- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families Podcast. It's the podcast for.
- 0:07Speaker 2: The time poor parent who just wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now, Welcome to the Happy Family Podcast. I'm justin. I'm
- 0:12Speaker 1: here with Kylie among our six kids. I'm the author
- 0:15Speaker 1: of a whole bunch of books, the co host of
- 0:16Speaker 1: a TV show called Parental Guidance, all about raising kids,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and a whole lot of other stuff. And today you
- 0:21Speaker 1: just happen to have joined the podcast. Maybe you're new here.
- 0:24Speaker 1: If you are, you've joined us on one of the
- 0:26Speaker 1: most exciting podcasting days in our podcasting history. It might
- 0:30Speaker 1: not be exciting for you at all, but it's really
- 0:31Speaker 1: exciting for us.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, let's just say your tagline just got a bit longer.
- 0:35Speaker 1: My tagline meaning all the stuff that we ah. Yeah,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I don't want to reveal too much. Okay, So we
- 0:41Speaker 1: have some news. We have some really big news. We
- 0:44Speaker 1: are the parents, as I mentioned, of six children. I
- 0:47Speaker 1: nearly said seven children, but I'm not going to say
- 0:49Speaker 1: that we're the parents of seven children. But we are
- 0:50Speaker 1: the parents of six kids. Our oldest daughter has been
- 0:53Speaker 1: married for what almost four years? Nearly four years? Yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: four years in a couple of months time and a
- 0:59Speaker 1: few weeks ago, she asked if the whole family could
- 1:01Speaker 1: get together to have dinner. We said, of course, we
- 1:03Speaker 1: love when the family gets together. So we all got
- 1:05Speaker 1: everyone together and after dinner, we sat around and we
- 1:09Speaker 1: played some pictionary. But there was something going on with
- 1:11Speaker 1: the pictionary game because you decided to set it up.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Rather than playing proper dictionary, you did a Kylie Coulson
- 1:18Speaker 1: Pictionary Special. What were the details of that Kylie Culson
- 1:22Speaker 1: Pictionary Special, Missus Happy Families.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well, when you're playing pictionary, obviously, there's usually just a
- 1:27Speaker 2: couple of teams and you're playing team against team and
- 1:30Speaker 2: there's only one person drawing. So we thought we'd kind
- 1:33Speaker 2: of change it up, and we had multiple teams. So
- 1:36Speaker 2: there was four teams, and because.
- 1:39Speaker 1: We have a big family, it was like three or
- 1:41Speaker 1: four teams were competing to be the first one to
- 1:45Speaker 1: guess the same thing. Okay, so on each team, one
- 1:49Speaker 1: person was the person drawing. All of the drawers got
- 1:53Speaker 1: to see the same word and then they would go
- 1:54Speaker 1: to their individual boards and start drawing, and everyone else
- 1:57Speaker 1: on their team, the two or three other people and
- 1:58Speaker 1: their team had to get and whichever team was first,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and there was a series of themes that remained consistent
- 2:05Speaker 1: with every single word that was drawn out.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Like they were just household items.
- 2:10Speaker 1: They were all just household items. But this is kind
- 2:13Speaker 1: of what happened, eh am awake. So I should warn
- 2:27Speaker 1: you that as we play more audio clips from the
- 2:30Speaker 1: next few minutes, it's chaos in our home. We have
- 2:32Speaker 1: six kids, we've got grandparents there, there's there's a whole
- 2:35Speaker 1: lot of other people who are in our home with us,
- 2:37Speaker 1: joining in for what's going to be a really fun
- 2:39Speaker 1: pictionary night. And you can just hear the chaos. You
- 2:41Speaker 1: can hear all of that. This is a raw that
- 2:44Speaker 1: there is.
