- 0:00Circumcision is that of the heart in the spirit, and not in the letter
- 0:05Romans to twenty nine. It is the melancholy remark of an excellent man that
- 0:10he who now preaches the most essential duties of Christianity runs the hazard of being
- 0:15esteemed by a great part of his hearers a setter forth of new doctrines.
- 0:21Most men have so lived away the substance of that religion, the profession,
- 0:26whereof they still retain that no sooner are any of those truths proposed which difference
- 0:31the spirit of Christ from the spirit of the world, than they cry out,
- 0:35Thou bringest strange things to our ears. We would know that these things
- 0:39mean, though he is only preaching to them Jesus and the Resurrection, with
- 0:45the necessary consequence of it. If Christ be risen, ye ought then to
- 0:49die unto the world and to live wholly unto God. A hard saying.
- 0:54This is to the natural man who is alive unto the world and dead unto
- 0:58God, and one that he will not readily be persuaded to receive as the
- 1:02truth of God. And lets it be so qualified in the interpretation as have
- 1:07neither use nor significance left. He receiveth not the word of the Spirit of
- 1:14God taken in their plain and obvious meaning, their foolishness unto him. Neither
- 1:19indeed can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. They are perceivable
- 1:25only by that spiritual sense which in him was never yet awakened, for want
- 1:30of which he must reject as idle fancies of men. What are both the
- 1:34wisdom and the power of God? That circumcision is that of the heart,
- 1:40in the spirit, and not in the letter. That the distinguishing mark of
- 1:44a true follower of Christ, of one who is in a state of acceptance
- 1:49with God, is not either outward circumcision or baptism or any other outward form,
- 1:55but a right state of soul, a mind and spirit renewed after the
- 1:59image of Him that created. It is one of those important truths that can
- 2:04only be spiritually discerned. And this the Apostle himself imitates in the next words,
- 2:09whose praise is not of men, but of God, As if he
- 2:14had said, expect not whoever thou art, who thus followest Thy Great Master,
- 2:21that the world the one who follow him not will say well done,
- 2:25Good and faithful servant, Know that the circumcision of the heart. The seal
- 2:30of thy calling is foolishness to the world. Be content to wait for thy
- 2:36applause till the day of Thy Lord's appearing. In that day shalt thou have
- 2:39praise of God in the great assembly of men and angels. I design first
- 2:46particularly to inquire wherein this circumcision of the heart consists, and secondly to mention
- 2:53some reflections that naturally arise from such an inquiry. I am first to inquire
- 3:00wherein that circumcision of the heart consists which will receive the praise of God.
- 3:06In general, we may observe it is that habitual disposition of soul, which
- 3:12in the Sacred Writings is termed holiness, and which directly implies the being cleansed
- 3:16from sin, from all filthiness, both of flesh and spirit, and by
- 3:22consequence, the being endowed with those virtues which were also in Christ Jesus,
- 3:27the being so renewed in the spirit of our mind as to be perfect as
- 3:31our Father in Heaven is perfect. To be more particular, circumcision of heart
- 3:38implies humility, faith, hope, and charity. Humility, a right judgment
- 3:44of ourselves cleanses our minds from those high conceits of our own perfection, from
- 3:49that undue opinion of our own abilities and attainments, which are the genuine fruit
- 3:53of a corrupt nature. This entirely cuts off that vain thought I am rich
- 4:00and wise and have need of nothing, and convinces us that we are by
- 4:03nature wretched and poor and miserable, and blind and naked. It convinces us
- 4:11that in our best estate we are of ourselves all sin and vanity, that
- 4:15confusion and ignorance and error reign over our understanding, That unreasonable, earthly,
- 4:23sensual, devilish passions usurp authority over our will, in a word, that
- 4:28there is no whole part in our soul, that all the foundations of our
- 4:32nature are out of course. At the same time, we are convinced that
- 4:38we are not sufficient of ourselves to help ourselves, that without the Spirit of
