- 1:18The Crime Club. There were a couple of imprints, one by Collins,
- 1:23one by a Double Day called The Crime Club. This particular program that we're
- 1:29going to play was based on The Double Day a Crime Club, and these
- 1:34were basically every week there would be a new mystery release, so you could
- 1:38go down and pick up pick up your copy to enjoy some quality detective fiction
- 1:48and the book the stories in the Crime Club are based on are based on
- 1:53these books, and this series aired over the mutual work in kind of the
- 2:01same, adjacent to the case book of gragory Hood, which we'll play later
- 2:07on this year. We have the first broadcast of the series and it definitely
- 2:14takes that book club approach as you're about to see. So we're going to

- 2:25we do get started, though, I do want to let you know that
- 2:28I've added my own little addition to the world of crime fiction. Published a
- 2:34short novel that in title is an ounce of Prevention by Adam Graham. You
- 2:39can get that on the kindle. All right, Well, that little plug
- 2:44out of the way here now is today's story. The title is Death Blew
- 2:50Out the Match. Bye, you're here. Good. Take the easy chair
- 3:15for the window. Comfortable. Good. The book is on the shell,
- 3:25Yes, sir, it is Death Blew Out the Match, A very absorbing
- 3:30story of death and mystery on a small island. Let's look at it under
- 3:35the reading lamp. It was an evening early in May, and the waters
- 3:39around the cape just off the coast of Massachusetts were buried under a fog as
- 3:44thick and as massive as any you'd want to see. Moving cautiously, a
- 3:49small boat makes its way slowly toward one of the islands off the cape.
- 3:53In the boat there, Elisa Mucumber and Anne Waldron, Well, this is
- 4:00something. I'm glad we're almost there. If he's scared, Miss Walden,
- 4:04We're not scared, Elisha. But if I hadn't done into you and your
- 4:08bedrod out of sense and out there not even knowing himself, could have persuaded
- 4:13me to take a boat ride in this bog. What's you on the island?
- 4:15Oh, not as much, unless you're counting a mysterious stranger. Mysterious
- 4:21calls himself David Hyland gets mailed from New York, Washington, Boston, but
- 4:27new every day. Nobody knows what's in it. You don't talk. Maybe
- 4:31he's an ex sale or with a sweetheart in every report. This could be
- 4:35when I'm chairman of the Board of Selectman and it's my duty to keep the
- 4:39peace on that island. You've always managed, Eliza, What else is new?
- 4:44Leonard Case is there too? Leonard? Yeah? All weeks now?
- 4:49Then Mara, then Rick must be there. I guess mister Case will be
- 4:54mighty glad to see you, Miss Walden. Par should he be glad?
- 4:58I reckon the feller gets pretty longch with a plaid cast on each day castor
- 5:02cast got both his legs broken and automobile action a few months ago. I
- 5:08figured you might know about it. No, No, I didn't know,
- 5:14Elijah. Are you sure Mara isn't on the alumn? You're still sweet on
- 5:19the fella. He doesn't mean a thing to me. Maybe not for summer
- 5:25last year when mister Case turned from you to that van wickwoman. Isn't the
- 5:29yep? I was mighty glad the season ended without the killing. Thanks very
- 5:44much, Elisha. I'll go the rest of the way alone. I don't
- 5:46mind taking your door, Miss Walden, you don't have to. I'll just
- 5:50follow this path around marvin with house. That'll take me right home. Good
- 5:54not Elisa, and thanks for everything. Good night, Miss Walden. Be
- 5:59careful. Maybe I should have. Oh well, nothing ever happens to you?
- 6:06M h mars house and it's whose tight? Someone something fancy meeting you
- 6:27here? Who are you? What do you want? You sound like a
- 6:30native because I answer your first question first? Who am I? David?
- 6:35Why don't you call me, David, and I can call you. And
- 6:43your house is about two hundred feet from here, isn't it? Yes,
- 6:46you expect to live there alone? What business is it of yours? You
- 6:51won't tell anyone that you met me tonight, will you? That's what I
- 6:56said, because if you do, one of us will come very use.
