Transcript
- 0:00This is a Bible study for chapter 21 and 22 from the book
- 0:05of Jeremiah. And as a reminder, according to
- 0:10Second Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 and 17, all Scripture is God
- 0:15breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting
- 0:19and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be
- 0:24thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 0:27We ask the Holy Spirit to open our eyes and ears and inspire us
- 0:33as we read through this in Jesus name.
- 0:36Chapter 21. The word came to Jeremiah from
- 0:40the Lord when King Zedekiah sent him to Passher son of
- 0:46Melchizedei and the priest Zephaniah son of Messiah.
- 0:51They said inquire now of the Lord for us because
- 0:55Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us.
- 0:58Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders for us as in times of
- 1:02past, so that he will withdraw from us.
- 1:06So at this point, it's interesting because Jeremiah has
- 1:11been warning Judah over and over and over again and to the point
- 1:16where Jeremiah doesn't, he just doesn't even want to do what
- 1:20he's feeling from God and the message that he's getting from
- 1:24God. And now Zedekiah, who's the
- 1:28king? He was the Last King before
- 1:32Judah fell. So he's he's at the last minute
- 1:36now he's going to Jeremiah and asking Jeremiah inquire of the
- 1:43Lord because maybe God will deliver us from this.
- 1:47Like they've completely ignored all the warnings that Jeremiah
- 1:51gave them and they're wanting good news is what they want and
- 1:56and they're not listening to anything that God said.
- 1:59So Can you imagine this like just God's reaction, what that
- 2:03might be like to have been speaking to these people through
- 2:08Jeremiah over and over and over again.
- 2:11And they ignore him. And then all of a sudden, when
- 2:15it's actually the things that Jeremiah was warning them about
- 2:18start happening, then they start going to him saying, you know,
- 2:22like, maybe maybe God will take care of this like he always has,
- 2:25like people. And that's we have to look at
- 2:29this the way it is actually today too, because today we can
- 2:36be like that. We can ignore God, what God says
- 2:41in the Bible, ignore what he says the way we should live, and
- 2:45we just keep on living the way we want to live.
- 2:47We just ignore God and say, yeah, you know, God loves us,
- 2:50you know, and just not do anything, don't live like what's
- 2:55in the Bible. So we can do that, and then we
- 2:59just go about our life and we're like, oh, it's all good.
- 3:01It's all good until something bad happens.
- 3:03And then we're like, oh God, please help me.
- 3:05Please help me because I have this bad stuff coming into my
- 3:09life. But prior to that, we were just
- 3:12ignoring everything that's written in God's Word about how
- 3:15we should be living, and then all of a sudden we expect God to
- 3:19rescue us. Well, that's the same thing that
- 3:22was happening here. So what I find interesting in
- 3:25Scripture is that when we read things of the past, even though
- 3:29they are applicable to the people from the past, we can
- 3:32learn what God's reaction to that is.
- 3:36So how does God respond to the King that goes to Jeremiah and
- 3:42says, inquire of the Lord, you know, maybe he will stop like
- 3:45he's done in the past, like they're remembering the goodness
- 3:47of God. So here's what happens.
- 3:51But Jeremiah answered them. Tell Zedekiah this is what the
- 3:55Lord the God of Israel says. I am about to turn against you
- 4:00the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using
- 4:05to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians who are outside
- 4:09the wall besieging you, and I will gather them inside the
- 4:14city. I myself will fight against you
- 4:19with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, in furious anger and
- 4:25in great wrath I will strike down those who live in this
- 4:29city, both man and beast, and they will die of a terrible
- 4:34plague. After that, declares the Lord, I
- 4:39will give Zedekiah, King of Judah, his officials and the
- 4:44people in the city who survive the plague, sword and famine,
- 4:49into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
- 4:53And to their enemies who want to kill them, he will put them to
- 4:56sword. He will show them no mercy or
- 5:00pity or compassion. Furthermore, tell the people
- 5:04this is what the Lord says. See, I am setting before you the
- 5:08way of life and the way of death.
- 5:12Whoever stays in the city will die by sword, famine, or plague,
- 5:17but whoever goes out and surrenders to the Babylonians
- 5:22who are besieging you will live. They will escape with their
- 5:26lives. I have determined to do this
- 5:29city harm and not good, declares the Lord.
- 5:33It will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he
- 5:37will restore. Destroy it with fire so we can
- 5:43see like somebody might say, well, gosh, that's really harsh
- 5:46of God. Why is he doing it to those his
- 5:48people? Because he had been through a
- 5:52series of kings. He had been warning them through
- 5:55Jeremiah. He kept saying repent, repent.