- 4:43God we can do nothing but add sin to sin. That is He alone
- 4:47who worketh in us by his almighty power, either to will or to do
- 4:51that which is good, it being as impossible for us even to think a
- 4:57good thought without the supernaturalist system of His Holy Spirit, as to create ourselves
- 5:03or to renew our whole souls in righteousness and true holiness, a sure effect
- 5:10of our having formed this right. Judgment of the sinfulness and helplessness of our
- 5:14nature is a disregard of that honor which cometh of men, which is usually
- 5:18paid to some supposed excellency. In us, he who knows himself neither desires
- 5:25nor values the applause which he knows he deserves. Not. It is therefore
- 5:30a very small thing with him to be judged by man's judgment. He has
- 5:33all reason to think, by comparing what it has said, either for or
- 5:38against him, with what he feels in his own breast, that the world,
- 5:43as well as the God of this world, was a liar from the
- 5:46beginning. And even as to those who are not of the world, thought
- 5:49he would choose, if it were the will of God, that they should
- 5:54account of him as of one desirous to be found a faithful steward of his
- 5:59LOFs towards goods. If haply this might be a means of enabling him to
- 6:03be of more use to his fellow servants. Yet, as this is the
- 6:06one end of his wishing for that approbation, so he does not at all
- 6:12rest upon it, For he is assured that whatever God wills, he can
- 6:16never want instruments to perform such He is able even of those stones to raise
- 6:23up servants to do his pleasure. This is the lowliness of mind which they
- 6:29have learned of Christ, who follow his example and tread in his steps.
- 6:33And this knowledge of their disease, whereby they are more and more clansed from
- 6:38one part of it, pride and vanity, disposes them to embrace with a
- 6:42willing mind. The second thing implied in circumcision of the heart, that faith,
- 6:46which alone is able to make them whole, which is the one medicine
- 6:51given under heaven to heal their sickness. The best guide of the blind,
- 6:57the surest light of them that are in darkness. The most perfect instructor of
- 7:00the foolish is faith. But it must be such a faith as is mighty
- 7:05through God. To the pulling down a strongholds, to the overturning all the
- 7:10prejudices of corrupt reason, all the false maxims revered among men, all evil
- 7:15customs and habits, all that wisdom of the world, which is foolishness.
- 7:19With God has cast this down, imaginations, reasoning, and every high thing
- 7:26that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringeth into captivity every thought.
- 7:30To the obedience of Christ. All things are possible to him. Thus
- 7:35believeth the eyes of his understanding being enlightened, he sees what is his calling,
- 7:42even to glorify God, who hath bought him with so high a price,
- 7:46in his body and in his spirit, which now are God's by redemption
- 7:50as well as by creation. He feels what is the exceeding greatness of this
- 7:56power, who, as he rise up Christ from the dead, so is
- 8:00able to quicken us dead in sin by his spirit, which dwelleth in us.
- 8:05This is the victory which overcomes the world, even our faith, that
- 8:09faith which is not only an unshaken assent to all that God hath revealed in
- 8:13Scripture, and in particular to those important truths. Jesus Christ came into the
- 8:20world to save sinners. He bear our sins in his own body on the
- 8:24tree. He is the perpetuation for our sins, and not for ours only,
- 8:28but also for the sins of the whole world. But likewise, the
- 8:33revelation of Christ in our hearts a divine evidence of conviction of His love,
- 8:39his free, unmerited love to me a sinner, a sure confidence in his
- 8:43pardoning mercy wrought in us by the Holy Ghost, a confidence whereby every true
- 8:50believer is enabled to bear witness. I know that my Redeemer liveth, that
- 8:54I have an advocate with the Father, and that Jesus Christ the Righteous is
- 9:00my Lord and the propitiation for my sins. I know that He hath loved
- 9:05me and given himself for me. He hath reconciled me, even me to
- 9:09God, and I half redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.
