- 0:08Speaker 1: every single day on Australia's most downloaded parenting podcast. Today,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we put ourselves under the microscope, as we do every Friday,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and share ways that we can be more intentional trying
- 0:19Speaker 1: to get it right. My story the biggest fail I
- 0:21Speaker 1: have ever had in my efforts to make our family happier.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You're laughing because you know what's coming. Oh my goodness,
- 0:28Speaker 1: did I get this wrong?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Oh?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Like, it's so wrong. What's your one? I don't know
- 0:32Speaker 1: what you're going to talk about today.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about real love.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Huh And you're saying with a smile on your face,
- 0:38Speaker 1: which makes me think that it's something else.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Oh.
- 0:40Speaker 1: We've got a couple of big news items as well
- 0:41Speaker 1: coming up right after the break. Stay with us. Hello,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining us on the Happy Families podcast,
- 0:49Speaker 1: Real Pairing Solutions every single day. It's Australia's most downloaded
- 0:52Speaker 1: parenting podcast. If you knew here, we really appreciate you
- 0:55Speaker 1: being with us. Every Friday, we put ourselves under the microscope.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We have a close look at everything we've done ideally right,
- 1:01Speaker 1: but frankly quite often wrong and try to be better tomorrow.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Hence the title of our Friday podcast, I'll do Better Tomorrow, Kylie,
- 1:10Speaker 1: before we crack on with our stories, yours and mine.
- 1:14Speaker 1: New South Wales HSC exams they started today I think,
- 1:18Speaker 1: or maybe it was yesterday, one of the two. Anyway,
- 1:19Speaker 1: New South Wales HSC exams Year twelve. It's on like
- 1:22Speaker 1: Donkey Kong, and next week and the week after other
- 1:26Speaker 1: states fall into line and start to put the year
- 1:29Speaker 1: twelve students under the pub We did an awesome podcast
- 1:32Speaker 1: on Monday morning about the year twelve exam season, What matters,
- 1:35Speaker 1: what doesn't, how to survive it if you've got older
- 1:38Speaker 1: kids or kids that are maybe heading there next year.
- 1:40Speaker 1: This is definitely worth a listen right now though we
- 1:44Speaker 1: need to talk about Oh sorry, there's one more bit
- 1:46Speaker 1: of news. This is so exciting. The other week on
- 1:48Speaker 1: I'll Do Better Tomorrow, you were talking about how our
- 1:51Speaker 1: eldest daughter has started reading my books. She pick up
- 1:56Speaker 1: Relationship Rules, started reading it, decided that she needed to
- 1:58Speaker 1: put some more water in the role relationship bucket, not
- 2:00Speaker 1: that she has with her daughter, but that she has
- 2:02Speaker 1: with her husband. Just as good as far as I'm concerned.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Then her whole friendship group started to get into the
- 2:07Speaker 1: whole relationship bucket thing and started talking about it. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: didn't know this, but I found out just the other
- 2:12Speaker 1: night when Chanelle and Jared came over for dinner with Indy.
- 2:16Speaker 1: That's our daughter and son in law and our granddaughter.
- 2:18Speaker 1: For those who are new to the pod, turns out
- 2:21Speaker 1: that Jared's gym buddy, bodybuilder Nathan, is a Happy Family's
- 2:27Speaker 1: podcast listener, and apparently last week you made him cry.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You literally got him weepy as you were telling that.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Sorry, Nathan.
- 2:36Speaker 1: So Nathan, I mean, this guy's like huge. You can
- 2:40Speaker 1: imagine standing there doing bicep curls and trying you as
- 2:42Speaker 1: he listens to your story in the gym. Nathan was
- 2:47Speaker 1: so sorry.
- 2:48Speaker 2: That's terrible.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And also, we've had some landscaping done in our yard
- 2:51Speaker 1: just recently, and it's.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Not very often I get stopped, but you got stopped.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I've been away and I came in. I drove in
- 2:58Speaker 2: the driveway and one of the lands escapers came up
- 3:00Speaker 2: to me and he said, I just have to come
- 3:02Speaker 2: and thank you. And I'm looking at and going we
- 3:04Speaker 2: haven't even met. What have I done?