- 2:45Speaker 2: There is no editing here anyway.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Ella Ella notices at some point that there's something going
- 2:52Speaker 1: on with the words of this I love this, So
- 3:02Speaker 1: she's kind of recognized that there is this common theme
- 3:05Speaker 1: with all of the words that are coming up. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: then one of the other kids says this, which.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Led to one of the kids actually accusing me being pregnant.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Getting ready to tell us that she's pregnant again, are
- 3:22Speaker 1: you pregnant, honey? So this conversation suddenly turns into a
- 3:26Speaker 1: big discussion about pregnancy, and as you.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Can tell, in our house, there's never just one speaker.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We need a talking stick in our home. So then
- 3:35Speaker 1: this happens. You've read there.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So our eldest daughter has made it official. I'm going
- 3:48Speaker 2: to be having a baby.
- 3:52Speaker 1: In September.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Chaos ensued following their announcements.
- 4:01Speaker 1: What are you crying? So everyone's crying except one of
- 4:09Speaker 1: the kids, our nineteen year old, the muso, the one
- 4:11Speaker 1: who is so in touch with her feelings. Why she's crying?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Why is crying? Why are you all crying? You're all crying?
- 4:22Speaker 1: What the heck?
- 4:23Speaker 2: And in case you're still wondering what the heck is
- 4:26Speaker 2: going on right now, our son in law made it
- 4:30Speaker 2: extremely clear.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Baby, one of our kids has always been really softhearted.
- 4:37Speaker 1: She cries at the drop of the hat. I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 1: she's the most emotional kid in a really positive and
- 4:42Speaker 1: delightful way most of the time that we that we
- 4:45Speaker 1: have and as the reality sunk in, this is what happened.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I didn't you grand didn't click.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Seconds.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Mommy and I are going to be grandparents. You're going
- 5:00Speaker 1: to be older you.
- 5:09Speaker 2: What I just loved about this experience was for Annie.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It was these incremental aha moments. First and foremost, her
- 5:19Speaker 2: sister is having a baby yep, and then she's going
- 5:24Speaker 2: to be an auntie.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And we're going to be grandparents.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But that had blew up even further for her when
- 5:29Speaker 2: she realized that, man, we were going to be grandparents.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It was just such a big moment.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So in case this has just been a bit too much,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and we apologize if it has been, because our family
- 5:40Speaker 1: is a little extra. The short version is we're going
- 5:44Speaker 1: to be grandparents. The short version, we're going to be grandparents.
- 5:47Speaker 1: The news is out. It's official. Our daughter has given
- 5:49Speaker 1: us full permission to announce it. On the podcast of
- 5:52Speaker 1: the Dog wants to know what's going on? Do you
- 5:58Speaker 1: know what something really funny has had And in terms
- 6:01Speaker 1: of this whole whole thing, and Kylie, you remember this
- 6:04Speaker 1: conversation happening some years ago. I think they've only just
- 6:07Speaker 1: gotten married, and I said to them, what are your
- 6:10Speaker 1: plans for a family? I mean, it's your life, it's
- 6:12Speaker 1: your decision. Now, we don't have any say in it,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but i'd just love to know what are your planning?
- 6:16Speaker 1: What are you thinking about? And they said, oh, it's
- 6:19Speaker 1: it's going to be good four or five years. Well,
- 6:20Speaker 1: we'll certainly be waiting before we have any kids, and
- 6:23Speaker 1: I kind of breathed the sigh of relief, and I said,
- 6:25Speaker 1: that's great, because I want to be fifty or above
- 6:28Speaker 1: before you have your first grandchild. Not my business, you
- 6:30Speaker 1: have them whenever you want. But and they look at
- 6:32Speaker 1: me funny, and I said, now, let me explain, because
- 6:34Speaker 1: I want to be a grandpa who can be available,
- 6:36Speaker 1: like when that kid's big enough to go after school.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I want to ride my bike next to that kid
- 6:41Speaker 1: as we'd ride off to school together. I want to
- 6:43Speaker 1: do the school drop off on the pickup. And I
- 6:45Speaker 1: want to be that involved grandparent. And I looked at
- 6:48Speaker 1: the kids and I just said, and guys, right now,
- 6:50Speaker 1: there's too much happening with happy families and with books
- 6:52Speaker 1: and with TV shows. It's not something that I can
- 6:56Speaker 1: really commit to for the next few years. So just
- 6:58Speaker 1: take your time. It's okay, take your time. And that's okay.
