- 1:50All right, Jabba, we got Charlie in.
- 1:53We're going to talk some baseball with him, but you've
- 1:55got something important to go into.
- 1:58We've got Jabba rules. Jabba rules rules.
- 2:05Like the streaks in my britches. I've always like the job rules
- 2:09now. And it's so awesome that you
- 2:12brought Charlie in for this because this was one of those,
- 2:16one of those rules where I, I wanted to get into it.
- 2:20And obviously now having Charlie on is, is huge.
- 2:24But winter meetings are very anti climactic for me this year.
- 2:29And we knew. We kind of knew.
- 2:31What was what? Was going to happen in the names
- 2:34that we saw, but there wasn't. There wasn't anything that like
- 2:39struck me where it was surprising or anything or any
- 2:44team did anything. And I don't know if that's
- 2:48because they're, they're looking at what's going to happen with
- 2:51the CBA or they're, they're looking at that and as far as
- 2:55like certain things that are happening in the game and
- 2:57evolving. But for me, it was like the
- 3:01winter meetings were it, it didn't do much for me.
- 3:05I usually get excited around this time, like being a part of
- 3:08it and doing it and understanding like kind of what
- 3:12they do. And like the back end that we
- 3:14don't see when, you know, guys are sliding in the back door
- 3:17and, and, and having meetings with, with the owners and the
- 3:20presidents and all the other stuff.
- 3:23But this year just didn't really do anything for me.
- 3:26And we got basically what, 3 big signings, kind of maybe Edwin to
- 3:33the Dodgers was a little bit surprising, but we didn't have a
- 3:38Tucker. We didn't have anybody else that
- 3:41we, we thought might happen. And so for me, what didn't rule
- 3:47in winter meetings was the winter meetings.
- 3:50I, I, I think it was, it was very mundane and very boring.
- 3:55And Charlie, do you think the CBA like is, is it affecting
- 3:59this is as far as like all the things that are happening or, or
- 4:04or am I overthinking it? Well, you, you triggered
- 4:07something that I read today trying to think it was
- 4:11attributed to, but it was just kind of a group thing.
- 4:14And it's going to be back on with you guys, by the way, that
- 4:19the winter meetings used to be a bigger deal before social media
- 4:24and texting became such a big thing because it was when people
- 4:28got in front of each other. And actually now it's just like
- 4:34a shake of a hand. And you know, but it's not like
- 4:38they don't see each other, talk to each other because they're
- 4:42texting even while they're at the winter meetings where it
- 4:44used to be like face to face made something happen.
- 4:47Now it's, I basically heard one GM wasn't quoted saying we could
- 4:54not have the winter meetings and the same things would take place
- 4:59that took place. Maybe you wouldn't have had Pete
- 5:01Alonso drive from Tampa to Orlando to meet with Orioles
- 5:05people and seal the deal if there weren't a winter meetings
- 5:10and he was driving an hour and a half from his home in the Tampa
- 5:14area to Orlando to do this. But they said, you know, they're
- 5:17saying, really deals are going to happen after the winter
- 5:21meetings are over because everybody is texting all the
- 5:24time and talking all the time. And so it isn't the like this
- 5:27big thing where you get everyone together and something huge is
- 5:30going to happen at that moment. And that's maybe what makes it
- 5:34different than what it used to be.
- 5:40You know. We can blame it again on texting
- 5:42and social media. You know what's so funny?
- 5:45And I want to, I want to get into the New York Mets because
- 5:49we had our own take to it, Charlie.
- 5:51And there's a lot going on with the New York Mets over here.
- 5:54A lot of fans want to just completely drop the hammer on
- 5:57David Stearns and Steve Cohen. Your thoughts on the New York
- 6:02Mets in this absolute debacle? What you know, I can see, you
- 6:09know, they send Brandon, MO to a big deal and maybe they thought
- 6:13that it was going to project out the way they had hoped to think.
- 6:17They saw a way to get out of the length of that deal even by
- 6:21Marcus Simeon, an older player who's making more money in the
- 6:24short term. They lost Edwin Diaz over $3
- 6:30million over the course of that deal.
- 6:33So basically, it didn't come down to money for Edwin Diaz.
- 6:37If if $3,000,000 at that point wasn't going to make a
- 6:40difference. If he still wanted to be a Met,
- 6:43they could have matched that deal or he could have taken that
- 6:46deal if he really wanted to be with the Mets.
- 6:50But then, you know, after you've lost him and you're coming down
- 6:55to Pete Alonso and you figure Alonso was pissed the way things
- 7:02went last year, right? He got a two year deal with an
- 7:06out after one year to become a free agent again and that they
- 7:10told him they weren't going to go more than three years.
- 7:12So sure, if you're him, you're coming off another great year
- 7:15production wise. You're the all time Mets home
- 7:18run leader. Why wouldn't you see if
- 7:20somebody's going to give you 4 or five years and then they
- 7:24weren't even involved in it after that point, which OK,
- 7:29there's a long way to go in the offseason, but where is there
- 7:33another player who's going to produce what Pete Alonso does
- 7:36offensively? Are you, if you get Cody
- 7:39Ballinger, seems like he wants to be back with the Yankees if
- 7:43they make the right deal, you're not getting Bellinger.
- 7:47So who else is going to produce and provide those kind of
- 7:52numbers right now with the line? If they have, OK, put Mark
- 7:55Vientos in it first or maybe you get William Contreras.
- 7:59Come on. Contreras is not Pete Alonso
- 8:01offensive now, Not even close. So I don't know where they come
- 8:06up with those numbers, but unless you have a presence
- 8:09behind Juan Soto, good luck paying them all that money to
- 8:13walk 150 times. That's what's going to happen.
- 8:16Charlie, I got an idea because I've been hearing that
- 8:19Philadelphia just gave Schwaber a lot of money, Well, enough
- 8:23money. I wouldn't say a lot of money,
- 8:24but a fair, a fair contract, $30 million that you're hearing that
- 8:28Bryce Harper could be available. Do the Mets trade for Bryce
- 8:31Harper and move him to first base.
- 8:33That gives you that solidify. I don't know if it's it's Pete
- 8:36Alonzo power numbers, but it gives you that power in the
- 8:39lineup. And and by the way, Juan Soto
- 8:41and him are very close. So maybe something like that.
- 8:44Do you see that happening? They say there's no chance in
- 8:49the world. Dave Browse Dave Dombrowski is
- 8:52trading Bryce Harper to the Mets.
- 8:55There is nothing that they will get back the the Phillies.
- 9:00The Phillies are still in in that by giving Schwarber the
- 9:04money. And last year, you know, they
- 9:07they locked up their starting pitching and, you know, maybe
- 9:11they might lose one of their starters this year.
- 9:14If they do anything else, they're going to get another
- 9:15starting pitcher to solidify the rotation.
- 9:19But the Phillies to me, are still on the cusp of a team that
- 9:22that's a World Series contender. They're in the at the age of
- 9:26their players, especially if they signed Rio, Rio Muto,
- 9:29they're in win now mode again. Charlie, what do you what do you
- 9:33think too on, on that? Sorry to cut you off, but what
- 9:35do you think too like obviously with Preston being in the front
- 9:39office with the Phillies, what do you think adding Donnie
- 9:42Baseball to to that? And I had the fortunate
- 9:46pleasure, obviously, to to be with Topper and and Kevin Long
- 9:50and those guys. What do you think he adds to
- 9:53that dynamic of of the clubhouse and and on the bench?
- 9:58He's Donnie Baseball, you know, everybody wants.
- 10:03By the way, that Air Committee missed, missed on it missed.
- 10:08But, but I mean, Bryce Hopper is a student of the game, the
- 10:12history of the game. He's one of the most
- 10:14knowledgeable players about baseball and sports in general.
