- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 18. First, let's pray.
- 0:04Dear Lord, please let U.S. Open our eyes and ears to what
- 0:09you have to say. Open our hearts to this and be
- 0:14with us as we read through this like inspire us and bring our
- 0:19thoughts to you as we go through this and to fully grasp what you
- 0:26are saying here, we ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
- 0:31So this is titled the one who sins will die in my study Bible.
- 0:37So chapter 18, the word of the Lord came to me, meaning
- 0:40Ezekiel. What do you people mean by
- 0:44quoting the proverb about the land of Israel?
- 0:47The parents eat sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on
- 0:51edge. As surely as I live, declares
- 0:54the sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in
- 0:57Israel for everyone. Everyone belongs to me, the
- 1:02parent as well as the child, both alike belong to me.
- 1:07The one who sins is the one who will die.
- 1:11And I think we're going to talk a little a lot more about this.
- 1:14So it may end up turning into a an additional podcast, but we'll
- 1:19see how much time we have. OK.
- 1:22Verse 5, suppose there is a righteous man who does what is
- 1:26just and right. He does not eat at the mountain
- 1:30shrines or look to the idols of Israel.
- 1:33He does not defile his neighbor's wife or have sexual
- 1:36relations with a woman during her period.
- 1:39He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge
- 1:44for a loan. He does not commit robbery, but
- 1:47gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.
- 1:52He does not lend to them at interest or make a profit from
- 1:56them. He withholds his hand from doing
- 1:59wrong and judges fairly between two parties.
- 2:04He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws.
- 2:08That man is righteous. He will surely live.
- 2:13Did you notice that righteousness means following
- 2:16the decrees and faithfully keeping God's laws?
- 2:21So I just wanted to point that out.
- 2:22So this was, declares the sovereign Lord.
- 2:25Suppose he has a violent son who sheds blood, or does any of
- 2:30these other things, though the father has done none of them.
- 2:34He eats. This is referring to the son.
- 2:36He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbors wife.
- 2:40He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery.
- 2:42He does not return what he took and pledged.
- 2:45He looks to the idols. He does detestable things.
- 2:49He lends that interest and takes a profit.
- 2:52Will such a man live? He will not.
- 2:56And there's an exclamation point there because he has done all
- 3:00these detestable things. He is to be put to death.
- 3:04His blood will be on his own head.
- 3:07But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father
- 3:13commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such
- 3:17things. He does not eat at the mountain
- 3:20shrines or look to the idols of Israel.
- 3:22He does not defile his neighbor's wife.
- 3:24He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan.
- 3:29He does not commit robbery, but gives his food to the hungry and
- 3:33provides clothing for the naked. He withholds his hand from
- 3:36mistreating the poor and takes no interest or profit from them.
- 3:40He keeps my laws and follows my decrees.
- 3:44He will not die for his father's sin.
- 3:48He will surely live. But his father will die for his
- 3:53own sin because he practised extortion, robbed his brother
- 3:58and did what was wrong among his people.
- 4:01Yet you ask, why does the son not share the guilt of his
- 4:04father? Since the son has done what is
- 4:08just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees,
- 4:12he will surely live. The one who sins is the one who
- 4:17will die. The child will not share the
- 4:21guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of
- 4:26the child. The righteousness of the
- 4:29righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the
- 4:34wicked will be charged against them.
- 4:37But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they
- 4:43committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just
- 4:47and right, that person will surely live.
- 4:51They will not die. None of the offenses they have
- 4:54committed will be remembered against them.
- 4:58Pay attention to that. So here's somebody who is wicked
- 5:00and doing all these bad things, but they turn away from that
- 5:06stuff and then it says also none of the offenses they have
- 5:11committed will be remembered against them.
- 5:14Look at how merciful God is. Like none of the offenses they
- 5:18have committed will be remembered against them.
- 5:22Once we turn away from something that is from our past, God
- 5:26doesn't hold it over our head like in people relationships
- 5:31that could very easily happen. People don't forget, but God
- 5:38says specifically none of the offenses they have committed
- 5:42will be remembered against them. Now, this isn't something where
- 5:46somebody does something wrong to someone and does something wrong
- 5:51to God and then says, I'm, you know, I'm sorry about it.