- 9:16Such a faith as this cannot fail to show evidently the power of Him
- 9:20that inspires it, by delivering his children from the yoke of sin and purging
- 9:24their consciousness from dead works, by strengthening them so that they are no longer
- 9:30constrained to obey sin and the desire thereof But instead of yielding their members unto
- 9:35it as the instruments of unrighteousness, they now yield themselves entirely unto God,
- 9:41as those that are alive from the dead. Those who are thus by faith
- 9:46born of God have also strong consolation through hope. This is the next thing
- 9:50which the circumcision of the heart implies. Even the testimony of their own spirit,
- 9:56with the spirit which witnesses in their hearts that they are children of God.
- 10:01Indeed, it is the same spirit who works in them that clear and
- 10:05cheerful confidence that their heart is upright toward God, that good assurance that they
- 10:11now do, through His grace, the things which are acceptable in His sight,
- 10:15that they are now in the path which leadeth to life, and shall,
- 10:18by the mercy of God, endure therein to the end. It is
- 10:22He who giveth them a lively expectation of receiving all good things at God's hands,
- 10:28a joyous prospect of that crown of glory which is reserved in Heaven for
- 10:33them. By this anchor, Christian is kept steady in the midst of the
- 10:37waves of this troublesome world, and preserve from striking upon either of those fatal
- 10:41rocks, presumption or despair. He is neither discouraged by the misconceived severity of
- 10:46his Lord, nor does he despise the riches of his goodness. He neither
- 10:52apprehends the difficulties of the race set before him to be greater than he is
- 10:54strength to conquer, nor expects there to be so little as to yield in
- 10:58the conquest till he has put forth all effort the experience he already has in
- 11:05the Christian warfare, as it assures him his labor is not in vain.
- 11:09If whatever his findeth to do, he doeth it with all his might.
- 11:13So it forbids his entertaining so vain a thought, as that he can otherwise
- 11:18gain any advantage, as that any virtue can be shown, any praise attained
- 11:24by faint hearts and feeble hands, or indeed by any but those who pursue
- 11:28the same course with the great apostle of the gentiles, I says he,
- 11:33So run not as uncertainly so fight. I not as one that beatth the
- 11:37air. But I keep under my body and bring it into subjection, lest
- 11:43by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be
- 11:46cast away. By the same discipline, is every good soldier of Christ to
- 11:50injure himself to endure hardship, Confirmed and strengthened by this, he will be
- 11:56able not only to renounce the works of darkness, but every appetite too,
- 12:01and every affection which is no subject to the law of God. For every
- 12:05one saith Saint John, who hath this hope purifieth himself, even as he
- 12:09is pure. It is his daily care, by the grace of God in
- 12:13Christ and through the blood of the Covenant, to purge the inmost recesses of
- 12:18his soul from the lust that before possessed and defiled it, from uncleanness,
- 12:22and envy, and malice and wrath, from every passion and temper that is
- 12:26after the flesh that either springs from or cherishes his native corruption. As well,
- 12:33knowing that he whose very body is the temple of God, ought to
- 12:37admit into it nothing common or unclean, and that holiness becometh that house forever
- 12:43where the spirit of Holiness vouchsafes to dwell. Yet lackest thou one thing,
- 12:48whosoever thou art that to a deep humility and a steadfast faith, has joined
- 12:54a lively hope, and thereby, in a good measure, cleans thy heart
- 12:56from its thin bred pollution. If thou wilt be perfect, add to all
- 13:01these charity, add love, and thou hast the circumcision of the heart.
- 13:07Love is the fulfilling of the law, the end of the commandment. Very
- 13:11excellent things are spoken of love. It is the essence, the spirit,
- 13:16the life of all virtue. It is not only the first and great command,
- 13:20but it is all the commandments in one. Whatsoever things are just,
- 13:26whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are amiable or honorable, If there be
- 13:31any virtue, if there be any praise, They are all comprised in this
- 13:37one word love. In this is perfection and glory and happiness. The royal
- 13:43law of heaven and earth is this, Thou shalt love the Lord, thy
- 13:48God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
- 13:50all thy mind, and with all thy strength. Not that this forbids us
- 13:54to love anything besides God. It implies that we love our brothers also.
