- 0:20Perth with the long run legs going, breaks the fire when the
- 0:22session gets thick. Ryan in the mix with the numbers
- 0:24and plans from Everson to medals.
- 0:26Yeah, we break it all down. Hard graft Monday left about a
- 0:28Sunday. Still chasing PBS by the World
- 0:30spin. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:34Easy Double Podcast episode 63. I'm joined by the two Co hosts
- 0:40as usual, one of them over there on a public holiday, Bank
- 0:43Holiday Monday afternoon in sunny Island.
- 0:47Dare I say, Owen, how are you doing?
- 0:50Cloudy Ireland but I'm not doing well.
- 0:54Got a little lion, it's got my first run done.
- 0:57Have been to the physio to get a massage and now chat to you
- 1:01guys. So yeah, life's going good.
- 1:04What's the occasion for the public holiday?
- 1:07Yeah, May, I don't. All I know is a May bank
- 1:09holiday, maybe start somewhere. But yeah, very grateful for, I
- 1:14think we've won now every month for a bit like we've won in June
- 1:17as well. So yeah, it's nice now.
- 1:21Good. And Dean, how are you doing in
- 1:24Not so well. It has been sunny but the
- 1:27temperatures have changed over in Perth.
- 1:29How you finding it? Doing it pretty tough mates been
- 1:33very cold having a layer up on my rides and runs so but we get
- 1:40through. Should have seen him out.
- 1:42And I met him for a coffee on Saturday morning after he'd
- 1:46ridden. I, I'd run and he had this base
- 1:49layer on and then he had this like lycra suit on.
- 1:53And it must have been 9:00 AM or so by this point.
- 1:56So I don't know, maybe to be fair, 12° or something.
- 1:59And he was dither in a way. His jaw was chattering.
- 2:04Do you want me to send you over some hats?
- 2:06Some of the beanies. Yeah, we need the beanies now.
- 2:09Genuinely do like the yeah, I didn't I'm putting I'm putting
- 2:15on all this kit and it's all houses stuff, but it's like
- 2:19cycling gloves. Apparently it's called like a
- 2:21skull cap, which I'm sure the beanie can replace riding
- 2:26jackets that are skin tight but still breathable if you need it.
- 2:32Guys, I actually do not feel one bit sorry for use because the
- 2:35last like four months here have been absolute torture, so no
- 2:38sympathy on my end. We can relate.
- 2:41It's the same here. Use wouldn't survive.
- 2:49Have you? You have spent Christmas in the
- 2:51UK before, a while ago. Yeah, that would have been a
- 2:56long time ago now, but yeah. And it was icy and cold.
- 3:00And I think I remember one of my first runs, I went out for a run
- 3:05just in a pair of shorts and a top and my legs started stinging
- 3:09and I was like, what is going on here?
- 3:11What sort of place is this? So I didn't realize just how
- 3:15cold it was like 0 something like that.
- 3:19Bit different to running here. As easy as it is to complain
- 3:24about it getting colder, the days are still lovely though
- 3:26aren't they? Once the gets the midday it's
- 3:29still been like low 20s and the sunshine and not much wind so
- 3:33perfect for exercise. And when does the rain come?
- 3:39Yeah, probably towards the back end of like May, you know like
- 3:44not often like May is one of the best months of the year I think
- 3:47for running. You've done all that running in
- 3:50there hotter months and then it's just now where you're
- 3:54getting that perfect running weather.
- 3:56Like you say, the wind starts, starts to die down.
- 3:58Those easterlies aren't as strong and the mornings are cool
- 4:02and crisp and the days are still pretty sunny.
- 4:04Those low to mid 20s. It's yeah, if you're into your,
- 4:10you're running, then it's, it's a great time and yeah, but gets
- 4:14a bit wetter in June, July, August, the winter months.
- 4:20That's when I'm tactically dropping back to the UK for a
- 4:25dose of the British Summer. Just chase the summer, that's
- 4:29the way to do it. Yeah, well, you can't guarantee
- 4:33anything, but this week we have a, dare I say, a slight down
- 4:38week in results. We'll see how we get on.
- 4:40Kudos. Thanks to Owen for putting the
- 4:42agenda together. I've been a little bit all over
- 4:45the place after unfortunately making the decision to stay up
- 4:49late last night for the the grand occasion of Manchester
- 4:53United Liverpool and that put me on the back foot this morning.
- 4:57No exercise, which meant that I was rushed this evening.
- 5:01No time to do an agenda so we'll skip past that.
- 5:04Fussy. You're OK with that?
- 5:07No, no time to do at the gym either.
- 5:11No time to do the gym either. Ryan, give your priorities all
- 5:15messed up. You when you're up, you didn't
- 5:22then roll into the F1. No.
- 5:27What time was the start? Oh, so at 3:00 AM I think.
- 5:32I did just watch the highlights before though.
- 5:35Couldn't believe what happened to Leclaire on that last slap.
- 5:38It was a good race, boys. It was actually entertaining.
- 5:42Yeah, it was so funny. Declare on the last lap.
- 5:45I just lost. Like it was actually like a
- 5:47Sprint, like Verstappen just got him on the line as well.
- 5:50Yeah. And he lost a good few places.
- 5:52But now, yeah, it was good watch.
- 5:55It was good here because I think it was pushed back three hours
- 5:57because there was a big rainstorm coming.
- 6:00So it just worked perfect. And you know, a game was over,
- 6:04F1 started, and then, yeah, it was perfect afternoon, perfect.
- 6:09Sunday. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 6:13So let's see what we can talk about running then.
- 6:15We've got some results largely from Ireland.
- 6:18So look forward to Owen explaining those to us.
- 6:21And then there's been to be fair, news items are pretty
- 6:24heavy bit of controversy going on.
- 6:27So we shall start with some results coming out of Dublin
- 6:31city. The running results, as you all
- 6:34know by now, proudly brought to you by Bix Nutrition.
- 6:37So if anyone is chasing some gels or some electrolytes, you
- 6:41can visit bixvitamins.com. Use the code double and receive
- 6:4520% off to make the cheap nutrition even cheaper.
- 6:51Right. So Dublin, and this is a
- 6:53relatively this the second year this event is running.
- 6:56So it is the Dublin City Half Marathon, but there's another
- 7:00Dublin Half marathon on later on in the year that's in
- 7:03conjunction with the marathon. So this is sort of a standalone
- 7:06event. And yeah, I had some pretty fast
- 7:10times. It's pretty flat course.
- 7:11And the weather's pretty good now, like it's cool, not sunny.
- 7:15The only thing that can mess you up is the wind.
- 7:17But on the male side, Sean Tobin got the win 6311 in his half
- 7:24marathon debut. A second was Paul O'Donnell in
- 7:276343, and then third was John Travers in a 6354.
- 7:33So yes, Savage running on the male side, the top five were
- 7:38under 65 minutes, which is, yeah, pretty good going.
- 7:43Like, there's a lot of big names missing like this, just a level.
- 7:47And running in Ireland is just skyrocketed.
- 7:50Will they all be like Dublin based to be racing this or would
- 7:54they travel in as well? Shawn Tobin's based in
- 7:58Tipperary, so he'd have to drive off for this and but the other
- 8:02two boys are are Dublin. How long you're talking?
- 8:06You're probably talking two hours from Tipperary.
- 8:13Hopefully got got a little bit of money to cover his petrol.
- 8:18Oh, he definitely did. He got this was a good day for
- 8:20him. Course record.
- 8:22There's actually big money for the win here.
- 8:24So yeah, because he's not, he's not with them.
- 8:28He was with New Balance. He's not when you bounce
- 8:31anymore. So he's actually just cleaning
- 8:33up on the road scene over here at the moment.
- 8:35He's super fit. He's I think he's aiming for
- 8:37Dublin Marathon at the end of the year.
- 8:40But yeah, he's one to watch out for.
- 8:44If he can just stay injury free, he's gonna be on a good one.
- 8:48Any of these sort of halves in interest you?
- 8:51I would or would you like if you're because I think you have
- 8:54an entry to is it Copenhagen? Yeah.
- 8:57Would you still like if you were to pick, would you still look to
- 9:02travel to to to chase the time for 1/2 or some of these like an
- 9:07option to? See, I this Dublin city half,
- 9:10it's sort of awkward because I was planning on running a race
- 9:14this weekend of 1500, but um, I sort of was cooked earlier on
- 9:18the week. So, um, I just pulled out that
- 9:21race. Um, but like, it's totally
- 9:23different training. Like fair enough.
- 9:25Like my, but a lot of my base training would sort of suit me
- 9:27well for half marathon, but not any of that like race specific
- 9:30stuff. So I wouldn't really be fit
- 9:33enough for the half marathon and there is one in Antrim later on
- 9:38there that probably would be work out a lot cheaper than find
- 9:42out Copenhagen. So I might look into that to be
- 9:45honest, because like I do love traveling for running.
- 9:48So like he get to go see Copenhagen, but like financially
- 9:52it's just like a big hit because like you're not going to win
- 9:56Copenhagen half marathon. So would you say, because I
- 10:00suppose, yeah, people race for lots of different reasons.
- 10:03But like a lot of the time it's if like you say, you can't run
- 10:071/2 every day or train and get fit for it.
- 10:09So you often want to pick a fast course.
- 10:13But some of these courses in Ireland do seem.
- 10:16Is it fair to say that they're they're quite good?
- 10:18Options. There's two main ones, so this
- 10:22Dublin City Half is a big one and then there is the Antrim
- 10:25Coast Half Marathon, which gets big names.
- 10:28Yeah, that's part of the Super Half.
- 10:29So that is like a world like certified race and which is
- 10:34really, really good. But other than that.
- 10:36Like that, the one like last year, would we have done the
- 10:39results on it and it was like Jeffrey come war war or and was
- 10:42like Kelly Thackery and stuff like that, Yeah.
- 10:45Yeah, yeah. So it's nearly 59.
- 10:47Months, yeah, OK. And so yeah, there are two main
- 10:53ones, but like a lot of them aren't world like certified.
- 10:56So you really don't know if they're like legal if you get
- 10:59me? Yeah.
- 11:01OK. I didn't realize.
- 11:02And what about and like his Cardiff like a cheaper option or
- 11:05if you're going to go somewhere then you like Copenhagen.
- 11:09It's not, it's not all that different.
- 11:11Like Cardiff will be grand as well, like because we're pretty
- 11:15lucky where we're situated in Ireland.
- 11:17Like it's just like a quick flight.
- 11:19It's not like you're in Perth and you have to like travel like
- 11:22to Melbourne, something five hours, whereas I can get to like
- 11:26Prague in like 2 or 3 hours on a plane.
- 11:29And like it's going to be a relatively cheap enough city and
- 11:32yeah, good like Airbnb and it's cheap coffee over there.
- 11:36So it's actually grand. And but Copenhagen is that a
- 11:39little bit more expensive, but as a city to live, bought them
- 11:43again, it's a cool experience. So yeah, I'll see.
- 11:47I might even run the Copenhagen half.
- 11:49I might try and get a fast 1500 because I do want to get a fast
- 11:521500 on my legs in this track season.
