- 0:00Speaker 1: From our archives, the Billy Graham classics.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I want you to turn with me for the last
- 0:10Speaker 2: sermon to the third chapter of Second Peter. The third
- 0:17Speaker 2: chapter of Second Peter. I want to speak tonight on
- 0:22Speaker 2: the subject the signs of the time, the end of
- 0:27Speaker 2: the world, the second coming of Jesus Christ. And I
- 0:33Speaker 2: want you to turn with me to the third chapter,
- 0:37Speaker 2: beginning at verse three of Second Peter. Knowing this first,
- 0:45Speaker 2: that there shall come in the last days. Now, notice
- 0:50Speaker 2: that expression the last days. You'll find it many times
- 0:54Speaker 2: in the Bible. The Bible says that there is going
- 0:58Speaker 2: to be an X point in history that will be
- 1:01Speaker 2: known as the latter days or the last days. Many
- 1:07Speaker 2: people think that we're in that period. Now, nobody knows
- 1:13Speaker 2: for sure. The Bible warns us against speculating on times
- 1:17Speaker 2: and seasons and dates. But there is a period of
- 1:21Speaker 2: time taught in the Bible that is called the last days.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And then the next word is scuffers. Scuffers will come
- 1:31Speaker 2: in the last days.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Cynics.
- 1:35Speaker 2: People will say, oh, yeah, God is dead. We can't
- 1:38Speaker 2: find God anywhere. We took a trip up in space.
- 1:41Speaker 2: We didn't meet God, we didn't meet the angels. While
- 1:43Speaker 2: we weren't there, and there are going to be other
- 1:47Speaker 2: scuffers that will scoff at the idea of future judgment,
- 1:51Speaker 2: scoff at the idea that Jesus Christ is coming back
- 1:54Speaker 2: to this earth again.
- 1:55Speaker 3: They'll laugh at the whole idea.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Why tells us walking after their own lust? They don't
- 2:05Speaker 2: want Christ to come. They don't want Christ to come.
- 2:09Speaker 3: And interfere with their way of living.
- 2:12Speaker 2: They love their they love their sins so much that
- 2:17Speaker 2: they don't want Christ coming, and they cannot accept the
- 2:20Speaker 2: idea that God is a god of judgment. Now we
- 2:25Speaker 2: know that God is a God of love, We know
- 2:29Speaker 2: that God is a God of mercy, but the Bible
- 2:32Speaker 2: also teaches that God is a god of wrath. He's
- 2:36Speaker 2: a god of anger. Now that's not an emotional anger
- 2:41Speaker 2: like you and I have. That's an eternal anger at evil.
- 2:44Speaker 2: A righteous indignation that Jesus had when he went into
- 2:48Speaker 2: the temple and drove out the money changes the righteous
- 2:51Speaker 2: indignation that he had when he turned on the Pharisees
- 2:54Speaker 2: and called them all kinds of names in the twenty
- 2:56Speaker 2: third chapter of Matthew. Primarily he accused them of being hypocrites,
- 3:04Speaker 2: scoffers walking after their own loss. And then the scripture says,
- 3:11Speaker 2: for this they willingly are ignorant of that by the
- 3:15Speaker 2: word of God, the heavens were of old, and the
- 3:18Speaker 2: earth standing out of the water and in the water,
- 3:21Speaker 2: whereby the world that then was being overflowed with water perished.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But the heavens and the earth, which are now right now,
- 3:33Speaker 2: by the same word, are kept in store, reserved unto fire,
- 3:42Speaker 2: against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
- 3:48Speaker 2: But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that
- 3:51Speaker 2: one day is with the Lord a thousand years, and
- 3:53Speaker 2: a thousand years is one day. The Lord is not
- 3:57Speaker 2: slack concerning his promise, as some men count slacklys, but
- 4:01Speaker 2: is long suffering to us, not willing that any should perish,
- 4:06Speaker 2: but that all should come to repentance. But remember this,
- 4:11Speaker 2: that day of the Lord is going to come like
- 4:13Speaker 2: a thief in the night, in which the heavens will
- 4:16Speaker 2: pass away with a great noise, and the elements will
- 4:19Speaker 2: melt with fervent heat, and the earth also, and the
- 4:22Speaker 2: works that are therein shall be burned up. Now in
- 4:29Speaker 2: this passage of scripture, the apostle Peter under the inspiration
- 4:33Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit, is underlining something that is taught
- 4:36Speaker 2: from Genesis to Revelation, that a day of judgment is
- 4:41Speaker 2: going to come, that the world is going to have
- 4:45Speaker 2: to stand someday.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Before the judgment of God.
