- 0:00What's up y'all? It's Friendsly.
- 0:03We are halfway through the week and welcome to Wednesday's
- 0:08podcast episode. Today we're closing out Matthew
- 0:11chapter 23. And we've seen up until this
- 0:15moment that Jesus has been speaking with some very strong
- 0:19language. He is just rebuking the
- 0:23religious leaders, calling them blind, foolish and very
- 0:28hypocritical. This was because they had grown
- 0:30so hardened to the truth that they were actually leading those
- 0:35that they were teaching astray. And scripture is so clear,
- 0:39specifically Second Peter 2 that says when leaders distort truth,
- 0:45it brings destruction. And this is not just on those
- 0:49they're teaching, but also to themselves.
- 0:52And so we see the weight of that in Jesus rebukes in the passages
- 0:57prior to this one. But then today, everything
- 1:01changes because right after that sharp condemnation, Jesus does
- 1:06not stay in anger. He actually grieves.
- 1:11And this passage might be tempting to kind of skim over
- 1:15because it is so short, so brief, but I want us to slow
- 1:20down and sit with it today because this moment is so
- 1:25meaningful. And it actually parallels very
- 1:28beautifully with Psalm 131, which is the scripture that I
- 1:32picked out ultimately that the Lord led me to to root this
- 1:37podcast in. It's about being in a resting
- 1:42position as a quieted soul, like a child with their mother or
- 1:47father. And so today we are going to be
- 1:50reading Matthew chapter 23, verses 37 through 39.
- 1:56This is titled Jesus grieves over Jerusalem again, Jerusalem,
- 2:02Jerusalem. You who kill the prophets and
- 2:05stone those sent to you. How often I have longed to
- 2:09gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under
- 2:14her wings. And you were not willing.
- 2:17Look, your house is left to you desolate.
- 2:21For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say blessed
- 2:26is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 2:30OK, that last line that we see, blessed is he who comes in the
- 2:35name of the Lord. That is coming directly from
- 2:38Psalm 118. This is one that celebrates
- 2:41God's saving power and deliverance.
- 2:44So Jesus is pointing them back to Scripture that they know and
- 2:47showing them that they're actually missing the whole point
- 2:51of it. And what we see here is not just
- 2:54disappointment, it's grief. That is what Jesus is feeling
- 3:00and grief. He is experiencing pain of
- 3:05longing for closeness that's actually being refused because
- 3:10Jerusalem was not just any city. Jerusalem is the capital of
- 3:14Israel, of God's chosen people, and it's where the temple was
- 3:19literally standing, the earthly dwelling place of God's
- 3:23presence. It's even where King David
- 3:25lived. This is the greatest king Israel
- 3:27ever had, and the very line that Jesus the Messiah comes from.
- 3:33So God designed Jerusalem to be the center of worship, a place
- 3:38meant to display His justice and His mercy to the outside world.
- 3:43And it still holds a place in God's redemption plan.
- 3:47But over time, especially as we see the religious leaders
- 3:52failing in their calling and teachings, the people grew more
- 3:56blind and insensitive to their desperate need for God.
- 4:01And Jesus is grieving that. So for today's relevance with
- 4:06this passage, what struck me is how much it mirrors us today.
- 4:12Because God created us for His glory to be displayed among the
- 4:17nations like Psalm 96.3 says, and for us to know Him in
- 4:22relationship. Now something even more
- 4:26significant, Our bodies have become the dwelling place of His
- 4:31Spirit. Like guys, the holy God of the
- 4:36universe chooses to live in our human bodies.
- 4:41That should stop us. But how often have we twisted
- 4:47that design? If we think about it, how often
- 4:50do we take what God intended for his glory and we make it about
- 4:54ourselves for our comfort, for our pleasure, for our
- 4:59preferences? And we can become numb to the
- 5:02very reason why we exist. I believe there's a human
- 5:07tendency to take what God designed as good and to layer
- 5:11our own ideas onto it. And because we're sinful human
- 5:15beings, we end up distorting something holy.
- 5:19And the Lord brought some examples to my mind as I was
- 5:22reflecting on this. First of all, one example would
- 5:26be rest being commanded by God. It's a good thing, but it can
- 5:32slowly become apathy or excuse making and laziness if we're not
- 5:37careful. Maybe food and exercise.
- 5:40These are things to steward God's creation, our temple that
- 5:44He has made us. But they can even turn into
- 5:47gluttony or idolatry. Think about sex being designed
- 5:53as a gift within marriage, but it gets twisted into sexual
- 5:56immorality or adultery. Y'all the heart of all of this
- 6:02truth is you exist to worship God and to display his glory.
- 6:08So I just want to ask ourselves, is there anything in our lives
- 6:13that has shifted into our own version instead of God's
- 6:17version? Are you aiming to showcase his
- 6:21goodness in everything you do or quietly building your own glory?