- 11:55So yeah, we'll see how how things go on the female side.
- 12:04Dean, do you want to give this one a go?
- 12:10He should have given me a chance before the recording.
- 12:15Do I get? Do you want me to give it a go?
- 12:18Embarrass myself but one. 23. OK, well, Ryan, you can go to
- 12:24the second one, I'll go to the first one and the third one.
- 12:26So I'll go like Sasha, Nin, Nina now.
- 12:43Or is it just as it raids? I would have said store share
- 12:47Nick Domino. Sorkin, I don't know.
- 12:51So yeah, he's alright. She was, she won it in 7125,
- 12:58which is I'm really good going and 2nd.
- 13:04Meeve Brannigan. Maeve Brannigan.
- 13:08She ran 7447 and then third. Sheila I Ben.
- 13:15Yeah, Sheila Burn, she ran 7643. So yeah, again, really good
- 13:18going on the female side, like a 71, like that's good going.
- 13:22And so, yeah, don't see half. I think it's getting bigger and
- 13:27bigger. It's actually pretty unique.
- 13:29Like the other half marathon later on the year to Dublin have
- 13:32marathon that's in the Phoenix park, whereas this one's
- 13:35actually in the city, which is pretty cool.
- 13:37You get to run around the city. Closed off and stuff.
- 13:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dudlem City Council are like
- 13:43behind it. So yeah, the big plans for this
- 13:46race and yeah, again, it's pretty flat.
- 13:50No, no disrespect to social there by the way, we're laughing
- 13:53at our illiterate in Irish names, not your actual name.
- 13:58Oh shoot, I think every Irish person knows.
- 14:01It's funny when you try and make like foreign people try and
- 14:04protect their names. Or even soccer.
- 14:07You literally just said the name and I said it wrong again.
- 14:14Then down the other side of Ireland there was the great
- 14:17Limerick run which is another one the biggest like marathons
- 14:21in in Ireland. On the male side that was won by
- 14:25Jaco Regan in two 1930. Second was Alexander Wallace in
- 14:29two 2439 and third was John Kinslatt in two 2642.
- 14:36On the female side here we go again Dee Grady 243 O 7 with
- 14:42taking the win. She is on a hot streak.
- 14:46I think she'd had time to grab her to cheer to the fans and get
- 14:49her kids to cross the line. Second was Grace Rita Fitzgerald
- 14:54in two, 5524 and then third was Anne Marie Connell who ran
- 14:5930425. So you had DS on?
- 15:06One the Limerick. I associate Limerick with the
- 15:10poem. You ever write a Limerick, you
- 15:14guys? Oh, a poem.
- 15:16I know what you mean, yeah. Yeah, and the Ryder Cup is being
- 15:21held there in 2027. Is it which?
- 15:25Which will be big, Yeah. And a dare manner.
- 15:27Yeah, it's. Where, Where is it?
- 15:31Is it's in Ireland, Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:36And so will everyone get around the Ryder Cup team, All of the
- 15:39Ryder Cup team. Oh yeah, it's just where it's
- 15:42held is known to be like a freaking bottleneck and as in
- 15:47like there's the traffic around that place is shit on a good
- 15:50day. So never mind when there's the
- 15:52freaking Ryder cope on, it's going to be chaos and.
- 15:58Yeah. The last.
- 15:59Few editions. We can unite.
- 16:02Yeah. Now we're going to the north
- 16:06side, Northern Ireland, where? Belfast City Marathon was on.
- 16:12This was a pretty, this starts outside, they're like Parliament
- 16:16House and it's a big massive pull up hill.
- 16:19And the winner of this one was a Bay Alemu who ran a 21624.
- 16:27Second was Tedesa Maymu who ran 21624.
- 16:31So this was like a Sprint finish and then third.
- 16:33Was have you seen the clip? Of them finishing.
- 16:37Yeah, it's outrageous. They well, firstly there's a
- 16:41clip of its start and that's the one I sent years on.
- 16:44I think BBC Northern Ireland. Some reason it came up on like
- 16:48my ex feed because someone like quoted it and put remind me to
- 16:53never enter the Belfast City Marathon because the angle they
- 16:58get on this hill, like it literally starts on flat and
- 17:02then within 100 meters the hill is just like that and it looks
- 17:05like it pulls for genuinely like AK and they're all just nailing
- 17:09it up this hill. It's better to have that to
- 17:12start. It reminds me of the State
- 17:15Street in Ballarat. But where?
- 17:20And then the the angle of them finishing.
- 17:23Yeah, they turn a corner and then, you know, So like quite
- 17:26often with marathons, it seems there's a corner maybe like with
- 17:30AK or 800 meters to go. And then like there's not a
- 17:34Sprint, but it's a prolonged, like you can see the finish and
- 17:37you can make a kick. Anyway, this one, it seems to be
- 17:40like there's a corner and then there's 150 meters to the
- 17:44finish. And these two fellas turn the
- 17:46corner together and then their arms are everywhere.
- 17:50And one of them, for some reason, he started like his arms
- 17:53go out like he's celebrating and he's like 50 meters away from
- 17:56the line, the guy still right next to him.
- 18:01But I think the guy who was celebrating somehow just got to
- 18:06not finished though. What's up on marathons being so
- 18:09tight lately? It's really weird, isn't it?
- 18:12Games changed, hasn't it? Yeah.
- 18:15Sitting, sitting. Kick a marathon.
- 18:18But like sitting kick, a 216, like 216 is still very good.
- 18:24On the female side, it was won by Aziza Aloui Sells Sui and she
- 18:31ran 238 flat. Second was Judith Storm who ran
- 18:35239 O nine and third was Melissa Gibson who ran 24244.
- 18:42So yeah, lots of running in Ireland and Northern Ireland
- 18:45over the weekend. I feel like we don't hear too
- 18:49much about like female Irish elite marathoners, but like D
- 18:56there 243 and the woman who's came second in this race, she's
- 19:01from City of Derry 239. Like they're like times are up
- 19:06there only. But I don't know, you don't
- 19:07really hear of many Irish women in like the low two 30s or sub
- 19:112:30. See, there's Fenuola McCormick.
- 19:15She's been to like 5 Olympics and she's got 224 I want to say
- 19:21or something, but she is just like way ahead of everyone else.
- 19:27But I feel like there is a good group coming like my age.
- 19:33Like a lot of the people like the lot of the females, they're
- 19:36like in America or they're just all over the place.
- 19:40You even see like the odd one getting like a pro deal now.
- 19:43So I feel like they're just not focusing on the longer stuff at
- 19:48the moment. But like there is a good group
- 19:50of middle distance females coming through the ranks.
- 19:54What's her name? Ava Crane.
- 19:56Is that the young 1? She so her coach came third in
- 19:59that Limerick run, but yeah, she was meant to.
- 20:02Boston pulled out with an injury and yeah, you just don't hear
- 20:05anything. Like, I don't think she posts
- 20:09that much on social media about her running.
- 20:11So yeah, you just don't hear anything.
- 20:15But again, she's 19, she's super young.
- 20:18Dean, did you see whilst we're on results, Astrid ran 36
- 20:22minutes this weekend. No.
- 20:25Where was that? I was it like the state masters
- 20:29or the national masters or something?
- 20:31I don't know exactly where it was, but yeah.
- 20:34So Astrid, I think she's 50 or in the like 50 plus category,
- 20:40female vet, and she's just run a 10K in 36.
- 20:44I think it was 3638, which she ran a marathon the other week.
- 20:48And I remember saying to Becky, there's a woman from front
- 20:52Runner who's in her 50s and she's just run a marathon.
- 20:55And maybe it was 249. And I was amazed by that.
- 20:59But then let's see, in the 10K result I was just like wow.
- 21:05Yeah, yeah, it's very impressive.
- 21:09Find one. Literally.
- 21:12And we'll go to a Sydney half, there's a runway.
- 21:16Sydney half quickly and Ed Goddard got the win in the half
- 21:19marathon there. 6625, second was James Niprous, who ran 6638 and
- 21:26third was Drew Fryer who ran 6655.
- 21:30On the women's side, Abigail Nordberg, she ran 7626.
- 21:35Ruby Madden was second was 7758 and third was Bethany Garland
- 21:41who ran 79 O 4. So I think that's a pretty big
- 21:44one in Sydney. Is that the one that used to be
- 21:48sponsored by HOKA? Still is sponsored by HOKA.
- 21:52I think I remember chatting to Matt Smith and he might have
- 21:55mentioned he wasn't getting the same sort of assistance to get
- 21:58over there, perhaps at a well, something to that effect.
- 22:01He, I know, I know he wasn't racing that.
- 22:02And so I think that's why he went and ran that race in SA
- 22:06instead. Couldn't get him all the way
- 22:09over there but they sent him to Adelaide.
- 22:11Well, perhaps he just chose that race instead for financial
- 22:16reasons. I don't know, don't know that
- 22:18insurance and outs. Which well, whilst we're on it,
- 22:22I think he did win that race where everyone's Denise some 10K
- 22:27in Adelaide. Just a quick one for Neil and
- 22:30Mccormick's PBS 22346 over the marathon, which was in Valencia
- 22:352024. Yeah.
- 22:38So that's like right in there with like Jen Gregson.
- 22:41And is he kind of territory, isn't it?
- 22:44Unlike Neil McCormick, she's not the springiest of chickens.
- 22:53She's been around like 5 Olympics and we're trying to get
- 22:56her age. Does she train?
- 22:59She live in Ireland and stuff. I don't overeat again, super
- 23:03super private and I think she does do a few training camps in
- 23:07font Ramo and but she's like got 4 kids as well.
- 23:14Fair play. And she's 41.
- 23:19As of May 2026, she's 41, so yeah. 223 wasn't that long ago.
- 23:292024, so two years ago trying to 39.
- 23:36The last set of results we have is from the USA Road 5K
- 23:41Championship, so again a qualifier for the stuff going on
- 23:45in Copenhagen at the end of the year and this was top 2 get the
- 23:50auto queue for the team. So Drew Hunter, not Andrew, just
- 23:55Drew came out on top in 1328 in a blanket finish.
- 24:00Dylan Jacobs was second in 1328 as well and Kupertier taking the
- 24:07the role of Kajalcha in the unlucky first loser coming home
- 24:12in 3rd in 1329. I don't know if you've seen the
- 24:15clip of these coming over the line.
- 24:18They're crazy. There's four of them, isn't
- 24:20there? But they eat.
- 24:22There's like confetti blown into their faces.
- 24:24As soon as they cross the line. It's.
- 24:26Like, say they were pretty scared, like you wouldn't be
- 24:29able to process what that was immediately, would you?
- 24:32No way we're going to say something.
- 24:39Oh no, I think yeah, just echo your point.
- 24:42Like do you remember doing the Usus track and field champs are
- 24:47always so good in the sense of they qualifiers for major
- 24:52championships and both Cooper tier Andrew Hunter were super
- 24:57unlucky in the most recent world champs qualifiers to miss out.
- 25:02And so firstly, nice to see Drew Hunter get a get a win to get
- 25:07get a spot. But then yeah, to your point, I
- 25:09feel like Cooper Tia. How many times does he need to
- 25:12finish one spot outside of getting to put on AUS singlet?
