- 0:16SpaceX is preparing for its fourth test flight of the
- 0:18Starship rocket from its Starbase facility in Texas.
- 0:23It's approximately 2 months after the third flight reached
- 0:25space but was lost upon re entry.
- 0:28This upcoming test represents the fastest turn around for
- 0:31Spacex's mega rocket and Super Heavy booster from its launch
- 0:34site in Boca Chica along the Texas coast, the southernmost
- 0:38tip of Texas if you will. Now, since April of 2023, SpaceX
- 0:42has been attempting to achieve orbit with the Starship.
- 0:45The third attempt in March saw the Starship make it to space
- 0:48but failed during re entry. Now, following each test flight,
- 0:51SpaceX undergoes a mishap investigation led by the Federal
- 0:55Aviation Administration or the FAA, and it implements necessary
- 0:59changes before the next launch. The FAA, alongside NASA and the
- 1:02National Transportation Safety Board, has been conducting a
- 1:05mishap investigation since the March test flight.
- 1:09Now, should the FAA grant SpaceX a modified launch license, the
- 1:13company aims to attempt the 4th test flight of Starship and a
- 1:16Super Heavy booster as soon as June 5th.
- 1:19Now, SpaceX has released its findings from the third test
- 1:22flight and detailed the modifications made to the
- 1:25Starship to address previous issues.
- 1:27Now the third flight was the most successful yet, with
- 1:29Starship reaching space and attempting a landing burn for
- 1:32the first time, although both the rocket and the booster were
- 1:35ultimately destroyed before achieving a controlled landing.
- 1:38Now during the third flight, Super Heavy booster began its
- 1:41boost back burn for landing, but encountered issues when 6 Raptor
- 1:45engines shut down prematurely. The booster was lost
- 1:48approximately 1500 feet above the Gulf of Mexico about 7
- 1:52minutes after launch. And SpaceX identified the root
- 1:54cause of the boost back burn shut down as filter blockages in
- 1:58the liquid oxygen supply to the engines, which led to a loss of
- 2:01inlet pressure in the oxygen turbo pumps.
- 2:04And engineers have since added more hardware inside the oxygen
- 2:07tanks to improve filtration and prevent blockages.
- 2:11Additionally, the third flight Starship rates the coast phase
- 2:15in space and successfully conducted a payload door test
- 2:18demonstrating propellant transfer by moving fuel from one
- 2:21thing to another. And this fuel transfer
- 2:23capability is crucial for future missions, including Nasas
- 2:26Artemis program for lunar missions.
- 2:29However, each entering the coast phase Starship lost its ability
- 2:34to control its position, which led to a unplanned re entry.
- 2:38The lack of altitude control caused more heating than
- 2:41anticipated, resulting in the vehicles destruction about 40
- 2:44miles above Earth nearly 50 minutes into the flight.
- 2:48Now SpaceX traced the issue with Starship to clogging in the
- 2:51valves responsible for vehicle roll control, and in response,
- 2:55the company has added additional roll control thrusters to
- 2:58provide redundancy and improve the liability during future
- 3:01flights. Now the FA as review process was
- 3:04expedited this time because neither the Starship nor the
- 3:07Super Heavy booster were destroyed by the vehicle's
- 3:10automated flight safety system. They said during Flight 3,
- 3:14neither vehicles automated flight safety system was
- 3:16triggered and no vehicle debris impacted outside of predefined
- 3:20hazard zones. Now, pending the FA as finding
- 3:23of no public safety impact, a license modification for the
- 3:26next flight can be issued without formal closure of the
- 3:29mishap investigation As SpaceX has conducted a launch dress
- 3:33rehearsal in May and is aiming for a launch as soon as June 5th
- 3:36providing regulatory approval is received and if the 4th test
- 3:40flight achieves its landing goals, the Starship will launch
- 3:43from Texas and splash down in the Indian Ocean.
- 3:45The SpaceX has fueled its Starship mega rocket stepping up
- 3:48preparations for the upcoming test flight.
- 3:52Now the latest pre launch operation known as a wet dress
- 3:54rehearsal or AWDR took place on May 28th at Spacex's Starbase
- 3:59site in Texas and the company loaded large quantities of
- 4:03liquid oxygen and liquid methane into Starships first and 2nd
- 4:06stages known as Super Heavy and Starship or just chip and
- 4:10Starship and Super Heavy loaded more than £10 million of
- 4:14propellant in a rehearsal ahead of flight 4 launch is targeted
- 4:18for as early as June 5th pending regulatory approval.
- 4:22This is the second W jets rehearsal for the Starship
- 4:25vehicle, the first occurring on May 20th.
- 4:28Now these tests are part of the pre launch preparations for
- 4:31Starship's fourth flight which could launch on June 5th,
- 4:34pending approval of course. Now the first three Starship
- 4:37test flights took place in April 2023, November 2023 and March
- 4:4214th of this year. Each flight was demonstrated
- 4:45improved performance and this first flight saw the vehicles
- 4:49two stages failed to separate ending 4 minutes after the
- 4:52flight and it was pretty spectacular.
- 4:54Go back and watch it on YouTube, it's pretty amazing and in
- 4:58contrast the third flight lasted about. 50.
- 5:00Minutes ending when the Starship broke apart during RE entry into
- 5:05Earth's atmosphere. That's a pretty big jump, but
- 5:07the primary goal for the 4th flight, according to SpaceX.
- 5:12Is to. Get through Max re entry heating
- 5:15when fully stacked Starship stands nearly 400 feet tall.
- 5:19It's 122 meters, making it the largest and the most powerful
- 5:24rocket ever built. It's designed to be fully and
- 5:27rapidly reusable. And eventually, Starship will be
- 5:31transforming spaceflight, potentially enabling Mars
- 5:33settlements and other ambitious exploration feeds by making them
- 5:37economically feasible. NASA supports this vision,
- 5:40having selected Starship as the first crude lunar Lander for its
- 5:44Artemis moon program. And Starship is scheduled to
- 5:48land NASA astronauts on the moon and around 2025 as part of the
- 5:52Artemis 3 mission. However, the vehicle must
- 5:55successfully complete several test flights before carrying