- 10:19He'll tell you the third string long snapper is on Division 3
- 10:23football teams. This guy's locked in on
- 10:25everything. So believe me, whatever
- 10:28knowledge that he can pull out of Don Matley that can help him
- 10:32or help his team win, he's going to do and he's going to want
- 10:35everybody else to be part of that also.
- 10:38And, you know, you have their manager who was part of that
- 10:42group also in New York, I mean, so well and you know.
- 10:47What people don't understand about what Topper did, Topper
- 10:51ran everything. He literally spring training.
- 10:53He was there at 4:30 shaving his beard.
- 10:56He shaves every day. He was there running everything
- 10:59like Thomas ran everything and he's unbelievable.
- 11:05I don't think he gets it. It took him so many years in
- 11:08people that know the game as you've been around it.
- 11:11Thomas went from every level of everything that he did and he
- 11:15was very well deserving. The only other person that I
- 11:19have come encounter with that should be a manager that hasn't
- 11:24is Sandy Elmar. How is?
- 11:27Sandy Almar Junior, how is that? How is that not happening?
- 11:32How is that not happening at the same time, at the same time this
- 11:38year? I want to ask you this, too.
- 11:41We're we're in New York playing the Yankees, the Nationals in
- 11:44late August. And Willie Randolph's walking
- 11:47around behind the cage, right? He's he's, he's like, I didn't
- 11:54even get to it, right? I didn't even get to it.
- 11:58And I what I wanted to ask Willie because I became close
- 12:02with Lou Pinella when he managed in Tampa Bay.
- 12:04And I was there calling their games.
- 12:06And, you know, these are to me, Lou's royalty, right?
- 12:10Lou Pinella. And you know, he went through a
- 12:13lot with prostate cancer and, you know, his body took a toll.
- 12:19And when you see Lou, he he looks every bit of 81 years old
- 12:23now. He does He doesn't look like the
- 12:25Lou you remember. But I said to Willie, how did
- 12:27Lou look on your stomach? Yankees old timer say.
- 12:30And he goes, you know, he kind of like rallied and like come
- 12:32back. And it was like the Lou you
- 12:34knew. And I'm thinking as I'm talking
- 12:36to him and I said to will, I said, Willie, how are you not
- 12:38working in bed? How are you not teaching
- 12:41baseball to somebody? And he said, you know, for the
- 12:45life of me, I can't figure it out.
- 12:48And, and he told me Yankees people don't want him talking to
- 12:52the players about the game. He's a club ambassador,
- 12:56represents them, but they don't want him to be teaching the
- 13:00game. And I'm like, wow, wow.
- 13:04I, I know he managed the Mets and they had that epic collapse,
- 13:0717 games left, seven game lead and they don't win.
- 13:11But how does that guy not have something that that he can give
- 13:16to young players with the with the era and the era and the
- 13:19teams that he played on? But it just takes me to what you
- 13:23what you, what we were talking about to begin with in in this
- 13:27conversation, Don Magley, Willie Randolph, those guys are
- 13:32baseball royalty. They should have always have a
- 13:36place in the game, you know, And that being said, everybody's
- 13:40moving towards hiring guys who worked at Driveline.
- 13:45Baseball, I knew I knew exactly where you're going to go with
- 13:48this and I know Speedy has something to say because he.
- 13:51The team, the team I work for now, when I go to spring
- 13:55training, I will not know a single.
- 13:58Let's say I've been with the Nationals for 21 years.
- 14:00I was with Tampa Bay for seven. I did fill insurance for several
- 14:03years for the Orioles and the Mets.
- 14:05I literally will not know one person other than Sean Doolittle
- 14:10coming back who will be on the coaching staff, the big league
- 14:13staff, and that's maybe never happened before.
- 14:17John, but a part of perspective. So CC and I were talking about
- 14:19this last week. Literally the average age of the
- 14:21Nationals coaching staff is going to what'd you say about 31
- 14:24or something like that? 11 coach who's 51, who's in his
- 14:2940s, who's who's been in the big leagues, is a big league
- 14:32catching coach. But you know, other than
- 14:35Doolittle, none of the others have ever coached at the Major
- 14:38League level. Yeah, neither is the manager.
- 14:41So it doesn't mean it doesn't mean you won't have success, but
- 14:46it's just you're you're going to a different era where this was
- 14:50interesting a couple of years ago, a guy was with when the
- 14:55Nationals started in 2005, Brad Wilkerson was an outfielder who
- 14:59came with them from Montreal when the team moved.
- 15:03And he was the assistant hitting coach for the Yankees.
- 15:06And he told me he could see video of everything that was
- 15:10being worked on with players at every level of the farm system.
- 15:14And the guys who were in the cage with the hitters were video
- 15:17guys. They weren't, they weren't they
- 15:19were the ones who the coaches, but they were video guys that
- 15:22weren't guys who played baseball necessarily.
- 15:26And so it kind of it kind of is a mind blow, but you know, all
- 15:31of it now is these guys who can look at a player, determine what
- 15:37their swing path is, what pitches they're supposed to
- 15:40swing at to have the best success.
- 15:42And that's got to be their approach.
- 15:45So, you know, maybe this started with Tampa Bay where they were
- 15:49making out line UPS based on who the pitcher is.
- 15:51Well, if this guy's a fastball pitcher, these guys are going to
- 15:55play. If this guy's an off speed
- 15:56pitcher, these guys are going to play.
- 15:58And the guys who hit fastballs won't play.
- 16:01You know, and, and I guess it's a way to get around not having a
- 16:06lineup of eight guys who can just freaking hit anybody.
- 16:11You know, that's how you're trying to maximize success now.
- 16:14And the same story with pitchers.
- 16:17You know, we're going to put all these cameras up and determine
- 16:23your, your, your best pitch is all that.
- 16:26Other stuff. Your, your, your angles, your
- 16:28tilt, your spin, you know, Then you listen to the Doctor Who's
- 16:33doing all of the Tommy John surgeries with the with the
- 16:37internal brace, saying all this may not be the best way to go
- 16:41because guys are just trying to maximize every pitch for as long
- 16:45as they can until they blow out. That's that's the thing, Charlie
- 16:48too, where like I, I look at it too.
- 16:51And, and as, as you referenced the guys that we've talked
- 16:54about, we don't have enough baseball dudes in front offices
- 17:01like we see like obviously now Cy in Texas, what do you do?
- 17:08He ended up going to win. Buster's doing a lot of really
- 17:12cool things. What did Cy do at Texas?
- 17:15He brought in Bochy. What they do, they won a World
- 17:18Series, right? Right away.
- 17:20What's Buster going to do? Like they're going to bring
- 17:22baseball guys in. And it's why, why do these minds
- 17:27that we have that should be at the pinnacle and leading an
- 17:34organization or leading A-Team, but when we're relying on
- 17:38freaking dudes that are literally an MIT grad that looks
- 17:43at numbers and be like, this guy's going to be great.
- 17:46Well, no, put eyes on the prize, right?
- 17:49Like. It's it's Stratomatic baseball.
- 17:55And it's it's frustrating as old.
- 17:57I'm a old school baseball guy. I'm a Advil long toss and run
- 18:01that that's what I do. And I teach kids and my son's a
- 18:04sophomore in college. What we do is we play long toss.
- 18:07We do these things and do I look at certain things and I have to
- 18:12adjust to because I know the game is changing and it and it
- 18:16is changing in in certain ways do it.
- 18:18But do I think, and we've talked about this plenty of times on
- 18:21the show, There is there is a place for those things.
- 18:26But when we have great minds that are in the game that we all
- 18:30know and that we see, why are they not put in a position to be
- 18:36able to take care of a team and and do it in the baseball sense?
- 18:41Not in the analytical sense, in the baseball sense, because
- 18:46we've seen now where it's changed.
- 18:48And I think, and Ariel will say the same thing, like he hates
- 18:53the Dodgers because of what they're doing.