- 5:58Turn back to me. Stop doing this idolatry.
- 6:01Start Stop worshipping these other gods and adopting these
- 6:05Pagan rituals and, and treat other people, you know, rule
- 6:10with righteousness and fairness and, and don't be greedy and all
- 6:15these things. He was warning them to stop
- 6:18doing those things, but they weren't, they didn't want any of
- 6:21that. They just want protection.
- 6:22They want to live life the way they want to live life, but then
- 6:25they want God's protection. Well, God will sometimes respond
- 6:31in this manner. We can see right here because he
- 6:34gave warnings and they didn't listen.
- 6:37And so he said and and any time he does this, this is it.
- 6:43It's partial judgement. I mean, it is judgement, but
- 6:48it's also with the intent of them repenting still.
- 6:53Like you're not going to listen to God when he's nice about it,
- 6:58when he's giving you warnings and nothing is happening and
- 7:00your life is still going along good.
- 7:03Just ignore him and then all of a sudden you know things start
- 7:06going bad. So then you want God to help
- 7:08out. But you know what if If God's
- 7:13been talking all this time and giving, sending messengers and
- 7:17telling people repent, change your ways.
- 7:20Live according to what you know the Word says or what His word
- 7:25has said. The commands he gave and people
- 7:28are refusing it. You have to remember back at
- 7:31this time they had all of these commands were written down and
- 7:36it wasn't until Josiah found some scrolls in a temple that
- 7:41had been ignored for many years. And then Josiah made some
- 7:45reforms in this the over the people in Judah and they started
- 7:53they promised God again they would follow and obey his
- 7:55commands. But it didn't take long.
- 7:57All of a sudden Josiah's king, our Josiah's son when he became
- 8:02king, he completely did the opposite of what Josiah did and
- 8:07was involved in idolatry, child sacrifice and all these things.
- 8:12So even though he had a good father, he produced an offspring
- 8:18that was rebellious to God. So again, God also says many
- 8:24times that you know, each person is going to be judged by their
- 8:27own actions. So good people can come from bad
- 8:34families and bad people can come from good families.
- 8:38So it's, it's an individual's choice and it's an individual's
- 8:43relationship with God, whether they are obedient or they ignore
- 8:47God. And I think we can look at this
- 8:50as a warning to us that we, we need to repent as a nation.
- 8:57I'm, I'm Speaking of the United States and I don't, I don't know
- 9:01about other nations, but I know the United States, there is a,
- 9:05a, a turning towards God by some people.
- 9:09And that's just like what history shows us in the Bible is
- 9:12that some people do turn, but others don't.
- 9:15And, and when the majority doesn't, then that brings about
- 9:22judgement. And a lot of times God will use
- 9:26enemies to bring about judgement and to bring about people so
- 9:31they finally repent because God ultimately wants people to turn
- 9:36to him. He wants people to be in his
- 9:38Kingdom. But some people are really hard
- 9:40headed. They call it stiff necked in the
- 9:43Bible. And they don't turn away from
- 9:46their sin. They keep staying in their sin.
- 9:48And that's what the whole Bible talks about, is the sin
- 9:53separates us from God. And when we finally realized
- 9:58that, like, do we want to be separated from God?
- 10:02And do we want the repercussions of being separated from God?
- 10:07Because all it is is negative. All it is is destruction and
- 10:14eternal darkness and eternal torment.
- 10:18That's what is promised to people who reject God.
- 10:22So do we really want that? And it's not easy to make that
- 10:27decision to follow God, to ultimately become a Christian,
- 10:33to follow Christ because it sometimes comes with
- 10:37persecution. And we're seeing that in our
- 10:39world today where Christians are being persecuted, they're being
- 10:42executed in some countries because of their faith.
- 10:48And, and this is what, as the times continue, what Bible
- 10:54prophecy tells us is that this is going to get worse and worse.
- 10:59And so it's so important for us to establish a relationship with
- 11:04God and have a strong relationship with God because
- 11:08how are we going to withstand persecution when it comes to
- 11:13that level? And it is worth it to be an
- 11:17eternity, but that's something that people need to to ask
- 11:23themselves. And it says that faith comes
- 11:25from hearing the word of God and hearing the, the gospel message.
- 11:30So when we the gospel message is about eternity, it's about what
- 11:35God has planned for us. It's about what God's, the
- 11:38inheritance that God has planned.
- 11:40It was originally promised to Israel.
