- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:31Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:34Speaker 1: in the world, over thirteen years strong. As always, we've
- 0:38Speaker 1: got a great table talk show and interview a great
- 0:41Speaker 1: discussion coming your way. This week, we're gonna be diving
- 0:44Speaker 1: into the world of women's basketball, both from an NBA
- 0:48Speaker 1: perspective college basketball experience as well, but the experience from
- 0:53Speaker 1: an online experience and specifically with a brand new site
- 0:57Speaker 1: in an app called backcore iq and with us is
- 1:02Speaker 1: our good friend. Her and her co founder were on
- 1:05Speaker 1: the show a few months back, but they've launched everything.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I wanted to bring her back just to talk about
- 1:11Speaker 1: this more and get the word out more. We've got
- 1:13Speaker 1: our good friend, Alyssa Freda, thanks so much for joining us.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Melissa, Hi, Jeff, thanks so much for having us. We're
- 1:19Speaker 2: very happy to be here and excited to dive in.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look, you've done a great job thus far. And
- 1:24Speaker 1: I remember our conversation earlier this year about what you
- 1:27Speaker 1: were hoping to do with backcourt iq and again, folks,
- 1:31Speaker 1: head on over to backcourtiq dot com. Great great platform
- 1:36Speaker 1: and we're gonna be talking about this platform. I mean
- 1:39Speaker 1: this is the digital home of women's basketball, both professionally
- 1:45Speaker 1: in college basketball as well. And when you were again,
- 1:48Speaker 1: when you were on before, we had discussed how, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 1: women's basketball has really grown in terms of its audience.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So I'm hoping we can get the conversation started by
- 1:57Speaker 1: talking about how you want to core relate backcourt IQ
- 2:02Speaker 1: with the growth of women's basketball. What does that look
- 2:04Speaker 1: like to you?
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know, as different leagues start popping up,
- 2:09Speaker 3: we're seeing Upshot and you know, au all these different
- 2:13Speaker 3: leagues international, we want to be growing right alongside them.
- 2:18Speaker 3: So as they're as they're popping up, as they're you know,
- 2:20Speaker 3: gaining popularity, we want to also be supporting that and
- 2:24Speaker 3: just providing that visibility, extra visibility so that people know, Okay,
- 2:29Speaker 3: there's other games going on right now, Like, yes, it's
- 2:32Speaker 3: amazing that we have the w NBA on, but there's
- 2:34Speaker 3: also an upshot game happening right now. So just really
- 2:38Speaker 3: to bring everything together into one place where the word
- 2:42Speaker 3: is out about all different leagues, all different players everywhere.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, because of the growth of women's basketball as well,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and again, you know we talked about it when you
- 2:54Speaker 1: were on before, it's not just Caitlin Clark that has
- 2:57Speaker 1: done wonders for the game. It's been growing ever since,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know, she really came onto the scene. There are
- 3:03Speaker 1: so many female basketball athletes that have really helped to
- 3:08Speaker 1: take whether it's WNBA or whether it's I love watching
- 3:11Speaker 1: women's college basketball because of the product. It's so good.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's just fun to watch. It's a lot more fun
- 3:17Speaker 1: to watch than men's college basketball in my personal opinion.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And you know, what you want to do at backcourt
- 3:23Speaker 1: iq is really highlight that aspect of it and to
- 3:28Speaker 1: get into the different platforms that you have generated and
- 3:33Speaker 1: created and how they can actually be useful and what
- 3:36Speaker 1: they're gonna end up giving fans of women's basketball. I'm
- 3:39Speaker 1: hoping we can get into that a little bit more here.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So there's the website backcourt iq and you can also, folks,
- 3:45Speaker 1: if you can go to it's not only on the
- 3:47Speaker 1: apps the Apple App Store as well, but where else
- 3:50Speaker 1: can folks find that? At ALYSSA.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, so actually we are still launching. We haven't launched
- 3:55Speaker 3: to the app store yet. Oh yeah, we'll becoming.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Site there.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, but we will be launching that very soon this month.