- 18:55But also if I'm a player, they're spending the money and
- 19:01giving me, I want to go play with those guys.
- 19:05But if I have somebody else in what?
- 19:07We're asking right now. Yes, he has a great example
- 19:11because talked about his brother who had success in Cincinnati
- 19:18and then fell off and then they he ends up in in LA even though
- 19:23he wasn't there long. He told his brother what it was
- 19:26like there and how they treat everybody.
- 19:29And so if if Edwin Diaz felt his path to win was with the Mets,
- 19:34would $3,000,000 at that point make that much difference to
- 19:37him? OK.
- 19:38But Charlie, at the same time what we're talking about.
- 19:41Who, who? Who?
- 19:42Is in that dugout every day. Who is he?
- 19:46Dave Roberts, a player gets it, understands it.
- 19:54And why do they do these things? And you see the success of these
- 20:00coaches that have played the game and put guys in situations
- 20:06to where it's like, hey, I can I can see these things.
- 20:10And I know the numbers may not tell me what's actually going to
- 20:15happen, or it may tell me what's going to happen.
- 20:19But I'm watching the game. I'm watching the game and that's
- 20:21what they do. Like we seen it.
- 20:24Like one of the most prime examples I think about is you.
- 20:27You brought up Tampa, right? Look at Snow when they took a
- 20:32while. He's facing the line for the
- 20:34third time. What happened?
- 20:35They end up freaking losing a World Series because of their
- 20:38analytical aspect, not you watching the damn game.
- 20:42Right. That night he was lights out and
- 20:46you made a decision based on it, everything that happened in his
- 20:50career up until then. But you didn't trust that night
- 20:54that he could go further. And the other part of it was
- 20:57once you went to the bullpen and you're in Game 7, they're
- 21:01bringing in the same, no offense to relievers, but they're
- 21:04bringing in the same relievers who pitched in every game of the
- 21:09series, who were probably a little bit gassed at that point.
- 21:14But it's not a different look anymore to the hitter cuz
- 21:16they've seen. Them all, the more they see us
- 21:19at that point, the more they see us.
- 21:21It's like you, you already know that what my sequences are you,
- 21:26you know these things. And we switched that up and and
- 21:28that's why we're trying to play chess and not checkers.
- 21:31Charlie's team in the in the nationals, well, they won.
- 21:34They were bringing starters out of the pen and kind of defying
- 21:36those obviously bullpen's. Got shakiness.
- 21:40We didn't. We didn't have enough people in
- 21:42the bullpen. Yeah, our bullpen was was not
- 21:46very good. You had basically you had
- 21:48Doolittle and Hudson. So I mean, that wasn't something
- 21:52that wasn't done before where teams would put starters.
- 21:55It wasn't a time in the postseason.
- 21:58But we we did it a lot that postseason.
- 22:00We did it with Scherzer. We did it with Strasburg, which
- 22:03helped the Nationals win the Wild Card game.
- 22:06Patrick Corbin, those are the best 3 innings he had in six
- 22:10years with the Nationals. And he was only supposed to
- 22:13pitch 1 inning, 1 inning, the 6th inning after Scherzer
- 22:17pitched the first five in Game 7.
- 22:19And Scherzer was the one saying leave them in, leave them in.
- 22:22We don't have enough to get to Doolittle and Hudson.
- 22:24He ended up pitching 3 innings, lights out, nobody got on base.
- 22:28And then they turned the game around against the Astros who
- 22:32took their starter out after he gave up.
- 22:35He was pitching shut out ball, gives up a solo home run, they
- 22:38take him out and the Nationals hit two home runs and turn the
- 22:42game around and score 602 runs. So I mean, frankly, it was
- 22:47lights out, but they didn't trust him to go deeper into the
- 22:51game. Same thing.
- 22:53We've talked about this too, and Ariel L will chime in because I
- 22:56know as soon as I say this exactly what he's going to say.
- 22:59But when we were winning stick, Michael was in our front office
- 23:04and I know who you're going to say that did other things.
- 23:07They're all I know what you're going to say.
- 23:10But you got a baseball dude that came his way to Trenton, NJ to
- 23:16watch me pitch and be like, this kid can help us in the big
- 23:18leagues. It wasn't like, oh, he's doing
- 23:21this, he's doing that. And other guys that helped the
- 23:24team. He's like, I have to like, and
- 23:26he even told me this and God rest his soul, he was like, I
- 23:30have to, I have to see it. I want to see it like you can
- 23:34tell me how good he is in his numbers, but if I don't see it
- 23:38and it ain't there, that's not going to be what we want.
- 23:44And we I don't I don't think we have enough of that like because
- 23:48it it starts so young now where everything is exit below it's
- 23:53spin rate. It's all this other stuff.
- 23:55But let's put an eye on a prize. You, you look at so many guys
- 23:59that have played this game where if you would have put them on a
- 24:03track man or rap Sato or whatever it is and they had
- 24:07those, you wouldn't have spent 2 seconds on them.
- 24:14But they're gamers. Dustin Pedroia, perfect example.
- 24:18And there's way more. Billy too small, too small,
- 24:25they're not good enough. They're not big enough.
- 24:29Goes wins a rookie a year in the MVP like he's a gamer, Charlie.
- 24:35And if you came to. Your eyes on a prize.
- 24:37Charlie, you mentioned Willie where where Willie Randolph and
- 24:41you're saying that Willie Randolph obviously the Yankees
- 24:44aren't letting him work with the younger guys.
- 24:46And, and we've seen this Andy Pettitte for years.
- 24:48He used to go to spring training.
- 24:50All of them usually go to spring training and work with the
- 24:53younger kids. And you have Reggie Jackson, who
- 24:55I think the Yankees did him wrong and that's why he went to
- 24:59the Astros. And that's.
- 25:00Why he no, he'd burn his own bridge.
- 25:02Well, I'm sure I, I don't know, you probably know more than I
- 25:04do, but I, I think that obviously Reggie Jackson is a
- 25:09guy that I've always liked. I've always respected his game
- 25:12and, and what he's all about. I checked out his Reggie
- 25:15documentary, by the way. It's sensational pride put a put
- 25:19a really good product out there. And I haven't even checked out
- 25:21Alex Rodriguez documentary, which I heard is really, really
- 25:24good too. So one of these days I'm going
- 25:26to get to that Charlie Jabba's talking about obviously the game
- 25:31and how a lot of these ex players, the guys that know the
- 25:34game very, very well, why aren't they put in the position to
- 25:37succeed from the guys that don't know the game?
- 25:40Is there a particular organization right now besides
- 25:43the teams that we bring up, Tampa being one of them that
- 25:46have been very well known to develop players?
- 25:49Is there a particular organization that you have
- 25:52watched grow players in the farm system that you believe has
- 25:57really transitioned the game and helped the game grow over the
- 26:00last couple of years? Is there a particular
- 26:02organization that you like out of all the rest?
- 26:06I think, you know, Atlanta has always been good at homegrown
- 26:11players coming up through their system, maybe not as much in
- 26:14recent years. They've always been able to
- 26:16identify players in the Atlanta area and have scouted and
- 26:20drafted them and developed them to get to the big league level.
- 26:25You know, the Dodgers maybe not as much in recent years.
- 26:28A lot of their prospects, they used to trade, but again, you
- 26:35developed a Will Smith. They have the money now to go
- 26:39out and still sign whoever they want.
- 26:41So they haven't developed as many.
- 26:43You've got their center fielders come through the organization.
- 26:46You know, I, I, I think, you know, more teams that don't have
- 26:52the financial resources are focused on trying to develop
- 26:56players and get them to the big leagues through their farm
- 26:59system. So what, what you know, it's,
- 27:01it's not that, it's not that what you find out is it's not
- 27:05that easy. It's not that easy.
