- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody. It's Jeff here. I wanted to
- 0:02Speaker 1: let you know we recorded this podcast episode on Sunday,
- 0:05Speaker 1: February second, twenty twenty five. By the time you hear this,
- 0:09Speaker 1: some things may have changed here or there, but we
- 0:10Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed the show. Welcome to Table Talk here
- 0:34Speaker 1: at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running
- 0:37Speaker 1: weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, over eleven
- 0:40Speaker 1: and a half years strong, and we got a great
- 0:42Speaker 1: discussion coming your way on Table Talk, as we do
- 0:45Speaker 1: every week. I gotta tell you I'm excited for the
- 0:48Speaker 1: upcoming golf season, folks. Yeah, that's right. The twenty twenty
- 0:51Speaker 1: five PGA Tour season is just upon us here. We're
- 0:55Speaker 1: gonna see some of our favorite golfers really doing some
- 0:59Speaker 1: interesting stop as we do year after year, at least
- 1:02Speaker 1: for those of us who are into the sport and
- 1:05Speaker 1: the game of golf. If you've been a long time listener,
- 1:08Speaker 1: you know Len and I have had some discussions here
- 1:10Speaker 1: and there about whether or not golf is a game,
- 1:12Speaker 1: whether or not it's a sport. We go back and
- 1:15Speaker 1: forth on it. I know we talked about this a
- 1:17Speaker 1: lot many many years ago when we first started the show,
- 1:19Speaker 1: but wanted to get into some golf talk as the
- 1:22Speaker 1: PGA Tour is really gonna be getting underway here in
- 1:25Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. We have got a great guest. We
- 1:28Speaker 1: got a lot of golf talk coming your way.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Let's get to it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Joining us from Trending in the Am. You can watch
- 1:34Speaker 1: them whether you're on Twitch over on YouTube. He's been
- 1:38Speaker 1: a good friend of the pod for many years. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: love the content that he is auditioning out every day
- 1:43Speaker 1: in the morning. Again on Trending in the Am, We've
- 1:46Speaker 1: got the one and only Phil Stifele.
- 1:48Speaker 2: How you doing, buddy, I'm doing fantastic. How are you
- 1:51Speaker 2: this afternoon? Doing all right?
- 1:52Speaker 1: I'm getting excited that the golf season is like, finally here,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm able to see some golf on my television.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Doesn't you feel like golf weather outside this exactly? I
- 2:01Speaker 3: just walked one of the dogs and that was quite cold.
- 2:03Speaker 3: But watching on TV is quite refreshing.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It has been very refreshing.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I mean, we recently had what the Pebble Beach like
- 2:09Speaker 1: pro am or something that we've been watching and just
- 2:11Speaker 1: like it's not the greatest golf in the world, it's
- 2:13Speaker 1: not the majors that we're used to seeing throughout the year.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But I'm really looking forward, philled to this coming season
- 2:20Speaker 1: and really what it's going to offer us golf fans.
- 2:23Speaker 1: But one of the things that really amazes me about
- 2:26Speaker 1: the golf world that I wanted to get into first
- 2:28Speaker 1: before we start talking about any players or anything like that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: First and foremost everybody, we're gonna be talking about men's golf.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I just wanted to throw that out there. Was thinking
- 2:36Speaker 1: about getting into some women's golf too, because women's golf
- 2:38Speaker 1: has really picked up some steam over the years for
- 2:40Speaker 1: a lot of different reasons. But hopefully we'll get into
- 2:43Speaker 1: some women's golf at some point down the road. But again,
- 2:46Speaker 1: one of the things that really amazes me about the
- 2:49Speaker 1: golfing world, Phil is how technology has really advanced over
- 2:53Speaker 1: the past couple decades, and it's very noticeable when we're
- 2:57Speaker 1: watching these different events in our homes, and I think
- 3:00Speaker 1: it's actually brought some more people into the world of golf,
- 3:04Speaker 1: into the game of golf and sport of golf, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: how many folks are now watching it, like whether it's
- 3:08Speaker 1: the shot tracer, which is amazing. One of my favorite
- 3:11Speaker 1: content creators out there is a guy named MKBHD Marcus Brownlee,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and he actually did a YouTube video on the shot
- 3:19Speaker 1: tracer and what that means and the technology that goes
- 3:22Speaker 1: into it, whether it's the audio as we're listening to
- 3:25Speaker 1: players on the course with their caddies, technology from our
- 3:29Speaker 1: own experiences on the golf course when we're golf and
- 3:31Speaker 1: we're using apps to see how far we are away
- 3:34Speaker 1: from the green. It's really amazing how far the game
- 3:37Speaker 1: of golf has come from a tech perspective. So to
- 3:40Speaker 1: start us out here, Phil, I wanted to get your
- 3:42Speaker 1: thought on how the advances in golf based technology have
- 3:46Speaker 1: really played a role in your opinion with regard to
- 3:50Speaker 1: expanding the viewership of the game and those who are
- 3:52Speaker 1: watching it at home.
- 3:53Speaker 2: What are your thoughts? Actually, I disagree.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I think brought a PGA Tour and lived and the
- 4:00Speaker 3: PGA Tour and all these leagues and golf leagues out
- 4:02Speaker 3: there haven't capitalized on the technology enough. Oh okay, now
- 4:07Speaker 3: a side note they're talking about because you know drivers
- 4:10Speaker 3: and irons, people are hitting the golf ball further and further.