- 7:00Speaker 1: They've waited three years and we've still got another five
- 7:02Speaker 1: years before the school run happens. But when I knew
- 7:07Speaker 1: it was going to happen sooner than later, and I
- 7:11Speaker 1: was actually dreading it. And I don't really know why,
- 7:13Speaker 1: because the minute that we found out, I just I
- 7:17Speaker 1: nearly burst into tears. I can't tell you how absolutely
- 7:21Speaker 1: overwhelmingly thrilled and delighted I am to know that we're
- 7:25Speaker 1: going to be grandparents and to know that we're going
- 7:28Speaker 1: to have this little baby in our home again, that
- 7:30Speaker 1: we get to huggle and squeeze and love like crazy.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I'm just so indescribably thrilled to find out. Even if
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm a bit younger than I wanted.
- 7:40Speaker 2: To be, Well, you are being sheltered a little bit
- 7:43Speaker 2: because since Chanell found out that she was pregnant. I
- 7:47Speaker 2: have had text messages at two am this morning. I
- 7:51Speaker 2: have had five am phone calls. She has been on
- 7:54Speaker 2: my doorstep at any given moment. I get photos of
- 7:58Speaker 2: everything she's eating. I get students about why her Pooh
- 8:01Speaker 2: looks a certain way like I I hear it all.
- 8:07Speaker 2: But what is so delightful is that she wants me
- 8:11Speaker 2: to be a part of that space. She wants to
- 8:13Speaker 2: share all of those moments, all of the changes that
- 8:17Speaker 2: she's experiencing. And for anyone who's been pregnant, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 2: like it happens in some ways so quickly, and yet
- 8:24Speaker 2: a conversation just the other day, she's like, Mom, I
- 8:26Speaker 2: feel like I have been pregnant forever.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's been like three and a half months forever. Look,
- 8:34Speaker 1: I can't laugh. I'm the guy. I've never had to
- 8:35Speaker 1: worry about this. It's a girl thing. So how are
- 8:38Speaker 1: you feeling about it?
- 8:40Speaker 2: I think what I'm most excited about is that Jared
- 8:44Speaker 2: and Chanell's relationship has just blossomed and grown, and there
- 8:48Speaker 2: is just so much solidarity in their love for each
- 8:54Speaker 2: other and their desire to kind of move forward in
- 8:57Speaker 2: their family, and that excite me. I'm kind of in awe.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Of being old enough to be a grandma, no.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Having the privilege of having a front row seat as
- 9:11Speaker 2: this family grows, and to watch them just love each other.
- 9:17Speaker 2: That's what I'm so excited about, is just watching that love.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I just had a thought that I've not had until
- 9:23Speaker 1: right this moment. We have six kids, six daughters. How
- 9:26Speaker 1: many grandkids do you reckon we're going to end up with?
- 9:28Speaker 1: I have no idea, Like we've got the potential to
- 9:31Speaker 1: end up being responsible for the global population problems, right
- 9:35Speaker 1: like that?
- 9:36Speaker 2: Well, we put this in context because Shanell and Jarrett
- 9:40Speaker 2: have been around us for a long time now, and
- 9:42Speaker 2: it actually probably has been a little bit of a
- 9:45Speaker 2: birth control.
- 9:46Speaker 1: With all the kids driving everyone crazy. Clearly it didn't
- 9:50Speaker 1: work well enough. What are you most excited about?
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think I'm just most excited that she wants to
- 9:59Speaker 2: include me in the process and that I actually get
- 10:03Speaker 2: to just be with her side by side. In so
- 10:06Speaker 2: many ways, it feels like reliving some of my own experiences,
- 10:12Speaker 2: and yet it's an out of body experience because it's
- 10:15Speaker 2: not mine, it's hers, and it's different. And being able
- 10:19Speaker 2: to share with her some of the really hard learned
- 10:23Speaker 2: lessons that I learned way too late and desperately want
- 10:28Speaker 2: her to learn now and take care of herself and
- 10:35Speaker 2: nurture and support herself and be able to ask for
- 10:41Speaker 2: what she needs because it was something that I really
- 10:44Speaker 2: struggled with as a young mum.