- 14:00Nor yet does it forbid us, as some have strangely imagined, to take
- 14:05pleasure in any thing but God. To suppose this is to suppose the Fountain
- 14:09of holiness is directly the author of sin, since he has inseparably annexed pleasure
- 14:16to the use of the those creatures which are necessary to sustain the life he
- 14:20has given us. This therefore can never be the meaning of his command.
- 14:24What the real sense of it is. Both our blessed Lord and his apostles
- 14:28tell us too frequently and too plainly to be misunderstood. They all with one
- 14:35mouth. Bear witness that the true meaning of those several declarations, The Lord
- 14:39Thy God is one. Thou shalt have no other gods but me. Thou
- 14:43shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy strength. Thou shalt cleave unto
- 14:48him. The desire of thy soul shall be to His name. Is no
- 14:52other than this. The One perfect God shall be your one ultimate end.
- 14:56One thing shall you desire for its own sake, the fruition of Him that
- 15:01is all in all, one happiness. Shall ye propose of your souls,
- 15:07even a union with Him that made them, the having fellowship with the Father
- 15:11and the Son, the being joined to the Lord in one spirit, one
- 15:15design. You are to pursue, to the end of time, the enjoyment
- 15:18of God in time and in eternity. Desire other things so far as they
- 15:24tend to this. Love, love the creature as it leads to the Creator.
- 15:28But in every step you take, be this the glorious point that determines
- 15:31your view. Let every affection and thought, and word and war be subordinate
- 15:37to this. Whatever ye desire or fear, whatever ye seek or shun,
- 15:41whatever ye think, speak, or do, be it in the order of
- 15:43your happiness in God. The soul end us well, a source of your
- 15:50being. Have no end to ultimate end but God. Thus our Lord,
- 15:56one thing is needful. And if thine eye be singly fixed on this one
- 16:00thing, thy whole body shall be full of light. Thus, Saint Paul,
- 16:04this one thing I do I press toward the mark for the prize of
- 16:08the high calling in Christ. Thus, Saint James, cleanse your hands,
- 16:12he sinners, and purify your hearts he double minded. Thus, Saint John,
- 16:18love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
- 16:21For all that is in the world. The lust of the flesh, the
- 16:23lust of the eye, and the pride of life is not of the Father,
- 16:26but is of the world. The seeking happiness in what gratifies either desire
- 16:30of the flesh by agreeably striking upon the outward sense, the desire of the
- 16:36eye, of the imagination by its novelty, greatness or beauty, or the
- 16:41pride of life, whether by grande or power, or the usual consequence of
- 16:45them applause and admiration, is not of the Father cometh, not from neither
- 16:52is approved by the Father of spirits, but of the world. It is
- 16:56the distinguishing mark of those who will not have him to reign over them.
- 17:00Thus have I particularly inquired what that circumcision of heart is which will obtain the
- 17:06praise of God. I am in this second place to mention some reflections that
- 17:11naturally arise from such an inquiry, as a plain rule, whereby every man
- 17:15may judge of himself, whether he be of the world or of God.