- 3:06Speaker 1: You're paying my wages for the week, and we've got
- 3:08Speaker 1: a job landscaping things.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So I'm looking at the gardens thinking what have I done?
- 3:12Speaker 2: And he said, he said, I've been listening to your
- 3:15Speaker 2: podcast for a couple of years here now, and he said,
- 3:18Speaker 2: the work that you and Justin do has literally changed
- 3:20Speaker 2: the relationships I had with my children and my wife.
- 3:23Speaker 1: How did he know it was you? Did he recognize
- 3:24Speaker 1: you from the photo and the image on the podcast.
- 3:26Speaker 2: He read the name on the job sheet and he
- 3:28Speaker 2: was like, no, way right. He was so excited to
- 3:32Speaker 2: come here.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I gave him a couple of books and
- 3:34Speaker 1: one of the other guys as well, Ned, So Ned
- 3:36Speaker 1: and Will were working in our yard and Ned said
- 3:39Speaker 1: that Will has got him onto the podcast. So Ned
- 3:41Speaker 1: and we love what you did in our garden. Thank you.
- 3:43Speaker 1: We love it and we hope that you enjoy the books. Hey,
- 3:46Speaker 1: while we're on this as well, it was my fiftieth
- 3:49Speaker 1: birthday in the last week or so. I've lost count
- 3:51Speaker 1: of the days. It was like eight or nine days
- 3:53Speaker 1: ago or something like that. And you, with the help
- 3:57Speaker 1: of Mim Hammonds who looks after all of it, admin
- 3:59Speaker 1: and research and other support for the pod, got a
- 4:01Speaker 1: hold of a whole bunch of Happy Families listeners and
- 4:03Speaker 1: Happy Families members and asked them to say nice things
- 4:06Speaker 1: about me, and they did. And it was so nice
- 4:09Speaker 1: to sit around the dining table as you read out
- 4:11Speaker 1: everybody's messages about how the podcast and how the work
- 4:13Speaker 1: that we do has made an impact in their lives.
- 4:16Speaker 1: What a treat. I mean, a life well lived has
- 4:19Speaker 1: nothing to do with where you live, or what kind
- 4:21Speaker 1: of car you drive, or even the holidays you take
- 4:23Speaker 1: or what your bank balance is. It comes down to
- 4:25Speaker 1: relationships and the people that you're able to influence an effect.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And I sat there and I felt a little bit
- 4:31Speaker 1: funny hearing all of these people saying nice things about me,
- 4:33Speaker 1: But most of all, I just sat there and felt
- 4:35Speaker 1: so grateful. What a privilege, what a gift it is
- 4:37Speaker 1: to be able to do this podcast to make a
- 4:38Speaker 1: difference in people's lives. So to everyone who's listening, we
- 4:41Speaker 1: really appreciate that you give us your time each day
- 4:44Speaker 1: so that we can try to make your family happier.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It makes our life feel like it's a life well lived.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Oh and I've got to quickly mention over the last
- 4:52Speaker 1: couple of weeks. I have done a lot of travel.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I've been home for the last few days, but my goodness,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I was in Kratha, i was in Perth for a
- 4:59Speaker 1: couple of days. I was in regional New South Wales.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I've kind of been all over the place and it's
- 5:04Speaker 1: just been so much I love going to the regions.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Like being in Karatha. There's all these people coming up
- 5:09Speaker 1: to me who are saying, nobody ever comes to a
- 5:11Speaker 1: place like Kartha. That's like Western Australia's equivalent of Townsville.