- 25:18Is this the qualifier for the World Road Running Championships
- 25:22in Copenhagen? Yeah.
- 25:24Yeah. And is it top 2?
- 25:26Was it the top 2 get to go? Yeah, Harsh.
- 25:32Yeah, I think I've seen a photo as well.
- 25:34I love him in the race and he was on the front of the group at
- 25:37whatever point it was, so he had to go at least.
- 25:43Chris Schweitzer that. Spring finish was just crazy.
- 25:47Yeah, I don't know who the fourth guy was as well, because
- 25:50although they were 132813281329, there was another fella who was
- 25:55there with them. It would have also been 1329.
- 26:01I think is it Sam Pracle? Pracle is the surname.
- 26:07Yeah, OK. Carissa Schweitzer came out on
- 26:12top of the women's race in 1459. That's first time for on the
- 26:17road. Emma.
- 26:19Grace Haley was second 1501, taking the other Auto Q spot
- 26:23from Grace Hyde in 3rd 1504. Yeah, I feel like amongst
- 26:30professionals and elites, you don't see too many five KS on
- 26:34the road. So it's hard to kind of gauge
- 26:36what's a really good time or not because you just naturally you
- 26:40know what they run on the track, but you also know it's not
- 26:43equivalent to what they do on the road.
- 26:45So impressed with that. Those women's times.
- 26:49They're like 15 dad. Feel like that is a good
- 26:53reflection of what they do on the track.
- 26:56You don't know because like I think like Cooper 2 is run
- 26:59125455 on the track. So I feel like it is like I
- 27:05think it is a totally different race.
- 27:07Like the road just breaks up your rhythm and well, depending
- 27:11on the course, again, I feel like on the track you can get
- 27:15into a real nice rhythm of just following the person.
- 27:17How do you depending if it's paced or not paced?
- 27:20But I feel like it's harder to gauge your effort on the road as
- 27:24well because you don't have the metric of like OK 12 1/2 laps on
- 27:28a track. Like actually don't know when
- 27:31the K markers are coming and but still like 1328.
- 27:35Like it is like it's fast on the road.
- 27:39Have you ever done a fast faster gone Oh.
- 27:42I was just going to say Krisha, SWAT says run half a minute
- 27:45quicker as well. I think she's on the track,
- 27:47yeah. Have you ever done a fast 5K on
- 27:51the road, Dean? No, not, not, not not as a race,
- 27:56and it's not really something offered my interest of Perth
- 27:59races. There's not really one that's
- 28:04this is the you know, state road 5K champs or this isn't
- 28:10notoriously quick. Five Ki feel like you'd make for
- 28:13a great event, you know, like a night of the five KS but on on a
- 28:17crit circuit one night and you just have seated times and you
- 28:21just rotate, you know, a series of races throughout an evening.
- 28:26I reckon it would definitely have a place.
- 28:29And it's very relatable in the sense of with the birth of park
- 28:32run in the what, the last 5-10 years, everyone has a bit of an
- 28:36idea of what they could run and then an offering like that would
- 28:40be well taken up. But yeah, not nothing really
- 28:43exists here. Great for the likes of us as
- 28:45well because you the unfortunate thing with trackers, I feel like
- 28:51I have to put spikes on if I'm going to allow myself to be
- 28:54happy that the time is like a legitimate time.
- 28:57Whereas obviously on the road you can still just RIP it in
- 29:00your super shoes. So best of both worlds.
- 29:04Yep. Right, where are we running
- 29:07News? Powered by Nermia with the
- 29:08performance supplement trusted by Andrus Armgren, Cole Hocker,
- 29:12Connor Mance, Izzy, Bath Doyle and more.
- 29:14Drinking Omeo and prepare to outperform.
- 29:18So this story came up in the week.
- 29:20I haven't actually done too much digging into it, but Abby
- 29:23Steiner, who is a former Puma athlete, is suing them.
- 29:30A four time NCAA champion, two time world champion, she signed
- 29:35with them in 2022 for a massive deal worth a reported
- 29:40$2,000,000. And she's claiming that injuries
- 29:43that she has subsequently suffered since signing with Puma
- 29:48are kind of like a defect in the shoes and the spikes.
- 29:55And that's obviously led to her missing out on teams which she
- 29:59thinks she would have made world championship teams, Olympic
- 30:02teams. So it goes on to say that the
- 30:06lawsuit claims the shoes increased her risk of injuries
- 30:10through the design and specifically because of the
- 30:13carbon fiber plate. They allegedly changed the foot
- 30:19and ankle mechanics during running.
- 30:20Which I mean, I don't think that's no breaking news.
- 30:24Like we all know that's what the Super shoe does.
- 30:27But isn't she? Wasn't she claiming that like
- 30:30they'd specifically made ones for hair which like knowingly
- 30:36exposed her to risk of injury? Apparently they were like faulty
- 30:40or something like she got like dude pairs and like there was
- 30:44apparently Mercedes helped design them or something like
- 30:47the Mercedes F1. There's a connection there as
- 30:49well. And like, you'd want to be
- 30:51fairly sure if you're going like publicly suing Puma.
- 30:55It's a bold claim. Very like bold.
- 30:58Good luck getting sponsored by another shoe company.
- 31:01Yeah. Like, but like Puma come have
- 31:04come out and like, they've strongly like, denied these
- 31:07allegations, saying, like the form products do not cause
- 31:11injuries. Like they've sort of pointed to
- 31:13like other athletes who have like, broken world records and
- 31:16all this sort of stuff in their shoes.
- 31:18So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
- 31:24But yeah, it's just that was really cool, like, crazy to see
- 31:28that she's still like, suing Puma.
- 31:32You hope these things don't get traction because it feels like
- 31:35it's most likely going to lead to reduce funding, which is like
- 31:39such a key pipeline of for professional athletes.
- 31:46Like it's not like we have all these.
- 31:48It's not like the NBA or the Premier League where you have
- 31:52this system that allows athletes to participate like shoe
- 31:56companies have. My understanding is that and
- 31:59race winnings and other ad hoc sponsorships are what funds
- 32:02people. So you'd hate to see something
- 32:05like this bringing down and, you know, a way for people that make
- 32:12money to make money. But it wasn't like they weren't
- 32:15paying her much is like it was a pretty big deal she was on like
- 32:18you presume that they weren't giving her faulty.
- 32:22But then at the same like, do you know, like they go out on a
- 32:24limb and provide all this money, provide the footwear and then
- 32:28they're and then the person gets injured and that's, I don't
- 32:31know. There's like so many other
- 32:34factors that could have caused these injuries other than the
- 32:37shoes. Yeah, there's there's a guy who
- 32:41runs for Wallasey, my club back in the UK and he had the pair of
- 32:45fast stars and I think he'd done like an A multi terrain race in
- 32:50them or not a multi terrain. But like it was largely road and
- 32:55there was a gravel section and as like as tiny stone as pierced
- 33:00the foam and like almost completely wrecked this year
- 33:03when it was towards like the start of it, it's lifespan.
- 33:06And he sends it back to them and they're like trying to distance
- 33:10themselves from it saying like they're not designed to be
- 33:14running on non assault surfaces basically.
- 33:19And these literally found in the description a line which says
- 33:23like built for speed on all surfaces or something like that.
- 33:27So they've reluctantly accepted it.
- 33:32I think that's, I mean, if you backed those claims, then you
- 33:34got to then that's, I think that's fair game.
- 33:39But then you couldn't write it when he actually sent it back to
- 33:42them. They claimed that they didn't
- 33:43receive something like this or it took like 2 weeks to find
- 33:49them. Something else that came to mind
- 33:52with this story. I hope it doesn't turn into
- 33:56doesn't encourage other people to without claim start doing
- 34:03this. I don't know if Dean you're
- 34:05aware Owen, will you remember like the PPI miss selling thing
- 34:09in the UK and Ireland? Was that a thing?
- 34:11Personal protection insurance, remember you would get all these
- 34:15like scam calls from claims management companies trying to
- 34:19tap you up to say where you miss sold insurance with your loan or
- 34:23with your overdraft or with your mortgage because the banks like
- 34:27automatically applied that to people's accounts and then
- 34:31everyone was going through a process of getting it refunded.
- 34:33I hope this isn't the start of like the the running industries
- 34:37version of that where everyone's claiming lawsuits for injuries
- 34:42caused by carbon plates. I feel like it's still like risk
- 34:47you like like running is a high risk injury spore anyway.
- 34:53Like when you think about it like the amount of stress you
- 34:56put on your body. Well, especially at like her
- 34:58level. So yeah, I just don't know how
- 35:03she can prove its shoes like unless it is like a dog pair and
- 35:08she cuts them up and like they're actually let's say it's
- 35:10like half a carbon plate in it or it's just not correct.
- 35:15Yeah, I don't know. Super interesting though.
- 35:18Yeah, interested to kind of follow it and see what comes of
- 35:21it, whether there's anything to it or not.
- 35:26The next story, Rory Leonard is leaving Team Macau.
- 35:30It's a bit of an A day I never thought would come.
- 35:35The boys going well, not going their separate ways, but Rory go
- 35:40in his own way. Kind of feels a bit like Morgan
- 35:43McDonald leaving the OAC group, doesn't it?
- 35:47There's a couple of posts out on social media and it obviously
- 35:51has been done on good terms and no massive falling outs or
- 35:55anything. But I wonder, interested to see
- 35:58where Rory goes because he probably wouldn't be too proud
- 36:03to say that his results over the last 6 to 12 months probably
- 36:08haven't been what he was expecting of himself, given what
- 36:11he'd done prior, like when he ran that British record.
- 36:15And he'd done well at Eurocross one year, I think, didn't he?
- 36:19And then maybe since he hasn't like been able to take another
- 36:22step forward. And he's had a couple of DNFS
- 36:27maybe and a couple of injuries here and there.
- 36:30So perhaps he's just seeing what's on the other side and the
- 36:35training doesn't fully line up for him.
- 36:37Why not? Yeah, like it's very like it is
- 36:43a brave move, but I can see what he's doing as well.
- 36:46Like what he has had like pretty good results.
- 36:49They just haven't been super consistent.
- 36:51And so like he's a phenomenal athlete.
- 36:54So changing up might like probably will help him like a
- 36:58long term like just different stimulus or different training
- 37:02approach. And just where would he go?
- 37:04Like I'm pretty sure he won't go solo.
- 37:06So will he move to America to a whole group over there?
- 37:10But could it be like join that Naz and AZ elite group?
- 37:14Like could he? Because that'll be unbelievable
- 37:17because I think he's he's an American passport.
- 37:19So he can sort of do what he wants regarding going over
- 37:21there. But yeah, I'll be interested in
- 37:23what see what's next move is. I think like training groups can
- 37:30be a bit double edged. Like if you're not the fittest
- 37:33in the training group, there's a there's a tendency to just
- 37:37overreach slightly to run with people that you maybe even in
- 37:41the best interest of where you're at.
- 37:44And so like, and it seems like maybe that was part of the
- 37:47motivation for Morgan McDonald to go his own way was to go back
- 37:51to some of the stuff that he thought was working for him when
- 37:53he was very consistent through their collegiate system.