- 4:06Speaker 3: We plan to do it before All Star weekend, so
- 4:08Speaker 3: we're super excited for that. But yeah, you can find
- 4:10Speaker 3: it on the web, but we are going to have
- 4:12Speaker 3: the iOS version and then we're also going to have
- 4:14Speaker 3: Android that's just coming a little bit later.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yep. All right, So to get into these platforms and
- 4:20Speaker 1: what folks will be experiencing, I'm wondering, how did you
- 4:23Speaker 1: decide on what information would be front and center on
- 4:28Speaker 1: the website, because you know, when you go to backcourtiq
- 4:31Speaker 1: dot com, there's a lot of stuff there. How did
- 4:34Speaker 1: you guys decide guys? I'm sorry I always say guys,
- 4:37Speaker 1: how did you ladies decide on what information would be
- 4:39Speaker 1: front and center on the website there?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so my bind, my mind kind of works in buckets.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I like to have pretty neatly, nicely organized, and so
- 4:50Speaker 3: we decided to have a homepage where everything but just
- 4:55Speaker 3: bits in pieces of everything. So it was like a
- 4:57Speaker 3: truly a main page where you get to all these
- 5:00Speaker 3: different things, with the summary of your favorite teams, your
- 5:04Speaker 3: favorite what games are on right now, what games are happening.
- 5:08Speaker 2: We wanted that to be front and centive, so that that's.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Exactly where people's eyes went, if you know, they didn't
- 5:14Speaker 3: know there was a game on, or they just wanted
- 5:16Speaker 3: to watch them basketball. And then as we started to
- 5:19Speaker 3: go through, we realized there's other apps out there that
- 5:21Speaker 3: have analytics, or they have the community, or or it's
- 5:26Speaker 3: a but there's something that really had them all in
- 5:29Speaker 3: one place, and so we wanted to really emphasize that
- 5:31Speaker 3: community aspect. And you know, obviously it's not just community.
- 5:37Speaker 3: We also have you know, all the game information, player information,
- 5:40Speaker 3: anything you could need is on the app. But the
- 5:43Speaker 3: community is what people coming back. So really the last
- 5:47Speaker 3: really prioritize building that out and making it a place
- 5:51Speaker 3: where people can come and post they're playing a pickup game,
- 5:55Speaker 3: if they are looking for training, if they're hosting a
- 5:58Speaker 3: watch party, like we have created all these different avenues
- 6:02Speaker 3: on the app for people to come together, and we've
- 6:06Speaker 3: got a section for women's sports bars and you choose
- 6:09Speaker 3: your city and it helps you find that. So that's
- 6:12Speaker 3: been really exciting kind of growing the community aspect. And
- 6:17Speaker 3: another feature that we're really excited for is this creator
- 6:21Speaker 3: marketplace that we've got and so we found so many
- 6:25Speaker 3: amazing independent creators who create merch or content. Someone makes
- 6:31Speaker 3: amazing key chains of player jerseys and things like that.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So just amazing art, beautiful work, but you don't always
- 6:39Speaker 3: know about it if you're not in those specific pockets
- 6:42Speaker 3: of community, Like Threads is a place right now where
- 6:46Speaker 3: the women's basketball community is huge, but if you're not
- 6:48Speaker 3: on there, you might not know about these creators. And
- 6:51Speaker 3: so putting them on the platform where it kind of
- 6:54Speaker 3: links out to what they're doing, their work, anything they want, truly,
- 6:58Speaker 3: they get to create a profile. But it's again to
- 7:01Speaker 3: bring visibility not just to players, not just to the game,
- 7:04Speaker 3: but then to the creators who are also you know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: designing and creating all this amazing work that the community
- 7:11Speaker 3: is looking for and has been looking for. You know,
- 7:13Speaker 3: they don't want the generic shirts that you can find anywhere.
- 7:17Speaker 2: We have creators who are just creating the most insane merch.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I wear it all the time all around and everyone
- 7:23Speaker 3: is always complementing it and asking who made it.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And that's yeah, so that's been really cool.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's a it's a really good segue
- 7:31Speaker 1: into a thought that I've recently had, you know, not
- 7:34Speaker 1: just in terms of you know, getting ready to talk
- 7:36Speaker 1: to you about backcoardiq dot com and your endeavor but
- 7:40Speaker 1: you know, so many different content creators, individuals in the
- 7:45Speaker 1: online world, online space, podcasters, bloggers, even success looks differently
- 7:52Speaker 1: to everyone. And in terms of unfortunately, what analytics are,
- 7:57Speaker 1: what numbers are, things like that, we don't get. I
- 8:00Speaker 1: don't get into the analytics of this podcast platform. I
- 8:02Speaker 1: remember so many years ago when I started this podcast,
- 8:05Speaker 1: somebody said, if you start looking into analytics of downloads
- 8:10Speaker 1: and where people are listening, blah blah blah, you are
- 8:12Speaker 1: going to lose your passion for your podcast and why
- 8:16Speaker 1: you are talking about what you want to talk about.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And with regard to website creation and creating that community, like,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I wonder, what does success look like when it comes
- 8:26Speaker 1: to community engagement for you with regard to Backcourt.