- 5:15Speaker 1: It's just so far up north and it was thirty
- 5:18Speaker 1: nine degrees when I've got off the plane. But people
- 5:20Speaker 1: were so excited to come along and listen and participate.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Podcast listeners there as well, So a huge thank you
- 5:26Speaker 1: to everybody there. Kylie, we've done too much news. Let's
- 5:29Speaker 1: hear your story. You're older, but it's tomorrow your true
- 5:34Speaker 1: love story. What's going on here? I have no idea
- 5:37Speaker 1: where we're going with this. So our kids have.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Cousins from New South Wales and their holidays extended past
- 5:43Speaker 2: our holiday.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, there's always that one week overlap and then one
- 5:45Speaker 1: week we're there.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and your mum had come up to spend some
- 5:49Speaker 2: time with the cousins, and she invited Emily to come
- 5:54Speaker 2: down to the theme parks. We've got annual passes and
- 5:56Speaker 2: it makes it so easy for them to all to
- 5:58Speaker 2: get together and play and worth highlighting.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Though two hours, it's a solid two hour drive from
- 6:05Speaker 1: the Sunshine Coast to the first available theme park.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, when I told Emily what we were doing, she said,
- 6:11Speaker 2: how long do I have to sit in the car?
- 6:13Speaker 2: And when I told her, she looked at me with
- 6:15Speaker 2: kind of like pain in her face. She was like,
- 6:19Speaker 2: this is such a hard choice. Just had two hours
- 6:23Speaker 2: snapped to sit in the cup of two hours, but
- 6:25Speaker 2: I want to see my cousins. Anyway, she braved it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: We got in the car, we drove down and we
- 6:30Speaker 2: managed to convince your mom, who has never gone on
- 6:33Speaker 2: a ride with the kids before.
- 6:35Speaker 1: My mom is terrified. We went forward driving once with
- 6:37Speaker 1: my mum and I.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Think I still have the scars on my shoe.
- 6:40Speaker 1: She literally put her nails into your arms as she
- 6:42Speaker 1: held on to you and were just driving along the
- 6:44Speaker 1: sandy track. It's not like we were doing real full driving,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and she was like screaming ahead off So to get
- 6:51Speaker 1: my mum on a ride other than what the teacups,
- 6:55Speaker 1: which is like you sit there and it's a little oh.
- 6:58Speaker 2: That spins around and makes you feel really great.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That was too much for my mum. Yeah, I agree, Yep,
- 7:02Speaker 1: she won't. She won't do dodge and cars. She won't.
- 7:04Speaker 1: She won't do any kind of ride that has any
- 7:06Speaker 1: thrill at all. What do you call it? The carousel?
- 7:09Speaker 1: The carousel is as far as she'll go, where you
- 7:11Speaker 1: sit on the horse and you bob up and down
- 7:12Speaker 1: as you slowly spin around in that circle and hear
- 7:15Speaker 1: the music.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Well knowing bad, she did amazing because one of the
- 7:19Speaker 2: first rides the kids decided to go on was the
- 7:21Speaker 2: log ride. And I'm not a big ride person, but
- 7:24Speaker 2: I love the log ride. And it was so hot.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It was eleven o'clock. It was really hot, and I
- 7:29Speaker 2: was like, I'm going to go on that log ride
- 7:30Speaker 2: because I'm hoping I am going to get completely drenched.
- 7:33Speaker 1: H Queensland Spring, welcome to it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and shemmed an Ard and the kids. As soon
- 7:38Speaker 2: as I said I really think you should come on it.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You should have seen the kid's faces just like light up.
- 7:44Speaker 2: They then were you so excited? To think that she
- 7:47Speaker 2: would come, and when she finally agreed to it, they
- 7:51Speaker 2: were just they were speechless, like they really couldn't put
- 7:55Speaker 2: into words how excited they were that she was going
- 7:57Speaker 2: to join us.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And this is five grandkids age between like what eight
- 8:02Speaker 1: and twelve, eight and thirteen something like that. Yeah, just
- 8:05Speaker 1: jumping out of the skin. I wasn't there, but like,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I know how unusual it would be for my mum
- 8:10Speaker 1: to say that, So I can imagine.