- 27:08And so that's why you have these organizations trying different
- 27:13types of ways to develop players and bring in these people who
- 27:17think they're going to accelerate development and
- 27:23establish a culture and a way to go about it at the.
- 27:25Same time you say these owners, all of them are billionaires.
- 27:31They, they can do whatever the heck they want.
- 27:36And it's do you want to put a product on the field that puts
- 27:41butts in seats or do we want to win?
- 27:46And they, I think they go hand in hand, right?
- 27:49Because if you, if you don't have those dudes that kids want
- 27:54to buy their jerseys and do all those things where we always, we
- 27:59always talk about certain things of like, oh, they don't want to
- 28:02spend like the end of the day. We call baseball in our in, in
- 28:07the club. It's a billionaire's board game.
- 28:09Do you want to get, do you want to get Atlantic?
- 28:12Do you want to buy a railroad? It's a club.
- 28:17It's it's, it's their monopoly board like you're saying.
- 28:21So and and we talked about this the last time I was on, which
- 28:26goes to what just happened yesterday.
- 28:30Did the Orioles just find a way to sell some tickets 1000% right
- 28:35by signing Pete Alonso for five years?
- 28:38Because now fans are going, OK, you sign Helsley.
- 28:44If, you know, you just sign Alonso.
- 28:47If we get another starting pitcher here and all those young
- 28:50players who didn't have great years rebound, the Orioles have
- 28:54a chance to contend for the division in the AL ES now.
- 28:58Right away, right away. If if their pitching's better,
- 29:02they have a closer of Helsley. You know, it's true that he was
- 29:05tipping pitches and figured that out.
- 29:07That's why he was unsuccessful with the Mets.
- 29:10And he he turns that around right away and he's the pitcher
- 29:13he was in Saint Louis. And maybe they add a starting
- 29:16pitcher to the mix. They're right there.
- 29:18They might be as good as better than the Yankees.
- 29:21And you know, depending what Toronto does that, you know,
- 29:24Toronto's probably still, you know, contends for the division.
- 29:27But the Orioles step, the Orioles step in a step up in a
- 29:32way, Alonso. And that's what he that's what
- 29:35excites a fan base. I don't like I don't like the
- 29:38Orioles making that move for Pete Alonso for one reason.
- 29:41And if you look at Peter, Pete Alonso's numbers in in the
- 29:45American League East, it's not very good.
- 29:47And, and now you're coming, you're coming into a division
- 29:50where you're going to have to compete with the Yankees 15
- 29:52games a year. You got to play the Red Sox, the
- 29:55the Rays and the Blue Jays and you're an Oreos team that kind
- 29:59of underperformed last year. So there's a lot of pressure on
- 30:03the Orioles this year if if the the Orioles do not produce, are
- 30:06they going to be able to keep the younger players?
- 30:08You have all these great younger players and you have all these
- 30:11great draft classes that you've had over the years.
- 30:13You traded away your best pitching prospect for for what?
- 30:18I mean, a lot of things that the Orioles have done this offseason
- 30:21have you shaking your head and and and you're bringing Pete
- 30:24Alonzo because the Mets are just foolish organization that let
- 30:28their best power hitter go so. Now, you know, I, Grayson
- 30:32Rodriguez A-Team always knows the medicals on their player
- 30:38better than anybody who's going to acquire them.
- 30:41So there's something they that they are afraid of if they
- 30:44traded him at this point when he was one of their top pitching
- 30:47prospects and, and. Charlie, what I, what I heard
- 30:50too in to piggyback kind of what you're saying is from the guy
- 30:56that I talked to, they both were like, we've seen all and, and
- 31:01they kind of just gave up on him because they're like, well, it,
- 31:04we couldn't figure it out. We couldn't do anything and they
- 31:06just were like, well, if it works, it works, but obviously
- 31:10it didn't work there. So he literally is like just a
- 31:15fish out of water at that point and they're like, well, what are
- 31:19we going to get for him? And did they get anything for
- 31:22him? Not really, but they just kind
- 31:25of gave up on him And, and I know that does happen.
- 31:28I, I, I get that because of, you know, injuries and, and stuff
- 31:31like that, but if he goes out and does anything, they didn't
- 31:35get anything back for him. He got he got a left fielder,
- 31:39right-handed hitter who produces some power.
- 31:42So they needed it. They.
- 31:43Need and he's an everyday player.
- 31:45Right in in left field. So there's there's value in
- 31:48that. If they had another starting
- 31:50pitcher, Rogers, who was a disaster when they traded for
- 31:53him from Miami and gave up a couple of really good players,
- 31:56it's look what happened with Stowers in Miami.
- 31:59But then Rogers was great the second-half of last year when he
- 32:03came back from the injury. So again, those he wasn't
- 32:07pitching in the pressure of a Pennant race.
- 32:09So let's let's see what he is Trevor Rogers out of the gate
- 32:13this coming year. But but you know, when you talk
- 32:17about every owner is a billionaire in a billionaire's
- 32:21club, you know, it goes back to, you know, when I talked about
- 32:26San Diego, when they moved into that ballpark, they didn't sell
- 32:29out there a team that drew 1520 thousand fans a game there.
- 32:34And now they're number 2IN attendance in the major leagues
- 32:36to the Dodgers ahead of the Yankees.
- 32:38Saint Louis used to be at the top, fell off in a big way, and
- 32:42that's because they have superstars in their lineup.
- 32:45That's what sells tickets. Whether you win a championship,
- 32:47when you get to the postseason or not, you've put yourself in
- 32:51that position to get there. But you're a team that's making
- 32:54money because you're drawing. And so it's hard for me to
- 32:59comprehend if you you own a team, if you take revenue
- 33:04sharing and that's enough for you to make a profit with TV
- 33:08money and everything else. But you're not putting people in
- 33:11the stands. If you try to win and you sign
- 33:16players, your value of your franchise only goes up if and
- 33:20when the time comes, you're ready to sell.
- 33:22That's what it's all about. So let me, so let me ask you
- 33:25this from from your perspective, if, if you understand like
- 33:29what's in the clubhouse, like what, what's going on, You see
- 33:32it from a different perspective for you to try to relay the game
- 33:36to people and, and make it relatable and make it fun and
- 33:41have listeners have viewership and all that.
- 33:44Is it hard for you to, as someone in your position to
- 33:49like, if they're not doing that, like, yeah, but that's kind of
- 33:52it's, it's hard for me to like relate a great product when I
- 33:56know it's not the best product that we can put on the field.
- 34:00That's that's, you know, we're an extension of trying to sell
- 34:04this to fans. And so, you know, the bottom
- 34:07line when it comes, when it comes to the, you know, right
- 34:11down to it, and I'm there, I'm saying here's the two, one
- 34:15pitch. That's, that's, that's what it
- 34:18comes down to for me. And it's I can't dress it up any
- 34:21better than it is because fans are fans know what the numbers
- 34:26are. They know what the wins and
- 34:27losses are. They're watching the games of
- 34:29the team is successful or not successful.
- 34:32So, you know, I'm either the bearer of good news, I'm the
- 34:36bearer of bad news, you know, and from a broadcaster
- 34:40standpoint, you know, I've spent a lot of years calling teams
- 34:44that were not successful. I could have said bad teams, but
- 34:47I said teams that were not successful on the field.
- 34:50So then the goal for me and, and I said this to my in 2005, the
- 34:55Nationals could have won 1000 games or lost 1000 games.
- 34:58People were so excited to have baseball, they didn't care.
- 35:01And then the team in June ran off 10 wins in a row.
- 35:05They went 20 and six. They were, they were 50 and 31
- 35:10at the midway point. And it were a team that nobody
- 35:13expected to do anything. And they were getting huge
- 35:16crowds, averaged over 40 / 40,000 a game first half of the
- 35:20year at RFK Stadium, which was pretty much a dump, you know,
- 35:24not a good place to watch a game.