- 37:58And it already seems to, at least on the outside, to be
- 38:01paying dividends a bit like he ran what, 1312 or something like
- 38:05that on a pretty average night at like on a track in an
- 38:11Australian track summer race. Have you guys seen his latest
- 38:16little video? His teaser about looking to
- 38:19break 13 minutes for 5K? Yeah, watched it.
- 38:22Very good. Yeah, respect it.
- 38:25Yeah, and how exciting is that little series do you like?
- 38:28He's doing what he's going back to what he's wanting to do.
- 38:33I like his content as well. I like the way he does his
- 38:35actual Youtubes and they're not too long.
- 38:39But yeah, I think as a person like I'd noise was easy to
- 38:42listen to. But it must must be fit if he's
- 38:45putting out videos around sub 13.
- 38:50We're sort of saying a couple of weeks ago in Sydney around 1312,
- 38:55like he's not that far and it's the conditions are that's not a,
- 39:01you know, lights paces Diamond League circuit type race.
- 39:06So I think he's and he's never run it before.
- 39:08So I think he's and that's what he he basically said on the
- 39:12video is that I don't I there's a tendency now to just want to
- 39:16do a lot of training. But, and that's what you might
- 39:19do if you're in a big training group and if you can adapt to
- 39:23that training like you've seen with the on guys, whoever gets
- 39:27right at the right time, training that hard gets results.
- 39:31But if you're on the wrong side of that, you can get injured and
- 39:33stay in that injury cycle. So yeah, he is sort of saying
- 39:38I'm excited. I really want to train a lot,
- 39:39but I also am mindful that if I don't want to over train because
- 39:44I only need to get marginally better than what I just ran in
- 39:48order to get into that shape. So.
- 39:51It must be hard to kind of balance the the dynamic of the
- 39:55different like strengths and physiologies of those lads in
- 39:59Team Macau for the coach because was it Alice has gone to the
- 40:03marathon, What's his name? Scott is running like 13 low for
- 40:105K and Callum Elson's still doing like 15 hundreds.
- 40:15So they're all kind of going the different ways.
- 40:17So maybe that's been a bit of a. Thing for Rory as well, because
- 40:22I think don't know, would he see himself as maybe like 5-10
- 40:26thousand and kind of sits in the middle of them all.
- 40:31Callum Elson's a cracker though we're seeing he put a story up
- 40:34saying like great. The the flip side of the coin is
- 40:38that this has moved me up the team Macau rankings by one
- 40:42place. But because Rory's left, it
- 40:46still means that I'm last. Did you see that video of him
- 40:52running with Joey Fields in it as well?
- 40:55Yeah, they look like they've been doing some training
- 40:57together down at Saint Mary's. But just look at how smooth Joe
- 41:02Wakefield looks running that fast.
- 41:06Like, you know, they're pushing because Callum Allison's arms
- 41:08are pumping. Joe Wakefield just looks.
- 41:10He's just so powerful. It's like for one stride, Joe
- 41:14Wakefield, Callum Nelson takes like 2.
- 41:16I don't know. He just looks way more smooth
- 41:18and powerful and I wonder what his next move is going to be.
- 41:23Ask him, Ryan. I'd say he's a decent shout for
- 41:26COM games. But what distance is he going to
- 41:30drop down? Distance.
- 41:32Don't know, they've got a 10K haven't they?
- 41:35And with his run in Valencia, maybe, would that be good
- 41:38enough? But like I think he breaks if he
- 41:41trains for A5 Ki keep you close to breaking 13.
- 41:46Yeah, I've think they got a 5K. Yeah, they do con games.
- 41:51Yeah, that's what I'm going to. Oh no, I'm going to the
- 41:54Europeans. Never mind.
- 41:55You talk, you talk about how smooth he is, but how was the
- 41:59comment you guys made about the London Marathon?
- 42:03Didn't you mention like that 10K pace?
- 42:06His ten, his Valencia 10K pace is what the guys split.
- 42:10Yeah. From 30 to 40K in the marathon.
- 42:12That's just incomprehensible isn't it though?
- 42:14Like what the hell? Yeah, like the the more you deep
- 42:19that, the more it doesn't make sense, so I'm trying not to.
- 42:23But did you? Hear, I want to set you guys
- 42:24off. Did you hear UMM set on the
- 42:28Inside Running podcast? What did?
- 42:31He was like, like, we're all thinking the same thing, but you
- 42:38can't think that way either because he hasn't been caught.
- 42:43And it's sort of not fair that a group of people from that region
- 42:48getting caught will diminish his like, performance because like,
- 42:52like, for all we know he is clean and he's just the best
- 42:54marathoner we've ever seen. It's like it is sort of sad in a
- 42:58way that straightaway we think are drugs.
- 43:02But I think we he was like, we shouldn't be thinking like that
- 43:06either. And you have to sort of give him
- 43:08credit as well. Yeah, I mean.
- 43:12Yes, I was trying to tell you. Nah, I would say like it.
- 43:17I would say it depends like a lot of things, like when do you
- 43:23remember when chef and get it? She ran her world record and it
- 43:28was like 5 minutes better than her previous time.
- 43:32And the guys, the real science of sport guys tried to quantify
- 43:35the leap she'd made and and put it down to a late person later
- 43:39in their career, how that would be possible physiologically.
- 43:41And they struggled. And I was the same.
- 43:45Remember like Mocheteer and everything's 2020 in hindsight,
- 43:48but he went from like a high 13 minute guy to a 12 something
- 43:52guy. Like it's where they it's where
- 43:55the stories make less sense that it's harder to understand and
- 43:59like food to Gelcha, he's run like he's he's the former world
- 44:04record holder over a mile. He's the recent half marathon
- 44:08world world record holder. He's a decorated runner on the
- 44:11track. And then he's gone to the road
- 44:13at a time where the carbon plate technology is transformed
- 44:18things. And like for me, there's there's
- 44:23a narrative there that you can get your head around.
- 44:26And then a little bit similar with Subway, like he ran really
- 44:30fast. Well, he would have he he ran a
- 44:33pretty incredible race in Berlin last year or albeit it was
- 44:37incredibly hot, but he still went through on, he still went
- 44:40through halfway in like 6030 or something.
- 44:42So he's clear. It was clearly in exceptional
- 44:44shape a year ago. So like, yeah.
- 44:50So the times itself are still hard to wrap your head around.
- 44:53But then at the same time, the the where where people don't
- 44:56come from the clouds and they have a bit of a story.
- 44:59It is a bit more believable than the ones that don't, and it's
- 45:03the ones that where this this story doesn't make sense that
- 45:06you I I personally am more suspicious of.
- 45:11Especially with all of the proactive drug tests in the
- 45:14doing. I think you have to be a big
- 45:18skepticist to deliberately overlook that and still choose
- 45:22to think he must be cheating. Like, I don't think you have to
- 45:26be an optimist to choose to believe him.
- 45:28You just have to be able to look at something at face value and
- 45:31go, OK, I'm happy to be proven wrong at a later date.
- 45:36But for now, that kind of that flies with me.
- 45:41Well, that's at least how I feel.
- 45:42Or just it adds evidence to suggest that someone's clean and
- 45:47when they do, when they do certain things, like if they
- 45:49improve incrementally over time or they subject themselves to
- 45:53more regular blood tests, whatever it is, like those sorts
- 45:57of things you think give weight to the legitimacy of their
- 46:01performances. Because lots of the commentary
- 46:05going on, lots of the commentary online that I was saying when
- 46:11people would reply to the the fact that he's doing all these
- 46:16drug tests would be, yeah. But like, the shelf life of them
- 46:18now is so short and you can still get around it and stuff.
- 46:21But if you, for me, if you think that way, you're just going to
- 46:26eat yourself up inside, like you're never going to be
- 46:29satisfied with anything. So I just see what happens.
- 46:34I personally hate the way his manager, like his coach has, was
- 46:39associated with people who've got caught with drugs.
- 46:41Like that's the bit I really don't like.
- 46:42Like some of them Italians are fucking scumbags and lovely
- 46:46food. Yeah, they're not the most trust
- 46:50when it comes to like coaches. They're not the most
- 46:53trustworthy. Well, they just have a bad
- 46:54history. So when you mix like dirty
- 46:57Italian coaches and Kenyans have been local to country, who has
- 47:01had the most people caught? Like it's not really a good
- 47:03recipe, but yeah, but like saying that you can't, you have
- 47:09to give, which is. Yeah, which is why I think, can
- 47:12you not carry a reasonable degree of skepticism into that?
- 47:15I think it's that's fair. And it's why for us following
- 47:18the sport, why there's other storylines that we choose to
- 47:21follow. It's why like you, you get more
- 47:24excited around Jake and Tim's performances because you
- 47:31understand and relate to and believe their their stories.
- 47:35And so they're the things that you know, you can get excited
- 47:39about. And then these other
- 47:40performances that are a bit, they're still exciting, but but
- 47:45maybe not as exciting for some. But it's still not as big of an
- 47:51anomaly as Ruth chap and get it is two O 9 like you could.
- 47:56This was coming. Like you could see we're getting
- 47:58closer and closer and closer. There's probably like a nice
- 48:01curve pointing towards this and whereas your one route chap and
- 48:05get it dip jump was just freaking crazy.
- 48:09Speaking of Jake and Tim, nice reminder that I'm actually
- 48:13chatting with them tomorrow for the final episode.
- 48:16I think it's tomorrow, So if you have any thoughts, questions
- 48:19you'd like to sling their way, let me know.
- 48:24Is Jake Barclough on it as well? Yeah.
- 48:28Oh. See if Jake Smith and Tim should
- 48:34have had plenty of time to get over the post London hangover.
- 48:39Think Tim's actually back in Australia now, so it'll be on a
- 48:43more handy time zone for me. For us.
- 48:50The next piece of news is Brit's Team GB announced their marathon
- 48:55team for the European Marathon Championships which as always
- 49:00with Team G beat announcements came with a slight bit of
- 49:05controversy. So the female team is Abby
- 49:09Donnelly, Natasha Wilson, Clara Evans, Louise Small and Rose
- 49:13Harvey 12345 women man is Mohammed Mohammed, Johnny Mella,
- 49:20Phil Sessman, Wayne Gabriel Selassie and to well de Mengez
- 49:2512345 males. I think there was opportunity to
- 49:30send 6. There's 3 guarantees in life
- 49:35that taxes and freaking UK Athletics making up balls of
- 49:42selecting teams for national championships.
- 49:44That's so true. Like it's I don't get.
- 49:46It like they want it's so true they've they find a way to fuck
- 49:49it up every time. Don't.
- 49:51They like, why not bring one more person?
- 49:53Full team. You know, you know where it's
- 49:56being held in Birmingham, Smack bang, the center of the country.
- 50:01The travel travel costs I phenomenal that like.
- 50:08I even if. Yeah, I ever think, yeah, like
- 50:13administrators over. It's like an umpire.
- 50:17And if you know the name of the umpire, they've had a bad game
- 50:21because they should just, they're just administering.
