Transcript
- 0:21And welcome back to another fabulous edition of World Retail
- 0:25Signals with my Co host Ian and Neeve.
- 0:28Neeve is there. Trust me, we're putting it to
- 0:30the cloud gods that her video will upload to the cloud.
- 0:33If it doesn't, we'll still start with Neeve, and hopefully we'll
- 0:38capture what's top of mind for you this week.
- 0:40Neeve. Hi Alex, yes, I'm here.
- 0:42Hopefully my video does come through, but if not audience
- 0:45Prime today, I really wanted to talk about this growing issue of
- 0:50shop crime, which continues to escalate across a number of
- 0:53major markets, particularly here in the UK and and across Europe.
- 0:58And we're seeing more and more news stories coming out about
- 1:01that at the moment. And what's notable now I really
- 1:04think is that it's not just being talked about as shrink or
- 1:07loss, but increasingly we're hearing retailers talk about
- 1:11this is a serious safety issue for for retail workers.
- 1:14And we're seeing retailers respond in a few key ways, which
- 1:17I think it is really interesting in terms of a signal from from
- 1:21the global retail community and many more investing in store
- 1:25level security and technology, rolling out more AI enabled
- 1:29monitoring and but also importantly pushing for stronger
- 1:33collaboration with governments and law enforcement.
- 1:36And I really think it's, it's indicative of the how retailers
- 1:40are rethinking the in store experience itself, balancing
- 1:43that openness and accessibility with safety and control.
- 1:48So it's really becoming a defined operational challenge
- 1:52for the next few years. And how retailers are responding
- 1:55to it is also coming up more and more in, in these news stories.
- 1:59And is it correct for the shop staff to, to target and, and to
- 2:03confront shoplifters and, and gangs of youth?
- 2:07So or, or should they rely on the police presence?
- 2:10So yes, definitely a key top of mind point for retailers.
- 2:15Why don't we move on to, I don't know how much of that will
- 2:17capture or not, but Ian, why don't?
- 2:19Why don't we move on to you, Sir?
- 2:20Tell me what? Top of mind, Yeah.
- 2:22Hi Alex. Yeah, something a front of mine
- 2:25for me. I was really interested last
- 2:26week in EU kao.com which is a specialist online retailer in
- 2:32home appliances and electronics posted some really, really
- 2:36strong figures that surprised in a very good way the the city and
- 2:41and investors. I mean they grew profits by 35%
- 2:44for the full year and revenues by 7%.
- 2:47So that kind of that conversion on that revenue growth is
- 2:50really, really impressive. And you know, it's, it's had a
- 2:52bit of a a chequered sort of recent performance.
- 2:55So that turn around is good. And on top of that, Currys again
- 2:58in the UK, which operates through Europe, the the CEO Alex
- 3:02Baldock, who's been there for eight years, announced that he's
- 3:05moving on in the summer. But but I think he leaves it in
- 3:08a really, really good place. Again, it's been really tough in
- 3:11the whole sector. And so it just struck me as, you
- 3:15know, how competitive the retail is that this kind of really
- 3:19consumer goods LED sector is performing quite strongly.
- 3:22I think that's through the resilience of those retailers.
- 3:25And then I think also, you know, the World Retail Congress being
- 3:29in Berlin and Germany this year, the news from a few months back
- 3:33was Chinese pureplay, giant.jd.com bought economy in
- 3:39Germany, which is the media Mart Saturn business.
- 3:41So I just thought it's really, really interesting that suddenly
- 3:44there's a focus on this, you know, very, very competitive
- 3:47sector that's being really challenged.
- 3:50That's, you know, I think the retail leaders have really
- 3:54grappled with and in a positive way the, the issues that kind of
- 3:57deliver those kind of performances.
- 3:59And I think going back to this economy in Germany, it's going
- 4:01to be absolutely fascinating to see what jjd.com bring because
- 4:06they, they do have physical retailers in this space in, in
- 4:09China. So it's going to be fascinating
- 4:11to see what they do to really shake up the the sector.