- 4:13Speaker 3: This is not back in the day when we tiger
- 4:15Speaker 3: proofed courses, and we had to make them longer.
- 4:17Speaker 2: They're running out of room. They can't make them longer.
- 4:18Speaker 3: So they're talking about you know, golf rollbacks, you know
- 4:21Speaker 3: what I mean in a few years where they're gonna
- 4:22Speaker 3: put new rules on golf ball so they can't hit
- 4:24Speaker 3: it as far.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But what's the one thing that drives casual golf fans crazy.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It's a slow sport, right. And in the PGA Tour
- 4:33Speaker 3: the last year or so, more and more frequently they're
- 4:35Speaker 3: not finishing rounds, you know, on the day. Tournaments are
- 4:38Speaker 3: taking five days when they should take four days. They
- 4:41Speaker 3: don't capitalize on the golf technology to speed it up,
- 4:45Speaker 3: to make pace of play a little bit more enjoyable
- 4:48Speaker 3: for the casual fans.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I watch golf every weekend.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I watch rounds two, three, four, you know, NonStop, every
- 4:53Speaker 3: single weekend. But you know you've got like range finders.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Just let's use that for example. Yeah, they allow them
- 4:58Speaker 3: now on the Pea during the p Championship, the third
- 5:01Speaker 3: major of the year. They don't allow them anywhere else.
- 5:03Speaker 3: They've tested them out on the corn Ferry Tour. There
- 5:05Speaker 3: is talk now about them allowing you know, golfers to
- 5:07Speaker 3: use rangefinders, So not spending five minutes every hole counting
- 5:10Speaker 3: off paces to the green and whatnot.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Why aren't they doing that? You know, shot tracer.
- 5:15Speaker 3: You hit a ball into the woods and you're spending
- 5:16Speaker 3: five minutes looking for it. You would think that technology
- 5:19Speaker 3: is there for them to help find the golf balls
- 5:21Speaker 3: a little click right right. You know you've got you know,
- 5:23Speaker 3: a rules officials all over the course. Well, somebody needs
- 5:26Speaker 3: a rules official to make a rolling. Well, when we
- 5:29Speaker 3: do NBA basketball or football, you got refs in a
- 5:31Speaker 3: booth that are watching everything that can answer it. They're
- 5:34Speaker 3: talking about now bringing that into the game. The problem
- 5:37Speaker 3: is they're not capitalizing on the tech that is there
- 5:41Speaker 3: to really improve the game for the casual fans. I
- 5:44Speaker 3: will watch it every week, but my wife won't watch it,
- 5:47Speaker 3: or my brother who's just learning gops not watching it.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So they need to use that technology more to improve
- 5:53Speaker 3: the game, which would improve the telecast, which would bring
- 5:55Speaker 3: in more casual fans, which then would make the sport
- 5:57Speaker 3: a little bit bigger.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Do you think that that perhaps they're not utilizing it
- 6:01Speaker 1: to its fullest extent because of the traditionalists out there.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You know, let and I talk about it with the
- 6:07Speaker 1: game of baseball too, and we've seen it time and
- 6:09Speaker 1: time again.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Phil.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You know, with the game of baseball, it takes them
- 6:11Speaker 1: forever to get up to speed with things. So you
- 6:14Speaker 1: think that's what it is. The traditionalists absolutely.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, I know Tiger Woods is in
- 6:18Speaker 3: the conversation for later, but I'm just like, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: Tiger Woods is your biggest draw. You know, he's the
- 6:24Speaker 3: number one starr in golf, has been for the last
- 6:26Speaker 3: twenty five years.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yep.
- 6:27Speaker 3: He can't walk eighteen holes, not for four days in
- 6:30Speaker 3: a row, not like we're watching Pebble Beach this weekend.
- 6:33Speaker 2: He can't walk Pebble Beach. Well let them let him
- 6:36Speaker 2: ride a golf cart. At least you're gonna have that draw, right.
- 6:38Speaker 3: That's against the traditionalist style, and that's why I was
- 6:41Speaker 3: bringing it up. They don't like to change the traditions
- 6:44Speaker 3: of golf. Baseball has done that. They've changed a lot
- 6:47Speaker 3: of traditions and it's improved the pace of play, brought
- 6:50Speaker 3: in more casual fans and stuff like that. They're not
- 6:53Speaker 3: doing that in golf, and it's a shame. Just something
- 6:55Speaker 3: as simple as using range finders would probably knock fifteen
- 6:59Speaker 3: to twenty, and it's off of every single round of
- 7:02Speaker 3: guy and all these guys that can't finish their their
- 7:04Speaker 3: last two holes because of daylight.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Well, all of a sudden, you've finished those rounds. Spread
- 7:09Speaker 2: it up a little bit.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you make some good points here. See, I go
- 7:12Speaker 1: back to the days when I was watching golf with
- 7:14Speaker 1: my dad every Sunday, and you know, it was just
- 7:17Speaker 1: it was a slog to get through and I enjoyed it,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but it was a slog to get through that final
- 7:22Speaker 1: round when they didn't have the shot tracer, when they
- 7:24Speaker 1: didn't have other aspects of the technology. You couldn't hear
- 7:26Speaker 1: what was going on in the course or anything like that.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But you definitely raise some good points. And again folks
- 7:31Speaker 1: were talking to Phil Stifle from Trending in the Am.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You can search them out on YouTube, search them out
- 7:38Speaker 1: on whatever podcast platform that you are on at Beard
- 7:41Speaker 1: Acknowledge over on the Twitter dot com.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So I host just for you know, I do host
- 7:46Speaker 3: a golf podcast on Tuesday nights at six o'clock called
- 7:49Speaker 3: fair Way to Heaven.