- 5:55I'll try not to do it again. And then they do it again next
- 5:58week, and then they do it again next week and then next week.
- 6:00I mean, this is not what repentance is.
- 6:03Repentance is turning away from it.
- 6:05Repentance is stopping it, reflecting God's will.
- 6:09Like if God doesn't want you to do it, are you obedient to him
- 6:14or do you follow your own fleshly desires?
- 6:18That's why, you know, Paul talks about crucifying the flesh.
- 6:22That's why Jesus talks about picking up your own cross.
- 6:26There is pain involved with repentance because it's not
- 6:32doing our will, but doing God's will.
- 6:37And that's the way we show God that we love him.
- 6:40And that's what God is after. He is after person, after his
- 6:44own heart, someone who loves him back.
- 6:47He loves us, he's merciful for us, He forgives us.
- 6:50He'll even like stop remembering what we did to him prior and and
- 6:56we have a we become a new creation.
- 6:59So I mean, this is just like if people could understand this,
- 7:03because I really don't think that there, well, I think that
- 7:07there are many people are who are confused by all of this.
- 7:12And I also think that there are churches who don't fully express
- 7:17this. And, and I really think this is
- 7:21such an important chapter because I do believe that this
- 7:24effects where we end up in eternity.
- 7:28And I think it's really important for people to know
- 7:31this, know this, know this truth, and not be deceived by
- 7:37somebody repeating certain pieces of the Bible, but not all
- 7:42the pieces of the Bible. And so that's why it's so
- 7:46important for each of us to go into the Bible, no matter who
- 7:50says it, and double check what anyone is saying.
- 7:54And often, if we hear something that we like, we really don't
- 7:58want to double check it because we're like, oh, somebody in
- 8:01authority said this, and they're in authority.
- 8:05And they said, you know, what I'm doing is OK.
- 8:09And we don't check it because we don't want to find the opposite
- 8:13answer. But the truth is found in the
- 8:16Bible. And so it's not what somebody
- 8:21else in authority says. We have to remember that humans
- 8:23are fallible. Humans make mistakes.
- 8:28Humans, they may be doing it to the best of their ability and or
- 8:33they could be deceptive. We don't know.
- 8:35But just because a human being says something and even someone
- 8:40in authority says something does not mean that you should
- 8:44immediately believe. Listen to what they say and
- 8:48double check it with the Bible because there's a lot of people
- 8:51who are misinterpreting the Bible because the Bible repeats
- 8:55itself throughout the Old Testament all the way to the New
- 8:59Testament. From Genesis to Revelation.
- 9:02It tells the same story and people try to say the Old
- 9:09Testament is different than the New Testament.
- 9:10No, it's not. God does not change.
- 9:14He is the same. He's not a different God.
- 9:18He's the same God and what he said, I mean, Jesus even said,
- 9:22you know, heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will
- 9:25not. You know, the words will remain.
- 9:27So the word is our Scripture and that's going to say what God has
- 9:32said. And this is God speaking to
- 9:35Ezekiel. So God is saying a righteous
- 9:39person will live and a wicked person will die.
- 9:43That's a wicked person who has not repented, has not repented,
- 9:48is one who keeps doing the same sin.
- 9:52Someone who's reported stops it. If we try to do it in our own
- 9:57power, we're not so successful with it.
- 9:59But Jesus is loving to us and will send the Holy Spirit who
- 10:06will work in us to change us. And I can tell you I've
- 10:11absolutely experienced this because things that are even the
- 10:16way I used to think is not the way I think today.
- 10:20And it's come specifically not from what I heard from others,
- 10:26but from reading the Bible and seeing what God said.
- 10:30Because I don't really trust others.
- 10:31Because I found the people that I trusted that were in authority
- 10:35didn't tell me the truth in religion.
- 10:38And and so I just want what does God say?
- 10:42And I'm not going to trust anyone who says they're in
- 10:45authority because I know that humans make mistakes.