- 11:43And then because of Israel's rejection of God, it was opened
- 11:47up to all nations like God. And it says that God will, will
- 11:52use Israel to bless others. And I recently had a in a Bible
- 11:59study where the subject of slavery came up.
- 12:03And I'm not going to address it because that could be a really
- 12:05long topic. But I found something really
- 12:08interesting in Scripture where it made me question of whether
- 12:14in the very, very end of times, in the very last days, will it
- 12:19be that Israel helps redeem other nations out of slavery?
- 12:25Because when we look at what the Bible says about slavery, it's
- 12:30not the same as what the Americans or the USA thinks
- 12:33about slavery. These are different.
- 12:35This is a different type of slavery.
- 12:37It was, it was different, a different way of doing this, but
- 12:42basically the Israelites took somebody in like as a member of
- 12:49their family and they participated like if they, they
- 12:52were required to have them circumcised so they could
- 12:55participate in the Passover and they became part of the family,
- 12:59like part of the inheritance. And so when scripture tells us
- 13:03that all will be blessed through Israel, I just wonder if that
- 13:08really means that in the very end of times that there will be
- 13:12survivors of Israel that will basically redeem other people
- 13:17and nations, those who repent and and turn to God.
- 13:22If if that is, if that is something that Israel will be a
- 13:27part of, like adopting them, of course that is through Jesus
- 13:32ultimately that that happens. So in a sense that is what's
- 13:38planned. When you think about it in that
- 13:40sense, it is, you know, Jesus is from the tribe of Judah.
- 13:46He is the way, the truth and the life.
- 13:49No one comes to the Father except through him and he is the
- 13:54Messiah. He is what makes us be able to
- 13:59get into the Kingdom of God. And so we are blessed through
- 14:05Israel, through Jesus, who opens up the door to eternity for us.
- 14:11So it's it's really interesting that how how much of this all
- 14:17points to Jesus when we really understand what's in Scripture.
- 14:23OK, let's continue in verse 11. Moreover, say to the royal House
- 14:27of Judah, hear the word of the Lord.
- 14:29This is what the Lord says to you.
- 14:31House of David, administer justice every morning.
- 14:34Rescue from the hand of the oppressor, the one who has been
- 14:37robbed or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because
- 14:42of the evil you have done. So God is very clear about why
- 14:46he's angry, why this wrath is coming on people because of the
- 14:51evil they've done. They're not administering
- 14:53justice. They are not working with the
- 14:55oppressors. They're not the one who has been
- 14:57robbed. They're not doing the right
- 14:59thing. And he says because of the evil
- 15:03you have done, burn with no one to quench it.
- 15:06I am against you, Jerusalem, you who live above this valley on
- 15:11the rocky plateau, declares the Lord.
- 15:13You who say, who can come against us, Who can enter our
- 15:17refuge? I will punish you as your deeds
- 15:21deserve. We always have to keep in mind
- 15:24and remember that God is righteous and he is just.
- 15:30So if he brings about wrath, it's just.
- 15:34It is, it is just and it's the right thing, like God is doing
- 15:37the right thing. I will punish you as your deeds
- 15:41deserve, declares the Lord. I will kinder a fire in your
- 15:45forest that will consume everything around you.
- 15:48And that's the end of chapter 21.
- 15:50I'll read the questions and answers for this chapter.
- 15:54Why did Zedekiah seek advice from a despised prophet?
- 15:58Perhaps the proverb Any port in a storm best describes King
- 16:03Zedekiah motives in sending an official delegation to Jeremiah.
- 16:08With Nebuchadnezzar approaching the city gates, the panicky king
- 16:13sent emissaries to Jeremiah, hoping for an 11th hour
- 16:17reprieve. With his back to the wall,
- 16:20Zedekiah was forced to admit what he had tried to deny.
- 16:24If he wanted to hear from God, he knew Jeremiah was the one to
- 16:29turn to. Who was Nebuchadnezzar?
- 16:32He was a king of the Babylonian Empire from six O 5 to 562 BC.
- 16:37His name was literally a prayer to a Babylonian God.
- 16:41It meant Nabu protect the crown. The story of Nebuchadnezzar's
- 16:49two sieges of Jerusalem and his deportations of the Jews is
- 16:54found in Second Kings chapter 24.
- 16:58Why would God fight against his own people?
- 17:01There are several reasons. Number one, his people had
- 17:04repeatedly sinned, breaking the covenant promise, promises they
- 17:08had made. Number 2.
- 17:10They had continually rejected God's call through the prophets
- 17:13to repent #3 they now faced certain judgment.