- 7:50Speaker 2: There are you going to talk about each week's golf tournament?
- 7:52Speaker 2: So as well?
- 7:53Speaker 1: All right, very good, and I wanted to get into
- 7:56Speaker 1: the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf merger here because
- 8:01Speaker 1: there're gonna be some very very serious implications as it
- 8:05Speaker 1: pertains to the sport in the game of golf that
- 8:07Speaker 1: I think is really gonna be a key storyline this
- 8:09Speaker 1: year for us to follow, Phil, I mean, with the
- 8:11Speaker 1: future of the structure of the tour shifting, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 1: player movement, along with the mix of traditional and new events.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You know, fans are going to be watching how these
- 8:21Speaker 1: two sides really integrate between the two circuits. So I
- 8:26Speaker 1: do wonder how this is going to affect the overall
- 8:28Speaker 1: competitiveness and the reputation of the PGA Tour along with
- 8:32Speaker 1: the internationalization of the tour as well. It's gonna be
- 8:35Speaker 1: a very interesting storyline to follow. Wanted to get your
- 8:38Speaker 1: thoughts on on this integration and what we can expect
- 8:41Speaker 1: from this perhaps the season.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I don't know we'll see anything anytime soon. I mean
- 8:48Speaker 3: the Live PGA merger, I mean it was announced over
- 8:51Speaker 3: a year ago, almost a year and a half ago,
- 8:53Speaker 3: and there's still nothing has really happened. But what I
- 8:56Speaker 3: think they need to do because one of the big
- 8:59Speaker 3: issues in golf right now is personalities, and you know,
- 9:02Speaker 3: name players that are going to draw fans in the
- 9:05Speaker 3: biggest names, the biggest personalities are actually on the Live
- 9:09Speaker 3: Golf Tour. Scotti Scheffler might be the best golfer, but
- 9:12Speaker 3: he's a dry man to watch. You can't like watching
- 9:15Speaker 3: him golf unless you're a purest. You're pulled out of
- 9:17Speaker 3: your mind watching You want to watch Bryce and d Chambeau.
- 9:20Speaker 3: You want to watch you know, brooks Kepkat. You want
- 9:22Speaker 3: to watch these guys with personalities. They're on the live tour.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So they have to find a way because the merger
- 9:29Speaker 3: was really a financial merger. You know, the PIFF, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 3: the Saudi Ram, Saudi investment firm, you know, they invested
- 9:36Speaker 3: money into the PGA Tour to help Live is.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Not going anywhere. Live is not going to disappear.
- 9:41Speaker 3: They actually just this year signed a huge TV agreement
- 9:44Speaker 3: with Fox, so they're going to be for the first
- 9:45Speaker 3: time live on TV on Fox on a major network.
- 9:49Speaker 3: So they're not going anywhere. The problem is because the
- 9:52Speaker 3: live golfers don't get World Golf ranking points. Slowly but surely,
- 9:56Speaker 3: you're gonna see less and less live golfers as they
- 9:59Speaker 3: fall down the ranking being able to appear in the
- 10:01Speaker 3: major tournaments, and you're seeing some of the guys that
- 10:03Speaker 3: are on that fringe now playing in the secondary tours
- 10:06Speaker 3: that get ranking points and stuff like that to try
- 10:08Speaker 3: to keep their eligibility. What they need to do is
- 10:11Speaker 3: they need to find some kind of common ground. Whether
- 10:14Speaker 3: it's all right the twenty twenty five seasons complete, the
- 10:18Speaker 3: top twenty players on the Live Tour are eligible playing
- 10:22Speaker 3: all the majors and four events of their choice on
- 10:25Speaker 3: the PGA Tour or something like that, you know, some
- 10:28Speaker 3: kind of a thing like that, or I mean, the
- 10:30Speaker 3: big non traditionalists we talked about traditions of GoF about
- 10:33Speaker 3: Live is it's a three round tournament versus four.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:36Speaker 3: You know they already have calculations in place for the
- 10:40Speaker 3: Asian Tour, the DP Tour, every tournament not on the
- 10:43Speaker 3: PGA Tour is rated differently in the you know, official
- 10:46Speaker 3: World GoF rankings. Well, why can't they come up with
- 10:48Speaker 3: a ranking system for the live tournament?
- 10:50Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 10:51Speaker 3: Like instead of getting a hundred points, you get seventy
- 10:53Speaker 3: five points because you're playing three rounds not four.
- 10:56Speaker 2: What I'm just making up those numbers. But you get
- 10:58Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 10:59Speaker 3: You gotta find away because the number one issuing golf
- 11:02Speaker 3: right now is the draw on the PGA Tour. There
- 11:06Speaker 3: is no draw, there's no huge personalities, there's no there's
- 11:10Speaker 3: no Tiger Woods anymore, you know, like them or hate them.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Bryson D. Chambeau is the biggest drawing golf right now. Exactly.
- 11:18Speaker 3: We don't see him on our TVs on a weekly basis.
- 11:20Speaker 3: We see his YouTube. We see him hitting golf balls
- 11:22Speaker 3: over his house and trying to make hold in one.
- 11:24Speaker 3: We see this personality. He's actually this past week was
- 11:27Speaker 3: playing somewhere in Asia on some small tour and he.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Was asked why.