- 8:11Speaker 2: So a log ride takes eight people, and there was
- 8:14Speaker 2: two girls behind us, your mum's in front of them,
- 8:17Speaker 2: and the entire they had an entire mouthful. The entire time,
- 8:21Speaker 2: your mum was talking and screaming and squealing and saying,
- 8:24Speaker 2: you know, I can't believe you're making me do this.
- 8:26Speaker 2: This is the worst. And we were going through the
- 8:28Speaker 2: smooth bit at that point, but she had already seen
- 8:32Speaker 2: obviously the big crash that happens when you go down
- 8:34Speaker 2: the big slide coming out of the mountain, and we
- 8:38Speaker 2: got to that point and oh my gosh, she just
- 8:41Speaker 2: screamed the log log all the way down the hill.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But the kids just loved it, and at the end
- 8:47Speaker 2: of it, she said, okay, it wasn't It wasn't as
- 8:49Speaker 2: bad as I remember it. And she did it again, right,
- 8:52Speaker 2: she actually did it again.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The problem was, I'm trying to work out how this
- 8:58Speaker 1: ties in with your audio. But tomorrow your incredible loving
- 9:00Speaker 1: sacrifice other than that you stood in line at Warner
- 9:02Speaker 1: Brothers movie World.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Well that was the sponsored That was the preface because because.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I did that, like I think, I got three rides
- 9:09Speaker 1: in five hours when I did it last Holidays with them, I.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It was a really big deal for you, mum. But
- 9:14Speaker 2: halfway through the day the kids, a few of the
- 9:16Speaker 2: kids decided they wanted to go on the Joker.
- 9:19Speaker 1: The Joker is the best, the best ride. It is
- 9:22Speaker 1: so much fun.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So there's four kids, but only three want to go,
- 9:25Speaker 2: and nobody wants to ride next to a stranger. And
- 9:29Speaker 2: the kid who doesn't want to go rue he says, Annie, Kylie,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I think you should go on it. And I looked
- 9:35Speaker 2: at it and I said, oh, you have no idea.
- 9:37Speaker 2: There is no way I'm going on that ride. And
- 9:40Speaker 2: he said, Nan went on the.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Log ride, the log Ride of the Joker. They're not
- 9:45Speaker 1: even in the same universe.
- 9:47Speaker 2: They're not. But to him it was like Nan did it,
- 9:50Speaker 2: so you have to. Okay, I said, I'll make you
- 9:53Speaker 2: a deal. If you go on the Joker, I'll go too,
- 9:57Speaker 2: and he went, no way, not doing it anyway.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So twelve years old, three twelve.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so we've still got three kids wanting to go
- 10:05Speaker 2: on a ride and one of them has to have
- 10:07Speaker 2: somebody else to go with them. And my mother in
- 10:10Speaker 2: law looked at me and she just said, you better
- 10:12Speaker 2: do it. So I stood in that line for probably
- 10:15Speaker 2: an hour, and the entire time I thought I was
- 10:19Speaker 2: going to vomit. I honestly, Oh my god.
- 10:22Speaker 1: This is exactly like. This is literally it's the way
- 10:26Speaker 1: our psychology works. We tell ourselves these stories, we get
- 10:28Speaker 1: ourselves worked up. It's all in your head. You rang me.
- 10:31Speaker 2: The kids are laughing at me the whole time. They
- 10:33Speaker 2: can see like I have no color in my face.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I rang you. I was asking what you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: up to, and you said I'm five minutes from dying.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You had like there were three more rides and it
- 10:43Speaker 1: was going to be you on the Joker, and you
- 10:45Speaker 1: said I'm going to be dead soon. It's been nice
- 10:48Speaker 1: knowing you, or something like that.
- 10:50Speaker 2: No, I said, if I don't make it out alive.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I just want you to know you were the best
- 10:54Speaker 2: thing that ever happened to me.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I should have said that better, because that is a really,
- 10:58Speaker 1: really beautiful thing to say.