- 10:48But I want to, I'll wrestle with what they said and go back to
- 10:51the Bible to find it. And every single one of us
- 10:54should do the same. Even, you know, I'm not even
- 10:57what I say like double check me, but I'm really confident that
- 11:01you're going to find the same thing.
- 11:03If you if you really seek and you pray to God, you're going to
- 11:06find the same thing that I did because I wasn't necessarily
- 11:10looking to find conviction by any means, but I did find it.
- 11:16OK, let's continue on. So let's see verse 22.
- 11:22I'll just say none of the offenses they have committed
- 11:24will be remembered against them because of the righteous things
- 11:28they have done. They will live.
- 11:31Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked, Declares
- 11:35the Lord the sovereign Lord? Rather, am I not pleased when
- 11:40they turn from their ways and live?
- 11:44God does not want people to perish.
- 11:48God does not want that for people.
- 11:50But he doesn't force us to do His will.
- 11:55That is a choice. Love is a choice, not a feeling.
- 12:01We choose to do God's will versus our will or we choose not
- 12:09to do that. So it's a choice.
- 12:11Do we love God or do we not love God?
- 12:13Do we love ourselves more than God?
- 12:15Do we want to satisfy our own selfishness or do we want to
- 12:21submit to what God says is right and wrong and follow it?
- 12:26Be obedient to him. Verse 24 But if a righteous
- 12:30person turns from their righteousness and commits sin
- 12:35and does the same detestable things of the wicked person,
- 12:39will they live? None of the righteous things
- 12:43that person has done will be remembered.
- 12:46So that's another thing that I think does not get communicated
- 12:51in churches that satisfy that make the feel good churches
- 12:56where they just they don't help us changing from being righteous
- 13:03into doing wicked things and people like in the Christian
- 13:07world call it backsliding. I sometimes wonder if the people
- 13:11who are quote backsliding were ever saved to begin with.
- 13:17Honestly, I really do question that because and, and what God
- 13:22says is that none of the righteous things that a person
- 13:26has done will be remembered. So he doesn't just respond
- 13:32favorably to the wicked who turn and become righteous, but he
- 13:36treats the righteous the same way.
- 13:38If they become wicked, no, they will die too.
- 13:43And so then it says because of the unfaithfulness they are
- 13:47guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they
- 13:51will die. And, and could this be the enemy
- 13:56think, you know, letting us feel comfortable in continual sin to
- 14:01say, oh, it's OK, you have grace.
- 14:04You know, that's a perfect little lie from the enemy.
- 14:08And the enemy just seeks to destroy, kill and destroy.
- 14:13So if we listen to that because it sounds good to us and because
- 14:16it doesn't cause us any any change, it doesn't make anything
- 14:20hard for us. It is we don't have to pick up
- 14:23our cross like Jesus said. Then people start, they just
- 14:28listen to it. It says, you know, it does say
- 14:30that there will be people will tend to go to what they're
- 14:34itching ears want to hear. Like they won't put up with
- 14:37sound doctrine in in certain times.
- 14:41There will come a time when people don't put up with sound
- 14:44doctrine and they will just seek out whatever fits the narrative
- 14:49that they want it to be. And they'll say, well, it's
- 14:52coming from authority. This is a church and the church
- 14:54is affirming what I want it to say.
- 14:58So I'm going to believe this. But that's deception, right?
- 15:03There's deception. That's why we need the Bible.
- 15:06So verse 25 says, yet you say the way of the Lord is not just.
- 15:12Have you Israelite here? You Israelites, is my way
- 15:17unjust? Is it not your ways that are
- 15:20unjust? If a righteous person turns from
- 15:23their righteousness and commits sin, they will die.
- 15:27Because of the sin they have committed, they will die.
- 15:31But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they
- 15:36have committed and does what is just and right, they will save
- 15:40their life because they consider all the offenses they have
- 15:46committed and turn away from them.
- 15:48That person will surely live. They will not die.
- 15:52So think about this, because they consider all the offenses
- 15:55they committed. So it's like recognizing the
- 15:59things that we have done and everyone is guilty of this.