- 17:18And first, it is clear from what has been said that no man has
- 17:22the title to praise of God unless his heart is circumcised by humility, unless
- 17:26he is little and base and vile in his own eyes, unless he is
- 17:30deeply convinced of that inbred corruption of his nature, whereby be as very far
- 17:36gone from original righteousness, being prone to all evil, averse to all good,
- 17:41corrupt and abominable, having a caral mind which is enmity against God,
- 17:45and is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be unless
- 17:49he continually feels in his inmost soul that without the Spirit of God resting upon
- 17:55him, he can neither think, nor desire, nor speak, nor act
- 18:00anything good or well pleasing in his sight. No man, I say,
- 18:03has the title to the praise of God. Till he feels his want of
- 18:07God, nor indeed till he seeketh that honor which cometh of God only,
- 18:12and neither desires nor pursues that which cometh of man, unless so far only
- 18:18as it tends to this. Another truth, which naturally follows from what has
- 18:22been said, is that none shall obtain the honor that cometh of God unless
- 18:26his heart be circumcised by faith, even a faith of the operation of God,
- 18:32unless refusing to be any longer led by his senses, appetites, or
- 18:36passions, or even by that blind leader of the blind, so idolized by
- 18:41the world. Natural reason he lives and wants by faith, directs every step
- 18:45as seeking Him that is invisible, looks not at the things that are seen,
- 18:49which are temporal, but at the things that are not seen, which
- 18:53are eternal, and governs all his desires, designs, and thoughts, all
- 18:57his actions and conversation, as one who has entered in within the veil where
- 19:03Jesus sits at the right hand of God. It were to be wished that
- 19:07they were better acquainted with this faith, who employ much of their time and
- 19:11pains in laying another foundation in grounding religion on the eternal fitness of things,
- 19:15in the intrinsic excellence of virtue and the beauty of actions flowing from it,
- 19:19on the reasons, as they term them, of good and evil, and
- 19:23the relations of being to each other. Either these accounts of the grounds of
- 19:27Christian duty coincide with the scriptural or not. If they do, why are
- 19:33well meaning men perplexed and drawn from the weightier matters of the law by a
- 19:37cloud of terms, whereby the easiest truce are explained into obscurity. If they
- 19:41are not, then it behooves them to consider who is the author of this
- 19:45new doctrine, whether he is likely to be an angel from heaven who preaches
- 19:48another gospel than that of Christ. Jesus, though he were God, not
- 19:53we hath been pronounced his sentence? Let him be accursed our gospel, as
- 19:59it knows no other foundation of good works than faith, or of faith in
- 20:03Christ. So it clearly informs us we are not His disciples, while we
- 20:07either deny him, or to be author or his spirit, or to be
- 20:11inspirer and perfector both of our faith and works. If any man hath not
- 20:17the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. He alone can quicken
- 20:21those who are dead unto God can breathe into them the breath of Christian life,
- 20:26and so prevent a company and follow them with His grace as to bring
- 20:30their good desires to good effect. And as many as are thus led by
- 20:34the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. This is God's
- 20:38short and plain account of true religion. In virtue and other foundations. Can
- 20:44no man lay from what has been said. We may thirdly learn that it
- 20:48is none truly led by the spirit unless that spirit bear witness with his spirit
- 20:55that he is a child of God, unless he see the prize and the
- 20:59crown before him him and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. So
- 21:03greatly have they erred who have taught that in serving God we ought not to
- 21:07have a view of our own happiness. Nay, but we are often and
- 21:11expressly taught of God to have respect, unto recompensive reward, to balance toil
- 21:18with the joy set before us these light afflictions with that exceeding weight of glory.