- 4:13Yeah, I find it. I mean, we can actually see you.
- 4:18We get I, I think it's jd.com also launched Joy.
- 4:23I think it's in the, which apparently was a failed attempt
- 4:28that they came back and tried to re enter the UK market with Joy,
- 4:32which we'll see. Time will tell if that's a
- 4:34success or not. Neva, do you have another one?
- 4:37We got the UK crime one. Did you have another theme that
- 4:40you want to talk about? Yeah.
- 4:41And interestingly, Alex, it's linked to what you just brought
- 4:44up there about retailers who potentially had challenges
- 4:48entering a market and are trying again.
- 4:50And we've seen that a few in a few news stories this week as
- 4:53well. Uniqlo is a great example and
- 4:56they've had a mixtrack record and some Western markets in the
- 5:00past, but they're coming back with clearer brand positioning,
- 5:03better real estate choices and a much stronger understanding of
- 5:07local consumers. And we're also seeing something
- 5:10similar with Sephora after stepping back from certain
- 5:13markets where they where they had some challenges, they're
- 5:16again re entering with a really strong Omni channel model, more
- 5:20emphasis on experience and services and a really confident
- 5:24brand proposition. And I think that's super
- 5:26interesting that, you know, even if retailers haven't got it
- 5:30quite right in the past, that they can re enter markets and
- 5:34rethink where it went wrong in the past.
- 5:36And I'm really correct. And then interestingly in the
- 5:39news this week, noticing that gym shark opening in a Miami
- 5:43gym, which is really exciting. So really expanding their US
- 5:48presence, but also really focusing on that experiential
- 5:51side of the brand, on the gym experience itself rather than
- 5:56just a store transactional location.
- 5:59Yeah, I mean, I, I guess I love Gym Shark's Regent Street store,
- 6:04but I I can't, I can't always be.
- 6:06I love, I love, I have to be on it.
- 6:08I don't particularly love the New York store, but it's OK.
- 6:12It's, I don't know if you ever went to show Fields.
- 6:14It's a really awkward building with one lift that goes through
- 6:18all floors. But anyway, but but I do love
- 6:20the what they've done and how they've grown.
- 6:22I think it's a phenomenal use case.
- 6:24So it's really, it is really interesting and I love to see
- 6:27how maybe your retailers at your show sort of talk about this new
- 6:31entrance coming into the market, specifically from China, because
- 6:35it feels like there's a bit of a a global movement.
- 6:37Some UK brands are going to the Usus are coming to the UK real
- 6:41going. Ian, how about you, Sir?
- 6:43What's your second one? Yeah.
- 6:45Well, it I was on from Neve's focus there on international
- 6:49expansion because in a similar way I wanted to sort of pick up
- 6:52on international, but more specifically around Africa.
- 6:55And I was talking yesterday to the head of international for
- 6:59CAR 4, which is interesting because they operate a franchise
- 7:02model. And, and just as Neve said, you
- 7:04know, they've had a pretty chequered very recent period
- 7:08where they've been retrenching from market rethinking the whole
- 7:11model. But, but, but, but still very
- 7:13much focusing on franchising. But they had a big press
- 7:17conference in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria yesterday, where they
- 7:20had government ministers there and ambassadors and a really
- 7:23high turn out because they have just announced a franchise
- 7:27partnership with Hypercity, the Nigerian food retailer.
- 7:30And with, you know, big ambitions for that huge market.
- 7:34I think that will bring it to Italia, 15 countries in Africa
- 7:38that CAR 4 is now in. So I think there's A and they're
- 7:41opening in Ghana later this this year, which they announced
- 7:44earlier this year. So, you know, Africa comes up in
- 7:47many conversations when people are talking about which regions,
- 7:50which markets to look at. And you know, you know, people
- 7:54have been speaking about the Middle East until recently, but
- 7:57you know, India, but Africa, you know, it's, it's interesting.