- 17:18God sometimes uses sinful people or nations as His instruments of
- 17:24judgment. Why would God kill the animals
- 17:28when a city was under siege and goods became scarce, epidemics
- 17:33were common and affected both people and animals.
- 17:37In addition, animals suffered along with their owners because
- 17:41of the consequences of rebelling against God.
- 17:45Because the people had refused God's appeals, He brought
- 17:49Nebuchadnezzar to carry out their punishment, and their
- 17:53livestock were caught in the middle.
- 17:56And that's the end of the questions and answers for
- 17:58chapter 21. So we'll go into 22.
- 18:02This is what the Lord says. Go down to the palace of the
- 18:05king of Judah and proclaim this message there.
- 18:08Hear the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit
- 18:11on David's throne, you, your officials and your people who
- 18:15come through these gates. This is what the Lord says.
- 18:19Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the
- 18:23oppressor, the one who has been robbed.
- 18:29Do not do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the
- 18:34fatherless, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this
- 18:38place. For if you are careful to carry
- 18:42out these commands, then kings who sit on David's throne will
- 18:46come through the gates of this palace, riding in Chariots and
- 18:50on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people.
- 18:54But if you do not obey these commands, declares the Lord, I
- 18:58swear by myself that this place will become a rune.
- 19:02For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of
- 19:06Judah. Though you are like Gilead to
- 19:09me, like the summit of Lebanon, I will surely make you a
- 19:14wasteland, like towns not inhabited.
- 19:18I will send destroyers against you, each man with his weapons,
- 19:23and they will cut up your fine cedar beams and throw them into
- 19:27the fire. People from many nations will
- 19:30pass by the city and will ask one another why has the Lord
- 19:33done such a thing to this great city?
- 19:36And the answer will be because they have forsaken the covenant
- 19:40of the Lord their God and have worshipped and served other
- 19:44gods. Again, God does not mess around
- 19:47with idolatry. Any false gods he will punish
- 19:50for that. Do not weep for the dead king or
- 19:55mourn his loss. Rather weep bitterly for him who
- 19:59is exiled because he will never return nor see his native land
- 20:04again. For this is what the Lord says
- 20:06about Shalom, son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of
- 20:11Judah, but has gone from this place.
- 20:15He will never return. He will die in the place where
- 20:19they have led him captive. He will not see this land again.
- 20:24Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper
- 20:28rooms by injustice, making his own people work for nothing, not
- 20:32paying them for their labor. He says I will build myself a
- 20:36great palace with spacious upper rooms.
- 20:39So he makes large windows in it, panels it with cedar, and
- 20:43decorates it in red. Does it make you, does it make
- 20:48you a king to have more and more cedar?
- 20:52Did not your father have food and drink?
- 20:55He did what was just was right and just, so all went well with
- 21:00him. He defended the cause of the
- 21:03poor and needy and so all went well.
- 21:07Is that not what it means to know me?
- 21:10Declares the Lord. But your eyes and your heart are
- 21:15set only on dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood, and on
- 21:22oppression and extortion. Therefore, this is what the Lord
- 21:26says about Jehoiah. Jehoiah, king, kin, son of
- 21:32Josiah, king of Judah. They will not mourn for him.
- 21:36Alas, my brother, alas, my sister, they will not mourn for
- 21:39him. Alas, my master, alas his
- 21:42splendor. He will have the burial of a
- 21:44donkey dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.
- 21:51Go up to Lemidan and cry out. Let your voice be heard in
- 21:54Bashun. Cry out from AB Arim, for all
- 21:58your allies are crushed. I warned you when you felt
- 22:03secure, but you said I will not listen.
- 22:06This has been your way from your youth.
- 22:08You have not obeyed me. The wind will drive all your
- 22:12shepherds away, and your allies will go into exile.
- 22:16Then you will be ashamed and disgraced because of all your
- 22:20wickedness. You who live in Lebanon, who are
- 22:23nestled in cedar buildings, how you will groan when pangs come
- 22:28upon you, Pain like that of a woman in labor.
- 22:32As surely as I live, declares the Lord.
- 22:35Even if you, Jeho Chen, son of Jeho A Kim, King of Judah, were
- 22:41a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off.
- 22:47I will deliver you into the hands of those who want to kill
- 22:50you, those you fear. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon
- 22:54and the Babylonians. I will hurl you and the mother
- 22:58who gave you birth into another country where neither of you was
- 23:03born, and there you will both die.
- 23:06You will never come back to the land you long to return to.