- 11:30Speaker 3: He's like, because I'm trying to help grow the game,
- 11:33Speaker 3: and I'm trying to help you know, other countries get
- 11:35Speaker 3: invested in our game. And I was like, he's wasting
- 11:38Speaker 3: a week ind of his life, not trying to win
- 11:40Speaker 3: the tournament, just trying. He was out on the range,
- 11:42Speaker 3: you know, signing autographs after this event this past week.
- 11:45Speaker 2: We don't have those personalities. The most golfers are boring.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I get that, but you gotta find a way to
- 11:51Speaker 3: engage the fans and by merging or coming to some
- 11:55Speaker 3: form of agreement so we can see more of these
- 11:58Speaker 3: lived golfers mix it up with the PJ golfers. I
- 12:01Speaker 3: mean they're not even invited to the Ryder Cup for
- 12:04Speaker 3: the Presidents Cup or any of that stuff. You know,
- 12:06Speaker 3: that's that's not good for the game. The partnership that
- 12:10Speaker 3: you talk about is a financial partnership. They got to
- 12:12Speaker 3: find an agreement to keep the players playing together even
- 12:16Speaker 3: if they're on separate tours.
- 12:17Speaker 1: They're definitely moving into snail's pace. We can definitely say
- 12:20Speaker 1: that's ridiculous.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Yes, I mean it all comes down to and not
- 12:23Speaker 3: to get to, you know, out of control on this.
- 12:25Speaker 3: It comes down to J moynihan, the commissioner of the
- 12:28Speaker 3: PJ Tour. I mean, you say what you will about
- 12:30Speaker 3: Roger Goodell or Adam Silver, any of these other commissioners.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I mean J moyhan how he's kept his job, I
- 12:36Speaker 3: have no idea. It's incredible, how literally trying his best
- 12:40Speaker 3: to ruin the PGA Tour.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's like in baseball, all these guys, it's amazing. I
- 12:47Speaker 1: actually think Roderdell would probably be the best one out
- 12:50Speaker 1: of them all.
- 12:51Speaker 2: That's I don't know.
- 12:52Speaker 3: And that's the problem though, because like in sports, the
- 12:55Speaker 3: owners of the teams, you know, are the boss or
- 12:58Speaker 3: the commissioner I guess, or the commissioner.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Who paid like the PJ.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Toyer pays, you know, Jay moynan, and he's his own
- 13:04Speaker 3: boss basically, right. He doesn't have that body of people
- 13:07Speaker 3: like the players can't fire him, you know what I mean.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So that's kind of the tough spot that they're in there. Absolutely.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Well, look, you mentioned Tiger Woods earlier, and I want
- 13:15Speaker 1: to get into some of these storylines here that we
- 13:17Speaker 1: may be seeing in twenty twenty five. Tiger Woods certainly
- 13:21Speaker 1: is one of those players, and I really do wonder
- 13:25Speaker 1: where his career really kind of goes from here. I mean,
- 13:28Speaker 1: we've seen him scale back playing in a number of
- 13:30Speaker 1: tournaments over the years, rightfully so with his injury history,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and I would expect that to continue of cours here
- 13:36Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. But I do wonder how many
- 13:39Speaker 1: majors he's going to play in and how much of
- 13:42Speaker 1: a golf mentor, you know, he's going to be to
- 13:44Speaker 1: other young players coming up the ranks, not just his
- 13:47Speaker 1: son Charlie, but but how many other young golfers that
- 13:50Speaker 1: he will be that mentor for where he can possibly
- 13:53Speaker 1: get that next big personality, explain to them what it
- 13:57Speaker 1: means how to go about the business.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Perhaps, I don't know.
- 14:00Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on what we may see from
- 14:02Speaker 1: Tiger Woods this coming year, Phil, First.
- 14:05Speaker 3: And foremost that you mentioned his son, Charlie, who's a
- 14:07Speaker 3: heck of a young goy. For yes, the thing, if
- 14:10Speaker 3: there's people out there that think that the PGA Tour
- 14:12Speaker 3: needs saving, you know what's gonna save the PGA Tour.
- 14:16Speaker 3: You put Charlie Woods in the Masters on an exemption
- 14:20Speaker 3: and have them paired in the first two rounds with
- 14:22Speaker 3: his dad.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Then an actual competitive.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I'm just telling you, Tiger and Charlie on the course
- 14:27Speaker 3: together is money they used to have.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Well they still have the event, the Zurich Classic. It's
- 14:32Speaker 2: like tag team.
- 14:33Speaker 3: It's like it's a you know, tag team, Champions of
- 14:35Speaker 3: the World, the PGA tag team, you know what I mean.
- 14:37Speaker 2: And just put them in that event together.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I mean like it would it would, It would do
- 14:40Speaker 3: ratings out the wazoo.
- 14:42Speaker 2: It really yep.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But Tiger's first Tiger's playing career. Tiger was supposed to
- 14:47Speaker 3: play more this year. He played all four majors last year.
- 14:51Speaker 3: He's only played seven events since the start of the
- 14:53Speaker 3: twenty twenty two season, for them being last year.
- 14:56Speaker 2: He was supposed to play more this year.
- 14:59Speaker 3: With the the format of the elevated events that they've
- 15:02Speaker 3: instituted the last couple of years. He was given a
- 15:05Speaker 3: special exemption to play in all elevated events. Cobble Beach
- 15:09Speaker 3: is the first elevated event outside of the Century, which
- 15:11Speaker 3: is a champion's only event, the first real full elevate event.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And he's not there at Pebble Beach this week because
- 15:16Speaker 3: he can't walk the course.