- 10:47Speaker 1: What do you think would be the hardest thing.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Watching her hurt?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Watching watching watching her go through the hard because while
- 10:55Speaker 2: there's so much beautiful, there is so much hard And
- 10:59Speaker 2: knowing that while I can support her, the reality is
- 11:03Speaker 2: she actually has to go through that hard.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah. But you know what, that's where you grow, That's
- 11:08Speaker 1: the good stuff. That's why you're who you are because
- 11:10Speaker 1: of the hard stuff That you've been through anyway, that's arounsdment.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You know what I'm most nervous about the thing that
- 11:15Speaker 1: I think is going to be the hardest. I reckon
- 11:18Speaker 1: you can guess what is going to be the hardest
- 11:19Speaker 1: for me. You're not going to guess. I thought you'd
- 11:21Speaker 1: be able to guess that one.
- 11:22Speaker 2: No, I'm more scared of penises. To be honest, I
- 11:29Speaker 2: haven't had to change one of those nappies.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Well, what I'm most worried about is that I'm going
- 11:35Speaker 1: to want to try to be the parenting expert, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: we're going to have a son in law or a
- 11:39Speaker 1: daughter who looks at us and says, would you just
- 11:41Speaker 1: stop telling us how to do it and let us
- 11:42Speaker 1: figure it out for ourselves. And yet I feel like
- 11:45Speaker 1: there's so much at stake, and there's that opportunity to say, hey,
- 11:48Speaker 1: we've been there, and I've got a book about that. Oh,
- 11:51Speaker 1: I've got a book about that as well, and look,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I've got a book about this. I think that's going
- 11:55Speaker 1: to be the hardest thing. I hope I hope that
- 11:57Speaker 1: our relationships such that they're inclined to and talk with
- 12:01Speaker 1: us about things, because it's going to be really hard
- 12:03Speaker 1: for him to buy my tongue. I'm just saying, it's
- 12:05Speaker 1: really gonna be a tough one. Glad to put it
- 12:07Speaker 1: out there in my tongue, get bitten off. It's a
- 12:11Speaker 1: happy day for us, and we're so grateful to be
- 12:13Speaker 1: able to share it with you. We hope that you
- 12:14Speaker 1: don't mind this moment of self indulgence on The Happy
- 12:17Speaker 1: Family's podcast. But we're going to be grandparents. What are
- 12:20Speaker 1: you going to be called? Do you know what the
- 12:22Speaker 1: grandchild will be calling you?
- 12:24Speaker 2: Well, I know what they're calling you.
- 12:25Speaker 1: What are they calling me? You're Papa and Papa, Yes,
- 12:29Speaker 1: Papa as really Papa.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Chanelle as a young girl, used to call you Papa smurf.
- 12:35Speaker 2: She did know how it ever starts you are still
- 12:38Speaker 2: Papa Smurf in her phone.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So I'm going to be really, you are right, So
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'm going to be papa.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So you're going to be Papa, and I think does something.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You'll be Nona, No, don't. We don't have Italian heritage here.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Our kids' grandparents are nanny and Poppy.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Nana pop yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And I grew up with a papa and a nana,
- 12:58Speaker 2: But I don't just I don't feel like any of
- 13:00Speaker 2: those spit me and I'm not granny.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Well, I was about to say, that's all we got
- 13:03Speaker 1: time for grandma.
- 13:05Speaker 2: So I think I'm going to be mama.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Mama, yeah, mamma, mamma.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Okay, so you're going to be papa and I think
- 13:13Speaker 2: I'm going to be mamma.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Well, we'll find out as things progress. Now, we just
- 13:17Speaker 1: hope and pray and cross everything that the pregnancy progresses
- 13:21Speaker 1: well and that we are fortunate enough to have a
- 13:24Speaker 1: healthy baby add to our family. Soon it'll be the
- 13:27Speaker 1: Happy Families podcast with me doctor Justin Coulson and you
- 13:30Speaker 1: missus Happy Families. The moment who our six kids and
- 13:33Speaker 1: grandparent to one? How exciting? Thanks so much for listening.