- 4:48Speaker 2: You will stand there as an individual, We'll stand there
- 4:51Speaker 2: as a nation, We'll stand there as a society to
- 4:54Speaker 2: give an account of our stewardship.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Here the Bible teaches.
- 5:03Speaker 2: That toward the end of the age, as we move
- 5:07Speaker 2: toward the end, it will be a time of peril, war, destruction, lawlessness,
- 5:16Speaker 2: immorality so great that God will have to intervene and
- 5:22Speaker 2: stop the whole thing, or we would have racial genocide. Now,
- 5:27Speaker 2: listen to what Jesus said, Listen to what.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The scripture says. Far there shall be Jesus said this
- 5:34Speaker 3: in the twenty fourth of Matthew.
- 5:35Speaker 2: For there shall be great tribulation such as was not
- 5:40Speaker 2: since the beginning of the world to this time, nor
- 5:44Speaker 2: will ever be again. And except those days should be shortened,
- 5:51Speaker 2: there should be no flesh saved. But for the sake
- 5:55Speaker 2: of the elect those days will be shortened.
- 6:00Speaker 3: God says, I'm.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Not going to let the human race blow up in
- 6:04Speaker 2: an atomic war. I'm going to stop it and I'm
- 6:07Speaker 2: going to save for the elect say, that's why it's
- 6:11Speaker 2: so important for believers, even though we're a small minority,
- 6:15Speaker 2: for our sake, the human race will be saved. For
- 6:19Speaker 2: the sake of that small believing remnant and minority that
- 6:24Speaker 2: believe the human race will be saved. That's what the
- 6:28Speaker 2: scripture says. Now, you don't have to believe that. I'm
- 6:31Speaker 2: just quoting Jesus.
- 6:33Speaker 3: That's what Jesus said.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And those are passages you don't hear much preaching about.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And you know the preachers today of judgment and armageddon
- 6:44Speaker 2: are the scientist Our scientists to doing the preaching. We're
- 6:50Speaker 2: in the pulpit of silent on the subject, and the
- 6:53Speaker 2: Bible is filled with it. We ought to be teaching
- 6:56Speaker 2: the people and preaching to the people, warning the people,
- 7:00Speaker 2: showing the people the.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Way of salvation.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Now, in the midst of that generation of that day,
- 7:07Speaker 2: there lived a man who believed in God. He walked
- 7:12Speaker 2: with God. God said, the thing has become so bad
- 7:16Speaker 2: and so decadent and so violent.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I'm going to.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Destroy the human race and I'm going.
- 7:21Speaker 3: To start over again.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Because you see, when God created man He gave him
- 7:27Speaker 2: a gift he didn't give to his other creatures. He
- 7:29Speaker 2: created man in his image and gave him freedom of choice.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Man took this freedom and it became license. He went
- 7:36Speaker 2: his own way, rebelled against God, began to live his
- 7:39Speaker 2: own life. And God said, if you rebel against me,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you're going to die. Man has been suffering and dying
- 7:45Speaker 2: ever since. It's now appointed under man wants to die.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And after that the judgment because of our rebellion, sin
- 7:52Speaker 2: is rebellion against God.
- 7:54Speaker 3: We're all rebels. The Bible says, all.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
- 8:02Speaker 2: We're all under the sentence of death. We're all under
- 8:06Speaker 2: God's sentence. The wages of sin is death. But in
- 8:09Speaker 2: the midst of the generation of that day, there lived
- 8:12Speaker 2: a man, one man that believed in God.
- 8:17Speaker 3: His name was Noah.
- 8:20Speaker 2: We've got some people today that believe in God. There
- 8:25Speaker 2: are people all over this world, in every country and
- 8:28Speaker 2: every city of the world, from Moscow to Peking that
- 8:32Speaker 2: believe in God. They may have to do it secretly,
- 8:34Speaker 2: but they believe. When Miss Stalin came to this country,
- 8:40Speaker 2: the daughter of Joseph Stalin, she had been ard in
- 8:43Speaker 2: intellectual atheism.