- 15:18Speaker 2: In a couple of weeks.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Genesis, which is being moved from the legendary Riviera Country
- 15:22Speaker 3: Club to Tory Pines because of the fires in California.
- 15:25Speaker 3: That's normally a course that's his sponsored event. He would
- 15:28Speaker 3: normally play it. He hasn't committed to play in it yet.
- 15:31Speaker 3: I expect him to play the four Majors or at
- 15:33Speaker 3: least give it a go. I will say him and
- 15:35Speaker 3: Rory McElroy starting the TGL, the Tomorrow Golf League or
- 15:38Speaker 3: whatever they're calling it, which is like the Golf Simulator League,
- 15:42Speaker 3: setting him at least a little bit more given competitive
- 15:46Speaker 3: throughout the year. So maybe that helps him get to
- 15:49Speaker 3: a fifth or sixth event. But I think the days
- 15:51Speaker 3: a Tiger doing anything but playing in the four majors
- 15:54Speaker 3: is going to be very far and few between. And
- 15:57Speaker 3: he does that and the days they can compete in
- 16:00Speaker 3: the events. I mean, he missed three of the four
- 16:02Speaker 3: cuts last year. The only cut he made was the Masters,
- 16:04Speaker 3: and he missed the cutting the other three majors. But
- 16:07Speaker 3: him as the leader, the person that's growing the game,
- 16:09Speaker 3: that helping the game, you know, it's it's it's weird.
- 16:13Speaker 3: So Rory McElroy, he was really the front poster child
- 16:15Speaker 3: of Anti Live for a while and it hurt his game. Yep,
- 16:19Speaker 3: he's dialed back his leadership role and he's playing really
- 16:22Speaker 3: great that he's tired. We're recording this on Sunday. He's
- 16:24Speaker 3: tied for the lead at the Pet Pebble Beat right now.
- 16:27Speaker 3: So he's dialing back his relate. Is this is where
- 16:29Speaker 3: Tiger Woods can come in. Tiger Woods is only playing
- 16:31Speaker 3: four times a year. He should be taking that leadership role.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Is he. I'm not really sure.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Is he a mentor Maybe the problem is with golf
- 16:39Speaker 3: mentoring to grow the game.
- 16:41Speaker 2: You can. You can teach guys.
- 16:42Speaker 3: How to GoF you can't teach these guys how to
- 16:44Speaker 3: be a person out right, So you just can't. You know,
- 16:47Speaker 3: you know, these golfers are wearing mics on holes and
- 16:50Speaker 3: talking to the announcers and stuff like that.
- 16:52Speaker 2: They're dry.
- 16:53Speaker 3: The TGL the new golf, indoor golf simularly is supposed
- 16:56Speaker 3: to be showing the personalize these golfers.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Unfortunately, there is there's no personality in the common golfer.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I don't know if Tiger can grow the future of
- 17:05Speaker 3: the game, but Tiger hanging around as long as he can,
- 17:10Speaker 3: even if it's just a few times a year, can
- 17:12Speaker 3: help sustain the game until we get lucky and find
- 17:15Speaker 3: another Bryson d.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Chambeau that stays on the PGA Tour to make.
- 17:20Speaker 1: You're absolutely correct, because even if Tiger Woods is playing
- 17:23Speaker 1: like dog crap, I'm still gonna put I'm still gonna
- 17:25Speaker 1: put my TV on and watch them because you know what,
- 17:27Speaker 1: I want to see that swing.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I just do And I was always taught by my
- 17:32Speaker 3: father In all sports. When you get to live during
- 17:35Speaker 3: a generational talents, you know era whether you like the
- 17:39Speaker 3: team they play on or don't like the team, like
- 17:41Speaker 3: Michael Jordan. My dad always told me, you, oh you
- 17:43Speaker 3: don't like the Bulls, that that's fine, but you'll never
- 17:45Speaker 3: see another Michael Jordan, so you better watch every second
- 17:47Speaker 3: you can. And that translates to Tiger We'll never see
- 17:50Speaker 3: another Tiger Wood. Probably not that has the whole package,
- 17:54Speaker 3: the golf, the business, acumen, the personality, all of that.
- 17:59Speaker 3: You'll never see another Tiger Woods.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Probably.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Absolutely. Why you can't, absolutely, dude. Last night I was
- 18:04Speaker 1: watching the Lakers next game. Why because I don't know
- 18:07Speaker 1: how much longer we're gonna see Lebron James, regardless of
- 18:09Speaker 1: what you think of him, is one of the greatest
- 18:11Speaker 1: physical athletes that has ever played a sport in the
- 18:14Speaker 1: history of sports, and we just don't know how much
- 18:16Speaker 1: longer we're gonna see him. So I was watching the
- 18:19Speaker 1: game last night, and I'm not even a Lakers or
- 18:21Speaker 1: Knicks fan, by the way, So but as we're moving
- 18:23Speaker 1: along with a conversation here, I'm really you know, I'm
- 18:26Speaker 1: really excited to see what the younger talent possibly does
- 18:29Speaker 1: in terms of how they blossom this year. You know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: players like Will Zalatoris, Tom Kim Joaquim Neeman are a
- 18:37Speaker 1: few guys that I'm gonna be keeping my eyes on
- 18:39Speaker 1: this year, Phil and I guess the question will be
- 18:42Speaker 1: can they compete consistently with guys like Scottie Scheffler and
- 18:47Speaker 1: Roy McElroy. I'm wondering, like, who are you keeping your
- 18:50Speaker 1: eyes on this year? In terms of the younger talent
- 18:53Speaker 1: that we're gonna be seeing on the tour? Do you
- 18:55Speaker 1: have any names?