- 7:59This is definitely seen as a really exciting market that's
- 8:03that's opening up and modern retailing is, is really
- 8:06developing fast in those vast countries That I think is just
- 8:11just proves that it's one to watch.
- 8:13But also, you know how, you know, retailers are just looking
- 8:16around the world and, you know, seeing how they can bring their
- 8:19formats and again, to nice point, you know, you have to
- 8:22adapt and amend them to to fit to fit the the the market.
- 8:27But no, I mean, I think Africa is, yeah.
- 8:28No, no, sorry to interrupt you. No, I was just really finishing
- 8:31off saying Africa is definitely I think a market increasingly to
- 8:35watch. Yeah, I, I, I find that
- 8:37fascinating because I know Carrefour quite well and I know
- 8:40how well they dominate obviously France and and pocket Europe,
- 8:44but how well they do in South America.
- 8:47And so that's super fast. I can imagine people watching
- 8:50that really closely to see will you will they be successful
- 8:55expanding in the region, which I think, yeah, I've not heard that
- 8:59anywhere else. Feels like a bit of an exclusive
- 9:00you bought there. I've not seen that anywhere.
- 9:04But anyway, OK, my point finally, I think I focusing on
- 9:09the USI bring the same theme that we were all talking about,
- 9:13which I think what executives are fingering and where we are.
- 9:16There is a story of two halves in retail right now.
- 9:20Some people are closing, some people are expanding, and mine
- 9:23too are exactly that. You have on the on the negative
- 9:27side, Macy's announcing 150 store closures, but companies
- 9:31like TJ Maxx and Trader Joe's opening new stores.
- 9:35I don't think they offset each other.
- 9:37You know, Macy's 150. Trader Joe's is 18 in 12 and 12
- 9:41states. So there isn't an offset in
- 9:44terms of, you know, people unfortunately losing their jobs
- 9:48and going straight to another retailer.
- 9:50But from a retail industry perspective, the big middle
- 9:54seems to be disappearing and value or all premium seem to be
- 9:59growing. And so grocery is a really
- 10:01interesting one to watch. But yeah, I think the reduction
- 10:05in a lot of people who are commentators on department
- 10:09stores in the US will put the argument, well, department
- 10:13stores are in decline. People that want to go in them,
- 10:15I don't know. I have, I have, I think, you
- 10:17know, boring, badly crafted department stores are inclined.
- 10:21People still do want to go to one place and get everything.
- 10:24And so good department stores will, I think, you know, do
- 10:28well. And I think even Macy's model,
- 10:30they've got a few brands underneath their Macy's brand
- 10:34that have done well. So I don't want to sort of broad
- 10:36brush, all department stores are in decline and doing well
- 10:39because I don't think globally that is true at all.
- 10:42But Trader Joe's, again, you know, doing really well, growing
- 10:45new fit. And and here's the other thing,
- 10:47physical stores are growing, which I think testament to
- 10:51people are investing in AI, people are investing in
- 10:54technology, but the investment in store and all three of us
- 10:57have spoken about store format investment in physical and
- 11:00expansion. So the capital is still coming,
- 11:03but capital allocation and what is being spent and what is being
- 11:07a grown I think is the interesting one.
- 11:10And we're almost in the middle of the year.
- 11:12So it's one to watch as we go through the air.
- 11:16Yeah, definitely. Definitely.
- 11:18OK, well listen, we've done that as as always, straight on time
- 11:22leave. Hopefully when we do your for
- 11:24update, we'll see more of yeah, fingers crossed to the to the
- 11:29clouds gods. Until next week, we've got one
- 11:32more show and then it's your big show.
- 11:34I know, exciting. It's exciting we'll be able to
- 11:38poke each other in real life. Do it in real life.
- 11:43Anyway, until then, thank you so much.
- 11:47Thanks, Alex. Thanks.
- 11:48Bye now. Bye.