- 16:03So it's not just pointing fingers at one person.
- 16:05Every single person on this earth is that way.
- 16:09So but we have to reflect on ourselves and what offenses have
- 16:13we done? What things do we do that God is
- 16:16not happy with? What things would we be
- 16:19embarrassed if God put out in public and put a spotlight on us
- 16:24and shined a light on something that we were doing?
- 16:28What if that happened? Is there anything in our in our
- 16:32life if God put a spotlight on us?
- 16:34Would we say, Oh, I wouldn't want that to be known?
- 16:37Well, if that, if there's something like that, that means
- 16:40that's probably the conviction of the Holy Spirit saying that's
- 16:44something we need to address in our life and the Holy Spirit
- 16:47will help us. But we have to make the choice.
- 16:49It's not I wit, you know, seriously, I wanted the Holy
- 16:53Spirit to just make it easy on me.
- 16:55Just just make me do whatever God wants me to do.
- 16:57And so I don't have to deal with it, you know, like I just want
- 17:01the Holy Spirit to take over. But God gives us free will it he
- 17:05doesn't do that, the Holy Spirit doesn't ever force us.
- 17:09So we still get that choice. And then it's a testing of our
- 17:12own self when we're faced with that choice, are we going to
- 17:17heed to God's will or will we follow through with our own
- 17:22desires when they are contrary to God?
- 17:25So verse 28, because they consider all the offenses they
- 17:30have committed and turned away from them, that person will
- 17:32surely live. They will not die.
- 17:34Yet the Israelites say the way of the Lord is not just.
- 17:37Are my ways unjust? People of Israel, is it not your
- 17:40ways that are unjust? Therefore, you Israelites, I
- 17:43will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the
- 17:48sovereign Lord. Repent.
- 17:50This is something that a lot of churches don't say and and it's
- 17:55all over the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- 17:58I mean the direction given to the disciples, I believe are to
- 18:02the people. I can't remember who said this,
- 18:05if it was Peter or Jesus, but repent and be baptized.
- 18:09So repent has been a message that people, you know, shove
- 18:16under the rug today in some churches, they don't ever want
- 18:18to talk about repenting because that doesn't make people feel
- 18:24good about themselves. Like they're confronted.
- 18:28I don't For me personally, when I would go to a church and they
- 18:31would be talking about something that convicted me, it would
- 18:34cause me to to cry in church. You know, that was like
- 18:39embarrassing. So you sit in the far back.
- 18:41So nobody else saw you. You know, now I can go to church
- 18:44and can hear these things and I don't cry anymore.
- 18:46It's like I, I'm aware of these things.
- 18:49I've turned away from them and it doesn't have that effect on
- 18:52me. That's the freedom that's found
- 18:54in Christ. When Christ is in US and we've
- 18:58been forgiven of our sins and we've turned away from them, we
- 19:02don't have that that guilt feeling anymore because
- 19:06everybody hates that guilt felt feeling.
- 19:08But the guilt feeling is good because it leads us to
- 19:12repentance. If we don't have the guilt
- 19:14feeling, then we're probably in trouble because we've maybe
- 19:18crossed over to the line where we don't even care anymore.
- 19:22But that guilty feeling, as much as we hate it, is a good thing
- 19:26if it leads us to repentance. So turn away from all your
- 19:30offenses. Then sin will not be your
- 19:33downfall. Rid yourself of all the offenses
- 19:37you have committed. So repentance, it says, rid
- 19:41yourself of all the offenses you have committed.
- 19:45Rid yourself of all the offenses you have committed, and get a
- 19:50new heart and a new spirit. This is the Old Testament
- 19:56talking about the Holy Spirit. Isn't that interesting?
- 20:01You will find the Holy Spirit from the very beginning, the
- 20:04book of Genesis hovering over the waters, the Spirit of God.