- 18:56Speaker 2: All right? First for it, what do you consider younger talent?
- 18:58Speaker 2: Because Will's alators. People don't realize it.
- 19:00Speaker 3: He's already twenty eight years old because he missed every
- 19:02Speaker 3: year he's gotten up there top t him. I love
- 19:05Speaker 3: that name, and Nieman's on the Live Tour Nieman. Ifneman
- 19:08Speaker 3: does not have a good showing at the Masters, yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 3: he might lose his World Golf ranking.
- 19:13Speaker 2: State.
- 19:13Speaker 3: He's one of those guys I was talking about earlier
- 19:15Speaker 3: that needs to play other events because he's one major
- 19:18Speaker 3: away of missing the cut of losing his exemption to
- 19:21Speaker 3: get into the rest of the Major.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So, I mean, he's a great young talent.
- 19:26Speaker 3: But that's a great example of what I was talking
- 19:28Speaker 3: about before about finding a common ground because he plays
- 19:32Speaker 3: great on the Live tour. Yeah, problem is you're not
- 19:34Speaker 3: earning those World GoF ranking points.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So that's that.
- 19:37Speaker 3: The problem is if you consider twenty eight Wills Tours
- 19:40Speaker 3: young enough, there's a lot.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Like dude, I thought he was like twenty five. I'm
- 19:43Speaker 1: thinking he's like still like twenty five years two. He
- 19:45Speaker 1: missed two years almost completely. Yeah, with a back injury.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And that's why I'm a big better. Like my show
- 19:50Speaker 1: centers around gambling on golf.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I refuse to bet on Willsal Tours anymore until
- 19:55Speaker 3: I see him win again because he hasn't been consistent
- 19:58Speaker 3: since the back end.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Ye, you know what I mean.
- 19:59Speaker 3: He's he got a little bit of personality. He's got
- 20:01Speaker 3: that long, lanky swing. He did supposedly put on fifteen
- 20:04Speaker 3: pounds of muscle, which we heard without Boem that too,
- 20:07Speaker 3: and that didn't help.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I will see the phillies.
- 20:09Speaker 3: But anyway, so young names that I'll look to to
- 20:13Speaker 3: carry the game first and foremost, the youngest of them all.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And I butcher names all the time.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Excenames, They're horrible, yestea. Yeah, twenty three, he's got two
- 20:24Speaker 3: wins in the last three years. He's got a little
- 20:27Speaker 3: bit of personality. He was semi getting famous his rookie
- 20:30Speaker 3: year a couple of years ago because he was living
- 20:31Speaker 3: in a van with a girl he met on Tinder
- 20:34Speaker 3: or some dating app that became his caddy and they
- 20:37Speaker 3: were living in the van. Driving to tournament. There's a
- 20:39Speaker 3: person he was ripping his shirt off. The dude skinnier
- 20:42Speaker 3: than you know, a stick figure, but he crushes the ball.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So he's got a little personality if he can develop
- 20:47Speaker 3: his game to compete on the major level. And I
- 20:51Speaker 3: do think his game is perfect for an event like
- 20:53Speaker 3: the Masters. And I'm not saying he's gonna win the
- 20:55Speaker 3: Masters this year, but his game fits Augusta National very well.
- 20:58Speaker 3: And those kind of creative things. He's got a little
- 21:00Speaker 3: bit of the Bubble Watson in him.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 3: He just goes out there and just I think I
- 21:04Speaker 3: can curve this golf ball at a ninety degree angle
- 21:06Speaker 3: and then draw it back in the other Like.
- 21:08Speaker 2: He has that creativity to him.
- 21:10Speaker 3: He's a name I think will be a major champion
- 21:12Speaker 3: in the next year or two.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So that's a guy I keep an eye on to.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Heath Tagala.
- 21:16Speaker 3: He's twenty seven now and he's got one win in
- 21:18Speaker 3: twenty twenty three, but he's still pretty young and new
- 21:21Speaker 3: on the tour. Yeah, love his game. I just looked
- 21:24Speaker 3: to the names that the big names. I look at
- 21:26Speaker 3: Xander Schaffle, even though he's you know, pushing thirty. Yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 3: but he finally broke through and won two majors last year.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Wyndham Clark, who's got a fiery personality, who won the
- 21:35Speaker 3: US Open two years ago, and I not to get
- 21:38Speaker 3: a little low brow with the humor, Victor Hoblin was
- 21:41Speaker 3: always the guy I thought was going to be that guy.
- 21:44Speaker 3: He showed up two years ago to the end of
- 21:47Speaker 3: year awards banquet with two supermodels under each arm.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Okay, I'm like, this guy gets it.
- 21:53Speaker 3: He's twenty four whatever he is, he's got two no girlfriend,
- 21:55Speaker 3: he's just got two girls under each arm, and he's
- 21:58Speaker 3: out there having a great time playing out.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I'm like, that's what this game needs.
- 22:01Speaker 3: You know, that that that that that, that whimsical look personality. Unfortunately,
- 22:05Speaker 3: he's changed his swing seventy five times and you know
- 22:07Speaker 3: he hasn't been able to to to really sustain it.