- 8:30Speaker 3: IQ, Yeah, honestly, for me, it would be me logging
- 8:34Speaker 3: into the app and just seeing a ton of events
- 8:38Speaker 3: being posted, people actually using it and you know, maybe
- 8:42Speaker 3: tagging on social media and seeing that they're at events
- 8:45Speaker 3: that were put on the app.
- 8:48Speaker 2: That is so that is exactly what success looks like.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I would love to just see everybody engaging and like
- 8:53Speaker 3: having meaningful dialogue. There's also you know a place where
- 8:56Speaker 3: you can just talk and people can jump in and comment.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah like that.
- 9:00Speaker 3: But seeing that be active is that's the dream come true.
- 9:03Speaker 3: So we definitely were definitely excited for that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Why was it important also to build an app that
- 9:10Speaker 1: complemented the website as well? Because backwardiq dot com great website.
- 9:16Speaker 1: But why did you all want that app? You and
- 9:18Speaker 1: your co founder, why did you want that app to
- 9:20Speaker 1: complement the website?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Kristin and I, we were really adamant that this
- 9:25Speaker 3: would always be like become an app and just thinking
- 9:29Speaker 3: about user experience and the likelihood of someone you know,
- 9:34Speaker 3: pulling their phone out and just going right into the app.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It's already locked in with everything, all your info and
- 9:40Speaker 3: just quickly checking a score versus having to go onto
- 9:42Speaker 3: the website and like re sign in and all of this. Yeah,
- 9:46Speaker 3: it creates a different user experience, and we wanted it
- 9:51Speaker 3: to feel just easier to access and to kind of
- 9:56Speaker 3: become that go to app. Like for me, despite the
- 9:59Speaker 3: fact that it is still on the website, I have
- 10:03Speaker 3: trained myself like, if I want to know what a
- 10:05Speaker 3: score is, I go to the app, even though it
- 10:07Speaker 3: does take signing in and looking for me that it's
- 10:11Speaker 3: important that we're using it and we're getting a good
- 10:13Speaker 3: feel for it, but yeah, it's going to change the
- 10:17Speaker 3: entire user experience. And we brought on an amazing ux developer,
- 10:21Speaker 3: a very good friend of mine, and she has transformed it.
- 10:25Speaker 3: It looks so beautiful on the web and on the
- 10:29Speaker 3: iOS app that we've been able to see during our testing.
- 10:33Speaker 3: And yeah, she's just work some magic. So I think
- 10:36Speaker 3: the user experience is going to be really elevated.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And I'm wondering if there has been a feature on
- 10:43Speaker 1: the app itself too, like especially you know what once
- 10:46Speaker 1: once we're able, once we are able to get it
- 10:47Speaker 1: on iOS because and I asked this because the website
- 10:53Speaker 1: experience for these type of community experiences there's so much
- 10:58Speaker 1: different than apps and websites. They just differ here. And
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm sorry about the word salad folks right there, but
- 11:03Speaker 1: I mean, I'm wondering if there has been a feature
- 11:06Speaker 1: on the app that was more difficult to build and
- 11:08Speaker 1: develop than maybe you thought, because this stuff isn't easy
- 11:11Speaker 1: to do at all. I mean, was there an aspect
- 11:14Speaker 1: that was a little bit more difficult in terms of
- 11:15Speaker 1: the app?
- 11:16Speaker 3: Oh?
- 11:16Speaker 2: For sure.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I think most time was probably spent on either the analytics,
- 11:22Speaker 3: which Kristen has done just an incredible job. I cannot
- 11:25Speaker 3: wait for everyone to see it. The visuals she's created
- 11:30Speaker 3: that has been very time intensive and honestly a labor
- 11:34Speaker 3: of love for her. She loves to do it and
- 11:37Speaker 3: it shows. But I think also the community page that
- 11:41Speaker 3: took a lot of kind of like wiring to make
- 11:45Speaker 3: sure that everything flows well, that you can comment, that
- 11:48Speaker 3: you can like, that, you can delete things, like all
- 11:50Speaker 3: these little things that.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Like I didn't originally think about.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Yeah, when we're building, it's like, oh wait, now this
- 11:57Speaker 3: is built, but actually we need to add this and
- 11:59Speaker 3: this and all these things start popping up, and how
- 12:01Speaker 3: do we make it connective and just beyond just functionality,
- 12:06Speaker 3: how do we make this something that people actually want
- 12:09Speaker 3: to use? And so more of that strategic lens as
- 12:11Speaker 3: well to kind of increase user engagement and make sure
- 12:16Speaker 3: it actually is a community that gets used.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well, folks, we're going to go
- 12:21Speaker 1: to break here. But before we do again, Alyssa, tell
- 12:24Speaker 1: everybody where they can find backcourt iq. Of course backcourt
- 12:28Speaker 1: iq dot com, but where they can follow you all
- 12:31Speaker 1: on socials out there to learn more.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, backcourt iq on Instagram it's just our name, and
- 12:38Speaker 3: we're also on threads with that same account, and we're
- 12:40Speaker 3: very active on threads. We have a really great community there.