- 11:00Speaker 2: And you told me to ring you back after the.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Back and tell me how much you enjoyed it.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd be.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Great, Yeah, so amazing.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I didn't ring you back, and you might have run
- 11:09Speaker 2: me three times before I finally picked up.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yes, and you picked up and you made it sound
- 11:15Speaker 1: like an answering machine.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And I may have said something along the lines of
- 11:22Speaker 2: This is a recording of Kylie Coulson. I died on
- 11:25Speaker 2: the Joker. I'm done, I'm done, And you cracked up,
- 11:30Speaker 2: you laughed, you made fun of me all afternoon.
- 11:32Speaker 1: How much fun is the Joker?
- 11:34Speaker 2: It was so bad? So I actually looked up because
- 11:37Speaker 2: your mum went on the log ride and then she
- 11:39Speaker 2: did actually go on the Flight of the Wicked Witch.
- 11:42Speaker 2: That ride goes at sixty seven kilometers an hour.
- 11:46Speaker 1: The log ride would be like thirty five, Yeah, crazy.
- 11:50Speaker 2: The Joker at maximum speed one hundred and fifteen kilometers
- 11:55Speaker 2: per hour. That thing flies. And you know how like
- 11:58Speaker 2: on the old roller coasters you used to have the
- 12:00Speaker 2: kind of like lulls in the ride. You'd have these
- 12:02Speaker 2: big corkscrews or you know, you do the loop, but
- 12:05Speaker 2: then there'd be a little bit of time where you
- 12:06Speaker 2: kind of adjusted. No, yes, this thing just doesn't stop.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It was so fast.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You know that you drive fast than that on the freeway.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, don't turn upside down and.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, and my bum kept lifting off the seats.
- 12:24Speaker 3: I actually said to the lady as she locked me in,
- 12:29Speaker 3: I said, how many people die on this thing?
- 12:32Speaker 1: So what's your take on message? Missus? Happy families, because
- 12:35Speaker 1: this has been the longest story you've ever told. It
- 12:37Speaker 1: was clearly it was clearly a big deal for you.
- 12:39Speaker 2: It was a really big deal for me. You know,
- 12:42Speaker 2: ultimately everything we do is about our kids, right, And
- 12:47Speaker 2: I actually really really don't like going on rides.
- 12:50Speaker 1: It makes me feel we got that. Yeah, we definitely
- 12:53Speaker 1: got that.
- 12:54Speaker 2: But seeing those kids' faces light up, yeah because I
- 12:58Speaker 2: did something, and listening to them constantly giving me the
- 13:01Speaker 2: pep talk. I believe in you, Artie, Kaylie, you can
- 13:04Speaker 2: do It was just such a beautiful bonding experience. I
- 13:08Speaker 2: will never go on that thing ever again, but they'll
- 13:12Speaker 2: have the memory that I did do it nice.
- 13:14Speaker 1: After the break, the biggest disaster that I have ever
- 13:20Speaker 1: been in charge of. Find out more ever, Yeah, stay
- 13:24Speaker 1: with us, Okay, it's time for my I'll do better tomorrow.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I can actually do this one fairly quickly. I have
- 13:37Speaker 1: decided that because I'm traveling a little bit less for
- 13:40Speaker 1: the next few weeks, that I want to contribute a
- 13:41Speaker 1: whole lot more around the house. I finished the manuscript
- 13:43Speaker 1: for my book. That feels really good. So I've got
- 13:45Speaker 1: a little bit of margin, not heaps, but I've got
- 13:47Speaker 1: a little bit of margin where I can get involved
- 13:49Speaker 1: in the kitchen and start doing a bit of the
- 13:50Speaker 1: stuff that really means a lot to me, like helping
- 13:52Speaker 1: you with the stuff that you would normally do under
- 13:54Speaker 1: our typical division of labor, and spending more time with
- 13:56Speaker 1: the kids. So I can't remember what day it was
- 13:59Speaker 1: or why, but I was cooking. Oh it was the
- 14:01Speaker 1: day you're at theme parks, that's right, And I said,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I've got dinner. Don't worry, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 14:05Speaker 1: What time we be home. You're gonna be home at
- 14:07Speaker 1: seven o'clock. Fantastic, It'll be ready at seven. I spent
- 14:10Speaker 1: two to two and a half hours cooking this red
- 14:12Speaker 1: tie curry. There's the recipe in the book. I was
- 14:15Speaker 1: so busy in the office that I got our twenty
- 14:17Speaker 1: one year old daughter Ella to read out the recipe,
- 14:21Speaker 1: go through the cupboard and the fridge, make sure we
- 14:22Speaker 1: had everything, and just give me a shopping list of
- 14:24Speaker 1: what we didn't have. I raced out of the shops,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I grabbed what I needed. There was one item on
- 14:30Speaker 1: the list that wasn't properly written. She wrote two cans
- 14:35Speaker 1: of unsweetened and then she didn't write what needed to
- 14:40Speaker 1: be unsweetened, two cans of unsweetened something. And I had
- 14:42Speaker 1: no idea what it was. And so I gave her
- 14:45Speaker 1: a quick call and I said, what, what do I need?