- 22:10Speaker 2: But they're the names I looked for. Problem is Xander Schopfel.
- 22:13Speaker 3: He was probably the second best golfer on the PGA
- 22:15Speaker 3: Tour behind Scotty has no personality. Yeah, when he was
- 22:19Speaker 3: on the TGL a few weeks ago, it was the
- 22:22Speaker 3: lowest ratings in their four week you know, short four
- 22:24Speaker 3: week history. Because he was the biggest name. Everyone tuned in.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Everyone realized this guy's boring as can be on TV.
- 22:30Speaker 3: So you know that's really the problem. Who's the great
- 22:33Speaker 3: golfers or who's the personalities?
- 22:35Speaker 2: What do you want to see?
- 22:36Speaker 3: And I think Petella, though, really is the guy that
- 22:39Speaker 3: has that potential personality, what guy to win but also
- 22:43Speaker 3: to to grow the game.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I think you dished out some really really good names there.
- 22:47Speaker 1: But you know, we mentioned Rory McElroy a number of
- 22:51Speaker 1: times already. He is a guy you know that I
- 22:54Speaker 1: and so many others root for year after year. I mean,
- 22:58Speaker 1: he has won the FedEx Cup, he won that back
- 23:00Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two. He's always competitive in several majors
- 23:04Speaker 1: and I think a lot of us are going to
- 23:05Speaker 1: be watching him closely this year to see if he
- 23:08Speaker 1: can secure more major wins as one of the storylines
- 23:11Speaker 1: of this coming PGA Tour. Just again, in terms of
- 23:15Speaker 1: the storylines, where do you see Rory McElroy in his
- 23:18Speaker 1: career at this point. And I don't know if you
- 23:20Speaker 1: want to, because I know you know Fairway to Heaven
- 23:23Speaker 1: podcast that you host. I don't know if you want
- 23:24Speaker 1: to get into maybe some like betting type stuff with
- 23:27Speaker 1: this as well. You don't have to, But where do
- 23:29Speaker 1: you see Rory McElroy in his career at this point?
- 23:32Speaker 3: I mean, Rory McElroy is still a great golfer, and
- 23:37Speaker 3: I'm hoping this year we see a little bit turnaround
- 23:39Speaker 3: since he's taking less of the fight against living PGA
- 23:44Speaker 3: Tour on and he's focusing on golf a little bit more.
- 23:48Speaker 2: The problem with that with Rory is all about scheduling.
- 23:51Speaker 3: He's got so many other things that he's involved in,
- 23:55Speaker 3: and the PGA Tour schedule is a pretty grueling thing.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yeah, he won once last year.
- 24:00Speaker 3: He's been top five in the Tour championship standings, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 3: top ten the last five years with one Tour Championship win.
- 24:07Speaker 3: He's won the Tour Championship twice. He hasn't won a
- 24:10Speaker 3: major in a really long time. And I don't think
- 24:12Speaker 3: that's because his game's not great. It's just that we
- 24:15Speaker 3: can mention thirty five golfers names. The PGA Tour might
- 24:19Speaker 3: not have a lot of Scotty Scheffler's or Rory's, but
- 24:21Speaker 3: they've got a lot of really good golfers, accept Stracas
- 24:24Speaker 3: of the World, the cam Davis, the Justin Rose is
- 24:27Speaker 3: still playing.
- 24:28Speaker 2: At a high level.
- 24:29Speaker 3: They got a lot of really good golfers. So it's
- 24:31Speaker 3: very hard to win on the PGA Tour. That's why
- 24:34Speaker 3: what Scotty s Sheffler did last year was so amazing.
- 24:37Speaker 3: It's very hard to win on the PGA Tour. Can
- 24:39Speaker 3: Rory win another major? Absolutely? Is he playing well this
- 24:43Speaker 3: year the start of the year. Yeah, he's playing very good.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Will he I would not bet on Rory McElroy to
- 24:49Speaker 3: win another major this year because the odds just won't
- 24:52Speaker 3: be spicy enough for me to lay a bet on it.
- 24:55Speaker 3: In the golfing world, when you're talking about betting, you
- 24:58Speaker 3: when you bet a football game it's minus one ten
- 25:00Speaker 3: or plus one twenty five, you're getting even money basically
- 25:02Speaker 3: on your money, give or take. Golf world, the top golfers,
- 25:06Speaker 3: the favorite golfer Scotty Cheffer this past week that was
- 25:09Speaker 3: I think he was four to one to win the event.
- 25:11Speaker 3: And that was the favorite, and some casual football fans
- 25:14Speaker 3: we had all four to one. That's great in the
- 25:16Speaker 3: golf world, when there's one hundred and fifty six golfers
- 25:18Speaker 3: at an event, they're not really great eyes. So Rory
- 25:21Speaker 3: mcroy's eight to one, nine to one, second or third
- 25:24Speaker 3: every single week. It's hard to bet him to win. Yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 3: because there's no value in the golf world, in the
- 25:28Speaker 3: golf betting world there Kenny.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Sure will he it's it's gonna be, it's gonna be
- 25:33Speaker 2: really tough.
- 25:34Speaker 3: He'll win at least one or two tournaments this year,
- 25:36Speaker 3: will finish in the top ten in the in the
- 25:38Speaker 3: the Tour Championship.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Again, he's that good.