- 7:09Hey, mister Case, is the dame here to see you? Okay,
- 7:15Tete, help yourself to the board. Don't make him nervous. He's in
- 7:18a very delicate condition. Like I'm still glad to see you. Look beautiful,
- 7:28beautiful the case? Is it all right if I take the car and
- 7:30go for a driving to town? Yeah, speat it to any place.
- 7:32I'll pick up some chow for the icebox when i'm there. You got a
- 7:36couple of preferences, maybe why anything you like, but for pezza, Okay,
- 7:43don't look the surprise. Then the guys saved my life from me out
- 7:46of the record of the car and up been plane hanging. If he doesn't
- 7:48turn out to be the best cooking. But letther side of the Atlantic,
- 7:55I was hoping you'd come in. You were What do you mean? I
- 7:59knew you were on me. I saw you from here Leonard, what have
- 8:07you done to this role? I have these walls ripped out in the glass
- 8:11put in their place. Ah, it was a trick. Simply looked through
- 8:15this telescope in the island as I see Leonard and mar coming. She isn't
- 8:22too busy in your y. The fact is Maria and I are washed up,
- 8:26so isn't it? Is it? The crazy thing about it is that
- 8:30I really thought I loved it. It must have been out of my mind.
- 8:35Did you marry her? Wasn't that crazy? Put that? I want
- 8:46you to meet Mabel. My little health made and Sam's away. Mabel does
- 8:50a little odd job to make me comfortable. Watch. Oh my, oh,
- 8:58you're slipping a girl. If I got my to back upout, thank
- 9:05you. Ali. You may go out and get your lunch, and don't
- 9:09pick up anyone's got kitty? Say why did you pick that up? Everyone
- 9:18to his days. I don't think up. What's that on your bed?
- 9:24I has a buckle off a woman's shoe. What do you know? Think
- 9:28that bird will bring home with her? Wit a minute live? I've seen
- 9:33this buckle before, haven't you. I don't remember that's marsh Are you talking
- 9:39about mars in New York. We'll soon find a given that's how it's going.
- 9:46Hello, Yes, yes, she's here. Would you like to talk
- 9:48to her? Uh? Huh? What good? Heaven? Of course I'll
- 9:54tell her right away and you can stop. What is it? Lena's here
- 10:03on the island. Lysi Maccomba just phoned. He wants you to go over
- 10:07to her house. She's been murdered. Elijah, Oh, miss Waldon,
- 10:20you got here pretty quick, didn't you. I can't believe it did.
- 10:26When did it happen? Sometime last night? Last night? The corner says
- 10:30it much took place between eleven and twelve. That's impossible. Why it was
- 10:37close to twelve? One hour? Elevel? I took the path that runs
- 10:39around this place. The house was locked up. Did you look to see?
- 10:43No that there was no reason for me to look. You yourself told
- 10:48me Mara wasn't on the island. I reckon, I was wrong, Miss
- 10:50Walden, Miss van Wick must be got here while I was a new bed
- 10:54for and that must have been it. What was that, Miss Warman?
- 10:58The door? As I was passing by here last night, I heard the
- 11:03door open and closed twice. Of course she didn't see anyone, did you.
- 11:07As a matter of fact, I didn't too bad. Would you like
- 11:11to see the body? Must I? It can't hurt you. It's right
- 11:16there in the living room. Come along there she is just like I found
- 11:26there. Okay, head's almost in the fireplace. Yep. She's just about
- 11:31to light the fire with that match when death blew it out. Is that
- 11:37the idea of what killed him? I thought you might have it was cyanide
- 11:43to patassium. Oh awful? Uh huh. But the one thing that puzzles
- 11:48me, miss Waldron, how did the killer get her to take it?
- 11:52All right? I don't know, Sha. There ain't a sign of a
- 11:56struggle in the room, and there ain't a mark on her shina. It
- 12:01works like like that means she was killed right here in this room. But
- 12:05Elisha, you keep talking about murder. How do you know it wasn't suicide?