- 50:23You shouldn't know that. It should just be let the
- 50:26players dictate the outcome, not the umpire.
- 50:29But why does the administration involve themselves so much here?
- 50:34People should just qualify. They just go.
- 50:37They just represent and it should be some policy that
- 50:39dictates in what order they get to qualify.
- 50:42They just apply the policy. It shouldn't be as Lim limited
- 50:47discretion as POS possible. People then have an idea on when
- 50:50they what they needed to do to make a team.
- 50:52They make a team and then they get to participate.
- 50:56So the the big uproar here is Ellis Cross probably not being
- 51:01selected. So the last person selected was
- 51:04that 12A men Mendez MPs ran 21048 for the marathon in London
- 51:10and his half marathon is a 6119. Ellis Cross has run 210 O 9.
- 51:17So he's have he has him in the marathon and in the half.
- 51:20Ellis Cross has run 6228. So his half is a little bit
- 51:25slower, but his marathon is faster.
- 51:29It's like I don't get. Why can't they both go?
- 51:31It doesn't make sense. It really hurts my brain,
- 51:35especially because Alice could really just drive there.
- 51:37He's literally like he is from Birmingham.
- 51:40This would mean the absolute world.
- 51:43He could stay in his own house, like it's not a big deal.
- 51:47Yeah, because literally I done the YouTube Diaries on him go
- 51:52into Istanbul to chase qualification points for this.
- 51:55Like they made a video to say This is why we're doing it, to
- 51:59try and get points for the European marathon.
- 52:02Because like the people who are faster, so like a meal and Paddy
- 52:07diva and stuff, you obviously discount them because they've,
- 52:10they could have been selected presumably and they've chosen
- 52:14not to be. But it's the ones who are like
- 52:16kind of in and around where they could have filled the vacant
- 52:21spots and the selectors have chosen not to.
- 52:26It the the sport's hard enough like it's it's a really hard
- 52:32sport to you dedicate a lot of time and effort and invest a lot
- 52:36of your own personal financial returns into the sport like.
- 52:44And it's also it's also so sad because you knew Jake Smith,
- 52:49this was like his big goal to run the 209 thirty.
- 52:52And like, he'll obviously admit that he didn't run the race that
- 52:57he wanted in London and he hasn't got himself the time, but
- 53:01it's just. Sad is there and maybe Jake will
- 53:03know, maybe this is a question for tomorrow, but was there some
- 53:06sort of ranking system that kept these guys out, You know, like
- 53:10for World Athletics as a quota system?
- 53:12And so the way it normally works is or the way it works nowadays
- 53:16is you, you have an automatic Standard Time.
- 53:18And if you don't make that, if you have, if you're inside the
- 53:21quota based on ranking points, you're in like did the UK with
- 53:24the UK just unable to field a full time for that reason?
- 53:29Yeah, you could be on to something, but I mean the
- 53:33comments, Rory Leonard is in the comments himself on the post
- 53:36announcement. That wouldn't stack up that
- 53:39without he would have, he wouldn't have said what he said
- 53:41in the comments, right? How do you maximize medal
- 53:44potential without filling all six spots on the team then,
- 53:49which is obviously a direct quote from the the policies that
- 53:53they produce, They always go with like we choose these teams
- 53:57to maximize medal potential, which is usually a way out,
- 54:01isn't it? Because they kind of refer to
- 54:04the fact of, Oh, well, if you're not going to be able to compete
- 54:07for a medal, then we're not going to send you.
- 54:10And I think if they knew if they, they would have had a, if
- 54:16they had a response, which is that people didn't make the
- 54:18quieter and therefore blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, the you,
- 54:20you would expect that would have been said, right?
- 54:24But I think the standard was 209 thirty.
- 54:29So the guy, last guy, 12 day men.
- 54:32Guess he actually didn't hit the So why does he get selected over
- 54:38Alice? Yeah, it's just UK Athletics.
- 54:46Fuck me Demica balls of these jokes.
- 54:49Yeah, it's a shame. It's a shame that like ahead of
- 54:52any team announcement, you, you can just fail that whatever is
- 54:59the outcome, it's not going to be the right outcome.
- 55:01Like someone's always going to be upset and usually
- 55:04justifiably, whereas I mean like we always seem to refer to the
- 55:09way USA do their things, but everyone's in the know, whether
- 55:14you like it or not, when you cross that finish line, you
- 55:17know, if you're on the team and you know why.
- 55:22Yeah, and it gives back power to the athletes as far as
- 55:25controlling their own destiny. Owen, did you want to do you
- 55:29want to do the this next one? Yeah, so our good friends at Fly
- 55:36Carp, the bicarb people we interviewed, they have this, I
- 55:43think this is their second year of their fast grant.
- 55:47So fast stands for Fly Carb Athletes Support Tranche,
- 55:55tranche, tranche. So yeah, this is basically for
- 56:01anyone and everyone. You don't need a certain amount
- 56:03of followers on Instagram. These are just purely looking to
- 56:07help. So I believe elite athletes in
- 56:13ways such as like whether it be travel coaching, physio,
- 56:17equipment, it like this isn't expensive for sport but it is
- 56:23like a pair of shoes switch back £200.
- 56:25So if you've got them for free you'd be happy out.
- 56:28To apply for the grant you just e-mail team@flightcab.com.
- 56:35This is basically all on their Instagram as well.
- 56:37You just a little 200 word paragraph telling you how much
- 56:42you need it and like what you'll use it for basically and then
- 56:45why you use their flight cab product.
- 56:49The deadline is the 17th of May and you'll get the decisions
- 56:54like a week later. So you have to be over 16 to
- 57:00apply for this grant and you cannot be receiving any salary
- 57:04or athletics performance funding from like another organization.
- 57:08So it's literally just to help like people that are on their
- 57:12own trying to run fast basically.
- 57:16These guys mentioned this when we chatted to them as runners
- 57:21themselves that have sort of spent a lot of time, you know,
- 57:25self funding. Yeah.
- 57:28Yeah. And so such a nice initiative.
- 57:30And I think, yeah, hopefully they they set a bit of a trend
- 57:35because I think it is that level of athlete that really these
- 57:39things make make the biggest difference.
- 57:41You're just stuck in that middle ground where you're not getting
- 57:44like the free entries or the kid deals or any of that, but you're
- 57:48like you're above the like Sobelites or whatever the
- 57:51average person. So it's not the tricky middle
- 57:54ground where you can actually just give up on the sport.
- 57:56Whereas if you get any support at all, that actually makes the
- 57:59world of a difference. So yeah, these guys are good for
- 58:02the sport. It seems to be maybe it's slowly
- 58:07trickling down from like the major footwear brands that now
- 58:11these smaller independent brands are starting to do things.
- 58:16If you think to shoe, they offer something similar as well to a
- 58:20couple of athletes. I can't remember what their
- 58:22programs called, but they've like kind of sponsored a couple
- 58:26of those on the periphery. So it is cool.
- 58:29It'd be be the dream for Easy Double to get there one day.
- 58:34Even though. They encouraged us to apply.
- 58:39By the way, so careful with your words.
- 58:42Yeah, I feel like there was a one individual they gave it to
- 58:45that didn't really that's already there if you get me.
- 58:51Who? The steeplechaser?
- 58:55Karfin, Ryan. Yeah, like she was sponsored by
- 58:58PML. Like she is up there now.
- 59:01Fair enough. I think she got dropped by her
- 59:02sponsor so she could do it like that little bit help again.
- 59:05But yeah, I thought it was, I don't know, but I love what
- 59:10they're doing again. I love the initiative.
- 59:11It's unbelievable, especially like with brands, I think Puma
- 59:15have that three hour project or something like that, or they've
- 59:19some Fast 3 project. And Hoka had this PB protocol
- 59:23where they like support people for their build.
- 59:26And then if you hit a certain tag or something, I think Puma
- 59:29had to pay out a load of athletes where if you've got
- 59:30like APB, like a certain amount of time, you get like like a
- 59:34grand and 1/2 or something while also they kick you out for the
- 59:37whole build with shoes and kit. And Hoka done it as well.
- 59:42I sort of like them sort of things.
- 59:44Let's go for the sport. Yeah, Puma done that well
- 59:48because they mark said the heck out of it too.
- 59:51So I'd imagine it paid dividends because they they had them all
- 59:55running around in the fluorescent cuts.
- 59:59But even the Hoker One Poker, they had some crazy PBS.
- 1:00:03I think I seen they put a post over for six athletes and they
- 1:00:06all like smashed their PBS and like some of them ran like 212
- 1:00:11to 14. Like really, really good times.
- 1:00:13Like one of them was first out of the masses.
- 1:00:17If you were to apply here, what would be in your 200 word pitch?
- 1:00:24Please, I'm broke. Please please please please
- 1:00:29please. Please 200 times.
- 1:00:33Yeah, I don't know. I'd say as per last week, I'm
- 1:00:39physically incapable of producing lactate boys, so your
- 1:00:42product might help me on that. I found out on Saturday my body
- 1:00:49is well able to produce some lactate.
- 1:00:51Kind of the fucking like 16. Millimeter.
- 1:00:55On on the the Pro 2 reader. Yeah.
- 1:01:01Jesus. First speed session, I'd say my
- 1:01:05body was like, what is happening?
- 1:01:09Yeah. So yeah, instead of doing the
- 1:01:131500 race, you just destroyed yourself with the session.
- 1:01:17Basically, it's probably, it's probably better during the
- 1:01:22session. I don't think the race would
- 1:01:24have been good for my head or like get more out of this.
- 1:01:28Like I would have got more of that session than I would have
- 1:01:30out of a 1500 meter race where I was probably going to be flooded
- 1:01:34after 400 meters. So yeah, bigger picture is
- 1:01:39probably better for me. That and it's sometimes tricky
- 1:01:42to manage the tapir in the day after recovery, whereas if
- 1:01:46you're just training it'll just take so long.
- 1:01:49Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:01:50And with the week I had, like I think a lot of it is a bit
- 1:01:53mental. Like if I was to run shit, I had
- 1:01:56a shit chat session on Tuesday, then I had to have like
- 1:02:00basically 48 hours off because I was so cooked.
- 1:02:03And then to try and run a race on Saturday, like it just was
- 1:02:07not a good recipe. So yeah, better off pulling the
- 1:02:11pin, maybe getting a 1500 later on the year to try and get PB in
- 1:02:15because like, yeah, no medals are won in May, early May.
- 1:02:20But you've got the 3K coming up this weekend, is it?
- 1:02:24And the fields were literally just released.
- 1:02:27No way are you in the a race. So there's I'm in the basically
- 1:02:32the B race, there's International, then there's A,
- 1:02:34then there's B. So I'm basically in the B race,
- 1:02:38but it could work out. Some of the names in that a race
- 1:02:42are pretty, pretty good. I might be hanging on.
- 1:02:47If I wasn't the in that international one, I'd probably
- 1:02:50be hanging on the the back of it.
- 1:02:53We can go through it after. OK, what you want to go through
- 1:02:56now? Now go on, go.
- 1:02:59Go through now, yeah, into the international men's.