- 6:27And as we wrestle with these questions, look again at the
- 6:31heart of Jesus. Because here we see it is
- 6:34tender, it is compassionate, it is full of longing.
- 6:40And what's funny is last night at Bible study, we were reading
- 6:44through John 17. This is Jesus praying in the
- 6:48Garden of Gethsemane right before his arrest and betrayal
- 6:52and crucifixion. He's praying for himself, his
- 6:56disciples and future believers. That's us, and we were talking
- 7:02about how essential and crucial it is to truly pause and reflect
- 7:07on the depth of God's love shown through Jesus here.
- 7:12Go back and read John 17 because it is super powerful and
- 7:16intimate. But ultimately, if we do not
- 7:19grasp how deeply we are loved by our Father, we won't love
- 7:24others. Well, First, John 411 says that
- 7:28when we love others, God's love is perfected in us.
- 7:32The way that we love people is one of the clearest ways that we
- 7:36point them and attract them to Jesus.
- 7:39So that's been heavy on my heart lately.
- 7:42I've actually been praying for a softer, more tender heart.
- 7:46And so reading this passage this morning felt like God was just
- 7:50answering that prayer in real time because Jesus longs to
- 7:54gather his people together. He's not indifferent.
- 7:57He's not cold to this. In Psalm 131, it paints the
- 8:03image of a child resting in its mother's lap.
- 8:07And here Jesus uses the image of a hen gathering her chicks under
- 8:12her wings. It's pointing us to who he is.
- 8:17Our God is our protector. He's our provider and he's our
- 8:21comforter and the word comforter.
- 8:25So God gave me this word for 2026.
- 8:29I always choose a year, a word for the year.
- 8:32And honestly, I resisted it at first because I think I tend to
- 8:37think of it as a negative term when really it is actually not
- 8:44all that. Umm, I usually think of strength
- 8:48as endurance and pushing through and holding it all together.
- 8:53But already, and we're barely into the year, God has been
- 8:57reshaping my understanding of comfort, and He's been showing
- 9:01me that He actually delights in comforting His children.
- 9:05It's not a burden to Him. And I'll probably do a full
- 9:09episode on this whole revelation for me later because I don't
- 9:14have enough time to go into this.
- 9:15But we see it here on full display.
- 9:19Y'all. Jesus is grieving because his
- 9:22people were not willing. And that is tragic because it's
- 9:27so simple. I don't know if y'all have
- 9:29listened to the song Privilege by Abby Gamboa.
- 9:32If you haven't, also go listen to that.
- 9:34It is one of my top five favorite songs.
- 9:37But it says in the lyrics it's easier than anything to be the
- 9:42one to just receive. It is so true because all we
- 9:47have to do is say yes, all we have to do is invite the Father
- 9:51in. But sometimes we're so busy
- 9:56wanting to prove that we can do this life on our own out of
- 10:00pride or fear or possibly have it, that we miss the rest that
- 10:06He's offering. Jesus says Matthew 1128, Come to
- 10:11me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you
- 10:16rest. And then we see John 15-4,
- 10:19remain in me, abide in me. It is so simple.
- 10:24We come to Him, we remain in him.
- 10:28All that's required of us is willingness to go to Him.
- 10:33And really, who knows your needs better than your own Creator?
- 10:38So as we reflect on all of this, let's go ahead and closeout in
- 10:42prayer. Dear Father, thank you for your
- 10:49tender heart that is revealed in Jesus in this passage.
- 10:54Thank you that you do not withdraw when we resist, but you
- 10:58grieve because you love us so completely and fully.
- 11:05Would you redirect our hearts toward your original design?
- 11:10Illuminate where we have substituted your glory to try to
- 11:16build our own. Would you reign us back under
- 11:20your wings when we wander away? When we go astray?
- 11:25Remind us that you're near Lord, that you are so, so
- 11:29compassionate, and that you are attentive to our prayers and to
- 11:33our cries. God, may we receive your comfort
- 11:38without resisting it. Would you form our lives into
- 11:43direct reflections of Your love unto others?
- 11:48May we love our neighbors as ourselves and love you with all
- 11:52of our heart, soul, and mind as Your Scripture commands us.
- 11:57We choose to come to you, Jesus. We choose to remain in You, and
- 12:01we believe that Your care is more than enough.
- 12:05Your grace is sufficient for us today.
- 12:08We ask this all in Your name, Jesus.
- 12:10Amen. OK, continuing to pray for you
- 12:13guys. I hope that this passage of
- 12:16scripture just ministers to your heart and that the Lord
- 12:20continues speaking over y'all. Hope you all have a great rest
- 12:23of your day.