- 12:09Of course, I never seen a corpse get up. I supposedly evidence.
- 12:13Maybe she cheated? Uh how would you be known about that, be
- 12:18Walter? That piece of gum near the fireplace, I guess I must be
- 12:22slipping. I will see what the coroner had to say about this gum.
- 12:28It wants suicide, Elisha, I'm sure, why ask Lenny? He can
- 12:31give you all that I'm asking, Hugh Swalk, I don't know them now?
- 12:35Why did you send for me? I wanted to hear what you had
- 12:39to say in the presence of the corpse. But what I mean to my
- 12:43way of thinking, Miss van Wick was murdered and I thought maybe I ought
- 12:46to have a talk the one person that had both motive and opportunity. That's
- 12:52Humeswalk. Well, you're trying to break down the door. I must you,
- 13:07mister Harland, all right? Would you like to look at me here?
- 13:09Or would you rather come in? I'll come in, sit down?
- 13:13No thanks, mister Harland. What were you doing out in the fog last
- 13:16night? You won't call me David Water? Will you answer my question?
- 13:20Please? Sure? What were you doing out in the fog last night?
- 13:24I was going home? That makes us even, doesn't it? Not quite
- 13:26Mayra than wicked and murdered? You don't say on this quiet, peaceful island.
- 13:35Did you tell anyone you met me? No? Good? It's always
- 13:41play it smart, But I will mister Hyland. Will would you like to
- 13:45hang for the murder of Mina van Wick? Suppose I told her license I
- 13:48saw you coming out of her house last night. But I do you know
- 13:52I didn't. I didn't go in after I left you, I went right
- 13:54home. Do you prove it? No? Look here, mister Hyland,
- 13:58what are you to do? I don't want you to make any mistakes.
- 14:03You'll protect me and I'll protect you. You killed Myra, don't point miss
- 14:07Waldon. It's bad masters. Why did you do it? All right?
- 14:11I'm going to find out, mister Island and what you came to the s
- 14:15Island boss. And when I do, yes, that that letter armor desk,
- 14:22that's Myra's handwriting on the office. Put it down, nail from New
- 14:24York. Yes, didn't have to break my arm. I'm sorry. It's
- 14:31such a pretty arm too. And that's such a pretty neck. What what
- 14:35are you going to do? Nothing? If you say one word about this
- 14:39letter to anyone, I'm going to put a rope around that neck for keeps,
- 14:50Leonard? What am I going to do? Lots of things? I
- 14:54killed Myra and I can't prove that I didn't. I know you didn't,
- 14:58No matter what you killed Myra. Oh, Elisha was here. I told
- 15:01him that she wanted to marry me, but well I couldn't do it.
- 15:05And she loved you. I'm afraid, sir Leonard, it's possible, didn't
- 15:11it? Mara committed suicide? Now, just before you came in, elijahs
- 15:16phoned me. That piece of gum you've found, there was no poison in
- 15:20it. Oh, don't don't worry, darling. We'll find a way to
- 15:22get you out of it. But Leonard, who left that gum there?
- 15:26Killing? Nor doubt? Listen, man, what about David Hyland? Who?
- 15:31Don't pretend you don't know him. I saw you within a little while
- 15:33ago. You saw me this telescope? Why did you go to his house?
- 15:39All right? Then maybe you can tell me what you and he were
- 15:43wrestling over. It was a letter, wasn't it, Leonard? Please don't
- 15:46ask him, wasn't I? Yes, from Myra, Myra. But what's
- 15:52he got to do with him? I don't know, but I'll promise you
- 15:54won't tell anyone, Leonard, your promise, that's all all right? So
- 16:02we've got to know what was in that letter? Yes, but how are
- 16:04we going? That is? Now? Keep? Might tell us go train
- 16:07on his house? David Hallam goes out, sad Mabel Leonard, that shoe
- 16:14buckle she brought in here this morning? Yes, that was Myra's. Oh
- 16:18what a dune the head? I am Why didn't I see it before?