- 1:03:03So you have got international men's 3K, you've got Jack
- 1:03:10O'Leary from Ireland, he runs 740 something in Boston earlier
- 1:03:16on the year. You've got your man Matthew
- 1:03:17Ramsden from the UK, You've got a Callum Morgan from Joe, he's a
- 1:03:23super, really good alley from Joma Henry Mclucky.
- 1:03:27You've got really good Irish lads, Michael Murphy.
- 1:03:31Shit, hasn't Henry, Henry McCook, he's run like 736 or
- 1:03:34something. Yeah, it's and there's a Swedish
- 1:03:37guy, Sebastian Lord stunned, A Belgian guy, Sam Serrano and
- 1:03:43Fin, a British guy, Finley Prophets and you've got pretty
- 1:03:50yeah, big names. I don't know if I'd like I don't
- 1:03:55really know what shape I'm in, So I don't know if it would be
- 1:03:57better to like chance my arm trying to get in that a right to
- 1:04:01get in the international race and just hang on the back or
- 1:04:05whatever better off like so in that a race I could be like
- 1:04:08maxing it out from the start. Where is the this indentional
- 1:04:12strikes? Where's the a race like might
- 1:04:14actually like feel good and be able to kick on like I don't
- 1:04:17know which would be better. I have to chat with my coach
- 1:04:21about that, but I don't even think I'd be able to get in.
- 1:04:23Well, I know I've looked up one of the boys as PBS in the in the
- 1:04:26international race and I am faster than them.
- 1:04:29So I was going to ask like what the fuck is he in that?
- 1:04:31And I'm not. I don't know how it works.
- 1:04:36But he says could you please remove this guy and put me in?
- 1:04:42And then in the International 1500 men's one, there's Callum
- 1:04:49Ellison. This is stacked as well.
- 1:04:50International Men's 1500, you got Pierce Copeland from the UK,
- 1:04:55Ben Patterson from Great Britain.
- 1:04:57You've got Isaac Camelli from Belgium.
- 1:05:00No way. Mikhail Romsey from Poland.
- 1:05:04You've got Philip Maron from Ireland.
- 1:05:05I do a train with him sometimes. You've got Ted Higgins from
- 1:05:09Tonbridge, You've got Callum Elson, Archie Davis from Brian,
- 1:05:14you've got it's stacked. And is this in Dublin?
- 1:05:19No, this is Belfast. This is what this is like one,
- 1:05:21it's like 1 them graded meets the women's international.
- 1:05:27You've got names. Is there anyone's you?
- 1:05:30Ava Lloyd. She's part of M11M11 track club.
- 1:05:35Melissa Courtney Bryant. Few international names but yeah
- 1:05:44I'll try and find there's any big in the women's 3K as well
- 1:05:46now. That's class.
- 1:05:50It's probably like the first big meet of the year over here in
- 1:05:54the women's 3K. You've got Philly Bowden,
- 1:05:56actually. Lucy Jones from England, your
- 1:06:01woman Ryan, Fanny Zalaki from Sweden.
- 1:06:08Surely you'll you'll have to tap someone up for an interview
- 1:06:11there. I don't know, I need to
- 1:06:14concentrate on my own and to be honest.
- 1:06:20So yeah, some big names. It's a big track me over here.
- 1:06:23So yeah, just happy to be. I can't wait for it, basically,
- 1:06:27but I don't know. Yeah, Watch F Men at all.
- 1:06:31You're in an interview shape. Looking very good to arrange a
- 1:06:35few interviews. I'm confident in you now.
- 1:06:40What did you run last year for 3K on the?
- 1:06:43Indoor somewhere, not indoor. I didn't do that well, I ran 832
- 1:06:48somewhere last year I ran 827. So but it looks that
- 1:06:53international race they're going to be going out like like Henry
- 1:06:59Mclucky ran like 740 something in the same me I was at last
- 1:07:03year. So they're probably going out
- 1:07:05like 745 eight minutes. And so yeah, I'm like if me
- 1:07:11personally, I'd love to be in the international race, but for
- 1:07:14me in my current situation, first race the year, the A race
- 1:07:18might be a better option. I don't.
- 1:07:21Yeah, well, I'll be honest, I'm in the A race right now, so I'll
- 1:07:23probably have to end up on the A race.
- 1:07:26And when is it day and time? It is Saturday the 9th of May so
- 1:07:31this is already coming. I think I'm running that like
- 1:07:33half one. Oh, Johanna would be streamed
- 1:07:37now. Yeah, 100% the stream alone.
- 1:07:40It's been going to watch that. Yeah, be on YouTube, which is a
- 1:07:44link. Yeah, put it in the Patreon.
- 1:07:48We'll do a watch along, right? Yeah, but we could, we could
- 1:07:52live stream it, then commentate over it.
- 1:07:55Yeah. I'm tossing up whether to where
- 1:07:57the easy double thing that. Yes, Speaking of, they can't be
- 1:08:02far off too, which is good. On the way.
- 1:08:07They have to send a send a parcel over to you on.
- 1:08:13Yeah, well, if you would like to be subject to all of Owens in in
- 1:08:16depth race reviews and I don't buy a bicarb, I don't know,
- 1:08:21lactate test last week, last week.
- 1:08:24Did you wait to see? That on front runner.
- 1:08:30Oh, actually all. Right, this is double trouble.
- 1:08:33OK, what the fork are you doing wearing a long sleeve?
- 1:08:39It's cold, have you not been listening?
- 1:08:42Fuck no what I was I was going to take my top off but I had
- 1:08:47like them 2 inch split ease on so I felt like I literally would
- 1:08:51have been naked almost. Yeah, and then Dean, opinion on
- 1:09:00wearing super shoes, doing a lactate test, I'm over.
- 1:09:04I'm back with this and I don't know if I agree with it or not.
- 1:09:09What are the options? Though?
- 1:09:10That's probably part of the problem.
- 1:09:11There's probably not that many. Sort of trainer.
- 1:09:16You reckon on the treadmill? Trying to do a different line,
- 1:09:18that's what I do. I mean, that's probably.
- 1:09:20Smarter. Yeah, that.
- 1:09:21I mean, that does that makes sense?
- 1:09:24Because the problem is, the problem is now Ryan's head
- 1:09:28doesn't fit back in the door off the back of this lactate test
- 1:09:31because he's put his bouncy super shoes on.
- 1:09:33Didn't put the treadmill up by 1% either.
- 1:09:36So isn't there's no gradient. No, it was 1% was.
- 1:09:41Was it? Yeah, yeah, I noticed that what
- 1:09:43your assumption was you see in the numbers and went, yeah, well
- 1:09:46you need to put the treadmill up, you know, mate.
- 1:09:51If that's on 1%, then that's all right.
- 1:09:53Now it's just it runs a bit slow.
- 1:09:55Clearly it doesn't take 100%, but we will get, we'll get
- 1:10:01Zander on maybe next week's weekly show and we can talk
- 1:10:05through the results and it'd be good for, at least for me.
- 1:10:10You guys might have better understanding, but how just the
- 1:10:14principle behind LC1LC2, how you apply it to training and how it
- 1:10:18actually relates to threshold work.
- 1:10:21And like just dispelling a bit of the myth and rumor around
- 1:10:25threshold and lactate given we or me are a prime example of
- 1:10:31just throwing like these buzzwords around and maybe not
- 1:10:34fully understanding what it means.
- 1:10:36So be good for Zander to help us out with that.
- 1:10:38And obviously we can poke some fun at my inflated results
- 1:10:42whilst we're at it. I'd I'd actually go and say like
- 1:10:46980% of people don't have a clue what like threshold like all
- 1:10:50them different terms mean because I feel like they all
- 1:10:53nearly jumble into a lot of them just mean the same thing.
- 1:10:57Yeah, well, I was called out for labeling something tempo on the
- 1:11:01weekend as well. Interesting.
- 1:11:03I don't know the difference between tempo threshold for
- 1:11:05like, like all the I don't know. They're all sort of the same,
- 1:11:08but different now. Depends and people.
- 1:11:11Use them. People use them differently, not
- 1:11:14that we use them in a different order.
- 1:11:17Yeah, like what? What range of words would you
- 1:11:20use to describe the types of effort that you use?
- 1:11:26So I would say. Both, yeah.
- 1:11:29For front runner, like the way it's been explained to me is
- 1:11:32it's a 5 zone model. So you have like easy, then zone
- 1:11:372 slash fat Max tempo, threshold VO2, they were the 12345.
- 1:11:45And then your training peaks normally will tell you either
- 1:11:49based on pace, thres relative to threshold, either pace or heart
- 1:11:53rate. You put that into training peaks
- 1:11:55and it will tell you which zone, which of those five zones that
- 1:12:00you to train at for a given concession.
- 1:12:03But is tempo not LT1 as well? Can can you?
- 1:12:08Often, Yeah. Well, yes, if that's yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:10like it's, it's yes, but it's sometimes it can be if you if
- 1:12:18you, but the problem is you can sometimes go that you can go all
- 1:12:21the way close to zone 4 I suppose, which is probably a bit
- 1:12:25higher than LT1. It gets a bit blurred I think.
- 1:12:28Is the Norwegian model A6 zone model, isn't it?
- 1:12:31Or something like that. Is it?
- 1:12:32There you go. I don't know.
- 1:12:34I think there's loads of different.
- 1:12:35There's a little. Confusing because then there's a
- 1:12:37three zone models very popular as well.
- 1:12:41But yeah, tempo I would say yeah is around that LT1 ish zone.
- 1:12:46But. But what I've learned from this
- 1:12:49already is that like I thought LT1, what did people say?
- 1:12:54It's around 2 millimol and LT23 millimol.
- 1:12:58But everyone's obviously individual and has their own
- 1:13:02lactate profiles, so there's no fixed number attached to
- 1:13:06everyone. It's purely how the numbers
- 1:13:10change, whether that's from like 1.11.11.2, all of a sudden 1.6
- 1:13:17that could be an LC-1 compared to someone might start reading
- 1:13:20at like 2.32.42.2. And then if it goes to 2.6, that
- 1:13:25could be another person's LC 1. So yeah, some assumptions I've
- 1:13:31probably made in the past. It just makes you realize like
- 1:13:34testing 1 off during a session it might.
- 1:13:40Yeah, not be helpful. Think that you're informing
- 1:13:43something, but unless you have the actual profile behind it to
- 1:13:46know where it sits, then probably not so much.
- 1:13:50It's very good observation. Very self away.
- 1:13:54See Dean. That's good, I like it.
- 1:13:59But no. But that's the truth.
- 1:14:00Though I think the point is because you're looking for on
- 1:14:03that ramp test the inflection points, right?
- 1:14:06And so now you go. No, it's good.
- 1:14:11So on mine, with how it played out, because there wasn't really
- 1:14:15much of an inflection, the LT1 becomes blurred.
- 1:14:20So Zander, he'll explain it better himself, but he uses this
- 1:14:24like model where he feeds the results to it and there's all
- 1:14:28different ways which you can interpret LT1 and LT2.
