that, the co-production, the preschool show called Rob the Robot, was actually was aired in Canada.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: They actually gave us 50% towards a production cost.
- 1:11:19[SPEAKER_00]: right off the hot here you go here so you basically you say this is a talent this is a show we have a Canadian coproducer yeah and it's a preschool show and they just funded it oh no kidding because they wanted as long as you say it's made in Singapore yeah of course they want Singapore the map so that particular industry that time media right media digital blah blah this is around what 2010
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_00]: This was around 2,000 less than I think, so yes, anyway, so that happened, built that studio, worked with Steve, and then decided to come back to the Philippines.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then I just send out a box down to the email and you know, leaving one animation and coming back to the Philippines.
- 1:12:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now the guy that had the studio, ex, Sony executive, now reaches back out to me, and says, I would like you to come and help me build my studio, because it's a certain size, but I want you to expand the studio in the Philippines.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 1:12:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so I said, so what, what projects?
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'd been with Rob the Robot when you do an IP.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_00]: You don't make your money in broadcast.
- 1:12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_00]: You make it merchandise.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, OK, yeah.
- 1:12:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I know what he's sort of, was realizing it's games.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's sort of a staff.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:12:40[SPEAKER_00]: And you've got, so Steve, the guy from Happy Feet, who would be became a really good friend.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you should get a PlayStation 3 because the games are very sophisticated now, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_00]: because she said, what can I buy you?
- 1:13:02[SPEAKER_00]: I said, you know what, I'm your PlayStation 3.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_00]: And then I bought these games and the first game I bought was Uncharted.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_00]: Because I, because he said, what kind of games do you think you'd like?
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, I don't know.
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I said, I don't know.
- 1:13:14[SPEAKER_00]: What do you tell me?
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_00]: You go, as well.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_00]: There's a game, it's like you're an Indiana Jones, but you control Indiana Jones in the game.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_01]: No, okay.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_00]: And you, you soft clothes, you're bad.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_00]: That was a great treasure.
- 1:13:25[SPEAKER_00]: I thought, yeah, that sounds cool.
- 1:13:27[SPEAKER_00]: So, so then I bought on chart and in that stage it was on chart and on charted to and on charted three.
- 1:13:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Got back to the Philippines, set up my PlayStation three.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_00]: fell in love with Uncharted who's hooked and then go back to this guy Exony and I said he talks about the studio and I said well what?
- 1:13:48[SPEAKER_00]: What games have you worked on?
- 1:13:50[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, I worked in Naughty Dog.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_01]: I went, Naughty Dog.
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_00]: Naughty Dog.
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_00]: The ones that did Uncharted, he goes, yeah, he said, actually we're working on the coming up in the next game which I didn't know what it was at that time.
- 1:14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought, I want my name on the credit so that he snorched it again, but that's what I want.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_00]: So he goes, okay, I can do that, come and join me.
- 1:14:12[SPEAKER_00]: So that basically got me into that was the introduction.
- 1:14:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:14:15[SPEAKER_00]: And at that time, it was uncharted four.
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_00]: It was a thief saying it was the next one out of the uncharted, the lost legacy.
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_00]: So they were doing that in parallel.
- 1:14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:14:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then I, before I'd even, I think this is back in 2012 now.
- 1:14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_00]: They, nor she does.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Just went off, is that just some owner somewhere?
- 1:14:38[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:14:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 1:14:39[SPEAKER_00]: So then, then they're now on this next game, which is building traction.
- 1:14:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:14:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so I get that game, and it's the last of us.
- 1:14:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 1:14:50[SPEAKER_00]: Still one of my favorite games.
- 1:14:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 1:14:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:14:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:14:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so now, I'm like, oh my gosh, if this is I love on chart and I love the last of us, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be working with a team building a team for this developer, Sony, you know, which is the jewel in the crown of Sony, oh, yeah.
- 1:15:10[SPEAKER_00]: PlayStation at that time.
- 1:15:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:15:12[SPEAKER_00]: and so I thought this would be great and you know I've done short-form animation, I've done long-form animation yeah now I want to do video games and what's production like in video games and so that literally was the introduction well into video games and then that's been how long
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_00]: uh, nearly 14 years.
- 1:15:31[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's cool, yeah.
- 1:15:34[SPEAKER_00]: But I never, I've got to be honest at that particular time.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_00]: I never thought video games was a serious storytelling platform.
- 1:15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:15:44[SPEAKER_00]: I was thinking Mario Bros. Yeah.
- 1:15:46[SPEAKER_00]: This is like nothing.
- 1:15:48[SPEAKER_00]: But you didn't realize how
- 1:15:51[SPEAKER_00]: the way it's gone, that is, and even how in depth these stories go, and how invested you are.
- 1:15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, in the characters in the game, and so I learnt a lot, but you learned that in a game there's three things I think, possibly, you tell me when you play a game to me, you look at first of all, you look at the
- 1:16:15[SPEAKER_00]: The story.
- 1:16:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a compelling story?
- 1:16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_00]: Are the characters, characters, are you all invested?
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, keep going.
- 1:16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_00]: So are they characters that you want to invest in this story?
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:28[SPEAKER_00]: Playability.
- 1:16:29[SPEAKER_00]: Did you want to gain that you're going to be able to play in it?
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to feed it and enjoy it and feel you're contributing to it.
- 1:16:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:35[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's the visuals.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:16:38[SPEAKER_00]: So those are the three things for me.
- 1:16:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, now I love games.
- 1:16:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:43[SPEAKER_00]: I want all that and more in a game.
- 1:16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 1:16:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to feel that experience.
- 1:16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
- 1:16:54[SPEAKER_01]: We're running late.
- 1:16:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:16:55[SPEAKER_01]: So do you want to say somebody might, the dogs might chase someone on the property, and that's why we're here.
- 1:16:59[SPEAKER_00]: OK, so do we still?
- 1:17:00[SPEAKER_01]: We should wrap it up.
- 1:17:02[SPEAKER_01]: But this is so interesting.
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_01]: OK.
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I want, when you come back, and I see you again.
- 1:17:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so we'll do another one.
- 1:17:07[SPEAKER_01]: I will start right here.
- 1:17:08[SPEAKER_01]: We're into video games now, because you could talk for an hour on video games.
- 1:17:12[SPEAKER_00]: I can talk more than hour.
- 1:17:13[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 1:17:14[SPEAKER_00]: I can boil the pants off of you, don't you?
- 1:17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it's, and this was a really interesting story.
- 1:17:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:17:20[SPEAKER_01]: Then I hear your whole sort of Yeah, whatever you would call it the travel of where you've gone the journey to the journey area.
- 1:17:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the journey sport.
- 1:17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