- 8:45Speaker 3: She said, I.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Could no longer live in a world in which there
- 8:48Speaker 2: was no God. And she said, all through the Soviet
- 8:51Speaker 2: Union there are believers, she said, even in the Communist Party,
- 8:56Speaker 2: there are believers. You see, there are people who may
- 9:01Speaker 2: declare their atheism, but down inside.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Have a secret faith and a secret belief that God is.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Noah believed in God in the midst of that crooked.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And perverse generation. And he dared to stand alone.
- 9:20Speaker 2: He dared to stand up and say I believe in
- 9:23Speaker 2: a period when the whole trend was.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Against any faith at all.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And I want to tell you to stand up at
- 9:30Speaker 2: one of our modern universities today and say I believe
- 9:33Speaker 2: in God, and lift up a Bible and say I
- 9:36Speaker 2: believe this book to be the inspired word of God.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Takes a lot of courage. And there's a many a.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Professor that leads a lonely life on campus, a Christian professor.
- 9:46Speaker 2: There's a many a student in a class that it
- 9:49Speaker 2: leads a lonely life because he believes in Christ and
- 9:52Speaker 2: he believes in God, and he believes in the Bible.
- 9:54Speaker 3: But they're there.
- 9:56Speaker 2: God has his people scattered all over the world, and
- 10:00Speaker 2: a crusade like this brings a lot of them together,
- 10:04Speaker 2: and a lot of you are going to go back,
- 10:05Speaker 2: and you're going to have to fight a thousand battles
- 10:08Speaker 2: with yourself and with others.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He dared to stand alone.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And that's what Jesus meant when he said, take up
- 10:16Speaker 2: the cross and follow me, bear my reproach. Be willing
- 10:20Speaker 2: to go outside the camp with me and live where
- 10:23Speaker 2: it's unpopular.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Are you willing to do that? He said, count the.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Cost you may have to stand alone. Noah stood alone, and.
- 10:37Speaker 3: God came to him one day and God said, Noah.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I'm going to destroy the human race with a flood.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm going to cause it to rain forty days and
- 10:44Speaker 2: forty nights, and I want you to build a ship
- 10:48Speaker 2: and save your household and save the animals.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And the Bible says that Noah believed God.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Noah didn't argue with God and say, well, Lord, there's
- 10:59Speaker 2: no scientific eva evidence that any flood's coming. I haven't
- 11:03Speaker 2: heard Walter Cronkite mention it on news yet. I haven't
- 11:09Speaker 2: heard any scientist say anything about it at Columbia or Stanford.
- 11:14Speaker 2: The Bible says, by faith nor being warned of God,
- 11:18Speaker 2: of things not seen as yet, no.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Evidence as yet, not seen as yet. Moved with fear.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Notice what moved him. Fear prepared the art.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Now, if ever a generation had a right to be
- 11:41Speaker 2: moved by fear and get right with God, it's our generation.
- 11:45Speaker 2: The headlines are screaming it to us. They're preaching to
- 11:48Speaker 2: us every day, the newspaper editors.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Who was it, I think it.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Was Chief Justice Warren who said he always turns to
- 11:56Speaker 2: the sports section first to read it to see what
- 11:59Speaker 2: man is accomplished, and then he turns to the front
- 12:01Speaker 2: page to see man's failures.
- 12:04Speaker 3: And there's a lot of truth in that.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And God said, no, I want you to build this
- 12:10Speaker 2: ship four hundred and fifty feet long and forty five
- 12:12Speaker 2: feet wide high and seventy five feet high, three stories,
- 12:16Speaker 2: one window, one side door, and I want you to
- 12:19Speaker 2: get it ready as quick as you can. And so
- 12:23Speaker 2: nor began to build. And the people laughed and sneered
- 12:27Speaker 2: and thought he was gone mad. But of course he
- 12:29Speaker 2: paid top wages, and they worked for him.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And helped him, but they laughed at him.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And during all that period of time that they were
- 12:39Speaker 2: building this ship, it took one hundred and twenty.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Years to build that ship.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Noah was preaching, warning the people repent, judgment is coming. Believe,
- 12:51Speaker 2: but they laughed and sneered and did not believe. Now
- 12:58Speaker 2: during that period of time, God could have sent the judgment.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Earlier, but he didn't do it.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And God had a secret that you can go back
- 13:08Speaker 2: home and figure out the oldest man that ever lived
- 13:13Speaker 2: with six or nine hundred and sixty nine years?