- 1:14:33It's not just looking at the graph and going where is the
- 1:14:36inflection points based on someone's curve, whether it's
- 1:14:40steep or flat. There's like 678 different ways
- 1:14:44in which you can interpret it and like make the most accurate
- 1:14:50because they're all guesses at the end of the day as to where
- 1:14:52these LT1 and LT2 actually sit. So look forward to unpacking
- 1:14:59that. But that leads me nicely into
- 1:15:04tomorrow. I'll reveal all on the No agenda
- 1:15:08show both we have the honour of a national record holder and
- 1:15:14someone who competed at the recent World Indoor
- 1:15:17Championships Join us for training tomorrow.
- 1:15:21So LC-2 shall for sure be tested.
- 1:15:25Your sheep Diaries, you boys have been.
- 1:15:27We had the conversation about this Marco Langdon.
- 1:15:31I said I'd try and watch it before today and I haven't.
- 1:15:34Can someone inform me on what he's up to?
- 1:15:38Basically he's Hampton Samuels big rival, but he is he somewhat
- 1:15:47call him a head case, but I I sort of love him as well.
- 1:15:52This stuff he comes out with. So basically all track, all
- 1:15:56access or all access track on YouTube.
- 1:15:59They don't they do workout videos basically on this.
- 1:16:02They do college teams, athletes, pro teams, pro athletes,
- 1:16:05whatever. And Marco Langan was last week's
- 1:16:09and the session was like 11 by 600.
- 1:16:11But some of the stuff this chap comes out, he's like a goldmine
- 1:16:15of, like, just quotes. He says at the start he's like
- 1:16:21balanced life is for people who are too soft.
- 1:16:24If you want to be the best, you have to go 90 percent, 95%, all
- 1:16:28in. He's just so good.
- 1:16:34Yeah. He's more of him in running to
- 1:16:37make running enjoyable, don't you reckon?
- 1:16:41Yeah, and he spawned. It's weird.
- 1:16:44So his college is Nike, basically Nike sport like kid
- 1:16:49out their college team. But he's a Deodora MILDL.
- 1:16:53So he's wearing like the Deodora super shoes, the Garrett Carbon
- 1:16:57to a shoe I'd love to try. And then he switches on their
- 1:17:00spikes. And Deodora also have this
- 1:17:02initiative going, whereas they're trying to get like the
- 1:17:05first high schooler to break 4 minutes in the mile in their
- 1:17:10spike will get like an NIL deal for the year.
- 1:17:15So yeah, again, he's just such and he absolutely smashes this
- 1:17:20workout. It's like, so 11 by 600.
- 1:17:22He's hitting them in one. Would it be 43 or 34?
- 1:17:34I think it's 144, yeah. Well, because 62nd 400.
- 1:17:41He's going through 63. Then that's yeah, 31.
- 1:17:47So that's 34. OK, yes, he's going through 134
- 1:17:51is consistently and then for the 5th Rep and the 11th Rep he he
- 1:17:57does a different. So after 150 meters, he like
- 1:18:01slows it right down to like just like a steady for like 150
- 1:18:06meters. Then he picks it back up again.
- 1:18:08So sort of like doing that like change of pace.
- 1:18:11But like after I think after like 6 reps is like it was like
- 1:18:146 minimal. And but he's like he says, hey,
- 1:18:20the numbers don't matter. It's all about the feel.
- 1:18:23So yeah, I know I'd highly recommend people going to watch
- 1:18:27it. It's like it is such a hard
- 1:18:29workout, like he's going through in 60 threes.
- 1:18:31I think he's won 45 rest. But again, today just looks.
- 1:18:35He just looks so smooth. This is all solo as well.
- 1:18:38The title of the workout. Easiest workout ever. 60
- 1:18:43millimol, but yeah. Right, right to be in the bin at
- 1:18:52six millimol. Yeah, give it a watch.
- 1:18:59Is he the one who was getting interviewed those few weeks
- 1:19:02back? And was it actually Jonathan
- 1:19:04Gaul who was interviewing him? And he was like kicking off,
- 1:19:06kind of. Yeah, yeah, He's the one who
- 1:19:09died. Every race he dies on the line.
- 1:19:12Yeah, and isn't he who just isn't he who last week, weekend
- 1:19:19one was, he won the pen 4x4, the DMR. So I think they came second
- 1:19:26in the DM or the distance mixed relay.
- 1:19:30So that's where it's like 408 hundred miles, 1200 or something
- 1:19:35like that. That's where your man burn bomb
- 1:19:38baton. But then they won the four by a
- 1:19:40mile. Yeah.
- 1:19:43And yet that his school, like Villanova, has such a rich
- 1:19:46history in them. Pen relays.
- 1:19:47So pen relays for people who don't know, it's just a load of
- 1:19:51different types of relays for colleges and like we Dean then
- 1:19:56put me on to like old school ones where it's like.
- 1:20:00What did you think of that Villanova, the Villanova versus
- 1:20:04Oregon, like, because that's what it took me straight here to
- 1:20:06like in my mind that rate, that race.
- 1:20:09If they're such a unique type of race because people just slow it
- 1:20:14right down every time they hand the button over it, they slow
- 1:20:17right them because they don't want to like go out too hard.
- 1:20:20So it's always like a burn up over the last like lap or two.
- 1:20:24And yeah, it's just. Do you hear the titers in the in
- 1:20:29the Aussie the So Marco Langan runs for Villanova and three
- 1:20:35Aussies used to run for Villanova Patti, including Patti
- 1:20:38and Geordie Williams and name escapes me bees originally from
- 1:20:45WA Sam it'll come to me but and they were in there 4 by mile and
- 1:20:50you hear the commentators when it grinded to a halt saying it
- 1:20:53was a jog. Fest they literally stopped No
- 1:20:55OK, so people they literally going at like low 4 minute mile
- 1:20:59pace and then they just pull it right back to a jog.
- 1:21:02It's like, sorry, it's crazy. Like was it 800 meters left?
- 1:21:07Yeah, so because Ed Chesery out kicked Geordie Williams in the
- 1:21:12DMR the day. Before, yeah.
- 1:21:14For Oregon and that Ed Chesery referred to as King Ches because
- 1:21:18he just couldn't be beaten. He won everything.
- 1:21:21And then Geordie Williams just backed his kick in and was like
- 1:21:25hit and say they both both neither of them wanted to take
- 1:21:28it out hard and the whole rest of the field ends up catching
- 1:21:31them and the whole and they and they're starting to get booed by
- 1:21:34the crowd. And then what about the how the
- 1:21:38anticipation builds as the jargon and you're like literally
- 1:21:42when are they going to move? Like this is wild.
- 1:21:45Yeah. And because.
- 1:21:46Bucks, you're bringing other. People, yeah.
- 1:21:48And you're bringing other people into the race, but they're that
- 1:21:50confident that they'll just burn them anyway.
- 1:21:53And it was just, yeah, Imano, Imano.
- 1:21:55And I think what made it so super exciting is that burn
- 1:21:59bomb. You know, Oregon's like they
- 1:22:02pluck the best, no pun intended, but they pluck all the best
- 1:22:06athletes out of the out of the world, you know, the best.
- 1:22:10And this, this guy's what, just broken the NCAA record run 331.
- 1:22:15Looks like he can't be beaten. And then you've got this like
- 1:22:18really rough around the edges bloke that's just like, Nah, I
- 1:22:21reckon I can, I can do, yeah. And he does.
- 1:22:25The fact that they race each other like the day before and
- 1:22:28like sort of separate event and they have to go again the next
- 1:22:30day, it's yeah, it's a really, really good watch.
- 1:22:33And the confidence you have to have to try and think you can
- 1:22:35turn the tables. Yeah, I know.
- 1:22:37Yeah, let's go be a micro Langan.
- 1:22:43Give him a watch, give him a follow on Instagram as well.
- 1:22:47It's good quality content. Are we at double trouble?
- 1:22:51Did anyone have anything else before we go to the final leg?
- 1:22:56Yeah, double trouble. You wearing a long sleeve top
- 1:22:58doing a threshold test in Australia?
- 1:23:01Me. Me wearing a long sleeve top, Me
- 1:23:04wearing super shoes. Your results.
- 1:23:08My results being fake. I've actually I think I might
- 1:23:21have a couple of things in my notes.
- 1:23:22Let me just check. I know I've got 1 written down
- 1:23:25here. I will do that one.
- 1:23:27Oh, were you saying something about Adelaide running Festival?
- 1:23:32No, we covered that. Did you see saw we got gifted
- 1:23:37the registration plate in Kenya 15930?
- 1:23:44It looks class to be fair. That is pretty cool.
- 1:23:49I felt really weird like reading out the results earlier and it's
- 1:23:51like, I know two hours like whatever.
- 1:23:55Like the fact that he's run one hour should.
- 1:23:57Run a marathon? No, at the current point in
- 1:23:59time, because I saw that, you know, the one that finished in
- 1:24:02216. Yeah.
- 1:24:04And the comment, the first comment was, wow, 16 minutes
- 1:24:08slow, over 16 minutes slower than the world record.
- 1:24:10But that's all anyone's going to do right now.
- 1:24:12Yeah. It's crazy.
- 1:24:16It has. It has got people like talking
- 1:24:19about running, know who otherwise wouldn't be, isn't it?
- 1:24:22Like, I genuinely, I got stopped in the office by someone who'd
- 1:24:25like, knows that I run, but I obviously don't reveal the true
- 1:24:29extent of how much of A nerd I am.
- 1:24:31And they were like, oh, did you see that marathon?
- 1:24:33Like less than two hours? What the hell?
- 1:24:36So it's just funny, like it has caught the attention of
- 1:24:40everyone. The mainstream news.
- 1:24:44Yeah, I had one more thing before we get to double trouble.
- 1:24:48Two of my friends, one of them ran his third marathon.
- 1:24:51The other one, Ben, actually Dean, you met him whilst he was
- 1:24:54over, came over to Australia on a visit earlier this year, ran
- 1:24:58his debut marathon on the weekend in the Newcastle
- 1:25:02Gateshead Marathon. Rory who was run This third one
- 1:25:07ran painful 3 hours 47 because he ran his first 10K at 3 hours
- 1:25:1722 pace. And then he he was blaming the
- 1:25:21course saying the elevation was disgusting.
- 1:25:24And I cross reference back to London and it was only like a
- 1:25:27few meters more than London. And Ben ran a very impressive 3
- 1:25:36O 4 on his debut considering he'd done limited training in
- 1:25:40the build up. So yeah, the the masses are
- 1:25:45entering the marathon scene. This is too loud to would have
- 1:25:47otherwise been out drinking ale. Now they're doing marathons.
- 1:25:53It's cool now. Yeah, Double trouble I've got
- 1:25:59this one's been on there for a couple of weeks and some reason
- 1:26:01I haven't got to it. So for must have been about 3
- 1:26:05weeks ago the some of the Olympic tickets came on sale or
- 1:26:10for ballast, whatever it was, the process opened up and it
- 1:26:13must have been the first point at which people could actually
- 1:26:17see how much the tickets were going to be.
- 1:26:20And there was, I think there's like 12 different categories
- 1:26:23starting at this is in U.S. dollars like $100 for the
- 1:26:28cheapest 1 and goes up to may have been it was over $1000,
- 1:26:34maybe $1200. But as with most sporting events
- 1:26:40like this, the Cheaptickets have very small allocations and they
- 1:26:46just kind of allocate a small bucket towards them so that they
- 1:26:51can claim the there's $100 tickets available when the
- 1:26:55reality is they're the first ones that are gone.