- 12:44Speaker 3: If you love women's basketball, you've got to be on
- 12:46Speaker 3: threads because that's it's just where it is, where it's at.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right, folks, we're going to take
- 12:52Speaker 1: a break. When we come back, we're going to talk
- 12:53Speaker 1: to a Lissa more not only about backcourdiq dot com
- 12:57Speaker 1: and their endeavor, but also some women's basketball. I want
- 13:01Speaker 1: to talk about that as well. A couple topics there.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Stick around. We'll be back in just a bit. All right,
- 13:07Speaker 1: We're back with our good friend Alyssa Freda from backcourtiq
- 13:11Speaker 1: dot com. As we're moving along with a conversation here,
- 13:14Speaker 1: you know, I think a lot of us go to
- 13:16Speaker 1: certain websites, Alyssa and more sports based websites out of
- 13:21Speaker 1: kind of a what i'd like to call passive consumption
- 13:24Speaker 1: of that particular content. And I'm wondering how you're planning
- 13:28Speaker 1: on encouraging people to actually interact, to actually become part
- 13:33Speaker 1: of that community rather than just relying on the Again,
- 13:36Speaker 1: the passive consumption aspect of what many sports websites actually
- 13:40Speaker 1: are what are your thoughts here?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so more of a recent development, we decided to
- 13:45Speaker 3: create profiles and the ability to you know, link to
- 13:49Speaker 3: different things and have a profile picture and actually follow others.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That was not originally part of the plan.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Okay, and so we added that in and then the
- 13:59Speaker 3: live chats that we have for each game. That is
- 14:03Speaker 3: a place where we really think a lot of engagement
- 14:05Speaker 3: can come from and people will actually want to stay
- 14:08Speaker 3: for it. We've been thinking through having you know, different
- 14:12Speaker 3: creators maybe host a chat or post comments. We have
- 14:16Speaker 3: an amazing brand ambassador and so having her be engaged
- 14:20Speaker 3: on it for us, it's yeah, it's it's evolving even
- 14:28Speaker 3: like we just keep thinking of new things that we
- 14:30Speaker 3: can add and like the coming launches.
- 14:33Speaker 1: But and that's okay, by the way, Like that's okay.
- 14:36Speaker 1: We've been doing this podcast show for thirteen years. We
- 14:39Speaker 1: got to a point on year twelve where we were like,
- 14:42Speaker 1: you know what, we should probably go to video as well.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You know, the product, it evolves, you expand it here
- 14:48Speaker 1: and there, you get rid of some things here and there,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and it's okay, it really is at the end of
- 14:53Speaker 1: the day, because we evolve as people. We progress as
- 14:56Speaker 1: people and the things that we like to follow. Things
- 15:01Speaker 1: change over time, so it's I'm just like, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 1: it is perfectly cool to just you know, alter course
- 15:08Speaker 1: every now and again.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, No, definitely, and I think it's it's even crucial
- 15:12Speaker 3: to just to you know, make sure the app is
- 15:15Speaker 3: still providing the community with what it needs, what it wants.
- 15:20Speaker 3: We're part of that community, so we definitely have that
- 15:23Speaker 3: kind of like insider view of it and of what
- 15:27Speaker 3: we're currently missing as a women's basketball community. But yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 3: always changing, always thinking of what comes next and what
- 15:34Speaker 3: we can create that maybe just hasn't even been done
- 15:38Speaker 3: at all before, while also trying to stay really present
- 15:42Speaker 3: in the fact that this is probably the most exciting thing.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I've ever worked on and been a part of. And
- 15:48Speaker 2: I'm sure Kristen feels the same.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It's just, yeah, so being in the moment, but also, yeah,
- 15:53Speaker 3: we've got a lot, We've got a lot coming up.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Absolutely All right, Well, let's move into some women's basketball talk,
- 16:01Speaker 1: because honestly, we don't get into it enough on this
- 16:03Speaker 1: podcast platform. And seriously, I can slap myself in the
- 16:06Speaker 1: face because of that. I probably should, because again because
- 16:09Speaker 1: I love women's college basketball. It's fantastic. But I'm wondering,
- 16:13Speaker 1: as mentioned at the top, just the growth of women's basketball.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'm wondering, and I know it's a general question, but
- 16:19Speaker 1: you know, which levels of the game do you think
- 16:21Speaker 1: are growing the fastest? Fastest? Is it the WNBA, is
- 16:24Speaker 1: it college basketball or even you know, international recruiting as well?