- 16:21See? What where did Mabel find that buckle? Certainly not at Myra's house.
- 16:26She must have found it outside somewhere. Don't you see what that means?
- 16:29Huh? Admyra wasn't killed in her own house. Now we have to
- 16:33is find out where she was killed? Leonard? How well have you got
- 16:36that crow training? Pretty well? Why that? If you told her to
- 16:40put it back where she found it, what's she doing? I don't think
- 16:42so. She's not that smart. It's safe than hours, and she brought
- 16:45it here all I then that letter from Mara might tell us what we want
- 16:51to know. I want to know the minute that man goes out, let
- 17:14me see the desk. Oh, he would keep it locked. I don't
- 17:23think he'd be so careless as to leave it under the chair cushions. Well,
- 17:27that would be too opy. Hello, Oh what is it, Leonard?
- 17:41Is he coming down? I haven't seen it, but it's getting dark,
- 17:44and I'm afraid I won't be able to keep watching for you much longer.
- 17:45I can't be not got to find that letter. It might be dangerous
- 17:48he walks in on you. Well, I'll have to take that chance all
- 17:52the while, I'll go look some more, all right, but hurry chair
- 17:56cushions, Oh no, of course, not liquor cabinet. Who would think
- 18:03of looking in a liquor cabinet for a letter? Only it didn't get dark?
- 18:10So that there? Hello, Leonards, bring it over here right away,
- 18:19Leonard, Why don't you get hurt of there? I'm afraid it's too
- 18:22late. Well, Leonard's end for a live from a comic quick, I
- 18:26can't say it's dark. Get a light? Sure? Hey, hey you
- 18:56mister h why like excitement about? Where do you think you're going? Not
- 19:02thinking you're honor? I'm going for a walk. Where's miss walden Ann she's
- 19:06supposed to be here? Yeah, let's go into your house, all right?
- 19:08If you like why we're doing that little thing? Would you mind telling
- 19:12me what this is all about? In time? Where is she? I
- 19:17don't know. When I left the village, the house was empty. When
- 19:19I came back, it was still empty. She spoke to mister Case on
- 19:22the phone from here. Really, perhaps I should lock my door when I
- 19:26go out. I think my neighbors would disapprove in none of my business,
- 19:30but this matter to miss Walden. Mister Hyland, would you be a gum
- 19:36chewing character? Gum chew sometimes and I want to get rid of a bad
- 19:41taste. How did you get rid of the gum? Spit it out on
- 19:44the floor? What you mean over there by that table? Well, maybe
- 19:48you will a lot sooner than be expecting. Are you ready to talk about
- 19:53miss Walden? Of course yes, I think she's beautiful. I think she's
- 19:57a charming girl. Now she only a bit more? Is that all you've
- 20:02got to say? No, But for the moment it'll have to do.
- 20:04Well. You better come with me miss van Wick's house. Why there,
- 20:11my boys, and giving that place a mighty fine one sober? Somebody that
- 20:15had done to kill him could think that we'd have no more reason to go
- 20:18back there, but we have, mister Hyland, come on, well,
- 20:30are you satisfied Elisa the trace of Ann Walden upstairs or even down here in
- 20:36the cellar? I ain't through looking yet, mister Hyland. What do you
- 20:37expect to find her in the coal bend? Maybe send me that shovel.
- 20:42On the other hand, maybe you better do the shovel. I don't deny
- 20:48well anything to make a select man happy, especially if he's the chairman of
- 20:52the board. You are mighty calm, young creature. But assure yourself.
- 20:59I was brought up right. What do you know about miss van Wick?
- 21:03She's dead. Postman mentioned she got a letter from New York this afternoon.