- 13:15Speaker 3: Now, why was he the oldest man that ever lived?
- 13:17Speaker 3: In Methusela. Have you ever thought about that his name means?
- 13:23Speaker 3: Do you know what his name means?
- 13:26Speaker 2: When he is dead, it shall be sent, That's what
- 13:28Speaker 2: his name means. As long as Methuselah lived, God was
- 13:35Speaker 2: not going to send that flood. The day that matthuselahd died,
- 13:40Speaker 2: the flood came. God used him as a symbol of
- 13:44Speaker 2: his love and his grace and his mercy and his
- 13:47Speaker 2: long suffering, hoping that mankind would repent their sins and
- 13:51Speaker 2: turn to him before.
- 13:52Speaker 3: It's too late. And Metthuselah just kept on living.
- 13:57Speaker 2: God's patience, God's love, and Methuselah stands forever in the
- 14:04Speaker 2: Bible as an illustration of the love and the mercy
- 14:08Speaker 2: and the grace of God.
- 14:12Speaker 3: God could have judged them.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Years earlier, but he didn't do it. Methuselah kept on living,
- 14:18Speaker 2: and the day he died the flood came. Now, what
- 14:23Speaker 2: is God using in our generation?
- 14:25Speaker 3: All right?
- 14:26Speaker 2: You can read it second Thessalonians two six and seven.
- 14:30Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is God's restraining power
- 14:37Speaker 2: in our world. And as long as the Holy Spirit
- 14:41Speaker 2: is here in mighty.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Power, working as we've seen.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Him in this garden, God is going to be long
- 14:48Speaker 2: suffering and merciful, not willing, not desiring that any should
- 14:51Speaker 2: be lost, but that all should be saved. We're living
- 14:55Speaker 2: in a period of God's mercy. We're breathing and living
- 14:59Speaker 2: by the mercy and the grace of God. The Holy
- 15:05Speaker 2: Spirit is God's mighty restraining power. But I know some
- 15:11Speaker 2: theologians that are beginning to say that the Holy Spirit,
- 15:17Speaker 2: in his common and restraining grace throughout the world, may
- 15:20Speaker 2: be in the process of being removed. The Holy Spirit's
- 15:26Speaker 2: activity in bringing individuals to Christ is accelerating because people
- 15:30Speaker 2: are being converted all over the world to Christ. Because
- 15:33Speaker 2: the Bible says, as we move toward the end of history,
- 15:37Speaker 2: that gospel preaching will increase, and the gospel will have
- 15:40Speaker 2: been heard around the world today for the first time,
- 15:43Speaker 2: it's heard around the world by radio and television.
- 15:46Speaker 3: In the printed page.
- 15:51Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit is God's restraining power, and the moment
- 15:56Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit is removed, this earth is going to
- 15:59Speaker 2: turn into almost hell. And the Bible says that Christ
- 16:12Speaker 2: is going to come back. You want to read about
- 16:17Speaker 2: when he comes, I'll read it to you. There are
- 16:20Speaker 2: so many passages in the Bible that deal with the
- 16:23Speaker 2: coming again of Christ that it's almost impossible. The nineteenth
- 16:27Speaker 2: chapter of Revelation. Listen to this, beginning at verse eleven,
- 16:31Speaker 2: and I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse.
- 16:35Speaker 2: And he that sat upon him was called faithful and true,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His
- 16:43Speaker 2: eyes wears a flame of fire, and on his head
- 16:46Speaker 2: were many crowns. And he had a name written that
- 16:49Speaker 2: no man knew but he himself. And he was clothed
- 16:52Speaker 2: with a vesture dipped in blood. And his name is
- 16:55Speaker 2: called the Word of God. And the armies which were
- 16:58Speaker 2: in heaven follow him on white horses, clothed in fine linen,
- 17:02Speaker 2: white and clean and out of his mouth goeth a
- 17:05Speaker 2: sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations,
- 17:08Speaker 2: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron.
- 17:11Speaker 3: And he treadeth the.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Wine press of the fierceness and the wrath of Almighty God.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And he hath on his vestia and on his thigh
- 17:19Speaker 2: a name written.