- 35:26But for people who remembered baseball when they had it, they,
- 35:29they didn't care. They were excited to go there
- 35:31and, and see games. And so you had a honeymoon
- 35:34period. They went 31 and 50 the
- 35:37second-half of the season, fell out of the wild card race in
- 35:40September and finished 81 and 81, fifth place, 500 people were
- 35:44still happy, you know, but that's, that's not going to, you
- 35:48know, that's not going to last. And it didn't.
- 35:50And, you know, the second or third year, I said to my
- 35:53partner, we're going to have to find a way to tell stories and
- 35:56make these broadcasts interesting because people are
- 35:58not going to tune in for for wins because this team's not
- 36:02going to be good enough while they're while they're building.
- 36:04So we have to, you know, get into, you know, where the
- 36:11players are from trying, you know, find out different things,
- 36:14stories to tell because it's got to be about more than just a
- 36:17game. But you know, now where the
- 36:20Nationals are, a team that won in 2019, they had great teams
- 36:25from 2012 all the way through winning the World Series 2021,
- 36:30expiring contracts. They fall off in July.
- 36:33They trade everybody away and have been in a rebuild since.
- 36:37So you have an entirely new front office now with the 35
- 36:40year old president of baseball operations.
- 36:43You know, the first day of the winter meetings they put out a
- 36:46statement to fans talking about the kind of club he wants to
- 36:51build and wants young kids to fall in love with baseball the
- 36:55way he did growing up in San Francisco, which was a team he
- 36:58grew up watching. That one, three World Series in
- 37:02what, 5 or 6 years with Bruce Bochy and those teams in San
- 37:06Francisco from 2010 to 2014, OK, that you fall in love with the
- 37:12winner. That's how it happens.
- 37:13That's why there's, that's why there's Yankees fans all over
- 37:17the country that go to games when the Yankees are on the
- 37:19road, because they became such huge fans of an iconic
- 37:22franchise, especially after they won four World Series in, in a
- 37:27short span of, of time in, in the late 90s, early 2000s.
- 37:31And so, and then another one in 2009, you know, so when it comes
- 37:37to it, you know, you have a new front office from top to bottom,
- 37:40a new manager and you've stated the type of chemistry you want
- 37:43to build and a team you want fans to fall in love with.
- 37:47But these fans are ready for someone to be signed and try
- 37:50and, and build a winner. You're trying basically you're
- 37:53asking for a honeymoon period. That's a tough thing at this
- 37:56point. All right, Charlie, we're going
- 37:59to do. We have a game.
- 38:00You're a, you're a trivia guy. We're going to get you involved
- 38:04in. This is the first time you've
- 38:06ever done this before. We call this trivia game Tic
- 38:09Tac. No tick.
- 38:10Tick. Morris right in the butt.
- 38:15We get the prizes cheap because they're stolen.
- 38:18No, no, no, no, no, no. All right, ladies, each.
- 38:28Other going wrong? We have a wonderful, wonderful
- 38:32game. And Charlie's never done Tic
- 38:34Tac. No, it's a trivia game and we
- 38:35call it Tic Tac. No, because somebody always says
- 38:39no and Speedy is going to be leading this trivia game.
- 38:44Are you ready, Speedy? I am.
- 38:45All right, let's go. All right, so we'll start.
- 38:48Good thing I had some extra baseball.
- 38:49Was prepared for this. We'll start with a baseball one
- 38:51I've had saved for since the MVP stuff came out.
- 38:54So Barry Bond and Showy Otani have won four or more MVPS.
- 38:59Bonds won seven. But there are three players that
- 39:01have won exactly 3 or 4 players have won exactly 3 MVPS that
- 39:05were National League players. Name two of those guys. 3 MVPS,
- 39:13all National League MVPS. You're saying National League?
- 39:16Guys. And they won three of them.
- 39:17They won three exactly, yes. Bonds is one, right?
- 39:22No, no, Bonds won seven. These are the guys that have won
- 39:25exactly 3 MVP's. So not Bonds, not Showy Otani,
- 39:28who won four. OK, exactly 3.
- 39:32Yep. We go go really far back on
- 39:39this. Some of them, Some of them go
- 39:42back to the 50s. Yes, and 1 is.
- 39:45Stan Mutual. Yep.
- 39:47That's one. There's one and there's one kind
- 39:50of seventies, 80s, and there's one that's 2000s.
- 39:55All right, I got my guess was right.
- 39:56So we just need to get one more and we get the point.
- 39:59Yep, and looks like Java disappeared.
- 40:03He said he's literally, yeah, he's his.
- 40:05Internet's acting up. Let's say you said a 70s.
- 40:12There's one like seventies 80s guy, one more 50s error.
- 40:16Hank Aaron. Nope, not Hank Aaron.
- 40:21I have no clue. You want me to guess for some
- 40:27for you, Tommy? Yeah, I'll give you my guess.
- 40:30All right, so 70s National League, they all the MVPS are in
- 40:35the National League. They didn't couldn't have gotten
- 40:37it one one of them in the AL or anything like that They're.
- 40:40All in the National League. OK, wow.
- 40:47Not Hank Aaron. That's tough.
- 40:53Oh, no, it would have been. I already got the old one.
- 40:58Johnny Bench. It's not Johnny Bench.
- 41:02Good guess though taking. Somebody off the Big Red
- 41:08Machine. Right.
- 41:09Yeah. Nope, there's not anyone on that
- 41:12team. No, it's a good guess though.
- 41:17National League, Wow, I I don't think I'm going to get that one,
- 41:23he said. There was a couple of more
- 41:24recent ones those. There was one.
- 41:25There was one 2000s era player. Oh geez.
- 41:33Pool holes, anyone? From the Pirates.
- 41:38Nope, pools fish got it all right.
- 41:39Fish with both of them, Albert. Pool.
- 41:41Holes, Albert. Pool holes, yeah.
- 41:43You guys were able? To get all right, Cardinals.
- 41:47OK, so here we go. This is how we play the game.
- 41:50Everyone has an icon. Charlie.
- 41:52Here's your icon for tonight. Did we get the 70s Eighties one?
- 41:58Oh, Speedy, tell us the ones that we didn't get.
- 42:00So the the other 50s one was Roy Campanella and then the the 70s
- 42:07eighties one was Mike Schmidt. Oh wow, should have gotten that
- 42:11one. All right, so I got the center
- 42:14square. Next question, Speedy?
- 42:16All right, we'll go to an Edwin Diaz theme question.
- 42:19So he had the he's tied for second in the American League
- 42:22all time with his 57 save season back in 2018, the year before
- 42:27the Mets traded for him. He is tied with what American
- 42:30reliever that did it in 1990. 57 saves.
- 42:36Yep, in 199057. Saves Bobby.
- 42:40And Charlie gets. It very.
- 42:42Good. All right, that's awesome.
- 42:46I would have never gotten that one.
- 42:50Here it is, Charlie. Where do you want to put the
- 42:53piece? We got to make tic tac toe.
- 42:55So you tell us that bottom corner.
- 42:59Take a corner. Yep, all.
- 43:01Right here we go. Right here.
- 43:03All right, Speedy, you got to get what you got to give us your
- 43:05hard one. Now you got to.
- 43:06Block us. We're going to shift to a little
- 43:08basketball for this one. So LeBron James that just
- 43:11recently had his 1920 seven 297 game streak broken where he
- 43:17scored double digit points in a game.
- 43:18So the last time he did not do that before just recently
- 43:21against the Raptors was on January 6th, 2007 when he did it
- 43:25against what East Coast team? Oh come on, that is literally we
- 43:32just have to randomly guess the right team that he played was
- 43:35his rookie. Was that that?
- 43:36I'm assuming that's his rookie year.
- 43:37Nope. 2007. No, 2007 you said so he had a
- 43:41single point game like 3 years into his career.