- 14:46Speaker 1: Two cans of unsweetened what? And she said, hang on
- 14:50Speaker 1: a second check. And she came back to me like
- 14:51Speaker 1: four seconds later and said condensed milk. And I was like, okay.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I went into the condensed milk aisle and I'm looking
- 14:59Speaker 1: for unsweetened condensed milk. I'm thinking that doesn't make sense.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Condensed milk is sweet anyway. I pick up two cans
- 15:04Speaker 1: of sweet and condensed milk because there was no one
- 15:05Speaker 1: sweetened condensed milk. I came home totally on autopilot and
- 15:10Speaker 1: just started cooking this mealk. Lots and lots of preparation.
- 15:12Speaker 1: This takes a long time to prepare this curry. And
- 15:16Speaker 1: I remember as I was tipping the condensed milk into
- 15:18Speaker 1: the curry, I was just so much on an autopole.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I was annoyed that it wasn't coming out fast enough.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So I got the spatchelor and spooned all the condensed
- 15:25Speaker 1: milk into the curry. I've got all the vegetables cooking,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I've got just the stock, the whole thing. It was perfect.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And then just before you walked in the door, like
- 15:35Speaker 1: whenever you put any milk into something that you cook
- 15:37Speaker 1: on the stove, if it boils, you get this curd
- 15:39Speaker 1: all effect and it's really horrible. And unfortunately, because I
- 15:41Speaker 1: was trying to do too many things, I curdled the
- 15:43Speaker 1: milk and I was just so so upset and it
- 15:48Speaker 1: looked horrendous. But while I'm washing my hands and getting
- 15:51Speaker 1: ready to come in for dinner, you are having a
- 15:53Speaker 1: little chat with the kids.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I've looked at this thing. I have never seen like
- 15:58Speaker 2: curdled like it was. This. This looked like when you
- 16:03Speaker 2: have baking.
- 16:04Speaker 1: It looks like somebody had vomited. That's what it looked
- 16:06Speaker 1: like when you've got.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Baking soda and you add it to your butter mix
- 16:10Speaker 2: and it blows up and gets all puffy and then
- 16:14Speaker 2: just kind of settles. It was like really foamy. And
- 16:18Speaker 2: I've looked at it and I've said to the girls,
- 16:20Speaker 2: dad's tried really hard on dinner. It looks disgusting. He's
- 16:25Speaker 2: absolutely destroyed it, and we are going to eat it
- 16:27Speaker 2: with a smile on our face. And they looked at
- 16:30Speaker 2: me and they were like, okay, mom, yep, we've got this.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I said, it looks terrible, but it will taste fine.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It literally looked it looked like vomit. It was horrendous.
- 16:40Speaker 2: But so I've put it into the bowls and we've
- 16:43Speaker 2: sat down, We've said a prayer, and I've taken my
- 16:46Speaker 2: first bites and it tasted like chicken dessert. It was
- 16:54Speaker 2: carrot and so sweet. I thought I was going to
- 16:57Speaker 2: be sick, like it was so.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Sweet cans of Condon's milk, and what do you think you?