- 17:20Speaker 3: King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Yes, he's coming back.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Next time, not as the little baby of Bethlehem, but
- 17:30Speaker 2: he's the mighty King of.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Kings and Lord of lords.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And he himself said he's coming back to intervene in
- 17:38Speaker 2: history to save the world from destroying itself, because God
- 17:42Speaker 2: loves the world. And then the scripture says something else.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It says it purifies you.
- 17:52Speaker 2: In other words, this is a part of our sanctification,
- 17:57Speaker 2: growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ. Hope that
- 17:59Speaker 2: Christ is coming back again, our hope send it in that.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Should cause us.
- 18:06Speaker 2: To live pure lives, obedient lives. And then the scripture
- 18:13Speaker 2: says that we should watch. That's what we're doing tonight.
- 18:16Speaker 2: We're watching. And you know, I've gotten in the habit
- 18:20Speaker 2: of going to bed at night and thinking, just before
- 18:24Speaker 2: I go to bed, what if he should come tonight?
- 18:28Speaker 2: I wake up in the morning. And in the morning
- 18:30Speaker 2: one of the first thoughts I have, I wonder if
- 18:32Speaker 2: he's going to come today.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Oh, I'd like to see him come. What a day
- 18:38Speaker 3: that's going to be.
- 18:40Speaker 2: All of our aches and pains are going to be
- 18:42Speaker 2: behind us, all of our tears are going to be
- 18:43Speaker 2: behind us, all of our problems are going to be solved.
- 18:47Speaker 2: What a day that's going to be.
- 18:49Speaker 3: And Jesus is going to rule.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And the problems, the social problems that we're wrestling with
- 18:55Speaker 2: and battling with now, trying to patch them up and
- 18:58Speaker 2: solve them as best we can, They're all going to
- 19:01Speaker 2: be totally solved. The race problem will be solved, the
- 19:08Speaker 2: poverty problem will be solved, the war problem will be solved.
- 19:12Speaker 3: There'll be no more wars.
- 19:16Speaker 2: What a day that's going to be when we stand
- 19:19Speaker 2: with him in eternity.
- 19:24Speaker 3: And then Jesus said, prepare are you.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Prepared for that day? Does Christ live in your heart?
- 19:32Speaker 2: Are you prepared for the day of judgment? Are you prepared?
- 19:34Speaker 3: Should Christ come tonight?
- 19:38Speaker 2: The scripture says, prepare to meet Thy God? How do
- 19:41Speaker 2: you prepare? You prepare first of all by being certain
- 19:45Speaker 2: that you know Christ is your Savior by repenting of
- 19:49Speaker 2: your sin. Now, what does repentance mean. It means that
- 19:53Speaker 2: you're willing to say, God, I've sinned. I'm willing to
- 19:56Speaker 2: give up my sins. I'm willing to change my.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Way of living. That's repentance.
- 20:02Speaker 2: And secondly, by faith, you receive Christ as your savior.
- 20:06Speaker 2: You're not trusting in your good works. You're not trusting
- 20:09Speaker 2: in anything except Jesus Christ and what He did at
- 20:12Speaker 2: the Cross for your salvation, nothing else. When I get
- 20:19Speaker 2: to the entrance to Heaven and they ask me the password,
- 20:22Speaker 2: I'm not going to say big crowds at Madison Square Garden.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Lord Lord, I read the Bible through. I won't say
- 20:27Speaker 2: any of that. I'm going to say nothing but the Blood.
- 20:39Speaker 2: I'm going to Heaven totally and completely on the basis
- 20:43Speaker 2: of what Christ did on that cross. Salvation is not
- 20:47Speaker 2: by works. It's by the grace of God that God
- 20:50Speaker 2: offers to us. And you must receive by faith and believe,
- 20:56Speaker 2: and then you must be willing to follow Him and
- 20:59Speaker 2: serve Here. It means that you start living a disciplined
- 21:03Speaker 2: life under the lordship of Christ.
- 21:06Speaker 3: It means that you serve Him.
- 21:09Speaker 2: In every little thing, every day you say, God's keeping
- 21:11Speaker 2: books on you. He's got a computer system all of.
- 21:15Speaker 3: His own, and he sees the little things. Nobody ever
- 21:19Speaker 3: praises you for.
- 21:21Speaker 2: How many of you do things that are really good
- 21:24Speaker 2: things and nobody ever sees it. Nobody ever praises you,
- 21:27Speaker 2: and you'd like to have a little praise.