- 43:43So he had like a really bad game.
- 43:45I guess he'll start off, I don't know with.
- 43:48The Knicks and. It's not the Knicks.
- 43:50No, he only he never scored less than 30 against the Knicks.
- 43:53It's never happened. I don't know.
- 44:00You said East Coast, so Boston. No, Charlie.
- 44:06Guess the East Coast. I'm going to guess Detroit.
- 44:14Nope. That's more Midwest.
- 44:18Still East Coast. It's not East Coast, it's in the
- 44:22middle of the country. It's East Coast.
- 44:25Michigan's not East Coast. Shut up, fish.
- 44:30It's. Literally an East Coast team.
- 44:34Yes, it's an East Coast team that held LeBron James a single
- 44:37digits. I know when this happened the
- 44:44other day I was trying to they mentioned it the last time he
- 44:49had a single digit game. Oh, I I think I might have
- 44:56figured it out, I think. I have a team 2 now but I don't
- 44:59I already. Guessed Boston.
- 45:01Did we say Boston? I said Boston, Miami.
- 45:06It is not Miami Fish. What was your what was your
- 45:09hunch that you just got? I think it might be.
- 45:13I know it wasn't Washington. It was not Washington.
- 45:15That would have been a funny coincidence if it was.
- 45:18Though is that the Dwight Howard Orlando team?
- 45:21No, Goody would have had. Goody would have had too much
- 45:24fun with that. No, it was actually the at that
- 45:25time. New Jersey Next.
- 45:27I was going to say that I don't know.
- 45:28Oh my God. Well, Speedy, you earned that
- 45:33one that that sufficiently stumped all of us.
- 45:36I'm assuming we're going for the block here.
- 45:38Yes, we are. All right, Speedy, next
- 45:41question. Let's keep it moving.
- 45:43Some college football for this one.
- 45:44So the recently hired Matt Campbell got the Penn State job,
- 45:47turned down a director of player personnel job in 2003 for what
- 45:53NFL team that won a Super Bowl? Say that all over again.
- 45:56I'm sorry. So Matt Campbell in 2003, the
- 45:59new head coach for Penn State, previously Iowa State head
- 46:01coach, turned down a director of player personnel job in 2003 for
- 46:05what NFL team that won a Super Bowl in the 21st century, he.
- 46:11Turned down the job. Well, that rules out The Jets.
- 46:17I'm going to say during that time won a Super Bowl.
- 46:27The Eagles not. The Eagles.
- 46:29Damn. They won a Super Bowl after he
- 46:35turned them down. Yes.
- 46:38All right. I thought you were trying to
- 46:39pull a fast one on me here who's gone through a bunch of
- 46:52upheaval. That's what also won, and it
- 46:57wouldn't be like a great franchise if you turned it down,
- 47:01right, Raiders? They did not win in the 21st
- 47:11century. Oh that's I thought they won in.
- 47:15No, they didn't win. They lost that super.
- 47:17Bowl. That's as bad as me picking
- 47:18Detroit. That's why I asked in the 1st
- 47:20place. I don't even know why I said no.
- 47:22It is not as bad as you not knowing where in the country.
- 47:25Detroit is. You, you not knowing where
- 47:28Detroit is is. Significantly worse, right?
- 47:32No, it's not the fact that. You.
- 47:34You are out of your mind if you don't think.
- 47:35That's worse in the 21st. You not knowing no geography,
- 47:39the fact the fact of our country, the fact that they have
- 47:42puzzles for like 6 year olds. Here's the puzzle.
- 47:45I'm tired and I don't want to listen.
- 47:46To your pig now. You're the one fighting.
- 47:49No, you're the one that actually said that the Raiders had won
- 47:53something in the 21st century when they had.
- 47:55It I was trying to think of a crap franchise that a guy like
- 47:59Campbell, who must have been in his 20s at the time, would turn
- 48:03down as opposed to not knowing where Detroit is.
- 48:08I think the 21st century, you picking the Oakland Raiders is
- 48:12absolutely pathetic. Well, I disagree with you.
- 48:14I think yours I. Disagree.
- 48:16The last time they were. In But we can agree to disagree
- 48:18with Rich. Cannon. 2025 against the almost
- 48:212026. That was the last time they even
- 48:23got close so. That's the one I was thinking of
- 48:26and for some reason I I don't know why.
- 48:27They didn't wait. I.
- 48:28Remember the Barrett Robbins disappearance?
- 48:31That Super Bowl? The stairs like All Pro Center
- 48:33that never played again after that.
- 48:36Speedy. I'm going to say the Broncos.
- 48:38It's not the Broncos. So who is it?
- 48:41It's Charlie has a guest left. Wild guest Charlie I.
- 48:47Have a team now that. I'm thinking of, I will say
- 48:54Carolina. And it's not Carolina.
- 48:57Carolina fish. Kind of.
- 48:58Wild guest, yeah. Fish kind of redirected.
- 49:01It actually was a great franchise.
- 49:03It was. The really what it?
- 49:05Was the Patriots. So wait, the Patriots, they
- 49:08offered a 20 year old, they offered a because he in 2003.
- 49:15Like isn't he only in his early 40s?
- 49:17Matt? Can't this guy like he would
- 49:19have been like 21? Yeah, something like that.
- 49:21He's definitely young still. He is 46, so I guess he would
- 49:27have. Yeah, he would have been. 20 he
- 49:29would have been like 2 years out of college time.
- 49:31Yeah, and he turned it down. What?
- 49:33Who's impressive enough two years out of college to be
- 49:36named? You know what?
- 49:38Who knows what the way that they did stuff.
- 49:40It's the Patriot way, I guess. Speedy.
- 49:42Speedy. Where do you want to go all?
- 49:44Right, let's go. Oh, whoops, that's not the right
- 49:48one. That's the one with you dancing.
- 49:52That one over like a foreign church.
- 49:58Breaking news, I need Brittany also.
- 50:00Let me just get rid of that. Breaking news, they call me the
- 50:04ladies man and Mr. Still your girl.
- 50:06All right, Speedy, where all? Right, we will go.
- 50:09Let's go top to right. Why is that there, Speedy?
- 50:19Here we go. All right, starting to get a
- 50:22little hairy. All right, let's go, Speedy.
- 50:23We'll see if you guys can get the base the last baseball 1 I
- 50:26have. So obviously Pete Alonso getting
- 50:29the biggest contract in Orioles history.
- 50:31We know all about the Chris Davis debacle too as the other
- 50:34bad contract in Orioles history. Besides those two players, who
- 50:38got the next highest? The next biggest contract for
- 50:44the Orioles? Yep, besides Chris Davis and
- 50:47obviously Pete Alonso just signed.
- 50:52How far back are we going? Not as far, not that far.
- 50:58Miguel Tata. Nope.
- 51:02That's a good guess. That's a good guess, Brady
- 51:08Anderson. Nope.
- 51:11Steroid. Man and cash in on that steroid.
- 51:15I mean, Luke, 50 home run season.
- 51:22All right, Maybe it's more recent.
- 51:23Maybe it's like I'm going to say Adam Jones.
- 51:26That's correct, yeah. All.
- 51:30Right. All right, Speedy, we're going
- 51:32to block you. All right.
- 51:39Next question all. Right.
- 51:40So you guys brought it up in Deuce of the Day, Phillip
- 51:42Rivers. They call Cam Newton debacle.
- 51:45So Cam Newton's MVP season, Phillip Rivers leading receiver
- 51:49that year was not a running, was not a receiver, was either a
- 51:53running back or a tight end. Name this player.
- 51:56I'll name the first one Antonio Gates.
- 51:58It's not. Antonio Gates.
- 51:59Oh, you said a run. So then it's the then it's the
- 52:01Hall of Fame running back. The Hall of Fame running back.
- 52:06Denny's, 2015 Oh, No 20. 15 Oh, you said you said old 2015.