- 25:41Speaker 3: But I think the days of him being a regular
- 25:44Speaker 3: winner in the in the majors, and I think it
- 25:47Speaker 3: might be it might be gone.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we You were talking about his consistency
- 25:50Speaker 1: with Rory at the end of the day, and he
- 25:51Speaker 1: doesn't get that guy I was.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Talking about on my show the other day because we
- 25:54Speaker 3: were trying to figure out why it's so hard early
- 25:57Speaker 3: in the season. There's so many tournaments early in the
- 25:59Speaker 3: season in Jen Why in the start of February, Why
- 26:03Speaker 3: is it so hard to draw the big names to
- 26:04Speaker 3: these events.
- 26:05Speaker 2: It's because they have eight elevated events.
- 26:07Speaker 3: You got four majors, you got the Players Championship, and
- 26:09Speaker 3: you got the three playoff events.
- 26:11Speaker 2: That's sixteen tournaments right there in about a twenty two
- 26:13Speaker 2: week stretch.
- 26:14Speaker 3: That's sixteen to twenty two weeks on the road nonstopin
- 26:18Speaker 3: the PJ. Tory needs to do something to stretch out
- 26:20Speaker 3: the schedule a little bit. Spread the schedule out a
- 26:22Speaker 3: little bit more, or give them by weeks mixed in.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Then you would see more competitive tournaments, and you might
- 26:28Speaker 3: you might see Rory playmore, you might see Rory win more.
- 26:31Speaker 2: He's young, he's got a family, he's.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Got a wife, you know what I mean, not spending
- 26:34Speaker 3: as much time as he used to there. So maybe
- 26:37Speaker 3: working on the schedule would change some of the results
- 26:39Speaker 3: of some of the people like Rory.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I think it's a great point, great great point, buddy.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Before I let you go though, you know, we talked
- 26:47Speaker 1: about some young guys coming up the ranks just a
- 26:49Speaker 1: few minutes ago, but kind of a more general question
- 26:53Speaker 1: for you again before I let you head out here,
- 26:55Speaker 1: wondering who you are seeing as just major contenders, this season.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Of course, Scotti Scheffler is up there for me, is
- 27:02Speaker 1: as he should be for everybody. Colin Mari Kawa, he's
- 27:07Speaker 1: up there for me as well. Who are you seeing
- 27:10Speaker 1: as some major contenders this year that we need to
- 27:12Speaker 1: keep our eyes on.
- 27:14Speaker 3: And I love that you mentioned Colin Morri Kala's name,
- 27:16Speaker 3: because everyone loves Kalin Moore.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Kyley's one of the one of the best golfers in
- 27:19Speaker 2: the world.
- 27:20Speaker 3: I don't know if you realize he hasn't won since
- 27:22Speaker 3: twenty twenty three in the Zozo, which is like one
- 27:24Speaker 3: of the knockoff tournaments. His last major win the Open
- 27:27Speaker 3: in twenty twenty one. That's how difficult it is to
- 27:30Speaker 3: win on tour. But Klin More Kaala is a guy
- 27:33Speaker 3: that's consistently there. He's young enough.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I could see Colin Mori Kawa winning a major this year. Obviously.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Scotty Schefler is always going to be the favorite in
- 27:40Speaker 3: every event he tees it up in. He'll probably win
- 27:43Speaker 3: or be in the top three of the Masters again
- 27:44Speaker 3: this year. Yep, I still and I know you're not
- 27:47Speaker 3: a huge Bryson d. Chambeau fan, but Bryson D. Chambeau
- 27:50Speaker 3: is good for the game, and he's a reigning major champion.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Bryson will be in contention at every single major this year, and.
- 27:58Speaker 2: His personality is kind of changing flipment. People are starting
- 28:01Speaker 2: to like him.
- 28:01Speaker 3: He's going from the heel to the face in wrestling terms. Yes,
- 28:04Speaker 3: so he's gonna be a guy that's there. I think
- 28:09Speaker 3: Sanders Shoffley is about to go. He won twice last
- 28:11Speaker 3: year at major events. He can never win the big one,
- 28:14Speaker 3: supposedly winning twice last year, I think we're on the
- 28:17Speaker 3: Xander train now.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I think Xander's going to rattle off or.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Four more majors in the next two years because Xander Shoffley,
- 28:25Speaker 3: while boring, is a phenomenal golfer. And I think this
- 28:29Speaker 3: is the year that Justin Thomas gets back in the
- 28:32Speaker 3: major championship winner circle. This year, He's won the PGA
- 28:36Speaker 3: Championship before. It's a perfect tournament for his skill set.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I could totally see Justin Thomas winning that again, or
- 28:42Speaker 3: maybe a US Open.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I've got my eye on Justin Thomas all year long.
- 28:46Speaker 3: And if you want a guy that hasn't won a
- 28:48Speaker 3: major that might win one this year, this one.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I'm trying to I'm trying.
- 28:53Speaker 3: I want to say betea again, but I just don't
- 28:56Speaker 3: know if he's quite ready there.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Sam Burns, Oh, I'm a huge Sam Burns fane.
- 29:01Speaker 3: He's never won a major, but he's been in contention,
- 29:03Speaker 3: He's won on the tour a few times. Sam Burns
- 29:05Speaker 3: is a grinder. He's not flashy one bit, but he
- 29:08Speaker 3: is a grinder. And that's what you need to win
- 29:11Speaker 3: the PGA Championship. That's what you need to win the
- 29:13Speaker 3: Masters or the US Open. You need a grinder. And
- 29:15Speaker 3: Sam Burns he was in contention this week at at
- 29:17Speaker 3: and T for a good stretch of until the weather