- 23:11Is this man, Jehoiachin, A despised broken pot, an object
- 23:17no one wants? Why will he and his children be
- 23:21hurled out, cast into a land they did not know?
- 23:24Oh, land, land, land. Hear the word of the Lord.
- 23:30This is what the Lord says. Record this man as if childless,
- 23:35a man who will not prosper in his lifetime, for none of his
- 23:40offspring will prosper. None will sit on the throne of
- 23:44David, or rule in Judah, or rule any more in Judah.
- 23:50And that's the end of chapter 22.
- 23:54O I'll read the questions and answers and then we'll wrap this
- 23:57U Could Jerusalem have been saved?
- 24:00It would appear so from these verses.
- 24:03Why then, Why then do earlier verses say Jerusalem was beyond
- 24:07hope? Perhaps those verses actually
- 24:10came later in time went than this passage.
- 24:12At times the stories in Jeremiah appear to be strung together in
- 24:16random order. Some think a later editor
- 24:19possibly rearranged the chapters for various reasons.
- 24:22Others think the book was arranged thematically, not
- 24:26chronologically, so that some sections that appear to be out
- 24:30of place are there intentionally to support a a certain theme.
- 24:35Or it may be that the earlier verses show that God knew even
- 24:40before the people rebelled, that he would do just that.
- 24:46Why did God swear by himself? Because everything God says is
- 24:50utterly and completely true. He doesn't need oaths to
- 24:54buttress the reliability of his pronouncements.
- 24:57Yet for greater impact and to under score the seriousness of
- 25:01God's message, it is not uncommon to see this rather
- 25:05human expression used to describe God's words.
- 25:09It reminds us again that God's words, word, cannot be broken.
- 25:15Whom did they weep for? The dead king was Josiah, who
- 25:19died in battle during an I'll fated encounter with Pharaoh
- 25:24Nicho of Egypt. Josiah had been a good king and
- 25:29the loss was keenly felt by the people of Judah.
- 25:32However, his death was not so tragic when compared to the fate
- 25:38awaiting his son. Jeremiah recommended that they
- 25:41save their tears for Josiah's son Jehoah has who would die in
- 25:46exile. Sad as it was to die in office,
- 25:50it was worse to be banished to a foreign land and never see Judah
- 25:55again. What does it mean to know the
- 25:58Lord is simply helping the poor and needy enough to know God?
- 26:03We must not confuse the evidence of a relationship with God with
- 26:08the means to having that relationship.
- 26:12Throughout Scripture we are told that it is by faith alone that
- 26:17we receive forgiveness, salvation, and a personal
- 26:21relationship with God. One sign that a person knows God
- 26:25intimately is the person's desire to follow God's will.
- 26:30King Josiah's compassion and justice for the poor
- 26:34demonstrated his love for the Lord.
- 26:38What did it mean to have the burial of a donkey?
- 26:41Then, as now, heads of state were typically given great
- 26:45ceremonial funerals. Even incompetent and unpopular
- 26:50rulers received some burial courtesies.
- 26:54Jehoiakim's depraved and wicked reign, however, ended with the
- 26:58greatest indignity of all, no burial at all.
- 27:04Like a donkey thrown into the field as carrion for the
- 27:07vultures, his body lay exposed and humiliated.
- 27:11The wicked king who brought Jerusalem to its lowest level
- 27:15had no one to mourn his death. Where were these places?
- 27:20Lebanon, Bashan, and Abraham, also known as Pisgah, represent
- 27:26the land of Judah in its entirety, from north to
- 27:31northeast to South SE. The totality of the destruction
- 27:36coming on Judah was the point of Jeremiah's statement.
- 27:40The term allies probably refers to Egypt and others on whom
- 27:45kings of Judah had relied for protection from the Babylonians.
- 27:50What was a signet ring? A signet ring bore a seal that
- 27:55represented a King's authority. Its imprint validated government
- 28:00documents such as laws, treaties, decrees, and
- 28:04correspondence in the name of the king.
- 28:07Since it represented his authority, the king would remove
- 28:11it only if he authorized another person to act on his behalf.
- 28:16King Jehovah Chin was called to validate the Lord's decrees and
- 28:21lead the people into obeying them as though he were God's
- 28:25signet ring. But since he had failed to
- 28:28represent God, Jehovah Chin was a defective ring.
- 28:33He would be judged and removed from his position.
- 28:37And that wraps up chapters 21 and 22.
- 28:42So chapter 23 is going to be a good one because this is where
- 28:47it starts to talk about Jesus. So come back for that one.