- 52:10Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
- 52:11Yeah, 2015's, then I didn't run. It back.
- 52:15Was Eckler on the team then? No, no, no, no, not Eckler.
- 52:22Well, it wasn't. Gates.
- 52:24No, it's it's only 2015. Tomlinson was already done by
- 52:27then. Who the?
- 52:28Hell did they have at the running backroom then?
- 52:33Is that like? I don't know.
- 52:39Yeah, I have no clue. Give me give me your guess then,
- 52:42Tommy. Yeah, I'll get fish.
- 52:44My guess? So you're saying that it wasn't
- 52:47Gates? So the leading receiver as far
- 52:49as yards or receptions or both yards yards.
- 52:54Wow. Keenan Allen was second with
- 52:58755. And that's obviously not great,
- 53:02but it was a running back that would have gotten that many
- 53:05yards. That's really fascinating.
- 53:08Who did they have? Like on the tip of my tongue.
- 53:16No one will get this. I mean, after Tomlinson, who was
- 53:23their running back? So like Michael Turner or
- 53:26something like that, Didn't we have him on the show?
- 53:28I don't think he was a receiving threat though.
- 53:33No, he was. He was.
- 53:34He was in Atlanta. Then that's right, Atlanta.
- 53:38No. Was the Chargers back up took
- 53:42over? Danny Woodhead.
- 53:43Charlie gets it. Very good.
- 53:45Woodhead and I was not going. To get that well.
- 53:47Charlie already guessed, though, that.
- 53:50Was it? Charlie got it.
- 53:52I'll get in that. All right.
- 53:54Well then it's game over, Charlie.
- 53:56We have done it. All right, you can there.
- 54:02You go. All right, There we go.
- 54:06Tic Tac. No.
- 54:07Charlie's first Tic Tac No game. All right, so we got one more
- 54:12segment, and since Jabba's no longer with us because his
- 54:17computer went down, we will have Charlie join us.
- 54:20I'm sure he has his own take on this, as we call this.
- 54:23What's that smell? Hold up, what is that smell?
- 54:27What's that? Smell.
- 54:33Wow, you don't see that every day.
- 54:35I am absolutely pissed off by the Buccaneers.
- 54:37They have not used Bucky Irving at all.
- 54:40Godwin has a touchdown and I'm playing Godwin in my fantasy
- 54:44league. It's just absolutely pathetic.
- 54:45And still no Bucky Irving. Enough of Bucky.
- 54:49Irving, it doesn't answer me this.
- 54:51Errol, the Atlanta scores, it's 2820, Yeah, with over 9 minutes
- 54:57to go. And they went for two and they
- 54:59didn't get it. I don't understand that, but
- 55:02also if if the Buccaneers are smart, they run the ball so they
- 55:06run the clock out. But.
- 55:09The analytics, the analytics say that you do do that Charlie
- 55:12though, because like the idea is if you get it.
- 55:15Worked in their favor because Mayfield on the next possession
- 55:19just got intercepted. Well, I mean.
- 55:22Has the Atlanta has the ball near midfield.
- 55:28That's really interesting. Maybe this game's going up in
- 55:29overtime or come down to that two point conversion.
- 55:32But the idea is if they make the two point conversion, then they
- 55:35get a touchdown and they win with the extra point.
- 55:37If they don't make it, they still have a chance to tie with
- 55:40getting a 2 point conversion. So technically that's a better
- 55:43set of outcomes than just kicking the extra point, they
- 55:47say. I wouldn't be surprised if
- 55:49Atlanta wins this game. It's very typical.
- 55:52Anyways, ladies and gentlemen, so it's pretty simple how you
- 55:55play this game. We're going to go around in a
- 55:58circle and we're going to tell you something that is happening
- 56:02in football, baseball, hockey, basketball, and we're going to
- 56:07tell you what it smells like. It could be anything.
- 56:09It could be something bad, something good, whatever, and
- 56:12we're going to tell you what it smells like after we give you
- 56:16the take. So First things first, we're
- 56:18going to go Speedy, we're going to go fish, we're going to go
- 56:20poops, we're going to go Charlie, we're going to go me.
- 56:22Here we go, all. Right, so I'm going to start it
- 56:24off with CVS Sports and 24/7 Sports.
- 56:27College football radio host and personality Bud Elliott
- 56:32literally decided to say it is a safety issue, putting James
- 56:37Madison the number 12 seed and Tulane the number 11 seed in the
- 56:40College Football Playoff field. He said football is not like any
- 56:43other sport, it is a safety issue.
- 56:45He said that eight and five. Duke deserved a spot and also
- 56:48Notre Dame, Texas and Vanderbilt deserving spots over those two
- 56:53group of five teams because it is a safety issue.
- 56:55Tulane and JMU being in our avoid our charity to avoid
- 56:59getting sued and then literally responded to some fans that took
- 57:03shots at the SEC for scheduling schools like the Citadel and
- 57:07stuff like that try to defend this issue when literally
- 57:09football is the same game. If anything, it's just as
- 57:12physical just because those teams have to play more
- 57:14physical, including somebody like Tulane that's had some good
- 57:16defensive lineman and linebackers, Jeff from the NFL
- 57:18recently, and Jamie JMU, which has been an FCS powerhouse for a
- 57:22while. So I don't know what you're
- 57:24thinking. Safety issue.
- 57:25Football is the same game. Yikes.
- 57:26Why do you work there? You're going to make takes like
- 57:28that. So what does that smell like?
- 57:30It smells like a Green Wave that Tulane likes to bring, but
- 57:33instead of a green color, it's green, filled with mold and
- 57:36algae going all on to Bud's head.
- 57:43So the giants I got, I actually have two giants.
- 57:47What's that smells? We're going to combine them.
- 57:49The first one is did you know on that wonderful missed field goal
- 57:56by young Waku where he got his foot stuck in the ground and and
- 58:02couldn't actually kick the ball and it looked like he got frozen
- 58:05by a magical spell in a video game.
- 58:09The punter, Jamie Gillan, who is the holder for the kicks, ended
- 58:13up injuring his knee on that play and will likely miss the
- 58:17game this week. So that play not only was one of
- 58:21the worst plays I saw in real time, also got our punter
- 58:24probably injured possibly for the rest of the season.
- 58:27That is so terrible. And on top of that, listen to
- 58:32this, this one, you know, the Giants used to have employ Brian
- 58:35Cox, guess the same Brian Cox that made Tom Brady's career
- 58:38possible. Brian Cox as assistant defensive
- 58:41line coach. And he was fired by Mike Kafka
- 58:45over a large disagreement last week over apparently Kafka
- 58:51telling him and his assistant group that they are now sitting
- 58:55in the back of the plane. That is some horrible optics
- 59:00that I don't understand why the story is not being talked about
- 59:03a little bit more. It smells like that everything
- 59:07is wrong in the Kingdom of Mike Krapka.
- 59:11Yes, I'm going to be calling him Mike Krapka from now on.
- 59:14He is just as bad as the rest of them.
- 59:17Obviously Cox was a Dabel guy apparently, and the Dabel Kafka,
- 59:22I mean, Dabel did like bully him for Four Seasons straight.
- 59:25So I guess that that there's some some retribution, but man,
- 59:29what an absolute stink bomb of a crap show in crap town.
- 59:35That's what it smells like. Just the most crap.
- 59:40You brought up Brian Cox accelerating Tom Brady's career.
- 59:43It was funny. The one Jets game I ever went to
- 59:45back in 2015, they were playing the Patriots and they were.
- 59:48They were honoring MO Lewis before the game.
- 59:51Oh my God. All right, Tommy, All right.
- 59:54Right, so I'm going to be keeping it with some wrestling.
- 59:56I know I did wrestling last week, but this Saturday?