- 21:23Yea, we are aliens to the covenant of promise. We are without
- 21:26God in the world until God, of his abundant mercy hath begotten us again
- 21:32unto a living hope of the inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth
- 21:37not away. But if these things are so, it is high time for
- 21:41those persons to deal faithfully with their own souls, who are so far from
- 21:47finding in themselves this joyful assurance that they fulfill the terms and shall obtain the
- 21:52promise of that covenant. As to quarrel with the covenant itself and blaspheme the
- 21:57terms of it, to complain they are too severe, and that no man
- 22:03ever did or shall live up to them. What is this but to reproach
- 22:06God as if he were a hard master, requiring of his servants more than
- 22:11he enables them to perform, As if he had mocked the helpless works of
- 22:15his hands by binding them to impossibilities, by commanding them to overcome where neither
- 22:22their own strength nor grace was sufficient for themselves. These blasphemers might almost persuade
- 22:26those to imagine themselves guiltless, who, in the contrary extreme hope to fulfill
- 22:33the commands of God without taking any pains at all. Vain hope that a
- 22:37child of Adam should ever expect to say the Kingdom of Christ and God,
- 22:41without striving, without agonizing first to enter in at the straight gate, that
- 22:47one who has conceived and born in sin, and whose inward parts of very
- 22:52wickedness, should once entertain a thought of being purified as his Lord is pure,
- 22:57unless he treads in his steps and take up his cross daily, unless
- 23:02he cut off his right hand and pluck out the right eye and cast it
- 23:07from him, that he should ever dream of shaking off his old opinions,
- 23:11passions, tempers, of being sanctified throughout in spirit's soul and body, without
- 23:17a constant and continued course of general self denial. What less than this can
- 23:22we possibly infer from the above cited words of Saint Paul, who living ill
- 23:26infirmities and reproaches in necessities and persecutions, in distress for Christ's sake, who
- 23:33being full of signs and wonders and mighty deeds, who having been caught up
- 23:37into the Third Heaven, yet reckoned as a late author, strongly expresses it
- 23:44that all his virtues would be insecure, and even his salvation in danger without
- 23:48this constant self denial. So run I says he not as uncertainly, so
- 23:55fight I not as one that beatth the air, which he plainly teaches us
- 23:59that he who does not thus run, who does not thus deny himself daily
- 24:03does run uncertainly and fighteth to as little purpose as he that beatth the air
- 24:10to as little purpose does he talk of fighting the fight of faith as vainly
- 24:15hope to attain the crown of incorruption. As we may lastly infer from the
- 24:18preceding observations, whose heart is not circumcised by love, love cutting off both
- 24:25the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride
- 24:27of life, engaging the whole man, body, soul, and spirit in
- 24:32the ardent pursuit of that one object is so essential to a child of God
- 24:37that without it, whosoever liveth is counted dead before him. Though I speak
- 24:41with the tongues of men and angels and have not love, I am a
- 24:45sounding brass or a tinkling symbol. Though I have the gift of prophecy,
- 24:49and understand all mysteries and all knowledge. And though I have all faith so
- 24:55as to remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. Nay,
- 24:59though I I give my goods to feed the poor, and my body
- 25:02to be burned, and have not love, it profit me nothing. Here,
- 25:06then, is the sum of the perfect law. This is the true
- 25:08circumcision of the heart. Let the spirit return to God that gave it with
- 25:14the whole train of its affections, unto the place from whence all the rivers
- 25:18came thither, Let them flow again. Other sacrifices from us he would not,
- 25:23but the living sacrifice of the heart he hath chosen. Let it be
- 25:27continual offered up to God through Christ in flames of holy love. And let
- 25:33no creature be suffered to share with him. For he is a jealous god
- 25:37his throne. Will he not divide with another. He will reign without arrival.
- 25:42Be no design, no desire admitted. There but what has him for
- 25:47its ultimate object. This is the way wherein those children of God once walked,
- 25:51who, being dead, still speak to us desire not to live,
- 25:55but to praise his name. Let all your thoughts, words, and works
- 25:59to his glory. Set your heart firm on Him, and on other things
- 26:03only as they are in and from Him. Let your soul be filled with
- 26:07so entire a love of Him, that you may love nothing but for his
- 26:11sake. Have a pure intention of heart, a steadfast regard to His glory
- 26:17in all your actions. Fix your eyes upon the blessed hope of your calling,
- 26:22and make all the things of the world minister unto it. For then
- 26:26and not till then, is that mind in us which also in Christ Jesus,
- 26:30When in every motion of our heart, in every word of our tongue,
- 26:34in every work of our hands, we pursue nothing but in relation to
- 26:38Him and in subordination to His pleasure. When we too neither think, nor