- 1:26:57And then there's thousands of these like middle to upper class
- 1:27:01tickets and getting up to $1000 is insanely expensive.
- 1:27:09It's not really surprising because I'm kind of used to it
- 1:27:12from like with football in the UK, the regular season games are
- 1:27:17quite accessible, like £4050 and then all of a sudden UEFA gets
- 1:27:22involved with the Champions League and the tickets for the
- 1:27:25final where they control the prices.
- 1:27:27I like £500 and everyone gets priced out.
- 1:27:31And so it's a bit of a disgrace. Like fans hate it because all
- 1:27:36the tickets go to the corporate sponsors and the fans who follow
- 1:27:39it all year, devoting their loyalty, their cash to travel
- 1:27:45towards it and stuff. They end up not being able to
- 1:27:48get to the biggest events. And yeah, with the Olympics
- 1:27:51here, this narrative of expensive ticket prices, I just,
- 1:27:56I don't understand that. Like, running is one of those
- 1:27:58things where it's accessible for everyone.
- 1:28:00Like literally you put a pair of shoes on.
- 1:28:02Sometimes the Africans, they don't even wear shoes.
- 1:28:06You just go out the door and you start running.
- 1:28:08At least that's how it used to be.
- 1:28:09Now there's lots of expensive tech and nice clothing and
- 1:28:14stuff. And you can divulge in that if
- 1:28:16you please. But otherwise, you can still
- 1:28:19literally just put a pair of shoes on and go for a run.
- 1:28:21And that's why it's so cool. And then for the Olympics to
- 1:28:26start assigning all these crazy prices to it.
- 1:28:31I just don't agree with it. I can't imagine that's how it
- 1:28:34was back in the day when the Games first started.
- 1:28:36I don't think it's in the kind of like the nature of the sport
- 1:28:41or of athletic performance, but a scene in the Eric and Aisha
- 1:28:47podcast, which is like a part, I think it's part of city is like
- 1:28:53falls under their catalog. Aisha, the woman, the female
- 1:28:57host was kind of like promoting it, saying like, you know, this
- 1:29:00is the pinnacle of our sport. If we want to compare ourselves
- 1:29:03to like the NFL and stuff and how like these are the best
- 1:29:08athletes in the world. The prices deserve to be
- 1:29:11expensive. And I just like, I get the point
- 1:29:15she's trying to make in that these are the best athletes in
- 1:29:18the world, but that doesn't mean that the like general punters
- 1:29:23need to be priced out of the opportunity of going to spectate
- 1:29:27in person. You don't want to be creating
- 1:29:32unnecessary barriers to a sport which is probably in a growth
- 1:29:36period rather than having that crazy demand where people are
- 1:29:40willing to spend thousands on it.
- 1:29:45I thought it was a really bad take for someone with a big
- 1:29:47platform and lots of influence. Is America to blame for this as
- 1:29:52well? Like because it is in America?
- 1:29:54Like would it if it was in freaking like well, even though
- 1:29:58I think apparently in France it was pretty expensive as well in
- 1:30:01Paris. I just know like for the World
- 1:30:04Cup as well. Like the football World Cup is
- 1:30:07on in America this year. And apparently there's a few
- 1:30:09games on in the MetLife Stadium, which is in New Jersey.
- 1:30:13So it's like an hour train from, let's say the center of New York
- 1:30:17to that football stadium. And apparently like today if I
- 1:30:22was to go there, the train take will cost like 5 to $10.00, but
- 1:30:26for the World Cup it's going to cost $150.00 to get out to the
- 1:30:31stadium. So it's like, is it America in
- 1:30:35general that are causing these big price hikes or is it the
- 1:30:40Olympic Council and are they to blame?
- 1:30:44Don't know the answer, Yeah. I thought you would be less,
- 1:30:51you'd feel less about it even, that you just get media passes
- 1:30:54to all these major championships now, right?
- 1:30:58Well, no, no, I'm for the people.
- 1:31:04Can we apply? For the Olympics.
- 1:31:07That'll sort us out. Like definitely.
- 1:31:08But I'm for the people. Yeah, I don't like to see people
- 1:31:15getting priced out for for like, yeah, like even trying to get
- 1:31:21like you probably could get relatively cheap tickets to see
- 1:31:25freaking like badminton. Yeah, like and first round
- 1:31:28sessions and all that stuff. But to get like 100 meter spread
- 1:31:32final like no chance. Look, if they price it in a way,
- 1:31:36but it's still capacity stadiums and those sorts of things, then
- 1:31:39bike. Like happens every four years.
- 1:31:42It's not like this is like a big, I can see, sort of see why
- 1:31:46it's so expensive. You would just like for whoever
- 1:31:51is lucky enough to host the Olympic Games that obviously
- 1:31:54they they sell the stadium out and the people from that area
- 1:31:59are lucky enough to be given opportunity to be able to get to
- 1:32:02it. And then somehow they find a way
- 1:32:05to reward or incentivize loyalty.
- 1:32:08I know it doesn't really work because it's not like a build up
- 1:32:11series or anything, but I know the there's there must be some
- 1:32:16way to tap into like Diamond League databases of fans who've
- 1:32:21went to meet prior and offer them tickets 1st and then
- 1:32:25release tickets through like the individual federations or
- 1:32:28something and just make sure they get in the right hands
- 1:32:31rather than influencers getting access to them and somehow
- 1:32:35managing to spin it as cool. And then people with lots of
- 1:32:39cash would end up paying $1000 for a ticket.
- 1:32:43But the influencers with a big reach, do you not think that is
- 1:32:47better for the sport because then gets out there more like I
- 1:32:51was talking to Andrew about this.
- 1:32:53And like back in the day, the only time you'd see like an
- 1:32:58athlete wearing kit is on the big competitions, which is why
- 1:33:01athletes were paid really well to wear, let's say Adidas kit or
- 1:33:05whatever. Nowadays, it's the social media
- 1:33:08person with 300K followers on Instagram that is getting all
- 1:33:12the eyes. So that is why, like they might
- 1:33:15be the fastest, but they're going to get the kiss the eyes.
- 1:33:20So like, I feel like for the Olympics is like a brand or
- 1:33:26whatever, getting these big people with big followings is
- 1:33:30probably like getting Snoop Dogg.
- 1:33:32Like all eyes are going to be a Snoop Dogg.
- 1:33:35Everyone's going to know Snoop Dogg is at the Olympics, so you
- 1:33:38can sort of see why they sort of give it to these people as well,
- 1:33:41rather than us three who love the sport but don't have as big
- 1:33:46of a following as they are their mothers, yes.
- 1:33:50Yeah, it's probably somewhat of a balance, isn't it?
- 1:33:52Like, imagine the stadium was full of influences, probably
- 1:33:57like Miami F1, this weekend's probably would have been full of
- 1:34:00influences. And then like the core F1 fans
- 1:34:03who are going probably rattled to death walking around seeing
- 1:34:07all these like influences. They're just there for the
- 1:34:10photos and the clout and stuff. Like yes, you need them in the
- 1:34:15stadium. Sorry, right.
- 1:34:18Did you say is it Rafael Nadal doing the chequered flag?
- 1:34:21Yeah. Was he?
- 1:34:22What is What is Rafa doing this checkered flag from the Miami
- 1:34:28Grand Prix? They get some random people on
- 1:34:31that flag, to be fair. But yeah, then you also need
- 1:34:37people in the stadium who are actually, like, on the edge of
- 1:34:40the seat, who know what performance means, who know the
- 1:34:43difference between if it's 326 or 336, who are able to follow
- 1:34:50it as it's going and like, yeah, you know what it is.
- 1:34:55Go on. In the F1 world, who do you guys
- 1:34:59go to for some insights as to like the race takes?
- 1:35:04Do you guys subscribe to any content?
- 1:35:09You're going to say about P1. Yeah.
- 1:35:13And then they're in Oz at the minute, Matt, and they're.
- 1:35:16Doing a tour, aren't they? I think are they coming to
- 1:35:18Perth? I don't know.
- 1:35:20I think so. I think.
- 1:35:21I think they are, yeah. Mate, that's how that's a
- 1:35:25success story of a podcast, isn't it?
- 1:35:27Now that the travel in the world talking about F1 nuts.
- 1:35:31Yeah, it's cool. And to be fair, I do enjoy their
- 1:35:34their takes on it. Going back to running so you
- 1:35:38know you're one who got the stress fracture.
- 1:35:41Remember, that's the. Influencer girl that Mary
- 1:35:45McCarthy is it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:48Her if you've her who has got like 300 to 500,000 subscript
- 1:35:54followers or Jonathan Galt who knows his shit about running but
- 1:35:59doesn't have a bigger following. Like who are they picking in
- 1:36:01that situation to give the character?
- 1:36:05Yeah, 100% which and it shouldn't.
- 1:36:08Like I can see why they pick Mary, but it shouldn't be Mary
- 1:36:10if you get me. It should be both really.
- 1:36:14Yeah, yeah, in an ideal world. What do you think about the way
- 1:36:17in go on? I've gone, we're going, I'm
- 1:36:21going off pace again though. OK, let me say this comment
- 1:36:26then. You say they need to find a way
- 1:36:28where they can give the ticket to the likes of Mary's but not
- 1:36:32create resentments in like the actual passionate fans.
- 1:36:36But about that fact. Yeah, bring both.
- 1:36:41Invite both. Because I think the voice of
- 1:36:43Jonathan Galt for a lot of people is far more insightful
- 1:36:47than any influencers comments. Just a tiny bit.
- 1:36:51Yeah. Man knows everything.
- 1:36:54It's speaking, yeah. And Speaking of his insights,
- 1:36:57what did you think? Like him taking you behind the
- 1:37:00scenes of what he's doing on at one of those world majors and
- 1:37:04what he's trying to do and think about and all those storylines
- 1:37:07and then the fact that the commercial stream we still get
- 1:37:10fed is something that he agrees is not enjoyable.
- 1:37:15It's a shame in this day and age that we like, there's nothing,
- 1:37:19There's no good alternative to consuming the rice.
- 1:37:23Yeah, they're still trying to work that out.
- 1:37:28But just put a put a dash, just put him and the brothers and the
- 1:37:32twins together in front of the screens, give them access to 30
- 1:37:37different cameras and get them to call the rice that.
- 1:37:40'D be so good. Wouldn't it?
- 1:37:42Yeah. Because that's what you you feel
- 1:37:46like you get with them. Going back to F1 comparison,
- 1:37:49Brundle on commentary. Like the sort of insight that
- 1:37:52those type of people can provide.
- 1:37:54Exceptional, yeah. Right, we've we've covered a few
- 1:37:59sports off tonight and we've got there.
- 1:38:01I think that's it is a missus fellas.
- 1:38:07Speak to you later in the week for the second recording.
- 1:38:12Good luck. Yeah, LT1LT2, tomorrow run.
- 1:38:19See ya, good luck this.