- 1:00:00Alex is going. To be this Saturday, the
- 1:00:02conclusion will be coming to an end for a specific man.
- 1:00:06The last time is now, and I'm talking about the 17 time. 1 of
- 1:00:10the greatest champions with the greatest wrestlings of wrestlers
- 1:00:13of all time, Mr. John Cena himself.
- 1:00:15You want to jerk me off now? This retirement tour is going to
- 1:00:19be concluding on Saturday. Like I said, shout out to my
- 1:00:21father's birthday on that day as well.
- 1:00:23Going to. Be concluding on Saturday.
- 1:00:26Now The thing is, is that I just have to point out how oh
- 1:00:30somewhat piss poor this retirement tour has been now
- 1:00:33ever since the last year when he announced that he had 17 dates.
- 1:00:3617 dates to go and wrestle for the last time.
- 1:00:40Last time he was going to be in certain countries.
- 1:00:41Last time he was going to be in certain cities, areas, arenas,
- 1:00:44whatnot for the last time on certain pay per views.
- 1:00:47Now I will say I'm not dissing the retirement tour itself.
- 1:00:51I think that like I said, John Cena, one of the best of all
- 1:00:53time, definitely deserves a retirement tour.
- 1:00:55However, I feel as if the 17 dates were a lot wasted.
- 1:00:59For instance, he's fighting goon third on his last match that
- 1:01:01should have been wasted instead of having, I don't know, they
- 1:01:04had like tag matches with Logan Paul and it was very random.
- 1:01:08So my thing is, is that I feel. I get more girls than.
- 1:01:12Scoops The heel run wasn't entirely all there.
- 1:01:14I feel like the the creative decision actually decided to
- 1:01:17pull some of it back. So my thing is, is creative you
- 1:01:21need to Start learning how to book your retirement tours a
- 1:01:23little bit better. Because for the man, like I said
- 1:01:25for the last 20 years, who has been one of the guys who have
- 1:01:28put WWE on blast in PG era in the last 20 years or so, John
- 1:01:33Cena definitely deserved a better retirement tour.
- 1:01:35But like I said, I'm not going to be trash talking a retirement
- 1:01:38tour because the retirement of one of the best of all time and
- 1:01:41with their career of one of the best of all time smells like
- 1:01:43roses. However, this retirement tour.
- 1:01:45Poops gets no coots. Well, this retirement tour,
- 1:01:48actually, Speaking of Nathan, that's just on this.
- 1:01:51Suck my indo. Errol obviously loves so much.
- 1:01:54The smell of his retirement tour smells like Lisa Anne's Groba
- 1:01:57trusty aunties. Groba, I love Lisa Anne.
- 1:02:02So there we. Go.
- 1:02:04All right, Charlie, what do you got for us?
- 1:02:07Well, I was. I wasn't prepared for this.
- 1:02:09So you you need something that stinks.
- 1:02:11Right. Something that stinks.
- 1:02:13Give us something that. Stinks.
- 1:02:14It could stink nicely sometimes. You could do a nice one.
- 1:02:18You smell like roses. The Mets over the last few days,
- 1:02:21I mean, what stinks? What does it?
- 1:02:25Smell like. I mean, nothing tops.
- 1:02:28Nothing tops Losing Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso in consecutive
- 1:02:32days. That's not beatable.
- 1:02:36You want my cream pie? That's a show end there, really.
- 1:02:41My rear end is burning. There you go, that's what it
- 1:02:45smells like if. It's a rent burning after he
- 1:02:52tries to put on Lisa Ann's panties.
- 1:02:53That's true all. Right.
- 1:02:55My God the. Final mine was short.
- 1:02:57Mine was short. And sweet that.
- 1:02:59I can't come up with anything that stinks.
- 1:03:01More. I've got a good one.
- 1:03:03I got a good one. My final What's that smell goes
- 1:03:06to? Finally, Jeff Kent getting into
- 1:03:09the Hall of Fame. But now Donnie Baseball's got to
- 1:03:13wait until 2028 for the committee to actually look at
- 1:03:18him again and vote him into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:03:21This guy in a 5 to 6 year span has some of the best numbers
- 1:03:24we've ever seen an infielder have.
- 1:03:27How many Gold Gloves does this guy have to win?
- 1:03:29How many hitting, batting titles did he, this guy had to win in
- 1:03:33the time that he did it And, and really with a Yankee team that
- 1:03:36was really that bad. And this guy did everything.
- 1:03:41He was the Yankee. He was the captain, He was
- 1:03:44everything. Donnie Baseball should be in the
- 1:03:46Hall of Fame and should be inducted in all of fame,
- 1:03:49including the one and only the chief himself, the general.
- 1:03:54Yes, you know, I'm talking about the one, the only Mr.
- 1:03:58Steinbrenner who's still not in the Hall of Fame. 2 guys that
- 1:04:01should be inducted into Hall of Fame.
- 1:04:03It's not there. You know what it smells like?
- 1:04:05It smells like Bud Selig's ass when he takes a dump.
- 1:04:09OK, how is Bud Selig in the Hall of Fame and George Steinbrenner
- 1:04:14isn't this guy allowed steroids, allowed everything to go on and
- 1:04:19he gets away with it because Robbie Manford was allowing this
- 1:04:24guy. And actually as soon as Rob
- 1:04:26Manfer gets into position to get his, his, well, whatever Bud
- 1:04:31Selig was his, you know, Rob Manfer was his protege.
- 1:04:34The the fact is, is that this guy's in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:04:37George Stamper is not in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:04:38Don Manley is not in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:04:40Makes no sense. Albert Bell should be in the
- 1:04:43Hall of Fame. Just absolutely.
- 1:04:44Potential. I just want to say Errol, I, I
- 1:04:47agree with you, the writers missed on Jeff Kent.
- 1:04:51He should have been voted in 100% when they had the chance in
- 1:04:53the 1st 10 years, right? Yep.
- 1:04:56But Mattingly should be in, yes. Keith Hernandez should be in,
- 1:05:00Yep. You know, they don't, they don't
- 1:05:03get them all right and and they don't the boss, they don't get
- 1:05:06them within that that 10 year period, you know.
- 1:05:09George Steinbrenner saved baseball.
- 1:05:11He saved baseball and and this guy's not in the Hall of Fame,
- 1:05:14but Bud ceiling is as the steroid error just magically
- 1:05:18happened. So it's just unbelievable.
- 1:05:21It's absolutely I agree with you, Charlie.
- 1:05:23There's a lot of these guys in and what I don't understand and
- 1:05:26what you know what you're trying to come by the way, Kyle Pitts
- 1:05:29had another touchdown. That's three touchdowns in a
- 1:05:31game. So now they need now, Now they
- 1:05:34need that. Here comes the two point
- 1:05:35conversion try you were talking about.
- 1:05:38Yeah, well, and that's and now here's the the, you know, that's
- 1:05:41the gamble you take. But now it's to tie the game
- 1:05:44now. It's Yeah, well, I'm hoping they
- 1:05:46make it because I've got the Bucs kicker in my fantasy and
- 1:05:49this is just prime time for kicker points.
- 1:05:51If they tie it well. Let's see, like this is 3 1/2
- 1:05:55minutes left. I want to see Bucky Irving time,
- 1:05:57and that's what I want to see. They're giving it to that
- 1:06:00Syracuse kid at the goal line. It's not.
- 1:06:02They're not giving it to Bucky at the goal line.
- 1:06:04They didn't get it. They didn't get the 2.
- 1:06:07Oh well, I guess I'm not getting any more kicker points.
- 1:06:10Well, that means Bucky, Bucky, Bucky.
- 1:06:12Give it to buck, Give it to the buck, don't you?
- 1:06:15Should be, should be giving it to him right now.
- 1:06:17They should be, but I don't know if that's going to happen.
- 1:06:20Anyways, that's it for a show. Thank you, Charlie, for joining