- 17:02Speaker 2: And I looked at it. I was trying so hard
- 17:04Speaker 2: because I wanted to pump you up and I looked
- 17:07Speaker 2: at you, and I said, how much sugar did you
- 17:10Speaker 2: put in this?
- 17:11Speaker 1: And I said, and you.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Said, I didn't put any sugar in it. I just
- 17:14Speaker 2: put two cans of condensed milk. I just about spat
- 17:18Speaker 2: my food out onto the plate, and I've got up
- 17:22Speaker 2: just khacking. I mean, honestly, I've walked over to the
- 17:26Speaker 2: recipe to think, how on earth milk from coconut milk?
- 17:34Speaker 2: And I couldn't read condensed anywhere. There was no condensed nothing.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And then I saw coconut milk, and I went, oh,
- 17:40Speaker 1: we're having pizza tonight.
- 17:45Speaker 2: But you know what was so great about this story? Honestly,
- 17:48Speaker 2: I don't think our family has laughed as much as
- 17:50Speaker 2: we did that night. It could have been a disaster.
- 17:53Speaker 2: You could have been up in arms and all frustrated
- 17:56Speaker 2: and angry, and it could have just been an absolute nightmare.
- 17:59Speaker 2: It was just hilarious. And I grew up in a
- 18:03Speaker 2: home where that wouldn't have happened, Like we wouldn't have
- 18:05Speaker 2: laughed about that. And I was just at the end
- 18:08Speaker 2: of the night, after having the massive day that I
- 18:11Speaker 2: had where I almost died, and coming home to your
- 18:14Speaker 2: experience of destroying dinner I just thought, how awesome, how
- 18:21Speaker 2: awesome that, in spite of it all, we can sit
- 18:23Speaker 2: down and we can just have a really good laugh
- 18:25Speaker 2: about how terrible that was. You know, that was one
- 18:27Speaker 2: of our favorite dinners until you cooked it.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yep. But because this episode's called I'd be better tomorrow.
- 18:35Speaker 1: On the next night, I cooked it again, and this
- 18:37Speaker 1: time I did coconut milk, and everyone ede it and
- 18:40Speaker 1: no one complained and I didn't even hurdle it. I
- 18:42Speaker 1: got it right, which my take on message means is
- 18:46Speaker 1: that if we keep on trying, we can eventually get
- 18:48Speaker 1: it right. We've gone way over time on this podcast,
- 18:50Speaker 1: but we're so glad that you listen, and we hope
- 18:52Speaker 1: that it gave you some entertainment. We hope that it
- 18:54Speaker 1: gave you some inspiration for just connecting better with your
- 18:57Speaker 1: kids and with your partner and wife loved ones. Family
- 19:02Speaker 1: life is so messy. Family life is so hard, and
- 19:06Speaker 1: family life requires so many sacrifices, and yet if you
- 19:10Speaker 1: want to have a happy family, I've actually worked out
- 19:12Speaker 1: that it's taken me this many years. But if you
- 19:13Speaker 1: want to have a happy family, you've got to laugh.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Laughter makes family life happy. If you're not laughing, then
- 19:19Speaker 1: it's just not nearly as happy. So when you do
- 19:22Speaker 1: ruin dinner tonight or tomorrow night, or when one of
- 19:23Speaker 1: the kids does do something stupid, when you have to
- 19:25Speaker 1: make a sacrifice that you find really uncomfortable, if you
- 19:27Speaker 1: can find a way to laugh about it and then
- 19:29Speaker 1: you can do better tomorrow, it's amazing, Like it just
- 19:32Speaker 1: becomes so enriching, so soul stretching and soul enlarging, and gosh,
- 19:38Speaker 1: I just feel like I could wax lyrical about it,
- 19:40Speaker 1: the meaning of life and the purpose of life and
- 19:41Speaker 1: joy in life, but that's really it. The Happy Families
- 19:44Speaker 1: podcast is produced by Justin Rulan from Bridge Media. Mimhammonds

- 20:14Speaker 1: That's coming up Monday on the Happy Families Podcast.