- 21:07It was a woman's handwriting. I get lots of letters from dead people,
- 21:11and you can never tell about that, Elisha. Sometimes you can swear a
- 21:17person is alive, and then after you've known him for a while, put
- 21:19this letter and mister Hyland, the postman had an idea. It was miss
- 21:22van Wick's handwriting. Eh, somebody remembers of her handwriting. I didn't kill
- 21:27her. That's what you're leading up to. Yep, that's what I'm leading
- 21:30up to. You got that letter? Nope, I'll suit yourself, mister
- 21:37Tyland. You don't have to talk now. Wait about a time that suitcase
- 21:41was buried in the cold well lu schwamp junk ju diamonds million dollars worth.
- 21:52So that's it. That's why miss van Wick was killing Huh. She come
- 21:57back here too soon? Whoever it was heighten this stuff here, figured that
- 22:00you'd be in New York maybe and maybe not, mister Hyland, no,
- 22:04maybe that person knew she was coming back. Maybe him and miss Vanwick were
- 22:08sort of partners and the business that wasn't legal, If that makes sense to
- 22:11you, mister Hyland, I don't know. I don't go in, but
- 22:14I guess work. How about Cyanide Potassiu singing way off key el, you've
- 22:18got the right tune? Int you put your hands understand? All right now?
- 22:25Just you walk up them stairs. No monkey business, my friend.
- 22:29I got an eye like an ego operator one through four. Hello, all
- 22:48right, so this is Leonard case Devon ann Walden. No heavens, what
- 22:52are you doing about it? I got searching parties out all over the eye.
- 22:56What about David Hyland from his house that she called for help? You
- 22:57talk, mister Case. Stop miss Waller about miss van Wick too. You
- 23:03mean that he killed Mara Well, oh, mister case. Yes, folks
- 23:07here in the village, tell me your car's been popped all day with the
- 23:10general store. I know my bucket samurai took it this morning. Send him
- 23:14back to see him with him. Nobody's seen him since two o'clock this afternoon.
- 23:18I reckon you will have to be advertising for the new butler, mister
- 23:21case that's ridiculous. Sim wouldn't quit me without notice? Maybe not, but
- 23:26he ain't on the island. Okay, sister, on your feet, shut
- 23:45up. They're gonna take a ride now in the open sea, fresh air
- 23:51and just enough fog to keep me. And you are to say nice in
- 23:56it the way that five comes in over the water, perfect tighter. You're
- 24:00better than the stinking old tool shed. Oh no, you got so much
- 24:07to say with that gag, you don't let it. Yeah, okay,
- 24:11get on. I done in the boat, and maybe when we get way
- 24:17out in the ocean, I'll tell you a nice interesting bedtime story. Okay,
- 24:40maybe this is it? Yeah? You're dying to talk, ain't you.
- 24:45Okay, I'll take off the gag. Hey, you can scream too,
- 24:52and it showing around here to hey eight, mine's got yours. One
- 24:56letter case finds out about this? What's he gonna do? Fire me?
- 25:00You've got against me? Why did you bring me out here to kill me?
- 25:06I don't like snoopers, baby, I was only trying to detect myself.
- 25:11Elisahm. Congress respected me of killing Myra ben Wick. I didn't do
- 25:14it. I had to find out who did it. Went after a letter.
- 25:18I thought it might give me a clue. Yeah, did that letter
- 25:22contain any evidence? Then lend me what kind of evidence you should Damn,
- 25:33Anti can't be afraid to tell me now I'll never have a chance to All
- 25:41right, you are well? Are you going to tell me? Oh?
- 25:45Aren't you? Baby? That let him at the difference between a Mania bucks
- 25:51and zero, that highland guy, and he wanked me of the death of
- 25:53Myra. What's the matter? Take a vote out there, you make one
- 26:00shine? You are you little? I'm gonna finish you off right now,
- 26:08get out of here ahead. And that's the whole story. Linnis. Haven't
- 26:41been for Elijah, I'd be a hum of the ocean now. And Darling,
- 26:45I don't know what to say to you, So it's all my fault
- 26:51and worked for me. I trusted him because I don't know that he was
- 26:55a diamond thief and that he killed Myra. He did kill Myra, didn't
- 26:57deal all right, reckon show. We've got in the way of knowing now
- 27:02with him at the bottom of the ocean. Well, all I can say
- 27:03is thanks for saving Anne. Now, how about a party to celebrate Sam
- 27:08Gone? I gets left her a lie on Mabel to be honored. Mabel,
- 27:12Candy, Candy, Mabel for the lead. If she could only Mabel.