- 20:08And then you will see the Spirit of God, you know, coming down on
- 20:13Jesus after he was baptized. And I think it was that God had
- 20:19shared that with Isaiah. I, I think I have some verses
- 20:23about that he had foretold that event would happen to Isaiah and
- 20:28and then it was recorded in the New Testament when it did happen
- 20:32with Jesus. So the Spirit, this is always
- 20:35like the sequence of events. And I was trying to figure out
- 20:39because the Holy Spirit, just to understand the Holy Spirit more
- 20:43because you know, some will say as soon as you believe you
- 20:46receive the Holy Spirit. And yes and no, because
- 20:53Scripture kind of contradicts that.
- 20:56It it does say that in one place, but it also says that
- 21:01they that the laying on of hands is when the Spirit came.
- 21:07So I'll read other parts of Scripture when that happens.
- 21:10And then it also the very first, I guess the first fruits of the
- 21:15Holy Spirit came at Pentecost when God sent, or I guess Jesus
- 21:20sent because he had ascended at that point, he was glorified.
- 21:24And so he sent the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit appeared as
- 21:27tongues of fire over the very first disciples of Jesus.
- 21:32And then my question is, does then the Holy Spirit gets get
- 21:38transferred by the laying on of hands?
- 21:42That's a question that I have because it talks about in the
- 21:45Bible when Simon the sorcerer saw that the Holy Spirit was
- 21:49giving given at the laying on of hands, he wanted it.
- 21:55And, and you see that in certain, certain denominations,
- 22:00they do that and others they don't.
- 22:03And, and others just think, you know, I mean, I can definitely
- 22:07tell a difference or see a difference.
- 22:12And I think there's, there's signs of the Holy Spirit within
- 22:16a person. And like I said, I'm going to
- 22:18get into that. We're about 20 minutes into this
- 22:19podcast. So I think I might need to do a
- 22:21separate podcast for this because I have questions and
- 22:23answers to read from the study Bible.
- 22:26So we'll go back to the tech to the, the Scripture.
- 22:30So the last, OK, this is the last verse 30.
- 22:37Well 31 and 32, I'll read it again.
- 22:40Rid yourself of all the offenses you have committed and get a new
- 22:44heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of
- 22:49Israel, for I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares
- 22:55the Lord. Repent and live.
- 22:59Repentance is so important. All right, 1st chapter 18.
- 23:08There are some questions and answers that I'll read.
- 23:11What did the people mean by this proverb?
- 23:14Eating unripe grapes leaves an unpleasant after taste.
- 23:18The point of this proverb is that Judah claimed that they,
- 23:22the children, were unfairly enduring the consequences of
- 23:26their ancestors or their parents deeds.
- 23:29Their thinking was wrong, for they had followed in the
- 23:33footsteps of their ancestors and they were receiving the just
- 23:37punishment for their own sins. Why was it wrong to have sexual
- 23:42relations with a woman during her period?
- 23:44In ancient Jewish law, a woman was considered ceremonially
- 23:49unclean and unable to participate in worship during
- 23:53her menstrual cycle. A man who lay with her was also
- 23:57ceremonially unclean and could not participate in worship.
- 24:02The regulation was partly hygienic and partly based on
- 24:06God's desire for purity in worship and relationships.
- 24:11Is it wrong to lend money with interest?
- 24:13Christians disagree on whether or not this prohibitation or
- 24:19prohibition still applies today. In the Old Testament period, it
- 24:24was wrong to charge interest on money loaned to a fellow Jew.
- 24:30Interest could be charged when lending money to foreigners.
- 24:34That's found in Deuteronomy chapter 23.
- 24:37When a loan was made, a service charge was usually included.
- 24:42Usury was condemned because it was an annual percentage rate on
- 24:46both the loan and the service charge.
- 24:49Charging interest becomes a sin when the charges are excessive
- 24:54and motivated by a desire for personal gain.
- 25:00Why does the father not share the Why does the son not share
- 25:04the guilt of his father? The Old Testament teaches that
- 25:08individuals sometimes suffer the consequences of their parents
- 25:12deeds. The Lord warned His enemies that
- 25:16their sin would have an adverse effect on their families through
- 25:20their lifetimes in Exodus 20 verse 5.
- 25:23But the people of Jerusalem were using that teaching as an excuse
- 25:28to avoid personal responsibility for their own sins.