- 16:29Speaker 1: What levels are growing the fastest do you think and why?
- 16:32Speaker 3: Yeah? I think obviously we have WNBA's growth, incredible expansion
- 16:37Speaker 3: teams like we I can't wait.
- 16:39Speaker 1: For Phillies in twenty thirty by the way.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Like I can't wait for that too.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Oh gosh.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yeah, We're We're seeing a lot of growth there, obviously unrivaled.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It just continues to grow and it's one of the
- 16:52Speaker 3: most exciting leagues to watch. But I think what's not
- 16:56Speaker 3: talked about enough is the international game and recruitment from there,
- 17:00Speaker 3: not just for you know, the pros, but also in
- 17:03Speaker 3: college We're seeing a lot and so that's been pretty exciting,
- 17:07Speaker 3: and just the talent from overseas that now that you know,
- 17:11Speaker 3: for the w NBA specifically, we've got a new CBA agreement,
- 17:15Speaker 3: We've got all these different aspects that are going to
- 17:18Speaker 3: bring people here versus before it was sending players from
- 17:23Speaker 3: the US abroad for better opportunities. So I think that
- 17:28Speaker 3: that new agreement has really contributed, and you know, the
- 17:31Speaker 3: the change in pay and all of that, all that
- 17:34Speaker 3: come that comes with it, It's definitely incentivized, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 3: more people to come play here, which is great. And
- 17:41Speaker 3: also I think just the expansion and the fact that
- 17:45Speaker 3: we have these expansion teams, more spots, open up more
- 17:49Speaker 3: spots for players, and I mean the talent is just incredible.
- 17:53Speaker 2: It is.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It absolutely is. And before I let you go, before
- 17:57Speaker 1: we end our discussion here, just you know, getting into
- 18:00Speaker 1: WNBA season hopin we can really talk about that next
- 18:04Speaker 1: generation of stars that are really raising your eyebrow during
- 18:09Speaker 1: this twenty twenty six season. Here, I'm wondering, you know,
- 18:12Speaker 1: which players are you really high on thinking that they
- 18:14Speaker 1: are going to be able to take not only their
- 18:18Speaker 1: game but the brand of the NBA to the next level.
- 18:21Speaker 1: You know, whether it's this season maybe future seasons, which
- 18:25Speaker 1: players are you really high on here?
- 18:26Speaker 3: Alyssa, Yeah, okay, so just looking specifically at rookies right now.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Obviously Asy Fudd, she's incredible, She her game is not
- 18:37Speaker 3: is not talked about enough, is not appreciated enough.
- 18:39Speaker 2: It's all the little things.
- 18:41Speaker 3: I mean, her defense is incredible, her shooting, like truly
- 18:47Speaker 3: every aspect of her game is awesome. And I think
- 18:50Speaker 3: that she's really going to step into that even more
- 18:54Speaker 3: as she grows in the league and is in the
- 18:56Speaker 3: league longer. So really excited to see where she goes.
- 18:59Speaker 3: I believe she's a generational player and so excited to
- 19:02Speaker 3: see that. Obviously, cannot, I cannot not speak about that
- 19:07Speaker 3: was also a words healid.
- 19:08Speaker 2: But have to talk about Olivia Miles. She's I mean,
- 19:13Speaker 2: I knew she would be great, and.
- 19:15Speaker 3: She she's the way she can handle the ball and
- 19:20Speaker 3: make plays, her court vision, like everything, it's just she's
- 19:23Speaker 3: crafty and I think she's doing amazing with the links. Obviously,
- 19:27Speaker 3: she's got a great a great coach to learn from,
- 19:31Speaker 3: great teammates, all of that.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So I'm I'm really excited to see where she goes.
- 19:36Speaker 3: And then I think I want to think of one
- 19:38Speaker 3: that's maybe not talked about as much. Okay, I've been
- 19:42Speaker 3: I've been watching Sydney Taylor recently and she's Yeah, she
- 19:48Speaker 3: she was not on my radar, but she is really
- 19:51Speaker 3: showing out. She's giving Chicago really solid minutes and I
- 19:55Speaker 3: think she's going to be one to watch, so excited
- 19:58Speaker 3: to watch her growth.
- 19:59Speaker 1: She's got twelve point two points per game, one point
- 20:03Speaker 1: three assists, one point three rebounds per game. You know,