- 27:19She threw out the window then and she's flying for Mar's house, Andy
- 27:23for the lady. Mister Kane, I don't understand I got into that bird.
- 27:27It's never disobeyed orders, and I reckon she ain't disbeying him. Now
- 27:32he's flying to the only lady she knows. All right, mister cash and
- 27:37talk, Oh gotta mind it. But I got nothing to say. That's
- 27:41your privilege. But you killed Mera van Wick by sending that bird out last
- 27:47night with a piece of poison candy. And you've done it because you knew
- 27:51the lady would take the candy from the bird. Maybe is an omen of
- 27:53reconciliation. Miss Warren, did you know that? Mister case and miss van
- 27:59Wick? Which husband and wife? Nor? Yeah? I asked the police
- 28:03in New York to do a routine check on this family. Can they come
- 28:07up with a dude? Lennard? All right? So what I didn't want
- 28:10to around? I here to stay away from the island, leave me alone.
- 28:12You had good reason too. She might have found them diamonds and they
- 28:17called him. That would have been too bad. It wouldn't been for you,
- 28:36David. And wow, what brings you down to the beach at this
- 28:41hour of nights? You and some of the things you can explain to me
- 28:44about Leonard? Oh oh, the ned case was a smuggler Sam Ray worked
- 28:49for it, got a lot of others. It was my job to round
- 28:52up the gang from the top down. Your job. I'm an agent at
- 28:56the Treasury departments. Oh oh, that tells me a lot. Well,
- 29:02that's why I had to be so tough with you on occasions. I couldn't
- 29:04take the chance of being implicated in a murderer. I would have had to
- 29:08explain my position to Elisha. But he's an officer of a law rounding up
- 29:14a gang of Smugglers's my job? Finding a murderer was his? Yes,
- 29:18But what about that letter you received from Maara that my dear was an authorization
- 29:22for me to enter her house and search it. Oh but little dope you
- 29:32are. Dad. Come on, let's take a walk, And so closes
- 29:53to Night's Crime Club book Death Blew Out the Marriage, based on the story
- 29:57by Kathleen Moore. Stedman Coles did the radio adaptation. Roger Bauer produced and
- 30:04directed. Oh I beg your pardon. Hello, I hope I haven't kept
- 30:08you waiting. Yes, this is the Crime Club, So I'm the librarian.
- 30:15Ah, I'm over a week from tonight. Good. We have a
- 30:19very unusual story about a murderer who was revealed by post these stands. It's
- 30:26called for the Hangman. In the meantime, well, in the meantime,
- 30:33there's a new Prime Club book available this week and every week at bookstores everywhere.
- 30:38It's available now. Quite all right, and we'll look for you next
- 30:42week. This program came to you from New York. Mutuals. Mystery Are
- 31:30continues immediately out of the station night adification with a casebook of Gregory Hood.
- 31:40This is the Mutual Broadcasting System. Welcome back. While I have to be
- 31:59honest, I didn't recognize most of the actors. Uh. Future episodes of
- 32:04the Crime Club do include a cast list, which is helpful. But this
- 32:10was this was an interesting story. I recognized one voice for sure, Richard
- 32:15Colemore, who's better known as Boston Blackie. And this this was just a
- 32:21nice story. And they did a good job because, you know, taking
- 32:23an entire mystery novel and condensing it into half an hour that is a challenge
- 32:30UH, and they did a great job, I think, establishing atmosphere and
- 32:35covering just enough of the complexity to make it an interesting story. So I
- 32:38hope you enjoyed the Crime Club. And actually this will be next Sunday,
- 32:45will be the last Sunday we haven't brought you something. Between the video theater
- 32:49programs UH and the UH and UH the specials we did. We we've had