- 25:33Ezekiel reminded them that each individual is held accountable
- 25:37by God for his or her own personal behavior.
- 25:41So sometimes because of ancestors sins, there are sins
- 25:47that are never dealt with. And when children are raised,
- 25:51they see the sins of their parents.
- 25:53It's never dealt with. So they repeat them.
- 25:56So you can see why there would be repetition in behavior by
- 26:02people, by whomever they were raised.
- 26:05They may pick up the character of their parent, but God was
- 26:11clarifying this, that you don't have to remain under that,
- 26:18making the same mistakes as your parents.
- 26:20You may have learned those mistakes, but you can stop it.
- 26:25Each person is responsible for their own sin.
- 26:27They can't blame. We can't blame other people for
- 26:30how we act. We are not puppets.
- 26:34Nobody has control of every single aspect of us.
- 26:39God created us to be free. We are influenced spiritually
- 26:44either by evil or by good. Whether we have God's Holy
- 26:48Spirit or we have the evil spirits of the world, God's
- 26:53enemy influencing us because like Scripture says, be alert
- 26:59and of sober mind because the devil is looking for his next
- 27:03victim. If we are, if we don't have a
- 27:06sober mind, if we have affected our mind with whatever it may
- 27:11be, any kind of drug, liquid alcohol, whatever effects our
- 27:16mind. If we get to a state where we're
- 27:18not thinking clearly, apparently that is an entry opening for an
- 27:24evil 1 to influence us because it says, you know, he's he's
- 27:30looking for his next prey. I mean, you can't fight him off
- 27:33when you are not thinking correctly.
- 27:35How many times when somebody is, you know, under the influence of
- 27:39something, do they do something that in their sober self they
- 27:46would say, I would have never done that, but I did it because
- 27:51I was under the influence. I mean, there's just so many
- 27:56examples of that. We can, we can see that.
- 27:59So is that the enemy taking advantage of somebody like that?
- 28:03It says the devil prowls looking for his next victim, and the
- 28:08devil seeks to destroy. How many people's lives get
- 28:12destroyed because they don't get a handle on not letting their
- 28:20mind be affected? I mean, not staying sober, you
- 28:24know, be not letting their mind be alert so their mind gets
- 28:28dull. It's not sober.
- 28:31They do it to seek, you know, comfort, I guess.
- 28:35But in doing that, the enemy comes and makes it worse than
- 28:39what they would have had if they just dealt with whatever was
- 28:44leading them to that place. So just very interesting when
- 28:50you read Scripture and notice these things.
- 28:54So then let's see, what else did Israel have a chance to avoid
- 29:02judgement? Yes, there are unspecified
- 29:06promises within prophetic words of judgement.
- 29:09One example is Jonah's message to Nineveh. 40 more days and
- 29:14Nineveh will be overthrown. That's in John chapter 3 verse
- 29:194. In that instance, there was no
- 29:22promise given for reprieve if the people repented.
- 29:28However, when they did repent, the Lord pulled back His
- 29:32judgment. This is the case throughout the
- 29:35prophets. There is always the potential
- 29:38for repentance and renewal. And then the last part is
- 29:45repentance, all that's needed to renew one's heart.
- 29:50When people truly repent of their sins, they allow God to
- 29:56take their hearts of stone and and by grace, the power given to
- 30:03us through the Holy Spirit create a new heart.
- 30:07A new heart is the fruit of repentance.
- 30:12It is God's sovereign grace at work in the believer.
- 30:18And that ends chapter 18. And I will do another podcast
- 30:23that just talks about the Holy Spirit and some verses in
- 30:27Scripture that I think relate to this.
- 30:32You know, to God's when he said, rid yourself of all the offenses
- 30:36you have committed and get a new heart and a new spirit.
- 30:41God can give someone the new spirit.
- 30:43And I want to talk more about that because this has been on my
- 30:46mind the last few days. But it's really important for us
- 30:50because Jesus said we need to be born again.
- 30:54We need to get a new spirit to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 30:59So I think it's really important for all of us.
